- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, the truth about sorority life, with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts, me, Gia Giudice, Daisy Kent.
- 0:07Speaker 2: And Jennifer Fessler. Hi, you guys. Welcome back to Dirty Rush.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I am Jen Fessler, and today we have the second episode,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the second time that we get to talk to Shannon
- 0:24Speaker 1: Storms Bedore.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Okay, so I know one of your daughters is in
- 0:29Speaker 2: a sorority.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Sophie was a Kappa at Baylor, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Okay.
- 0:33Speaker 2: At Baylor. So there you go.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So that's like an intense, Baylor is, you know, that's
- 0:37Speaker 1: a Texas school.
- 0:38Speaker 2: That's like a serious, serious rush.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And I don't know, you know, just now I, I
- 0:44Speaker 1: feel like I know a lot about, especially in the South,
- 0:47Speaker 1: what goes on during rush and the intensity of it.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I don't know if you, with.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Sophie there, we've had podcasts where like mothers went and
- 0:56Speaker 1: tried to you know, bribe the girls, bringing big platters
- 1:02Speaker 1: of cookies over to the house before their daughters rushed.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And all the mothers are there and they're all involved
- 1:11Speaker 1: in the buying of the outfits.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And was that you with Sophie?
- 1:15Speaker 3: Well, I did make sure she had recommendations with good photographs.
- 1:18Speaker 2: That's good.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Because I didn't do that, but it was helpful for
- 1:22Speaker 3: me when I was vice chairman and president to be
- 1:24Speaker 3: able to show our girls photographs of the girls people
- 1:28Speaker 3: that were coming in so you kind of knew who
- 1:30Speaker 3: you wanted to look out for because you basically got
- 1:32Speaker 3: a resume today when i write recommendations for people oh
- 1:36Speaker 3: my god it's like a flipping resume they send me
- 1:39Speaker 3: i mean it wasn't like that for me no i
- 1:41Speaker 3: wanted her to do well and at baylor they rush
- 1:44Speaker 3: in the spring so there were all these rules like
- 1:46Speaker 3: you couldn't go to a fraternity party or you couldn't
- 1:51Speaker 3: spend time with sorority girls that was called dirty rushing
- 1:55Speaker 3: so it And they, I guess they implemented it. So. Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 2: My daughter too.
- 2:02Speaker 3: But she got into her, she got into her number one,
- 2:04Speaker 3: you know, and as a mother knowing what the hell
- 2:06Speaker 3: I went through, getting in anywhere I wanted to get in,
- 2:10Speaker 3: you know, my heart would be pounding at night.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Shannon, that is what we talked to.
- 2:16Speaker 1: We talked to a lot of mothers about that, that
- 2:18Speaker 1: it becomes so intense and so heartbreaking, right. For these girls,
- 2:24Speaker 1: especially when they, don't get in anywhere. It's just awful.
- 2:29Speaker 3: It's life altering because the rejection and then the rejection
- 2:34Speaker 3: in front of so many others. I mean, I remember
- 2:36Speaker 3: we'd get our sheet and everyone in my little rush
- 2:38Speaker 3: group was there and it's like, yeah, I didn't get any.
- 2:41Speaker 3: I mean, it's devastating.
- 2:42Speaker 2: It's awful, but yes.
- 2:44Speaker 1: But listen, listeners, I want you to hear this. Shannon
- 2:48Speaker 1: Storms Bedore- Didn't get in. And she went back for more.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And she still didn't get into her top sorority. And
- 2:56Speaker 1: she became the president. And she became the queen of Bravo. So, ladies,
- 3:00Speaker 1: just hang in.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It's a bit of an exaggeration, Jen.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Well, I'm going with it.
- 3:05Speaker 3: No, I agree. And I'm hoping that in today's world
- 3:09Speaker 3: that things are a little bit different and more inclusive. And,
- 3:13Speaker 3: you know, it's not just about looks or money. You
- 3:17Speaker 3: look at the whole person, you know? And intelligence should
- 3:20Speaker 3: have everything to do with it.
- 3:21Speaker 2: They do.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I mean, yes, we definitely now, we talk to a
- 3:26Speaker 1: lot of girls and they want to be in the
- 3:29Speaker 1: brainiac sorority and the one with the best grades. And
- 3:31Speaker 1: there's a lot of that that goes on now. And
- 3:33Speaker 1: I think there's a lot more diversity. And I think that, yes,
- 3:38Speaker 1: sororities are looking at different things, not just at looks
- 3:42Speaker 1: and money.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I'm happy to report.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I've been back to USC and it's a completely different school.
- 3:47Speaker 3: On a Thursday night when the line for the 9-0
- 3:49Speaker 3: would be around the block, it's dead now because everyone's
- 3:53Speaker 3: in their dorm rooms studying. So it is different.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I remember my kids were applying. USC is
- 3:59Speaker 2: not an easy school to get into.
- 4:01Speaker 1: No.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yeah. So Sophie is in, but your other two didn't
- 4:06Speaker 2: want to... Rush. So where, tell me a little bit
- 4:09Speaker 2: about that.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Well, Adeline is at Parsons in New York city.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So there's no design. So there's no sports.
- 4:15Speaker 3: There's no, uh, nothing like that. Yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Is she enjoying it?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Oh, she loves it. I mean, I went to a
- 4:23Speaker 3: three in New York city and they're never, I think
- 4:25Speaker 3: there's going to be back East forever, but Stella did
- 4:28Speaker 3: get into USC and the Trojan transfer program. So she
- 4:32Speaker 3: had to go abroad for her first year and she chose, uh, Paris.
- 4:36Speaker 3: So there were eight boys and six girls from USC.
- 4:40Speaker 3: They went to American University of Paris, traveled every weekend,
- 4:43Speaker 3: which I loved because there were eight boys, so they
- 4:45Speaker 3: were always together taking care of the girls. And then
- 4:48Speaker 3: she fell in love with it, and she transferred to
- 4:51Speaker 3: American University of Paris and just started her senior year there.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Wow.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And she does not want to come home. So I
- 4:56Speaker 3: love that.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I love that. You got some cool cats. I love that.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah. So there's no, again, there's no sororities. There are
- 5:02Speaker 3: football teams or anything. But my kids were raised as
- 5:05Speaker 3: USC Trojans when they were born. So they had their
- 5:08Speaker 3: fair share fill of football and all the sports.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Well, what was it like going to parents weekend? Like
- 5:15Speaker 1: with Sophie, was it, did you feel bombarded?
- 5:18Speaker 3: I made Waco a very frequent spot for me to visit.
- 5:23Speaker 3: But I would go there quite often. And you know, USC,
- 5:26Speaker 3: they say University of Spoiled Children. I say Successful Children.
- 5:30Speaker 2: There you go.
- 5:31Speaker 3: You know, there's always like money. UCLA will put a
- 5:34Speaker 3: dollar bill in their hands because USC goes like this.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And it's like, yeah, okay, whatever. But when you go
- 5:39Speaker 3: to a lot of these schools in the South, like Baylor,
- 5:42Speaker 3: I'm telling you, there was a lot of wealth when
- 5:44Speaker 3: I would go to the football games. I would go
- 5:45Speaker 3: to at least one football game a year. And the
- 5:48Speaker 3: people were so kind and welcoming. And I've... I've created
- 5:51Speaker 3: a lot of friendships by visiting Waco for four years. Yeah.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Did you get bombarded?
- 5:57Speaker 3: A little bit. I mean, a little, a little. Yeah.
- 6:00Speaker 2: We always do. I guess it's like.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:03Speaker 2: But I do.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I think I do more when I go to the
- 6:05Speaker 3: USC games actually.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Cause I still have season tickets, but it, it, it
- 6:11Speaker 3: was nice. It's, it was, it was nice to experience
- 6:14Speaker 3: something so different than USC, but Baylor doesn't have actual
- 6:19Speaker 3: sorority houses. There's not like we had a house where
- 6:23Speaker 3: I think 50 girls could live.
- 6:25Speaker 2: So did we.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Yeah. So that was a bummer, I felt, for Sophie.
- 6:29Speaker 3: But at Baylor, they do something neat. And I don't
- 6:32Speaker 3: know if they do it in other schools. They have
- 6:34Speaker 3: these houses. Like she was a Kappa with a K.
- 6:37Speaker 3: And the sophomores would live in Cowboy, K-O-W-B-O-Y. And so
- 6:42Speaker 3: they were five-bedroom homes. And then you'd move to like,
- 6:45Speaker 3: I don't know, they had names for all the houses.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So the girls would live together in like a five-bedroom house.
- 6:51Speaker 3: So they got a little bit of a sorority-ish.
- 6:53Speaker 2: They got the feel.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Did you go with her to the frat parties? Like,
- 6:58Speaker 1: was it, because my experience going, my daughter went to Delaware.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And so we went to the frat parties and all
- 7:05Speaker 1: the mothers were wasted and And I might've been a
- 7:08Speaker 1: little wasted myself and I never made, thankfully I never
- 7:11Speaker 1: made a big fool of myself, but there was a
- 7:13Speaker 1: lot of that going on. Like women trying to relive
- 7:16Speaker 1: those days.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Really?
- 7:17Speaker 2: You see that? Yeah.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I didn't really see that, but there were, you know,
- 7:21Speaker 3: it was such a small town. There was one place
- 7:23Speaker 3: known for pickle shots. I'll never do that again. And
- 7:27Speaker 3: then I would go, Sophie's boyfriend was in a fraternity
- 7:31Speaker 3: and you'd go to the party outside and there would
- 7:33Speaker 3: just be broken beer bottles all over the ground.
- 7:35Speaker 2: It was gross.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Why aren't you sweeping this up?
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yep.
- 7:39Speaker 3: But I didn't see that. That would have been a kick.
- 7:43Speaker 3: I will tell you, I only go to one football
- 7:45Speaker 3: game a year because when I go, I start acting
- 7:48Speaker 3: like I was when I was 18 years old. So
- 7:50Speaker 3: it's exhausting.
- 7:50Speaker 2: That's the whole thing.
- 7:51Speaker 1: You know how many girls we've spoken to about on
- 7:54Speaker 1: the pod about like their parents and what their parents
- 7:56Speaker 1: did or what their best friend's parent did. There's, I'll
- 8:01Speaker 1: never forget the story of someone came on and said
- 8:03Speaker 1: that her sorority sister's mom came, got wasted and started
- 8:08Speaker 1: making out with one of the frat boys.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Can you imagine?
- 8:12Speaker 3: No.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And you, I know, I know.
- 8:15Speaker 3: But I'm sure it happens. I'm sure it does.
- 8:18Speaker 1: It's like a great, you go back and I think
- 8:20Speaker 1: the parents, especially like our first year, Jeff Fessler is
- 8:24Speaker 1: not a drinker and he's doing like bongs and like,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I mean, he is like, he was, I mean, my
- 8:32Speaker 1: daughter insisted, so he did what he had to do,
- 8:34Speaker 1: but you know, it's like so much fun to sort
- 8:37Speaker 1: of be back in, you know, in that, that whole
- 8:40Speaker 1: vibe of just Greek life. Yes.
- 8:43Speaker 3: But when you're 62, it catches up on you. Yes.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Oh yes. Honey, 58, 62, it's all the same thing.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Tell me if you have just some advice for like
- 9:10Speaker 1: the moms of girls that are going through.
- 9:13Speaker 3: You know, I don't want to say just let your daughter,
- 9:17Speaker 3: you know, like do the, help your daughter do the research.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I wish that my mother had done that. Cause I
- 9:23Speaker 3: didn't know how, what, how people dress. I didn't really
- 9:27Speaker 3: know what the process was. So try it and just
- 9:30Speaker 3: help educate your daughter on what, they have coming ahead
- 9:33Speaker 3: of them and get those letters of recommendation out because
- 9:36Speaker 3: in order at least in our sorority in order to
- 9:40Speaker 3: get for us to extend a bid to someone they
- 9:42Speaker 3: already had to have they had to have a letter
- 9:44Speaker 3: of recommendation so you're going to need to get that
- 9:47Speaker 3: at some point but you know what you just love
- 9:51Speaker 3: yourself and be who you are you know i wasn't
- 9:54Speaker 3: going to go hi hi it's like a joke we
- 9:57Speaker 3: still have a joke in my family where we go, hi,
- 9:59Speaker 3: that means you have something in your teeth. It just,
- 10:02Speaker 3: it was never me. So just be yourself and you
- 10:04Speaker 3: will find the right place. I think Alpha Chi Omega
- 10:07Speaker 3: was my place.
- 10:09Speaker 2: It was the right place for you.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I wasn't happy about it at the beginning, but you
- 10:13Speaker 3: know what? I learned a lot. I had a great
- 10:16Speaker 3: college experience there. Something that I'll never forget.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Charles, I hope really you are listening to this, like,
- 10:23Speaker 1: especially because you got into one that you didn't think
- 10:25Speaker 1: was your place. And now you're saying that it was
- 10:27Speaker 1: your place. You were the president of the damn thing. No. Yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 3: You know, you never know what's going to happen. You know,
- 10:33Speaker 3: maybe maybe you're put in a place like I feel
- 10:37Speaker 3: as though I changed some things for the better. So, yeah, that.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 1: You know, they have now sorority coaches just like they
- 10:46Speaker 1: have college counselors.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Knock it off.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 10:49Speaker 1: So we've interviewed more than one, not only so they
- 10:53Speaker 1: have coaches that women hire them like senior year of
- 10:57Speaker 1: high school, and they start with cleaning up the girl's
- 10:59Speaker 1: social media and they pay thousands of dollars. When I
- 11:04Speaker 1: say thousands, I mean, thousands, what to drip, how to dress,
- 11:09Speaker 1: what to say. And when we've spoken to them and
- 11:12Speaker 1: I always feel bad sort of you know, rolling my eyes.
- 11:16Speaker 1: The truth is they say they're trying to help these girls.
- 11:18Speaker 1: It's almost like job interviews get to where they want
- 11:21Speaker 1: to be. So I guess from that perspective, I would,
- 11:24Speaker 1: my daughter ever asked me to hire her a sorority coach.
- 11:28Speaker 2: No way, but they have rush chair, rush coaches, excuse me.
- 11:33Speaker 1: They have now decorators for the dorm room. So we've
- 11:38Speaker 1: interviewed them where people are literally hiring interior decorators. designers
- 11:45Speaker 1: for dorm rooms or house rooms or whatever it is.
- 11:49Speaker 2: It is crazy.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I don't know that I could have handled that back then.
- 11:53Speaker 3: No, I think social media has really upped it too
- 11:56Speaker 3: because now everyone posts all of it. I did have
- 11:59Speaker 3: organic headboards made for Sophie and her roommate.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I did too. I can't lie. I bought one. I
- 12:04Speaker 2: definitely didn't have it made, but I did buy one
- 12:06Speaker 2: for Rachel.
- 12:07Speaker 3: But yeah, I think everything today is over the top.
- 12:10Speaker 3: You know, I hired college counselors for all my kids.
- 12:14Speaker 3: My ex didn't agree with it. He didn't agree with it.
- 12:16Speaker 3: So I paid for it. And so I don't know
- 12:19Speaker 3: that I would say no. Like if everyone going through
- 12:23Speaker 3: Rush was having a Rush coach, I would not want
- 12:26Speaker 3: to deny that of my daughter. But at the same time,
- 12:30Speaker 3: at the same time, I'm listening to your mother.
- 12:34Speaker 2: But Shannon, I'm telling you, if I paid.
- 12:36Speaker 1: $ 5, 000 for my kids' college coaches. It was like $ 5, 000
- 12:40Speaker 1: for a rush. Something like that. I don't remember exactly
- 12:43Speaker 1: what I paid. It was a while ago.
- 12:44Speaker 2: They're 24 and 26. But like a lot of money.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Not like silly money. Thousands.
- 12:50Speaker 1: So I think I would definitely like kind of rail
- 12:53Speaker 1: against that. It's funny because Gia, Jude Ice, who is
- 12:57Speaker 1: our other, who's my co-host on this pod, was.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Saying that, you know, Risa didn't know anything.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And so she was sort of able to say to her,
- 13:05Speaker 1: cause you know, Teresa was in a storage, mom, I
- 13:08Speaker 1: need this, I need that.
- 13:09Speaker 2: And okay, okay.
- 13:10Speaker 1: You know, maybe, you know, maybe that was a plus
- 13:14Speaker 1: because if Rachel had come to me and said, I
- 13:17Speaker 1: need an interior designer for my dorm room, we would
- 13:20Speaker 1: have had a very big problem.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:22Speaker 3: So I get it. I tried to be the interior
- 13:25Speaker 3: designer of my daughter's dorm room and that didn't go
- 13:27Speaker 3: over so well. No, it didn't go over so well.
- 13:30Speaker 3: She left half the stuff in the hallway. That I
- 13:33Speaker 3: paid to transport over there.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Oh, my daughter just leans on me completely. My son
- 13:38Speaker 2: will barely let me in the room. Can't take it.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Hey, I feel like you're a very good fit for this.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I don't know how much, I know you don't have
- 13:47Speaker 1: a lot of time in your life, but I would
- 13:48Speaker 1: really love to come back and talk like, I don't know,
- 13:51Speaker 1: other stuff, specifics about this life.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Because I love talking to you about it.
- 13:56Speaker 1: And I feel like, you know, a lot of the
- 13:59Speaker 1: girls that are listening are, Because especially to me, meaningful
- 14:03Speaker 1: is like what you just said about not getting in.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Because I would have not guessed that beautiful blonde Shannon
- 14:07Speaker 1: Storms didn't get into.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Well, it wasn't blonde then either, Jen.
- 14:12Speaker 2: There you go. It wasn't blonde. It was wearing pinstripes
- 14:15Speaker 2: and a big nose. So horrible. And look at you now.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I really appreciate your joining us.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Well, thank you for having me. It was so much fun.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Okay, you guys, so that is it for this episode
