- 0:07Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sports Very Daily on Radio Folkston bringing
- 0:09Speaker 1: you the Folkstone and Hive Sports Show. On today's show,
- 0:20Speaker 1: we have local football reports, a report on the Folkston
- 0:23Speaker 1: a Rotary Club half Marathon, an update on Folkston Indoor
- 0:28Speaker 1: Bowls Club open Day. We've got some Folks do and arrows,
- 0:39Speaker 1: wheelchair basketball news and any other sporty snippets that I
- 0:43Speaker 1: can slip in as it's going to be a busy show.
- 0:52Speaker 1: And my special guest is a media guru from the
- 0:55Speaker 1: Folks and Optimist Hockey Club, Amy Bumpstead, bringing us up
- 0:59Speaker 1: to date with what goes on at this this massive club.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It really is big, as you will find out in
- 1:04Speaker 1: the interview. But to get us started, and you know,
- 1:11Speaker 1: I always like to start with a belter to sit back,
- 1:16Speaker 1: get your air guitar out of the case, and a
- 1:21Speaker 1: duet Laila by Derek and the Dominoes. And do you
- 1:47Speaker 1: remember who the front man was for Derek and the Dominoes, Yes,
- 1:52Speaker 1: of course you do. It was Eric Clapton. And yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 1: I've heard a bunch of Eric Clapton in recent times.
- 1:58Speaker 1: He made some classic track So let's think laid Down Sally.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Oh yeah, the wonderful crooning song of a wonderful tonight
- 2:08Speaker 1: tears in Heaven and one of the we talked about
- 2:12Speaker 1: where songs take you back, I shot the sheriff. I'll
- 2:15Speaker 1: tell you about that another day because this is a
- 2:17Speaker 1: ballshell and we've got loads to get in. So we're
- 2:20Speaker 1: going to start with football folks in Victor who a
- 2:22Speaker 1: lawst Saturday traveled to Horsham in the FA Cup. That
- 2:25Speaker 1: was the third qualifying round and at one time we're
- 2:28Speaker 1: too kneeled down. However, the resilience of this team that
- 2:31Speaker 1: Jay Saunders has put together as persevered and came back
- 2:34Speaker 1: to win three to two against higher opposition. The reward
- 2:38Speaker 1: for this victory is and a wave fixture to South
- 2:41Speaker 1: End United in the next round. The club they are
- 2:44Speaker 1: two divisions higher and they will definitely be up for
- 2:47Speaker 1: it because they were dumped out of the Cup last
- 2:50Speaker 1: year if you remember, by sitting Born United. But before
- 2:53Speaker 1: all that happens in Victor travel to AFC Dunstable in Bedfordshire,
- 2:57Speaker 1: which is this Saturday. They got to play a game
- 3:00Speaker 1: in the FA Trophy third qualifying round. Well, let's face it,
- 3:03Speaker 1: there's a more realistic chance of getting to Wembley now
- 3:07Speaker 1: in the Scaffold Premier Division. High Town came unstuck again
- 3:10Speaker 1: on Saturday with NATO's four one away to Phoenix Sports.
- 3:14Speaker 1: The next game is on Sunday. Yes you heard that right,
- 3:17Speaker 1: It's on Sunday at home in the league, with an
- 3:20Speaker 1: eleven am kickoff against the Witstaball, who are currently tenth.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But Whitstaball are just like unstoppable in the FA Cup
- 3:28Speaker 1: after beating Hungerford tou Nil, a team that are two
- 3:31Speaker 1: steps higher in the football pyramid, but they face an
- 3:34Speaker 1: even tougher task in the next round as they've been
- 3:37Speaker 1: drawn against the National League side Wheelstone, who are four
- 3:41Speaker 1: steps higher. Remember that Witchaball are the lowest ranked club
- 3:45Speaker 1: in the FA Cup, but good luck to them. We'll
- 3:47Speaker 1: be keeping one eye on them and hopefully getting a
- 3:50Speaker 1: reporting from Ellis the visio. Moving on to the NLG
- 3:55Speaker 1: Kent County Premier League and New Romney. We're beaten three
- 3:58Speaker 1: to one by Meridian VP. Now I had to look
- 4:01Speaker 1: this up, but the VP stands for a valley park.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They must be where they play and Hawkins lost two
- 4:06Speaker 1: one to Stansfield. This Saturday. New Romney are away to
- 4:11Speaker 1: Snotlantown Reserves in the Interregional Challenge Cup and Meridian VP
- 4:15Speaker 1: who come from Greenwich have to travel south yet again
- 4:19Speaker 1: as they visit Hawkings in a league of fixture. We
- 4:22Speaker 1: are going to move on to ellis Beckstar and take
- 4:25Speaker 1: me home, Sophie ellis Beekstar two thousand and one, Take
- 4:46Speaker 1: me home. Folks in. The Victor women's team suffered their
- 4:57Speaker 1: first feet of the season when they lost two nilaway
- 5:00Speaker 1: to Herne Bay and the moment they've got a week
- 5:02Speaker 1: off for their next fixture is on Sunday, the twelfth
- 5:04Speaker 1: of October, when they traveled to the Abbey School to
- 5:07Speaker 1: play against the Faversham Strike Force. And finally, folks in
- 5:12Speaker 1: the Victor's disability team came unstuck against the very decent
- 5:15Speaker 1: Chelsea Disability side in the London Inclusion League when they
- 5:19Speaker 1: lost six nill at home on the Three Hills artificial pitch.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Manager Garrett Wilson wasn't very happy with this size performance
- 5:26Speaker 1: and was quoted as saying we can definitely play a
- 5:29Speaker 1: lot better than today. We need to be sharper in
- 5:31Speaker 1: a few areas and also work as a unit. But
- 5:35Speaker 1: there was a man of the match on that day.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Man of the Match went to Sunny Perry. Now the
- 5:40Speaker 1: hockey season is just a couple of weeks old, so
- 5:42Speaker 1: I thought it's a bad time. We had a chat
- 5:44Speaker 1: with Optimist communications secretary, that's her push name. I call
- 5:48Speaker 1: her the OPS media guru. So welcome back to radio
- 5:51Speaker 1: folks and studio, Amy Bump said, Amy, how are you?
- 5:54Speaker 2: I'm good, Cave, how are you?
- 5:55Speaker 1: Yeah? Good, excellent, And it's good to see you back
- 5:58Speaker 1: in the studio. And now have you a quiet summer.
- 6:02Speaker 2: It eases off a little bit, but there's still lots
- 6:04Speaker 2: of stuff to do. Obviously during the summer we run
- 6:06Speaker 2: our Friday night mix league, which keeps me quite cavesly occupied.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And the obviously it's a lot of prep for the
- 6:12Speaker 2: new season as well, sorting out fixtures, getting sponsors on board.
- 6:16Speaker 2: So yeah, there's always something going.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Always something going on, right, Okay, So I think what
- 6:21Speaker 1: we're going to do. We're going to talk about stuff
- 6:23Speaker 1: that goes off the pitch. First. Now, it's a massive club.
- 6:27Speaker 1: How many teams have you got running now?
- 6:29Speaker 2: So we're at the point now we've got eight men's teams,
- 6:32Speaker 2: six ladies teams, a couple of masters teams, and then
- 6:35Speaker 2: we've got juniors from under eight all the way through
- 6:37Speaker 2: to under eighteen.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Wow, I operation if you add all those players up together,
- 6:42Speaker 1: I mean it must come to well, I don't know,
- 6:43Speaker 1: a couple of hundred.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we're all pushing about four hundred members.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Four hundreds. Oh well so yeah, so you've got to
- 6:50Speaker 1: have a big team behind the scenes. So start from
- 6:54Speaker 1: the top if you like. How does it work. What's
- 6:57Speaker 1: the hierarchy of the club.
- 6:59Speaker 2: So we obviously have antier committee that run the run
- 7:02Speaker 2: the club on the member's behalf. We have our chair
- 7:04Speaker 2: vice chair, and then we have everything from things like treasurer.
- 7:08Speaker 2: We have section coordinators, we have social coordinators, we have
- 7:12Speaker 2: myself doing all the comms and the media work. We
- 7:15Speaker 2: have safeguarding, like everything that you could think of it.
- 7:18Speaker 1: It's probably right right, I mean, that's an interesting one.
- 7:21Speaker 1: A safeguard in safeguarding must be a tough old job.
- 7:25Speaker 1: But it's every club as a safeguarding officer, now, don't
- 7:29Speaker 1: they Yeah.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Now for England Hockey, every club has to have a
- 7:31Speaker 2: safeguarding officer. Obviously we always hope that they're very quiet,
- 7:36Speaker 2: but there is always stuff going on behind and it
- 7:38Speaker 2: is really important that we have that person in place
- 7:40Speaker 2: to deal with anything that comes up.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah, right, So what else we've got. So you've got
- 7:46Speaker 1: a busy old job with the media, and do you
- 7:50Speaker 1: have travel prizing reports out of your eighteen six fifteen captains?
- 7:55Speaker 2: Of some of them, some are better, some are better
- 7:58Speaker 2: than others. Yeah, some of very good at kind of
- 8:00Speaker 2: getting it done, just sending it's three straight away. Some
- 8:03Speaker 2: have to be prized out, some will just kind of
- 8:06Speaker 2: write little little paragraph. A couple of them are more
- 8:09Speaker 2: towards the essailor there's some very good writers.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Some of the reports. Yeah, some of the reports are
- 8:16Speaker 1: are fantastic. And then you get other reports. Yeah, lost one, Neil,
- 8:21Speaker 1: but yeah, I love reading them and or congratulations to
- 8:25Speaker 1: everybody that sends them in because just lately and they've
- 8:28Speaker 1: been on my inbox on a Sunday evening at least
- 8:31Speaker 1: on a Monday morning, which is great. So, I mean,
- 8:36Speaker 1: even something like the fixtures you've got all those teams.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Do the league pick the fixtures and let you know
- 8:44Speaker 1: and then you have to correlate with your opponents.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah, so essentially the league will produce a massive fixtures document.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So if you imagine there are so for the men
- 8:53Speaker 2: there are eleven levels of league that we play in,
- 8:58Speaker 2: so it's a lot of fixtures to coordinate and then
- 9:00Speaker 2: a massive document will come out and then it'll be
- 9:03Speaker 2: down to the clubs to pick their own home times,
- 9:06Speaker 2: sort out pitch slots and things like that and then
- 9:08Speaker 2: communicate that to opposition.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Right okay, but I mean I suppose the beauty of
- 9:14Speaker 1: it is that you do have two pitches to play with,
- 9:17Speaker 1: don't you.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, we're very lucky. There's a lot of clubs that
- 9:21Speaker 2: either have one pitch or they don't even actually have
- 9:23Speaker 2: their own pitch. They have to rent from schools that
- 9:25Speaker 2: rent from local councils. So we're in a really really
- 9:28Speaker 2: lucky position. A lot of other clubs.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the Three Hills and the Hockey of
- 9:34Speaker 1: moved now is ten years over ten years now, but
- 9:37Speaker 1: there must have been a massive growth in their time
- 9:39Speaker 1: as there.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Oh, it's been huge. I mean, going from one pitch
- 9:42Speaker 2: that we had to rent off the council to having
- 9:44Speaker 2: two of our own sports, all our own facilities. It's
- 9:49Speaker 2: really brought people in. And then when there was quite
- 9:51Speaker 2: a boom during in the Olympics, it always obviously raises
- 9:55Speaker 2: interest in the sport. Gets new people in. We do
- 9:57Speaker 2: a lot of work going into primary schools as well,
- 10:00Speaker 2: do outreach work, so that brings new members in as well.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Oh that's interesting, So tell me a little bit about that.
- 10:05Speaker 2: So we have a couple of sort of volunteer coaches
- 10:08Speaker 2: who will go into primary schools and deliver hockey to them.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Most schools don't have pe specialists, let alone hockey specialists
- 10:15Speaker 2: at primary level, so we're able to go and deliver
- 10:17Speaker 2: that to sort of our local town council schools. And
- 10:20Speaker 2: then obviously we give the word out about what the club,
- 10:22Speaker 2: what the club does, and bring June.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Okay, So these volunteers they kind of turn up and
- 10:27Speaker 1: with like lots of I don't know, children's style hockey,
- 10:33Speaker 1: yeah and pieces.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they'll go in with kind of appropriate drills and
- 10:37Speaker 2: practices and games and things like that to try and
- 10:39Speaker 2: get the kids interested and engaged in the sport.
- 10:42Speaker 1: But the kids love it actually because it's something they're
- 10:44Speaker 1: trying for the first time. I mean, certainly, when I
- 10:47Speaker 1: was growing up many many years ago, it was football
- 10:49Speaker 1: and cricket and that was about the end of it,
- 10:51Speaker 1: and hockey was more of a not not an elite,
- 10:54Speaker 1: but it was more of a university type of school,
- 10:57Speaker 1: wasn't it, And we had more.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Of a kind of private school universe to it. But
- 11:01Speaker 2: over the last or probably ten to fifteen years, it
- 11:03Speaker 2: has really developed and has played more in a general
- 11:06Speaker 2: state schools.
- 11:07Speaker 1: That's brilliant. I've been down there and seen the kids
- 11:10Speaker 1: playing and they absolutely love it. Oh and one thing,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I've been down there before and there's been because you've
- 11:18Speaker 1: got the facilities, You've had like a junior tournament, haven't you.
- 11:21Speaker 1: We're all the.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, so we always host it's normally the under tens,
- 11:25Speaker 2: but we have like county tournaments at the end of
- 11:27Speaker 2: the season, so lots of different clubs across the county
- 11:30Speaker 2: will host different age groups. Like I said, we normally
- 11:32Speaker 2: end up with the under tens, which is somewhere between
- 11:35Speaker 2: sort of thirty and forty boys teams. And then the
- 11:38Speaker 2: same thing.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been down its many It's crazy.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Is he crazy? Yeah, it's so good seeing so many
- 11:44Speaker 2: kids enjoying the sport that we love. Yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Right, and if you've got so many teams, probably for
- 11:53Speaker 1: the more senior teams, there is an individual person that
- 11:56Speaker 1: picks the team. But as every team got a a
- 12:00Speaker 1: manager or do they rely on on on captains?
- 12:04Speaker 2: So our higher level teams will normally have a coach
- 12:07Speaker 2: manager sort of in place, but then from their leading
- 12:10Speaker 2: down it is the captains that will be in charge
- 12:13Speaker 2: of their selection. Quite often they will get together kind
- 12:16Speaker 2: of have a little chat and obviously the top level
- 12:18Speaker 2: pick first and then and then it kind of weaves
- 12:20Speaker 2: its way down. But yeah, it is generally down to
- 12:22Speaker 2: the captains, a little bit of input from from others
- 12:25Speaker 2: about who this like, so.
- 12:26Speaker 1: A little bit down the junior level. I mean, you
- 12:28Speaker 1: have to enlighten me on this one. I don't know
- 12:29Speaker 1: the answer to this one. Is it a rolling sub
- 12:32Speaker 1: If someone goes off, can they come back on again?
- 12:34Speaker 2: So all of hockey is rolling subs.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Even in the senior even in the city as well.
- 12:38Speaker 2: So you can have a squad of up to sixteen
- 12:40Speaker 2: on a match day, so you've got your eleven and
- 12:42Speaker 2: then your five subs and it is rolling constantly. There
- 12:45Speaker 2: is no kind of once you're off, you're.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Off, like oh that's good. Yeah, So if someone gets
- 12:49Speaker 1: gets taken off, then you know they've kind of got
- 12:52Speaker 1: to keep warming and note and knowing that they might
- 12:53Speaker 1: be called back on again.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Definitely, and especially at the top level. The idea is
- 12:57Speaker 2: that our players work really, really hard for a short period.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I see actually are forwards. We tell them to blast,
- 13:03Speaker 2: They blast for kind of seven or eight minutes, go off,
- 13:06Speaker 2: have a rest, and then go and do it again. Okay,
- 13:08Speaker 2: so high intensity for short periods of time.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah. So it's quite tactical then, because I suppose that
- 13:13Speaker 1: the coach can see if there's any weaknesses in the
- 13:15Speaker 1: opposition and think, oh right, you know, we're plug on
- 13:18Speaker 1: that one there.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a big opportunity to be able to shuffle
- 13:20Speaker 2: things around, move people around, try different tactics. Yeah, it
- 13:24Speaker 2: works really well, and it's nice to have that little
- 13:26Speaker 2: bit of recovery. Well, I say, have the recovery. All
- 13:28Speaker 2: the others have the recovery. I stand.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Well, we're going to come to that about the second
- 13:33Speaker 1: team and very shortly. But what we're going to do now,
- 13:36Speaker 1: we're going to take a little music break and it
- 13:38Speaker 1: will be back straight after this track from the nineties. Okay,
- 13:53Speaker 1: now we're back with Amy and we were just talking
- 13:57Speaker 1: about the second team. Goalkeeper's a bit of a dodgy position.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I know, they're always covered up, aren't they. You just
- 14:04Speaker 1: don't know who's in goal, But amy, where do you play?
- 14:07Speaker 2: So I am that person that sounds in the goal
- 14:10Speaker 2: and go on, hit me with them projectile?
- 14:13Speaker 1: Yeah, are you the person in orange on the website?
- 14:17Speaker 1: The picture of it's like you're diving across a lot
- 14:20Speaker 1: of Superman.
- 14:21Speaker 2: That is I was super lady that someone took a
- 14:23Speaker 2: really good picture of me last year, So I'm going
- 14:25Speaker 2: to use that.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I bet you get the hell stick taken out the
- 14:28Speaker 1: hoky stick taking oiver that one. Okay. So now last
- 14:32Speaker 1: week I popped down there and I watched some of
- 14:35Speaker 1: the games and I had to get my head around
- 14:38Speaker 1: it at first, because certainly the Ladies every single game
- 14:43Speaker 1: was on the three heels pitch, and I couldn't work
- 14:46Speaker 1: it out how they're going to crammel them games in.
- 14:48Speaker 1: So can you explain that. I do know the answer,
- 14:51Speaker 1: but please explain to our listeners what was going on
- 14:53Speaker 1: last Saturday.
- 14:54Speaker 2: So we had a bit of a weird weird one
- 14:56Speaker 2: last Saturday in the fact that all our Ladies teams
- 14:58Speaker 2: were at home. However, technically two teams were away. So
- 15:02Speaker 2: unfortunately our Ladies ones got relegated last season, which has
- 15:05Speaker 2: put them in the same league as our ladies twos,
- 15:08Speaker 2: whereas our ladies' fives got promoted and to put them
- 15:11Speaker 2: in the same league as the sports. So they were
- 15:14Speaker 2: all playing each other this weekend, which was it's been
- 15:16Speaker 2: a really weird week kind of. Even from the training
- 15:19Speaker 2: we separated normally we'll train all together as the ones
- 15:22Speaker 2: and two squad. We were literally other end of the pitch,
- 15:25Speaker 2: not speaking to each other, doing our own thing. It
- 15:28Speaker 2: was funny but weird.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I thought it was changing. And on the
- 15:32Speaker 1: actual game, I mean, was there any sort of was
- 15:35Speaker 1: it better or was it was down to, like, you know,
- 15:37Speaker 1: win this game.
- 15:38Speaker 2: It was probably a little bit of bad to sort
- 15:39Speaker 2: of during the week building up to things, just little
- 15:42Speaker 2: jokes here and there, but kind of when it came
- 15:44Speaker 2: to game, they we all knew that we were there
- 15:46Speaker 2: for a specific Greek so we tried to be kind
- 15:49Speaker 2: of as professional essentially about it as possible and kind
- 15:52Speaker 2: of go out and play the best that we can,
- 15:54Speaker 2: kind of representing the club to everybody.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, right, And unfortunately the went if you like,
- 16:01Speaker 1: on paper ere it should have done the first one
- 16:03Speaker 1: three Neil didn't they it did?
- 16:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, realistically our first should win. They should
- 16:08Speaker 2: be their second, our second eleven. But it was a
- 16:11Speaker 2: really good game. The Ones went up really quickly, but
- 16:14Speaker 2: we did kind of really hold them back. We defended
- 16:17Speaker 2: really really well. Our coach Will was really proud of
- 16:20Speaker 2: the team, and I know Danny was really proud of
- 16:22Speaker 2: how the Ones played as well. They elevated themselves and
- 16:25Speaker 2: got the result that they needed.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, And so switching to the other two teams
- 16:30Speaker 1: that played each other, which you weren't involved with, But
- 16:33Speaker 1: do you know anything about that game?
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah? Again, I saw bits of it looked like a
- 16:36Speaker 2: really good game. Again, like I was very competitive, people
- 16:39Speaker 2: wanting to do the best they can. I think they
- 16:41Speaker 2: sounded a little more controversial than ours. There was an
- 16:44Speaker 2: early disallowed goal fives, but then obviously the fours pulled
- 16:48Speaker 2: away and they got the got the result that theoretically
- 16:51Speaker 2: should have been.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Been so funny enough. It was the same score,
- 16:54Speaker 1: wasn't it three, Neil? Yeah?
- 16:56Speaker 2: Exactly the same results?
- 16:57Speaker 1: Right? Yeah? Yeah, So in theory everything kind of Winter
- 17:00Speaker 1: the Winter playing, isn't it on paper? Yeah? Form form style, Yeah, in.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Terms of form and in terms of it kind of
- 17:06Speaker 2: shows actually the selection that's been made, is right, and
- 17:10Speaker 2: kind of the tactics have been put in place a
- 17:12Speaker 2: right because the higher eleven, yes, one on both sides.
- 17:15Speaker 1: So if someone is let's say, first against the second.
- 17:18Speaker 1: So if someone is signed on for the second team,
- 17:20Speaker 1: they can't play for the first team.
- 17:22Speaker 2: There is a little bit of maneuverability. Yeah, in terms
- 17:25Speaker 2: of obviously we have quite an open selection policy and
- 17:28Speaker 2: people are chosen on merit. So even next week one
- 17:31Speaker 2: of our girls is going up to play for the
- 17:33Speaker 2: once because she had a cracking game last week and
- 17:35Speaker 2: actually deserves that.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Oh so that's allowed, is it?
- 17:38Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, yeah, it does get to a point later
- 17:40Speaker 2: in the season that gets very complicated that if you've
- 17:42Speaker 2: played a certain percentage for one team. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 17:46Speaker 2: it gets very tricky. There's a lot of very all
- 17:48Speaker 2: conversations had.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Okay, so I mean it still still gives the team
- 17:54Speaker 1: in the seconds an incentive to get into the first thing,
- 17:57Speaker 1: isn't it. They're not stuck in the seconds.
- 17:59Speaker 2: And because we try together as a ones and two squad, like,
- 18:02Speaker 2: we can always see where the opportunities are. We see
- 18:05Speaker 2: kind of who our equivalent is in that first eleven
- 18:08Speaker 2: and kind of whose spot we could try and pinch.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Right. So just briefly the other two games, it looks
- 18:17Speaker 1: like the third team they beat Maystone three one. But
- 18:22Speaker 1: I just feel sorry for the six team at the moment.
- 18:25Speaker 1: It's a brand new team, isn't it? Tell us about
- 18:27Speaker 1: the six team?
- 18:28Speaker 2: Yeah, so the six team have come in this year.
- 18:31Speaker 2: The fact that we've got a six team is incredible,
- 18:33Speaker 2: going from when I started, we had just about how
- 18:36Speaker 2: three ladies teams, so now to have six and our
- 18:39Speaker 2: sixes is a dedicated development side. So normally for adult hockey,
- 18:43Speaker 2: the kids can start to play when they're thirteen, but
- 18:45Speaker 2: these development sides, they're go in the bottom leagues. They
- 18:48Speaker 2: can't come out with the bottom leagues. But the kids
- 18:50Speaker 2: can play when they're twelve, so it's kind of like
- 18:52Speaker 2: a more gentle introduction into adult hockey. And normally it's
- 18:56Speaker 2: a mix of youngsters and quite experienced players that maybe
- 18:59Speaker 2: have played at a high level and are coming back down.
- 19:01Speaker 2: So it's kind of a nice introduction for them coming in.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Yes, but unfortunately they have had a game yet, have they. No,
- 19:06Speaker 1: they've had two unfortunate weeks, haven't they.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, So their first week was a bye because there's
- 19:11Speaker 2: an odd number of teams in the league, and then
- 19:13Speaker 2: unfortunately on Saturday their opposition conceded.
- 19:16Speaker 1: All right, so that's what they call a walkover, isn't it.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Yes?
- 19:19Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, So what happens in a walkover? Do they
- 19:21Speaker 1: get the points? Anyway?
- 19:23Speaker 2: Generally they will get the points. They'll get an automatic
- 19:25Speaker 2: five nil win.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Five nil, yeah, and then it goes through. Okay, so
- 19:28Speaker 1: they haven't played the game for everyone five. Yeah. They've
- 19:31Speaker 1: done very well though, Okay, So, I mean the men's
- 19:33Speaker 1: was a little bit more straightforward. Having said that, it
- 19:36Speaker 1: looks like there was two divisions that had an odd
- 19:41Speaker 1: number in them, isn't they. Yeah?
- 19:42Speaker 2: Again, I think our threes and our sixes have got
- 19:44Speaker 2: I think they've got eleven teams in their league instead
- 19:46Speaker 2: of twelve. So they both had their bi weeks this week.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Right, Well, the men's first team, they didn't do so
- 19:53Speaker 1: well the first week out, did they? How did they
- 19:55Speaker 1: get on?
- 19:56Speaker 2: So they went up to Woking for their first game.
- 19:59Speaker 2: They lost for one, but they got promoted last season,
- 20:02Speaker 2: so they've gone into our Southeast Premier Division, which essentially
- 20:06Speaker 2: is one league below national level. So it's really really high, right,
- 20:10Speaker 2: and there's teams that have been in that league for
- 20:12Speaker 2: quite a long time, very established, some very very good
- 20:15Speaker 2: teams and very good players in that league. So it
- 20:18Speaker 2: is a big jump up for them. This week they
- 20:20Speaker 2: did really well. They got their first points on the board,
- 20:23Speaker 2: which is the main, my main.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Thing for Yeah, they drew too all at home against
- 20:27Speaker 1: Marden And I was speaking to Joe Tolhurst from the
- 20:31Speaker 1: first team after the four one win and he said, yeah,
- 20:34Speaker 1: that was against Woke in and he said, yeah, they
- 20:36Speaker 1: were very drilled. They kind of if you like, been
- 20:40Speaker 1: playing together for a long time, knew what they were doing,
- 20:43Speaker 1: but they felt that they learned a lot from it
- 20:46Speaker 1: and they really thought that they could cope with that
- 20:48Speaker 1: sort of they never love hockey.
- 20:50Speaker 2: There's some really experienced players in our men's ones, and
- 20:54Speaker 2: I think they will I think they will be okay,
- 20:56Speaker 2: But I say they're going to come up against some
- 20:57Speaker 2: very drilled, very organized teams. Yeah, but they've got that
- 21:01Speaker 2: ability there to do that and to go and compete
- 21:03Speaker 2: with these teams as they showed on Saturday.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Right. So we've got eight men's teams, like we said,
- 21:08Speaker 1: unfortunately the thirds and the sixth team and they've got
- 21:11Speaker 1: an odd number so they didn't get a game, but
- 21:15Speaker 1: looking at the results, I mean it wasn't about our
- 21:16Speaker 1: week really was it for the teams? Yeah, it was
- 21:19Speaker 1: a good one. Yeah. So when you said that about
- 21:23Speaker 1: they're playing if you like, one step down from national
- 21:28Speaker 1: just for arguing and saying, what happened If to folks
- 21:30Speaker 1: and Optimus first eleven got promoted, what would their options be?
- 21:34Speaker 2: So if they obviously got promoted out of the league
- 21:36Speaker 2: they're in now, which is the Southeast prem they would
- 21:38Speaker 2: go into a National South League. So hockey's very much
- 21:42Speaker 2: it's regionalized. So we've got a national league at the top,
- 21:45Speaker 2: and then the next league's down are sort of North
- 21:47Speaker 2: and South National, and then the country splits into eight
- 21:50Speaker 2: areas and then obviously that's all pyramided up and down.
- 21:52Speaker 2: So in kind of a football terms, if our national
- 21:55Speaker 2: league's premier, our men's ones are probably kind of like
- 21:58Speaker 2: a Division one. Yeah, so they won just one below
- 22:01Speaker 2: our national league level, right.
- 22:02Speaker 1: So I mean if they did go up there, you
- 22:05Speaker 1: could be talking about if you've got an outstanding player,
- 22:08Speaker 1: could be talking about knocking on the door of the
- 22:09Speaker 1: England side.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. Well, the international scene is quite different, is it.
- 22:15Speaker 2: With hockey, a lot of it gets picked up. A
- 22:18Speaker 2: lot of players get picked up when they're at university
- 22:20Speaker 2: and then kind of put through Like the England hockey program,
- 22:23Speaker 2: they're picked up at a junior level and then worked
- 22:25Speaker 2: their way through. But then people do get picked up
- 22:28Speaker 2: from games from clubs. It is more the bigger known
- 22:33Speaker 2: clubs that are playing at national league. Yeah, they tend
- 22:36Speaker 2: to be the ones that get picked up.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Okay. So okay, so we've established you've got eight men's teams,
- 22:41Speaker 1: six ladies teams, so they all play on Saturday, so
- 22:45Speaker 1: let's turn our attentions to Sundays. What happens on Sunday
- 22:49Speaker 1: up there, But tell us about the junior sections.
- 22:51Speaker 2: So yeah, the junior session is massive. Now, like I said,
- 22:55Speaker 2: we run sides from under eights through to under eighteens,
- 22:58Speaker 2: but we do accept kids from basically when they start
- 23:02Speaker 2: primary school. So we have a session in what we
- 23:04Speaker 2: call our cage, which is for kind of the real
- 23:07Speaker 2: little ones. It's obviously it's a lot of motor skills
- 23:10Speaker 2: and just getting them introduced to the sport and trying
- 23:12Speaker 2: to get them to enjoy it.
- 23:14Speaker 1: How old were the youngest ones breathing four or five,
- 23:18Speaker 1: four or five. Well, so the hockey sticks must be
- 23:21Speaker 1: like tiny.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah, they're pretty small, very small.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Softball I think, Yeah.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Yeah, softball a bigger ball as well. Yeah, which helps
- 23:30Speaker 2: them out.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Oh great, But like you say, it's if they do
- 23:33Speaker 1: take to it, then you've got to start somewhere exactly.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Yeah, there's quite a few kids in there at the
- 23:38Speaker 2: moment that are children of current players children. Yeah, it
- 23:43Speaker 2: is a big family affair that try to bring the kids.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Through, right, So you go from five or six year olds,
- 23:49Speaker 1: so guide me through these sort of age groups, age
- 23:52Speaker 1: groups that they go up till they become seniors.
- 23:55Speaker 2: So they will play it kind of under eight tens, twelve, right, fourteen, sixteen, eighteens.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Obviously when they hit thirteen, they can play in adult
- 24:02Speaker 2: sides as well, so it might be that they're playing
- 24:04Speaker 2: Saturday for their adult side, Sunday for their junior side.
- 24:07Speaker 2: So yeah, they get a lot.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Of action, right. Well, yeah, it's funny you say that
- 24:11Speaker 1: because in more recent years where they were the under
- 24:15Speaker 1: fourteen's boys side, they were they played and got to
- 24:19Speaker 1: a National Cup, didn't they. And I watched quite a
- 24:25Speaker 1: few of the semi finals and some of the games
- 24:27Speaker 1: and you could see that some of them have been
- 24:29Speaker 1: playing with the men's mens and they played like men,
- 24:34Speaker 1: you know, like they picked up the skills for the men.
- 24:37Speaker 1: So so playing on a Saturday and a Sunday is
- 24:41Speaker 1: just it can't be anything. But they're doing them, doing
- 24:43Speaker 1: them good.
- 24:44Speaker 2: No, the more match practice they get is fantastic. And
- 24:47Speaker 2: obviously playing with the.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Men, they having senior players around him.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Kind of teaches them how to how to play the
- 24:52Speaker 2: game as well, rather than just the skills, which is fantastic.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Right now, the thing that strikes me is that you've
- 24:59Speaker 1: got all these so you've got so many men's ladies
- 25:03Speaker 1: teams and so many junior teams. I know you've got
- 25:06Speaker 1: two pitches, but how one of you managed like giving
- 25:09Speaker 1: time up for training.
- 25:11Speaker 2: It's a bit of a logistical nightment at the beginning
- 25:14Speaker 2: of every season. But our section coordinator, so one Men's
- 25:17Speaker 2: Ladies and Junior's coordinator will get together. They will kind
- 25:21Speaker 2: of hash out a plan of what pitch base they
- 25:23Speaker 2: need for all of their teams. They will then speak
- 25:25Speaker 2: to three Hills and get all that booked in and
- 25:28Speaker 2: sorted through them.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Right, Okay, so it does all work. Then eventually it
- 25:32Speaker 1: does work.
- 25:32Speaker 2: It's like a massive jigsaw. Yeah, everything in it shaped holes.
- 25:37Speaker 1: And would you say you've got all these teams? Would
- 25:40Speaker 1: you say if you like, you're mixed out at the
- 25:41Speaker 1: moment or would you I mean, I can't remember when
- 25:44Speaker 1: there was only like four ladies teams and now now
- 25:47Speaker 1: you're up to the fifteen. Came in a couple of
- 25:49Speaker 1: years ago and thought, oh wow, fifty five teams and
- 25:52Speaker 1: now you've got a six team. So is there room
- 25:54Speaker 1: to move in the club.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Obviously we always hope that there's room to move. We
- 25:58Speaker 2: always hope that we attract more play More players means
- 26:01Speaker 2: more teams. Yeah, yeah, good, good, that's great. There's no
- 26:05Speaker 2: ceiling to it, which is great right now.
- 26:08Speaker 1: And we spoke earlier about all the people behind the scenes,
- 26:11Speaker 1: you know, the coaches and managers and captains. But one
- 26:15Speaker 1: thing that is really important because you get two in
- 26:18Speaker 1: every game is umpires. I mean, if someone, if you like,
- 26:22Speaker 1: has got a wants to try umpireing and really wants
- 26:26Speaker 1: to go for it, perhaps they doe hockey days are
- 26:28Speaker 1: overall injuries and what is the path that they can choose?
- 26:32Speaker 2: So England Hockey offer a lot of umpiring courses they're
- 26:36Speaker 2: normally done online, so you can obviously register for those courses,
- 26:40Speaker 2: take the course, but then you have to be assessed.
- 26:43Speaker 2: So different levels of hockey require different levels of qualification. Obviously,
- 26:47Speaker 2: the higher standard you're playing, the higher standard of qualification
- 26:50Speaker 2: you need. So our top men's ones, men's and ladies
- 26:54Speaker 2: ones and twos get what we call Paul umpires, so
- 26:56Speaker 2: they are given to us by buying by Southeast Hockey.
- 27:00Speaker 2: They're organized for us, but then everyone else the home
- 27:03Speaker 2: club provides both umpires. So obviously we will put our
- 27:06Speaker 2: umpires through courses. We have sort of a lot of
- 27:09Speaker 2: junior umpires, so we try and get them in early.
- 27:11Speaker 2: They go through their courses and then they will get assessed.
- 27:13Speaker 2: So basically they have to umpire a game while being
- 27:16Speaker 2: watched by somebody to make sure that they're up to.
- 27:19Speaker 1: The right standing right And I mean, do you ever
- 27:24Speaker 1: turn up at a game and they're struggling for umpires
- 27:26Speaker 1: and somebody els to go in. Do they still have
- 27:28Speaker 1: to be qualified? Yeah, one of the mums.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Junior level, it's a bit easy flexible. But with our
- 27:36Speaker 2: Saturday League games, yeah, those those top teams and most
- 27:39Speaker 2: of the way through I think it's only sort of
- 27:41Speaker 2: the men's and ladies bottom teams that can have sort
- 27:44Speaker 2: of an unassessed That's what I'm saying. Yeah, they've not
- 27:48Speaker 2: necessarily been assessed. But yeah, umpiring is always a tough
- 27:52Speaker 2: one for us because a lot of people are still playing,
- 27:54Speaker 2: so they will balance their playing and their umpiring in
- 27:57Speaker 2: the same days. Again, it's lots of try organized.
- 28:00Speaker 1: So were the first, the men's first and the ladies first?
- 28:03Speaker 1: Do you in the club? Do you have any umpires
- 28:06Speaker 1: that are in that pool that go to other games?
- 28:10Speaker 2: We don't this year that I'm aware of. We have
- 28:12Speaker 2: in previous years. We've kind of put umpires into the pool,
- 28:16Speaker 2: but then they will never umpire us. They'll be off umpire.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Right, yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay. Last little bit I want
- 28:22Speaker 1: to talk about is if you like they call it
- 28:25Speaker 1: master's hockey, don't they? So, I mean, people can play
- 28:29Speaker 1: hockey from under fives to I mean, there's a certain
- 28:33Speaker 1: gentleman that plays for England and how old is he?
- 28:36Speaker 2: So, Brian now is eighty five?
- 28:40Speaker 1: Eighty five? This is Brian Murrall we're talking about. So
- 28:43Speaker 1: you can go from five to eighty five, Yeah, exactly, that.
- 28:46Speaker 2: There is no stop. So yeah. So so master's hockey
- 28:48Speaker 2: starts at over thirty fives and it goes up in
- 28:51Speaker 2: five year brackets. We had four players go to European
- 28:55Speaker 2: Championships last year, two gents, so Brian with the over
- 28:59Speaker 2: eight sees, Nick who was the over fifties for England,
- 29:03Speaker 2: and then we had Steph who was representing Scotland for
- 29:07Speaker 2: the over thirty fives and Claire who was representing the
- 29:10Speaker 2: Alliance for over thirty fives, which is essentially kind of
- 29:13Speaker 2: the Barbarians of hot It's a bit of a michmash
- 29:15Speaker 2: of lots of different nations coming together. So they all
- 29:18Speaker 2: went out to Valenciays playing in European Championships.
- 29:23Speaker 1: It's great that there's not many sports that go on
- 29:26Speaker 1: to that age. Not really at all. I can't think
- 29:30Speaker 1: of well at all. Of course. The other thing you do,
- 29:32Speaker 1: big pat on the back to all those that represented
- 29:34Speaker 1: the countries from folks and optimists is, of course the
- 29:39Speaker 1: summer league, if you like, is a mixed game, isn't it.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yeah, So we're one of the only sports as well
- 29:44Speaker 2: that plays mixed So we run a mixed league over
- 29:47Speaker 2: the summer, which essentially is you play with five men,
- 29:50Speaker 2: five ladies and a goalkeeper so it's a nice a
- 29:53Speaker 2: nice even split and then the game. The game gets
- 29:55Speaker 2: played as normal, but it is a men's ladies mixed
- 29:58Speaker 2: mixed side and our Friday night one. It's very sociable.
- 30:01Speaker 2: It's it's a very high standard now as well. It's
- 30:04Speaker 2: really developed over the last few years and we get
- 30:06Speaker 2: teams over from sort of Canterbury Deal, Herne Baylcom even
- 30:11Speaker 2: the team from far down as Hastings all come up
- 30:14Speaker 2: on a Friday night and we have a great time.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Right. That's another tick on the box really for the facilities,
- 30:22Speaker 1: because you can do it, caren't you. Two pitches a
- 30:26Speaker 1: couple of games.
- 30:27Speaker 2: We put four games through and through an evening. Yeah,
- 30:31Speaker 2: and obviously having those two pitches.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Really well do that well. I mean amy for somebody
- 30:37Speaker 1: that plays hockey and they must just absolutely love the
- 30:42Speaker 1: buzz that goes on down at the Optimists. You've got
- 30:45Speaker 1: so much going on considering I remember over ten years
- 30:49Speaker 1: ago when we used to play from the other pavilion,
- 30:53Speaker 1: the cricket pavilion, and the pitches were all grass and
- 30:57Speaker 1: you never saw them looking so good as they did
- 30:59Speaker 1: at East.
- 31:00Speaker 2: They're perfect back then.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Oh, I remember the hockey pictures. There were a lot
- 31:06Speaker 1: of bowling greens at Easter because of the Easter tournament.
- 31:10Speaker 1: But now Amy, it's been really really good just getting
- 31:13Speaker 1: up to day. I love having you come in and
- 31:16Speaker 1: telling me and everybody out there about the Optimists. So
- 31:19Speaker 1: is there anything else you want to add? Let's wind
- 31:22Speaker 1: it up with I don't know any contact details, an
- 31:25Speaker 1: if someone wants to get back to hockey, how do
- 31:28Speaker 1: they get in touch with you?
- 31:29Speaker 2: So the best way to get in contact with us
- 31:31Speaker 2: is either through our website all through our social media pages.
- 31:34Speaker 2: We're on Facebook, we're on Instagram, so you can find
- 31:37Speaker 2: a lot of information on there and obviously all our
- 31:39Speaker 2: contact details as well.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Amy, thank you so much for coming in. It's a
- 31:42Speaker 1: bit of pleasure to speak to you. And sorry about
- 31:44Speaker 1: the three goals you let in the weekend. Thanks, but
- 31:49Speaker 1: I'm sure you'll be knocking on the door of the
- 31:51Speaker 1: first team any day soon, especially with that flying or
- 31:53Speaker 1: Orange is Flying Orange? Amy, Thanks so much and I'll
- 31:58Speaker 1: probably see you one Saturday out the three Heels.
- 32:00Speaker 2: No problem cap of Thanks rock Oh coach is love.
- 32:04Speaker 1: No?
- 32:06Speaker 2: I cannot tell you.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Same From nineteen ninety the shoop shoops are and we share.
- 32:29Speaker 1: And before that we listened to Amy Bumstead telling us
- 32:32Speaker 1: just about everything that goes on at the Folks and
- 32:35Speaker 1: Optimiy's Hockey Club. She's such a knowledgeable lady, you know,
- 32:38Speaker 1: it's great having her in. And the interview did go
- 32:40Speaker 1: on a bit, I must admit, but there was so
- 32:42Speaker 1: much to talk about. So yeah, I hope you enjoyed that.
- 32:45Speaker 1: So we're going to crack on and see if we
- 32:47Speaker 1: can squeeze the rest of the sport in now. Sunday,
- 32:50Speaker 1: I was on the mic at the Folks and Rotary
- 32:52Speaker 1: Half Marathon where six hundred and fifty eight runners successfully
- 32:55Speaker 1: crossed the finishing light. It was a glorious sunny day
- 32:58Speaker 1: with the slight berries which out loads of spectators. This
- 33:02Speaker 1: was the twentieth anniversary of the race, the brainchild of
- 33:05Speaker 1: race director Ray Johnson, and I'm not sure, but there
- 33:09Speaker 1: must have been about fifty children who took part in
- 33:11Speaker 1: the junior race at nine point thirty before the main
- 33:13Speaker 1: race set off at ten. The senior race was the
- 33:16Speaker 1: first little bit was spectator friendly, as the runners passed
- 33:20Speaker 1: the finish line a couple of times along the lees
- 33:23Speaker 1: before heading off down to down the Sandgate hill down
- 33:26Speaker 1: to Hive. Two runners at an early fast paced were
- 33:30Speaker 1: Guitar Zerum from ashvid A c was just the yard
- 33:32Speaker 1: ahead of Toby Smith from Deal tri Club, but they
- 33:35Speaker 1: were both a good way ahead of any other runners,
- 33:38Speaker 1: and this had seemed from the feedback I was getting
- 33:41Speaker 1: from out on the course. Now the crowd eagerly awaited
- 33:44Speaker 1: to see which runner would appear first. At the top
- 33:47Speaker 1: of the lees we saw the lights of the leed
- 33:49Speaker 1: cyclists and it was the yellow vest of Ashvid's Wegaitar
- 33:52Speaker 1: in the lead, having made a break put in a
- 33:54Speaker 1: gap of about a minute between himself and second place Toby,
- 33:58Speaker 1: with local athlete Rakash Guroon coming in third. The first
- 34:03Speaker 1: lady home was unattached to a club. Actually her name
- 34:05Speaker 1: was Alice Tiswell, so not quite sure where she came from.
- 34:08Speaker 1: And we had Guyslingsby was the first boy in the
- 34:11Speaker 1: junior race and Madison Hart was the first girl. Thirty
- 34:16Speaker 1: six folks and running and Athletic Club members entered the
- 34:18Speaker 1: race and the club had a good day. Besides Pracash
- 34:22Speaker 1: coming third, he was first vet forty five and his
- 34:26Speaker 1: wife Amanda was second lady overall and first female Vet
- 34:30Speaker 1: forty with former guests of the show Louisa I claiming
- 34:34Speaker 1: first VET fifty prize. Nineteen South Kent Harriers also ran first.
- 34:39Speaker 1: One home for the club was Andy Gallaher and a
- 34:43Speaker 1: special mention must go to Marie Watson for picking up
- 34:46Speaker 1: the first female Vet fifty five category. It was an
- 34:49Speaker 1: excellent day for the following South Kent Harriers. They all
- 34:52Speaker 1: picked up personal best times. That's John Clayson, Camilla Keller,
- 34:56Speaker 1: Jenny Spillane, Louise Hall, John Sweeney and Sarah Jane Geordan.
- 35:00Speaker 1: And if you're a runner, spare thought for William Miller. Now,
- 35:04Speaker 1: some runners like to aim for a time. Say you
- 35:06Speaker 1: know they want to get put in any particular race,
- 35:08Speaker 1: they might say, oh, I've got to get under one
- 35:10Speaker 1: thirty possibly one forty five, or a nice round figure
- 35:14Speaker 1: of under two hours exactly. Were two South Kent Harriers
- 35:18Speaker 1: were just four seconds apart. John Lennon, yes that's his name.
- 35:23Speaker 1: I think it's Jonathan actually, but I love calling him
- 35:25Speaker 1: in as John Lennon and he loves it too. He
- 35:29Speaker 1: finished the race in one hour fifty nine fifty eight seconds,
- 35:33Speaker 1: but his teammate will Miller was just It was four
- 35:37Speaker 1: seconds behind, so Will was two seconds outside the two
- 35:41Speaker 1: hour barrier two hours and two seconds. I mean, how
- 35:44Speaker 1: frustrating that must be when he thought I could have
- 35:48Speaker 1: picked up two seconds along the race, you know, somewhere
- 35:50Speaker 1: along the course. Race director Ray Johnson seemed very pleased
- 35:54Speaker 1: with the way that they went and a big thank
- 35:56Speaker 1: you to the nice work team for registration and timing.
- 35:59Speaker 1: The police can de's we're once again helping at drink
- 36:01Speaker 1: stations and also on the medal line finishing point. They
- 36:06Speaker 1: had Rotary Club marshals out on the course, but with
- 36:10Speaker 1: two runners being so fast, spare thought for the lead
- 36:13Speaker 1: bikes who had their work cut out staying ahead of
- 36:15Speaker 1: Wegata and Toby and a certain lead cyclist that mister
- 36:19Speaker 1: Dave Daniel has said to me at the end of
- 36:21Speaker 1: the ace, he said, right, that's it, I'm going to
- 36:23Speaker 1: the electric bike for next year's race. He did look
- 36:26Speaker 1: a bit tired. All in all, a great day with
- 36:29Speaker 1: thousands being raised for local charities, and we must just
- 36:32Speaker 1: mention the South Kent Mind team under the guidance of
- 36:35Speaker 1: Joe Tolhurst. That was Juli Gibbs, Maria Felichetti, Trudy Kurd,
- 36:40Speaker 1: Tom Aspinall and Rowan Ellott, who all run a raising
- 36:42Speaker 1: money for the charity. Okay, we're going to turn straight
- 36:45Speaker 1: onto wheelchair basketball now. Saturday, the eleventh of October at
- 36:50Speaker 1: nine point thirty down at the Marsh Academy sees the
- 36:52Speaker 1: start of the season for the folks that Arrow's wheelchair
- 36:55Speaker 1: basketball team. They welcomed the Aces from Aylesbury for their
- 36:59Speaker 1: first fixture. The Arrows now play in the National League
- 37:02Speaker 1: Division two South AFT Division two South and have some
- 37:06Speaker 1: massive away journeys. They've got some mileage to put in.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I'll tell you They've got the opposite fixture where they
- 37:13Speaker 1: travel away to Aylesbury. Then they've got the Southern Sharks
- 37:17Speaker 1: at Portsmouth, the Bears at Birmingham, Storm at Swansea and
- 37:21Speaker 1: the met Archers in Cardiff. So if there's anybody out
- 37:25Speaker 1: there that can help the Arrows in any way, perhaps
- 37:27Speaker 1: a bit of sponsorship, please check out their Facebook page.
- 37:30Speaker 1: And whilst I was doing my research this morning, in fact,
- 37:33Speaker 1: this looks like they might have started a second team
- 37:35Speaker 1: in the National League Division three South. So I'm waiting
- 37:39Speaker 1: to for some more information on this subject from Ben
- 37:42Speaker 1: and Becky Potter. Now last Sunday was an open day
- 37:46Speaker 1: at the Folks and Indoor Bowls Club, which was a
- 37:49Speaker 1: successful event. Linda Hardy from the club told me they
- 37:52Speaker 1: had over forty people come along, of which thirteen had
- 37:56Speaker 1: signed up to be members, with the possibility of even
- 37:59Speaker 1: more potent percentage wise, that's a good day's work. Now,
- 38:03Speaker 1: the outdoor clubs from around the area will soon be
- 38:06Speaker 1: zooming in on the indoor club, which is a marvelous
- 38:09Speaker 1: facility for this town and it attracts young and old.
- 38:12Speaker 1: So if you miss the open day, I'm interested in
- 38:15Speaker 1: taking up the sport of bowls. Please just put Folks
- 38:18Speaker 1: to an Indoor Bowls Club in your search box, or
- 38:20Speaker 1: better still, pop into the Bowls Club. It's just you
- 38:23Speaker 1: know where it is, just in between Morrison's and the
- 38:27Speaker 1: Folks in the Victor Brown. Well, that is about it
- 38:30Speaker 1: from me now, and what we're going to do. We're
- 38:32Speaker 1: going to play a little bit of Kylie Minogue and
- 38:35Speaker 1: I'm going to say goodbye and so let's have a
- 38:38Speaker 1: little listen to Kylie. But that's it for me this week.
- 38:56Speaker 1: No Saturday Sports show this week is Ali and myself
- 39:00Speaker 1: have other commitments which have been planned for ages. However,
- 39:03Speaker 1: join me next Thursday, and if you want to come
- 39:05Speaker 1: into the studio and tell me about your club or
- 39:08Speaker 1: sporting event, just get in touch. Bye for now, online
- 39:13Speaker 1: at Radio Folkston dot com and on your smart speaker
