- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:10This had better be an incredible practical joke.
- 0:15Welcome to What's Your Least Favorite Scary Movie?
- 0:16The podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and
- 0:19the absurd and all of our favorite.
- 0:21And least. Favorite scary movies?
- 0:22Because we believe every horror movie rightfully has this fan
- 0:25base. Even if we don't always get it.
- 0:27My name is Travis and it's Jesse.
- 0:28And welcome to another prom Night special.
- 0:31Yeah, we have another prom themed horror movie lined up for
- 0:34today. This week we're going to be
- 0:36talking about the club. Yeah, we're ready to rock'n'roll
- 0:40for this. That we're ready that much.
- 0:41We watched this movie last night.
- 0:43We told each other that we were not going to talk about it until
- 0:47today. We've been stewing in our
- 0:49thoughts. Over this, yeah, yeah, we have.
- 0:52Yeah. All right.
- 0:54So I don't have anything unless you got announcements.
- 0:58OK, yes, we vaguely remembered we were supposed to do a poll
- 1:01and then we never actually post one.
- 1:03But I did want to read this. This was a nice comment left on
- 1:06our Last Post. Oh yeah, yeah, our last episode
- 1:09from Tristan Canada. This is my favorite podcast.
- 1:12Every Thursday is a good day for me.
- 1:14Oh that was so sweet, man. Yeah, that message is so happy.
- 1:17Happy, yeah. Yeah, it.
- 1:19Just popped up on my phone like right after we flew through a
- 1:24fucking storm to Chicago. Very first flight in my entire
- 1:28life. I'm flying through a goddamn
- 1:30storm. That was not fun.
- 1:32It broke nearly a two week. No vomit streak for me.
- 1:36Yeah, it's just it's a bad time. It's fucking crazy, yeah, but
- 1:39that was a really nice little message.
- 1:41We also had some more zombie shouting out the new letter for
- 1:44the Patreon stickers. I missed that, sorry Lord
- 1:47Zombie, but thank you for the shout out.
- 1:50Yeah, Thanks guys. We really appreciate you guys.
- 1:53You guys are really nice guy, a lot of nice people.
- 1:55Yeah, we we love interacting with you all and here and your
- 1:59all thoughts and takes and everything and.
- 2:02Yeah, sorry if we're not like super responsive and fast so
- 2:05like be on social media all the time cuz it's just been busy.
- 2:09It's been busy, busy, but it's OK because we're here to talk
- 2:12about the club now. The club.
- 2:14Travis. Has gotten.
- 2:16Some background information. From this I've got some.
- 2:19Which is incredible because I can't even, I can't just go to
- 2:22IMDb and search the club. I like to get anything from it.
- 2:27I've been having to go to Kim Coates's profile and Scroll
- 2:31down. Yeah, I.
- 2:31Do search the club and maybe Scroll down like halfway down
- 2:35the page it'll be. There not showing up.
- 2:38I did this like 3 or 4 times. Are you spelling at the curb or
- 2:42are you spelling at the club? I'm.
- 2:44Spelling at the club. OK.
- 2:45And it was getting to the point where I was like, maybe this is
- 2:48one of those movies that, like, most people know it as the club,
- 2:52but it's actually called something.
- 2:54Else, well, we do have an alternate potential name that
- 2:57we're going to be talking about here.
- 2:58In a while, boy. Yeah, it's going to be very
- 3:01relevant. So we're going to get into it.
- 3:04Let's do it. So the club, this movie came
- 3:08out. It premiered in March of 1994.
- 3:12I have 5-4 different. Days 32.
- 3:19I've got a lot of dates for different releases here.
- 3:21So it premiered at the Brussels Fantastic Film International
- 3:26Film Fest in March 1994, had its wide release which was, you
- 3:33know, just straight to video May 4th, 1994, had its German TV
- 3:39premiere on August 29th, 1995, and then it made its Hungry
- 3:43premiere in January 20th, 2007. Really makes her hungry and
- 3:48premiere every night at About. Six.
- 3:50I'm happy for them. Then they were clamoring for the
- 3:52club over there. People have been talking about
- 3:54the club. They had to have it, the people
- 3:56demanded. Happy for them.
- 3:58If you want to watch it right now, you can watch it on Prime
- 4:02to be Fright Night or Fossum. We watched it on Prime because
- 4:06that was the lesser of the ad options for us, but if you don't
- 4:10have Prime there are plenty of free options there, so we
- 4:12recommend that for sure. Written by Robert C Cooper,
- 4:16directed by Britain Spencer, Music by Peter Brenner and Paula
- 4:20Zaza. Special effects make up by Brock
- 4:23Joliff, Francois Desjanais. Fucking Francois Desjanais.
- 4:28Uh huh. That's the saga.
- 4:30Right. Yeah.
- 4:31I know, right? And Robert Sheridan, Wow, isn't
- 4:35this. See, this is the thing about
- 4:37this movie. This movie is such a fucking
- 4:39bizarre like grouping of talent. It is so weird.
- 4:45And it doesn't stop here, because in the cast we have JH
- 4:49Wyman, who plays John Rodman, who was the guy in the last
- 4:54week's movie Prom Night 4 delivers from evil.
- 4:57He is stuck in his own purgatory where he must have an I'll fated
- 5:02prom night in an abandoned. Estate Kim Coates as Mr. Carver,
- 5:08who previously we've talked about on the show as Gucci Mane.
- 5:11Yeah, Detective Gucci Mane in silent.
- 5:13Hill, Andrea Roth as Amy, who you said is the mom and the
- 5:18collector, right? Yep.
- 5:20Reno Romano as Evan. No relation that I know to Ray
- 5:25Romano. It is a cool name, though.
- 5:26It is a cool name. He can maybe like we can play it
- 5:29off for a little bit. That's how he got his foot in
- 5:30the door with this, I'm sure. Zach Ward as Kyle and yes, that
- 5:35is the bully kid from the Christmas Story.
- 5:41Kelly Taylor as Laura and Matthew Ferguson as Darren
- 5:44Spencer all. Right.
- 5:46Time for our favorite game on the show.
- 5:48Budget or budget I don't. Know they got them German and
- 5:55Bulgarian and Hungarian dollars. Yeah, like years later, but they
- 5:59were banking on that like we have to big markets over there.
- 6:04I don't know I'm going to say Bug Ted, but everything about
- 6:08this fucking movie has surprised me so far.
- 6:10I know. Yeah.
- 6:11Well, I well, here's the thing. I don't have any financials for
- 6:14this one, so I don't know they. Automatically chalk up to a bug,
- 6:17Ted. This is absolutely a bug, Ted.
- 6:19If they spend over $10 million on this movie, I feel bad.
- 6:23For those of you just tuning in because you're huge, the club
- 6:25fans budget is for over 10 million and Bug Ted is for under
- 6:3010 million and that just came from a typo we found very
- 6:34endearious on a review. Yeah, it was like back there in
- 6:36the Halloween series. I think that's where that all
- 6:38started. So it was very low bug Ted and
- 6:40we're like that's how low budget it was.
- 6:42They couldn't even. Ted Yeah, yeah.
- 6:44OK, so I do have the IMDb score, may shock you.
- 6:48I don't know how you or where you stand on this, but it's a
- 6:514.4. Yup, it is a 4.4.
- 6:55OK. And I have 3 movies from 1994 to
- 6:59compare it to. Tell me about 1994.
- 7:02I have a theme. The theme is all potential
- 7:05members of the club. Oh, that's a dark theme.
- 7:08Yeah, that's a dark theme, but it's not that bad because we're
- 7:11starting off with Knight of the Demons too, which means the
- 7:14member of the club would be Angela.
- 7:16Angela is definitely a big member of the club.
- 7:19So that release April 15th, 1990.
- 7:21Four 1.3 million budget. Don't have the gross but the
- 7:25IMDb is 5.9. Have not watched that one yet,
- 7:29but I would like to watch it. I want to re watch the remake.
- 7:33Remake was actually surprisingly good.
- 7:35Yeah, I like, I was halfway distracted when we were watching
- 7:38it and I want to, I want to give it like a full like sit down,
- 7:41pay attention, Yeah, kind of watch.
- 7:44OK, movie #2 my sweet Satan. So this is a short film.
- 7:50OK. This is from Jim Van Beeber, who
- 7:53is the director of Dead Beat a Dawn.
- 7:57I have watched this because it is on the Blu-ray that we have
- 8:00over here. It's a pretty cool little short
- 8:03film, but it's about, it's like based off of like a real life
- 8:07killer, call it like the acid killer or something like that.
- 8:09Chris. Yeah.
- 8:10It's about these people that are part of a satanic cult and they
- 8:14murder a guy because they suspect he stole drugs or
- 8:17something like that. So yes, is.
- 8:20Van Bever, OK. No, man, he's not OK.
- 8:24No, he's pretty fucked up but he made some really awesome shit
- 8:28back in the day. Like for real.
- 8:30But this movie especially but that came out.
- 8:32I don't have an exact date but 1994.
- 8:36Don't have the budget, don't have the gross but IMDb 5.9.
- 8:40You know what that tracks for Van Bever?
- 8:42Yeah, and the final movie is a movie called Animal Cloth, and
- 8:47the only reason I have this on here is because it is directed
- 8:50by U Bowl, who I suspect would be a part of the club.
- 8:55Why? He's he's made some terrible,
- 8:58terrible movies and he's also the critic or he's the guy that
- 9:02if you badmouth his movies, he has like challenged critics to
- 9:06fights. Oh, OK.
- 9:08And he's actually fought some. OK yeah.
- 9:11He just doesn't have a good reputation.
- 9:13And he made he's made some pretty shitty movies and.
- 9:15I hope he doesn't try to fight you.
- 9:16Well, I'm here for it. He's like, yeah, I think I could
- 9:19take him like it's like. He's like your first level boss
- 9:24until. Until John Carpenter, this is
- 9:26like punch out right here. Like he's he's Glass Joe.
- 9:29You guys please, please petition Scarefest, have them do whatever
- 9:33they need to do to get John Carpenter here.
- 9:35And you have. Have a ticketed event where
- 9:40Travis fights John Carpenter. This is what it is.
- 9:43This is me, John Carpenter. You bowl table, ladder, chair
- 9:48match. Yeah.
- 9:52No holds barred, baby. Yes.
- 9:55That's right. Every everything's legal.
- 9:59I love it. It's perfect.
- 10:01I will miss you. I.
- 10:03Will die. They will both gang up on me
- 10:06immediately. It's like whenever they like,
- 10:09it's like Logan Paul's in the ring and like they have like the
- 10:11like the people and they're just gang up.
- 10:12On him I was being more like in Mario Kart, when both of you
- 10:16like lose or whatever and like the other computer ones are.
- 10:21Oh yeah. Heart Super Smash Bros Like they
- 10:24can't just keeps going with the computers.
- 10:26You're like, all right, Yeah, yeah.
- 10:29Yeah, OK, so that came out February 3rd, 94500 and no
- 10:36$50,000 DM, whatever currency that is, don't have the gross.
- 10:42IMDb score 2.2. Yeah, look, he has a reputation,
- 10:46Jesse. I didn't bring him on this for
- 10:48no reason. OK, All right, so I have tag
- 10:51lines. The first one in this club.
- 10:55The initiations can be fatal. I mean, I think the whole point
- 10:59is that like, you're either going to die or you're killing
- 11:02someone. I mean, it's like it is fatal.
- 11:04It's not just a can be. And the final one, are you in?
- 11:11Got milk? She's kind of asked.
- 11:19Can I petition that to be our alternate tagline?
- 11:23Yeah, OK. Just whoever you draw in the
- 11:27art, just give them all the moustaches.
- 11:29Wait, what was the thing from Rick and Morty that Jerry said?
- 11:32Like how about them apples or something?
- 11:34Like that I thought it was just got apples.
- 11:37Got apples? How about them apples?
- 11:41Is Google hunting? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know.
- 11:45All right, so it's time for fun facts.
- 11:49Let's see what I could scrounge up for fun facts here all.
- 11:52Right. I'm impressed you found some.
- 11:53Yeah. I am too and this one right here
- 11:55is probably going to be the most interesting.
- 11:58So I don't know if you noticed but in the opening credits this
- 12:03was produced by Peter Simpson who is, oh shit our boy that has
- 12:07produced all the other Prom 9 movies.
- 12:09I wonder if that's how well what's his face crossed over?
- 12:14Yep. Well, see, this was originally
- 12:17supposed to be Prom Night 5, and they decided to not name it Prom
- 12:22Night 5 because they started to think that the Prom Night name
- 12:25didn't quite have the draw that it used to have.
- 12:28Man, if this had been Prom Night 5 I think it would have given
- 12:33Prom night 3 the leg up it needed in my rating.
- 12:36Yeah, yeah, for sure. But, you know, I have my own
- 12:39suspicions. I think that like, they made the
- 12:41movie, it was cut. It was going to be called Prom
- 12:43Night 5. In fact, it was actually called
- 12:45Prom Night 5 in some markets, such as Japan.
- 12:48OK. But I think like Simpson right
- 12:52here, Peter Simpson watched the final cut again and he's like,
- 12:55God damn it, my brother, my wife, my bubby, whatever.
- 13:00What Brock Simpson? It's not in this movie.
- 13:02It can't be a prom night movie. That's true.
- 13:04So they changed the name. That's my theory right there is.
- 13:08It his brother thought it was his son.
- 13:10I don't know, OK, relative. I'm sure.
- 13:15I'm sure they're related some form or fashion.
- 13:18So yeah, other than that, I got something.
- 13:21This is from IMDb so let's take this with a grain of salt, but
- 13:26allegedly Corey Haim was originally cast as John but was
- 13:31fired a few days in the filming. Really.
- 13:35Now That's what that's what they're saying?
- 13:37Maybe that's why they got JH Wyman's.
- 13:40Like he was OK in Prom Night 4, let's just get him back in.
- 13:44We can count on him. I remember watching Prom Night 4
- 13:47and I was like, he's a solid actor.
- 13:49I feel like I should see him in more things.
- 13:51And I checked his IMDb, he didn't have a whole lot going
- 13:53on. Yeah, between this and Prom
- 13:55Night, he's got some decent range.
- 13:56This movie maybe? What would my opinion of him a
- 13:58little bit more just his performance in this movie, but
- 14:01we're going to get in a second. I think it's not him.
- 14:03OK, OK, We'll we'll talk about it.
- 14:07Yeah, and the only other thing I have is it was filmed in Casa
- 14:10Loma, Toronto. Filmed from May 1993 to June
- 14:159th, 1993. There were some very different
- 14:18Canadian accents, so. Oh yeah. 100% of Canadian
- 14:21production. Yeah, for sure.
- 14:23And that's it. That's all that I could find.
- 14:24I tried scouring the Internet for all information and there
- 14:28really isn't anything other than that.
- 14:30OK, so let's get into our talk about it.
- 14:35Our good, bad, ugly and absurd. Jesse, you got to kick it off.
- 14:38What did you like about this one?
- 14:40I like the premise is interesting because we all know
- 14:43I'm a sucker for people being stuck in a single location.
- 14:46Yeah, so that hooked me. I am never mad about a purgatory
- 14:53type movie. You're not mad about prom
- 14:56either? Not mad about prom, especially
- 14:59not mad about a medieval prom. I wish my school was cool enough
- 15:02to do something like that. That was cool.
- 15:04And they had, like, a theme for it, Yeah.
- 15:05People actually dressed up for it, even especially the king and
- 15:08queen. Like good for them.
- 15:10Do you think that they were miffed that they didn't get to
- 15:13do tuxes and like dresses though?
- 15:16I mean, the girls got to do dresses.
- 15:19I know some people, some people still wore like traditional prom
- 15:22clothing and just like did little embellishments.
- 15:25I guess, yeah, you're right, yeah.
- 15:27I just think it's cool and you know, obviously we had some some
- 15:32solid effects for it going on, which makes sense so.
- 15:36Francois Dejaney. Like you said that name and I
- 15:39was like there's there can't be two of them.
- 15:43I, you know, The funny thing is like, I wrote that down and it
- 15:47didn't register, and then I said it out loud.
- 15:48I was like Francois Dejaney. Yeah.
- 15:54What really in this? I like, yeah, they're just,
- 15:57they're such a solid cast in this.
- 15:59It's really kind of unbelievable.
- 16:01So. Yeah, I know there's a lot of
- 16:03talent behind this movie. I looked at like 90% of the
- 16:07guests in this movie are working today.
- 16:09Like they're all pretty good actors.
- 16:13It's. Crazy.
- 16:14I said last night that it was a lot like, Oh my God, I thought,
- 16:18why can't I think of her fucking name from Doom Asylum?
- 16:22Oh, I don't know her name either, but she's also in Sex in
- 16:25the City is. What you said, yeah, like.
- 16:28Kristen something. Kristen, something I can't My
- 16:32brain is just alternating between Ritter and Chenoweth.
- 16:36Kristen Davis, thank you. Yes, OK.
- 16:40OK, that's a relief. Yeah, there is just, there is a
- 16:44lot of unexpected people involved in this and I I think
- 16:47it lends itself well to the stronger points of the movie.
- 16:52OK, So what about you? I like that this movie continues
- 16:57the tradition of questionable adults in bathrooms.
- 17:01Yeah, you know what that makes the original prom night?
- 17:05Yeah, right. I know.
- 17:06See, when you think, when you know that little bit of
- 17:09information, you can start making sense of a lot of things
- 17:12in here. And as soon as I because I went
- 17:14into this movie, he appeared. To be the only chaperone as
- 17:16well. Bad move, that guy sucks.
- 17:20This is why you should do background checks before hiring
- 17:23people. He's the guidance counselor.
- 17:25It's so bad. He is the one that's like
- 17:28supposed to be there when shit goes bad.
- 17:30Yeah, so there is the most recent episode of The
- 17:33Testaments. One of the commanders wives is
- 17:37revealed to have been a counselor in the Before Times.
- 17:39And everybody in the comments is just like conversion therapy
- 17:43counselor. Like 'cause it's just bad, bad,
- 17:47bad, bad, bad vibes. I've not heard of The
- 17:51Testaments. It is a sequel to The Handmaid's
- 17:53Tale. Oh, OK.
- 17:55Yeah, OK. Interesting.
- 17:57Yeah. Yeah, she's also red flags for
- 18:00counselor and I just I feel like they'd.
- 18:02Probably they hit it off. That's not a good thing.
- 18:05Also with the right thing, because that's.
- 18:06Pretty did. She raped too.
- 18:08Well, that's kind of what Gilead has founded on.
- 18:11What the fuck? OK, cool.
- 18:12All right, moving on. All right, We're going to be
- 18:15talking about that pointy in this movie already, and it's not
- 18:17a really fun topic. So yeah, other than that, like
- 18:23some of these people gave some pretty good performances.
- 18:25Like, you know, I think that they did good considering what
- 18:28they had to work with. I will say the effects are
- 18:32pretty solid. Like, you know, nothing like
- 18:34they, they have a lot of fire stunts in this movie, which is
- 18:38cool. And John just getting linked up
- 18:42and down in the halls constantly, that probably was
- 18:45fun. That was fun.
- 18:47It happened a little too slow for me.
- 18:49It kind of got goofy looking whenever like, 'cause it like
- 18:53The thing is like you do it one time, OK, but then like
- 18:56immediately after he's like, Oh no, I'm going again.
- 18:58It's just like, and he's like going so slow and it's just
- 19:01like, all right, man. Now the I think the illusion is.
- 19:05Too used to try like people running.
- 19:08Maybe, maybe I'm looking for it now.
- 19:11I am looking for it in places. I was looking for it in the
- 19:13airport on the little like he. Was the moving sidewalks.
- 19:16He was like, I want to see people looking like Twilight.
- 19:18They did. That's about it.
- 19:20OK, all right. What'd you not like?
- 19:25OK, we say on the show all the time that every movie has its
- 19:28audience, and I'm sure that this movie has its audience.
- 19:30It does. And if you like this movie, this
- 19:33is not a personal critique of you or your tastes.
- 19:36This is a movie that's just not for me.
- 19:40Part of it to me is that it comes across kind, like I don't
- 19:44know what message is trying to send, but it comes across as
- 19:47kind of victim blamey and an empathetic.
- 19:51Yeah, it's kind of all go like that.
- 19:53Because you know the whole thing, like, oh, if you're being
- 19:56raped and you don't fight your attacker, you deserve to go to
- 19:59hell. What the fuck is?
- 20:00That that is weird, yeah. And I've never liked the whole
- 20:04rhetoric that if you kill yourself you're going to hell.
- 20:06Like that's just scaring people to stay alive and not deal with
- 20:10with their problems. Like you should have a more
- 20:12empathetic approach to somebody who's having suicidal ideation.
- 20:16It just I'm not in a good headspace to talk about this in
- 20:21the, like depth it needs to be. Yeah, talked.
- 20:25But I just I had a lot of problems with the way this may
- 20:27be framed, some very serious subjects.
- 20:30Yeah, it's a little bit. It's some really heavy topics.
- 20:33Some really heavy topics. It doesn't take them.
- 20:37Like I said, it doesn't take seriously in the right way.
- 20:42The tone is kind of all over the place, and that just fucking
- 20:45ends. Yeah, the ending is so confusing
- 20:47to me. I, I looked it up and I was
- 20:49going to like go over this whenever we I guess talk about
- 20:53it, but like I'm if we need to consult the Internet to try and
- 20:59figure out what the fuck is happening in this movie, I'm
- 21:01ready to dive in there and do so.
- 21:03I already did that for the ending.
- 21:04That way I could have an understanding of what happened
- 21:06because I was so confused. Yeah, to me, it just seemed like
- 21:09we we jumped back in time and he's decided that even though
- 21:13most of them faced their fears in the purgatory or whatever,
- 21:16like, oh, bad things are still going to happen to I just.
- 21:19It seems like, see The thing is maybe we should save this for
- 21:24later. Or maybe not.
- 21:25I mean this is like a spoiler. Yeah, we're we're in a spoiler
- 21:29point. Yeah.
- 21:30Like the way that I read it was that they returned back without
- 21:37any recollection of what happened.
- 21:40So I don't understand how and like the events kind of play out
- 21:44like they were going to play out.
- 21:45And The thing is, I don't understand why they did that in
- 21:49the 1st place if they weren't going to recall any of that or
- 21:52have any growth from the experience and.
- 21:56That was actually like a major point at the end of The Good
- 21:59Place. What are you saying more than
- 22:01that for people who don't want? Spoilers, I know what you're
- 22:04talking about, but like they but they they do have change yeah,
- 22:07they in that show they tweaked. That they tweaked that a little
- 22:10bit. That was one of the things that
- 22:12they discussed when they were trying to figure their thing
- 22:13out. But in this right here, it's
- 22:14just like it meant nothing. Yeah.
- 22:16So why even happen in the first place?
- 22:22But yeah, OK. Do you have anything else bad to
- 22:24talk about? At points it felt like it was
- 22:27being trippy just for trippiness sake.
- 22:30Yeah. Like it didn't feel like it was
- 22:32adding anything to the movie except for maybe runtime.
- 22:35Add some weird what I like I remember like the shots like the
- 22:41IT felt very 90s where like, you know that moment where he is
- 22:45like turning into the judge. He's like giving them a
- 22:47presentation and like the cameras all warped and stuff
- 22:49like that. That's like something that you
- 22:50would see on like a commercial growing up or on like Nick or
- 22:54something like that. Movie at times felt like a cross
- 22:57between Pink Floyd's The Wall and a Jim Carrey movie.
- 23:01Yeah, dude, I had Jim Carrey written down in here too.
- 23:04Like that's actually one of my absurd things.
- 23:07So we'll get to that here in a moment, OK?
- 23:11You got anything else? That's that's it.
- 23:13OK, the very shallow version of it.
- 23:18OK, so for me, my thing is it was very confusing.
- 23:24So it starts off and then shit happens and then there's a lot
- 23:28of wandering around and then no idea what's happening.
- 23:33And I had no, I got was lost for like a major part of it.
- 23:37And The thing is, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
- 23:41Like I don't have to have everything spelled out for me
- 23:44right out the gate, but it was just boring throughout the
- 23:49entire thing. It's them just wandering these
- 23:51empty halls and like they're running into alternate versions
- 23:55of themselves. And then like, it's just there's
- 23:58a lot happening and I'm just not really grasping any structure
- 24:03from what was happening here. And I don't know if that was the
- 24:05intention or not, but I, I was just so lost.
- 24:10But the thing that just got me the most is that it was just so
- 24:13water meandering and it was just boring.
- 24:15Like whenever they were doing that.
- 24:17Like there are interesting moments in the movie.
- 24:20Like, we do have some good moments, but it's just it's so
- 24:24few and far between. To make a rare Family Guy
- 24:26reference for me, walking up the stairs and walking down the
- 24:30stairs and walking up the sideways stairs.
- 24:33Yep, it's a lot of that. It is a lot of that in this
- 24:36movie right here. I mean, but I mean more or less,
- 24:39that's basically it. So I didn't think that that dude
- 24:44did like a good performance that that plays John in this, right.
- 24:48Here I think he was working with what he was given.
- 24:51OK, you already kind of brought it, so this is like a little
- 24:53preview into my absurd. But basically, like I said, he's
- 24:56a cross between Ace Ventura and Freddy.
- 24:59Yeah, and that's how he played it.
- 25:01He played it kind of like Ace Ventura but also doing like
- 25:04Freddy Krueger type stuff. Yes.
- 25:07He can't pull off that performance.
- 25:10I think he needed to go a different route with that
- 25:12character. I it feels like one of those it.
- 25:16I don't want to make any assumptions, but it feels like
- 25:19it was director guided. It could have been, yeah, I
- 25:23looked up the the director and he's done some things like he
- 25:27was a he was mostly like camera operator stuff like I'm like
- 25:30Rambo and a lot of like classic movies and stuff like that.
- 25:35But this may have been his like first chance to actually direct
- 25:38something, so I. Don't know.
- 25:40And I'm not saying that like, necessarily like that.
- 25:43I think the director 100% did it.
- 25:45It could be a cross between things and it could just be like
- 25:49swinging a miss. I'm not calling it good or bad
- 25:53either way. I'm just saying like there's
- 25:56multiple people involved just making the movie and we've seen
- 25:59him. We've seen him act in other
- 26:01things, so we know that he's got Yeah.
- 26:03He was good and prominent for it for sure.
- 26:05I liked him in that. So maybe this isn't his
- 26:07wheelhouse, or maybe it was just a different kind of environment
- 26:10like we could be. We don't know.
- 26:12Yeah, I guess that's true. All right, let's go to ugly.
- 26:14The rape and the domestic violence.
- 26:16Yeah. I mean, that's pretty much
- 26:18that'll cover it right there. Like it's just, it's just, it's
- 26:23a lot. It's just a lot.
- 26:25Yeah, like having one of the main motivators in this movie
- 26:31being the fact that the guidance counselor is about to rape one
- 26:34of the students. Apparently he does this a lot.
- 26:36He's got a lot of victims under his belt.
- 26:38Yeah, it's, it's fucked up. Also we're fucking daring,
- 26:45struggling with stuff and. You feel bad for him and he's
- 26:49not handling in a great way, but at the same.
- 26:51Time fucked off halfway through the movie like we don't like.
- 26:54There's no resolution to his character.
- 26:57He just dies, he just joins the club.
- 26:59And it's so like, and we don't get like, that's such a heavy
- 27:02thing and we don't get any recognition of that.
- 27:04We have somebody die at the hands of her boyfriend.
- 27:09We don't get any real resolution to that because the movie just
- 27:12ends with Amy about to get raped.
- 27:17And I'm sorry, this is like, I know we've already said several
- 27:21things now, but huge fucking trigger warning for because
- 27:24we're not going to be able to not talk about it because these
- 27:28are like cornerstones of the film.
- 27:31Yeah, it is. Yeah.
- 27:32I'll try to remember to put a big fucking.
- 27:34Content warning. Into show notes.
- 27:37Yeah, for sure. Yeah.
- 27:39It's not one I really anticipated for this.
- 27:41Year. Yeah.
- 27:42No, I read the description and I was like, this sounds like it's
- 27:46gonna be a fun little prom movie.
- 27:48Yeah, I know, right? Yeah, nerp.
- 27:52And like. Also.
- 27:54Why did everybody just know Mr. Carver was going to assault Amy?
- 28:01Like why was that? Like it's implied that Evan knew
- 28:04and he was nervous about it. It's implied that Amy has had
- 28:07nightmares about him. Like did they actually do a
- 28:11background check and just said fuck it we'll hire him anyway?
- 28:14I don't understand. Again, once you know that this
- 28:18is a potential prom night movie, something's going to fall into
- 28:22place. Hamilton High.
- 28:24Do we know that? Yes, there's a banner at the
- 28:27beginning that says Eastern High Prom.
- 28:29Maybe they changed the name man, I'm sure that's what happened.
- 28:36Fucking Jeremy Ironside cultivated terrible culture.
- 28:42I mean why are just. I mean either way, like the
- 28:45culture still exists there because we got a fucking
- 28:46guidance counselor drunk talking about having sex with a student
- 28:51in the bathroom to a student. It's so bad.
- 28:54Yeah, which Speaking of that, I'm just going to go and jump
- 28:57into my first. Absurd.
- 28:58Which is wait. Did you even do your ugly?
- 29:01I haven't. Done an I just join with you.
- 29:03I mean, that's like that's that's the ugly in this movie
- 29:06right here. But.
- 29:08Can I have my absurd then? OK, sure.
- 29:11Wall triangles wall. Triangles are.
- 29:14Still deadly even outside of the Halloween universe.
- 29:18Michael Myers, part of the club, yeah.
- 29:21Yeah, well, we done knew that. Yeah, yeah, Wall spikes, Jesse
- 29:26talked about. We need to get some of those
- 29:28installed in this house. I just think they'd be a good
- 29:32defense mechanism. We've seen them be incredibly
- 29:35effective in movies. I mean, they have like a pretty
- 29:39high success rate. Yeah.
- 29:42Like Michael Myers used them, this guy used them.
- 29:46It's a low sample size, but it's one.
- 29:48For one on good guy versus bad guy too.
- 29:51So yeah, you're right. Yeah.
- 29:52I mean, odds are, oh, actually, OK, ish.
- 29:56If a killer, if two killers come in, we'll get one of them,
- 30:01they'll get one of us. The other two remaining will
- 30:04truce it out. I mean, it's a winning formula.
- 30:08I I don't think you can go wrong with that.
- 30:09There's. No argument.
- 30:11There there isn't. No, it's done these Sue movies.
- 30:14Heck. We need to write like a fucking
- 30:16thesis on it and cite these sue movies right there and.
- 30:20We've been like honorary doctorates.
- 30:22Yeah, probably from like Harvard.
- 30:24Probably totally. OK.
- 30:29You got anything else? No.
- 30:31All right, so. My brain's already broken.
- 30:33We only started. Back to the bathroom, right out
- 30:39the gate we have Carver coming out of the stall and Evan goes
- 30:42over there to pee and he walks up behind him and puts his hand
- 30:46on the shoulder while he's in mid pee.
- 30:49Big fucking no. No power move, No, not even.
- 30:54That's just weird. Can I bring up another absurd,
- 30:59now that you're mentioning it, yeah.
- 31:01Why is he getting drunk in the bathroom stall if he's just
- 31:03going to come out and start offering drinks to students?
- 31:07Because he didn't think about it until he got drunk.
- 31:09Like it was a bad idea until he got drunk.
- 31:11He's like, you know what? Good idea.
- 31:13Fairpoint, that is how alcohol works.
- 31:15Yeah, let's see. Yeah, I guess the other one was
- 31:20just Ace Ventura meets Freddy Krueger.
- 31:22I mean, that's all I have right there.
- 31:24But really, this whole movie is just so fucking weird.
- 31:26I wish I wish I could have found a copy of the wall for you to
- 31:29watch before this because I know we briefly talked about it and
- 31:33you would understand the references.
- 31:35That no, we can watch it. There's ways we can watch it.
- 31:38Yeah, yeah, I need to watch it, though.
- 31:41I if it's The thing is, if you're saying that it's kind of
- 31:44if this reminds you of that movie, I don't know if I want to
- 31:47watch it. I mean, no, it's just there are
- 31:53like things reminiscent of it. OK, you know there, I mean, this
- 31:58movie has a lot of like things that I would say like like a lot
- 32:03of movies that I like. There are a lot of things in
- 32:06there. Yeah, there are a lot of things
- 32:07in this movie that we should be going.
- 32:09This is a great movie to where it's not for the lack of Brock
- 32:14Simpson. We would be happy to have you
- 32:16have it in the Prom Night universe.
- 32:18I'm not going to lie, I think he would have maybe bumped it.
- 32:20Probably would have. No.
- 32:23OK, well, let's rate it then. What do you got?
- 32:273 1/2 I just don't like this movie.
- 32:30It's not for me and I'm not judging anybody who likes it.
- 32:35I just didn't have a good time. That's totally fine man.
- 32:37In my head, I've been a three the entire time.
- 32:39OK. So yeah. 3.25 starting every.
- 32:42It's rare that we go well on the show, yeah, but you know, like,
- 32:45sometimes it happens. Sometimes it happens.
- 32:47And it's totally cool if you like it.
- 32:49We're not going to shoot on it for the sake of shitting on
- 32:51that. Like we're going to talk about
- 32:52some good stuff that we like. People shit on plenty of movies
- 32:54that I love and it's fine. I understand what my taste is.
- 32:59Yeah, all. Right, so let's get into it.
- 33:02Starts off limos at a castle on a stormy night.
- 33:05See, that's poetic it. This should have been a great
- 33:07movie. Yeah, right.
- 33:09Then we cut to a banner that says Eastern High Prom 1993.
- 33:14You're missing the big X on there.
- 33:16Blow it in tiny handwriting is Hamilton.
- 33:22We see. Can you imagine?
- 33:24No, no, no, hold on a second. If this wait, no, this is a
- 33:27different night. I was thinking like if this is
- 33:28part of like the prom night. Like you know how in the last
- 33:31prom night opening we had oh shit, I dropped my phone.
- 33:35Those spiked really loud on our. Sorry to get in, the cats are
- 33:42now howling at us. OK, sorry that sounds.
- 33:45Like Charlie and Frank's apartment right now.
- 33:48It does. OK.
- 33:50No, no, OK. We were talking about the
- 33:54opening of the last movie. Oh my God, the cats are now
- 33:57fighting. How crazy it was that night.
- 34:02Yeah. It was in the 50s.
- 34:04Mary. Lou, Yeah, yeah, For a second
- 34:06there I was thinking that this is the same night, but no, this
- 34:09is 93, This is 93 when this is all happening.
- 34:11It would be fun if it was the same night as the.
- 34:15Cuz you would have very Lou, fucking Father Jonas, and
- 34:20fucking Carver. Yeah, going all at once.
- 34:23Just crazy. Carver matriculated at Hamilton
- 34:25High. Graduated there.
- 34:28Yeah. Yeah, there we go.
- 34:32All right. Yeah.
- 34:33OK. That, that'll, that'll do it for
- 34:36me. OK, I think.
- 34:38So hard my stomach hurts. OK, so we have one couple in
- 34:42love. This is Evan and Amy.
- 34:43Yes, they're talking about this is the night they're gonna do
- 34:45it. Yeah, we have one girl, Laura.
- 34:49She is talking to John about leaving her boyfriend, but he's
- 34:52violent. And this is another knit I have
- 34:55to pick because there's a reason that people get stuck in abusive
- 35:02relationships. Because by the time you realize
- 35:05that it's abusive and you have to leave, you've been isolated.
- 35:09You've been had like your resources taken away and your
- 35:13very life is at stake. And that's what fucking ends up
- 35:17happening to Laura in this movie.
- 35:18She gets she works up the courage to leave him and she
- 35:23gets pushed over a God damn rail in a stone castle.
- 35:26And look, I'm not defending this guy at all, but he's also going
- 35:29through his own shit. This dude, like recently lost, I
- 35:32think his father is what they said.
- 35:34And he's having a hard time dealing with it.
- 35:36And apparently one of the issues between the two of them is that
- 35:39he can't get it up, which is like a big wedge between the two
- 35:43of them. Yes, he's got emotional things
- 35:45happening. Not defending him.
- 35:48Cool motive of still murder. No, I'm not to quote Brooklyn
- 35:5199. Not defending him, I'm just
- 35:53saying it just sucks because it seems like, and it's not a good
- 35:57scenario whatsoever because he's going to.
- 35:59Because I mean, yeah, he had trauma and he has a lot of shit
- 36:02going on that doesn't give him an excuse to act the way that he
- 36:04does sorts here. Like he still needs to be in
- 36:06control of himself. I do feel bad for him that he's
- 36:09not getting support. Yes, that's where I'm getting.
- 36:12Those are fair points to make. Yes, absolutely.
- 36:14Yeah, two things can be true at once.
- 36:16Yeah. And I mean.
- 36:17Truly, she is the victim here though.
- 36:18Like, yeah, because yeah, she's about to die.
- 36:21And then John. Is also talking to Darren
- 36:23Spencer and he's like, yeah you're ugly.
- 36:25Anyway, he didn't say it quite like that, but basically like
- 36:29that. And because we didn't get
- 36:30Darren's name until about 5 minutes before he dies, I just
- 36:33wrote him as ugly kid in my notes the whole way.
- 36:36I yeah, it was weird. The young Frankie Cheeks.
- 36:40Because that's what his voice, Oh my God, he was.
- 36:42Like Frankie Cheeks. So you even had, like, the hat?
- 36:44Kind of. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:46Just a lot more hair like we have this one.
- 36:48Dude, it's, it's Carver. He's watching from behind like
- 36:51one of the columns at the prom. He's just, he couldn't be any
- 36:54more. Of a stereotypical villain if he
- 36:58tried. He's so fucking creepy, but he's
- 37:00just. Watching Amy and Evan goes to
- 37:04the bathroom. Meanwhile, Kyle and Laura have
- 37:08snuck off to go to a bedroom to start making out.
- 37:12So we're in the bathroom and Evan's going over for pee and
- 37:17oh, what's his face here? Carver comes over, puts sand on
- 37:20his shoulder, and talks about how good of a fuck he thinks
- 37:23Sammy would be. It's gross.
- 37:24Can I break up the? Grossness with a joke you
- 37:26reminded me of. Sure, How do you catch a unique
- 37:30rabbit? How unique up?
- 37:33On it. Unique up on it.
- 37:35How do you catch a tame rabbit? You tame tame way.
- 37:40How do you? Catch a unique.
- 37:42Polar bear how? You cut a hole.
- 37:46In the ice and then you put some peas next to the hole in the ice
- 37:50and when the polar bear goes to take a pee you kick it in the
- 37:52ice hole. What the fuck?
- 37:57This scene reminded you of this. No, the way you say he goes to.
- 38:00Take a pee, OK? Like this guy, this creepy guy
- 38:06goes over there and talks to this guy's like about his
- 38:08girlfriend. He's like, Oh my God, this
- 38:09reminds me of this. I need to find a way to.
- 38:11Have fun. I'm talking about this.
- 38:13OK? Yeah.
- 38:15Fair enough. Fair enough.
- 38:17Yeah. I mean, he weirds Evan out.
- 38:19Yeah, he should. Evan, Kind of.
- 38:22Goes away, but John's also in the bathroom and he's like yeah,
- 38:26kind of know what you do there. I know your whole deal.
- 38:29You're going to go try and rape her like you've done with all
- 38:32the other people. Seven other sexual.
- 38:34Assaults and four murders, yeah, it's like.
- 38:38Holy shit. Yeah.
- 38:39And at first I thought we. Were going to have like a cool
- 38:41vigilante movie and I was like, yeah, but.
- 38:44Like. Carver stomps the.
- 38:47Shit out of him, Yeah, he. Beats the absolute fuck out of
- 38:51him. He's like making 5.
- 38:52Murders and then. That would have been so.
- 39:05Badass. If he did that, he's just like,
- 39:07make it 5. It's just just fucking curves,
- 39:11Thompson. I mean, that's what happens
- 39:14here. OK, look, that's around.
- 39:18This bathroom is all porcelain and ancient stone.
- 39:23John's ghost body doesn't stand a chance against it.
- 39:26And I'm not going to dig into the metaphysics of this because
- 39:29my brain can't handle that conversation right now.
- 39:32Yeah, you just killed a. Ghost, How do you do that?
- 39:36Rage. And alcohol.
- 39:38You got so drunk. He stomped the shit out of a
- 39:41ghost man. Holy shit, that's.
- 39:44So fucking drunk. Oh shit.
- 39:49I'm ghost stomp and drunk. Yeah, holy shit.
- 39:53I'm so drunk I can stomp a ghost.
- 39:57Oh man, I'm kind of glad I chose this man, you know?
- 40:05OK. Midnight strikes.
- 40:09And all of the windows endure slam because it's a spooky
- 40:12place. And apparently, no, none of the
- 40:14other 300 people here are at risk of going to hell.
- 40:17Just, you know, the potential rape victim, the domestic
- 40:20violent victim, the child who lost his dad and his impotent
- 40:24and is now turning into a murderer.
- 40:26Why is Evan part of? This.
- 40:29Why? What's his thing?
- 40:30Because he's not killing Carver. Yeah, pretty much I get.
- 40:33OK. The not white.
- 40:35Knight. Yeah, I guess.
- 40:37And. The child.
- 40:39Who is suicidal? But his guidance counselor is
- 40:42too busy planning his assault of another student to help him deal
- 40:46with his depression. Jesus Christ, this is some of
- 40:50these people. I understand why they're there,
- 40:53most of them. Well, I guess he is a minion of
- 40:58hell yeah. You know you like.
- 41:00It's kind of like, it's like he's got to have.
- 41:02Plausible deniability. He's like, OK, clearly we're not
- 41:05like we'll pull the Ravens and murder.
- 41:06It's like cabin in the. Ways and I get the end she's
- 41:09like we do it while we can like, you know we take what we can get
- 41:12here Yeah. All right.
- 41:14There's a like, there's a lot of virgins in this cast, though, in
- 41:18this movie. What?
- 41:19Like. This Castor.
- 41:21In the like the the characters this cast of.
- 41:24Characters I know those actors didn't.
- 41:26Fuck yeah, yeah, cuz. Like Amy and Evan haven't done
- 41:32it yet. Prom night was going to be their
- 41:33special night. Yeah, Kyle and Laura, I think
- 41:36that they may have at 1:00. Point.
- 41:39I don't know, I don't know. It's hard to say it's.
- 41:41Hard to say they've tried, I feel.
- 41:42Like Darren hasn't. Cuz he's got kind of the whole
- 41:45Darren hasn't. I can definitely say Darren has
- 41:50not. I'm just saying for like a
- 41:56horror. Movie, it is refreshing to not
- 41:58have all of the same tropes yeah and John, he's like.
- 42:01Yeah, my day is from another school.
- 42:04Yeah. You don't know her?
- 42:05Yeah. Lisa Resnick.
- 42:07Yeah, she doesn't even come up in this movie, does she?
- 42:10I don't. Think so?
- 42:12No, like I thought that that would have.
- 42:13Been like a player at some point he's just being ghostly and.
- 42:16Running around? Yeah, I guess so.
- 42:18This it gets really. Fucking trippy right here.
- 42:21So Kyle's chasing Laura and is opening different doors trying
- 42:25to find her and at one point he opens the door on himself
- 42:29getting a. Demon blowjob from demon Laura
- 42:34and he just kind of like turns and like gives like a slow
- 42:37motion look. It's like, do you mind?
- 42:39I no I got. More of you remember what you
- 42:42want you want. In yeah, no, like a new year.
- 42:45New You like nodder? Yeah.
- 42:47Like, how am I supposed to know that a nod means that you join?
- 42:51You just know dudes. Like it's not.
- 42:54Weird if it's yourself, yeah. You know, like.
- 42:57I could. He's like I.
- 42:58Could only do with Mel. On Mel it maybe.
- 43:00If it's me on me, yeah. I'd fuck me.
- 43:06So that's. What's happening with him?
- 43:09Everybody else is gone. Mr. Carver grabs Amy and goes
- 43:13running, but Evan runs in after them and they kind of like,
- 43:17fight, but then Evan winds up in some water.
- 43:22Yeah. He busts up the fire, but Carver
- 43:26beats him and runs off, chasing the chain.
- 43:29Yeah, then we OK, then we cut to the ugly kid.
- 43:34Yeah, Darren. Darren, he finds a room with,
- 43:36like, skeletons and a guillotine, and then he looks in
- 43:39the reflection, and then his reflection is all spooky.
- 43:41Yeah, spooky reflection. So Evan runs to the.
- 43:45House and he is looking for Amy and then he finds her on the
- 43:49other side of a door she's being dragged away by a hooded person
- 43:56we then cut over to Wara who is hiding in a stall because she's
- 44:00been running from Kyle see the. Darren seeing himself in the
- 44:04mirror kind of made me think of that.
- 44:05What the fuck? Oh, it's from the wall.
- 44:07From the wall, yeah. Oh, that is.
- 44:08Creepy what? The fuck?
- 44:10I don't like that it's not exactly the same face.
- 44:12But that's what it immediately evoked in me.
- 44:16OK, so where's hiding in this bathroom song?
- 44:18Hiding from Kyle, I guess like the version that Kyle found is
- 44:23not, I don't know. They're they're just like
- 44:24finding different versions of themselves all throughout.
- 44:26This is what's so confusing about this.
- 44:28Here's The thing. Is that like.
- 44:29And we've done we've we've covered multiple purgatory
- 44:32movies on this show. And sometimes we've gotten a
- 44:35little bit of guidance on how these things are, you know, how
- 44:38to interpret them, what the intended interpretation was.
- 44:41This is not clear at all. Yeah, that's the thing.
- 44:43Like. I'm cool with this type of
- 44:44story. It's just so confusing.
- 44:47Yeah. It's hard to tell what is what
- 44:49in this moment. And if the.
- 44:50And that's the thing, if they're wanting us to be confused and
- 44:53like it, be immersive in that way, I guess it's working.
- 44:56But at the same time, I'm lost and I don't.
- 44:59I mean, it's making me naughty invested.
- 45:02That's what's happening. Yeah.
- 45:03OK, so she sees a reflection of her face and it's all banged up
- 45:08and swollen. Yeah, clearly.
- 45:11Her future is seeing Beats being beaten.
- 45:15Up, so she runs. Out Evan finds Amy and John
- 45:19finds them both and so does Darren.
- 45:21Darren runs in and then Laura runs in followed by Kyle.
- 45:25Darren says that all the phones are giving a busy signal and
- 45:28Laura says we'll have you tried 911 and Darren says all the
- 45:31phones are giving a busy signal. And then Amy says I'm going to
- 45:34call my parents and Darren says God damn it, all of the phones
- 45:39are giving a busy signal. You know what?
- 45:43You're right, Darren's. Definitely virgin.
- 45:44Yes, exactly. So they go to what I call the
- 45:49dance hall, the big dance area where everybody was, and it's
- 45:52all empty. So they're like, OK, like this
- 45:54is weird. Nobody like they couldn't all be
- 45:57gone. This now.
- 45:59Now we're getting. Langoliers, this is kind.
- 46:01Of Lingle. Weird we never watched Twangle.
- 46:03Weird. God damn it, we got to watch
- 46:05Wangle. Weird.
- 46:06OK, sorry, that's a mental thing between the two of us that we
- 46:08have to do. No, I mean we posted.
- 46:10About it our our pre flight slash pre Hawaii movie list on
- 46:16the plane, Travis said why did we not watch Lingle Weirds in
- 46:19preparation for this? And I said, oh 'cause we're
- 46:22fucking stupid. Obviously now we got to watch
- 46:24Twangle Weirds. Watch like God damn it, God damn
- 46:26it. Let's see They they.
- 46:27The doors are lost, Yeah. And they they want to look
- 46:31around. And then John says, I think we
- 46:34should split up. And everybody's like, no,
- 46:35absolutely not. That's the worst idea.
- 46:37And John goes, we're on an adventure.
- 46:40When will anything like this ever happen again?
- 46:42I'm surely not a demon leading you to your dudes.
- 46:46I know he's way too into this. Whole thing for it to not be
- 46:49suspicious. Yeah.
- 46:50Like we don't even know. You, you don't even go here and
- 46:54they're so easily. Swayed they're like, you know
- 46:55what, he's got a point. I like split up Evans like, but
- 47:00we'll keep the groups as. Big as possible.
- 47:03Oh, you mean like one big group like you were fighting for
- 47:05before Evan? Like how about?
- 47:07Darren or not Darren, John, you go split up and then group,
- 47:13Yeah. But no, they split in.
- 47:15Groups of three. We have Darren, Laura and Amy,
- 47:17and then we have John, Evan and Kyle, Kyle and Evan.
- 47:23Are both very unsure of John and they realize that their watches
- 47:27are sought and that's important because apparently they decided
- 47:29they'd meet back in the dance hall in an hour so not sure how
- 47:33that's going to happen John says it doesn't matter anyway, we'll
- 47:36know why meanwhile we have. The other three who have found a
- 47:40room full of books. All the books have the same
- 47:42title and there's like we got to read each and every one of these
- 47:45books and Amy says. But they all have the same
- 47:48title, and Jane's like, yeah, but they're clearly different
- 47:50volumes. Well, is that clear?
- 47:53If the spines all just say the same thing?
- 47:55That's not clear. It's not clear.
- 47:57Conversion John is. Opening doors because Kyle
- 48:01refuses to open doors because clearly the problem is doors for
- 48:05him. He is just.
- 48:07Afraid of opening doors? That tracks.
- 48:09With another movie that we've. Watched, we cut back.
- 48:12John decides that he's gonna be a funny guy and pretend he's
- 48:14being attacked, but of course it's just a break.
- 48:17The little imp. Yeah, where he like opens up
- 48:19the. Door and freaks out and then
- 48:22yeah. Also, we missed a part where
- 48:24they switched to spider. And did you miss that?
- 48:27I did, yeah. Laura squished a spider that was
- 48:31on Amy's shoulder and it, like, splattered all over her face.
- 48:36Gross. Yeah, it was fucking gross.
- 48:38Chocolate up in my ugly Sue. There we go.
- 48:40We come back to the. Library and they see John is in
- 48:43this old book, like a yearbook type of thing.
- 48:46He died in 1983. Ten years ago, we cut back to
- 48:52the boys and John is yanked down the hall once.
- 48:56That's pretty dramatic. They run after him, he gets
- 48:58yanked the other way, and they follow him into a room where he
- 49:02gets Super Mario 64 shark screen face.
- 49:06His face is just morphing. For no reason.
- 49:08Who is this for? Because they can't see what's he
- 49:13doing? Why is he doing this?
- 49:15Evan and Kyle. Decide that they don't owe John
- 49:18a goddamn thing. So they decide they're going to
- 49:20go look for the guy. He's probably he sounds.
- 49:22Weird Laura. Goes to run, runs to warn the
- 49:28others about John and Amy. Runs after Laura because she's
- 49:31nervous about Laura, like Laura being by herself.
- 49:35And Darren says what about me? And then Darren is taunted by
- 49:40Darren. Yeah, Darren.
- 49:42Darren. Yeah, he.
- 49:45Is like giving himself shit because he's like, what
- 49:47happened? I thought we were gonna like,
- 49:49show them, you know, this makes me sad.
- 49:52This makes me think of the episode of Buffy where she can
- 49:56hear everybody's thoughts and she finds Jonathan and the
- 49:59watched The Watershower. Yeah.
- 50:03I thought the same thing was going to happen.
- 50:04Yeah, except nobody comes to help.
- 50:07Darren no, like he's like, you can't.
- 50:09Lie or hide from yourself. So he like gets him bound up on
- 50:13one of the boards there and he starts like cutting himself.
- 50:18So when this is like demon version of himself cuts himself,
- 50:21it cuts Darren. Like the real Darren too, he
- 50:24disembows. Him.
- 50:25He strangles him. He shoots his foot and then he
- 50:30says, but really what you ought to do is decapitation.
- 50:33And so he points over to guillotine and John appears.
- 50:37He goes fucking. Of course he does.
- 50:38And this is where you learn that suicide is how you get in the
- 50:41club. It's not just suicide, though.
- 50:44It's also murder and being murdered and being assaulted.
- 50:51Apparently. It's very unclear what doesn't
- 50:55count as membership to the club. Yeah, it sounds like it's a
- 50:57pretty like. Accepting club, like it's not
- 51:01very exclusive. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:03Like basically you just can't. Die of natural causes, it sounds
- 51:06like. Pretty much, yeah.
- 51:07And he, he dies and he is the only one out of all of them that
- 51:12gets, like, put in the book. Yeah, because his picture goes
- 51:14in there, too. Yep.
- 51:16It's weird. Yeah.
- 51:17We. We.
- 51:18That's it. It just it.
- 51:22Oh my God that was so loud. She has thoughts.
- 51:29I think you guys better be talking nice about my favorite
- 51:31movie. I hope you guys can hear our
- 51:36cat. Yeah.
- 51:37Otherwise as good as I'm. That is Zoey Such.
- 51:40An enunciated meow. My goodness, guys.
- 51:43OK. So you have you been going to?
- 51:45Elocution last time hold on one second I'm gonna pause so I'm.
- 51:48Gonna need to check on her so. Our cats are OK, by the way.
- 51:51Everything's cool. They're just.
- 51:53They're just hungry. Yeah, they're early, will be
- 51:55done by the time it's their dinner time.
- 51:57Yeah, it might get. Louder now, though, because.
- 52:00Travis poked his head out. And they think it's working.
- 52:02It's fine. I hope you, I hope.
- 52:03You like our cats? OK, so we see Kyle.
- 52:06Gets X through your door. Yep, and we see another Kyle
- 52:08find Laura. I don't understand, I wrote
- 52:10like. Kyle gets dragged away after
- 52:12deciding fuck it, what did he say fucking about?
- 52:15I don't know. I can't.
- 52:17Remember, but Kyle in. Quotation marks finds Laura so
- 52:21this is not the real Kyle takes her to.
- 52:24A den type area there's a fireplace in like a cozy rag and
- 52:31Laura's like listen we can't trust John and Kyle's like yeah
- 52:36no Amy found us and told us all about it.
- 52:39I you know, I I want us to do this.
- 52:42I want us to be together. And then when Laura tries to
- 52:44leave, he won't let her out. It's the same thing that we see
- 52:47every single time they're in a room together.
- 52:48He does the whole love Bonnie type thing, and the second she
- 52:52tries to leave, he gets violent. Yeah.
- 52:54Yeah, like. He's like, I want to have sex
- 52:58before we die. And she agrees for a little bit
- 53:00and they start kind of going at it.
- 53:02But then as she's like getting into it, she's like, no, no,
- 53:05this isn't. She's like, this is weird.
- 53:06Yeah. Meanwhile.
- 53:08Evan. In quotation marks asks Amy
- 53:11dance, and then he asks to Make Love also.
- 53:15Yeah, basically. Mirroring the story with Kyle so
- 53:18he's not violent and he says something about being stronger
- 53:22as long as they're together and then they kiss and then he
- 53:28turns. Into Carver and then John.
- 53:31And then John, who I. Call John Carver.
- 53:34Oh my God, do you feel good about?
- 53:35That I've been thinking about it ever since.
- 53:37Yesterday. OK.
- 53:38All right. Well, I'm glad you got it out of
- 53:40your system. He invented the peanut.
- 53:43Invented a whole nut? Or was it peanut butter?
- 53:48Oh no. Oh my God.
- 53:49Anyways, John goes after them. He cuts off his hand, he cuts
- 53:55off like they cut off John's hand.
- 53:57They cut off his hand and they set.
- 53:58Him on fire but nothing really seems to take for very long
- 54:02Yeah. Like that that's.
- 54:03The thing that keeps happening, like he keeps getting attacked,
- 54:05he keeps fucking with him, they attack him, he fucks off for a
- 54:08second and then he comes back all over.
- 54:09There is one scene though, where he comes.
- 54:11Back and he's charred, and I thought we were going to like,
- 54:13every time we cut to him, he'd be a little less charred.
- 54:15That would have been cool. That wasn't the case.
- 54:18I just think we saw multiple takes where the makeup wasn't
- 54:21done 100% the same. Yeah, you're probably right.
- 54:24Yeah. That was cool, though.
- 54:25So, yeah. So Colin, Laura, they're getting
- 54:28into it. Laura wants to stop.
- 54:30This is where they want to stop. She tells him that.
- 54:32She's afraid of him and that they're breaking up for good.
- 54:36And then he turns into a demon. Yeah, so.
- 54:39Meanwhile, with that going on, John is showing Evan and Amy who
- 54:43he is. So he's given like the whole Old
- 54:46Town, like, all right, I'm going to take you all to school.
- 54:49He like, puts them in the desk. He gets like a fucking
- 54:51chalkboard. And this is very Freddy.
- 54:53Krueger. It's very Freddy Krueger.
- 54:55Yeah. And so basically he explains the
- 55:00whole order of things. He explains the club, which is a
- 55:04club of demons. They're disciples of the Prince.
- 55:06Of darkness. We're not allowed to say that,
- 55:08and we're not allowed to say the other one.
- 55:11Yeah. And we're not allowed to confirm
- 55:13or deny the existence of either of those.
- 55:16And Amy, like Amy, if she gets out of everything in this
- 55:21timeline, could go on to be a fantastic lawyer because she's
- 55:24like, OK, But, you know, by not confirming, that's essentially
- 55:27an admission. Yeah.
- 55:28Yeah. Essentially, yeah.
- 55:31He explains how you get in the Co-op, which is suicide and also
- 55:34murder, which we've already gone over ourselves.
- 55:37Committing and being like it's, it's not exclusive to just
- 55:41murderers, which feels pretty fucked up.
- 55:43Yeah. Yeah.
- 55:44Well, I I. I feel the same.
- 55:45Way about the whole suicide thing of it too like that's also
- 55:52it's all fucked up it's. All it's a.
- 55:54Terrible. It's a.
- 55:55Terrible club, don't recommend it.
- 55:56Yeah, anyways. So Kyle wakes.
- 55:59Up and he wait, wait, wait hold on this has.
- 56:02Happened. No, no, no.
- 56:03No. Cuz part of what they're talking
- 56:05about, it's not just about the club, what's happening here in
- 56:08this purgatory. So sometimes they like to stop
- 56:10time and mess around with things a little bit, but they also kind
- 56:12of like to administer these little tests and what happens
- 56:15here determines what's gonna happen on the outside.
- 56:18No, I have these notes right here next to the courtroom.
- 56:20I have the Kyle thing right before.
- 56:22That I think this is all happening at the same time,
- 56:24which is fine. We can talk about what you're
- 56:25talking about right now first, because it's fine, because
- 56:29cutting back and forth can get confused.
- 56:30It does, yeah. Yeah.
- 56:31But yeah, you're right. So yeah, they stop time and
- 56:34basically like they present these situations like how are
- 56:36you going to handle this? They have to face the fears or.
- 56:38They'll face consequences and they tally up their reactions
- 56:42and decide if they'll ever die. And that's the thing that
- 56:44confuses. Me, because it doesn't end up
- 56:47mattering. Yeah, at all.
- 56:50At the end of the. Movie.
- 56:51Yeah. So what's?
- 56:52The point there is. No point.
- 56:55Yeah, there is no point to any of this.
- 56:57He's just like either he's. Lying or this movie forgot its
- 57:00own rules. I think that I.
- 57:03Think that one. I think that too.
- 57:04Yeah, yeah. So anyways, so Kyle's whole
- 57:07thing, he wakes up in his bedroom and he has Laura on top
- 57:12of him who is like, Oh my God, like, did you have a bad dream?
- 57:16Like, And then she's like, do you remember what happened last
- 57:19night? It's like, I have no idea what
- 57:20you're talking about. And she's like, I had the worst
- 57:22ever. Dream ever nightmare.
- 57:25And she's like, here, let me remind you.
- 57:27And things start to get a little steamy, but then she becomes a
- 57:32demon. Yeah.
- 57:34Pretty, pretty demony, yeah. Yeah, I think that's the end of
- 57:38Carl and Laura. I think it is too.
- 57:41'Cause now we have a. Big final fight between John and
- 57:45Amy and Evan. So John comes for Amy and Evan
- 57:50says John will have to kill him first.
- 57:53And so they start to fight and Amy helps and Evan is
- 57:58encouraging her to keep fighting but then John becomes Carver and
- 58:01Amy shuts down. So fucking weird.
- 58:04This is like a whole weird thing.
- 58:05So like they have this whole duel and it goes up to like the
- 58:08second floor and Carver is down on the ground about to get Amy,
- 58:14the real Carver. I think.
- 58:15I don't fucking know. I can't fucking tell.
- 58:18I. Can't either.
- 58:18I don't know. So, Evan.
- 58:20Jumps off of the balcony and then we got to fade to black,
- 58:24and then it fades back and he's suddenly tied up to a chain.
- 58:28Yeah, being held over some pit and Amy is being tied up and
- 58:36about to be forced to endure Carver.
- 58:39Yeah, and. Basically, he says that the
- 58:42chain will slide loose if she tries to run, but Evan manages
- 58:46to get loose because Carver's not that good at hanging up
- 58:48chains apparently, and so he starts fighting and they're just
- 58:52kind of fighting their way through the hall.
- 58:55At one point he gets Evan gets blasted with some hot steam, so
- 59:00he falls over the rail, but the hook gets.
- 59:03Caught. So he's Gucci and then no.
- 59:06Carver is Gucci. Then we have man that.
- 59:10Joke. All the right elements had to
- 59:13line up for that. Then they're in the hall.
- 59:17Evan's bloody, they're fighting again.
- 59:19I don't this movie doesn't this just.
- 59:21Repeats like a couple of times like over and over again.
- 59:25We have like the same, you know what keeps happening playing
- 59:28like a side school or. Video game and sometimes you
- 59:30like you fall through the floor into another part of the level
- 59:33and you're like what is the actual architecture of this
- 59:35building that I'm in that's this movie what's happening here so
- 59:40like. He's all right alone with John
- 59:45and Amy is hiding in a room, but then John Carver punches through
- 59:50the wall to get Amy because suddenly these.
- 59:53Walls aren't made of stone. But then Evan comes back.
- 59:56He's got a weapon again and it's fire, and then he catches.
- 1:00:01Yeah, he catches his sleeve on. Fire and then Carver takes some
- 1:00:06silks from the wall, presumably priceless, and uses them to
- 1:00:10smother the fire and he chases them out and he has got.
- 1:00:14He takes a sword also from a presumably priceless armor suit
- 1:00:19of armor, and he is very bad at swinging the sword with his
- 1:00:24burnt up arm seems. Legit.
- 1:00:28And he knocks A sconce off the wall.
- 1:00:30But but apparently this castle has been upgraded because the
- 1:00:35sconces are gas powered and it's also a wall spike.
- 1:00:39Yes, there's also. The wall spike is there yes yes
- 1:00:42yes so Evan pushes him into the wall triangle yes.
- 1:00:47So we have that going on, but it's not enough to 100% get him.
- 1:00:53But it's OK because Amy fights back and she ignites him with
- 1:00:58some fire and then the fire goes into the wall triangle gasconts
- 1:01:02and then there's fire and then time restarts.
- 1:01:06No, no you didn't. Even mention the best part, he
- 1:01:08fucking explodes. He goes kaboom.
- 1:01:13Like big time. You know it did not make that.
- 1:01:16Much of an impression. Are you kidding me?
- 1:01:17That's like. The best part of this movie, I
- 1:01:19think that that guy watch Prom Night 4 is like, I got to have
- 1:01:22at least one of those explosions.
- 1:01:24Maybe. Maybe the explosions are.
- 1:01:26Actually theaters and then could could be.
- 1:01:29Or maybe he was. Initially mad about the
- 1:01:32explosions in Prom Night 4. And then on reflection, he was
- 1:01:35like, yeah, like at the end he's like.
- 1:01:38There's something missing, Or maybe third?
- 1:01:41Option John's actor wanted there to be an explosion and it was
- 1:01:47his like it was his contract writer to get to be one part of
- 1:01:51the movie. Yeah, one explosion.
- 1:01:53It's a. Pretty cool explosion, like it's
- 1:01:55Carver exploding. Like, I love all the fire stones
- 1:01:57that they have in this movie because, like it.
- 1:01:59It's legit. Yeah, they, they do a good job
- 1:02:01here. Like, it's kind of absurd how
- 1:02:03many times Carver catches on fire within 5 minutes, but it's
- 1:02:07worth it. So yeah, clock moves back.
- 1:02:11It's no longer 12. It's 11:59.
- 1:02:14And we're starting to see the movie start over again.
- 1:02:18Basically, Evan and Amy are dancing.
- 1:02:21Laura is confronting Kyle. Kyle gets violent, but we see
- 1:02:25something. A little different this time.
- 1:02:27We see John is influencing all of the conversations that are
- 1:02:30happening here and they don't realize that it's happening.
- 1:02:34He's like, basically telling them what to say.
- 1:02:38And sometimes the people listen to his cues and sometimes people
- 1:02:41ignore it. Yeah.
- 1:02:42But The thing is, is that. Laura actually did the fucking
- 1:02:44right things this time. I know.
- 1:02:46And that's what I don't understand about this movie.
- 1:02:48What message is trying to get out?
- 1:02:50Overall, I don't understand it either because.
- 1:02:52We have them again, they're alone in the room.
- 1:02:55Kyle tries to have sex with her again, but this time she follows
- 1:02:58through with a breakup. He chases her out of the room
- 1:03:00and ends up pushing her over a fucking balcony and she dies.
- 1:03:04I will say this is my favorite. John part though 'cause he was
- 1:03:07like, oh, multiple witnesses, no getting out of the sun, I kind.
- 1:03:12Of like this one with John and like the other like this whole
- 1:03:16other couple that's not even part of the movie.
- 1:03:18Like he goes over there. What the fuck was this is?
- 1:03:20So weird. This is so weird but like.
- 1:03:22Basically it's this couple. He's like saying to the girl.
- 1:03:26They're having a serious conversation about the
- 1:03:28relationship. The body is being taken away.
- 1:03:29Yeah, and she's like, look, you're.
- 1:03:31Not with me. Just like to use me, right?
- 1:03:34Like you actually care about me. And he's like, what are you
- 1:03:36talking about? And then John's like, tell him
- 1:03:39you're pregnant. And then she's like, I'm
- 1:03:40pregnant. And the guy is like, how could
- 1:03:43you do this? You did it to her.
- 1:03:46Come on dude. And then it just ends with them
- 1:03:53having this whole fucking meltdown like this just fucking
- 1:03:56thing I wish it ended with. This, It would be slightly
- 1:04:00better than the actual ending we get, which is Amy watching her
- 1:04:04friend Laura's body being taken away and then saying, Evan, I've
- 1:04:09got to go get my purse and Evan saying I will come with you.
- 1:04:12And she said, no, just go get the car.
- 1:04:15And she wanders into an empty castle and outcomes the drunk
- 1:04:20Mr. Carter. And then we've got John popping
- 1:04:23up going. That's all, folks.
- 1:04:26Yeah. Like he?
- 1:04:29Yeah, I don't fucking know. It's such a weird way to end the
- 1:04:34movie. It's so fucking weird.
- 1:04:36I I really I just. I feel like this movie wants to
- 1:04:40say something, and I feel like I don't agree with what it's
- 1:04:43wanting to say. I don't.
- 1:04:44Yeah, I don't know. Man, I don't know.
- 1:04:46It's such a weird movie. It has a weird message.
- 1:04:49I think it's trying to say something good.
- 1:04:51I just don't know if it's really getting it across.
- 1:04:54I hope it's trying to say something good.
- 1:04:56I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt here, but yeah, I
- 1:05:00don't know, like I just, it's so confusing.
- 1:05:04There's a lot of just random shit that happens.
- 1:05:06It doesn't really have like a, a connecting thread.
- 1:05:10And the fact that they're like, none of it mattered.
- 1:05:13And yeah, it's one of the things that really upsets me is like,
- 1:05:16what was the point? What was the point of the whole
- 1:05:18thing? You even said that this is the
- 1:05:19part like this is the all for this.
- 1:05:22And it never really like, I don't fucking know, but I'm
- 1:05:27gonna keep it at three. I'm bumping it down to.
- 1:05:29Three, OK. Ending average 3.
- 1:05:33All right, this. Might be.
- 1:05:35Far lowest ever. It's one of them, yeah.
- 1:05:38What did Italia think? OK, well, Italia.
- 1:05:40Was showing us her tummy. She's being very playful and
- 1:05:43demanding about it. She was pretty restless.
- 1:05:46She wanted to go out at 35 O 5. She kept hitting her button and
- 1:05:50then at the end of the movie when the clock struck midnight
- 1:05:53again and timing started, she started barking.
- 1:05:55She wanted this movie to be fucking over.
- 1:05:57No, you did not hit start. Over did she?
- 1:06:01She was mad. So I think I don't know Italia's
- 1:06:06ever gotten below A5 before, but I think it's a three cuz it's
- 1:06:10not for me. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:12Not for me. Dog.
- 1:06:13No me. Dog, it's up for me.
- 1:06:18Who is dog? Yeah.
- 1:06:22Who is always ultimate warrior? Nobody ate any.
- 1:06:28Food at any point, No they. Didn't it's, It's tough one.
- 1:06:38It's a really tough one. Let's say it's Laura, Cuz Laura,
- 1:06:43smack the spider. Yeah, OK.
- 1:06:45Yeah, Zoe's really good at that. Yeah.
- 1:06:50Was it who or a holler for Cordelia Holler?
- 1:06:52Think it was a holler. Yeah, OK.
- 1:06:54She was hollering out there while we were talking.
- 1:06:57That's true. I think Zoe was.
- 1:06:58Defending this movie though, she's like, I like that.
- 1:07:01Part where the spider got squished and it was gross.
- 1:07:03Yeah, I like the explosion. OK.
- 1:07:08Who did you relate to? Got a real cool group of people
- 1:07:16to relate to I related to. Darren, let's stay here in the
- 1:07:22library, read some books, Yeah. I I think I related to the DJ at
- 1:07:40the opening of this. Movie because all I wanted to do
- 1:07:42at this. Fucking party is listen to music
- 1:07:44and not interact with any of these people.
- 1:07:45This DJI. Like to imagine he was stuck in
- 1:07:49his own purgatory when the rest of this was going on because
- 1:07:52he's like, all right, we announced king and queen at
- 1:07:54midnight. And like, you can see him
- 1:07:55mentally doing the counting down and like, he got stuck in
- 1:07:59purgatory for hours and he's like, God damn it, I was so
- 1:08:01close, so close to midnight. What?
- 1:08:03Was not happening. Yeah, that was me.
- 1:08:10OK, cool. Our new tagline.
- 1:08:15Is got milk. Got milk?
- 1:08:18Hungry for apples? Hungry for apples?
- 1:08:21Let's see. All right.
- 1:08:22I hope you all remember. What it was you're talking about
- 1:08:24at the beginning? Yeah, you're right.
- 1:08:28OK man, it really was a bad slogan.
- 1:08:31If we can remember it, I know. OK, so get that.
- 1:08:37What would Dom do? Tom wouldn't be at this fucking.
- 1:08:41Prom So I would have been like, Nah, I do I.
- 1:08:47Think Tom strikes me as the kind of guy that would go to a high
- 1:08:50school prom you. Know like, glad he was a lot.
- 1:08:53Younger than. Him.
- 1:08:54Yeah, I think he would. Also chaperone will be OK, OK.
- 1:08:59So in this world, he is also a chaperone, and it's a little
- 1:09:02beast prom. Yeah.
- 1:09:03And he just beats the shit out of Mr. Carver.
- 1:09:06Yeah. And he sees him stomping.
- 1:09:07The show out of a ghost. He's like, I can do better.
- 1:09:09He's like, he's like, man. How many coronas if I had if I'm
- 1:09:12ghost stomp and drunk? Oh boy.
- 1:09:17Yeah, that's what happens here. It all ends because he just gets
- 1:09:21drunk on coronas. Stomps Carver.
- 1:09:23Yeah, yeah, I like it. No go.
- 1:09:28He actually gets John though. He actually does kill John and
- 1:09:30just put a stop to this movie. Yeah, he stomps Satan.
- 1:09:35That's what he does. He gets so drunk on Corona that
- 1:09:37he like goes over and stomps Satan.
- 1:09:39That man makes a point of saying.
- 1:09:40Grace before every meal he does, even if he's already go stomp
- 1:09:44and drunk at the beginning of the meal.
- 1:09:45You may have the club the. Way you don't have his family.
- 1:09:49Family is way more powerful. Yeah, all right.
- 1:09:54St. Sequel I want a remake of.
- 1:09:57This movie, but it's good, OK. Yeah, I think that there's
- 1:10:01potential for this. Yeah.
- 1:10:02You know, like there is. Potential with the.
- 1:10:03Story here. There were good ideas here I.
- 1:10:06Want this movie, but it actually seems like it cares about
- 1:10:10people. Yeah, again, I am not saying
- 1:10:15that about anybody who likes this movie.
- 1:10:18You can like a movie and not agree with it.
- 1:10:20That's cool. That's fine.
- 1:10:21You know it's. Fine, Like I'm sure some people
- 1:10:23like it, you know, and I'm sure some people have different.
- 1:10:25Interpretations of it than me but we're going to get into our.
- 1:10:28Review that I OK, I would. Love to hear that.
- 1:10:31But yeah, no, I would just like to see this have a little bit
- 1:10:35more heart and like for what it is, be more grounded.
- 1:10:39I don't need all of the trippy weird cuts.
- 1:10:41I need it to. I'm OK with that stuff.
- 1:10:43I just need to. Make sense?
- 1:10:44I need to like, not be so fucking lost and bored and I
- 1:10:48want, I want. More of a moral Gray in the
- 1:10:51characters. Yeah, they kind of tried to do
- 1:10:55that with Kyle, but I feel like it was like.
- 1:11:00Made him too shitty. Yeah, like it.
- 1:11:02Made him too shitty to. Care about his troubles?
- 1:11:04Yeah. So I just, I think there are a
- 1:11:07lot of really, really good ideas in here and there were some,
- 1:11:10there's some good acting, some good effects.
- 1:11:12I just want this story to have, like, it's not the type of story
- 1:11:17that you can just have. It's not like a slasher where
- 1:11:19you can just throw away and have fun and you don't have to think
- 1:11:21about it too hard because you're putting these messages out there
- 1:11:24and you need to think about what the message is.
- 1:11:26Yeah. OK, OK, so are we ready to do
- 1:11:32reviews? I think so, yeah.
- 1:11:35I think we're at that point now. So I have one, a positive review
- 1:11:38from IMDb. OK, so it's a fairly long one,
- 1:11:42but this person, I think is pleading a case that I think we
- 1:11:44need to hear. Yes, I'm actually.
- 1:11:46I'm really excited to hear from somebody who likes us.
- 1:11:48Just to be fair, this is. Still a six out of 10, but it's
- 1:11:52titled I've Always Loved This Little Diabolical Club.
- 1:11:55It's reviewed in June 2009. Damn beam nostalgia once again
- 1:12:01and has gotten me into a spot of defending a movie I still like.
- 1:12:04While it's not exactly a superb film, I saw The Club back in
- 1:12:081994 on a horror movie festival. I remember enjoying it quite a
- 1:12:12bit there. You just went by and while my
- 1:12:14memories of this film became quite a bit vague, I never
- 1:12:17really forgot about it. With my love for horror having
- 1:12:20rekindled in recent years, the urge crew to re watch this
- 1:12:23Canadian genre film. It took a bit of effort, I'm
- 1:12:26sorry. Canadian genre, I guess.
- 1:12:29I mean it's. A Canadian and it's a genre film
- 1:12:31OK I. Was I heard that as like the
- 1:12:34genre was Canadian and I was like, that's not how that works.
- 1:12:37Genre film from Canadian. Not OK.
- 1:12:40Yes, it took a bit of effort and a bit of luck to finally track
- 1:12:43down a copy of it, but I got 1 and I was literally holding my
- 1:12:46breath when I popped in the tape that same day I received it.
- 1:12:50Maybe this movie would suck after all those years not being
- 1:12:53half the fun I remembered it to be.
- 1:12:55Relief. It doesn't suck, and it's still
- 1:12:58fun, but you'll have to be a bit forgiving.
- 1:13:01And for a horror fan that's usually not a hard thing to do.
- 1:13:03I agree with that, Yeah. The Club basically is an amalgam
- 1:13:07of good ideas, fun special effects, atmosphere, a healthy
- 1:13:10dosage of enthusiasm from cast and crew, and the use of a great
- 1:13:13gothic castle location. Obviously it's not a horror film
- 1:13:17to be taken too seriously, but I'll admit the execution of the
- 1:13:20film leaves things to be desired.
- 1:13:22Plus the movie has a good and fun concept to boot, but lacks a
- 1:13:26decent story and feels underdeveloped.
- 1:13:28It's a simple set up. There is a school dance in a
- 1:13:31remote castle. When midnight comes around,
- 1:13:32small group of friends suddenly find themselves and it's a real
- 1:13:35situation. All other students have
- 1:13:37disappeared and while we're wandering through the castle
- 1:13:39alone trying to figure out what happened to them, they'll soon
- 1:13:42become the target of a nightmarish manifestation.
- 1:13:46If you had fun with movies like Night of the Demons, One and
- 1:13:49Three, Spooky's and maybe especially even Ken Russell's
- 1:13:53Gothic and then go ahead and give The Club a try.
- 1:13:56It's a similar film only with a more 90s looking film.
- 1:13:58Back in 94 I didn't realize it, but The Club stars a young
- 1:14:01Andrea Roth in it. Only discovered this blonde
- 1:14:04Canadian cutie about four years later when I saw her alongside
- 1:14:07Rugger Hauer in Crossworlds. Recently I saw John Fawcett's
- 1:14:10Last Sex and was again surprised about how decent an actress she
- 1:14:13is and mature woman she became to be.
- 1:14:15That's a weird way to end the review, but, you know, that's
- 1:14:19fitting for this. Look, I get what that person is
- 1:14:26saying, though. I think, yeah, they have, like,
- 1:14:27a factor of nostalgia coming in right there.
- 1:14:29But at the same time, you, like, we are generally forgiving for
- 1:14:34movies. We like shitty movies a lot of
- 1:14:36the time. Like OK.
- 1:14:38I think some of the ways that I could tie this and like, cuz we
- 1:14:42love the sweepaway camp movies. Yeah, right.
- 1:14:44And I think especially the Pamela Springsteen version of
- 1:14:50Angela Baker, she has got this weird, corrupted morality, but
- 1:14:55you can tell the movies aren't trying to make a point about it.
- 1:15:00Yeah. They're just having fun.
- 1:15:01Yes. And I think.
- 1:15:02There's a version of the club with that kind of a spirit that
- 1:15:07would be excellent. See, The thing is, I do.
- 1:15:11Get Night of the Demons vibes from this movie.
- 1:15:13I yeah, the Demons is. A great way to tell.
- 1:15:15This type of story and I fully get like a cross.
- 1:15:17Between those two I could see absolutely working.
- 1:15:20Yeah. And, and like, I'm so, so glad
- 1:15:22that this person remembered it fondly and did not have that
- 1:15:25memory spoiled for them. And it sounds like they liked a
- 1:15:27lot of the same elements we liked and disliked a lot of the
- 1:15:30same elements we disliked. It's just what they ranked is
- 1:15:33like. The more precipitating factor
- 1:15:36for their score was some people just.
- 1:15:39Like, you know, like, I think I mean this, these are just things
- 1:15:43that didn't work for us. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:15:46And that's. What I'm saying like it's one of
- 1:15:47those things, like I, and I've said it throughout this whole
- 1:15:50thing, this movie is not for me. These are the reasons it's not
- 1:15:54for me. And I fully recognize that
- 1:15:55that's my own opinion. And I'm not judging anybody else
- 1:15:58who doesn't share that opinion, you know, And yeah, I've seen
- 1:16:02like I, I looked this. Movie up too.
- 1:16:03Like I saw plenty of other people on like Reddit, like talk
- 1:16:07about it fondly, you know, like it has its fans for sure.
- 1:16:11And I'm happy that there are people that like this movie
- 1:16:14because, you know, like it's it's good enough.
- 1:16:18And I do think like. Media at some point shouldn't be
- 1:16:21taken too seriously, but I do also think that it has to like
- 1:16:25you. You have to think about the
- 1:16:27impact of your words and the messages you're putting out too.
- 1:16:30And I just, this is just, like I said, it's just too victim
- 1:16:34blamey of a movie for me and how it comes across to me.
- 1:16:37Yeah, it's a bit weird. Yeah.
- 1:16:39So. That's it for that.
- 1:16:41Yeah. But I do have a listener review.
- 1:16:43We have one from Michael Lee Howard.
- 1:16:45OK, I'm excited for this. One Michael says I thought the
- 1:16:48movie. Was OK.
- 1:16:49It almost felt like an extended episode of Buffy.
- 1:16:52I totally see that. Right.
- 1:16:53Yeah. Well.
- 1:16:54I even mentioned the Jonathan thing.
- 1:16:56Yeah. I easily could have done without
- 1:16:58the huge theme of sexual assault throughout the storyline.
- 1:17:00All in all, not a fave. 6 out of 10, so still like a higher
- 1:17:04rating right there. Six out 10.
- 1:17:06Same as the person on IMDb. Yeah.
- 1:17:08I mean, yeah, like the the sexual assault theme is just
- 1:17:12really a bummer throughout this whole movie.
- 1:17:14It would have been so much better if it were something
- 1:17:16like, I would. I would be so much.
- 1:17:18And this kind of sucks. But like, if he was just trying
- 1:17:21to kill her, he just, like would have been told it's a fucking
- 1:17:25horror movie, you know? Yeah, like sexual assault is.
- 1:17:28Just a little bit too. Real and like.
- 1:17:30And that's the thing that I tend to struggle with in horror
- 1:17:33movies because I know a lot of people are like, well, that is
- 1:17:35realistically a thing that happens.
- 1:17:36And it's like, but I like. With a horror movie, you.
- 1:17:40Know like murder is on the table.
- 1:17:43I mean, that's just, it's kind of.
- 1:17:44A given, yeah. It just it doesn't.
- 1:17:46Feel like sexual assault should be used for entertainment
- 1:17:51purposes. I mean there are ways for.
- 1:17:53It to like it can work in a story.
- 1:17:56I mean it doesn't like automatically disqualify like a
- 1:17:58movie or something like that. That's like the whole thing.
- 1:18:01With The Handmaid's Tale, it's like a huge piece of it.
- 1:18:05It's a it's a show that I'm glad who releases one episode at a
- 1:18:10time because having to watch the whole thing, like binging the
- 1:18:14whole thing is would be a fucking bummer.
- 1:18:15Yeah, I could see that of a thing, but it's not like
- 1:18:18gratuitous in any kind of way. And this movie, I feel like
- 1:18:22borders on gratuitous with how they treat it.
- 1:18:24Yeah, for sure. OK.
- 1:18:26Well, thanks Michael. I really appreciate you having a
- 1:18:28review. Yes, thank you and.
- 1:18:30Then. Other than that, that does it.
- 1:18:33It does so. That's it for.
- 1:18:35This week's movie The Curb next week.
- 1:18:39What do we have on the menu? Oh boy.

- 1:19:27Also because it's on. Tubi OK, it was the second.
- 1:19:29One, I said, I understand why you don't remember it, because
- 1:19:32it was followed very shortly after by Vicks.
- 1:19:36I mean Vicks. So I don't know if I've ever
- 1:19:41actually seen this version of it.
- 1:19:43I haven't. So that'll be interesting.
- 1:19:45I've seen obviously the original and I've seen the 2013.
- 1:19:48I looked it up I think. This is ATV movie.
- 1:19:51Oh really? Yeah.
- 1:19:53OK, so kind of. The whole tradition of turning
- 1:19:55Stephen King books into TV movies.
- 1:19:58I really hope that, oh gosh, that they would.
- 1:20:02Do that I don't understand. Why they keep wanting to redo
- 1:20:04this movie? Because nobody keeps.
- 1:20:06Getting it 100% right. But the first movie was so.
- 1:20:09Fucking good. Who cares?
- 1:20:11Who cares? Shut up, Stephen King.
- 1:20:15I'm sure he's the one complaining about it.
- 1:20:17Oh yeah, obviously. That's him.
- 1:20:19Like dude who? Cares.
- 1:20:21I don't think he's actually. The one complaining he probably
- 1:20:23is he complaints about. All kinds of movies that like,
- 1:20:25people don't do right, well, he also praises.
- 1:20:29A lot of movies so that people do with his Yeah the.
- 1:20:32Only people he praise are like Mike Flanagan he also praised.
- 1:20:36The ending for the Mist? Oh, that's true, he said.
- 1:20:40It's better than his. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:20:44OK, so it's quote. Are you even talking?
- 1:20:48English right now. What the fuck was that Cordelia
- 1:20:52screaming? Cordelia, Cordelia, why you cry.
- 1:20:56And it's because it's 10 minutes.
