- 0:00Speaker 1: This podcast is recorded on gaddigal Land Always was, always
- 0:03Speaker 1: will be Aboriginal Land.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Hey checks, I'm sal and I'm out And this is
- 0:12Speaker 2: super bro Cheeks to show that shares life lessons and
- 0:14Speaker 2: tips to help make you rich in life. And oh
- 0:17Speaker 2: my god, we are so excited for today's episode because
- 0:20Speaker 2: we are joined by Lucy Blackistan, one of the brains
- 0:23Speaker 2: behind She You Should care About and the co author
- 0:25Speaker 2: of Make It Make Sense, She you Should Care About.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I'm sure you Cheeks are completely across it because we
- 0:30Speaker 3: talk about it pretty much every other episode. But debuted
- 0:34Speaker 3: in twenty eighteen and has now a massed over three
- 0:36Speaker 3: million followers. It's a media company that calls through the bullshit.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Welcome Lucy, thank you for having me.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Thank you so much for fitting us into your busy,
- 0:46Speaker 4: busy schedule. No, this is my only thing today, so like, actually,
- 0:51Speaker 4: you're welcome. No, yea, I was first.
- 0:54Speaker 5: What's it like being better than everyone else?
- 0:56Speaker 4: Shut the fight up, I'm honestly.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Before we jump into the questions, we love to start
- 1:01Speaker 3: with a life lesson of the week.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I got one.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:04Speaker 3: Would you like to kick us out?
- 1:05Speaker 4: Yes? I word it's fears of all my voice doesn't
- 1:07Speaker 4: usually sound like this. I'm but fucked because I've been
- 1:09Speaker 4: talking NonStop a week. But my life lesson of the
- 1:12Speaker 4: week is you cannot trust technology, but you can trust yourself.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Oh what happened?
- 1:20Speaker 4: Okay, two things happened. First of all, so I've been
- 1:23Speaker 4: at south By Southwest this week debuting kind of like
- 1:27Speaker 4: beta testing a live show that I really I'm gonna
- 1:30Speaker 4: manifest it. I really want to take to the Austin
- 1:33Speaker 4: that's south By Southwest, like the big south By Southwest.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Usually I say when I'm doing speaking events, I don't
- 1:39Speaker 4: want slides, I don't want technology. I want nothing behind me.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I want everyone focused on me, and I don't want
- 1:45Speaker 4: to be worried about anything except for me. I can
- 1:47Speaker 4: trust myself. I can't trust technology. The whole premise of
- 1:51Speaker 4: this live show was that I built a fake Instagram
- 1:54Speaker 4: account to tell the story of shit you should care about.
- 1:57Speaker 4: So the one thing it relied on the one thing
- 1:59Speaker 4: that I asked so many times. I was like, we
- 2:01Speaker 4: need to be able to plug my phone in so
- 2:03Speaker 4: I can scroll through my phone and tell the story
- 2:06Speaker 4: as if I'm sitting here talking to you, like scrolling
- 2:08Speaker 4: through my phone and then we get there and I
- 2:12Speaker 4: plug my phone and it doesn't show up on screen,
- 2:15Speaker 4: and I'm thinking, my whole show an hour is based
- 2:18Speaker 4: on this. Thank God. A woman in Stem one of
- 2:21Speaker 4: the Tich girlies. Yeah, she got in there, she got
- 2:24Speaker 4: under the stage, she fiddled around with some things ten
- 2:27Speaker 4: minutes before the show went on.
- 2:29Speaker 5: She like I would have developed a crush on her.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, And in fact, like I'm like, how do
- 2:34Speaker 4: I send you flowers? Yes?
- 2:40Speaker 3: Yeah, like eggs in the morning.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 4: But the next day so fun. I was moderating a
- 2:47Speaker 4: chat with Teddy Swims on like a Huger stage. Like
- 2:50Speaker 4: there was like three thousand people there. Yeah, it was huge,
- 2:53Speaker 4: and he's like I didn't realize the nicest motherfucker in
- 2:57Speaker 4: the world, but like he's so famous and I especially
- 3:00Speaker 4: in Australia and New Zealand and so so many people
- 3:03Speaker 4: showed up. And then at the end of the talk
- 3:05Speaker 4: they were like, there's an iPad and people will be
- 3:08Speaker 4: asking questions and you can go through and like peck
- 3:11Speaker 4: the questions. So I was checking the time, We're twenty
- 3:14Speaker 4: minutes left. I go on the iPad. It's not connected
- 3:18Speaker 4: to Wi Fi. So I'm on stage in front of
- 3:20Speaker 4: all these people. But I has had to be like,
- 3:23Speaker 4: hey and everyone, actually there's no Wi Fi on this iPad,
- 3:27Speaker 4: so could someone please sort this out for me. It
- 3:30Speaker 4: took about ten minutes for someone to come and like
- 3:32Speaker 4: drop a new iPad to me. I was sitting there
- 3:34Speaker 4: thinking do they hear me? Are they going to bring
- 3:36Speaker 4: me a new iPad in the meantime? Titty? And it
- 3:39Speaker 4: was actually his manager, Luke on stage two such legends,
- 3:42Speaker 4: like we were just having chats. They I think they
- 3:44Speaker 4: were like, she's handling this so fine, We're just going
- 3:46Speaker 4: to keep chatting. And it wouldn't have meted. No one
- 3:49Speaker 4: else noticed, it wouldn't have metted. But I got messages
- 3:52Speaker 4: afterwards being like, Lucy, you were amazing, because as soon
- 3:55Speaker 4: as there was no Wi Fi on that iPad, I
- 3:57Speaker 4: would have been and perts. Yeah, but I just had
- 4:00Speaker 4: already learned you cannot trust technology, You can only trust yourself. Yeah,
- 4:03Speaker 4: And honestly I already knew that, which is why I've
- 4:05Speaker 4: never done technology heavy stuff before, and I say I
- 4:09Speaker 4: won't do it again.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it is there's so many things that can go
- 4:13Speaker 1: wrong with it, and I think, exactly what you did,
- 4:16Speaker 1: you just have to then sit.
- 4:17Speaker 5: There and go, well, what's happening?
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I think when you try to
- 4:23Speaker 1: recover and pretend it's not happening, that's yeah, you're like.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Why you lie, and that's human.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Well yeah, I don't think people want a like professional
- 4:34Speaker 4: on stage anymore. They want someone that's like, yeah, and
- 4:38Speaker 4: I tripped on the way up to my life show.
- 4:40Speaker 4: It's like I decided for some reason. Instead, it was
- 4:43Speaker 4: like steps up, they announced me. Why did I decide
- 4:46Speaker 4: to do a lunge up on the front of the stage.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I'm sure, And I didn't like four. I just did
- 4:53Speaker 4: a bit of a sile scuffle, but everyone saw it,
- 4:56Speaker 4: and I saw. I just sat down and I was like,
- 4:58Speaker 4: oh today, drain guys. I'm just a normal girl. Look
- 5:06Speaker 4: I just tripped on my way up and like, yeah, no.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I'm so people fall in love with you even more
- 5:13Speaker 3: before you begin, So take it away, trip.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, okay, what's your life lessons?
- 5:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, okay, my life lesson is something that I
- 5:21Speaker 3: saw on TikTok this week. I'll link the original post
- 5:24Speaker 3: in the show notes, but I thought it was kind
- 5:25Speaker 3: of relevant to today's episode. And this chick said, I
- 5:29Speaker 3: think growing up is just becoming who you were at
- 5:32Speaker 3: fifteen again, but loving her this time.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I was like, that is so beautiful, because I
- 5:39Speaker 3: think in our early twenties we try to like reject
- 5:42Speaker 3: so much of who we were as teenagers and put
- 5:45Speaker 3: it off as being cringe and really try and push
- 5:48Speaker 3: away all of those things that make us unique. And
- 5:50Speaker 3: even when you are a teenager, like you're just so
- 5:52Speaker 3: hard on yourself, and then when you look back when
- 5:55Speaker 3: you're in your late twenties or thirties, you're like, I
- 5:58Speaker 3: actually was really fucking cool, and person that I've become
- 6:00Speaker 3: now is someone that my fifteen year old self would love.
- 6:03Speaker 1: There's this tweet and it's like, age eight I've been
- 6:05Speaker 1: really into fantasy books, Lord of the Rings, dragons and
- 6:07Speaker 1: collecting little trinkets age eighteen. I can't remember the last
- 6:11Speaker 1: time I felt true happiness age twenty five, so I've been.
- 6:14Speaker 5: Really into fantasy books, Lord of the Rings, dragons, and.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Collecting little yees.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Literally were also knew what was.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 6:25Speaker 5: Okay.
- 6:26Speaker 1: My life lesson of the week, which I feel like
- 6:28Speaker 1: ties into all of our energy very well, is that
- 6:31Speaker 1: a new survey has found women who make time for
- 6:35Speaker 1: Girls Night every twenty two days are living their best life?
- 6:39Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, And I even go to every twenty two
- 6:43Speaker 4: days every night.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I was, yeah, we're saying twenty two as a as
- 6:49Speaker 1: a max specific number two.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I'm like, how does that line up with our cycles?
- 6:54Speaker 3: Is there something in there?
- 6:56Speaker 4: It's like a mag It's actually so true.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Yeah, but yeah so.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Author Danielle Bayard Jackson puts it best. Research suggests that
- 7:03Speaker 1: women have higher expectations of support and intimacy in their
- 7:07Speaker 1: close relationships and men. Do Women integrate our friends into
- 7:11Speaker 1: our lives as deeply as siblings, whereas men can treat
- 7:14Speaker 1: friends like cousins.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I don't think it's like a comparison, but I just
- 7:18Speaker 5: love it.
- 7:18Speaker 1: So sending to your girls. Women need girls night at
- 7:22Speaker 1: least every twenty two days.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll get in the cowl every twenty two days.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I feel like, for.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Like London, girlies works so hard sometimes to get everywhere,
- 7:32Speaker 4: and when you start having kids and things, twenty two
- 7:34Speaker 4: days seems doable.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah for me, I still live with seven people. I'm like,
- 7:38Speaker 4: I want to wake up in the morning and I
- 7:40Speaker 4: want to see my girls. Yeah, I'm like, so seven people, girl,
- 7:44Speaker 4: I know. One of them is my brother, amazing, like
- 7:46Speaker 4: a bunch of my best friends from high school. It's
- 7:48Speaker 4: so cute.
- 7:49Speaker 5: That sounds so fun. It's giving like new girl friends.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yea, honestly, people like and like, surely she owns a
- 7:55Speaker 4: house and she does that, she does us. I'm girl,
- 7:58Speaker 4: I still have. I still get told off not doing
- 8:00Speaker 4: the dishes. But I feel like it's because I grew
- 8:03Speaker 4: up really quick and like started being like a girl
- 8:05Speaker 4: boss like business yeah blah blah blah, not like a
- 8:09Speaker 4: like wearing a pencil skirt and kettils and shit. But
- 8:12Speaker 4: just like instead of being young, I started running this business,
- 8:15Speaker 4: which I loved, still love. And then I like set
- 8:18Speaker 4: the business up and realized I can actually do that
- 8:21Speaker 4: and still be like a normal young person.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Like.
- 8:23Speaker 4: So then I moved back in with my riends and
- 8:26Speaker 4: it's been the best thing. You were so I really
- 8:28Speaker 4: enjoy that.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I love the rewind of being like, yeah, am I
- 8:30Speaker 1: taking life so serious?
- 8:31Speaker 4: Well, it's like what you just said. We hosted a
- 8:33Speaker 4: house party the other weekend and there was it was
- 8:36Speaker 4: nineties themes amazing, and everyone walked into my room or
- 8:39Speaker 4: like this looks like my childhood bedroom and I was like, yeah,
- 8:42Speaker 4: because like, finally I have no one telling me what
- 8:46Speaker 4: to do with like my income.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I've got big girl money, money, kill money.
- 8:52Speaker 5: This question is one of our favorites.
- 8:54Speaker 1: In a teen Vogue interview, you said, I feel very
- 8:57Speaker 1: fucking passionately about the Internet.
- 9:00Speaker 5: I love the Internet.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah, with so much discourse on the Internet, I ask
- 9:04Speaker 1: this in the.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Most respectful and genuine way.
- 9:08Speaker 1: How because I love the Internet, but she can be
- 9:12Speaker 1: a cruel mystery.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Yeah, how do you stay in love with the Internet.
- 9:16Speaker 4: I think I've built it in a way that I
- 9:17Speaker 4: love it. Like I didn't show my face online for
- 9:22Speaker 4: the first like five or six years of running shit
- 9:24Speaker 4: you should care about, so I got to grow up
- 9:27Speaker 4: in private like twenty twenty. If I had shown my
- 9:30Speaker 4: face in twenty twenty when shit you should care about
- 9:32Speaker 4: was popping off and everyone was hating on us, but
- 9:34Speaker 4: everyone was hating on everyone, hateful time. Yeah, And like
- 9:38Speaker 4: also when I was younger and coming to terms with
- 9:41Speaker 4: like how I look and like having a look at
- 9:43Speaker 4: my face online every day and my body and what
- 9:45Speaker 4: I'm wearying like that would have fucked me up, right,
- 9:48Speaker 4: But instead when me and Rubes and Lott who are
- 9:51Speaker 4: my best friends who started chit you should care about
- 9:53Speaker 4: with me? They are now doing other jobs, still my
- 9:56Speaker 4: best friends. It was just like this became very clear
- 9:59Speaker 4: that it was like my baby. We decided like do
- 10:01Speaker 4: we know who runs the BBC? No? Do we know
- 10:03Speaker 4: what they look like?
- 10:04Speaker 2: No?
- 10:04Speaker 4: Do we care? No? So we were like, cool, let's
- 10:07Speaker 4: never show ourselves.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I love that.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Yeah, And I just think because I did that while
- 10:11Speaker 4: my brain was still forming, there's just no winning, Like
- 10:15Speaker 4: there's no fucking winning. And so I think even though
- 10:17Speaker 4: I didn't do it for that reason, I did it
- 10:19Speaker 4: because it was like we're talking about the news, Who
- 10:20Speaker 4: fucking cares what T shirt I'm wearing?
- 10:22Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 10:23Speaker 4: Trying.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I feel as well, like even if you did put
- 10:27Speaker 1: yourself out there, the focus wouldn't have been on the news. Yeah,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I know it would. It would be like much more
- 10:31Speaker 1: critique just for being talking about and.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Who's this random key we trying to like chime in
- 10:35Speaker 4: on global events? Why do you even kre? Why don't
- 10:38Speaker 4: you focus on your own country? We got enough of
- 10:39Speaker 4: that anyway. But it was like even bitter that I
- 10:42Speaker 4: felt safe doing it because no one knew who I was.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean gossip girl for smart kind.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Of people could find me out, but it was quite
- 10:49Speaker 4: a nice They just didn't care. They only cared about
- 10:51Speaker 4: the news, and I loved that. And then I also
- 10:53Speaker 4: love the Internet because so many people just they have
- 10:58Speaker 4: to just go online and doom scroll and then they
- 11:00Speaker 4: feel really helpless. But it's like, if I'm going online
- 11:03Speaker 4: and scrolling, I can do something about it. I never
- 11:06Speaker 4: have to feel helpless because I'm like, oh my god,
- 11:08Speaker 4: let me teach people about that, let me show you that.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Let me like go write a newsletter explaining this. And
- 11:13Speaker 4: so I just think I've set it up in a
- 11:15Speaker 4: way where like my job is a fucking privilege because
- 11:17Speaker 4: I don't get depressed by the news because I can
- 11:20Speaker 4: do something. I always say, like my job is to
- 11:22Speaker 4: give people the news without giving them the blues. So
- 11:25Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm going to show you this. But if
- 11:26Speaker 4: we're all depressed about it, like no change is ever
- 11:29Speaker 4: gonna happen. So let's put some Mary Styles. Let's put
- 11:32Speaker 4: some like formula one. It's like, be actual humans.
- 11:35Speaker 5: I don't know, I just ows met Harry Styles.
- 11:37Speaker 3: No, yeah, direction, I'll show you the pick later.
- 11:41Speaker 4: I'm like, I hate you now.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Now you have one a competition.
- 11:44Speaker 3: No, how old were you?
- 11:46Speaker 4: I was twenty one, it was four, Okay, that's still
- 11:48Speaker 4: a good age, like they could have fallen in line
- 11:51Speaker 4: age and because everyone else was like thirteen and we
- 11:54Speaker 4: were all the same age, and they blocked yeah, oh yeah,
- 11:59Speaker 4: so I.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Was giving the look.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Yeah, she said, we're on if you want to be
- 12:04Speaker 1: no security, Yeah cheap, And.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Harry is giving her a kiss on the cheek.
- 12:10Speaker 4: That's like I used to make like thenipulations of him kissing.
- 12:17Speaker 3: One of the best moments of my life. We do
- 12:19Speaker 3: love you and the content that you make because of
- 12:21Speaker 3: the way that you do present it, and we do
- 12:23Speaker 3: love like the trojan horse of the Harry Styles and
- 12:27Speaker 3: that you also still cover like seemingly frivolous culture moments,
- 12:33Speaker 3: which is so funny because it's guaranteed that every single
- 12:36Speaker 3: time you post something about Harry Styles, you'll get a
- 12:38Speaker 3: comment saying this isn't she you care about?
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 12:41Speaker 4: Em so funny because I'm just like, hey, do you
- 12:44Speaker 4: think that was original? Do you think I haven't heard
- 12:46Speaker 4: that for the past like.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Eight years exactly, Like at least come up with something unique.
- 12:51Speaker 3: But what would you say to those people? And people
- 12:55Speaker 3: especially who think that female fandoms are frivolous and silly.
- 12:59Speaker 4: From the original TI I said to Rbian Loving, like
- 13:01Speaker 4: we should start you care about and it should be
- 13:03Speaker 4: a mixed bag. It's never changed because I'm like, if
- 13:07Speaker 4: you want just hard news, there are a bazillion places
- 13:12Speaker 4: you can go and get that. Like, I'm not making
- 13:14Speaker 4: you be here, my darling. You don't have to be here.
- 13:17Speaker 4: You can go to BBC if you want news. That's
- 13:22Speaker 4: also a little bit funny, and it's like, although there's
- 13:25Speaker 4: gonna be like hot guys popping up and hot women
- 13:27Speaker 4: popping up, like you can be here. It's safe, it's
- 13:29Speaker 4: for you. And then also just like we are humans
- 13:34Speaker 4: and I don't know about you guys, but it's like
- 13:36Speaker 4: I'm not just interested in only one thing ever, It's
- 13:39Speaker 4: like I'm interested in so many different things. It's like
- 13:42Speaker 4: very human to have so many different interests. So our
- 13:46Speaker 4: like pay rag content or whatever should feel like very
- 13:49Speaker 4: human because it's like we're not just constantly talking about
- 13:52Speaker 4: like this awful shit happening in the world all the time.
- 13:56Speaker 4: It's like, yeah, this awful shit happening, but there's also
- 13:59Speaker 4: good stuff happening and it's also like this is going
- 14:01Speaker 4: to give your brain a break, because again, if we're
- 14:04Speaker 4: all just depressed all the time, change can't happen.
- 14:06Speaker 5: I think that's what really draws people too.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Shit you should care about is it does feel like
- 14:12Speaker 1: a human is.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Not a corporation.
- 14:15Speaker 1: It feels like a friend that's helping you like navigate
- 14:19Speaker 1: and being like this is happening.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Also, this is happening.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Because it's just me that does like it should feel
- 14:24Speaker 4: like a friend because it's genuinely me just being like
- 14:28Speaker 4: this is really fucked up. Guys, Like I'm not like
- 14:30Speaker 4: framing stuff. I'm not like trying to persuade people like
- 14:34Speaker 4: or I'll.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Be like what do I think of a mind of
- 14:37Speaker 1: a media corporation being like.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Yes, and like this is the spin and this is
- 14:44Speaker 4: the angle.
- 14:44Speaker 5: What's their angle?
- 14:45Speaker 4: Yeah, the angle is that's fuck Like we all know that.
- 14:49Speaker 4: And also if you don't believe that's fucked you should
- 14:51Speaker 4: just unfollow, Like I don't care. Instagram doesn't pay me anything,
- 14:55Speaker 4: like I I don't even love being on Instagram, like
- 14:58Speaker 4: the newsletters where I love being So I'm like, if
- 15:01Speaker 4: you don't want to follow you, yeah.
- 15:04Speaker 3: You have free will.
- 15:05Speaker 5: We're not the police. It's our favorite new quote. Yeah,
- 15:08Speaker 5: whenever you know, we we post something and someone's like,
- 15:11Speaker 5: but I don't like it, I'm not your tops.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you're good like it.
- 15:19Speaker 4: And it's also just like not everything on the internet
- 15:21Speaker 4: is for.
- 15:22Speaker 5: You, And it's like what to make?
- 15:27Speaker 3: Is spaghetti?
- 15:28Speaker 5: Bollinating for under ten dollars? Goes, but I don't like pasta?
- 15:31Speaker 5: How do we make it? Without it?
- 15:33Speaker 4: The algorithms because they're so tailored to us now our
- 15:36Speaker 4: brains have gone everything I see needs to be for me.
- 15:40Speaker 4: It's called the water about me effect. And then as
- 15:42Speaker 4: soon as as soon as you see immediately and it's
- 15:47Speaker 4: because I use that.
- 15:48Speaker 5: All what about the effect?
- 15:51Speaker 4: Because it's like, we see something and if it's not
- 15:53Speaker 4: about us. We've been so trained to think that everything
- 15:56Speaker 4: we see is meant to be for us that we're like, hmmm,
- 16:00Speaker 4: what about me? And all of this it's like, it's
- 16:02Speaker 4: not bad.
- 16:03Speaker 5: It's not about you.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And I also think maybe taking yourself out of that
- 16:07Speaker 1: will potentially make news a little bit and the internet
- 16:10Speaker 1: a little bit less overwhelming as well. How do you
- 16:14Speaker 1: personally avoid compassion fatigue when you care so much about
- 16:19Speaker 1: everything that you end up caring about nothing.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Okay, I think it takes a very certain person to
- 16:25Speaker 4: be able to do this job, because I get this
- 16:27Speaker 4: question a lot. It's actually the same reason that like
- 16:30Speaker 4: maybe I would be a good therapist. It like doesn't
- 16:34Speaker 4: come home with me and keep me up at night.
- 16:35Speaker 4: And I think that's because I feel like I'm doing
- 16:38Speaker 4: something about it, Like I do. Feel like people that
- 16:40Speaker 4: get compassion fatigue are like people that are consuming, consuming, consuming,
- 16:44Speaker 4: and then just feel so powerless. But I just am
- 16:49Speaker 4: like I'm a really big like believe it and like
- 16:53Speaker 4: do what you can with what you have, yeah, and
- 16:56Speaker 4: like that should always make you feel like you're doing enough,
- 16:58Speaker 4: like donate what you can. But if you don't have
- 17:01Speaker 4: enough to donate, share this, and if you don't enough
- 17:04Speaker 4: to share that, like I don't know, just go and
- 17:07Speaker 4: research it. I just think, Yeah, I never find that
- 17:10Speaker 4: I have compassion fatigue because I have room to do
- 17:14Speaker 4: the job. And I'm like, yeah, but when I've been
- 17:17Speaker 4: through like harder times in my life where i haven't
- 17:20Speaker 4: been like medicated properly for mental health stuff, then I
- 17:24Speaker 4: get fatigued because I'm not ready to take on anything else.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Now I'm like exhorted it. I'm like, I can do
- 17:30Speaker 4: this job. This job is made for me.
- 17:33Speaker 1: What are some easy and affordable ways that people can
- 17:36Speaker 1: feel like they're doing something if they have compassion fatigue
- 17:39Speaker 1: from the news cycle or the internet.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Oh okay, this is kind of a hard one. But
- 17:43Speaker 4: it's like being brave enough to like talk to your
- 17:46Speaker 4: racist uncle at like dinner, at the dinner table like that.
- 17:49Speaker 4: That's kind of a brave one. But I do think
- 17:52Speaker 4: sometimes it feels good to just like if you have
- 17:54Speaker 4: nowhere else to let it out, and there's someone that's
- 17:57Speaker 4: been really racist. Sometimes there's no gitting through to them,
- 18:00Speaker 4: but if you can just like gently prove your point,
- 18:03Speaker 4: it like costs nothing. But sometimes that's texting on the emotion.
- 18:08Speaker 1: I like that you even said before even just researching it, Yeah,
- 18:11Speaker 1: we live so then the new story is a headline. Yeah,
- 18:15Speaker 1: so like even just researching it further, looking into petitions,
- 18:18Speaker 1: yeah yeah.
- 18:19Speaker 4: And like I just don't think anyone should feel bad
- 18:22Speaker 4: for their way of caring, do you know what I mean.
- 18:26Speaker 4: It's like the world is hard on everyone, and as
- 18:31Speaker 4: I keep saying, just nohere, no one gets anywhere. If
- 18:33Speaker 4: like we're making ourselves broke or we're making ourselves depressed.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, even following like Instagram accounts that will keep
- 18:41Speaker 3: you more informedouts still doing something and talking to your
- 18:43Speaker 3: friends about it.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I write a sub stack and you can pay to
- 18:46Speaker 4: receive it, but it's also free because I don't want
- 18:48Speaker 4: young people to be left out of the news because
- 18:51Speaker 4: I can't afford. It's like against what I do. But
- 18:54Speaker 4: I always say, like liking and searing and all that
- 18:57Speaker 4: is a way of caring, because then you're meaning that
- 19:01Speaker 4: I can keep doing my job because more people will
- 19:04Speaker 4: see the stuff.
- 19:04Speaker 5: And yeah, you know this.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Was Princess No Princess of New Zealand. No, no, no, no.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Honestly, I also wanted to talk about your book quickly
- 19:18Speaker 3: because in the final chapter, which I love, which is
- 19:22Speaker 3: let Me Live, Let Me Live, Yeah, you're open by
- 19:24Speaker 3: discussing how to create a life that actually makes you
- 19:27Speaker 3: want to put your phone down? So what do you
- 19:29Speaker 3: prioritize in your life that makes you want to log
- 19:33Speaker 3: off and put your phone down?
- 19:34Speaker 4: Well, as we discussed earlier, I lived with seven people.
- 19:37Speaker 4: It's really easy for me to not be on my phone.
- 19:40Speaker 4: I live in like Wellington and New Zealand, it's like
- 19:43Speaker 4: a really small city. It almost doesn't feel like a
- 19:45Speaker 4: city because I'm not a city girl. I'm right by
- 19:48Speaker 4: the ocean. I have an e bike, and I'm just
- 19:51Speaker 4: obsessed with Like when you're on a bike, you literally
- 19:53Speaker 4: cannot be doing anything else. If I'm on the bike,
- 19:56Speaker 4: I'm not thinking about the world. I love with so
- 19:58Speaker 4: many people that if I want a distraction from my
- 20:00Speaker 4: and I always have it. I love reading, and I
- 20:02Speaker 4: just like, weirdly, I'm just not that addicted to my phone.
- 20:06Speaker 5: That's crazy.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Why not, because like you were so on top of it.
- 20:10Speaker 4: I know, I even find it crazy. And people always
- 20:13Speaker 4: ask this, and it's like I love TikTok so much.
- 20:16Speaker 4: I love like getting it at my bed at night.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I'm scrolling on TikTok, but I'm like, I don't get
- 20:22Speaker 4: into like spiral, like you don't scroll. But I think
- 20:27Speaker 4: it's because I may have fatigued myself of that. From
- 20:30Speaker 4: twenty twenty to twenty twenty two, I was so like
- 20:32Speaker 4: obsessed with the job and building it into a business.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I actually saw the worst parts of the Internet in
- 20:38Speaker 4: twenty twenty. I recon because that was fucked, Like everything
- 20:41Speaker 4: was crazy.
- 20:42Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you gotta go through it.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I have it.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:44Speaker 4: And then I think because I wrote a book, it
- 20:46Speaker 4: was really like, let me remove myself from it, and
- 20:49Speaker 4: now I write the newsletter, which is my I feel
- 20:51Speaker 4: like I've moved more into like a writer than a
- 20:54Speaker 4: like content creator.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Which a friend who is going through that at the moment,
- 20:58Speaker 1: she's like, you know what, like short form just doesn't
- 21:01Speaker 1: feel my passion, Like I'm just not meant to make it,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and I feel like it's going against like my inner soul.
- 21:09Speaker 5: And this week she launched like a substack and I
- 21:11Speaker 5: was like, I.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Yew, Whereas I'm still like writing a book fucking killed
- 21:15Speaker 4: me because long form a long project and long form
- 21:18Speaker 4: content that is not my soul. Yeah, but even the
- 21:21Speaker 4: news that it's still like short form. But it's like
- 21:23Speaker 4: I'm actually getting to write. I'm not meant to be
- 21:25Speaker 4: making in for graphics. I'm meant to be like writing
- 21:28Speaker 4: about the news.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Okay, so you've created an empire helping people identify shit
- 21:34Speaker 1: they should care about. But we're curious, what's something that
- 21:39Speaker 1: you used to care about but have since realized you
- 21:42Speaker 1: don't really give a shit about it that much anymore.
- 21:45Speaker 4: This might be controversial actually being like so pc online
- 21:50Speaker 4: that you're having to cave at everything you say. I
- 21:53Speaker 4: don't give a shit about that anymore, because I really
- 21:56Speaker 4: do think like having to caveat your self being like, hey,
- 22:01Speaker 4: I'm about to say this, but you know my values
- 22:04Speaker 4: are you know I'm a good person and you know
- 22:05Speaker 4: I'm intending as well. That ruins writing, like having to
- 22:09Speaker 4: constantly be like.
- 22:11Speaker 5: I don't mean it that way.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't mean it. Yeah, Because the Internet is
- 22:14Speaker 4: built basically it incentivizes people to take everything you say
- 22:18Speaker 4: in the worst way possible because it's built on engagement, right.
- 22:21Speaker 4: If you have to caveat everything you say, it really
- 22:24Speaker 4: does take away from a lot of the messages, especially
- 22:28Speaker 4: when the people you're writing to know your intentions.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:31Speaker 4: I actually felt that when I was writing the book,
- 22:32Speaker 4: because I was like, I want to be fucking honest
- 22:35Speaker 4: in this book.
- 22:36Speaker 3: And you can't edit the book. No, it's not like
- 22:39Speaker 3: a post. You can't take it down, you can't edit it,
- 22:41Speaker 3: you can't revise it. Yeah, you can't update the caption.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Yeah. And I was like, but I want this to
- 22:47Speaker 4: be honest. I want it to be good reading, and
- 22:48Speaker 4: I want to talk about the realities of living online
- 22:50Speaker 4: and things like that, and I don't want to have
- 22:52Speaker 4: to put a caveat at the top being like, by
- 22:55Speaker 4: the way, I love my job. It's a privilege to
- 22:56Speaker 4: be online. I know that, Like I'm living so many
- 22:59Speaker 4: people's dreams. I want to just be like, I worked hard.
- 23:02Speaker 4: It was really hard. I still love it. But you
- 23:04Speaker 4: know so, I think I don't give a shit about
- 23:06Speaker 4: being so like scared to say stuff now.
- 23:08Speaker 5: I love that.
- 23:09Speaker 1: The reason I was just talking on my phone was
- 23:11Speaker 1: because I wanted to find this quote from.
- 23:13Speaker 5: Dolly Oldson's book.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that's amazing, and I feel like it really encompasses
- 23:17Speaker 1: as well what you were saying, and it's it is
- 23:20Speaker 1: futile and knackering to try and make all your tiny
- 23:23Speaker 1: choices representative of your moral compass. Then beat yourself up
- 23:27Speaker 1: when this plan inevitably fails. Yes, feminists can get wax,
- 23:31Speaker 1: priests can swear, vegetarians can wear leather shoes. Do as
- 23:35Speaker 1: much good as you can. The weighty representation of the
- 23:38Speaker 1: world cannot rest on every decision you make.
- 23:41Speaker 4: I mean, obviously dollars, but it is it's just when
- 23:48Speaker 4: people know that they know where your values lie, Like
- 23:51Speaker 4: you can see where my values, like, like eight years
- 23:54Speaker 4: of content can show you that. So you pecking apart
- 23:57Speaker 4: one thing I've seen just to feel some power in
- 23:59Speaker 4: a world, Like it's very hard for individuals to feel power.
- 24:02Speaker 4: I understand it.
- 24:03Speaker 1: But someone called my work chat GPT because I got
- 24:07Speaker 1: a date wrong for the bridgeton.
- 24:09Speaker 5: They were said twenty ninth of February, which is really
- 24:12Speaker 5: funny because it doesn't exist.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Yeah, loll cht GPT at work and I was like, actually,
- 24:17Speaker 1: that's the most human fucking era I've ever seen about life,
- 24:21Speaker 1: because I'm an idiot who doesn't proofread.
- 24:23Speaker 4: They were Yeah, and also we love a low stakes
- 24:27Speaker 4: era because it reminds people that were human. Yeah. I
- 24:30Speaker 4: love making typos because I'm like you guys can see,
- 24:32Speaker 4: I write a newsletter every day and I've never had
- 24:34Speaker 4: an editor, and I've.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Got them this far.
- 24:37Speaker 5: My editor is sound.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Yeah, we have a game we really want to play
- 24:40Speaker 1: with you, so sour kick us off.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Yes, So we absolutely love your mundane polls. Oh okay,
- 24:46Speaker 3: it is one of our absolute favorite pieces of content.
- 24:49Speaker 3: So we wanted to run through some of our favorite
- 24:52Speaker 3: mundane polls that you've done. But we never get to
- 24:54Speaker 3: hear your perspective.
- 24:56Speaker 4: So can I just tell you something about the mundaye
- 24:59Speaker 4: poles becau to what we were just talking about, how
- 25:01Speaker 4: people love to be angry in the comments sections. I
- 25:04Speaker 4: made the mundane polls to give people somewhere to argue
- 25:08Speaker 4: that like wasn't going to hurt anyone's feelings. It's so
- 25:11Speaker 4: funny because it's like, if you want to be angry online,
- 25:14Speaker 4: let's do it in a wait that's not going to
- 25:15Speaker 4: hurt people's feelings.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Literally like wrap them in cot more and you guys
- 25:19Speaker 3: play over here. But that's smart. We're going to run
- 25:22Speaker 3: through some of our favorite mundane poles and now we're
- 25:24Speaker 3: going to get your hot takes. Okay, quit fire. So
- 25:27Speaker 3: first one, is it for fuck sake, for fuck's sake,
- 25:34Speaker 3: for fuck's sake with an apostrophe in between the K
- 25:37Speaker 3: and the s, or for fuck sakes?
- 25:40Speaker 4: The third one and my humble opinion for fuck's sake
- 25:45Speaker 4: with the apostrophe like when I say it's like for
- 25:48Speaker 4: fuck's sake.
- 25:49Speaker 5: Because it fuck owns it?
- 25:50Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'm doing number three. I think I think
- 25:53Speaker 3: I agree with that. Yeah, I think I'd be a
- 25:55Speaker 3: number two girls. Okay, next one, how do you pronounce
- 25:58Speaker 3: tuna tuna? Or when I was little, it was tuna
- 26:02Speaker 3: because that's what my parents said. But then as I
- 26:03Speaker 3: went to high school, I think I got social licenses
- 26:06Speaker 3: saying tuna.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Nona girl.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Did you go on an American high school?
- 26:10Speaker 1: No?
- 26:10Speaker 4: I just think like tuna. I think maybe one person
- 26:14Speaker 4: once would have made fun of me for saying tuna, and.
- 26:16Speaker 5: Then that'll stick with you.
- 26:18Speaker 3: That'll happen. What do you use o tuna?
- 26:20Speaker 5: Tuna?
- 26:22Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 26:22Speaker 5: Okay?
- 26:23Speaker 1: Do you face the shower or have your back to
- 26:27Speaker 1: the shower?
- 26:27Speaker 4: I face the shower, and I have a theory. It's
- 26:30Speaker 4: like if you're a productive shower, like, I'm not in
- 26:33Speaker 4: there to relax. I'm in there because I need to
- 26:36Speaker 4: get in, get it done, get it out. I got
- 26:39Speaker 4: shit to do.
- 26:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree, I'm a face of shower. What do
- 26:42Speaker 5: you I feel like?
- 26:43Speaker 3: I spin around?
- 26:44Speaker 4: I feel like, yeah, if you're washing your hair out,
- 26:48Speaker 4: obviously you spin around wash it out. But mostly I'm
- 26:51Speaker 4: just facing that shower.
- 26:52Speaker 5: Agree, come on washing my back.
- 26:53Speaker 3: When I'm there, I'm running out change.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I can handle a hotter temperature when i'm facing it
- 26:59Speaker 1: versus on the I turn around, I'm like, oh, that's
- 27:01Speaker 1: too interesting.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe it's the spinal called the nerves. Okay, and finally,
- 27:07Speaker 3: what came first, the chicken or the egg?
- 27:09Speaker 4: It's a fox question.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Say you asked it?
- 27:13Speaker 4: It's so funny, no wonder those are the most famous
- 27:16Speaker 4: question in the world. What are you guys?
- 27:17Speaker 5: Like?
- 27:17Speaker 4: It might be the egg?
- 27:18Speaker 5: I think it's it's the egg for sure.
- 27:20Speaker 3: And the results of your pole were almost fifty fifty split.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Like it was so even I couldn't believe it because crazy.
- 27:26Speaker 4: It's the egg.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Well, if we want to be annoying and break it
- 27:29Speaker 1: down by thoughts, then it would be from evolution. Then
- 27:33Speaker 1: it would always have come from an egg slowly over time.
- 27:37Speaker 5: Yeah, there's this thing that chickens are closely related.
- 27:39Speaker 1: To crocodiles and dinosaurs. Some Tyrannosaurus rex that broke it down. Ye,
- 27:44Speaker 1: chicken came from that egg?
- 27:45Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, okay, cool, we're all in a grants.
- 27:48Speaker 1: What's your favorite thing you've ever learned from your Mondane poles?
- 27:52Speaker 4: Okay, it's not actually the answer of a mondaye pole.
- 27:54Speaker 4: It's that it is like funny, and I love everyone
- 27:57Speaker 4: that's deemed me, but it is that everyone thinks are
- 28:02Speaker 4: the only person that dms us DMS me like secret
- 28:06Speaker 4: third option this, or you need to add a third
- 28:09Speaker 4: option this, and it's like, yes, a thousand other people
- 28:11Speaker 4: have said that, but it's not a good poll if
- 28:13Speaker 4: you're putting so many options that everyone can just press
- 28:16Speaker 4: other like, yeah, I want you to make a decision.
- 28:19Speaker 4: It's so funny me and my beast. For an Abby
- 28:21Speaker 4: who does all the designs, she will be like, Lucy,
- 28:23Speaker 4: you have no idea. How many people think are the
- 28:25Speaker 4: only ones that said third option this. Someone will have
- 28:29Speaker 4: responded to a mundane part saying something like third option
- 28:32Speaker 4: this or I would say this, and then later down
- 28:35Speaker 4: the track they've replied to like five of them, and
- 28:37Speaker 4: then down the track they're like, I can't fucking believe
- 28:39Speaker 4: you're posting about this new story. You are such a
- 28:42Speaker 4: life blah blah blah bah blah. And it's like you
- 28:43Speaker 4: love and they're like, yeah, it's so funny. And then
- 28:49Speaker 4: if you reply I don't know if you guys find
- 28:51Speaker 4: this too. If you reply being like, oh my god,
- 28:53Speaker 4: my darling, you do not have to be here, they'll
- 28:54Speaker 4: switch up and they'll be like, no, I love you
- 28:56Speaker 4: so much, like I'm sorry, like and I'm like, you
- 28:58Speaker 4: forget there's a human actually on the other side of this.
- 29:01Speaker 4: That's why I like sometimes commenting back to haters, because
- 29:04Speaker 4: then they will switch it up and they will be like, no,
- 29:07Speaker 4: I'm sorry, I actually love you. It was just this
- 29:09Speaker 4: one thing.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:10Speaker 5: My favorite replies what an odd thing to say?
- 29:12Speaker 4: Yes? Or if someone makes it, makes it like misogynistic joking,
- 29:16Speaker 4: get it? Can you explain that to me? And then
- 29:18Speaker 4: when they have to explain it, they're.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Like, oh, like I'm an awful person. Yeah, I'm here,
- 29:24Speaker 3: I've got a mirror going yeah.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it's literally don't understand. Can you please explain that one?
- 29:29Speaker 2: All right?
- 29:29Speaker 1: So I do have two more final questions for you
- 29:32Speaker 1: about another one Ceely Gillipop, and then the final one
- 29:35Speaker 1: cool in our Feels. What is your favorite internet pop
- 29:40Speaker 1: culture moment? You can only pick one, but you are
- 29:43Speaker 1: allowed to have a close runner up.
- 29:44Speaker 4: I've got two that immediately come to my head. When
- 29:46Speaker 4: everyone thought Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine, like the
- 29:50Speaker 4: amount of like New Zealand news outlets that wanted my
- 29:52Speaker 4: take on there, I was like, no, guys, I'm not
- 29:54Speaker 4: wasting my This bigg of thing's happening, but that's funny.
- 29:57Speaker 4: The sickert one is have you have you guys ever
- 29:58Speaker 4: seen the meme of the gay little Monkey at the
- 30:00Speaker 4: Apple Store? Okay, just look it up everyone listening. Just
- 30:04Speaker 4: it's just it's not even a pop pop track moment,
- 30:06Speaker 4: and people dress up as it for Halloween, like I
- 30:08Speaker 4: think a lot of the queer community and the stage
- 30:11Speaker 4: with the bag on its shoulder. I need you to say,
- 30:14Speaker 4: it's just an image. It's just there. It's just a
- 30:17Speaker 4: gay little monkey. It's just a kid that's being like
- 30:19Speaker 4: real love that I don't know why, and people dresses
- 30:22Speaker 4: it for Halloween. That's I tried to include that. The
- 30:28Speaker 4: Guardian once got me to do like a round up
- 30:29Speaker 4: of my favorite memes and I did tin and that
- 30:33Speaker 4: was the only one that they were like, we cannot be.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:37Speaker 4: I was like, well, luckily I have my own media platform.
- 30:42Speaker 5: One today immediately, what's yours?
- 30:44Speaker 3: The first thing that popped into my head was when
- 30:47Speaker 3: Harry Styles was at the gym and accidentally posted a
- 30:49Speaker 3: selfie of him wearing a one Direction T shirt and
- 30:52Speaker 3: he met it for his Close Friends story.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Yeah, and that actually spurred me to start a should
- 30:58Speaker 4: care about close friends story that pays newsletter subscribers get
- 31:01Speaker 4: excess too, And I use that as like the if
- 31:04Speaker 4: Harry Styles can do it, so can we. Like so
- 31:06Speaker 4: he does actually teaching me summer. Yeah, that's such a
- 31:09Speaker 4: great one.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I loved that moment.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Yeah, my favorite to this day will be and forever
- 31:17Speaker 1: always Tom Holland's Umbrella Lips.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Oh, yes, that is.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Do you know what whenever I'm sad, Tom Holland's Umbrella Lipsinc.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Whenever I'm happy, Tom Holland's Umbrella lip Sinc. Whenever I
- 31:30Speaker 1: just need a good vibe. Tom Holland's Umbrella Lipsinc. That is,
- 31:33Speaker 1: without doubt. When the rain comes down, He's like, let
- 31:37Speaker 1: the rain, but and then the sparks come, no splashing.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I've never been so attracted. Yeah, dressed as Rhianna in
- 31:47Speaker 1: my entire life. Like that is hands down my favorite
- 31:52Speaker 1: Internet moment.
- 31:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going home to watch that right now because
- 31:55Speaker 4: I am addicted to that as well.
- 31:57Speaker 5: It's so it.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Never gets old.
- 32:00Speaker 4: It's amazing.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good one. I love that. Okay, well
- 32:04Speaker 3: I almost feel like, how can we top that? But
- 32:06Speaker 3: we have to wrap up with a very important question,
- 32:09Speaker 3: and what is your biggest life lesson on your journey
- 32:11Speaker 3: so far.
- 32:13Speaker 4: This is so easy. Don't kill the part of you
- 32:16Speaker 4: that's cringe, killed the part that cringes. I didn't make
- 32:20Speaker 4: it oump.
- 32:22Speaker 5: I literally just got goosebump.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Yeah, but don't you think it's like because so many
- 32:26Speaker 4: people want to know like the recipe to going viral
- 32:29Speaker 4: or like like how to get famous or whatever, and
- 32:33Speaker 4: I'm like, the first thing is that, like, you cannot
- 32:36Speaker 4: be afraid to be seen, and even if that's because
- 32:38Speaker 4: I wasn't like seen, but it's your writing and things
- 32:41Speaker 4: like that. Do not be afraid to just put yourself
- 32:43Speaker 4: out there. Who gives a fuck if you really want this,
- 32:45Speaker 4: to keep your cringe up and put the part of
- 32:47Speaker 4: you that cringes down, because it's just like, people love
- 32:51Speaker 4: a weird girl. It's the right. I love a weird girl,
- 32:58Speaker 4: and I just think, like, yeah, kill the part of
- 33:00Speaker 4: you that cringes.
- 33:01Speaker 3: That is amazing and what an incredible place to leave
- 33:04Speaker 3: us on the episode. Thank you so much, Lucy for
- 33:07Speaker 3: coming on the show.
