- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. The Opposition has no knowledge of what
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Upper Churchill deal, set to be announced this afternoon
- 0:07Speaker 1: at quarter to two, looks like. But the addition of
- 0:10Speaker 1: a fifteen percent rebate on electricity bills has raised questions
- 0:14Speaker 1: about what concessions Newfoundland and Labrador might have made. Opposition
- 0:19Speaker 1: Energy critic Fred Hutton says leaked information on a rebate
- 0:22Speaker 1: leads to questions about what may have been given up
- 0:25Speaker 1: in the negotiation process.
- 0:27Speaker 2: The leaks that come out aren't going to be any
- 0:29Speaker 2: of the bad things that would be noted by reporters
- 0:32Speaker 2: or by opposition that may be questionable. It would be
- 0:36Speaker 2: the good stuff, like a fifteen percent reduction in your
- 0:39Speaker 2: electricity bill. Everybody would want that. My question, like right
- 0:44Speaker 2: off the bat, would be, is this because of the
- 0:46Speaker 2: federal government's involvement? Is this why Tony Wakem will Wakem
- 0:49Speaker 2: will not do a referendum. He hasn't spoken about that
- 0:52Speaker 2: at all, but he was adamant in the beginning that
- 0:54Speaker 2: you know, there was going to be a referendum on
- 0:56Speaker 2: any deal that was reached.
- 0:57Speaker 1: The Journal de Quebec is reporting that Newfoundland and Labrador
- 1:01Speaker 1: will be able to sell surplus power to the US,
- 1:04Speaker 1: but that hydro Quebec remains the essential intermediary. That means
- 1:08Speaker 1: that NL will only negotiate with hydro Quebec and will
- 1:12Speaker 1: have to pay them the cost of transporting electricity to
- 1:15Speaker 1: foreign markets. Hutton says the opposition has long said it
- 1:19Speaker 1: will support any deal that is as good as the
- 1:21Speaker 1: previous MoU or better. Stats Canada says the annual rate
- 1:26Speaker 1: of inflation accelerated to three percent in July as drivers
- 1:31Speaker 1: were once again paying more to fill up their tanks.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Michelle Zadigian reports.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Inflation had cooled to two point eight percent in June
- 1:39Speaker 3: as the US and Iran worked toward a peace agreement,
- 1:42Speaker 3: but fresh conflict in the Gulf region in July pushed
- 1:46Speaker 3: global gas prices higher again Stackans as consumers were also
- 1:50Speaker 3: paying more for airfares and travel tours last month as
- 1:54Speaker 3: the energy shock made jet fuel more expensive and the
- 1:57Speaker 3: FIFA World Cup drove up demand to US destinytions. Canadians
- 2:01Speaker 3: found some relief in the grocery aisles, though, as annual
- 2:04Speaker 3: price hikes on food bought from the store cooled sharply
- 2:08Speaker 3: to three point one percent in July from three point
- 2:11Speaker 3: nine percent previously. Michelle Zadekian the Canadian Press.
- 2:15Speaker 1: The rate in Newfoundland and Labrador was four point two
- 2:18Speaker 1: percent compared to three point eight in June. In Saint
- 2:21Speaker 1: John's it was four point one compared to three point
- 2:25Speaker 1: seven the month before. New research shows the beneficial relationship
- 2:30Speaker 1: between young teens struggling with anxiety and dog ownership. Here's
- 2:34Speaker 1: ABC's Sherry Preston.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Walking a dog at you outside and gives you exercise.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Feeding a dog helps you learn responsibility and empathy for
- 2:41Speaker 4: another creature, and just being with the dog in a
- 2:43Speaker 4: positive environment can help teenagers struggling with social anxiety. Researchers
- 2:48Speaker 4: at Tufts University studied more than five hundred kids between
- 2:51Speaker 4: the ages of thirteen and seventeen struggling with high levels
- 2:54Speaker 4: of stress and anxiety. They found that dog companionship was
- 2:57Speaker 4: associated with more adaptive coping skills, solving, and positive thinking.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Should be noted that relationship quality, i e. A positive
- 3:04Speaker 4: relationship with that dog, not just owning one, is what's beneficial.
- 3:08Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
