- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this episode number three fifty two,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and today in the show, the Nine Fingered Wonder and
- 0:23Speaker 1: I are doing some social distance socializing, simply kicking back
- 0:28Speaker 1: and catching up, telling hunting, fishing, and foraging stories, and
- 0:32Speaker 1: maybe even chatting with a surprise special guest. All right,
- 0:41Speaker 1: welcome to another episode of the Wired to Hunt podcast,
- 0:45Speaker 1: brought to you by on x UM. I feel well.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Before I talk about how I feel, I got Dan
- 0:55Speaker 1: Dan Johnson on the other side. I'm glad you can
- 0:58Speaker 1: be here. Dan. I need I need some Dan Johnson
- 1:01Speaker 1: in my life today. Well that's good. Why why do
- 1:04Speaker 1: you need me in your life? Because I feel like
- 1:08Speaker 1: I'm in a rut? Oh or just this just this
- 1:13Speaker 1: endless cycle of the same monotonous thing. And this is
- 1:19Speaker 1: this is probably not unique to me right now, I
- 1:21Speaker 1: gotta believe that a lot of people are kind of
- 1:22Speaker 1: feeling the same way. Are you feeling this at all?
- 1:25Speaker 1: A little bit but not too terribly bad. I mean,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I still get to go outside a lot. I've been
- 1:31Speaker 1: mushroom hunting, I've been doing a little turkey hunting, and
- 1:35Speaker 1: uh so that kind of throws a break up into everything.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And um, I can't say that that's been the same
- 1:43Speaker 1: feeling for me. So that's kind of good. That is good.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And I've been doing the same things you've been doing.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I have been much from hunting and turkey hunting and
- 1:51Speaker 1: getting outside still some. But I don't know. It's it's
- 1:55Speaker 1: like a very it's a very domesticated set of of things.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Maybe or maybe it's just because uh kid life mixed
- 2:06Speaker 1: with quarantine life has produced like a dampening effect on
- 2:10Speaker 1: the excitement how to get out of some of these things,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'm not sure. Um, but it's definitely like I just
- 2:16Speaker 1: had this feeling. Ah, I describe it just kind of
- 2:23Speaker 1: this latent like wanderlust, like I just need to get
- 2:25Speaker 1: out needed, just like I need that other And right now,
- 2:30Speaker 1: it's just get up, do the routine, feed the kids,
- 2:35Speaker 1: get your work done. Uh you get done with work,
- 2:39Speaker 1: you clean the house, put the kids to bed. Then
- 2:42Speaker 1: you're so tired. You finished off the last bit of
- 2:44Speaker 1: work and then you pass out. Um and because of
- 2:48Speaker 1: all this weird stuff going on. There's not like that
- 2:50Speaker 1: thing necessarily the big thing to look forward to as
- 2:53Speaker 1: much or I don't know, that's just that's just the
- 2:57Speaker 1: weird place that that I find myself. I can't complain
- 3:02Speaker 1: too much, but I will tell you this, I can
- 3:05Speaker 1: agree with you when it's time to like, for me,
- 3:09Speaker 1: it's time to start moving around. And I don't just
- 3:11Speaker 1: mean driving a mile into the country to go look
- 3:15Speaker 1: from mushrooms. I mean I need to do something big.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I need to make a move. So, uh today, actually
- 3:22Speaker 1: me and my wife rented a cabin up in Northeast Iowa,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and so next weekend we're going on a little two
- 3:27Speaker 1: day adventure with the kids up in Northeast Iowa to
- 3:31Speaker 1: do some fishing, some hiking, um and just chill up
- 3:35Speaker 1: in a different place. Very cool. Yeah, that's the kind
- 3:38Speaker 1: of that's the kind of thing that we haven't been
- 3:39Speaker 1: able to do for like two months here now, and uh,
- 3:42Speaker 1: I think that is that is what I need. We
- 3:45Speaker 1: are Michigan. I don't know how I owe you guys
- 3:49Speaker 1: have not been under the same things, but we've been
- 3:51Speaker 1: under stay at home since like March, and it's extended
- 3:56Speaker 1: through the end of May. Yeah, I was talking to
- 4:00Speaker 1: Indy May and he was telling me that even if
- 4:03Speaker 1: you own a cabin up north in along the lakes,
- 4:08Speaker 1: like a lot of people do, they're telling you you
- 4:10Speaker 1: can't do that, even to go onto your own property. Well,
- 4:14Speaker 1: they were saying that, and then about about a week ago,
- 4:17Speaker 1: about a week ago, that was lifted. So now technically,
- 4:21Speaker 1: if you have a place, you can technically go there.
- 4:27Speaker 1: People are just being discouraged to do that. They don't
- 4:29Speaker 1: want people traveling all over the state and possibly spreading
- 4:32Speaker 1: things around here and there. Um, but it's it's not
- 4:35Speaker 1: like a codified stance anymore. So I don't know, I
- 4:40Speaker 1: don't know. Man, strange times. Um, of course you want
- 4:43Speaker 1: to do the right things. But um, but it is
- 4:46Speaker 1: I think trying. It's definitely drying. Heck, parts of Iowa
- 4:51Speaker 1: are opened up again, right, Yeah, a lot a lot
- 4:54Speaker 1: of restaurants and restaurants and bars. I think some of
- 4:59Speaker 1: them are operating under a smaller I guess if you
- 5:03Speaker 1: you know, a smaller fire code, so to speak. They're
- 5:05Speaker 1: they're they're cutting there admission or however many people can
- 5:10Speaker 1: be in a building down. But my dad went out
- 5:13Speaker 1: for breakfast the other day so, but he lives in
- 5:16Speaker 1: like I live in one of Iowa's higher populated counties.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So we're still under lockdown, like no restaurants. But I
- 5:24Speaker 1: think May seventeen that's going to be lifted, so we're
- 5:29Speaker 1: gonna be back at it again here soon. It's gonna be.
- 5:32Speaker 1: It's just so weird how normal things now feel so strange,
- 5:37Speaker 1: like just going to the grocery store. Every time I
- 5:39Speaker 1: go to the grocery store, I feel like I'm in
- 5:41Speaker 1: a like a movie. It's just so weird seeing just
- 5:46Speaker 1: I don't know, life is weird right now. It's weird
- 5:49Speaker 1: because here's one thing that I've noticed. I used to
- 5:52Speaker 1: go to the grocery store or go out in public,
- 5:54Speaker 1: I would smile and say hi to people. I find
- 5:58Speaker 1: myself even walking around with my head down and just
- 6:01Speaker 1: like don't avoid, like avoid avoid, avoid, don't talk, don't
- 6:05Speaker 1: you know, don't I'm not afraid of going out into public.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I'm just afraid of interacting with people, and whether that's
- 6:12Speaker 1: through conversation or touch. I'm just like, I don't I
- 6:15Speaker 1: don't say hi to people anymore. I don't smile at
- 6:18Speaker 1: people anymore, which sounds rude, but everybody else is doing
- 6:21Speaker 1: the same thing. Very true, It's just a very strange
- 6:24Speaker 1: social dynamic and kind of this like underlying sense of
- 6:30Speaker 1: an ease. I don't know, I'm just very I just
- 6:33Speaker 1: I find myself over and over, like so many times
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'll just look at my look at Kylie and be
- 6:37Speaker 1: like I hate this, Like I just hate this thing,
- 6:40Speaker 1: like worrying about I don't know, our groceries or something,
- 6:43Speaker 1: or do we do we need to worry about this?
- 6:44Speaker 1: Do we not need to worry abouts? Or worry about
- 6:46Speaker 1: like when can we see the grandparents again? When should we?
- 6:49Speaker 1: When should we not? Or you know, is it okay
- 6:52Speaker 1: to still go turkey honey and be six ft away
- 6:54Speaker 1: from someone? Is that okay? Um? Like all these things
- 6:57Speaker 1: now that we have to think about um, And I
- 7:00Speaker 1: realized it's it's a luxury to complain about it because
- 7:04Speaker 1: I'm healthy and we're not dealing with the serious, serious ramifications.
- 7:08Speaker 1: So I don't want to come off as if I'm
- 7:10Speaker 1: you know, complaining too much. But yeah, there's still there's
- 7:14Speaker 1: a silver lining mark, which is which is that in
- 7:19Speaker 1: the grand scheme of things? Now here is what I've read. Okay,
- 7:23Speaker 1: according to some source, I don't. I don't. I don't
- 7:26Speaker 1: even know what where I read it at. But hunting
- 7:30Speaker 1: and fishing license are up nearly three million people so
- 7:38Speaker 1: far in two thousand and nineteen, or excuse me, two
- 7:41Speaker 1: thousand and twenty. So that's very interesting. I have seen
- 7:44Speaker 1: different state I've seen different state updates mentioning that their
- 7:48Speaker 1: sales are way up, and so I think that's awesome.
- 7:52Speaker 1: But I wonder, yeah, I wonder, is this just because
- 7:57Speaker 1: of the same thing that I did, which was early
- 8:01Speaker 1: this in the spring, when the lockdown stuff first started.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Some states started saying, hey, you know what, we're shutting
- 8:08Speaker 1: down our nonresident hunting seasons were shutting down this hunting season. Um,
- 8:12Speaker 1: if you already bought a license, you can still go,
- 8:15Speaker 1: but no new licenses are being sold. So that happened
- 8:19Speaker 1: in a bunch of states, and so as soon as
- 8:20Speaker 1: I found that out, I was like, well, I better
- 8:21Speaker 1: snatch up a license. So I bought a deer tag
- 8:24Speaker 1: in one of the out of state places I want
- 8:25Speaker 1: to go right away, even though I wouldn't have bought
- 8:28Speaker 1: it probably until August. Instead, I bought it in April
- 8:32Speaker 1: just to make sure I could still get one. Um,
- 8:34Speaker 1: do you think maybe that's part of it. Yeah, I
- 8:37Speaker 1: think there's gonna be some There's gonna be some new people,
- 8:41Speaker 1: right like, oh, man, I can't do anything, might as
- 8:42Speaker 1: well do what I used to do and go fishing,
- 8:45Speaker 1: right or things like that. But I have a feeling
- 8:48Speaker 1: that people are probably just doing what you did and
- 8:50Speaker 1: buying earlier. So we'll have to check back up on
- 8:54Speaker 1: this at the end of the year to see if
- 8:55Speaker 1: there was actually a three million person increase in hunting
- 9:01Speaker 1: fishing licenses as opposed to people just deciding, Hey, well,
- 9:05Speaker 1: I can't I can't go hunting now, but I can't
- 9:08Speaker 1: go fishing, so I'm gonna buy my you know, I'm
- 9:10Speaker 1: gonna buy my combo tag or I'm gonna buy my
- 9:13Speaker 1: hunting license like four months earlier than I normally do. Yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 1: but hey, if even you know, a hundred thousand of
- 9:19Speaker 1: those are new people, that's that's great. Take them. That
- 9:22Speaker 1: is that is a great silver lining. It is a
- 9:24Speaker 1: one of those times I find myself often being like, man,
- 9:27Speaker 1: it's a good time to be a hunter. Glad that
- 9:29Speaker 1: I've got a full freezer, Glad that as things get
- 9:33Speaker 1: increasingly different, we're at least set on that front. So yeah, man, um,
- 9:41Speaker 1: strange strange times. But what I what I thought we
- 9:46Speaker 1: could do today is is is socialized. Simply socialized, Simply socialized, Dan,
- 9:55Speaker 1: because that's something I don't get to do anymore. We
- 9:58Speaker 1: don't get to do it anymore. So sitting down for
- 10:02Speaker 1: coffee and talking to your buddy isn't a thing anybody's
- 10:05Speaker 1: doing right now, or at least most people aren't doing
- 10:07Speaker 1: right now. Or sitting down and drinking a beer on
- 10:09Speaker 1: a Friday afternoon together and talking and catching up about
- 10:12Speaker 1: what we've been doing, that's like really unique right now. Um,
- 10:16Speaker 1: So let's socialize and do that and catch up on
- 10:22Speaker 1: what is going on with Dan Johnson and Mark Kenyon
- 10:24Speaker 1: and our our outdoor world. Um, because there's turkey hunting
- 10:29Speaker 1: to discuss, there's mushroom hunting to discuss, there's back forty stuff,
- 10:32Speaker 1: there's fishing to discuss. I've got some outdoor kid questions
- 10:36Speaker 1: to discuss, um, and then a few listener questions too
- 10:41Speaker 1: that I've got here that we could touch on if
- 10:43Speaker 1: we have time to UM. But yeah, I think we
- 10:46Speaker 1: just need like a laid back catch up socialize with
- 10:49Speaker 1: all our friends out there, you, me and the rest
- 10:51Speaker 1: of the listeners. Yeah, well I'm down. I'm down for that.
- 10:55Speaker 1: You know, we're we're pretty good at bullshit and I, um,
- 10:59Speaker 1: but if you're looking for me to kick this off,
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you something that I'm pretty excited about
- 11:04Speaker 1: that I also did today and it's I started. This
- 11:09Speaker 1: is crazy, but I actually started preparing for my season. Yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 1: That's quite quit the proactive approach. Yep. So do you
- 11:23Speaker 1: want me to fill you in on kind of what
- 11:24Speaker 1: what I've been doing for that. No, I'd rather just
- 11:27Speaker 1: let's table that one until No. Yes, tell me, tell me,
- 11:34Speaker 1: don't ask a question. I'm just gonna start, tell me more,
- 11:40Speaker 1: tell me more. So as you know. UM, I think
- 11:45Speaker 1: we've talked about this before, but I have a pretty
- 11:48Speaker 1: decent collection of preference points for Wyoming, for antelope, for elk,
- 11:54Speaker 1: and then I have um some some deer points as well.
- 11:58Speaker 1: But I'm thinking that my plan is I turned forty
- 12:03Speaker 1: in November, which means that next September I will be
- 12:06Speaker 1: forty and going on an elk hunt in Wyoming. My
- 12:10Speaker 1: plan is to cash in my uh some of my
- 12:16Speaker 1: preference points. So I'm gonna be sitting with about seven
- 12:18Speaker 1: preference points. And that should get me a really good
- 12:20Speaker 1: unit in UH in Wyoming. And so today I bought
- 12:26Speaker 1: a have you ever heard of go hunt? Yeah? Yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 1: So I bought a membership to go hunt and I
- 12:34Speaker 1: started the research process. Uh, what units I can get
- 12:39Speaker 1: with seven points? What the draw odds are, what you know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: all that stuff. Started looking at not necessarily maps yet,
- 12:46Speaker 1: just the data behind specific units. UM. And I did
- 12:51Speaker 1: that for a little bit for antelope and a little
- 12:53Speaker 1: bit for deer, but mostly for for elk units, and uh,
- 12:57Speaker 1: I think based you know, in a very a short
- 13:00Speaker 1: period of time, I was able to whittle down to
- 13:04Speaker 1: a you know, to maybe four units or five units
- 13:09Speaker 1: that I can start doing more research into, like access
- 13:13Speaker 1: and and taking a look on maps and stuff. So, um,
- 13:17Speaker 1: I've started that process and it's kind of exciting. Did
- 13:20Speaker 1: the dreaming, the dreaming and the anticipation that is such
- 13:24Speaker 1: such a good part of it. Um, what part I know,
- 13:28Speaker 1: you don't want to give away too much details, but
- 13:30Speaker 1: what part of the state are you are most of
- 13:32Speaker 1: these and anyone given part of the state that you're
- 13:34Speaker 1: looking at or is it kind of spread all over?
- 13:36Speaker 1: So we're gonna be in north central or northwestern like
- 13:41Speaker 1: southeast of Yellowstone. Nice. Yeah, dude, that that area is incredible.
- 13:47Speaker 1: It's a little sketchy though, oh yeah, because you get
- 13:50Speaker 1: the grids, a couple of them, uh, and in there
- 13:54Speaker 1: they say this is a Grizzly Bearer unit, so playing accordingly.
- 13:58Speaker 1: So I don't know if I am ready to do
- 14:04Speaker 1: a grizzly bear hunt by myself, I would definitely go
- 14:08Speaker 1: with someone who has more experience and more seasons with
- 14:12Speaker 1: Grizzly Bears under their belt. But if it's just me
- 14:16Speaker 1: and another rookie you know what I mean by that
- 14:19Speaker 1: is a hunting with Grizzly bears rookie, then I probably
- 14:23Speaker 1: won't select that that unit just for that period. Yeah,
- 14:27Speaker 1: just throws a whole different element into everything. Oh, it
- 14:30Speaker 1: definitely does. Definitely does my um. I just bought an
- 14:35Speaker 1: ELK tag for this fall um in Idaho again, and
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm in a grizzly unit for the first time, and
- 14:43Speaker 1: so I'll be I'll definitely be thinking about that a
- 14:45Speaker 1: little bit more. But but yeah, it's the one. The
- 14:49Speaker 1: downside is, of course, you have to be very very
- 14:51Speaker 1: careful in a lot of ways. The upside is that
- 14:54Speaker 1: a lot of people think what you just thought there
- 14:57Speaker 1: and so don't choose that unity so you get slightly
- 15:01Speaker 1: less pressured animals, more opportunity that kind of thing. Um.
- 15:05Speaker 1: But that that southeast area of Yellowstone is stunning country. Yeah,
- 15:11Speaker 1: I mean, just as far as the landscape I've I've
- 15:14Speaker 1: done some backpacking and hiking in there. It is some
- 15:16Speaker 1: of the coolest country in the world. It is so cool. Um. Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And while I'm out there, you know, like, so this
- 15:23Speaker 1: this whole this whole plan, right is for my fortieth
- 15:27Speaker 1: year to be this epic year full of hunting where
- 15:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna probably try to fit in another Western hunt
- 15:36Speaker 1: out there as well. I'm probably gonna do my South
- 15:38Speaker 1: Dakota hunt that'll happen in October. I might try to
- 15:42Speaker 1: do you know, I'll do an elk hunt in September,
- 15:46Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna probably I might try to do
- 15:48Speaker 1: it antelope archery hunt early September or late August. Even
- 15:53Speaker 1: so if I can spread it out evenly, I can
- 15:56Speaker 1: make my my footprint away from homes seem less. I
- 16:00Speaker 1: don't know what the word I'm looking for is, but
- 16:02Speaker 1: like it just won't seem like I'm gone. Yeah, not
- 16:05Speaker 1: as impactful, not as impactful. Right, so I'm gonna do
- 16:10Speaker 1: that whole thing. That's amazing. I I'm curious about one thing.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Did you do you know this? I can't remember off
- 16:16Speaker 1: the top of my head. What's Wyoming's party application deal?
- 16:20Speaker 1: Do they allow party applications? Do you know? I think
- 16:24Speaker 1: they might? You know, I think they might. I didn't
- 16:27Speaker 1: look into any of that yet. Um, but yeah, I'm
- 16:32Speaker 1: I don't think they did. I don't know, I don't
- 16:36Speaker 1: I can't say for certain. So I asked because I'm
- 16:38Speaker 1: not gonna I'm not gonna invite myself on your trip.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I don't want to do that to you. But if
- 16:42Speaker 1: you need another guy, and I know we've exchanged a
- 16:44Speaker 1: few texts, like very high level on this, but but
- 16:47Speaker 1: the Wyoming elk thing is is high on my list
- 16:50Speaker 1: of of hunts I want to do. So if you see,
- 16:54Speaker 1: that's the thing is I think I only know three,
- 16:56Speaker 1: you only have three? Yeah, So the question started applying
- 16:59Speaker 1: before me. Did you like forget a couple of days?
- 17:01Speaker 1: I forget I forgot some years. And so that's the problem.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So if the party application, if if if you end
- 17:09Speaker 1: up needing me, um wanting me to come along, if
- 17:14Speaker 1: it worked out. The party thing would be. The question
- 17:17Speaker 1: would be, is if we apply as a party with
- 17:18Speaker 1: that default to the highest point owner or the lowest
- 17:21Speaker 1: point owner, because I wouldn't want to hurt your chances,
- 17:23Speaker 1: but if it would help my chances not hurt yours,
- 17:25Speaker 1: that'd be a good thing. So I don't I don't
- 17:26Speaker 1: know how it works. I can't remember. Yeah, definitely something
- 17:30Speaker 1: to look into. I look at look at us, Look
- 17:33Speaker 1: at us smart We're making were socializing and making making plans.
- 17:39Speaker 1: That's you know, that's the thing that you miss out
- 17:41Speaker 1: on when you can't sit and have a beer coffee
- 17:43Speaker 1: with your buddies. And because these things just don't come
- 17:46Speaker 1: up when you're off running around doing your life, it's
- 17:48Speaker 1: hard to like just talk through stuff. You finally get
- 17:50Speaker 1: on the phone, you finally sit down and you're talking
- 17:52Speaker 1: and thinking, oh we should do that. Um yeah, God,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I feel like such a little child that's been locked
- 17:59Speaker 1: in my room all day. I feel have been grounded
- 18:01Speaker 1: for months and I just want to go and play.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Yeah right, right, Um, so then let's say this all
- 18:07Speaker 1: works out right. I got a buddy who lives in
- 18:10Speaker 1: Colorado who told me he will literally come up and
- 18:14Speaker 1: call for us. And that's all he'll do is he'll
- 18:16Speaker 1: be a he'll pack it, help Pep pack out, and
- 18:19Speaker 1: he'll call for us. Got the pros? Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 1: the Wyoming, the Wyoming elk is is a trip of
- 18:32Speaker 1: a lifetime for a lot of people. That'd be pretty awesome.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Um what so? So that's one is the elk, the antelope,
- 18:40Speaker 1: and the mule deer. And then this year you're still
- 18:44Speaker 1: doing Michigan whitetail and all your plans still sounding like
- 18:48Speaker 1: they're gonna be staying the same or has this uh
- 18:52Speaker 1: that will change? Is okay? So I was gonna do um,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I think I told you this. My buddy um uh
- 19:02Speaker 1: New York. He came last year with me on the
- 19:05Speaker 1: South Dakota mule their hunt. He wasn't gonna come this year.
- 19:08Speaker 1: They had to change some Montana elk hunt plans to
- 19:11Speaker 1: next year. So he's gonna he's probably not going on
- 19:16Speaker 1: as as Montana hunt, so he's gonna come with me.
- 19:18Speaker 1: He's already purchased his license and got the tag and
- 19:21Speaker 1: everything for the South Dakota hunt again. So I don't
- 19:25Speaker 1: know what we're gonna be shifting if we're gonna push
- 19:28Speaker 1: if we're gonna push it back another week, our our
- 19:33Speaker 1: South Dakota Elk or Mulier hunt back a week, or
- 19:37Speaker 1: if I'm gonna just flip and go muleer hunting opening,
- 19:41Speaker 1: you know, right away October one, and then just come
- 19:44Speaker 1: up mid till late October for my Michigan hunt. So
- 19:48Speaker 1: I'm still planning on do it. I just have. It's
- 19:50Speaker 1: just it's just a matter of scheduling it right now,
- 19:54Speaker 1: all right, as long as as long as it's scheduling
- 19:56Speaker 1: and not shifting entirely to New Year's Yeah, I'll probably
- 20:02Speaker 1: get a death threat if I back out in Michigan
- 20:04Speaker 1: this year. That's the best thing about getting someone to
- 20:06Speaker 1: commit to something on air on the podcast. You really
- 20:09Speaker 1: liked it. Um, that's uh, that's exciting stuff. So what
- 20:16Speaker 1: about the term what're you gonna say? Yeah, I was
- 20:18Speaker 1: gonna say, so you bought your Idaho. Um, you're a
- 20:22Speaker 1: tag for Idaho already for elk. Yes, So I bought
- 20:25Speaker 1: an Idaho white tail and Idaho elk tag for this year.
- 20:28Speaker 1: So that's that's new for me. I've never white tail
- 20:31Speaker 1: hunt in Idaho, so I'm gonna do that for the
- 20:32Speaker 1: first time. Um, because I couldn't I drew. I applied
- 20:36Speaker 1: for a Montana white Tail tag and I didn't draw
- 20:39Speaker 1: for the second year in a row. So that was
- 20:42Speaker 1: surprising and disappointing. So I thought, I'll try somewhere different, Idaho.
- 20:47Speaker 1: We're gonna give that a shot. So yeah, I'm excited
- 20:51Speaker 1: about that in a new elk. You and I'm gonna
- 20:52Speaker 1: try somewhere different than when where you and I went. Um,
- 20:56Speaker 1: so excited to check out a new area. I was.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I was talking to a buddy who um he hunts
- 21:03Speaker 1: eastern uh you know, in that quote unquote Grizzly zone
- 21:07Speaker 1: of Idaho, and he said that the unit that we
- 21:10Speaker 1: hunted is now considered Grizzly Bear territory. They've expanded into
- 21:15Speaker 1: that unit. Yeah, I've I've I've thought and wondered that
- 21:18Speaker 1: they either were there and really light numbers. It would
- 21:21Speaker 1: be at any any time now because it's right there.
- 21:23Speaker 1: You know, it's close. There's there's a small highway kind
- 21:28Speaker 1: of that separate separates that mountain range from another mountain
- 21:31Speaker 1: range that's obviously Grizzly territories. So yeah, gorgeous country, but
- 21:36Speaker 1: they're in there. But yeah, so Western I'll get my
- 21:41Speaker 1: Western hunting in September, and then October a bunch of
- 21:45Speaker 1: Michigan stuff. November a bunch of Michigan stuff. December, maybe
- 21:50Speaker 1: do New York. Um, but who knows, I don't know.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I sure hope that all this stuff doesn't impact things
- 21:56Speaker 1: in the fall. Again, Yeah, I can't see it. I
- 22:00Speaker 1: can't see it. I mean, number one, hunting. The only
- 22:05Speaker 1: way I can see this affecting fall is big, giant
- 22:10Speaker 1: groups of people doing something right. Whether you're an outfitter
- 22:14Speaker 1: and you have a lodge where you know everybody gathers around, right,
- 22:20Speaker 1: that may be an issue. But I don't see hunting
- 22:26Speaker 1: like me wanting to go out of state and camp
- 22:30Speaker 1: out of the back of my truck as a problem. Yeah,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I agree. I mean that's about as socially distanced and
- 22:36Speaker 1: safe as you can get it. Yeah. Uh yeah, yeah.
- 22:40Speaker 1: I hate keeping on bringing that up, but it's one
- 22:42Speaker 1: of those things that keeps on like it's not this
- 22:43Speaker 1: weird filter they have to look at everything through. Yeah, yeah, whatever,
- 22:48Speaker 1: that's what I say. I'll just cross that bridge when
- 22:50Speaker 1: I get to it, and um, if not, I guess
- 22:53Speaker 1: I'll just, I don't know, do more efficient hey, speaking officient,
- 23:00Speaker 1: speaking of fishing. I took Everett out, bought him his
- 23:03Speaker 1: first fishing pole this past weekend and took him out
- 23:07Speaker 1: and he caught his first fish. Wow, it's very cool,
- 23:11Speaker 1: very cool. You gotta kick out of it, he was.
- 23:14Speaker 1: He wasn't really he really he got a kick out
- 23:17Speaker 1: of it. But he'd be reel it in and then
- 23:19Speaker 1: he'd stop and just be like pointing at it. I'm like,
- 23:21Speaker 1: real it in, real it real, and then he kind
- 23:23Speaker 1: of reel for a while and then he kind of
- 23:24Speaker 1: looked at Daddy and he's like, Daddy, do you know
- 23:27Speaker 1: you gotta do it? So there's there's some of that
- 23:30Speaker 1: figuring out stuff. Mean, he's only too but but he
- 23:32Speaker 1: reeled in. I think we got like, I don't know,
- 23:35Speaker 1: six or seven probably he reeled in a few of them,
- 23:38Speaker 1: and I was touching him. He wanted to kiss one,
- 23:41Speaker 1: and uh, all that good stuff. So it was it
- 23:45Speaker 1: was cool. It was a great milestone for us. I
- 23:50Speaker 1: can remember my daughter's first fish. Now. Of course I
- 23:53Speaker 1: had to cast it for her, but she was able
- 23:57Speaker 1: to reel it in when the bomber went under, and
- 23:59Speaker 1: oh man was the smile on her face and I
- 24:03Speaker 1: have a picture of it is something and it's it's
- 24:06Speaker 1: framed around here somewhere. I haven't hung it up yet,
- 24:08Speaker 1: but it is. It is. It's one of those moments
- 24:12Speaker 1: where you know that as a father, you've done something
- 24:16Speaker 1: right and and you've made her happy through something that
- 24:20Speaker 1: you love to do too. And I got I was
- 24:25Speaker 1: so jacked. I was like, it was almost like if
- 24:27Speaker 1: she would have shot her first deer, right, So if
- 24:29Speaker 1: I'm acting like that with a blue gill, and what
- 24:33Speaker 1: is going to happen which she actually shoots her first deer,
- 24:35Speaker 1: I'll probably pass out. Well, you know what's funny is
- 24:37Speaker 1: the one not the one cool thing, but one of
- 24:40Speaker 1: the cool things about doing this stuff with little kids
- 24:43Speaker 1: is it re excites you about simple things that didn't
- 24:46Speaker 1: used to be exciting. So a little like catching bluegills
- 24:50Speaker 1: two years ago would not have been high on my list,
- 24:52Speaker 1: But right now that sounds like a hell of a
- 24:54Speaker 1: good time for this weekend. It's so much fun because
- 24:57Speaker 1: because Everett is getting such a blast out of it,
- 24:59Speaker 1: or just walking around and picking up turkey feathers doesn't
- 25:03Speaker 1: sound a whole lot of fun, but right now, ever
- 25:05Speaker 1: would geek out or he literally, he's his new thing.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Last week. He's so into turkeys right now. I took
- 25:12Speaker 1: out my turkey decoys and put him out in the
- 25:13Speaker 1: yard and then had him come walk out, and he
- 25:15Speaker 1: just freaked out when I saw the turkeys all over,
- 25:18Speaker 1: and then when he realized he could carry them around,
- 25:20Speaker 1: then it was just all done. So he wanted to
- 25:22Speaker 1: carry his turkey everywhere he went all day. He brought
- 25:25Speaker 1: the turkey to dinner, and I don't know, I probably
- 25:29Speaker 1: made a mistake and letting him bring the turkey to dinner,
- 25:31Speaker 1: but he brought the turkey decoy and put in the
- 25:33Speaker 1: chair next to him and fed the turkey decoy while
- 25:35Speaker 1: we're eating. But then when I finally had to take
- 25:38Speaker 1: it away, I was like, I'm not gonna let him
- 25:39Speaker 1: sleep with it. I didn't clean it off all that well,
- 25:41Speaker 1: so I started thinking, gosh, maybe I think maybe I
- 25:43Speaker 1: should have checked in the k nooks and cranes and
- 25:44Speaker 1: make sure there wasn't something in there because I was
- 25:46Speaker 1: sitting outside. Um, so I was like, I would better
- 25:49Speaker 1: take this away. And then when I did that, of course,
- 25:52Speaker 1: epic meltdown because I took away his turkey. Um, I'm
- 25:56Speaker 1: constantly making the mistake of giving him things that wouldn't
- 26:00Speaker 1: have and then I happen to take him away. Uh,
- 26:04Speaker 1: that's that's being a dad. But yeah, man, it's just
- 26:07Speaker 1: like going for walks in the woods are such a
- 26:09Speaker 1: huge deal right now. He gets all he wants to
- 26:11Speaker 1: do is go for a walk, Go for a walk,
- 26:13Speaker 1: go for a walking and get out there. He's got
- 26:14Speaker 1: to have his turkey calls. He's just he's like, turkey call,
- 26:17Speaker 1: Turkey call Dad, Turkey call and get him his turkey calls.
- 26:20Speaker 1: And then he just wants to walk through the fields,
- 26:22Speaker 1: clucking away on his slate call. And that's that's a
- 26:26Speaker 1: great day for him, and that's that's a great day
- 26:28Speaker 1: for me right now. So I definitely know what I'm
- 26:32Speaker 1: getting my youngest son for Christmas this year, and that
- 26:36Speaker 1: is I'm gonna go out to a gravel road. I'm
- 26:38Speaker 1: gonna get a five gallon bucket and I'm just gonna
- 26:40Speaker 1: fill it with gravel and then I'm gonna take him
- 26:44Speaker 1: to anybody of water, a creek or a river or
- 26:49Speaker 1: a lake and let him throw rocks and watch the splash.
- 26:53Speaker 1: The kid just takes a rock, he'll throw it. He'll
- 26:57Speaker 1: watch the splash and then he'll go that's what he
- 27:02Speaker 1: loves to do. And I'm just like, you know what,
- 27:04Speaker 1: I wish life was literally that simple, right, just getting
- 27:10Speaker 1: a kick out of throwing rocks. Man, it's good. I
- 27:13Speaker 1: guess those those kids are good for us in that
- 27:15Speaker 1: kind of way, right, simple things. Yeah, that was funny.
- 27:19Speaker 1: At the end of our fishing trip last week, the
- 27:21Speaker 1: same thing. I was trying to catch more fish, and
- 27:24Speaker 1: ever started going to rocks and just started throwing rocks
- 27:26Speaker 1: every time I was there's some little girl, right, there's
- 27:29Speaker 1: some fish, and then he's chuck a rocket. Yeah, so
- 27:34Speaker 1: turkeys fish. Have you been turkey hunting? I've been what
- 27:40Speaker 1: four four times? How's it? Good times? How was it?
- 27:45Speaker 1: First day I brought my daughter. We were out by
- 27:48Speaker 1: seven thirty in the morning, and then we drove around
- 27:51Speaker 1: and did some cool things. Uh. The next morning I
- 27:54Speaker 1: went out by myself. Uh. They were gobbling in the
- 27:57Speaker 1: trees and then the second they hit the ground they
- 27:59Speaker 1: were done. And then my wife called and says Mac
- 28:02Speaker 1: wants to come out. So I went came back into town,
- 28:04Speaker 1: picked him up. Uh, and then we just walked around
- 28:07Speaker 1: public land and I hated him. The slate call and
- 28:10Speaker 1: just said, okay, buddy, here you go try to make
- 28:12Speaker 1: some noise. And uh, you know, I didn't even bring
- 28:16Speaker 1: my boat with me. I just we just kind of
- 28:18Speaker 1: walked around. That lasted for a little bit until the
- 28:22Speaker 1: snacks were done. And then then that following weekend I
- 28:25Speaker 1: went out, Uh, same scenario, dude. They were gobbling in
- 28:29Speaker 1: the trees and then they hit the ground, go quiet.
- 28:34Speaker 1: And then the next time I didn't even hear gobble.
- 28:38Speaker 1: And the entire morning I walked around, you know, I
- 28:40Speaker 1: went on some public ground. I stopped at a couple
- 28:44Speaker 1: uh parking lots because there was guys coming out of
- 28:46Speaker 1: the timber and I was talking to them a little
- 28:48Speaker 1: bit just to see, you know, are you hearing anything.
- 28:51Speaker 1: They're like, no, man, it's been a kind of a
- 28:53Speaker 1: weird year. And whether it's low numbers or maybe the weather,
- 28:57Speaker 1: I don't know, but it's just they're going bananas like
- 29:01Speaker 1: they usually do. Has it been just cold and wet
- 29:03Speaker 1: and credited by you guys too, you know, lower temperatures
- 29:08Speaker 1: than normal, but not so low. I mean we had
- 29:13Speaker 1: one day where it snowed, right, but other than that,
- 29:17Speaker 1: and and tonight is supposed to be low in the twenties.
- 29:22Speaker 1: But other than that, I don't feel like it's been
- 29:25Speaker 1: a crazy cool. It hasn't been hot by any means,
- 29:30Speaker 1: but it hasn't been crazy cool. I feel like this
- 29:33Speaker 1: has been one of the just lousiest spring weather periods
- 29:37Speaker 1: we've had here in Michigan in a lot of years.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Just we've had one nice day that I was out
- 29:43Speaker 1: in shirt sleeves or short short sleeves all spring. I
- 29:46Speaker 1: can thing maybe two. Um, and it's freaking halfway through
- 29:50Speaker 1: May almost Yeah, it's killing me. I feel like I
- 29:54Speaker 1: live in Canada or Alaska or something, right, So I'm
- 29:58Speaker 1: I don't I'm gonna go out and get another shot
- 30:01Speaker 1: this this weekend? Um, I think tomorrow or yet today's
- 30:05Speaker 1: Saturday or Friday. So tomorrow morning I'm gonna try to
- 30:09Speaker 1: go out and get her done. But man, I'm not.
- 30:13Speaker 1: You know, I bought my bow tag because the shot
- 30:19Speaker 1: there's four shotgun seasons in Iowa. And I brought my
- 30:21Speaker 1: bow tag because I didn't know when I was going
- 30:24Speaker 1: to be able to get out, so I might as
- 30:26Speaker 1: well use a weapon that I can hunt more days. Right,
- 30:30Speaker 1: So I brought my bought my bow tag, and you know,
- 30:35Speaker 1: obviously I would have changed, you know, it would it
- 30:38Speaker 1: kind of limits me from going crazy running gun style
- 30:41Speaker 1: like I would if I had a shotgun. But um,
- 30:44Speaker 1: they just they didn't come to the decoys. They're they're quiet,
- 30:48Speaker 1: and then I don't know, I made the decision instead
- 30:51Speaker 1: of going after them, to just kind of go back
- 30:53Speaker 1: home and do other things. Have you done? Have you
- 30:56Speaker 1: bow hunted for turkeys other years? There's a usually shotgun
- 30:59Speaker 1: mo us to the time, a shotgun only because we
- 31:02Speaker 1: have our turkey camp every year and we do it
- 31:06Speaker 1: the second season in Iowa and it's a four or
- 31:08Speaker 1: five day it's a five day window, so we do
- 31:12Speaker 1: it because you know, it allows us to be more mobile. Yeah,
- 31:17Speaker 1: definitely helps, that's for sure. Yeah. So I don't know
- 31:20Speaker 1: how about you? What have you even been out? So
- 31:23Speaker 1: I went from my first hunt today actually, so today
- 31:27Speaker 1: was the first real hunt I have gotten out, but
- 31:30Speaker 1: just without a weapon. Um, because what we're trying to
- 31:33Speaker 1: do is we're trying to film a turkey hunt in
- 31:35Speaker 1: the back forty um for the show, but we haven't
- 31:38Speaker 1: been able to do that because of all the regulations.
- 31:40Speaker 1: So we just were able to get clearance to do
- 31:44Speaker 1: it as long as it's socially distanced properly and just
- 31:48Speaker 1: do everything by the book. Um, we got the green light.
- 31:50Speaker 1: So we went out finally today with a gun for
- 31:54Speaker 1: the first time, and uh, you know, had one got
- 31:58Speaker 1: one strutting around gobbling a little bit. It was really windy,
- 32:00Speaker 1: so he couldn't hear much. Um. But he was on
- 32:04Speaker 1: one side of a hill and just would not come
- 32:06Speaker 1: the rest of the way, so he probably got him
- 32:08Speaker 1: within fifty sixty yards but could never could never see him. Yeah,
- 32:14Speaker 1: I could see him, um, But basically the only thing
- 32:18Speaker 1: I could do was work out into a wide open field.
- 32:21Speaker 1: I had a property line on one side of me.
- 32:23Speaker 1: The woods was the property line. Field was out to
- 32:26Speaker 1: They saw myself as open field and I was just
- 32:28Speaker 1: kind of stuck. Um, so we gave a shot. I
- 32:32Speaker 1: kept on trying to belly for all closer and closer
- 32:34Speaker 1: and shut up for a long time, and then gave
- 32:38Speaker 1: it to him real hard and different types of things
- 32:40Speaker 1: like that. And at one point he came like at
- 32:43Speaker 1: one point I thought it was gonna happen, like he
- 32:45Speaker 1: shut up, there's nothing, and then I kept peeking over
- 32:47Speaker 1: and then he was couldn't see anything, and there was
- 32:49Speaker 1: his back and he was slowly his head was down.
- 32:51Speaker 1: He was pecking and walking towards us, and uh, all right,
- 32:55Speaker 1: this is happening. I got set up and then he
- 32:59Speaker 1: was gone. He disappeared. So either he saw me when
- 33:02Speaker 1: I was peeking at him and I didn't realize it,
- 33:04Speaker 1: or he had just finally got bored and hopped into
- 33:06Speaker 1: the timber next to us and disappeared. I don't know,
- 33:09Speaker 1: but but you know, it's funny. I've had a bunch
- 33:12Speaker 1: of action when I wasn't trying to shoot him. I
- 33:15Speaker 1: had I've gotten a number of turkeys within range when
- 33:18Speaker 1: I wasn't actually hunting. So that's how it goes. Um,
- 33:25Speaker 1: you're right there, chief. Oh yeah, I'm sorry. I thought
- 33:29Speaker 1: I shut my volume off. No, you're good. It's funny.
- 33:36Speaker 1: It's funny Spencer. I did a podcast with Spencer a
- 33:39Speaker 1: few weeks ago, and he had a frog in his
- 33:41Speaker 1: throat the whole time, and so he coughed a lot
- 33:46Speaker 1: during the episode. But he tried to do what you
- 33:47Speaker 1: just tried to do, So he tried to shut off
- 33:49Speaker 1: his mic every time he had a cough, but it
- 33:52Speaker 1: was happening in the middle of him talking, so he
- 33:54Speaker 1: would be in the middle of a sentence and then
- 33:58Speaker 1: he would just stop talking, and then I would think
- 34:02Speaker 1: he is freight he thought he ended his phrase. So
- 34:04Speaker 1: I would start talking as if, like, you know, to
- 34:06Speaker 1: jump in on the conversation, like ask him another question,
- 34:09Speaker 1: and then he would un mute and big oh no, no no, sorry.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I just had to cough, and then he tried to
- 34:12Speaker 1: get back into him. And so throughout the whole rest
- 34:14Speaker 1: of the conversation that was going on, and I never knew, like,
- 34:17Speaker 1: am I supposed to talk now or is he just coughing?
- 34:19Speaker 1: And it was the most awkward thing because of that.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Throughout the whole thing, we were either talking over each
- 34:24Speaker 1: other or both of us not talking because we were
- 34:25Speaker 1: waiting for the other person. It was fun. I think
- 34:31Speaker 1: I was talking about the turkeys. I called in eight
- 34:33Speaker 1: jakes that came walking. I was like on the ground
- 34:36Speaker 1: at eight Jakes walked within like four ft in me.
- 34:38Speaker 1: That was really cool. Um called in one goaler I
- 34:41Speaker 1: could have shot that same day, I had another one
- 34:45Speaker 1: come in that was probably right in the edge of
- 34:48Speaker 1: my range if I wanted to shoot. So there's been
- 34:51Speaker 1: a lot of gobbling. I've been getting out a lot
- 34:53Speaker 1: of mornings and other days I've gone out with Everett
- 34:56Speaker 1: late morning, just take him out there and we would
- 34:59Speaker 1: just try to call one in just to have him
- 35:01Speaker 1: hear some gobbling and he loves that. Had birds coming
- 35:05Speaker 1: in and every time they see him moving around and spook.
- 35:09Speaker 1: So that's been something we have to address once he
- 35:13Speaker 1: actually starts hunting. Um, but I've been hearing a lot
- 35:18Speaker 1: of goblin. I go on these, you know, my morning runs,
- 35:21Speaker 1: and here in tons of them gobblin on the roosts,
- 35:24Speaker 1: of course, so no storage of hearing them. But like
- 35:28Speaker 1: you said, hearing I'm shooting was a two different things. Yeah,
- 35:32Speaker 1: are you do you get frustrated when it comes to turkey?
- 35:36Speaker 1: I mean the same amount of frustration as white tails.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Oh no, wait different, It's so much lower stakes. I feel.
- 35:45Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, you know, it's fun. We gave a shot,
- 35:48Speaker 1: didn't come together. Oh well we'll try again another time. Um,
- 35:52Speaker 1: it's the same way with me. I'm just like I'm
- 35:55Speaker 1: gonna go home. Yeah. Yeah. Today it was like we
- 35:59Speaker 1: hunted until I don't know, ten thirty or eleven, and
- 36:02Speaker 1: I thought we could keep hunting, but let's let's just
- 36:06Speaker 1: go back. I'll see the kids, help them with lunch,
- 36:08Speaker 1: get back to work, do some things, and there's something
- 36:10Speaker 1: nice about that. Just that's different sense of And I
- 36:15Speaker 1: know we've talked about this in the past. It's nice
- 36:17Speaker 1: to have that different feel because white Tail, at least
- 36:20Speaker 1: for me and I think for you most of the
- 36:22Speaker 1: time too, it's it's so intense. We're really trying to
- 36:24Speaker 1: be so buttoned up in our approach and what we're doing.
- 36:27Speaker 1: That then when it comes to turkeys, you can relax
- 36:30Speaker 1: a little bout the bummer. And I hate to go
- 36:32Speaker 1: back to this, but the bummers that usually turkey hunting
- 36:35Speaker 1: so much fun because the social aspect too, all right,
- 36:38Speaker 1: going on with buddies, turkey camp. We we have a
- 36:40Speaker 1: turkey camp here usually in the spring and my local
- 36:43Speaker 1: buddies and stuff will get together, and all that had
- 36:46Speaker 1: to be canceled and just not the same, not the same.
- 36:53Speaker 1: So is there a law because you mentioned something about filming,
- 36:56Speaker 1: like it is like social distancing, right, is you're a
- 37:00Speaker 1: guy walking around with a ruler saying, oh, you're not
- 37:04Speaker 1: six ft apart now I gotta right you fine, Like
- 37:07Speaker 1: you mentioned something about having to film and making sure
- 37:10Speaker 1: that you could do it. And get approval for it
- 37:13Speaker 1: or whatever you said. And now because you can, now
- 37:17Speaker 1: you can film, right, So I don't know. We just
- 37:20Speaker 1: had to make sure we're all buttoned up as far
- 37:22Speaker 1: as the guidelines. And you know, in Michigan's all, you know,
- 37:26Speaker 1: non essential workers are supposed to be going and doing things.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Non essential travel is it's supposed to happen. Hunting is okay. Um,
- 37:34Speaker 1: certain applications are okay. But the question was can we
- 37:36Speaker 1: film doing some of these things? So we had to
- 37:39Speaker 1: go through a bunch of legal not legal but you know,
- 37:42Speaker 1: just make sure we're doing it by the book, checking
- 37:44Speaker 1: off with the authorities, just to make sure that we're
- 37:49Speaker 1: doing the way we're since we're doing it. Yeah, so
- 37:53Speaker 1: there you go. Yeah, New World, New World were living.
- 37:59Speaker 1: But you went out mushroom hunting too, right, Yeah, trying
- 38:02Speaker 1: to do some mushroom hunting. Um, I don't know what
- 38:05Speaker 1: I'm doing. I've never really taken mushroom hunting seriously, but
- 38:08Speaker 1: this year I'm trying to. So last weekend I didn't.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I went and walked around a bunch and hit some
- 38:13Speaker 1: spots that thought looked good under dead trees and everything,
- 38:16Speaker 1: and found nothing. So went out again. It looked just
- 38:21Speaker 1: a little bit last night and found one, and then
- 38:25Speaker 1: did some more looking today and found none. So I
- 38:28Speaker 1: don't know if it's still too early here because the
- 38:30Speaker 1: cold weather or what, but I'm I'm striking out pretty
- 38:33Speaker 1: bad so far. Yeah. You you seem to do well. Yeah,
- 38:37Speaker 1: I mean I went out and I found enough for
- 38:40Speaker 1: the whole family to eat off a batch. I think
- 38:42Speaker 1: I found fifteen of them, twenty of them, which you know,
- 38:46Speaker 1: cut them in half and now you double that for
- 38:48Speaker 1: a little appetizer or part of your meal. So we
- 38:52Speaker 1: had steaks and we had no we had we had
- 38:55Speaker 1: grilled chicken and fried mushrooms. And then I went out
- 38:59Speaker 1: yesterday and found three. So I don't know. I'm I
- 39:05Speaker 1: don't do it. Like there are people out on this
- 39:07Speaker 1: public land where I've watched a guy have a YETI
- 39:10Speaker 1: cooler full of mushrooms, like this is this must be
- 39:13Speaker 1: what this guy does, and he has he has all
- 39:16Speaker 1: the places picked out, he's been doing it for years.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I remember walking up to him one time and I
- 39:21Speaker 1: just like, hey, man, um uh, mushrooms out yet And
- 39:25Speaker 1: he's like like he looked at me kind of funny,
- 39:27Speaker 1: like what are you trying to get out of me.
- 39:29Speaker 1: I'm not gonna take ship, like stay away from me.
- 39:32Speaker 1: And he's like, and I didn't notice that when I
- 39:36Speaker 1: was talking to him, and uh I, I said, uh yeah,
- 39:41Speaker 1: I got a spot over here. I found a couple.
- 39:44Speaker 1: But you know, I'm just basically trying to talk to him.
- 39:47Speaker 1: He goes, yeah, okay, all right, yeah, yeah, like not
- 39:50Speaker 1: giving me any information, really not not really talking to me,
- 39:53Speaker 1: like he's just suspicious. So why is this guy talking
- 39:56Speaker 1: to me like? I think he felt like I was
- 39:57Speaker 1: trying to get something Anyway, I turned around to walk
- 40:00Speaker 1: back to my truck, and I look in the back
- 40:02Speaker 1: of his truck and he's got three coolers, one so
- 40:06Speaker 1: full of mushrooms that he can't even shut the lid
- 40:08Speaker 1: on it. And yeah, and then there's two other ones
- 40:12Speaker 1: in there. So I didn't know if he had him
- 40:14Speaker 1: full or not. But this dude was slaying the mushrooms
- 40:18Speaker 1: and uh he I don't know. I mean, that's a
- 40:21Speaker 1: lot of mushrooms. I'm sure he was selling them, you know,
- 40:23Speaker 1: selling some of them, because I got a dude couldn't
- 40:26Speaker 1: eat that many mushrooms. You probably packed in a pretty
- 40:29Speaker 1: nice hall of cash. After that. Yeah, but I think
- 40:33Speaker 1: a morele mushroom you can get twenty two dollars a pound. Yeah,
- 40:38Speaker 1: as I understand it. You know, there is based off
- 40:40Speaker 1: demand at the time and supply or whatever. But yeah,
- 40:43Speaker 1: it sounds like you can do pretty good if it's
- 40:45Speaker 1: the right time of year or whatever. What if what
- 40:47Speaker 1: were the spots even finding them so far this year?
- 40:50Speaker 1: So coming off egg fields? Um, you know, like if
- 40:54Speaker 1: if a low spot continues into an egg field and
- 40:59Speaker 1: then it hits the timber line, and then that low
- 41:01Speaker 1: spot continues into the timber line, the soil is always
- 41:04Speaker 1: more moist in there, and it always seems to be
- 41:06Speaker 1: thicker because uh, fertilize, you're drained off. And you know,
- 41:12Speaker 1: obviously the first ten yards of any field edge is
- 41:14Speaker 1: gonna be thicker regardless, you know, just because of you know,
- 41:19Speaker 1: the sun hitting that field edge. So you know it's
- 41:21Speaker 1: gonna be thick in there. So and and what makes
- 41:24Speaker 1: this specific spot so good is not only doesn't have
- 41:27Speaker 1: that that moisture content in the soil, but it also
- 41:30Speaker 1: has like five gigantic trees that are in the process
- 41:35Speaker 1: of dying, and and they're big, old, and a lot
- 41:38Speaker 1: of the branches have fallen off of them, So it's
- 41:40Speaker 1: just like it's a wreck on the floor, and that's
- 41:42Speaker 1: where they're you know, the pheasant backs are growing in there,
- 41:45Speaker 1: the morales are growing in there, and that's where I
- 41:48Speaker 1: find them. Yeah, I saw you cooking up some pheasant
- 41:50Speaker 1: backs the other day, and yeah, I had just seen
- 41:53Speaker 1: a couple of those in the woods when I was
- 41:55Speaker 1: looking for morrel's And I thought to myself, is that
- 41:57Speaker 1: one of these peasant backs? And I wasn't sure, um,
- 42:00Speaker 1: and then I saw your Instagram story. Those tastes pretty good. Yeah,
- 42:04Speaker 1: So the bigger they are, the tougher they get. So
- 42:09Speaker 1: what I do is, if if you make a if
- 42:10Speaker 1: you make a circle with yours, let's just say your
- 42:15Speaker 1: middle finger and your thumb, that size of the mushroom
- 42:19Speaker 1: maybe the size of a baseball. Let's just say the
- 42:21Speaker 1: size of the baseball. Are the best you cut the
- 42:23Speaker 1: stems off and then you gotta it gets from the
- 42:28Speaker 1: it's a shelf mushroom, right, so from the tip all
- 42:32Speaker 1: the way to the back, and then maybe like one
- 42:35Speaker 1: third of the way back, you cut that off to
- 42:39Speaker 1: where it connects to the stem. So then you basically
- 42:41Speaker 1: have this c shape or a half circle shape, and
- 42:47Speaker 1: that is what I cube up and eat because if
- 42:49Speaker 1: you the further back from the edge you get, the
- 42:51Speaker 1: tougher it gets. But if you if you ride that
- 42:55Speaker 1: first third. If I'm making sense here, I think that
- 42:57Speaker 1: the first two thirds from the tip in, then that's
- 43:01Speaker 1: when they're chewy and you cook them and they're good. Man.
- 43:04Speaker 1: I I I chopped mine up with some onions and
- 43:09Speaker 1: and uh, you know, sautata saltata with onions and pheasant
- 43:13Speaker 1: backs and UM made an omelet out of it. That's
- 43:17Speaker 1: that's my go too. With those things. They have to
- 43:19Speaker 1: tell you what if you do it right, would even
- 43:20Speaker 1: be good with like butter and garlic pasta, It would
- 43:24Speaker 1: be good with um if you had enough of them,
- 43:27Speaker 1: maybe put them on a hamburger with you know, some
- 43:30Speaker 1: kind of cheese or something I don't know, maybe not cheese,
- 43:33Speaker 1: but like some type of chutney. If that makes sense,
- 43:38Speaker 1: you could make us. I think it would be really good. Yeah.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I need to, um, I need to go and try
- 43:43Speaker 1: to see if those are still out and if they're
- 43:46Speaker 1: decent size or not the ones that I saw the
- 43:48Speaker 1: other day. Because yeah, because now that I know what
- 43:50Speaker 1: they are, I'm intrigued. Yeah, I tell you one one
- 43:54Speaker 1: thing that I've really been interested in lately, not necessarily
- 43:58Speaker 1: just mushrooms, but other plants and animals that you can
- 44:04Speaker 1: eat in the forest. Such, it's like what, oh like
- 44:08Speaker 1: different different plants, dandelions or the first thing that come
- 44:12Speaker 1: to mind. Right, you can eat dandelion leaves like let
- 44:16Speaker 1: us I mean the ship they sell them in the store, right,
- 44:18Speaker 1: but you can go out and get them online. There's
- 44:21Speaker 1: certain types of parsnip that you can eat. So it's
- 44:25Speaker 1: just it's something to do, you know, Like I love
- 44:28Speaker 1: shed hunting, I love mushroom hunting, and what are those
- 44:30Speaker 1: two things have in common? You're looking for something, right,
- 44:34Speaker 1: So I want to look for other food sources and
- 44:40Speaker 1: you know in the woods. Yeah, I feel like right
- 44:43Speaker 1: now there's a lot of people thinking the same thing.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I mean, that's why I thought to take up mushroom
- 44:47Speaker 1: hunting the spring, because I need something to do and
- 44:49Speaker 1: finding food out there. I mean, like you just said,
- 44:52Speaker 1: it's a natural next step. It's funny you bring that
- 44:56Speaker 1: up though, because I saw someone I can't remember who
- 44:58Speaker 1: it was, someone I know on Facebook had gone and
- 45:01Speaker 1: found a bunch of dandylions and deep fried them. Have
- 45:04Speaker 1: you ever seen that? H so literally, it was like
- 45:08Speaker 1: taking a mushroom, putting it in batter and dropping the fryer,
- 45:11Speaker 1: except for he did that with dandylions, like the yellow
- 45:14Speaker 1: part of the flower, the flower dandylion flower dipped in breading,
- 45:19Speaker 1: dropped into a fryer, and then plucked out. I had
- 45:22Speaker 1: no idea what that tastes like, uh, but it was.
- 45:26Speaker 1: It seemed kind of bizarre to me. Did that person
- 45:29Speaker 1: say it was good? You know? I don't. I don't.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I don't remember tell you the truth. I'm trying to
- 45:35Speaker 1: think about, like what the caption was. I don't even
- 45:37Speaker 1: know if I read the caption. I think I was
- 45:38Speaker 1: just so taken back by the picture and like, really
- 45:41Speaker 1: they did that that? Uh, I don't even know. I
- 45:44Speaker 1: guess I should go back and try to find that
- 45:46Speaker 1: and see. Yeah, I don't know. I uh, it would
- 45:50Speaker 1: be funny if the caption was, just like I wonder
- 45:52Speaker 1: if any suckers try this, well, you know, in states
- 45:57Speaker 1: like ours, Michigan and Iowa, you up anything in the
- 46:00Speaker 1: deep fryar. It's good to go brown like brown food,
- 46:04Speaker 1: right right. I've heard that's the Midwest. You know, you
- 46:08Speaker 1: asked me the other day. I think it was what
- 46:10Speaker 1: Michigan's food like special food tradition is, and I think
- 46:13Speaker 1: it's probably probably that brown food just just just fried
- 46:17Speaker 1: it up anything. You know. Someone reached out to me
- 46:20Speaker 1: and said that smoked fish was another one that is
- 46:24Speaker 1: a Michigan food that is a good tradition, which I
- 46:27Speaker 1: that's I can agree with that. That's let smoked fish
- 46:29Speaker 1: out here is uh, let's see is Iowa see Iowa?
- 46:35Speaker 1: I mean there's there's a whole bunch of different, uh,
- 46:38Speaker 1: I guess cultures that have come to the United States
- 46:41Speaker 1: and settled. You know, like certain parts of Wisconsin have
- 46:44Speaker 1: like a huge Polish you know community, and therefore that's
- 46:48Speaker 1: why they have a lot of smoked meats, right, like
- 46:51Speaker 1: sau sausages and stuff like that. Now, Iowa is Norwegian.
- 46:56Speaker 1: There's a lot of Norwegian and a lot of German
- 46:58Speaker 1: in Iowa. I'm sure that's all over the place, you know,
- 47:01Speaker 1: in the United States. But you know, in the church
- 47:05Speaker 1: I grew up in, it was a huge Norwegian and
- 47:09Speaker 1: Swedish church. So the culture was so they had a
- 47:13Speaker 1: at every potluckt they would have ludifisc and that's like
- 47:17Speaker 1: pickled herring or something like that, pickled herring. No, it's
- 47:20Speaker 1: pickle herring and ludafisk are these two meals that they
- 47:23Speaker 1: always had at this And I was never brave enough
- 47:27Speaker 1: to try the the ludifisk. But I think I don't
- 47:33Speaker 1: think they're the same thing. But the pickled herring I tried,
- 47:37Speaker 1: and I did not, Like, Yeah, what does that taste like?
- 47:42Speaker 1: Like I don't know, just like sour fish. It's been
- 47:50Speaker 1: a while, it's been a while. It's just I described
- 47:52Speaker 1: it as not being good to eat. That's all I
- 47:55Speaker 1: need to know. I'm not gonna try. Some people love it.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I know people love it like potato chips. I've never
- 48:02Speaker 1: I've not been big into the pickled meats, pickled stuff
- 48:05Speaker 1: like pickled sausages and stuff you see people like sometimes
- 48:09Speaker 1: get a gas stations. Just not so I gotta share him.
- 48:12Speaker 1: I gotta share a college story with you. So it's
- 48:15Speaker 1: like there was we'd go to this bar called SuDS
- 48:19Speaker 1: in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Is on the on the college hill. Right,
- 48:23Speaker 1: every every bigger college has an area where there's it's
- 48:26Speaker 1: just like a higher concentration of bars, right, and one
- 48:29Speaker 1: of my buddies, like he would always get he would
- 48:32Speaker 1: always drink a little bit more than he needed to
- 48:34Speaker 1: every night, and at the end of the night, we're
- 48:37Speaker 1: just like we would just convince him to eat uh
- 48:42Speaker 1: hard boiled pickled egg with hot sauce on it, and
- 48:46Speaker 1: every time he did that, he would give in, and
- 48:48Speaker 1: then every time he would put every time. Uh that
- 48:56Speaker 1: sounds disgusting. Yeah, yeah, I mean, I like, I like
- 48:59Speaker 1: my self some pickled eggs when the time is right.
- 49:02Speaker 1: But I'm I don't think I'm gonna do it after
- 49:05Speaker 1: I chug you know, sixteen beers, okay, but what when
- 49:08Speaker 1: is the time right for a pickled egg? M I'm
- 49:12Speaker 1: gonna say maybe beer number three? Okay, So it's not
- 49:18Speaker 1: the first beer, right you you wanna you want to
- 49:20Speaker 1: enjoy your first beer, not the second beer, because I don't,
- 49:25Speaker 1: you know, I don't know, maybe I'm not quite ready yet,
- 49:27Speaker 1: and I think that the third beer is like the
- 49:31Speaker 1: perfect time. It's just like, you know what, I'm feeling,
- 49:34Speaker 1: feeling good now, feeling a little relaxed. My muscles aren't
- 49:36Speaker 1: tied anymore, my my knees are bending properly. I think
- 49:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna have a pickled egg with a little hot
- 49:42Speaker 1: sauce on it, and that's maybe some salt, salt and
- 49:45Speaker 1: pepper on it, and then there you go. I I've
- 49:50Speaker 1: never been there. I've never I've never been to that
- 49:53Speaker 1: moment on my third beer. But I'm gonna take your
- 49:54Speaker 1: word for it. Which what is your beer drinking snack?
- 49:58Speaker 1: You're not eating a meal right, Maybe maybe you've had
- 50:02Speaker 1: lunch and you're hanging with the boys and it's time.
- 50:07Speaker 1: You know, you're cracking your beers. You start you know,
- 50:09Speaker 1: you're sitting around a fire, or you get back from
- 50:12Speaker 1: a hunt and you're not time to eat yet, but
- 50:14Speaker 1: you're just starting to starting to get into the beers.
- 50:17Speaker 1: What's your snack? What? What is your beer drinking snack?
- 50:20Speaker 1: It's been too long since I've had like sitting with
- 50:23Speaker 1: the boys drinking beers. Kind of time to tell you,
- 50:25Speaker 1: But I'm I think back here, I'd probably say, like
- 50:30Speaker 1: I could throw it on some like chips, Give me
- 50:32Speaker 1: some chips and dip. Uh. If there's anything that you
- 50:36Speaker 1: could dip a chip into, I will hammer that. Give
- 50:38Speaker 1: me like a buffalo chicken dip or a chili cheese dip. Uh.
- 50:45Speaker 1: You know. I'm a sucker for spinach artichoke dip too.
- 50:47Speaker 1: I'm not too that's not too fancy for me. Um yeah,
- 50:52Speaker 1: or salsa, I mean any anything. I love a dip.
- 50:55Speaker 1: I love a dip in a chip. Yeah. Yeah. I'm
- 50:58Speaker 1: a nachos guy. I like I like me some nachos.
- 51:01Speaker 1: And it depends if you consider nachos a main course.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I personally don't consider nachos a main course, but I
- 51:07Speaker 1: have friends who would debate me otherwise. This has gotta
- 51:11Speaker 1: be our most pointless rambling episode I ever done, Dan,
- 51:16Speaker 1: I don't know what. What do you like nachos? Better?
- 51:20Speaker 1: Do you like? Just? Hey, I thought you said we
- 51:23Speaker 1: were socialized. We are socializing. This is this is great
- 51:26Speaker 1: for you and me. I just don't know if anyone
- 51:28Speaker 1: else is listening, doesn't matter, you know what, Hey, I'll
- 51:31Speaker 1: tell you what you gotta. You gotta just relax and
- 51:34Speaker 1: go with the flow, okay, and just shake it off.
- 51:38Speaker 1: I mean, what what what's gonna happen? Media or ink
- 51:40Speaker 1: is gonna call you in for a meeting and say,
- 51:42Speaker 1: all right, we've been reviewing your content, Mr Kenyan, and
- 51:44Speaker 1: it looks like you need to do less talking about nachos,
- 51:48Speaker 1: and we're talking about deer hunting strategy during the rut
- 51:51Speaker 1: because that's where the ratings are at. Dude, when you
- 51:53Speaker 1: see a phone call from me coming tomorrow or next week,
- 51:56Speaker 1: you'll know what happened. Right, Hey, Dany got time to
- 51:59Speaker 1: do a rut honey strategy and me, oh man, that's funny. Yeah, dude,
- 52:07Speaker 1: it's right, you're right, you're right. I need to relax.
- 52:10Speaker 1: It's okay, there's uh, there's probably plenty of other people
- 52:14Speaker 1: that just needed socialized too. So how long have you
- 52:18Speaker 1: how long have we been recording right now? Fifty one minutes?
- 52:21Speaker 1: One minutes. Do you think if we call further he'll answer? Uh,
- 52:26Speaker 1: he would, But I don't think I know how to
- 52:28Speaker 1: patch him in here. I mean I could put him
- 52:30Speaker 1: on speaker phone. Oh you're saying like over Skype. Yeah,
- 52:34Speaker 1: call him up and asked, just ask him what he's doing,
- 52:36Speaker 1: because that's one guy that, you know, if I had
- 52:38Speaker 1: more time in my day and I could just chat
- 52:40Speaker 1: with one person. Obviously there's a long list of people
- 52:43Speaker 1: before him, but it would it would probably I would
- 52:46Speaker 1: want to just check in with further and see what
- 52:48Speaker 1: he's doing. You know. I don't disagree with you. He's
- 52:52Speaker 1: a good guy to check in with. I don't think
- 52:54Speaker 1: he's gonna answer, but I'm I'm trying to calm right now.
- 52:57Speaker 1: We'll see if Josh is available. He's he's uh, he's
- 53:01Speaker 1: staying busy, cutie may stuff. As far as I know, um,
- 53:05Speaker 1: you know need they need their support right now, as
- 53:08Speaker 1: you can imagine. Um, a lot of conservation organizations are
- 53:12Speaker 1: you know, without a funding source, so kind of tough
- 53:16Speaker 1: times for a lot of folks like that. So Josh
- 53:19Speaker 1: is definitely working hard to try to help there. Um. Hello,
- 53:24Speaker 1: it's answer. Answer. It's unbelievable, oh man. But from the
- 53:33Speaker 1: shittiest podcast ever to the greatest podcast ever, Welcome to
- 53:38Speaker 1: the wire Dum Podcast. Josh oh Man. Maybe I shouldn't
- 53:43Speaker 1: have answered, Hey, you're live, buddy, You're live. You are live.
- 53:49Speaker 1: How are you doing? Yeah, I just got back from
- 53:53Speaker 1: a little walk with the family, So it's good. Good
- 53:58Speaker 1: gut got way out in the in the carrier and
- 54:01Speaker 1: got like a couple of miles in it's like a
- 54:03Speaker 1: modified heavy pack hike. Oh, you're doing some training, aren't you.
- 54:08Speaker 1: I'm just just trying to get myself in some quarantine shape.
- 54:12Speaker 1: That's good. Did you have you put on a quarantine
- 54:15Speaker 1: fifteen or anything that you're working off or is this
- 54:18Speaker 1: have you've been good and on your best behavior this
- 54:20Speaker 1: whole time? I'm actually like, um on the quarantine like
- 54:25Speaker 1: down fifteen. I'm finally losing all this baby weight. Whoa.
- 54:30Speaker 1: So I don't know what we're doing. Maybe I think
- 54:33Speaker 1: it's just because I'm not eating out as much on
- 54:34Speaker 1: the road and all that kind of stuff. So it's
- 54:37Speaker 1: called stressed buddy. Yeah, well, yeah, that's probably a big
- 54:40Speaker 1: part of it. I gained twelve pounds in the first
- 54:44Speaker 1: five or six weeks of the lockdown, and it's because
- 54:48Speaker 1: I was in charge of grocery shopping now, so literally
- 54:53Speaker 1: I would go to the grocery store and because it's
- 54:55Speaker 1: like a depressing time and there's nothing else to do,
- 54:58Speaker 1: I'm like, I need something good in my life now.
- 55:00Speaker 1: So I bought chocolate cake about or I bought it
- 55:02Speaker 1: was like it was like going to deer camp. Everything
- 55:04Speaker 1: I saw that I want, I'm like, all right, I'm
- 55:06Speaker 1: buying it. I don't care I'm buying it. I'm buying
- 55:08Speaker 1: it dessert every night. Oh so hey for Dan Johnson
- 55:16Speaker 1: here whired to Hunt podcast. I want to ask you
- 55:20Speaker 1: a question when you're when you're sitting around having some
- 55:23Speaker 1: beers with the boys. What and not your children, but
- 55:27Speaker 1: like Mark and Corey and all those other guys, Um,
- 55:31Speaker 1: what is your what's your go to snack? Too much?
- 55:35Speaker 1: Not a main meal, not a main meal, but a
- 55:37Speaker 1: snack to eat while you're drinking beers. Oh well, I'm
- 55:40Speaker 1: drinking beers. I feel like I'm being set up for
- 55:43Speaker 1: something here. You're not, by the way. I don't know, dude. Um,
- 55:48Speaker 1: I feel like I've got a couple of different things.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Like if we're like this wouldn't be drinking beers. But
- 55:52Speaker 1: if we're like road tripping, Um, I know this butterfilled pretzels,
- 56:00Speaker 1: that's the road trip snack. You know. It's like his
- 56:02Speaker 1: wife won't let him eat those at home, Dawn, Why not?
- 56:07Speaker 1: She says, I always eat like half of the thing
- 56:09Speaker 1: and then just they're just sitting our pantry forever because
- 56:12Speaker 1: I get like worn out on them, and they're just
- 56:14Speaker 1: like they're they're good like at home, not quite the
- 56:16Speaker 1: same like when you're on the road. Um uh man,
- 56:22Speaker 1: just like sitting around, like hanging out like at deer
- 56:25Speaker 1: camp or something. Like, I don't know. I mean what
- 56:27Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of. We always just having junk
- 56:29Speaker 1: up there, man, like orioles or jerky or anything like chips. Yeah,
- 56:35Speaker 1: like salty like chips and salsa, that kind of stuff.
- 56:40Speaker 1: The standard. Nothing nothing crazy. What do you think, Dan?
- 56:44Speaker 1: Do you prove? Yeah, that's all right. I wasn't gonna
- 56:48Speaker 1: judge him. I'm not you know, I'm not going to
- 56:49Speaker 1: venison shame in Mark like you did me the other time.
- 56:53Speaker 1: I feel like you've done that a few times to you. Yeah,
- 56:56Speaker 1: you don't eat venison with every meal? Are you kidding me? Um?
- 57:02Speaker 1: Did you ever try whatever that idea was that I was?
- 57:05Speaker 1: It was convincing your wife to eat more venison by
- 57:09Speaker 1: offering up the money savings for vacations. Did you try that? No,
- 57:15Speaker 1: it won't work. It won't work. It's worth the shot. Hey,
- 57:23Speaker 1: you know what, Dan, Josh, Josh has a turkey story
- 57:27Speaker 1: for us. He has actually killed the turkey. I don't
- 57:31Speaker 1: hear it better than two of we just me and
- 57:33Speaker 1: me and Dan just talked about how we can't kill
- 57:35Speaker 1: a turkey. Tell us how to do it, Josh, Well,
- 57:38Speaker 1: it's a really short story. Um, it didn't take a
- 57:41Speaker 1: whole long time, Dan, I've been wearing out Mark that
- 57:43Speaker 1: he hasn't had me on his uh his bonus turkey podcast.
- 57:47Speaker 1: Yet I go out there and kill him an opening
- 57:49Speaker 1: morning and I don't even get any love. She's got
- 57:53Speaker 1: to bring it in all these experts or whatever. Yea
- 57:59Speaker 1: true now, So I opening morning of Michigan season. I
- 58:05Speaker 1: went out. It was actually like the first time I've
- 58:07Speaker 1: ever turkey hunted alone. We're usually we're doing like a
- 58:11Speaker 1: like a turkey camp or you know, we're getting together
- 58:13Speaker 1: some guys and and turkey hunting together. So this is
- 58:16Speaker 1: the first time I've ever gone out alone. And I
- 58:19Speaker 1: get there, I get to the property, Um, you know,
- 58:22Speaker 1: I feel like I'm doing pretty good on time. And
- 58:24Speaker 1: get out of my truck and start, um getting everything around,
- 58:28Speaker 1: get my gun out of the case. And my door
- 58:31Speaker 1: doesn't close like like I thought I closed my door.
- 58:34Speaker 1: So I close a little harder. I've got I've got
- 58:37Speaker 1: an F one fifty. It's like the aluminum frame and
- 58:40Speaker 1: for whatever reason, the doors like they're hard to close,
- 58:43Speaker 1: they don't close quietly. Um, So I closed a little
- 58:47Speaker 1: hard and boom shot gobbles like close to the house,
- 58:51Speaker 1: close to where I'm parked. So I had an idea
- 58:53Speaker 1: of where they were, and so I kind of did
- 58:55Speaker 1: this big loop around see something. And for some reason,
- 58:58Speaker 1: I just feel like that part is exaggerated. I just
- 59:02Speaker 1: I just had this vision in my head that instead
- 59:05Speaker 1: Josh opened the truck door, got out and just slams
- 59:08Speaker 1: the door shut and it sucks like holing. And and
- 59:11Speaker 1: then my uncle used to do that. My uncle used
- 59:15Speaker 1: to be My uncle used to pull into a parking
- 59:17Speaker 1: spot at public ground. We'd get out real quiet, and
- 59:20Speaker 1: he would slam the door as hard as you could,
- 59:22Speaker 1: and that is what would trigger shot gobble. So I
- 59:27Speaker 1: believe you it's it's almost not a bad idea, you know.
- 59:30Speaker 1: And and honestly, like I was a part like a
- 59:33Speaker 1: park at the house, um of his property. Um, And
- 59:38Speaker 1: so I think they're these birds, they just haven't been hunted.
- 59:41Speaker 1: I don't know when the last time this place has
- 59:43Speaker 1: been turkey hunted, to be honest. So you know, I
- 59:45Speaker 1: had seen some birds like fly up into trees and
- 59:48Speaker 1: roost near the house, and I was deer hunting, so
- 59:51Speaker 1: I kind of had an idea of where I wanted
- 59:53Speaker 1: to go. Um. I was just really surprised they're right there.
- 59:56Speaker 1: So they're they're like right there. So I do this
- 59:58Speaker 1: little loop around. I sit down by tree, and I've
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: got birds and like all directions just going off on
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: the roost. I mean, they were just gobbling their heads off. Um.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: And it was cold, man, It's like there's still snow
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: on the ground um up here. So um, I just
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: did like a couple like real light little calling sequences,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: just let them know, hey, there's maybe a hen in
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: the area. And there's two times in this tree. And man,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: they flew down a little bit after daylight, and one
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: of them kind of stayed up on this little ridge
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: and he was he was strutting around, putting on a show.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: And this other one just came running right in and
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I just shot him at like thirty yards and dropped him.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: And that was the end of my turkey season lasted
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: all about thirty minutes. Um, and I had pulled the trigger.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: So I'm going down. It's like pumped, and I was like, man,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: now I've got a month and a half of quarantine,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: but no more turkey tags. It's kind of like, oh man,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: what did I do? But now I was really pumped
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: to get one, and uh, definitely like a little bit
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: of a confidence booster. Even even if I didn't do,
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: uh have to do a ton for it, I felt
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: like at least did something right to put myself in
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: the in the right spot. So, hey, yeah, you eadiot.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: Uh not yet, Nope, we just had that. We just
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: had a new recipe put up over on the Mediator website, Danielle.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: I think it was put together a Chick fil A
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: kind of replica recipe for turkey nuggets that looks very good.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I saw that. I think that one's on our list
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: to try. Yeah. Uh, it's hard to beat turkey nuggets,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: one in one former fashion or another. I that's just
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: good old fashioned eating. Yepnood yep. Yeah, right back to that,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: daniel Right. Um. So, I have a couple listener questions
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: that I did want to try to get to, and
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: now you're here, Josh, it's particularly relevant. I think you're
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: willing to stick on answer a couple of these. Sure,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: i'll do. My best term is were you in your
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: office working or was in the middle hanging out with
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: your wife? No, I was in my office. I was
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: in my office trying to get some work done, and
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I was like, man, I don't know if he's meaning
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: to call me, but I'll see what he's doing. It's amazing.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: It's the best luck I've had all year. But this
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: might be a segment. I know, we really should call
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: it calling further for the last quarter. Okay. So, so
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: Brock sent me a couple of questions here. He says
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: he's twenty eight and looking for a mentor for big
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: game hunting and conservation. He's really into this stuff, but
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: getting into it newly into it. Um, it's curious. First
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: first of three questions one, any suggestions for finding some
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: kind of mentorship. Number two, he's really interested and excited
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: about public lands, wants to support them. He's been trying
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: to get involved with TRCP and b h A, but
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: he'd like to know how he can get more involved.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: And then question number three, he's curious about how we
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: molded our careers as outdoorsmen and conservationists. How have we
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: gotten a job within this sector? Um? So all three
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: of us work within the outdoor world. We all, in
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: one former fashion, do some stuff with conservation and mentorship.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: But Josh, what would use what about question number one
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: when it comes to mentorship? Yeah? Sure, I mean really,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: my suggestion would be just to you know, connect with
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: any of the local conservation groups in your area, whether
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: it be Q D m A or b h A
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: or Pheasants Forever, Rocky Mountain ol Foundation. I mean, whoever
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: it is. You know, they may not have a specific
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: program going on in your area, but I'm sure they've
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: got people who are seasoned hunters and willing to take
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: somebody new out. And you know you could. You're probably
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: within a stone's throw of our ranch or a chapter
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: wherever you are in the country of one of those groups.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: And um, I would say you have a pretty good
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: luck of finding someone that be willing to take you
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: out or show you, um some things or whatever, um
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: from from one of those groups. Yeah. I feel like
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: that's like the single best way these days, even just
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: if you want to meet some like minded like hunting
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: fishing buddies, if you move to a new place or
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: something like That's gonna be my new go to move
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: is just tap into whatever the local conservation ore is, chapter, branch, whatever,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: and and yeah, especially like b h A QT may
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: where they have all these local events going on. Um,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: it's such an easy way to get connected. And then
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: you've got new friends, you've got new mentors, you've got
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: new ideas and opportunities and all those All those organizations
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: have like a website where typically can just go to
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: their main like national website and do like find a
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: branch or a chapter and you can pretty much, you know,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: filter down to your s an area and where things
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: are at, find them on Facebook, on the local groups
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: on Facebook. I mean, there's all all kinds of different
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: ways and connect locally with people. Okay, So speaking on
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: these same things, and let's go to the next one,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: which is how can I he specifically talked about public lands,
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: but let's uh, let's expand it from public lands just
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: to overall conservation stuff in general. Uh. Given all of
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: your experience managing things for q D, may any other
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: advice other than just connecting with these groups to get
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: involved to do more. Um. I don't know what do
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: you see as some of those areas of weakness that
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: you guys need more help with it that b h
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: A needs more help with Because I don't know if
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: you knew this, Dan, But not only is Josh the
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: qum A regional director, he's also on the board for
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Michigan's b h A organization as well, right, Josh H
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: multifaceted help out some of the hunt of recruitment stuff
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: on the board and whatnot. So UM, yeah, I mean
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: I think the big thing is just a lot of
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: people don't know, um what's going on or how to
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: get involved. So one of the things I would how
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: would suggest that if you're not a member of those
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: groups that you um are interested in definitely becoming a member,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: get on their email lists. UM. You know, all these
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: groups send out uh like the blasts or email notifications
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: of different events or volunteer opportunities that are happening um
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: in the in your area. UM. They can all filter
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: down and and target specific areas where you know things
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: are happening. So make sure you join join their email list.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: That's the best way to stay up to date m
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: on what they've got going on, follow the local Facebook
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: pages or whatnot, and UM that would be my suggestion
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: on how to make sure you're keeping track of what's
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: going on, Dan, Do you have any thoughts on those? Yeah?
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Other than I think my only insight would be to
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: contact your local UH County Conservation Board. And these guys
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: are working on projects all the time, and they're looking
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: for volunteers all the time, and depending on if you
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: what you're looking to provide, If you're looking to volunteer,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: you're looking to provide um, you know, money, They're like, hey,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: I got some money. I want to help, you know
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: with a project or whatever. Hey, I'm recording your podcast. Guys,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: get out of here. Get out of here. Shut the
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: door all the way. Sorry, best podcast ever, continuing past
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: down the toilet. You're not even recording, are you? No?
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: This is never this is never going to air man.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: You stopped recording as soon as I answered the phone. Yeah,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: uh so, yeah, yeah, it just it depends on what
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: you what you're wanting to do, if you want to
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: give money or if you want to volunteer time. Um,
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: you know, I would start at you know, at a
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: at a hyper local level with your county conservation board
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: because they're always looking for people to help do what,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: you know, do the projects. Um. Specifically in the county
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: that I live in. Recently, they drained the lake and
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: they had to do some work on it, right, so
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: as they're filling it up, they were looking for volunteers
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: to help plant underwater vegetation, so getting the mud and
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: you know, and plant these plants, and then as the
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: water fills back up into this lake, then the plants
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: start to grow. So there projects are looking for volunteers
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: all the time. That's a great it's a great point.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: And those are probably the types of organizations, local, very
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: local county kind of things that had a little bit
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: harder time probably railing people to come help on some
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: of that stuff. Absolutely. Um. You know. The only thing
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: I would add on top of that, just unique to
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: right now is I've seen a lot of organizations like
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Kutie May and others who usually have these in person
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: in banquets or pint nights or whatever that they depend
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: on for funding. They can't do those right now, so
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: they're trying to do virtual things, virtual giveaways, virtual you know,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: fundraisers more than usual, and um, and they're pretty dependent
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: on trying to raise some money right now to try
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: to keep people employed, try to keep the thing going.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: So I would just echo same thing that I know
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: all of us have been talking about. UM, if you
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: have a little extra money, usually it's always like, hey,
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: money is great, but don'tate time, um, because that's usually
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: in less supply. But I think right now a lot
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: of organizations. Organizations really do need money. So if you
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: happen to have an extra dollar two. I know it's
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: tight for for everyone right now in different ways, but
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: if you can swing a little extra, I know, I'm
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: sure folks like you guys at QT may would leve
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: a little participation in those online giveaways, raffles or whatever.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Right Yeah, Oh for sure, Yeah, I mean, I mean, um,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: you know, nonprofit groups they're always running at you know,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: lean lean levels, and and you know, what's going on
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: right now has definitely had a had a big impact
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: on how we're able to you know, operate even just
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: on a daily basis with different in person events and
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: and like you said, there's not a whole lot of
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: opportunities to be out there doing things right now, are
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: you know, gathering? Um so yeah, definitely right now. I mean,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: if you've got a couple of bucks to spare or
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: even just join as a member, it's um it means
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: a lot right now. Yeah, all right. What about the
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: last part of that question, getting a career within the
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: outdoor world. Um, I know we've had conversations like this
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: in the past, we've covered it, but is there anything new,
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Dan or josh I don't think I've ever gotten your perspective, Josh,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: Um I get this. I'm sure you guys all get
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: it to everyone, tons and tons of questions about how
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: do you get a job in the outdoor industry, how
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: do you get involved in his career? Any new thoughts
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: or different thoughts on that, um Dan, maybe that you know, Uh,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I get asked all the time, and I'm sure you
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: do too, Mark. You know, dude, I would love to
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: do what you do. I would love to work in
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: the hunting industry or whatever. This is if if you
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: want consistent paychecks and if you want to have a
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: secure income, this is not what you want to do.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: It's because, I mean, straight up, it's uh there there's
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: times where it's struck. You know, you struggle, right, I
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: mean I this is a perfect example. You know, a
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: lot right now, A lot of these hunting industry companies
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: are having to hold their money in for you know,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: hold it in and uh, luckily, I you know, I'm
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: I'm doing okay right now. But you know, if you're
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: just new getting into it, make sure you have another
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: job first, right, and then work your way up and
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: and all that stuff. And this is nothing new, but
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: start somewhere else, don't. You don't have to go to
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: content creation right away. I mean, you can do what
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Josh is doing. You can do um. You know, whatever
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: your background is, you can start a side gig doing that,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: or you know, if you have an idea for a
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: product or whatever. There's a thousand different things that you
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: can do. Two, get your foot in the door. Yeah,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: that's a great point. Yep, Yeah, I would echo that.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: I mean, anything you can do to network and and
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: just meet as many different people as you can, um
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: within that space that you're looking to get into. I mean,
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: I think that's key. And and do what you can
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: on the side and and kind of build that resume.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: And maybe you know, if you're looking to do what
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: I like in the conservation world or whatever, I mean,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: maybe you look at volunteering with some groups and that's
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: a great way to meet people. It's a great thing
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: to have on your resume. UM. And then you have
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: to be willing just to take a leap and and
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: you know, go outside of your comfort zone if you're
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: in the you know, I was in the corporate banking world,
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: and you know, I was doing all right, and I
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: just knew it wasn't what I wanted to do forever,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: and I just had to be willing to kind of
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: go outside of my comfort zone and take that leap
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: of faith. And man, I can't imagine doing anything different
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: at this point, you know. Yeah, it's it's a lifestyle
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: choice for sure in a lot of ways. And I'm
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: glad it worked out for you. I think the only
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: thing I would add, I would just echo something you
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: just said, Josh, and just expand on it a little bit.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: I think that, um, volunteering your time is a great
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: way to get a foot in because this is like
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: where there's a lot of people that want to work
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: in this world and if you can somehow offer your services,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: and you know, it's a donation of your time, your energy,
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: your ideas, your artwork, your photography, whatever. Um, if you
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: can find a way to get your foot in the
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: door in that kind of way, you know. Uh, that's
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: that foot in the door is so important. The networking
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: and the foot in the door is is so key.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: And then I think the networking is a little different
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: right now because in the past, you know, networking could
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: be going to these different conventions, it could be going
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: to various events, Uh, whatever. Now it's more virtual networking
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: at least in the short term here. Um, So this
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: is when you're and I I don't know if I'm
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: hesitant to do this to say this or not, but
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: like your digital your digital presence is maybe more important
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: than ever. Your who you are online is kind of
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: your resume in a lot of ways, and so thinking
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: about that not as just like where you rant on
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Facebook to your friends, but also realizing that might be
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: the one way that you're able to connect with someone
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: in the outdoor industry right now, or the one way
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: you can build a connection with someone is through what
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: you post and share on Instagram. So I would just
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: if you want to get into this world and you
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: want to start connecting with other people, which I highly
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: recommend you do, that's happening digitally right now. So be
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: cognizant of the digital impact you have, what you're saying,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: what you're putting out there, how you present yourself, um,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: and think about it more than just like your local bar.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I guess might be what I would say, so different,
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: different kind of angler. And at the same time, if
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: you do what you just said, I feel like whenever
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: someone new comes into the digital space, they instantly try
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: to compete on a nation level, on on a national level.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: When I feel that there is a market that's untapped
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: at a local level, on a super niche, on a
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: super niche level, to where let's say your county specific
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: or area specific, right, you know, maybe it's not nationwide,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: but hey, maybe it's Southeast Illinois. You know, hey it's
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: the Southeast Illinois something or other or whatever whatever it
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: is at a very hyper focused level. I think there's
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: there's value in that as well. And I'll tell you
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: up right now, I would listen to the Southeast Illinois
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: something or other podcast. Tell anyone that's a podcast, I
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: would click on. All right, last question and then uh,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna have to balance because I just
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: got a picture of a two year old that's not
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: wearing pants, that was pulling up my wife's jacket while
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: she's on a phone call. So, uh, if you yeah, right,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: just another day in our life. Just wait, I don't
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: know it's so hard about all this mind of sleeps.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: Just just shut up, hang up on him, hang up done.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: If if you had twenty bucks, in just twenty bucks
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: to buy a gift right now for our listeners. So
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: you got twenty bucks per listener, you can buy one
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: thing and we're gonna give it to everybody. Right now,
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: what would you buy him, Dan, I'm gonna put you
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: on the spot. I'm gonna buy every one of the listeners,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: and I have twenty bucks to spend. I'm gonna buy
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: him a thirty pack of bush Light. They have to
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: prove their twenty one first, but as long as that's
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: the case, dirty thirty Yeah, alright, So we're helping out
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: with that digital happy hour that is that is the
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: post hunt celebration. Okay, is there a pickled egg in
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: there somewhere for him too? I think if you can find, uh,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: if you can find a thirty pack for like fifteen bucks.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: And I'm or maybe I don't even know what a
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: thirty pack cost, I'll be honest with you, probably close
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: to twenty bucks, maybe bucks, I don't know. Maybe it's
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: on discount. Maybe maybe I'm only getting him a case
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: of beer. But with the leftover money, I'm sure there's
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: a packet of pickled eggs you can buy as well.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: All right, that's a great gift for right now. Further,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: what are you buying with your twenty bucks. That that's
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: a tough one. That's a tough question. Um, if you
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: can get an acorn crunch for twenty bucks, No, there's
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: because they're not I don't think they're in production anymore.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: They're collector's items. I bet you like a hundred bucks
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: of pop. Yeah, man, man oh man, um uh, this
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: is you probably have a little left over. But if
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: I could buy one thing for everybody right now, I'd
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: buy them that Wild Country. I'm good, some good reading material?
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? For? Are you how? How deep
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: is your nose? I'm just looking at that bookshelf here
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: and pop right up? But you gotta get it for
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: the back cover model. That's that's really where the that's
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: where it's at. Did you know that Dan josh is
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: that he is on the back cover? Congrat buddy. Yeah,
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: that's amazing. Man. That's a that's a that's a really
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: hard question. Twenty dollars. I feel like you can get
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: a lot with twenty dollars, but you can't get a
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: lot with twenty dollars. Yeah, you know, I don't know
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: what I would say. I was going to say a
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: book too, but now I feel like a book suggestion
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: would be a cheap uh answer, given the fact that
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: you plugged mind so nicely. Um, but you can find
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: that wild country at your local bookstore online Barnes and Noble,
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: Amazon if you want to make in the outdoor industry
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: always grinding. Uh No, you know, I would buy a
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Sand County Almanac for everybody. I can't think of anything
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: but a book, but that would be the book I
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: think i'd buy. So on that note, boys, I need
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: to end our little social distancing so socialization happy hour.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: So Josh, thanks for hopping on here in PROMPTU. Thanks
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: for the call. Good good to catch up, Daniel. Thank
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: you as always, be safe out there, have a good time,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Good luck turkey hunting. Dan, let's do this again soon.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: Sounds good. I would talk to you guys later. All right,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: that's gonna do it for us today. I know this
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: one was kind of all over the place, but I
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: hope you've got a couple of laughs. Hope you enjoyed
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: this kind of bra from normal. I know that I
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: needed this. Hopefully you did too. Hopefully you can do
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: something similar with friends of your own. And until next time,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: I hope you'll stay wired to hunt
