- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Husky's back
- 0:03in action at the Excel Centers Sunday eleven thirty the pre game and we'll have
- 0:08the opening tip at twelve. Way normally back in the saddle with us at
- 0:12the Excel, so we're looking forward to seeing him. He's been in Sick
- 0:16Bay a little bit lately, but we'll have the wayner back. Coach.
- 0:20You get ready for a team for a second game, How is that different
- 0:25than the first time you play a team, because now you know, you
- 0:28know what they're going to try to do. You probably figure they're going to
- 0:32make adjustments. What's your thought on that with Xavier coming in here playing you
- 0:36for the second time here in the month. Yeah, you obviously looked the
- 0:41things that went wrong for you and went wrong for them, and you make
- 0:46the adjustments and you try to anticipate, you know what those guys are going
- 0:50to do. You know, the teams know each other so well, I
- 0:53think, especially having you know, such a short period of time in between
- 0:59games. You know, so I think you know they've played Xavier's played you
- 1:06know, really really well. They've played to you know, to a top
- 1:08thirty five metric and those are always tough games. You know. Showan's teams
- 1:15are always you know, tough and physical, and they defend and then they
- 1:21destroyed us on the backboard and really beat us up on the interior. So
- 1:26obviously we played it without Donovan, which is certainly going to help some of
- 1:29the rebounding issues we had in the first game. But you know, we've
- 1:33got to obviously, you know, make some adjustments, still make them.
- 1:37Yeah, speaking of Donovan, he went twenty two minutes against Villanova and you
- 1:41needed him down the stretch. I think you mentioned in your post game that
- 1:45you said, are you okay? Can you go? And he said,
- 1:48yeah, I'm good, let's go. That was important because that was kind
- 1:52of a threshold. You didn't know how much he could give you and then
- 1:55it's nitty gritty time you got to have him, and he was able to
- 1:59stand up it. Yeah. He Yeah, he's such a game changer.
- 2:04And uh, you know you you uh, you know you sometimes you you
- 2:08know, you you hear the squirrels and that they're you know that they talk
- 2:12about you know, his season and the statistics and you know, maybe not
- 2:15being you know as gaudy as as was expected. The guy's been has not
- 2:22been healthy at all. He's kind of gutted out this year. But when
- 2:25he is in the game, he's he's truly you know, the the analytics
- 2:30saying he's one of the most impactful players in the country. You know,
- 2:34our defense plays to a top flight, elite level defense when he's on the
- 2:38court. When he's at the court offensively, he creates opportunities. Uh,
- 2:44you know that make us a top flight offensive team. His presence on the
- 2:47backboard, so you know, he uh getting him back, making sure he's
- 2:53healthy, uh to help us, uh, you know through March and hopefully
- 2:59uh have have you know, uh you know championship finished to the season.
- 3:04So I'm gonna make a wild guests here. Uh. The Musketeers kind of
- 3:07beat us up up there in Cincinnati. They were throwing bodies around like it
- 3:12was a wrestling match for a while, and uh, I don't I don't
- 3:16see that happening again on Sunday. What do you think? I mean?
- 3:21It depends, I guess on the officials and what their their tolerance is,
- 3:27what their stomach is for you know, physical you know, physical violence in
- 3:32the paint when shots go up. Uh, I mean some of the stuff
- 3:37obviously, Uh, you know, we I think the league plays into its
- 3:43reputation as you know, these Big East kind of case frights. And I
- 3:49think at times though, you know, when shots go up on the glass,
- 3:53uh, you know, the mauling of each other, I think,
- 3:57uh, sometimes it's just not basketball. Uh should be allowed to block out
- 4:01and hold position and not be shoved in the back and and uh you know,
- 4:05I think, uh, you know, we're not the most physical team.
- 4:10You know, we play incredibly hard and we fly around the court,
- 4:15but it's to our disadvantage when uh, you know, when it just becomes
- 4:19a mauling. Yeah. Well, there's a lot of hooking going on in
- 4:23that Xavier game, you know, with the rebounding situations. I I don't
- 4:28to me, it can't allow that because it just gets worse and worse and
- 4:31uglier and uglier. And that was the thing that surprised me about that game.
- 4:35Uh. Yeah, I'm with you. Boxing out is boxing out.
- 4:38It's it's part of the deal. But you're hooking guys and you're engaging people
- 4:43on the boards like that, You're only going to ask for trouble. Yeah,
- 4:46I mean conference playlists and you you you gotta let the guys, you
- 4:49know, you got you gotta let the players play. You know, I
- 4:53think you know, it's uh, you know, it just obviously it's got
- 4:58to be more more physical than the non conference during and also the instant to
- 5:02them because it's conference play. But I just think, you know, early
- 5:05in the game, early in the conference season, you know, set in
- 5:10a tone that uh, you know, just some kind of the the over
- 5:15the top, overly physical stuff. You know that we we don't we don't
- 5:20want these games to be played fifty five to fifty three. You know,
- 5:26people are gonna turn it off, you know people, Uh, if people
- 5:30want to see a competitiveness. I think that's what separates college uh you know,
- 5:33regular season from you know the n b A regular season is the you
- 5:39know, is we're living and dying with winning every game and that and it's
- 5:44not a stet statistic driven Uh well, I got my numbers, so it
- 5:48doesn't matter if we won. Type of mindset, uh, you know,
- 5:53And I think you know, the the you know, the referees. You
- 5:57know, we've got some some really good ones in this leadleag They got a
- 6:00tough job. Yeah, yeah, I'm with you on the ugliness of some
- 6:04of these games. But the preview, you got seven wins in a row.
- 6:08Four of them came when you scored in the eighties. One was the
- 6:11eighty seventy five win over Xavier. Now these last two you've won a little
- 6:15different. Sixty two to forty eight Creighton putting on a defensive masterpiece, I
- 6:20thought, and then sixty six sixty five with Villanova. So I mean,
- 6:27is it safe to say you're kind of proving you can win either way here
- 6:30in this last stretch. Yeah, I think you have to. We it
- 6:34was you know, not sustainable for us with the direction on defense, was
- 6:42heading in to have the type of season we want we want to have here
- 6:47and the defensive improvement at least from a forcing our opponent to missshots. Our
- 6:57field goal percentage defense has been pretty good. At times. We've had issues,
- 7:00you know, creating turnovers and then keeping people off the free throw line,
- 7:06and then also keeping people off of the offensive glass. So you know,
- 7:14there's other things that contribute to a sinking of your defensive efficiency that go
- 7:19well beyond just a defensive scheme. I think our defensive schemes have always been
- 7:25really really really solid, whether it's scouting or just our general approach to defensive
- 7:30strategy. But you know, you can't foul, you've got a defensive rebound,
- 7:35and you also have got to force turnovers or else. The points per
- 7:40possession isn't going to be very gaudy. Yes, it's almost like a mathematical
- 7:45equation. All right, Dan, holdly with us. We'll be back after
- 7:47this quick time out. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on Learfield
