- 0:06Speaker 1: Here it is on a Texan Tuesday.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us here on Sports Radio
- 0:10Speaker 2: AM 1300 The Zone.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Hopefully we can get you still climbing up that hill
- 0:17Speaker 2: on what I used to think, used to think was
- 0:21Speaker 2: the worst commuting day of the week. I don't think
- 0:24Speaker 2: that anymore. I think it's Thursday now. Maybe people are just,
- 0:28Speaker 2: you know, trying to get home, get out of town
- 0:30Speaker 2: quicker on that. Tuesday's no picnic.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Trust me.
- 0:33Speaker 2: And I think it, is probably falling into the number
- 0:36Speaker 2: two spot in my commuting days rankings. But it's up there.
- 0:45Speaker 2: It's definitely difficult. We're glad to have you with us.
- 0:49Speaker 2: My name is Craig Wade. Thanks very much for joining us.
- 0:51Speaker 2: We're with you each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through
- 0:54Speaker 2: Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 a.m. We includes the producer,
- 0:59Speaker 2: Jay Kerman. I will ask you the question. I don't
- 1:01Speaker 2: know how many folks... do what those of us in
- 1:08Speaker 2: the sporting industry, so to speak, do. But I do
- 1:12Speaker 2: know a lot of people who do this kind of stuff,
- 1:14Speaker 2: constantly flipping channels one game or another. Then there are
- 1:17Speaker 2: those who have the multiple screens in their house, or
- 1:20Speaker 2: maybe sometimes if I'm watching one game on my big screen,
- 1:23Speaker 2: I might have a game on my laptop or on
- 1:25Speaker 2: my iPad, so I'm keeping tabs on it.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I didn't do.
- 1:28Speaker 2: That stuff last night, but I had a pretty quick
- 1:31Speaker 2: thumb last night. at least for a while, between watching,
- 1:38Speaker 2: I was watching earlier, the first one to start, Dallas
- 1:41Speaker 2: Mavericks and Miami Heat. Pretty entertaining game. You saw probably
- 1:47Speaker 2: the posterizing dunk of the early part of the season
- 1:52Speaker 2: there from Giannis Antetokounmpo, but it was one of the
- 1:56Speaker 2: few real highlights from them because they're now 0-4 because
- 2:00Speaker 2: Cooper Flagg, who very nearly corralled his first NBA career triple-double,
- 2:05Speaker 2: had a marvelous game. And the Mavericks won that. But
- 2:09Speaker 2: I started off watching that. Get to 7 o'clock. World
- 2:13Speaker 2: Series game three starts between the Brewers and the Rays.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And then about 7.20, the Cowboys-Eagles game kicked off. So
- 2:22Speaker 2: from that point on, around 7.20, I just start flipping
- 2:26Speaker 2: back and forth. I'm doing a lot of things flipping
- 2:29Speaker 2: back and forth.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And then... The eight-run fifth inning changed it at that point.
- 2:36Speaker 2: At that point, I didn't worry about following the action
- 2:38Speaker 2: too closely because at that point, the Brewers were up 10-0,
- 2:40Speaker 2: and it was pretty much a fait accompli. So I
- 2:43Speaker 2: continued to watch the Cowboys by and large, not just
- 2:47Speaker 2: because I had Dak Prescott and Brandon Aubrey and CeeDee
- 2:50Speaker 2: Lamb on my fantasy team, but also just to see
- 2:52Speaker 2: how the Cowboys were going to respond on the road,
- 2:54Speaker 2: which they did. And got the win and saw the
- 2:58Speaker 2: Mavericks finish off the Heat. So it was a pretty
- 3:00Speaker 2: busy night. How did you spend your sports-watching evening? Because
- 3:04Speaker 2: you were doing.
- 3:05Speaker 1: That, weren't you?
- 3:06Speaker 3: Well, I had the baseball in an AirPod.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Because I love baseball on the radio.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Sure.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I just do. And so I had that going there.
- 3:15Speaker 5: I had.
- 3:16Speaker 2: That's Shambi still doing it, right?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Well, and I had the Brewers crew.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Brewers, you're listening to Jeff Levering and my old pal.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Lane Grindle.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Lane Grindle and Josh Maurer did the fifth. They've been
- 3:28Speaker 6: calling him Maurer Magic in the postseason because he's been
- 3:31Speaker 6: on the mic for a lot of the Brewers' big innings. But,
- 3:34Speaker 6: you know, I'm trying to keep up with friends that
- 3:37Speaker 6: are spread out across the country as well.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I get a call.
- 3:40Speaker 6: I'm catching up with one of my oldest home friends,
- 3:42Speaker 6: the one who I visited up in New York back
- 3:44Speaker 6: in October.
- 3:45Speaker 3: We're catching up.
- 3:46Speaker 6: Before I know it, you know, the 15 minutes we've
- 3:48Speaker 6: spent on the phone, the game and the World Series
- 3:50Speaker 6: have completely changed by.
- 3:51Speaker 3: The time I catch up to where I was.
- 3:54Speaker 6: So, you know, even the quickest of thumbs or in
- 3:56Speaker 6: my case, ears can't keep up with everything going on
- 3:59Speaker 6: around sports. I can't imagine trying to track a close
- 4:01Speaker 6: fantasy matchup last night as well.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Well, I was doing that, uh, you know, but, but
- 4:06Speaker 2: it all worked out for me on there. So, um,
- 4:09Speaker 2: but anyway, I, you know, I watching all this kind
- 4:12Speaker 2: of stuff and, and, uh, Linda's watching along with me.
- 4:15Speaker 1: She, she goes along there.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I told you that, um, uh, uh, what's her man,
- 4:22Speaker 2: Scott Hanson on Red Zone.
- 4:25Speaker 1: He kind of makes her crazy a little bit.
- 4:27Speaker 6: Yeah, by the way, does anyone know it was tight
- 4:29Speaker 6: ends day? I didn't hear it mentioned one time.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:33Speaker 2: So, but she follows along really well. She's really going
- 4:39Speaker 2: along well and she's a Mavericks fan too. Now, she
- 4:41Speaker 2: lost a lot of her fandom when the Luka trade
- 4:43Speaker 2: went down because she loved her some Luka. So she's
- 4:46Speaker 2: got spiked up interest in the Lakers, but she is
- 4:49Speaker 2: still a Mavericks fan and she was excited But then
- 4:51Speaker 2: the win last night.
- 4:52Speaker 1: So there was that. And she grew up in Dallas.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So she grew up a Cowboys fan.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Now, like many, like, you know, our man in the building,
- 5:01Speaker 2: Cameron Parker, she'd gotten a little jaded about him.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Tough start for Cameron's thunder, by the way.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And that's difficult, too, for him. So, and I kind
- 5:11Speaker 2: of like what I did with the Dodgers. I kind
- 5:13Speaker 2: of proselytized her a little bit to becoming somewhat of
- 5:16Speaker 2: a Rams fan. But she still likes the Cowboys a lot.
- 5:19Speaker 2: She liked your team when they went by Washington football team.
- 5:23Speaker 2: She liked that name. When they went to commanders, she
- 5:25Speaker 2: was like, eh, all right, I'm done.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Now you're just another team.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Yeah, right.
- 5:29Speaker 2: If you go back to being Washington football team, They
- 5:32Speaker 2: might steal her from me in terms of fandom.
- 5:35Speaker 6: I genuinely think if they were, you know, in a
- 5:37Speaker 6: different city, they could pull off football team.
- 5:40Speaker 3: But the fact that WFT is so close to WTF.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's true.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Bit of a drawback.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. Hadn't really thought about that.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Maybe if it was, no, that wouldn't work either. Anyway,
- 5:53Speaker 2: so we spent an evening watching it. By the way,
- 5:57Speaker 2: and you and I have never talked about this. And
- 6:01Speaker 2: I'll give people a little bit of warning because we'll
- 6:03Speaker 2: get into it next break. We did finish watching season
- 6:05Speaker 2: four of Ted Lasso.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I've got one left.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Oh, well, then I'm not going to say anything because
- 6:10Speaker 2: you definitely need to watch the last episode.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I'll finish it tonight.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:14Speaker 5: All right.
- 6:14Speaker 2: So we'll put that off to another time. But anyway,
- 6:19Speaker 2: you know, it was kind of an adventuresome evening. And
- 6:22Speaker 2: so wrapped around all of that. is the things that
- 6:26Speaker 2: went in my mind about the football game to come
- 6:28Speaker 2: this weekend, because I also, of course, have a professional
- 6:31Speaker 2: responsibility here on the program in this building, in the program,
- 6:36Speaker 2: and also in the broadcast booth calling the Longhorn football games. Now,
- 6:40Speaker 2: This is what I call overlap Roman numeral one. We
- 6:43Speaker 2: get to the overlap time of year, football and men's
- 6:46Speaker 2: and women's basketball. For example, after the show today, I'll
- 6:49Speaker 2: go over on campus and emcee women's basketball.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Welcome back dinner tonight.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And then tomorrow there'll be the recording tomorrow evening of
- 6:59Speaker 2: Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark. Thursday's women's basketball exhibition finale,
- 7:05Speaker 2: free at Moody Center if you want to come out.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And watch Texas play Eastern New Mexico. So there's those things.
- 7:11Speaker 2: The men, of course, open the season next Monday against
- 7:14Speaker 2: Chicago State, and the women open their regular season a
- 7:17Speaker 2: week from tomorrow against Fairleigh Dickinson. So it's a busy
- 7:20Speaker 2: time with all this stuff going on, but it's cool.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I've always liked that. So I'm never very far away
- 7:27Speaker 2: from the thought process of some preparation and some reading
- 7:31Speaker 2: things and swapping texts with a good friend, Neil Price,
- 7:35Speaker 2: play-by-play voice of the for a preview of the matchup
- 7:41Speaker 2: between the two. And clearly, we'll be getting his thoughts
- 7:47Speaker 2: on the fact that it was announced today that Kamario
- 7:49Speaker 2: Taylor is done for the year. Their outstanding, talented quarterback
- 7:53Speaker 2: who gave the Longhorns such a fit last year. But
- 7:55Speaker 2: Taylor is out for the year. It's that toe issue.
- 7:59Speaker 2: He's going to need surgery today. on that toe, is
- 8:03Speaker 2: expected to make a full recovery according to a university release.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Jeff Lebby, the head coach, said nobody wants to be
- 8:09Speaker 2: on that field more than Camario. I know how much
- 8:11Speaker 2: this team means to him and how much he means
- 8:14Speaker 2: to this team.
- 8:15Speaker 1: We'll be right there with him throughout the recovery.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So he injured that toe back at the end of
- 8:20Speaker 2: September against Missouri, tried to play against Alabama, tried to
- 8:24Speaker 2: play against Oklahoma last week. He missed the game against
- 8:28Speaker 2: LSU on the 17th. Clearly wasn't 100%. Either of those
- 8:32Speaker 2: games left both early. So he's definitely going to be out.
- 8:37Speaker 2: So that, you know, that was going through my mind,
- 8:40Speaker 2: what was happening there. And then the Longhorns themselves and
- 8:47Speaker 2: getting ready for this game. So in hearing from a
- 8:49Speaker 2: couple of Longhorns, Michael Masunis.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Remember him?
- 8:54Speaker 2: He was the other tight end. Came in from Michigan State.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Hadn't caught a pass until last Saturday.
- 8:58Speaker 3: He caught three.
- 8:59Speaker 1: So now he's kind of in the deal.
- 9:02Speaker 2: He's kind of, and he was asked, you know, why
- 9:06Speaker 2: does he think his snap count has gone up?
- 9:08Speaker 7: I think it's just been a mix of everything.
- 9:10Speaker 8: I think keeping my nose down, keep working hard through practice,
- 9:13Speaker 8: getting my reps and executing them on the field. I
- 9:16Speaker 8: think that was a big thing to show the confidence
- 9:18Speaker 8: of the coaches that I'm executing them on the field
- 9:21Speaker 8: and in practice and then in the games too.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Okay.
- 9:23Speaker 9: All right.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Sartre mentioned yesterday in the press conference how The tangible
- 9:29Speaker 2: measurement of the effort going up. Because he was asked
- 9:34Speaker 2: this by reporters. And again, here's the delineation I think
- 9:37Speaker 2: that's important distinction to be made here. People look at
- 9:42Speaker 2: tweets from across the country and automatically assume that Sark
- 9:45Speaker 2: is just gushing out these things about like the Arch
- 9:48Speaker 2: Manning thing if his name was Joe Smith.
- 9:50Speaker 1: He was answering a question.
- 9:52Speaker 2: And it always comes down to him answering a question
- 9:54Speaker 2: and folks thinking it's a declarative statement.
- 9:57Speaker 1: When he is in fact asking a question.
- 9:59Speaker 2: So he was asked last week about the uptick, what
- 10:04Speaker 2: he had seen in practice and talked about, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 2: the things that they can measure, the performance. And there
- 10:12Speaker 2: were some folks who were, you know, unhappy because of
- 10:14Speaker 2: the back-to-back losses. And I understand that. kind of rolling
- 10:17Speaker 2: their eyes. It's more talk about practice. Let's see in
- 10:20Speaker 2: the game. He's answering a question. Somebody's asking him the question.
- 10:24Speaker 2: And for those who get tired of the questions, I
- 10:27Speaker 2: don't want to hear anymore.
- 10:28Speaker 1: That's cool. I totally get it. You are under no obligation.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You are not required by state, federal, or local law
- 10:36Speaker 2: to watch or listen to any.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Of the media availabilities. However, the media wants.
- 10:40Speaker 2: The availabilities to help in their story prep and things
- 10:43Speaker 2: like that. And for getting sound bites for television and radio,
- 10:46Speaker 2: things of that nature. That's why those availabilities happen. That's
- 10:49Speaker 2: why there's a press conference on Monday morning. That's why
- 10:53Speaker 2: there is a Zoom media session on Thursday. That's why tomorrow,
- 10:56Speaker 2: and this only happens every few weeks, there's an SEC
- 10:59Speaker 2: what's called teleconference. It's done by Zoom. It's not by
- 11:02Speaker 2: phone anymore. But he'll participate in one of those tomorrow
- 11:07Speaker 2: because the athletic departments of these schools are asked to
- 11:13Speaker 2: make their head coaches available. You don't have to listen
- 11:15Speaker 2: to them or watch them if you don't want to.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And quite frankly, if some of it wearies you, I understand,
- 11:21Speaker 2: and that's cool. But that's not going to stop them
- 11:24Speaker 2: from happening because those things do happen, okay?
- 11:28Speaker 1: And folks are going to report it.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Like I tweeted out yesterday about Sark talking about the
- 11:33Speaker 2: relief syndrome. and that they avoid and somebody tweeted back
- 11:37Speaker 2: at me and said why is he talking about that
- 11:38Speaker 2: should be concentrating on how to get how to uh
- 11:42Speaker 2: uh you know move past the losses and poor play
- 11:44Speaker 2: and i said and i answered back i said exactly
- 11:47Speaker 2: his point that they have to move beyond that to
- 11:51Speaker 2: get to continued improvement to upgrade the level of play
- 11:55Speaker 2: then to move farther away from the losses and to
- 11:57Speaker 2: have a big second half of the season that's the
- 11:59Speaker 2: point of all of that anyway um One of the
- 12:03Speaker 2: things that he talked about was the deal about the
- 12:07Speaker 2: practice came at 120% the way it was graded, and
- 12:11Speaker 2: then it was 125 in the game. And so, in
- 12:13Speaker 2: other words, carrying it to the field. And I think
- 12:17Speaker 2: everybody wanted.
- 12:18Speaker 1: To see that.
- 12:19Speaker 2: So Michael Masunis was asked, what does practice feel like
- 12:23Speaker 2: at 120%?
- 12:25Speaker 7: It's a lot more physical.
- 12:26Speaker 8: I mean, it was emphasized as being more physical, being faster,
- 12:30Speaker 8: and executing our assignments this week for sure. And we're
- 12:32Speaker 8: just going to keep building on that. I think we're
- 12:33Speaker 8: going to continue as a whole team to see how
- 12:36Speaker 8: it was last week and then keep recreating it week
- 12:39Speaker 8: by week.
- 12:39Speaker 1: All right, one more from Asunas.
- 12:42Speaker 2: The Longhorns, of course, had to deal with the frustration
- 12:46Speaker 2: of and the heartbreak of Oklahoma coming back to win
- 12:50Speaker 2: from down 10, from Florida coming back from down 14.
- 12:56Speaker 2: to win and hand Texas a second straight loss. In
- 12:59Speaker 2: this case, Texas was up 24-3, and Ole Miss came
- 13:04Speaker 2: all the way back to tie it. They never took
- 13:06Speaker 2: the lead. Longhorns came right back down the field and scored,
- 13:09Speaker 2: upped the ante to 10.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Ole Miss got a field goal to cut it to seven.
- 13:12Speaker 2: They got the crazy bounces and recovered the onside kick,
- 13:16Speaker 2: and they were throwing into the end zone at the
- 13:17Speaker 2: end of the game.
- 13:18Speaker 1: But Texas held on to win the game.
- 13:21Speaker 2: And so Michael Masunis was asked to describe the difference
- 13:24Speaker 2: between in answering an opponent's comeback bid versus the other
- 13:29Speaker 2: two games that wound up in the loss column I
- 13:31Speaker 2: think we.
- 13:32Speaker 8: Just stayed together as a team and we finally we
- 13:34Speaker 8: got back into it and it definitely helped with the
- 13:36Speaker 8: crowd the crowd definitely helped us come to the fourth
- 13:38Speaker 8: quarter when we were able to hear them getting the
- 13:41Speaker 8: defense going we're like all right let's go we got
- 13:43Speaker 8: to help our defense out we can't do this again
- 13:45Speaker 8: this has happened twice we got to go out there
- 13:47Speaker 8: and execute and help our guys.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Out All right, we're going to hear from some other
- 13:51Speaker 2: long ones throughout the course of the day. We're going
- 13:52Speaker 2: to hear from the center, Connor Robertson. We're going to
- 13:54Speaker 2: hear from Hiro Kanu. We're going to hear from Justin Cryer.
- 13:57Speaker 2: We'll hear from those guys. But coming up, and tell
- 14:03Speaker 2: you some other things we have coming up. Obviously, we
- 14:04Speaker 2: have Inconceivable this hour. We do have a fast food,
- 14:06Speaker 2: junk food update, and some other incorrigible things, behavior from
- 14:11Speaker 2: some adults. So we'll get to that. In the 3
- 14:15Speaker 2: o'clock hour, Greg Tepper. the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 14:19Speaker 2: Football Magazine, normally joins us every Tuesday at 3.15. Hadn't
- 14:22Speaker 2: been able to do it the last couple of weeks
- 14:24Speaker 2: for various and sundry reasons. We had to move it
- 14:26Speaker 2: to Wednesday. But now he'll be back in his regular slot,
- 14:32Speaker 2: Tuesdays with Tepper. That's coming up in the 3 o'clock hour.
- 14:35Speaker 2: So we'll have that. But coming up, got to talk
- 14:40Speaker 2: about the Cowboys winning last night over the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I mentioned at the start in terms of what we
- 14:44Speaker 2: were watching, but... Dallas got what many consider to be
- 14:48Speaker 2: a must-win. Just don't tell head coach Brian Schottenheimer that,
- 14:52Speaker 2: and don't tell his players.
- 14:53Speaker 1: That either, about the must-win thing, okay? Makes it bristle
- 14:58Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 14:59Speaker 2: You'll hear it coming up on Sports Radio AM 13
- 15:02Speaker 2: under the Zonity iHeartRadio app.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Snap is back as time fires it left side of
- 15:08Speaker 5: the end zone for Lamb over the shoulder.
- 15:11Speaker 10: Touchdown! Didn't drop that one.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Greek woman.
- 15:16Speaker 11: Beaten.
- 15:18Speaker 12: A little mint for your lamb chop right there.
- 15:22Speaker 13: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the voice
- 15:25Speaker 13: of the Longhorns, Craig Way.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice.
- 15:38Speaker 5: Old minute he never tried to not his heart.
- 15:41Speaker 10: Wasn't in it he just stole.
- 15:43Speaker 13: A kiss as he rode away he never hung his
- 15:47Speaker 13: hat up at kitty's place.
- 15:52Speaker 3: I should have been a cowboy i.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Should have learned to ride.
- 16:01Speaker 9: I got a feeling that Eagles fans weren't singing this
- 16:10Speaker 9: Toby Keith standard.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Should have been a cowboy. Had to be very disappointed.
- 16:16Speaker 2: It's the first time the Cowboys have won in Philadelphia
- 16:19Speaker 2: in five years.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Hadn't won there since 2021.
- 16:21Speaker 3: I actually thought the Boo Birds were tame last night.
- 16:24Speaker 1: They were. I think they were in shock. Really?
- 16:26Speaker 3: They understand, though, that team is missing almost an entire team.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Uh, really banged up.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Uh, but the Cowboys did really get it together in
- 16:35Speaker 2: the second half and pull away from Philadelphia, uh, to
- 16:39Speaker 2: win 38 to 21.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Yes.
- 16:41Speaker 2: The New York football giants are four, two, and one,
- 16:43Speaker 2: and they lead in the Cowboys are in second at
- 16:46Speaker 2: three and four. So the game and a half back, um,
- 16:50Speaker 2: I was in true point here. I've, I've been, I
- 16:54Speaker 2: watched the Manning cast last night cause I always like
- 16:56Speaker 2: to watch it.
- 16:57Speaker 1: And, and it was pretty entertaining.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Uh, um, I saw Jalen Brunson.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Jalen Brunson was on, and he's an Eagles fan, which
- 17:04Speaker 2: made it pretty, you know, Eli was just crestfallen about that.
- 17:08Speaker 2: And Wade Phillips. And it was pretty funny hearing from
- 17:12Speaker 2: him as well. They were saying, you know, at one point,
- 17:15Speaker 2: you know, with all the points being scored, Peyton asked him,
- 17:17Speaker 2: he said, what.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Do you think of this? He goes, well, not my
- 17:21Speaker 1: kind of game.
- 17:21Speaker 2: He goes, and really and truly, he says, the defense,
- 17:25Speaker 2: they're only having trouble stopping two plays.
- 17:28Speaker 1: The run and the pass.
- 17:29Speaker 5: So.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Oh, and you put it that way.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:33Speaker 2: So, anyway, Cowboys get to win, an important win. Some
- 17:38Speaker 2: would have said must win, however you want to describe it.
- 17:41Speaker 2: First of all, there was the locker room excitement and celebrated,
- 17:45Speaker 2: led by their head coach, Brian Schottenheimer.
- 17:48Speaker 10: Hey, number one, outstanding mindset. No one's surprised by the
- 17:52Speaker 10: way we played tonight as a football team. No one. Okay,
- 17:54Speaker 10: that's a standard. Okay, hell of a job. Second half,
- 17:57Speaker 10: I thought was outstanding. Okay, by our whole football team.
- 18:00Speaker 10: That's what it comes down to. Now, hey, here we go.
- 18:05Speaker 10: We got to get the fuck out of here. We
- 18:07Speaker 10: got to get back to Dallas. We got a game in.
- 18:10Speaker 10: We got a game in like six days. Here we go.
- 18:13Speaker 14: Brandon Aubrey had a 55-yard field goal.
- 18:16Speaker 12: Brandon Aubrey had a 27-yard field goal. Brandon Aubrey had
- 18:19Speaker 12: a 24-yard field goal.
- 18:21Speaker 11: Hey, we had sacks.
- 18:22Speaker 10: Easy had a sack. Q had a sack. And maybe
- 18:26Speaker 10: the best pregame talk ever.
- 18:28Speaker 12: Hey, D-Mo had an interception.
- 18:33Speaker 10: All right, here we go. Here we go, here we go.
- 18:36Speaker 12: CD had a touchdown. Pickens had a touchdown. CD had
- 18:40Speaker 12: no touchdown. Javon did a rush touchdown. Dak Prescott threw one, two,
- 18:46Speaker 12: three touchdowns.
- 18:48Speaker 10: And he had a two-point conversion.
- 18:51Speaker 14: But maybe the best stat of the night, maybe.
- 18:54Speaker 12: The best stat of the night, Javante Williams went for 150.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Okay, Ola!
- 19:09Speaker 10: Okay, Ola! Okay, Ola!
- 19:13Speaker 3: Okay, Ola!
- 19:15Speaker 10: Okay, Ola! Hey, here we go. Hey, listen up.
- 19:21Speaker 14: Hey, listen up.
- 19:24Speaker 10: Hey, at the end of the day, we talked about today.
- 19:27Speaker 10: They just kept poking us, man. They just kept poking us. Hey,
- 19:30Speaker 10: all of a sudden, we just took a big bite. Please,
- 19:33Speaker 10: let's do what we do.
- 19:35Speaker 14: He came back into a house he's been in a while,
- 19:38Speaker 14: and he did a great job leading the defense.
- 19:40Speaker 10: Christian Parker.
- 19:40Speaker 13: Hey, appreciate y'all boys, man. Let's keep on stacking them, man.
- 19:58Speaker 12: Good game, let's just keep stacking them.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Gang on me, gang on three, one, two, three.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Okay, such language from a guy who claims to be
- 20:07Speaker 1: so tight in his faith.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Shot him pretty excited about that. And then you might
- 20:14Speaker 2: have noticed a little bit of an edge.
- 20:17Speaker 1: And I referred to this, a lot of people were
- 20:21Speaker 1: referring to Arch Manning's demeanor last week because, again, a
- 20:26Speaker 1: question for the head coach, not just blurting out stuff,
- 20:31Speaker 1: but a question, how would he describe how Arch had
- 20:34Speaker 1: been during the week?
- 20:35Speaker 2: And Sark said edgy. He said he'd had an edge
- 20:38Speaker 2: to him. And so we all started talking about and
- 20:41Speaker 2: seeing edgy arch over the weekend. Well, this was edgy
- 20:44Speaker 2: shoddy because the rumblings and grumblings had increased and a
- 20:51Speaker 2: lot of speculation from the media. So keep that in mind.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Because you're going to hear every sound bite from the
- 20:59Speaker 2: press conference. And trust me, it's not going to take long.
- 21:02Speaker 2: First of all, how desperate, there's a buzzword that coaches
- 21:06Speaker 2: don't like to hear, how desperate for a win was
- 21:11Speaker 2: he tonight?
- 21:12Speaker 15: We played really good tonight, second half. Had nothing to
- 21:15Speaker 15: do with desperation. Our guys just played good.
- 21:18Speaker 3: All right.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Have you noticed he's already, the demeanor has already gone
- 21:21Speaker 2: down quite a bit from what it was like in
- 21:23Speaker 2: the locker room.
- 21:24Speaker 1: What do you think of his offense?
- 21:25Speaker 5: Very good. Solid.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Good balance. All of two seconds there.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Imagine if I did that to you to start a show.
- 21:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 3: How was your night?
- 21:34Speaker 7: It was good.
- 21:35Speaker 5: It was good.
- 21:35Speaker 1: It was okay.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Was a fan taunting you after the game because there
- 21:40Speaker 2: appeared to be some sort of fan exchange happening?
- 21:43Speaker 4: I didn't hear it.
- 21:45Speaker 8: No.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I did that to other people. Yeah. I had headphones on.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Okay. His thoughts on the running game?
- 21:52Speaker 15: I'm going to start with the offensive line. They were outstanding.
- 21:56Speaker 15: Great run plan. But Javante, man, the power, the acceleration
- 22:01Speaker 15: was there tonight.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Looked great.
- 22:03Speaker 15: And then I'm going to talk about Goody as well.
- 22:04Speaker 15: I mean, great change of pace overall. I thought the
- 22:06Speaker 15: run game was really good. Receivers blocked well. It was
- 22:09Speaker 15: a good night.
- 22:09Speaker 5: All right.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Did the run game success they have felt like what
- 22:13Speaker 2: they had a lot of last year?
- 22:14Speaker 11: Felt good.
- 22:15Speaker 15: You know, I thought Dak played awesome. I thought we
- 22:17Speaker 15: were good on third down. You know, 204 yards rushing.
- 22:21Speaker 15: That's pretty good. So I thought it was good.
- 22:24Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:24Speaker 5: All right.
- 22:25Speaker 1: How about his defense?
- 22:27Speaker 15: Again, you know, we got to be a little bit
- 22:28Speaker 15: better against the run. You know, third down, we tightened
- 22:30Speaker 15: up a little bit in the second half. But all
- 22:33Speaker 15: in all, you hold the team to 21 points. That
- 22:36Speaker 15: gives us a chance.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Okay, now you heard that locker room celebration. We just
- 22:40Speaker 2: aired it for you. So Sean Ambrose asked, what was
- 22:42Speaker 2: it like in that locker room?
- 22:44Speaker 1: Guys were excited.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been a couple weeks.
- 22:47Speaker 15: Coming but they were excited but uh we're ready for
- 22:49Speaker 15: arizona we play here in a couple days.
- 22:51Speaker 2: It's a little bit different there right okay uh this
- 22:54Speaker 2: is the longest sound bite of the entire deal how
- 22:56Speaker 2: did he feel overall that they played uh outstanding any.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Area that stood out to you maybe more.
- 23:02Speaker 15: Than others uh yeah just the patience and poise in
- 23:05Speaker 15: the pocket i thought jumped off the film you know
- 23:07Speaker 15: anytime you you know score throw the three touchdowns like
- 23:10Speaker 15: that the two-point conversion was great uh he looked like
- 23:13Speaker 15: um you know um he was in control out there
- 23:15Speaker 15: all night Okay.
- 23:17Speaker 9: All right.
- 23:17Speaker 1: All of 17 seconds there. All right.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Uh, how good was it to get to Marvin over
- 23:22Speaker 2: shown back on the field? It was a great play.
- 23:23Speaker 15: Number one, uh, a lot like these last week, uh,
- 23:26Speaker 15: the catch was awesome. Put us into a four minute
- 23:29Speaker 15: situation and, uh, it was awesome to see him back
- 23:31Speaker 15: out there along with Kobe Durant and guys like that.
- 23:33Speaker 2: George Pickens made a great catch in the corner of
- 23:36Speaker 2: the end zone. Certainly, uh, Jake was happy about cause
- 23:38Speaker 2: it helped his fantasy football team. Uh, what do you
- 23:40Speaker 2: think of Pickens performance? Solid, you know, again, uh, Spread
- 23:44Speaker 2: the ball around. We wanted to run it some more tonight.
- 23:46Speaker 7: We did that.
- 23:46Speaker 15: But any time those two guys get out, especially one-on-one,
- 23:50Speaker 15: I'm talking about CeeDee and.
- 23:51Speaker 4: George, they're tough to defend.
- 23:52Speaker 5: All right.
- 23:53Speaker 2: The oft-discussed green dot that goes on the helmet and
- 23:56Speaker 2: on the defense, it's almost always a linebacker or a safety.
- 24:00Speaker 2: In this case, Shamar James, he started with the green
- 24:03Speaker 2: dot at linebacker.
- 24:04Speaker 15: Yeah, he's earned it. Great control of what we're doing.
- 24:07Speaker 15: Awesome job with the green dot. And just proud of
- 24:12Speaker 15: his command.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Think about what the Cowboys have coming up now. They
- 24:16Speaker 2: play the Cardinals this Sunday. Then I think they go
- 24:18Speaker 2: to Indianapolis. Then maybe it's... Is it the Commanders? And
- 24:23Speaker 2: then the 49ers?
- 24:24Speaker 6: I think San Fran is first.
- 24:26Speaker 5: And.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll double-check that for you.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Well, Arizona's first this week.
- 24:31Speaker 6: Yeah, I think they get the Niners before the Commanders. Which,
- 24:34Speaker 6: by the way, if you like Eagles football, you can
- 24:37Speaker 6: see them in primetime again next week against Washington.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Oh, that's right. Is that the Sunday night game?
- 24:41Speaker 6: It is, and I guess it's too early in the
- 24:43Speaker 6: season to flex. Because they would flex out of that
- 24:46Speaker 6: if they could. Yeah, they would flex harder than Mark
- 24:49Speaker 6: Henry on that.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Oh, boy.
- 24:56Speaker 2: So anyway, the Cowboys have a pretty manageable time with
- 25:01Speaker 2: the schedule. coming up they have that is that's the
- 25:04Speaker 2: point of this if the cardinals they have what the commanders.
- 25:07Speaker 6: Cardinals cowboy i mean excuse me cardinals colts niners yeah
- 25:11Speaker 6: titans which is even easier than the commanders okay then
- 25:14Speaker 6: the eagles again they don't see the commanders again until
- 25:16Speaker 6: the end of the year.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Okay all right so titans instead uh okay so it's
- 25:20Speaker 2: all very uh very manageable other than maybe that san
- 25:24Speaker 2: francisco game so how important is it to get this
- 25:27Speaker 2: run started with arizona.
- 25:29Speaker 15: Think about this one tonight really important you know want
- 25:32Speaker 15: to play well again next week and be a good
- 25:34Speaker 15: arizona team.
- 25:35Speaker 2: All right he was also asked is the performance he
- 25:37Speaker 2: got from quinn and williams what he expected.
- 25:42Speaker 15: He's been great all week you know he was fired
- 25:44Speaker 15: up about this op and uh did a tremendous job
- 25:47Speaker 15: just you know wreaking havoc.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Inside okay all right and then uh the the tail
- 25:52Speaker 2: end of the press conference by now the media is
- 25:53Speaker 2: kind of puzzled about all these short answers you see.
- 25:56Speaker 3: The little short I'm not as exuberant as.
- 26:00Speaker 10: You've been in the past.
- 26:01Speaker 5: No.
- 26:02Speaker 4: I'm great. Excited for our guys.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Thanks. That's it. Valid question.
- 26:07Speaker 3: I mean, he's usually, you know, gushing when they win.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Total thing went about four minutes about that. Okay.
- 26:17Speaker 2: I want to jump to Jerry Jones, who was on 105.3
- 26:20Speaker 2: The Fan this morning. He was asked, first of all,
- 26:22Speaker 2: in the Thoughts, about his offense and how much he
- 26:25Speaker 2: was pleased with that.
- 26:26Speaker 5: You saw some great play by our outside folks, our receivers.
- 26:31Speaker 5: They blocked well as well. But, boy, I am proud
- 26:35Speaker 5: of that offensive line. When you can move them out
- 26:38Speaker 5: like that, and you're right, they've got an outstanding defensive line.
- 26:43Speaker 1: When you can move them out, when you get running
- 26:44Speaker 1: room like that, you've got a running.
- 26:46Speaker 5: Back that knows how to find those soft spots, which
- 26:49Speaker 5: is his forte. He does. He just has a lean.
- 26:53Speaker 5: It reminds me the way that he can find soft
- 26:57Speaker 5: spot and power through tackles, make things happen. Reminds me
- 27:01Speaker 5: of the strength and power that Emmitt Smith showed. And
- 27:05Speaker 5: you always get in trouble when you start making these comparisons.
- 27:08Speaker 5: But that was a great night for him, a great
- 27:10Speaker 5: night for us.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Yeah, the problem with that with regard to Saquon Barkley,
- 27:16Speaker 2: you know, that kind of, he had a, you know,
- 27:19Speaker 2: He had a back issue and a hamstring issue and
- 27:21Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. So talking about Javante Williams, yeah,
- 27:25Speaker 2: you might be getting yourself into trouble if you compare
- 27:27Speaker 2: him to Emmitt Smith. But he had a great game,
- 27:29Speaker 2: no doubt about it. We're going to hear more from Jerry,
- 27:32Speaker 2: including his thoughts on that Troy Aikman, ESPN, Joe Buck
- 27:37Speaker 2: kerfuffle thing.
- 27:39Speaker 1: We'll do that coming up.
- 27:40Speaker 2: We're also going to hear from Dak Prescott a little
- 27:42Speaker 2: bit later on.
- 27:44Speaker 1: But coming up next.
- 27:46Speaker 2: it's inconceivable here on a Tuesday, right here on Sports
- 27:49Speaker 2: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
- 28:02Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone. Craig Way alongside the producer, Jake Herman.
- 28:05Speaker 1: We're with you up until 5 o'clock.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Coming up in a few minutes, we'll visit with Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief,
- 28:09Speaker 2: Dave Campbell's texas football magazine and we go uh back
- 28:13Speaker 2: to some sound and bring that to you uh hearing
- 28:17Speaker 2: from longhorn players and uh as as they prepare for
- 28:23Speaker 2: this matchup with mississippi state in case you did not
- 28:26Speaker 2: hear it camario taylor the uh quarterback for mississippi state
- 28:32Speaker 2: it has been ruled out and is going to miss
- 28:33Speaker 2: the rest of the regular season is to have to
- 28:35Speaker 2: have surgery on that toe that's Kept him hobbling in
- 28:39Speaker 2: and out of the lineup. So, tough situation for him.
- 28:47Speaker 2: But the Longhorns, nevertheless, are preparing for an opponent. And
- 28:52Speaker 2: Michael Masunis, the Longhorns' tight end, was asked about... You know,
- 29:00Speaker 2: he was asked multiple questions about getting the lead and
- 29:04Speaker 2: then the lead getting away and them responding.
- 29:07Speaker 1: And all this.
- 29:07Speaker 2: So the question was, what has to change to hold
- 29:11Speaker 2: those leads that they go into the third quarter holding?
- 29:14Speaker 8: I think we just got to do our 111th. If
- 29:17Speaker 8: one thing goes wrong, you can see what happens out there.
- 29:20Speaker 8: And I think we just got to stay ahead of
- 29:22Speaker 8: the chains because when we are able to get good
- 29:24Speaker 8: chunk yards on first and second down, it gets us
- 29:26Speaker 8: out of third and long, and that definitely.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Helps us out a lot.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Sark in his press conference yesterday talked about that relief
- 29:32Speaker 2: syndrome thing. That can also be described as going into
- 29:37Speaker 2: this week about a mental hangover.
- 29:39Speaker 1: So how does this team avoid.
- 29:41Speaker 8: That i think it just comes down to her flushing
- 29:44Speaker 8: it like flush what's happened the good or the bad
- 29:47Speaker 8: and then just go on to your next week well while.
- 29:49Speaker 3: That's hard to do i think it's something that we're learning.
- 29:52Speaker 7: To do as a team Okay.
- 29:54Speaker 6: All right.
- 29:55Speaker 1: There was there.
- 29:55Speaker 2: And, of course, remember, this is a guy who transferred
- 29:57Speaker 2: in from Michigan State. So he's asked about what the
- 30:01Speaker 2: home game experience has been like for him.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Was it everything he hoped it might be?
- 30:07Speaker 5: I love it.
- 30:09Speaker 8: I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. The fans are awesome.
- 30:11Speaker 8: They're so energetic. It definitely is getting me going more
- 30:15Speaker 8: as I'm out there on the field. I'm loving everyone's energy,
- 30:17Speaker 8: and it's just awesome.
- 30:18Speaker 7: To be here.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Longhorns center Connor Robertson. was talking about the competition in
- 30:23Speaker 2: the SEC and how that's gone the grind going up
- 30:27Speaker 2: against those defensive linemen that come down in conference play.
- 30:30Speaker 16: Yeah, man, I mean, I think the best, the linemen
- 30:32Speaker 16: in the country play in this conference week in and
- 30:36Speaker 16: week out.
- 30:38Speaker 7: And there's no bad teams in this conference. Like every
- 30:40Speaker 7: week you.
- 30:40Speaker 16: Got to be 100% prepared and focused.
- 30:44Speaker 7: So, yeah, I mean, it's a cool opportunity to be
- 30:48Speaker 7: able to play in it.
- 30:49Speaker 2: All right, and then here's another one of those when
- 30:51Speaker 2: did you stop beating your wife questions. In other words,
- 30:55Speaker 2: almost no answer you can give if you answered the
- 30:59Speaker 2: question directly as it was phrased would be favorable to you.
- 31:03Speaker 2: The question was, is it human nature to have a
- 31:06Speaker 2: letdown versus Mississippi State?
- 31:08Speaker 7: No, I don't look at it like that, man. I
- 31:10Speaker 7: think they're a really good football team.
- 31:13Speaker 16: If you look at it like that, like Hero said,
- 31:15Speaker 16: in this conference you're going to going to get beat.
- 31:18Speaker 7: So you can't look at it like that. And they're
- 31:21Speaker 7: a very good football team.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Speaking of Hiro, Hiro Kanu was asked about the SEC
- 31:26Speaker 2: competition going up against the SEC offensive linemen.
- 31:30Speaker 11: Every week, you know, it's a great back. It's a
- 31:32Speaker 11: great quarterback.
- 31:34Speaker 17: Always a big O-line, good O-line, you know, fast receivers.
- 31:37Speaker 17: And this is an any given Saturday league, you know,
- 31:40Speaker 17: like if you don't show up and show out, you're
- 31:43Speaker 17: going to lose.
- 31:44Speaker 11: So you're going to come prepared every single week.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Yeah, he was also asked to execute the defensive game
- 31:50Speaker 1: plan well.
- 31:51Speaker 11: We're close. I would say nobody's perfect. Nobody's game is perfect.
- 31:54Speaker 11: There were still a couple sprinkles that we got to
- 31:57Speaker 11: tighten up. But I think overall, we did a good
- 31:59Speaker 11: job executing the game plan.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Okay, and then one more.
- 32:02Speaker 2: He was asked about this whole Mamba mentality thing that
- 32:05Speaker 2: came up and was repeated throughout the course of the
- 32:08Speaker 2: press conference, first with Sark and then with players.
- 32:10Speaker 17: What does that mean to him? I mean, he's not
- 32:11Speaker 17: getting complacent, you know. You know, you can't be complacent. Just,
- 32:16Speaker 17: you know, what to call it, like rest now. You know,
- 32:20Speaker 17: it's still go time. It can't be, oh, all happy.
- 32:23Speaker 17: We just won the last game. The last game is over.
- 32:25Speaker 17: We're already talking about the next one. So that's really
- 32:28Speaker 17: what it is.
- 32:29Speaker 11: Moving on.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:31Speaker 2: You know, Alex January had a big block. I got
- 32:33Speaker 2: a hand on that field goal attempt that would have,
- 32:35Speaker 2: at the time, Cut it to 31-27. So he was asked,
- 32:39Speaker 2: how did the defensive line feed off of that block
- 32:41Speaker 2: from January?
- 32:42Speaker 11: We're all super hyped. We're really tight as a unit,
- 32:45Speaker 11: including the edges.
- 32:47Speaker 17: So we went out there and, you know, he just
- 32:48Speaker 17: told me like, hey, I'm getting skinny through the hole
- 32:50Speaker 17: right there.
- 32:50Speaker 7: I'm like, okay, bet.
- 32:52Speaker 17: And we watched, you know, the teen clip today, and
- 32:55Speaker 17: that was like the white copy. You see me like jumping,
- 32:57Speaker 17: high-stepping through the frame after Alex blocked it. Just super
- 33:01Speaker 17: happy for him because he was ready when the moment
- 33:04Speaker 17: was called for him, you know. We asked him to
- 33:05Speaker 17: block it, and he did it. Everybody on the sideline
- 33:08Speaker 17: was engaged, was happy for him.
- 33:10Speaker 11: It was amazing.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Okay, all right.
- 33:12Speaker 2: And then, you know, Justin Cryer was asked about what
- 33:17Speaker 2: his relationship was has been like since transferring him from
- 33:21Speaker 2: Florida State?
- 33:21Speaker 1: What has the relationship with his head coach been like?
- 33:23Speaker 18: You know, he's just given me, like, just a once-in-a-lifetime
- 33:26Speaker 18: opportunity to be here, and, you know, I never want
- 33:29Speaker 18: to take that for granted, and, you know, for him
- 33:31Speaker 18: to trust me as much as he does, and obviously,
- 33:33Speaker 18: you know, I have to earn my way around here, and,
- 33:35Speaker 18: you know, just constantly put in work and earn respect
- 33:39Speaker 18: to my teammates, but, you know, he gave me an
- 33:40Speaker 18: opportunity here, and that's all I can really ask for,
- 33:42Speaker 18: so I'm always super appreciative of him, and, you know,
- 33:45Speaker 18: I'm you know being able to do that that moment
- 33:49Speaker 18: those moments with him after the games I'm saying the
- 33:51Speaker 18: fine song kind of being able to be in that
- 33:52Speaker 18: moment with him you know I'm just super appreciative of
- 33:55Speaker 18: it I'm super grateful for him and you know that's
- 33:57Speaker 18: my guy.
- 33:58Speaker 2: All right another one of his guys is guys right
- 34:00Speaker 2: beside him in the linebacking corps Raheem Biles.
- 34:03Speaker 18: We were put together pretty early when we got here
- 34:06Speaker 18: from being in the weight room at the same rack
- 34:09Speaker 18: to being in the same rotation zone when we do
- 34:12Speaker 18: walkthroughs in the winter like everything we were always put
- 34:14Speaker 18: together so We just spent a lot of time with
- 34:16Speaker 18: each other. And through that process, through the spring, whenever
- 34:19Speaker 18: we started playing spring ball, we were always in together.
- 34:21Speaker 18: We kind of just built the natural chemistry. And just
- 34:25Speaker 18: through that process, we've been able to kind of feed
- 34:28Speaker 18: off each other. And a lot of times during game planning,
- 34:30Speaker 18: like today, on Mondays, we go and sit down in
- 34:32Speaker 18: the linebacker room.
- 34:34Speaker 11: We'll talk over some things that we see.
- 34:35Speaker 18: And we were talking about last week, like this meeting
- 34:37Speaker 18: we had last week, we were saying, like, there are
- 34:40Speaker 18: certain concepts that we felt we could jump. And we
- 34:41Speaker 18: were talking about it, like, One of us is going
- 34:43Speaker 18: to get an interception in this game. We're both going
- 34:45Speaker 18: to get it. But we were saying, like, one of
- 34:46Speaker 18: us is going to get it. We don't know who
- 34:47Speaker 18: it's going to be or where on the field at.
- 34:49Speaker 18: But because we knew what we were going to get
- 34:51Speaker 18: in certain formations, we kind of felt like one of
- 34:53Speaker 18: us was going to jump it. And before that play,
- 34:55Speaker 18: we kind of shared a look that we kind of
- 34:56Speaker 18: knew what we were going to get out of it.
- 34:58Speaker 18: And it ended up being me. But he was also there, too.
- 35:00Speaker 18: He could have picked it off himself. So he already
- 35:02Speaker 18: took a pick from me this year. So I'm glad
- 35:03Speaker 18: I got it this time.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Okay.
- 35:05Speaker 5: All right.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Okay.
- 35:08Speaker 1: And then since.
- 35:09Speaker 2: He got an interception and Biles got an interception, does
- 35:12Speaker 2: that put pressure on the secondary to make sure that
- 35:15Speaker 2: they're holding up their end of the deal?
- 35:18Speaker 11: We may have.
- 35:18Speaker 18: Something to say to them a little bit, but they
- 35:21Speaker 18: did a good job this past weekend being in coverage. Actually,
- 35:26Speaker 18: when I tipped, that bow was for sure going to
- 35:28Speaker 18: pick off.
- 35:28Speaker 10: He read the route perfectly.
- 35:30Speaker 11: He broke on it.
- 35:32Speaker 18: I got my hands on it, and the ball sailed
- 35:34Speaker 18: over his head, but I didn't touch that ball, but
- 35:35Speaker 18: I was going to pick it off. So as much
- 35:36Speaker 18: as we like to mess with them a little bit,
- 35:38Speaker 18: they played a phenomenal game as well, and we're going
- 35:40Speaker 18: to keep playing for us.
- 35:41Speaker 2: All right, we'll hear from him coming up next hour.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Up next, we visit with Greg Chepard, the editor-in-chief of
- 35:47Speaker 2: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Our weekly conversation are Tuesdays
- 35:51Speaker 2: with Chepard. Coming up on Sports Radio AM 13 Under
- 35:54Speaker 2: the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Well, you got my
- 35:58Speaker 2: curiosity piqued here, Jake. I know we bump back in
- 36:01Speaker 2: the 3 o'clock hour with... Willie Nelson, the mere fact
- 36:05Speaker 2: that he's doing a hymn, will a circle be unbroken?
- 36:08Speaker 2: Is this because we're getting ready to talk to Greg
- 36:11Speaker 2: Tepper about the Baylor job or about Texas Tech?
- 36:15Speaker 1: Is that what this is all about here? Is that
- 36:16Speaker 1: what you're saying?
- 36:17Speaker 6: You know, I thought of your comment yesterday about kind
- 36:20Speaker 6: of the circle of parody in the SEC. Maybe that
- 36:23Speaker 6: was an inspiration, but you guys can choose to take
- 36:25Speaker 6: it that direction.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Okay, just double checking on that. It is time for
- 36:30Speaker 2: our weekly conversation with Greg Tepper, the editor-in-chief of Dave
- 36:33Speaker 2: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. First of all, and this is
- 36:36Speaker 2: apropos of nothing of football, I want to get your
- 36:38Speaker 2: thoughts on this. You're a parent of two boys. Do
- 36:41Speaker 2: both of them play sports?
- 36:44Speaker 3: Yes. Max is playing T-ball this year for the first time.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 36:49Speaker 2: I read a story last hour about two parents down
- 36:53Speaker 2: in Sugar Land. who got into it in a select
- 36:56Speaker 2: girls 12-year-old softball game that led to blows and one
- 37:00Speaker 2: guy hitting another guy with a metal drinking container. And
- 37:05Speaker 2: that guy got hospitalized, and the guy who swung the
- 37:07Speaker 2: container got sent to jail. So did the mom, who
- 37:11Speaker 2: is an assistant principal at... Lamar Junior High School in
- 37:15Speaker 2: the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. So I told Jake,
- 37:19Speaker 2: if the projections from Jerry Forrest are correct and Bastrop
- 37:23Speaker 2: winds up playing Lamar Consolidated in the bi-district round, he
- 37:26Speaker 2: better be on his toes. But I was going to
- 37:28Speaker 2: ask you, you haven't encountered any parental.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Issues in any of those youth games, have you?
- 37:37Speaker 10: No, no.
- 37:38Speaker 3: And my kids are, they're seven and four.
- 37:41Speaker 19: And so it's still relatively low stakes, although not as
- 37:45Speaker 19: low as you'd think.
- 37:46Speaker 3: And we haven't encountered that. The biggest issue.
- 37:49Speaker 19: Has been snack time afterwards, as far as, oh, wait,
- 37:54Speaker 19: my son wanted the blue sports drink instead of.
- 37:59Speaker 3: The green one or something like that. That's been the
- 38:02Speaker 3: most we've come up with it.
- 38:03Speaker 19: But yeah, now I will say before in a past life,
- 38:07Speaker 19: when I was in high school, my job.
- 38:09Speaker 3: I was a YMCA referee.
- 38:12Speaker 19: And I was a softball umpire for the local softball group.
- 38:17Speaker 19: And so I have immense respect for officials because I
- 38:19Speaker 19: have been there. I've been on the business end of
- 38:22Speaker 19: officials officiating there. YMCA basketball was, you know, it was okay,
- 38:27Speaker 19: especially like five and six-year-olds. That was easy money. At
- 38:31Speaker 19: the time, I was getting paid $ 10 a game, which was...
- 38:35Speaker 19: I was rolling it Saturdays. But then softball, yeah. Especially
- 38:41Speaker 19: when things got a little bit more competitive, the girls
- 38:43Speaker 19: got to be like 11 or 12. Then like, you know,
- 38:45Speaker 19: I had to be on my P's and Q's, but
- 38:47Speaker 19: I think it taught me important leadership lessons.
- 38:50Speaker 2: By one of our regular texters, our man CPAL said,
- 38:54Speaker 2: select ball is dangerous at times.
- 38:56Speaker 1: How would you like to teach their kids in school? Yeah, well,
- 38:59Speaker 1: it's a good question.
- 39:00Speaker 5: Oh, man.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Speaking of dangerous, all right. We'll get back to Baylor
- 39:05Speaker 2: in a moment. Let me start with Texas Tech. Not
- 39:09Speaker 2: only the loss, which of course stunned some people, but
- 39:13Speaker 2: it opened up Pandora's box of all the comments with
- 39:16Speaker 2: super booster donor Cody Campbell, chairman of the Board of Regents,
- 39:20Speaker 2: who had a few months earlier in expressing frustration of
- 39:24Speaker 2: the whole Brennan Soresby thing, said that, I think to
- 39:27Speaker 2: paraphrase him, when we're up 40 this fall and throwing
- 39:31Speaker 2: into the end zone in the fourth quarter, you'll know
- 39:32Speaker 2: we're not letting up or something like that. So then
- 39:35Speaker 2: they lose, and then he gets a lot of grief
- 39:39Speaker 2: from a lot of people about this, including a young
- 39:44Speaker 2: producer who I kind of almost likened to Jake a
- 39:46Speaker 2: little bit, about the same age, working at the flagship station,
- 39:50Speaker 2: They're a double T-97-3, just as Jake works here at
- 39:53Speaker 2: the flagship for the Horns.
- 39:55Speaker 1: And his name is Brennan Riker.
- 39:57Speaker 2: And on Saturday, after Cody Campbell had posted this tweet,
- 40:02Speaker 2: there is no excuse or reason to lose a game
- 40:05Speaker 2: like this.
- 40:06Speaker 1: We have to be better. That was his text.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Riker said, for the sake of the program and fan base,
- 40:12Speaker 2: just stop talking.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Please stop tweeting. Now, think about that. That's a mid-20s guy.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Working as a producer at the flagship telling this multi-billionaire
- 40:22Speaker 2: booster to knock it off. So Campbell then responds with, yesterday,
- 40:29Speaker 2: how about for the sake of the program, everybody at
- 40:32Speaker 2: Texas Tech stops talking and doing interviews with Double T 97.3.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Robert Gio, let's discuss.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Robert Giovinetti, he used to be part of the radio network,
- 40:41Speaker 2: works in the in the administration office.
- 40:44Speaker 1: So this thing looks.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Like a little bit of a brush fire out on
- 40:47Speaker 2: the South Plains.
- 40:50Speaker 3: What? Like, what are we doing here?
- 40:53Speaker 11: Like, this is so.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Like, Cody Campbell.
- 41:00Speaker 19: is at a point now where I wonder if somebody
- 41:03Speaker 19: needs to consider taking away his phone. I don't mean
- 41:08Speaker 19: any disrespect to the young man who started this, but
- 41:13Speaker 19: this guy's got 250 followers. It's not like Michael Irvin
- 41:18Speaker 19: is tweeting about you or someone with a.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Huge reach.
- 41:22Speaker 19: This is a producer at a local radio show. Like,
- 41:25Speaker 19: we do not have to fight every battle. And especially,
- 41:29Speaker 19: by the way, respectfully, I think he's got a point.
- 41:32Speaker 19: And we talked about this whenever the Brendan Swordsby thing
- 41:35Speaker 19: was going on about how we felt like Texas Tech's
- 41:39Speaker 19: message discipline problem was one of the reasons that they
- 41:43Speaker 19: got into that, that the brand sort of thing became
- 41:46Speaker 19: as big.
- 41:46Speaker 5: As it was.
- 41:47Speaker 19: And if everybody would have just cooled off and taken
- 41:49Speaker 19: a step back, then everything kind of, it would have
- 41:52Speaker 19: been a simmer, but it wouldn't have been this boiling
- 41:54Speaker 19: over that it was. And it appears that no lessons
- 41:58Speaker 19: were learned. Or if there were lessons, the wrong.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Lessons were learned. I just don't understand. Is he bored?
- 42:08Speaker 19: That's the kind of thing that sometimes when I was
- 42:11Speaker 19: in my younger days.
- 42:13Speaker 3: And I would be on Twitter, I'd be like, you
- 42:15Speaker 3: know what?
- 42:15Speaker 4: I'm bored.
- 42:16Speaker 3: I'll go start a fight. I'll go tweet something just
- 42:19Speaker 3: to get a rise out of people.
- 42:21Speaker 19: And now it's like, I don't know, then I turned
- 42:26Speaker 19: 30 and decided.
- 42:27Speaker 3: That that was the time to put away childish things.
- 42:30Speaker 11: I don't know.
- 42:31Speaker 3: It is a bizarre situation.
- 42:32Speaker 19: And I think it also kind of speaks to maybe
- 42:36Speaker 19: some of the underlying wobbliness underneath Texas Tech's program that
- 42:41Speaker 19: we put on the cover of the magazine about how
- 42:42Speaker 19: this is the way the modern college football machine operates.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Well, okay, whatever.
- 42:47Speaker 19: If you pull back the curtain, is it just the
- 42:50Speaker 19: great Oz back there? What's going on there that if
- 42:53Speaker 19: one loss is going to suddenly send this program into turmoil,
- 42:58Speaker 19: then was your program that strong to begin with?
- 43:01Speaker 3: And I don't know.
- 43:03Speaker 19: It's one of the things where that's one of the
- 43:05Speaker 19: dangers of having an outspoken booster program. who nobody can
- 43:10Speaker 19: really say no to, kind of in a prominent position
- 43:14Speaker 19: within the program. It's a bizarre situation that I can't
- 43:20Speaker 19: necessarily say is a master class in communications management.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so maybe what you're suggesting is that Cody Campbell
- 43:29Speaker 2: should paraphrase the great and powerful Oz by saying, I'm
- 43:33Speaker 2: a good man, I'm a very bad wizard.
- 43:36Speaker 19: Let me use a more modern phrase for that. If
- 43:41Speaker 19: that movie from the 30s is too dated, go touch
- 43:44Speaker 19: some grass. Just chill out a little bit. It's a
- 43:49Speaker 19: very bizarre story.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Herm Edwards, don't hit send. Don't press send. Something like that.
- 43:55Speaker 3: Take a breath.
- 43:56Speaker 2: And by the way, to Brennan Riker's credit, he had,
- 43:59Speaker 2: when he first tweeted this out, I think 167 followers.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Now he's up to 250.
- 44:04Speaker 5: Hey, okay.
- 44:05Speaker 3: That's exponential growth.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Okay, all of that goofiness aside, that
- 44:11Speaker 1: was a damaging loss, obviously, for the Red Raiders. They
- 44:13Speaker 1: got Arizona this week. It's at home, but, I mean, it's.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Still a tough— one would imagine at this point they may
- 44:20Speaker 2: have to not only reach the Big 12 championship, but
- 44:23Speaker 2: perhaps just win the auto bid at this point.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Do you think that?
- 44:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:28Speaker 19: Yeah, they're in an interesting spot because basically now you
- 44:31Speaker 19: have to consider where the Big 12 stand as far
- 44:37Speaker 19: as the rankings are concerned and kind of national profile.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Basically, are they going to get an at-large bid? is
- 44:45Speaker 3: the question. You know what I mean?
- 44:46Speaker 19: Now, I think the conference is strong enough to deserve
- 44:50Speaker 19: and warrant a bid, right? I mean, look up and
- 44:53Speaker 19: down the ranked teams. Utah is ranked. BYU is ranked.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Arizona is ranked.
- 44:58Speaker 4: Tech is ranked.
- 44:59Speaker 19: Oklahoma State is ranked. Houston, I believe, is still ranked, right?
- 45:03Speaker 19: It's a good conference. But much like it's one of
- 45:08Speaker 19: the things we talked about as a real value in
- 45:10Speaker 19: the offseason, that Texas Tech schedule was lacking some of
- 45:14Speaker 19: the real heavy hitters. Well, now maybe you wish those
- 45:19Speaker 19: heavy hitters were on there because if you get to
- 45:21Speaker 19: the end of the year and you don't necessarily have
- 45:22Speaker 19: the resume that you were hoping for, and you're hoping
- 45:25Speaker 19: for an out large bid that may not be there
- 45:27Speaker 19: for you because you didn't go through and play some
- 45:30Speaker 19: of the teams that, that were at the, at the
- 45:31Speaker 19: top of the conference, right?
- 45:33Speaker 3: You didn't go up there and you didn't go and
- 45:34Speaker 3: beat BYU. You didn't go beat Utah.
- 45:36Speaker 19: Uh, now, you know, if they do it in the
- 45:39Speaker 19: big 12 championship, obviously that'll take care of itself. But for,
- 45:41Speaker 19: for Texas tech, at the very least, the thing that
- 45:43Speaker 19: you would say is that the margin of error has
- 45:45Speaker 19: now dissipated with what is a disappointing loss, uh, at Cincinnati,
- 45:49Speaker 19: where it just felt like the offense could not get
- 45:52Speaker 19: out of its own way.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Uh, visiting with Greg Tepper, editor in chief, Dave Campbell's
- 45:55Speaker 2: Texas football magazine. Um, So curious to get your thoughts now,
- 46:00Speaker 2: because if we're talking about Texas Tech and looking at
- 46:02Speaker 2: the rest of the schedule after Arizona this week, they
- 46:04Speaker 2: have West Virginia at home. Possible, as some folks are saying,
- 46:07Speaker 2: trap game in Stillwater at Oklahoma State.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Then they're going to be in Waco.
- 46:12Speaker 2: And what, you know, is Baylor going with Dave Aranda
- 46:17Speaker 2: having been relieved of his duties there? And you mentioned
- 46:21Speaker 2: at the start of the year, you said it was
- 46:23Speaker 2: kind of on the job watch for Aranda. They got
- 46:26Speaker 2: off to a 4-1 start.
- 46:28Speaker 1: They looked pretty good. They were on the rise.
- 46:30Speaker 2: They were on the rise in the Dave Campbell's Texas
- 46:32Speaker 2: Football Power Poll as well. What has happened to Baylor,
- 46:36Speaker 2: and now where do they go?
- 46:38Speaker 19: Yeah, it's disappointing, I think, overall, that essentially the offense
- 46:43Speaker 19: never came around in a good enough way that would
- 46:48Speaker 19: allow them to.
- 46:50Speaker 3: Save Dave Aranda's job.
- 46:52Speaker 19: They basically talked about how DJ Lagway was gonna have
- 46:54Speaker 19: to come in and kind of save Dave Aranda's job.
- 46:57Speaker 19: And I don't think it's all on, that's an unfair
- 46:59Speaker 19: thing to put on a young man. But, you know,
- 47:01Speaker 19: plain and simple that the offense wasn't good enough. You know,
- 47:05Speaker 19: you saw that, I think, on display last week in
- 47:06Speaker 19: their loss to Kansas. It was not consistent enough. And
- 47:11Speaker 19: I think that what you do is you look at the,
- 47:13Speaker 19: I think you've got to look at the sum of
- 47:15Speaker 19: the last two weeks. Losing at home TCU in a
- 47:18Speaker 19: game that was very winnable. and then losing to Kansas
- 47:22Speaker 19: for the first time in what? I thought it was
- 47:24Speaker 19: like a 20-game winning streak against Kansas or something. That's
- 47:29Speaker 19: going to do you in. And for Baylor, they've had enough.
- 47:32Speaker 19: Dave Aranda finishes 40-40 as head coach at Baylor, which
- 47:36Speaker 19: I think is pretty remarkable considering how it started and
- 47:40Speaker 19: considering how Baylor was on top of the world for
- 47:43Speaker 19: a hot minute there at the beginning of the Dave
- 47:45Speaker 19: Aranda era. But it all kind of fell apart the
- 47:48Speaker 19: past couple of years. And I think that I think
- 47:51Speaker 19: that the legacy of Dave Aranda is going to be
- 47:54Speaker 19: that he was brought in as this defensive ace.
- 47:57Speaker 3: He was brought in as this guy who was.
- 47:58Speaker 19: The name to know at LSU's defensive coordinator spot. And now,
- 48:06Speaker 19: the defense was always okay at times. They had some
- 48:09Speaker 19: times where they were really good, especially in the beginning,
- 48:10Speaker 19: they were pretty good. But the offense just never really,
- 48:13Speaker 19: after that, kind of caught up. And I think that
- 48:15Speaker 19: that Ended up being his undoing, and obviously it's disappointing
- 48:20Speaker 19: for Baylor. They'll play off the string with an interim
- 48:22Speaker 19: coach and then go into the— although I'm sure the
- 48:24Speaker 19: job search is already hard at work there, so they're
- 48:27Speaker 19: trying to figure out who's going to be the next
- 48:28Speaker 19: guy at the helm in Waco.
- 48:30Speaker 2: How difficult is it going to be for SMU to
- 48:32Speaker 2: reach the playoff, short of winning the auto bid, winning
- 48:35Speaker 2: the ACC?
- 48:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not getting any easier.
- 48:40Speaker 19: I think the fact that the— I think the fact
- 48:45Speaker 19: that SMU and the ACC has been a little bit,
- 48:49Speaker 19: you know, it's top-heavy at the very top. there with Miami.
- 48:54Speaker 19: But past that, there's just not a ton of depth there.
- 48:58Speaker 19: But that loss they had a couple of weeks ago,
- 49:02Speaker 19: I think, is really going to hurt them down the
- 49:04Speaker 19: stretch against Louisville. Now, look, what they really need is
- 49:09Speaker 19: they really need Wake Forest and Notre Dame to keep winning.
- 49:13Speaker 3: That's what they need.
- 49:14Speaker 19: Because that back-to-back game, those back-to-back games right before Thanksgiving
- 49:18Speaker 19: are going to be ultimately their big showcase opportunity to
- 49:21Speaker 19: do that. If you go and you, if you beat
- 49:23Speaker 19: Wake Forest at home and they're still nationally ranked, and
- 49:27Speaker 19: then you go on the road and beat Notre Dame
- 49:29Speaker 19: in back-to-back weeks, you're.
- 49:30Speaker 3: They'll be in. They'll find a way in.
- 49:32Speaker 19: At that point, I think that a one-loss team or
- 49:35Speaker 19: even a two-loss team with a loss in the conference
- 49:38Speaker 19: championship game would make it in there. But barring that,
- 49:43Speaker 19: it's hard to see. I think they cannot lose another game.
- 49:46Speaker 19: They have to win out at this point to have
- 49:47Speaker 19: a chance. If they win out in the regular season
- 49:49Speaker 19: and lose to Miami in a close one in the
- 49:51Speaker 19: conference championship game, yeah, okay, maybe we can talk about
- 49:54Speaker 19: what that looks like.
- 49:54Speaker 3: But I think that right now, if you're SMU, you've
- 49:56Speaker 3: got to be thinking, we've got to go out there.
- 49:57Speaker 7: And win out.
- 49:58Speaker 3: And otherwise, it's going to be curtains for them.
- 50:02Speaker 2: Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, was
- 50:05Speaker 2: with us. We talked college football. Let's jump to high
- 50:07Speaker 2: school football as well. And you've got a pretty important
- 50:12Speaker 2: matchup going on over in East Texas for your telecast
- 50:15Speaker 2: Friday night.
- 50:17Speaker 19: Yeah, we're heading to Upshur County for Gilmer and Carthage.
- 50:21Speaker 19: And they're at Jeff Traylor Stadium, speaking of potentially tied
- 50:23Speaker 19: to Baylor. But that is obviously big doings there. And
- 50:28Speaker 19: whenever they get together. It's a knockdown, dragout. Two really
- 50:33Speaker 19: high-powered offenses have been really, really good. I love what
- 50:38Speaker 19: Gilmer has been able to do with Kipton Neighbors has
- 50:42Speaker 19: been a real dynamo for them. Their quarterback as well
- 50:46Speaker 19: is all 5'5, Zade Taylor, but he is a dynamo.
- 50:51Speaker 19: running the ball and then if you guys didn't know
- 50:53Speaker 19: this they are using ismail kamara the big frenchman the
- 50:57Speaker 19: texas commit uh who all 330 pounds of them they've
- 51:00Speaker 19: got him at tight end right yeah how about that
- 51:02Speaker 19: they're lining them up they're lining up at fullback we
- 51:04Speaker 19: talked with alan metal about an hour ago he said
- 51:06Speaker 19: we'll split him out we threw him a pass last
- 51:08Speaker 19: week and he got 18 yards on it um so
- 51:12Speaker 19: it's a wild offense defense is going to be challenged
- 51:14Speaker 19: this week against jacob dixon and a high-powered carthage attack
- 51:18Speaker 19: i mean it's carthage it's scott serrat calling the plays
- 51:20Speaker 19: they're going to be really good but even though they
- 51:22Speaker 19: graduated so heavy they have figured things out with jacob
- 51:25Speaker 19: dixon uh they've got they kind of they kind of
- 51:27Speaker 19: cobbled together or they don't have a kj edwards like
- 51:30Speaker 19: they did last year but they've got three guys back
- 51:32Speaker 19: there that kind of make up the running game and
- 51:35Speaker 19: more importantly for them i think that they've got the
- 51:37Speaker 19: the best receiver core they may have ever had at
- 51:38Speaker 19: Carthage with J.D. Edwards and Bryson Price, and then a
- 51:41Speaker 19: defense that is playing really well right now that actually
- 51:44Speaker 19: had shut out Pleasant Grove into the third quarter last year,
- 51:47Speaker 19: late in the third quarter last week. And so I
- 51:49Speaker 19: think that we're in for a really good one. I'm
- 51:51Speaker 19: excited to head out to Uptree County and see some
- 51:54Speaker 19: good ball that I think has an opportunity to be pretty,
- 51:58Speaker 19: perhaps poincy, perhaps an exciting one. as these two teams
- 52:02Speaker 19: tend to play.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Folks can watch that for free if they have a subscription, texasfootball.com
- 52:06Speaker 2: for all the subscription info on that.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 52:09Speaker 2: I was perusing the list of top flight games. And there's,
- 52:14Speaker 2: as you know, there's a pass of them this week.
- 52:18Speaker 2: And I came to the conclusion that, that the best game,
- 52:24Speaker 2: in fact, I even said this to Jeff Jones, the
- 52:28Speaker 2: local sports director at KVU. They do a different game.
- 52:30Speaker 2: They call their game of the week. They go out
- 52:33Speaker 2: and cover it intensely and do stuff after. And I said,
- 52:38Speaker 2: what's your game of the week? And they said, well,
- 52:40Speaker 2: it's obvious choice.
- 52:42Speaker 1: I said, is it?
- 52:42Speaker 2: They said, yeah, it's Cedar Ridge at Westlake. I said,
- 52:45Speaker 2: it's not my obvious choice. They said, good game, good game,
- 52:49Speaker 2: good game. They said, which one is your obvious choice?
- 52:54Speaker 1: I said, 8-0 Thorndale, 9-0 Rosebud-Lott. And they're like, yes. Who? What?
- 53:01Speaker 2: And I think Corey Mosher works there and said, Thorndale,
- 53:04Speaker 2: is that in our coverage area?
- 53:05Speaker 11: I said, yes, it is.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Thorndale is. Now, Rosebud-Lott's in the super syntax, but that's
- 53:09Speaker 2: a big-time matchup this week, isn't it?
- 53:11Speaker 1: Hey.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Craig, this is why we're friends. This is why we're friends,
- 53:14Speaker 3: because you're exactly right.
- 53:15Speaker 19: I think this is, if this is not the game
- 53:16Speaker 19: of the week, it is on the extreme short list
- 53:19Speaker 19: of game of the week in the state of Texas.
- 53:22Speaker 3: 13-2A Division I title is up for grabs.
- 53:25Speaker 19: Battle of Unbeatens, there's only five Battles of Unbeatens here
- 53:27Speaker 19: in Week 9.
- 53:28Speaker 3: This is one of them.
- 53:29Speaker 19: Rosebud Law is looking to close out its first regular
- 53:32Speaker 19: season undefeated since 1995. Price were a broker. Their quarterback
- 53:37Speaker 19: has been excellent. 27 touchdowns against just one interception. And
- 53:41Speaker 19: then there's Thorndale. Thorndale is a team... The word I
- 53:45Speaker 19: keep coming back to is workmanlike. They've got a grinding
- 53:48Speaker 19: running game with Hudson, Thigpen. Their defense just thumps you
- 53:52Speaker 19: with shanker foot. They just kind of smother you. I'm
- 53:56Speaker 19: fascinated by this game. I mean, this is one of
- 53:58Speaker 19: those games... We had expectations for Thorndale, but maybe not
- 54:02Speaker 19: this high.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Rosebud Law is a real surprise.
- 54:04Speaker 19: Rosebud Law is a team that I think is kind
- 54:07Speaker 19: of coming, not necessarily coming out of nowhere, but certainly
- 54:10Speaker 19: exceeding expectations.
- 54:12Speaker 3: Fascinated by this game. I like Thorndale at home, but.
- 54:14Speaker 19: I think this is a coin flip type game. And yeah,
- 54:18Speaker 19: one of the only five matchups of unbeatens in Texas.
- 54:21Speaker 19: You can't do, in week nine, like you've got nine
- 54:24Speaker 19: over eight now. That just does, I mean, the next
- 54:27Speaker 19: time we'll have something like this, there might.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Be one, I don't want to speak out of school,
- 54:29Speaker 2: I haven't done the research.
- 54:31Speaker 3: There might be one next week, but the next time
- 54:32Speaker 3: we're going to get one of these is like Thanksgiving.
- 54:35Speaker 3: You know what I mean? So this is the good
- 54:39Speaker 3: stuff right here.
- 54:39Speaker 5: Okay.
- 54:40Speaker 8: All right.
- 54:41Speaker 2: I purposely left it out of the three games because
- 54:44Speaker 2: I knew you had a feel for it like I
- 54:45Speaker 2: did as well. So I left that one out. But
- 54:48Speaker 2: I will give you three games. And in the meanest
- 54:50Speaker 2: thing we do to one another, you pick one game.
- 54:52Speaker 2: If you couldn't be in Upshur County, you got to
- 54:54Speaker 2: be at one of these three games. And they are
- 54:56Speaker 2: as follows. Richmond Randall against Angleton. Ah, there's another battle
- 55:01Speaker 2: of unbeatens there.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Okay.
- 55:04Speaker 2: Richmond Randall hosting Angleton. That's in 5A Division I. How
- 55:08Speaker 2: about 4AD2? No, not your matchup. 7-1 Brock, 8-0 Graham.
- 55:14Speaker 1: There's one.
- 55:14Speaker 2: And then the other one, we got a 7-0 against
- 55:17Speaker 2: a 6-1. We drop down to 2AD2. Unbeaten Wheeler against
- 55:21Speaker 2: those Wellington Skyrockets who are 6-1.
- 55:25Speaker 3: If you guys couldn't tell, if listeners couldn't tell, it's
- 55:27Speaker 3: a great week.
- 55:28Speaker 19: It's a really nice week, and it's especially a great
- 55:31Speaker 19: week at the small school level. Wellington Wheeler is a
- 55:35Speaker 19: certified banger. That is going to be a ton of fun.
- 55:38Speaker 19: I'm really excited to see how that goes. Brock and
- 55:41Speaker 19: Graham is one of the very best... quarterback matchups in
- 55:46Speaker 19: the state. Brock, quarterback, Holt Frazier has been fantastic. I
- 55:49Speaker 19: think it's Corley Cooper there for Graham.
- 55:52Speaker 3: They've been excellent.
- 55:52Speaker 19: Graham has kind of flown under the radar. This is,
- 55:55Speaker 19: I think, their big level up in competition. My pick,
- 55:58Speaker 19: I'm going to be big school snob.
- 55:59Speaker 3: I'm going to go to Houston. I'm going to go
- 56:00Speaker 3: to Rosenberg for Randall and Angleton.
- 56:04Speaker 19: I'll tell you this, Randall, this is really the moment
- 56:09Speaker 19: that Randall arrives the 5A D1 program because they had
- 56:13Speaker 19: two great non-district wins, close wins, but non-district wins over
- 56:17Speaker 19: South Oak Cliff. And then you remember they won that
- 56:19Speaker 19: 3-0 game against Spring Westfield, which is 6-18, impressive, but
- 56:23Speaker 19: 3-0 nonetheless. After that, since then they got into district play,
- 56:27Speaker 19: their margin of victory in their district play so far
- 56:30Speaker 19: has been 63.5 points on average.
- 56:31Speaker 3: They have been crushing people.
- 56:35Speaker 19: And of course, Lennon Williams Callis, who has a shot
- 56:37Speaker 19: at becoming the state's all-time leading rusher in the Texas commit,
- 56:40Speaker 19: he's a straw that stirs a drink.
- 56:41Speaker 3: But the defense for them has been excellent. Cameron Hippolite
- 56:43Speaker 3: leading the way, the number 10 scoring defense in all
- 56:45Speaker 3: of Texas. This is their.
- 56:48Speaker 19: test, though, because now they take on an Angleton team
- 56:50Speaker 19: that is undefeated, and a spectacular running game led by
- 56:54Speaker 19: Jaden Moore. They've got an average of more than 10
- 56:56Speaker 19: yards to carry. Their defense is smothering. They got Quentin
- 57:00Speaker 19: Jammer's kid on there, Cason Jammer, who is making big
- 57:04Speaker 19: noise for them, John David Britton.
- 57:06Speaker 3: They've forced 18 turnovers in eight games.
- 57:08Speaker 19: This is an absolute slugfest and will tell us a
- 57:11Speaker 19: ton about, especially from the Randall perspective, who is a
- 57:14Speaker 19: team that I think people, a very highly ranked team
- 57:16Speaker 19: that we think can make it to AT & T Stadium.
- 57:19Speaker 19: This is the type of game they're going to have
- 57:20Speaker 19: to win throughout the course of their playoff run.
- 57:23Speaker 3: And this is kind of a level up from the, with.
- 57:26Speaker 19: All due respect, the Iowa Colonies who's having a tough year,
- 57:31Speaker 19: teams like that. This is a level up in competition
- 57:33Speaker 19: and we will find out a ton more about what
- 57:35Speaker 19: Randall looks like. And for Angleton, an opportunity to get
- 57:38Speaker 19: a real feather in their cap heading into the playoffs.
- 57:40Speaker 2: And I left out these all deserving of honorable mention.
- 57:44Speaker 2: 8-0 Pearland against 7-1 Shadow Creek.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Amazing. Lake Travis and Round Rock. Here's your weird number
- 57:52Speaker 1: about that.
- 57:52Speaker 2: Depending on what happens with Westlake and Cedar Ridge, there's
- 57:55Speaker 2: the very real possibility. If Round Rock wins that game,
- 57:58Speaker 2: you could be talking about Lake Travis being the four
- 58:00Speaker 2: seed coming out of that district there. There's that possibility.
- 58:07Speaker 2: How about Anna at Salina? There's an 8-0 and 7-1.
- 58:10Speaker 2: And an 8-0 Tyvee at a 5-2 Canyon Lake. I mean,
- 58:14Speaker 2: those are all really, like you said, a really good
- 58:17Speaker 2: weekend for these.
- 58:19Speaker 19: Great slate of games. And then I'll give you a
- 58:20Speaker 19: couple more. The other unbeaten match of unbeatens, which might
- 58:23Speaker 19: be flying on people's radar. Price Carlisle plays Frankston in Price, Texas,
- 58:28Speaker 19: which is a really, really fun game. One of the games,
- 58:31Speaker 19: the game that Matt Stepp is calling the biggest game
- 58:33Speaker 19: in Fort Worth ISD in at least a decade, unbeaten
- 58:36Speaker 19: Fort Worth Arlington Heights versus unbeaten Fort Worth Wyatt. Wyatt's
- 58:39Speaker 19: an unbelievable story.
- 58:41Speaker 3: Aiden over the first time in program history.
- 58:43Speaker 19: Their coach, Zachary Chris, is the son of the legendary coach,
- 58:46Speaker 19: Willie Chris, who coached there forever and ever.
- 58:48Speaker 1: And then the other one.
- 58:50Speaker 19: White Deer hosting Boys Ranch in six-man football. Boys Ranch,
- 58:54Speaker 19: one of the great stories in Texas high school football,
- 58:57Speaker 19: undefeated under Lewis Kelly, who had never coached six-man football
- 59:00Speaker 19: before and now has them 8-0 with an opportunity to
- 59:03Speaker 19: go win a district championship on the road in White Deer, America.
- 59:06Speaker 3: So if you're anywhere near White Deer, make it to
- 59:09Speaker 3: Buff Stadium. on Friday night.
- 59:10Speaker 2: Catch you a quick Southwest flight up to Amarillo. Get
- 59:13Speaker 2: your rental car and zip up there. No problem at
- 59:15Speaker 2: all with that.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:17Speaker 2: He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 59:20Speaker 2: Have fun with the call on Friday night. We'll visit
- 59:23Speaker 2: again soon.
- 59:24Speaker 4: Sure will.
- 59:24Speaker 3: Sure will. Talk to you guys later.
- 59:25Speaker 7: You bet. All right.
- 59:27Speaker 2: That's Tuesdays with Tepper. We have more coming up. How
- 59:31Speaker 2: about Tuesdays with Dak? We'll hear from Dak Prescott coming
- 59:34Speaker 2: up on 13 Under the Zone. Is that a Waylon
- 59:41Speaker 2: and Willie.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Collaboration there?
- 59:44Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got all the highwaymen.
- 59:46Speaker 1: On this one. Now that's Waylon there.
- 59:52Speaker 6: Yeah, Waylon, Johnny Cash, Chris Christopherson on this as well.
- 59:55Speaker 6: The last cowboy song.
- 59:56Speaker 1: Yeah, well, there you go.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Well, the Cowboys hope they're off and running now after
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: getting the win over the Eagles last night.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: He was asked about what was the importance of having
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: that balanced offense because they ran the ball well, they
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: threw the ball well to get the win.
- 1:00:13Speaker 20: You said the only thing that matters is getting a win.
- 1:00:15Speaker 20: Huge to do that.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Obviously.
- 1:00:19Speaker 20: And what we've done in the last couple of weeks
- 1:00:21Speaker 20: to put that behind us and come out and get
- 1:00:23Speaker 20: a division win on the road in a hostile environment
- 1:00:27Speaker 20: right before we get to go home for a couple
- 1:00:28Speaker 20: of weeks, I think it was massive and just a
- 1:00:31Speaker 20: great complimentary win right back and forth in the first half.
- 1:00:35Speaker 20: Defense settles in in the second half, one touchdown, and
- 1:00:38Speaker 20: we're able to pretty much score on most of the drives,
- 1:00:39Speaker 20: I think, right there, two of the three in the
- 1:00:42Speaker 20: fourth quarter.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: And so very balanced attack.
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: We've got to stick to it.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Okay, which brings to mind the stabilizing performance of the
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: offensive line.
- 1:00:52Speaker 7: Linemen lead the way.
- 1:00:54Speaker 20: Q did a great message to the team before the game,
- 1:00:57Speaker 20: just talking about the O-line and the D-line, going and
- 1:00:59Speaker 20: controlling the game. On offense, that's exactly what it was.
- 1:01:02Speaker 20: We knew we had to create some balance. We had
- 1:01:05Speaker 20: to stick to the run, even if some were negative
- 1:01:08Speaker 20: or not as efficient as we want. We were able
- 1:01:10Speaker 20: to do that, and you saw they got better as
- 1:01:12Speaker 20: the game went on. Those two-yard runs turned to six
- 1:01:15Speaker 20: yard runs from six to 12. And, uh, from there,
- 1:01:17Speaker 20: you know, we're able to stay balanced and then pass
- 1:01:20Speaker 20: off of that. And so, um, that that's kind of
- 1:01:22Speaker 20: the attack we have to continue.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: So why did Dak think this was the most complete
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: offensive performance this season?
- 1:01:27Speaker 20: I mean, the numbers would say so, uh, you go
- 1:01:29Speaker 20: 200 and 200. Um, obviously that shows balance.
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: Uh, George scores a touchdown. CD scores a couple.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Um, Javante was dominant.
- 1:01:37Speaker 20: Uh, Goodson came, came in and had a great, uh,
- 1:01:40Speaker 20: great day in his reps and sparing Javante. Um, yeah,
- 1:01:42Speaker 20: I would say the numbers would say so, but This
- 1:01:45Speaker 20: is one game. We've got to build on this. We've
- 1:01:48Speaker 20: got to show that we can continue to do this.
- 1:01:50Speaker 20: So we're not going to be, you know, complacent and
- 1:01:53Speaker 20: say this is it. We've got to go get better
- 1:01:55Speaker 20: this week and do it again next week.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: So was this indeed a must win and how come?
- 1:01:59Speaker 20: I mean, I don't know if it's much more than
- 1:02:01Speaker 20: we've lost two games. We say the division's right in
- 1:02:03Speaker 20: front of us. It is as long as we win. And,
- 1:02:05Speaker 20: you know, if you lose another game, then you're probably
- 1:02:08Speaker 20: checking to see what New York's doing. You're probably watching,
- 1:02:10Speaker 20: you know, the other teams more than we should.
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: So.
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: Yeah, got to win division games.
- 1:02:15Speaker 20: Like I said, how big of a game this was,
- 1:02:18Speaker 20: understanding how much they're hurt on their offensive side. Yeah,
- 1:02:22Speaker 20: huge road win for us. And as I said, create
- 1:02:24Speaker 20: momentum for us to go back home for the next
- 1:02:26Speaker 20: couple of weeks.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Okay, all right.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: The media taking note of Shottie's demeanor in the post-game
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: press conference prompted a couple of questions.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: One of those, did he do anything differently this week?
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: No, no, not at all.
- 1:02:36Speaker 20: I mean, I alluded to that after last game. throughout
- 1:02:40Speaker 20: the week it's not about our process through the week
- 1:02:42Speaker 20: um we do things right we prepare the right way
- 1:02:44Speaker 20: we got great attitudes great brotherhood shows we just got
- 1:02:47Speaker 20: to come out and earn it and win it on
- 1:02:48Speaker 20: sunday nobody's gonna give it to us nobody's gonna uh
- 1:02:51Speaker 20: say yeah you're the better team you've got it that's
- 1:02:53Speaker 20: what's so great about the nfl and so we've got
- 1:02:55Speaker 20: to come out and earn it each and every week
- 1:02:56Speaker 20: and there's gonna be no difference come next next sunday.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: All right and then finally uh and this involved an
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: exchange with our friend chill clarence hill uh there covers
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: the cowboy show closely um he was asking why he.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: Still looks so focused after the game, walking to the
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: locker room.
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: I mean, it wasn't still in the game.
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: The game was over with.
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: I just expect that.
- 1:03:18Speaker 20: Obviously, I've been in the league 11 years now, and
- 1:03:22Speaker 20: understanding where this team is, what we need to do,
- 1:03:25Speaker 20: the importance, and, yeah, when you expect to do something, yeah,
- 1:03:30Speaker 20: you should celebrate it.
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: Don't get me wrong.
- 1:03:32Speaker 20: The work that we put in, and it's not like
- 1:03:34Speaker 20: I didn't celebrate with my guys in the locker room.
- 1:03:36Speaker 7: I'm not happy about it.
- 1:03:37Speaker 20: Like, that's... Yeah, but yeah, I don't know if you
- 1:03:41Speaker 20: wanted me to be happy or the same one who
- 1:03:42Speaker 20: said we're the happiest two and three team when we
- 1:03:45Speaker 20: were that. So I don't, you know, I don't really
- 1:03:47Speaker 20: know what you want from us.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: Okay. I think Clarence would say, no, I just, you
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: still look focused, you know, on all that. Cowboys are
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: a little chippy. A little chippy.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: They've been reading.
- 1:04:00Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Reading what's been written in the past.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: And hearing some things and stuff like that. A little chippy.
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up our number two on
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: Third and final hour of the program here on a
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Texan Tuesday. Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone. Craig
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Wade joined by the producer, Jake Herman. Glad to have
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: you with us. Good to hear from some more Longhorns
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: and Cowboys coming up as we have throughout the program
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: this afternoon as we turn the page toward... critical weekends
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: coming in college football, high school football, and yes, even
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: There's plenty to get to on that.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: We're going to have more on the Cowboys coming up
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: in a few minutes, but let's jump right back into
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: the Longhorns.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: And here's some more.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Michael Masunis, the Longhorns tight end, caught his first three
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: passes as a Longhorn. So how good did it feel
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: to be involved as a receiver?
- 1:04:55Speaker 11: It felt good.
- 1:04:56Speaker 8: You know, getting my first catches here at Texas, you know,
- 1:04:58Speaker 8: I've been dreaming of that a long time and finally
- 1:05:00Speaker 8: for it to come to fruition and It felt nice
- 1:05:02Speaker 8: to be out there catching the ball.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: Remember, he's a transfer from Michigan State, and he's in
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: a group with talented tight ends. Nick Townsend, who's been
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: in the program a couple of years. Amari Winston, same
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: story as well. A couple of sophomores. Spencer Shannon is
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: a senior now on the program. So given the situation
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: of what he is looking at there, how does he
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: view his role as a receiver amidst this very talented
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: tight end room?
- 1:05:27Speaker 8: It's definitely there, but I always like to emphasize blocking first.
- 1:05:31Speaker 8: You block well, the defense is going to soften up
- 1:05:34Speaker 8: a little bit, and then you're going to be able
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: to get some passing opportunities underneath.
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: He got some of those opportunities the other night, and
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: he's largely been in as a blocker before. So how
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: does he view his role right now in the fact
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: that Sark showed some confidence in him for the matchup
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: against Ole Miss?
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: I think we just got into a groove on offense.
- 1:05:54Speaker 8: Once we get into a groove, Sark likes to keep
- 1:05:56Speaker 8: things rolling and it was working, so we just kept going.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: With regard to the offensive line, obviously with the expectation
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: that we'll get the news that it's going to be
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: a difficult situation for them on the left side of
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: the offensive line and not being able to have one
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: of the keys to to their offensive line.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: And not only that, not only not having.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: Goosby on the offensive front, not having Trevor on the
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: offensive front, but how all of it is affected by
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: the anchor, if you will. I mean, Connor Robertson is
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: the center and he makes the calls of that on
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: the offensive front. But still in all, we are talking
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: about not having one of your key guys there.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: So Andre Kojo.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: has been the guy that they've called upon to step
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: up and be able to play.
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: And he did.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: He kind of got thrown into the fire. And, yeah,
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: there was the obvious play that stands out where he
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: gets blown past and it causes the strip sack fumble
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: in the touchdown for Ole Miss in the third quarter. Nevertheless,
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Connor Robertson, who makes the calls on that offensive front,
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: the fifth-year senior in the center, said there's enough to
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: be pleased and impressed with by watching Andre Kojo in practice.
- 1:07:18Speaker 16: Andre is a guy who's been in the program for
- 1:07:20Speaker 16: a long time. Excited for him to get his opportunity
- 1:07:24Speaker 16: here and run with it. I think he's a good player.
- 1:07:28Speaker 16: Definitely knows what's going on. And like I said, been
- 1:07:31Speaker 16: in the program for long enough now. So I'm fired
- 1:07:34Speaker 16: up for him and think he's got a good mentality.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Robertson was asked if Kojo is one of those vocal
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: kind of guys. And how is this offensive line room
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: adjusting today? without Trevor Goosby's voice in there since he's
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: out and having Kojo having to take the role I.
- 1:07:50Speaker 16: Think Andre's vocal um you know he's not afraid to
- 1:07:53Speaker 16: not afraid to talk or anything but um I mean
- 1:07:56Speaker 16: look it's you know I feel really bad for Trevor
- 1:08:00Speaker 16: um obviously really unfortunate but um you know I talked
- 1:08:03Speaker 16: to him yesterday and it's just you know part of
- 1:08:05Speaker 16: the game um but good thing for us is Andre's
- 1:08:09Speaker 16: you know a guy that we all trust and and
- 1:08:11Speaker 16: knows he's going.
- 1:08:11Speaker 7: To step up so you know, I feel good about him.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: So with the help of his teammates, how does Kojo
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: not become overwhelmed by all of this?
- 1:08:20Speaker 16: I'm not him, but I've been in that situation before
- 1:08:24Speaker 16: and a couple years ago and it's tough, you know,
- 1:08:28Speaker 16: but like you just got to lean back on your
- 1:08:31Speaker 16: preparation and Andre prepares really well.
- 1:08:34Speaker 7: Like Hiro said, practice.
- 1:08:35Speaker 16: Is really hard and, you know, has seen has seen
- 1:08:39Speaker 16: a lot of stuff thrown at him over the years.
- 1:08:41Speaker 16: So it's not like it was his first time playing football.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: You heard Robertson make reference to Hirokanu and what he
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: had to say. We're talking about a defensive lineman, talking
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: about an offensive lineman, but he certainly has his impressions
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: of Kojo.
- 1:08:52Speaker 11: I'm glad Kojo got this opportunity.
- 1:08:54Speaker 17: Unfortunately, it wasn't the cost of somebody else going down,
- 1:08:57Speaker 17: but I knew he was ready. He's been practicing his
- 1:09:00Speaker 17: butt off all, honestly, spring, summer, winter. I know, like,
- 1:09:07Speaker 17: he's a tremendous athlete. A lot of people don't see
- 1:09:09Speaker 17: it maybe like that. But he's fast. Like, he's really athletic.
- 1:09:13Speaker 17: Long arms and he can play fast.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Okay, and on to Mississippi State now and getting ready
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: for that. And what does Connie remember about that Bulldog
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: offense from a season ago?
- 1:09:23Speaker 17: Yeah, they were going fast, not only like from the
- 1:09:25Speaker 17: speed from play to play, but also like the speed
- 1:09:28Speaker 17: that they had on the perimeter and the receivers and everything.
- 1:09:30Speaker 17: I know a lot of spread formations, you know, dags
- 1:09:34Speaker 17: or just open formations, vertical routes because they had guys
- 1:09:39Speaker 17: that run like a 10-2.
- 1:09:41Speaker 11: That's fast. I mean, it's true, you know.
- 1:09:45Speaker 10: I don't run.
- 1:09:47Speaker 17: It that fast, but that's what I've seen from last year.
- 1:09:51Speaker 17: We're going to see similar things this year. A little
- 1:09:53Speaker 17: bit of different personnel, but really talented guys.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: So that's from one member of the defensive side.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: Justin Cryer, of course, the Longhorns linebacker, another member, and
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: he talked about that green dot that has drawn so
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: much conversation, the conversations that that go on and what
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: he's hearing from defensive coordinator Will Muschamp as he prepares
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: to relay the defensive instructions to his teammates.
- 1:10:19Speaker 18: I got to talk to him before the season started.
- 1:10:21Speaker 18: He kind of asked what made me most comfortable. Would
- 1:10:25Speaker 18: I want him to be more talking? I like him
- 1:10:30Speaker 18: more whatever. He gives me the call and lets me
- 1:10:33Speaker 18: work with it. It's kind of hard to talk and
- 1:10:36Speaker 18: listen at the same time. So I can't do my
- 1:10:38Speaker 18: job if he's in my area yelling at me. I
- 1:10:41Speaker 18: don't know how he gets. We have a good relationship
- 1:10:46Speaker 18: and understanding about before the play starts. If he has
- 1:10:50Speaker 18: something to say, he'll let it come out before we
- 1:10:52Speaker 18: get set. And he'll let me rock out from that point.
- 1:10:54Speaker 18: So again, that's just trusting the system and him trusting
- 1:10:58Speaker 18: me to be able to go out there and just
- 1:10:59Speaker 18: be an extension of him.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: The other big thing that happened in the press conferences yesterday,
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: And it all really stemmed from things that Sark talked
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: about in his thing about having gotten a chance to
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: get to know Kobe and being impressed by him and
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: the Mamba mentality. And I mentioned this yesterday. You know,
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: my good friend and former co-host, Rod Babers, used to
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: call it the competitive sickness mentality. He said Kobe had it.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: He said Michael Jordan had it. There's some people that
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: have that competitive sickness.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: But anyway, that sort of thing.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Where you don't allow that mentality to creep in, that
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: relief syndrome that Sark talked about, that you just try
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: to stay focused on the task at hand. So Cryer
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: was asked how much he knew about Kobe and this
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Mamba mentality that Kobe Bryant had when he was alive
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: and on the earth and playing.
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: My brother's a Kobe guy.
- 1:11:56Speaker 11: Uh, my, um, you know, we, we know what it means.
- 1:11:59Speaker 18: And, um, that, that ability to, to not let your
- 1:12:03Speaker 18: past performances and really more of your past success, um,
- 1:12:06Speaker 18: kind of dictate how you move and how you think
- 1:12:09Speaker 18: going forward.
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:12:10Speaker 18: Like everyone knows like the clip he had, I think
- 1:12:11Speaker 18: it was like an old non-finals where he, they're up
- 1:12:13Speaker 18: too low and he had a look on his face.
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: He's like, job's not finished.
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:12:17Speaker 18: Um, that, that mindset to, to have success while still
- 1:12:20Speaker 18: understanding that we still have more room to grow. Um,
- 1:12:23Speaker 18: It's important, because everyone knows what relief syndrome is, right?
- 1:12:25Speaker 18: Everyone knows what that means. You want to come in here,
- 1:12:28Speaker 18: and you want to take a deep breath, and be like,
- 1:12:29Speaker 18: all right, Finally, we snapped the skid that we had,
- 1:12:33Speaker 18: but that mindset will get you beat. You can't overlook
- 1:12:37Speaker 18: this team just because of what they might not have
- 1:12:40Speaker 18: or recent performances.
- 1:12:41Speaker 11: They were undefeated early in the year for a reason.
- 1:12:44Speaker 7: This is a good team.
- 1:12:45Speaker 18: Going into this week, I feel like as much as
- 1:12:50Speaker 18: we can replicate that last week of practice that we had,
- 1:12:51Speaker 18: because I feel like last week we were flying around
- 1:12:53Speaker 18: having fun. We didn't let the last two weeks dictate
- 1:12:55Speaker 18: how we went out there and performed. So again, like
- 1:12:58Speaker 18: having another good week of practice, preparing and getting ready
- 1:13:00Speaker 18: for this week.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: So there's some Longhorn information there.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: And of course, Texas gets ready to take on the
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: Mississippi State team. It was announced this morning that Kamario
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: Taylor will not be in action. And, you know, it's
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: a very difficult break for Mississippi State not to have
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: him in there. Jeff Levy said, you know, he's the
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: ultimate teammate competitor. You see it in the work he's
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: put in and the way the players and coaches work.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: believe in him the way they do. So he had
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: really pushed hard to play even with that turf toe
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: and the bad toe injury to get into the game.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: And then he appeared to aggravate the toe in the
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: first quarter of the game against Oklahoma.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: He had to go to the injury tent. He didn't return.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: He had a statement today where he said, quote, over
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: the last few weeks, I've worked every day with our
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: medical staff and done everything possible to be out there
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: with my teammates. Missing the rest of this season is
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: hard to accept, but I know God has a plan.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: My role will look different these next few weeks, but
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: my commitment to this team won't change. I'll do whatever
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: I can to help my brothers down the stretch. I'm
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: a guy who's a true sophomore, and he did give
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: the Longhorns a lot of trouble last year when they
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: played in the overtime game in Starkville. So a difficult
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: thing for Mississippi State. We'll see how the Bulldogs respond
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: and what they roll out against Texas on Saturday night.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: All right, up next, we'll take a look at the
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Cowboys more, the Cowboys win. Here's some more from Jerry Jones,
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: who's always just.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: Quite entertaining. And it had to be, wouldn't.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: You want to be a fly on the wall or
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: sitting there in the suite with with him and Stephen A.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: Smith last night. How much fun must that have been?
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: To find fun.
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: You got Michael Irvin there in the mix, too.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and him doing that, too.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: So anyway, we'll hear some more from the Cowboys coming
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: up when we continue here on this Texan Tuesday on
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: I hope you caught it.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: Well, in the case of the Cowboys, it was a
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: plane ride back to Dallas.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: But we hear.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: From the King, George Strait and the Four O'Clockers. Is
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: that why you selected this particular George Strait track?
- 1:15:13Speaker 6: Yeah, playing back to Dallas and the way the Cowboys
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: ran it last night.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they did.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: And we did this in the two o'clock hour. I
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: want to go through it again, let you hear this again, because,
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: you know, I thought of it in the same way
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: a lot of folks referred to Arch Manning's demeanor last
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: week as edgy Arch.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: It was kind of edgy, shoddy in a pretty brief.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: Press conference he got a lot of conversations and speculation
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: even some criticism from some folks on how he handled
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: the press conference but here it is first of all
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: ask how desperate was he for a win and what's
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: his team for a win tonight.
- 1:15:50Speaker 15: Now we played really good tonight second half had nothing
- 1:15:53Speaker 15: to do with desperation our guys just played good.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: Okay so maybe that started them all so then they
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: asked him what do you think of his offense they're
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: good Solid.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: Good balance.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: There was a fan apparently taunting him after the game.
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: Did he notice that?
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: I didn't hear it. I did that to other people.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: I had headphones on.
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: How about his thoughts on the running game?
- 1:16:19Speaker 15: I'm going to start with the offensive line. They were outstanding.
- 1:16:23Speaker 15: Great run plan. But Javante, man, the power, the acceleration
- 1:16:27Speaker 15: was there tonight.
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: Looked great.
- 1:16:29Speaker 15: And then I'm going to talk about Goody as well.
- 1:16:31Speaker 15: I mean, great change of pace overall. I thought the
- 1:16:33Speaker 15: run game was really good. Receivers blocked well.
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: It was a good night.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: Did the run game success feel like what he had
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: from his team last year?
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: Felt good.
- 1:16:42Speaker 15: You know, I thought Dak played awesome. I thought we
- 1:16:44Speaker 15: were good on third down. You know, 204 yards rushing.
- 1:16:49Speaker 15: That's pretty good.
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: So I thought it was good.
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: How about his defense?
- 1:16:53Speaker 15: Again, you know, we got to be a little bit
- 1:16:54Speaker 15: better against the run. You know, third down, we tightened
- 1:16:57Speaker 15: up a little bit in the second half.
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: But all in all, you hold the team to 21 points.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: That gives us a chance.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: Okay, before we get more shoddy, again, if you didn't
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: hear the locker room conversation that Schottenheimer had with his
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: team as he was reviewing the good things, if you
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: didn't hear it in the press conference, you can hear
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: the excitement in Shoddy's voice.
- 1:17:20Speaker 10: Hey, number one, outstanding mindset. No one's surprised by the
- 1:17:25Speaker 10: way we played tonight as a football team.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: No one.
- 1:17:27Speaker 10: Okay, that's a standard. Okay, hell of a job. Second half,
- 1:17:31Speaker 10: I thought was outstanding. Okay, by our whole football team.
- 1:17:33Speaker 10: That's what it comes down to. Now, hey, here we go.
- 1:17:38Speaker 14: We got to get the fuck out of here. We
- 1:17:40Speaker 14: got to get back to Dallas. We got a game in.
- 1:17:43Speaker 14: We got a game in like six days.
- 1:17:45Speaker 10: Here we go. Brandon Aubrey had a 55-yard field goal.
- 1:17:49Speaker 10: Brandon Aubrey had a 27-yard field goal. Brandon Aubrey had
- 1:17:52Speaker 10: a 24-yard field goal. Hey, we had sacks. Easy had
- 1:17:56Speaker 10: a sack. Q had a sack. And maybe the best
- 1:17:59Speaker 10: pregame talk ever.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: Hey, Demo had an interception.
- 1:18:06Speaker 10: All right, here we go. Here we go, here we go.
- 1:18:09Speaker 12: CD had a touchdown. Pickens had a touchdown. CD had
- 1:18:13Speaker 12: no touchdown. Javadi had a rush touchdown. Dak Prescott threw one, two,
- 1:18:19Speaker 12: three touchdowns.
- 1:18:21Speaker 10: And he had a two-point conversion.
- 1:18:24Speaker 14: But maybe the best stat of the night, maybe the
- 1:18:27Speaker 14: best stat of the night.
- 1:18:28Speaker 10: Javante Williams went for 150.
- 1:18:40Speaker 17: Okay.
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:18:46Speaker 18: Okay.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: Okay, Ola! Okay, Ola!
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: Okay, Ola!
- 1:18:46Speaker 10: Okay, Ola!
- 1:18:49Speaker 7: Okay, Ola!
- 1:18:50Speaker 10: Hey, here we go. Hey, listen up.
- 1:18:54Speaker 14: Hey, listen up.
- 1:18:57Speaker 10: Hey, at the end of the day, we talked about today.
- 1:18:59Speaker 17: They just kept poking us, man.
- 1:19:02Speaker 10: They just kept poking us. Hey, all of a sudden,
- 1:19:04Speaker 10: we just took a big bite. Please, let's do what
- 1:19:08Speaker 10: we do. He came back into a house he's been
- 1:19:10Speaker 10: in a while, and he did a great job leading
- 1:19:12Speaker 10: the defense.
- 1:19:26Speaker 13: Hey, appreciate y'all boys. Let's keep on stacking them, man.
- 1:19:28Speaker 10: We're just getting started. Hey, good game.
- 1:19:33Speaker 11: Let's just keep stacking them.
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: Gang on me.
- 1:19:35Speaker 10: Gang on 3-1-2-3.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: So coming out of that then, what.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Was it like in the locker room, he was asked,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: in the press conference?
- 1:19:43Speaker 15: Guys were excited. It's been a couple weeks coming, but
- 1:19:47Speaker 15: they were excited. But we're ready for Arizona. We play
- 1:19:49Speaker 15: here in a couple days.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: A lot of media. Dog with a bone. I'm going
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: to ask this question. Was this a must win?
- 1:19:56Speaker 15: No, I thought it was the next championship opportunity. But again,
- 1:20:00Speaker 15: I think it gets us right back into the hunt
- 1:20:02Speaker 15: in the NFC East.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: Okay, this, make note of, is going to be the
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: longest sound bite of the entire press conference afterwards. The
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: question was, how did he feel overall like the team played?
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: Outstanding.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: Any area that stood out to you maybe more than others?
- 1:20:18Speaker 15: Yeah, just the patience and poise in the pocket I
- 1:20:19Speaker 15: thought jumped off the film. You know, any time you,
- 1:20:22Speaker 15: you know, Score, throw the three touchdowns like that. The
- 1:20:24Speaker 15: two-point conversion was great. He looked like, you know, he
- 1:20:29Speaker 15: was in control out there all night.
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: At 17 seconds, that was the longest sound bite from there.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: How about having DeMarvion overshown back on the field and
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: that big interception he got?
- 1:20:39Speaker 15: It was a great play, number one. A lot like
- 1:20:42Speaker 15: Dee's last week, the catch was awesome. Put us into
- 1:20:45Speaker 15: a four-minute situation, and it was awesome seeing him back
- 1:20:47Speaker 15: out there, along with Kobe Durant and guys like that.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: And on the offensive side, clutch touchdown catch by George Pickens.
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: Solid, you know, again... Spread the ball around. We wanted
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: to run it some more tonight.
- 1:20:57Speaker 7: We did that.
- 1:20:57Speaker 15: But anytime, you know, those two guys get ops, especially one-on-one,
- 1:21:01Speaker 15: talking about CeeDee and George, they're.
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: Tough to defend.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: All right. Lots of conversation about the green dot.
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: The players, when we were talking about that, you know,
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: with Justin Cryer for the Longhorn.
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Shamar James was the guy who got to start with that.
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: Yeah, he's earned it.
- 1:21:14Speaker 15: Great control of what we're doing. Awesome job with the
- 1:21:17Speaker 15: green dot. And just proud of his command.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: So a lot of folks look at this and say
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: maybe this is the start where they can really build
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: some momentum.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: They have Arizona coming up. They have Indianapolis. They have Washington.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: They do have the 49ers in there. But then they
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: have Tennessee.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: They have a chance maybe to win four out of
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: five before Thanksgiving. So how important is it to start
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: the run this coming Sunday against Arizona?
- 1:21:41Speaker 15: Think about this one tonight. It's really important. You know,
- 1:21:44Speaker 15: want to play well again next week and beat a
- 1:21:46Speaker 15: good Arizona team.
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: And then about Quinnen Williams and his performance?
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: He's been great all week.
- 1:21:50Speaker 15: He was fired up about this op and did a
- 1:21:54Speaker 15: tremendous job just wreaking havoc inside.
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: So clearly the media noticed a different demeanor and edginess
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: to him.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: So that brought Todd Archer to ask the question.
- 1:22:03Speaker 15: You seem a little short, not as exuberant as you've
- 1:22:08Speaker 15: been in the past.
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: Are you okay? I'm great. Excited for our guys. Thanks.
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: That's it.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: Total thing, about four minutes. Jerry Jones is never short
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: for words. He was asked on 105.3 The Fan, his
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: weekly conversation on the Cowboys flagship this morning, about what
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: is his answer, even as the Cowboys won, to the
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: ongoing defensive struggles.
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: Play like we played on the offensive side of the ball.
- 1:22:40Speaker 5: That is our answer. The defense is really not where
- 1:22:46Speaker 5: we expected it to be. But we can win and
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: we can get where we want to go with that
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: offensive side.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: Of the ball.
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: And that's where we've got a real emphasis on proven
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: players that can do things that we know how to do.
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: We also have an outstanding offensive play caller in our
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: head coach. And that's our strength. If you look at
- 1:23:14Speaker 5: what went down to it, you got Dak, you got
- 1:23:17Speaker 5: the receivers.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: You see that.
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: We've got a very good running back group. And we
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: have one of the best offensive lines in my mind.
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: I'm looking at personnel, and it's strong. And the most
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: disappointed you'll see me is when that side of the
- 1:23:35Speaker 5: ball isn't clicking. Over on the other side, it is
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: a bobbing ball. Probably we all were too ambitious to
- 1:23:42Speaker 5: think that you could have the kind of better results
- 1:23:45Speaker 5: than what you're talking about. But that's what we are.
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: We can get better. We have the potential to get better.
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: We've got players over there that are talented, as good
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: an overall group talent-wise as we've had in several years.
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: So our challenge here is to maintain, don't let that
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: game get in a situation where we can't run that
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: ball anymore. And you do that if you get several
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: scores down.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: But that's our team this year.
- 1:24:16Speaker 5: And we can, in my mind, we can win it
- 1:24:18Speaker 5: with this combination and a significant but not unattainable defensive progress.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: And one more from Jerry.
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: This is from his Tuesday weekly radio installment that he
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: does in the morning on 105.3 The Fan. There's been
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: an awful lot said and written about this Joe Buck-Troy
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: Aikman feud thing. And in some ways, it's a bridge
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: too far for me in terms of this feud thing.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: In case you don't know it, here's the breakdown on it.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: Joe Buck and Troy Aikman started working together at Fox
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: in 2002, maybe.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: I think it was.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: And they were really, really good. I mean, it was
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: shortly after Aikman retired. And clearly he proved he was
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: not one of those former athletes that didn't do his homework,
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: expected to just throw on a headset and hop into
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: the booth.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: Because I've worked with some guys like that.
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: You know, doing high school games and some other games
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: and things like that. I've worked with some people like that,
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: former athletes, and that former athlete syndrome thinking, well, I
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: played the game, so I know what I'm talking about.
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: And they didn't prepare and it showed. That's never been
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: the case with Troy Aikman. He's always shown that he
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: was ready for the challenge and did really, really well
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: with Joe Buck. Now, I'm going to be different than
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: some of the rank and files. I like Joe Buck.
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: He is a consummate professional. He does prepare very, very well.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: I liked him even before I met him. And I
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: met him when he presented me with the Texas Sportscaster
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: of the Year Award a couple of years ago.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: In Greensboro.
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: But I'd heard good things about him. And I'd heard
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: him on with my friends, George Dunham and Craig Miller
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: on the ticket. And I liked the way that he
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: prepared to do a broadcast. Now, having said all of that,
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: I understand, I understand where his style and demeanor would
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: rub some viewers the wrong way. I had somebody describe
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: once that he's a really good broadcaster. He just comes
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: across as a smarmy a-hole. That was what somebody had
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: said about him. That never really bothered Joe Buck. He's
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: just gone about his business. And one thing that did
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: bother me, somebody said, I read a thing in some
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: comments about the story about them, these two guys.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: That, oh yeah, just like his dad. His dad is a.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: Hall of Famer and one of the greatest sports play-by-play
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: and overall broadcasters the industry's ever seen. Jack Buck did
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: about everything. and was incredibly good. Of course, he was
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: mainly the play-by-play voice of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team,
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: but he did the NFL on CBS. He did Major
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: League Baseball on television. He actually did hockey. He did
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: that in St. Louis a little bit. He did Monday
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Night Football on radio for decades, did Major League Baseball
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: playoffs on radio as well as on television for decades, Great,
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: great consummate professional and a really nice guy, too. So
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: I didn't understand why somebody said that. But, you know, again,
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: that's somebody's own individual taste. Like I said, and Joe,
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: Jack's on-air demeanor was a lot different than Joe's. His
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: was more settled in and that sort of thing. Whereas Joe, yeah,
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: Joe rubbed some people the wrong way. Troy Aikman rubbed
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: some people the wrong way because he could be really,
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: really blunt about what he felt about a football team
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: or how it was coached or individual players, officiating, whatever.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: And I think it was one of the things that
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: has made Troy Aikman a really good broadcaster through the years.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: It doesn't always sit well with a lot of people,
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: especially Cowboy fans, because he has not held back. I
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: don't think he's gone overboard to criticize the Cowboys. By
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: the same token, I don't think he's held back if
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: he thought that things weren't right and that something needed
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: to be said. I just think that was his way
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: of doing it. So, the two of them paired together
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: has worked well starting in 2002, so it's over 20 years,
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: started with Fox. Then they made the move to ESPN
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: for Monday Night Football. What was that, seven years ago,
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: I think it was? Eight years ago, was it 2018 maybe?
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: Something like that, when they went over?
- 1:29:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: I think it was 2018. That sounds about right.
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: There was kind of that revolving door in the Monday
- 1:29:17Speaker 6: Night Football booth before they arrived, after Mike Tirico had gone.
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe 2020, something like that. I don't remember exactly,
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: but it was right in that area. And that's not
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: that important because they've been together all this time. Here's
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: the important part. ESPN was unhappy with its analyst, primarily
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: on Monday Night Football. So they went hard after Troy Aikman.
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: And Aikman's response was to say, yeah, I'm interested. Maybe
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: you should talk to Joe Buck as well. So then
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: they kind of negotiated a deal together as a team.
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: 18 million bucks each, I think it was. So they
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: got a lot of money. And so they've been together
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: all this time. For whatever reason, and I've heard a
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: lot of speculation as to what the reasons were, ESPN
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: over the last year or two has kind of become
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: disenchanted with Troy Aikman. Things like his unwillingness to go
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: on Dancing with the Stars, okay? His unwillingness to be
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: involved in some game show stuff, kind of like what
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: we've seen Joe Buck did with the Jeopardy thing, right?
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I really enjoyed his work on Sports Jeopardy.
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: But Troy was, he's a little more no-nonsense. So he
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: wasn't as willing to do some of that stuff. So
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: apparently ESPN had kind of become disenchanted with him. So
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: they go to Joe Buck and said they want to
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: negotiate a new deal.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: Joe's contract was going to be up. He does that.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: Negotiates, I think, a six-year, $ 108 million deal. Troy Aikman
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: was not part of the negotiating thing. And that's where
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: this thing has really kind of ballooned and mushroomed in
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: that there are those who feel that Joe did the
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: selfish thing after Troy spoke out for him, not including,
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: maybe Joe was told we're not interested in Troy.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Who knows?
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: I think Troy felt blindsided by the deal. And what
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: is going to happen is this. He's going to, as
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: they say in the old days, play out his option.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: They're going to finish the season together.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: And then there's been people on Twitter, and I think
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: this is silly, trying to cherry pick their chemistry. They're
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: still professionals. And they did fine last night when I
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: wasn't watching the Manning cast. I flipped over and watched
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: some of that.
- 1:31:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I had friends texting. Are you listening? They totally
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: hate each other. And I'm like, how? Based on what?
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: So based on what people are reading. Anyway, that's kind
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: of where that's gone. And so now people are looking
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: for this, and this is going to be unfortunate. And
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: CBS has settled on J.J. Watt taking Tony Romo's place
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: as the number one analyst working with Jim Nance. And NBC,
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: of course, has Collinsworth with Mike Tirico.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: No sign that he's going to slow down.
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: So Aikman may not have a shot as a number one,
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: but Troy is also, and he's done this a few
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: times over the years, expressed the possibility of being interested
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: in being in the front office of a football team,
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: whether it's a GM or an assistant or whatever it
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: might be. So, which brings us back to Jerry Jones
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: this morning. And the question was asked of him, was
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: it RJ and Chan, I guess, that do the show, right?
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: Asked him, would he consider bringing Troy Aikman into the
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: front office, into a front office role?
- 1:32:47Speaker 5: Yes, I could and would. And so it's that simple
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: because I do think that much of him with his
- 1:33:00Speaker 5: basic command and understanding and knowledge of NFL football. And
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: so he certainly is qualified to do any of the
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: things that have been mentioned. And I think he's outstanding
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: at what he focuses on right now, and that's giving
- 1:33:21Speaker 5: the story and the narration of the football games.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: Of all teams.
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: So let me make it real clear. Troy Eggman is,
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: first of all, just getting started in his life. I
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: don't know of anyone that's played or any part of
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: football that has had any more success off the field
- 1:33:42Speaker 5: than Troy. He is a successful guy because he is
- 1:33:47Speaker 5: one of the hardest working, most focused people that I've
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: ever been around. Now, when you're around each other, a
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: part of that makeup can make it where you can
- 1:33:59Speaker 5: have your ups and downs. But I think the world
- 1:34:02Speaker 5: of him, I've seen his image and had it in
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: my eyes since I walked in the NFL.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: So he's outstanding. And the answer is.
- 1:34:14Speaker 5: The answer is not that necessarily we're going to do
- 1:34:16Speaker 5: something more direct with the team at this time. But
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: don't rule it out. It's very possible.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: So there's Jerry's answer, be it as it is.
- 1:34:28Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: So we'll see how it goes.
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: The two of them are going to finish the season together,
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: including the Super Bowl. ESPN's going to have a Super
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: Bowl for the first time. And those two will call it.
- 1:34:40Speaker 6: Will we know of Troy Aikman's potential new destination by then?
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: We don't know. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see. I'm
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: betting no. I'm betting we're not going to hear anything
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: until after the season.
- 1:34:51Speaker 6: Especially if he's waiting on some NFL front offices.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: That's what I'm referring to.
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: All right, we have more coming up here on a
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: Texan Tuesday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: and where you can always listen to us for free
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: right here on the iHeartRadio app. Here on a Texan Tuesday,
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: continuing a little more NFL coming off the Cowboys win.
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: The latest NFL power rankings have been released. NFL.com, Nick
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: Shook puts these together every week. ESPN does their own
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: as well. but I do always like to look into
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: the NFL ones as well. If I were to have
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: you guess, who's number 32?
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: Miami, Tennessee.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: Miami is a win, so, you know.
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, that's right. That's right.
- 1:35:39Speaker 6: They beat the Jets, and that'll get them out.
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: Of the cellar. I would probably venture to guess Tennessee.
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: How about the winless Los Angeles Chargers?
- 1:35:48Speaker 11: Wow.
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess.
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: I'd still rather have Justin Herber and be winless than
- 1:35:52Speaker 6: be in the Titans situation, but I get it.
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: It's a power ranking.
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: He's looked terrible, but then again, Cam Ward hasn't been
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: anything to write home about either, to your point.
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: What happened to Mike McDaniel? He was supposed to fix
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: that off.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it says the Chargers were idle in week seven,
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: which was a gift to everyone who's grown tired of
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: watching their inept brand of football. We'll see if the
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: week off produces any improvement. Number 31 is the Colts.
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: At two and five. Number 30 is the Cardinals at
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: two and five. The Jets are two and five at
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: number 29.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: The Eagles. How about the Eagles? 28th at two and five.
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: Season from hell is now almost complete.
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: Even ranked below the Titans and the Dolphins. The Titans
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: are 27. They're one in six. Said the Titans played hard.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: They battled with the Browns. They also blew a 14-0
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: lead before halftime.
- 1:36:47Speaker 3: That's why I was going to put them in the
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: last spot.
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: But at least they won a game. Miami's also won
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: a game. They're 1-5. The Dolphins won a game. Malik
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: Willis posted a passer rating north of 130. Number 25
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: is the Raiders at 3-4. Number 24, your Washington Commanders
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: in their one 4-1 record.
- 1:37:10Speaker 6: All year they have to stare at that record with
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: that tie and think about how it happened.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: No movement for Washington. They stayed at 24.
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: A team that likely welcomed last week's bye must make
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: the most of the extra preparation time.
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: So it's a key NFC East rematch.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: Awaits with Philadelphia, and the Commanders will hope to, again,
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: rely on the stylings of quarterback Jaden Daniels, who must
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: find new avenues after losing Terry McLaurin to a season-ending injury.
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: It's a must-win.
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: Number 23, the Saints at 2-5. Number 22, the Cowboys
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: at 3-4. While it's certainly not perfect, it appears the
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: Cowboys' offense is back. Dallas racked up 416 yards against
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: the Eagles' defense, which is supposed to be Philadelphia's strength
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: on Monday night. and received some welcome contributions from its
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: own defense in the second half. Capped by DeMarvian Overshoon's
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: diving interception, Javante Williams cleared 150 yards on the ground.
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: The CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens connections with Dak Prescott
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: were reestablished, and Dallas proved itself as the better team
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: in the NFC East rivalry. Does this mean that the
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: Cowboys are totally back on track? No, but it's encouraging progress.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: Number 21 is the Rams, three and four. Some might
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: say this is too low for the Rams. I don't,
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: but I'd like to remind everyone of where they stood
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: after week six loss to the Cardinals. The coach openly
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: admitted they lacked an identity as they were coming off
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: an indefensible defeat.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: That included a barrage of new injuries.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: Contrasting that image with what the Rams produced Sunday proves
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: how much of a week-to-week league the NFL truly is.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: They talked about how they took apart the Ravens.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: I mean, the Raiders.
- 1:38:50Speaker 6: Curious how much they'll move up, though, in these next
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: few weeks, the Rams, because they can get right against
- 1:38:54Speaker 6: some of these teams.
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: They have some winnable games coming up. Number 20, the
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: Carolina Panthers, 3-3. All the good vibes that follow the
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: Panthers from their road win over the Eagles evaporated by
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: halftime against the Buccaneers.
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: That was terrible.
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that was bad.
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: Speaking of the Bucs, they're number 19 at 2-5. Don't
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: look now, but the Buccaneers are starting to become a
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: competent football team. so it goes on to list some
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: things there. Texans at 2-5, number 18. Another tough loss
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: has landed on the Texans' ledger, reducing the room for
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: error going forward. It's fair to say this defense is
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: no longer deserving of its respected reputation, especially when reflecting
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: on how Devin Singletary ran right through the heart of
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: the unit to a game-winning touchdown. That was against the Giants,
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: who are number 17. Ravens are 16. Packers, 15. Steelers
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: at five and two are 14. The Falcons at three
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: and four are 13.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: He says, look, I'm with you. I don't know who
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: the Falcons are either, but they talk about how inspired
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: they played.
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: The Browns at five and two, number 12. Number 11,
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: the Lions at four and two. Into the top 10
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: with the Patriots at number 10. The Bears at number nine.
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: The Broncos eight. The Chiefs at seven. the Jaguars at six,
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: the Bengals at five, Seahawks at four, 49ers at three,
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills number two, and the number one team, the
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: undefeated Minnesota Vikings, who neither Jake nor I picked to
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: even be in the playoffs.
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: And they're unbeaten.
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: All right, we'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: of the program here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: the Zone.
