- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Hello and good morning, faithful listeners. I hope
- 0:06Speaker 1: you have your delicious cup of coffee with you, because
- 0:09Speaker 1: we're going to be diving into a really intense topic
- 0:13Speaker 1: today in the Book of Hebrews. Stay tuned for a
- 0:16Speaker 1: great episode. All right, faith listeners, I hope you all
- 0:25Speaker 1: have been having a really good start to your week
- 0:27Speaker 1: so far. It's been a fantastic week for me. It's
- 0:30Speaker 1: been beautiful weather, very sunshiny, but kind of cold. Not
- 0:34Speaker 1: complaining about it. I will take the sunshine and the
- 0:36Speaker 1: cold every single day over like rain and snow. But
- 0:40Speaker 1: tell me what you've been doing recently. I love hearing
- 0:43Speaker 1: from all of you guys. And answer this question for me.
- 0:46Speaker 1: What is your favorite genre of book? All right, while
- 0:49Speaker 1: you're thinking about that and also grabbing your delicious hot
- 0:52Speaker 1: beverage and Bible out of the version that you prefer,
- 0:56Speaker 1: here's a quick ad break and then we'll move into
- 0:58Speaker 1: Hebrews chapter ten today. Okay, hopefully you're ready to study
- 1:04Speaker 1: the Bible with me. Let's go ahead and turn to
- 1:06Speaker 1: Hebrews chapter ten. If you're able to read the Bible
- 1:09Speaker 1: with me today, we're gonna be talking about a few
- 1:11Speaker 1: topics today mainly legalism and how it's so unnecessary and
- 1:16Speaker 1: very terrible, and how unfortunately a lot of Christians get
- 1:18Speaker 1: kind of swept into legalism. We're also going to be
- 1:21Speaker 1: talking about how animal sacrifices we're both necessary but very
- 1:26Speaker 1: much unnecessary, and I'll explain what I mean by that
- 1:30Speaker 1: in a little bit, and also talking about another verse
- 1:33Speaker 1: in Hebrews that says you can't lose salvation. Once you
- 1:36Speaker 1: have salvation, it's over and done. You have it, you
- 1:40Speaker 1: cannot lose it. We're going to talk about all of
- 1:42Speaker 1: that today Hebrews ten one through eighteen. For the law
- 1:48Speaker 1: having a shadow of the good to come, not the
- 1:50Speaker 1: very image of the things, can never with the same
- 1:52Speaker 1: sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually make perfect
- 1:56Speaker 1: to those who draw near or else. Wouldn't they have
- 1:59Speaker 1: ceased to be offered because the worshippers, having been once cleansed,
- 2:03Speaker 1: would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in
- 2:06Speaker 1: those sacrifices there is a yearly reminder of the sins.
- 2:09Speaker 1: For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and
- 2:12Speaker 1: goats should take away sins. Therefore, when he comes into
- 2:15Speaker 1: the world, he says, you didn't desire sacrifice an offering,
- 2:19Speaker 1: but you prepared a body for me. You had no
- 2:22Speaker 1: pleasure in the burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin. Then
- 2:25Speaker 1: I said, behold, I have come in the scroll of
- 2:28Speaker 1: the book that is written of me, to do your will,
- 2:30Speaker 1: Oh God. Previously saying sacrifices and offerings, and whole burnt
- 2:35Speaker 1: offerings and sacrifices for sin, you didn't desire, neither had
- 2:38Speaker 1: pleasure in them, those which are offered according to the law.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Then he has said, behold, I have come to do
- 2:43Speaker 1: your will. He takes away the first that he may
- 2:46Speaker 1: establish the second, by which will have been sanctified through
- 2:49Speaker 1: the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Every priest indeed stands day by day serving an offering,
- 2:56Speaker 1: often the same sacrifices, which can never take away the sins.
- 3:00Speaker 1: But He, when he offered one sacrifice for sins forever
- 3:04Speaker 1: sat down on the right hand of God from that time,
- 3:07Speaker 1: waiting until his enemies are made the footstool of his feet,
- 3:11Speaker 1: For by one offering he is perfected forever those who
- 3:14Speaker 1: are being sanctified. The Holy Spirit also testifies to us,
- 3:18Speaker 1: for after saying this is the covenant that I will
- 3:20Speaker 1: make with them. After those days, says the Lord, I
- 3:23Speaker 1: will put my laws on their heart. I also will
- 3:26Speaker 1: write them on their mind. Then, he says, I will
- 3:29Speaker 1: remember their sins and their iniquities no more. Now where
- 3:33Speaker 1: remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
- 3:38Speaker 1: For the past couple weeks now in Hebrews, we've been
- 3:41Speaker 1: talking about how the Old Testament laws could not save
- 3:45Speaker 1: and it was only a temporary forgiveness, which we're going
- 3:48Speaker 1: to talk about right now. It says in verse one,
- 3:51Speaker 1: for the law having a shadow of the good to come,
- 3:55Speaker 1: not the very image of the things, can never with
- 3:58Speaker 1: the same sacrifices year by year make perfect those who
- 4:02Speaker 1: draw near. Okay, So the law is a shadow of
- 4:06Speaker 1: good things to come, meaning it is an imitation of
- 4:10Speaker 1: all of the heavenly things, right, the good things to come,
- 4:12Speaker 1: the salvation that Jesus was going to give to all
- 4:15Speaker 1: of us. The author says it was not the very
- 4:18Speaker 1: image of this. And the reason the author is talking
- 4:21Speaker 1: about this don't forget you know, he is writing this
- 4:23Speaker 1: letter to the Hebrews, the Jewish Christians who probably still
- 4:29Speaker 1: try to follow the Old Testament laws, who still think
- 4:32Speaker 1: that the Old Testament laws can save them. And there's
- 4:35Speaker 1: actually a lot of Christians that do this to this day.
- 4:38Speaker 1: They believe that in order to be a true Christian,
- 4:42Speaker 1: you must believe in Jesus and you must follow the
- 4:45Speaker 1: Old Testament laws as well. And I'm sorry because I
- 4:48Speaker 1: forget the name of that sect of Christianity. But unfortunately
- 4:52Speaker 1: it just falls into legalism all over again, because the
- 4:56Speaker 1: Old Testament laws cannot save us. There are good things
- 5:00Speaker 1: in the Old Testament laws. There are even things in
- 5:02Speaker 1: the Old Testament laws I would recommend people do because
- 5:06Speaker 1: it's probably good for you. For example, don't eat something
- 5:09Speaker 1: that has been dead for three days lying on the
- 5:11Speaker 1: side of the road. That's not good. There's a lot
- 5:13Speaker 1: of good things in the Old Testament laws. But these
- 5:16Speaker 1: things cannot save you. They cannot get you closer to God.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Just like any other religious thing that we do, whether
- 5:23Speaker 1: it's wearing a certain outfit or bowing in a certain direction,
- 5:27Speaker 1: or going to church five times a week, or giving
- 5:30Speaker 1: tithes and offerings, none of these things actually give you
- 5:34Speaker 1: any extra brownie points with God. Now, it might be
- 5:37Speaker 1: a personal conviction you have to do some of these things,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and that's good if you have a personal conviction. But
- 5:42Speaker 1: still these things do not give you any extra brownie
- 5:45Speaker 1: points with God. God is not like keeping a tally.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Oh you know, Jen, she wore a skirt above her
- 5:51Speaker 1: knees on Tuesday, so that's negative two points. Oh, but
- 5:55Speaker 1: she picked up litter off the ground on Wednesday night,
- 5:58Speaker 1: so that's a plus two points. So it evened out.
- 6:01Speaker 1: That is not what God is doing up in heaven.
- 6:04Speaker 1: God is looking at us, and he sees our hearts.
- 6:08Speaker 1: He sees the corruption on the inside, and that is
- 6:10Speaker 1: what he looks at. It actually says in scripture, I
- 6:13Speaker 1: forget where this verse is, but to God, all of
- 6:16Speaker 1: our good works are like filthy rags. And when the
- 6:21Speaker 1: author said filthy rags, he was talking about menstrual rags.
- 6:27Speaker 1: You can look that up. So that is how disgusting
- 6:30Speaker 1: our good deeds are to God, especially if we're doing
- 6:34Speaker 1: them with the wrong heart, or if we're doing it
- 6:36Speaker 1: just to gain points with God. It just does not
- 6:38Speaker 1: work that way. It is not the good place you
- 6:41Speaker 1: know that show, that TV show. It is not the
- 6:43Speaker 1: good place. It is heaven where God resides. So the
- 6:47Speaker 1: Old Testament laws cannot save us. And if you think
- 6:51Speaker 1: that you must follow the Old Testament laws to truly
- 6:55Speaker 1: be a Christian. Then unfortunately you haven't quite understood the
- 6:59Speaker 1: g of grace that Jesus gives us, because you know,
- 7:03Speaker 1: the bad news is is that we are fully corrupt
- 7:06Speaker 1: and that God can see our depravity, I suppose in
- 7:09Speaker 1: our hearts. But the good news is, in spite of
- 7:12Speaker 1: our depravity, God still loves us all the same and
- 7:15Speaker 1: he wants to save us from that depravity. So let's
- 7:18Speaker 1: continue in Hebrews ten, verse two, and this is my paraphrase.
- 7:23Speaker 1: These sacrifices year by year, which are offered continually, cannot
- 7:28Speaker 1: make perfect the people who are offering the sacrifices, or
- 7:31Speaker 1: else wouldn't they have ceased to be offered because the worshippers,
- 7:36Speaker 1: having been once cleansed, would have had no more consciousness
- 7:39Speaker 1: of sins. So the author is making the point that
- 7:43Speaker 1: one of the reasons the Old Testament sacrifices didn't work
- 7:47Speaker 1: was because they kept having to be offered over and
- 7:50Speaker 1: over and over again. You don't really have salvation if
- 7:54Speaker 1: you have to do things in order to keep gaining salvation.
- 7:58Speaker 1: You are either saved or you are not saved. And
- 8:01Speaker 1: these Old Testament sacrifices weren't really working on a core
- 8:06Speaker 1: level because they kept having to be sacrificed over and
- 8:09Speaker 1: over and over again. I mean, you can look at
- 8:10Speaker 1: the Old Testament laws. These people had to bring in
- 8:13Speaker 1: these animals for pretty much every sin that they realized
- 8:17Speaker 1: that they did. The priests had to offer these sacrifices
- 8:22Speaker 1: for themselves day after day. These sacrifices weren't really working.
- 8:28Speaker 1: In verse three, in those sacrifices, there is a yearly
- 8:32Speaker 1: reminder of sins, for it is impossible that the blood
- 8:36Speaker 1: of bulls and goats should take away sins. And in
- 8:41Speaker 1: reading that, you might be like, Jen, you just went
- 8:43Speaker 1: off on a whole thing last week about how animal
- 8:47Speaker 1: sacrifice was necessary. So how is that possible that animal
- 8:51Speaker 1: sacrifice was necessary if it is impossible that the blood
- 8:55Speaker 1: of bulls and goats can take away sins? And I'm
- 8:59Speaker 1: not gonna lie. When I first read this, I was like,
- 9:01Speaker 1: uh oh, did I teach something wrong? You know? I
- 9:04Speaker 1: was teaching that the animals gave temporary forgiveness? Was that wrong? Like?
- 9:10Speaker 1: What is the point of animal sacrifices? So I dug
- 9:12Speaker 1: a little bit deeper, and one of the things I've
- 9:14Speaker 1: always mentioned to you guys, is if you don't understand
- 9:18Speaker 1: a verse, it's really good to go back to the
- 9:21Speaker 1: Hebrew and the Greek because that is the original language
- 9:25Speaker 1: that the Bible was written in. So let's do that
- 9:28Speaker 1: by looking at the word atonement in the Old Testament.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Hopefully you guys remember me talking about the day of Atonement.
- 9:35Speaker 1: That was the big holiday every single year that the
- 9:38Speaker 1: Jewish people still do to this day. It's often called
- 9:41Speaker 1: kippor okay. That is the day where the Jewish people
- 9:44Speaker 1: fast and they take a day off and it's very somber.
- 9:47Speaker 1: They go to the temple. Back in the Old Testament days,
- 9:51Speaker 1: there was an animal sacrifice done. There was like this
- 9:54Speaker 1: scapegoat thing that would take place, but I'm not going
- 9:56Speaker 1: to talk about that today. There was a lot of
- 9:58Speaker 1: ritual that went into the because it was the one
- 10:01Speaker 1: day a year where there would be atonement made for
- 10:05Speaker 1: the sins of the people. So what does that word
- 10:08Speaker 1: atonement mean? You know, for those of you who are
- 10:11Speaker 1: like me that grew up in a Christian household, sometimes
- 10:13Speaker 1: you know, you hear these words like atonement since you
- 10:17Speaker 1: were a little kid, and yet you don't really know
- 10:19Speaker 1: what the word means. That was me today. I actually
- 10:22Speaker 1: thought the word atonement meant forgiveness, but it actually means
- 10:26Speaker 1: something a little bit different than that. If you look
- 10:29Speaker 1: at the Hebrew, the word atonement going to Exodus, I'm sorry,
- 10:36Speaker 1: what is this chapter Exitus twenty nine Versus thirty five
- 10:41Speaker 1: and thirty six do for Aaron and his sons everything
- 10:44Speaker 1: I've commanded you? Taking seven days to ordain them, sacrifice
- 10:48Speaker 1: a bull each day as a sin, offering to make
- 10:51Speaker 1: atonement or kipporum, purify the altar by making atonement or
- 10:57Speaker 1: kapoor for it and annoying it to consecrate it. So
- 11:01Speaker 1: what does that word kapoor mean or atonement? In its
- 11:05Speaker 1: basic form, kipoor means a covering, which most people translate
- 11:11Speaker 1: as forgiveness, and it can be translated that way, but
- 11:14Speaker 1: a covering is actually a much better understanding of what
- 11:18Speaker 1: the word atonement means. So it's not exactly forgiveness, but
- 11:24Speaker 1: it kind of is. So let me give you a
- 11:25Speaker 1: little analogy here that I thought up all by myself,
- 11:28Speaker 1: because this is something that I do. Have you ever
- 11:32Speaker 1: like walked into a filthy room and you're like, oh
- 11:35Speaker 1: my gosh, I got to clean this filth off my floor.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And so you grab everything and you either throw it
- 11:43Speaker 1: in the closet or you throw it in a pile
- 11:46Speaker 1: somewhere like in the corner, or you tuck it under
- 11:48Speaker 1: the bed or under the desk or anywhere that it's
- 11:51Speaker 1: like out of sight. Because I do that all the time.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie. When I was a little kid,
- 11:55Speaker 1: I used to get in trouble all the time because
- 11:57Speaker 1: when my parents told me to clean my room, I
- 11:59Speaker 1: would just shove it all under my bed and not
- 12:01Speaker 1: think about it. It was covered, and I was like,
- 12:04Speaker 1: this is a problem for another day, not going to
- 12:07Speaker 1: deal with it right now. It was covered. In other words,
- 12:11Speaker 1: there was kipor I guess over it, if you want
- 12:14Speaker 1: to use the Hebrew word for it. So think about
- 12:16Speaker 1: it the same way in the Old Testament days where
- 12:20Speaker 1: the sins were still there, but they were covered by
- 12:24Speaker 1: the blood of the animal. They weren't gone, they were covered.
- 12:29Speaker 1: They were kind of like out of sight until a
- 12:32Speaker 1: later time, so that God wasn't disgusted with the individual.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And they're like sin out in the open. The blood
- 12:41Speaker 1: of the goats and the bulls and the sheep would
- 12:45Speaker 1: cover the sins of the people. But going back to
- 12:48Speaker 1: Hebrews ten, verse four, it was impossible that the blood
- 12:52Speaker 1: of bulls and goats would take away the sins. They
- 12:55Speaker 1: could cover over the sins, but they could not take
- 12:59Speaker 1: away the sins. There is only one sacrifice that could
- 13:03Speaker 1: take sins away completely. Because going back to my analogy,
- 13:07Speaker 1: you know, you get all the junk out of sight,
- 13:10Speaker 1: out of mind by throwing it under your bed or
- 13:13Speaker 1: under your desk or whatever, but you know it's still there.
- 13:17Speaker 1: You still have that kind of like sinking feeling in
- 13:20Speaker 1: your stomach, or you're like, yes, I do have to
- 13:22Speaker 1: get to this at some point, just not right now,
- 13:25Speaker 1: not even tomorrow, not even in a few weeks necessarily,
- 13:28Speaker 1: but I still have to get to it. Doesn't it
- 13:31Speaker 1: feel so much better when you finally get to all
- 13:34Speaker 1: that junk under your bed and you throw away the
- 13:36Speaker 1: crap that you don't want, and you put your dirty
- 13:39Speaker 1: clothes in the laundry and hang them up, and you
- 13:41Speaker 1: make everything clean, and you know at that point that
- 13:45Speaker 1: when you walk into your room and it looks clean,
- 13:47Speaker 1: it actually is clean. It's not just stuffed away somewhere.
- 13:52Speaker 1: That is what Jesus did. He took away the sins.
- 13:56Speaker 1: He made it clean. The blood of the goats and
- 13:59Speaker 1: the bulls was necessary because it covered the sins, but
- 14:02Speaker 1: it didn't take the sins away. Only Jesus could do that.
- 14:07Speaker 1: So now the author of Hebrews in verse five quotes
- 14:11Speaker 1: from my favorite Psalm, Psalm chapter forty. And this is
- 14:16Speaker 1: the septuagen version of this Psalm, by the way, So
- 14:19Speaker 1: it's slightly different than if you go to Psalm forty,
- 14:22Speaker 1: verses six through eight and read it in whatever version
- 14:25Speaker 1: you read from. Because the Septuagint, by the way, was
- 14:27Speaker 1: the Greek version of the Bible during the days of
- 14:30Speaker 1: the guy who wrote Hebrews. So there's a septuagent version
- 14:33Speaker 1: of Psalm forty and also a Hebrew version of Psalm forty.
- 14:36Speaker 1: They're very close to each other, but there is one
- 14:39Speaker 1: thing that makes them slightly different. So I could open
- 14:41Speaker 1: up a can of worms and talk about, you know,
- 14:44Speaker 1: the infallibility of the original text. But instead of going
- 14:49Speaker 1: down that rabbit trail, I'll just tell you that that
- 14:52Speaker 1: I believe the Bible right here that we have is
- 14:56Speaker 1: God's word. I believe that God is all powerful and
- 15:00Speaker 1: that he can sustain his word. If he is all powerful,
- 15:02Speaker 1: and he can create the entire universe and create humanity
- 15:06Speaker 1: and all the animals and everything, he can certainly preserve
- 15:10Speaker 1: his word. So in Hebrews chapter ten, we have the
- 15:13Speaker 1: septuagent version of Psalm chapter forty, and going back to
- 15:17Speaker 1: Psalm forty, we also have the Hebrew version of it,
- 15:20Speaker 1: which means that both versions of Psalm forty is God's
- 15:24Speaker 1: word because it was preserved in scripture. I'll talk about
- 15:29Speaker 1: what the difference is here in a second. So it
- 15:32Speaker 1: says in Hebrews ten five through seven, therefore when he
- 15:37Speaker 1: comes into the world, Jesus, he says, you didn't desire
- 15:41Speaker 1: sacrifice and offering, but you prepared a body for me,
- 15:46Speaker 1: And so that's where it differs slightly from Psalm forty
- 15:50Speaker 1: verse six, which says sacrifice an offering you didn't desire.
- 15:55Speaker 1: So that's the difference. Now the author says that this
- 15:58Speaker 1: is Jesus speaking, and it's true. I mean, David, who
- 16:02Speaker 1: wrote Psalm chapter forty is considered to be a prophet.
- 16:05Speaker 1: But the main point here is that God doesn't desire
- 16:08Speaker 1: sacrifice and offering. Verse six of Hebrews ten, you had
- 16:13Speaker 1: no pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Then I said, behold, I have come in the scroll
- 16:20Speaker 1: of the book that has written of me to do
- 16:21Speaker 1: your will, Oh God. And that's pretty much word for
- 16:24Speaker 1: word of what you'll read in Psalm forty seven and eight.
- 16:28Speaker 1: The point is God doesn't desire sacrifices and offerings, and
- 16:32Speaker 1: the Old Testament Jews they believed that that is what
- 16:36Speaker 1: God wanted. They were like checking off boxes. They said, Oh, okay,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I brought my dove into the temple today, so I'm
- 16:44Speaker 1: all good, see you God. I'll go do whatever I
- 16:47Speaker 1: want to do now, and then bring my dove again
- 16:49Speaker 1: tomorrow and we'll be all good again. Knowing now what
- 16:53Speaker 1: the word atonement means, you can see now why God
- 16:57Speaker 1: got so disgusted with the practice of animal sacrifices later on,
- 17:02Speaker 1: because the people were doing it the wrong way, not
- 17:05Speaker 1: understanding that it was a covering over sins, and that
- 17:09Speaker 1: eventually their sins were getting so bad that the animal
- 17:12Speaker 1: sacrifices weren't even working anymore because they were done with
- 17:15Speaker 1: the wrong heart. They were becoming needlessly done. The animals
- 17:19Speaker 1: were losing their lives for no reason. It was just
- 17:22Speaker 1: so corrupt. After a while. In the Book of Malachi
- 17:26Speaker 1: and the Old Testament, God talks about how much he
- 17:27Speaker 1: hated the animal sacrifices. After a while, and all the
- 17:31Speaker 1: festivals that the people were celebrating, these religious festivals, acting
- 17:34Speaker 1: like they were so holy. God was sick of the religiosity.
- 17:38Speaker 1: He wanted the heart to turn toward him. He wanted
- 17:42Speaker 1: the people to have faith in the Messiah, even before
- 17:47Speaker 1: the Messiah came to earth. He wanted the people to
- 17:50Speaker 1: have faith. And there were Old Testament people that had
- 17:52Speaker 1: faith in Jesus before Jesus even came to earth, because
- 17:56Speaker 1: they believed in the Messiah, and they understood how God
- 18:00Speaker 1: didn't desire sacrifices and offerings. They understood that it had
- 18:04Speaker 1: to do with the heart more so than anything else.
- 18:07Speaker 1: But going back to Hebrews ten eight through ten, it's
- 18:11Speaker 1: kind of funny because the author starts explaining what these
- 18:14Speaker 1: verses in Psalm forty means, kind of like what I do,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I guess on the podcast. No, I'm not trying to
- 18:19Speaker 1: compare myself to the author of Hebrews, not comparing myself
- 18:23Speaker 1: to this man at all, because he is much more
- 18:26Speaker 1: intelligent than I am, but he starts explaining what Psalm
- 18:29Speaker 1: chapter forty actually means. Here he says, sacrifices and offerings
- 18:35Speaker 1: and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you didn't
- 18:39Speaker 1: desire neither did you have pleasure in them those which
- 18:43Speaker 1: are offered according to the law. Then he has said, behold,
- 18:48Speaker 1: I have come to do your will. So that's all
- 18:50Speaker 1: talking about Jesus. Jesus did not like the animal sacrifices,
- 18:53Speaker 1: you know, because Jesus is God. Obviously, if God the
- 18:57Speaker 1: Father does not desire animal sacrifices, then Jesus was not
- 19:00Speaker 1: going to desire them as well. Jesus did not like
- 19:03Speaker 1: the animal sacrifices. So Jesus came to do the will
- 19:08Speaker 1: of the Father, which was also his will because he
- 19:11Speaker 1: is God. He willingly came down to offer himself as
- 19:15Speaker 1: the perfect sacrifices, so that animal sacrifice was no longer
- 19:19Speaker 1: needed anymore. And isn't it interesting that a mere approximate
- 19:25Speaker 1: fifty years after Jesus died, that animal sacrifices in Israel
- 19:32Speaker 1: ended like they just ended. To this day, animal sacrifices
- 19:35Speaker 1: aren't really done in any major capacity, maybe in a
- 19:39Speaker 1: minor kind of sense, but in a major capacity, they
- 19:41Speaker 1: are not done. God just ended them because historically the
- 19:45Speaker 1: Romans came in and destroyed the temple, so the Israelite
- 19:48Speaker 1: people didn't really have a place to do the animal
- 19:50Speaker 1: sacrifices anymore, and they just kind of fizzled out over time.
- 19:54Speaker 1: God ended the animal sacrifices pretty significantly. But that's beside
- 19:59Speaker 1: the point. God did not desire the sacrifices, so Jesus
- 20:03Speaker 1: did away with them by sacrificing himself as the perfect
- 20:07Speaker 1: sacrifice for all time. And that is what the author
- 20:10Speaker 1: goes into right here in verse eleven. Every priest, indeed,
- 20:14Speaker 1: so like normal earthly priests, stands day by day, serving
- 20:18Speaker 1: and offering often the same sacrifices, which can never take
- 20:23Speaker 1: away sins. But he or Jesus, when he had offered
- 20:27Speaker 1: one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right
- 20:31Speaker 1: hand of God from that time, waiting until his enemies
- 20:35Speaker 1: are made the footstool of his feet. So all of
- 20:39Speaker 1: that to say, instead of animals being slaughtered to cover
- 20:44Speaker 1: the sins, not even take them away, Jesus took it away.
- 20:48Speaker 1: He made things clean. That's why if you go to
- 20:50Speaker 1: church sometimes you'll hear this Christianese statement that says, I
- 20:53Speaker 1: have been washed to clean from the blood of Jesus.
- 20:56Speaker 1: You know, it probably sounds really weird to non Christians.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Quite honestly, it kind of sounds weird to Christians too,
- 21:01Speaker 1: But that is to say that Jesus, through his sacrifice
- 21:04Speaker 1: literally took away the filth of the sins. He took
- 21:07Speaker 1: it away, he made it clean instead from that time
- 21:12Speaker 1: waiting until his enemies are made the footstool of his feet.
- 21:16Speaker 1: So Jesus right now, as of the time that I
- 21:19Speaker 1: record this episode, Jesus is sitting at the right hand
- 21:22Speaker 1: of God the Father, waiting for a specific time when
- 21:26Speaker 1: he is going to come back again. He is going
- 21:30Speaker 1: to come back again. That is what scripture says. That
- 21:33Speaker 1: is what Jesus said to his disciples. I will come
- 21:36Speaker 1: back again, and that's going to be a very exciting
- 21:38Speaker 1: day for everybody who believes in Jesus. But he's waiting
- 21:43Speaker 1: and he will come again. For by one offering he
- 21:46Speaker 1: has perfected forever. Those who are being sanctified, he has
- 21:52Speaker 1: perfected forever. So there is another verse right there in
- 21:56Speaker 1: Hebrews about how you cannot lose salvation once you gain salvation.
- 22:02Speaker 1: It says right here that his sacrifice has perfected forever
- 22:07Speaker 1: those who are being sanctified. The Holy Spirit also testifies
- 22:12Speaker 1: to us. And then the author quotes Jeremiah thirty one
- 22:16Speaker 1: thirty one through thirty four here, which is the same
- 22:19Speaker 1: thing that he quoted a couple chapters ago in Hebrews eight.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Here's what this says. This is the covenant that I
- 22:26Speaker 1: will make with them. After those days, says the Lord,
- 22:28Speaker 1: I will put my laws on their heart, and I
- 22:31Speaker 1: will write them on their mind. Then he says, I
- 22:34Speaker 1: will remember their sins and their iniquities no more. Remember
- 22:38Speaker 1: what it said at the beginning of Hebrews here that
- 22:40Speaker 1: all of the Old Testament animal sacrifices that were being
- 22:43Speaker 1: done reminded people of their sins year after year, day
- 22:48Speaker 1: by day. It was like a constant reminder of sins.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Who was it reminding? What was reminding the people, I'm
- 22:55Speaker 1: sure and the priests, But it was also reminding God
- 22:59Speaker 1: of the sins of the people. But now that Jesus
- 23:02Speaker 1: offered himself as the sacrifice that takes away sins, God
- 23:08Speaker 1: is not going to remember those sins anymore, because we
- 23:12Speaker 1: have been made clean and to conclude in verse eighteen.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Here it says, now where a remission of these is,
- 23:19Speaker 1: there is no more offering for sin. That verse is
- 23:26Speaker 1: so important for anybody who believes that you have to
- 23:30Speaker 1: do like a daily ritual in order to get close
- 23:33Speaker 1: to God. Where remission of sins is, there is no
- 23:38Speaker 1: more offering for sin. We don't have to keep doing
- 23:40Speaker 1: a daily ritual every single day to get close to God.
- 23:45Speaker 1: It's been done. Jesus took care of it. It is
- 23:48Speaker 1: over with. And if we are doing some sort of
- 23:50Speaker 1: ritual to gain remission from sins, then that means we
- 23:55Speaker 1: don't trust in Jesus's power to save us. And it's
- 23:58Speaker 1: also useless. Now that to say, I've talked a million
- 24:01Speaker 1: times on this podcast about how if you feel a
- 24:05Speaker 1: certain conviction to do something good like keeping the Sabbath
- 24:09Speaker 1: day or you know, doing the kosher food laws in
- 24:13Speaker 1: the Old Testament, or giving tithes or any of those things,
- 24:17Speaker 1: those are good things to do, but again, they do
- 24:20Speaker 1: not gain for us remission of sins. Instead, they just
- 24:24Speaker 1: help ourselves or they help other people. So what this
- 24:28Speaker 1: portion of Scripture comes down to is that we have
- 24:31Speaker 1: grace from Jesus. We have our sin. When we believe
- 24:34Speaker 1: in Jesus, we have our sins taken away from us completely.
- 24:39Speaker 1: We are made clean even when we sin, which we
- 24:42Speaker 1: are still going to sin, because we live here in
- 24:44Speaker 1: a fallen world. We are fallen individuals. Just because we
- 24:47Speaker 1: believe in Jesus does not mean that we are going
- 24:48Speaker 1: to stop sinning completely. We might get better at not sinning,
- 24:53Speaker 1: but we're never going to be fully freed from sin
- 24:55Speaker 1: until Jesus comes back or until we die. Still, even
- 24:59Speaker 1: when we sin, Jesus's blood takes it away, it is gone.
- 25:04Speaker 1: When we confess that sin, it is clean in the
- 25:08Speaker 1: eyes of Jesus. And someday when we stand before God,
- 25:11Speaker 1: the Father, Jesus is going to be there with us.
- 25:14Speaker 1: And when God tells us well done, good and faithful servant,
- 25:18Speaker 1: it's not going to be because we did anything grand
- 25:21Speaker 1: here on earth. It's going to be because we trusted
- 25:24Speaker 1: and obeyed Jesus. That is how we're going to hear
- 25:28Speaker 1: that phrase, well done, good and faithful servant. So unfortunately,
- 25:36Speaker 1: I can't keep going forever on these podcast episodes, because
- 25:41Speaker 1: if I could, I'd probably talk for like two hours
- 25:45Speaker 1: on some of these episodes. But fortunately, I've actually covered
- 25:49Speaker 1: a lot of the topics already on the podcast, so
- 25:52Speaker 1: I'm going to link some related episodes down below so
- 25:55Speaker 1: that you guys can learn about these truths even deeper
- 25:58Speaker 1: and taken even deep dive into scripture if that's something
- 26:01Speaker 1: that you are interested in now. In the meantime, I'm
- 26:04Speaker 1: going to go ahead and move to the last sponsored
