- 0:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to college football addiction. Red river shootout. Is it,
- 0:04Speaker 1: does everybody on your site still call it that? Are
- 0:07Speaker 1: we still there or does anybody go politically correct on
- 0:09Speaker 1: this or are we still having fun?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Red river rivalry, I think, but don't say it. Try
- 0:14Speaker 2: to say it like three times fast and you can't.
- 0:17Speaker 1: That's the problem with it is, you know, um, World's,
- 0:21Speaker 1: you know, the cocktail party, you know, got neutered too.
- 0:25Speaker 1: So we are presented by PrizePix. More on them in
- 0:28Speaker 1: a bit. But, all right, so... I don't think we
- 0:32Speaker 1: talked before Ohio State. We talked before Tennessee. We haven't
- 0:35Speaker 1: really followed up from either of those. Tennessee is the
- 0:37Speaker 1: last time we've seen Texas. So the offense, I don't know,
- 0:41Speaker 1: is the best way to describe. Now, I think Tennessee's
- 0:43Speaker 1: got a really good defense on Texas football, Jerry Hansen. Sorry.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So maybe actually do a real intro here. But the offense,
- 0:50Speaker 1: is it fair to say that it's clunky? Is that
- 0:52Speaker 1: the easiest way to describe it?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah. And I think Sark's used the word inconsistent, right? Yeah.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It's a good word. Yeah, look, I think all Texas
- 1:01Speaker 2: fans are pretty much there. I would think Sark is there.
- 1:06Speaker 2: So I think that's a fair assessment. And, you know,
- 1:09Speaker 2: what's going to be interesting is this will be third
- 1:13Speaker 2: game out of five against one of the elite defensive
- 1:16Speaker 2: coordinators in college football, Matt Patricia, Jim Knowles, and now
- 1:20Speaker 2: Brent Venables. That's pretty much running the gamut of if
- 1:24Speaker 2: your offense is clunky, you're really challenged. Yeah. And Brent
- 1:28Speaker 2: Venables now has four games to watch of Texas, one
- 1:33Speaker 2: against Patricia, one against Knowles, and put everything he's seen
- 1:38Speaker 2: to give Texas the most issues out there on the
- 1:41Speaker 2: field with a week off to prepare. So this is
- 1:45Speaker 2: not a game on either side to get well on offense.
- 1:47Speaker 2: That's the first thing I'd say. Whether it's Oklahoma or Texas,
- 1:51Speaker 2: you're going to get Brent Venables and Will Muschamp, and
- 1:53Speaker 2: they both have a lot of pros. This is not
- 1:55Speaker 2: the week to get healthy on offense.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I know we really talk a lot about like the
- 2:01Speaker 1: actual matchups and deep dive and analytics and all those things.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But I understand the phrase like, Oh, throw everything out
- 2:08Speaker 1: when it's a rivalry game. And I think that's true.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Like obviously as an FSU guy, like we play Miami
- 2:13Speaker 1: in two weeks and I think you can, an aspect
- 2:15Speaker 1: of that is true. And when you play Florida, that
- 2:16Speaker 1: an aspect of that is true. And that's true. You know, Michigan,
- 2:19Speaker 1: Ohio state all, I don't know if there's a rivalry
- 2:22Speaker 1: that gets weirder than Texas and Oklahoma. And I like, I,
- 2:25Speaker 1: you know, and I don't even mean this to offend,
- 2:27Speaker 1: like both sides. It's not in my top, like two, right?
- 2:31Speaker 1: Like I'd put Michigan, Ohio state there. I'd put Alabama, Auburn,
- 2:33Speaker 1: probably like if you're looking like national, but nothing gets
- 2:36Speaker 1: weirder than this one. And I don't know what, like,
- 2:39Speaker 1: is there anything you can attribute that to? Like, why
- 2:42Speaker 1: is that the case here?
- 2:43Speaker 2: I look, I think there is something to be said that,
- 2:46Speaker 2: you know, they're meeting in the middle here. Right. And,
- 2:50Speaker 2: The Cotton Bowl, and it's not the Cotton Bowl presented
- 2:54Speaker 2: by Jerry Jones Stadium over in the enclosed stadium. It's
- 2:56Speaker 2: the original Cotton Bowl. The last time I went to,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and I can't even tell you how many crickets there
- 3:02Speaker 2: were in the stands. It was like I was avoiding
- 3:05Speaker 2: stepping on crickets. There's something historical about the venue. The players,
- 3:13Speaker 2: they walk down the same tunnel. Right? It's real. Like
- 3:18Speaker 2: when you talk to players who have played in the game,
- 3:21Speaker 2: coaches who have coached in the game, I think there's
- 3:24Speaker 2: something that tradition of college football, and it's why I
- 3:29Speaker 2: never want this to become a home-and-home game or move
- 3:32Speaker 2: away from the Cotton Bowl. I think that brings a
- 3:37Speaker 2: lot into it. I just think a lot of these
- 3:40Speaker 2: games have lost to tradition, I think. And this one
- 3:44Speaker 2: has not. And I do think this, too. It's always
- 3:49Speaker 2: been a game where, especially on the Oklahoma side, I
- 3:54Speaker 2: feel like they pull out all the trick plays and
- 3:56Speaker 2: all the stops. And I think there's so much momentum,
- 4:02Speaker 2: sudden momentum change in this game. But I think for
- 4:06Speaker 2: all those reasons, I think it's– and I think a
- 4:10Speaker 2: lot of it is just where they play it. I
- 4:12Speaker 2: really do. I think it feels traditional. It hasn't lost
- 4:17Speaker 2: all that in college sports when we're starting to lose it.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I just think it's one of those games. And I
- 4:24Speaker 2: still think this, even despite the day and age of
- 4:29Speaker 2: the portal, if you look on the rosters, there's so
- 4:33Speaker 2: many kids from the state of Texas, so many kids
- 4:37Speaker 2: that know each other too, right? I mean, A lot
- 4:40Speaker 2: of the fans live amongst each other, too, right? I mean,
- 4:43Speaker 2: I still think it has all the elements of great,
- 4:47Speaker 2: great rivalry. And now, look, I'm probably a little biased.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I grew up in Texas. My father was a football
- 4:53Speaker 2: coach in Texas. I think as far as a rivalry
- 4:57Speaker 2: that's not from the same state, like Alabama-Auburn is a
- 5:01Speaker 2: different deal, right? Neighboring state's rival, I'm not sure there
- 5:05Speaker 2: is one like this. Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 1: You know, you talk about it being at the cotton
- 5:09Speaker 1: bowl and I think there was, this is a different situation,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but what immediately came to my mind when you said
- 5:16Speaker 1: moving it to, if they ever moved it to Jerry
- 5:18Speaker 1: world or wherever, um, or home and home or, you know, whatever.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Florida state at Miami, Florida state, Miami, when it was
- 5:25Speaker 1: on the road in the orange bowl felt different than
- 5:28Speaker 1: Florida state, Miami. Now, now I'll say the two teams
- 5:30Speaker 1: were typically a lot better when they played at the
- 5:32Speaker 1: orange bowl. And so that made a difference too. It
- 5:35Speaker 1: seems like when Florida state, Miami have played for the
- 5:37Speaker 1: last while one's been really good and one's been really bad.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And so you don't get as even of a matchup,
- 5:42Speaker 1: but it did feel different at the old orange bowl.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And I think it's some of that historic. Now, again,
- 5:47Speaker 1: the games are in Tallahassee. Like it's been at Doak forever.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So that's, that hasn't changed. But going into a pro stadium,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and that's not even me, Rob, but, you know, ripping
- 5:54Speaker 1: on Miami for pros that were interested, you know, like whatever.
- 5:57Speaker 1: The old Orange Bowl had a different feel. And I've
- 5:59Speaker 1: never thought about that until you just mentioned, like, oh,
- 6:01Speaker 1: if they ever move this off of here, it would
- 6:03Speaker 1: feel different. So, I mean, that's a great point.
- 6:06Speaker 2: TJ, you have students at Texas or graduates at Texas
- 6:11Speaker 2: that are 35 and 40 now that went and watched
- 6:15Speaker 2: that game with their dad in the same stadium it's
- 6:18Speaker 2: played in today. how many, I mean, there aren't many
- 6:22Speaker 2: rivalries you can really say that about. And I think
- 6:25Speaker 2: that makes it a little, I think that makes it
- 6:27Speaker 2: a little different. I really do.
- 6:30Speaker 1: In this game, you talked about like offense is getting better.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Offense is getting healthy. Um, Oklahoma just saw, I mean,
- 6:38Speaker 1: if we're going to give Texas crap for their offense,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I feel like we could spend an hour doing the
- 6:42Speaker 1: same thing about Oklahoma's offense, which has just been awful.
- 6:45Speaker 1: You know, like it's not been clunky. It's just awful. Um, yeah,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I saw a stat just tonight when, when Oklahoma wins
- 6:52Speaker 1: the turnover battle in the game, they win by, I
- 6:55Speaker 1: don't know, something like 14 when they lose the turnover
- 6:58Speaker 1: battle by one, it's something like they went by eight.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And when they lose the turnover battle by two, it's
- 7:03Speaker 1: like 14 plus, like they're just, you know, and that's
- 7:06Speaker 1: been their problem. They just really can't get a lot going.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And I, I don't know if there's a worse defense
- 7:13Speaker 1: to see in the country when your offense is bad
- 7:16Speaker 1: than Texas. So I'll preface a question with all of that.
- 7:20Speaker 1: What the hell does Oklahoma do to try and to,
- 7:24Speaker 1: to try, like, what do you eat? What's your even
- 7:26Speaker 1: game plan? If you're Oklahoma's offense, like, are you better
- 7:28Speaker 1: off just punting on first down? Like from an efficiency standpoint?
- 7:32Speaker 2: I mean, look, I I've been saying this on our shows,
- 7:36Speaker 2: even about Oklahoma leading up to this game, they have
- 7:41Speaker 2: the Oklahoma I've known as an adult. has been Oklahoma
- 7:46Speaker 2: with really good running back, sometimes an all-time great running back, right?
- 7:49Speaker 2: And Adrian Peters are really good players. DeMarco Murray. They
- 7:52Speaker 2: could always run the football. Oklahoma in recent years has,
- 7:57Speaker 2: let's be honest, has pretty much sucked running the football
- 8:00Speaker 2: from the running back position more than what you're accustomed
- 8:03Speaker 2: to seeing. And this year, TJ, the last three games,
- 8:08Speaker 2: which are at Michigan, New Mexico, Coach X really good.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I've had multiple high school coaches that have won state
- 8:14Speaker 2: titles tell me how good this guy is, and it's
- 8:15Speaker 2: flying under the radar. And then at Georgia, the running
- 8:20Speaker 2: backs have averaged combined 48, 49 yards a game. You
- 8:25Speaker 2: can't– you're not winning in the SEC if your running
- 8:28Speaker 2: backs can't rush for 50 yards, game in, game out.
- 8:32Speaker 2: So there is a– Brent Venable said at SEC Media
- 8:36Speaker 2: Days in Tampa, the goal was 175 rushing yards a game.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Right now, I think they're under 100 and like 130th
- 8:43Speaker 2: in the country. Yeah. They're so far off of where
- 8:46Speaker 2: they wanted to be. That's why you see Brent Venable's after,
- 8:50Speaker 2: I guess it was after the Georgia game was asked,
- 8:53Speaker 2: you know, is there anything about the offense that's good?
- 8:56Speaker 2: And he said, no. And he said nothing. And he sounded,
- 9:00Speaker 2: it sounded, the press conference sounded like a funeral today. Yeah. Now,
- 9:04Speaker 2: he's playing up his guys, right? Sure. This is their
- 9:07Speaker 2: whole season coming up Saturday. But if Oklahoma can't find
- 9:10Speaker 2: a run game against Texas, Mateer's already a riverboat gambler,
- 9:17Speaker 2: risk-taker quarterback. But when he doesn't have any support running
- 9:21Speaker 2: the football behind him, it puts even more pressure on him.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And then going into the game this week, half the
- 9:27Speaker 2: questions that Mateer is answering leading up to it are
- 9:30Speaker 2: job security.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Just before we go on, I will give some love
- 9:33Speaker 1: to our new top 25 poll. A lot of you
- 9:36Speaker 1: are like me and you hate the AP poll. So
- 9:39Speaker 1: I created a better one that you can log in
- 9:42Speaker 1: right now and for free, go create your own top
- 9:45Speaker 1: 25 poll. I'm setting up reminders. I'm working on aggregating
- 9:50Speaker 1: national college football analysts that we all know and love
- 9:53Speaker 1: and respect, or maybe even hate just to get theirs
- 9:55Speaker 1: in there as well. It's super slick. The user interface
- 9:59Speaker 1: is really really easy to use you log in one
- 10:01Speaker 1: time with your google account and you are all set
- 10:04Speaker 1: i'm not going to spam your email i'm not trying
- 10:07Speaker 1: to sell you anything there's no ads on here if
- 10:09Speaker 1: somebody would like to put an ad on there please
- 10:10Speaker 1: let me know but it's just a place where we
- 10:13Speaker 1: can go collectively as fans to Vote on the poll.
- 10:17Speaker 1: The top 25 in college football. We're going to work
- 10:19Speaker 1: on a college football playoff one once we get closer
- 10:21Speaker 1: to November. But go check this out. It's CFATop25. com. Link
- 10:27Speaker 1: is in the description. I'll pin the comment. Go check
- 10:30Speaker 1: it out right now.
- 10:32Speaker 2: I mean, the week of the Texas OU game. So
- 10:36Speaker 2: now the way this rivalry goes, everybody's left OU for dead.
- 10:39Speaker 2: They'll probably win the game. I'm not thinking.
- 10:41Speaker 1: That's what I was saying earlier with it being weird.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Like I don't, I don't see, like I can sell
- 10:47Speaker 1: myself not to go back to FSU, but I can
- 10:50Speaker 1: sell myself on a path to Florida state beating Miami
- 10:52Speaker 1: in two weeks. I think it's incredibly narrow. Like Ashton
- 10:55Speaker 1: Daniels runs like. you know, he threw for three 77
- 10:57Speaker 1: at Bama. If he goes through for three 50 down there,
- 11:00Speaker 1: you get to shoot out. They have penalties and turnovers.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Like I can't, I can't see the path.
- 11:05Speaker 2: He's missing three starting secondary guys, right?
- 11:08Speaker 1: Like they're, they're banged up. They've had guys miss games.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I can see a path. I don't think it happens.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I'm not predicting that. I don't see the path to
- 11:14Speaker 1: Oklahoma winning. So like you said, they probably will.
- 11:17Speaker 2: There's so much pressure on the tier. Yeah. If Oklahoma
- 11:21Speaker 2: can't run the ball effectively at all. I don't see
- 11:25Speaker 2: if Oklahoma can't run the ball effectively at all against Texas.
- 11:30Speaker 2: How they win. Now, it's not Faison Brandon, a true
- 11:34Speaker 2: freshman quarterback, right? But that was a road game at Tennessee. Yeah.
- 11:39Speaker 2: This is a neutral game for Texas, right? This is
- 11:42Speaker 2: a split 50-50 with the fan base in Texas. I just,
- 11:48Speaker 2: that's the hard thing for me. I don't see a
- 11:51Speaker 2: path for Oklahoma if they can't have a breakout game
- 11:55Speaker 2: running the football. Because how, if you can't run the
- 11:58Speaker 2: football and you're in a bunch of third and longs,
- 12:02Speaker 2: your offensive line, it's been banged up. It's had multiple
- 12:05Speaker 2: starting fives. Fasusi hasn't played all year to stud left
- 12:08Speaker 2: tackle the sophomore from the DFW area. How are they
- 12:12Speaker 2: going to hold up in pass pro against the Texas
- 12:14Speaker 2: defensive line? That's the only path for Oklahoma I see
- 12:18Speaker 2: is if they kind of pull a run game together
- 12:20Speaker 2: for the first time, unless there's a bunch of turnovers
- 12:24Speaker 2: on the Texas side, pump return, Tennessee got a pump
- 12:27Speaker 2: return for a touchdown, Texas really bad on special teams
- 12:31Speaker 2: in that game. I think if Oklahoma can't run it,
- 12:34Speaker 2: Texas almost has to give Oklahoma momentum plays.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Which is what, so I was in Knoxville and that's
- 12:40Speaker 1: what happened, right? Like if you, Tennessee made plays, right?
- 12:45Speaker 1: But if Arch doesn't throw the pick, Arch got, I mean,
- 12:47Speaker 1: as much as Faison got sacked, Arch got sacked six times.
- 12:50Speaker 1: If he's not sacked six times, if he doesn't throw
- 12:51Speaker 1: the pick, if you don't give up a special teams touchdown,
- 12:55Speaker 1: the touchdown with, what, a minute and a half left
- 12:59Speaker 1: was kind of just like a, oops, look what I found.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And so you, I don't know, like if you're Oklahoma,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you know, I guess you're hoping your defense replicates what,
- 13:12Speaker 1: Tennessee's did and doesn't get leaned on, on that last drive.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Cause I will say Tennessee's defense played really well. And I,
- 13:19Speaker 1: it felt like they got worn down, you know, on
- 13:21Speaker 1: that last drive where Texas just handed it off for,
- 13:23Speaker 1: I don't know, eight, nine yards of pop that drive
- 13:25Speaker 1: and Tennessee just had nothing left in the tank outside
- 13:28Speaker 1: of that.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Maybe they could have had a shot at the end,
- 13:31Speaker 1: but yeah, that's where, I mean, they're going to go
- 13:34Speaker 1: out there and they're going to ask an absolute ton
- 13:36Speaker 1: out of Oklahoma's defense, which look, they held up against Georgia,
- 13:40Speaker 1: you know, like George, they, they scored, Georgia scored 14.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I'd say unassisted in the, in the first half, you
- 13:47Speaker 1: had the pig six and you had the ball on
- 13:48Speaker 1: the 11 yard line. And one of Georgia's touchdown started
- 13:50Speaker 1: at the 46th of my math is right. So, you know,
- 13:53Speaker 1: 54 yard drive, which I'll give the offense some credit
- 13:55Speaker 1: for that, but they had short fields a lot. And, um,
- 13:59Speaker 1: but material, Mateer hasn't shown the ability to not turn
- 14:03Speaker 1: it over. And so that's, you know, like, I mean,
- 14:06Speaker 1: do you just go super conservative if you're Venables and
- 14:09Speaker 1: just take kind of the, the less risky route until
- 14:12Speaker 1: you have to, like until you get down 14? Um,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I mean, that's a strategy, you know, like it's probably
- 14:18Speaker 1: not the worst one.
- 14:19Speaker 2: To your point though, here's the, here's the issue for Oklahoma.
- 14:23Speaker 2: If they don't have some enough success on first down,
- 14:27Speaker 2: what's their path. I mean, like that are, I think
- 14:31Speaker 2: both teams are going to struggle to long, sustained drive
- 14:35Speaker 2: in this game. So I think first downs are critical
- 14:39Speaker 2: for both of these teams. And first down defense for
- 14:42Speaker 2: the opponent is really big. Because Texas, look, I don't
- 14:47Speaker 2: think Sark wants Arch operating a bunch of third and longs.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Because Oklahoma, I've been saying this on Coffee and Football, TJ.
- 14:54Speaker 2: If you took every position on both teams and you said,
- 14:59Speaker 2: rank them. You'd have the Texas D-line one and the
- 15:02Speaker 2: Oklahoma D-line one. Those would be the top two positions
- 15:05Speaker 2: in this game, very much like the Tennessee-Texas game was.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I could see it being very similar, and no games
- 15:13Speaker 2: are 100% the same. I could see it being very similar.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Who can keep their quarterback out of the most third
- 15:20Speaker 2: and longs in this game? I think it's critical because
- 15:23Speaker 2: Sark doesn't want Arch back there in eight, nine third
- 15:27Speaker 2: and longs in this game either because Oklahoma, Is Tennessee
- 15:30Speaker 2: with a better secondary defense for me?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Talked about Oklahoma's offense. I remember John McKay used to
- 15:39Speaker 1: coach the Bucs. I mean, this is well before my time,
- 15:42Speaker 1: but they asked him one time, what do you think
- 15:43Speaker 1: about your team's execution? And he said, I'm in favor
- 15:45Speaker 1: of it. Kind of reminds me of a kind of
- 15:47Speaker 1: reminds me of the Oklahoma offense, but Texas on offense,
- 15:52Speaker 1: we talk about how good Oklahoma's defense is and they're
- 15:53Speaker 1: going to lean on them heavy and hope that they
- 15:55Speaker 1: can hold. I mean, if you're Oklahoma and you want
- 15:57Speaker 1: a chance, like outside of like a three turnover game
- 16:00Speaker 1: for March or something, I, it almost feels like you
- 16:03Speaker 1: got to hold Texas under 17. Can, you know, can they,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and even that, like, if you told me right now,
- 16:09Speaker 1: Texas score 17, I might say, I still like them,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you know, like, I'm not sure that I think that
- 16:15Speaker 1: the Sooners can get there without turnover special teams. Has
- 16:21Speaker 1: Sark talked about getting better through the bye week? I mean,
- 16:24Speaker 1: both teams got a bye week, but just getting better
- 16:27Speaker 1: offensively and what their play to attack is?
- 16:30Speaker 2: He's talked about consistency when he was asked Monday in
- 16:33Speaker 2: the press conference. And I think that's kind of where
- 16:36Speaker 2: he's diving into. And that's offensive line consistency. That's arch
- 16:41Speaker 2: manning consistency. That's wide receiver consistency. I think he's talking
- 16:45Speaker 2: consistency as a whole. And some Texas fans are hoping
- 16:48Speaker 2: to hear, oh, we've done this and this and this,
- 16:50Speaker 2: but we're not going to tell you. That's not really
- 16:54Speaker 2: where Sark went, which probably means he will. But what
- 16:57Speaker 2: is so interesting about Texas offensively is year one against Oklahoma,
- 17:06Speaker 2: Sark was on fire in the first half of that game.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I think the first game against since then against Venables, though,
- 17:14Speaker 2: Venables has done a really good job on the first
- 17:16Speaker 2: drives of the game against Sark. Remember, you were at
- 17:20Speaker 2: the game last week where Sark's strength is, is the
- 17:22Speaker 2: opening script. He may be the best opening script guy
- 17:27Speaker 2: in college football. That doesn't mean you're the best in-game
- 17:30Speaker 2: play caller. You know that. Give me Chip Kelly right
- 17:32Speaker 2: now or something like that. People argue Lane Kiffin. Give
- 17:35Speaker 2: me the guy that breaks out the wing tee on
- 17:37Speaker 2: Penn State.
- 17:38Speaker 1: That was insane.
- 17:39Speaker 2: The guy is done more with more and he's doing
- 17:41Speaker 2: more with less. That's my guy right now. But Sark's
- 17:44Speaker 2: really good in the opening script. Brent Venables has done
- 17:49Speaker 2: pretty well against the opening script against Steve Sarkeesian. That
- 17:53Speaker 2: is huge, I think, for the Texas offense because you
- 17:56Speaker 2: were there. You saw Arch started 7-8. You're like, whoa.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Is Texas about to go score 28?
- 18:04Speaker 1: I'll tell you. I, so I was at the, well,
- 18:07Speaker 1: they play again this week too. I was at the
- 18:08Speaker 1: Bama Georgia game a couple of years ago.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:11Speaker 1: And that thing started out 28, nothing. And then we're
- 18:13Speaker 1: turned over to stuff. But like, as soon as Texas
- 18:16Speaker 1: did that on what, seven place, six, how many, like,
- 18:19Speaker 1: I was like, oh man, did I just come up here?
- 18:21Speaker 1: Now that game ended up being great. That Georgia Bama one.
- 18:23Speaker 1: But I was like, was Tennessee not what I thought
- 18:26Speaker 1: they were like, am I about to watch like that script?
- 18:28Speaker 1: That was so good. And, um, Yeah, especially in a
- 18:32Speaker 1: game where the overrunner is 39. If you get 14
- 18:35Speaker 1: points out of both teams on the first two drives,
- 18:39Speaker 1: you still may not hit that, but you're starting to
- 18:42Speaker 1: sweat a little bit if you're an underbetter here.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Yes, so my point on that is I think if
- 18:49Speaker 2: Sark wins on the opening script in this game, if
- 18:53Speaker 2: Texas gets off to a good start offensively, if they
- 18:57Speaker 2: can put points on the board, like they did against Tennessee,
- 19:01Speaker 2: and Knowles is a great defensive coordinator, and he's got
- 19:04Speaker 2: really good defensive front. If Texas wins the script, let's
- 19:08Speaker 2: call it, of this game, that puts a lot of
- 19:10Speaker 2: pressure on Oklahoma offensively. If Venables can get this game
- 19:17Speaker 2: into the two-minute warning in the first half, and you're
- 19:21Speaker 2: looking at a 7-3 type game, 7-7 type game, man,
- 19:26Speaker 2: that pressure starts to turn to Texas. I think this
- 19:31Speaker 2: opening script, this opening quarter, is going to be really
- 19:34Speaker 2: big in this game. If Texas gets off to a
- 19:37Speaker 2: good start, they can put a lot of pressure on
- 19:39Speaker 2: the Oklahoma offense.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Do you think Stark will leave his play sheet lying around,
- 19:45Speaker 1: his opening script play sheet? I'll tell you, a lot
- 19:47Speaker 1: of people are giving Deion a hard time for that.
- 19:49Speaker 1: That was the only touchdown. drive they scored. Maybe he
- 19:51Speaker 1: should have left the whole playbook out. Yeah, exactly.
- 19:55Speaker 2: I don't know if you know the history of Texas OU.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Mike Leach left a fake one. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:59Speaker 1: That's what I was thinking.
- 20:00Speaker 2: In the tunnel. In the tunnel and Texas fell for it. Um,
- 20:04Speaker 2: I don't think anything like that's happening. Uh, I don't
- 20:07Speaker 2: see that.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I mean, not, I don't think Dion did it intentionally
- 20:10Speaker 1: just exercise. Yeah.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Brent Venables. Hey, look, Brent Venables was part of that.
- 20:14Speaker 2: So who knows?
- 20:17Speaker 1: Um, I, I talked about Georgia band a couple of
- 20:20Speaker 1: weeks ago. Uh, I find that matchup really, really interesting.
- 20:24Speaker 1: We'll predict, you know, Oklahoma, Texas here in just a
- 20:26Speaker 1: minute and get out. But Georgia Bama, I feel like
- 20:28Speaker 1: I have a little more faith in Georgia's defense, but
- 20:31Speaker 1: I also don't know that they've seen a great offense.
- 20:33Speaker 1: So I think that's just blind faith in Kirby Smart.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And I like the way Keelan's playing. I don't have
- 20:38Speaker 1: any clue who wins that game. I kind of want
- 20:40Speaker 1: to lean Bama because it's there, but I also lose my.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Butt against Kirby Smart. Is the game even going to
- 20:47Speaker 2: be played at this point?
- 20:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's true. Maybe that's the better prediction.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Are they going to move it to a dome stadium somewhere?
- 20:52Speaker 2: I'm not sure what's going to happen. I will say
- 20:56Speaker 2: this about Alabama. I think that the game against FSU,
- 21:02Speaker 2: people are, oh, yeah, Bama, it's the same Bama. I
- 21:04Speaker 2: think we know after FSU, your team went out and
- 21:07Speaker 2: put a whooping on Virginia. Then maybe FSU is a
- 21:10Speaker 2: little better than I'm giving credit for, okay, offensively. I
- 21:14Speaker 2: would say with Alabama, the thing that just my naked
- 21:18Speaker 2: eye is telling me, they're an improved team at almost
- 21:22Speaker 2: every position. Does that mean they're going to beat Georgia?
- 21:25Speaker 2: It doesn't. But I think this Alabama team is a
- 21:28Speaker 2: lot better than last year. Am I predicting national championships?
- 21:32Speaker 2: Way too early for all this stuff. But I do
- 21:35Speaker 2: see a much– and a lot of people are just
- 21:37Speaker 2: throwing it to Keelan Russell. It goes beyond that, though.
- 21:41Speaker 2: They're tight ends. Yeah. I mean, their offensive line looks better.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Yeah, they remember that they can run the ball.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Yeah. Can Georgia– here's the thing in that game. Georgia's
- 21:53Speaker 2: best defensive players are their linebackers. Yeah. I think Alabama's
- 21:59Speaker 2: offensive line is still susceptible to pass rush, but does
- 22:03Speaker 2: Georgia have the front to do it? I'm not sure
- 22:07Speaker 2: they have the defensive front to do it. And can
- 22:10Speaker 2: you– I think the key against Alabama is– when you
- 22:13Speaker 2: play them is can you create pressure with four? Yeah.
- 22:17Speaker 2: If you can create pressure with four, it becomes much
- 22:20Speaker 2: easier to slow down Kalen DeBoer's offense with a dynamic quarterback,
- 22:24Speaker 2: with an improved running game, with a really good receiver core.
- 22:28Speaker 2: If Georgia has to bring the extra hat to get pressure,
- 22:32Speaker 2: then I think that plays into Kalen DeBoer's hands. Then
- 22:35Speaker 2: on the flip side of that is can Georgia control
- 22:39Speaker 2: the game with their run game? I'll tell you the
- 22:41Speaker 2: most interesting stat, TJ, was last week. I was just
- 22:44Speaker 2: flipping through, and I was watching C.J. Carr against North Carolina,
- 22:48Speaker 2: and it popped on the screen. The last 22 national
- 22:51Speaker 2: champions have averaged 160 yards rushing or more per game.
- 22:56Speaker 2: And now I've got that circled. I'm like, okay, and
- 22:59Speaker 2: you get in games like this, who can run the ball?
- 23:02Speaker 2: Can Georgia do what they always do, run the football?
- 23:06Speaker 2: Wherever they go, on the road, at home, whatever game
- 23:10Speaker 2: it is, can they play their style? If they can
- 23:13Speaker 2: play their style against Alabama, if that game's played in Tuscaloosa,
- 23:18Speaker 2: I think they have a good shot. But on the
- 23:21Speaker 2: flip side, I think Alabama's better in almost every position.
- 23:24Speaker 2: So can Georgia actually create pass rush with four, or
- 23:28Speaker 2: are they going to have to bring more hats? Because
- 23:30Speaker 2: Alabama's a much better team, I think, personnel-wise than they
- 23:33Speaker 2: were a year ago.
- 23:34Speaker 1: My buddy Danny that I do a big three show with,
- 23:36Speaker 1: Florida Florida State and Miami, has continued to bring up
- 23:40Speaker 1: rushing yardage. And I think we get so trendy. We
- 23:42Speaker 1: were talking at the beginning of this about like just
- 23:45Speaker 1: old school rivalry, things that matter in college football. We
- 23:48Speaker 1: get so trendy and it feels like every year there's
- 23:50Speaker 1: a new stat, you know, like average yards to go
- 23:53Speaker 1: on third down for offense and defense, or you turn
- 23:56Speaker 1: over margins always been big or time of possession, this, that,
- 23:58Speaker 1: and the other. if you just look at rushing yards,
- 24:01Speaker 1: like if you just look at rushing yards in almost
- 24:03Speaker 1: every game, it tells you the story of how the
- 24:06Speaker 1: game went, the team that wrote the football, but, and
- 24:08Speaker 1: it's so boring and it's so simple. Not, not, I
- 24:11Speaker 1: like seeing teams run the ball, but just from an
- 24:13Speaker 1: analytical standpoint, everybody's an analytics nerd. Now, if you just
- 24:16Speaker 1: look at rushing yards, that's usually enough to look at.
- 24:19Speaker 2: If you're running the ball, you're making more first downs.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Your defense is rested. I mean, you're probably not putting
- 24:26Speaker 2: the ball in harm's way as much. And it's amazing, like,
- 24:30Speaker 2: if you go look at the teams that are averaging
- 24:33Speaker 2: over 160 yards rushing right now that are contenders, that
- 24:37Speaker 2: I would say are contenders, and I'm not counting Texas
- 24:39Speaker 2: Tech and BYU, no offense, Tech will be 6-6 in
- 24:41Speaker 2: the SEC this year. They don't look good. Sorry, Tech
- 24:44Speaker 2: fans out there. But, and BYU will be about the same. Indiana, Miami, Georgia.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I mean, LSU's running it with Lane. We'll see if
- 24:56Speaker 2: they're healthy enough. Notre Dame. over 160 yards rushing per game.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Now it's, but really you look at the styles of
- 25:04Speaker 2: play and like some people like Notre Dame, they don't
- 25:06Speaker 2: play anybody. And I'm not saying they're going to win
- 25:08Speaker 2: a title, but you know what? They have an identity, right?
- 25:12Speaker 2: Miami has an identity. Indiana has an identity. You, when
- 25:17Speaker 2: you turn them on, you know what the identity of
- 25:21Speaker 2: that team and that program is. And so it's doesn't
- 25:25Speaker 2: in Georgia, the same way with Kirby. So it comes
- 25:27Speaker 2: without surprise that, that if the 160 yards rushing per
- 25:31Speaker 2: game is a benchmark, those four teams are probably going
- 25:34Speaker 2: to be in it all year in terms of matching
- 25:37Speaker 2: the number you need. Does that mean Indiana are going
- 25:39Speaker 2: to win a national championship this year? I don't know.
- 25:41Speaker 2: It's too early. But to your point, Alabama is now
- 25:44Speaker 2: averaging 187 rushing yards per game, and last year they
- 25:47Speaker 2: couldn't have run the ball. That's a big switch. That's
- 25:50Speaker 2: a big 180 they've made.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Something in-game, too, and I mentioned this with the Tennessee game,
- 25:55Speaker 1: but something in-game that you notice is it is– I mean,
- 26:01Speaker 1: Texas did not have a great rushing day at Tennessee
- 26:03Speaker 1: by any means. Their defense did a really good job.
- 26:06Speaker 1: But when a team is able to wear somebody down,
- 26:10Speaker 1: that running attack is like your best friend in the
- 26:13Speaker 1: fourth quarter.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Look how Texas beat Ohio State.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Yeah. You thought they'd have to pass. And they made–
- 26:19Speaker 1: Arch hit some throws for sure. But when you can
- 26:22Speaker 1: lean– and that word gets brought up so much. But
- 26:24Speaker 1: when you can lean in the fourth quarter, when hands
- 26:25Speaker 1: are on hips and guys are kind of bowing their heads,
- 26:28Speaker 1: And that was the difference in– I mean, they were
- 26:30Speaker 1: one anyway. You know, you take away an onside kick
- 26:32Speaker 1: and a prevent touchdown. But when they leaned, that's when
- 26:36Speaker 1: the game was put away, you know.
- 26:37Speaker 2: And they did it without Hollywood Smothers, who is their
- 26:39Speaker 2: best– Yeah, out for the game. Yeah. Who is their
- 26:41Speaker 2: best runner. Like, in Relique Brown, he had a great effort.
- 26:46Speaker 2: He's not a between-the-tackles guy, but he had to be
- 26:49Speaker 2: to the best of his ability on the road at Tennessee.
- 26:52Speaker 2: But Texas did that without Smothers. So, Texas healthy. Running back,
- 26:56Speaker 2: Derek Cooper, healthier. after an off week because he had
- 26:59Speaker 2: had the high ankle, the grade one he'd been dealing with.
- 27:03Speaker 2: But now you're full speed at running back this week
- 27:05Speaker 2: as well for Texas. So I think they need all
- 27:09Speaker 2: that to run on Oklahoma on this defensive front because
- 27:12Speaker 2: I think Oklahoma is going to win a considerable amount
- 27:15Speaker 2: of matchups in the one-on-ones in their defensive front seven.
- 27:19Speaker 2: So Texas is going to have to– they're going to
- 27:21Speaker 2: have to find a way to run the football because
- 27:23Speaker 2: the one thing I know about Texas going into this
- 27:26Speaker 2: game If they get outrushed by Oklahoma in this game,
- 27:29Speaker 2: they're going to throw their hands up because that should not.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Fan base will lose their mind.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Do you like the under? Give me a score for
- 27:37Speaker 1: this and we'll get out of here.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Man, every time. It's a rivalry game. I'm going to
- 27:42Speaker 2: say Texas 23-14, so I guess I am going with
- 27:45Speaker 2: the under. 23-14. Yeah, I think I was close. I
- 27:48Speaker 2: think I was like 21-10 or 21-13 or something like that.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I think I'm kind of in the same. it'll shock
- 27:58Speaker 1: me if somebody gets to 28 in this one, but again,
- 28:01Speaker 1: it's the rivalry. So we'll probably both be wrong.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Somebody's going to need help to get the 28. Somebody
- 28:06Speaker 2: needs some help, whether it's turnover, pick six special teams. Yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Somebody's going to need help unless there's just coverage bus,
- 28:15Speaker 2: which I don't think we've seen much of on either
- 28:19Speaker 2: side this year. Yeah.
- 28:21Speaker 1: What do you guys got coming this week and where
- 28:22Speaker 1: can people follow and check out all your stuff?
- 28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, look, on Texas football, a YouTube channel on texasfootball.com.
- 28:29Speaker 2: I've got a big thread going. I'm on the road
- 28:31Speaker 2: seeing recruits. I've been to see Jabarius Garore, Texas commit,
- 28:35Speaker 2: Jason Crenshaw, linebacker at Prattville, a new target that Texas offered,
- 28:39Speaker 2: Junior Tupou over at Thompson, over by Birmingham, Derwin Fields
- 28:44Speaker 2: in Mississippi. So I'm making my way to Dallas, seeing
- 28:47Speaker 2: a bunch of the Texas commits and targets. But we'll
- 28:50Speaker 2: have shows throughout the week on the YouTube channel. Come
- 28:53Speaker 2: join us at ontexasfootball.com for discussion, talk recruiting, talk football.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Whatever you want to talk, we're here for you.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Appreciate you, man. The fans always love when you're on.
- 29:02Speaker 1: They say, dude, this is our guy. So I always
- 29:05Speaker 1: appreciate you taking time, and we'll talk to you soon, bud.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Absolutely. Thanks, TJ.
