- 0:03Speaker 1: There's a movie that I saw recently where there's a
- 0:05Speaker 1: baby that's a thief. Wait, no, I'm serious. This is
- 0:10Speaker 1: a contemporary movie, the virgins. Please help me. Is it
- 0:13Speaker 1: boss baby? It's not. Boss babies wages. Did sailorman ever
- 0:25Speaker 1: fight like any kind of Wolf Monster? Probably there was
- 0:29Speaker 1: probably a wolf monster, vampire monster, you know, big Spaghetti Monster. Okay, well,
- 0:34Speaker 1: that would be um great to know. I'm sure our
- 0:37Speaker 1: guest today would really appreciate thoughts, since they were famously
- 0:41Speaker 1: Um maulled by wolves on famous showtimes hit series yellow jocket.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Oh my God, rose are like Fan girling has, like
- 0:52Speaker 1: you know, manifested, has tram infested into something. That means
- 0:56Speaker 1: that someone on a show that we watch listen. We
- 1:00Speaker 1: watched that, we watch and have speculated a very embarrassingly
- 1:04Speaker 1: spewed conspiracy theory. And yet and then we found out
- 1:08Speaker 1: that they listen. Yes, so we found out that LIV HOUSTON,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Um from yellow jackets, is a fan of the pod,
- 1:16Speaker 1: is a virgin. So of course we had to get
- 1:20Speaker 1: them on to talk all about sailor moon but also,
- 1:25Speaker 1: like many other things, this is a very tangenty episode.
- 1:29Speaker 1: We're going to talk about ever after. We're going to
- 1:31Speaker 1: talk about Florence and the machine. We're going to talk
- 1:33Speaker 1: about the return of Um Indie sleeves, Lord of the Rings. Yeah,
- 1:37Speaker 1: we really, we really went up, down around and UH,
- 1:41Speaker 1: like the plane crashed in this episode and we had
- 1:45Speaker 1: were stuck in the wilderness and had to figure it out. And,
- 1:47Speaker 1: much like the ribbons in the transformation sequences of sailor moon,
- 1:51Speaker 1: we really spun all the way out, because this is
- 1:55Speaker 1: like a virgin, the show where we give yesterday's pop
- 1:57Speaker 1: culture today's takes. I'm rose Damo and I'm Fran Toronto,
- 2:02Speaker 1: Fighting Evil Light, love by day light. Never run from
- 2:11Speaker 1: a real fight. She is the one named sailor or.
- 2:15Speaker 1: They are the one named sailor. You know what? I've
- 2:23Speaker 1: been thinking about? Getting into real estate? Um, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 2:28Speaker 1: you have not. That's just your that is a very
- 2:31Speaker 1: fake segue into the next conversation, but we on the
- 2:33Speaker 1: podcast have to say that we at like a virgin,
- 2:36Speaker 1: do not believe in Um, the autonomy of landlords, and
- 2:40Speaker 1: hopefully we'll never become landlord, brand Lord, Frand Lord and Lord.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I will not. Okay, anyways, you were you were starting
- 2:48Speaker 1: a very clunky segue into our first discussion topic. Do
- 2:52Speaker 1: you want to go? Do you want to go in? Yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 1: you know, the for the past week, I would say,
- 2:59Speaker 1: all I've been thinking about on a loop is one
- 3:03Speaker 1: thing and that is the extreme television excellence that is
- 3:09Speaker 1: selling the C. It is. I mean there are only
- 3:14Speaker 1: like six or eight episodes in this first season. It
- 3:16Speaker 1: was very short and I honestly felt that the ending
- 3:19Speaker 1: was kind of abrupt and I when like the thing
- 3:22Speaker 1: ended and it was like other titles to watch, I
- 3:24Speaker 1: was like that's the end of the season. I thought
- 3:27Speaker 1: there would be another episode, and I get you know,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I'm sure with the way that that selling sunset has
- 3:34Speaker 1: been rolling out like, there's probably another season coming like
- 3:37Speaker 1: pretty soon and they're saving like the rest of the
- 3:41Speaker 1: drama for it. But Fund selling the O C, the
- 3:44Speaker 1: main drama that happens at the end of the season
- 3:47Speaker 1: is everyone's mad about Kayla trying to make out with
- 3:52Speaker 1: tyler and her being slut shamed by some of the
- 3:57Speaker 1: girls for it. I think some deservedly so, because she
- 4:02Speaker 1: did try to hook up with her married co worker.
- 4:07Speaker 1: She was asking for it, is what is what you
- 4:09Speaker 1: were saying. I'm not saying she was asking for I'm
- 4:11Speaker 1: not saying she should have been slut shamed, but I
- 4:14Speaker 1: think the false equivalency that the two Alex has made
- 4:19Speaker 1: that her doing that was the same thing as the
- 4:23Speaker 1: nosy thing, the girl's kissing his nose. It's not the
- 4:27Speaker 1: same thing. Like that's obviously like like a sort of
- 4:29Speaker 1: weird but like playful thing between co workers, and a
- 4:33Speaker 1: woman earnestly trying to get her married coworker to hook
- 4:36Speaker 1: up with her is slightly different. Yeah, it's not the
- 4:39Speaker 1: same thing, but it is a double standard and I
- 4:43Speaker 1: still am, by the finale, on team Kayla, even though
- 4:46Speaker 1: I think Kayla kind of sucks. Actually, I'm on team
- 4:49Speaker 1: Tyler because, you know, no, no, no, I actually think
- 4:53Speaker 1: he's like the most boring looking, kind of Fart faced
- 4:56Speaker 1: guy in the whole cast. I don't understand he's so
- 5:00Speaker 1: sec he's the hottest one. I disagree. I don't understand
- 5:03Speaker 1: why he is like the pinnacle of attractiveness in this
- 5:06Speaker 1: show because he virtually has no personality. But he did interject.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Doesn't need one, true, but he did interject and cut
- 5:14Speaker 1: through the bullshit in a very severe way that I
- 5:17Speaker 1: thought was effective and wonderful, because this is why we
- 5:22Speaker 1: need men. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, I actually
- 5:24Speaker 1: this is a tangent, if we can hot between the two.
- 5:27Speaker 1: This is something that also happened in the most recent
- 5:29Speaker 1: season of real housewives of Beverly Hills, which you haven't
- 5:32Speaker 1: watched yet, I don't think, because I'm kind of like
- 5:34Speaker 1: five episodes behind, because I think it's bad. You've fallen
- 5:37Speaker 1: off a little bit. Let me tell you, they're an
- 5:38Speaker 1: aspen and it's getting really good. I won't spoil it
- 5:41Speaker 1: for the virgins, but there is a moment where one
- 5:45Speaker 1: of the most heated arguments ever is happening between two
- 5:47Speaker 1: of the housewives and Maurice CEO Steps in in an
- 5:52Speaker 1: unprecedented intervention and he seriously, like he throws like a
- 5:57Speaker 1: bucket of water on the tension, like it was like
- 5:59Speaker 1: such just so bring effect, and it's very similar to
- 6:02Speaker 1: how tyler like walks and it's like hey, I know
- 6:04Speaker 1: there's a reality TV show happening, but actually, like real life,
- 6:07Speaker 1: like humans, like we don't need to be doing this
- 6:09Speaker 1: right now. Um, it's kind of antithetical to like reality
- 6:12Speaker 1: TV show like ethos, Um, but did you like this
- 6:15Speaker 1: most recent episode of brings the power? I didn't okay,
- 6:20Speaker 1: tell me why. I think what happened when I watched
- 6:26Speaker 1: the first three episodes is like I got you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: I was I was on a roll with it. I
- 6:32Speaker 1: was like really experiencing it all as a whole, as
- 6:36Speaker 1: an h o l e and as a w h
- 6:38Speaker 1: o l M. I was experiencing it as a whole
- 6:42Speaker 1: because I am a whole and it's my experience and
- 6:46Speaker 1: I still there's still a lot that's working for me.
- 6:50Speaker 1: The way it's shot is beautiful, the music is beautiful,
- 6:54Speaker 1: the stuff with L Rond and Doran is really working
- 6:59Speaker 1: for me. And decided the action sequences and the action sequences.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It could not be more clear that L Ron, Duran
- 7:05Speaker 1: and DIESEA are working their way towards becoming a poly
- 7:08Speaker 1: fuel Um. But it is kind of boring and I
- 7:17Speaker 1: really started to see what you were talking about about
- 7:21Speaker 1: the costumes this week. Sorry, and really it really hit
- 7:26Speaker 1: home when I finally started watching House of the Dragon,
- 7:30Speaker 1: which I had been hesitant to watch a because I
- 7:33Speaker 1: was so burned by the end of game of thrones
- 7:35Speaker 1: and also be I just wanted to wait until the
- 7:37Speaker 1: whole season was out and watch it all at once.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But on finding out that you had watched an episode,
- 7:43Speaker 1: I was like, okay, I gotta and looking at the
- 7:49Speaker 1: show side by side and watching. I actually watched house
- 7:52Speaker 1: of the dragon right after I watched the new episode
- 7:54Speaker 1: of rings. The production value and costumes on house of
- 7:59Speaker 1: the drag and are infinitely better than there are in
- 8:03Speaker 1: rings of power. I think rings of power is shot
- 8:07Speaker 1: more cinematically and it's more kind of lush and beautiful,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and that is by design. House of the Dragon is
- 8:17Speaker 1: much darker in tone and also like literally visually darker,
- 8:22Speaker 1: but it just looks better. You know, I I experienced
- 8:28Speaker 1: something of the same and I have some lingering thoughts
- 8:30Speaker 1: off of like last week's chat about the rings of
- 8:33Speaker 1: Power Dichotomy. And one of the things in terms of
- 8:37Speaker 1: like the visuals that I think must be acknowledged is like, yes,
- 8:41Speaker 1: like when the Lord of the Rings trilogy was like
- 8:44Speaker 1: shooting their movies, they were using the best equipment and
- 8:46Speaker 1: the best cameras humanly possible, but it was still so
- 8:50Speaker 1: long ago that there's this like lovely little gauge and
- 8:53Speaker 1: blur that's like on everything, and I think that like
- 8:56Speaker 1: now that we're watching rings of power with like the
- 8:59Speaker 1: highest deft Hamera, is known to man. It's like I
- 9:02Speaker 1: when I don't want to see the wig line, you
- 9:05Speaker 1: know what I mean, like I don't want seriously like
- 9:07Speaker 1: put the blacks making cameras worse. You know what? Well,
- 9:11Speaker 1: movies used to be shot in a way where there
- 9:14Speaker 1: was still the ability to have sort of this like
- 9:17Speaker 1: vassiline haze over everything, something left to the imagination. Yeah,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and now we don't have that and you either find
- 9:24Speaker 1: a way to work around it or you don't, and
- 9:27Speaker 1: I think unfortunately, rings of power hasn't, and it's what
- 9:31Speaker 1: I'm really noticing. is like it's the wide shots that
- 9:34Speaker 1: are beautiful, it's the landscapes, but as soon as you
- 9:37Speaker 1: zoom in a little too far on anything, it's clocky
- 9:40Speaker 1: t shop, Mama, it's cocky t shop, and you know,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I wanted to say that. And rings the power is
- 9:46Speaker 1: clocky and House of the Dragon's kind of unclockable. I'm clockable.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And you know, speaking of the wide shot and visuals,
- 9:54Speaker 1: action sequences, when, Um, in the first scene of rings
- 9:59Speaker 1: of power, when the Regent Queen is, you know, having
- 10:03Speaker 1: that dream that our city is flooding, that epic so incredible,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and then snap, it's actually a dream. And it's not real.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And I was like wait, actually, like I was kind
- 10:14Speaker 1: of waiting for the show to have steaks like that
- 10:17Speaker 1: and for like something that I thought about when I
- 10:20Speaker 1: did the same thing that you did, watching the most
- 10:22Speaker 1: recent episode of House of Dragon and then jumping over
- 10:24Speaker 1: to rings of power, was that the steaks of haven't
- 10:27Speaker 1: watched the most recent I won't Dragon. I won't spoil
- 10:30Speaker 1: the most recent episode. I'm just speaking generally about it.
- 10:33Speaker 1: The steaks of House of Dragon are very human and
- 10:38Speaker 1: very concrete. It's like you fucked this person, this person
- 10:41Speaker 1: sucked that person, this person wants to kill this person, raphile,
- 10:46Speaker 1: this person and murderer. Yes, and the game of thrones
- 10:50Speaker 1: has always been a political drama, and that is the
- 10:52Speaker 1: thing that really drew people to it when the show
- 10:56Speaker 1: started and why it spawned this craze is for fantasy.
- 11:01Speaker 1: That directly led to US having the rings of power,
- 11:04Speaker 1: which is it turned high fantasy into something that people
- 11:09Speaker 1: who watched shows like the Sopranos Could Watch and engage
- 11:14Speaker 1: with and understand, because it is very human and it's
- 11:17Speaker 1: about people with power behaving badly. Um, like, especially the
- 11:22Speaker 1: first season of game of thrones, like it is kind
- 11:25Speaker 1: of like the Sopranos with dragons. House of the Dragon
- 11:28Speaker 1: isn't even smaller story than game of thrones, because game
- 11:32Speaker 1: of thrones had a Zombie Apocalypse and like the rebirth
- 11:37Speaker 1: of dragons into the world and so many characters, yes,
- 11:41Speaker 1: so many characters spanning across multiple continents, and House of
- 11:46Speaker 1: the Dragon is actually literally just about one family and
- 11:50Speaker 1: all of their political intrigue, with like a couple different
- 11:54Speaker 1: side stories, like the whole stuff that's going on in
- 11:56Speaker 1: the stepstones. But it is by design much smaller and,
- 12:00Speaker 1: I think, easier to grasp and the rings of power
- 12:05Speaker 1: is just because we know what it's all leading towards
- 12:08Speaker 1: and because of how many characters there are and locations
- 12:13Speaker 1: there are, even though I think it does a good
- 12:14Speaker 1: job of helping you figure out who they are and
- 12:17Speaker 1: where they are, it is just so much heavier and
- 12:21Speaker 1: it's so big that it's hard to wrap your brain around.
- 12:26Speaker 1: And it's like I'm watching Galadriel do all this stuff
- 12:30Speaker 1: and I think it would be easy to be like
- 12:33Speaker 1: why she's so pissed, like what? Why she's like I
- 12:38Speaker 1: kind of sometimes feel like she's and I think this
- 12:43Speaker 1: is somewhat by design, like you're supposed to understand that
- 12:45Speaker 1: this is someone who's like playing for d chest and
- 12:48Speaker 1: looking a thousand moves ahead and no one else is
- 12:51Speaker 1: on her level. But she still has to share scenes
- 12:55Speaker 1: with these people and it's just like it's I don't
- 12:59Speaker 1: know it, especially in this episode, it like wasn't really
- 13:02Speaker 1: working for me. And also her goal is not becoming
- 13:07Speaker 1: more concrete. The stakes are not getting higher, for it's
- 13:10Speaker 1: one no, and it's like, at the end of the day,
- 13:13Speaker 1: Gladuel is just a war hawk, like a war Hawk
- 13:16Speaker 1: with like really personal interests, and I like that her
- 13:20Speaker 1: character is flawed in that way. But like, I don't know,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I just I I wish that she was uglier. I
- 13:27Speaker 1: wanted her to be ugly. I want her to get
- 13:30Speaker 1: in her emotions. Well, I want her to fuck this
- 13:33Speaker 1: episode gave her a new person that she had amazing
- 13:36Speaker 1: chemistry with, which was the Queen region. I wanted them
- 13:39Speaker 1: to kiss. Well, now that they're going to travel together, well,
- 13:43Speaker 1: they should hook up, but they never will. Nothing Gay
- 13:45Speaker 1: will ever happen on the rings of power. I loved
- 13:50Speaker 1: the Dwarf Song Girl so good, stunning. I rewound. She
- 13:55Speaker 1: sounded great. I wonder if that's her real voice? I wonder,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I'm I would imagine. Yea, I bet you I. It seems.
- 14:01Speaker 1: It was so beautiful and it was something we dropped
- 14:03Speaker 1: the album seriously and we've never seen a song like
- 14:06Speaker 1: that in like the Lord of the Rings Lore. It
- 14:09Speaker 1: felt so seamless in the world of dwarves Um something
- 14:13Speaker 1: that I just like little little hanging lingering notes from
- 14:17Speaker 1: the episode. I thought it was really cool that there
- 14:19Speaker 1: was like a few seconds where we saw an ORC burial. Um.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember this, but like humanized
- 14:27Speaker 1: the ORCs a little bit and it's the first time
- 14:29Speaker 1: we've ever seen like the other side of like ORC life,
- 14:33Speaker 1: beyond like them, you know, bickering or getting mad at
- 14:36Speaker 1: each other. You know what I do? You think absolutely
- 14:40Speaker 1: they've Um. Yeah, we really honestly, I wish the show
- 14:45Speaker 1: would be more should I know you will Um. But yeah,
- 14:50Speaker 1: let's talk a little bit more about the House of
- 14:52Speaker 1: the Dragon. So you did not watch game of thrones, right?
- 14:57Speaker 1: I actually I watched all of it. Um. But yes,
- 15:01Speaker 1: but watched is a generous term to use in describing
- 15:07Speaker 1: the fact that I did, yes, sit in front of
- 15:09Speaker 1: the TV as every single episode did play. But did
- 15:13Speaker 1: I retain everything in the game of Thrones Universe? No, no,
- 15:17Speaker 1: I did not. Okay, did you read the game of
- 15:20Speaker 1: thrones books? No, I have not read any of that. Now, okay,
- 15:24Speaker 1: I've read all. I've read all the game of thrones
- 15:26Speaker 1: books and I read not the entirety of fire and blood,
- 15:30Speaker 1: which is the book of Targarian history that George R
- 15:34Speaker 1: Martin wrote, and the story that House of the Dragon
- 15:38Speaker 1: is based on is one of the chapters in that
- 15:41Speaker 1: book and I think it's really interesting watching it because
- 15:45Speaker 1: the way that it's written in the book is like
- 15:49Speaker 1: it's as if, I mean, fucking George R Martin, like
- 15:52Speaker 1: he can't get these last two books out, but he
- 15:54Speaker 1: literally wrote a whole book that is like fake accounts
- 16:00Speaker 1: of a fake family in his fantasy series. So the
- 16:03Speaker 1: the way that Hustle the Dragon, that story of this
- 16:06Speaker 1: targarian civil war, like that's what this is building to.
- 16:10Speaker 1: It's told in this book as if like it's a
- 16:12Speaker 1: history book and these are the accounts of people who
- 16:15Speaker 1: were there, and so it's not like a story, like
- 16:18Speaker 1: there's no dialog, it's a history. So I've watched the
- 16:23Speaker 1: first three episodes. What I like is acting is great.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I think the girl who plays young re Neerer, I
- 16:34Speaker 1: just call her. I just call her mini Denis. Who
- 16:36Speaker 1: knows what any of their names are? She's she's a
- 16:40Speaker 1: great actress. Um, I wish she and her little friend
- 16:45Speaker 1: who fucked her dad hooked up, because they obviously how
- 16:51Speaker 1: did vibe the as we said, the costumes are amazing.
- 16:57Speaker 1: The C G I is really good. I think the
- 16:59Speaker 1: Dragons Look Matt Smith Wonderful. Matt Smith is so good,
- 17:03Speaker 1: perfect the universe. The actress who plays the the Queen
- 17:09Speaker 1: who never was, you know, the Queen who got passed
- 17:12Speaker 1: over for her cousin. I think, yeah, her cousin. She's
- 17:18Speaker 1: amazing and needs more to do. I love her and
- 17:20Speaker 1: her husband. Um, it's all like all the parts are working.
- 17:25Speaker 1: For me, some of the stuff that isn't is I
- 17:27Speaker 1: think it just moves too fast, like it's so much happens,
- 17:33Speaker 1: and I understand that's because we're dealing with a story
- 17:36Speaker 1: that unfolds across a lot of time. We're going to
- 17:39Speaker 1: get older versions of some of the younger actors and
- 17:43Speaker 1: future episodes. I just think like I was watching the
- 17:48Speaker 1: first episode and I felt like it should have ended
- 17:53Speaker 1: with the baby dying and that whole storyline should have
- 17:57Speaker 1: been stretched out over multiple episodes, but things are presented
- 18:04Speaker 1: and then resolved pretty quickly. And also VI Serra's the king,
- 18:11Speaker 1: is like kind of too nice. I think he should be.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Like obviously he makes like fucked up decisions, like deciding
- 18:18Speaker 1: to kill his wife so that his baby could love,
- 18:22Speaker 1: you know, just a mile, just just that little decision
- 18:24Speaker 1: about killing his wife, Um marrying his daughter's best friend.
- 18:28Speaker 1: But also, like he for game of thrones, especially what
- 18:32Speaker 1: we're judging against, game of thrones, and like people who
- 18:35Speaker 1: did really terrible things for power. Like for the most
- 18:38Speaker 1: part he kind of like tries to do good things,
- 18:42Speaker 1: like he tries to bond with his daughter and like,
- 18:45Speaker 1: I don't know, I just think that. I just thought
- 18:48Speaker 1: that was interesting. It's like there's some people who were
- 18:51Speaker 1: acting like somewhat rationally, and I think it's probably to
- 18:54Speaker 1: contrast that against how evil things are going to get eventually. Leave. Also,
- 19:01Speaker 1: Sir Christen Cole, so hot. Yeah, that's actually the other
- 19:05Speaker 1: thing you know about House of Dragon that I appreciate
- 19:08Speaker 1: is that the show's depiction and idea of evil is
- 19:12Speaker 1: so concrete and, like, you know, it's like pedophiles and
- 19:16Speaker 1: murderers and traders and like it's right there in your face. Um,
- 19:21Speaker 1: even if it's complex, it's right there in your face.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And like we toil keen, it's like the franchise is
- 19:27Speaker 1: like idea of evil is so much more amorphous and
- 19:31Speaker 1: abstract and, Um, I don't know, I I it's capital
- 19:35Speaker 1: e evil, you know, capital instead of, you know, human evil. Yes, exactly,
- 19:41Speaker 1: and and I don't mind that. It moves fast, but I,
- 19:45Speaker 1: you know, have a short attention span. One thing I
- 19:48Speaker 1: really need is that I need the Targarians to have
- 19:52Speaker 1: bleached brows, because it's not it doesn't make sense that
- 19:55Speaker 1: they're all famously platinum lady Gaga blaw but have dark eyebrows.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I I also feel like, you know, these these these
- 20:06Speaker 1: blonde dreads, these silver dreads, they look good on some
- 20:09Speaker 1: and not good on others. And and it's not. It's
- 20:12Speaker 1: not an issue with the hair, it's an issue with
- 20:13Speaker 1: the WIG. is a hat is sitting but on the skull,
- 20:18Speaker 1: and I'm like, just like like the little girl who
- 20:20Speaker 1: they tried to marry off to the king and her
- 20:23Speaker 1: like huge head of white curls is like Mama Mama
- 20:27Speaker 1: and the wigs are better on the House of the
- 20:29Speaker 1: Dragon Than They are in rings of power. I will
- 20:31Speaker 1: say that, and something I think about constantly with any
- 20:35Speaker 1: fantasy show, is they did not have indoor plumbing. It
- 20:39Speaker 1: must smell rotten up in there. Yeah, yeah, it definitely does.
- 20:45Speaker 1: They all smell bad, have disgusting teeth. Um. Another good
- 20:51Speaker 1: thing I'll say for the House of the Dragon is
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's obviously very aware of a lot of the criticism
- 20:57Speaker 1: that was leveled at game of thrones about how it
- 20:59Speaker 1: you women, the nudity of women and the sexual violence, Um,
- 21:05Speaker 1: and kind of just violence in general, and is not
- 21:08Speaker 1: leaning into them as much and I think actually the
- 21:11Speaker 1: showrunners have said that they will not do that the
- 21:15Speaker 1: way the game of thrones did, which is great. You know,
- 21:18Speaker 1: the bars on the floor, so so happy to see that.
- 21:23Speaker 1: The violence also feels like it it's a little tapered,
- 21:26Speaker 1: like it's still really violent and I don't think it's
- 21:29Speaker 1: necessarily a huge improvement. But like they aren't showing h
- 21:35Speaker 1: the way these bodies are being mangled as much like
- 21:38Speaker 1: they're showing like some restraint, which I apprear. I mean,
- 21:41Speaker 1: you know the birthing scene and the sort of like
- 21:45Speaker 1: forced c section in the first episode was hard to watch,
- 21:49Speaker 1: but I just kept thinking this would have been so
- 21:51Speaker 1: much corrier on game of thront, like you would have
- 21:54Speaker 1: seen her pussy on game of throne and you would
- 21:57Speaker 1: have watched them tear the baby out of her girl.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Truly like watching Silomon as a kid. I remember feeling
- 22:18Speaker 1: like palpable envy with like the transformation sequences, where I
- 22:21Speaker 1: was like, Oh, I will never have that happen, like
- 22:24Speaker 1: I will never feel that like this sort of like
- 22:26Speaker 1: spinning around in a liminal space and lights of shining.
- 22:28Speaker 1: It's like there's no way for me to recreate that
- 22:30Speaker 1: in real life. The socks. What's the closest you've ever gotten? Um,
- 22:36Speaker 1: it's like, I don't think I have yet, but what
- 22:39Speaker 1: I the closest thing I imagined, which is also something
- 22:41Speaker 1: I felt after seeing like the two thousand and six
- 22:44Speaker 1: live action paid a Pan, which is just like I
- 22:46Speaker 1: just want, I want to do something where I'm on wires,
- 22:47Speaker 1: like I just I want to fly around somewhere. Um,
- 22:50Speaker 1: I used to do aerial silks. That so I when
- 22:56Speaker 1: I was like nineteen, eighteen, I, Um, I got really
- 23:02Speaker 1: into Arial Silks for a couple of years and I
- 23:04Speaker 1: got pretty good at it, but then I started traveling
- 23:06Speaker 1: for work more and you cannot take it with you.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Not a pordable skill set, so I sort of let
- 23:12Speaker 1: it fall to the wayside. But that was probably the
- 23:14Speaker 1: closest thing in real life to like a magical girl
- 23:17Speaker 1: trans I loved it. I really love uh, not seriously, no,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I mean we were always practicing with Matt S underneathus
- 23:26Speaker 1: and stuff. They like. They don't let you up there
- 23:28Speaker 1: with nothing until you could do it for a living. Basically,
- 23:31Speaker 1: is it real silk or is it like a polly blend?
- 23:33Speaker 1: I'm sure it's a poly blend. Like it's stretchy. It's
- 23:36Speaker 1: like when you try to buy silk pillow cases on Amazon,
- 23:39Speaker 1: like pcent polyester. It's like, okay, babe, this is not
- 23:42Speaker 1: doing what you think it's doing. I love to sweat.
- 23:45Speaker 1: I love to do it. The aerial silks really are
- 23:48Speaker 1: exactly like sailor when transformations, like they're literal silk ribbons
- 23:51Speaker 1: that like wrap around them like when they transform, but
- 23:54Speaker 1: like the transformation sequences, like there is something about that
- 23:57Speaker 1: that you attached to as a kid, because I also
- 24:00Speaker 1: of like Um, they were being gay. Yeah, it's it's
- 24:03Speaker 1: most like I just have, you know, my my cultural yeah,
- 24:09Speaker 1: it's actually it's just like a screen and like a
- 24:11Speaker 1: high pitched, like beeping sound. It's like listening to Aba.
- 24:14Speaker 1: It's just like it's different. There's like I remember being like,
- 24:19Speaker 1: I don't know, like before pre middle school, so maybe
- 24:22Speaker 1: like tween preteen vibes, like going to blockbuster and getting
- 24:27Speaker 1: like this vhs tapes that have like eight episodes on
- 24:30Speaker 1: them or something like that. At a time. You would
- 24:32Speaker 1: watch like six to eight episodes and that was all
- 24:34Speaker 1: you could get and I would like there were only
- 24:36Speaker 1: two at blockbuster and just rewatched those like sixteen episodes
- 24:39Speaker 1: like over and over again. But there's something about the
- 24:41Speaker 1: transformation sequences that just like really captures your imagination and
- 24:46Speaker 1: also just like trans like you know what I mean,
- 24:49Speaker 1: like it's very just like I just want to be
- 24:51Speaker 1: something else. But, you know, retroactively. It is kind of
- 24:55Speaker 1: hilarious that every time they fight someone, like the bad guys,
- 24:58Speaker 1: have to like wait seven for them to like chance.
- 25:01Speaker 1: They're like, Oh my God man, it's quite polite. It's
- 25:05Speaker 1: like now she's doing a number guys. Just wait, just wait,
- 25:07Speaker 1: just wait. So did you first discover sailor moon? WAS
- 25:11Speaker 1: THAT ON TV? It was like a Saturday morning. It worked.
- 25:15Speaker 1: But yeah, so, I so. I mean it came out
- 25:17Speaker 1: into Um, but I saw it in like two thousand
- 25:21Speaker 1: and one. I think it was two thousand and one,
- 25:23Speaker 1: because I think I was in kindergarten Um, and it
- 25:26Speaker 1: was like, for for whatever reason at that time on
- 25:29Speaker 1: I don't remember which channel, but like public TV in
- 25:31Speaker 1: Australia in the mornings, like Um, Dragon Ball Z and
- 25:35Speaker 1: sailor moon would air back to back and so my
- 25:37Speaker 1: older brother and I would wake up and watch them
- 25:39Speaker 1: both Um, either on the weekend or before going to school,
- 25:42Speaker 1: I don't remember. So I was like five, and could
- 25:46Speaker 1: you ask for a better age to get really into
- 25:48Speaker 1: sailor moon and it it really it resonated with not
- 25:52Speaker 1: just me but like a lot of kids in my grade.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Like we would play sailor moon like imagine ARY Games
- 25:57Speaker 1: together at school for years. Like my like sailor mercury
- 26:01Speaker 1: was my first crush, unlike any fictional character ever was
- 26:06Speaker 1: sailor mercury. Okay, so sailor mercury was your crush. Which
- 26:10Speaker 1: one of them did you want to be? It is
- 26:11Speaker 1: a different question and I don't. I'm sure I was
- 26:15Speaker 1: trying to remember like when my friends and I played
- 26:18Speaker 1: sailor moon at school. It's like who, who was who?
- 26:21Speaker 1: And I don't remember. I don't remember who was who.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I don't remember if we took turns or if we
- 26:26Speaker 1: like made up our own if it was like we've
- 26:29Speaker 1: just learned how many planets there are, what the moons
- 26:32Speaker 1: of the planets are, so we're gonna be our own
- 26:34Speaker 1: sailor scouts. I think. I think it changed, Um, but
- 26:38Speaker 1: I remember vividly being like in love with sailor mercury.
- 26:42Speaker 1: She's hot. I mean they're all hot. Oh yeah, sailor mercury, though,
- 26:46Speaker 1: is very like mean mommy, like sexy, mean mommy, like very,
- 26:50Speaker 1: like hot, like them top kind of vibes. Yeah, and
- 26:53Speaker 1: she's like she's really smart and like I liked her.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Power is the best. And it was that true, like
- 26:59Speaker 1: sort of Um, pre aware gay kids thing of like, no,
- 27:02Speaker 1: I just really like her. I just think she's great.
- 27:04Speaker 1: It's it's not important. Which one did you want to be?
- 27:08Speaker 1: I also don't remember who was your favorite. I'm sure,
- 27:10Speaker 1: like if we were, I also like used to play
- 27:12Speaker 1: like Sailorman as a kid or like and you would
- 27:15Speaker 1: kind of Duke it out for like who's who. But
- 27:16Speaker 1: I'm sure I was like I'm going to be sailor
- 27:18Speaker 1: Pluto like this, like, was there a sailor pluto? Ever?
- 27:22Speaker 1: I'm sure it was little right. Was Younger? No, that's
- 27:26Speaker 1: Chimby Moon, who was so fucking annoying. There's that one
- 27:32Speaker 1: arc where she gets like aged up and she's evil
- 27:35Speaker 1: and she's in like the all black outfit and it's
- 27:37Speaker 1: very fierce. I don't know if there was a sailor Pluto.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I think I just wanted to be sailor Pluto because
- 27:42Speaker 1: I thought that was cool. But this was back when
- 27:43Speaker 1: Pluto was a planet and it's I'm trying to remember
- 27:47Speaker 1: now whether my friends and I also imagine the sailor
- 27:49Speaker 1: Pluto because we were trying to take the planets off,
- 27:51Speaker 1: or if there actually was one. But you know, in
- 27:53Speaker 1: that era, playing power rangers was also a huge thing,
- 27:56Speaker 1: but everyone just wanted to be the Red Ranger. And
- 27:58Speaker 1: the thing about, like, you know, choosing power rangers is
- 28:01Speaker 1: like none of the power rangers have any really distinct
- 28:05Speaker 1: character or personality traits, like you just kind of pick
- 28:08Speaker 1: your favorite color and that's the one thing. Well, I
- 28:10Speaker 1: wanted to be the pink ranger. Obviously, Kimberly Kimberly, the
- 28:15Speaker 1: most nineties name possible. Yeah, Kimberly. God, where all the Kimberly?
- 28:19Speaker 1: Kimberly and Danielle. Those were like the nineties names speaking up.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Ever after, Daniel de barback, come on, it is it's
- 28:27Speaker 1: probably like one of the most important movies of my time.
- 28:31Speaker 1: It's one of my favorite films, and it's like it's
- 28:35Speaker 1: so bizarre now to like think about like being nine
- 28:38Speaker 1: and really loving that movie and then when I when
- 28:41Speaker 1: I worked on Santa Clarita Diet, I was like, wow,
- 28:44Speaker 1: if only I could go back to me at nine
- 28:46Speaker 1: and say, like, you're going to work with real which
- 28:48Speaker 1: is now something I can also say about Melanie Lynskey
- 28:50Speaker 1: in that Oh my God, and you just okay, Angelica
- 28:54Speaker 1: Houston's next. Then we'll get you with Richard O'Brien. Yes, please. Um,
- 28:59Speaker 1: who else is? And the other evil step sister and
- 29:04Speaker 1: Houston should be on yellow jackets. That would be sick.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Oh my God, I just got goose bumps. Um, yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 1: ever after, truly incredible. Another thing that captures the imagination
- 29:19Speaker 1: of like transformation. Yeah, just like I'm going to be
- 29:23Speaker 1: one upped like and get my full glamp. And it's
- 29:27Speaker 1: also very class conscious. I liked that. It was like
- 29:31Speaker 1: it was like a fairy tale movie and a period
- 29:33Speaker 1: pace at the same time, like it took Cinderella very seriously. Yes,
- 29:37Speaker 1: I appreciate it. And it was also like Leonardo Da Vinci.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I couldn't get enough of that. Was Not who could
- 29:43Speaker 1: have been Gayer in the movie? Definitely he was. He
- 29:48Speaker 1: was because he, you know, he was sucking in fucking.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Definitely sucking and fucking. Um. Okay, my favorite sailor scout
- 29:57Speaker 1: with sailor Venus, because I liked that in the lore
- 30:00Speaker 1: of the show she was like famous. Oh Yeah, wait,
- 30:04Speaker 1: Tom I don't remember that. There was this whole thing
- 30:07Speaker 1: with like Sailor v right at the beginning. Yeah, and
- 30:10Speaker 1: like and like, Um, you know, Serena was like obsessed
- 30:14Speaker 1: with her and then she came to school and then
- 30:17Speaker 1: was also one of the sailor scouts. Okay, here's the things.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Like I don't really remember a lot of the plot
- 30:22Speaker 1: specifics of sailor moon because it's not really about that.
- 30:25Speaker 1: It's more about vibes. When it's so interesting too because
- 30:29Speaker 1: like at the time for us there were there were
- 30:31Speaker 1: a couple of different versions of it. Like I like
- 30:34Speaker 1: it's it's on Hulu now. So, like last night I
- 30:37Speaker 1: like went on and watched a couple of episodes to
- 30:39Speaker 1: like remind myself of the structure in the the show, because
- 30:41Speaker 1: I was like, wait, I'm not six, do I remember
- 30:43Speaker 1: what happens? Um, and they have like the they have
- 30:47Speaker 1: a subtitled version and then like a dubbed version. Um,
- 30:50Speaker 1: but the dubbed version is not the English version that
- 30:53Speaker 1: was airing when we were younger. Yeah, like it's uh,
- 30:57Speaker 1: it's just like a a dial translation of the Japanese version,
- 31:02Speaker 1: but the English version that was on when we younga
- 31:04Speaker 1: was like completely different. Full Liberty is taken. Yeah, like
- 31:09Speaker 1: re edited, like a lot of things, Americanized. Plot details
- 31:13Speaker 1: changed well, and they made the gay characters and you're like, well,
- 31:18Speaker 1: these cousins are really close, aren't and like the English
- 31:21Speaker 1: opening titles, Um, that we remember a completely different like
- 31:24Speaker 1: the fighting evil by Moonlight Song and the animation that
- 31:27Speaker 1: goes with it is not the same at all. It
- 31:31Speaker 1: would be cheating, because I looked it up last night.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I do know by heart it's a good song. It's
- 31:37Speaker 1: so good. I mean the guitar riff. Yeah, yeah, its
- 31:40Speaker 1: there actually has to be. There should be a contemporary
- 31:43Speaker 1: pop star that covers that for our generation. Who would
- 31:45Speaker 1: you want to cover it? I mean, I don't know why,
- 31:49Speaker 1: but I immediately thought of Jojo cat, but she's kind
- 31:51Speaker 1: of covering a lot of things, like she covered. would
- 31:54Speaker 1: like a Miley Cyrus like rock cover. Oh, when you
- 32:02Speaker 1: said plastic cards, I immediately thought marina and the dind
- 32:05Speaker 1: Mari would I mean marina is in certain eras has
- 32:11Speaker 1: been a little sailor Mooney, like I would say fruit
- 32:14Speaker 1: is kind of sailor moon vibes. I mean maybe just
- 32:18Speaker 1: because of like the Skut and the boots, but I
- 32:20Speaker 1: think Ariana would do a good job. Yeah, but I
- 32:22Speaker 1: don't know that I would love her version the most,
- 32:25Speaker 1: although I was listening to sweetener on my way here.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Often want to do yeah, but it would be I
- 32:31Speaker 1: mean actually we were also talking about Florence before Florence.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Laurence would be insane. Would turn into like a funeral,
- 32:40Speaker 1: dirty tambourines and like the drum, like that bit of
- 32:44Speaker 1: the Charlie's Angel Song where Lana like makes everything. Yeah, yeah,
- 32:50Speaker 1: she really killed the VIBE. Florence would make a great
- 32:53Speaker 1: sailor moon villain. Oh my God, well, Queen Beryl. Queen
- 32:57Speaker 1: Beryl is Florence a little bit like Beryl is. Also,
- 33:00Speaker 1: we're talking about hot mommy, Mommy Vibes. Queen Beryl will
- 33:04Speaker 1: step on you absolutely and you will ask her for
- 33:07Speaker 1: more for the virgins. Do you want to explain who
- 33:09Speaker 1: Queen Beryl is? She's like she's the O G Sailor
- 33:12Speaker 1: Moon Villain and she has like this big, like flowing
- 33:15Speaker 1: purple dress and like redhead down to her waist and
- 33:18Speaker 1: she's mean and she's a she and she, yeah, she
- 33:22Speaker 1: is Florence. Florence. Could play her in the sailor moon
- 33:24Speaker 1: live action. Okay, sailer Moon live action film. But but
- 33:31Speaker 1: I don't know that could ever happened, because how could
- 33:34Speaker 1: they do the transformation sequences right? No, would be disappointed.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Let's let's let's think imaginatively, let's let's know. Okay, because
- 33:43Speaker 1: in thirty years, when C G I has progressed enough
- 33:47Speaker 1: to the point where they can make it happen, well, yeah,
- 33:49Speaker 1: we could do like a ray visit of some old
- 33:51Speaker 1: school practical like whatever they were doing for Barbarella, but
- 33:53Speaker 1: like space Barrella. Oh my God, I have never actually
- 33:58Speaker 1: watched that movie, like all the way through. You would
- 34:01Speaker 1: love it. Yeah, I've also never seen it. We should
- 34:06Speaker 1: do a Jane Fonda episode. But here's the thing. If
- 34:08Speaker 1: Florence is the villain and you're I'm going to say
- 34:11Speaker 1: sailor Urinus, because the episode that I watched a prep
- 34:14Speaker 1: for this show was the episode where Haruka's kind of
- 34:19Speaker 1: like introduced as a character and they're introduced as a
- 34:22Speaker 1: boy in disguise and all of the sailors have like
- 34:25Speaker 1: an immediate crush on them and I think the creator
- 34:29Speaker 1: of sailor moon was like on the record being like
- 34:32Speaker 1: this sailor's a boy and a girl, and then like
- 34:36Speaker 1: there were moments it was clarified, or like there were
- 34:38Speaker 1: arguments about it or whatever, but like it's full like
- 34:42Speaker 1: you don't know what gender I am, but you're hot
- 34:44Speaker 1: for me and therefore you're gay. Like that is like
- 34:46Speaker 1: the vibe. That's quite explicit and purposeful. Yeah, okay, we
- 34:52Speaker 1: can voice the cats. I'm a Luna. It's honestly kind
- 34:59Speaker 1: of sad how accurate that is, like, I think in
- 35:02Speaker 1: any animation. If I ever if I ever get into
- 35:05Speaker 1: voice that we're acting, there'll be like, okay, you're the
- 35:07Speaker 1: gay annoying cat like and we'll we'll still do some
- 35:10Speaker 1: kind of like motion capture work on set where they
- 35:13Speaker 1: like it will be giving dots. It'll be the DOTS
- 35:19Speaker 1: on the face. No, no, not just the face, girl,
- 35:21Speaker 1: full gollumn like green screen, like yeah, or like Bennett's
- 35:25Speaker 1: cumberbatcha smelled an forgot about that. Yeah, I did. I
- 35:31Speaker 1: mean I did go to cats school at the junket
- 35:34Speaker 1: for the cats musical in London. So I did learn
- 35:37Speaker 1: how to move like a cat. See, everything's pulling into
- 35:40Speaker 1: place for the preparation today. Were you at theater, kid,
- 35:57Speaker 1: or anything like that? What productions did this? This is
- 36:03Speaker 1: an unsafe space, but you know, like I, it's to
- 36:07Speaker 1: the extent that you imagine. Yes, absolutely, one percent, like
- 36:11Speaker 1: I I did. I did drama in high school, obviously,
- 36:15Speaker 1: but not only that. Like where I learned how to
- 36:17Speaker 1: be an actor is through doing like workshops and plays
- 36:20Speaker 1: with a local theater company in my hometown from like
- 36:22Speaker 1: fourteen and up. Um, I was. I was brutus and
- 36:26Speaker 1: Julius Seeson my final year of high school. No, yeah, yeah,
- 36:31Speaker 1: it was. It was fun, Um, and I oh, I
- 36:36Speaker 1: loved it. I loved every second of it. But yeah,
- 36:38Speaker 1: like that's theater stuff like lights up my brain like Um, firework,
- 36:43Speaker 1: and all of us are recovering the kids in one
- 36:46Speaker 1: way or another. That's just what being queer is pretty much. Well,
- 36:50Speaker 1: do you still have the same like love of theater
- 36:53Speaker 1: you like, or is it more of like a nostalgic no,
- 36:55Speaker 1: I love it. Yeah, I miss what's your role? I Beatrice,
- 37:01Speaker 1: and much to do about nothing. Oh, that's good, great answer. Yeah,
- 37:05Speaker 1: I really want to gets I don't remember the plot.
- 37:08Speaker 1: So Beatrice is, Um, is funny and like quite bold
- 37:14Speaker 1: and quite self possessed and much as you about nothing.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Is is about like a couple of things. But, um,
- 37:21Speaker 1: it's my favorite love story in Shakespeare. There's like Beatrice
- 37:24Speaker 1: and benedict who like fight like like ostensibly do not
- 37:28Speaker 1: get on. But they don't get on because they have
- 37:30Speaker 1: history and I've known each other for a long time
- 37:32Speaker 1: and like a really good at pissing each other off,
- 37:34Speaker 1: which of course means that like that turns into banter
- 37:37Speaker 1: and then they have been in love the whole time
- 37:38Speaker 1: and it's wonderful. It's like, Oh, the person you've known
- 37:40Speaker 1: forever who, like, annoys the ship out of you. You
- 37:42Speaker 1: know what? That does a lot for me. Um, it's
- 37:45Speaker 1: a great play. You Love Shakespeare? Yes, a lot. I
- 37:48Speaker 1: also love Shakespeare, as we have talked about, your favorite play.
- 37:51Speaker 1: It is. It's my favorite play of his. Rose do
- 37:54Speaker 1: remind me of yours. Okay, I go back and forth
- 37:59Speaker 1: between amid summer night's dream and the tempest, my two favorites,
- 38:04Speaker 1: and like it kind of depends on the vibe. Like
- 38:06Speaker 1: I do like that the tempest is like weird and
- 38:08Speaker 1: sad and that it's like the last. It's quite melancholy.
- 38:12Speaker 1: But I mean midsummer is just like. Have you seen
- 38:16Speaker 1: the national theater live recording of the production of midsummer
- 38:19Speaker 1: that gwendoline Christie's in? So they so she plays Um Titania,
- 38:24Speaker 1: but they swapped to Tanya and Oberon's roles in the play.
- 38:28Speaker 1: She Fox with him. Think is beyonce's love on top
- 38:33Speaker 1: in a really good way. It's awesome. Okay, crushes yours
- 38:38Speaker 1: with sailor mercury, mine with Tuxedo mask. What can I say?
- 38:41Speaker 1: And Queen Beryl, and this, this should have tipped me
- 38:43Speaker 1: off as to like my whole deal earlier on, I think.
- 38:46Speaker 1: But like, even as a kid watching sailor moon, every
- 38:48Speaker 1: time Tuxedo masks showed up, I was always like who's
- 38:51Speaker 1: this guy? Get him out of here, like it's go away.
- 38:55Speaker 1: I was always so annoyed whenever he would show up.
- 38:57Speaker 1: He is pretty annoying and like all he does is
- 38:59Speaker 1: neg yeah, sailor moon, he's mean. Yeah, and isn't like
- 39:04Speaker 1: he's like older or something. She's a textually fourteen. Yes,
- 39:10Speaker 1: it's one of the first things she said. She's fourteen,
- 39:14Speaker 1: loves meatballs or has meat. She's a cry baby. Yeah,
- 39:20Speaker 1: she's a fourteen year old. And he's like did they
- 39:24Speaker 1: ever say, like what? Do you ever really find out
- 39:27Speaker 1: what his whole deal is? I never paid attention. No,
- 39:29Speaker 1: I mean you find out that they are like reincarnated
- 39:32Speaker 1: lovers from the moon. Well, that's the whole thing. Is
- 39:37Speaker 1: that like Serena or like Osagi, if you know, the
- 39:40Speaker 1: original is like was the queen of this like of
- 39:45Speaker 1: the moon or like some other magical planet, Princess empress something,
- 39:50Speaker 1: and then she sent herself and all of the sailor
- 39:54Speaker 1: scouts to Earth to be reborn and Tuxedo mask as well, yeah,
- 39:59Speaker 1: to be reborn to fight monsters, question marks. The laure
- 40:04Speaker 1: is a little hazy in parts. Maybe monsters aliens, not
- 40:08Speaker 1: really sure. I always liked, too, that the monsters would
- 40:11Speaker 1: were genuinely quite scary, very scary, and also extremely gay.
- 40:16Speaker 1: They were always really gay, very, very powerful, very like
- 40:20Speaker 1: vividly drawn, like the like. The weapons they carried were
- 40:24Speaker 1: always pretty intense, like silo moon is sort of like
- 40:27Speaker 1: fluffy and fun, but also the stakes were quite real,
- 40:30Speaker 1: you know, which I always liked. It always felt like
- 40:32Speaker 1: they defeated the monsters like faster than it actually took
- 40:36Speaker 1: them to transforms. Yeah, like half of the episode was
- 40:42Speaker 1: kind of teenage hijinks, then another of the episode was
- 40:46Speaker 1: them all transforming five percent with them defeating the villain,
- 40:49Speaker 1: and then was like Tuxedo mask being a pedophile. That
- 40:55Speaker 1: is the mathematical equation of every sailor moon episode. I
- 40:58Speaker 1: watched them. I like watching the pilot US night. I
- 41:00Speaker 1: was like, Oh, this is buffy. It is literally a buffy.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Are you a buffy? Yeah, well, I haven't seen the
- 41:07Speaker 1: whole thing. I think I've seen I think I stopped
- 41:10Speaker 1: halfway through season four, but I've seen the musical episode okay,
- 41:13Speaker 1: so like through Cultural Osmosis, yes, and then the chunks
- 41:15Speaker 1: about season four is really hard to get through. It
- 41:18Speaker 1: was rough, but the end of it is really good,
- 41:20Speaker 1: and then season five is great, season six is great. Four,
- 41:24Speaker 1: or is there too much missing? I mean you do
- 41:27Speaker 1: kind of need the context. But the thing with like
- 41:30Speaker 1: TV shows of that era is that the seasons have
- 41:33Speaker 1: so many episodes. Well, that, I think, was part of
- 41:36Speaker 1: the barrier for me. I was like, Oh God, every season. Yeah,
- 41:41Speaker 1: and they're all an hour long. But but I do
- 41:43Speaker 1: like that because it gives them the leeway to do
- 41:47Speaker 1: these like little weird one off episodes, stuff that's just
- 41:51Speaker 1: character stuff exactly, which, you know, like in the era
- 41:54Speaker 1: of like ten episode TV series, like you don't get
- 41:58Speaker 1: as much of ever. Ever, again, I didn't miss it.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I miss like a monster of the week or like
- 42:03Speaker 1: a bottle episode. I love a bottle episode. I lovesode two.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I camember the last time I watched like something contemporary.
- 42:10Speaker 1: That was like a bottle episode, like the last thing
- 42:12Speaker 1: I can think. I was like girls. You know, there
- 42:15Speaker 1: was a bottle episode in Dear White People that I
- 42:17Speaker 1: remember really liking. I didn't watch that, Um Sandman to
- 42:20Speaker 1: a bottle episode. Another reason for you to watch I
- 42:25Speaker 1: will watch it. I feel like sailor moon was like
- 42:27Speaker 1: the primordial like Heroin Bimbo, you know what I mean,
- 42:31Speaker 1: like came before buffy in the like I'm hot, but
- 42:35Speaker 1: I also can kick ass and like sometimes I'm a
- 42:38Speaker 1: little dizzy, but like don't underestimate me. is like kind
- 42:41Speaker 1: of the buffy sailor moon alignment question mark. Totally agree,
- 42:45Speaker 1: disagree with I mean that's the whole idea. There's a
- 42:47Speaker 1: real threat there, for sure. I'm trying to think of
- 42:50Speaker 1: other folks that like fit into that archetype. Wa. Yes, yeah, Um,
- 42:59Speaker 1: I guess like you see it more now, because that
- 43:02Speaker 1: is more of an archetype. Now. I wonder if the
- 43:05Speaker 1: power puff girls pilot would have done that. What I
- 43:08Speaker 1: would like to see it. How many would this is
- 43:10Speaker 1: like the fourth reboot and like the last like five years,
- 43:13Speaker 1: but this was the live action one. There's a live
- 43:15Speaker 1: action there was supposed to be pilot. Shot the pilot twice,
- 43:19Speaker 1: but I don't know. They like make cancel level pilots
- 43:23Speaker 1: look but I remember, I remember feeling I'm like just
- 43:25Speaker 1: really just shows a pilot. Yeah, I want to see
- 43:28Speaker 1: it because we saw all the Paparazzi photos of them
- 43:31Speaker 1: on wires and stuff. I haven't seen this at all. Yeah, Cameron,
- 43:35Speaker 1: Karen and then I I don't remember. I think she
- 43:40Speaker 1: was bubbles. Naturally, who else would be? Who was playing him?
- 43:45Speaker 1: Not Billy Porter. Tell us who was playing him? Darna.
- 43:50Speaker 1: They probably didn't get that far into it, so that
- 43:53Speaker 1: would be I have to play him. Which powerpuff girl
- 43:56Speaker 1: are you? Oh, which one is a green one? Buttercut
- 44:00Speaker 1: also mean mommy. I I feel that I am also
- 44:03Speaker 1: spiritually a buttercup. Buttercup, I'm blossom. Unfortunately. Why Sad? What's
- 44:09Speaker 1: because I'm always the one, the logistical one. I'm always
- 44:15Speaker 1: the one that's like you guys, let's get it together,
- 44:17Speaker 1: we have like these things to get done. I'm not.
- 44:22Speaker 1: You are kind of a bubble. I am kind of
- 44:24Speaker 1: so that's the thing. Is Like I am bubbles, I'm
- 44:29Speaker 1: an air had, I'm late to things, I'm constantly forgetting ship,
- 44:33Speaker 1: but for some reason people make me the blossom and
- 44:37Speaker 1: every friend. Where do you make yourself? Well, if no
- 44:40Speaker 1: one else is gonna like you, know buy you're going
- 44:43Speaker 1: to see. It's like it's self enforcing. Yeah, it's like okay,
- 44:47Speaker 1: I guess all research Airbnbs, you know what I mean.
- 44:49Speaker 1: But it's true that if you're in a group and
- 44:51Speaker 1: someone is really leaning into their their bubbles energy or
- 44:55Speaker 1: their buttercup energy, you do by defaults become on the calendar,
- 45:00Speaker 1: by silent decision making. Yeah, figure out the train times. Um,
- 45:05Speaker 1: pop off girls. I watched a little bit, but I
- 45:08Speaker 1: remember not attaching to it in the same way, I
- 45:10Speaker 1: think because I didn't love the animation style. Yeah, it's
- 45:14Speaker 1: very Hannah Barbara. Is that what that era of Cartoonoo do? Oh,
- 45:19Speaker 1: I mean just the era of cartoons, the cartoon cartoon
- 45:23Speaker 1: like cartoon networking, like like Um, Samurai Joe, Johnny, Smuri, Smuri,
- 45:32Speaker 1: Samurai Jack, Samurai and Johnny Bravo. Yes, and I've seen
- 45:36Speaker 1: a lot of Fan Art of Samurai Jack and Johnny
- 45:38Speaker 1: Bravo Kissing, kissing, not just you. I wanted. I wanted
- 45:45Speaker 1: the power off girls to have hands. I was like,
- 45:46Speaker 1: how are they holding? That is so disturbing. Cartoons don't
- 45:51Speaker 1: have hands. Yeah, Um, but yeah, the hard line of
- 45:55Speaker 1: the animation styles of area of the time and I
- 45:58Speaker 1: loved the animation style of sailor moon so much so
- 46:01Speaker 1: it was really beautiful. It's like being really young watching
- 46:04Speaker 1: it being like Oh, this like just fucking rules, this
- 46:06Speaker 1: is gorgeous. In the Pantheon of gender non specific kind
- 46:12Speaker 1: of protagonists are like very like envy protagonists, like all
- 46:15Speaker 1: of the studio Ghibli like heart throbs, are like Howell,
- 46:20Speaker 1: and it's not fine, right, and he has that whole
- 46:26Speaker 1: like a meltdown because he's not. He's like not beautiful.
- 46:28Speaker 1: He's like he dyes his hair, like his hair turns
- 46:31Speaker 1: the different colonies, like I'm not beautiful. I mean who
- 46:33Speaker 1: among us that egg scenario more times than I want to.
- 46:40Speaker 1: He's literally like I'm going to kill myself, and it's
- 46:44Speaker 1: like that is I've gotten out of the Salon Chair.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Like should I kill should kill myself, or do I
- 46:50Speaker 1: kill the stylists? Yeah, yeah, one or the other or both? Yeah,
- 46:55Speaker 1: why not? I mean how's so hot? WHO's so hot?
- 46:57Speaker 1: Princess Mononoke, so hot, I can't even talk about it.
- 47:00Speaker 1: And then, yeah, and then Ruka, Haruka, gender goals, sailor Urinus,
- 47:05Speaker 1: and also the food in Studio Ghibli movies. It just
- 47:09Speaker 1: looks so good. I had a similar thing with, like
- 47:12Speaker 1: with May Cup in animation when I was younger, like
- 47:15Speaker 1: like in Mulan when they put the Lipstick on, like
- 47:19Speaker 1: how people, how people's hair moved. That whole opening number
- 47:22Speaker 1: in Mulan is a Banger, stunning and those images that
- 47:28Speaker 1: I just remember really latching onto hair. Animated Hair is
- 47:32Speaker 1: very important and sailor moon does it so well. Yeah,
- 47:36Speaker 1: I mean, how long is her hair to be flowing
- 47:39Speaker 1: that long in those pigtails? She definitely has some mixed
- 47:42Speaker 1: intern work. Yeah, she's definitely got plugs. She's got a weave. Yeah,
- 47:48Speaker 1: I love long flowing animated hair. That was when I
- 47:50Speaker 1: used to draw it, when I was a little like
- 47:51Speaker 1: hair was like the big thing that I was really
- 47:53Speaker 1: obsessed with, and hair and animation is so specific, like
- 47:56Speaker 1: Um Arial's Weird Bang thing and the little made like
- 48:00Speaker 1: what is that? Yeah, like Um like Meg's really angular
- 48:03Speaker 1: hair and Hercules into it, the little swirls for Nipples,
- 48:08Speaker 1: the Nipswalls, the nips worlds into a very controversial elbow. Elbows.
- 48:15Speaker 1: What was that? They're just like it's Greek, I guess. Yeah,
- 48:19Speaker 1: their Corinthian column like kids will like we'll like learn
- 48:22Speaker 1: how to draw from stuff. This sing and like my
- 48:25Speaker 1: my older brother would like draw stuff that was like
- 48:27Speaker 1: very stylistically taken from Hercules. So it always reminds me
- 48:31Speaker 1: of him and I remember friends of mine like learning
- 48:33Speaker 1: how to draw from sailor moon, like filling up their
- 48:36Speaker 1: sketch books with with hair, you know, like figuring out
- 48:39Speaker 1: how to draw the skirts. I definitely used to draw.
- 48:43Speaker 1: I used to draw like anything I would watch, and
- 48:45Speaker 1: I just remembered, Um, so Mulan the first and one
- 48:50Speaker 1: of two times I'd ever really been to Disneyland, slash world.
- 48:54Speaker 1: What's the one in Florida? Disney world? Disney world as
- 48:57Speaker 1: a kid, I was like a little baby kid. Was Right.
- 49:00Speaker 1: War Mulan came out and you could go into this
- 49:03Speaker 1: like exhibit that had like original like sketches of the Mulan,
- 49:08Speaker 1: kind of like world. Can we talk about concept dot
- 49:10Speaker 1: like generally for a second? Studio Ghibli concert are like.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Do you have like a memory attachment to any sort
- 49:17Speaker 1: of specific concept art? I just remember, like any time
- 49:20Speaker 1: I fell in love with a movie, like either my
- 49:22Speaker 1: my parents would or like I would like try to
- 49:24Speaker 1: get ahold of whatever behind the scenes book was made
- 49:28Speaker 1: about it. I have the Lord of the Rings One, yes, yes, yes, yes,
- 49:32Speaker 1: like well, like Alan How's drawings? Like the books about
- 49:36Speaker 1: the Nannia movies? I have the titanic ones. Yeah, I
- 49:41Speaker 1: love a lite in the witch and the wardrobe. It's
- 49:44Speaker 1: so good. The Lord of the Rings One's those visual companions, though.
- 49:47Speaker 1: They should be studied because, like, they actually textually are
- 49:52Speaker 1: so rich and like they give you so many sketches
- 49:56Speaker 1: and so much world building that, like, so much of
- 49:59Speaker 1: it is lost on you because these movies are so
- 50:02Speaker 1: maximalist and little. The rings is so special. What I like,
- 50:06Speaker 1: the original trilogy are like that's some of my favorite
- 50:09Speaker 1: films and, like, get ready for this, I watched them
- 50:12Speaker 1: every I watched all three extended editions in Christmas, every
- 50:15Speaker 1: yet on New Year's Day, and I call that ringing
- 50:17Speaker 1: in the new yet in a group, or there's a
- 50:22Speaker 1: friend in Australia that I do it with if we're
- 50:24Speaker 1: in the same place, and if we're not, all do
- 50:25Speaker 1: it by myself. Okay, well, if you need someone to
- 50:28Speaker 1: watch with this year, I mean, let's go, because I also,
- 50:32Speaker 1: around the holidays, do the same thing, but I am
- 50:34Speaker 1: wont to do like Watch the whole series and then
- 50:37Speaker 1: just like started over again. It's beautiful, you know. Or
- 50:41Speaker 1: like I'll watch the two towers twice. I made with
- 50:44Speaker 1: so much care and like everyone involved cares like the
- 50:49Speaker 1: most amount possible and like the everybody has the resources,
- 50:52Speaker 1: they need, time, they need like everybody's invested that, I
- 50:56Speaker 1: mean beyond anything else, so that it's just such a
- 50:58Speaker 1: unique cinematic at easement, I think. And Yeah, but that's
- 51:03Speaker 1: the difference between the Hobbit and why it's infuriating. Is
- 51:05Speaker 1: like not the same level of Kara did not go
- 51:07Speaker 1: into it because of the way it was made and
- 51:09Speaker 1: like the like Gamba del Toro of it all, and
- 51:12Speaker 1: like Peter Jackson, talk about concept dot my God, if like,
- 51:17Speaker 1: can you imagine if we had gotten did you? Have
- 51:22Speaker 1: you heard the t about how the Amazon Prime, like
- 51:25Speaker 1: rings of power, reached out to Peter Jackson and then
- 51:27Speaker 1: ghost to him? I did read that. Tell me they
- 51:30Speaker 1: were so they apparently, when they first started pulling the
- 51:33Speaker 1: show together, they reached out to him and they were
- 51:35Speaker 1: like hey, we would love for you to be involved.
- 51:38Speaker 1: To what capacity, we don't know, and Peter Jackson was
- 51:41Speaker 1: like yes, which, like he doesn't say yes to things. Um,
- 51:45Speaker 1: so I was kind of shook, but he said yes
- 51:47Speaker 1: and then they fully ghosted him and he's like on
- 51:49Speaker 1: the record, like you know, talking to journalists, being like yeah,
- 51:52Speaker 1: and I never heard back from them. A get like
- 51:54Speaker 1: such a queen like I was like, yeah, we're good,
- 51:56Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, they like put on the ring
- 51:59Speaker 1: and we're like Jackson even is he doing anything the
- 52:02Speaker 1: Beatles documentary? Jackson is like a quiet, passionate documentarian. I
- 52:09Speaker 1: didn't know that. Nothing but respect for Peter Jackson, but
- 52:12Speaker 1: he could not pick a less interesting subject for me
- 52:16Speaker 1: to consume. I do not want to want you don't
- 52:17Speaker 1: want to watch the six our Beatles? Don't? You could
- 52:21Speaker 1: not pay me. I will skip to the Yoko sections
- 52:23Speaker 1: and then I'll be done. I think the sailor moon
- 52:27Speaker 1: theme song is better than any song the Beatles ever
- 52:29Speaker 1: wrote say that I think I definitely pretended to like
- 52:51Speaker 1: the Beatles as a kid, like you know. And also, okay, actually,
- 52:56Speaker 1: the trailer, not across the universe of the movie, but
- 52:59Speaker 1: the Ray across the I do love Jim Surgis is
- 53:05Speaker 1: in it. Yeah, because he is in Sandman. I've been
- 53:08Speaker 1: thinking about how cute he is. I wouldn't recommend watching
- 53:11Speaker 1: it sober, but I would say that it's like for
- 53:15Speaker 1: me like when that trailer came out. I remember it
- 53:19Speaker 1: was like, you know, in the era of you to
- 53:21Speaker 1: early eras of Youtube, where you become with an obsessed
- 53:23Speaker 1: with a video and you just have to watch it
- 53:25Speaker 1: like every single day for like weeks and weeks. And
- 53:27Speaker 1: I mean I've seen it, like I've probably seen the
- 53:29Speaker 1: entire movie through gifts on Tumbler. I'm mad for it
- 53:33Speaker 1: over there. That was the tumbler. I've seen Uncle Sam
- 53:36Speaker 1: leaning with the pointing things, but the movie, it's truly
- 53:44Speaker 1: truly a thing that happened very, very little rings Culture
- 53:50Speaker 1: Florence the machine. I think I had a Florence in
- 53:54Speaker 1: the machine tumbler for a minute. Didn't really write like
- 53:58Speaker 1: at the very because like a beginning of her career
- 54:02Speaker 1: was like kind of when Tumbler was at its peak.
- 54:05Speaker 1: I used to have a tumbler that just reposted images
- 54:10Speaker 1: of Solange and beyonce together and I called it keeping
- 54:12Speaker 1: up with the noses. That's amazing, thought Tumbler Dot Com,
- 54:17Speaker 1: but it never got popular anything, unfortunately. The first time
- 54:19Speaker 1: I ever heard of Florence in the machine song was
- 54:21Speaker 1: Um in a trailer for a new season of one
- 54:25Speaker 1: of my favorite shows at the time, which was a
- 54:27Speaker 1: BBC show called being human. Did either of you ever
- 54:30Speaker 1: say it? I think an American version of it was made,
- 54:33Speaker 1: but it's about a werewolf, a ghost and a vampire.
- 54:37Speaker 1: I do remember. I remember it already sounds like something
- 54:40Speaker 1: rose has watched. I haven't watched it, but I definitely
- 54:43Speaker 1: like remember. It was incredible and I if I remember correctly,
- 54:47Speaker 1: it was the trailer for the season two, I think.
- 54:49Speaker 1: But I was in love with this show and they
- 54:51Speaker 1: used Howel, like the Florence Song. Oh my God, it's
- 54:54Speaker 1: a great song. Yeah, the first time I ever saw
- 54:59Speaker 1: her live was like her first American show when she
- 55:02Speaker 1: was like breaking out. It was a terminal five in
- 55:05Speaker 1: New York. Was the first time I ever did acid
- 55:07Speaker 1: and she opened with how and I was like I
- 55:11Speaker 1: like left my body and like was communing with her
- 55:16Speaker 1: and like a fully spiritual way, and she was like
- 55:20Speaker 1: a vessel to some like greater power, and I was
- 55:23Speaker 1: like hunched over my computer with the trailer on Youtube
- 55:27Speaker 1: listening to it so I could type the lyrics into Google,
- 55:31Speaker 1: being like what, what is this song? Yeah, yeah, it was,
- 55:35Speaker 1: and I found it. I was like, who's flaring in
- 55:37Speaker 1: the machine? And then I bought her album like that week.
- 55:39Speaker 1: I think that album is so like, that album is
- 55:43Speaker 1: so like raw and like like so many different sounds
- 55:48Speaker 1: and her voices so like angry but also beautiful. I
- 55:52Speaker 1: probably watched the cosmic love music video like like upwards
- 55:57Speaker 1: of five hundred times the year that it came out. Yeah,
- 56:02Speaker 1: I would go for like walks by myself a lot
- 56:05Speaker 1: as a teenager. I would like go to this like
- 56:06Speaker 1: one public swing set or like explore my my neighborhood.
- 56:10Speaker 1: I lived right near like a national reserve and I
- 56:13Speaker 1: just remember like sitting in a park alone, like memorizing
- 56:16Speaker 1: the lyrics to my boy builds coffins. Just like she
- 56:19Speaker 1: understands me. I've seen her every era, and so now
- 56:22Speaker 1: I have to see this era, because I do think
- 56:25Speaker 1: that this album that she just released, dance faver, is
- 56:29Speaker 1: like one of my favorites in a while. I okay,
- 56:33Speaker 1: I want to know. What's your favorite Florence album? Oh
- 56:37Speaker 1: my God, okay, tough, but I think I think, like truly,
- 56:40Speaker 1: at the end of the day, it's it's how big,
- 56:41Speaker 1: how blue, how beautiful. It's her best it's her best album. Yeah,
- 56:47Speaker 1: it's my favorite. Queen of peace is like one of
- 56:49Speaker 1: my favorite Florence. What kind of man is a crazy opener?
- 56:53Speaker 1: Like it's it's incredible. It throws you right in the
- 56:55Speaker 1: deep end. And then various storms and science is one
- 56:57Speaker 1: of my favorite songs of hers. Well, it's like the
- 56:59Speaker 1: album where she started getting really into dance and like
- 57:03Speaker 1: and you can, I mean she's always been such a
- 57:05Speaker 1: like a mover, you know, especially like you see her
- 57:08Speaker 1: live performances and like it's all about this like frenetic
- 57:11Speaker 1: energy she has, but like you can kind of hear
- 57:15Speaker 1: this like interest she has and like theatrical performance coming
- 57:19Speaker 1: through in the music Um and like what kind of
- 57:23Speaker 1: man does? What kind of man is is very that
- 57:25Speaker 1: various storms and saints is so good, it's so beautiful
- 57:29Speaker 1: and that the music video of it. Is there a
- 57:32Speaker 1: music video of that? I don't know, because she did
- 57:35Speaker 1: she did a bunch of videos for that album that
- 57:38Speaker 1: we're like connected, and I think there was like a
- 57:42Speaker 1: various storms and saints moments. Um highest hope is probably
- 57:47Speaker 1: my best. It's it's so different. It is so different.
- 57:50Speaker 1: It's still really good and I saw when she was
- 57:53Speaker 1: touring she did a performance of it at Bam, which
- 57:56Speaker 1: was like the right context to see it in and
- 57:58Speaker 1: it made me like it a lot more. So intimate,
- 58:01Speaker 1: but it's it is very different from all of her
- 58:05Speaker 1: other work. I was really always a ceremonials girl. Oh yeah,
- 58:09Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, that was a transportive album that came
- 58:13Speaker 1: out when I was living in Bushwick, like near one
- 58:16Speaker 1: of the huge cemeteries there, and I would like go
- 58:18Speaker 1: on walks in the cemetery listening to ceremonials, and so
- 58:21Speaker 1: that was very the vibe of that. Her music feels
- 58:25Speaker 1: like like motion, like movement. It's like I remember like
- 58:28Speaker 1: making a stupid tweet about it, like I just ago,
- 58:30Speaker 1: but her music makes me feel like I can control
- 58:32Speaker 1: the weather. YEA, she is. Yes, she is, is, she's
- 58:41Speaker 1: a witch, she's like a fairy, she's a demon, she's
- 58:45Speaker 1: all of those things and I think that, like when
- 58:48Speaker 1: she came onto the scene, which is when I fell
- 58:51Speaker 1: in love with her, I feel like her. I think
- 58:54Speaker 1: tumbler culture had created a perfect like landscape for her
- 58:58Speaker 1: to come into because like self, serious, like Kate Bushey,
- 59:02Speaker 1: in weather, weather controller, is like very like. I don't know.
- 59:07Speaker 1: There are a lot of people that I think are
- 59:10Speaker 1: that are in that legacy of like you know what
- 59:13Speaker 1: she did first. Like there was nothing like her when
- 59:15Speaker 1: she came onto the scene. Like there is a power
- 59:17Speaker 1: within me. I think the way had kind of been
- 59:19Speaker 1: cleared for her a little bit with like amy winehouse
- 59:23Speaker 1: Duffy Adele of like the sort of alternative British singer
- 59:29Speaker 1: Songwriters who made like very emotive music, but she kind
- 59:35Speaker 1: of brought the like big booming pop into it and
- 59:38Speaker 1: like chamber pop was certainly not something we were like
- 59:42Speaker 1: listening to in two thousand nine. I also don't know
- 59:44Speaker 1: like what other what other music sounded like with like
- 59:48Speaker 1: the nothing, I mean particularly at the time, like you know,
- 59:53Speaker 1: in in like the years before her first album releases,
- 59:56Speaker 1: like it's like two thousand and six, seven eight, and
- 59:59Speaker 1: I can't think of one like her at the time. Yeah,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: and she also will, because I think the first song
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: of hers that really broke out was kiss with a fist.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: So it was almost like it was yeah, it was
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: kind of like sneaky in a way, because you kind
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: of got one thing for her. She was very you know,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: she kind of like snuck in at like the tail
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: end of like Kate Nash, Kate Nash a little bit,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: a little bit Lily Allen. Yeah, like the kiss with
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: a fist tone is like the ven diagram overlap. I
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: think totally. My God, Kate Nash, my finger tips holding
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: onto the foundation. Kate Nash and Lily Allen. We're both
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: on the very first mix CD that my very first
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: boyfriend made for me. So okay, but that, honestly, that
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: what even is that era of like indie pop, like
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: I miss. There's something. It's coming back because, you know,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: Indie slee is is like the thing that it's like
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: sort of like low fi, like snarky. I don't know,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: there's something quite earnest about it, but I think maybe
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: people are missing. But like we just don't have bands
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: like Edward Sharp and the magnetic Zeros anymore. You know
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: what I mean? Like like it's probably a devenge er
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: ban Har Um like kind of throaty acoustic set list
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: and they're like seventeen members of the band and you
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: don't know what the other like fifteen do you know?
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Like that, I wouldn't be done to like go to
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: like a Gig, you know, like a dirty, grungy like
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: rock show. Actually, this is something that I was thinking
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: about when I went to see Chromatica ball because, I mean,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not trying to poop poo on like,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: you know, kindness punks or whatever, but I am Gaga
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: fans are, I mean, sorry, very white, like it's it's
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: a deeply Caucasian crowd, and they were also just very
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: like we, and I said, I'll say, I'll say we
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: we are all like kind of losers and therefore like
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: don't really know like how to vibe and how to
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: be cool and a concert environment. And when we went
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: to when I went to gramatical ball, I was like,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: why is anyone dancing, like, why is anyone Moh Ing?
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: And Gaga, during her shows, frequently says stuff like dance,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: motherfucker dances and likes yeah, and it's crazy because I
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: used to go. I don't go to concerts that much anymore,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: but I used to go to like two concerts a month.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Like I would find like fifteen twenty dollar tickets and
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: go see you, know Ingrad Michaelson or like, Um, do
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: you remember? Uh Fuck, is really a show where you're
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: going to rage out girl, or like Laura Marling or
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: something like that. But I have another classic Mash Opportunity. Laura,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Laura Music, Laura Marley used to be my number one but,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: like I would go to concerts alone all the time
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: and like I'm thinking about like when I saw sleigh
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: bells live and like, Oh my God, I incredible show.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: And that's the thing. is like because, Um, we all
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: want to be respectful and not endanger each other's lives.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: We don't like mash anymore, but I kind of like
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: miss like, because you can't go to a slave ill
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: show and not mash I. I once saw them at
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: the basement at Le Poissan Rouge and it was like
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: it was I thought I was going to die that night,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: as I also did a lot of cocaine that night.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: So that's partially what I say. I have gotten into
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: multiple emotional altercations with people at concert really yes I
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: got in a fight with a girl at a Carly
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Rag Jefson concert at Terminal Five, I, one of the
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: most heated places. This girl was so rude, she was
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: constantly I mean, I'm, you know, universally hated at any
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: concert because I'm sick, six ft two and so like
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: everyone just hates me, and like this girl was constantly
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: physically pushing my back, like trying to like push me
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: away from her and I'm like, I'm not an invasive answer.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: I'm a very small dancer, like I'm very cognizant of
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: the space I take up. But she was like really
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: wasted and um I got into a fight with her
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: at some point. I was just like just go in
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: front of me, I don't care. Just like literally go
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: in front of me. I just don't want to interact
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: with you anymore. I also got in a fight with
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: a woman at a Michelle Branch concert during next and
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: they're gonna get get into a fight with someone at
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: the worst part is it is it wasn't o g
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Michelle Branch. It was like her not her most recent
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: I guess her most recent album, was a very small show,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: maybe at Lepos San Rouge, I want to say, but
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: like there was some woman who was audibly complaining about me,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: like behind me, and she was like, Oh, I can't see,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: oh no, I can't see or whatever, and I like
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: turned around and I was like I would love to
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: like cut off my shins for you, but like, unfortunately,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: like I can't, like I'm just tall. So like you
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: could move if you wanted to. Your welcome to go
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: in front of me, and she was like, Oh, well,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: crowds make me nervous, so that's why I'm in the back.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: And I was like, well, you live in New York,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: and I was just like so. And then's so funny
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: that like fear of having to say the polite thing
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: as you say the rude thing. It's like how, okay,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: so your nervousness around tapping me on the shoulder and
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: saying hey, would I actually be able to go in
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: front of you, means that instead you're just going to
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: be passive, aggressive loudly like now, is that better? Let's
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: let's not never forget that sailor moon is fourteen. Yeah,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: she's young, and that's crazy too. I mean I think
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: it's like it's a phenomenon. was like every piece of
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: children on teenagers media, right or it's like when you're
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: a kid, you're like yeah, that's a person, that's an adult,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: that's that's fine, and now when I look at teenagers,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: I'm like, you're not a person, you have you do
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: not have independent thought, like nothing you think or say matters.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: And then there's the cognitive dissonance of like well, I
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: didn't look that young. It's like yes, you did, yes,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: you did. That is kind of crazy, even though I
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: guess like there are a lot of movies these days
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: where like high school or start being played by like
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: full thirty seven year old. That doesn't help. Well, I
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: like this this like new kind of end that's emerging
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: where they're actually casting teenagers as that. That okay. When
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: I think about that, I think about the movie eighth grade,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: which it ruined me, like it knocked me, failed me
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: at the knees. But Um Elsie fishing in that movie
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: is like yeah, no, that's that's that's a child, that's
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: a fourteen year old, and that is how vulnerable fourteen
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: year old is and how vulnerable it feels. And the
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: fourteen year old like youtube videos like in that like
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: the kind of class of youtube videos. Like I was
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: watching like some sort of like interview about like Bo
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: Burnham's process of like making that movie, and he was
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: like I watched hundreds of hours of like preteen youtuber
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: like vlogs like to like understand like and it's crazy, though,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: that this is like that. This is what the generation
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: is doing now, like are they're cataloging their thoughts like
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: for all of the public, and they are not going
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: to want those to exist. But that's what I wonder
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: about because I mean, like my experience of the Internet
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: as a young person was a of writing stuff down
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: live journal a little bit. I Live Journal still exists
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: somewhere and I need it shut I need the nuclear codes. But, like,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I mean, I think, I do think it is different
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: to have your legal name and your face attached it
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: to everything you're putting out. You know, I wonder what, Um,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: what that's going to feel and look like later. Yeah,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: I mean, you know, not everyone gets to fully transform
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: into a superhero and like change their identity. Lucky for me,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: I only used my live journal to steal music and
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: I honestly recently revisited it and, Um, it was I
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: only have one post and it's it's like a text
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: only post. That's like, does anybody have a good MP
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: three or MP four of a LEJANDRO? My Lady Gaga,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I could have, I could have helped you out. The
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: Gut reaction I had to that concern. I'm like, no,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: it does anyone. I remember the fucking youtube to MP
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: three CONVADAH. My Live Journal was mostly we really used
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: it as a way to bully each other. So it
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: was like you would say the meanest, nastiest Shit about
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: each other in your live journal and like no, like
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: change of names, nothing. But then you didn't talk about
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: it at school. At School you acted like everything was
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: totally fine and normal, and then you would go home
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: again that night and be like, I hope she kills herself.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, me and cyber bullying. Yeah, I was
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: a cyber bullier in the high school, but I was
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: also cyber bullied. So you know, people, I mean, they
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: I mean, they do. It is annoying, but that is true.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: We'll be back next week with a discussion on Greek mythology.
