- 0:00Speaker 1: We've made so many mistakes, but we just kept moving
- 0:02Speaker 1: and if like something wasn't working, then we just tried
- 0:04Speaker 1: a different approach to it, and eventually like tried something else,
- 0:06Speaker 1: it didn't work, and tried something else.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Then if that work, we kept going.
- 0:10Speaker 1: And I think that's one of the things with anybody
- 0:12Speaker 1: where it's starting a podcast, the business, their own whatever,
- 0:15Speaker 1: is just like just keep moving because it's so easy
- 0:17Speaker 1: to get stuck by not being totally certain on like
- 0:20Speaker 1: the approach and strategy that you need to take.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Hey, Hurdlers, Emily Abody here, Welcome back to episode ninety
- 0:40Speaker 3: six of Hurdle, a wellness focused podcast where I sit
- 0:44Speaker 3: down with inspiring individuals to talk about everything from their
- 0:47Speaker 3: big wins to how they've gotten through some of life's
- 0:49Speaker 3: toughest moments. On the show, you can expect vulnerability, motivation,
- 0:55Speaker 3: and candid discussions with everyone from top athletes to aspiring
- 0:59Speaker 3: entrepreneurs on what it really takes to follow your passions.
- 1:03Speaker 3: My mission is simple to inspire you to be your
- 1:06Speaker 3: best self, move with intention, and have some fun along
- 1:10Speaker 3: the way. On today's episode, I am chatting with Matt
- 1:14Speaker 3: Lombardi and Kevin Ran, the co founders of Beam, a
- 1:18Speaker 3: company that makes CBD products for wellness, rest, and athletic recovery.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Now complete transparency as you will always get from me.
- 1:28Speaker 3: This was recorded near the end of last year, and
- 1:30Speaker 3: it was after this conversation with the guys that we
- 1:33Speaker 3: realized just how exactly aligned we are in our values.
- 1:37Speaker 3: As a result, Beam signed on to sponsor some of
- 1:40Speaker 3: the episodes on the pod, which is why the brand
- 1:43Speaker 3: might sound familiar. Also, after this episode was recorded, that's
- 1:47Speaker 3: when I myself really dove in head first to their
- 1:50Speaker 3: product portfolio, which ranges from a selve that I obsess
- 1:55Speaker 3: over for sore muscles especially after Saturday long runs, to
- 1:59Speaker 3: a tincture and what they call Beam blends. After you
- 2:03Speaker 3: listen today, if you are interested in grabbing some of yourself,
- 2:06Speaker 3: they are offering you, guys a really sweet deal. It's
- 2:09Speaker 3: fifteen percent off your purchase at beamtlc dot com using
- 2:14Speaker 3: the code Hurdle at checkout. Again, that's BEAMTLC dot com.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Use hurdle at checkout and grab yourself some today. Now,
- 2:22Speaker 3: for those of you who feel like you just don't
- 2:24Speaker 3: understand CBD at all, this episode is for you. It
- 2:28Speaker 3: will help you navigate that the guys really lead it
- 2:30Speaker 3: out for me in a way that was so necessary.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Both of the guys' former pro athletes, Matt and Kevin,
- 2:37Speaker 3: they have similar stories about unexpectedly departing from their sports,
- 2:41Speaker 3: Matt with hockey and Kevin as a pitcher for the
- 2:43Speaker 3: White Sox, and we talked through the hard times that
- 2:45Speaker 3: followed that, both of them feeling a little bit lost.
- 2:48Speaker 3: We also talk about how the once college acquaintances became
- 2:52Speaker 3: best friends and ultimately business partners. These guys are funny
- 2:56Speaker 3: and their enthusiasm is so contagious, and we had really
- 3:00Speaker 3: great time together with this episode and I think y'all
- 3:02Speaker 3: will absolutely love it. Now, before we get to it,
- 3:06Speaker 3: a quick word of thanks to my sponsors. First up,
- 3:09Speaker 3: beat Elite from Human. I am an active person, as
- 3:13Speaker 3: you know, and I'm training now for the London Marathon,
- 3:16Speaker 3: which means that my long runs are really getting up
- 3:19Speaker 3: there with about nine weeks.
- 3:21Speaker 2: To go until race day.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I am always looking for something that gives me a
- 3:24Speaker 3: natural edge so I can be better, and that's why
- 3:27Speaker 3: I recently started taking beat Elite. I mix the beatroot
- 3:30Speaker 3: powder with water and drink it right down about thirty
- 3:33Speaker 3: minutes or so before heading out. And what I've noticed
- 3:35Speaker 3: by integrating beat Elite into my routine is that I
- 3:38Speaker 3: just have more in my legs when I get to
- 3:40Speaker 3: those later miles. That's because the product helps to activate
- 3:43Speaker 3: essential nitric oxide in the body, which means that more
- 3:46Speaker 3: oxygen is getting into the muscles. That helps to extend
- 3:50Speaker 3: exercise endurance and improve energy and stamina. So do I
- 3:55Speaker 3: take your game to the next level with beat Elite

- 4:00Speaker 3: twenty percent off.

- 5:58Speaker 3: One last bit of housekeeping, I have a few live

- 6:38Speaker 3: has shaped us into who we are today.
- 6:41Speaker 4: I believe.
- 6:42Speaker 3: My discussion is at twelve pm at the New York
- 6:45Speaker 3: road Runners Run Center featuring the New Balance Run Hub.
- 6:48Speaker 3: For more details everything you need to know, click on
- 6:50Speaker 3: over to the show notes and I hope to see there.
- 6:53Speaker 3: With that, let's get to hurdling.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Today.
- 7:04Speaker 4: I'm sitting down with the co founders of Beam. I've
- 7:06Speaker 4: got Matt Lombardi and Kevin Moran. Hey, guys, Hey, hello.
- 7:10Speaker 4: It's it's pretty rare that I sit down with two
- 7:13Speaker 4: people at once.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Okay, excited, It makes me.
- 7:18Speaker 4: It makes me a little nervous because I feel like
- 7:19Speaker 4: there's like a lot of territory to get through. But
- 7:22Speaker 4: I'm really excited to be here with you guys. Before
- 7:24Speaker 4: we really roll into it and hear a bit about
- 7:27Speaker 4: your backstory, why don't we start off learning a little
- 7:29Speaker 4: bit about what Beam is.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Sure at the highest level, being is a CBD wellness company,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and we really have built and created Beam with the
- 7:39Speaker 1: idea that we want to serve people's lifestyles and a
- 7:42Speaker 1: lot of different facets. The more people we talk to,
- 7:44Speaker 1: the more we understand everybody has different pain points. Our
- 7:46Speaker 1: mission is to help people experience what better feels like,
- 7:49Speaker 1: love it?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:50Speaker 5: The cool thing with that is to better You know,
- 7:52Speaker 5: Matt and I as backgrounds and athletics is one thing
- 7:54Speaker 5: where we're very fortunate to have a good network with
- 7:57Speaker 5: an athletics and meet with baseball and Matt in hockey.
- 7:59Speaker 5: But the cool thing about being in CBD in general
- 8:02Speaker 5: is it's not just athletes that it's helping.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But that's been an interesting market for us to go after.
- 8:06Speaker 5: But it's like Matt's mother, my mother, you know, put
- 8:09Speaker 5: throughout the whitis in their hands or whatever it is.
- 8:11Speaker 5: They're better is picking up their granddaughters. And for us,
- 8:13Speaker 5: it's like recovering after a hard cross that workout. So
- 8:15Speaker 5: it's a really unique opportunity to be in a market
- 8:17Speaker 5: where you can do things like help all different types
- 8:20Speaker 5: of people across the across the spectrum.
- 8:22Speaker 4: And I think, and I'm sure you guys get this
- 8:24Speaker 4: all the time, there's probably a lot of hesitation with
- 8:28Speaker 4: your product from people that don't know anything about CBD.
- 8:32Speaker 4: So why don't we just kind of crack into that
- 8:34Speaker 4: all bite briefly, Like talk to me about just CBD
- 8:37Speaker 4: in general.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Yeah, So I'm probably world this is Kevin Wild's biggest skeptic.
- 8:41Speaker 5: So the fact that Matt and I are in the
- 8:43Speaker 5: cannabis business and then at CBD business in general is
- 8:46Speaker 5: just like laughable with most of our.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Family and friends.
- 8:48Speaker 5: So most not all CBD is created equal it's a
- 8:51Speaker 5: very gray market. It's really complex and consumers should do
- 8:55Speaker 5: the research before they actually look and decide to choose
- 8:57Speaker 5: a brand. There's swee different types out there which I
- 9:00Speaker 5: won't get into now, some better than others. CBD isolate,
- 9:03Speaker 5: broad spectrum, full spectrum, and it's really just important to
- 9:06Speaker 5: find a brand that you trust, that's organically growing, that
- 9:09Speaker 5: tests solve their products, not just for THHC, but for leads,
- 9:13Speaker 5: heavy metals, pesticides, the amount of cebe's in the bottle.
- 9:16Speaker 5: So we built a brand, and what's been one of
- 9:18Speaker 5: our core values is building something that's honest, transparent and
- 9:23Speaker 5: kind of proving that putting our money where our mouth is,
- 9:25Speaker 5: so to speak, with the testing that we do behind
- 9:26Speaker 5: the scenes, and kind of representing that.
- 9:28Speaker 2: To the world.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Got it. I'll be honest. I probably get pitched nine
- 9:32Speaker 4: to twelve different random things with CBD in it a day.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Am I inbox like, especially as a journalist, people, there's
- 9:39Speaker 4: just so many new products. There's so much on the market,
- 9:41Speaker 4: and it's really hard to weep through and understand what
- 9:44Speaker 4: it is that you're looking at.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It's interesting, there's just so many stigmas around it because
- 9:48Speaker 1: it is cannabis. All of our things are derived from
- 9:50Speaker 1: hemp bo. We're a cannabis company technically, bur almost trying
- 9:53Speaker 1: not to be a cannabis company in a way, just
- 9:54Speaker 1: because there's so many stimwaves around that around it makes
- 9:57Speaker 1: you sleepy, it gets you high, all these different things. Really,
- 10:00Speaker 1: what we're trying to do is educate people on how
- 10:02Speaker 1: CBD works in the body end of cannabinite system. We
- 10:05Speaker 1: can touch on that quickly, but there's a lot in there.
- 10:09Speaker 1: There's a lot of benefits. Again, if you can educate
- 10:12Speaker 1: and humanize it and break it down, there's a lot
- 10:14Speaker 1: of really cool stuff. And I think we're we're just
- 10:16Speaker 1: really scratching the surface if I had to say, really
- 10:20Speaker 1: emerging as this active lifestyle wellness company in this category.
- 10:23Speaker 2: And I would say just from an overall market perspective too, it's.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Such we're so early, you know, Matt and I and
- 10:29Speaker 5: the team, we get so stuck in what we're doing
- 10:31Speaker 5: on a day to day basis, but the average consumer
- 10:33Speaker 5: doesn't really know what CBD is quite yet. So there's
- 10:35Speaker 5: going to be this opportunity for the brands that are
- 10:38Speaker 5: educating and doing things the right way to kind of
- 10:40Speaker 5: rise above a lot of the noise. Over the next
- 10:42Speaker 5: two to five years or so, there's going to be some,
- 10:45Speaker 5: i'd say, some bigger players on the CBD brand side
- 10:48Speaker 5: that become bigger players in the market. Has been a
- 10:50Speaker 5: lot of these smaller players who aren't really doing things
- 10:52Speaker 5: quite right are going to get pushed off to the side.
- 10:55Speaker 4: What I want to know though, let's throw it back.
- 10:56Speaker 4: So where are the both of you from. Originally we're
- 10:59Speaker 4: sitting in Boston right now. We're both from the Boston area.
- 11:02Speaker 5: I'm from Cape Cod, which is about an hour and
- 11:03Speaker 5: a half south, and that's from the suburbs of Boston.
- 11:06Speaker 4: We're in Cape Cod. I really hope you were going
- 11:08Speaker 4: to say something like Sandwich.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Now, that's right next door. My parents actually have a
- 11:12Speaker 2: house here now.
- 11:12Speaker 4: So grew up in the Boston area. And then you
- 11:15Speaker 4: guys met in college right at Boston College, and you
- 11:19Speaker 4: were both athletes in college. So talk to me about
- 11:22Speaker 4: what that was like. What was it like to try
- 11:24Speaker 4: to balance like being a college athlete and having any
- 11:27Speaker 4: sort of normal life.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's busy. So Kevin played baseball, I played hockey,
- 11:34Speaker 1: and it was fun. Kevin's year behind me but we
- 11:37Speaker 1: had a few classes together in the business school and
- 11:39Speaker 1: a couple a couple of funny projects where we didn't
- 11:42Speaker 1: do too much work but managed to get by.
- 11:45Speaker 2: That's a nice way to say.
- 11:46Speaker 1: But interestingly too. One of Kevin's best friends and teammates,
- 11:49Speaker 1: John was one of our roommates and someone I grew
- 11:51Speaker 1: up playing hockey with him. We're younger, and he was
- 11:54Speaker 1: kind of post school the glue that kept Kevin in
- 11:57Speaker 1: our circle.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Yeah, we weren't super close and we were friends, were
- 12:00Speaker 5: more of acquaintances than good friends. And my time at
- 12:03Speaker 5: BC two like those were the years. When I look back,
- 12:06Speaker 5: those are the years like where I learned discipline and
- 12:08Speaker 5: like what it takes to actually be to get to
- 12:10Speaker 5: where you need to be.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Yeah, at the time, what do you both think you're
- 12:13Speaker 4: going to do after college? Is the goal always to
- 12:16Speaker 4: play sports post college?
- 12:18Speaker 2: That's school? Yeah? Yeah at school? Yeah, for me, it
- 12:20Speaker 2: definitely was.
- 12:21Speaker 5: I had like a we don't have to get into
- 12:22Speaker 5: it now, but I wasn't really a big high school
- 12:24Speaker 5: prospect at all.
- 12:24Speaker 4: If we don't get into it now, when are you
- 12:26Speaker 4: gonna get in?
- 12:26Speaker 5: So I grew up, I said on Cape cop which
- 12:28Speaker 5: isn't necessarily really a hotbed for baseball.
- 12:31Speaker 4: I thought it was like the summer pitch for.
- 12:35Speaker 5: College baseball, the high school baseball scene, with love and
- 12:37Speaker 5: respect to he isn't really the best baseball scene. So
- 12:42Speaker 5: I had no idea that I was actually even really
- 12:44Speaker 5: a good baseball player. And my coach in high school,
- 12:46Speaker 5: very long story short, was like, hey, you should go
- 12:48Speaker 5: to this the showcase, and.
- 12:50Speaker 2: It was like five hundred bucks or something to go.
- 12:52Speaker 5: I thought that was a waste of money and I
- 12:53Speaker 5: probably shouldn't go do this, and my parents like just asking,
- 12:57Speaker 5: maybe maybe you just go, and ended up getting in
- 12:59Speaker 5: for free, and I pitched for two innings there happened
- 13:02Speaker 5: to be like thirty major League Baseball scouts there and
- 13:05Speaker 5: a bunch of college scouts there. I struck out all
- 13:08Speaker 5: six guys that I faced. I had no idea if
- 13:10Speaker 5: I threw like seventy miles an hour or a ninety,
- 13:13Speaker 5: and I think that was one of my first times
- 13:15Speaker 5: ever on a radar gun, and I was maybe like
- 13:16Speaker 5: eighty eight to ninety miles an hour, which for.
- 13:18Speaker 2: A seventeen year old's pretty good.
- 13:20Speaker 5: And I got back in the car after that and
- 13:22Speaker 5: I was like I struck out everybody. I did pretty well,
- 13:25Speaker 5: and I remember my cell phone, and this was probably
- 13:28Speaker 5: in the early days of cell phones. I had like
- 13:30Speaker 5: thirty voicemails from different colleges and pro scouts. So it
- 13:33Speaker 5: happened very serendipitously for me, and I ended up over
- 13:36Speaker 5: the course of like two weeks just being I guess,
- 13:39Speaker 5: for lack of a better road, just kind of an
- 13:40Speaker 5: average high school student to having multiple Division one offers
- 13:45Speaker 5: to play baseball in college.
- 13:47Speaker 2: So it kind of happened. It was. It just kind
- 13:51Speaker 2: of hit me out of left field, no pun intended.
- 13:53Speaker 5: And same thing at BC for me too when I
- 13:55Speaker 5: got there, I professional baseball wasn't really on the radar
- 13:58Speaker 5: for me, and things just kind of I kept working
- 14:00Speaker 5: hard and things kept happening in my favor, and all
- 14:02Speaker 5: of a sudden we were there.
- 14:04Speaker 4: What did you want to do originally after college? Like
- 14:07Speaker 4: what did you grow up saying like this is what
- 14:08Speaker 4: I'm going to do.
- 14:09Speaker 5: I always love to travel, so I was interested in
- 14:12Speaker 5: some type of international business. I wasn't sure what it
- 14:14Speaker 5: was going to be, but that's why I ended up
- 14:16Speaker 5: going into the business school at BC. I didn't foresee
- 14:19Speaker 5: myself having a CBD company.
- 14:22Speaker 4: I love it. And before and I just need to
- 14:24Speaker 4: tap on this. You asked our families if we were
- 14:26Speaker 4: going to start a CBD company, they would have been like, hell, no,
- 14:29Speaker 4: is that because like, were you both like really straight
- 14:31Speaker 4: edge growing up? And they think, like, CBD is straight
- 14:34Speaker 4: as edge? What do you mean by that?
- 14:37Speaker 1: I've never used anything THC And and so it's just like, oh,
- 14:40Speaker 1: he's starting a cannabis company.
- 14:42Speaker 5: Interesting, But that speaks to the stigma though in the market.
- 14:45Speaker 5: It's also the opportunity.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Right, yeah, totally. And then for you, like what did
- 14:50Speaker 4: you want to do after college?
- 14:52Speaker 1: So when I grew up playing hockey or on Boston,
- 14:54Speaker 1: like you look at Harvard, BUBC, Northeastern. So growing up,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I was just like, my biggest goal ever to go
- 15:00Speaker 1: play hockey at BC, going in the bean Pot Games,
- 15:02Speaker 1: which is a big tournament in Boston for the schools.
- 15:04Speaker 1: And I was fortunate to realize that I was. I
- 15:07Speaker 1: didn't get offered a scholarship and I went to b C.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I think they just knew how badly I wanted to
- 15:11Speaker 1: go there. We don't need to give this guy, but
- 15:15Speaker 1: they know I got my foot in the door. And
- 15:18Speaker 1: when I earned a scholarship my last year playing there,
- 15:20Speaker 1: and when I got there, my biggest goal is to
- 15:23Speaker 1: get to BC. Then I got there and I started
- 15:24Speaker 1: to learn a bit more like how the pros worked
- 15:26Speaker 1: the minors and seeing how like the seniors when they graduated,
- 15:29Speaker 1: what they ended up doing things like that, and so
- 15:31Speaker 1: then my mind started to turn. Like after BC, so
- 15:34Speaker 1: I'd say I kind of had blinders onto just hockey,
- 15:36Speaker 1: and so when hockey ended, I had zero idea or
- 15:38Speaker 1: put any thought into anything else that I could do
- 15:41Speaker 1: besides hockey.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Right, Okay, so you both graduate college and then move
- 15:46Speaker 4: forward into playing professionally.
- 15:49Speaker 5: I didn't even graduate, so I did have graduated since
- 15:52Speaker 5: so I left school.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I made the decision to leave school early.
- 15:54Speaker 5: When I was a junior, I got drafted by the
- 15:56Speaker 5: White Sox and left, blew out my elbow and ended
- 15:59Speaker 5: up going back to Well because I.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Couldn't play for a year and finish them.
- 16:03Speaker 4: So blew out your elbow?
- 16:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I had Tommy Jones won agree.
- 16:06Speaker 4: How was that that was?
- 16:08Speaker 5: Yeah? That was tough, But I always there's the silver
- 16:11Speaker 5: lining is so I probably wouldn't have gone back to
- 16:13Speaker 5: school for at least I always knew I wanted to
- 16:15Speaker 5: go back and graduate, but I probably wouldn't have gone
- 16:17Speaker 5: back for really three to five years. When I did
- 16:22Speaker 5: go back, the White Sox were nice enough to let
- 16:25Speaker 5: me rehab with the Red Sox and finish finished school.
- 16:27Speaker 5: At PC, I met my girlfriend and both now wife.
- 16:31Speaker 2: So if that was my.
- 16:32Speaker 5: First injury, which I then blew out my knee, then
- 16:35Speaker 5: I tored my rotator cuff and my labor on my shoulders,
- 16:37Speaker 5: so it was the first.
- 16:38Speaker 2: It was kind of the beginning of the end.
- 16:40Speaker 5: But I wouldn't have really met my wife and that
- 16:42Speaker 5: didn't happen, so it all worked out.
- 16:44Speaker 2: For the best.
- 16:44Speaker 4: I know. I feel like that's kind of in the
- 16:46Speaker 4: same vein, and it's like how we think about failure, right,
- 16:49Speaker 4: It's like everything is so awful and the world is ending,
- 16:52Speaker 4: But really what happens in those moments is like you
- 16:54Speaker 4: get the opportunity to learn something else for sure, and
- 16:57Speaker 4: that's like a really beautiful chance.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Right, absolutely, So.
- 17:01Speaker 4: You went back to the White Sox.
- 17:04Speaker 5: I went back, so I rehab my elbow and then
- 17:07Speaker 5: I was about so Tommy John is about an eighteen
- 17:09Speaker 5: month recovery.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I was about a year.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Into that and I blew out my left knee in
- 17:14Speaker 5: a freak accident and I had my knee done.
- 17:17Speaker 4: What's the freak accident.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I was at the gym and I was doing a
- 17:20Speaker 2: just like a step up, which is a pretty basic movement,
- 17:22Speaker 2: as you probably know, and my needest was like just
- 17:25Speaker 2: made this discussing noise and long story, I blew out
- 17:27Speaker 2: both sides of both of my meniscus at once, on
- 17:30Speaker 2: both sides of my knee, which was a very odd injury.
- 17:33Speaker 5: So I had that done and then I spent a year,
- 17:35Speaker 5: about a year and a half with the White Sox
- 17:37Speaker 5: on and off in Phoenix. Finally got healthy and then
- 17:39Speaker 5: I was playing for about a year and then I
- 17:41Speaker 5: told my rotator cuff in labroom and my shoulder. I
- 17:45Speaker 5: remember being in a game and I threw a pitch
- 17:47Speaker 5: like halfway to home plate and the catcher came out
- 17:50Speaker 5: He's like, dude, what what was that? That one like
- 17:51Speaker 5: thirty feet and I was like, that's the last pitch
- 17:54Speaker 5: I'm ever gonna throw. I remember I had an MRI
- 17:57Speaker 5: a couple days later, and I had an acute on
- 17:59Speaker 5: chronic add a torn rotator cuff and labroom that were
- 18:02Speaker 5: both like chronically torn and then even worse in that moment.
- 18:05Speaker 5: So something was telling me that there was probably time
- 18:07Speaker 5: to do something else. And I had gone back and
- 18:08Speaker 5: graduated and that was it.
- 18:11Speaker 4: That was And then I mean, you have kind of
- 18:13Speaker 4: a similar story, but just with a hockey.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Stick pretty much.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I put my first year is in the Devil's organization,
- 18:20Speaker 1: the Miners, and then my second year, my last year
- 18:22Speaker 1: is with the Penguins, and kind of similar to Kevin,
- 18:25Speaker 1: was about halfway through the season, I was playing, things
- 18:28Speaker 1: are going really well, and I got absolutely rocked. Some
- 18:31Speaker 1: guy as I turned one way, came in and threw
- 18:33Speaker 1: his elbbow in my face. And I remember I could
- 18:35Speaker 1: see like like a light spot in the corner of
- 18:38Speaker 1: my eye, and then I would look and go over here,
- 18:39Speaker 1: and I was like, I don't think that's good. And
- 18:42Speaker 1: I kind of similar to what you just said about
- 18:44Speaker 1: and I knew that was the last So I didn't
- 18:46Speaker 1: say anything to the trainers because I was feeling good
- 18:48Speaker 1: and like things are going well for me. I didn't
- 18:50Speaker 1: want to say I want to keep playing. And then
- 18:52Speaker 1: the next game I played and I got hit into
- 18:55Speaker 1: the boards and my left which is my top hand
- 18:57Speaker 1: of my stick either bent down or appen fair which way.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It hurt really bad. Still didn't say anything. And then
- 19:02Speaker 1: the third game and meanwhile, my head is killing me.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I have these headaches and all these things. And I
- 19:08Speaker 1: played the third game and then just by the end
- 19:10Speaker 1: of the game, I just I couldn't hold my stick anymore.
- 19:12Speaker 1: My wrist hurts so bad. So just then I was
- 19:14Speaker 1: just useless. And so I remember just going in and
- 19:17Speaker 1: just being like, you know, I did this to my wrist.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I don't know what's wrong, but I can't really hold
- 19:20Speaker 1: my stick. And then I was like, by the way,
- 19:21Speaker 1: like I think.
- 19:24Speaker 5: It's so funny, and this is all coming back to
- 19:26Speaker 5: me in my head. Before I had Tommy John such
- 19:29Speaker 5: a similar story, I didn't know that was like the
- 19:30Speaker 5: actual way it went down for you. So before I
- 19:34Speaker 5: had my elbow done, I was playing with the White
- 19:36Speaker 5: Sox in one of the Monor League teams, and I
- 19:37Speaker 5: was going through like a really good stretch of like
- 19:39Speaker 5: ninety days. I was a closing picture of just like
- 19:41Speaker 5: really like lights out, and my elbow was getting so bad,
- 19:45Speaker 5: and I remember I would wake up in the middle
- 19:46Speaker 5: of the night and it would just be like that
- 19:47Speaker 5: pulsating pain, and then it got so bad where like
- 19:50Speaker 5: I could only bend my elbow like halfway and I
- 19:53Speaker 5: would be in the bullpen.
- 19:54Speaker 2: This is like always resident.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I don't know why it's always stuck with me, but
- 19:57Speaker 5: like I would be in the bullpen about to come
- 19:58Speaker 5: into a game and I could literally not warm up
- 20:01Speaker 5: my armheart so bad, and then I would get in
- 20:03Speaker 5: the game to close and I'd be like throwing ninety
- 20:06Speaker 5: five miles an hour. It was bizarre. It was like
- 20:08Speaker 5: whatever the element was. And at the last, this was
- 20:11Speaker 5: the last night before I had to tell them my
- 20:13Speaker 5: arm was like basically falling off. I remember being in
- 20:15Speaker 5: the shower after the game after pitching and trying to
- 20:18Speaker 5: wash my hair and putting soap in my hand and
- 20:19Speaker 5: I could not get my hand up to my hair
- 20:22Speaker 5: would bend over it again to your I didn't know
- 20:24Speaker 5: that was like with a stick and yeah, and I
- 20:26Speaker 5: kind of looked back and it's just like, I think
- 20:28Speaker 5: I hurt my risk for a reason because I didn't
- 20:30Speaker 5: know at the time.
- 20:31Speaker 2: But that was the last hockey game I ever played.
- 20:32Speaker 5: And.
- 20:34Speaker 1: You know, I looked back at it and then I
- 20:36Speaker 1: had symptoms the rest of the season. So then I
- 20:37Speaker 1: just ended up going home and playoffs started. Because I
- 20:39Speaker 1: hadn't played, I kept getting these headaches. It was interesting.
- 20:41Speaker 1: So I was in the Penguins organization. They sent me
- 20:43Speaker 1: to UPMC Medical Center in Pittsburgh, and at the time
- 20:46Speaker 1: it was Crosby and all these NHL guys were doing
- 20:48Speaker 1: these concussions too, and the more they were doing a
- 20:51Speaker 1: lot before, Like when we're in school, it was just
- 20:52Speaker 1: like you take a test, you ask a few questions,
- 20:54Speaker 1: and then you just go play. You sit in a
- 20:56Speaker 1: dark room and don't do anything until you don't have symptoms.
- 20:58Speaker 1: This was like they rehab your brain as if it
- 21:00Speaker 1: was you hurt your elbow, your knee, you shoulder or whatever.
- 21:03Speaker 1: It was really interesting, but I ended up having symptoms
- 21:06Speaker 1: all the way. I think it was February January. I'll
- 21:07Speaker 1: wait until summertime, geez. And so that's when I think
- 21:11Speaker 1: I started to think about life after hockey and just
- 21:13Speaker 1: kind of realizing it's scary to have, you know, concussion
- 21:17Speaker 1: symptoms that I had. Maddie Price, one of our really good friends,
- 21:20Speaker 1: one of my teammates from BC, had really bad concussions
- 21:23Speaker 1: after weir at school and playing minor leagues as well,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and worse than I did. He was like he couldn't
- 21:28Speaker 1: watch TV, he couldn't be in like a room of
- 21:30Speaker 1: lights on and stuff, and so just it was.
- 21:31Speaker 2: It was scary, but same thing. It was just like
- 21:33Speaker 2: that was the last hockey you never played. I wouldn't
- 21:35Speaker 2: trade any of that, honestly, like that whole those four
- 21:38Speaker 2: or five years whatever it was like those like, I
- 21:41Speaker 2: wouldn't trade any of that experience.
- 21:42Speaker 4: I can only kind of imagine what it must have
- 21:45Speaker 4: felt having to walk away from something that you loved
- 21:48Speaker 4: so much, because at this time, both of you have
- 21:51Speaker 4: graduated college and this is what you thought you were
- 21:55Speaker 4: going to do for your career, so you said, I
- 21:57Speaker 4: started to think about life after hockey? What was that like?
- 22:01Speaker 4: And was it as I feel like you must have
- 22:05Speaker 4: been a little bit.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Depressed exactly how I thought about that, then how I
- 22:09Speaker 1: felt about it, And then I'll share something that I
- 22:11Speaker 1: think maybe like three or four years, it just kind
- 22:14Speaker 1: of dawned on me. That helped me digest like what
- 22:15Speaker 1: I was doing in my life. But it was is
- 22:17Speaker 1: I had no idea what I wanted to do.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I got it. I started working at a mutual fund company.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And finance, And it was really just because some of
- 22:24Speaker 1: my friends got into commercial real estate when they were
- 22:26Speaker 1: down the other ones got into finance. And then I
- 22:28Speaker 1: ended up staying there for about seven months maybe Then
- 22:31Speaker 1: I left and I started coaching, helping out of rcity
- 22:33Speaker 1: team at a prep school here in Boston, and it
- 22:35Speaker 1: kind of so that began my entrepreneurial journey. But the
- 22:39Speaker 1: thing that I I'll try to articulate the right way,
- 22:41Speaker 1: But the thing that I realized that helped me finally
- 22:43Speaker 1: just like move on from it was that it wasn't
- 22:45Speaker 1: so much like hockey was the thing, like my end
- 22:48Speaker 1: goal with things. It was more I started to realized
- 22:49Speaker 1: it was more like what hockey would provide and those
- 22:52Speaker 1: types of things that I connected to. It wasn't like
- 22:54Speaker 1: I wanted to put a sweater on, put my skates on,
- 22:55Speaker 1: skater like obviously I wanted to passion love the game,
- 22:58Speaker 1: but it was more like the emotions and the thing
- 23:00Speaker 1: that would provide, whether it be lifestyle obviously, monetary benefits,
- 23:03Speaker 1: building a platform and like you know, being able to
- 23:06Speaker 1: inspire people with what you're doing or your journey, your story,
- 23:08Speaker 1: things like that, all these different emotions. So then I
- 23:10Speaker 1: just started to realize, like, what are different avenues that
- 23:12Speaker 1: I can still capture, like what I wanted from hockey,
- 23:15Speaker 1: and it just now it's become being an entrepreneur and
- 23:18Speaker 1: I can still get those same things. It's just a
- 23:19Speaker 1: different path. And so I put it into context like
- 23:22Speaker 1: that I didn't think of it so much as a failure,
- 23:25Speaker 1: which I initially internalized it a it's not making it
- 23:27Speaker 1: to the NHL. And also I think Kevin I are
- 23:29Speaker 1: both grounded and appreciate like we have had We've gone
- 23:31Speaker 1: down a very narrow funnel and we've done things in
- 23:33Speaker 1: sports that we weren't further than you know a lot
- 23:36Speaker 1: of people that might sometimes and appreciative of that. But
- 23:39Speaker 1: I think we both felt like failures at some point
- 23:42Speaker 1: with our career. And so I started to realize that
- 23:45Speaker 1: like being an entrepreneur, I can still achieve all those
- 23:46Speaker 1: same things, and like it's something that makes me justice passionate,
- 23:49Speaker 1: if not more now than playing sports. It just like
- 23:52Speaker 1: helped me like get over. I haven't skated in two
- 23:55Speaker 1: or three years now. I used to like there's a
- 23:56Speaker 1: pickup game at Harvard I would go to every Sunday,
- 23:58Speaker 1: and it was like the best thing in the world
- 23:59Speaker 1: for me, Like I didn't want to do anything else
- 24:01Speaker 1: besides that on Sunday mornings and then I'm so happy.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I I don't even watch hockey anymore, and like it
- 24:06Speaker 1: used to be my life. And I think it was
- 24:07Speaker 1: really just like transitioning, Like everything that I wanted to
- 24:10Speaker 1: accomplish in hockey, it has found out like.
- 24:11Speaker 2: I can do that with what's no beam.
- 24:14Speaker 4: It's interesting though, because do you feel like you're trying
- 24:18Speaker 4: to avoid it or do you feel is that what
- 24:20Speaker 4: you feel like you're.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Doing avoid what just hockey at all?
- 24:24Speaker 4: No? Right, Like it's so because you say, like I
- 24:26Speaker 4: haven't even watched it, But is it like a conscious
- 24:29Speaker 4: decision not to watch it?
- 24:30Speaker 5: It's not have zero interest in it. It was for
- 24:32Speaker 5: me initially the first couple of years, I just like
- 24:34Speaker 5: I can't even look at this. And also I just
- 24:35Speaker 5: like learned, you know, it's just like anything in such
- 24:37Speaker 5: a business, right, So I just I was definitely now
- 24:41Speaker 5: I'm more just to my I have a lot of
- 24:43Speaker 5: similar feelings in Manchester described about hockey with baseball. But
- 24:47Speaker 5: initially I was kind of just like, I can't even
- 24:48Speaker 5: I can't watch this.
- 24:50Speaker 4: What did the both of you do once your careers
- 24:54Speaker 4: in sports have ended to stay active because you're both
- 24:58Speaker 4: rehabbing like some serious injury stuff. So what transpires from that?
- 25:02Speaker 5: So when I stopped, I ended up working for big
- 25:05Speaker 5: tech company for about six years where I was actually
- 25:07Speaker 5: before I left for being I lived in Austin, Texas
- 25:10Speaker 5: for about three or four years, and I, for whatever reason,
- 25:14Speaker 5: like I did the real world wasn't what I expected
- 25:16Speaker 5: to be. They just like the pace of play and
- 25:18Speaker 5: just I guess whatever how everybody else was living and
- 25:21Speaker 5: I got super into Ironman's and marathons and that type
- 25:24Speaker 5: of thing. So probably everything given the injury history I
- 25:27Speaker 5: had described, probably the things I shouldn't have been interested in.
- 25:30Speaker 5: I never expected it too, Just like running and cycling,
- 25:33Speaker 5: which became so meditated for me. I don't know if
- 25:35Speaker 5: like all those hours like biking and running, it's still
- 25:37Speaker 5: the same way for me now, just probably different thoughts
- 25:39Speaker 5: that are coming out of my head. But just like
- 25:41Speaker 5: being out in nature by yourself for whatever reason, is like
- 25:44Speaker 5: let all this shit just come out of me, and
- 25:46Speaker 5: like my brain I think just like allowed me to
- 25:49Speaker 5: kind of move on from these sort of things that
- 25:50Speaker 5: were happening in my life.
- 25:51Speaker 4: Totally, And then what did activity look like for you? Also,
- 25:54Speaker 4: Like can we talk more about your concussion and how
- 25:56Speaker 4: long that took to kind of subside?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it was those January If everybody had a concussion
- 26:01Speaker 1: then like really the whole I remember, I was interviewing
- 26:04Speaker 1: and meeting with people in Boston. To be sitting in
- 26:06Speaker 1: a room somewhere to what we're in right now. There's windows,
- 26:08Speaker 1: and so someone be sitting where you are, I'm facing
- 26:10Speaker 1: the window, and I'd be trying to focus on them,
- 26:13Speaker 1: and all I could see is like all this other
- 26:14Speaker 1: crap going on in the background, and my brain felt
- 26:17Speaker 1: like it was like pushing outside.
- 26:18Speaker 2: My head was awful.
- 26:20Speaker 1: And I had that for a long, long long time.
- 26:22Speaker 1: It was interesting because I didn't have it. I didn't
- 26:24Speaker 1: have symptoms where I couldn't do anything. I had to
- 26:26Speaker 1: be in a dark room like I was describing my
- 26:27Speaker 1: friend Matt. But it was just like certain things like
- 26:30Speaker 1: seeing a lot of motion and different things that just
- 26:32Speaker 1: triggered the symptoms. So I could work out and stay
- 26:34Speaker 1: somewhat active, but like I couldn't really push it that hard,
- 26:36Speaker 1: and then I just had like wear and tear from
- 26:38Speaker 1: hockey too, Like my knees always bugged me up until
- 26:40Speaker 1: the last.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Few years because of it.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Beam interestingly enough to like, I never until I joined
- 26:44Speaker 1: across a gym about a year ago, I'd never joined
- 26:47Speaker 1: a gym or had a gym membership or anything like that.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I always just thought I'd accumulated a bunch of crap
- 26:52Speaker 1: over the years, like training equipment, things like that. And
- 26:54Speaker 1: I just have worked out so much as like I
- 26:56Speaker 1: just I don't need to pay for a gym. If
- 26:57Speaker 1: I'm disciplined enough, I can go work out because I
- 26:59Speaker 1: know that they as I need to do. And so
- 27:00Speaker 1: I just do, like some of the stuff I was
- 27:02Speaker 1: do in hockey, I go down every now and then
- 27:03Speaker 1: to work out in Foxborough with my old trainer, just
- 27:06Speaker 1: to stay.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Active and whatnot.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And and then our story just like reconnected. I think
- 27:11Speaker 1: we maybe chatted before we started this, but you're.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Doing my job for me. That's where I was gonna
- 27:16Speaker 4: go act.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Wasn't you tell that story? But that's great.
- 27:20Speaker 1: So Kevin and I, as we mentioned earlier, we weren't.
- 27:23Speaker 1: We were just acquaintances, just someone friends. He's like fine, Yeah,
- 27:27Speaker 1: he's okay. And I was moving out of an apartment
- 27:31Speaker 1: Kevin was moving in. We overlapped. Within that month, Kevin
- 27:34Speaker 1: was training for an iron Man. We just, honestly, it
- 27:37Speaker 1: really just became like best friends. We just like instantly bonded.
- 27:40Speaker 1: We have a very very strong passion obviously around like
- 27:42Speaker 1: wellness and working out and all these different things, and
- 27:44Speaker 1: so we have an amazing group of friends, and I
- 27:47Speaker 1: think like we just happened to like really share that
- 27:49Speaker 1: passionate interest just like we're very intense. And I think
- 27:52Speaker 1: because we just like are so intense about it, we
- 27:54Speaker 1: just connected.
- 27:57Speaker 2: That's that's sorry. Yeah, I don't know. I've never wrung
- 27:59Speaker 2: long distance until I met Kevin. This is unbelievable.
- 28:01Speaker 5: So Brooke, my wife and I were training for iron
- 28:04Speaker 5: manly Placid or iron in Blanc whatever, and we're in
- 28:07Speaker 5: like the last month, like a really big training block.
- 28:09Speaker 2: So we had like a brutal run.
- 28:11Speaker 5: I want to say, like it was like eight by
- 28:13Speaker 5: five minutes efforts with a couple of minutes in between,
- 28:16Speaker 5: like building every five minutes in intensity. They were like brutal.
- 28:19Speaker 5: It's a brutal run. And Matt I see him like
- 28:21Speaker 5: I'm going to be in the hallway or something was like, hey,
- 28:23Speaker 5: can I run with you?
- 28:24Speaker 4: And Brook?
- 28:24Speaker 5: And I'm like, dude, I don't know. This is probably
- 28:27Speaker 5: wouldn't be the one you want to hop in on.
- 28:28Speaker 5: And this is like a twelve mile middle of the
- 28:30Speaker 5: week run with like a bunch of intervals.
- 28:32Speaker 2: It's like, no, no, I want to run before probably
- 28:34Speaker 2: was like three miles.
- 28:35Speaker 4: Oh wow, you're really willing to step up for this friendship.
- 28:37Speaker 2: I had no idea what I was getting.
- 28:39Speaker 5: So she's like, no, no, I want to come. And I
- 28:40Speaker 5: remember like going up to the apartment and being like
- 28:41Speaker 5: this idiot. So he comes, he's brooking it downstairs. We
- 28:45Speaker 5: go for the run and he hung on the first
- 28:48Speaker 5: like I don't know three or four. I had to
- 28:49Speaker 5: sit one out. He had to sit one out. But
- 28:51Speaker 5: I remember you're doing this outside. Yeah, yeah, this is outside.
- 28:54Speaker 5: We were running a round Castle islande here in Boston.
- 28:57Speaker 5: It's like a good mile and a half little doop
- 28:59Speaker 5: that you can crush yourself once and intervals.
- 29:01Speaker 2: And yeah, that's right.
- 29:04Speaker 5: So after a wee get home and I was like like,
- 29:07Speaker 5: he's like that's he's not going to feel good for
- 29:09Speaker 5: like a while.
- 29:10Speaker 2: And you literally were like it wasn't like months that
- 29:12Speaker 2: your knees were bothering you.
- 29:13Speaker 1: It was I was not feeling good, but it's just
- 29:15Speaker 1: like and it was just funny too. Even we did
- 29:17Speaker 1: half marathon was it two months ago?
- 29:18Speaker 5: Now?
- 29:19Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 29:19Speaker 1: And we did a marathon together two years ago with Boston. Yah,
- 29:22Speaker 1: that's sort of how Beams started.
- 29:23Speaker 4: But the same year that I did the Awful Year,
- 29:25Speaker 4: wasn't that?
- 29:27Speaker 2: Yeah? It loved it?
- 29:27Speaker 5: Outraged? Well, I love Yeah. One of our friends are like,
- 29:30Speaker 5: this is how you know? Matt is like is Matt?
- 29:32Speaker 5: We hit the finish sign and everyone's like, oh my god,
- 29:35Speaker 5: Like that was so painful, Like, how the hell did
- 29:36Speaker 5: you get through that?
- 29:37Speaker 2: Matt?
- 29:37Speaker 4: It's like, oh, so much fun? Was that your first marathon?
- 29:41Speaker 2: It was?
- 29:41Speaker 4: Oh, I'm sorry it wasn't insane. Background for the podcast
- 29:46Speaker 4: listeners the Boston Marathon. You've definitely heard me talk about
- 29:49Speaker 4: it on the pod before, but it was in twenty eighteen,
- 29:52Speaker 4: and it was the year that it was hailing when
- 29:54Speaker 4: I started. Yeah, forty to fifty mile an hour headwinds,
- 29:58Speaker 4: torrential rain, leads dropped out because of hypothermia. So I'm
- 30:03Speaker 4: so glad that that day brought you such a positive experience.
- 30:06Speaker 1: But samed like that first day when we were running
- 30:08Speaker 1: that day and then that first run that I did
- 30:09Speaker 1: with you all in my head, I don't have no
- 30:11Speaker 1: idea about like pacing anything. I learned a lot from
- 30:14Speaker 1: Kevin Brook now, but in my head, I'm just thinking
- 30:16Speaker 1: I was like I just had to keep up with them,
- 30:17Speaker 1: Just keep up with him, just keep up. And we
- 30:19Speaker 1: did a half and since the marathon, I've done a
- 30:21Speaker 1: few long runs and now I'm just like I can
- 30:22Speaker 1: go for like eight nine ten mile runs a little
- 30:24Speaker 1: bit more casually and just like not feel like in
- 30:26Speaker 1: a hurt locker for two months. But Kevin and Brooke
- 30:29Speaker 1: did a half marathon about two months ago and Friday,
- 30:31Speaker 1: It's like, oh, like I just want to run to
- 30:32Speaker 1: you guys. I've maybe worn like at the time like
- 30:35Speaker 1: once a month with you, two wice a month, like
- 30:37Speaker 1: just for forty five minutes to an hour, just kind
- 30:39Speaker 1: of a jog. And He's like, no, you're gonna hurt yourself.
- 30:41Speaker 1: You can't, that's idiotic. And the whole time in my
- 30:45Speaker 1: head and I'm just thinking, like he came out of
- 30:46Speaker 1: the gates kind of hot, and the whole time, I'm
- 30:48Speaker 1: just like, just keep up.
- 30:49Speaker 2: With Kevin. Just keep up with Kevin.
- 30:50Speaker 1: I'm just I thought he's just trying to screw with me,
- 30:52Speaker 1: like prove a point that I shouldn't have run with him.
- 30:54Speaker 1: And I hung on until mile thirteen or a mile twelve,
- 30:57Speaker 1: one of the last miles, where he.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Just a passivated.
- 30:59Speaker 1: But there's thirteen miles, the thirteenth file, last point one.
- 31:07Speaker 1: The whole time I was I didn't have no idea
- 31:09Speaker 1: what I was doing other than just like, keep up
- 31:10Speaker 1: with Kevin.
- 31:11Speaker 2: I was listening to David Goggin's book, and this was
- 31:13Speaker 2: just like that.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Who runs a marathon?
- 31:15Speaker 2: I'll listen to freak Pat.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, I love everyone that listens to audio
- 31:22Speaker 4: while they run. I appreciate you heard the listeners. You're great,
- 31:24Speaker 4: but I just can't imagine listening to a podcast during
- 31:28Speaker 4: a marathon. Personally.
- 31:30Speaker 2: He's what I needed to listen to to keep going.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Extremely. I support it. I hope that. I hope that
- 31:34Speaker 4: I have that vibe for other people too.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Because you and you weren't even I don't think they're
- 31:37Speaker 1: paying attention to me. I head on, my key's just
- 31:39Speaker 1: trying to screw with me.
- 31:40Speaker 2: I have to keep up with them. You tell yourself
- 31:42Speaker 2: the story.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Yeah, so much motivation. Okay, so you guys reconnect your
- 31:46Speaker 4: now workout buddies and where does Beam come into the mix.
- 31:50Speaker 1: During marathon training. We've also been talking about go we
- 31:53Speaker 1: should do something together, something like. We looked at doing
- 31:55Speaker 1: different supplements, different categories, things that we would use on
- 31:58Speaker 1: a daily basis, and we just started reading Kevin he
- 32:01Speaker 1: like found a blog, sent it. We were a big
- 32:03Speaker 1: Dave ass brief fans. I think it was a bulletproof
- 32:05Speaker 1: blog about CB and what it was, and it was
- 32:08Speaker 1: really it's fun to look back at it now because
- 32:09Speaker 1: we're just consumers. Like all the misconceptions we talked about
- 32:11Speaker 1: we had at one point, Yeah, and we read about it,
- 32:14Speaker 1: we talked about it, we initiated that it's not for me.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Try Finally when Yeah finally tried it, I sat on
- 32:20Speaker 1: a couch and I was like, I'm just waiting to
- 32:22Speaker 1: get high.
- 32:23Speaker 2: What is supposed to happen right now?
- 32:24Speaker 1: And long story short, the cliff notes of that, we
- 32:26Speaker 1: just tried a bunch of stuff somewhere efficacious. We started
- 32:28Speaker 1: to look a little bit closer, looking at the different companies,
- 32:30Speaker 1: the brands, the form factor, how you consume it, and
- 32:34Speaker 1: then the short storys like this is it, this is
- 32:37Speaker 1: what we want to do.
- 32:38Speaker 5: We didn't really see that many people leaning into the
- 32:40Speaker 5: fact that there's no THHC in the product, which always,
- 32:42Speaker 5: like when we talked about it as athletes, a lot
- 32:44Speaker 5: of our thesis was it not just athletes, but parents.
- 32:47Speaker 5: You know, they don't want a bottle of CBD that
- 32:49Speaker 5: has even trace amounts of THHD on the counter. So
- 32:52Speaker 5: we saw, I think the shortest way to say it
- 32:54Speaker 5: would be an opportunity to bring a product to market
- 32:56Speaker 5: what was actually in the bottle, you know that was
- 32:58Speaker 5: true to our personal diyes athletes, and then build a
- 33:01Speaker 5: really beautiful brand around it that represents transparency, honesty, compassion,
- 33:05Speaker 5: all the things that we want to bring to the
- 33:06Speaker 5: world and kind of bring the two of them together.
- 33:09Speaker 5: Easier said than done, but that was kind of the
- 33:11Speaker 5: precipice of it. And then the beginning was what we bought,
- 33:15Speaker 5: like twenty units.
- 33:16Speaker 1: I took this desk. Obviously no one can see, but
- 33:19Speaker 1: we took that desk. We didn't want to fold up.
- 33:21Speaker 1: We wanted to elevate our tabling experience, and we were
- 33:24Speaker 1: literally just driving on seaport. It barely fits in our car.
- 33:27Speaker 1: We had the same cars of our cars and we
- 33:30Speaker 1: just were like idiots walking around Seaport and take us
- 33:32Speaker 1: from Core Power to CrossFit Gym to a juice shop
- 33:34Speaker 1: and we ran off in the other waders were They're
- 33:37Speaker 1: still the same idiots, we just have a bigger.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Team and more people.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Taking a break from today's episode, just shout out beat
- 33:50Speaker 3: Elite from Human. As I mentioned, I recently started integrating
- 33:54Speaker 3: beat Elite into my pre run routine and for me,
- 33:57Speaker 3: I feel like the powder is my insurance to help
- 33:59Speaker 3: keep me doing what I love for longer and feeling better.
- 34:02Speaker 3: I can feel it working during my long runs when
- 34:05Speaker 3: I get into the later miles where I can feel
- 34:07Speaker 3: the strain in my legs, the burn in my lungs,
- 34:09Speaker 3: that's all remedied by the extra oxygen I'm getting into
- 34:12Speaker 3: my muscles and through my body. And what makes me
- 34:15Speaker 3: to lead an awesome products to integrate into your training routine.
- 34:18Speaker 3: It's no wonder why the product is trusted by hundreds
- 34:21Speaker 3: of elite teams, athletes and organizations all over the world.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Take your game to the next level with the elite
- 34:27Speaker 3: by going to Live human dot com. Slash Hurdle and
- 34:30Speaker 3: get twenty percent off your first purchase. Again, this is
- 34:34Speaker 3: an exclusive offer to my listeners only. You won't find
- 34:37Speaker 3: it anywhere else. That's live h U m a n
- 34:40Speaker 3: dot com slash hurdle, Live Human dot com slash hurdle.
- 34:50Speaker 4: But how do you guys that know absolutely nothing about
- 34:53Speaker 4: CBD and have never smoked pot got get to a
- 34:57Speaker 4: point where you understand like even where to begin with
- 35:01Speaker 4: this kind of company?
- 35:02Speaker 5: A lot of really bad conversations. Yeah, there a lot
- 35:06Speaker 5: of dead ends and a lot of searching around. Just
- 35:09Speaker 5: stick to itiveness, honestly, visiting different locations, manufacturers, people that
- 35:14Speaker 5: we could potentially partner with, and just just like a
- 35:17Speaker 5: lot of dead ends, actually the best way to put it.
- 35:19Speaker 5: And then ultimately we found some people and some partners
- 35:22Speaker 5: that could execute on the standards that we wanted, and
- 35:24Speaker 5: they believed in us too, and it just was kind
- 35:27Speaker 5: of like, let's let's let's start this a little bit
- 35:30Speaker 5: and dabbling it together, and then it ultimately just kind
- 35:32Speaker 5: of spiraled and kept growing.
- 35:33Speaker 4: But talk to me about the moment that you both
- 35:36Speaker 4: believed truly in CBD.
- 35:40Speaker 5: So I have a pretty unique story. So I've been
- 35:43Speaker 5: this is part of the reason why we really wanted
- 35:45Speaker 5: to do this. Once we found the product that is
- 35:47Speaker 5: being within the bottle today for being I have been
- 35:50Speaker 5: taking that. So I've been a chronic migraine stuft for
- 35:53Speaker 5: my whole life, really really bad, like where I would
- 35:55Speaker 5: get maybe the last few years, it was getting to
- 35:58Speaker 5: maybe like once a month where I'd like double vision,
- 36:00Speaker 5: I'd be in bed for a whole day.
- 36:02Speaker 2: It was awful.
- 36:03Speaker 5: And once Matt and I found a way to source beam,
- 36:05Speaker 5: I've been I started taking it and it's been eighteen
- 36:09Speaker 5: twenty months and whatever it is, and found that product
- 36:11Speaker 5: where I haven't had a migraine.
- 36:12Speaker 4: And when you were having those, what did doctors say
- 36:16Speaker 4: was causing it?
- 36:16Speaker 2: It was cross cross it.
- 36:19Speaker 4: Yeah, story really, yeah, what happened. I was gonna say,
- 36:23Speaker 4: like what happens?
- 36:24Speaker 5: Because I would get them like after really really really
- 36:26Speaker 5: intense exercise, just cross it. And I would say I
- 36:29Speaker 5: saw a neurologists and he's just like, so you get
- 36:32Speaker 5: these like once in a month after CrossFit.
- 36:34Speaker 2: And I'm like, yeah, why do you still do CrossFit?
- 36:38Speaker 2: I was like, that's a great question, but I can't stop.
- 36:41Speaker 4: Did you not experience it with the running or any
- 36:44Speaker 4: laundry every.
- 36:45Speaker 5: Once in a while when I do really tough, tough
- 36:47Speaker 5: running workout, like intervals or something, I can get them,
- 36:49Speaker 5: but it's eight at a time. Times it was it
- 36:51Speaker 5: was CrossFit so interesting. I saw multiple neurologists. I'd enorrized
- 36:54Speaker 5: in my brain. I had like it was it was,
- 36:57Speaker 5: It really was. Honestly, it was a big problem in
- 36:59Speaker 5: my life because I was so active and I was
- 37:01Speaker 5: always wanting to do things before and after work, and
- 37:03Speaker 5: I was working in my previous job before being and
- 37:05Speaker 5: it was like, oh, I have a big meeting at
- 37:07Speaker 5: five PM, Like I can't go across with this morning, right.
- 37:10Speaker 5: So it's constantly like planning my life around when I
- 37:12Speaker 5: might get a migraine.
- 37:13Speaker 4: Right, which is super inconvenient.
- 37:15Speaker 2: It was awful.
- 37:15Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the beautiful the beautiful thing about being we
- 37:18Speaker 5: always talk about. I don't know that there's it feels
- 37:22Speaker 5: like once in a lifetime to be in an industry
- 37:24Speaker 5: where it's an emerging market and there's a massive financial upside, right,
- 37:27Speaker 5: but also to be an industry where there's not just that,
- 37:30Speaker 5: but you're also doing something that's like profoundly impacting people's lives.
- 37:34Speaker 4: When were you convinced that CBD was the move.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah for me personally, so post hockey, both my knees
- 37:40Speaker 1: and I've had several ankle injuries on my right ankle,
- 37:44Speaker 1: I've had just it just they've been bugging me. And
- 37:46Speaker 1: so it's probably like five this years ince hockey, and
- 37:49Speaker 1: it really has prohibited me from doing things like training
- 37:52Speaker 1: for marathon cross like really intense ex or so that
- 37:54Speaker 1: was kind of like keeping up with my fitness through
- 37:56Speaker 1: like some hockey things. And it was during the marathon
- 37:59Speaker 1: like not doing like distant performance like oh my god,
- 38:01Speaker 1: my body's given.
- 38:01Speaker 2: My knees are throbbed.
- 38:02Speaker 1: And this is like really early into the training we
- 38:04Speaker 1: start using CBD and I just started my niece feel
- 38:08Speaker 1: a little bit better, my niece fee a little bit better,
- 38:10Speaker 1: and then I really I do anything that I want
- 38:13Speaker 1: now activity wise, workout wise, and I just couldn't do
- 38:16Speaker 1: that before.
- 38:17Speaker 2: So like for me, and in my personal story, that's
- 38:19Speaker 2: when we talk.
- 38:20Speaker 1: About like every you know, how people experience with better
- 38:21Speaker 1: feels like that, for me, that was like such like
- 38:24Speaker 1: on a hundred times level better of what I was feeling before,
- 38:27Speaker 1: and it was just like life changing.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Now I gotta fight.
- 38:30Speaker 1: It's like I used to train so much with hockey,
- 38:31Speaker 1: but now way more fit than I ever have been.
- 38:33Speaker 1: You know, it was even ten years ago when I
- 38:35Speaker 1: was in college and doing all these workouts and things
- 38:36Speaker 1: like that, and it's really for me. It's just like
- 38:39Speaker 1: I'm I like took the shackles off of like, you know,
- 38:42Speaker 1: letting my knees keep me from doing stuff and things
- 38:44Speaker 1: like that.
- 38:44Speaker 2: And so that's when I was like, oh, this was
- 38:46Speaker 2: a good stuff.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Oh wan, I played Devil's advocate for a mental lose.
- 38:49Speaker 4: I'm sure you guys get this all the time with anything,
- 38:52Speaker 4: right like, and I mean I can speak to this
- 38:54Speaker 4: with like I am obsessed with Athletic Greens. My listeners
- 38:58Speaker 4: hear me talk about it all the time. But I
- 38:59Speaker 4: was an avid Athletic Greens consumer before I ever connected
- 39:03Speaker 4: with anyone at the company, just because I love how
- 39:05Speaker 4: I feel when it's part of my life. The same thing.
- 39:08Speaker 4: I'm sure for some with using CBD products, they just
- 39:11Speaker 4: feel better. Like both of you are saying, it made
- 39:13Speaker 4: like a big change for both of you and how
- 39:15Speaker 4: you dealt with or then didn't deal with pain. Sometimes
- 39:20Speaker 4: some people will say, well, could that just be a
- 39:24Speaker 4: placebo effect? Like you've added this new thing to your routine.
- 39:27Speaker 4: You in your head, it's like the thing and like
- 39:30Speaker 4: everything is great and you're just like running into the
- 39:32Speaker 4: pastures carrying a green juice Like that sounds wonderful. So, like,
- 39:35Speaker 4: what about the placebo effect?
- 39:38Speaker 5: No, it's a great question. Yeah, there's there might be
- 39:40Speaker 5: some of that the way, Yeah, I was just talking
- 39:42Speaker 5: about the endocannabinoid system a lot, so the.
- 39:44Speaker 4: Way you just like, I'm just gonna talk about the
- 39:47Speaker 4: end of.
- 39:49Speaker 5: The yeah, which is yeah, one on one. So the
- 39:55Speaker 5: endocannabinoid system, and this is very much trivializing it, but
- 39:59Speaker 5: think that, Like, it's like the connection between your brain
- 40:02Speaker 5: and your physical body. Right, So when you're stressed out,
- 40:05Speaker 5: you've had a tough day at work, whatever's going on
- 40:06Speaker 5: in your life, a tough workout, that connection between your
- 40:10Speaker 5: brain and your body gets frayed and broken over time.
- 40:12Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
- 40:13Speaker 5: It's scientifically proven that that leads to insomnia, depression, anxiety,
- 40:16Speaker 5: all these horrible things that are going on in our
- 40:18Speaker 5: lives when your body is an imbalance with endocannabinoid system.
- 40:22Speaker 5: High quality CBD has the exact same endocannabinoid receptors in
- 40:26Speaker 5: it that we have in our body. So when you
- 40:27Speaker 5: take it, it's almost like I think of it almost
- 40:30Speaker 5: as premium engine oil bringing your body back into balance
- 40:32Speaker 5: or a state of mind you should be. It's reconnecting
- 40:34Speaker 5: those receptors. Think of those receptors on both sides just
- 40:37Speaker 5: kind of reigniting and everything recharging. So that's why a
- 40:40Speaker 5: lot of people are like, how this is like snake while,
- 40:41Speaker 5: how is this going to give me energy but also
- 40:43Speaker 5: make me sleep deeper? And the short answer to that is,
- 40:46Speaker 5: like it's you know, when your body's back in the
- 40:47Speaker 5: balance or homeostasis, your mind's at the point of at
- 40:50Speaker 5: the point of.
- 40:51Speaker 2: The day where it should be.
- 40:52Speaker 5: So you're gonna sleep deeper, kne's going to feel a
- 40:53Speaker 5: little les inflamed, you're not going to get migraines, all
- 40:56Speaker 5: sorts of things. And you know, there's a lot of
- 40:58Speaker 5: people that come to us and say, like, give me
- 41:00Speaker 5: the exact science of the clinical study on CBD right now.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Right people a haven't been taking it in enough abundance
- 41:06Speaker 5: for long enough to have any really hard scientific data.
- 41:08Speaker 5: But what I would say, particularly to the Placeboat point,
- 41:11Speaker 5: is where the brand we're fortunate enough, is getting big
- 41:15Speaker 5: enough where we're having multiple people on almost I'd say
- 41:18Speaker 5: definitely on a daily basis that are coming to us
- 41:19Speaker 5: and they're getting off of you know, ssrity, depression and anxiety.
- 41:23Speaker 5: I didn't just placeib all these migraines out of mind.
- 41:26Speaker 5: That doesn't I don't know that's I don't think that's
- 41:28Speaker 5: a thing, right, ssriise for pressiing anxiety, migrating medicine, sleep, medicine,
- 41:33Speaker 5: narcotics for chronic pain, like serious serious stuff.
- 41:36Speaker 1: And then just impacting like me, pain, stress, not sleeping,
- 41:41Speaker 1: not like all serious things, but also just like your lifestyle.
- 41:43Speaker 1: So you say there's just a lot of citizens data,
- 41:45Speaker 1: a lot of citizens signs are just people constantly giving
- 41:47Speaker 1: us as feedback the better that they're experiencing by using Beam,
- 41:51Speaker 1: And so we don't get too overly rotated on making
- 41:55Speaker 1: claims and things like that. We just say, like the
- 41:57Speaker 1: proof is in the putting of their products, and people
- 41:59Speaker 1: are having positive results. And everybody metabolizes CBD differently, just
- 42:02Speaker 1: the way you would caffeine, So sometimes people might might
- 42:06Speaker 1: not find a desired effect from it or anything like that,
- 42:08Speaker 1: but for the most part, we just like people are
- 42:11Speaker 1: feeling better by using our products, whether there is maybe
- 42:14Speaker 1: someplace Ebo to that where it's their Endo cannabide system
- 42:18Speaker 1: being more balanced.
- 42:20Speaker 2: So we can.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Pretty level howded I guess we're not going to come
- 42:23Speaker 1: back at someone and be like, no, you're wrong, but it's.
- 42:27Speaker 5: Yeah, the people are repeating. The repeat orders that we
- 42:31Speaker 5: see in the product too are pretty incredibly impressive.
- 42:33Speaker 2: So it's doing something for a lot of people.
- 42:35Speaker 4: Okay, So it's starting to make sense to me, which
- 42:37Speaker 4: is good because I feel, like I said, I get
- 42:39Speaker 4: at least twelve CBD pitches a day and no one's
- 42:41Speaker 4: really been able to break it down for me in
- 42:44Speaker 4: a way that I can truly understand. So the two
- 42:46Speaker 4: of you have this idea, you find a formula that
- 42:51Speaker 4: seems to be working for the both of you. When
- 42:53Speaker 4: does it go from we have this formula to shoot,
- 42:56Speaker 4: we're going to make a company.
- 42:57Speaker 5: We were sitting with Bruce, one of Matt's close friend
- 43:00Speaker 5: and mentors, who owns an ice cream company in Massachusetts,
- 43:03Speaker 5: and he gave us we were kind of spit on
- 43:04Speaker 5: on the idea. I think we had a little bit
- 43:06Speaker 5: of product at the time, and he's just like, Okay, well,
- 43:08Speaker 5: if you want to take this idea like put action
- 43:10Speaker 5: behind it, go sell. I think it was like, go
- 43:11Speaker 5: sell one hundred units of their product and see how
- 43:14Speaker 5: fast you.
- 43:15Speaker 2: Can do it. We're like okay, and Matt and I are.
- 43:17Speaker 5: Very much like when we put our mind to something,
- 43:19Speaker 5: it's like, okay, we're going to go do it. And
- 43:21Speaker 5: I think that took us like two weeks. I love
- 43:23Speaker 5: the picture we have of just like the part that
- 43:25Speaker 5: you have in that first little bookcase. And then it
- 43:27Speaker 5: was like, Okay, we sold one hundred units, let's buy
- 43:29Speaker 5: two hundred and see how fast we can sell those.
- 43:30Speaker 2: And we didn't even have a website at the time.
- 43:32Speaker 5: We were literally just like it was like purely hustling
- 43:35Speaker 5: to like kind we didn't have a website. Yeah, and
- 43:38Speaker 5: then it was like, let's buy four hundred units. And
- 43:39Speaker 5: then all of a sudden, we're like, okay, people like
- 43:41Speaker 5: really like this stuff just like we do. Like, let's
- 43:43Speaker 5: let's put a little bit more thought around this. And
- 43:45Speaker 5: that's when we started making some more business like decisions
- 43:49Speaker 5: when it came to buying inventory from a margins perspective,
- 43:52Speaker 5: we started getting some more customer data, and then I
- 43:56Speaker 5: think we made the decision to.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Raise some money.
- 43:57Speaker 5: But it was it was really, it wasn't much science
- 44:00Speaker 5: to like other than just like, let's just take these
- 44:02Speaker 5: hundred units to go sell them as fast as we can,
- 44:03Speaker 5: as many people as we can, and buy more and
- 44:05Speaker 5: do it again.
- 44:05Speaker 4: So then at this time, like, what's life like for
- 44:07Speaker 4: you guys. You're both living in Boston, So what's going on?
- 44:12Speaker 5: Yeah, So life for me at the time is I'm working,
- 44:15Speaker 5: I have a full time job. I'm getting married three
- 44:19Speaker 5: or four months later. My wife is super busy attorney.
- 44:22Speaker 5: We had there was not really the best time to
- 44:25Speaker 5: do this, but we decided to do it. I was
- 44:29Speaker 5: working full time and just I guess fitting this in
- 44:33Speaker 5: I guess for lack of a better way wherever I could.
- 44:34Speaker 5: So it was some long, stressful days. And Matt, yeah,
- 44:38Speaker 5: I was.
- 44:39Speaker 1: I had just gotten unengaged and we also had a
- 44:41Speaker 1: business together, and so living in a house by myself
- 44:44Speaker 1: in the suburbs, and just like, do I really want
- 44:47Speaker 1: to do.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Something from scratch again? Yeah?
- 44:49Speaker 1: The second we just like turned it on. Like Kevin said,
- 44:51Speaker 1: just our personalities. I think your question earlier too, Like
- 44:53Speaker 1: you guys didn't know anything about cannabis manufacturing all that stuff.
- 44:56Speaker 2: We're just we have very very very obsessive personalities.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Just tell we just became very obsessed with all things
- 45:04Speaker 1: bringing Beam to life, from branding, manufacturing.
- 45:07Speaker 2: What's in the bottle, all that stuff.
- 45:09Speaker 1: And it was really just like it was like a
- 45:11Speaker 1: split decision, not split decision, but it's like a one
- 45:13Speaker 1: side decision was made. It was just we went at
- 45:16Speaker 1: it bajillion miles an hour and we're scrappy. We're using
- 45:19Speaker 1: a spare bedroom at the house to do all the
- 45:21Speaker 1: packaging and everything. We finally moved to we work, had
- 45:24Speaker 1: just us in there and we went to a bigger
- 45:26Speaker 1: office and we recently just got a bigger office as
- 45:28Speaker 1: the teams continued to grow. But it's like the twelve
- 45:31Speaker 1: last twelve months have gone by and the snap of
- 45:32Speaker 1: a finger, and it's been crazy, crazy. There were so
- 45:37Speaker 1: many reasons not to do it. Yeah, the fact maybe
- 45:39Speaker 1: one reason to do it is because we wanted to
- 45:41Speaker 1: and we thought we could make it great. But other
- 45:43Speaker 1: than that, like everyone was like, don't do it for
- 45:45Speaker 1: this reason, don't do it for this reason.
- 45:46Speaker 2: It's crowded. It's our line was always like, there's always
- 45:49Speaker 2: room for the best.
- 45:51Speaker 1: So yeah, one thing that is we've chatted with people
- 45:54Speaker 1: too and we're fortunately we appreciate like people being interested
- 45:57Speaker 1: and yeah, being like how we've done it, what is CBD?
- 45:59Speaker 1: But also just like this story of how we built
- 46:00Speaker 1: it so far and it was really paralyzed to look
- 46:03Speaker 1: at it because we had no knowledge in manufacturing and
- 46:06Speaker 1: like all these different things and where we come from
- 46:07Speaker 1: and pricing and what SRP meant and all these different
- 46:11Speaker 1: things and things that we obviously learned. I'd say one
- 46:13Speaker 1: of the biggest things that we did well was we
- 46:16Speaker 1: didn't get like a deer in headlights and anything like wet.
- 46:19Speaker 1: We knew the stuff that we didn't know, but we
- 46:21Speaker 1: just got moving. And like sometimes people see the brand
- 46:25Speaker 1: from the outside and just think it looks beautiful and
- 46:27Speaker 1: it's nice and it's elegant, it is absolute chaos underneath that.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Like even just this last month as we've watched new products,
- 46:32Speaker 1: but also even when we started, it's like we've made
- 46:34Speaker 1: so many mistakes, but we just kept moving and if
- 46:36Speaker 1: like something wasn't working, then we just tried a different
- 46:38Speaker 1: approach to it, and eventually like found tried something else,
- 46:41Speaker 1: it didn't work, we tried something else. Then if that work,
- 46:43Speaker 1: we kept going. And I think that's One of the
- 46:45Speaker 1: things with anybody where it's starting a podcast, a business,
- 46:48Speaker 1: their own whatever, is just like just keep moving, because
- 46:51Speaker 1: it's so easy to get stuck by not being totally
- 46:54Speaker 1: certain on like the approach and strategy that you need
- 46:56Speaker 1: to take.
- 46:57Speaker 4: Can you identify or pinpoint any of the earliest failures
- 47:02Speaker 4: of sorts that you made that were the biggest lessons
- 47:05Speaker 4: for you looking back on it?
- 47:06Speaker 5: How long do you have that's our next we have
- 47:10Speaker 5: the next podcast. We've messed up every single packaging? Do
- 47:13Speaker 5: we mess up even the blends? We've messed up every
- 47:16Speaker 5: single packaging we've ever done. In what sense our first
- 47:20Speaker 5: labels we had marketing on there that we shouldn't have
- 47:22Speaker 5: had on them. We had just rip all of those
- 47:24Speaker 5: off before we sold them, put new labels on by hand,
- 47:27Speaker 5: just everything everything, And then there's just like so many
- 47:31Speaker 5: We always say to the team too, Like everyone we hire,
- 47:33Speaker 5: I always say.
- 47:33Speaker 2: To them, is like, wet, I mess up more than
- 47:36Speaker 2: any everyone. So like you.
- 47:38Speaker 5: Do work as hard as you can, but like we're
- 47:40Speaker 5: not going to get mad at you for trying, for
- 47:42Speaker 5: pushing the limits, So we expect you to mess up
- 47:45Speaker 5: because we all we do is mess up.
- 47:46Speaker 4: I think that's really powerful also to see and hear
- 47:49Speaker 4: from a leader, because a lot of the time people
- 47:52Speaker 4: that lead are so concerned about setting a good example,
- 47:54Speaker 4: but don't understand that a good example can be an
- 47:56Speaker 4: honest and vulnerable example, which is so important when you're
- 48:00Speaker 4: trying to sympathize and especially when you're trying to grow
- 48:05Speaker 4: a team.
- 48:07Speaker 2: We have so many, even these blends that just came
- 48:09Speaker 2: the first.
- 48:10Speaker 4: Two what's the blend? So okay, So why don't we
- 48:12Speaker 4: break down what's in the product line? Because you guys
- 48:15Speaker 4: just started with an oil and a salve, So then
- 48:18Speaker 4: what comes next? And when do you get to a
- 48:20Speaker 4: point like did you know you always wanted to expand
- 48:22Speaker 4: beyond that?
- 48:25Speaker 1: We did because when we looked at the market initially, everybody,
- 48:28Speaker 1: for the majority of the CBD space, like people are
- 48:31Speaker 1: just putting labels on stuff.
- 48:32Speaker 2: There's a lot.
- 48:33Speaker 1: There's the oils, the dog treats, the bath bombs, the babes,
- 48:36Speaker 1: those patches that you put on all these different things.
- 48:39Speaker 1: We really looked at it and we said, we really
- 48:40Speaker 1: want to build a wellness brand, and we just said, like,
- 48:42Speaker 1: how are we consuming supplements? And so we looked at
- 48:44Speaker 1: all these form factors and the packaging and how you're
- 48:47Speaker 1: consuming it. And one of the really cool things we
- 48:49Speaker 1: learned initially when we just had oil is like people
- 48:51Speaker 1: are using this oil because of the endocannabine system and
- 48:53Speaker 1: what Kevin explaining, there's so many use cases from sleep
- 48:56Speaker 1: to recovery, inflammation, stress.
- 48:58Speaker 2: All these different things.
- 48:59Speaker 1: And so we thought, or we realize, people are using
- 49:01Speaker 1: beam for very specific reasons, and so why don't we
- 49:04Speaker 1: enhance that effect by taking our CBD, which we can
- 49:06Speaker 1: talk about with these new powders, and then pairing that
- 49:09Speaker 1: with a really unique stack of other ingredients to help
- 49:11Speaker 1: really focus on that pain point, whether it be sleep, focus, inflammation.
- 49:14Speaker 4: Recovery, got it? And the blends. So the blends are
- 49:16Speaker 4: just a powder.
- 49:18Speaker 5: So the blends are nano malsified CBD, which also gets
- 49:21Speaker 5: a little ignitity.
- 49:22Speaker 4: I'm going to skip out on the nano explanation, but basically,
- 49:26Speaker 4: it's a powder. It's a powder, it's our CBD supercharged.
- 49:29Speaker 4: But again, the blends aren't just CBD. There's other stuff
- 49:33Speaker 4: in there that people are looking to consume in a
- 49:36Speaker 4: supplement form, So what kind of stuff is that?
- 49:38Speaker 1: So we have Dream, which is for better sleep, and
- 49:40Speaker 1: it's our CBD, nanoplus, Rishi, magnesia, meltnin and alphenine. And
- 49:46Speaker 1: then we have Clarity, which is for better focus, and
- 49:48Speaker 1: it's our CBD plus Ashroganda rodeal in mind spade.
- 49:51Speaker 4: And what do you put that in? Where do I
- 49:53Speaker 4: blend it?
- 49:54Speaker 1: Yeah, Dream is meant to be its own standalone drink
- 49:57Speaker 1: at night, and so it has a great hot chocolate
- 49:59Speaker 1: taste to it, so that's hot nutbill hot water, and
- 50:02Speaker 1: then you just kind of relaxed at night and step
- 50:04Speaker 1: on it and have a good night's sleep. And then
- 50:07Speaker 1: Clarity is meant to be more functional and just like
- 50:09Speaker 1: blend into your routine during the day where they'd be
- 50:12Speaker 1: in the morning with your coffee or smoothie anything like that.
- 50:16Speaker 1: And so the idea was not to give it a
- 50:18Speaker 1: flavor profile, but just let it be a boost to
- 50:20Speaker 1: something that you're already consuming during the day.
- 50:22Speaker 4: So at this point, like, did you even imagine that
- 50:24Speaker 4: you would be here?
- 50:25Speaker 2: Never?
- 50:26Speaker 5: I remember what was I freaking out about earlier this week?
- 50:29Speaker 5: I can't remember something, and Matt was texting me he
- 50:32Speaker 5: was still in the office, and I was losing my
- 50:34Speaker 5: mind at my apartment, which is like a minute walk
- 50:36Speaker 5: away and he's like, oh, I'm just in the office.
- 50:38Speaker 5: Like looking at our first space, man, I had like this,
- 50:40Speaker 5: like the smallest office in Viewer of history, like a
- 50:44Speaker 5: thirty square foot office just the two of us with
- 50:46Speaker 5: boxing that we could barely sit in. Then we hired
- 50:48Speaker 5: a few more people and moved to like a four
- 50:50Speaker 5: or five person office, and then a bigger office. In
- 50:52Speaker 5: the team is I don't know, ten twelve people full
- 50:55Speaker 5: twenty people.
- 50:56Speaker 1: That are very closely involved in the business, the larger
- 50:58Speaker 1: majority of them full time.
- 51:00Speaker 5: So and the point with that is like I think
- 51:01Speaker 5: you're which I didn't take your advice. Probably your point
- 51:03Speaker 5: was like why don't you just take a moment and
- 51:05Speaker 5: reflect on with the last year is Ben, But I
- 51:07Speaker 5: think that's also what's like why we continue, why we've
- 51:11Speaker 5: had a successful first year is because we don't really
- 51:14Speaker 5: celebrate anything, which probably is a gift and a curse.
- 51:16Speaker 2: The team tries to keep us balanced on that, Yeah,
- 51:20Speaker 2: do something.
- 51:20Speaker 5: I remember we just closed around a funding and everyone's like,
- 51:22Speaker 5: let's this is great, and we're like, uh, yeah, this
- 51:25Speaker 5: is this is good.
- 51:25Speaker 4: All right. Anyways, next thing, next point of business. I mean,
- 51:30Speaker 4: obviously now with a team, you have the opportunity to
- 51:33Speaker 4: mentor more and more people. When you reflect on the
- 51:37Speaker 4: last few years of growing this company, what would you
- 51:40Speaker 4: say has been one of the best pieces of advice
- 51:42Speaker 4: that you have been offered.
- 51:46Speaker 1: I think you hear it and you don't know that
- 51:47Speaker 1: it's true until you do it. But I would say
- 51:49Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing is that if you're really
- 51:51Speaker 1: committed to something, you can do whatever.
- 51:54Speaker 2: You want to do.
- 51:55Speaker 1: And I think that's easy to hear and some just
- 51:57Speaker 1: like motivational common sense, but I think going through this
- 52:00Speaker 1: last year, we're very, very committed to the milestones that
- 52:04Speaker 1: we set in our goals and building this vision that
- 52:06Speaker 1: we had, and you hear that a lot, whether it
- 52:08Speaker 1: be like from close friends or mentors or just podcasts
- 52:10Speaker 1: and books and things like that and people you admire,
- 52:13Speaker 1: and I think it's it's been I feel like we've
- 52:16Speaker 1: lived that the last twelve months. We are way past
- 52:19Speaker 1: Like in a way, I'm not surprised where we are
- 52:22Speaker 1: because we worked really hard for it, but we just
- 52:24Speaker 1: didn't know that we'd get here that quickly. And I
- 52:26Speaker 1: think that's probably something that again, like you hear that,
- 52:28Speaker 1: like if you really commit, you can do things, you
- 52:30Speaker 1: can create things, and I think now that we've experienced this,
- 52:34Speaker 1: it's something that it's one thing that I pass on.
- 52:38Speaker 2: I'd say too, like trust your own convictions and intuition,
- 52:43Speaker 2: because there's so many people that are giving us so
- 52:46Speaker 2: much advice, and it's just like, if you take it all,
- 52:49Speaker 2: you'll never get anything done. So I think we want advice,
- 52:53Speaker 2: particularly for people that have helped us get to where
- 52:55Speaker 2: we are today and in the future, but ultimately, like
- 52:59Speaker 2: that kind of stops with us. So we're the ones
- 53:01Speaker 2: making the decision.
- 53:02Speaker 5: So it's like, we know what's best for being, so
- 53:05Speaker 5: we need to continue to kind of to press on
- 53:07Speaker 5: that and ground out a lot of the other noise
- 53:10Speaker 5: that's that we're hearing.
- 53:12Speaker 2: I love that one. Yeah.
- 53:14Speaker 4: What's it like to work with your best friend?
- 53:16Speaker 2: We have an interesting relationship.
- 53:18Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we we It's it's Matt and I
- 53:22Speaker 5: are very very different in so many ways. I'm much
- 53:27Speaker 5: more like reactive and emotional. The one thing I love
- 53:29Speaker 5: about Matt is he never panics. I always panic.
- 53:32Speaker 2: It's a good thing that I think.
- 53:33Speaker 4: I'm kind of like you.
- 53:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I always like, which is I'm trying to be
- 53:36Speaker 5: more like that yeah, Well, it's certainly well like, and
- 53:38Speaker 5: I think we balance because I'm very much like you know,
- 53:41Speaker 5: very fiery, and we'll like talk off the coffin and
- 53:44Speaker 5: make it very impulsive decisions, which has served us well
- 53:47Speaker 5: at certain times.
- 53:47Speaker 2: And Matt is very much like you know.
- 53:50Speaker 5: He he's thoughtful and thinks about things before you say
- 53:52Speaker 5: that says them. We're both incredibly intense and like have
- 53:56Speaker 5: just a really i'd say, almost sometimes terrifying conviction with
- 54:00Speaker 5: what we think we can do with a company.
- 54:02Speaker 2: We do it in different ways, so and we ultimately
- 54:05Speaker 2: meet in the same place, which like from a decision
- 54:07Speaker 2: making perspective, Matt takes a totally different route than I do,
- 54:11Speaker 2: but like after we absorb it and talk through it,
- 54:13Speaker 2: it's like we get there in a totally different way,
- 54:15Speaker 2: but it's the same decision.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Right, and we balance. It's as friends, it's hard. We
- 54:21Speaker 1: obviously talk a lot about being and like we'll have
- 54:24Speaker 1: disagreements and arguments, and because we're so close parts sometimes
- 54:27Speaker 1: to not talk about beam when we're together. But I'd
- 54:29Speaker 1: say one of the things that's unique about our relationship
- 54:32Speaker 1: and we have other amazing friends, is that we're so
- 54:35Speaker 1: direct and open and how we communicate to each other.
- 54:37Speaker 2: So we do disagree a lot. We don't always see things.
- 54:40Speaker 1: The right way, not the right way, the same way,
- 54:42Speaker 1: and well again he did arguments in a respectful way.
- 54:45Speaker 1: And then but at the same time we can be
- 54:46Speaker 1: really annoyed, like passionate about each other's opinions and things
- 54:49Speaker 1: like that, but then also like, let's just go get
- 54:51Speaker 1: a coffee, and it's not that doesn't ever really go
- 54:54Speaker 1: beyond just like we're having a business relationship and a
- 54:57Speaker 1: business discussion and then we can be friends immediately after.
- 55:00Speaker 2: I think that's unique because sometimes people.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Can't hear direct feedback, they can't have an emotional conversation
- 55:05Speaker 1: and then park it and on to the next thing.
- 55:07Speaker 5: Right, we both know that we both, like both of us,
- 55:09Speaker 5: wants the best thing for Beam, and it's coming from
- 55:11Speaker 5: a place of love for the people and the.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Company and all those things.
- 55:15Speaker 4: Where's the name Beam come from?
- 55:16Speaker 1: We ended up on Beam with the vision that we
- 55:20Speaker 1: had for wanting to build a brand. And when we
- 55:22Speaker 1: look at the space again, you see a lot of
- 55:23Speaker 1: CBD companies, as I'm sure you've seen when they slide
- 55:25Speaker 1: into DMS, they have some form of the word cannabis
- 55:29Speaker 1: in them, they have the flower on the label. They
- 55:32Speaker 1: have kind of medical sounding, technical sounding words we really
- 55:35Speaker 1: want to take, like let's us be super simple and friendly,
- 55:38Speaker 1: and we landed on beam. It just popped up and
- 55:41Speaker 1: it is like light, energy, support, stability. It's four letters,
- 55:44Speaker 1: it's super friendly, it's simple, it's a common word, reuse.
- 55:46Speaker 1: And that was really that was a story just like that.
- 55:48Speaker 1: And then there's a lot of cool plays in the word.
- 55:50Speaker 1: We could eventually use the brand, and it just kind
- 55:51Speaker 1: of connected as what we wanted the business to be.
- 55:55Speaker 4: I dig it all right. The final question, the big moment.
- 56:00Speaker 4: You have an opportunity right now to look back on
- 56:03Speaker 4: your hurdle moments, which still kind of surreal that you
- 56:08Speaker 4: share so many similarities with the struggles that you both
- 56:11Speaker 4: went through with having to leave sport in the way
- 56:14Speaker 4: that you did. You look back on that moment, those
- 56:16Speaker 4: hurdle moments, and you have an opportunity right now to
- 56:19Speaker 4: offer yourself then a piece of advice looking back on it. Now,
- 56:24Speaker 4: what do you tell yourself, Kevin kick me off, Yeah,
- 56:29Speaker 4: to keep listening to myself, because I've always been some
- 56:34Speaker 4: that thinks that like that's those moments of that's right
- 56:38Speaker 4: kind of what I said about baseball, like those four
- 56:40Speaker 4: or five years in professional baseball that like all it
- 56:42Speaker 4: was really was just one big struggle. The obstacle is
- 56:44Speaker 4: the way, right, where like, do you have these awful
- 56:46Speaker 4: moments in your life or whatever's going on, but ultimately,
- 56:48Speaker 4: like if you can just like keep your head above
- 56:50Speaker 4: water and persevere, if there's light at the end of
- 56:52Speaker 4: the tunnel, and that's where that's where like the magic
- 56:54Speaker 4: happens when you get out of those things. So to
- 56:56Speaker 4: really like embrace those things, which I've always kind of
- 57:01Speaker 4: had that perspective and I've done a good job of that,
- 57:03Speaker 4: and but just to continue it's really freaking hard, as
- 57:05Speaker 4: we all know, when you're going through those things. But
- 57:08Speaker 4: those are the times when you grow the most.
- 57:12Speaker 1: I think similarly, maybe it's putting on my own words,
- 57:15Speaker 1: but really just keep following your gut, following your intuition.
- 57:18Speaker 1: There's something cool Steve Job said, you know, you can't
- 57:22Speaker 1: connect the dots looking forward.
- 57:23Speaker 2: You can only connect and looking back.
- 57:24Speaker 1: And I like being here today in this room with
- 57:27Speaker 1: you guys, and you know, being with where it's at,
- 57:29Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, I can see how these dots
- 57:30Speaker 1: connected at the time, when you're in the thick of it,
- 57:32Speaker 1: whether it's like hard times.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Are you just kind of confused or you're not really
- 57:35Speaker 2: sure what to do?
- 57:36Speaker 1: I think, you know, I'm happy that I just I
- 57:38Speaker 1: always kept chasing my things that I thought I would
- 57:41Speaker 1: be passionate about and trusting my intuition is doing things
- 57:43Speaker 1: that I didn't know how to maybe rationalize it at
- 57:47Speaker 1: the time or you know, fully defended or say like
- 57:50Speaker 1: this is the best choice to make right now because
- 57:52Speaker 1: of X, Y and Z.
- 57:53Speaker 2: Is more just like a.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Gut and I think again, you get to certain points
- 57:56Speaker 1: and then you can look back and be like, oh, okay,
- 57:58Speaker 1: so now I can see how that all connect. And
- 58:00Speaker 1: similar to Kevin, I think maybe just said a little
- 58:01Speaker 1: bit differently, but just keep moving, keep moving. Thanks guys,
- 58:07Speaker 1: thank you, thank you.
