- 0:11we bring to your table today might add some spice to your life welcome back
- 0:17to another episode of relish this is don patterson and i am rowan miller how
- 0:22are you doing today don oh real good real good yeah real you're ready for some
- 0:26coming your way Oh, yeah.
- 0:29But let's do this one first. All right.
- 0:32Tell me about a time when you trusted God to do what was best for you.
- 0:40Do you want to see it? Sure.
- 0:46I mean, I think I'll have a big one coming up with college and trying to balance
- 0:53athletics and price and.
- 0:58Golf and academics and whatever.
- 1:04But I might think of, I'll think on this. Okay.
- 1:07I'm just with that. Are you good with that? I think we're good with that.
- 1:10Yeah, we're good with that. Yeah. I'll do a couple of them.
- 1:14I'll come up with an answer, but. Okay. Sounds good. Yeah.
- 1:19We'll start first one here. Why are church services in the morning?
- 1:23We might know, some of us might know some people that would come to church.
- 1:27They would say if it's in the afternoon or evening because they just don't like
- 1:30waking up early. Right. I agree.
- 1:32And a lot of, I think it's more tradition than anything else.
- 1:35The only indication that we would have is that from scripture,
- 1:40that is, that we, most Christians.
- 1:46Go to church on the Lord's day, which would be when Christ rose from the dead,
- 1:51which is a significant event in our Christian witness.
- 1:54And that, that resurrection happened in the morning.
- 1:58And so it's like every week we're trying to celebrate the resurrection of our
- 2:03Lord Jesus Christ and the significance of that in our lives.
- 2:09So that would be the only indications we'd have from Scripture other than convenience.
- 2:15We go to church, then we go to Sunday school, we go out to a nice dinner.
- 2:21Then we get a nice nap, and get a nice nap, and then watch football games, right?
- 2:29And then, you know, eat popcorn for supper, right? Isn't that what we do,
- 2:32folks? Yeah. Popcorn and apples.
- 2:35And so we sort of get into a routine of doing things that way. But you're right.
- 2:40There is a movement, in fact, a fairly good movement to do it of an evening.
- 2:46There are some churches that would do a Saturday evening and then a Sunday morning.
- 2:52So a contemporary service Saturday evening, a more traditional service Sunday morning.
- 2:57And then some of the mega churches are actually doing a Wednesday night service
- 3:03that would be for the believers.
- 3:07So Sunday morning would be more, bring your friend, bring your neighbor,
- 3:10maybe they're not Christian.
- 3:12And so it'd be an entry-level kind of service, a on-ramp, if you will,
- 3:16into the Christian faith.
- 3:18And so it would be visitor-friendly, Very visitor-friendly.
- 3:25Whereas Wednesday night would be that inner core of the church that has been
- 3:30believers for a long time.
- 3:32That service would have their communion. That service would have more of the
- 3:39teaching, the deep teachings of the scripture.
- 3:42And so it's not quite as visitor-friendly.
- 3:46And so some bigger churches are doing it that way.
- 3:51The important thing I think that's about your question is,
- 3:55is who are we equipped as a congregation to meet with our faith?
- 4:03I mean, there are some user-friendly congregations that, you know,
- 4:07might be a community church,
- 4:09where you might have a lot of people of different, you know,
- 4:13Armenians and Calvinists in the same pew together, because you aren't making
- 4:19theology a major deciding factor as to whether you're going to be in that church or not.
- 4:27Because a lot of community churches, maybe your community is not very big,
- 4:32and so you develop a community church atmosphere.
- 4:37So everybody who calls themselves Christian and exhibits Christianity in their lifestyle is welcome.
- 4:44Or college campus. Yeah, college campus ministries are that way.
- 4:47And so, yeah, it's a bigger net, if you will. Yeah.
- 4:52And instead of, oh, this is a Lutheran church, and this is an Armenian church,
- 4:57and this is this, and this is that, and this is that.
- 4:59And you might have six churches on the same street in the same town because
- 5:03you've got this group that wants to go and do this, and this group that wants to do that.
- 5:09That group wants hymns, and that church wants worship songs,
- 5:12and never the two shall meet.
- 5:17And that's all right too but the sunday morning piece,
- 5:24Carrie's tradition, I think it's an all right tradition because it is when Christ
- 5:31was raised from the dead.
- 5:33Yeah. So in a way, it's like we have our weekend, which would have been the
- 5:39time that Christ was on the cross.
- 5:42And then in Sunday morning, we come to church and rejoice.
- 5:46And that is a difference between the Jews who still celebrate on the Sabbath
- 5:54day, Saturday, have their Sabbath on Saturday.
- 5:58Yeah. Pretty interesting.
- 6:01Yeah. And there are some Christian groups that do Saturday as well. Yeah.
- 6:07Some do just Saturday night. Yeah. Yeah. Is Jesus still human?
- 6:15At this moment yes not at this moment okay so and you say where did you go with
- 6:22that so we'll go to uh philippians chapter 2.
- 6:32There we go,
- 6:39well let's stick our finger in philippians 2 let's go to Acts chapter 1 first.
- 6:47I should have brought my brand new Bible because all of its pages are more crispy and they turn easier.
- 6:54But in Acts chapter one and verse nine, after this, he was taken up before their
- 7:01eyes and a cloud hid him from their sight.
- 7:06And they were looking intently into the sky as he was going and suddenly the two men dressed.
- 7:12So all of a sudden, Jesus wasn't there.
- 7:17But we know as Christians that when we feel the Holy Spirit moving in our midst, Jesus is here.
- 7:25Right. Yeah. So Jesus is in that Holy Spirit.
- 7:29The human part of Jesus is not on earth anymore.
- 7:37I like the piece in Philippians 2, which sort of gives this movement, if you will.
- 7:46Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, chapter 2, verse 5, now 6,
- 7:52who being the very nature of God did not consider equality with God something
- 7:57to be grasped, but made himself nothing,
- 8:00which means that Christ in the process of becoming human emptied himself of that divinity.
- 8:09Is that what yours says? Yeah. Okay. CSB says instead he emptied himself in 7. Okay.
- 8:15Interesting. that that is exactly what it should say, taking on the very nature
- 8:22of a servant and being made in human likeness.
- 8:27And so that was a process, and we can liken that to what happened at Christmas,
- 8:33because through the Holy Spirit, Jesus, Almighty God, became flesh among us.
- 8:41And being found in appearance as a man he humbled himself and was obedient to
- 8:45death even death on the cross and that's of course.
- 8:51Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him a name that is above every name.
- 8:58And that's why I think at that point where he was lifted to heaven,
- 9:03he's at the right hand of God.
- 9:05Sort of like what Stephen says when Stephen sees him just before he dies.
- 9:13I mean, he declares that to the guys who are stoning him, that he sees Christ
- 9:18at the right hand of God. Yeah.
- 9:23That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and
- 9:29under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
- 9:36So he's a human right now?
- 9:39Not at this moment, but he was very human at the time. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 9:47Uh, I think I'm ready. I think I got my answer. Okay, cool.
- 9:51I'll read it again in case you forgot. Tell me about the time when you trusted
- 9:54God to do what was best for you.
- 9:57And I think actually, um, uh, coming on this podcast as the host was probably
- 10:03one of those times, like it would
- 10:06have been so much easier, so much more comfortable for me at the start.
- 10:10If I would have just said you know what Don I'm not too interested in hosting
- 10:16a podcast with you but I think how much I've learned and how I've been able to help.
- 10:24Maybe some of you guys out there I hope so how we've been able to,
- 10:30spread God's word to maybe a different set
- 10:33of people than we see on Sunday mornings I
- 10:36think that has been the best not only for me but
- 10:39for others also so praise the Lord yeah yeah has
- 10:43it stretched you a bit yeah it's it's
- 10:46definitely more comfortable now definitely more used
- 10:49to it I think we're been doing it for about a year maybe very close to it yes
- 10:54because uh yeah right we started November right so and we started started is
- 10:59definitely not like that so
- 11:01yeah definitely it was yeah we started in my office didn't we yeah we did,
- 11:08Yeah. Now we have this beautiful studio, you know, great stuff.
- 11:11Oh yeah. Yeah. Cool. That's a good answer. Yeah.
- 11:16And it just, you know, challenges me. There's a little bit difference in our age.
- 11:21When I think of what I was doing in high school as a senior and what I'm doing
- 11:25today, challenges me to think what you're doing in high school and what God may do with you. Yeah.
- 11:33When you get about my age, you know. Cool.
- 11:37Do you have an answer for this time that you trusted God for what was best for you? Yeah.
- 11:46Actually, probably when I came here to Kelowna Mennonite, it was,
- 11:51I mean, most churches aren't out there looking for an over 65-year-old pastor.
- 11:56And I'm serious.
- 11:59And then they said, well, we'd be really interested in you if you were 40.
- 12:04Yeah. Yeah. And so then to come on here and then to be here now,
- 12:11it's definitely, was not on my radar, but it's been great.
- 12:17Been very good. I don't think you were anticipating stepping into a lead pastor role either. No.
- 12:24No, but that's, God knows. And I was so blessed to work with Josh. That was good.
- 12:32And I enjoyed my time.
- 12:36And I still enjoy my time.
- 12:39And we are in the search process at Kelowna Mennonite.
- 12:43So if you know of a pastor who'd like to, we're not bashful about saying,
- 12:48we're ready, ready for a pastor. And we have a committee.
- 12:53Actually, we have a committee that's alive and well and working on that. Formed, yeah.
- 12:59Duly formed and commissioned to do such work. Wow. Yes. And so,
- 13:03yeah, if you know somebody, let us know.
- 13:05Yeah. That'd be great. I think you coming here was probably best for our church
- 13:09also because we would have been left without a pastor for a little while.
- 13:14So, yeah, you've seen it. It was unexpected.
- 13:18It was unexpected. And God works in mysterious ways.
- 13:22His wonders to perform. And I'm not sure that's in the Bible,
- 13:24but I quote it quite often.
- 13:27It's just amazing what God is willing and able to do when we give him permission.
- 13:35I mean, we do have to be willing to allow God to work in our life.
- 13:39And we can say, no, like you could have said no to relish.
- 13:46You could have done that. I'm glad you didn't, but you could have.
- 13:50And we always have that ability to say no.
- 13:55But we'll be blessed if we say yes. I really think so.
- 14:02And at least that's the way I've experienced it. I've been blessed more when
- 14:06I said yes than if I said no. Right.
- 14:11If kind of poking the question a little bit farther, but like we all,
- 14:18do you believe that we all would like, we all have a calling that's kind of set by God? I do. I do.
- 14:26And I think that calling, there's two pieces to it.
- 14:33So I think God has, in the midst of his calling, has done some specific equipping of us as individuals.
- 14:42And so even in our DNA, we will have certain things that reflect that call.
- 14:49And then as we yield to God's hand working in our lives, we're able to do that to the utmost.
- 15:00It's something then that we can live into because it won't be using those gifts
- 15:06and abilities just for our own benefit.
- 15:09God's going to use it for others and for the benefit of his kingdom.
- 15:15That's why we pray in the Lord's prayer, Thy will be done, thy kingdom come,
- 15:21thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
- 15:25Because this is not just about you, and it's not just about me.
- 15:29This Christianity thing is,
- 15:31we need to yield our lives in such a way that God can use us in any way.
- 15:39In addition, he may also equip us where we don't think we're equipped. Right.
- 15:50So we may have certain latent abilities. I mean, people look at me and think
- 15:54I'm an administrator and that I've always been an administrator and that I'm
- 15:58just good at administration. It's in my DNA.
- 16:00I just do it. My dad would be. My dad would have been a good administrator.
- 16:05But my administrative gifts actually come from my wife, Charlene.
- 16:09Okay. Because she has those gifts.
- 16:13I watched her and over the years she nudged me, God bless her,
- 16:17and I then learned those gifts.
- 16:21Right. And they've helped.
- 16:23But in reality, that wasn't my original DNA. I'm sort of a fly by the seat of my pants kind of guy.
- 16:30And I've worn out gobs of britches that way.
- 16:33The uh the the thing that is possible is the fact that now i'm in a mentoring
- 16:40role in several different circles and that's not someplace i've ever been before okay and uh,
- 16:50sometimes that's appreciated yeah.
- 16:56So, yeah, those things that sometimes God calls you to that you probably would
- 17:06have said no to out of your own flesh, but somehow,
- 17:11well, like in the previous episode that was done on faith, sometimes it's that
- 17:15faith piece that nudges us hard enough,
- 17:19whoops us, if you will, to do something that we, I've never done anything like that before.
- 17:26Like, get on a podcast. Right.
- 17:30Sharing your testimony. Sharing your testimony. Sharing your testimony in Guatemala
- 17:34on a mission trip in a different language. There you go. Yeah.
- 17:38And you've never done that before until this last summer. That was last spring, yeah. Yeah.
- 17:43Service and learning term at Hillcrest. Right.
- 17:46Yeah. S-L-T. Oh, S-A-L-T. Salt. Oh, yeah. That's good on hamburgers too.
- 17:53See, that's not something. you would normally do. Right.
- 17:58But, oh, and you don't usually get on stage.
- 18:02Right. Yeah. Not much. But you've been on stage at Hillcrest in this venue.
- 18:08Yeah. And you've been all right. You didn't pass out or anything.
- 18:12And so God has that way, not only to use the DNA that how he built you originally,
- 18:19not only to use the faith that you've developed over time in your relationship with him, But also,
- 18:27by that faith and what he's already done in your life, he may move you to another
- 18:32spot, totally, that is out of your comfort zone because it serves his kingdom. Yeah.
- 18:42Yeah. What was the question again? It's about a calling. If we have one. Do we have a calling?
- 18:48Yeah, I do think we do. Is it, would it be like, is it possible to say no or
- 18:54like reject God's? Oh my. Yes, it is.
- 18:58And if you want to know what causes trouble in churches, I'll tell you. All right.
- 19:05What causes trouble in churches more often than not. And I've seen this more
- 19:10than once. I've seen it a lot more than once.
- 19:12Are individuals who in their heart knew they were called by God to be a leader, maybe even a pastor.
- 19:20And they denied that calling when God gave it.
- 19:24And so back in their minds, they have this affirmation of God that they should have been a preacher.
- 19:32And they didn't, oh, preachers don't make any money.
- 19:36You got to move from time to time and all this thing. And so they deny that and don't do it.
- 19:44And I found that those are the most cantankerous people in any given church
- 19:48that I've ever pastored or, and I probably see it more often now that I'm doing
- 19:53more consulting and those kind of things in congregations.
- 19:59Because then you see those people get on an elder board or something like that or church council.
- 20:04And they think that they always think they know better than the pastor.
- 20:07They always think they know better than the pastor because now they've got life experience.
- 20:15On top of that inner call that they, of course, denied. Right.
- 20:20Oh, if you want to know somebody that'll make a trouble on a committee,
- 20:24those are the individuals that'll do that.
- 20:27Yeah. And it's sad because they could have walked a different way.
- 20:32But it affects your faith. It affects your faith. It affects your way of thinking
- 20:37if you've been called and denied the call.
- 20:40And I just say that as a caution to any of you young people who are feeling any nudge to ministry.
- 20:47If the Holy Spirit's gotten a hold of you, don't dismiss it, please.
- 20:51Take it really serious. Maybe not jump into it with both feet right away,
- 20:55but get a mentor, get someone to walk beside you in the midst of discovering
- 20:59that call and looking it over and saying, wow.
- 21:06Yeah would you think like or would you say that if if God truly wanted it like
- 21:13he would keep pursuing pursuing actually for it some of them I think have been
- 21:18pursued several times okay,
- 21:21and so ultimately he'll because of our free will he'll he'll still leave it
- 21:28up to us but he does he'll God bless him God bless God bless God yeah,
- 21:34he's not going to take us where we're not willing to go yeah and that's,
- 21:40that's nice I guess,
- 21:44But I think I would nudge anybody who's out in the audience and had that nudge
- 21:50before that they've denied.
- 21:541 John 1 says, if you confess your sins, he's faithful and just and will forgive
- 22:01your sins and cleanse you from all righteousness.
- 22:03You know, any mistake is that way.
- 22:07Take care of it.
- 22:10If sin is a deviation, a twist, if you will, in our nature and our will,
- 22:20that's a twist. Saying no to God is a twist.
- 22:24It's sin. Let's just be frank about it.
- 22:29If we have done that, let's go to God, find cleansing and forgiveness for it.
- 22:34Put it in the past, move on. And see what God might call you to right now.
- 22:40I don't think God puts us away. I mean, I guess I'm evidence they don't put you away.
- 22:47I think God still wants to use all of us in his kingdom. And there's definitely a need.
- 22:54There'll never not be a need. Right, exactly. Yeah.
- 22:59I'm just glad the church isn't under persecution because we're not developing
- 23:03leaders fast enough to equip churches.
- 23:07I mean, if we were being persecuted and like they are in Nigeria.
- 23:12Nemi was here a couple of weeks ago and shared how it's the pastor that gets
- 23:16knocked off first in Nigeria.
- 23:19And then they kill the young kids, the young guys that are 10 to 15.
- 23:27So that their goal is to eliminate the next generation.
- 23:33Not only spiritually, by killing the spiritual leader of the congregation,
- 23:37but by killing in the congregation all the young boys who will be the fathers in the next 15, 20 years.
- 23:45And, boy, that's genocide. That's a really focused genocide.
- 23:53And if any of you want to get and support that ministry that NEMI is part of,
- 23:59it's Anabaptist Peace Center.
- 24:01And it's centered in California.
- 24:04And Ministers has its work in Nigeria, in the Josh, G-O-S area of Nigeria.
- 24:14Right, G-O-S? Yes, G-O-S. G-O-S. I think that's the name of the town.
- 24:20It's very simple. Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:23All right. Cool. Well, thanks for that, Don.
- 24:28Don't be saying no to God's calling for you. Embrace it. No,
- 24:33it gets you in a lot of trouble. Yeah. Thank you guys for listening.
- 24:36Share it with somebody. Maybe they need to hear that there's a calling for them that God has. Right.
- 24:43Especially young people. Right. Let them know. Yeah. Thank you guys for joining
- 24:47us and we'll see you next time. Lord willing.
- 24:51Thank you for joining us for this podcast. Feel free to become part of this
- 24:55ministry by sharing it with others.
- 24:56Our goal is to help each other grow deeper in our understanding of who God is
- 25:00and is calling to us in our daily lives.
- 25:02Thank you again for joining us and may God bless your day.
