- 0:28Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast. And it's the
- 0:31Speaker 1: end of the line. The Super Bowl preview between the
- 0:35Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, the game that
- 0:39Speaker 1: we've all been waiting for. And I know you Seattle
- 0:42Speaker 1: twelve's have been waiting for this for far too long.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It's revenge time, a revenge tour. I know New England,
- 0:49Speaker 1: y'all feel good. You're like Drake May MVP, Canaday MVP MVP. Nah,
- 0:55Speaker 1: It's it's over, whit. This is ending this week, well
- 0:59Speaker 1: next week on Sunday. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I
- 1:03Speaker 1: know we got to wait to get through the whole preview,
- 1:05Speaker 1: but y'all know how I feel about this one. I'm
- 1:07Speaker 1: incredibly biased, but the biasness is rooted in fact, in structure.
- 1:13Speaker 1: This team is good, Mitchell, they aren't great.
- 1:16Speaker 2: They've earned the right to be here, Richard, and you
- 1:19Speaker 2: called it from the onset of this season. This Seattle
- 1:22Speaker 2: Seahawks team has shocked a lot of people, but I
- 1:25Speaker 2: don't know if they necessarily shocked you. And kudos to you,
- 1:28Speaker 2: my friend, Kudos to you. You said the energy in
- 1:30Speaker 2: that building was different in training camp. And here we
- 1:33Speaker 2: are on the brink of Super Bowl Week and the
- 1:36Speaker 2: Seattle Seahawks are in Santa Clara ready to strap them up.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Richard.
- 1:41Speaker 2: There's gonna be a lot of storylines going into this game,
- 1:45Speaker 2: but I think the biggest one is how well Seattle's
- 1:49Speaker 2: defense can contain Drake may Listen. I know the guy's young.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I know he's you know, he's come onto the scene
- 1:57Speaker 2: here pretty darn quick, and he's taken the lead by storm.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Whether or not he wins the MVP this year, which
- 2:02Speaker 2: I don't think he will, but he's he's earned the
- 2:04Speaker 2: right to be in that discussion. He's elevated this new
- 2:07Speaker 2: England Patriots team from the depths of this league. And
- 2:11Speaker 2: credit to him and Mike Vrabel, Richard, I know you're
- 2:14Speaker 2: high on the Seattle Seahawks defense. But what challenges do
- 2:18Speaker 2: you see Drake May presenting to the Seattle Seahawk Juggernaut defense.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Well, we can get into it. Drake May presents a
- 2:28Speaker 1: plethora of issues for the Seattle Seahawks. He's mobile, he's
- 2:34Speaker 1: got one hundred and forty one yards on the ground,
- 2:37Speaker 1: had sixty six against the Denver Broncos. I mean, he
- 2:41Speaker 1: had sixty five against the Denver Broncos, sixty six in
- 2:44Speaker 1: the wild card matchup against the Chargers, and those were
- 2:47Speaker 1: pivotal plays, critical plays when things broke down. He used
- 2:51Speaker 1: his legs and really flipped the field in a lot
- 2:53Speaker 1: of those situations. So the Seattle Seahawks are going to
- 2:56Speaker 1: have to be wary of that. This is a fast,
- 2:59Speaker 1: swarming d So I know that Mike McDonald is gonna
- 3:02Speaker 1: try to get him to speed up his clock. There's
- 3:04Speaker 1: a reason Mike McDonald has had so much success against
- 3:09Speaker 1: these young young quarterbacks. Against quarterbacks under twenty three years old,
- 3:13Speaker 1: Mike McDonald is six to zero. The quarterbacks have thrown
- 3:17Speaker 1: one touchdown and they've thrown eight intersection sceptions and been
- 3:21Speaker 1: sacked twenty two times. His looks are complex. They just
- 3:25Speaker 1: make your pause just long enough to diagnose, Hey, is
- 3:28Speaker 1: it what I thought it was or is it something else?
- 3:30Speaker 1: He does a fantastic job manipulating the eyes, manipulating what
- 3:35Speaker 1: you expect to see. But Josh McDaniels is gonna do
- 3:39Speaker 1: a good job trying to prepare him for some of
- 3:41Speaker 1: these looks. But again, this is a young quarterback who's
- 3:44Speaker 1: played at a really high level. But in this playoffs,
- 3:47Speaker 1: you got to give him a lot of credit. He's
- 3:48Speaker 1: gone through some of the toughest defenses you're gonna see
- 3:52Speaker 1: in this National Football League. He struggled against the Chargers
- 3:56Speaker 1: in that game, especially early on. That game was three
- 3:58Speaker 1: to six for a long time, and then you know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: things start snowballing. Houston Texans gave him all he could handle,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and of course everybody knows how CJ. Stroud struggled in
- 4:08Speaker 1: that game, a lot of turnovers, the game got out
- 4:11Speaker 1: of hand. Drake May made the plays necessary first team
- 4:14Speaker 1: to win. And then you get to the Denver game.
- 4:15Speaker 1: He only had eighty six yards pass and he almost
- 4:17Speaker 1: ran for as many yards as he passed for in
- 4:20Speaker 1: that game, and we all know the elements were an issue,
- 4:22Speaker 1: the snow and all that, but there's not a huge,
- 4:27Speaker 1: like big time go to receiver in this game for
- 4:30Speaker 1: the New England Patriots. Now, Stefan Diggs is a household name,
- 4:33Speaker 1: a guy who has had a lot of success in
- 4:34Speaker 1: this league, who can get you a first down when
- 4:37Speaker 1: you needed. Kayshawn Booty made a huge play in that
- 4:41Speaker 1: Houston Texans game against one of the best corners in
- 4:43Speaker 1: the National Football League, First team All Pro Derek Stingley,
- 4:46Speaker 1: went up top one handed in the end zone. Showed Hey,
- 4:50Speaker 1: regardless of circumstances, regardless of the elements. I'm a big
- 4:53Speaker 1: time player. And his draft stock fell because of some
- 4:56Speaker 1: off the field issues, some things that don't need to
- 4:58Speaker 1: be talked about. But he's showing that he can be
- 5:02Speaker 1: a big time factor in this league and I think
- 5:04Speaker 1: he's their best receiver and there's no question about that.
- 5:06Speaker 1: But again, this game that Mike McDonald employs, you don't
- 5:13Speaker 1: necessarily need a guy in that way. The pressure will
- 5:16Speaker 1: get them, the looks will get them. But they have
- 5:18Speaker 1: great corners at Tarik wooland if you look at Tarik
- 5:21Speaker 1: wooland Josh Joe and Devin Witherspoon, those three corners have
- 5:26Speaker 1: allowed I think the least yards per catch and per
- 5:30Speaker 1: reception in the National Football League. Uh, And they're all
- 5:33Speaker 1: on the field, and Mike McDonald keeps them all on
- 5:35Speaker 1: the field. At the same time. You already know Nick
- 5:37Speaker 1: Emmon Wore's gonna factor into his game. He may be
- 5:40Speaker 1: garden Booty. He may be garden Trevion Hendrickson, he may
- 5:43Speaker 1: be garden Ormandre Stevenson, he may be gardening Hunter Henry.
- 5:47Speaker 1: He could be anywhere. He may be blitzing. He may
- 5:49Speaker 1: be at de tackle. You never know where you're gonna
- 5:51Speaker 1: find Nick min Warr. It's like where's Waldough, Like where
- 5:54Speaker 1: you find him? The action usually will be though Mitchell.
- 5:57Speaker 1: But I think I just I assume that Drake may
- 6:04Speaker 1: will struggle in this game. Not that he won't be
- 6:07Speaker 1: he not that he won't be accurate, not that he
- 6:09Speaker 1: won't be effective, but I expect him to struggle. He
- 6:12Speaker 1: struggled in a lot of these games, especially early on.
- 6:14Speaker 1: But this the difference between these guys and the other
- 6:17Speaker 1: guys is this defensive line will come in waves. There's
- 6:21Speaker 1: gonna be a lot of guys rotating in there. They're
- 6:23Speaker 1: not gonna get tired and This offensive line has already
- 6:25Speaker 1: allowed him to be sacked fifteen times. In these playoffs.
- 6:28Speaker 1: He got sacked five times each game, and he's been
- 6:30Speaker 1: beaten up. He's questionable in this game. Obviously he's gonna play.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Everybody's questionable. Everybody would have que next to their name
- 6:35Speaker 1: is playing. But there's a reason he's beat up. It's
- 6:38Speaker 1: because of this offensive line. And I know Mike McDonald
- 6:41Speaker 1: will make it hard for him again in this game.
- 6:43Speaker 1: They run the ball pretty well, but this is the
- 6:46Speaker 1: number one team against a run in the Seattle Seahawks.
- 6:49Speaker 1: They're not gonna allow them to run the ball. They're
- 6:50Speaker 1: gonna make Drake May beat them. And he is he
- 6:53Speaker 1: gonna have enough time to operate in the way he
- 6:55Speaker 1: wants to. Is he gonna be able to take advantage
- 6:57Speaker 1: of the matchups? I know the pitcher are like, look
- 7:00Speaker 1: what Stafford did? I think in this game, you're gonna
- 7:03Speaker 1: see the difference between Matthew Stafford and your young Drake
- 7:05Speaker 1: May not that Drake May won't eventually get to where
- 7:08Speaker 1: Stafford is, but he does not see the game as
- 7:10Speaker 1: well as Matthew Stafford does. I'm sorry Patriots fans if
- 7:14Speaker 1: that's news to you, But that's gonna be news. I
- 7:18Speaker 1: know you want the young kid to be MVP, and
- 7:20Speaker 1: I'm sure he's gonna have an MVP in his future.
- 7:22Speaker 1: It's not gonna be this year. I'd be very surprised
- 7:24Speaker 1: if they gave it to him this year. I'd be
- 7:25Speaker 1: very disappointing because of the season that Matthew Stafford has had.
- 7:28Speaker 1: But if you want to see the clear difference between
- 7:31Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford and Drake May, you will watch how they
- 7:33Speaker 1: play these two games. You just watch Matthew Stafford play
- 7:36Speaker 1: a phenomenal game against the Seattle Seahawks. I mean twice
- 7:39Speaker 1: in the last what month, played really great games. One
- 7:41Speaker 1: time he had. Last game he had three seventy four.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I think in the game before that he had four
- 7:46Speaker 1: to fifty seven. That does not happen often against the
- 7:48Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks defense. Now you're gonna get to watch your
- 7:51Speaker 1: your pride and joy Drake May against the same defense
- 7:55Speaker 1: in great conditions. They're gonna be in Santa Clara, California.
- 7:58Speaker 1: It's not gonna be snow, it's not gonna be rain,
- 8:00Speaker 1: it's not gonna be win, it's not gonna be elements,
- 8:02Speaker 1: And you're going against a really great defense, and you're
- 8:04Speaker 1: gonna see it's easier said than done throwing the football
- 8:07Speaker 1: against his defense. But I know Josh McDaniels and Mike
- 8:12Speaker 1: Rabel will have a great plan for him. Can they
- 8:15Speaker 1: execute We shall see. On the flip side of that,
- 8:19Speaker 1: what can this Patriots defense do? They do a lot
- 8:22Speaker 1: of things well. They do a lot of things well.
- 8:25Speaker 1: They play a lot of men coverage in the back end.
- 8:27Speaker 1: When they play zone, they do a great job of
- 8:29Speaker 1: disguising it. They got a big time playmaker and Marcus Jones,
- 8:32Speaker 1: whether it's in a special teams, pump return game, kick
- 8:35Speaker 1: return game, whatever it is, if he gets his hands
- 8:37Speaker 1: on the football with the interception, he had a pick
- 8:39Speaker 1: six against the Houston Texans. Where is the best athlete
- 8:42Speaker 1: on the field, And there's no question, there's no debate
- 8:44Speaker 1: about that. And then you you talk about Christian Gonzalez,
- 8:49Speaker 1: who I think is the best player on that defense.
- 8:51Speaker 1: And then Carlton Davis, a guy who plays the game
- 8:54Speaker 1: at a very high level and a very underrated player
- 8:58Speaker 1: in this defense. I believe he had two interceptions in
- 9:01Speaker 1: the game against two interceptions in a game against Houston
- 9:07Speaker 1: that were critical plays and one of them was on
- 9:09Speaker 1: a short route. He just plays the game the right way.
- 9:11Speaker 1: He's where he's supposed to be. He's a perfect hand
- 9:13Speaker 1: and glove fit for this game and what Mike Rabels
- 9:15Speaker 1: wants to do. But it's it's Milton Williams and Christian
- 9:19Speaker 1: Barmore that are the lynch pins in this defense. If
- 9:22Speaker 1: you cannot move them, you will not run the ball
- 9:25Speaker 1: against this team. And then you got clay Von Chase on,
- 9:28Speaker 1: a guy who who you know, was a high round
- 9:30Speaker 1: draft pick, a very high draft pick who didn't necessarily
- 9:33Speaker 1: work out, and I think it was Jacksonville. But he
- 9:36Speaker 1: comes here and he just fits with Mike Rabel's It's
- 9:39Speaker 1: like it's symbiosis. These guys fit what they're trying to do.
- 9:43Speaker 1: He shows his players a lot of love and a
- 9:44Speaker 1: lot of respect, and there's so much, so much care
- 9:48Speaker 1: in that building. You could see the respect and love
- 9:51Speaker 1: that he has for his players and how inspiring that
- 9:53Speaker 1: is to them. Those guys go out there and push
- 9:55Speaker 1: it to the limits, get everything they can out for
- 9:58Speaker 1: their coach. And I feel like the same way for
- 9:59Speaker 1: the seatle the Seahawks. But I just feel like the
- 10:02Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks are the better team in this game. I
- 10:05Speaker 1: do believe. I don't. There's no accident that in the
- 10:07Speaker 1: New England Patriots are here. They're here because they have
- 10:10Speaker 1: earned it. They now did they run into fortuitive circumstances
- 10:14Speaker 1: in some respects, no question about it. But hey, you
- 10:17Speaker 1: play who's in front of you. Hey they could they
- 10:19Speaker 1: have beaten bow Knicks maybe, but they barely beat Jared Stidham,
- 10:24Speaker 1: So could that have gone different if bo Nicks plays? Maybe?
- 10:28Speaker 1: But who cares if if was a fifth you know
- 10:30Speaker 1: the rest. They have to compete against Sam Donald, who's
- 10:36Speaker 1: playing some of the best football of his life. He
- 10:39Speaker 1: played against the Rams, and that was the opponent. I
- 10:43Speaker 1: think most skeptics and critics would have said, hey, that's
- 10:45Speaker 1: the team he doesn't want to see. If the Rams
- 10:47Speaker 1: would have lost Chicago and Sam Donald would have would
- 10:50Speaker 1: have played a great game against Chicago, everybody had been like,
- 10:52Speaker 1: oh man, he got lucky the Rams didn't show up.
- 10:54Speaker 1: But he got lucky the Rams didn't win. But the
- 10:57Speaker 1: fact that he had to go against the MVP of
- 11:00Speaker 1: the league this year, which I'm assuming in Matthew Stafford,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and Matthew played a fantastic game go against Chris Shula,
- 11:07Speaker 1: who he struggled against not only in the in the
- 11:10Speaker 1: game in LA this season, but last season in the
- 11:13Speaker 1: playoffs where he was sacked nine times and pretty much
- 11:16Speaker 1: rode his ticket out of Minnesota because of that game,
- 11:19Speaker 1: because they said he could not handle the pressure. So
- 11:22Speaker 1: to be forced to face that team in an NFC
- 11:25Speaker 1: championship game with the season on the line and to
- 11:28Speaker 1: play at the level and standard that he played at
- 11:32Speaker 1: for him to compete, be accurate and deliver it with
- 11:35Speaker 1: the football. Threw for over three hundred yards, hitting Jackson,
- 11:38Speaker 1: Smith and Jig, but he gave the ball to everybody
- 11:40Speaker 1: who needed I started the game off with a bomb
- 11:42Speaker 1: to Rashid Shahit Rashid Schaheit's first go route. I think
- 11:46Speaker 1: they've thrown to him since since he's gotten here, and
- 11:49Speaker 1: it was it was a completion early in the game.
- 11:50Speaker 1: They got the look that they wanted. He put it
- 11:53Speaker 1: up for his guy to make a play. Rashid Shaheed
- 11:55Speaker 1: ran under it. Huge play in the ball game, and
- 11:57Speaker 1: that was early on, letting him know, hey, it's not
- 11:59Speaker 1: that kind of game. It's not gonna be. Then I
- 12:01Speaker 1: think they're gonna do the same thing in this game
- 12:03Speaker 1: with the New England Patriots. They're gonna set the tone
- 12:05Speaker 1: early and say, hey, we know you guys are excited.
- 12:08Speaker 1: We know what you think of this quarterback and you think,
- 12:11Speaker 1: oh man, we can rattle him. I think he's gonna
- 12:14Speaker 1: go out there and show him it's a different guy.
- 12:17Speaker 1: It's not that kind of day.
- 12:18Speaker 2: This resurgence from Sam Darnald, It's gonna be a conversation
- 12:21Speaker 2: all week. You know, he finally has found his footing
- 12:25Speaker 2: in Seattle. I mean, he had a heck of a
- 12:27Speaker 2: season last year with Minnesota. Obviously they made a mistake
- 12:30Speaker 2: in letting him go. Is it safe to say that
- 12:32Speaker 2: Sam Darnold has proven that he is a legitimate franchise
- 12:35Speaker 2: quarterback in the NFL with his showing this season with
- 12:38Speaker 2: the Seattle Seahawks.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yes. I think the simple answer is yes, Sam Donald
- 12:43Speaker 1: is proven he's a franchise quarterback. He's also proven that
- 12:47Speaker 1: sometimes circumstances matter. I can't say sometimes circumstances matter all
- 12:53Speaker 1: the time. And what would have happened if he was
- 12:56Speaker 1: put in better in a better position early on in
- 12:58Speaker 1: his career with one of the he's offensive coordinators who
- 13:01Speaker 1: do develop schemes and quarterbacks better than others. Would he
- 13:04Speaker 1: have had success earlier if he was surrounded by a
- 13:07Speaker 1: little bit more talent early in his career, could things
- 13:09Speaker 1: have gone differently? I believe so. But I love the
- 13:12Speaker 1: attitude and approach that Sam Darnold has with these things.
- 13:15Speaker 1: He's like, hey, I don't I don't have a bad
- 13:17Speaker 1: word to say about the Jets. I don't have a
- 13:19Speaker 1: bad word to say about the Carolina Panthers any of
- 13:21Speaker 1: those teams. Regardless of how things went, it was all
- 13:24Speaker 1: part of my journey, all part of the things that
- 13:26Speaker 1: got me to the position i'm in to have the
- 13:28Speaker 1: success I'm having, And it's a blessing and I love that.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I love that for him, I love that for his family.
- 13:33Speaker 1: He's obviously been raised right. But I think this is
- 13:37Speaker 1: a lesson in a in a real a message to
- 13:43Speaker 1: general managers out there that hey, offensive staffs matter, quarterback
- 13:50Speaker 1: development matters. You're not getting always getting sometimes you're getting clay,
- 13:56Speaker 1: you're not getting a finished product. And I think sometimes
- 13:59Speaker 1: they get lazy and say, hey, we're getting a number
- 14:01Speaker 1: one pick, We're gonna have a guy. We don't need
- 14:03Speaker 1: to coach him. We just need to put a playbook
- 14:05Speaker 1: in front of him and let him work. No, like,
- 14:07Speaker 1: there has to be work on both sides. There still
- 14:10Speaker 1: has to be coaching and teaching, and I think sometimes
- 14:12Speaker 1: teams get lazy in that respect, and that's why you
- 14:15Speaker 1: have the same teams over and over that have success
- 14:19Speaker 1: in this league. You look at the Rams and whoever McVeigh,
- 14:23Speaker 1: Shanahan tree, whatever falls off that tree. Quarterbacks go there
- 14:27Speaker 1: to have success. You talk about Kevin O'Connell, the quarterback Whisper.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Quarterbacks go there, they develop, they have success other places.
- 14:34Speaker 1: It's almost like they're going to school. It's going to
- 14:37Speaker 1: quarterback school and they're learning, Hey, this is how you
- 14:41Speaker 1: become a great NFL quarterback. This is the progression you
- 14:44Speaker 1: go through. This is and once you give them a
- 14:47Speaker 1: steady foundation, people can grow and build off of that.
- 14:50Speaker 1: But sometimes when your foundation is saying, it's hard to
- 14:52Speaker 1: build off of it. So I think Sam Darnold is
- 14:56Speaker 1: right where he needs to be. I think he's going
- 14:58Speaker 1: to be a franchise quarterback for the Seattle Sea for
- 15:00Speaker 1: a very long time. And this is the beginning of
- 15:02Speaker 1: a beautiful partnership for both sides.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And to that point, Richard credit to Clint Kubiak and
- 15:07Speaker 2: the job he's been able to do. I think the
- 15:10Speaker 2: issue with a lot of coaches. You know, some coaches
- 15:12Speaker 2: are stubborn and they want certain guys to fit in
- 15:15Speaker 2: their scheme. Clint Kubiak has done an exceptional job of
- 15:19Speaker 2: seeing the players that he has from a personnel standpoint,
- 15:21Speaker 2: in building his offense around that. I'm assuming he's in
- 15:25Speaker 2: line to get this Raiders job. That's what the rumors
- 15:27Speaker 2: are and he has certainly earned it. That being said,
- 15:31Speaker 2: the pieces that are in play here are the likes
- 15:33Speaker 2: of Jackson Smith and Jigba, and credit to John Schneider
- 15:36Speaker 2: for realizing that they have the guy in house that
- 15:40Speaker 2: can take them to the next level. They moved off
- 15:42Speaker 2: to DK Metcalf and they put all attention on JSN.
- 15:46Speaker 2: They brought in a vet to help him in, Cooper Cupp,
- 15:49Speaker 2: who has thrived in this offseason as well. He's bringing
- 15:51Speaker 2: that veteran experience. He's won a Super Bowl. Richard JSN,
- 15:56Speaker 2: this is really his first rodeo. And I know when
- 15:59Speaker 2: you were young and twenty thirteen came around, you guys
- 16:03Speaker 2: going to that Super Bowl. Talk to me about you know,
- 16:05Speaker 2: the nerves that are are there any nerves for a
- 16:08Speaker 2: guy like him? He seems so poised. What's different about
- 16:11Speaker 2: this game for a young player.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I can't speak for every player because every player is
- 16:17Speaker 1: different and unique. But you've, this is an old saying,
- 16:22Speaker 1: act like you've been there before, and you're nervous before.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Every great player I know is nervous before every game
- 16:28Speaker 1: they play because the expectation and the standard for yourself
- 16:32Speaker 1: is so high, and you're going out there not It's
- 16:36Speaker 1: not about disappointing outside people. It's more about not disappointing
- 16:40Speaker 1: yourself and living up to your own standard. And sometimes
- 16:42Speaker 1: even you walk away disappointed in a game where everybody
- 16:45Speaker 1: in the outside world will be like, man, that was
- 16:47Speaker 1: a great game. You played your butt off, but there
- 16:49Speaker 1: were three or four mistakes that you were chasing in
- 16:51Speaker 1: that game that really you felt like, Hey, I let
- 16:54Speaker 1: myself down today. I didn't have this play, I dropped
- 16:56Speaker 1: that pass there, And sometimes you can't get it. And
- 16:58Speaker 1: then there are other times where you run into a
- 17:00Speaker 1: game where you felt like, hey, I achieved the goals
- 17:03Speaker 1: that I came into this game with. I fought my
- 17:06Speaker 1: butt off, it didn't go exactly how I wanted it. To,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but it's fine. I think he's gonna be when you
- 17:11Speaker 1: get to this point in the season, you're not walking
- 17:13Speaker 1: to the super Bowl and trying to make stuff up.
- 17:17Speaker 1: He knows what he's done. He has a tremendous amount
- 17:20Speaker 1: of confidence built in himself, and that confidence is built
- 17:23Speaker 1: off of the work ethic and the foundation that he
- 17:26Speaker 1: said it's not luck. Every game he showed up in
- 17:31Speaker 1: a big way and executed and helped this team get
- 17:34Speaker 1: to this position. So I don't think he's nervous. I
- 17:37Speaker 1: think his teammates believe in him. Obviously, his quarterback believes
- 17:40Speaker 1: in him because he's earned this right. That's the difference
- 17:44Speaker 1: between what people going in you're nervous and you're like, hey,
- 17:47Speaker 1: am I gonna do well? Yes, I'm gonna do well
- 17:49Speaker 1: because I earned this right to do well. I practice hard,
- 17:52Speaker 1: I do things the right way. I put the work in.
- 17:55Speaker 1: It's not luck that I've gotten here. It's consistency, it's dedication,
- 17:59Speaker 1: and that's why it's gonna work out. This is this
- 18:02Speaker 1: has been already written, Mitchell. It's already written. Sometimes you
- 18:05Speaker 1: put the work in and everything works out, and sometimes
- 18:09Speaker 1: people throw the ball at the one yard land it
- 18:11Speaker 1: doesn't work out, but hopefully, oh there, Richard, the hopefully
- 18:16Speaker 1: you know, outside of something crazy like that happening, and
- 18:19Speaker 1: it works out.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Listen, you already broke down this Patriots roster. They've got
- 18:24Speaker 2: a slew of cornerbacks they can throw at JSN, one
- 18:27Speaker 2: being Christian Gonzalez, and you touched on this guy was
- 18:31Speaker 2: a stud coming out of Oregon. Obviously battled a few
- 18:34Speaker 2: injury issues early in his career, but now he's kind
- 18:36Speaker 2: of found his level as well. He had a huge
- 18:38Speaker 2: pick against Denver to seal that game. What do you
- 18:41Speaker 2: make of his game? And how do you go into
- 18:43Speaker 2: this game knowing you're going to be matched up against
- 18:46Speaker 2: one of the premier wide receivers in this in this league,
- 18:48Speaker 2: in JSN.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I don't think it bothers him. I don't. I don't
- 18:53Speaker 1: think they think that way. I don't think Clink Kubiak
- 18:56Speaker 1: thinks that way. It's very very difficul to isolate and
- 19:02Speaker 1: lock in on Jackson Smith and Jig, but he's and
- 19:04Speaker 1: if they do, if they say, hey, this is gonna
- 19:06Speaker 1: be a game, we're gonna follow you with Christian Gonzalez,
- 19:09Speaker 1: understand this. Clint Kubiak is gonna put him in the blender,
- 19:12Speaker 1: bring him to the locker room, send him to the backfield.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I mean, he's gonna be everywhere with him. He's gonna
- 19:18Speaker 1: he's gonna be in positions he's unfamiliar with. And once
- 19:21Speaker 1: you can get a corner and positions you're unfamiliar with,
- 19:24Speaker 1: you start to force them to get involved in a
- 19:26Speaker 1: run game. Hey, motion Jackson Smith and Jigba into the backfield.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Now run the football. Now, Christian Zales, figure out which
- 19:33Speaker 1: gap you got? Figure out what's your run responsibility? Hey
- 19:36Speaker 1: motion him into the backfield. You got him, Christian Zales. Perfect.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Now let's snap it and win the ball snapped? Which way?
- 19:42Speaker 1: Did which way did he go? Did he go left
- 19:44Speaker 1: or did he go right? Can you see past the
- 19:46Speaker 1: line of scrimmags? So I don't think they'll play that
- 19:48Speaker 1: game with him, especially as much as Clint Kubiak motions
- 19:52Speaker 1: Jackson Smith and jig But it'd be a difficult matchup
- 19:56Speaker 1: to say, Hey, we're gonna be man and man coverage,
- 19:58Speaker 1: and if they can give Sam those kind of identifiers,
- 20:02Speaker 1: you're gonna allow him to shred this defense. And so
- 20:05Speaker 1: I don't think they'll play that game. Maybe they will.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Maybe they just say, hey, Christian Zalez, he can do
- 20:09Speaker 1: it from anywhere, he can guard him from anywhere, and
- 20:11Speaker 1: we feel comfortable with it. And if he if he
- 20:15Speaker 1: stops him, and he has success and as an incredible player,
- 20:18Speaker 1: and you tip your cap off to him. But that's
- 20:21Speaker 1: a tough position to be in all game long to say, hey,
- 20:24Speaker 1: we're gonna follow him, and I'm going to have to
- 20:27Speaker 1: navigate all these things. It was just like the play
- 20:29Speaker 1: against the Rams where Kyen Williams sprung free and everybody
- 20:34Speaker 1: was like, what happened on that play? What happened to
- 20:36Speaker 1: the linebacker? And it was obvious Pook and the cool
- 20:38Speaker 1: came and picked off the linebacker on that play and
- 20:42Speaker 1: freed up Kyern Williams. Because it's difficult to play man
- 20:45Speaker 1: coverage when you can do that as an offensive player,
- 20:47Speaker 1: if you can run guys bodies into somebody and then
- 20:51Speaker 1: run the guy he's supposed to be covering the opposite way,
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's very difficult to cover that. And so if you
- 20:57Speaker 1: have Christian Gonzalez in those situations, you run into too
- 20:59Speaker 1: many scenarios where your best players being put in compromised positions.
- 21:03Speaker 1: And I don't think the Patriots are going to play
- 21:04Speaker 1: that game. I know Mike Brabel's smart enough to understand
- 21:07Speaker 1: that that's what the takes is.
- 21:09Speaker 2: You talked about it, and we've seen a little bit
- 21:11Speaker 2: of it this offseason or this postseason. Rather, the Seahawks
- 21:15Speaker 2: love lining JSN up in the backfield, and I know
- 21:18Speaker 2: it's given defenses fits. It seems like they're targeting him
- 21:21Speaker 2: every single time they line him up in the backfield.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I don't want you to give all the secrets away,
- 21:26Speaker 2: but Richard, if you're the Patriots, how are you game
- 21:30Speaker 2: planning in those scenarios? What do you think would be
- 21:33Speaker 2: most successful in terms of you know, you're checking at
- 21:37Speaker 2: the line, your hand signals in the backfield. How do
- 21:39Speaker 2: you think they're going to address JSN lining up in
- 21:43Speaker 2: the backfield.
- 21:45Speaker 1: It's gonna be tough because schematically, if you just take
- 21:50Speaker 1: the play, the corner route that he ran for a touchdown,
- 21:52Speaker 1: it's a play that Kyle Shanahan ran against US when
- 21:55Speaker 1: he was in Atlanta with a running back, and it's
- 21:57Speaker 1: a seven cut the scissors out of the backfield, and
- 22:01Speaker 1: there's really no answer for it outside of your linebacker
- 22:04Speaker 1: knowing the play and then pretty much racing the receiver
- 22:07Speaker 1: there to the corner of the end zone, because schematically,
- 22:11Speaker 1: every defender did their job on that play. Hey, the
- 22:14Speaker 1: post route goes, the cornerback drives it to the safety
- 22:18Speaker 1: and they close that gap and they sandwich the post route.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And then number two, if he comes off and runs
- 22:24Speaker 1: that out, he'll hold a nickel. And then when the
- 22:26Speaker 1: running back comes out, you're not expecting a seven cut.
- 22:29Speaker 1: He's the linebacker's responsible for that. He's gonna attach to
- 22:33Speaker 1: the hip of that guy, and if he runs a
- 22:35Speaker 1: seven cut, it's just a bad matchup for you. So
- 22:37Speaker 1: it's not really like, hey, we're gonna check this because
- 22:39Speaker 1: he's in the backfield, because you can't necessarily bastardize your
- 22:43Speaker 1: entire defense for one guy, especially when he's in the backfield.
- 22:48Speaker 1: That's the last person you're expecting a vertical threat from,
- 22:51Speaker 1: which is why it works so well against that defense.
- 22:53Speaker 1: So again, a man coverage is probably the only way
- 22:56Speaker 1: you can deal with that. If they're running that consistently
- 22:58Speaker 1: and they're not running it a ton, they're not running
- 23:00Speaker 1: it enough for you to say, hey, we're gonna spend
- 23:03Speaker 1: all our time game planning for this one play, Because
- 23:05Speaker 1: then you run into situations that you're not prepared for
- 23:08Speaker 1: the things that they they run most commonly, there's gonna
- 23:11Speaker 1: be a few wrinkles in this game that the New
- 23:13Speaker 1: England Patriots are gonna have to that they're gonna see
- 23:16Speaker 1: that they're that they haven't seen all season. And if
- 23:19Speaker 1: you play too shallow, you play too concerned about Jackson
- 23:22Speaker 1: Smith and Jigba, and you leave uh Rashid Shaheed one
- 23:27Speaker 1: on one. Even if it's Marcus Jones, that's a tough matchup.
- 23:30Speaker 1: That's a tough matchup. He has the entire field and
- 23:33Speaker 1: he has four two speed. So even with Marcus Jones,
- 23:36Speaker 1: who probably can match him stride for stride, it's still
- 23:38Speaker 1: a difficult matchup to play. And so it's it's a
- 23:41Speaker 1: it's a it's a give and take kind of situation
- 23:43Speaker 1: with the New England Patriots. Uh they're gonna have that.
- 23:46Speaker 1: They're gonna obviously do everything they can to take Jackson
- 23:48Speaker 1: Smith and Jigba away, but you gotta be cautious because
- 23:53Speaker 1: the scheme is still very difficult to manage and other
- 23:55Speaker 1: guys can get open.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Let's talk about the running backs. Richard Ramandre Stevenson has
- 24:01Speaker 2: had a resurgence this year. He has had fumbling issues
- 24:04Speaker 2: in the past, and he seemed to be able to
- 24:05Speaker 2: hold onto the rock this year. And then they drafted
- 24:07Speaker 2: the rookie Trevion Henderson. They've got a two headed monster there.
- 24:11Speaker 2: What do you do as the Seattle Seahawks to contain
- 24:14Speaker 2: these guys. We've already talked about the importance of Drake
- 24:16Speaker 2: may And and his legs on the ground, but to
- 24:20Speaker 2: set the tone, they're gonna have to run the rock
- 24:23Speaker 2: with Remandre and Trayveon. How do you think the Seattle
- 24:26Speaker 2: Seahawks are going to approach these guys?
- 24:31Speaker 1: The Patriots run some duo. They run a lot of duo,
- 24:33Speaker 1: which is a double team on the two d tackles
- 24:35Speaker 1: and then they move up to the linebackers. But the
- 24:37Speaker 1: problem is running against the Seattle Seahawks is Byron Murphy
- 24:41Speaker 1: and Leonard Williams do a fantastic job against those double teams.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Especially Byron Murphy. He does a great job splitting those
- 24:48Speaker 1: double teams and that kills those plays. That's the reason
- 24:50Speaker 1: the San Francisco forty nine ers run game was dead,
- 24:53Speaker 1: especially in Santa Clara. In that game, in the last
- 24:55Speaker 1: game for the one seed. He was blowing those plays up.
- 24:59Speaker 1: And it's not even always him making the tackle, it's
- 25:03Speaker 1: him freeing up the linebacker and not allowing the offensive
- 25:06Speaker 1: lineman to move him out of his spot, and that
- 25:09Speaker 1: kills those plays. So I think they're gonna have a
- 25:12Speaker 1: tough time. This is a reason the Seattle Seahawks are
- 25:14Speaker 1: number one rush defense in the National Football League. Sure,
- 25:17Speaker 1: Ramandre Stevenson has been fantastic. Trevion Henderson has been a
- 25:21Speaker 1: big play machine for this team, but there's a reason
- 25:25Speaker 1: he hasn't played as many steps because he's been vulnerable
- 25:27Speaker 1: in pass protection and he's made some mistakes there. And
- 25:32Speaker 1: I'm sure if the if Mike McDonald sees him, sees
- 25:35Speaker 1: him in the ball game expressed, expect an exotic pressure
- 25:39Speaker 1: to force him into a tough situation because he has
- 25:42Speaker 1: handled it well this season. Those are the things, the
- 25:47Speaker 1: little chess matches, the small matchups within a game that
- 25:50Speaker 1: really determine these things. And Remandre is better in the
- 25:53Speaker 1: pass game, but he's not as explosive. Uh better in
- 25:56Speaker 1: pass protection, but he's not as explosive as a runner
- 25:58Speaker 1: or in the in the past game. So I think
- 26:02Speaker 1: the Seattle Seahawks do a good job against their run game.
- 26:04Speaker 1: It's gonna be how Drake May can decipher this defense
- 26:09Speaker 1: and execute. That's gonna gonna tell the tale. Today's show
- 26:16Speaker 1: is brought to you by our presenting sponsor, hard Rock Bet,

- 28:46Speaker 2: This year, I'm focusing on a small shift that makes
- 28:48Speaker 2: a huge difference effortless presence. It sounds counterintuitive, but for me,
- 28:54Speaker 2: that means planning ahead so I can truly live in
- 28:56Speaker 2: the moment, especially when enjoying a few drinks. My simple
- 29:00Speaker 2: trick for staying balanced is taking z biotics pre alcohol
- 29:04Speaker 2: before I start. Z Biotics pre alcohol probiotic drink is
- 29:08Speaker 2: the world's first genetically engineered probiotic. It was invented by
- 29:13Speaker 2: PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking. Here's how
- 29:17Speaker 2: it works. When you drink, alcohol gets converted intos toxic
- 29:21Speaker 2: byproduct in your gut. It's a build up of this byproduct,
- 29:25Speaker 2: not dehydration that's to blame for rough days after drinking.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Pre alcohol producing is an enzyme to break this byproduct down.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Just remember to make pre alcohol your first drink of
- 29:35Speaker 2: the night. Drink responsibly and you'll feel your best tomorrow.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Every time I have pre alcohol before drinks, I notice
- 29:42Speaker 2: the difference the next day, even after a night out,
- 29:45Speaker 2: I can confidently plan on going to the gym to
- 29:47Speaker 2: get a morning workout in without even warring. Ready to
- 29:51Speaker 2: try it, go to zbiotics dot com forward slash Richard Sherman.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Now you'll get fifteen percent off your first order when
- 29:58Speaker 2: you use the code Richard Sherman at checkout. Plus, it's

- 30:06Speaker 2: no risk. Subscriptions are also available for maximum consistency. Remember
- 30:11Speaker 2: to head over to zebiotics dot com slash Richard Sherman
- 30:15Speaker 2: and use the code Richard Sherman at checkout for fifteen
- 30:18Speaker 2: percent off. When Mike McDonald came over for Baltimore two
- 30:22Speaker 2: years ago, Richard, you knew there was going to be
- 30:25Speaker 2: a change, especially defensively for the Seattle Seahawks team, and
- 30:29Speaker 2: it's reaping the benefits of that move. How impressed have
- 30:32Speaker 2: you been with his tenure so far? And let's be
- 30:36Speaker 2: honest here, are you surprised at all that these Seattle
- 30:39Speaker 2: Seahawks have found success so quickly that they're in the
- 30:42Speaker 2: super Bowl in year two.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I think he's been fantastic. He's been everything they could
- 30:48Speaker 1: imagine everything they could wish for and everything that John
- 30:52Speaker 1: Snyder thought he'd be in more. Let's go in more
- 30:55Speaker 1: because I can't imagine even John Snyder could have imagine
- 30:57Speaker 1: a ten win season in his first year and then
- 31:00Speaker 1: a super Bowl trip in his second year. I mean,
- 31:02Speaker 1: that's a dream scenario for any coach, any GM picking
- 31:05Speaker 1: a coach and saying, hey, I told you, guys, I
- 31:07Speaker 1: did not tell you it was gonna happen like this.
- 31:09Speaker 1: And John Snyder needs to be commended and deserves a
- 31:12Speaker 1: lot of credit for what's happening. And he's had tremendous
- 31:14Speaker 1: draft classes. The heat trade mid season was a masterfull
- 31:19Speaker 1: trade and really has had a huge impact on this
- 31:22Speaker 1: season for the Seattle Seahawks. But the thing that has
- 31:26Speaker 1: helped Mike McDonald and has I think really allowed him
- 31:30Speaker 1: to flourish is his ability to pivot. And we can
- 31:37Speaker 1: talk about Ryan Grubb and his decision to hire Ryan
- 31:40Speaker 1: Grubb in his first year. They still win ten games.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Not a lot of people are gonna move away from
- 31:45Speaker 1: an offensive coordinator when you win ten games, and he
- 31:48Speaker 1: was like, Hey, this doesn't work for me. I appreciate you.
- 31:51Speaker 1: You did a solid job. I want us to go
- 31:53Speaker 1: in a different direction, shake hands, wash your hands of it,
- 31:56Speaker 1: and then move on to Clint Kubiak. And I think
- 31:59Speaker 1: in that respect, you can see that that kind of
- 32:02Speaker 1: decision making in a lot of facets of this of
- 32:05Speaker 1: this organization that has worked out. Now, obviously it's been
- 32:08Speaker 1: in hand in hand with John Snyder's decisions, but you
- 32:12Speaker 1: go back and look at Geno Smith's decision, and Gino
- 32:15Speaker 1: wanted out. He didn't feel good about this. He wanted
- 32:17Speaker 1: more money. They stood pat and said, hey, we're not
- 32:20Speaker 1: giving you more money. If you want to be traded,
- 32:22Speaker 1: we'll try to We'll try to acquiesce to your needs
- 32:25Speaker 1: and your desires. And they traded him to the Raiders,
- 32:28Speaker 1: to Pete Carroll for what they got, and then they
- 32:31Speaker 1: picked up Sam Donald. And even I question, it's changed
- 32:35Speaker 1: at a at a critical point, at a critical position.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And again what happened and how the season ended last
- 32:41Speaker 1: year for Sam Donald, there were a lot of questions
- 32:44Speaker 1: about how he can handle pressure, could he handle the
- 32:47Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks offensive line was not great the year before.
- 32:50Speaker 1: They had a lot of issues. They have since secured throws.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Gray Zabel has had a phenomenal rookie season you talk
- 32:57Speaker 1: about a guy who's had one of the biggest impacts
- 32:59Speaker 1: of all the rookies in the National Football League. But
- 33:01Speaker 1: you don't just talk about offensive lineman a lot both
- 33:06Speaker 1: culturally within the building and how he talks, the swagger,
- 33:09Speaker 1: the confidence he brings, the relationship. I mean, you talk
- 33:12Speaker 1: about the respect Leonard Williams has for him, and and
- 33:14Speaker 1: and that that conversation on the sideline where he tells
- 33:17Speaker 1: Leonard Williams to attack the beat gap and Leonard Williams
- 33:20Speaker 1: goes out there and gets a sack. I think maybe
- 33:22Speaker 1: a driver too later. And you talk about listening to
- 33:24Speaker 1: a rookie tell a veteran who's been in the league
- 33:27Speaker 1: eleven years or so, Hey, do this, and I think
- 33:31Speaker 1: it'll work out, and he goes and it and it
- 33:32Speaker 1: works out in the playoffs. Uh, for that matter, there's
- 33:36Speaker 1: been so many changes like that. And then move on
- 33:38Speaker 1: to dk Metcalf and Tyler Lockett being able to move
- 33:41Speaker 1: away from those guys. That's that's a tough decision for
- 33:44Speaker 1: a head coach. DK Metcalf was the number one receiver
- 33:47Speaker 1: at the time, and sure with everything JSN has done
- 33:51Speaker 1: this season, you could say, oh man, it was a
- 33:54Speaker 1: great decision, But did anybody know that at the time,
- 33:56Speaker 1: you're getting rid of a proven receiver, a proven go
- 33:59Speaker 1: to receiver for you. And I think those decisions are
- 34:04Speaker 1: the ones that have helped enhance the culture and even
- 34:07Speaker 1: culturally within the building. There's so many things where he's
- 34:09Speaker 1: been laser focused on trying to get things right, tweaking
- 34:13Speaker 1: the system just enough to Hey, what guys there. Stephen
- 34:19Speaker 1: Hauska is in there with doctor Gervais and having conversations
- 34:23Speaker 1: with the head coach, just making sure the culture and
- 34:26Speaker 1: the knobs are turned just the right way to get
- 34:28Speaker 1: guys where they're supposed to be, to push the guys
- 34:31Speaker 1: but not push them too far. And I think his
- 34:35Speaker 1: awareness and his humility with all of these things are
- 34:38Speaker 1: what are allowing him to have a great amount of
- 34:40Speaker 1: success in the National Football League as a head coach
- 34:43Speaker 1: because players respect that he's being honest, he's being transparent,
- 34:47Speaker 1: he's being human. But he's also taking care of his
- 34:49Speaker 1: guys and putting them in great positions, and you can
- 34:52Speaker 1: only respect that.
- 34:53Speaker 2: On the other side of the ball, Mike v Abel,
- 34:55Speaker 2: I mean, we talked about this guy a ton this season.
- 34:58Speaker 2: He certainly deserves to be in that conversation for Coach
- 35:01Speaker 2: of the Year. And let's look at this. I know
- 35:03Speaker 2: you don't think the Patriots are gonna win the super Bowl.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Reality is, Mike Vrabels won a couple of Super Bowls
- 35:08Speaker 2: and now he's fighting for that that first one as
- 35:11Speaker 2: a coach. You know, what type of impact do you
- 35:13Speaker 2: think his personal Super Bowl experience as a player can
- 35:16Speaker 2: have on this team, especially a team that has young
- 35:19Speaker 2: players and key positions.
- 35:23Speaker 1: It definitely matters. His experience definitely matters. It'll be it'll
- 35:26Speaker 1: be a huge factor. And just the way he relates
- 35:28Speaker 1: to his players, I mean he does not it's it's
- 35:31Speaker 1: he really blurs that line between player coach relationship and
- 35:35Speaker 1: you can see it. Even when there's conflict on the sideline,
- 35:38Speaker 1: he's right in the middle of it. And usually when
- 35:40Speaker 1: you see that with coaches, you're like, oh man, this
- 35:42Speaker 1: is getting rough. Mike Raveel doesn't shy away from it,
- 35:45Speaker 1: doesn't doesn't make a big deal out of it. He
- 35:47Speaker 1: looks guys in the eye says, hey, I got you
- 35:49Speaker 1: like a cool that was on me, or hey you
- 35:51Speaker 1: got to be better than that. It has grown men
- 35:53Speaker 1: and super outfits. You can recognize a doll can recognize
- 35:56Speaker 1: a big dog. Mitchell, you can recognize a big dog.
- 35:59Speaker 1: I saw him, Christian Barmore, go at it. What game
- 36:03Speaker 1: was that was the Texans? It was it was one
- 36:05Speaker 1: of the games they were on the side. They were drawing,
- 36:08Speaker 1: and I think they were winning in the game. But
- 36:10Speaker 1: it didn't matter. He was he was perturbed about something.
- 36:13Speaker 1: And Frabel Usually coaches are like, hey, man, I don't
- 36:15Speaker 1: want to get like, get the security, like deal with him.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Frable didn't shy away from that. He said, get out
- 36:19Speaker 1: of my way. I talked to him like, hey, what's up, Like,
- 36:22Speaker 1: let's let's figure this out right now. I don't care
- 36:23Speaker 1: if it's in the public, I don't care. You can
- 36:25Speaker 1: get mad, you can get all this, but let's get
- 36:26Speaker 1: to the bottom of this. And I think that's the
- 36:29Speaker 1: difference between coaches that are former players and coaches that
- 36:34Speaker 1: are not form players. And these are two different guys
- 36:36Speaker 1: Mike McDonald not necessarily a former player, great football coach
- 36:39Speaker 1: and Frabel former player, great football coach. It's two different
- 36:43Speaker 1: ways to skin a cat. But you can see there
- 36:47Speaker 1: per each person's personality within their team. You can see
- 36:51Speaker 1: Mike Rabel and the way his players are responding to him,
- 36:54Speaker 1: players that have not played as well as they are
- 36:55Speaker 1: playing for him for other teams, Guys that are going
- 36:58Speaker 1: out there and putting their bodies on the line, putting
- 37:01Speaker 1: their health and their well being on the line for
- 37:04Speaker 1: this coach and this team, and they're buying into what
- 37:07Speaker 1: he's saying because they know that he has the same
- 37:09Speaker 1: love and respect for him for them as they do
- 37:12Speaker 1: for him. And I think there's no calculating, there's no
- 37:16Speaker 1: measuring that. And I think that's a big reason why
- 37:18Speaker 1: they are where they are and they're gonna have a
- 37:19Speaker 1: lot of success long term. And again that's another reason
- 37:22Speaker 1: we don't know what the heck y'all doing in Tennessee.
- 37:24Speaker 1: But don't get me started.
- 37:27Speaker 2: It worked out for Robert Salah at least Richard got
- 37:30Speaker 2: you gotta at least enjoy that a little bit. But
- 37:32Speaker 2: I'm with you, Yeah, I enjoy that. I'm with you.
- 37:35Speaker 2: And we got to look at this too. I mean,
- 37:37Speaker 2: this is a rematch of sorts. I know it's a
- 37:39Speaker 2: what shoot, thirteen years later, but Josh McDaniel was OC
- 37:44Speaker 2: back then. Richard, Josh McDaniel was the OC back then,
- 37:47Speaker 2: and you had to go against his offense. Do you
- 37:50Speaker 2: see any similarities here as you as you've been watching
- 37:53Speaker 2: the Patriots offense, you see any similarities to when you
- 37:55Speaker 2: played them? I know Tom was at the helm, but
- 37:58Speaker 2: there's gotta be some at least play calls that are
- 38:01Speaker 2: pretty pretty what's the word phil it in for me.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Richard familiar? There you go. They they run what they run,
- 38:14Speaker 1: and they he does a great job, just like New
- 38:17Speaker 1: England papers always have. They used to be so multiple
- 38:20Speaker 1: that every game would regardless of what scheme they're playing,
- 38:22Speaker 1: it's it sometimes will look like an entirely new playbook.
- 38:25Speaker 1: You they'd be running gap scheme run game against the
- 38:30Speaker 1: Broncos and then they're running outside zone against the Colts
- 38:35Speaker 1: and you're like, h so, which one do you do?
- 38:39Speaker 1: And it's really based on the defense that they're getting.
- 38:41Speaker 1: So that's changed. And Rabel spoke to that. He's like, Hey,
- 38:45Speaker 1: I want to just get familiarity, especially on the defensive
- 38:48Speaker 1: side of the ball. We're not going to go and
- 38:49Speaker 1: switch the scheme. I want to get guys in position,
- 38:52Speaker 1: do things they do well that's similar to what we
- 38:54Speaker 1: did in Seattle, and just let them play football. Sure
- 38:56Speaker 1: won't make the adjustment sure, we'll understand the weaknesses of
- 38:59Speaker 1: what we're doing. But I mean, some people live in
- 39:02Speaker 1: the whole world of a jack of all trades, but
- 39:05Speaker 1: a master of none. And some would say a jack
- 39:07Speaker 1: of some is still better than a master of just one.
- 39:09Speaker 1: And I don't know if I how I feel about that.
- 39:12Speaker 1: I think if you master, if you do what you
- 39:14Speaker 1: do well. We've had a lot of successful with that.
- 39:16Speaker 1: We won super Bowls, we got to another super Bowl,
- 39:18Speaker 1: could have got to a third super Bowl. Story for
- 39:19Speaker 1: a different day, But I think there's something to that.
- 39:24Speaker 1: But I think McDaniel is going to look at and
- 39:26Speaker 1: study this scheme. He's gonna study what the Rams had
- 39:28Speaker 1: success with. He's gonna look in his playbook and say, hey,
- 39:31Speaker 1: we have that play we have dagger. Can we put
- 39:33Speaker 1: dagger in wee we're pushing the safeties up and running
- 39:37Speaker 1: that dagger across? Hey? Can we go post corner? Could
- 39:40Speaker 1: we go dig reverse and show Hey, when those corners
- 39:43Speaker 1: are biting on that dig, bounce back outside and there's
- 39:46Speaker 1: an opening there. Can we check the football down? Hey, Drake,
- 39:51Speaker 1: may don't be greedy, don't be too aggressive, don't be
- 39:55Speaker 1: too impatient. Pushing the ball down the field. Sometimes we
- 39:57Speaker 1: can just let them back up, and that's what's was
- 40:00Speaker 1: something Tom Brady was fantastic at. Hey defense is backing up.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Give it to Amindrius defense and that's seven yards. Let's
- 40:07Speaker 1: keep moving the ball down the field. We don't have to.
- 40:09Speaker 1: We can be death by a thousand cuts if that's
- 40:11Speaker 1: what it takes. But a lot of times young guys
- 40:13Speaker 1: get impatient. So I think, I think I've seen similarities.
- 40:17Speaker 1: But how he's gonna attack the Seattle Seahawks defense is
- 40:22Speaker 1: different than how they would attack our defense is they're
- 40:24Speaker 1: running too high. For the most part, we were a
- 40:26Speaker 1: cover three team predominantly. They do run some cover three.
- 40:29Speaker 1: They can live in it at times first and second
- 40:32Speaker 1: down where they're stacking the box and guys are down there.
- 40:36Speaker 1: But a lot of his complicated exotic pressures and things
- 40:40Speaker 1: like that come from too high, and he's able to
- 40:42Speaker 1: stop the run in a too high defense. So I
- 40:46Speaker 1: think the way Mike McDaniel is going to try to
- 40:49Speaker 1: attack him is the same way Sean McVay had success.
- 40:52Speaker 1: And I think Mike did a good job of closing
- 40:54Speaker 1: some of those holes and shoring up some of those
- 40:57Speaker 1: defensive matchups. But we'll see that's the chess game. You know,
- 41:01Speaker 1: what the Seahawks do well is what they do. Drake
- 41:04Speaker 1: May has been proficient down the field as a passer
- 41:07Speaker 1: this season, not as much in the playoffs. He's he's
- 41:09Speaker 1: hit him down the field throws, but he was much
- 41:11Speaker 1: better during the regular season. That's kind of slowed down,
- 41:13Speaker 1: and you can blame some of the weather for that,
- 41:15Speaker 1: but I would expect him to try to go back
- 41:17Speaker 1: to that this week.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Richard, this defense, they're gonna have their hands full. They're
- 41:22Speaker 2: going to see an opponent they have not seen before.
- 41:25Speaker 2: That being said, there's already a conversation. You know, it's
- 41:27Speaker 2: only going to pick up throughout the week that this team,
- 41:30Speaker 2: this defense is starting to draw comparisons of your team,
- 41:33Speaker 2: the Legion of Boom. Do you see any similarities between
- 41:37Speaker 2: these defenses?
- 41:41Speaker 1: Not a ton, you know, and other than them having
- 41:43Speaker 1: a Seattle Seahawks jersey on different different styles, different teams schematically,
- 41:50Speaker 1: both great defenses in their own rights, fly around, they're hitting,
- 41:54Speaker 1: playing with a lot of energy, a lot of depth
- 41:56Speaker 1: on the defensive line. You're talking about Byron Murphy being
- 41:59Speaker 1: a POTENTI could have been an All Pro this season
- 42:01Speaker 1: and he's rotating in off the bench behind guys that
- 42:05Speaker 1: are fantastic. You got a guy DeMarcus Lawrence in his
- 42:09Speaker 1: twelfth season, getting going to his first Super Bowl and
- 42:13Speaker 1: has had as much of an impact on his team
- 42:15Speaker 1: as anyone. Ernest Jones, a guy who was who has
- 42:18Speaker 1: traded to multiple teams, a cast off from the Rams,
- 42:20Speaker 1: and Rams said, hey, we don't want him. He's two
- 42:22Speaker 1: injury prone or his knee may not be good enough.
- 42:25Speaker 1: And he's come to the Seattle Seahawks mid season last
- 42:28Speaker 1: year and become a household name and a star. Wars
- 42:31Speaker 1: in the middle of that defense, making big plays in
- 42:35Speaker 1: the past game, in the run game. The only interception
- 42:38Speaker 1: that the Seattle Seahawks got in the playoffs this year
- 42:40Speaker 1: was him against Brock Perdy this year and in the
- 42:43Speaker 1: divisional round, and he's been fantastic. Then you go in
- 42:46Speaker 1: the back end, you got Julian Love and those guys.
- 42:49Speaker 1: So you got Devin Witherspoon, who was an All Pro
- 42:53Speaker 1: this year. This year, you got Rik Wooland, who had
- 42:57Speaker 1: the big mistake last week but has overall fantastic this season,
- 43:01Speaker 1: especially the second half of the season. I think he's
- 43:03Speaker 1: gonna play fantastic and have a huge factor in this game.
- 43:07Speaker 1: So it's different. It's different. I think we had more
- 43:09Speaker 1: household names. We probably had a few more all pros
- 43:12Speaker 1: on our team, a lot of bigger personalities. They don't
- 43:15Speaker 1: necessarily have the personalities, but they have the talent and
- 43:19Speaker 1: their numbers speak for themselves. I expect them to win
- 43:21Speaker 1: this game. I expect them to be sound. Those guys
- 43:23Speaker 1: are running and hitting, and again the name you're gonna
- 43:27Speaker 1: hear New England Patriots fans get prepared for it, Nick
- 43:30Speaker 1: m and Warri. That's a name you will hear a
- 43:31Speaker 1: lot in this league. I expect him to be in
- 43:34Speaker 1: the defensive Player of the Year conversation for a number
- 43:38Speaker 1: of years to come, unless they're trying to ignore Seattle,
- 43:41Speaker 1: which they're not gonna be able to after this game.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Richard, you said it, Arretie. You had a lot of
- 43:45Speaker 2: prominent voices and leaders in your locker room. I mean
- 43:49Speaker 2: between yourself obviously, Cam Earl, might be Cliff, you know, kJ, Bobby,
- 43:55Speaker 2: you know. The list goes on and on and on,
- 43:58Speaker 2: and here we see, you know, John Schneider go out
- 44:01Speaker 2: and pluck the Marcus Lawrence from the Dallas Cowboys who
- 44:04Speaker 2: said rather emphatically that he's going to Seattle to win
- 44:08Speaker 2: a Super Bowl. Who do you think has stepped up
- 44:10Speaker 2: in similar role that you guys had with these leaders
- 44:13Speaker 2: on your defense?
- 44:14Speaker 1: With this current team, I mean you could say anybody.
- 44:19Speaker 1: It's been by committee. I mean you've seen the leadership
- 44:22Speaker 1: from the young guy Nick Emman Warrior. It looked like
- 44:24Speaker 1: conflict on the sideline with Tarik Woolding, but that's accountability.
- 44:28Speaker 1: And for a young guy to go up to a
- 44:29Speaker 1: veteran like that and say, hey, come on, we better
- 44:31Speaker 1: than that. We got to be better than that. It
- 44:33Speaker 1: just shows you the hierarchy and the way things are
- 44:35Speaker 1: around that team. And I think Week had a lot
- 44:36Speaker 1: of respect for that. He's frustrated at the moment, but
- 44:39Speaker 1: I don't think there was any maliciousness towards it either way.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I think there was respect. Leonard Williams is a huge
- 44:45Speaker 1: defensive leader on this team. He's his tone cent, Devin
- 44:48Speaker 1: Witherspoon tone setter on this defense. But Marcus Lawrence is
- 44:53Speaker 1: the engine. When you talk about a guy who plays
- 44:55Speaker 1: with a relentless effort every single play, he plays like
- 44:58Speaker 1: every game is a super Bowl. You see the force
- 45:01Speaker 1: fumble against brod Perty. It's a play that they've had
- 45:03Speaker 1: multiple times this season. He's had because of his effort.
- 45:07Speaker 1: His effort was rewarded with turnovers, and his effort was
- 45:11Speaker 1: rewarded a few times when Tarik's Knight knocked the football
- 45:15Speaker 1: out a few times and here comes DeMarcus Lawrence picking
- 45:18Speaker 1: it up for multiple touchdowns on this season. So in
- 45:22Speaker 1: the back end, Julian Love, I think Julian Love is
- 45:24Speaker 1: a leader. Kobe Bryant, named after the late Great, has
- 45:29Speaker 1: been a phenomenal player in this league. Has been a
- 45:32Speaker 1: He moved from corner. He was a corner when they
- 45:35Speaker 1: drafted him, downed his niche at safety, got a little
- 45:38Speaker 1: banged up and they went with a Koudah for a
- 45:40Speaker 1: little while. He's back in the lineup and again he
- 45:42Speaker 1: just stabilizes that defense. So it's by committee. There's so
- 45:45Speaker 1: many leaders, but this is a defense that is just
- 45:49Speaker 1: really well coached, really disciplined all three levels, and they
- 45:53Speaker 1: cause a lot of issues because of how well they're
- 45:55Speaker 1: coaching and how well they tackled.
- 45:56Speaker 2: I'm going to bring you back to twenty thirteen, Richard,
- 45:58Speaker 2: if you could pluck one player off the Seattle Seahawks
- 46:02Speaker 2: defense and have them suit up with you in that
- 46:04Speaker 2: Super Bowl?
- 46:04Speaker 1: Who would it be? In this Super Bowl, I'm sorry,
- 46:09Speaker 1: in your.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Super Bowl and the super Bowl you played in against
- 46:12Speaker 2: the Patriots. If you were to take one defensive player
- 46:15Speaker 2: off of this current team and have them line up
- 46:17Speaker 2: with you, who would it be? I mean, could you
- 46:20Speaker 2: imagine Nick m and Worri playing there with Cam Chancellor
- 46:24Speaker 2: and Earl? I mean DeMarcus Lawrence. I know you had
- 46:26Speaker 2: a ton of vets on the D line, but you
- 46:28Speaker 2: know somebody like that obviously had the two big D
- 46:31Speaker 2: tackles in the middle. Who do you think would benefit
- 46:33Speaker 2: your defense the most?
- 46:36Speaker 1: I don't know, And be hard to take anybody off
- 46:38Speaker 1: the field. I'm being honest. You're gonna take off. You
- 46:40Speaker 1: don't take off the Hall of Famer at Mike Linebacker,
- 46:43Speaker 1: You're gonna take off? Take off the Super Bowl MVP
- 46:47Speaker 1: or kJ Wright or who are you gonna take off?
- 46:49Speaker 1: Mike Bennet, Cliff Averril? Who are you gonna take off
- 46:51Speaker 1: the field? Again, That's why it's two different ends of
- 46:54Speaker 1: the fight. But I just don't see, you know, I
- 46:57Speaker 1: think they would say the same thing, you know, I
- 46:59Speaker 1: think they've feel comfortable with the group that they have
- 47:01Speaker 1: and confident in the guys that they have in their building,
- 47:03Speaker 1: because these are the guys that they went to battle with.
- 47:05Speaker 1: So it's hard for me to say we're getting rid
- 47:07Speaker 1: of anybody off that defense and getting to that same spot.
- 47:10Speaker 1: I think sometimes it's a rhythm. Sometimes it's you're right
- 47:14Speaker 1: with who you came with, and these are the guys
- 47:16Speaker 1: they came with. These are the guys they did it
- 47:17Speaker 1: with and went to battle with all season long. These
- 47:20Speaker 1: are the guys they want to line up with when
- 47:22Speaker 1: when when it's for all the marbles, and I respect that.
- 47:24Speaker 1: So I'm not gonna say we would have picked up
- 47:26Speaker 1: anybody off their defense, and I don't think they would
- 47:28Speaker 1: have picked up any off our defense. It's always easier
- 47:31Speaker 1: to say, you know what I mean in hindsight, because
- 47:33Speaker 1: you know, we've already ran our race and got it
- 47:35Speaker 1: and got the all pros and and you know, got
- 47:37Speaker 1: our accolades. These guys or are at the beginning of
- 47:40Speaker 1: their run, so I'm looking forward to seeing how far
- 47:43Speaker 1: they can take it.
- 47:45Speaker 2: That's a very politically correct answer, Richard. I appreciate it.
- 47:48Speaker 2: I know where you're coming from. I know exactly where
- 47:50Speaker 2: you're coming from, Richard, this game is going to be
- 47:56Speaker 2: played in Santa Clair. I know this is a spy
- 47:57Speaker 2: you're very familiar with. Obviously the Seattle Seahawks have played
- 48:00Speaker 2: their numerous times as well. It's similar to how the
- 48:03Speaker 2: two teams played in twenty fourteen and Super Bowl and Glendale.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Do you feel that playing in a division rivals building
- 48:10Speaker 2: plays at the advantage of the Seahawks in this one.
- 48:14Speaker 1: To a degree? Yeah. I mean, I think it's familiarity.
- 48:17Speaker 1: It's not a stadium they're unfamiliar with, it's a stadium
- 48:20Speaker 1: they've played in, they've had success in, And I think
- 48:23Speaker 1: that helped us in twenty thirteen. You know, we we
- 48:26Speaker 1: were going to MetLife and we beat the heck out
- 48:29Speaker 1: of the Giants in MetLife. We had one of our
- 48:31Speaker 1: best games. And to go back there confident, understanding the turf,
- 48:36Speaker 1: understanding you've had success here. The lights are brighter, But
- 48:39Speaker 1: I mean, does it really matter. We could have played
- 48:41Speaker 1: that game on the Moon. It would have been the
- 48:43Speaker 1: same result. And so I think just the confidence of
- 48:46Speaker 1: going to somewhere that you've been and obviously there's a
- 48:50Speaker 1: stat going out that the team that's traveling from east
- 48:52Speaker 1: to west usually wins this game, not the team that's traveling.
- 48:55Speaker 1: But if we wouldn't have thrown at the one yard line,
- 48:57Speaker 1: that's that it'd probably be different. But again, this is
- 49:02Speaker 1: about as short of a trip as the Seattle Seahawks
- 49:05Speaker 1: could take and not be a home game in their
- 49:08Speaker 1: own stadium. They're wearing, They're wearing the Navy blue, the
- 49:11Speaker 1: all Navy blue, Mitchell, all the elements are there for
- 49:15Speaker 1: it to for it to just exercise these demons and
- 49:20Speaker 1: let's move forward. And I need it in my life.
- 49:24Speaker 1: So yes, familiarity with the stadium, with the team, with
- 49:28Speaker 1: the environment definitely helps their practicing at San Jose. Apparently
- 49:32Speaker 1: neither team wants to practice at the forty nine ers
- 49:34Speaker 1: facility because of this this station, this this electricity station
- 49:40Speaker 1: deal conspiracy. What do you What do you make of that? Richard?
- 49:42Speaker 2: Was that discussed at all when you were playing in
- 49:44Speaker 2: San Francisco.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Not that I can remember. I don't remember.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Maybe there's some truth to it with all these injuries
- 49:52Speaker 2: over the last few years for San Francisco. But it's
- 49:56Speaker 2: wild to hear about it just out of nowhere.
- 50:00Speaker 1: It is. It is really wild, But you know, it's
- 50:03Speaker 1: always something to talk about. It will be a conversation
- 50:05Speaker 1: this offseason. But it's a tough situation because you're not
- 50:08Speaker 1: moving that and you're not moving the stadium. Maybe you
- 50:10Speaker 1: can move the practice facility, but even then, it's a
- 50:12Speaker 1: tough situation when they're in the stadium that they practice
- 50:16Speaker 1: at the stadium and they've never yes, they have. They
- 50:19Speaker 1: when they were in Candlestick, they practiced in the same spot.
- 50:22Speaker 1: So that's what Jerry Rice was saying. He was like, Hey,
- 50:24Speaker 1: we won two Super Bowls practicing in this same spot,
- 50:26Speaker 1: So nobody talked about it. Then It's not like this
- 50:28Speaker 1: is a new facility, Mitchell. This is not like a
- 50:30Speaker 1: new place state they started practicing, They've had a lot
- 50:34Speaker 1: of success there. It only becomes a story when it
- 50:36Speaker 1: becomes a story. You know, when it was twenty twelve
- 50:39Speaker 1: and twenty eleven and they were in the Super Bowl,
- 50:41Speaker 1: nobody was like, oh man, what about this station next
- 50:44Speaker 1: door to your facility. It's like, hey, maybe if you
- 50:47Speaker 1: had to run the ball at the one, you know,
- 50:48Speaker 1: you would have beat the Baltimore Ravens that day. You know,
- 50:50Speaker 1: maybe if you don't throw at Richard Sherman for the
- 50:52Speaker 1: game in the NFC Championship game, you might have a
- 50:54Speaker 1: chance in that game. But you know, I don't think
- 50:56Speaker 1: it was about the substation to bring that up.
- 51:00Speaker 2: And well, I'm glad they didn't go elsewhere with that play, Richard.
- 51:09Speaker 2: I think things would have been a little bit different.
- 51:11Speaker 2: It certainly certainly shaped your career early on Richard. Last
- 51:15Speaker 2: last episode, we were talking about you know what it's
- 51:18Speaker 2: like this week, you know, leading to super Bowl, the
- 51:21Speaker 2: bye week before Super Bowl. But now as we entered
- 51:24Speaker 2: the week of Super Bowl, you know, what what do
- 51:26Speaker 2: guys do to stay focused? I know there are a
- 51:28Speaker 2: lot of distractions in the host city, and you hear
- 51:32Speaker 2: tales from the past of them, But what did you
- 51:34Speaker 2: guys do in this week of the Super Bowl to
- 51:37Speaker 2: stay focused and locked in and remove distractions?
- 51:41Speaker 1: Well, again, it's it's when you have a disciplined team.
- 51:45Speaker 1: They don't just become disciplined the week at the Super Bowl.
- 51:48Speaker 1: You know, you haven't heard a lot of news. You
- 51:50Speaker 1: haven't heard a lot of issues or distractions coming from
- 51:52Speaker 1: the Seattle Seahawks or the New England Patriots all season long.
- 51:56Speaker 1: You know, I think there was a little bit of
- 51:57Speaker 1: an issue. You know, some legal issues and New England
- 52:00Speaker 1: for the last couple of weeks. But we don't talk
- 52:02Speaker 1: about legal issues. We're not lawyers in this podcast. But
- 52:06Speaker 1: for the most part, the Seattle Seahawks have their rules.
- 52:10Speaker 1: They stay within the rules. Mike McDaniel, I mean, Mike
- 52:13Speaker 1: McDonald runs a very good program. Players have a lot
- 52:16Speaker 1: of respect for him. They know not to get out
- 52:18Speaker 1: of it. Outside of it, it's not thank goodness, it's
- 52:21Speaker 1: not an exciting city. It's not Las Vegas, it's not Houston,
- 52:24Speaker 1: it's not Miami. So there are less opportunities to be
- 52:28Speaker 1: susceptible too in San Jose, California. Not that they're you know,
- 52:32Speaker 1: you can find trouble anywhere if if you look hard enough.
- 52:35Speaker 1: But I think the week of the Super Bowl, guys understand, hey,
- 52:39Speaker 1: this is a one week trip. This is a one
- 52:41Speaker 1: week trip for a lifetime of glory. And I think
- 52:45Speaker 1: that's the conversation a lot of these veterans are having
- 52:48Speaker 1: with them. A lot of the leadership you talk about.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Leonard Williams has never been to a Super Bowl. I
- 52:52Speaker 1: don't know if he's ever been to a playoff game
- 52:54Speaker 1: before this season and had the kind of success so
- 52:57Speaker 1: DeMarcus Lawrence been to a playoff, has never gone to
- 52:59Speaker 1: the championship game. Are moved past the divisional Julian Love,
- 53:03Speaker 1: the same thing is true. Ernest Jones has won a
- 53:06Speaker 1: super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams, but again knows
- 53:10Speaker 1: what it takes. I think Sam Donald locked in. These
- 53:13Speaker 1: guys understand that this is their moment and you will
- 53:17Speaker 1: use sacrifice for another week to have a lifetime of glory.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Is it worth it to you? It's going out and
- 53:23Speaker 1: having a few drinks on a Wednesday really worth it?
- 53:26Speaker 1: During the super Bowl week? Like, is that really gonna
- 53:29Speaker 1: take you to where you need to go? Is that
- 53:31Speaker 1: worth it for what you're sacrificing and what you could
- 53:34Speaker 1: be able to achieve if you just stay locked in?
- 53:37Speaker 1: And I think that's the messaging, and that was the
- 53:39Speaker 1: messaging for us. You just got to lock in. Now.
- 53:42Speaker 1: There are a ton of distractions and things that are
- 53:44Speaker 1: different this week. When you land, there's gonna be a
- 53:46Speaker 1: lot of cameras, there's gonna be a lot of fanfare,
- 53:48Speaker 1: there's gonna be people in your face, you gotta slap hands,
- 53:51Speaker 1: and it is different. It's not the same as every
- 53:53Speaker 1: other week. So you can treat it like every other week,
- 53:55Speaker 1: But there are certain media obligations for guys that probably
- 53:58Speaker 1: aren't used to being at media, doing medias, having conversations.
- 54:02Speaker 1: So you're having those conversations. Hey, don't promise any wins,
- 54:05Speaker 1: don't guarantee anything, don't talk about their team sucks, don't
- 54:09Speaker 1: give any bulletin board material. We don't need that. Just
- 54:12Speaker 1: say the right things. They're a great opponent, great team,
- 54:15Speaker 1: happy to be here, looking forward to a great matchup.
- 54:18Speaker 1: That should be everybody down the line. And that's what
- 54:21Speaker 1: reporters are gonna be doing at the big media day.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Every single person, all sixty nine men on the roster
- 54:26Speaker 1: are gonna get a mic in front of their face.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Whether they're on the big stage or just off to
- 54:29Speaker 1: the side, they're gonna get a conversation. If somebody gives
- 54:32Speaker 1: a sound bite, it doesn't matter if you're Sam Donald
- 54:35Speaker 1: or the guy they are just picked up a couple
- 54:37Speaker 1: of weeks ago. If it's coming from a Seattle Seahawks player,
- 54:41Speaker 1: if he says, man, we feel really good about this matchup.
- 54:44Speaker 1: I don't think they match up well with us. It
- 54:47Speaker 1: would be the same coming from everybody. So I think
- 54:49Speaker 1: Mike McDonald and this staff is go are gonna emphasize
- 54:52Speaker 1: that to these players, And the same thing with Mike
- 54:54Speaker 1: Rabel and his staff, they're gonna emphasize, hey, let's not
- 54:57Speaker 1: give any bulletin board material, but hope lead the players.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Make it fun. You get to learn about the players.
- 55:02Speaker 1: You're going to see them on platforms like It's It's
- 55:05Speaker 1: it's different. It's a lot of pressure on these guys.
- 55:07Speaker 1: That's going to be different for them. But you got
- 55:09Speaker 1: to stay locked in, get your routine, get your massages,
- 55:12Speaker 1: and get back to your room.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Richard, we need you up there to give pr guidance
- 55:16Speaker 2: because man, oh man, I think that you going up
- 55:19Speaker 2: to these guys and saying, hey, I'll give you the
- 55:22Speaker 2: bulletin board material. Richard Sherman on the mic, It's it's
- 55:26Speaker 2: safe to say you would say every every wide receiver
- 55:28Speaker 2: on the Patriots is mediocre.
- 55:30Speaker 1: I mean you were.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Talking a little bit about it off air. I mean,
- 55:32Speaker 2: I know you'd like Keyshan Boody and Stefan Diggs and
- 55:36Speaker 2: to Mario Douglas, but man, those are some mediocre wide receivers.
- 55:40Speaker 1: Richard Mitchell, Mitchell, I say all the right things. Mitchell,
- 55:44Speaker 1: it's about great opponent, great team. I'm just you know,
- 55:49Speaker 1: looking forward to a great matchup. Yes, yes, yes, I'm here, Yes, yes.
- 55:54Speaker 2: I know everyone's excited. I've done I know you, I
- 55:57Speaker 2: know you're well equipped with knowledge in that environ, Met Richard,
- 56:01Speaker 2: I know everyone's anxious to hear who you're gonna pick,
- 56:03Speaker 2: and I feeling everyone knows who you're gonna pick. But
- 56:05Speaker 2: before we go onto your pick, we got some actual
- 56:08Speaker 2: breaking news that was just released. Here Clint Kubiak is
- 56:12Speaker 2: the rumors are reports are coming out he's going to
- 56:15Speaker 2: the Las Vegas Raiders, uh as their head coach. Do
- 56:19Speaker 2: you like that fit? If this holds true, Fernando Mendoz, Uh,
- 56:31Speaker 2: it's just like it's a rich Ashton gent.
- 56:35Speaker 1: It's a low quality draft, Mitchell, and it's a it's
- 56:39Speaker 1: a you're taking the guy that you have to take
- 56:41Speaker 1: because you know it's it's Wood Mendoza go in a
- 56:45Speaker 1: draft with with Jaydon Daniels and and and you know
- 56:49Speaker 1: and all those guys with with with Caleb Williams, Like,
- 56:52Speaker 1: would he go one in that draft? Would he go one?
- 56:54Speaker 1: If if somebody at Drake May was in the draft,
- 56:57Speaker 1: if if there were other guys available, in this raft
- 57:00Speaker 1: would he still be in this position? And so that's
- 57:04Speaker 1: the thing. And then again I'm talking about a quarterback
- 57:08Speaker 1: who I think did a great job, has all the build,
- 57:11Speaker 1: has all the potential. But again, in order for a
- 57:15Speaker 1: young quarterback to have success, it's it's offensive. And I
- 57:17Speaker 1: think they're getting a good offensive coach, a guy who
- 57:19Speaker 1: can get it put him in positions. But is there
- 57:21Speaker 1: enough talent around him to allow him to thrive. Sure,
- 57:26Speaker 1: there's brought Bauers, what is Ashtroon gent he gonna be
- 57:30Speaker 1: in in uh Kobiak scheme. Maybe that's a great scheme
- 57:34Speaker 1: for him, Maybe that unlocks him and what he can do,
- 57:37Speaker 1: But it's just not enough information right now. Mendoza may
- 57:41Speaker 1: be great, but is he set up for success with
- 57:43Speaker 1: his team? And I think that's the part that's difficult. Now,
- 57:46Speaker 1: if you said, hey, mendoz is going to Minnesota with
- 57:51Speaker 1: Kevin O'Connell and Justin Jefferson and Addison and a great
- 57:56Speaker 1: run game and a and a defense that can get
- 57:58Speaker 1: the job done, then you're like, Okay, I can see
- 58:01Speaker 1: it happening. He just got to do his part. But
- 58:03Speaker 1: when you ask for a lot of a rookie quarterback.
- 58:05Speaker 1: I think you set the expectations so hot high it's
- 58:08Speaker 1: hard to get there.
- 58:10Speaker 2: Last episode, you were talking about the forty nine ers
- 58:12Speaker 2: vacancy at DC. You were pounding the desk for none
- 58:15Speaker 2: other than Jim Schwartz, and they go off and hire
- 58:18Speaker 2: Raheem Morris as their DC. Richard, do you like this
- 58:21Speaker 2: fit with Raheem Morris and San Francisco?
- 58:25Speaker 1: Yeah? I like it. There's familiarity either he was gonna
- 58:28Speaker 1: be there, He's gonna be with the Rams. I mean,
- 58:29Speaker 1: he was gonna go back to his buddies. These guys
- 58:31Speaker 1: are all really good friends. McVay Shanahan the floor. All
- 58:36Speaker 1: these guys are are a small, close knit group of friends. Obviously,
- 58:41Speaker 1: Kyle and Raheem were together in Atlanta for a little
- 58:44Speaker 1: while and they've been together multiple spots. It's a good
- 58:47Speaker 1: fit guys. They have relationship. He has a ton of
- 58:50Speaker 1: respect for it. He likes to scheme that Raheem runs.
- 58:52Speaker 1: And I'm sure he'll keep Gus Bradley around in the
- 58:55Speaker 1: same role that he's been in, just continuing to just
- 58:58Speaker 1: be a voice of reason, somebody they can can pass
- 59:03Speaker 1: ideas off with, continue to challenge the concepts, continue to
- 59:07Speaker 1: challenge the guys, and I think it's a good fit.
- 59:09Speaker 1: I mean, Raheem is a great coach, is the reason
- 59:11Speaker 1: he was given a head coaching position. I'm disappointed that
- 59:14Speaker 1: Atlanta let him go. I thought he I thought he
- 59:16Speaker 1: had that team playing well at the end of the season.
- 59:18Speaker 1: It just didn't work out well enough. But it is
- 59:21Speaker 1: what it is.
- 59:22Speaker 2: And then finally, Richard, there's reports coming out that the
- 59:24Speaker 2: Sattle Seahawks are going to be sold after the Super Bowl.
- 59:27Speaker 2: I mean, it's safe to say they're selling at a
- 59:29Speaker 2: high if they win this game. Your thoughts on this, though, Well,
- 59:34Speaker 2: I want to be involved in that. You guys, you
- 59:36Speaker 2: gotta need an extra investor. I got I got a
- 59:38Speaker 2: few dollars, you know, putting in on that. But yeah,
- 59:41Speaker 2: you know, it was part of Paul's a state sale,
- 59:44Speaker 2: as part of the plan going in when Jody took
- 59:47Speaker 2: over the team. This was always the expectation that it
- 59:50Speaker 2: would get sold. It was it was actually written in
- 59:52Speaker 2: the agreement. I think the league.
- 59:54Speaker 1: They said the league finder five million dollars for not
- 59:56Speaker 1: selling it when when when it was supposed to be sold.
- 59:58Speaker 1: The league is pretty pretty he pretty pretty adamant about that.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Because when teams sail, it ups the value invaluation of
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: the other teams. You know, other teams get a piece
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: of certain things. And I think, you know, there's gonna
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: be a lot There's been a lot of money in Seattle. Uh.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: And you talk about the companies that have come up
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: in Seattle and the companies that have been a part
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: of this, uh, this great city, the Amazon's, the Microsoft's
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: of the world. I think, you know, those kind of
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: people will be involved and at least have to throw
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: their hat in the ring to try to be a
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: part of this. But it is what it is. It's
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: part of the business football. Paul Allen was a fantastic owner.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I think Jody did her best and did a great
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: job of just trying to continue his legacy and continue
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: what he wanted. And I think he'd be very proud
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: of the job she's done, the job John Snyder and
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: the staff have done getting them back to a Super Bowl.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: And I think, if this, if this is the end
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: of her tenure as a as an owner of the
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks, and they go off with a Super Bowl
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: champion championship and a Super Bowl ring and holding the
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: trophy up. I think that's a beautiful ending to a
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: fantastic story of the Allens and their ownership of the
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks and the city and the team. Will will
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: know nothing but love, enjoy and appreciation for their time
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: owning the team, and look forward to what's new next
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: in the future.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: Richard, It's finally that time. I'm gonna ask you a
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: very simple question. Who do you think is gonna win
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: the Super Bowl? And give me a final score. Give
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: me a final score, and I want some level of like,
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: you know, flow of the game, you know, like who's
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: gonna make an impact? Give me your full little breakdown here.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: So you're looking for the Richard Sherman podcast picks, That's
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: what you see. Exactly what I'm looking for. Here are
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: the Richard Sherman Podcast Super Bowl picks. All odds and
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: lines come from our partners at hard Rock Bet. We've
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: got the New England Patriots versus the Seattle Seahawks in
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. Hard Rock Bett as the Seattle Seahawks
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: as a four and a half point favorite over the
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: New England Patriots, and I got the Seahawks winning this game. Mitchell,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: you want to know how it's gonna go. Seattle Seahawks
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: are gonna win this game by running the football K nine,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: controlling it early and often. They're gonna drive down the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: field first drive of the game, set the tone. It's
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: gonna be a mixture. They're gonna try to double js
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: in and take him out of the game, but you're
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: gonna get a little bit of Barner, some K nine,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: little bit of Cooper Cup, then a Shaheed pass. Maybe
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: you might get a little sprinkled Bobo in there. Mitchell,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: just understand, it's gonna be a little bit of everybody.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: But Sam Darnold is gonna be a magician, a technician,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: all those things, and they're gonna go down and score.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: New England's gonna get the ball. Ain't gonna feel good,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: MVP candidate in the backfield, feel really good. The young
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: kid isn't overwhelmed. He's ready for this moment. But is
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: everybody else? Are they overwhelmed by the Seattle Seahawks defensive line.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: He was sacked fifteen times? They are, Mitchell. They start
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: kind of slow. They start sluggish in a lot of
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: these games. They again start sluggish against this great Seattle
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Seahawks defense. They punt the ball away it goes back
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: and forth. A few punts, punt, a few plays punts punt,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: you know, not three and outs, but not a lot
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: of scoring going on. You look up at halftime, Mitchell,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: it's thirteen to three. Seattle Seahawks are in the league.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: They're feeling really good about this game. They're in control.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: But New England doesn't go quietly into the night. They
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: come out after half, get the football, drive it down
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: the field, score a touchdown. Now it's ten to thirteen.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: It's the kind of dogfights you expected in the Super Bowl.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: It could go either way. But then Sam Donald shows
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: you this is a new Sam Donald, and I got
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Jackson Smith and Jigba and that is the way they
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: ride the rest of the second half. JSN has his way,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: has a day, Clint gets deep in his bag, and
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: the Seattle Seahawks walk away with a decisive victory twenty
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: four to ten over the New England Patriots in the
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Boocket. Great season for the New England Patriots
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: and Mike Rabeles rookie season, a Coach of the Year
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: type season, cementing themselves as a contender for many seasons
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: to come. With a young Super Bowl appearing quarterback, a
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: really good defense, and a really good foundation for the future.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: But the Seattle Seahawks walking away with this one is.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: The Richard Sherman podcast super Bowl Picks gonna possibly give
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: an MVP winner here.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: MVP of this game. You would think, oh Man, Jackson,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Smith and Jig. But it's got to be him, right,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: He's been fantastic. He's probably Offensive Player of the Year. No,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: it's gonna go to Sam Donald Mentell, Sam Darnald the guy,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: and that's gonna be the exclamation point on his his
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: resurgent season, his resurrection as a number three pick. It
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: doesn't seem as surprising anymore because he was the number
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: three pick in a draft. It seems obvious. But this
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: MVP throws him back in the conversation of elite quarterbacks.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: And I know everybody out there is like, he had
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: twenty turnovers this season? What about the twenty turnovers? But
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: winning matters in the National Football League, and this man
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: has won a lot in the last two years. You
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: gotta say that two different teams, twenty eight wins. I mean,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: at some point it gotta have something to do with him.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: And I feel like he gets an MVP to cap
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: that off, the first MVP of a quarterback in Seattle Seahawks'
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Super Bowl history.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Coast Sandar, I'm gonna join this Seattle Seahawks bandwagon with you, Richard.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: I love this team the way they're playing right now.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: They're the hotter team. I know New England's got few losses,
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: but the reality is Seattle's been rolling people and they've
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: been playing I think more challenging opponents along the way.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: I got Seattle winning this game. I got them covering
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: the spread, and I got K nine running away with
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: the MVP of this game. It sucks that the Seattle
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: Seahawks lost Zach Charbone, but I think K nine is
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: built for this moment right here. He's obviously an unrestricted
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: free agent after the season. He's got a lot to prove.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: Not only does he have motivation to win the Super Bowl,
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: but he's got motivation he get paid next season two.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: I think he runs away with two touchdowns in this game.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: I also like JSN to find the end zone. And finally,
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: on the other side of the ball, I like Hunter
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Henry Richard. I mean, this guy has been steady for
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: the New England Patriots. I think he's going to be
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: that veteran presidence that they need. Richard, I too think
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: that the New England Patriots are going to take a
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: little bit to find their footing. I got the Seattle
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Seahawks jumping out to a lead. The game inevitably gets tight,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: but I think that the Seattle Seahawks, I've scored these guys.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: I'm gonna go thirty one to twenty final score again
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: K nine Waltzon out Anna Clara with that MVP trophy
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: as well.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: I like that. I like that, Miss I like it
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: a lot.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Heck yeah, well, Richard, we are gonna be in San
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Francisco this week. Excited to see some of the fans
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: on the ground. Richard is always a pleasure sitting down
