- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Jason Candle, the UConn Football Coaches Show. Let's
- 0:02Speaker 1: get to it. Air Force this weekend. They're 5-2, 3-1
- 0:06Speaker 1: at home. Troy Calhoun has been there almost 20 years.
- 0:11Speaker 1: He wins a lot. And coach, they run a lot.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Is that hard to do in today's game in college football,
- 0:18Speaker 1: to do what they're doing?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Man, yeah, these service academies are built on discipline and detail.
- 0:26Speaker 3: And to be able to run that system.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You know, it's the forefront of to be able to
- 0:32Speaker 2: make that thing go, right? You know, you, tons of time,
- 0:38Speaker 2: energy put into that to make sure that operates at
- 0:40Speaker 2: a high level.
- 0:40Speaker 3: But I'm sure, you know, it all.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Comes down to, you know, player buy-in to, you know,
- 0:45Speaker 2: wanting to make the system great and being able to have,
- 0:48Speaker 2: you know, tough guys that, you know, really buy into
- 0:51Speaker 2: that process. And you have to be very selfless and unselfish.
- 0:54Speaker 2: You know, your play receiver there, you know, a good
- 0:57Speaker 2: game is a couple of catches. I don't pass it
- 0:59Speaker 2: very much. You have to be willing to go in
- 1:02Speaker 2: there and crack safeties and block linebackers and block corners
- 1:05Speaker 2: for 90% of the game.
- 1:08Speaker 3: But I think that.
- 1:10Speaker 2: No greater representation of what we want the people defending
- 1:13Speaker 2: our country to be is selfless people that really buy
- 1:16Speaker 2: into something bigger than what it is for individual accolades.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to have them. And I've always had
- 1:22Speaker 1: so much respect. We played Army over the years. We
- 1:25Speaker 1: played against Navy in the AAC. And every time you
- 1:27Speaker 1: play those guys, you got to keep yourself focused on
- 1:30Speaker 1: what you're doing, but you're looking out there thinking these
- 1:33Speaker 1: dudes are going to protect us against harm. And it's
- 1:37Speaker 1: such a sacrifice that they're making.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I mean, you, you just, you're in awe of, and
- 1:43Speaker 2: you're in, you have so much appreciation for what has
- 1:46Speaker 2: come before them and, and you know what they're going
- 1:49Speaker 2: through right now.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I mean, there's, you know, it's a tough thing.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's emotionally, it's a tough thing because you're rooting for
- 1:54Speaker 2: them to be very successful in everything they do. But
- 1:56Speaker 2: then on Saturday, you're going to play them and you
- 1:58Speaker 2: want to beat them for three and a half hours. So,
- 2:01Speaker 2: you know, it's a, yeah, you got a ton of
- 2:02Speaker 2: respect for them and what they've done. Coach Calhoun's built
- 2:04Speaker 2: a great program. He's been a picture of stability there
- 2:07Speaker 2: for a long time, you know, and it's a team
- 2:09Speaker 2: that in an organization that is really familiar with one another.
- 2:13Speaker 3: They don't give you anything.
- 2:14Speaker 2: You have to go earn it. They're not going to
- 2:15Speaker 2: beat themselves. They're not going to turn the ball over
- 2:17Speaker 2: a bunch. They're not going to commit a bunch of penalties. They're,
- 2:19Speaker 2: they're going to play clean football and to get a win,
- 2:22Speaker 2: we're going to have to do the same. We're going
- 2:24Speaker 2: to have to match that. We're going to have to
- 2:25Speaker 2: match their intensity to how the, how the game flow
- 2:27Speaker 2: goes and, and really execute at a high level.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Falcons lost their quarterback, Liam Zarka after four games, but
- 2:33Speaker 1: Evan matters to step right in. He's gained over 500
- 2:37Speaker 1: yards on the ground, almost seven yards at carry. What
- 2:40Speaker 1: kind of runner is he?
- 2:42Speaker 2: You know, they, they, they do a good job as
- 2:45Speaker 2: anybody recruiting to the system that they play.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Um, And I think.
- 2:51Speaker 2: It's hard to find plug-and-play players if you're always back
- 2:55Speaker 2: and forth on what your identity is.
- 2:57Speaker 3: But, yeah, they've created a real identity, and they've.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Gotten guys in position to play that spot where they
- 3:05Speaker 2: are dynamic runners and they're hard tackles and.
- 3:07Speaker 3: They're hard guys to bring down.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So they've got great depth of deposition, and injuries have
- 3:13Speaker 2: not slowed them down.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Yeah, a couple minutes left with Jason Candle. Falcons had
- 3:17Speaker 1: won four in a row. They beat UNLV scoring 41 points.
- 3:20Speaker 1: So it's not like they can't score, but they lost
- 3:23Speaker 1: to Wyoming on the road, 28-14, their second conference loss,
- 3:27Speaker 1: 18 yards in the air passing, but they run for
- 3:31Speaker 1: 430 in the game. So a time of possession, they're
- 3:35Speaker 1: going to have it as much as they can have it.
- 3:37Speaker 1: It might be 35 minutes. How does that impact what
- 3:40Speaker 1: you're going to do on your sideline?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, that's not one statistic that you can
- 3:46Speaker 2: during the course of the week, you're crazy to think
- 3:49Speaker 2: that you're going.
- 3:49Speaker 3: To win that one.
- 3:52Speaker 2: But again, it's about maximizing the opportunities that you get
- 3:55Speaker 2: and then trying to create a couple that maybe that
- 3:57Speaker 2: you didn't think you were going to get.
- 4:00Speaker 3: That's the recipe.
- 4:01Speaker 2: And so easier said than done, but we've got to
- 4:03Speaker 2: find a way to score points and then take the
- 4:07Speaker 2: ball away a couple of times.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah, they actually had a touchdown pass last week to
- 4:10Speaker 1: Wayne Grant, a five yarder. So they can score through
- 4:13Speaker 1: the air. On defense, Dallas Daly led them in tackling
- 4:18Speaker 1: Blake Fletcher. I mean, they got a bunch of tough
- 4:20Speaker 1: guys over there. What kind of defense do they line
- 4:23Speaker 1: up in most of the time?
- 4:25Speaker 2: They play a four down front most of the time.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know, they got, they got good stout, tough players
- 4:29Speaker 2: in the interior. I really love the Will Linebacker. You know,
- 4:33Speaker 2: I think that guy is as good as anybody we've
- 4:35Speaker 2: played at the second level of defense and they got
- 4:37Speaker 2: a couple of cover guys. So, I mean, they're, this
- 4:40Speaker 2: isn't going to look like seven on seven. When we
- 4:42Speaker 2: go out there, we got to go earn a victory.
- 4:44Speaker 3: If we can get one and we got to go play,
- 4:46Speaker 3: you know, really, like I said, really clean football.
- 4:48Speaker 1: All right, coach. We appreciate you. Get ready for that
- 4:51Speaker 1: thin air hydrate. That's what the players are telling me.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I got to start hydrating now because I don't want to,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I don't want to get dizzy or, you know what
- 4:58Speaker 1: I mean? Not be a hundred percent.
- 5:00Speaker 3: All right. Thanks.
- 5:02Speaker 1: We'll see you in the mountains up there, Colorado Springs.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Appreciate it. Go Huskies.
- 5:06Speaker 1: All right. That's Jason candle. We'll be back. More, we
- 5:09Speaker 1: talked to a couple of the Husky players when we
- 5:11Speaker 1: return on Learfield.
