Exodus 17
Exodus 17 read aloud, in a fresh direct translation from the Hebrew — plain modern English, nothing added.
Translator's notes:
• Exodus 17:15 — יְהֹוָה נִסִּי (Adonai nissi): chose "Adonai Nissi". Alternatives: Adonai is my banner. Why: the altar's name is kept as a name; nissi means "my banner/standard".
• Exodus 17:16 — יָד עַל־כֵּס יָהּ (yad al-kes Yah): chose "a hand is on Adonai's throne". Alternatives: a hand upon the throne of Yah. Why: the phrase is terse and contested; the short form Yah as the divine name is rendered Adonai.
