- 0:00Welcome to Fostering Faith. I am Tracie. I'm going
- 0:02to be your host and we are in the month of June.
- 0:04We are in the month of wisdom and Proverbs and
- 0:07this week we're going to be talking about wise
- 0:09choices and wise friends and one truth and Proverbs
- 0:12that will shape everyone's entire future. It's
- 0:16this your choices determine your direction and
- 0:19your friendships determining your choices. You
- 0:22show me your friends and I'll show you your future.
- 0:24You show me your daily decisions and I'll show
- 0:27you your destiny. Proverbs isn't a book of cute
- 0:30sayings. It isn't a giant flashing spiritual
- 0:33warning sign. It says be careful who you walk
- 0:35with. Be careful what you choose because it will
- 0:39shape your life. Wisdom doesn't fall on your
- 0:43head. It grows out of choices that you make and
- 0:46people that you let influence you. And this episode
- 0:49is about two of the most life -changing parts
- 0:52of wisdom. Your decisions and your friendships.
- 0:55Because nothing affects your peace, your purpose,
- 0:58your calling, or your spiritual life more than
- 1:01those two things. And so every choice is a seed.
- 1:05God created life with built and instruction.
- 1:09Choices lead to habits, which lead to direction,
- 1:12which leads to destiny. You never just end up
- 1:16someplace. You are led there by your choices.
- 1:20And Proverbs shows us that every choice falls
- 1:23into one of these two buckets. One. Your first
- 1:27bucket. A wise choice. They bring clarity, protection,
- 1:31blessing, stability, peace, favor, strength.
- 1:38Wise choices are usually harder at first. They're
- 1:41quieter. They're slower. They're more intentional.
- 1:45They're less emotional. They're more spiritual.
- 1:49They're more disciplined. But guess what? They
- 1:53produce life. And so look at your choices that
- 1:56you're making today. Is it in this bucket or
- 2:00are they in this other bucket? The foolish choices.
- 2:03They bring stress, regret, chaos, conflict, consequences,
- 2:10instability, wasted time. Foolish choices are
- 2:13usually fast, impulsive, emotionally driven,
- 2:19satisfying in the moment and regretted later.
- 2:23Proverbs 14 15 says the simple believe anything
- 2:26but the prudent give thought to their steps wise
- 2:29people think before they move and fools feel
- 2:33before they think and So oftentimes I'm asked
- 2:36to do something on the fly and I'm like, no I'm
- 2:39not rushing and I'm not calling myself wise But
- 2:41I'm a lot wiser than what I once was and no,
- 2:44I'm not gonna move. I'm not gonna ask hastily
- 2:47I'm gonna sit and pray on it. I need to know
- 2:49an answer. I cannot help you. I need to talk
- 2:51to the guy that knows what my plans for tomorrow
- 2:53is. I don't know what he has planned for me.
- 2:54And this doesn't line up. I have already done
- 2:56screwed up so many times. I am tired of walking
- 2:58in that way. And so I'm gonna sit. I'm gonna
- 3:01counsel the guy that has the answers and he knows
- 3:03what my tomorrow is gonna bring. And so if he
- 3:05has something planned for me, then I'm gonna
- 3:07ask him what I need to do in this situation.
- 3:10So if you need me to act real quick, I'm so sorry.
- 3:12And there are some moments like, so I'm an ICU
- 3:15nurse. So yes, impulsive quick, but I've been
- 3:17trained to do what those situations called for.
- 3:20But in most cases where you don't have to act
- 3:23impulsively, then I will sit and talk and I will
- 3:28seek wise counsel and I'm going to go into prayer
- 3:30about it because he is never going to lead me
- 3:32down the wrong path. And so your love, your enemy
- 3:35loves impulsive decisions. Why? Because impulsive
- 3:39decisions... Bypass prayer and wisdom and counsel.
- 3:45You don't have to do discernment. There's no
- 3:47self -control. And it bypasses scripture. Impulsiveness
- 3:51sounds like I'll deal with the consequences later.
- 3:53Have you guys said that? Oh, it feels right in
- 3:55the moment. Yeah, absolutely. We had this conversation
- 3:58with the teenagers in the car the other day.
- 3:59It feels right for the moment. But that later
- 4:02consequence is going to heap huge consequences.
- 4:06Don't want to think about it right now. How many
- 4:08times have we said that I don't want to think
- 4:10about what's gonna happen later I'm just gonna
- 4:12do it and That leads to where that leads to I'm
- 4:16just gonna go with my emotion. I'm just gonna
- 4:18I'm just gonna do it I'm just gonna go with my
- 4:19emotions I'm just I love him or I love her or
- 4:22this sounds like a really good idea and the king
- 4:24the carrot was really big And so I just went
- 4:26for it But proverb says a wise person fears the
- 4:29Lord and shuns evil but a fool is hot -headed
- 4:32and reckless in 1416 Reckless decisions create
- 4:38preventable pain and wisdom slows down enough
- 4:41to let God speak first. And so a habit of a wise
- 4:45person, they can pre -decide. Wise people don't
- 4:50wait until temptation hits. They make decisions
- 4:53before the moment. They don't text that person.
- 4:57I don't go to that party. I don't date people
- 5:00who don't love Jesus. I don't gossip. I don't
- 5:03apologize quickly. I guard my peace. I don't
- 5:07compromise my standards. I choose God's ways.
- 5:12Even when I don't feel like it. And I go back
- 5:15up there. I apologize quickly. It's not the fact
- 5:18that you don't apologize quickly. You do actually
- 5:20apologize quickly because you don't harbor that
- 5:21hate. You don't harbor those feelings of resentment
- 5:24in our heart. Because if our heart is full of
- 5:25resentment and anger, then there's no place for
- 5:28God's love in there. And so we do apologize quickly.
- 5:31And so friendships are spiritual forming. And
- 5:35so walk with wise and you become wise. And so
- 5:38Proverbs 13 20. Friendships are not casual. They're
- 5:41spiritual. You become who you are around. Conversations
- 5:45shape beliefs and beliefs shape conversations
- 5:47and decisions shape destiny. Every friend is
- 5:52either a ladder or a weight. A wisdom, a voice
- 5:56of wisdom or a voice of foolishness. Someone
- 6:00who sharpens you or someone that dulls you. Proverbs
- 6:04says it plainly, bad company corrupts good character.
- 6:08In 1 Corinthians 5 .13, you cannot outgrow the
- 6:13influence of your inner circle. Think about that.
- 6:16Who is your three? And yes, Jesus had all the
- 6:20people. He had his 12 disciples, but he had his
- 6:22three guys that he went to. Who's your inner
- 6:25circle? Who are those people? Are they speaking
- 6:27wisdom into your life? Are they speaking foolishness
- 6:29into your life? Are they sharpening you? Are
- 6:30they building you up? Are they just like letting
- 6:33you just be so dull and they're not sharpening
- 6:35you? They're not telling you whenever you're
- 6:37wrong or they're not... giving you advice to
- 6:39move further, to move deeper. Are they pulling
- 6:42you away from what God has for you? And so look
- 6:45at your inner circle. It is so important to know
- 6:48that who you are around really will influence
- 6:51you. Oh, I'm just hanging out with Jesus, hanging
- 6:53out with sinners. Absolutely he did, but he didn't
- 6:56let them influence his decisions. And so you
- 6:58want to be brave enough and absolutely we are
- 7:01meant to be disciples and we are meant to be
- 7:03fishers of men and not watchers of the aquarium.
- 7:05But you have to be strong in your faith and you
- 7:07have got to be rooted. And so those that don't
- 7:11know Christ and that are living in a life that
- 7:14is not godly, then we want to make sure that
- 7:17we are rooted and that we're not going to be
- 7:19influenced by their decisions to pull us away
- 7:22from what God has for us. And so there are three
- 7:25types of friends in Proverbs. One. The wise friends.
- 7:29These are the ones that you need. These people
- 7:31love God. Love truth. They challenge you. They
- 7:36pray for you. They speak life over you. They
- 7:39hold you accountable. They celebrate your growth.
- 7:42They don't compare themselves. And they want
- 7:45what God's best is for you. Wise friends will
- 7:50save you from years of regret. Two. The foolish
- 7:54friend. These people should not be potentially
- 7:59your inner three. These people are inconsistent,
- 8:04make impulsive decisions and choices, encourage
- 8:08compromise, avoids responsibility, drains your
- 8:12energy, distracts you from your focus, pulls
- 8:16you off a God's path. You can love foolish people,
- 8:20but you cannot let them lead you. You can. People
- 8:24do. and then end up regretting it later. And
- 8:28three, the wicked influencer. You've got to avoid
- 8:31these people. Look at your life. Take inventory.
- 8:34And so people talk about spring cleaning. Maybe
- 8:36do a spring cleaning of your life, your inventory,
- 8:39the people that you are allowing to speak into
- 8:41your life. And so we talk about this all the
- 8:43time. You have got to guard your gates. You got
- 8:44to guard your ears. You got to guard your eyes.
- 8:46You got to guard your mouth. And asking God for
- 8:48discernment, asking God to remove the people
- 8:50that are not there to serve you, asking God who,
- 8:53hey, give me some more godly friends. Ask him
- 8:55to give you godly friends, absolutely. Ask him
- 8:57to remove the people that he does not want in
- 9:00your life. And so, reasons and seasons and lifetimes,
- 9:03there are people in your life for a reason, there's
- 9:04people in your season, in your life for a season,
- 9:06and you were there to help them or do whatever,
- 9:09but ask God to remove those people that are not
- 9:11meant to be in your life, please. And so, the
- 9:14wicked influence are people that mock God. They
- 9:16love sin. They pressure you spiritually. They
- 9:20manipulate you. They gossip. They create division
- 9:23and they celebrate what destroys you. Proverb
- 9:26warms repeatedly about this. Do not associate
- 9:29with those who give to anger. Do not set foot
- 9:32on the path of the wicked and do not follow the
- 9:34crowd in doing wrong. Everyone else is doing
- 9:37it or everyone else is listening to that. Everyone
- 9:40else is doing this. I don't care. No, I'm not
- 9:43going to follow the crowd. We are set apart.
- 9:45We are not of This earth our citizenship is not
- 9:49of earth. It is in heaven And so we do not follow
- 9:51the crowd in doing what is wrong because it's
- 9:53the thing to do. It's on trend Not because god
- 9:56wants to isolate you because he wants to protect
- 9:59you He put up guardrails for a reason our path
- 10:02is narrow because he is protecting you. He's
- 10:05protecting me you your family He loves you And
- 10:10relationships are either raising you or lowering
- 10:13you ask yourself these questions Who gets the
- 10:16best version of you? Who influences your decisions?
- 10:20Who shapes your standards? Who are you secretly
- 10:23wanting an approval from? Who pushes you closer
- 10:27to God? Who's pulling you into distraction? Who
- 10:31challenges your growth? Who feeds your faith?
- 10:35Who feeds your weaknesses? Your friends are not
- 10:38neutral. They're directional. And wisdom in friendships
- 10:42looks like healthy boundaries. Honesty. Maturity.
- 10:47Consistency. Mutual effort. It takes two for
- 10:50a friendship. It's mutual. Forgiveness. Accountability.
- 10:55Respect. Vulnerability. Shared values. Shared
- 10:59direction. Proverbs 27 -17 says, iron sharpens
- 11:04iron. You cannot sharpen iron with foam. You
- 11:07can't sharpen it with plastic. If your circle
- 11:10is soft, your character will be too. And so how
- 11:14do we choose wise friends? How do we choose people
- 11:17that are what we're gonna look for? You look
- 11:21for their fruit. Look for what they're growing
- 11:23off their tree. Look for their integrity. Look
- 11:26for humility. Look for responsibility. Look for
- 11:30their spiritual hunger. Look for their emotional
- 11:32stability. Are they all over the place? That's
- 11:36probably where you're gonna head up. Look for
- 11:38consistency. Look for accountability. A wise
- 11:42friend? won't be perfect, but they will be growing.
- 11:47And so how do you become a wise friend? It goes
- 11:51both ways. Be the person who listens, apologizes,
- 11:55prays, encourage, gives truth gently, shows up,
- 12:02stays loyal, walks in integrity, grows spiritually,
- 12:06and chooses wisdom even when it's hard. You attract
- 12:11what you are. And so, your reflection questions
- 12:15for this week. And we hope that you guys are
- 12:16utilizing the Fostering Faith Media website.
- 12:19There's workbooks on there. Super plain, Jane,
- 12:21because I hate to waste ink. And so there are
- 12:23just black and white pages. And we are potentially
- 12:25going to be growing a curriculum for our youth
- 12:28at my church. And so those pages will be colorful.
- 12:31But just for simple clarity, they are black and
- 12:34white because I like not wasting ink. And so
- 12:37in your workbook, it says, which friendships
- 12:39in your life are wise. Which ones are pulling
- 12:43me away from God's path? Ask the Holy Spirit.
- 12:46Let him guide you. Who is strengthening you?
- 12:48Who is draining you? Who supports your calling?
- 12:50Who threatens your growth? Who challenges you
- 12:53spiritually? Who encourages your compromise?
- 12:57This may be the most important question of the
- 12:59month. Write one wise choice that you will make
- 13:04this week and one friendship decision, whether
- 13:06it be a boundary, a step back, or a lean in.
- 13:10What will you commit to? Stop hanging out with
- 13:13unhealthy environments. Start responding slower.
- 13:17End toxic cycles. Join that small group. Talk
- 13:20to a mentor. Set boundaries. Apologize to a friend.
- 13:24Stop seeking validation and spend more time with
- 13:28wise people. What could it be? One wise choice
- 13:32can change your direction. One wise friendship
- 13:34can change your destiny. And so we hope that
- 13:37this message encouraged you. Send it to some
- 13:39friends send it to your friend circle and that
- 13:42way you guys are Pruning your friend group you
- 13:46are growing your friend group that you guys are
- 13:48growing the Christ that the way that Christ wants
- 13:50you guys to grow And so sit with this and so
- 13:54if this message encouraged you leave a comment
- 13:56Let's grow in a community together because we
- 13:58are here fostering our faith together. We don't
- 14:00have it all figured out, but we are walking because
- 14:02this is not a sprint. This is a marathon and
- 14:05it's not about progression. It's about it's not
- 14:08about perfection. It's about progression. And
- 14:11so we would love to pray for you guys this week.
- 14:12And so dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much
- 14:14for today. Thank you so much for yesterday. Thank
