- 0:00Speaker 1: Final segment with coach Orriema here on the Women's Basketball
- 0:02Speaker 1: Coaches Show, is we preview the twenty four twenty five Huskies.
- 0:07Speaker 1: After our game Sunday, you and I both went to Toscano.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I worked, you watched as are a guest with you
- 0:14Speaker 1: were in Mike's office after the game. But you know,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I talked to Mike about that on the Coaches Show
- 0:20Speaker 1: last night with him. You two have quite the bond,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and I was intrigued, and it makes sense some of
- 0:26Speaker 1: the things that both sports do as far as practice
- 0:29Speaker 1: and drills and stuff you can do for the other way.
- 0:32Speaker 2: The exception is one's ice and ones a hardwood.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a little it's a little bit
- 0:43Speaker 3: different in the physicality of it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Sure about that.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Yeah, in some games anyway, sometimes our games look like
- 0:52Speaker 3: hockey games. But now I've I've been a big fan,
- 0:59Speaker 3: I know, for a long long time of hockey in general.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But you know, back when Betty Kirtland was coaching here,
- 1:05Speaker 3: you know, the and cav and I have you know,
- 1:10Speaker 3: been close since he got here actually, and we spent
- 1:14Speaker 3: a lot of time together, and.
- 1:17Speaker 4: I you know, I love you know, the way he
- 1:20Speaker 4: the way he coaches.
- 1:21Speaker 3: The way he he has very you know, I'm sure
- 1:27Speaker 3: there's a difference in practice, like most coaches, but like
- 1:31Speaker 3: a lot of hockey coaches. You know, he's got a
- 1:33Speaker 3: really really good demeanor at you know, on the bench.
- 1:36Speaker 3: But a lot of their a lot of their schemes,
- 1:38Speaker 3: a lot of what they're doing, you know, is you know,
- 1:41Speaker 3: you think about it's the same number of players, right,
- 1:43Speaker 3: it's five on five, right.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And.
- 1:48Speaker 3: You've got you know, three, three attacking players, two defensemen,
- 1:53Speaker 3: but all five can be in the attack.
- 1:56Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:56Speaker 3: The wings in the center have to have to get
- 1:59Speaker 3: back and play some defense. The defenseman can be offensive players.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Uh.
- 2:04Speaker 3: The way the pup moves is similar to the way
- 2:06Speaker 3: the basketball moves. You know, you don't want it to
- 2:08Speaker 3: stick anywhere. You know, some of the cuts, some of
- 2:11Speaker 3: the cuts are very similar. So I I enjoy listening
- 2:17Speaker 3: to him describe the game. And uh, and I'm getting
- 2:21Speaker 3: a chance to watch the best hockey league in the country.
- 2:23Speaker 3: So it's uh, you know, it's it's it's a lot
- 2:26Speaker 3: of fun. More than anything.
- 2:27Speaker 4: It was.
- 2:28Speaker 3: It was great to just get out of our world
- 2:30Speaker 3: and get into their world. And and I love the building,
- 2:33Speaker 3: and I love the energy in that crowd. It's it's
- 2:36Speaker 3: it's just a great environment.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a lot of fun. Spacing too, I would
- 2:40Speaker 1: think is a big factor in both.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, they're they have a lot of room
- 2:45Speaker 3: and they they have to use it wisely, and they
- 2:53Speaker 3: they have to have the same chemistry that you have
- 2:56Speaker 3: as a basketball coach. As a basketball team, you know,
- 2:59Speaker 3: people work together. I do remember back in the day,
- 3:04Speaker 3: someone asked me my vision of a great basketball, perfect basketball,
- 3:08Speaker 3: and I've always said Oilers. You know, the Edmonton Oilers
- 3:11Speaker 3: when Gretzky played, probably had the greatest chemistry of any
- 3:17Speaker 3: five people that I've ever seen, having to you know,
- 3:21Speaker 3: be on a court or be on an ice, you know.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And he's got a couple freshmen, you know, down the
- 3:27Speaker 3: stretch the other night, you know, and overtime when they
- 3:31Speaker 3: killed that penalty, you know, when the six on four,
- 3:35Speaker 3: you know, that was huge, right, and they killed that one,
- 3:38Speaker 3: and then they's got the shorthanded goal, which is amazing,
- 3:41Speaker 3: and then they killed another one where it was you know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: four on three, and I don't know that time, Yeah,
- 3:46Speaker 3: I don't know that people can truly understand how hard
- 3:49Speaker 3: that is to do. When you're shorthanded and one shorthanded
- 3:54Speaker 3: goal and two short handed and play defense. And to
- 3:58Speaker 3: have a couple of freshmen out there. I just, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 3: I every time I go over there, you know, I
- 4:04Speaker 3: see a new kid that I that I want to follow.
- 4:07Speaker 3: And uh, he's got this little dude now, man's number eleven.
- 4:10Speaker 3: He's got this funny last night. Yeah, yeah, yeah, uh yeah,
- 4:16Speaker 3: that guy is exciting man right now. He's only a freshman,
- 4:19Speaker 3: and he he keeps both teams in the game, which
- 4:22Speaker 3: I really like, you know.
- 4:25Speaker 2: He and Tray Scott.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Tray Scott has not come out of the lineup since
- 4:28Speaker 1: Cat put him in the Sacred Heart game. All right,
- 4:30Speaker 1: you've got bu On Thursday, Melissa Graves played in her
- 4:34Speaker 1: name for Muffa McGrath.
- 4:35Speaker 2: But I noticed the name Jason Pellham.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Not only was he a practice player at a walk
- 4:40Speaker 1: on for the guys, he used to be a practice
- 4:42Speaker 1: player for you too.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Yeah, he's got the whole U kind of experience, right.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good tible to have.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Guy. We've got them all over the place. You know.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Uh, Shay's got you know, Shay's got one down down
- 4:56Speaker 3: at Vanderbilt.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:59Speaker 3: So we're you know, we're looking forward to having bu
- 5:03Speaker 3: come down and I'm sure though, you know, they'll be
- 5:07Speaker 3: excited to playoffs. You know, they'll be Yah, we'll be
- 5:10Speaker 3: at the Xcel hopefully they'll be a big crowd, and
- 5:14Speaker 3: our kids, i'm sure will be a little bit nervous
- 5:16Speaker 3: and and but you know, playing down there, it's big crowd.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You're seventeen, eighteen years old and you've always wanted to
- 5:27Speaker 3: play at Yukon and now there you are, And so
- 5:31Speaker 3: it's gonna be fun watching our kids enjoy themselves out there.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and they have a little spin fire Alex Gannaros
- 5:37Speaker 1: who was five of eight from three career over forty
- 5:41Speaker 1: from three. And they're trying to replace a six to
- 5:44Speaker 1: four Patriot League Player of the Year from a year ago.
- 5:46Speaker 2: So that they were with a young group, so.
- 5:48Speaker 1: In a sense, I mean, not to the level that
- 5:50Speaker 1: you are, but they're trying to do the same thing.
- 5:53Speaker 1: At be you trying to replace a really good post player.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's you know, that's pretty much the life
- 6:00Speaker 3: of college coaches.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:02Speaker 3: You're gonna, uh, you know, you're gonna have some kids
- 6:05Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden you're gonna lose them, transfers, graduation,
- 6:10Speaker 3: you know, whatever you want to whatever you want to say,
- 6:13Speaker 3: but you know, yeah, and and there's a lot of
- 6:18Speaker 3: good teams in the country, and it doesn't matter what
- 6:20Speaker 3: league they're in, it doesn't matter what level they're playing at.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And and this goes to show you that, uh, you
- 6:28Speaker 3: can have a player of the Year in the Patriot
- 6:30Speaker 3: League and then the following year they can be a
- 6:32Speaker 3: starter in a you know, Power five league or something
- 6:35Speaker 3: like that.
- 6:36Speaker 4: So there's there's a lot of really good players out there.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And I'm sure it's not it's not going to be uh,
- 6:42Speaker 3: you know, let's call them up and mail in the score,
- 6:46Speaker 3: you know.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Right before we break and wrap things up with GINO.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Have you had a chance to talk to Nika since
- 6:50Speaker 1: her surgery? And I feel awesome for her non contact play.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I know, I know it happens so often now, you know,
- 6:58Speaker 3: it's it's uh, it's just sad to see when it does.
- 7:04Speaker 3: But yeah, I talked to her. Matter of fact, does
- 7:08Speaker 3: I was talking to her. The nurse came in to
- 7:10Speaker 3: tell her that time for her to hang up because
- 7:13Speaker 3: they're wheeling her into the upbrading room. And and then
- 7:16Speaker 3: I you know, I got a chance to talk to
- 7:17Speaker 3: her afterwards, and she's got a great spirit about her,
- 7:20Speaker 3: you know, as you would expect.
- 7:22Speaker 4: You know, she's upbeat, she's uh, she's excited about.
- 7:26Speaker 3: The you know, the the rehab and and I can't
- 7:31Speaker 3: wait to get back. And she's attacking it the same
- 7:35Speaker 3: way she attacks life, you know, and that's what makes
- 7:37Speaker 3: Nika Nika exactly.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Gito is always thank you. We'll talk to your Thursday.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Night, all right, Bob, very much.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Yep, you bet you. That wraps up Gito's segment.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Player to be announced coming up next on the UKON
