Transcript
- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:10First of all, keep him out of the light.
- 0:12He hates bright light, especially sunlight.
- 0:14It'll kill him. Second, don't give him any
- 0:16water, not even to drink. But the most important rule, the
- 0:20rule you can never forget. No matter how much he cries, no
- 0:23matter how much he begs, never feed him after midnight.
- 0:28Merry Christmas and welcome to What's Your Least Favorite Scary
- 0:31Movie? The podcast where we talk about
- 0:32the good, the bad, the ugly and the absurd and all of our
- 0:35favorite scary movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:38movie rightfully has its fan base.
- 0:40Even if we don't always get it. My name is Travis.
- 0:43My name is Jesse and hey, it's Christmas time.
- 0:47But that also means it's winter time, which means if you are a
- 0:50long time listener of the show, you know that I am liable to get
- 0:53sick. And I've been sick and barely
- 0:57audible for the past week or so. So we are recording this live on
- 1:01Christmas Eve because this is the first day since about,
- 1:05honestly, like last Tuesday or Wednesday where I can actually
- 1:09talk enough that we'll be able to get through an episode.
- 1:12This is going to be a live episode.
- 1:13We won't have time to edit it to get it out for Christmas
- 1:16tomorrow. So have fun, enjoy our flub UPS.
- 1:20We'll have a good time together. Yeah, it's all in the good
- 1:23holiday spirit. Yeah, you're good for one of
- 1:25these. Every single winner.
- 1:27Like you always lose your voice at least one time.
- 1:29At least once, sometimes twice if I'm villain real fancy.
- 1:33OK, cool. Well, yeah, we're going to be
- 1:35talking about Gremlins, a Christmas horror movie again.
- 1:39But hey, you know what? I got a present for everybody.
- 1:41Guess what we have this week? Did we do a poll?
- 1:44I did a poll. You did a poll.
- 1:47That's right. All right, So last week we
- 1:50talked about Final Destination too, and I asked everybody, your
- 1:53time's up. How are you going out?
- 1:55So there are four options. Log truck me, glass crush me,
- 2:00elevator decapitate me or hospital explode me.
- 2:06Yeah. 27% say lock truck me, 0% says glass crush me, 18% says
- 2:14elevator decapitate me, and 55% say hospital explode me.
- 2:20All right, so me, I'm going with hospital explode me, because
- 2:24that's probably the closest I'll ever get to being Michael Myers.
- 2:27I I knew you were going to go there.
- 2:29I mean, of course. I mean, I'm looking at him right
- 2:31here. He's wearing a Christmas hat
- 2:32even. He's like on fire.
- 2:34I think I will also go with hospital explode me just because
- 2:37it generally seems like the quickest, yeah.
- 2:41I think the decapitation. Oh no, no, hers.
- 2:44Is pretty drunk now. I'm already afraid of elevators.
- 2:47Yeah, the glass crushing was pretty quack, quack pretty
- 2:50quick. Yeah, but also, I also have a
- 2:54lot of fear of that after the end of Saw 5 there, Luke from
- 2:59Gilmore Girls. Yeah, man.
- 3:02There's a lot of being crushed is not fun.
- 3:06It does not. Look like.
- 3:07Hey, hey, the plus side of hospital exploding.
- 3:11You're already at the hospital. Bada Bing, bada boom.
- 3:14You're going to, you're going to die, but you have a chance.
- 3:17OK, that was a weird energy to take it with, but it's fine.
- 3:22The only other announcement that I have is that we are going to
- 3:26try and record our bonus episode for our Budgeteer bubbies over
- 3:30on the Patreon this weekend. I'm not going to say what we're
- 3:34doing just yet because we have an idea in mind, but we'll be
- 3:37able to find out really quickly if it works or not.
- 3:39So we might have to pivot last second.
- 3:41So if you're a Budgeteer bubby, or if you want to buy that
- 3:44episode on its own, we have that option available whenever that
- 3:47comes up. Just keep an eye on it over the
- 3:49weekend up through the 31st. You can find the link to our
- 3:53Patreon at the very bottom of our show notes.
- 3:55Yeah, exactly. OK, so are we ready to talk
- 3:58about gremlins? Yeah.
- 4:00Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. All right, girl, I've had that
- 4:04stuck in my head since Friday night.
- 4:06Yeah, we were talking about this.
- 4:07I I confused about the Goosebumps theme, Jesse says.
- 4:10It's not. Yeah, goosebumps, says Dun Dun,
- 4:12Dun Dun. But.
- 4:14That sounded exactly like what you just did, just like a
- 4:17different, like a difference in one beat.
- 4:19It's different. Plus the goosebumps has like the
- 4:21dog barking. OK, that's the only difference
- 4:25in my ears. It was a Gremlins that released
- 4:29June 8th, 1984. Weird timing for a movie like
- 4:34that. Yeah, and I actually don't have
- 4:36any information on why it came out on June 8th.
- 4:38I got distracted by other things.
- 4:39That is weird. I guess they were.
- 4:42They were probably bought banking on being like a summer
- 4:44blockbuster. Yeah, I don't.
- 4:45I don't fully know. We watched it.
- 4:48We have a DVD of it. I got it for Travis a few
- 4:50Christmas ago because he'd never seen it.
- 4:52So I was like stocking stuff, but you can stream it right now
- 4:56on HBO Max, Hulu, Disney Plus follower, YouTube or any of
- 5:02those apps that have like the add-ons for HBO.
- 5:05You can also rent it through Google TV, Apple TV or Vin Dinko
- 5:08at home. Written by Chris Columbus,
- 5:10directed by Joe Dante, music by Jerry Goldsmith, special effects
- 5:14makeup by Stephen Norrington and the creature design was done by
- 5:17Chris Wallace. Starring Zach Galligan as Billy,
- 5:21Phoebe Cates as Kate, Hoyt Axton as Randall Peltzer, France Lee
- 5:26McCain as Lynn Peltzer, Mushroom as Barney, Howie Mandel as
- 5:32Gizmo. What Frank Welker, A stripe and
- 5:36other mug wise and Gremlins and I There are so many people that
- 5:42did Mogwai and Gremlin voices in this that I couldn't write them
- 5:45all down. I haven't screenshot but.
- 5:47Howie Mandel did the Voice of Gizmo.
- 5:50What the fuck? Fred Newman, Mark Dodson,
- 5:54Michael Winslow, Peter Colon. Not that.
- 5:57Peter Colon, Bob Bergen. Michael Sheehan, Bob Holt and
- 6:08Jim Cummings. Joe Dante.
- 6:10Even so, we had a lot of Gremlin and Mogwai voices to go around.
- 6:18I love their little voices too. Yeah.
- 6:20And just I, I'll go ahead and give this little fun fact.
- 6:23Now most of the Gremlin lines were just actor driven, like
- 6:29they were just allowed to say and react.
- 6:31Whenever they wanted to. Yeah.
- 6:33So I like to imagine all of them gathering around in the
- 6:36recording to you and say, so we agree, we're going to say Gizmo
- 6:39Kaka, right, like we're going to.
- 6:40That's going to be our chant. Every time I heard that I keep
- 6:43thinking of that future ROM episode with the tiny Omicron
- 6:47Percy on where he's like Kaka she's like we're going to have
- 6:50to bleep that. OK, oh, time for our favorite.
- 6:58See, this is the perils of reporting live.
- 7:00I'm cracking under pressure. All right.
- 7:03Time for our favorite game on the show.
- 7:04Budget or bug dead? I'm going to say budget because
- 7:11it's got the backing of Steven Spielberg.
- 7:13You are correct, $11 million budget and that's the 1984
- 7:18money. It made 12.5 million on its
- 7:21opening box office weekend. A Worldwide Girls of
- 7:25165,000,000. IMDb scores 7.3 out of 10.
- 7:30That's fitting. Yes.
- 7:31Yeah, that's great. Because it's this classic for a
- 7:34reason. Yeah.
- 7:35Yeah, it is. I picked a theme from 1984 and
- 7:38it seemed like there was something kind of common going
- 7:41on, which is small but deadly. OK, yeah.
- 7:45Oh, I see. The first movie is actually one
- 7:49we talked about on the show, and funny enough, all of these have
- 7:51like, remakes, which wasn't intentional.
- 7:55Yeah, it wasn't intentional, but it just kind of had a remake.
- 7:57Slash requels. OK, so the first one is Children
- 8:00of the Corn. OK, yeah, little, little Isaac.
- 8:04Yep, that released March 9th, 1984 had a budget of 800,000, a
- 8:09worldwide gross of 14.5 million, and a 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb.
- 8:14We've talked about that on the show.
- 8:15That was one of our very early episodes, so if you want to
- 8:18flash to the past, there you go. Yes, it is there. 2nd movie
- 8:23we've also talked about on the show a little bit more recently
- 8:26though, Toxic Avenger. Oh cool.
- 8:28'Cause Melvin. Little time, Melvin, He was a
- 8:30little tiny boy and he got toxiced into being on the Toxic
- 8:34Avenger. That actually premiered at the
- 8:37Cannes Film Festival May 15th, 1984.
- 8:40Had a bunch of yeah, right. Because like, it showed up on my
- 8:441984 films and then when I clicked it as to 1985 and I was
- 8:47like, OK, well, clearly it had a premiere somewhere.
- 8:50And then I got to that and I was like Cannes.
- 8:53OK. You know what?
- 8:54Yeah. It's cinema.
- 8:55Get it? Get it, Lloyd?
- 8:58It had a budget of 475,000, a worldwide gross of unknown, and
- 9:03an IMDb score of 6 point ten. 6.2 out of 10.
- 9:06OK, sorry, I'm trying not to do that as much as I can avoid it.
- 9:10You're fine. And the third movie?
- 9:13Not when we've seen that I'm familiar with a small child
- 9:17being the problem in it. Firestarter.
- 9:20Oh yeah, yeah, I'm surprised you're not familiar, isn't it
- 9:22Stephen King? I you say this like I've read
- 9:24every single Stephen King book. The man.
- 9:26Has not many. Books.
- 9:27Yeah, he has so many books, Travis.
- 9:29Yeah, I know. It's just always like the big
- 9:31ones. It's an unreasonable amount of
- 9:33books. But I expect you to read the big
- 9:35ones. Firestarter released May 11th,
- 9:391984. Budget of 12 million worldwide
- 9:42Gross of 17,000,000. IMDb score 6.1 out of 10.
- 9:46OK, I have a few tag lines. I didn't write down the stupid
- 9:51ones. The ones that were like Steven
- 9:52Spielberg presents. That's fair.
- 9:54And there's also like one from a re release in 1985.
- 9:57I didn't write that one down. So I've got the main ones,
- 10:00though. The one that's on the poster is
- 10:02cute, clever, mischievous, intelligent, dangerous.
- 10:05And then there's an alternate version with all of that and
- 10:08then crossed out as we're here. OK, I like that one.
- 10:12Though you can't get burned seeing gremlins.
- 10:15You can't get burned seeing gremlins.
- 10:18I wonder, I don't know if it was a reference to another movie
- 10:21that was out at the time. I maybe it was a reference to
- 10:23Firestarter since it was like a month after that one came out
- 10:28it. Could have.
- 10:30Been what you see isn't always what you get.
- 10:33I like that. That's good.
- 10:35The gremlins are coming. They didn't obey the rules.
- 10:42He tried, he just fell into accidentally.
- 10:45It's understandable. Don't get him wet, keep him out
- 10:49of light, and never feed him after midnight.
- 10:52No. So those are our tag lines.
- 10:54OK. Those are pretty good.
- 10:56Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not bad.
- 10:58OK, I've got a few fun facts. One thing I actually, I ended up
- 11:03screenshotting a few things because there was just a lot to
- 11:06work with. OK, the notion of gremlins first
- 11:10conceived in the 1920s. It was talking, it was a joke
- 11:13about aircraft failures, saying that there were little monsters,
- 11:15little gremlins that were causing them.
- 11:17That's what Dick Miller was talking about.
- 11:18Yeah, OK. So that was kind of an ongoing
- 11:21thing. And then it was in a book by
- 11:23Roald Dahl called The Gremlins that came out in 1943.
- 11:28Walt Disney almost ended up making a movie about it.
- 11:31Bugs Bunny did have a Gremlins themed cartoon.
- 11:34It just Joe Dante had read the book The Gremlins and he said it
- 11:39it did have some influence on him in the film.
- 11:41So I thought that was pretty interesting.
- 11:44Like it's just taking kind of an urban legend kind of thing as a
- 11:49concept people were familiar with and turning it into a full
- 11:52movie. That's.
- 11:52One of those ones that I feel like it's also just like that
- 11:55era. Like I don't think like that.
- 11:57I would have never like gathered any of that stuff.
- 12:00Yeah, today, watching. It yes, definitely very of the
- 12:03time very aware of what it's doing similar to like a horror
- 12:07comedy thing, which was another thing that they mentioned they
- 12:11had this horror comedy thing. Chris Columbus actually wrote
- 12:14this script. It's just a spec script, you
- 12:16know, just kind of a demonstration of his work to try
- 12:18and get in at other studios. Steven Spielberg read the script
- 12:21and he really liked it and he actually wanted to turn it into
- 12:24a project. He picked Joe Dante who was kind
- 12:26of having a role in his career. You know he'd had howling.
- 12:31Really. You know Ron.
- 12:33Also, I believe I. Don't remember that didn't come
- 12:37up in my research. I think he did.
- 12:39It came up on my research that he did the howling OK.
- 12:43Which we did also. Cover And so he had a little bit
- 12:46of experience with some of that dark comedy there, but he hadn't
- 12:49been doing a ton of stuff since then.
- 12:51He was working on The Twilight Zone, the movie, and then Steven
- 12:54Spielberg wanted him because he knew he could handle the horror
- 12:57comedy aspects of it. However, that took a few
- 13:02rewrites and reshoots because the first draft of the script
- 13:05was a lot darker. It included Billy's mom being
- 13:09decapitated and Barney being eaten.
- 13:14No. Not Barney as well as the
- 13:16Gremlins attacking a McDonald's and eating customers instead of
- 13:20burgers. I'm OK with that.
- 13:23I'm OK with that one. OK, as long as there's not
- 13:25anybody we've grown attached to. Yeah, exactly.
- 13:27I mean, the dog, you can't eat a dog.
- 13:29Yeah, and the mom, you can decapitate her.
- 13:32Sure. I don't care.
- 13:33Like, you know, I don't mind. I think it would be interesting
- 13:36to see a darker version of a Gremlins movie.
- 13:39Yeah, that's one of those that if this, I feel like if it was
- 13:42remade today like they would the.
- 13:44Broody adaptation? No, that would be like the 2000s
- 13:47take. Which I'm really shocked they
- 13:50didn't do that actually. Man, all of that rock music that
- 13:54you like to make fun of me for liking.
- 13:55Yeah. So you know the scene where Kate
- 14:00talks about her dad falling down the chimney?
- 14:03So, you know the gremlins? It's a whole urban legend type
- 14:06thing. This was also another common
- 14:08urban legend. Was somebody breaking their neck
- 14:10coming down a chimney to play Santa.
- 14:13Joe Dante was really the only one who liked that.
- 14:16The studio wanted it to be pulled because they thought it
- 14:18was dark and not really fitting in the tone.
- 14:20Steven Spielberg didn't really like it either, but he said he
- 14:23really saw this as Joe Dante's project, and from Dante's
- 14:26perspective, it kind of encapsulates the spirit of the
- 14:29movie. OK, that being that Christmas
- 14:35kind of sucks sometimes. Is that the things going wrong?
- 14:38Sometimes the urban legends are actually being true.
- 14:41Oh, OK. Yeah, I can see that.
- 14:43Finally, the puppets caused some issues.
- 14:48So gremlins might be the cause of chaos in the movie.
- 14:53They're also the cause of chaos on set, apparently.
- 14:57Especially the Gizmo puppet, because it was so small and
- 15:01adorable, it was really hard to maneuver and make it do the
- 15:05things that it wanted to do, and it caused a lot of frustration
- 15:07on the set. And Chris Wallace wanted to
- 15:11actually make the Mogwai larger to make it easier for the
- 15:14puppeteers and everything. And Joe Dante was like, no, it
- 15:17has to be tiny because it's cuter.
- 15:19Yeah, for sure. Well, that scene where they're
- 15:24throwing the darts at him, that came from a list that the that
- 15:29the crew had put together called horrible things to do to Gizmo
- 15:32just 'cause they're so frustrated.
- 15:34So that was them taking their frustrations out on Gizmo.
- 15:36It's not his fault he's so tiny. I know.
- 15:39That's so horrible. I can't believe that.
- 15:42Damn. Yeah.
- 15:43So that's those are my fun facts.
- 15:46That's fun. I like those.
- 15:48Those are good, man. I guess that means that it's
- 15:52time for us to talk about our good, bad, ugly and absurd.
- 15:55OK, well, I'll kick it off. OK, so right off the bat,
- 16:01Speaking of the Grim or the the Mogwai little little gizmo, it's
- 16:07just so adorable. Oh my God, he really is.
- 16:09These are the most charming horror figures I think I could
- 16:14ever think of. Like, it's so crazy to think
- 16:16that this is a horror movie and having something so cute like
- 16:18that in there. I'm going to say because we
- 16:21joked around about Zoe being a gremlin last week.
- 16:24Yeah, I feel like this movie also primed us a little bit.
- 16:28So pig behind the curtain. If you haven't seen this on our
- 16:31Instagram yet, we got talked into taking in another kitten.
- 16:36Yes, we have a little baby here now.
- 16:38She is like half the size of Zoe, all of the spunk, all of
- 16:43the same fur markings. And I think us being Prime,
- 16:47seeing Gizmo and being like, oh, but he's so tiny and adorable.
- 16:51It's not his fault. He's also kind of causing chaos.
- 16:53That definitely seems to have primed us to make us ready for
- 16:57the kitchen energy in our house once again.
- 16:59She's been like anytime we've been walking into a room and I
- 17:01turn on the light, she'll go. Yeah, and you'll probably end
- 17:06up, you'll probably end up picking up some of her meows
- 17:09throughout this because she is very much at the hating closed
- 17:13doors state of Kittendom. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:17So very much like her very adorable things here.
- 17:21Her name is Cordelia, by the way.
- 17:22Yeah, Cordelia. Yeah.
- 17:24We'll figure out a spot for her on the show at some point.
- 17:27Yeah, yeah, sure. She'll have to.
- 17:29She'll have to earn it. Yeah, yeah, we'll figure out her
- 17:31thing eventually. OK, so yeah, cute, cute people.
- 17:36I I do enjoy the the comedy in this.
- 17:39Like, I like when like when we get them all having fun as
- 17:43gremlins, like terrorizing the town.
- 17:45Yeah, because like, stuff like that is fun.
- 17:47Cool. It's a security threat.
- 17:51Sorry guys. I have been derailed like 5
- 17:54times on this thing. I I cannot collect my thoughts
- 17:57right now. Unfortunately, it's so.
- 17:58Not quite cute. Mock YQ Yeah, I'm trying to also
- 18:01go take that train to further good things to say.
- 18:06OK. I am surprised at how dark it
- 18:09does get because this movie like you watch a lot of it and you
- 18:12are not expecting anything bad to.
- 18:14Happen ever. Didn't think Mr. Hanson was
- 18:16actually dead? Yeah.
- 18:17That's what I was about to say. Like we're then we get like the
- 18:21professor actually get killed. We see people get stabbed, we
- 18:24see the mom take out like 4 gremlins and very brutal fashion
- 18:31and it catches you off guard. Yeah.
- 18:34I think it makes it like really effective too.
- 18:36Like I, I feel bad for them because I know that it's not
- 18:39their fault that they turned into these monsters, but they
- 18:42were also still kind of little monsters when they were Mogwai.
- 18:45Also, you know, they, I think they were little shits no matter
- 18:48what. I mean, Gizmo called it like he
- 18:51did not like them in their mock wave form either.
- 18:53No, he didn't he. He knew something was off.
- 18:55Yeah, he, he stayed away from them.
- 18:58But like, man, yeah, this movie, like it, it's just, it's full of
- 19:01a lot of surprises. It's really charming.
- 19:03It's really cute, but it's also really gory and dark at times,
- 19:06which is fucking crazy. I like how all of the pieces of
- 19:10the story end up tying up with each other because we don't just
- 19:14introduce people for the sake of introducing them.
- 19:16Like we get to see Misses Deagle get her comeuppance.
- 19:20Like I'm she she was mean, she threatened to kill Barney and
- 19:25seeing her get thrown out the window, I.
- 19:27I'm so bad, I'd forgotten all about that.
- 19:29That was an amazing death. Just having her just launch from
- 19:32her like, wheelchair, her chair thing.
- 19:34Yeah, her, her chair lift. Yeah, through like the window
- 19:37upstairs is amazing. That's really clever.
- 19:40And I like the idea that it's like these gremlins are just a
- 19:43little, well, I mean, we talked about chaos gremlins over the
- 19:48past few episodes, and this is really where it starts.
- 19:52Yeah, right here. This is a chaos gremlin, man.
- 19:54My favorite. I think one of my favorite
- 19:56shots, though, is when they're all still Mogwai and they've
- 19:59unwrapped the presents and they're playing the little
- 20:01arcade games together. It's so fucking adorable.
- 20:05God damn man. You're so cute.
- 20:07And like there's also just something very endearing about
- 20:09like, when is Jess Gizmo at 1st? And Philly's like putting the
- 20:12hat on him. He's like, Oh my God, I gotta
- 20:14get a picture of you. That's been us all week with
- 20:16Cordelia. Like we're like, Oh my God,
- 20:19she's laying in a bed like. Yeah, just a little things.
- 20:23Like, yeah, yeah, it's, it's very, it's very endearing.
- 20:27I'm glad that he won the fight. To keep them so tiny like that,
- 20:30like I, I'm sure it was really, really tough to do what?
- 20:33They wanted to do, but it's so worth it.
- 20:35Yeah. And it also kind of like makes
- 20:38their transformation into the Gremlin side of it a little bit
- 20:42more impactful because they're bigger.
- 20:43Yeah, Yeah. They are a little bit bigger
- 20:45there, yeah. OK, but you're bad.
- 20:48The only thing bad I could say is there are parts that just
- 20:52kind of go for a little bit too long, OK, Like I I like having
- 20:57the fun with them causing chaos throughout town, but it gets
- 21:00kind of samey there when we're doing it for about 15 to 20
- 21:02minutes straight, which is what it felt like.
- 21:04I don't know if that's the true amount of time, but like it, it
- 21:08went for a little bit and the whole ending standoff between
- 21:11Stripe and them kind of like went for a little bit too long
- 21:15for me in that that building where the finale happened there,
- 21:20That's really the only bad thing I could say.
- 21:22Like just a little bit of like pacing stuff right there.
- 21:24It just felt like it dragged a little bit at times.
- 21:28My bad is when does it stop being after midnight?
- 21:36Yeah, that's the thing. Because it's different time
- 21:38zones even, you know, like. I have so many questions about
- 21:42how that works. I remember when I, I was little
- 21:45and I heard you weren't supposed to wear white after Labor Day.
- 21:47And I remember asking, I was like, but it's always after
- 21:51Labor Day until it's Labor Day. And I learned, that's how I
- 21:56learned that like you, you're allowed to wear light white.
- 21:58I guess between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
- 22:00That's the part that's not ever said out loud.
- 22:02When is when does it become before midnight versus after
- 22:06midnight? So I guess if you really, if you
- 22:08wanted to think about it, it could just be like a between
- 22:12like certain cycles of, you know, like rotating around Earth
- 22:19or whatever. Like, you know, like a day, like
- 22:22it, it doesn't matter. Just like wherever you are, like
- 22:25at that point of night time, like it just like something
- 22:29about that is how it is. I don't know, like that's the
- 22:32only thing I could think of because like, time.
- 22:34Wow, it sounds like you wrote the script.
- 22:36Well, John, John Dante, John Dante, that's.
- 22:40The guy that I wrote. It with, yeah.
- 22:43Like wait, this isn't Gremlins by Joe Dante, this is Gremlins
- 22:48by John Dante. Like.
- 22:50This kid has been asking for a copy of Gremlins his entire like
- 22:54childhood and the parents were like, OK, we got it for you.
- 22:56John Dante Written by Travis Wilson director John Dante.
- 23:04OK, I don't even know why I was. Talking about it.
- 23:06What's your ugly? We got to we got to focus, man.
- 23:09Yeah, OK. So I I hate this shit with her
- 23:14going after the dog. Yeah.
- 23:17It's too cruel. She's like, actually Cruella
- 23:21Deville. Like where?
- 23:24Why are people so afraid of this evil lady?
- 23:26Everybody hates her, just let her be hated.
- 23:29Like, people be mean to her and everybody.
- 23:31Like she's talking about killing the dog and there are people in
- 23:33the bank. They're just nodding their head,
- 23:34like, yeah, that's appropriate. That's a reasonable reaction.
- 23:39I also I don't like the fact that the kid sold off the mogwai
- 23:46at the beginning because like that wasn't his and that grandpa
- 23:52now no longer has a pet because his kid went behind his back to
- 23:57sell his little pet. I'm going to make the hot take.
- 24:05Not really that the the villain of this movie is not the
- 24:14Gremlins, and perhaps it's not even Missus Eagle.
- 24:18I think it's capitalism. Capitalism, OK.
- 24:22Yeah, because that's the really the cause of all of these
- 24:25issues. The kids sold the Mogwai because
- 24:27his grandpa really needed money. They probably needed money
- 24:30because, you know, how else do you survive around here,
- 24:34Randall? It thinks every like money can
- 24:36fix everything. He wants to be a rich inventor.
- 24:39Misses Eagle is evil because she's rich.
- 24:42Yeah, like the villain in Gremlins is actually capitalism.
- 24:45OK, you know what? Now we're getting to the heart
- 24:47of. The And I think whenever we
- 24:49watch the sequel, we'll see that's even more true because of
- 24:52the metaphor of the shopping mall and Hulk Hogan, man.
- 24:58Yeah. Hulk Hogan, also known as the
- 25:02Man in Black if you are in our book club.
- 25:05Full disclosure, we have not seen Gremlins too.
- 25:07I have not. No, but we do own it on.
- 25:09DVD. I do own it.
- 25:10We need to actually watch it, yeah.
- 25:12I agree, we all will get to it. One final ugly, OK?
- 25:16I hate hearing Gizmo in pain, which happens a couple of times
- 25:19in this movie. It's just so upsetting.
- 25:21Howie Mandel, you hurt me. Yeah, I think My Ugly is mostly
- 25:28just going to be Misses Eagle because she's like cartoon
- 25:31character evil. Yeah, she's like over the top.
- 25:33It's really bad. And then also I guess Kate told
- 25:39storyline like Christmas and trauma, those go hand in hand.
- 25:43I get that. But like the guy at the bank and
- 25:46maybe it's just because we're watching too many like sappy
- 25:49Christmas movies right now also. But like the guy at the bank
- 25:52talking to her like she is like a commodity and he wants to
- 25:55like. That guy, yeah, yeah, that guy
- 25:58was. We don't really get a lot of
- 26:00him. He's just kind of there to be an
- 26:02asshole at the beginning. And that's it.
- 26:04He's like Cameron in correcting Christmas.
- 26:07Like he is, yeah. Or like Tony in Christmas Bell.
- 26:14Look up those movies and watch them this year, yeah.
- 26:16Do it, Yeah. OK, absurds.
- 26:20As you you shared it. For me, it's when they turn to
- 26:24gremlins. All of the things that the
- 26:27gremlins interact with shrink. Like when they're at the bar,
- 26:31the beer mugs are tiny, they're smoking tiny little cigarettes.
- 26:37When they're at the movie theater, the seats get tiny to
- 26:41where they're all sitting in them.
- 26:43Like you can see their heads above the seats when we get the
- 26:46like the shot from the back and they're like too scale of like
- 26:50the the seats in the theater there.
- 26:52So like everything around them just shrinks a little bit.
- 26:58It just I caught that whenever I was watching in the sun.
- 27:01I was like, you know what, that doesn't make any sense.
- 27:03They do not have tiny mugs for beer at a bar for anything like
- 27:08that unless they're you. We would be a fan of having like
- 27:12sets of miniatures and stuff like that.
- 27:14And when we went to Whole Foods last night, which we always get
- 27:18a shopping beer at Whole Foods, Yep it.
- 27:21Always make bad decisions. It, Yeah, it takes the sting
- 27:24away from how much you're going to pay for your groceries.
- 27:27We were served in, like, basically wine glasses instead
- 27:31of a tiny mug. I would have much preferred a
- 27:33tiny mug. Yeah.
- 27:34I would have too, yeah. What's your absurd?
- 27:37My absurd is also when they become gremlins.
- 27:40But I enjoyed the chaos sequences.
- 27:44I did not think they went on too long.
- 27:46Oh I enjoyed them, I'm just saying like it was a lot of the
- 27:48same after a certain point. But there were two specific that
- 27:52stand out to me that make me really joyful about this movie.
- 27:56And the first one is when they are caroling and they are
- 27:59singing their own theme song. Yeah, they're outside of the
- 28:02house going. And then the other is when
- 28:06they're at the bar and, you know, they're drinking and
- 28:09smoking and all that and Kate's trying to serve them.
- 28:12That's not what. They're saying I was like, what?
- 28:14Like that's. I was like, girl, you don't
- 28:17like, you're not going to get fired for not serving these
- 28:19creatures. Like, do you think they're going
- 28:21to report you to the Better Business Bureau?
- 28:22What's going on? It's straight out of an episode
- 28:24of Buffy. Like that shit would happen in
- 28:26Buffy too. Absolutely.
- 28:28Well, I mean, they do have a demon bar in Buffy.
- 28:31Yeah, but like normal bar, like if like a bunch of old time
- 28:34gremlins came in there, they would just serve them like,
- 28:36yeah, sure. I don't think you paid attention
- 28:39to the very special episode this season about how beer bad.
- 28:42Beer bad So. Yeah, OK.
- 28:46All that said, what do you rate in this movie?
- 28:499. I agree it's a solid 9.
- 28:52Yeah, I, I, I like this movie. It's really.
- 28:54So much fun. It was a good Christmas movie.
- 28:56Yeah, like it really is. All right.
- 28:58So we have a starting average of nine and I think we're ready to
- 29:01talk. We are.
- 29:04We start off with Randall Peltzer, inventor.
- 29:07It's his voice over. He's in Chinatown.
- 29:10He is trying to sell one of his inventions and he talks to this
- 29:14little kid who leads him to his grandfather's store.
- 29:16He's trying to sell the bathroom buddy.
- 29:18It's an all in one sundry device.
- 29:22It's clunky. It seems very ergonomical.
- 29:25Yeah, it's got like a shaving thing.
- 29:29Like, hey, like, you're in a pinch and you need a shave.
- 29:31Like, OK, like. Detective Donnie would.
- 29:35Dude, he would be so. Into that he would love.
- 29:38That the only thing is it's not an electric 1.
- 29:41He needs the electric shaver to go bring it.
- 29:43Yeah, but what if he doesn't have his shaver charged?
- 29:46He's in a pinch, yeah. Yeah, you're right.
- 29:48It has the bathroom buddy as a backup.
- 29:49Perfect. So he's trying to sell this.
- 29:53And then he starts hearing like this mewing sound, this little,
- 29:58like pathetic little noises. And as most people with a soul
- 30:03do, he's like, I need to see the adorable little bastard making
- 30:07this sound. An adorable little bastard it
- 30:10is. Except grandfather says that's
- 30:11not for sale. That's a Mogwai, My Mogwai.
- 30:16And he's like, all right. I mean, like, I will, I'll pay
- 30:18you $200. It's a perfect gift for my son
- 30:21for Christmas. And he's like, sorry, not for
- 30:24sale. Too much responsibility.
- 30:28This also ties into the whole getting a pet for Christmas just
- 30:32because you think it's cute. Yeah, you're signing on for a
- 30:35real responsibility. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:37You got to actually commit to it.
- 30:39And that's like, that's a crazy thing to throw onto a person not
- 30:43suspecting that. Like, OK, hey, you're
- 30:45responsible for a life now. Yeah, damn.
- 30:48Yeah. Like that's that's not.
- 30:50I don't think that's a gift that you should necessarily surprise
- 30:53somebody with. This guy was.
- 30:55Ever. He was like last minute
- 30:57shopping. He was like fuck, what do I get?
- 30:59OK. He's like been looking around
- 31:01for his son. He's like, what do I get my son?
- 31:04I don't know. How old is his son supposed to
- 31:06be, by the way? How old is?
- 31:08He is an adult. Yeah.
- 31:10He's he's working at a bank and he's drinking at a bar.
- 31:13I don't know what the drinking, what the legal drinking age was
- 31:16in 1984 in New York. Still 21.
- 31:20I mean it used to be 18, I just don't know when it changed.
- 31:26Well, yeah, either way, like he's he's a pretty big like I I
- 31:30had remembered that the son was Corey Feldman, but.
- 31:35That's I was like, he's somebody else's.
- 31:36Yeah, he's a He's barely like he's in this movie, but not as
- 31:40much as. I Ever Remember does seem like
- 31:41the type of movie where Corey Feldman would have the mob.
- 31:44Why? Yeah, that's.
- 31:46And he even tried to make it happen.
- 31:47His character did, Yeah. So Randall starts to walk away.
- 31:53The grandson follows him out, and he's like, listen, I'll sell
- 31:56this to you. Grandpa needs somebody, like,
- 31:59just right outside. Yeah.
- 32:00I'll meet you out there with it. 3 rules keep it out of light,
- 32:03sunlight will kill it. Keep it away from water, don't
- 32:06even let it drink water. This shit is alphabet.
- 32:10No water and never feed it after midnight.
- 32:14I will not clarify on that rule anymore.
- 32:17Which midnight? Yes.
- 32:19Yes, yes. Like what if we were traveling
- 32:21to the West Coast for visiting family?
- 32:23No food after midnight. No midnight.
- 32:27All right, so then we have like a Christmas Eve montage.
- 32:30Yeah. We're in Kingston Falls, USA.
- 32:33We have Dick Miller alert. Right.
- 32:35Yeah, well, Dick Miller ends the Christmas montage.
- 32:38Yeah, because he's got a wax poetic about American made
- 32:42vehicles, which, if you're going to hire a character actor to be
- 32:46this type of person in the 1980s movie, Dick Miller is the one.
- 32:49Yeah, he absolutely is. He's out there watching.
- 32:52Billy, I'm also just really excited to have Dick Miller as a
- 32:56random character in a movie and him not in him being more than
- 33:00one scene. Yeah, it's really nice.
- 33:03Yeah. Well, I mean, he was also in the
- 33:04howling, right? Yes, he was the store owner
- 33:06there. Yeah, however, been kind of cool
- 33:08to see like a connection there like he has like the magic shop
- 33:11here. Too.
- 33:11Yeah. Oh, that would have been cool.
- 33:13Yeah, so anyways, he's out there.
- 33:15He's helping Billy because Billy is having a hard time getting
- 33:18his car to start. That's why he's, you know,
- 33:21complaining about the non American made vehicles because
- 33:24apparently they got gremlins in them.
- 33:26Listen, I'm a Volkswagen owner. I'm not necessarily loyal to any
- 33:30brand, but I will say that those fuckers are efficient.
- 33:33Yeah, so it's a fucking tank. Same with Toyota.
- 33:36Yeah, Japanese. So Billy decides that he's going
- 33:40to walk to work and he's allowed to bring Barney, I guess because
- 33:44there's like even a spot for him to tie his lead up under his
- 33:46desk. I don't necessarily know if he's
- 33:48allowed to bring Barney based off of the reaction he gets
- 33:50later, he just kind of does. I it seems like one of those
- 33:53things, like it was mostly allowed to tell Missus Eagle
- 33:58maybe what he's a bitch about it.
- 34:00Yeah. So he's at the bank and he's
- 34:03there late. Because he.
- 34:04Couldn't get his car to go. Kate is also there.
- 34:08She she works multiple places. She's a hard worker.
- 34:10She is trying to get a petition signed to save a historical
- 34:14building because Missus Deagle again has the embodiment of
- 34:18capitalism, wants to tear it down.
- 34:20Yeah, yeah. Miss Deagle, she shows up, she
- 34:23gets a rude entrance because there's these kids, this family
- 34:26outside, this mom and two kids. And like, we need, like, the,
- 34:29like, lilting violin music, yeah.
- 34:33'Cause she's like laying it on thick.
- 34:34Here with a sob. Story.
- 34:36She's like, I just got a new job, so with my husband, we need
- 34:39one more week. The kids haven't eaten.
- 34:41And she's like, I don't care. And she's like, do you see the
- 34:44snowman head? A dog broke?
- 34:46It seems like maybe you shouldn't have a ceramic snowman
- 34:49outside. I mean like, how do you know it
- 34:52was the dog, you know? She's also.
- 34:55True, yeah, but she's blaming it on Barney because she just
- 34:59fucking hates dogs, apparently. Yeah, and then when Barney, you
- 35:04know, responds, she fends that she's got a weak heart.
- 35:07Yeah, well, I think she actually doesn't have a weak heart,
- 35:10because she kind of does say that later when she's all by
- 35:12herself too. But either way, she doesn't have
- 35:15a heart, Travis. She has no heart.
- 35:16You're right, Barney. I I like that.
- 35:18He just like pounces on her. He's like, you fucking talking
- 35:20shit about me bro. Like just jumps on her.
- 35:23They break it up. She threatens to have the dog
- 35:27kill it. If it happens again and she's
- 35:29saying that he needs to be fired, but he ends up not being
- 35:31fired. Yeah, because apparently the
- 35:34boss had change of heart because it's Christmas time.
- 35:36Yeah, you know. At Christmas time?
- 35:38How are you going to fire a dog at Christmas time?
- 35:41You can't. How are you ever going to fire a
- 35:43dog? Like ever.
- 35:44Yeah, exactly. You just.
- 35:45They retire and that's it, OK. So Billy goes to the bar to hang
- 35:49out with Kate and work on his drawings.
- 35:51He's actually, unlike the cheesy Christmas movies, he's actually
- 35:56artistically talented. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:59Gerald comes in, he's he's got an MBA.
- 36:02He's going to take over as the owner of the bank someday.
- 36:05If it was up to him, Billy and Barney would both be out on
- 36:08their He's like, hey Katie, baby, come on, when are you
- 36:11going to go out to dinner with me?
- 36:12He's like, you haven't seen my new place yet and she's like, I
- 36:15never saw your old place. I love it that.
- 36:17Was a good comeback. Like she had, she had no time
- 36:20for him. She's just like, you're not the
- 36:21fucking one, pal. Yeah, so.
- 36:25And then he also like makes fun of Billy for working to support
- 36:28his family. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:30It's like, when are you going to realize that it's not all about
- 36:33family? Like he really is just an evil
- 36:37Christmas movie guy. It's.
- 36:38So weird too because he just kind of disappears after this
- 36:41scene. You almost feels like they were
- 36:43setting him up to be a shit throughout the whole movie.
- 36:45But no, like he doesn't even have like a an instance of
- 36:48running into a gremlin like that would have been satisfying.
- 36:51Yeah, exactly. So Billy at home is helping mom
- 36:56with dinner. There is a big sigh.
- 36:59He's just a big sigh because she asked him to do the eggs.
- 37:03They've got all kinds of inventions around this house.
- 37:06It's very much Inspector Gadget meets Stew Pickles.
- 37:11Yeah, except this guy sucks at it.
- 37:14Yeah, like everything just does not work the way it's intended
- 37:17to. No, the way they said it is that
- 37:19it works for the first few times and then it then it just stops.
- 37:23Yeah. Like the eggs are not like it
- 37:25smashes 1 egg and then all the other eggs just kind of pour
- 37:28into the bowl. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:30So he ends up like manually breaking them, which seems
- 37:34easier from an egg, like from not having to pick out egg
- 37:39shell. Bit's perspective anyway.
- 37:41But hey, Dad's home. Yeah.
- 37:43Yeah. And he's got a present for
- 37:44Billy. Yeah.
- 37:45He has to be open right now. He's like it cannot wait until
- 37:47curse. Yeah, he's like, OK, it's a
- 37:49puppy, isn't it? And he's like, it's a mogwai.
- 37:53And Milly is like, what's a mogwai?
- 37:54He goes, I don't know, I didn't call him a gizmo.
- 37:57Cool. It's a.
- 37:58Good name for him though, it fits.
- 38:00I guess so. And the mom, it's like, OK, hey,
- 38:03let's go to a picture together. And she gets her big camera and
- 38:06takes the picture, but the big flash happens and that little
- 38:09gizmo gets all scared and hurt. Yeah.
- 38:11And then the dad's like, Oh yeah, that's right, there's
- 38:13rules. Yeah, almost forgotten.
- 38:17This guy is just so irresponsible.
- 38:19Yeah. He really is just seeing this
- 38:22PET as like a commodity. My next note is Corey Feldman
- 38:26arrives as a tree. Oh, hold on.
- 38:29We got a couple of things that happened first because we got
- 38:33Gizmo upstairs and he's singing and playing the keyboard with
- 38:35Billy. Oh yeah, it's really.
- 38:36Adorable. So adorable.
- 38:38And then he puts his Anna hat on him, and he wants to show him in
- 38:42the mirror what he looks like. But the flash gets him.
- 38:45It startles him, and he falls into the trash can and gets a
- 38:47little bright. Yeah.
- 38:48And he gets a little cut. So Billy's got to take him and
- 38:51clean them up. And they're just like, so cute
- 38:52together. I will feel they're not even at
- 38:55all amused that he can speak. Yeah, you know, isn't that
- 38:59crazy? Like he's out, he's talking
- 39:00words to you, he's communicating.
- 39:02You were just unfazed by. That that's crazy.
- 39:05It's, it is a little bit like they're not like, oh, that's
- 39:09English, Yeah. Yeah, especially with a being
- 39:12raised by like, you know, a Chinese dude.
- 39:14Yeah. Is he bilingual?
- 39:16Yeah, I mean he is. You're talking who the the shop
- 39:20owner. No, the Mugwai gizmo.
- 39:22He probably is. Actually, he probably is
- 39:24bilingual. OK, in the morning Billy gets
- 39:28juiced by his dad's juicer and then this is when the Christmas
- 39:32tree is delivered by a tiny Christmas tree, AKA Corey
- 39:36Feldman. We had a shot of him before at
- 39:39the like the tree yard or whatever, like where he was a
- 39:42Christmas tree already. We just didn't know his Corey
- 39:44Feldman. Yeah, so he comes upstairs
- 39:48because he wants to see the Mogwai Gizmo's watching TV.
- 39:53He specifically likes racing. He's.
- 39:55Like imitating the cars on there, like he's acting like
- 39:58he's driving along with it. Yeah, it's really cool.
- 40:00Yeah, and Pete, that's Corey Feldman's character.
- 40:05He wants to hold Gizmo, and as he's picking him up, Pete
- 40:08accidentally spills water. It ruins the art on the table,
- 40:13which is frustrating already, but it also gets Gizmo wet and
- 40:18Gizmo, it hurts him. That's so sad and.
- 40:21He's like getting these bubbles that are just kind of growing
- 40:24on. Him.
- 40:24They're not nearly alarmed enough by this.
- 40:28I know. Like all this whimsical magical
- 40:30shit happens. They're like, huh?
- 40:32Like wow, that's weird. He's just like.
- 40:34Whoa, Jesse's pops are just like, that was like a final.
- 40:40Destination day to. Day.
- 40:41It was so like it felt intended, like OK.
- 40:46But yeah, like, all these, like, puff balls, just basically it
- 40:49would be like if Talia's hives just like, grew until they
- 40:52popped off, Yeah. Dude, what if Talia shot off a
- 40:56bunch of tiny Talias? The world could not handle.
- 41:00It I'm starting to realize now that that episode of Futurama
- 41:04was probably inspired by gremlins, because that's what
- 41:07happens with them. There's like the tiny little
- 41:09things that grow off of them that turn into the tiny little
- 41:12aliens. Kaka, sorry, OK.
- 41:18Blurry in your mouth. Sorry, I can't.
- 41:21I'm not going to keep trying to sing because my voice sounds
- 41:23terrible. It's OK.
- 41:25But yeah, there's five new mug wives and Pete's like, well, can
- 41:28I have one now? And Gizmo's sad.
- 41:31Yeah, and he shows it to his dad and his dad's just like, huh?
- 41:36His dad's like, we're probably, we probably sell this.
- 41:40That's right, yeah. He's wouldn't sell.
- 41:41Them. Yeah, like.
- 41:43And he's like and he's like. Think about it, Peltzers.
- 41:47Maguas, you didn't invent this, Sir.
- 41:50This is real capitalism. It is.
- 41:53This is the actual spirit of capitalism, and it's evil.
- 41:56So this is also, I think, where we get the shot of them just all
- 41:59like they've unwrapped the presents under the tree and
- 42:02they're just playing with a little tiny arcade machine and
- 42:04just having a good time. Gizmos kind of keeping his
- 42:07distance from them though. Billy wakes up in the night to
- 42:12hear Britney crying, just sad and he looks around for him and
- 42:15he just hung up on the string lights outside.
- 42:18I'm just glad he didn't get strangled by them.
- 42:21I know, but it was just like, oh, Barney doesn't deserve that.
- 42:24So. And Billy doesn't think it's the
- 42:26Gremlins. He thinks it's Missus Deagle.
- 42:28But I'm going to say Missus Deagle threatened far worse than
- 42:31that. That's true.
- 42:32Yeah Yeah, you know, I I kind of hate how he like they're already
- 42:37like against like the five other little mug white there because
- 42:39like dude, like give them a chance.
- 42:42I know Gizmo is kind of like not really big on them, but you
- 42:45know, like he's already like he he keeps them in a box like away
- 42:49from gizmo like they are beneath them.
- 42:52Yeah, like no wonder they're fucking.
- 42:54Gizmo is your king. Yeah, they're, they're like
- 42:56forming A mutiny because they're being treated like.
- 42:58Shit no, because Stripe has does the Mohawk.
- 43:01Clearly he is not going to take this.
- 43:04No, no, like he, like, honestly, we're seeing the origin story of
- 43:10him being a super villain here because he's being treated so
- 43:12differently. Yeah.
- 43:14But Randall says it's OK We'll leave Barney with your grandma
- 43:17while I'm at convention, and I'll bring him back home in time
- 43:20for Christmas. This just feels very contrived.
- 43:24Yeah. Honestly, Yeah.
- 43:25Yeah. But I do like that we have this
- 43:28instead of being eaten, so I'll take the contrivance.
- 43:34Yes. OK.
- 43:37OK. So Mom, I look forward to your
- 43:39text message telling you what the actual word is.
- 43:41So Billy is now showing the mogwai to Mr. Hanson, who is a
- 43:45school teacher, I guess the science teacher probably.
- 43:48Is it, do you think it was intentional that they're doing
- 43:51this movie with puppets and they named the teacher Mr. Hanson?
- 43:53Oh my God, I didn't even think of that, but that's actually a
- 43:55good point. Like you may have, you may be on
- 43:57something. I cracked the code, people.
- 44:00So he demonstrates by pouring more water.
- 44:02What a fucking asshole dude. Why would you like watch this
- 44:05shit? And just like, yeah, it hurts
- 44:08him so bad bro, but watch this, he's going to pop off.
- 44:11Yeah, like literally though. Yeah, he's actually going to pop
- 44:14up. So he's keeping the bonus gizmo
- 44:17to do some testing on, and again, this is going to seem
- 44:20really cruel because he's just for the love of science and not
- 44:24considering that it's a living creature.
- 44:26Yeah, and he takes his blood and so too, like, it's just like.
- 44:30Man it's so sad. I want to shout out our vet we
- 44:34went to. We've got a new vet recently and
- 44:36whenever they have to take blood they give the pets treats to
- 44:40distract them while they're doing it.
- 44:41So like whenever we go in to get Talia's levels checked, which is
- 44:44unfortunately a lot right now because of the medication she's
- 44:47on, she just gets to lick up either whipped cream or peanut
- 44:51butter the whole time. Yeah, she's off the medication,
- 44:53by the way. She's not getting her routine
- 44:55checkups anymore. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:56But I mean it was for a while was happening.
- 44:58So it's, it's been really nice to see them like they have this
- 45:03whole culture of against fear. There, I like that too.
- 45:08We do have to cut to Dick Miller once again, Mr. Futterman.
- 45:10He's lamenting about the gremlins that took down the
- 45:13planes in World War 2. He's drunk at the bar.
- 45:17Yeah, Kate has to cut him off. Yeah she's like convincing him
- 45:20to walk home since he's super drunk cuz he wants to drive his.
- 45:24A bulldozer. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:28That's just what he gets around and like he is like shit talking
- 45:31the the vehicle that Billy has been.
- 45:34He's like, yeah, I got a bulldozer.
- 45:37Yeah, I mean, it's not American if it's not super inefficient
- 45:40with using gas. That's a great point, you're
- 45:44right. She convinces him to walk home.
- 45:47That's still dangerous with how drunk he is and the fact that
- 45:50it's snowing, but at least he's not behind the wheel.
- 45:53They just let him go. Yeah, and she and Billy walk and
- 45:56they talk about seasonal depression.
- 45:59She hates Christmas. She says lots of people hate
- 46:01Christmas. Lots of people kill themselves
- 46:03around Christmas time. Sorry for anybody that this
- 46:06triggers. I should have.
- 46:07She's just like super good morning.
- 46:09She's super pretty depressed about everything right now.
- 46:13Billy's kind of confused. He's like, I thought everybody
- 46:15was happy on Christmas. Yeah.
- 46:16And then he goes, well, do you want to, do you want to go on a
- 46:19date? And she's like, yeah, I'm free
- 46:21on Tuesday. Like that kind of turned me on.
- 46:25Yeah. So like I don't I don't
- 46:26understand but. Yeah.
- 46:29So yeah, they're gonna have a date, Yeah.
- 46:31Mr. Hansen's doing his blood test.
- 46:34We see that the Mogwai does not like the needle.
- 46:36You can't blame him. No, no.
- 46:39And the other Mogwai's are up in the room and they're hungry.
- 46:43Yeah. They're begging Billy for.
- 46:44Food. They're begging for food.
- 46:46Billy looks at his clog. It's not midnight, so he goes
- 46:49ahead and feeds them. Gizmo is like, I'm good, I got
- 46:52my book, I'm fine. Yeah, yeah, good old Gizmo.
- 46:55So they're eating chicken. And then Mr. Hanson leaves a
- 46:59sandwich within reaching distance of the mogwai in the
- 47:02cage, and we see the clock in the classroom.
- 47:05It's almost 2:00 AM, so we know definitively it's past 12.
- 47:09Billy and Gizmo fall asleep watching Invasion of the Body
- 47:14Snatchers. Is that what it was?
- 47:15Oh. Which makes sense because we're
- 47:17going to see them in the cocoons.
- 47:18I like that little tie and that was nice.
- 47:20I didn't. I didn't recognize.
- 47:22That, Yeah, I think it was the, like the original.
- 47:24Yeah. So when they wake up, the Mob
- 47:27Wives are all molted, and Billy realizes that his clock still
- 47:32shows it as being before 12. And he's like, oh shit, the
- 47:35clock is busted because it's one of his dad's clocks.
- 47:39No, they shoot a. Wire they shoot a wire they did
- 47:42OK they. Sabotaged them.
- 47:44I was kidding. I didn't write that down.
- 47:45I just made an assumption that's bad on my part.
- 47:48Mr. Hanson sees the same. He sees that it's molten.
- 47:52He calls it the pupil stage. Pete's there for some reason.
- 47:55I think they really wanted Corey Feldman to be the little buddy
- 47:59through more of this movie than he ended up being.
- 48:01Yeah, seems. Like it misses, Deagle drops by
- 48:04the bank just to reaffirm to everybody that she's the worst
- 48:09and the mog wise are hatching. Yeah, back at Billy's house.
- 48:15Yeah, up in his room. We see them hatching and we get
- 48:19a call from Mr. Hanson to Billy and he's saying you need to come
- 48:23to school right away. And he is attacked while he's
- 48:28trying to lure it out while he's waiting for Billy.
- 48:31Yeah, because like it, it kind of like scrambling around the
- 48:33classroom and ends up hiding under the desk and he gets
- 48:35attacked and pulled under the desk.
- 48:36Yeah, it's like the first little instance of horror in this
- 48:38movie, which, you know, like, it kind of catches you off guard
- 48:41because everything else has been so whimsical, you know?
- 48:44Yeah, and so when Billy gets there, he finds him under the
- 48:46desk. He's got a syringe in his butt.
- 48:48Yeah, what was he shot with? I don't know, but I like that
- 48:52the Mogwai's like giving him a. Taste of his own message, yeah.
- 48:55Yeah, like don't fucking stick them, bro.
- 48:56Some mafia shit. It is, yeah.
- 48:59Leaving a message right there, Yeah.
- 49:01So he's looking around for the Mogwai and it starts to try and
- 49:04attack him. Yeah, well, he isn't logging
- 49:07around for the Mogwai. He's trying to call him the
- 49:09phone 911 to report Mr. Hanson, and his hand is scratched by
- 49:14this gremlin, and the gremlin escapes through the vent.
- 49:20And so it's kind of like a little Scooby-doo chase scene,
- 49:23and they both wind up in the nurse's office.
- 49:25Yeah, cuz he's trying to patch up his hand cuz it got cut.
- 49:28And they have a standoff and then it disappears again and we
- 49:31see all the gremlins back at the house are being mean to Gizmo
- 49:34man. What we know is true wish
- 49:37fulfillment, which is also sad. Yeah, this is where there's,
- 49:41it's the darts, right? Yeah.
- 49:42And then he like, somehow like, stumbles into the laundry chute
- 49:46and manages to fall down there and hide from them.
- 49:49Which is good. It worked out a lot better for
- 49:51him than it did for Jamie Lloyd. Yeah.
- 49:53Yeah, it did. So the mom goes to investigate
- 49:57all of these sounds and Billy tries to call and warn her but
- 50:01then the line gets cut out so she doesn't have the full
- 50:04picture. And this is where Gremlin comes
- 50:06down in the kitchen and is being chaotic, puts its head in the
- 50:11juicer and mom starts the juicers that way it's head.
- 50:14Gets juicy. Oh my God, it's so fucking gory.
- 50:18Another one pops in and starts throwing plates at her, so she
- 50:21microwaves it. Yeah, and then explodes.
- 50:24Then she sees a stocking moving over the fireplace and she is
- 50:29getting ready to attack her, but it's just a toy.
- 50:31But inside the tree is a gremlin that jumps out and attacks her.
- 50:35Billy gets home. Yeah, and they conveniently,
- 50:39they have two swords right next to the door in case anything
- 50:41like this ever happens. Randall Peltzer absolutely
- 50:44strikes me as a sword man. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:48Whoa, hey, it paid off big time here because he, Billy grabs the
- 50:52sword and he swings it at the little gremlin.
- 50:54Does not cut it. I don't.
- 50:56Think, but it knocks it into the fireplace.
- 50:58Yeah, so it just burns to death. And then stripe the leader.
- 51:01He is the only one left, but he escapes through the window
- 51:03because he's got to be a little ass woman.
- 51:05We're gonna break a window that's also expensive.
- 51:07Mom was a fucking badass in the. Scene was.
- 51:09Like you don't expect her to just go off on these things, but
- 51:12he like she just like kills. We went from her being
- 51:15decapitated and body thrown down the stairs to like having a kill
- 51:20count of three. It's insane.
- 51:21It's. Impressive, yeah.
- 51:22For real, considering what she's working against.
- 51:25Yeah, Billy takes mom to a doctor's house to check on her,
- 51:30like cuts and whatnot, and also keep her safe.
- 51:32And he goes back to check on Gizmo and look for Stripe.
- 51:38As he's like, going around town. We see the door of the YMCA.
- 51:43It's broken. So Stripe sneaks in and he jumps
- 51:49into the swimming pool. He's.
- 51:53Doing and Billy follows him and sees what's happening just in
- 51:57time. Can't solve anything, so Billy
- 52:00goes to the police station to explain what's happening.
- 52:03Do we think this went well? No Anybody.
- 52:05Anybody want to adventure? A guess.
- 52:07Well, it does not help at all that they are drunk.
- 52:12They're they're like drinking on the job and they're not even
- 52:14trying to hide it's. Christmas Eve.
- 52:17Yeah, crime never happens around Christmas Eve.
- 52:19Never. Statistically, never.
- 52:22It is not a terrible time for crime on Christmas Eve.
- 52:24Are you being for real? OK, I was gonna say like, I feel
- 52:28like that's a pretty big time right there.
- 52:30Listen, I know my voice isn't conveying all of the tones.
- 52:33It really does. But yeah OK, the gremlins start
- 52:36messing with the Fudermans. They are playing like nothing
- 52:41around with stuff around the house.
- 52:43His antenna, because he's trying to watch TV and the antenna, the
- 52:47reception goes out. So he's like, fuck it, I'm going
- 52:49to go check the antenna on the roof.
- 52:51Yeah, so he goes out there and. They have his blow.
- 52:55Yeah, they just drive his fucking thing out of the garage
- 52:59towards him. He runs back inside and they
- 53:02drive it through the house and into both him and his wife.
- 53:04This is the scene that was in Christine the book and cut out
- 53:09from the movie. I wanted to see Christine ruin
- 53:13the The Body Shop owner's house. Yeah, we.
- 53:17Didn't. Get that?
- 53:18I know. Yeah, you're.
- 53:19Right. We didn't get that and I'm
- 53:20disappointed. John Carpenter If Joe Dante can
- 53:23and run a vehicle into a house, I know damn well you can.
- 53:27Yeah, well, he had the backing of Steven Spielberg.
- 53:30But it's John Carpenter. See, Travis, This is why John
- 53:32Carpenter is going to fight you. It's Steven Spielberg versus
- 53:35Stephen King who wins. I would also watch that fight.
- 53:41That's the that's the opening card before me and John
- 53:44Carpenter. And then like one of them runs
- 53:49out at the end to like. Yeah.
- 53:51Break up the fight. Yeah, that's that's the only way
- 53:54I have a chance of beating up John Carpenter.
- 53:58OK, so they're dead. Yeah, the cops, meanwhile, are
- 54:02being amused by Gizmo because he is, you know, adorable and
- 54:06amusing. Yeah, like he they have proof
- 54:08now that there are little tiny creatures.
- 54:10They're still being oblivious to the.
- 54:12Well, yeah. Because if you saw this little
- 54:14sucker, you wouldn't think that he's going to ruin the town.
- 54:17Yeah, but he's telling him like, but if you do this midnight, the
- 54:22cops probably also ask when I'm like, OK, so like when midnight
- 54:26what? Midnight Which?
- 54:27Midnight. And he doesn't have a good
- 54:29answer for that, because nobody does.
- 54:30You know what he needs? They needed the clock from Santa
- 54:33Sleigh that has the time in all areas right there.
- 54:37But then are we going to pull some Goldberg shit and say like,
- 54:41well, the North Pole, it's whatever time zone we choose?
- 54:44You know that's exactly what would have happened.
- 54:46They get a call about the Frederman wreckage, and they
- 54:50still don't believe that it's gremlins.
- 54:51Billy, Should I say it's definitely gremlins?
- 54:53They're like, no, it's just an accident and Frederman was
- 54:55probably drunk and left his plow running.
- 54:57I mean, it's probably a good assumption on a normal.
- 55:00Day. They're probably drinking
- 55:01buddies with him. Yeah, so we see the Gremlins are
- 55:05messing around with things like the mail and stoplights and Mrs.
- 55:11Deagall. Yeah.
- 55:13That's that's to their Christmas caroling to have Mrs. House.
- 55:17Yeah, she is, immediately and amused.
- 55:19She's like, who the fuck is Christmas caroling on Christmas
- 55:21Eve? What the fuck?
- 55:22Yeah, And then she closes the door on them and she's like, OK,
- 55:25I'm dying. I can't do this, not now.
- 55:27This is not my time. And so she gets back into her
- 55:30little chairs. That way she can go up to her
- 55:32bed and it's been rigged for super speed and she ends up
- 55:36flying through the window. That's such a fun death.
- 55:39Yeah, and it happens right in front of the cops.
- 55:41Like her body lands right in front of them as they're driving
- 55:46around and they're just in display.
- 55:48They're like what the fuck just happened in this deal she's just
- 55:50watched through the window right in front of.
- 55:52Us and then further down the street they see somebody dressed
- 55:55in Santa being attacked by the gremlins.
- 55:58And there's just like all kinds of general.
- 56:00Chaos. I don't like how it like.
- 56:02Their reaction is like, we gotta get out of here.
- 56:04No, no, the like the guy comes over there and they had the
- 56:07window down and they just roll it out.
- 56:09Like they don't even want to help them.
- 56:11Like I want to go home. They don't want to.
- 56:14Grizz Eve was supposed to be a quiet night of drinking at the
- 56:17station. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:19So we now have. They they crashed, their car
- 56:23gets damaged by the gremlins and so they end up crashing.
- 56:26Well, yeah, but also like, before then they're on the radio
- 56:29rock. And Ricky, who is like this
- 56:31radio personality that we've heard the entire time, is also
- 56:33being attacked by the Gremlins too.
- 56:36So yeah, they're at the Dory's bar now, which is where Kate
- 56:40works, and they have taken over the bar and they're having the
- 56:44time of their lives there. Yeah, I think there's a couple
- 56:49of important things to to mention as well.
- 56:53We've got Billy's car is actually starting right now and
- 56:57he hears Pete calling into Rock and Ricky.
- 57:00That's where that. Happened.
- 57:01That's where that happens. And then he hears the radio
- 57:04station being broken into. Meanwhile, Dad, after his
- 57:07convention, is trying to sell his smokeless ashtray to a
- 57:11smoker at a gas station. Yeah.
- 57:15It's it ends up not being super, super important, but it's kind
- 57:18of a thing at the end. The dad just kind of like shows
- 57:21up. What about this movie?
- 57:24Like at the beginning and then at the.
- 57:25End. I feel like they had Hoyt
- 57:27accident for two days of filming.
- 57:29So yeah, it seems like. It Kate is serving the gremlins
- 57:33at the bar, she's trying to light the cigarettes for that
- 57:36like she's I don't know why she got it.
- 57:39And maybe it's one of those things that like you just get so
- 57:41panicked and caught up in the moment that you don't realize
- 57:43why you're doing what you're doing.
- 57:45But she goes to light their cigarettes for them and realizes
- 57:47they're afraid of the fire. And that's how she realizes how
- 57:51she can get them to kind of give her space to get out.
- 57:54And so she starts just triggering with camera flashes.
- 57:58And then Billy pulls up and he's got the headlights flashing into
- 58:01Dory's bar. And so that gives them enough
- 58:04time for her to get out. But then the car stops again, so
- 58:09they have to run for it. Yeah, so this is where Kate
- 58:13gives her Christmas sob story about what happened to her dad.
- 58:18It's Christmas Eve and she and her mom were decorating the tree
- 58:22and waiting for her dad to come home, but he never came home.
- 58:25There's no answer at the office and they go 5 days with no sign
- 58:28for him and they're desperate and sad and hungry and cold.
- 58:33So they start a fire and they smell something awful and they
- 58:37call somebody and they find in the fireblaze your dad dressed
- 58:42in a Santa suit. He broke his neck trying to drop
- 58:45down the chimney. Fucking dramatic right there.
- 58:48It's so dark. Also it's dramatic and dark but
- 58:55who the fuck thinks they can climb down a chimney?
- 58:58I mean there. Especially because most chimneys
- 59:01have a cap on them so that way you don't get things like bats
- 59:04and corals inside of it. Yeah, I mean, there, there are
- 59:07plenty of incidents in like real life where this is just a thing
- 59:11because people think that like it's people have seen it in
- 59:14movies and TV shows. So therefore it must be.
- 59:16I think you can. Really, I love the logic of
- 59:18that. Like Santa's not real, but
- 59:22surely dropping down a chimney is fine?
- 59:24I think it depends. On the.
- 59:25Chimney. Are they same people trying to
- 59:26jump off of the roof of their house because it's the same
- 59:29drop? Yeah.
- 59:31Well, you can like kind of like wall climb your way down there
- 59:35if it's a big enough chimney. If it's not, then you might be
- 59:39able to like he. Clearly fell long enough to hit
- 59:42his head at an angle and break his neck.
- 59:45Yeah, but he didn't hit the ground.
- 59:47I'm just saying like he wasn't wall climbing, he did something,
- 59:50he was falling. He fucked himself up either way.
- 59:52Do not go down chimneys. Yeah, that's the last moral of
- 59:55the story. Yeah, that's what they were
- 59:56trying to hammer home here with this movie.
- 59:59We have the Gremlins at the movie theater watching Snow
- 1:00:01White. I'm shocked they got away with.
- 1:00:04That dude, I love that they're all singing along and then
- 1:00:07whenever they walk into the theater, Gizmo is also singing
- 1:00:10along to it. It's like the the dwarfs that
- 1:00:12are singing their song, it's just so adorable.
- 1:00:15I fully believe that. And I mean, if you have pets,
- 1:00:18you've seen them you like. We leave stuff on for the pets
- 1:00:21all the time, and we know there are certain things that they
- 1:00:23react to. I mean, shit, we have a whole
- 1:00:25segment about our pets reacting to the movies.
- 1:00:28Yeah. And I like that that carries
- 1:00:29over to the Mob Wives and Gremlins I.
- 1:00:31Like it too. So they moved to the back of the
- 1:00:37movie theater. There they go, actually to the
- 1:00:38boiler room. Yeah, well, they're, they're
- 1:00:40behind the screen first. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:42And they start a gas leak, and what they're going to do is
- 1:00:47leave a fire burning nearby so that way they can cause a fire
- 1:00:53blow up the gremlins. They are chased to the exit.
- 1:00:57Billy blocks the door and the theater explodes.
- 1:01:00But Stripe got out before the door was blocked.
- 1:01:03So he is in the department store across the street.
- 1:01:05Yeah, while all that was going on, he saw a neon sign saying
- 1:01:07candy. So he's like, I'm going for
- 1:01:08candy. They follow him to stop him from
- 1:01:12getting to water and they get into this department store.
- 1:01:15Billy is going to go look for Stripe.
- 1:01:17Kate and Gizmo are going to go look for light.
- 1:01:20And this was driving me crazy because there were skylights in
- 1:01:24this building and I could not for the life of me remember the
- 1:01:28word skylight. I kept wanting to write sunroof
- 1:01:32that's for cars and it was extra upset because I know that your
- 1:01:35parents house has multiple skylights.
- 1:01:37You've struggled with this the entire time I've known you like
- 1:01:39every time you like talk about that, that our house like it's
- 1:01:43like what does that fuck mean? Window your roof?
- 1:01:47What's? This window on the roof.
- 1:01:49Explain it. What is that?
- 1:01:53It's like in Blood, Blood Rage when you know, like he has like
- 1:01:57the gun or something. What is that?
- 1:02:00Anyway, there's a stripe is playing both offense and defense
- 1:02:06is maybe a lot smarter than Billy.
- 1:02:09Yeah, I mean, he comes down with a chainsaw.
- 1:02:11Yeah. I mean, that's a pretty good
- 1:02:14game plan right there. It worked really well in Texas
- 1:02:16Chainsaw Massacre. I like these little bits of
- 1:02:19gizmo driving around in a tiny little.
- 1:02:21Car. He's doing some Recon.
- 1:02:22He's trying to figure out like where the best way to get to
- 1:02:24lighting is, and then he gets his car and he gets to have his
- 1:02:28driving racing moment. He runs over a little Barney's
- 1:02:31paw, though. Oops.
- 1:02:35Listen, things could have been a lot worse for Barney in this
- 1:02:38movie. That's true.
- 1:02:39That's that's very true. Like, and also it's a toy car
- 1:02:44that would be like if my little remote controlled dinosaur out
- 1:02:47there ran over Talia's Paul. Like she would be annoyed and
- 1:02:50I'd be like, but you're OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:53That's fair. That's fair.
- 1:02:53It's just like I don't like to see it.
- 1:02:56Kate turns on the lights. Stripe is out the fountain, but
- 1:03:00Barney and Gizmo, they had to ward where everything's going
- 1:03:04down. Gizmo opens the blinds and
- 1:03:06Stripe melts. Yeah they they catch him cuz he
- 1:03:10launched himself into the fountain so he was bubbling up
- 1:03:12but they burn him just in time. Also the dad shows up.
- 1:03:16Yeah, he's just there, huh? Like why is he even there?
- 1:03:19Why did he stop there? He cuz he went to go pick up
- 1:03:22Barney and Barney like since. This oh went there right, right,
- 1:03:26right. OK.
- 1:03:29So they get Gizmo wrapped up so that way they can take him home
- 1:03:33later. The news is reporting mass
- 1:03:35hysteria in the town. And they're everybody's just
- 1:03:39like at the Peltzers, enjoying Christmas, watching this news,
- 1:03:43figuring out, you know, where we go from here.
- 1:03:47And it turns out where we go from here is the shop owner
- 1:03:49taking Gizmo. Back.
- 1:03:50Yeah, he's just arrives back at their house.
- 1:03:51He's like, I will let you have him all the way back when you're
- 1:03:55ready. Like you guys did.
- 1:03:57This you did the three things you weren't supposed to do.
- 1:04:00You did all three of them, like you guys do not have what it
- 1:04:05takes to be the owner of this little guy.
- 1:04:07Like none of these people, none of these people could convince
- 1:04:11Commie to bring back Shenron. No, they don't.
- 1:04:13They're not. They're not.
- 1:04:14Lose faith and humanity with this right here.
- 1:04:17Absolutely. But Gizmo does want to say
- 1:04:20goodbye to Billy. He does say he's like, Gizmo
- 1:04:24will be ready for you when you are ready.
- 1:04:26Yeah. And then Gizmo just whispers in
- 1:04:29the shop owner's here and he's like, he says goodbye.
- 1:04:34And then the dad offers him a smokeless ashtray as a gift.
- 1:04:37Yeah, but he already bought 1 because he, I guess,
- 1:04:40successfully sold it to the guy at the gas station.
- 1:04:43Here's the thing though, is that the shop owner smokes a pipe so
- 1:04:49I know ashtray. Not necessarily it's useful.
- 1:04:52Maybe he likes both. Maybe like, yeah, all forms of
- 1:04:56tobacco, he smokes them. But we also do just know that
- 1:04:59Randall Randall Peltzer is canonically not considerate with
- 1:05:03his gifts. True, that thing's also going to
- 1:05:05bust after a couple years. 100% yeah, but the shop owner
- 1:05:07recognizes that it's the thought that counts, yeah.
- 1:05:11Yeah, so he walks off in the distance and that's how the
- 1:05:15movie ends. All right, so I'm.
- 1:05:19Keeping mine at 9:00. I I agree, I think this is such
- 1:05:22a solid and fun Christmas movie. It's got a little bit of that
- 1:05:2680s like shine to it, which is to say there's like some parts
- 1:05:30that maybe could be cut down a little bit from a Jade
- 1:05:33perspective, but I have fun with it.
- 1:05:37I do too. It's a classic for a reason.
- 1:05:42OK, OK. Oh yeah, I have to read stuff,
- 1:05:46don't I? Yes, you do.
- 1:05:47But first we got to talk about Talia.
- 1:05:50Yes, we do. What did Talia think of this?
- 1:05:52I will say as soon as we first see the Mogwai, Talia goes.
- 1:05:57Yeah, I think she, I think she sees him as cats.
- 1:06:03Yes. And I will say it fully, Talia
- 1:06:07has taken ownership of Cordelia. We have a little chaos gremlin
- 1:06:11here running around right now, and Talia has been very good
- 1:06:13with her. She's been trying to protect.
- 1:06:15Her, she's been, she's honestly been kind of a helicopter parent
- 1:06:18over her. She really has, yes.
- 1:06:20So I think she would have. She would have appreciated the.
- 1:06:23Whole thing here. The Barney and his MO dynamic.
- 1:06:26Yeah, yeah. So I think she, I think she
- 1:06:28gives us a nine also. Yeah, I think she would have
- 1:06:31given it a 10 until she heard that they're initially planning
- 1:06:34to kill Bernie and that's an automatic point off.
- 1:06:37Even if you were even thinking about it, that's.
- 1:06:39A point like how dare she's Steven Spielberg.
- 1:06:41She's not scared of you. OK?
- 1:06:44Zoe's ultimate warrior. Stripe.
- 1:06:49Do we think it's Stripe? I mean.
- 1:06:52I guess there is the whole element of being so hungry that
- 1:06:55it destroys a town. Dude no, I mean he like tricked
- 1:06:58Billy successfully into feeding him by like fucking with the
- 1:07:03time. You know, like the clock.
- 1:07:05I you know what, actually, Because see, Zoe, if she ever
- 1:07:08figured out that she could change the clock, she would
- 1:07:11definitely do that. Yeah.
- 1:07:12Yeah, and it would work. I hope she didn't get ideas from
- 1:07:16this movie. She might have gotten ideas.
- 1:07:19She definitely, she got ideas. She sees herself as Stripe for
- 1:07:22sure. Who do you see yourself as?
- 1:07:24That is to say, who did you relate to?
- 1:07:26Man, who did I relate to? I I related to Billy and the
- 1:07:37fact that he's working with his dog as it is right now.
- 1:07:40I'm working with my dog at home all the time.
- 1:07:42So you know, like it's a really good dynamic.
- 1:07:46If you can work with your dog I 100% recommend it cuz it's a lot
- 1:07:50of fun. Yeah.
- 1:07:56Yes, I relate to Kate cuz for a long time I had a really hard
- 1:07:59time with Christmas. Yeah, I've come around on it
- 1:08:02mostly cuz it's your favorite holiday and I really wanted to,
- 1:08:06I wanted to not have it be such a hard time for me and I wanted
- 1:08:10to continue being a good time for you.
- 1:08:12Well, I hope it has become a good time for.
- 1:08:14You it has. It has.
- 1:08:16Yeah, we got fun cheesy Christmas movies.
- 1:08:18We can have fun horror Christmas movies.
- 1:08:21We got a lot. It's a great time.
- 1:08:22We've got treats we're gonna be making.
- 1:08:25Yeah. All kinds of good stuff is
- 1:08:27happening. OK, cool.
- 1:08:28That's fitting. OK, and then dream sequel.
- 1:08:33Boy. I wanna see you.
- 1:08:36I wanna see you, Gizmo making his way back to Billy making.
- 1:08:39His way back down. You know how that song goes.
- 1:08:44That's not how that goes. You don't know how that song
- 1:08:46goes. Making my way back down, walking
- 1:08:49around. That's how I those are the
- 1:08:54words, right? Oh, making my way back down.
- 1:08:58Making my way downtown, walking fast, face is fast and I'm
- 1:09:02homebound. I thought I had.
- 1:09:05It you didn't, you were so confidently incorrect.
- 1:09:08Well, that's Gizmo's version. That's the Gizmo version.
- 1:09:11OK, Yeah. I would like to see Gizmo, like,
- 1:09:14fun his way back to the family. There is Gizmo in the sequel.
- 1:09:20I feel like you gotta have Gizmo back, right?
- 1:09:22I don't know and I don't really want to look it up because I
- 1:09:24don't want it to be ruined for him.
- 1:09:26Yeah, yeah, that's the only thing that I know.
- 1:09:28Spoilers I'm glad to hover the spoilers from that key and Peele
- 1:09:31skin. Yeah, I was about to say the
- 1:09:31exact same thing. Yeah, like we just watched that
- 1:09:33episode and then or it ends with the same all of this stuff
- 1:09:36actually happens. In the movie.
- 1:09:38Which is a good selling point for the movie right now.
- 1:09:41Honestly, yeah. OK, so yeah, he finds his way
- 1:09:45back to the family there. What happens?
- 1:09:51I don't know, I'm picturing like a homeward bound situation which
- 1:09:53makes me sad but oh dude. Gizmo on It's just a movie of
- 1:09:57Gizmo on his way back to the house and like, it's just his
- 1:10:01adventure. Like, you know, he like hitches
- 1:10:03a ride off of something. He befriends another dog that
- 1:10:07helps him get there. Yeah.
- 1:10:08Yeah, you know, and stuff like. That do we have an actual
- 1:10:11crossover with Homeward Bound? Yes.
- 1:10:14OK, good. And.
- 1:10:15This time, Dick Miller does have a magic shop.
- 1:10:18No, I was gonna say this time Dick Miller is one of the
- 1:10:20animals he interacts with. Dick Miller is a Mogwai.
- 1:10:24Except instead of doing like a voice over, he's like, dressed.
- 1:10:28He's Shawn Gun. He's yeah, no, I wanted him like
- 1:10:31in like an actual suit, like a giant size Mogwai and all of
- 1:10:34them are so tiny and but it's still his face.
- 1:10:38Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, OK.
- 1:10:41What would Dom do? Oh my God, what would Don do?
- 1:10:45Well, I think he would see this as like he would not have a name
- 1:10:48for it until a few years after Christmas because, you know, he
- 1:10:54doesn't name his children. No, he names his children the
- 1:10:57mother of his children. Don't name his children that's.
- 1:11:00True. That's true, yeah.
- 1:11:01He would name him Brian. It would just be named Brian.
- 1:11:06And then like, it's just a contest between that Brian and
- 1:11:10Brian Junior and Brian O'Connor, like which Brian's the best
- 1:11:16Brian, I mean, yeah, a street race for Dom's love.
- 1:11:19In like little. And obviously, Gizmo Brian.
- 1:11:23Gizmo, Gizmo Brian. Yeah, he's learned the racing.
- 1:11:28He's got the little tiny card. That's what I'm going to say.
- 1:11:30Yeah, dude, I want it. I want the finale to be at Race
- 1:11:34Force. Yes.
- 1:11:37Yeah, like Gizmo has to go up against Johnny Tran.
- 1:11:42Counterpoint, I want the finale to be at the parking garage in
- 1:11:46Tokyo and we just cut. We end with Gizmo Brian doing a
- 1:11:50Tokyo Drift. He is the new DK.
- 1:11:54Yeah, that's how it goes. This is also in the sequel, by
- 1:11:59the way. Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:02OK. Yeah, yeah, Tagline, tagline,
- 1:12:07tagline. We have to really come up with
- 1:12:09this on the top of our head because they're not editing, so
- 1:12:11we can't have as much dead air as we normally do.
- 1:12:13OK, well let's see man, I don't fucking know.
- 1:12:29Wipe right? Sometimes in life you got to say
- 1:12:37mug. Why not?
- 1:12:45Oh my God, I I have no option but to say yes to that because I
- 1:12:49can't think of anything better. I'm on cough syrup.
- 1:12:54Thank you. J Quill?
- 1:12:56Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:57Thank you. J Quill.
- 1:13:01J Quill. J Quill.
- 1:13:04What's happening to you today? I don't know.
- 1:13:07I'm on a lot of medication and that explains me.
- 1:13:10I got a contact tie. That's not that's how it works,
- 1:13:14right? OK, I've got a review.
- 1:13:19OK, I know we're both fans of this movie.
- 1:13:21So I found a bad review and this is a one out of 10, which a lot
- 1:13:26of times I do try and stray away from these because most of the
- 1:13:28time they're just like, this is stupid.
- 1:13:30This one kind of made me laugh. I saw this when I was little and
- 1:13:34it made me angry then because you can't feed them after
- 1:13:37midnight. It's always after midnight.
- 1:13:38So you're gonna never feed them. Now I'm watching it years later.
- 1:13:41And if they get wet, they multiply.
- 1:13:43These things are running in snow.
- 1:13:44That was the thing before. Drinking beer.
- 1:13:47Then I got to thinking. Their own saliva.
- 1:13:49Tear ducts. Tear ducts, not ducks.
- 1:13:51Oh my God, they were drinking beer.
- 1:13:53What? Tear ducts.
- 1:13:56Tear ducts. So like sad ducks, just.
- 1:14:08Like blood etcetera would all get them wet.
- 1:14:10Wet. Was everyone on when they made
- 1:14:12this? Every character's an idiot.
- 1:14:14The big socket hanging in front of the fireplace.
- 1:14:16Fire hazard as a toy robot in the stocking.
- 1:14:18I assume it's for their adult son.
- 1:14:21There's a laundry list of issues with it, but this would take so
- 1:14:24much time. I'm going to stop now.
- 1:14:25Oh boy. These are all very fair points.
- 1:14:27These are our I had never even thought.
- 1:14:29About SO, which I have to say, This is a movie.
- 1:14:31You have to turn your brain off. Yeah, you really do.
- 1:14:34It's mandatory. You just gotta go.
- 1:14:36Oh, look at the cute little guy. Yeah, and they're just like, I
- 1:14:40mean, they introduce logic, but then they just don't even follow
- 1:14:44any logic afterwards. This.
- 1:14:46Yeah, you know, like, whatever. Yeah, it's a silly movie.
- 1:14:50So it's just, it is what it is. If that's the worst you can say
- 1:14:55about this movie, then I think it's a good movie.
- 1:14:58Yeah, cuz. It's it's a silly little movie,
- 1:15:00that's really all it's meant to be, and I'm OK with that.
- 1:15:03Yeah, I I am totally fine with it too.
- 1:15:05Well, we'll see what other people say.
- 1:15:08Yay, listeners say this. We have one review.
- 1:15:11It's from Mord Zombie. Who says such a classic.
- 1:15:13Also a hot take. More of a Christmas movie than
- 1:15:15Die Hard. Great creators.
- 1:15:19Wait, that that hit a chord with you I guess.
- 1:15:22We had this fight at work. The Die Hard fight.
- 1:15:24It's necessary for it to be the office Christmas party because
- 1:15:28that's why everybody's gathered there and that's why the
- 1:15:30terrorists knew that they could come and make their move.
- 1:15:32Yeah, I saw a recent thing like Macaulay Culkin was saying the
- 1:15:36Die Hard's not a Christmas movie because the movie would work if
- 1:15:39it weren't on Christmas Day. News flash.
- 1:15:41Macaulay Culkin. Those movies?
- 1:15:44Yeah, you could also be left at home during vacation.
- 1:15:47It could be summer vacation, you know?
- 1:15:50Yeah. Like that's how most Christmas
- 1:15:53movies are. It's they're basically just
- 1:15:55romance movies or magic movies. Yeah, that's basically it.
- 1:15:58Or a lot of. Times both.
- 1:16:00Yeah. OK.
- 1:16:02To continue the review, OK, great critters, great effects,
- 1:16:05no notes, 11 outs and a must watch at least once a year.
- 1:16:09OK. I absolutely agree with that.
- 1:16:11I agree with everything you said except for Die Hard.
- 1:16:14I mean, no, I he's still saying that Die Hard is a Christmas
- 1:16:17movie, just more of 1. I do agree that it's probably
- 1:16:20more of a Christmas movie because the Christmas imagery is
- 1:16:22more like a thing here and like the whole thing is like a
- 1:16:26Christmas present type thing. I don't know, I I feel like it
- 1:16:29makes sense. I had a look at one thing real.
- 1:16:32Quick if if people even argue that Kremlin Kremlin's gremlins
- 1:16:36are like it's not a Christmas movie.
- 1:16:39I don't understand that argument one bit.
- 1:16:42I was going to see when Die Hard was released since this wasn't
- 1:16:45released on Christmas but Die Hard was released in July so it
- 1:16:49was OK. Yeah, I mean, like, what are you
- 1:16:51going to say? Halloween's on a Halloween movie
- 1:16:53because it was released in August.
- 1:16:55I mean, we have had upsets about that before.
- 1:16:59Yeah, but it's still a Halloween movie because it's set on
- 1:17:01Halloween. That's just how it goes.
- 1:17:04People don't make the rules. OK, that's it for reviews.
- 1:17:08Right there. All right, and funny enough, we
- 1:17:11actually already know what next week's episode's gonna be
- 1:17:14because it's gonna be on New Year's Day.
- 1:17:16And as of the 16th of this month, New Fears Eve is
- 1:17:20streaming on screen box. So we're finally gonna talk
- 1:17:24about New Fears Eve. That was done by our friends
- 1:17:27over at Blood Men Pictures. I'm in a scene of it.
- 1:17:33Yeah, yeah. So what movie that was made here
- 1:17:35in Kentucky? Yeah, made in Owensboro.
- 1:17:37We watched it a while back at the premiere where we saw.
- 1:17:41Yeah, there was a premiere in Owensboro.
- 1:17:43It was a good time. We're really excited to talk
- 1:17:45about it. We got one of the shirts and
- 1:17:47name badges from the set hanging on our wall in here, so that's
- 1:17:51what we're gonna talk about next week.
- 1:17:52Yeah, I'm, I'm really looking forward to it.
- 1:17:54It's gonna be a good time. Yeah.
- 1:17:56And that's it's on screen box. Yeah, screen box is where it's
- 1:17:58streaming. Yeah, and I don't you can you
- 1:18:01rent it? No, I think it's an exclusive.
- 1:18:03It's an exclusive right now. I think it's an exclusive
- 1:18:05because of the way they have it done.
- 1:18:06So we're gonna have to get a screen box.
- 1:18:09I'm typing a screen box instead of.
- 1:18:11Yeah yeah. Yeah, but it that's where you
- 1:18:14watch it, then Jesse's looking up if you can rent it right now.
- 1:18:19It seems that you can rent it from Google TV or fancy and go
- 1:18:22at home. Oh cool, so you know, if you
- 1:18:24don't want to subscribe then I guess.
- 1:18:26There's an option, yeah, if the Internet is being truthful.
- 1:18:29Sometimes it's not, especially here lately where Google's like
- 1:18:32hey Google AI has got you bro and it will make up everything.
- 1:18:35Yeah, this is a lie. This is something somebody said
- 1:18:38on the Internet one time and I have not fat checked it, but I'm
- 1:18:40going to present it to you as truth.
- 1:18:42Yeah, it's, it's fucking, it sucks now.
- 1:18:45So whatever, that's the movie, you know where you can watch it.
- 1:18:48So that's what's happening. In the meantime, we're going to
- 1:18:53thank our bubbies over on the Patreon.
