- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I am going to
- 0:02be your host Tracie and thank you guys so much
- 0:04for tuning in and we are in the month of June,
- 0:07wisdom and proverbs. And so in this episode,
- 0:09we're going to be talking about guarding our
- 0:11mouth and mind. And a proverb teaches us anything
- 0:14it's about this. A wise life requires a guarded
- 0:17mouth and a disciplined mind. And so you could
- 0:20not have a peaceful life with an unguarded mind
- 0:22and you could not have a healthy life with an
- 0:25unrestrained mouth. You cannot have a wise life
- 0:28with impulsive thoughts and restrictive speech.
- 0:32The book of Proverbs talks about your mouth more
- 0:34than almost anything else and your mind more
- 0:37than you realize. Because your words and your
- 0:39thoughts determine your direction, your relationships,
- 0:44your spiritual growth, your emotional stability,
- 0:48your identity, your reputation, your peace. your
- 0:52ability to hear God. And in this episode, I want
- 0:55to show you how to guard your mouth and your
- 0:58mind in the world that normalizes verbal chaos
- 1:02and mental exhaustion. And so the mouth is a
- 1:05window to the heart. And so Jesus says out of
- 1:09the outflow of the heart, the mouth speaks in
- 1:12Luke 6 45. And so the mouth reveals what's on
- 1:16your heart. Have you ever heard of like the Freudian
- 1:18slip? And so it shows bitterness, it shows insecurity,
- 1:21it shows pride and fear and anger, self -righteousness,
- 1:24compassion, humility, faith, hope. Whatever dominates
- 1:28your heart leaks out of your mouth. And this
- 1:30is why Proverbs repeatedly warns, those who guard
- 1:34their lips preserve their lives in Proverbs 13
- 1:37.3, meaning your words can protect your life
- 1:41or can ruin it. And that's why your words matter
- 1:46spiritually. Your words can build or break you,
- 1:49can heal or hurt, can bless or curse, can encourage
- 1:52or discourage, can unite or divide, bring peace
- 1:56or stir conflict, speak life or speak death.
- 2:00Proverbs 18 -21 isn't poetic. It's just literal.
- 2:04Life and death are in the power of the tongue.
- 2:08What you say creates an atmosphere around you.
- 2:11Some people wonder why their lives are in tension.
- 2:14but their words create tension. Some people wonder
- 2:18why they feel hopeless. It's because they speak
- 2:20hopeless. And some people wonder why their homes
- 2:23feel chaotic, but their words are chaotic. Your
- 2:27mouth is the thermostat. It sets the climate
- 2:30of your relationships. And I think that three
- 2:33most dangerous types of speech and proverbs are
- 2:36one, reckless words. Proverbs 12, 18 says that
- 2:39reckless words pierce like a sword. These are
- 2:43words that we throw around quickly, sarcasm that
- 2:46wounds, anger that cuts, criticism that bruises,
- 2:51impulsive reactions, emotional outbursts or crash
- 2:55-outs, unnecessary commentary, venting without
- 2:59self -control. Recklessness and reckless words
- 3:04are like stab wounds, but wise words heal. And
- 3:10then two. Gossip and slander Proverbs 16 8 28
- 3:15says gossip separates close friends Gossip does
- 3:19three things it kills trust Spreads poison and
- 3:23destroys unity. You cannot have wisdom and gossip.
- 3:27They're spiritually opposite Take a minute. When
- 3:31was the last time that you gossiped? When was
- 3:32the last time that you said something that you
- 3:34heard without actually knowing the facts? When
- 3:37was it said when was this? When was the last
- 3:39time that you said something about somebody that
- 3:41was hateful? When was the last time that you
- 3:43spoke out of emotion? When was the last time
- 3:45that you said something like, oh, I shouldn't
- 3:47have said that? Or you spoke too fast. You didn't
- 3:49take that to God. And so these things are what
- 3:53kills our relationships. Three, complaining and
- 3:58negativity. Proverbs warms about grumbling spirits
- 4:01because they bind you, they blind you to blessings
- 4:04and magnify your problems. Complaining convinces
- 4:07your mind that your life is worse than it actually
- 4:10is. Negativity is a thief of gratefulness. And
- 4:14so many times in scripture, we have the people
- 4:16that were going to go into the problemless land,
- 4:18but they grumbled and complained. They went out
- 4:20of Egypt, God gave them out of Egypt. And then
- 4:22they grumbled and complained. They didn't have
- 4:23no manna. They didn't have the meat. And so God
- 4:25gave them what they asked for. And so many times
- 4:28that we grumble and we complain. And where are
- 4:30we at? We look at all the things that we don't
- 4:32have. Versus the things that we do have I think
- 4:35there's a song about it that we complain about
- 4:37what we don't have and we don't we forget to
- 4:39look at what we do have and so we The negativity
- 4:42is the thief of gratefulness. And so that's why
- 4:45it's so important We've said this time and get
- 4:46on this podcast a grateful heart will change
- 4:48your attitude and so just getting up in the morning
- 4:50and just Entering his courts with Thanksgiving
- 4:52thanking him for everything that you can be grateful
- 4:54for and it really will change your perspective
- 4:56on things and again I was him turn to my dad
- 4:59and whenever he was going through his hip surgery
- 5:01it had to be painful absolutely and he was groaning
- 5:04and complaining and pain and at that point there
- 5:06was nothing that we could do he had his medication
- 5:09we were waiting on surgery and I said you know
- 5:11what dad no I said we're not gonna grumble we're
- 5:13not gonna complain because that's just gonna
- 5:14make us think of the pain. So let's give thanks.
- 5:17And so let's say, thank you, Jesus. Thank you,
- 5:18Jesus. Let's thank you that we're in the hospital.
- 5:20Let's thank him for the pain medication. Let's
- 5:22thank him that we're going to have surgery here
- 5:24in a little bit. And so let's change this reflection
- 5:26of, yes, I fell and broke my leg. But I'm so
- 5:29thankful that I get to have surgery. I'm so thankful
- 5:30that I'll be up walking. So let's turn. that
- 5:33negativity into something that we're grateful
- 5:35for because that grumbling and that it will just
- 5:38feed and fester and you'll turn into that negative
- 5:41person and so you potentially know people in
- 5:42your life that are complainers and grumble and
- 5:45they complain about everything. Do you want to
- 5:48be like that? Are you that person? Are you that
- 5:51reflection of potentially what you grew up in
- 5:54and your parents were like that, your grandparents
- 5:55were like that and so you are a negative Nancy
- 5:58or a Karen or like whatever is negative out there.
- 6:02Are you a positive folly? Do you look at the
- 6:04brighter side of everything? Do you know someone
- 6:06that is just always constantly in a good mood
- 6:08that is thankful for everything? Who do you want
- 6:10to reflect? And so looking at those people that
- 6:12are in your life, again, it goes back to our
- 6:14other episode about your friends. And so are
- 6:16your friends grumblers and complainers? Are they
- 6:18always nagging about their kids? Are they always
- 6:19nagging about their husband or their wives or
- 6:21whatever? And then you join in and then it's
- 6:23like this whole down roll and then you go home
- 6:25and you look at your kids and you're like, hi,
- 6:26I don't like you. And you look at your husband
- 6:28or your wife and you're like, oh my gosh. And
- 6:31so that negativity will just feed into all the
- 6:34areas and then you're grumbling and complaining
- 6:35about your job and versus, oh my gosh, like I
- 6:37prayed for this job. Oh, I forgot that I have
- 6:39a paycheck that comes in every two weeks or a
- 6:41week or a month. And I'm so thankful that I have
- 6:43this opportunity to serve Christ where he has
- 6:45me. And so look at the where we're complaining
- 6:48and where are we negative? And it is just so
- 6:51important. And the wise person. Speak slowly.
- 6:54And so my husband's favorite book is James, and
- 6:56so James 1 19 repeats the wisdom principle straight
- 6:59from Proverbs. Be quick to listen, slow to speak,
- 7:03and slow to become angry. Slow speech is spiritual
- 7:07maturity. Slowness gives the Holy Spirit room
- 7:11to work. And slowness saves relationships. Slowness
- 7:14is wisdom in motion. And so how many times have
- 7:18you just had to hold your tongue because you
- 7:20could have just popped off and knew exactly what
- 7:22to say, just to cut the other person's throat,
- 7:25but you didn't. That's a win. Slow speech is
- 7:29spiritual maturity. And just because you wanted
- 7:32us in that email, because you wanted us in that
- 7:34text, you didn't. You deleted it. That's great.
- 7:36That's a win. That's a win. Now, if you retyped
- 7:39it, now that's a whole different story, but at
- 7:42least you deleted it once. And again, it's about
- 7:44progression and not perfection. And that slowness
- 7:48can save a relationship because you could have
- 7:50spattered off something and that could have went
- 7:51down another whole rabbit hole. But that slowness
- 7:56gave the Holy Spirit to zip your lip and say,
- 7:58you know what? You did the same thing. You were
- 8:00acting just like them just two weeks ago. Where's
- 8:02your grace? Where's your mercy? And he will correct
- 8:05you. He will give you speech. He will give you
- 8:07exactly what you need to say in that moment.
- 8:10And so the mind is an invisible battlefield.
- 8:14And now we shift. To our mind so we just worked
- 8:18on our mouth and now let's work on our mind if
- 8:20the enemy can influence your thoughts He can
- 8:22influence your life The mind is where temptation
- 8:26temptations begin insecurity grows lies form
- 8:30anxiety spreads Identity is getting shaped and
- 8:35fear multiplies Faith is activated in your mind
- 8:38truth settles in your mind and spiritual battles
- 8:41are won or lost and Proverbs says this so powerfully
- 8:45In Proverbs 23 -7, it says, a man thinks within
- 8:49himself and so he is. And so what are you thinking
- 8:52about yourself? Negative or positive? Your life
- 8:57also moves in the direction of your strongest
- 9:00thoughts. And so if your thoughts are anxious,
- 9:04your life will feel chaotic. If your thoughts
- 9:06are negative, your life will feel hopeless. If
- 9:09your lives and your thoughts are fearful, your
- 9:13life will feel small. If your thoughts are godly,
- 9:17your life will feel grounded. And so what are
- 9:19your thoughts right now? What are you anxious
- 9:21about? What are you negative for? What are you
- 9:22fearing? Are your thoughts godly? Look at that.
- 9:28Take a pause and just sit with that. Write them
- 9:30down. And that way you can go back and or just
- 9:33pause this episode. Absolutely. Pause the episode
- 9:35and go and sit with God in these moments. Oh
- 9:37my gosh, like... I need to take inventory of
- 9:39my thoughts. I need to take captive those thoughts.
- 9:42And we talked about it before. You have to replace
- 9:44a lie with the truth. And how many times in Scripture
- 9:48does he said, do not be anxious, do not be nervous?
- 9:50Like 365 times in Scripture, he says, do not
- 9:52be anxious, do not be nervous. What are those
- 9:54thoughts? Are they actual truth? Are they in
- 9:57Scripture? Is this what God actually said about
- 9:58you? Did he say that we should be hopeless? Did
- 10:01he say that you should live fearfully? No, he
- 10:05didn't. Jeremiah 29, 11. the enemy Has a primary
- 10:12weapon of suggestion and that the mind is where
- 10:15Satan whispers you're not enough You're failing
- 10:19No one cares You're alone You're not loved You're
- 10:25always behind You won't overcome this You should
- 10:30just give up now These aren't bad thoughts. They
- 10:35are spiritual lies dressed as emotion. And Proverbs
- 10:40teaches that we must guard our minds because
- 10:43thoughts become beliefs and beliefs become choices.
- 10:49Choices become habits and habits become lifestyles
- 10:53and lifestyles become destinies. The battle of
- 10:56your mind is for your future. And so how do we
- 11:02guard our mind and mouth? And so here's some
- 11:05tips that I feel. can help you. One, filter your
- 11:10thoughts through scripture. Ask, is this true?
- 11:14Is this biblical? Does this reflect God's character?
- 11:18If not, reject it. Throw it out, water it up
- 11:21like a piece of paper and throw it in the trash.
- 11:23And if you need to, write that thought on a piece
- 11:25of paper. Whatever you're thinking about yourself,
- 11:27literally do it. Write it on a piece of paper,
- 11:30water it up and throw it away. Throw it away.
- 11:33Reject it. It's very cathartic. It's very much
- 11:35a literal thing that you can do and that way,
- 11:38you know, it's garbage. It's in the trash and
- 11:41so you're done. Two. Capture negative thoughts
- 11:45immediately. Don't let them take root and replace
- 11:48them with scripture. Don't let that negative
- 11:51thought take root. Don't go there and ruminate,
- 11:53ruminate, ruminate. Think about it. Think about
- 11:55it. Think about it. No. Take it immediately.
- 11:57Take it. Take that thought captive. Limit the
- 12:03voices that pollute your mind. Whether that's
- 12:05social media, whether that's a toxic friend,
- 12:08an unhealthy show that you're watching, critical
- 12:11environments, garbage in, garbage out. Four.
- 12:18Practice silence and solitude. Wisdom grows in
- 12:22a quiet heart. Sit with God. You don't have to
- 12:25talk all the time. And then get used to the whole
- 12:29awkward silence. It's not awkward. It's allowing
- 12:32God to speak into your life. Five, surround yourself
- 12:37with the wise people. Wise voices produce wise
- 12:40thoughts. Speak life intentionally. Every day,
- 12:45choose to bless and not curse. Seven, pause before
- 12:51speaking. A five second pause can prevent a five
- 12:55year wound. Before you speak, take a deep breath.
- 13:00Count out five. Count out five. One, two, three,
- 13:05four, five. If you need to repeat that 25 times,
- 13:09then do it. But what you say can have lasting
- 13:13impacts. Eight. Don't react emotionally. Wisdom
- 13:18responds and foolishness reacts. Take time. Don't
- 13:24react based on anger. How you feel because your
- 13:27emotions are like the wind. they are going to
- 13:30change. Nine, pray over your mind daily. Invite
- 13:35the Holy Spirit to renew your thoughts every
- 13:37day. Renew my mind, metanoia. Renew my mind.
- 13:41Renew what how I'm thinking. I want to think
- 13:43the way that you think. I want to see the way
- 13:44that you see. I want to hear what you hear. I
- 13:47want to have those ears that hear your voice.
- 13:50Make me deaf to what is not serving me. And ten,
- 13:54my favorite, memorize scripture. Truth renews
- 13:57the mind faster than anything. Memorizing scripture
- 14:00is so important. And I was just bragging on my,
- 14:03on Gia's old school at New Horizon. And they
- 14:06memorize scripture every week. And whenever she
- 14:08was in kindergarten, they had to memorize, I
- 14:11think it was Luke 2? like 1 through 30, the whole
- 14:16Jesus story, they memorized it and she still
- 14:20knows it. So to this day, and it's so important
- 14:23that we just hold those truths on because we
- 14:25can take that in that moment whenever we don't
- 14:26have the Bible out. We don't have a Bible in
- 14:28front of us. No way. I remember that. No, that's
- 14:29not what Proverbs said. Hey, that was taken out
- 14:31of context. And that way when someone tries to
- 14:33beat you with scripture, you can take that and
- 14:35be like, no, I've already studied that. I've
- 14:37spent time with God. And this is actually what
- 14:38that means. You've taken that out of context.
- 14:41And so it's so important that we know what scripture
- 14:44says. We know the context behind it and who said
- 14:46it, why they said it. And it's just so important
- 14:48to spend that time in scripture. And so we know
- 14:51what it actually means. And so your mouth and
- 14:54your mind are spiritual steering wheels. Your
- 14:56life will always Follow the direction. And so
- 15:00what are you looking forward? Are you driving
- 15:02down a rocky road? Are you driving down this
- 15:04highway? And the car is steering itself. And
- 15:08so your life will always follow the direction
- 15:10of your mouth and your mind. The words that you
- 15:13speak and the thoughts that you entertain. If
- 15:14you want a wise life, discipline your speech.
- 15:19If you want a peaceful life, you have to discipline
- 15:21your mind. And wisdom is formed internally before
- 15:24it shows externally. and just the roots of bamboo.
- 15:27And so it's growing down deep. It's growing three
- 15:30years in the ground before it shoots up. And
- 15:34so if you are utilizing the workbooks that we
- 15:36hope you are on fosteringfaithmedia .com, the
- 15:39workbook assignment for this week is where do
- 15:41you guard your, where do I need to guard my mouth
- 15:43or mind more intentionally? And so overreacting,
- 15:49is that an area? Places where negative thoughts
- 15:51creep in, thought patterns that drain them. conversational
- 15:55habits that you need to break, relationships
- 15:58affected by careless speech, and specific lies
- 16:02that you've believed. What are those areas that
- 16:04you need to guard your mind or your mouth in
- 16:06this week? And what are your habits? And so pick
- 16:10one habit that you will begin this week to guard
- 16:12your mouth and mind. Is it the five -second pause
- 16:16before you respond? Is it the no -gossip rule?
- 16:20Is it declare scripture daily? Limit your social
- 16:23media. Replace one lie with truth. Practice gratitude
- 16:28more intentionally. Guard morning thoughts. Guard
- 16:33your evening thoughts. Is it speak blessings
- 16:36over your home? One shift of your mouth or mind
- 16:41reshapes your entire atmosphere. Please take
- 16:45that into account how you talk today, how you
- 16:48think today. Today's Thursday and so you have
- 16:50a reset potentially. for this weekend and that
- 16:53way you can go into next week better than what
- 16:56you were this week. And again, it's about progression
- 16:59and not perfection. And so if this message inspired
- 17:02you, send it to a friend, share it on social
- 17:04media, leave us a comment and let's grow together
- 17:07and let's foster our faith. And so we would love
- 17:09to pray for you this week. Dear Heavenly Father,
- 17:11thank you so much that you are allowing us to
- 17:14guard our mouth, renew our mind. Thank you that
- 17:17we speak life and wisdom and truth. Thank you
- 17:20for the silence that lies. And that's just sitting
- 17:23with you. Thank you that for every calm that
- 17:26you've given us for every fear Thank you that

- 17:44we are gonna be talking about wisdom for your
- 17:46future We love you guys. Stay tuned for next
- 17:48week
