- 0:00You can't whistle a Symphony. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #1200 and eight to upgrade
- 0:09your mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:14yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:16Rachel Carson. Before we get into the story, I
- 0:19wanted to mention something. I make these daily messages
- 0:23first. For me, I need to tell myself a
- 0:27better story every day. But I also believe giving is the
- 0:30highest level of living, so I'm thankful for technology that can
- 0:33easily share these messages with others.
- 0:36These daily messages are listened to thousands of times
- 0:39each month and 120 countries Now isn't that something?
- 0:43The second biggest audience behind the USA is Japan.
- 0:47I believe in these messages. They help me.
- 0:51I know I'll never stop needing to tell myself a better story.
- 0:54So, God willing, if I keep telling these daily stories,
- 0:58will you do me one favor and tell them to whatever that looks
- 1:02like? I just know I can't tell these
- 1:04stories alone. Here's the upgrade.
- 1:09You think you can go it alone, but upgraded thinking knows
- 1:12nothing exists alone. Here's the story. 2 old team
- 1:18mates run into each other at homecoming 25 years after
- 1:22graduation. Ted was an All American
- 1:25volleyball player who became one of the most powerful CE OS in
- 1:28the country. Joe was the captain of their
- 1:31undefeated team. Now Joe is a minister in town.
- 1:36Ted walks up and says Joe, I want to thank you for making me
- 1:41the success I am today. Joe just laughs, Stop pulling my
- 1:46leg. We haven't seen each other in
- 1:48years. It drove me crazy that the guys
- 1:51voted you captain and not me, Ted says.
- 1:55So before graduation I asked coach why.
- 1:59Coach told him, Ted, you're the best player I've ever coached.
- 2:04Joe doesn't have half your talent.
- 2:06You were the best player on the team, but Joe was the best
- 2:11player for the team. You want to be the best player
- 2:14in the country. Joe wanted us to be the best
- 2:17team in the country. Ted never forgot it.
- 2:21The old me wanted my company to be the best company in the
- 2:24world. Now I wanted to be the best
- 2:27company for the world. On versus for one little word, a
- 2:34whole different life. Stephen Covey called this the
- 2:38maturity continuum. We start out dependent.
- 2:42You take care of me, we grow into independence.
- 2:46I can do it myself. Most people stop there and call
- 2:50it success. But the top of the continuum is
- 2:53interdependence. We can do it together and do it
- 2:56better. Independence is a stage.
- 2:59It shouldn't be a place that you live, the conservationist Rachel
- 3:04Carson said. In nature, nothing exists alone.
- 3:09I think that's a first principle.
- 3:10Not a fish, not a leaf, not me, not you.
- 3:14Nobody made it through college alone.
- 3:15Nobody built a business alone. You didn't even change yourself
- 3:19by yourself. Somebody taught you to read.
- 3:21Somebody hired you. Somebody stayed up with you.
- 3:25Halford Lecock put it this way. No one can whistle a Symphony.
- 3:30It takes an orchestra to play it.
- 3:32Where are you on the maturity continuum?
- 3:36You can't opt out of the team. You can only choose how you play
- 3:40on it. The world gets worse when people
- 3:42get independent or worse, isolate.
- 3:46Nothing exists alone. You are part of an ecosystem,
- 3:51many ecosystems, in your home, at work, around town, in the
- 3:55world. The better story to tell
- 3:57yourself is I don't just play on the team, I play for the team.
- 4:03Your team might be your family, your office, your church, your
- 4:06neighborhood. Today.
- 4:07Ask what the team needs from you, not what you need from the
- 4:10team. Pick up your instrument and play
- 4:13your part. Tell me a story of someone who
- 4:16was the best player for a team you were on to from
- 4:19chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and tell
- 4:23them thanks for playing for the team.
