- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network.
- 0:14Speaker 1: It's Thursday. That means it's time to enter the Thursday Thunderdome.
- 0:23Speaker 1: On today's show, our special guests will compete alongside my
- 0:27Speaker 1: co host, Professional Sports Better Simon Hunter, might be ff
- 0:31Speaker 1: my compadre in an epic test of wagers and wits
- 0:35Speaker 1: that's made this show the most celebrated sports betting trivia
- 0:39Speaker 1: show in history and the marvel of the Western world. Simon,
- 0:47Speaker 1: I agree with everything that Matt Mitchell, producer Extraordinary scripted
- 0:52Speaker 1: for me to say there. I was away last week,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and I do feel the world tilted a little bit
- 0:57Speaker 1: off its access without us being able to do this together. Yeah,
- 1:02Speaker 1: I definitely enjoy it. I'm not gonna lie chat. I
- 1:04Speaker 1: felt like I was back to my old life before
- 1:06Speaker 1: I had to work for you, and I was just
- 1:08Speaker 1: some guy that I literally had an off season football
- 1:10Speaker 1: end and I would just get to do nothing. And
- 1:12Speaker 1: it was just as as much as I hate doing nothing,
- 1:15Speaker 1: it's also a little stressful this job. I gotta actually
- 1:17Speaker 1: show up somewhere on time and do stuff, where usually
- 1:20Speaker 1: I just start drinking I wake up in the off season,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'll just start drinking, watch some soccer, maybe tennis, maybe
- 1:26Speaker 1: a little baseball. Now I have to be sober, and uh,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I feel bad last week. I mean on Tuesday, Chad,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I didn't let you describe your holidday. I know how
- 1:34Speaker 1: much Chad loves talking about himself. Chad, how is your
- 1:37Speaker 1: trip to Cape Cod? Well, listen, let me tell you something,
- 1:39Speaker 1: sim And I'm glad you asked. And I don't want
- 1:41Speaker 1: to keep our guests waiting for too long because they
- 1:43Speaker 1: have Hall of Fame credentials quite literally. But I will
- 1:46Speaker 1: tell you mentioned in your off season, when you're not
- 1:49Speaker 1: working on your vacation, whatever it is, you'll get up,
- 1:52Speaker 1: You'll get drunk, you'll watch sports. I got up super early,
- 1:56Speaker 1: was away with my wife, our kids, my sister, her husband,
- 1:59Speaker 1: their kids, rented a big house in Cape Cod because
- 2:02Speaker 1: you know, I'm super rich now. And when we would
- 2:05Speaker 1: get up in the morning, I would make a Macha ti.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I brought the match of powder with me. I brought
- 2:12Speaker 1: the Japanese whisk, I whisked it up, I poured it
- 2:15Speaker 1: into my green tea. Then my sister and I would
- 2:17Speaker 1: take a walk into town. We'd have an espresso. We
- 2:20Speaker 1: take a walk back. A couple of mornings, we took
- 2:23Speaker 1: long runs. A couple of mornings, we did like really
- 2:26Speaker 1: extra credit hardcore runs where we're sprinting. I felt like
- 2:30Speaker 1: I was living my best self on vacation. You're doing this.
- 2:34Speaker 1: You don't just do this at home? No, I did
- 2:36Speaker 1: it on vacation. I felt fantastic. What do you do
- 2:38Speaker 1: at home? You just lay around and watching Netflix? No,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I do the same thing, only then I go to work.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Here about eight thirty, I was done with everything. You
- 2:44Speaker 1: truly are a man that cannot take a day off
- 2:46Speaker 1: ever stopped grinding. Simon, speaking of which, talk about grinding.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Your first challenger is the most decorated specialist in NFL history.
- 2:58Speaker 1: He's one of just two kickers in the Pro Football
- 3:01Speaker 1: Hall of Fame, and he connected over one hundred game
- 3:05Speaker 1: winning field goals in a career that spanned a full
- 3:08Speaker 1: twenty five years. A man known affectionately as the Great
- 3:11Speaker 1: Dane and the co host of the Great Dane Nation podcast.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Our very first Hall of Fame contestant, Morten Anderson, thank
- 3:21Speaker 1: you for having me, guys. I was hanging on every
- 3:23Speaker 1: word about that Cape cot good. Can you just email
- 3:26Speaker 1: me the rest on that that would be great. It's
- 3:29Speaker 1: like you and Simon planned it. You came in hot,
- 3:32Speaker 1: ready to take you down. I will say this in
- 3:34Speaker 1: all seriousness. I've listened to the Great Dane Nation podcast.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I enjoy it, and you went when you have a
- 3:40Speaker 1: lot of high profile guests on there, and a couple
- 3:44Speaker 1: of times I've listened to you say this to Bill Murray.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I've listened to you say this to Sean Payton. The
- 3:51Speaker 1: way you talk about feeling pressure to me is fascinating.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And before we get to our next guest, uh, can
- 4:00Speaker 1: you just explain a little bit, describe a little bit
- 4:02Speaker 1: about how you define pressure. Yes, so I don't particularly
- 4:07Speaker 1: use the word pressure. I think it's a has a
- 4:10Speaker 1: negative connotation. So I prefer to flip the script on
- 4:13Speaker 1: on the word and and think more proactively about it.
- 4:17Speaker 1: We all deal with perceived this tasteful situations differently. The
- 4:22Speaker 1: way I like to look at it and the way
- 4:24Speaker 1: I like can teach it and communicate it is simply
- 4:27Speaker 1: that perceived pressure only happens when your skill set to
- 4:32Speaker 1: complete the task doesn't match the task. In other words,
- 4:36Speaker 1: this is not in my wheelhouse. Man, I can't do this.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I've never done this. I haven't trained to do this,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I haven't earned the right to do this. And that's
- 4:46Speaker 1: when you you're going to feel some discomfort. My whole
- 4:49Speaker 1: notion about these situations that define us, these big moments
- 4:53Speaker 1: in big games, which I certainly had my share, and uh,
- 4:57Speaker 1: you know, watching the Euro right now, watching penalty kicks
- 5:02Speaker 1: after extended time. I mean, you talk about somebody who
- 5:05Speaker 1: has to step up to that spot and deliver a
- 5:08Speaker 1: penalty kick. How are those guys being taught? What are
- 5:11Speaker 1: they thinking? Are they letting the game come to them?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Are they trying to force themselves on the game and
- 5:16Speaker 1: feeling all this heat on them? Clearly you can see
- 5:20Speaker 1: right away in their eyes who is not up for it,
- 5:23Speaker 1: who's not up to the task, and who actually rests
- 5:26Speaker 1: in themselves, who allow the situation to come in and
- 5:30Speaker 1: then let the preparation take over. And I think that's
- 5:33Speaker 1: my whole point with with the notion of this perceived pressure,
- 5:38Speaker 1: if that's kind of what I'm at with it. I
- 5:40Speaker 1: love the positivity, I love the framing. I love the
- 5:43Speaker 1: way you say it. You've exhibited it, you did exhibit
- 5:47Speaker 1: it in twenty five years of winning in the NFL
- 5:50Speaker 1: and a Hall of Fame career, Simon, this is how
- 5:53Speaker 1: we should be approaching betting during the NFL season. We're ready.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I wish I had half of his confidence because everything
- 6:00Speaker 1: you said, I was like, I'm that guy, Like even
- 6:02Speaker 1: when I win ten bets in a row, I'm just like, Okay,
- 6:05Speaker 1: now I'm gonna go oh in ten the next time.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It's just always right around the corner, Simon. But Simon,
- 6:11Speaker 1: the difference between standing in front of a situation where
- 6:14Speaker 1: you're gonna win a game with a field goal and
- 6:16Speaker 1: betting is that you're not driving the car. I'm driving
- 6:20Speaker 1: the car. You're not driving the car. You're depending on
- 6:22Speaker 1: outside forces, i e. Two teams to play the game,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and then you take a side, and then you wait
- 6:29Speaker 1: and hope. That's why we when we bet and wager,
- 6:32Speaker 1: we we are on pins and needles because we're not
- 6:35Speaker 1: driving the car. More and you have so much to learn,
- 6:38Speaker 1: my young Paddowan, to learn to say. I like Morton's
- 6:42Speaker 1: first answer better because then it uh forced Simon to think,
- 6:46Speaker 1: oh my god, I have to be winning because I've
- 6:48Speaker 1: done this so often. The second answer kind of let
- 6:50Speaker 1: him off the huk. Yeah I did. I did, But
- 6:52Speaker 1: we'll see. Let's see. Let's see if Morton can redeve
- 6:55Speaker 1: himself throughout the game. Simon, your second challenger, is the
- 6:58Speaker 1: producer half of the Great Day Nation podcast on Vegas Insider,
- 7:02Speaker 1: a veteran of ESPN Radio, Fox Sports Radio, the Sports
- 7:07Speaker 1: Hub in Boston. Also a Draft Kings contributor, and one
- 7:10Speaker 1: of the hardest working men in the audio game. Tom
- 7:14Speaker 1: Carol a k a. Tommy Freeze Pops, what's going on everybody? Hey, Morton,
- 7:22Speaker 1: thank you for all of that wisdom at the top
- 7:26Speaker 1: of this podcast. Here, I've heard you heard that story
- 7:29Speaker 1: approximately forty three times now, so good to go here.
- 7:35Speaker 1: The way, you know what, if I listen to that
- 7:38Speaker 1: story every day and I put that up on my wall,
- 7:41Speaker 1: it still wouldn't be enough, because that is the way
- 7:43Speaker 1: to live. That is about living with positivity and optimism.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It's my credo at this point. You know, play like
- 7:49Speaker 1: a champion today. Instead of hitting that sign when I
- 7:51Speaker 1: get out of bed, I hit that entire story about pressure.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It's just true. Anybody who has done something often enough
- 7:59Speaker 1: and had to perform that task in a situation on
- 8:03Speaker 1: a daily basis, if they're doing it when there is
- 8:07Speaker 1: perceived opportunity that is greater than what they're normally is.
- 8:10Speaker 1: They should still be confident enough to do it. That's
- 8:12Speaker 1: just that's the way. Yeah, to take it one step further,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you know, it's behavior that becomes discipline, that creates a
- 8:19Speaker 1: behavior with a decided result that you train so much
- 8:23Speaker 1: it becomes unconscious competence, It becomes dominant, so it kills
- 8:28Speaker 1: everything else. It kills all the negativity. He has a
- 8:32Speaker 1: Hall of Fame bust behind him, and I have a refrigerator. Well, listen,
- 8:36Speaker 1: in this game, Simon Hunter has exhibited unconscious dominance the
- 8:42Speaker 1: past couple of weeks, So let's see if you two
- 8:45Speaker 1: can knock him off. Here's how the game is played.
- 8:49Speaker 1: You'll answer two kinds of questions. First, traditional trivia questions
- 8:53Speaker 1: about sports, sports, betting, and the world at large. Second,
- 8:57Speaker 1: completely subjective, totally ass and I and open ended questions
- 9:01Speaker 1: your prompts that I alone will judge. To accumulate points,
- 9:08Speaker 1: you must answer the trivia questions correctly and also convince
- 9:13Speaker 1: me that your responses to those open ended prompts are
- 9:18Speaker 1: better than the responses from your opponents. Let's begin Part
- 9:24Speaker 1: one den marks the spot. Let's see if we can
- 9:30Speaker 1: get all the puns we can. Our special guest, Morton Anderson,
- 9:34Speaker 1: is known as the Great Dane because he hails from
- 9:37Speaker 1: Copenhagen and a long successful NFL career has made him
- 9:41Speaker 1: the most beloved Danish athlete in America. In honor of
- 9:45Speaker 1: Morton and the Action Networks new Danish ownership at Better Collective,
- 9:49Speaker 1: I'll ask each of you to Denmark related questions Morton, Morton.
- 10:00Speaker 1: As you know, Denmark is the ancestral homeland of team handball.
- 10:04Speaker 1: The Danes have won the last two handball world titles
- 10:07Speaker 1: and other reigning Olympic champions. Many consider the Olympics to
- 10:12Speaker 1: be the site of the greatest upset in handball history.
- 10:16Speaker 1: That's summer, the Croatian Olympic team shocked the world by
- 10:20Speaker 1: capturing the gold medal over this nation known to many
- 10:24Speaker 1: Americans as the home of Vovo. Okay, what is Sweden?
- 10:32Speaker 1: Very good? Very good? Morton. Also, you don't have to
- 10:36Speaker 1: put it in the in the form of the last
- 10:41Speaker 1: thing I can do is be ready to replace Alex Trebeck.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I am just not confident in Rogers. You know you
- 10:47Speaker 1: might see Aaron. That's right, Morton. When learning the Danish language,
- 10:51Speaker 1: many English speakers struggle with the fact that Danish contains
- 10:56Speaker 1: no word for this the most common English word when
- 11:01Speaker 1: asking for something politely. What is that word? Please? Very good?
- 11:08Speaker 1: So what do you if you want to? If you
- 11:10Speaker 1: say via Venley at even my in cafue, can I
- 11:14Speaker 1: have a coffee Veinley, then least with pleasure? With yeah,
- 11:19Speaker 1: But you're right, it's not in the Danish vernacular. It's
- 11:22Speaker 1: not common. But they are very polite people. They have
- 11:25Speaker 1: their moments. Yeah, they picked their spots. I think, all right, Tony.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Most metal heads know that Lars are At the drummer
- 11:34Speaker 1: and co founder of this world famous heavy metal band.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I was born in Denmark in nineteen sixty three. What
- 11:40Speaker 1: is the band? I might get some crap for not
- 11:44Speaker 1: knowing this, but I'm gonna guess Volby. Dude, Look that's
- 11:50Speaker 1: Morten's favorite band. I know they're Danish. That was my guess.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Maybe I gotta take a laugh. It's fucking Metallica. What
- 11:57Speaker 1: is the matter? That was my next as like, come on, man,
- 12:03Speaker 1: that's coming out HoTT. You didn't think of it at all.
- 12:09Speaker 1: It's trivial pursuit. Your first answer is the right answer.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Tommy Denmark has the oldest recognized national flag. The current
- 12:17Speaker 1: design has been used for over eight hundred years. However,
- 12:22Speaker 1: some scholars have called this into question and believe the
- 12:26Speaker 1: oldest flag distinction may belong to this nation, the northern
- 12:33Speaker 1: most country on the island of Great Britain, the northernmost country.
- 12:41Speaker 1: So I'm gonna guess Scotland. You gotta right, Tommy, you
- 12:46Speaker 1: nailed it. Yes, thank God for Google Earth. Un Denmark's
- 12:53Speaker 1: greatest cultural contribution. Maybe these tiny, colorful, interlocking plastic bricks legs.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I know the Danes could claim legos. That's pretty cool.
- 13:05Speaker 1: You've never told me that more and I feel it's
- 13:09Speaker 1: kid Christiansen family from Belon. Lego Land is Belon Denmark.
- 13:13Speaker 1: If you ever visit, you have to go to Lego
- 13:15Speaker 1: Land as a kid. I went there. It is It's
- 13:18Speaker 1: only getting better, dude. They keep improving it now. They
- 13:21Speaker 1: have the rights to Harry Potter's the airport too, So
- 13:24Speaker 1: if you you have kids and you go to Europe,
- 13:25Speaker 1: you have to check it out. That's awesome. Simon, you've
- 13:28Speaker 1: been to Lego Land. Yeah, I don't want to go
- 13:30Speaker 1: into Lego because I have a problem, but like I
- 13:32Speaker 1: have Legos behind me up here. I used to be
- 13:34Speaker 1: really into legos as a kid. Cool. Well, this is fascinating. Okay,
- 13:39Speaker 1: email me the arrest Simon, exactly, Simon. When we're done,
- 13:44Speaker 1: let's talk more about my trip to kip Cat Simon.
- 13:47Speaker 1: It's a good thing in America. If a person remains
- 13:50Speaker 1: unmarried on their twenty five birthday, one of Denmark's most
- 13:55Speaker 1: unique traditions is to publicly cover them in this spice,
- 14:01Speaker 1: most commonly seen in oatmeal or apple pie cinnamon. Yes,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and by the way, what the fuck? Yeah? Why did
- 14:10Speaker 1: they do that? You know, when you get married. They
- 14:13Speaker 1: caught the toes soft the man's socks because so you
- 14:16Speaker 1: won't sleep in another woman's bed. That's symbolic. I don't know.
- 14:21Speaker 1: What the hell. What does that have to do with
- 14:22Speaker 1: cinnamon Mortan, Well, it's just another tradition that's weird. I
- 14:25Speaker 1: don't know it has to do with Danish traditions. Well, listen,
- 14:30Speaker 1: the Danes are lovely people and they have lovely traditions.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And is a huge fan of cinnamon, and as a
- 14:35Speaker 1: health pot I tend to put cinnamon on my food
- 14:38Speaker 1: instead of salt because it gives it a little more
- 14:40Speaker 1: flavor and salt isn't always great for you, so I'm
- 14:42Speaker 1: all for these good health benefits too. Here's the prompt, fellows,
- 14:45Speaker 1: here's the prompt. We can all get behind the Danish
- 14:48Speaker 1: tradition of throwing cinnamon at twentysomething singles, but what about
- 14:51Speaker 1: a new tradition for gamblers. Whether we're talking about the Olympics,
- 14:55Speaker 1: the World Cup, or any other international competition, gamblers must
- 14:59Speaker 1: often choose is between patriotism and pragmatism. Do you bet
- 15:04Speaker 1: with your heart or your head? Your task is to
- 15:07Speaker 1: create a new tradition, a new public shaming spectacle for
- 15:13Speaker 1: your fellow country man caught placing a bet against your
- 15:18Speaker 1: home country and losing. Simon born in England, huge English
- 15:25Speaker 1: football fan, went bizonkers on the podcast on Tuesday when
- 15:30Speaker 1: England beat Germany with two goals while the podcast was
- 15:33Speaker 1: being recorded, Please respond, this is tough. I bet against
- 15:36Speaker 1: the Eagles constantly. It's my job to not be, you know,
- 15:40Speaker 1: skewed one way or another. Like I try not to
- 15:42Speaker 1: be biased in my job, but when it comes to
- 15:44Speaker 1: your country, you must always be biased. I've never bet
- 15:47Speaker 1: against England in my whole life, even though they're gonna
- 15:50Speaker 1: lose to Ukraine. As an England fan, this is when
- 15:52Speaker 1: they lose. They beat Germany and then they're gonna lose
- 15:54Speaker 1: to Ukraine. That's just what England does. So I'm not
- 15:57Speaker 1: gonna bet against them, but it's a smart bet to
- 15:59Speaker 1: you bet against them. I feel like in England though,
- 16:01Speaker 1: if you get caught betting against your home country, man,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I feel like the worst punishment would be a year
- 16:06Speaker 1: ban from the pub. If you couldn't go to the
- 16:08Speaker 1: pub for a year, I think that would really really,
- 16:11Speaker 1: I think there is not much what worst punishment you
- 16:14Speaker 1: could do to someone in England, and that you're a
- 16:17Speaker 1: accurate as someone who lived in London for six months
- 16:20Speaker 1: every day midday was spent in the pub. They just
- 16:23Speaker 1: I thought it was the most wonderful thing. It's shut down.
- 16:26Speaker 1: People took a nice, relaxing long publish lunch. This would
- 16:31Speaker 1: be tough. This would be tough, Tommy your next. So
- 16:35Speaker 1: I would go with my betting friends, the guys that
- 16:40Speaker 1: tell me the right things to do in the way
- 16:43Speaker 1: of wagering when betting on international competition, because I gotta
- 16:48Speaker 1: be honest when it comes to these international sports like
- 16:51Speaker 1: Olympic sports or even soccer. I'm not a huge soccer guy,
- 16:55Speaker 1: so I don't know a whole lot. And when I'm betting,
- 16:59Speaker 1: I want to win, So I gotta go with the numbers.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I gotta go with the smart dudes that know more
- 17:05Speaker 1: than me about gambling. If someone's telling me, hey, you
- 17:10Speaker 1: know you gotta wager on Jamaica in this bob sledding
- 17:14Speaker 1: competition over the US, I'm gonna do it. Tommy. Let
- 17:18Speaker 1: me stop you right there. Okay, you're not answering the question.
- 17:22Speaker 1: The question is question is skating around dude, Tommy. It's
- 17:26Speaker 1: like his head is swimming in cinnamon right now. The
- 17:29Speaker 1: question was if someone caught you placing a bet against
- 17:32Speaker 1: the United States and you lose, what should the public
- 17:36Speaker 1: shaming spectacle be Benedictdonald put on stage in that person's hometown.
- 17:42Speaker 1: For me, it would be the Dunkin Donut Center in Providence,
- 17:45Speaker 1: Rhode Island. That person would have to take a citizenship
- 17:49Speaker 1: test on stage in front of a loud, angry arena.
- 17:53Speaker 1: The test would be administered by that person's high school
- 17:57Speaker 1: Civics teacher, one question at a time, one minute to answer.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Question does not be repeated. You either get it or
- 18:05Speaker 1: you don't. And if you don't get a ninety on
- 18:08Speaker 1: the test with this loud crowd yelling at you, you're
- 18:11Speaker 1: deported for one year. That is called the fucking rally
- 18:16Speaker 1: because after the first one I was ready to kick
- 18:19Speaker 1: your off the podcast, but you came on strong that
- 18:22Speaker 1: that was the definition of skill set meeting moment, and
- 18:27Speaker 1: you living up to the opportunity. Let's see if Martin
- 18:31Speaker 1: can beat you. Because I'm not a fan of soccer.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I liked cinnamon, so let's color the cinnamon red. Throw
- 18:38Speaker 1: people in the canal right in New Haven, which is
- 18:40Speaker 1: Newhound in Copenhagen. So as the private so wet, etcetera.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Let's let's apply some electro whatever you call those connectors
- 18:49Speaker 1: to to each uh, each vegetable, and then let's uh,
- 18:54Speaker 1: you know, he has to kind of wear that for
- 18:56Speaker 1: twenty four hours. If subject matter ever ever goes goes
- 19:01Speaker 1: there again, you know, I'll be sitting at a pup
- 19:04Speaker 1: and I'll administer the battery operated shocked to to the
- 19:08Speaker 1: privates of subject matter that screwed up and went against
- 19:13Speaker 1: the country of his birth. For God's sake, It's unfathomable.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It cannot happen. I don't know's I don't know what
- 19:22Speaker 1: to say here. That is some six ship, angry, deep
- 19:27Speaker 1: seated bad ship. But I'll tell you what. You can't
- 19:31Speaker 1: go against the country. I do like it. Here's here's
- 19:34Speaker 1: the thing. So they've been publicly shamed, They've they've been
- 19:38Speaker 1: thrown into the canal. They're coming out there dawst in cinnamon. Yeah,
- 19:44Speaker 1: like a big Danish flag. That, by the way, that
- 19:47Speaker 1: kind of would have been enough for the answer, But
- 19:49Speaker 1: then you took it next level and like the next
- 19:51Speaker 1: part isn't even public shaming. That's just sort of pure
- 19:56Speaker 1: evil intent to inflict pain and distress, the addedly air
- 20:00Speaker 1: of emotional and physical distress. I'm giving you the point.
- 20:05Speaker 1: You came on strong, you kicked the game winning field
- 20:08Speaker 1: goal at just the right time. Here we go. Part
- 20:11Speaker 1: of the pulps are closed. I can't believe it. S
- 20:15Speaker 1: Part two two to two thousand seven. In our continued
- 20:20Speaker 1: journey of pandering to our guest Morten Anderson, we now
- 20:24Speaker 1: highlight his almost inconceivable athletic accomplishment of playing NFL football,
- 20:29Speaker 1: starting after the nine eight two draft and ending after
- 20:34Speaker 1: the two thousand seven season, and incredible twenty five years later,
- 20:39Speaker 1: but twenty five is just a number. Let's dive into
- 20:42Speaker 1: just how much changed between nineteen eighty two and two
- 20:46Speaker 1: thousand seven. Simon Europe. First heading into Morton's rookie season
- 20:52Speaker 1: in nine eight two, this a f C team moved
- 20:56Speaker 1: to another city within the same state, but by the
- 21:00Speaker 1: time he retired in two thousand seven, they returned to
- 21:05Speaker 1: their original home. Today they play in a new city
- 21:09Speaker 1: in a bordering state. Oh my god, there's just way
- 21:14Speaker 1: too my twist and turns, that's so easy. The Tennessee Titans.
- 21:22Speaker 1: It's the Raiders, ah A Raiders, Oakland Raiders, Vegas Raiders.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Let's go Simon. You can't be an expert on a pod, dude.
- 21:31Speaker 1: If you don't know that before you listen, don't get
- 21:34Speaker 1: too big for your bridges. You're up next, alright. Shortly
- 21:38Speaker 1: after you were drafted by the Saints, the team traded
- 21:42Speaker 1: their beloved quarterback Archie Manning. Five years later, shortly after
- 21:47Speaker 1: you made your last field goal for the Atlanta Falcons,
- 21:51Speaker 1: this quarterback would win his first of two Super Bowl
- 21:57Speaker 1: m v ps uh Peyton Many Eli Manning, Dude, I
- 22:13Speaker 1: got crossed. Yikes, okay, don't I'm not worthy of g
- 22:19Speaker 1: d N man find a new host. Oh wow, Tommy,
- 22:26Speaker 1: workers broke ground on the construction of a stadium eventually
- 22:31Speaker 1: named the r C A Dome. It was built in
- 22:34Speaker 1: the hopes of landing and an NFL franchise for the city,
- 22:37Speaker 1: and it worked. A team relocated there before construction was
- 22:42Speaker 1: even completed. They'd win just one Super Bowl for the city,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and two years later, shortly after Morten Anderson's final game,
- 22:54Speaker 1: the r C A Dome was demolished. Where was the
- 22:59Speaker 1: r c Adom? What's city? Indianapolis, Indiana? Morton Anderson's first
- 23:05Speaker 1: home in North America and David's high school baby. That
- 23:09Speaker 1: would have been a nice tid bit to throw in
- 23:11Speaker 1: there by the way. See, that's that's the producing research.
- 23:15Speaker 1: That's that research. But we're all different. As an im
- 23:21Speaker 1: I know exactly where that is India got Part two.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Here's the prompt. Morton Anderson's career span twenty five years
- 23:28Speaker 1: and a lot changed from his rookie year to his
- 23:30Speaker 1: retirement today. I want you to look ahead to the
- 23:33Speaker 1: two thousand NFL season. Your job is to paint a
- 23:38Speaker 1: picture of what you believe the NFL will become. Then
- 23:41Speaker 1: sell me on the league's single most surprising change. Okay,
- 23:47Speaker 1: so I think the league a couple of things you're
- 23:49Speaker 1: gonna see here. We're gonna be about a decade into
- 23:52Speaker 1: two international expansion teams. We'll see a team in London.
- 23:56Speaker 1: We'll see a team in Mexico City. Arch Manning is
- 23:59Speaker 1: going to be on year twenty of his future Hall
- 24:02Speaker 1: of Fame career, and a sixty eight year old Tom
- 24:05Speaker 1: Brady will be defending Super Bowl champion for the Bucks
- 24:09Speaker 1: because I don't think that guy is ever leaving Florida,
- 24:12Speaker 1: and honestly, the Detroit Lions will probably still have not
- 24:15Speaker 1: appeared in a Super Bowl. So once we get all
- 24:18Speaker 1: of that out of the way, I think the biggest
- 24:20Speaker 1: single change, and I think you're gonna see this sooner
- 24:23Speaker 1: rather than later, is age restrictions as it relates to
- 24:27Speaker 1: the NFL draft. I think as young athletes in America
- 24:30Speaker 1: continue to get more and more power, you're gonna see
- 24:33Speaker 1: a push for this three year limit thing to go away.
- 24:37Speaker 1: You saw guys like Jadeveon Clowney who were ready to
- 24:40Speaker 1: play in the NFL his senior year of high school.
- 24:43Speaker 1: That guy missed out on three years of earning potential.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And you look at the injuries he's dealt with over
- 24:48Speaker 1: the last few years. He could have been making millions
- 24:51Speaker 1: of dollars for three years before he started making millions
- 24:54Speaker 1: of dollars. Marcus Lattimore has a debilitating knee injury his
- 24:58Speaker 1: junior year and never plays a snap abound felt football.
- 25:00Speaker 1: That guy could have been making millions, So I think
- 25:04Speaker 1: that goes away at some point. I'm not saying you're
- 25:06Speaker 1: gonna see a pipeline of high school guys to the
- 25:08Speaker 1: NFL like we saw in the NBA for a while,
- 25:10Speaker 1: but there's gonna be dudes like Clowney that get a
- 25:13Speaker 1: shot at a young age because they should. I don't
- 25:16Speaker 1: mind it. It's interesting, Morton, your answer, please, A couple
- 25:20Speaker 1: of changes that are gonna happen. I think you're gonna
- 25:22Speaker 1: have a four point sixty yard field goals, So if
- 25:25Speaker 1: a field goal over six yards will be four points,
- 25:28Speaker 1: you're gonna have more of a running clock. Let's face it,
- 25:30Speaker 1: the games are too long, so the clock will run
- 25:33Speaker 1: inside two minutes and eats half, the clock will stop
- 25:35Speaker 1: as normal. You will also be forced to do a
- 25:38Speaker 1: trick play inside of two minutes and eats half, So
- 25:41Speaker 1: whether it's a reverse, a halfback pass. You must do
- 25:45Speaker 1: a trick play, and no more than three running plays
- 25:48Speaker 1: inside of two minutes, and also within the two minutes
- 25:51Speaker 1: of each half. There's no offensive defensive pass interference. I'm
- 25:55Speaker 1: tired of this pillow fighting. I don't know which one
- 25:58Speaker 1: of those we would say is the league's most surprising change,
- 26:03Speaker 1: but I think all of those are so wonderfully creative
- 26:08Speaker 1: and inside and brilliant. Simon, you have a mountain to climb.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Tommy's out. It's either Morton or you at this point. Chad,
- 26:17Speaker 1: you're such a kiss. Ask more and that was awful idea.
- 26:20Speaker 1: The first one about cutting down the games, Dude, I
- 26:23Speaker 1: have no most of us have no lives. I want
- 26:26Speaker 1: five hour football games, let alone three hour football games.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Give me more. I want more. I don't want anything shorter.
- 26:32Speaker 1: I like the other ideas, though the past interferience ons
- 26:35Speaker 1: pretty wild. Um, I can't beat that time he kind
- 26:38Speaker 1: of took everything. I think you threw about fifty ideas.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Time he kind of fidget holded me because my big
- 26:43Speaker 1: thing was I'm with him. European League that they like
- 26:47Speaker 1: a team in Mexico, Canada. These things make sense to
- 26:50Speaker 1: keep going international with football so to me, that's gonna
- 26:52Speaker 1: be one of the biggest changes. Definitely will be international.
- 26:55Speaker 1: My second thing I think to be different league is
- 26:57Speaker 1: we kind of saw the Wildcat with a QB kind
- 26:59Speaker 1: of change things up was a running back with a quarterback.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I think we're gonna see a change of not a
- 27:04Speaker 1: Q QB system, but a wide receiver that can also
- 27:06Speaker 1: be like a quarterback, like Randall l or Hines Ward.
- 27:09Speaker 1: These guys that could pass the ball and be wide receiver.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I could see more of that in the future of
- 27:14Speaker 1: just different looks and offenses. We can have two guys
- 27:16Speaker 1: in the field that can pass the ball. Yeah. I
- 27:18Speaker 1: didn't want Morton to win this round. His answer was outstanding. Simon,
- 27:23Speaker 1: here's what our life goal should be. And then what's
- 27:28Speaker 1: that town that your family is from in England, Northern England, Birmingham, Burnley.
- 27:32Speaker 1: We should try to be the owners of the NFL
- 27:36Speaker 1: franchise in Burnley. That probably costs about fifty dollars Americans,
- 27:40Speaker 1: So we can do that tomorrow. If you like, Burnley
- 27:42Speaker 1: is not not a nice place, why don't we just
- 27:44Speaker 1: give him some crypto They love it. Let's do it,
- 27:48Speaker 1: all right, Morton Anderson, you won that round. I think answer.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Had I had one more change, I think would be fantastic.
- 27:55Speaker 1: If I may, I know I've wanted the round. It's
- 27:57Speaker 1: just a bonus, a little land yapp little extra, as
- 28:01Speaker 1: we like to say in Lucian do it leather helmets.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Take the helmets off. Everybody's pitching about concussions and all
- 28:07Speaker 1: this stuff. We don't have the same issue in rugby
- 28:10Speaker 1: water polo shocker that the kicker is the one asking
- 28:14Speaker 1: for leather helmets. Here's the score. Tommy has to, Morten
- 28:18Speaker 1: has four, Simon has two. Part three Just kicking it.
- 28:23Speaker 1: On this show, we talk a lot about the NFL,
- 28:26Speaker 1: but we devote an awful lot of our time on
- 28:29Speaker 1: quarterbacks and other offensive positions. Will occasionally talk about defenses
- 28:34Speaker 1: and even coaches. We rarely engage in any hot talk
- 28:38Speaker 1: about the often overlooked positions of kickers and punters. But
- 28:42Speaker 1: now that is true except for when we talk about
- 28:45Speaker 1: the Bears kicking troubles. But now that NFL kicking legend
- 28:49Speaker 1: Morton Anderson is here, it's as good as time as
- 28:52Speaker 1: any to test you're kicking i Q. Here we go, Tommy,
- 28:56Speaker 1: You're up first. A changing of the guard took place
- 29:00Speaker 1: back in two thousand four when the NFL banned any
- 29:03Speaker 1: player from sporting the distinctive one bar face mask, but
- 29:06Speaker 1: this did not apply to punter Scott Player, who was
- 29:10Speaker 1: the last player to rock the single bar mask. Scott
- 29:14Speaker 1: Player enjoyed a long career after his college days with
- 29:17Speaker 1: the Florida State Seminoles. His last college QB was this
- 29:22Speaker 1: Heisman Trophy winner would go on to a successful career
- 29:26Speaker 1: and was the starting point guard for the New York
- 29:29Speaker 1: Knicks in the NBA Finals. UH blanket on the first
- 29:34Speaker 1: Name Award, Charlie Ward, we will give you the credit, Simon.
- 29:40Speaker 1: The record for the longest field goal in NFL history
- 29:42Speaker 1: is sixty four yards, which was set by Matt Prator
- 29:45Speaker 1: in December of two thousand thirteen. Despite being outdoors in
- 29:49Speaker 1: eighteen degree weather, Prator's kick sailed through the uprights to
- 29:53Speaker 1: the delight of fans gathered in this stadium mile high
- 30:00Speaker 1: and now for the all time art mild high is correct. Morton.
- 30:15Speaker 1: A dropkick field goal attempt is one of the rarest
- 30:18Speaker 1: sites in football. No NFL team even attempted one for
- 30:22Speaker 1: eighty five years until a dropkick extra point was attempted
- 30:25Speaker 1: and made by this beloved scrambling quarterback. I mean dog,
- 30:34Speaker 1: I know, dog Flutie. I taught him to drop kick
- 30:37Speaker 1: for God's sakes. No, I didn't come on, but he
- 30:41Speaker 1: he told me way before he did that that he
- 30:44Speaker 1: was going to do it. He didn't tell me when,
- 30:46Speaker 1: but he said he was gonna do it if he
- 30:48Speaker 1: got a chance to do it in the game. Very
- 30:50Speaker 1: nicely done. Part three prompt, If you can make one
- 30:54Speaker 1: change to NFL kicking rules to make the league more fun,
- 30:59Speaker 1: what would it be? And Morton, you cannot say four
- 31:03Speaker 1: points for field over sixty yards? Tommy, you are up first. Well, Chad,
- 31:10Speaker 1: I gotta be honest with you. Morton's answer to the
- 31:13Speaker 1: second prompt kind of mixed in with my answer for
- 31:17Speaker 1: this third prompt. I think that we should do a
- 31:19Speaker 1: tiered system for points based on where the kick comes from.
- 31:25Speaker 1: So twenty yards are less, I think should be worth one,
- 31:28Speaker 1: between twenty one and forty five should be worth three,
- 31:31Speaker 1: forty six and sixty should be worth four, and sixty
- 31:34Speaker 1: plus should be worth six, because I mean, if you
- 31:38Speaker 1: make a sixty plus yard field goal, I think that's
- 31:41Speaker 1: just as hard as scoring a touchdown. How about this
- 31:44Speaker 1: what if you miss anything inside thirty yards, a point
- 31:47Speaker 1: is taken away from I thought about that. I didn't
- 31:49Speaker 1: want to get too crazy, but I thought about it.
- 31:51Speaker 1: So that's not a part of my official answer. But
- 31:53Speaker 1: I like it. I do like a tiered kicking uh
- 31:57Speaker 1: scoring rule. That's a really good idea, Morton, can you topic?
- 32:01Speaker 1: I want the onside kickback. It's a it's a six
- 32:05Speaker 1: percent proposition right now. It used to be almost a proposition.
- 32:12Speaker 1: They took it away. They said you can't have a
- 32:14Speaker 1: running start, you can't overload to the side. I created
- 32:18Speaker 1: this high it's called the Anderson where the ball bounces
- 32:22Speaker 1: really high. It goes twelve yards right on the numbers.
- 32:25Speaker 1: We used to overload, we'd blow up that front line.
- 32:28Speaker 1: We did that in the preseason game. I think we
- 32:31Speaker 1: got our kicks back. So I'm bringing the onside kickback.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I'm overloading, I'm running start. Let's create some excitement. I
- 32:41Speaker 1: don't like it. It's not original enough. But here's the challenge.
- 32:46Speaker 1: You have an actual on site kick named after you,
- 32:52Speaker 1: and so it's hard not to give you a lot
- 32:54Speaker 1: of credit for that. Even though I feel like Tommy's
- 32:58Speaker 1: answer is a little bit better, right, now, which means, Simon,
- 33:02Speaker 1: if you don't come up with a great answer, I'm
- 33:05Speaker 1: gonna have a really hard decision to make more In
- 33:07Speaker 1: just he just blew us all out, saying he's got
- 33:09Speaker 1: his own onside kick named after him. That right kind
- 33:13Speaker 1: of a flex. That was definitely a flex. I love it.
- 33:15Speaker 1: It's almost like putting your Hall of Fame bust behind
- 33:18Speaker 1: you in your pid replicate the original of in Canton
- 33:22Speaker 1: at last. I digress, Sorry, I thought of something right
- 33:26Speaker 1: up your alley chat the double doink. We should start
- 33:29Speaker 1: rewarding kickers that hit post and that like enough over
- 33:34Speaker 1: Divan wins. That is, why don't we just put the
- 33:40Speaker 1: goal post one bar and then you gotta hit the
- 33:43Speaker 1: upright to get Of course, the Bears fan wants double
- 33:47Speaker 1: doinks rewarding with points because Parky that's that's what he
- 33:50Speaker 1: aimed for. Simon knows his audience and in this case,
- 33:55Speaker 1: in this case serious pandering going on. You saw the
- 33:58Speaker 1: Bears thing right behind them. This was one fixed. It
- 34:06Speaker 1: was a no brainer. Here is the score as we
- 34:08Speaker 1: go into the grand finale, or as I like to
- 34:12Speaker 1: call it, the Anderson Tommy, you have three points. Morton
- 34:16Speaker 1: you have five points. Simon, you have four points. The
- 34:21Speaker 1: topic is infamous Olympians. Before we get to the question,
- 34:26Speaker 1: please close your eyes and now hold up your fingers
- 34:29Speaker 1: with your wager amount. You can wager up to the
- 34:32Speaker 1: total amount of points you have right now or less.
- 34:35Speaker 1: So Tommy three, Morton five, Simon four. All right, here
- 34:38Speaker 1: we go. One of the most famous kicks in NFL
- 34:41Speaker 1: history came on November eight On that day, the Saints,
- 34:47Speaker 1: Tom Dempsey made the longest field goal in NFL history
- 34:51Speaker 1: with a sixty three yard game winner against the Lions,
- 34:55Speaker 1: a record that would stand for forty three years. Just
- 34:58Speaker 1: four days after that famous kick, on November twelfth, seventy
- 35:04Speaker 1: one of the most infamous athletes in American history was
- 35:09Speaker 1: born two thousand miles away in Portland, Oregon. This two
- 35:13Speaker 1: time US champion and two time Olympian entered the American
- 35:17Speaker 1: spotlight in the early nineteen nineties, But in January of
- 35:22Speaker 1: this athletes potential involvement in the brutal assault of a
- 35:28Speaker 1: rival created a worldwide scandal that made the covers of
- 35:31Speaker 1: Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, and Time magazine. Please name this athlete,
- 35:37Speaker 1: who remains the most well known Olympic bronze medalist in
- 35:42Speaker 1: American history. Such a question. That was a tortured winding tour.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Let's see, Morton, you're answering first, you wagered one point,
- 36:13Speaker 1: you have five points. What is the answer? I have
- 36:16Speaker 1: no clue. I'll guess the Vanda hold the field. I
- 36:18Speaker 1: don't know. Tanya Harding, Nancy Carry. I can't believe I
- 36:24Speaker 1: got that. That was a shy answer. Why why? That's right?
- 36:33Speaker 1: All right? You are down to four? Morton Anderson, Tommy,
- 36:37Speaker 1: you wagered three and you currently have three. What is
- 36:43Speaker 1: your answer? Said to Matt, and I'm gonna stick with it. Harding,
- 36:48Speaker 1: Kanya Harding is the right answer? You have now have six? Simon,
- 36:52Speaker 1: you risked for you had four? The king of the
- 36:56Speaker 1: all in? What is your answer? I'm embarrassed? I literally
- 37:01Speaker 1: just what's it called? Tania? Or movie? Yeah? I just
- 37:04Speaker 1: watched it on an airplane and I couldn't remember her name.
- 37:07Speaker 1: All I knew was that she was a figure skater.
- 37:08Speaker 1: That's all I texted Matt. I said figure skater. So
- 37:12Speaker 1: I lost hey, And in my defense, I lost interest
- 37:15Speaker 1: halfway through the question and didn't listened to the second half. Well, listen,
- 37:19Speaker 1: if you want to plan under pressure. You've got to
- 37:21Speaker 1: learn to concentrate more. Tommy, I'm only one point two
- 37:24Speaker 1: seconds and when my stuff is open, Morn's my kind
- 37:28Speaker 1: of guy. I mean that ship. That question was a minute.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Well guess what. Guess what your producer who in the
- 37:35Speaker 1: beginning got the first question wrong and didn't even know
- 37:39Speaker 1: how to answer the first prompt and by the end
- 37:42Speaker 1: of the game become kid Let champion. That's why I
- 37:48Speaker 1: got him. He's the best. Different man, built different built differently, differently.
- 37:53Speaker 1: That's what I meant to say. Beautiful. Congratulations Tommy, Congratulations
- 37:59Speaker 1: more Anderson on diminishing your wonderful career by appearing on
