450: Emily Abbate - I Love This Chapter of My Life · C Tolle Run

• Carrie: Emily, you're back. Yeah, it's been since twenty twenty two. C Tolle Run: Hey everyone, I'm Olympian Carrie Tullifson, and welcome to the C Tally Run Podcast. This week on the show, I'm super excited to welcome back a friend and someone who truly seems to be doing it all her own way. That's Emily Abadi. Emily is the host of Hurdle Podcast. She's a speaker, a storyteller, a world traveler, a fashion lover, and someone who continues to make movement a priority no matter where life takes her. Emily: We back. ⁓ my god. Carrie: I know, like we can't have that happen ever again. Like everybody needs to see Tally run, hear what Emily's doing. So how are you? Yeah. Emily: I'm good, my girl. I'm good. I'm sat in New York for a few weeks, enjoying summer, checking things off of my bucket list. It's been absolutely lovely. Carrie: ⁓ Like what's on the bucket list lately? What are you doing? C Tolle Run: I also wanted to talk to Emily about what she's doing next. She's leaning into women's sports. She's growing hurdle. She's navigating big personal decisions, including recently freezing her eggs and continuing to build a career in life with so much intention. I feel like Emily is in one of those really exciting chapters where she has built something incredible. But what Emily: ⁓ man, I just like my favorite things to do in New York during the summertime. So I want to get to Rockaway Beach. I want to go to Rippers. I want to sit on the West Side Highway. I want to run on the West Side Highway. I want to be outside as much as possible. Just trying to soak in the good vibes. And as you know, it's been a fun time to be living in New York. So there are memes going around of people. Carrie: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Right. C Tolle Run: She always does is dream bigger and she's always getting after it. So today we are taking a little bit of a leap. We're talking vision, growth, women in sports, making space for things that matter, and what it really looks like to go all in on yourself. So let's get after it. Carrie: Yeah. Emily: like taking air and being like this is twenty twenty six New York summer air. I'm gonna put it in a ziploc, keep it forever. So I'm just soaking it in. Yeah. Carrie: Yeah. ⁓ my gosh. Yeah, that is so cool. We are rooting for you guys for the you know, over the basketball season. I went to Villanova, so a lot of the lot of Villanova wearing gear here around the house. So it was an exciting year for you all. Emily: It was. It was. I I went to Yukon, so you and I have like a little bit of a thing. We won't even go there. We won't even go there. C Tolle Run: Thanks so much for joining me today on CTLERun. My guest was Emily Abadi. You can find her on social media at Emily Abadi or at Hurdle Podcast. That's Hurdle Podcast. Also, just a big shout out to Tailwind Nutrition. They are supporting. Carrie: Uh-huh, for sure. Let's not even go there. So my gosh, there's been so much new going on. I would say, I mean, I watch all of your, you know, Instagram and everything and personally you just are crushing it, but also professionally you're doing so many really cool things, aren't you? Emily: Yeah, I'm feeling really excited and very much in alignment right now. I have ⁓ my hands in a lot of different things. There are a lot of pots in the stove and I'm doing my best at all times not to let things boil over. You know, you do truly the best you can. ⁓ but I'm having a lot of fun and I think that's the most important part. C Tolle Run: Us for the next few months, and we want to recommend head on over to tailwindnutrition.com and use the code TOLLY20, that's T-O-L-L-E 20, for 20% off your order. If you're a fan of the pod, we'd love your support. Please take a moment to leave us a rating and a review. All you have to do is visit Ctoliron.com/slash review and leave us a quick little note or a five-star rating. Carrie: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, okay, so we're gonna like break everything down because if anyone wants to hear kind of the background to who you are, they can go and listen to that first episode, which is, you know, a few years ago already, but I mean that's really kinda gives the story of who you are. So head on over to ctaliron dot com and and check that out. But I wanna like get up to speed and I wanna get into all these things that you're doing. So tell me right now, like we're just gonna start. What is Emily Abadi like doing? What are you like going in on right now? C Tolle Run: You can also find us on YouTube, Facebook, X, and Instagram at Ctellibron or at Carrie Telfson, or you can visit us anytime at ctelebron.com. Thank you so much for joining us today. And don't forget to get after it. Emily: Yeah, so there are a couple things that I'm all in on right now. Obviously, Hurdle is the full-time thing. So I have a show. It's called Hurdle. Hopefully you listen to it. You can check it out wherever you get this podcast. And Hurdle is a show where I chat with everyone from elite athletes to industry experts and CEOs about their highest, highs, and toughest moments and everything in between. And this season, which will excite many of you, I have gone all in on runs. Carrie: Yeah. So cool. Emily: What that means is talking to your favorite elites, your favorite professionals, your favorite women that are talking about run, and we are going all in. So it's been really fun over there with Hurdle. Obviously, I myself am a huge runner, so I have a vested interest in the sport. And what I found after joining iHeart Women's Sports Network last year was that. I was in so many outstanding rooms, surrounded by so many outstanding women. And more often than not, when we were talking about professional sports, people will were neglecting to talk about women's running. And so I know, because I'm on the same side of the internet as you, that there are so many outstanding women that are covering the sport. But in the bigger picture, there's so much more that we can do. And so I said, why not dip my toe in here, see how it goes for season 21, which is wild, and then What kind of moving group from there? So hurdles project number one. project number two, I'm having ⁓ the time of my life producing a special limited series alongside my good friend Coach Chris Bennett from Nike. He is handing over the microphone on his podcast, Coach Bennett's podcast, to women from all over the globe celebrating the brand's After Dark tour. And so Me and B are having some really fun conversations with women everywhere from Manila to Mumbai, London, California, all over the place. And ⁓ I was just on his show kicking that off. And we'll be doing a few live tour stops for that, a little bit ⁓ close to the vest for now on where those will be. And then ⁓ other than that, just the hosting. So I do a ton of event hosting, ⁓ partnering with brands that I love to help. Carrie: Fine. Yeah. Emily: them, ⁓ highlight athletes that they work with, experts that they work with, ⁓ celebrate big product launches. So always fun to get behind the mic, connect with community and show up. IRL. Carrie: I love it. I mean you have so many different things. You wear a lot of different hats. So it can be I mean, I'm sure like my brain, my I don't wear lots of different hats per se, but I have a lot of different people and names and stats in my head. So when you have a lot of different things going on like that, it can be a little draining at times. How do you how do you stay like with it and not lose your mind? Emily: Well, you out of anyone can really understand and and know where I'm coming from with this. And also kudos to you because the stats part of it, I, you know, will soak in some info so that I can have an intellectual conversation with someone that's coming on the show. But to know that there's an editor that could touch it is so different than you going live on air. So I'm in awe of the things that you do. Carrie: Ha ha ha. ⁓ Emily: Gary, but with that said, I mean, the way that I really handle what can be overwhelm or sometimes even burnout is truly just putting my own oxygen mask on first. I know that can sound a little woo-woo and a little corny, but it's small things like taking time for myself in the morning. I am a single woman living in Brooklyn, New York. And so that means I'm not getting up and chasing after kids every day. I have the opportunity right now. Carrie: Yeah. Emily: To do some things for myself. So that's moving my body first thing in the day, getting outside, getting fresh air, and just taking time to reflect and really take a breath before I jump into anything. And by doing that, I'm not only a better person for the people that I interact with, but I'm also just a better person for myself. And that way I can show up and really be where my feet are, even if my feet are hopping from one pot to the next pot on the stove. Carrie: Can I just say that I so appreciate you saying ⁓ that you know you you are a single woman and without children and that you can maybe make your day schedule a little bit differently. Like I think that because I am a mother of three and I do have a partner that I have to help take care of in life, I do really appreciate the fact that you acknowledge that. but I also acknowledge the fact that you are taking care of you and also enjoying maybe that time of not having to take care of so many things. And and really going in. Like I am inspired every day that I see you get to the gym and you get out and get your run in. And I love that. I do know that you have taken life measures to become hopefully a mom if that's what you want in in life. But I just really appreciate the fact that you you appreciate that sometimes my time is a little bit scattered. Yours is too but I I thank you for that because different. Emily: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They're definitely, definitely two different sides of the coin. I have so many friends now that are well into their motherhood journeys. ⁓ some with ⁓ you know, many kids, some trying to have their first child. And I indulge in relish in the opportunity to be the cool auntie. But with that said, this is just the season of my life that I'm in right now. It doesn't mean that. Carrie: Yeah. Exactly. Emily: I think it's any better or worse. I truly try to enjoy it for everything that it offers me. And there are still going to be moments where I'm like, wow, I wonder what it would be like if I was in that season at this moment where I was catering to a family, a baby. I share a wall with a baby. Like I know what it's like to be woken up at 3 a.m. despite not having to go and directly take care of that baby. I reap the benefits of that. Carrie: Yeah. ⁓ well. ⁓ no. ⁓ my gosh. Yeah. ⁓ hi, Coco. Yeah. Emily: But with that said, it's okay. It's okay. I love her. Coco is a little angel on the other side of my wall. Carrie: And vice versa. There are days that I would not change it for the world, but I often think, ⁓ you know, maybe the grass is greener sometimes. So I think that we're all in it together. And that's what I appreciate so much with you. And and just and watching you go through life. It's really fun. I I really enjoy it. And be maybe because we know each other so well too. I'm like, I'm right there with you. What I love about what you did since in the spring, you really put it forward that you were going all in on women's sports, especially the run. And obviously you have Emily: Yeah. Carrie: been a huge fan of of running and in your own world and in others. But let's talk a little bit about why women in sport so important to both you and I. Like what is it about out about the sport for you? Emily: Yeah. I mean, we know categorically that not only are we seeing more visibility around women's sports, but we're also seeing a really heavy investment. There are fans everywhere, and we are learning that they have been here all along and they want more. They want more content. They want more opportunities to watch their favorite players. They want to engage with their favorite players and more and more brands that aren't. Endemic to any particular sport are getting into the mix. So you're seeing beauty becoming a huge supporting category of women in sports. You're seeing really cool collaborations and partnerships. And so to be a journalist in this space right now and to have this really awesome front row seat to watch the boom that is woman's sports, I feel so lucky that this is the career that I am in. Carrie: So cool. I mean and you're just so passionate about it. That's what's so fun. And that's what hurdles all about. I was just listening to Daz's last ⁓ interview with you. ⁓ hey, say it. Say your race. Say the name of it. Emily: ⁓ my God. Des I know. She's so funny. Des is like my buddy. And to be able to keep up with Des, not on a run, but at the bar, is truly one of my proudest accomplishments in life. Carrie: I could na never. I could maybe keep up with her a little better on the run then, but never in the bar. Emily: ⁓ man, I have been ⁓ have been next to her at on way too many ⁓ you know what? There's no such thing as too many. I've been next to her on many of a bar stool. I I feel so lucky to not only ⁓ know her, but to learn from her, especially in this chapter that she's in now, navigating business in her own way, representing herself. I'm just so inspired by her and what she's been able to build. And ⁓ I'm really excited to see where she goes next. Carrie: Yeah. I know. Yeah, exactly. I think what Des does really well, and this is actually I when I made my outline for our interview today, I had reinvention for you as my next kind of category, but that's exactly her. Like she reinvents herself. Obviously, she's under this big umbrella of being that runner, but she's always kind of like, here we go, what's next? She is very much a student of the sport, like and she she studies everything from gear to, you know, just different markets and things like that. Like even She's studying what they're doing in Formula One versus running. Like you can hear how she her brain works. And that's what's so interesting about her and others like her in our sport. Emily: Yeah. Well, how about her going to take that class at Harvard Business School? I'm like, yes. Carrie: Exactly. And she doesn't like Put it out there for everyone to hear. It naturally came up in conversation, but you know, she's just always challenging herself, which I think is cool. That's what I think you do. I mean, it seems like that. You that's how this whole journey started with you and and getting more healthy and and losing all of that weight, but also losing a lot of baggage outside of weight, if outside of pounds. You lost some things and reinvented yourself. Let's talk about how you see yourself reinventing yourself now going forward. Emily: Yeah. Love that. Yeah. Yeah, you know, what's been always so important to me outside of my own health journey has always been making sure that I was creating content that was safe and responsible. So, in the vein of does going to take this class at Harvard, for me, when I was in conventional media, my last in-house job over 10 years ago being the fitness editor itself, it was important to me. Carrie: That was over ten years ago. Emily: Isn't that wild? I left self at the end of 2016. I know, I know. It's wild. So I in that role garnered a lot of different certifications that helped me create responsible and safe content for our reader, which now I still have maintain and upkeep those certifications today. So that is being a certified trainer. Carrie: ⁓ my gosh. Okay. Emily: Being a certified run coach, having a level one precision nutrition certification, also being a certified professional coach, which you can liken to a life coach. And this isn't like I went to air quote school over a weekend and got some faux certification. I took nine months of intense study and hundreds of hours of, you know, interpersonal work. And modules and everything, an entire curriculum to get these certifications. And that's because I truly care about making sure that we're having really responsible and safe conversations, especially when it comes not only to how we move, but also the way that we speak to ourselves. When I got into having conversations with athletes and we really went to the mindset side of things, it became more important to me than ever that we were talking about it in a way that not only was responsible. But also with something that could be relatable, could be something that we could really unpack. And so in my journey of reinvention, in my journey of becoming my best self, all I can do is the best I can with what I have. And so I'm always searching for tools to do that, to level up, to continue to have these responsible and smart conversations because I want to be my best self. Carrie: I mean, right here. I'm just gonna do this. Because like Emily: Appreciate you. Carrie: It is it is really inspiring to hear that you do all of that. Like you aren't just one to, you know, you can speak really well. That's that's great, but you have the backing to go with that. So that's really awesome. I wanna ⁓ transition into a personal decision that you decided to share with the world. And we alluded to it a little bit earlier about freezing your eggs and maybe one day becoming a mommy. ⁓ you know, all of the things like you are really open with the world and through your your journey. It has not always been just this up and up. When you look at you, you're like, ⁓ she's successful. She does all these things, but there's still some things that you're striving for or at least putting yourself in position to do. So let's talk about why you decided to share this and why you decided to do it. Emily: Yeah, so I will start by saying that I was decided at one point that freezing my eggs was something I would never do. I was like, I truly believe that what is meant for me won't pass me by. If I meet someone and the timeline is right and we have a child, great. If they don't want children, I could be okay not being a mom. I still genuinely feel that way. Like I may not decide to have children at all, and that's okay. Carrie: Really? Okay. Emily: But I was at a friend's last summer and we were on her roof with her daughter, and I was just watching them play. And this isn't my first friend to have a child child. I have so many friends that are running around with little ones. But it was something about this night that I left her house and I'm walking home and I'm like, shoot, what if I want that? And it wasn't even, again, something that I know for sure, but it was just wanting to have. Carrie: Mm-hmm. Emily: The option. And for so long, a big part of me also saying that it wasn't something that I would seek to do was using the finances behind it as a crutch. And I was with a friend shortly after having these thoughts, leaving her home. And ⁓ my other friend said. Carrie: Mm. Emily: If it was about the money, you know that's a lie. And not to say that I just have, you know, $15,000 laying around. That certainly is not the case, but I have it in savings and it's something that I could plan for. And so I heard what she said. I had that experience, and I finally decided just to go in for an info session. I had been serendipitously approached by Spring Fertility to moderate an event with them over. Carrie: Yeah. Emily: New York City Marathon Week. And so after I moderated that event, they said, why don't you come in and just talk with a doctor and have a chat? And so that's what I did. And then I went home and had a number of calls with the finance department and started to figure everything out. And just to reiterate, none of this was complimentary. I paid for all of it out of pocket. And that is something that is quite challenging because Carrie: Yeah. Emily: I will say this: if you are on the fence about deciding whether or not you want to freeze your eggs, if your company has a fertility benefit, I it is something I wish so badly that I had. And I wonder if I had that benefit sooner, maybe I would have done this sooner. But with that said, that's just my word. Carrie: Mm. Hm. Emily: I went through it. ⁓ I wouldn't say it was the easiest thing ever, but it was on par with kind of what I expected. There were some emotional moments. I don't particularly love using ⁓ needles in my kitchen. That was a little overwhelming at times, but you know, we did ⁓ the whole shebang, went through the procedure, and now it's behind me, and I feel really happy that I did it. Yes, yeah, totally successful. ⁓ Carrie: Okay. Yeah. Sure. And it was successful. Everything went well. Emily: There are women that will go through a number of rounds to hopefully find the result that they're after. I was happy with the result and what we were able to achieve from one round. And so that is where I will stay. Carrie: I mean, it almost feels though like e regardless, like you said, if you end up using it or not, a little weight off your shoulder, knowing that you d I mean, I was forty-one when I started my menopause journey. And I am gonna turn fifty. ⁓ my gosh, I said that out loud on the podcast in January. And so it's been nine years and you know, I had Greer, our youngest, at thirty-nine. Emily: ⁓ my gosh! Carrie: So I I'm thankful that you're doing this. I'm thankful that you think of it because someone that went through menopause fairly early, it does as the big sister, I call myself the big sister for a lot of people, a lot of the runners and a lot of friends, because I feel like I am a little bit older, even if I act way younger. ⁓ Emily: Yeah. Ha ha. Carrie: I'm thankful that you're taking that journey because life is short. Life is long at the same time where we might get to a certain point where we get to, you know, fifty and be like, ⁓ I kinda wish I would have done something. And you've taken those steps. So bravo, lady. And I'm thankful that it went through it. That you went through it. ⁓ how old are you, by the way? Yeah. Yeah. Emily: Thank you. Thank you. I'm thirty I'm like, how old am I? I'm thirty eight. I turned thirty eight in June. Carrie: Yeah, so you have lots of time, but you don't know what your body's gonna do. That's my point. I didn't know at forty one I was gonna start my menopause journey. So I'm thankful you took the measures early. Yeah. To Emily: Yeah. Yeah, it's wild. It's wild. And honestly, I feel so more often than not, I feel fortunate to be in the position that I'm in, that I have this community of women that ⁓ looks to one another for support and that I can be a resource on something like this. It's like so many different moments in my health journey. Carrie: Yeah. For sure. Emily: I was looking for someone that I could relate to. I was looking for someone that I could learn from. And so this is a chapter of the journey, not unlike the others, where now I'm happy that I can be that resource for others. Carrie: Yeah. Yeah, you definitely have a great community around you. And it's interesting too, I feel like, because you're around a lot of the elite athletes, like even just to be able to chat in that kind of conversation. For me, one of the women that ⁓ kind of told me like I should be thinking about having children, and she Janice Clecker, you know Joe Clecker. Janice Clecker is his mom. She's an Olympian, she was my dentist. She'd wear her Olympic earrings every time I went in to get my teeth cleaned or whatever. So fun. And she Emily: Yeah. Are you new? Carrie: She has so many kids. They have six kids. And but she said to me one year, I think I was like 32 and still running and kind of toying with the idea of having children. She did say, Kiri, you need to think about this. This is something that as an athlete, you can't just keep putting off. And as a woman, as a, you know, businesswoman, whatever, like that, there is a point in our lives where we have to think about it. And so I'm really proud of you for thinking about it, taking the steps you wanted, whether you use it or not. Emily: Yeah. Yeah. Carrie: not ⁓ that is something that you can now share with elite athletes as well people that use their bodies for a living like we forget we have this short period to be elite but we also have this short period to be mothers if we want to so we have to yes ⁓ Jess and it didn't go easy for her Emily: Yeah. Shout out to Jess McLean. She was one of the first people that checked in on me after my procedure. She was so open with her journey going through the same thing not yeah, the the same thing not long before me. So I'm I'm grateful for her. And it's been ⁓ it's been really cool to be able to have some conversations about this with some of the women that I intermingle with throughout the podcasting space. Carrie: Yeah. Yeah. I love it. I love that you have that relationship with your peeps. ⁓ okay, I want to talk about your running. So I could see in the background that you have your your Chicago. What's the ⁓ other one? Is that Berlin? ⁓ New York. Yeah, London. I mean there's somewhere in this room. Yes. It's amazing. behind me. Have you done Sydney? Emily: There's a lot. There's there's a New York year. There's a London over there. There's one for all of the majors somewhere in this room. but only some of them are behind me. I'm doing it in August. I am. I am. I'm so excited. I've never been to Australia and I'll be spending some good time there. So I'm looking forward to it. Carrie: You're doing it this August? ⁓ my gosh, how did I forg how did I miss that or forget it? I think I just forgot. Okay. I've always wanted to go there. I never have I've never gone. So I'm gonna get all the tea from you. ⁓ Emily: All right, if you are listening to this right now and you have Sydney or Melbourne Rex, I know I said that very American, but please get in my DMs. Carrie: Yeah. Okay. Okay. Yep. Everybody. Get in her DMs. ⁓ I saw today you had a big workout. How's it going? Emily: ⁓ man, ⁓ so funny that I'm like more than halfway through this training cycle and that's the first Hill workout that I've done. There was one or two other ones on my schedule at some point, but I am very much of the mindset that I need to constantly meet myself with where I'm at. And the training plan, although it is in an app on my phone, it is. Carrie: Cause Sydney is hilly. Sure. Emily: Quote unquote written in pencil. So the other times that I've had hill workouts that I was supposed to do, I was either short on sleep or in a different time zone or had a work thing going on. And so while I am always going to get the movement in, hands down, no contest, sometimes I'm being smart and I'm modifying. So today was the first hill workout that I did not modify. And I will be honest, I did not want to do it, but I did some things to help myself get out there anyway. The first thing is I set my alarm, although I was up before it. The second thing was I tapped in a good friend of mine to do it with me. So I had an accountability buddy to meet and make sure that we put in that work. And then the last thing always is just. Carrie: Yeah. ⁓ ⁓ good. Okay. Mm-hmm. Emily: Being able to even just check off the workout, like in the app, when I see that, it's like such a personal sense of gratification. So it keeps me honest, knowing that it's gonna be like, hey, girl, why didn't you do this thing? I'm I'm here to do the thing. So the training overall, it's going really well. My longest run so far has been 17. I've got 19 on deck this weekend. And it's so funny, right? Every time I train for a marathon, I was saying this to a good friend just a few days ago. Carrie: Mm. Yeah. Yes. Okay. Emily: Two weeks ago I had a 15-mile run. I did that when I was traveling to Portland for work. Last weekend I had a 17-mile run. I got to do it here in New York. And when you do the 17-mile run, the 15-mile point like seemed very doable. When you do the 15-mile run, you're like, ⁓ I'm so tired by the end of this. And every time, 15 marathons in, I am still humbled and astounded at what the body does when you train appropriately. Yeah. Carrie: Mm-hmm. Yes. Mm-hmm. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, you know the ebbs and flows for sure. And it Emily: And I'm yeah, I'm just not someone I am always gonna put in the work. I'm never someone that's just gonna be like, you know what I want to do two weeks from now, I'm gonna run a sporadic marathon. I respect the marathon too much. I respect my body. I have gone through so many different injury cycles. ⁓ I would say the most gnarly, annoying one was probably plantar fasciitis, like three, four years ago. And so I have so much gratitude for where I am now, and I am not gonna give it up. And yeah. Carrie: Yeah. Mm. Emily: Training is going well. No sporadic marathons for me. Carrie: I love that. Tell me who who writes your plans. Emily: who writes my plans? Well, it is truly Rana right now. I am not paid. I'm not paid by Rana. I just love their programming. I also think, Carrie, that I, like I mentioned before, I'm a certified run coach through UESCA. So I ⁓ have Carrie: Mm. Okay, okay. Do you like it? Emily: The foundational knowledge, and I've been doing this for long enough that I know how to interpret an AI generated plan. I know when to modify an AI generated plan. And I am so friendly with so many other skilled and qualified individuals that if I need some insight, if I want to bounce an idea off of one of my good friends, I will. So for me, Rana has been really great and it's giving me workouts that I've never done before, which I think is really fun being, you know. Carrie: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Emily: Gosh, almost two decades into running now for me. ⁓ never a serious or like elite athlete of any kind, never competed seriously, but just running for fun and still having fun with it. And to say that, I feel really lucky. Carrie: Yeah, and this podcast is brought to you by Run Dot, which is an AI generated ⁓ you know, app as well. So it's interesting. I I am not really training for much right now, so I'm just like training for life. But it's just interesting to hear that people are really getting into this AI stuff and and also like you said, able to tweak things as it comes if they are one that has the background to do that. So that's really cool. Emily: Yeah, I think that's also just like so important, regardless of what platform you're using. Just knowing that again, it's a lot different than working with a real person all of the time, one-on-one, being able to talk about the niggles and the small things. So just know that you have to be your own advocate and you have to be honest with yourself if you're gonna go this route. And that's okay. Just gotta be honest with yourself. Carrie: Right. You have to be smart. Mm. When you are training now for these marathons, has your relationship with running changed since you first started this this whole journey into endurance sports? Emily: I mean, ⁓ yeah. When I first started running, I thought that I could never be good at it. And when I first started running, I used it as a weight loss tool. I didn't really enjoy the process, but I enjoyed how I felt when I was done with it. And now I truly enjoy the process. I know that this journey 15 marathons in, like the journey is the destination. The training is the reason why I do it. The training brings Carrie: Right. Yeah. Claw. So right. Emily: This really outstanding diligence and satisfaction to my life. And it makes me feel like me. It makes me feel like my best self. So, you know, like I mentioned earlier, I've had so many frustrating injury cycles. And that is why I am so beyond appreciative right now to get to do the training, to get to continue to push my own boundaries. What a privilege. I was watching Sinclair Johnson's YouTube this morning, and she was saying, Carrie: Hm. Yeah. Emily: What a privilege it is almost to feel like you get to die every day. And I was like, I don't know if that's what I'm pushing to that edge myself, but I see where you were going with that. Carrie: ⁓ yeah, it's like yeah. Yeah. No, I kind of miss that part of training like I used to. But I look as you're telling me this, I just looked over your shoulder and your your motto there says, Remember when you wanted what you have now. I mean, you have been on a big journey and it's really, really fun to see how well you're doing. ⁓ the strength work, not only the run, but the strength work work. Emily, you get after it in the gym. Emily: Yeah. We train in. Urrha. Carrie: I know and your arms, your shoulders. I mean, I gotta get it going. I just gotta get it going. You love it? Emily: I am. I'm in the gym. I ⁓ so for that I use a completely different app. It's called Future and it pairs you one-on-one with a real ⁓ person, a real trainer, and he writes my custom programming. So right now I'm strength training three days a week and running four days a week. I know this isn't like what it is. It feels like my Sunday strength day is kind of like a maintenance day. Carrie: Okay. Okay. Emily: And a recovery day for me, and I'll treat it that way outside of the work that I might be doing on the gym floor. So using things like the sauna, and there's like a whirlpool at one of the gyms that I go to, and just relaxing and taking Sunday like that for myself. But yeah, I gosh, over a decade ago was really into CrossFit. I had a phase, and then like many CrossFitters also got injured and stepped away from that type of training for some time. And so Carrie: Nice. Sure. Emily: I feel really happy to be back working Olympic lifts and lifting barbells again. I just feel like it's really clicked and been this missing piece to my training. And I'm feeling really strong and and really happy. And I'm seeing it pay off within my running as well. I really now am at this point, like I said, with four days a week running and three days a week lifting. ⁓ before there were weeks that are or there were days that I would double up. And so Carrie: Mm-hmm. Emily: Although I understand that me saying I'm doing some sort of training every day that could be perceived some kind of way, for me it feels good in my body and I'm listening. And I think that at this point I know it well enough. And so yeah, it feels it feels really good. And I'm really grateful for it. Carrie: That's amazing. Well, and it does seem like you are very adamant about taking good care of yourself outside of those workouts. So, you know, you're you're getting the body work done, you're doing the things you need to. ⁓ you mentioned that you've never been to Australia. You travel all over though. I just got back from Paris, like you talked about Portland, like you're here in the States, but you're also doing international travel. So, I mean, what is that like? Do you ever get tired of packing your bag? Emily: ⁓ totally. I don't get tired of packing my bag. I'm always learning new hacks to pack it better. I love this chapter of my life and I recognize that it is not one that will last forever. I feel so fortunate to get to travel. Carrie: Okay. Good. Emily: so many places and do what I love to think that in the last handful of years I have been to Tokyo and Budapest. I'm going to Sydney. I've been to Paris. I mean in 20 excuse me in 2024, I think I was in Paris four different times, including for the Olympics. I feel so grateful for all of that. So it doesn't get tired and it also will be Carrie: Hm. Emily: Your teacher, to say the very least. Carrie: ⁓ huh. For sure. So what is on the docket besides running Sydney? Like where's n where will you be next? Emily: Yeah. So I mean, I'm I'll be in Sydney at the end of August. ⁓ I also have another trip out west to Portland. I'm also running Siwees in Vancouver at the beginning of August before I head across the world. ⁓ a good friend of mine, ⁓ Ashley Mateo, who is the editor-in-chief of Runner, ⁓ and I are gonna go to Fiji after Sydney. I'm like, when is this? Carrie: ⁓ beautiful. Emily: ⁓ it's only like a three and a half or four hour flight. So really looking forward to going to Fiji. Have never been and only just yesterday realized that that's where they filmed Love Island. So I'm just trying to be in the villa. The villa? I'm trying to be in the villa. ⁓ but yes, Sydney, Melbourne, ⁓ and some some other exciting places that are still close to the vest right now. Carrie: Hey I mean Okay. PG That is so fun. And yes, I can't we have to just like watch everything because there's some s you know secretive stuff being planned, I can tell. And so then we have to find out about your fashion because you are so good at it. Girl, like can you please just do my newly for me? Because I don't even know how to do that. Emily: Yeah. Secreted stuff going on. You're so sweet to me. I I will say I dabble in both. Like I'll dabble right now. My newly is on pause and I'm in the rent the runway phase because okay, because I have a couple of weddings. And so I generally feel like rent the runway is better for formal and then newly the daily staples are so on point. So I know it's tiring. So I'm gonna share you my hack. I'm gonna share you my hack. You heard it here first, okay. Carrie: That's what I'm thinking about doing. Mm. Okay. There's just so many of ⁓ and I can't I can't think. How do you do it? Do you have a process? Okay. Yes. Emily: When you go to the newly app and you look at Browse All, you have to click filter by newest first. And when you do that, you get all of the new stuff. And more often than not, when it arrives, it will arrive with tags on. That is my hack. That is my hack. I love, I love getting like brand new stuff from newly. Yeah. And sometimes that happens for me with Rent the Runway too. Carrie: Yeah. Tags, yes, we like that. Yeah. That's ki I have that hack too. Me too. Okay. ⁓ good. Okay, so if you don't know what newly or rent the run runway is, it is a rental service. So you get like I get six items. I don't know how many you get, but I get six items a month. And now my daughter can we can share. So basically she just takes it all. But it is it's nice, especially when you have a lot of, you know, work meetings or travel, those kind of things. So but you always Emily: Yeah. ⁓ that's so fun. Yeah. I think it's really fun also to be able to dig into services like this to sort out your personal style. For instance, right now the ⁓ like gaucho style pant is kind of back in style, like the one that hits mid calf, like a midi length. And I wasn't sure if that was something that I would like. So I could rent it, try it on, see if I like it. And I do like it. So Carrie: Mm-hmm. Yeah. ⁓ huh. Yeah. Emily: The other great thing about a lot of these is that you then get a discount if you choose to keep the item and it's much cheaper than if you just bought the item outright. So that's been really fun for me too. Carrie: Yeah, you can buy it. So good. ⁓ speaking. We're just going through some things. Speaking. Do you have an agent? Emily: I do not have an agent. If you're listening to this and you want to be my agent, I'm open to talking to you. I've never had, I've never had a speaking agent. I've never had any sort of agent or management. I've done it all myself since going out on my own almost 10 years ago, which is kind of wild. And when I tell other people about, they're like, How does that work? And I'm like, Well, it does. And I feel like over the last Carrie: You and I have talked to this Yeah, you and I kinda talk about this whenever we see each other. Like, how do we do it all? Like you're getting asked to do a lot of things. You're so good at it. Emily: Decade, I've essentially gotten my master's in sports business, right? I've had this opportunity to work hand in hand with some of the most brilliant, smart people that are at the forefront of so many of the brands that we all see and interact with every day. And I feel so grateful for that. How cool is it that I get to sit next to CMOs and executives who have worked their way up the ladder to get to where they are and then learn from them. That is just Carrie: Yeah. Emily: Beyond cool to me, but no, no agent. I am open to it. ⁓ so again, my DMs are open. Carrie: Okay, okay. Well you are crushing it, lady, and I mean you do it all. ⁓ let's talk about what you wanna do though in the next five years. Because I when I had you on a while ago, it was build hurdle. Like hurdle is built. Like you got it. So where where are you gonna go with it? Emily: I mean, thank you. And the the limit. I'm ⁓ the the hurdle building is still in progress. ⁓ video is happening this quarter. It's been something that I have been working on. And so I'm really excited to formally get YouTube going. ⁓ I think I was standing in my own way for that for a long time and had a really good conversation actually with Thomas Newberger from Believe in the Run about it. Carrie: Yay! Yay! Yeah. Emily: And ⁓ felt really encouraged by that. And so I am in the process of of making that all happen with the people at iHeart right now. And then bigger than that, I mean just having more of these conversations, right? I wanna keep guesting on other podcasts. I wanna keep ⁓ motivating her to live a healthier and happier life in whatever way feels good for her. And so continuing to meet women where they're at, continuing to have these great. Carrie: Mm-hmm. Emily: Conversations, continuing to show up IRL and host live events. I'm just excited to keep doing more. I feel like I am so far from done. And there is so much more that I want to do, and so many more people that I want to meet. And like you, I'm sure. I'm thinking about LA 28 and and what it is that I want to do there and how I want to show up there and starting to speak those things into existence and manifest who knows what. And Carrie: Yeah. Emily: That's that's what we're figuring out when we think about the next five years. Carrie: Well, NLA is only two years away. I just was reminded of that today. So we gotta get after it, lady. Okay, well, this is the time for the Rundot Rapid Fire. I don't know if you remember these, but I got a few this or that's would you rather type things. Reading books or watch movies. ⁓ Making bagels, which you have some amazing bagels that you like to showcase. Or head out to the bakery. Skip the baking. Emily: ⁓ I know it. I'm ready. Okay. Bucks. I mean, I haven't baked in a while. Right now I'm on in a head out to the bakery kind of phase. Yeah. Carrie: Yep, you like those those ⁓ little croissants and stuff like that being pair Okay, mile repeats or long tempos. Emily: Croissant. I love a croissant. Mmm I'll repeat. Carrie: Really? So would you rather do those hill repeats that you did today or mile repeats? Emily: I mean ⁓ definitely mile repeats, not hill repeats for sure. Carrie: Okay. Would you rather pack for trips or unpack from trips? Really? I don't know what I would like to do right now. I am not f I know. I don't know what I'd like to do. I think I like coming home and unpacking and just getting. Emily: Pack for trips. I'm like, what would you like to do, Gary? I do, I will say, like again, I am in New York right now for like a three week stint and it has been such a joy to be home. Carrie: So nice. Yeah. Yeah. And that's good. We want to be home, but then we like to go again. I get I get a little antsy after a while. Okay, half tights or split s split shorts. Cause you rock them both. Emily: Yeah. I'm trying to rock more split shorts. It is truly a work in progress. I would say right now in the summer for sure, split shorts. ⁓ I, from my weight loss journey, although it's not on display all the time, but I do have a fair amount of loose skin on my thighs, which can be a bit challenging with a split short. And it's always just also a radical act of appreciation for self and embracing me as I am. But yes, sometimes. Carrie: Yeah. Emily: The the thighs can be in charge and they have a mind of their chafing own. And so I just have to be smart about when I rock the splitties. Carrie: Yeah. of with you. I don't know, but I do know. I thought you were maybe gonna say both because you are the cutest when you put and not everyone can do this. You like the half tight with the split short over. It is so cute on you. Emily: I like a lair. Yeah, if I'm doing I will say any run over five or six miles, like I think maybe six is my cap for a split. Like I'm just like, you don't know what's gonna happen after six. So any run over six, I'm su certainly like a tight biker styles short. Yeah. Carrie: Okay. Yeah. Okay. I get it. Okay, bandanas or hats. Emily: ⁓ this is a hard one. I have been in this bandana phase like many of the the girlies lately. if I had to choose one though, I'd probably choose a hat. Carrie: Okay. But the bandanas are so cute. I kind of feel a little bit like I'm too old. No, please do. Because I do think you get to and and maybe if you do end up having children, maybe it's the fact that my sixteen year old daughter is so cute and ⁓ with everything on that I'm like, there is no way I could leave the house like this. Cause I am always like Okay, that sounds good. Would you rather watch a marathon? Emily: ⁓ you're so sweet. I don't know if I'm cool enough to be wearing them, but I'm doing it. ⁓ you could. I'm gonna I'm gonna get you a bandana and we're gonna we're gonna wear that. Carrie: Or attract me. Emily: Attract Me. I mean, I l I love a marathon. I love I love all of them, but I would rather watch Attra. Carrie: Do you think? Yeah. There is something about a marathon for me though that makes that brings me to tears, even when I'm on camera. Like I can't hardly handle it. They have to go to commercial half the time because I'm like get blubbery mess. But I I get inspired at track meets in a different way. Like almost like I get fired up. Like I feel that energy. Maybe it's from the sprints or the throws or something. ⁓ but the marathon, it's like this journey. And I know it's a journey on the track too. Emily: I almost feel like in person marathon at home track meet. Carrie: Okay. Track me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I get that. I get that. Okay. Emily: In person like I mean, especially like New York Marathon, like nothing like it. Nothing like it. Carrie: ⁓ Yeah. And I've never gotten to spectate that. So that would be so cool. Yeah. ⁓ I am not. I am you are too. But anyway, I wasn't I wasn't looking for that, but thank you. I I do too. But I you should just come in the booth with me and we can do it, you know. There we go. ⁓ you would love it. Emily: ⁓ you're so busy working. You're such a hard worker. No, but you are, you are. I want that experience for you. Okay. You heard it here first. Guess who's I'm I'm coming into the booth, New York Marathon, twenty twenty six. Carrie: Okay, there we go. Okay. Doing your podcast from home in your awesome setup like that or doing live events like hosting live podcasts, MCing, doing all the things you do. Emily: live events and I will caveat that by saying that I as much as I love a live podcast and the events because I love to be able to be in person and connect in that way and come together in community. Every time a a podcast that is done in the studio is gonna give you better content, I think. Carrie: Yeah. Uh-huh, for sure. Okay. Last one, women in sport or women in sport. Emily: my god, what a stump question. All the woman in sports. Carrie: I know, right? We're gonna just keep promoting all the women in sport because it is amazing. And I'm gonna keep on promoting you, lady, because you are so fun. You are a big reason why I open up Instagram daily. I love to look at your stuff. And yeah, I I we need to get some lace ⁓ up videos going again. ⁓ my god, I think Okay. Emily: ⁓ you're so sweet. ⁓ my God. TBT the lace up. Yeah. I've been like, you know, in my old age, sitting down on the ground just doesn't work the same. So now I like have a little stool that I sit on. Back in the day when I like when I feel like Instagram was just becoming like a thing that I was using. I used to sit on this little pillow in my apartment and tie my shoes and I would call it the lace up. And so these days I've done like a modified ⁓ a version and and it's working for me. But yeah, I love I love it when people Carrie: That's okay. I love that. Yeah. Mm-hmm. ⁓ Emily: Tag me in videos lacing up their shoes in the morning. So also, if you're not a manager and you're just someone that wants to get in my DMs and show me that you are getting up and getting active, not only will I cheer you on, but I will repost you. So tag me over at Emily Body. Carrie: I did too. Great. All right, Emily. Thank you. Keep getting after it, okay? Emily: I will. I appreciate you so much, Carrie. Thanks for having me on.
