- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Kate Dreston and welcome to Kate’s Devotional Podcast.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I drop my podcast every Wednesday.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: It's always a five minute or less devotional to bring you encouragement as we try to live our lives according to the Bible.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: So glad you're here.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: You know, I remember back when I was a little girl, maybe six or seven, I was kind of scared of storms.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Well, now I have to set the stage.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: I lived way out in the country on a farm and our nearest neighbor was, I don't know, about a half mile away.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And there were flat wheat fields all around us.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And we lived right smack dab in the middle of Kansas, otherwise known as Tornado Alley.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: So we took our storms seriously because thunderstorms turned into tornadoes often.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: I'd seen tornadoes before, but only from far away.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: But I knew enough of them to be scared of them.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Well, even though I lived in a big sturdy two-story house that offered pretty good protection from the storm, we didn't have a basement so that always made me nervous too.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: I grew up with a whole bunch of brothers who felt the need to tease me at every opportunity and they loved it when they knew I was scared.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So, I'd build myself a little fort.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I'd drape a blanket over my little writing table in the living room.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I'd act like I was playing house so they wouldn't tease me.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And I would take some of my stuffed animals in there to wait out the storm with me.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: You know, stuffed animals make everything better, right?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Well, it made me feel more secure, like I was hiding in a little safe area where the storm couldn't find me.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Well, in reality, you know my flimsy little blanket would do nothing to protect me from any tornado.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: But I still felt some comfort, you know, just sitting in the little space I created.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Well, thankfully, as Christians, we have a much more secure shelter in God.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: There is no storm that is too dark, too violent, too big for God to calm in our lives.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: The Bible tells us about the security and comfort of abiding in the presence of God.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to read Psalms 91 verses 1 through 3 out of the New King James Version.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: This is a great portion of scripture to have memorized so that we can recall those in a time of need.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: It says, He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I will trust.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: you know as Christians we live in the shadow of the Almighty where he is our refuge and fortress I mean did you catch that word fortress we're talking solid sturdy nothing is going to be able to tear it down we are completely safe with God we can trust him so what storm are you going through today you know whatever it is it's not too big or too hard for him to help you through
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: God is our faithful shield and protector, and he's going to provide comfort, hope, help, healing, anything else we need.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: You know, there's another verse I love.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: It's found in Psalms 46, 1 and 2.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: I'll read that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Let's turn to God with all that we're going through today.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Let's let Him calm our fears and ask Him to help us trust Him.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: You know, I know that's my heart's desire.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I hope it's yours too.
