- 0:09What is going on, everybody?
- 0:14Welcome
- 0:37To lunch hour with Sam is
- 0:38what we're going to call it today.
- 0:41Just on my lunch hour from work,
- 0:43I pop on with an old friend, Sam Cornway.
- 0:46What's going on, man?
- 0:47Hey, man.
- 0:48How are you?
- 0:48Doing great.
- 0:50Yeah.
- 0:51Got the Murph shirt on.
- 0:52You getting ready for Murph?
- 0:55No, actually not.
- 0:55I'm going to try to prep myself for semis,
- 0:57you know.
- 0:59That little thing coming up?
- 1:01Yeah, that little thing, you know.
- 1:04But I'm going to definitely
- 1:05do it after semis, that's for sure.
- 1:08All right.
- 1:09Yeah,
- 1:10so you guys are – you're last this year,
- 1:12right?
- 1:13Yeah.
- 1:14Yeah, we have the fun stuff at the end,
- 1:17you know.
- 1:18Got to weigh the whole month
- 1:19and watch everyone go first.
- 1:20But, hey, it's part of the game.
- 1:23Yeah, there's been a lot of talk about,
- 1:25like, you know,
- 1:26there was a little leak
- 1:27with the workouts and then
- 1:28CrossFit went ahead and
- 1:29released them all.
- 1:31that maybe they were out too
- 1:33soon and that athletes
- 1:36could actually get burnt
- 1:37out because they knew the
- 1:37movements and they would
- 1:39program them too much.
- 1:41What are your thoughts on that?
- 1:43I mean, I can definitely see that,
- 1:45you know, happening.
- 1:47Especially now, like you said,
- 1:49they released it way too early.
- 1:51They got a leak and everything.
- 1:53So now, I mean, as much as we try not to,
- 1:56it's kind of like hard to
- 1:57not practice them, right?
- 2:00When you know what you're
- 2:01going to do at competition time,
- 2:03you want to be the best.
- 2:04had it as possible.
- 2:06So, uh, I think it's, uh, it is hard.
- 2:08I think it's hard to manage like how to,
- 2:10um,
- 2:11not do them too much often and too much,
- 2:13try to not do too much of
- 2:15variation of those workouts.
- 2:17But, um,
- 2:18I guess we're all in the same boat.
- 2:21So, uh,
- 2:22I guess it's the same for everyone.
- 2:24Yeah.
- 2:24Cause like as important as it is,
- 2:27because this is the leg
- 2:28that gets you to the games.
- 2:30Your goal is to do well at the games.
- 2:33So you don't want to, like, mess it up,
- 2:36but you don't want to, like,
- 2:37overdo it because you still
- 2:38have more training to do.
- 2:40Yeah.
- 2:40Yeah, exactly.
- 2:41No, it's – I think it's – I will say, like,
- 2:45if your goal is to – I mean,
- 2:48if your goal is to actually
- 2:49perform the games,
- 2:50you've got to be really
- 2:50careful about those workouts.
- 2:51And, like,
- 2:52you want to do some variation of
- 2:54those and actually maybe –
- 2:56hit one each time, each workout, like,
- 2:59just to see and know how
- 3:00it's going to feel on the come floor.
- 3:03And after that,
- 3:04try to move on and just do
- 3:06maybe one variation of the
- 3:09workout a week.
- 3:10And after that, try to be done with it.
- 3:15Definitely,
- 3:15if you have one workout that you're like,
- 3:17hmm, this one's going to be bad for me,
- 3:18maybe pass more time on it.
- 3:20But at the same time, like,
- 3:23you only have three weeks, so...
- 3:25Yeah.
- 3:26And the way some of them are designed are,
- 3:28they're designed for you to
- 3:28go into that dark space and you don't,
- 3:31you don't want to practice that a bunch.
- 3:33You don't want to know what
- 3:34that feels like till you have to do it.
- 3:36No, exactly.
- 3:37No, it's, uh, like if we, uh,
- 3:40Let's say we look at the last workout,
- 3:42Evan Six, the cow bike, muscle up,
- 3:45and the heavy lunges one.
- 3:47I think that's the kind of
- 3:48workout that you don't want
- 3:49to do too much.
- 3:52Just because you're going to
- 3:53be in the zone for that workout.
- 3:54So even if you want to
- 3:56practice it a lot and try
- 3:57to go as fast and as hard as you can,
- 3:59you're definitely not going
- 4:00as fast as you're going to
- 4:02be on the comfort.
- 4:03It's kind of like those workouts are like,
- 4:05I mean, that's for me personally.
- 4:07Um, those kinds of workout,
- 4:08I'm not going to touch it actually.
- 4:10I'm just going to be like, Hey,
- 4:11there's going to be a one
- 4:12shot deal on the come floor.
- 4:15And, um, I know how,
- 4:17how bad it's going to be.
- 4:18So I don't have to practice that.
- 4:20Um, I might do some, you know,
- 4:21like heavy lunges with the dumbbells,
- 4:23some muscle up, like email style workouts,
- 4:25but like,
- 4:26I'm not going to do actually the
- 4:27full workouts.
- 4:28So like you said, it's a, yeah,
- 4:29there's a couple of
- 4:30workouts in that weekend.
- 4:32That's going to be bad and hurt.
- 4:33Yeah.
- 4:35Yeah.
- 4:35Well, and I, you know,
- 4:37the thing is that it's gone
- 4:39back to classic CrossFit.
- 4:40Like you could drop this
- 4:41semifinal in 2015 and it
- 4:44would be appropriate for a 2015 regional.
- 4:48Does that play into your
- 4:49game or do you like the new
- 4:52fancy toys and objects?
- 4:55I mean,
- 4:56I think I'm kind of like in the
- 4:57middle of it.
- 4:59I do like the old school CrossFit,
- 5:01like you said, like, you know, 14, 15,
- 5:0316.
- 5:03Those years were great to watch.
- 5:05And I think what Adrian...
- 5:08brought on the table in the
- 5:09last couple of years,
- 5:11let's say in the last two years,
- 5:14it wasn't bad either.
- 5:15There was maybe some stuff that, you know,
- 5:18they should have given the
- 5:20athletes some heads up maybe,
- 5:22just to make it like a
- 5:22better show for people to watch,
- 5:24but I don't think it was like, you know,
- 5:26crazy bad.
- 5:28But now I feel like it's kind of like,
- 5:31if I had to program it, let's say,
- 5:33in the best world,
- 5:34I would have to try to be like,
- 5:36In the middle of those two, you know,
- 5:38like let's try to go back to old CrossFit,
- 5:40but let's also keep some of
- 5:42the new stuff that we just, you know,
- 5:45put on.
- 5:46And now we're just totally
- 5:47back to old school CrossFit.
- 5:49It's fine.
- 5:50It's good.
- 5:51It's going to be a great
- 5:52show for people to watch.
- 5:53It's just like think at the
- 5:54level of the fitness of the
- 5:56game right now that we are.
- 6:00we might have some – I mean,
- 6:01I believe we're going to
- 6:02have a lot of surprise on
- 6:03the leaderboard at the end
- 6:04of those weekends just because,
- 6:05like you said, there's no, like,
- 6:06skills anymore.
- 6:08Like, they just decided to remove it.
- 6:11But at the same time, we'll see.
- 6:13We'll see because we do know the workout,
- 6:16but they might still have
- 6:17some tricks that we don't know yet.
- 6:21Yeah,
- 6:22the one big unknown seems to be that
- 6:24handstand walk and what
- 6:25you're going to face during that.
- 6:28Yeah.
- 6:29The one cool thing is,
- 6:30for the first time ever at
- 6:31this stage of the competition,
- 6:33you're not going to run with a machine.
- 6:35You're going to run on land.
- 6:38Yeah, that's pretty cool.
- 6:39I was bummed about that.
- 6:41I think it's about time that we...
- 6:43We dropped that air runner
- 6:44and tried to make it, you know,
- 6:45like as much as a real run, you know.
- 6:49I mean,
- 6:50the air runner is like it's a great
- 6:51tool for training, I think,
- 6:52especially for me,
- 6:53like in the winter here.
- 6:55Uh,
- 6:55it's kind of like impossible to run
- 6:56outside,
- 6:57but like once we can get outside
- 6:59and run on, you know, tracks or streets,
- 7:01um, it's way more fun.
- 7:03And I think it's actually the real run,
- 7:05you know, compared to like, uh,
- 7:08big deals on the runners that are heavier,
- 7:10they get some advantage on it.
- 7:12So, um, no, I'm pumped about that.
- 7:14It's going to be cool.
- 7:15Uh,
- 7:15especially that they're going to do it
- 7:16like, you know, on each weekends.
- 7:19Um,
- 7:19I saw some comments, you know,
- 7:20on Instagram that people
- 7:21were kind of like, well,
- 7:22it's going to be hard to
- 7:23compare times and like,
- 7:25because it's not the same parkour.
- 7:27I'm like, who gives a, you know,
- 7:29like there's like,
- 7:32it's going to be the same
- 7:32course with those people doing it.
- 7:34And like,
- 7:34it's going to be fun for people
- 7:35to watch actually is going
- 7:36to be there and for people
- 7:38to watch at home.
- 7:39So, um, and fun for the athlete.
- 7:42When you guys are on the air
- 7:43runner for an 800, like,
- 7:45The spectator has no idea where you're at.
- 7:47How boring is that?
- 7:50Just a bunch of dudes and
- 7:51girls running on their hair
- 7:52on their... Well,
- 7:53I don't know where he's at now.
- 7:55Who's winning?
- 7:56The judge moved to click the
- 7:59thing up one notch now.
- 8:01Yeah.
- 8:03It's going to be so much
- 8:03cooler seeing who's in front of you,
- 8:07who's behind you.
- 8:08And then even for the athlete,
- 8:09you'll be able to see, like,
- 8:10I've got to make up 10
- 8:12meters on this guy.
- 8:13Yep.
- 8:14And how am I going to do that?
- 8:16Yeah, no, exactly.
- 8:17It really is going to feel like, you know,
- 8:20like a bunch of kids racing
- 8:21in the streets.
- 8:22That's it.
- 8:23Like, hey,
- 8:24who's first and who's second and third?
- 8:26And, like, let's try to catch those guys.
- 8:29Like, we're back to 10,
- 8:3012 years old and racing each other.
- 8:32So it's going to be nice.
- 8:35Yeah,
- 8:35Wad Zombie jumps in with the air
- 8:37runner at semifinals last
- 8:38year was a snooze fest.
- 8:40Oh, yeah.
- 8:41Yeah, I agree.
- 8:42Yeah.
- 8:43So, so I want to,
- 8:46I want to go back a little
- 8:47bit because it's been a
- 8:48minute since you and I've talked, um,
- 8:50we've seen each other at events, you know,
- 8:52we, we say hi, we give the hugs,
- 8:55we do that stuff,
- 8:56but I haven't got to sit
- 8:57down with you in a little bit.
- 8:58And, um,
- 9:00You took a year to go team
- 9:02before last year.
- 9:03Yep.
- 9:04What did that do for you in that year?
- 9:07I know before you went into it,
- 9:09you told me that it was a
- 9:11way for you to be able to
- 9:12work on your holes.
- 9:14Were you able to do that?
- 9:16Some of those, I will say some of it.
- 9:18Yeah.
- 9:19And, um, I mean, I guess as an athlete,
- 9:21you're always going to have
- 9:22to work on something.
- 9:23Right.
- 9:24And, uh,
- 9:25let's not lie that running is
- 9:26always going to be my, you know,
- 9:28my Achilles, how you say that in English?
- 9:30Like my, uh, your Achilles heel.
- 9:33Yeah.
- 9:34So that's for me running is
- 9:35always going to be that.
- 9:36And, um,
- 9:37Yeah, I mean,
- 9:38I'm a way better runner than
- 9:39I was if I looked at it five years ago,
- 9:42you know.
- 9:44Last year, the games, I mean,
- 9:46I blew up my back the day before,
- 9:48so I tried to run as hard
- 9:50as I can with a broken back.
- 9:52It's kind of hard.
- 9:55But you see,
- 9:57for that running 500 workout coming up,
- 9:59I mean, I'm feeling like...
- 10:03You know,
- 10:03there's way too much good dudes
- 10:05there who's going to run
- 10:06way faster than me,
- 10:07but I feel pretty confident
- 10:08that it should be, like,
- 10:09not a terrible workout for me.
- 10:12So I'm actually pumped about
- 10:14it to actually being able
- 10:16to be healthy and test my run finally,
- 10:19like, at the best capacity that I can.
- 10:21So I'm excited for that.
- 10:24So, yeah, I did fix a couple of them,
- 10:28but I'm still working on some others,
- 10:30you know.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:33What was that experience
- 10:34like being on a team with Rich?
- 10:37I mean, what can I say?
- 10:38It was the best, right?
- 10:40I mean, we got there.
- 10:41We had a fun time.
- 10:43Crushed workouts,
- 10:45win the games with the best.
- 10:47The girls was amazing, teammates too.
- 10:49So, no, it was cool.
- 10:51It's definitely something I want to do.
- 10:53Again, just because, you know, I mean,
- 10:55you know, me growing up,
- 10:56I played team sports all my life.
- 10:58So falling back into that
- 11:00portion for me was kind of like, oh,
- 11:02I miss that.
- 11:03It's actually if you if I had to choose,
- 11:07let's say, like,
- 11:08what is the best between
- 11:09individual and teams?
- 11:11The team's games is so much more fun.
- 11:13There's so much more, you know, like,
- 11:15the communication that you need,
- 11:18the synchro stuff.
- 11:20Like, it just, the game is just more fun.
- 11:22I feel like, as usual, like,
- 11:24I'm doing it just because
- 11:25it's something that I want
- 11:26to accomplish for myself, but...
- 11:29I feel like the team side of
- 11:31it is way more fun to do.
- 11:33Not because there's less
- 11:35pressure or anything.
- 11:37Especially right now,
- 11:39the team side is getting so
- 11:40much stronger.
- 11:42Those tough teams,
- 11:43they're doing it full-time
- 11:44individually now.
- 11:47the level of fitness that
- 11:48those teams are bringing on
- 11:49the table is super high and
- 11:51um so you got to be serious
- 11:52and like and like everybody
- 11:54else like they're there to
- 11:55win so uh there's nothing
- 11:57less pressure in teams and
- 11:59in general it's just
- 11:59different but um for me I
- 12:01just I prefer I will like
- 12:03if I had to choose one of
- 12:04for the rest of my life I
- 12:05will have big team um yeah
- 12:08that's for sure
- 12:09So I grew up playing both
- 12:11team and individual sports.
- 12:12And for me, when I'm on a team,
- 12:14like I push myself beyond
- 12:16my limits because I can let
- 12:19myself down a lot easier
- 12:21and I can let others down.
- 12:23And did you find that when
- 12:26you were on a team with
- 12:27Rich that you didn't want
- 12:29to let him down?
- 12:30And so maybe you pushed a
- 12:31little bit harder?
- 12:32Yeah.
- 12:34I mean, I don't think so.
- 12:37It's hard to answer that.
- 12:38I think definitely in certain workouts,
- 12:42me and Rich was actually
- 12:44maybe pushing beyond our
- 12:45limits because the girls
- 12:46were crushing us in training.
- 12:48I mean,
- 12:49Andrew and Taylor are so fit that
- 12:51there were workouts in the
- 12:52gym that me and Rich were totally dying.
- 12:55And maybe we get some time,
- 12:56like a couple of times we did got,
- 12:58you know, that extra gear if you want.
- 13:01Yeah.
- 13:01trying to keep up with the girls.
- 13:03But I would not say that I
- 13:06push it harder to not let him down.
- 13:10But I just feel like, you know,
- 13:13especially when you're competing in team,
- 13:14like, it's not just you, you know.
- 13:16Like,
- 13:17there's 300 person in that team that
- 13:19is counting on you.
- 13:20So you don't want to, you know,
- 13:21mess up things.
- 13:22You don't want to be the guy
- 13:24who's – or the girls who, you know,
- 13:27the blame is on because you
- 13:28guys did not –
- 13:30did great in the workout so
- 13:31that's definitely for sure
- 13:32you know like in the back
- 13:34of your mind but I had I
- 13:37was lucky to be like in a
- 13:38great great team and the
- 13:40job was actually pretty
- 13:41easy you know like I'm not
- 13:43saying that the competition
- 13:44was easy but like my job
- 13:46was just hey just do your
- 13:47job keep up with those
- 13:48three and everything will
- 13:50be fine you know and I feel
- 13:52like Rich Taylor and Andrea
- 13:53did an amazing job just you
- 13:54know showing me the tips on
- 13:55the warms and stuff like
- 13:56that and like you know
- 13:59I feel like it's a,
- 14:00I didn't have it like hard.
- 14:01I think,
- 14:02I think you may be one of like
- 14:03five people to say that
- 14:05keeping up with rich Andrea
- 14:07and Taylor is easy.
- 14:10I mean, it's not easy to do.
- 14:11It's just like, there's so much,
- 14:13there's so much great teammate that, uh,
- 14:16when they show you what, how to do it,
- 14:18like it's, it gets the job way easier,
- 14:20you know?
- 14:21Uh, no, I mean,
- 14:22they're definitely hard to
- 14:23follow in the workouts.
- 14:24That's for sure.
- 14:24Yeah.
- 14:25Yeah.
- 14:25Yeah.
- 14:26It's, it's just like me as a mere mortal,
- 14:29like that isn't even
- 14:30comprehensible to me.
- 14:31So yeah.
- 14:33Uh, Sarah Cooper says.
- 14:34Yeah.
- 14:37So I promise I'll go back.
- 14:39That's for sure.
- 14:40Um, so are you still with mayhem today?
- 14:44Yep.
- 14:45Yeah.
- 14:45I'm still in mayhem.
- 14:46I'm just, uh,
- 14:47I haven't been there in a
- 14:48while just because, uh, you know,
- 14:50I'm a dad of two now and
- 14:51they're getting older.
- 14:53And my wife has given me a
- 14:56lot of her time in the last
- 14:57couple of years, but now I'm trying to,
- 14:58you know,
- 14:59make it as much fair as possible,
- 15:01even if I'm doing a
- 15:02terrible job at it right now.
- 15:04Because, you know, as a full time, I mean,
- 15:05I'm a full time athlete,
- 15:06so I got to train a lot.
- 15:08But I'm trying to I did stay
- 15:11home like way more.
- 15:13compared to the last four
- 15:14years um less travel more
- 15:17training at home more time
- 15:18with the family and uh but
- 15:20I'll go be I'll be there
- 15:21maybe a couple days before
- 15:22semis and uh I'll probably
- 15:25gonna head back before uh
- 15:26the games to prep with the
- 15:27guys there but um yeah I'm
- 15:29still with ma'am so what's
- 15:32it like being a dad it's
- 15:34fun I like it especially
- 15:35right now you know like I'm
- 15:36getting into space like all I am is uh
- 15:39six years old and Mila is
- 15:41kind of like two and a half.
- 15:43So like right in the middle
- 15:44of terrible too, but, uh,
- 15:46we having a great time.
- 15:47It's fun.
- 15:47Like Liam started baseball
- 15:49last summer and the season
- 15:49just started again.
- 15:50So we have baseball twice a week.
- 15:53Um, Mila is, she has a lot of energy.
- 15:57So we never have, you know,
- 15:58like that little, uh,
- 16:00Relax time with her.
- 16:01We always like doing something.
- 16:02So it's cool.
- 16:02I like it.
- 16:04It's fun watching her grow
- 16:07up again and remembering
- 16:08things that we did with
- 16:09Liam back in the days, you know.
- 16:11So I like it.
- 16:12Yeah, it's super fun.
- 16:15So do you still have the garage gym?
- 16:18Yeah,
- 16:18I built a new one a year and a half
- 16:21ago now.
- 16:22So I went from a 10 by 12 by
- 16:26a big 30 by 30, 17 feet high.
- 16:29So now I'm able to do way
- 16:31more stuff than before.
- 16:33Yeah.
- 16:34So,
- 16:34so you saw Rich's barn and you just had
- 16:36to have one for yourself.
- 16:37Yeah, exactly.
- 16:38Just, uh, twice smaller though.
- 16:40Yeah.
- 16:42But, uh, no, it's great.
- 16:43I'm, I'm grateful for that.
- 16:45Um, being able to have the, you know,
- 16:47that Merck fitness company
- 16:48that's giving me all the equipment and,
- 16:50um,
- 16:51pulling the gym so I can
- 16:52train full time and having
- 16:53all the equipment that I need.
- 16:54So, uh, yeah, I'm grateful for that.
- 16:57Are you,
- 16:58are you good training by yourself?
- 17:01Uh, I do, I do actually.
- 17:03I don't want to sound like, uh, like, like,
- 17:06uh,
- 17:07I don't know,
- 17:08like a douchebag or something, but I do.
- 17:09I'm great to train by myself.
- 17:11It's just something that I have in me.
- 17:13You know,
- 17:15I have the I have the chance to
- 17:16also have a lot of friends
- 17:17that come to my house.
- 17:19So like on a day to day,
- 17:21I will say that one session
- 17:24a day I'm with friends and
- 17:26like the other session I am by myself.
- 17:30And I kind of like it like that.
- 17:32I like it both ways.
- 17:34It's fun to have people
- 17:35train with me so I'm not
- 17:36totally by myself,
- 17:37but I do also like those
- 17:39alone sessions that you
- 17:41have to be in your mind and
- 17:42focus on what you have to do.
- 17:44Especially if you want to
- 17:45compete individually,
- 17:46I think it's important.
- 17:48You can't compete
- 17:49individually if you cannot
- 17:51do it by yourself.
- 17:52So that's what I believe.
- 17:54and um so yeah I like it
- 17:56both ways but uh I'm
- 17:58grateful for my friends who
- 17:58comes with me in the
- 17:59morning sometimes how close
- 18:02are you to like uh
- 18:03alexander caron and and those guys
- 18:06So Alex Caron lives,
- 18:09so like he lives actually in Quebec City.
- 18:12So it's kind of like a two
- 18:14hours and 30 minute drive.
- 18:16So yeah, it's too far for me.
- 18:18Alex Vio, he lives like 10 hours from me.
- 18:20So that's impossible.
- 18:23Jeff lives closer to me.
- 18:26We kind of like have like a
- 18:2740 minute drive ish.
- 18:31from each other.
- 18:31So that's why I've been
- 18:33there training with Jeff a
- 18:34couple of times this year.
- 18:35He came here a couple of times too.
- 18:39It's just, it's kind of hard with traffic,
- 18:41you know?
- 18:43So that's why we don't train
- 18:44as much together, but yeah.
- 18:49Yeah.
- 18:49Cause Alex and you are both
- 18:50mayhem athletes.
- 18:51I can pull a few clothes and
- 18:53just get kind of a little
- 18:54bit in here and there, but man,
- 18:56that's a long way.
- 18:57No, yeah, it's a long way.
- 18:58So, I mean, sometimes we do, you know,
- 19:00like we do workouts,
- 19:01we do the same workouts so
- 19:02we can talk about scores and like,
- 19:04even with the people at Mayhem,
- 19:05like Luke and stuff like that,
- 19:06people like Guy,
- 19:09we do workouts that are the same.
- 19:10So it's fun.
- 19:11So we can compare, you know,
- 19:12times to times.
- 19:14So, but yeah,
- 19:15definitely it will be like a huge,
- 19:18huge plus if the travel was not that far.
- 19:22So a while ago, I was talking to Jeff,
- 19:24and he said one of the
- 19:25hardest parts about working
- 19:26out in Canada is when
- 19:29spring breaks and you can
- 19:30finally get outside,
- 19:33you want to go gung-ho into
- 19:34getting outside.
- 19:36And he found that early in his career,
- 19:38it made him peak too early in the season.
- 19:41Yep.
- 19:42So he almost had to, like,
- 19:44woe it back and pull the
- 19:45reins back on getting too
- 19:47excited about spring.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:48Yeah, no, I believe that.
- 19:50It is because, you know,
- 19:51like in the winter for us, I mean,
- 19:55if we have, it's kind of like, I mean,
- 19:57I don't think it's as bad as Iceland,
- 19:59but like we don't have a
- 20:00lot of sun in the winter.
- 20:02So when the sun comes out, like in spring,
- 20:06like in summer, like you said,
- 20:07like we want to get outside and like,
- 20:09Just today, like, I have a long run to do,
- 20:12and I'm going to wait until, like,
- 20:14later this afternoon when
- 20:15the sun's going to be, like, you know,
- 20:16more warm so I can go at
- 20:18the track and do it.
- 20:19But, like, yeah,
- 20:23you definitely have to be
- 20:24careful with that.
- 20:24That's for sure.
- 20:25But I feel like after mid-June,
- 20:29end of June, you're fine.
- 20:31You know, like,
- 20:31it's a summer for everyone
- 20:32in the world almost, so you're good.
- 20:36So one of the other things
- 20:37that we talked about way
- 20:38back is that you were
- 20:39working with Jim Hensel.
- 20:41Are you still working with him on Mindset?
- 20:43Yeah,
- 20:44Jim is a really great friend of mine.
- 20:46We keep in touch.
- 20:47We've both been busy,
- 20:49but we still make calls time to time.
- 20:52And, yeah, we do still some work.
- 20:55I mean, we still do some work together.
- 20:57But we also, you know,
- 20:58like we're friends now.
- 20:59So we talk about a lot of stuff,
- 21:00life and everything.
- 21:03But I'm really,
- 21:04really happy and so
- 21:05grateful to have Jim in my life.
- 21:07Not just for my CrossFit career, you know,
- 21:09like just for me as a human being,
- 21:12Jim is definitely someone
- 21:13I'm looking up to.
- 21:16The way he acts with people, the way he is,
- 21:18he definitely made me a
- 21:19better human and a better dad.
- 21:22I still have a lot of work to do.
- 21:25But, no, I'm really,
- 21:27really grateful for Jim.
- 21:29I'm excited to go see him actually soon.
- 21:31Yeah.
- 21:32Did I observe that he's been
- 21:33your coach at the last few events?
- 21:36Yeah,
- 21:36he's been with me last semifinal and
- 21:38last two games.
- 21:41He's not going to be with me
- 21:42at semis because he's, I mean,
- 21:44his personal life,
- 21:45he's got some stuff to do.
- 21:48But definitely he might be
- 21:50with me again at the games.
- 21:51If he's able to free himself,
- 21:54he's going to be with me again,
- 21:55that's for sure.
- 21:56So how does it work when
- 21:58Mayhem's taking a bunch of
- 21:59people like you and Luke
- 22:01and Roman and all those
- 22:02people were at semis last year together?
- 22:05Do you guys hang out in the
- 22:06back as a group with all the coaches,
- 22:09or do you have your own personal coach?
- 22:13I mean, we all have our personal coach.
- 22:17Definitely, you know,
- 22:18like me and Luke are really good friends.
- 22:22So we do, you know, help each other.
- 22:24I can remember last year at the semifinal,
- 22:27you know, last workouts,
- 22:28we were by our side by side.
- 22:30And I mean...
- 22:33Sorry, Luke is a monster on the eco bike.
- 22:34So I knew that workout was good for him.
- 22:36So we kind of like, you know,
- 22:38making jokes and like
- 22:39laughing at each other.
- 22:40Like, I'm going to kick your ass.
- 22:41And I know you're not,
- 22:42but you definitely kick my
- 22:43ass at the end.
- 22:45But so, yeah, I mean,
- 22:47I feel like it depends.
- 22:49It depends with who.
- 22:50Like, you know,
- 22:50I do respect a lot of Roman.
- 22:52But I'm not a great friend
- 22:54with him just because, you know,
- 22:55I haven't been there a lot
- 22:56with him at Mayhem.
- 22:58And we don't talk that much.
- 23:00So I don't really talk with
- 23:03him when we're competing
- 23:04because it just feels like
- 23:05the right time.
- 23:06But, like,
- 23:06every time I was at Mayhem and we were,
- 23:09like, you know, having conversation,
- 23:10he was a great guy.
- 23:11But I'm just not as much
- 23:14close that I am with Luke as an example.
- 23:17So, yeah, I mean, to answer the question,
- 23:20we do –
- 23:21We try as much as we can to
- 23:25keep it friendly, but hey,
- 23:28we're competing, so sometimes it's hard.
- 23:31Yeah,
- 23:32I actually got a really good glimpse
- 23:33at you and Luke's
- 23:34relationship because Jamie and I,
- 23:37my partner,
- 23:38we were at the finish line at
- 23:41semis last year when you
- 23:42guys both finished at Echo
- 23:43Bike and had to wait for
- 23:45the final results.
- 23:46And we were just kind of hanging out there,
- 23:48and it was obvious you two
- 23:50are pretty close.
- 23:52Yeah, no, no, yeah,
- 23:53I was really happy for him to qualify.
- 23:56Luke has been, I mean,
- 23:56I've been knowing Luke for a while now,
- 23:58and he's been really,
- 23:59really working hard to get there.
- 24:01And, you know, team,
- 24:03going team the year before
- 24:04definitely paid off a lot for him.
- 24:06And after that, making it to the game,
- 24:08it really was something, you know,
- 24:10a big accomplishment for him,
- 24:12not just as an athlete, you know,
- 24:14as a human.
- 24:14So, yeah, I'm super, super happy for him,
- 24:18and he's going to do great
- 24:19again this year, I'm sure.
- 24:22I met Luke at TFX a couple years ago.
- 24:26Just a solid dude.
- 24:30Great guy.
- 24:32Definitely not the guy from the show.
- 24:33I can tell you that.
- 24:36I've never watched The Bachelor,
- 24:37but everything I've heard,
- 24:40he was opposite of that.
- 24:41He was so fun to hang out with.
- 24:43I love him.
- 24:46Um,
- 24:47so I want to talk about watching your
- 24:50career in my opinion,
- 24:53like in the last couple of years,
- 24:54the only thing that has held you back is,
- 24:58is injury.
- 24:59Yep.
- 25:00Like,
- 25:01you've had – the one problem I've
- 25:03seen with your game is finishing an event,
- 25:06like finishing it healthy.
- 25:09Last year at the games,
- 25:10it was obvious your back
- 25:11was hurting again.
- 25:12Have you figured out
- 25:14anything this offseason to
- 25:17more bulletproof that so it
- 25:20doesn't come up?
- 25:21Yeah.
- 25:21I mean, hopefully I did find a solution,
- 25:23you know.
- 25:25I definitely – something
- 25:26that I did this year,
- 25:28and it's actually hard to do still,
- 25:31Um, I did call a lot of volume.
- 25:34Um, that's not something easy to do.
- 25:38And that's something that I like to do.
- 25:40But definitely, you know, like you said,
- 25:42if we look at my resume at the games,
- 25:44I always I mean, I got,
- 25:48let's say we don't count 2019, you know,
- 25:50in 2020.
- 25:51Those year, I mean,
- 25:52first year with all the
- 25:53cuts after each workout.
- 25:55kind of like a dumb year
- 25:57after that 2020 was online
- 25:59so I don't really count
- 26:00those two but like 2021 um
- 26:03getting sick from the lake
- 26:05I mean can't really control
- 26:07that right uh 2022 was fine
- 26:10um 2023 last year got had a
- 26:12great first day um messed
- 26:15up my first workout the
- 26:16second day but wasn't
- 26:18because of like injury or
- 26:19anything was actually because of me
- 26:21And I tried to catch up
- 26:22after that on the sandbag squad.
- 26:24And this is where I blew up my back.
- 26:25I might have went a little
- 26:26too hard from what I was able to do.
- 26:29But definitely, like,
- 26:31it's something that me and
- 26:32Jake made him look at in
- 26:35the offseason and try to see, like,
- 26:36all right,
- 26:38we know you can make it top ten.
- 26:40Like, you're a top ten contender.
- 26:41That's for sure.
- 26:41You're fit enough.
- 26:42Everyone knows it.
- 26:44I mean, you've been training with –
- 26:47A lot of great athletes and
- 26:48you're kicking their ass in the gym.
- 26:49So it's not like a fitness question.
- 26:51It's always like how to make
- 26:53you healthy and the best at the games.
- 26:58and so that's why we decided
- 27:01to cut volume this year a
- 27:03little bit and see if it
- 27:06will turn out pretty good
- 27:07for me and so far I mean I
- 27:09can tell it's paying off I
- 27:12haven't been doing you know
- 27:13like huge strength cycle in
- 27:16this like you know this
- 27:17season and I've been
- 27:19hitting numbers that I
- 27:20haven't touched in three
- 27:20years so like it's kind of
- 27:23like it's fun you know like
- 27:25I haven't do I haven't done a lot but
- 27:28Numbers are back and I
- 27:30didn't feel any injury in my off-season.
- 27:34After I fixed my back,
- 27:35everything was kind of good.
- 27:39I'm feeling great right now.
- 27:41I'm trying to think about it,
- 27:42but we'll see.
- 27:43It's hard to tell.
- 27:45Training is something and
- 27:46competition is something else.
- 27:48But definitely I feel and I
- 27:50believe we did the right
- 27:50decision of cutting some volume.
- 27:53and making some changes and
- 27:56more accessory stuff you
- 27:58know like I mean you know
- 27:59man like we we everyone
- 28:01knows us as like man those
- 28:03guys can train all day and
- 28:05uh that's what I like to do
- 28:07but I had to change that a
- 28:08little bit so uh less
- 28:09workouts more accessories
- 28:11um more focused on maybe
- 28:13intensity workouts
- 28:14sometimes longer stuff less
- 28:16crossfit um so far I think
- 28:19it's paying off you know
- 28:20So I'm going to keep it that way and,
- 28:22you know, pray God that the games,
- 28:25everything will do good.
- 28:27It's funny you talk about
- 28:28that because my best friend
- 28:30and I were talking today.
- 28:31Our gym has incorporated
- 28:33more accessory work into
- 28:34the day-to-day workouts.
- 28:37So, like,
- 28:38we only Metcon now as average
- 28:40Joes maybe three or four times a week,
- 28:43and then some of the days
- 28:45are just pure accessory work.
- 28:46And my body feels so much more –
- 28:49so much better just doing
- 28:51that yeah so are you
- 28:53subbing out the metcon time
- 28:55with like pure accessory
- 28:56work bodybuilding things
- 28:58like that yeah no yeah
- 28:59that's definitely what I'm
- 29:00doing right now like yeah
- 29:02if I had to take like an
- 29:03example like sometimes you
- 29:05know I will have I would
- 29:07have done like you know two
- 29:08great big metcons in the
- 29:10morning with some
- 29:12let's say barbell cycling
- 29:13stuff and some core exercise stuff.
- 29:16So like a huge 1am session,
- 29:18like do the same,
- 29:19same thing in the afternoon.
- 29:20Now I'm only,
- 29:22I'm only doing one Metcon in the morning.
- 29:24And so I cut kind of like
- 29:26one Metcon out of the way,
- 29:28do more accessories, but like,
- 29:32not as like, I mean,
- 29:34off season I was doing a
- 29:34lot of bodybuilding right now.
- 29:36I kind of cut it off a
- 29:36little bit and tried to
- 29:37make my accessories more as like
- 29:40accessories movement that we
- 29:41might see you know at the
- 29:43games kind of like um
- 29:45sandbag carry stuff where
- 29:48instead of doing it like
- 29:49you know a fourth time like
- 29:51in the medcon but like
- 29:52let's do those as
- 29:53accessories perfect form as
- 29:55much as I can so once it's
- 29:57go time well I'm gonna do
- 29:58it well you know um stuff
- 30:02like that so I cut one
- 30:03workout in the morning and
- 30:04definitely had some more cardio machines
- 30:08intervals in those routine training, uh,
- 30:11the week.
- 30:13And, uh, yeah, I mean,
- 30:14so far it's working.
- 30:15I feel fine.
- 30:16I do still feel fit.
- 30:18There's like, uh, maybe some,
- 30:21like my gymnastic,
- 30:22let's say my gymnastic
- 30:23might have take a little
- 30:24hit if I had to compare to before,
- 30:26but like,
- 30:27it's always been a strain of mine.
- 30:28So at some point you gotta, you know,
- 30:31uh, make a decision.
- 30:32Like if you want to do better at this,
- 30:33well, you got to cut some other stuff.
- 30:36That's what I did.
- 30:37Um,
- 30:37so hopefully my gymnastics is still
- 30:39pretty good for games.
- 30:40And if a must not work out
- 30:42with instant wall comes up,
- 30:43I'll be winning that workout, but, um,
- 30:46we'll see.
- 30:47It's hard to tell.
- 30:47Um, so yeah,
- 30:50that's why I'm excited
- 30:50actually to compete to a semifinal,
- 30:52you know, um,
- 30:53those workouts are pure classic CrossFit.
- 30:55They're going to be at every
- 30:57one of those going to be tight race, but,
- 30:59I want to see personally if
- 31:01what we've been doing the
- 31:02last couple of months is
- 31:03working well and if we are
- 31:05on the right path with games.
- 31:08In the past years,
- 31:10did your back flare up at
- 31:11semis ever at those events?
- 31:13You just didn't see it?
- 31:15No.
- 31:16I mean, no, not really.
- 31:17I never really actually had
- 31:19a back injury before the games last year.
- 31:23It's just that 200-pound sandbag,
- 31:25I tried to – I mean –
- 31:28I told myself that I
- 31:29couldn't move that bag.
- 31:30Like I was moving the word a year before,
- 31:32but it turns out it's a
- 31:33little heavier than I thought.
- 31:36And, uh, so that's why I, I,
- 31:38I did blow my bag.
- 31:39The recovery from it
- 31:40actually was a long time
- 31:42after the game to me,
- 31:43good two months when I came
- 31:45back from the games to fix that.
- 31:46And, um, but now it's fine.
- 31:48You know,
- 31:49I did lift five 75 couple of
- 31:50weeks ago and I'm like, huh, let me,
- 31:52that's good.
- 31:54Yeah.
- 31:54Back is strong.
- 31:55Back is strong.
- 31:56So, um, yeah.
- 31:59Awesome.
- 31:59Yeah,
- 32:00I know you were on a team at
- 32:02Guadalupalooza.
- 32:03Didn't you guys have to
- 32:04withdraw with something?
- 32:05Yeah,
- 32:08it was more like a precaution for the
- 32:09season.
- 32:10I kind of like tear a little
- 32:12one of my bicep, but nothing crazy.
- 32:15We could have kept going, but like, I mean,
- 32:17me and Rich, I mean, especially Rich,
- 32:19he was like, no, we're not doing that.
- 32:21We're not taking the risk to
- 32:22mess up your season just
- 32:23for Guadalupalooza.
- 32:25So, yeah.
- 32:27I must have thought that was
- 32:28a back injury then, but you said biceps,
- 32:31so now I get that.
- 32:34No, I'm actually super healthy right now.
- 32:36I'm happy about that,
- 32:38and I want to keep it that way.
- 32:43You didn't do as many
- 32:44off-season stuff this year either, right?
- 32:46No.
- 32:47Now I try to actually, you know,
- 32:48take a step back a little bit, fix stuff,
- 32:52and, like, fix my back.
- 32:56Fix my mind also.
- 32:57You know,
- 32:58being a professional athlete like that,
- 32:59and every year there's
- 33:00something happening,
- 33:01it did take a toll on me.
- 33:04And so I had to be... I really wanted to,
- 33:08you know,
- 33:08fix everything and be in a
- 33:09better place so I can be, you know,
- 33:13come in this season more, you know,
- 33:14with more motivation and actually...
- 33:17compete the best I can so um
- 33:20yeah yeah so and it gave
- 33:23you gave you more time as a
- 33:24dad and spent time yeah
- 33:26it's too yeah no yeah
- 33:28definitely it's uh I'm do I
- 33:31do and I still like to you
- 33:32know train hard compete and
- 33:34stuff like that but you know
- 33:36The more the kids are growing up,
- 33:38the harder it is for me to, you know,
- 33:40be selfish kind of like
- 33:42days like tomorrow and
- 33:43Saturdays when Liam doesn't
- 33:45have school and like
- 33:46everyone here at home and like just me,
- 33:48you know,
- 33:48training hard and letting my
- 33:50wife take care of everything.
- 33:51It's getting hard.
- 33:53But I still have that little
- 33:56something in me that want
- 33:57to prove it to myself that
- 33:59I can be one of the best.
- 34:00So, yeah.
- 34:03Well, with that,
- 34:04let's finish up with this.
- 34:05Going into this season,
- 34:07what is your realistic goal
- 34:08for semis and then into the games?
- 34:13Goal for semis?
- 34:14I'm not going to lie.
- 34:14I just want to qualify.
- 34:15I don't really actually care
- 34:17about where I'm going to finish.
- 34:21For sure, like, you know, as an athlete,
- 34:23when you're competing, you want to win.
- 34:25But I just hate people telling, oh, yeah,
- 34:27I'm going there to win and, like –
- 34:29You see, I'm going to win.
- 34:30Like, buddy, I don't know if you know,
- 34:31but there's only one person winning.
- 34:33So, like,
- 34:33what happens if you finish second?
- 34:35You're a loser?
- 34:36I mean, no, you're not.
- 34:37Like, second place is not bad, you know?
- 34:40Like, we all won the first place,
- 34:42but it's not happening to everyone.
- 34:44I just feel like you got to
- 34:46have the right mindset,
- 34:47like go there and try to win.
- 34:49But the goal, like you said,
- 34:51is the CrossFit Games.
- 34:52Even if you win open, like Unikowski,
- 34:55and you win quarterfinals,
- 34:57even if you win semifinal,
- 34:59but you get the games, it doesn't win.
- 35:01Well, you know, is he a loser for that?
- 35:04I don't think so.
- 35:05But there's only one thing
- 35:07that really matters,
- 35:08and it's the CrossFit Games.
- 35:10You know, so for me,
- 35:12I just want to qualify for semis.
- 35:13We have a really, really, let's be honest,
- 35:15we are the strongest region.
- 35:18The feel, especially on the men's side,
- 35:20is crazy strong.
- 35:22It's going to be all tight
- 35:23race each workout.
- 35:24So I'm going to do just my
- 35:26best in each workout if I
- 35:28qualify all VIP with that.
- 35:30And for the games, I mean,
- 35:32I definitely want something like a top 10,
- 35:35but
- 35:36I did, I mean,
- 35:37since the beginning of the season,
- 35:39my main goal is to finish my weekend.
- 35:42You know,
- 35:43I've never made it to the last cut,
- 35:46so that's my goal.
- 35:47I want to actually complete
- 35:49and finish my CrossFit Games this year.
- 35:52That's my goal.
- 35:54Just get there on Sunday and
- 35:55do that last workout.
- 35:58So you've trained all year,
- 35:59and what's cool about being
- 36:00in this most stacked
- 36:02division or most stacked
- 36:04region is you're going to
- 36:05test yourself at semis.
- 36:07You're going to know what
- 36:09all that work has done and
- 36:10where you're at because
- 36:11you're going up against
- 36:12Roman and Adler and Luke
- 36:14and all those guys.
- 36:16How important is it to see
- 36:18where you're at this weekend coming up?
- 36:22I mean, it is important and it's not.
- 36:25You know, you can't compare.
- 36:27Like, I do, I mean,
- 36:29I'm lucky because I got Roman and Jeff,
- 36:32you know, two podium guy in my region.
- 36:34So you cannot really ask for
- 36:35better than that.
- 36:36But there's also people like
- 36:38Pat and Justin, you know, and Sam Kwon,
- 36:40like on the, Brett Fikowski, I mean,
- 36:42name it all.
- 36:43You know,
- 36:43like there's a lot of good dudes
- 36:45that are not with us.
- 36:47So it's hard to come by.
- 36:49You can't really compare.
- 36:50I think you just got to be like,
- 36:52Um,
- 36:53you can actually analyze your
- 36:55performance and see if what
- 36:59you're working on has been working.
- 37:01And if it's working well, you're, you get,
- 37:03you did a great job, you know?
- 37:04Um, so you cannot compare, like,
- 37:08I can't compare myself to
- 37:09Jeff Adler on that first
- 37:11event running clean and jerk.
- 37:13Let's be honest.
- 37:14Jeff is freaking strong and
- 37:16we all know that he runs fast.
- 37:18it will be done for me to
- 37:19compare myself with Jeff
- 37:20Adler on that workout.
- 37:21So I can definitely maybe
- 37:24try to target some of the
- 37:25guys that are in the same
- 37:27range of me in the running
- 37:29game and try to beat those guys.
- 37:31And if I beat those guys, well,
- 37:32I did a great job in my
- 37:33offseason because it means the work I did,
- 37:35it did work.
- 37:37So that's how I see it.
- 37:40So, yeah, we'll see.
- 37:43We'll see,
- 37:43but it's going to be interesting,
- 37:45that's for sure,
- 37:45and it's going to be fun.
- 37:47Well, Sam,
- 37:48I want to thank you for doing this.
- 37:50You know,
- 37:50we try to keep these a little
- 37:51shorter because of semifinals,
- 37:53and you guys are prepping for that.
- 37:55As always, you know I'm a big fan.
- 37:57I'll be rooting for you.
- 38:00And I think I'm going to
- 38:01make it down to Knoxville for this.
- 38:03So we'll see you down there.
- 38:05Awesome.
- 38:05Thank you.
- 38:06Thank you for having me today.
- 38:07Yeah,
- 38:08thanks to everybody in the chat for
- 38:09being here.
- 38:10We will see everybody next
- 38:11time on Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 38:14Bye, guys.
