- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We're
- 0:02Speaker 1: joined by Dan Hurley. Of course, a couple of promo
- 0:06Speaker 1: nights coming up in the new year. I want to
- 0:08Speaker 1: tell you about January fourth, Sunday, two o'clock game at Gamble.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Catt will be in. It's going to be a
- 0:14Speaker 1: blue out. We usually get white outs, coach, but this
- 0:16Speaker 1: one's going to be a blue out. So when you
- 0:19Speaker 1: look up in the stands, you're gonna see some dark
- 0:21Speaker 1: color up there. That's gonna be something a little bit different,
- 0:24Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean, and that's always nice and it's
- 0:27Speaker 2: not you know, it's like when you go to certain
- 0:30Speaker 2: places and you know, you just see the school colors,
- 0:34Speaker 2: you know, I think it's it enhances the atmosphere and
- 0:38Speaker 2: the ambiance, and that's a you know, cool thing about
- 0:42Speaker 2: going to you know, when you go to the game
- 0:43Speaker 2: of Kansas, it's like you just see all that, you know,
- 0:46Speaker 2: the Kansas blue or the Kansas white or you know,
- 0:50Speaker 2: it's like and it's it's just it makes the home
- 0:54Speaker 2: game experience, you know, just the ambiance, the feel when
- 0:58Speaker 2: you when you listen to the them and you look
- 1:00Speaker 2: up in the stands and it's like, you know, you
- 1:03Speaker 2: see people you know in the Yukon stuff or in
- 1:06Speaker 2: blue or white or whatever we're doing marketing wise, it's just,
- 1:11Speaker 2: uh yeah, that's what big time atmosphere is, big time arenas.
- 1:16Speaker 2: That's what it looks like.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and it matters. We haven't really talked about that
- 1:21Speaker 1: Kansas game, but one note on that. They're fans are fabulous.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Obviously Yukon fans are crazy good, but they're they're unison
- 1:29Speaker 1: cheering that they do in a game. I mean, I've
- 1:31Speaker 1: never seen anything like that, and I got a chance
- 1:33Speaker 1: to see it now twice in the last couple of years.
- 1:36Speaker 1: That's special, you know what I mean, that's to me
- 1:38Speaker 1: is what college sports is.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Well, when they were champing f Dan Hurley, that was
- 1:42Speaker 2: special for you, Mike, like.
- 1:44Speaker 1: That, No, that was not to you. How about you?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yea.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It's amazing what they do in the stands there. They
- 1:52Speaker 1: seem like they have ten thousand students. I don't think
- 1:54Speaker 1: they do, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Overwhelming almost, Yeah, I mean they've got tradition and obviously
- 2:00Speaker 2: incredible history and uh you know, legends of the game
- 2:05Speaker 2: going back. You know, damn near a hundred years right,
- 2:09Speaker 2: so to the invention of the sport. So yeah, it's
- 2:13Speaker 2: just it's it's a special place to take in a game.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And and uh, you know, for me, I hope I'm
- 2:18Speaker 2: able to get, uh, you know, to this bucket list
- 2:21Speaker 2: of places, you know, before I'm done coaching, to certain
- 2:25Speaker 2: places that you want to be able to go and
- 2:26Speaker 2: coach a game that hopefully will get a chance to
- 2:29Speaker 2: go and coach. Love to be able to go coach
- 2:31Speaker 2: at Kentucky. Love to you know, go coach in Indiana,
- 2:35Speaker 2: you know, love to go coach a game at Cameron Indoor.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Love to go coach a game at Paulie Pavilion or Carolina.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You know, there's places that you just want to coach
- 2:45Speaker 2: before you know, before you're done.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's five great places. I was wondering if
- 2:50Speaker 1: you're going to get to Paulie Pavilion. I was lucky
- 2:53Speaker 1: enough to do a game way back when when I
- 2:54Speaker 1: was with Saint John's and and John Wooden was at
- 2:57Speaker 1: the game and I interviewed John Wooden at halftime. It
- 2:59Speaker 1: was it was just amazing, great place they got to.
- 3:02Speaker 1: You know, they got a great coach with Mick Cronin.
- 3:04Speaker 1: They got it going out there. Yeah, I mean, is
- 3:06Speaker 1: that possible that you kind of could play some of
- 3:08Speaker 1: these teams, whether it's there or at our place in
- 3:11Speaker 1: the next few seasons.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Well, you hope, So, you know, you hope, So you hope.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I put a lot of confidence in my general manager,
- 3:18Speaker 2: Tom Moore, so to make these things happen. So yeah,
- 3:24Speaker 2: I think it's just that it's this has been the
- 3:26Speaker 2: most I think the most interested people have been in
- 3:29Speaker 2: college basketball this time of year, when you're battling the
- 3:32Speaker 2: NFL and you're battling college football. And the reason, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: I think we've had more interest is because we've had
- 3:40Speaker 2: a lot more better games. Ranked teams I think at
- 3:43Speaker 2: all time high in terms of games. So yeah, more
- 3:47Speaker 2: big games.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah. And everyone's doing it too. Arizona, you have, Florida's
- 3:52Speaker 1: playing everybody they can get get their hands on. Illinois
- 3:56Speaker 1: you played them all too. And by you, I mean
- 3:58Speaker 1: it's it seems like every night in college hoop. Now
- 4:01Speaker 1: you got there's a couple of must see games out there.
- 4:04Speaker 2: It is, and it's you know, I think it's good,
- 4:06Speaker 2: it's great, it's great sports. It's you know, because the
- 4:09Speaker 2: games you know, because every game is so important every
- 4:12Speaker 2: every game feels like a playoff game. Every game feels
- 4:15Speaker 2: like game seven because you're you know, you're trying to
- 4:18Speaker 2: position yourself either for regular season championship or try to
- 4:23Speaker 2: get in the NSABA tournament or seeding to the NSLABA tournament.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And every game matters in college. So people love their
- 4:31Speaker 2: sports to be where the participants, you know, where the
- 4:34Speaker 2: outcome of the game is urgent, it's life or death.
- 4:37Speaker 2: It's people giving their most and best, you know, like
- 4:40Speaker 2: it's the last game they'll ever play. I think that's
- 4:43Speaker 2: you know, people don't like to watch sports when the
- 4:45Speaker 2: people playing the sport don't look like they care relative
- 4:49Speaker 2: to their effort whether they win or lose the game.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the beauty. That's the beauty of sports, that's
- 4:54Speaker 1: for sure. One other problem I gotta tell you about, Coach.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You probably know about it. Jersey Night coming up January
- 4:59Speaker 1: tenth at People's Bank to Paul. It's an afternoon game.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You can rep your favorite Husky by wearing a Yukon
- 5:06Speaker 1: basketball jersey or an NBA alumni jersey to the game.
- 5:09Speaker 1: So we're gonna see some stuff in the stands there
- 5:12Speaker 1: I mean, think about all the guys that are in
- 5:14Speaker 1: the NBA, you know, Camp Spencer, Stefan Castle, Donovan Klingen
- 5:19Speaker 1: and you know, the list goes on, and all the
- 5:20Speaker 1: other guys who played before Ray Allen and and uh,
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know, Kemba Walker. I mean, it's gonna be kind
- 5:25Speaker 1: of cool to see some of those old jerseys broken
- 5:27Speaker 1: out in that afternoon game against A Paul.
- 5:30Speaker 2: People gonna have some hard choices to make. You know,
- 5:33Speaker 2: there's gonna be some tough choices. There's you know, do
- 5:36Speaker 2: I go with the uh, you know, we got newer fans,
- 5:40Speaker 2: older fans, you know, do I honor players that you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: we championship players here or the players that you know
- 5:47Speaker 2: went on to the NBA and and and did amazing
- 5:50Speaker 2: things there. It's you know, it'd be interesting to see
- 5:51Speaker 2: where where people's priorities are tough choices.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I like the fact you're wearing the old school
- 5:58Speaker 1: Connecticut jerseys. You're doing that almost every game.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Now?
- 6:01Speaker 1: Is that your call?
- 6:02Speaker 2: Well, I mean, obviously I'm superstitious. So if something's working,
- 6:06Speaker 2: you know, and you win, you know when you win,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and the you know, if it's the if it's the
- 6:10Speaker 2: home whites, with the with the with the Connecticut, the
- 6:12Speaker 2: old school Connecticut Jersey. Yeah, we're gonna ride the uh
- 6:15Speaker 2: the hot hand. Uh that's we That's that's obviously my
- 6:19Speaker 2: m O.
- 6:21Speaker 1: So it's a way to go. It makes sense, all right,
- 6:23Speaker 1: Dan Hurley, well us back in a moment, quick time out.
- 6:26Speaker 1: This is the Ukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on lear
