- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and this is Luna. Luna: Hi everyone! We are picking up right where we left off in the sports hall. Lucas: Exactly. In the last few episodes, we talked about wanting to go to the gym and having a membership. Luna: Right. We said 'Ik wil gaan sporten' and 'Ik heb een abonnement.' But now we are actually inside. Lucas: So let's look at the equipment. The first thing you see is usually the cardio area. Luna: The running machines? Those long ones people walk on while watching TV? Lucas: Yes. That is called 'de loopband'. It means the treadmill. Luna: De loopband. Okay. Let me try that. Lucas: Go ahead. Slowly. Luna: De... loop... band. Lucas: Perfect. De loopband. Listen to the 'oo'. It is a long sound. Like 'loooooong'. Luna: De loopband. Got it. Lucas: If you are walking or jogging on it, you can say: 'Ik loop op de loopband.' Luna: But what if I want to lift weights? What do I call that activity? Lucas: Good question. Lifting weights is strength training. Luna: Strength training? Lucas: In Dutch, it is 'krachttraining'. 'Kracht' means strength. 'Training' is training. Luna: Krachttraining. I like that word. It sounds strong. Lucas: It does. To say you are doing it, use the verb 'doen'—to do. Luna: Doen. So, 'Ik doe aan krachttraining.'? Lucas: Exactly. 'Ik doe aan krachttraining.' This means 'I am doing strength training.' Luna: Ik doe aan krachttraining. Okay. That feels natural. Lucas: Let's repeat it together. Slowly. Ik doe aan... Luna: krachttraining. Lucas: There you go. Ik doe aan krachttraining. Say it again. Luna: Ik doe aan krachttraining. Lucas: Good. Now, imagine you pick up a dumbbell. But it is too heavy for you. Luna: Oh no. I drop it. Immediately. Lucas: You would say: 'Het gewicht is te zwaar.' Luna: Het gewicht is te zwaar. Lucas: Let's break it down. 'Het gewicht' means 'the weight'. Luna: Weight. Yes. And 'is' is 'is'. Lucas: Correct. 'Te zwaar' means 'too heavy'. Luna: Too heavy. Okay. Het gewicht is te zwaar. Lucas: Try it once more. From start to finish. Luna: Het gewicht is te zwaar. Lucas: Nailed it. You sound very professional complaining about weights. Luna: Hey, safety first! But seriously, after lifting, I always feel lost looking for my stuff. Lucas: Where do you put your bag? Luna: In the locker. But in Dutch gyms, they often just say the English word. Lucas: That is true. They use 'locker' a lot. So you ask: 'Waar is de locker?' Luna: Waar is de locker? Lucas: 'Waar' is 'where'. 'Is' is 'is'. 'De locker' is 'the locker'. Luna: Waar is de locker? Simple and effective. Lucas: Very useful. If someone points, they might say: 'Daar.' Over there. Luna: Daar. Okay. Waar is de locker? Daar. Lucas: Now, imagine you finish your weights and decide to cool down. Luna: With a swim? I love the pool. Lucas: Then you say: 'Ik zwem een rondje.' Luna: Ik zwem een rondje. Lucas: 'Ik zwem' means 'I swim'. 'Een rondje' means 'a lap' or 'a round'. Luna: A lap. Okay. Ik zwem een rondje. Lucas: It implies you are going for a bit of exercise, not racing. Luna: Exactly. Just relaxing. Ik zwem een rondje. Lucas: Let's review the whole set quickly. First item? Luna: De loopband. Lucas: Activity? Luna: Ik doe aan krachttraining. Lucas: Problem? Luna: Het gewicht is te zwaar. Lucas: Question? Luna: Waar is de locker? Lucas: Cooldown? Luna: Ik zwem een rondje. Lucas: Excellent. You have all the tools to survive a Dutch gym visit. Luna: I feel ready. Even if I struggle with the weights. Lucas: That is part of the process. Keep practicing these phrases. Luna: Yeah.
