- 1:02Speaker 1: having us. Yeah, of course it's a big week this
- 1:05Speaker 1: week Novo Thursday night celebrating the release of Prolific. I
- 1:12Speaker 1: was I was lucky enough to hear the album. By
- 1:15Speaker 1: the way, album is great. I want to talk to you, Beno, because, like,
- 1:20Speaker 1: I know how artists can get when it comes to
- 1:23Speaker 1: like older music, and you and Nip recorded this album together.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Was it like, because like, did you get demo itis
- 1:31Speaker 1: or did you kind of have like like any sort
- 1:34Speaker 1: of like Yo, I don't kind of sound like that anymore. Man,
- 1:37Speaker 1: I'm better now, Like you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 1:39Speaker 1: was it did you go through that process with any
- 1:41Speaker 1: of this music?
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's it's I feel like I feel like the music
- 1:46Speaker 2: is timeless.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Honestly, Yes, I was telling you because you were like, man,
- 1:49Speaker 1: it's old. I was like, bro, it don't sound like
- 1:51Speaker 1: it sounds.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I'm just point it out, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:54Speaker 3: It was like us just had us on some advanced
- 1:56Speaker 3: timing way back then.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it was elevated. Is time this music? For sure?
- 2:02Speaker 1: For you? This is like an era where you're relatively
- 2:06Speaker 1: unknown in LA right, Like this is before Boso, this
- 2:09Speaker 1: is before death.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Jam, Yeah, before all that shit.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Like do you have like nostalgic feeling listening to some
- 2:15Speaker 1: of the ship like thinking about like dang, like this
- 2:17Speaker 1: was before, like Nip believed in you really before everybody else.
- 2:20Speaker 2: For real, Yeah, listening back.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, It's easy, easier for me
- 2:24Speaker 3: to listen as a listener, you know what I'm saying,
- 2:26Speaker 3: opposed to like critiquing myself tough, you know. So it's like,
- 2:30Speaker 3: I don't know, like I said, it was kind of
- 2:33Speaker 3: ahead of the curve back then, like just the whole
- 2:36Speaker 3: approach to the music. So I kind of hear it
- 2:38Speaker 3: and I respect it more rather than when I just
- 2:40Speaker 3: did it.
- 2:41Speaker 1: For right, right, Sam, I want to know, man, you've
- 2:44Speaker 1: been so careful about how Nip's legacy is used and
- 2:50Speaker 1: more importantly, you know, fans have been asking what's up
- 2:54Speaker 1: with new Nipsey music. I know there's been a lot
- 2:57Speaker 1: of unreleased music. This guy was a studio rat, so
- 2:59Speaker 1: there's you know, I'm sure there's hard drives of stuff.
- 3:04Speaker 1: What made right now the timing to finally let this
- 3:09Speaker 1: stuff go?
- 3:11Speaker 4: I think a lot of people ask, and it's always
- 3:16Speaker 4: number one for me. It was hard for me to
- 3:19Speaker 4: just even listen to music. Yeah, from from Bromn and
- 3:24Speaker 4: let alone to even think about putting music out for
- 3:30Speaker 4: two things like I you know, I would never be
- 3:33Speaker 4: in the family and the team would never be somebody's
- 3:35Speaker 4: just opportunistic trying to just drop something for for financial gain.
- 3:40Speaker 4: And from the outside, it was a lot of like
- 3:44Speaker 4: people who don't have the same responsibility as us that
- 3:47Speaker 4: just was speaking from what they thought was right, like, oh,
- 3:50Speaker 4: it's the perfect time you gotta go now this is
- 3:52Speaker 4: And so that's when it we all kind of stepped
- 3:55Speaker 4: back and I was like, Man, get those people away
- 3:57Speaker 4: from us. We don't even want to think about that.
- 3:59Speaker 4: And then as time passed and I felt it a
- 4:05Speaker 4: little easier to listen to the music. At least it
- 4:09Speaker 4: was always me listening to this project and knowing that
- 4:13Speaker 4: this has to come out. Even for Beino, this has
- 4:15Speaker 4: to come out. You know, this is something that he
- 4:17Speaker 4: did with Hustle and he deserves for it to be out.
- 4:20Speaker 4: And then I know how important this project was to Bro.
- 4:24Speaker 4: I remember he gave it to me to listen to
- 4:27Speaker 4: and was he was proud of it, and I'm like, Bro,
- 4:28Speaker 4: this is dope as fuck.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Bro.
- 4:30Speaker 4: So it was slated to come after Victory Lap and
- 4:34Speaker 4: just hit everybody was talking to the team hit Beino,
- 4:38Speaker 4: hit Tay, and then was like, man, how you guys feel.
- 4:40Speaker 4: They from the jump they were like, Bro, there's no pressure, bro,
- 4:42Speaker 4: whenever you know, we here, whenever you're ready to put
- 4:45Speaker 4: this out. And so they've been patiently waiting, man, just
- 4:48Speaker 4: being super solid. And I just hit them like how
- 4:50Speaker 4: you guys feel? And they're like, man, let's man, let's
- 4:53Speaker 4: do it. So we all got together, same production team
- 4:57Speaker 4: and just been listening to the music and we like,
- 4:59Speaker 4: man's put this shit out, man, And and I feel
- 5:01Speaker 4: it's perfect time. And like you said, man, the music
- 5:03Speaker 4: is timeless, sound like right now, it's elevated. It's hustled
- 5:08Speaker 4: and being no at at A at the finance together
- 5:11Speaker 4: to produce something that I feel they couldn't have done
- 5:14Speaker 4: alone because it's both of them fifty fifty together. Yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 4: putress out, man, and I feel positive about it, happy
- 5:22Speaker 4: about it, and not to belong with it.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Man.
- 5:25Speaker 4: One thing I wanna stress to everybody for me, I
- 5:28Speaker 4: know how important hustle music was and how important his
- 5:33Speaker 4: art form was to him. And he's like meticulous. He
- 5:37Speaker 4: wants to make sure that the sequence is right, the the, the,
- 5:42Speaker 4: the the the each song goes with the project just
- 5:45Speaker 4: not just like picking Lucy's and putting 'em together. And
- 5:48Speaker 4: we would never I would never be a part of
- 5:49Speaker 4: any of that. So this is something he did and
- 5:53Speaker 4: I I we don't have any more of these, like
- 5:55Speaker 4: this is important to me and to whoever buys it
- 5:58Speaker 4: and j even listen to this. This is one of
- 6:00Speaker 4: them things where he was mad scientists along with be
- 6:03Speaker 4: know and like very critical and it's a masterpiece and
- 6:08Speaker 4: I just you know, I'm just happy that it can
- 6:10Speaker 4: come out in the world, will be able to It
- 6:12Speaker 4: ain't about sales, It's not about It's just about, man,
- 6:15Speaker 4: this is a body of work. This is really a
- 6:17Speaker 4: prolific piece of art form and I'm happy that is
- 6:21Speaker 4: here and people are going to be able to, you know,
- 6:23Speaker 4: listen to it.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Also, like if you think back, let me move your
- 6:26Speaker 1: micro lover coursures if you kind of think back, like
- 6:29Speaker 1: you said, it's supposed to come after Victory Lap, Like
- 6:30Speaker 1: what a great contrast, you know what I mean, like
- 6:33Speaker 1: to victory Lap. You know, yes, sir, you said, like
- 6:38Speaker 1: there were because I feel like we see it happen
- 6:41Speaker 1: when someone passes away sometimes man, it'll be like nine
- 6:45Speaker 1: months later whatever major label they were with. Well, like
- 6:48Speaker 1: you got an album with a bunch of features and
- 6:51Speaker 1: you know, it's never cohesive. It doesn't never feel like
- 6:54Speaker 1: well like what that artist actually wanted this music to
- 6:57Speaker 1: come out the way it was. So I think that's
- 6:58Speaker 1: why this is important. If it's like Nipsey wanted this
- 7:02Speaker 1: album out like it wasn't like is that for you?
- 7:06Speaker 1: Was that like a wake up call where you had,
- 7:08Speaker 1: like you said, you had to kind of cut people
- 7:11Speaker 1: out who were a little bit too eager and and
- 7:13Speaker 1: had dollar signs in their eyes when it came to
- 7:15Speaker 1: unrelease Nipsy music.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Yeah, it wasn't as much as cut people out. It
- 7:19Speaker 4: was just put them in their place as far as understanding.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Like I tell people all the time, Man, that's cool
- 7:27Speaker 4: for you to think, but that is unacceptable for us
- 7:30Speaker 4: to think. That's cool for you to do, that's unacceptable
- 7:34Speaker 4: for us to do as the family. As this is
- 7:36Speaker 4: my brother, you know, his friends and people that were close,
- 7:38Speaker 4: So I'm not even mad at him, but y'all can't
- 7:41Speaker 4: run this And thank god, hustle business affairs were like
- 7:45Speaker 4: where they need to be. Ye, So you know, he's
- 7:48Speaker 4: doing joint ventures. He has control of what he does creatively,
- 7:51Speaker 4: and so and you know, thank God man, you know,
- 7:54Speaker 4: Broke put everybody in in a situation financially to where
- 7:59Speaker 4: everything yourself sufficient, clothing and just even the Marathon brand.
- 8:03Speaker 4: And so, you know, because sometimes you know, people that
- 8:08Speaker 4: have children and family and kids, they don't have the
- 8:10Speaker 4: opportunity to kind of just make it about art, so
- 8:13Speaker 4: they have to put it out and sometimes the label,
- 8:15Speaker 4: you know, is looking out for the family and doing
- 8:17Speaker 4: something to keep hopefully keep some money coming in. But
- 8:21Speaker 4: not to be all over the place. We everything was,
- 8:24Speaker 4: you know, thank God in place taking care of and
- 8:27Speaker 4: you know, Hustle got the kids super super right, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 4: real estate, they got things in their name, they got
- 8:32Speaker 4: trust set up, and you know, we're in a position
- 8:36Speaker 4: to just be able to make sure we take this
- 8:40Speaker 4: music and approach it the right way and really try
- 8:47Speaker 4: to do it the way Hustle would have did it,
- 8:48Speaker 4: and for not to be all over the place. For
- 8:50Speaker 4: Hustle the music. And he would always tell me this
- 8:53Speaker 4: and tell us the music was so important. It wasn't
- 8:55Speaker 4: about money. He would say, Man, we're gonna get the money. Man,
- 8:57Speaker 4: My shit gotta be inspirational to people.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Can forget how long we were waiting for Victory Lap.
- 9:02Speaker 4: No facts, facts like Victory.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Lap was a drawn out process to get it, yep,
- 9:09Speaker 1: Like it wasn't like it was like he signed Atlantic
- 9:11Speaker 1: and then we got an album Like nah, I remember
- 9:13Speaker 1: we'd be like, man, it wasn't this Nipsey album coming?
- 9:15Speaker 1: Like I keep hearing about it, Like yeah, no, I
- 9:18Speaker 1: think I think too, man, Like just like you said, Man,
- 9:22Speaker 1: just mourning healing. And then also, you know, the marathon
- 9:29Speaker 1: is a thing. You know, the clothing line is a thing.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Like these are all things that you know you've been
- 9:32Speaker 1: able to with your team, like spin into like a
- 9:35Speaker 1: serious enterprise to honor Nipsey, Like I think about a
- 9:38Speaker 1: marathon Burger, how are you guys at four locations now?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yep?
- 9:43Speaker 1: And that's within two years.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Man, Just been blessed, man, and just trying to stay
- 9:47Speaker 4: stay on it, stay aggressive and take advantage of the opportunity.
- 9:51Speaker 1: That's not easy for people to know. The food game
- 9:53Speaker 1: is not easy, man, for real, and the food is incredible.
- 9:57Speaker 1: You know, I want to know for you did you
- 9:59Speaker 1: were you like your vocals? Were there any records where
- 10:02Speaker 1: you're like yeah, I gotta recut that, like I could
- 10:05Speaker 1: have said that better, or yeah, I mean because you
- 10:08Speaker 1: have you have that, you know obviously you could do that,
- 10:10Speaker 1: like you know.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Like yeah, I mean as as a team, you know
- 10:13Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 10:13Speaker 3: It was it was a couple where it's like, yeah,
- 10:15Speaker 3: we should you know what I'm saying, try to try
- 10:17Speaker 3: to attack this one again.
- 10:19Speaker 2: But for the most part we wanted to leave it.
- 10:21Speaker 2: You know that.
- 10:22Speaker 1: That's dope.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Man, let me say something that could off one thing.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Even with the music, a lot of people obviously coming
- 10:33Speaker 4: to the table, we're listening and we're trying to find things,
- 10:37Speaker 4: and every time, even with production everything, every time we
- 10:41Speaker 4: take a step back as a team and listen to it,
- 10:43Speaker 4: the originals was better than anything. Right, We're like, man, listen, man,
- 10:47Speaker 4: I hate to be that guy. Man put it back,
- 10:49Speaker 4: keep it how it was, man, just and it's you know,
- 10:52Speaker 4: it could be better. And then when we really listen
- 10:54Speaker 4: to it, we like, nah, the way they had it
- 10:57Speaker 4: is perfect, and so that's kind of what the compass
- 11:00Speaker 4: for us.
- 11:00Speaker 1: That's dope. It's like, all right, even if we tweak something, now,
- 11:03Speaker 1: now we got to listen to that. Now, let's listen
- 11:05Speaker 1: to the original, and the original beats it out every time, Yeah.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Every time. So I'm like, man, this is a masterpiece.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Man woo.
- 11:13Speaker 1: You already know, baby are family at odd Socks. They
- 11:16Speaker 1: have been rocking with the bootleg head podcasts since day one,
- 11:19Speaker 1: and listen, man, the Basics have been killing it all right.

- 11:25Speaker 1: tube socks, black white, whatever it is, odd Socks Basics,

- 11:35Speaker 1: only socks in my house. And obviously there's competing brands
- 11:40Speaker 1: that might you might be used to wearing the white
- 11:42Speaker 1: tube socks. Listen, not only are these better, they're more
- 11:46Speaker 1: affordable and they're more comfortable. And when I say more affordable,
- 11:49Speaker 1: I'm not playing. You could get yourself a six pack

- 12:24Speaker 1: odd Socks we need a new box. The basics, The basics,
- 12:27Speaker 1: the basics. All right, odd socks dot com use the
- 12:29Speaker 1: promo code Bootleg, save twenty percent off. Let's get back
- 12:31Speaker 1: into the interview. I'm curious because I'm listening to the
- 12:34Speaker 1: album dope record on there that I think has some
- 12:37Speaker 1: potential radio is the Cardian Ti record. I just want
- 12:40Speaker 1: to know. Now, we had originally heard those vocals pop
- 12:43Speaker 1: up on Vultures, the do It record with ty Kanye
- 12:47Speaker 1: and YG. What was the process of you letting those
- 12:54Speaker 1: vocals go on that project? I thought it was a
- 12:56Speaker 1: big deal because we first of all, I thought that
- 12:59Speaker 1: that record on Vultures was s dope. But for you
- 13:02Speaker 1: to like, what was your thought process? Like you know what? Sure?
- 13:05Speaker 1: You know, big moment for Tie too, by the way,
- 13:08Speaker 1: Vultures won.
- 13:08Speaker 4: You know, facts man, tie is home team. You know,
- 13:12Speaker 4: I gotta keep it honest. We didn't know anything about that.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Oh so you know, when it came out, I was mad,
- 13:20Speaker 4: and I'm like, hold on that it's supposed to be
- 13:22Speaker 4: on this project. And then that record or the or
- 13:25Speaker 4: the one that is on this project was actually supposed
- 13:27Speaker 4: to be on Victory Lab. Hustle was like, I love
- 13:32Speaker 4: this record once again, but it doesn't fit this project
- 13:37Speaker 4: and I feel like it fits this prolific project better.
- 13:41Speaker 4: And so, you know, coming from the side not even
- 13:44Speaker 4: doing you know, I don't, I don't. I'm not an artist.
- 13:46Speaker 4: I don't do music. I'm just I'm like, bro, we
- 13:48Speaker 4: need that for this. This is a radio record. We
- 13:50Speaker 4: need a Victory Lap. That's like it's saying about sales
- 13:53Speaker 4: or anything. This is about the body of work. And
- 13:55Speaker 4: I feel it doesn't fit the project. It fits this
- 13:58Speaker 4: project best. And so when I got it and was
- 14:01Speaker 4: listening to it and after we're doing all this moving forward,
- 14:04Speaker 4: I'm like, damn, Hustle was right once again. But in
- 14:07Speaker 4: the time that we taken to get clearances and do
- 14:10Speaker 4: this and do this, that that comes out, and you know,
- 14:14Speaker 4: it was one of them things. Man, we just chopped
- 14:18Speaker 4: it and we're like, all right, we're gonna, were gonna
- 14:19Speaker 4: go ahead and clear it. Man, it's nothing. I don't
- 14:21Speaker 4: think Kanye got clearances from anybody.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I heard he was kind of running, running wild
- 14:25Speaker 1: when it came to the sample clearances, the features like
- 14:28Speaker 1: paying people, like just everything. But it came out hard.
- 14:33Speaker 4: It was like, we're gonna we clear it. But it
- 14:35Speaker 4: was not a decision because I mean from us, Yeah,
- 14:38Speaker 4: it was like one of the few times we'd heard
- 14:41Speaker 4: new Nipsey vocals since he has passed, so each time
- 14:43Speaker 4: it's been very important.
- 14:45Speaker 1: So it's like, you know, and I thought that. I
- 14:47Speaker 1: thought that was important moment because I do know how
- 14:48Speaker 1: big of a deal it was for for Tie to
- 14:50Speaker 1: have that Vultures project finally come out. So was Cardi
- 14:54Speaker 1: originally on that because I know they were label mates,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you know obviously, so.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Cardy, that's the first time I heard that. And I
- 15:01Speaker 4: remember Hustle like before Victory Life came out obviously, and
- 15:05Speaker 4: then he like, bro she dope. She next, and then
- 15:09Speaker 4: as things kept going and kept going, and then she
- 15:11Speaker 4: just blew up. I always remember Hustle was, you know,
- 15:15Speaker 4: champion her and also was proud as the progress and
- 15:19Speaker 4: as she blew up. And that's why this record is
- 15:21Speaker 4: important to me too, because they did that record together
- 15:25Speaker 4: when they were you know, early early yeah, yeah yeah.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Early label mates. I mean she was coming up tapping
- 15:31Speaker 1: in with a lot of West Coast folks. So I
- 15:34Speaker 1: feel like listening to the album and then the cover,
- 15:38Speaker 1: the photo that you guys used for the cover fits
- 15:41Speaker 1: the album so much. Uh what what was I guess
- 15:45Speaker 1: I'm sure you guys had multiple ways you could have
- 15:48Speaker 1: went with the cover. What was it about that photo?
- 15:51Speaker 4: I think be No knows much more better than me.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the photos.
- 15:56Speaker 3: You know, we used to we used to make the
- 15:58Speaker 3: music and go kick it at the Roosevelt in Hollywood,
- 16:01Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, just to play the music
- 16:04Speaker 3: and catch a voard.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yeah you feel me.
- 16:05Speaker 3: So you know we got photos from actually doing that.
- 16:08Speaker 3: You know, it was only fitting, you know, for the
- 16:10Speaker 3: cover for the project.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I'm sure a lot of people were like surprised, like, oh,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I made the cover. I didn't know me being at
- 16:17Speaker 1: this part of it. Exact prolific cover and.
- 16:20Speaker 4: I think not to be all over the place thing
- 16:22Speaker 4: with that cover too. I remember same thing Hustle sent
- 16:25Speaker 4: that over to the group chat and was like, this
- 16:28Speaker 4: is uh, these are photos. You know, him and JP
- 16:31Speaker 4: were going back and forth with the lighting, you know,
- 16:34Speaker 4: making the bottle be the only pop of color. Yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 4: and just all that. So you know, we're blessed to
- 16:40Speaker 4: be able to even stay true to even his vision
- 16:43Speaker 4: of what the cover, you know, what he wanted the
- 16:44Speaker 4: cover to be.
- 16:46Speaker 1: No, I think it's I think that's what's so cool
- 16:48Speaker 1: about this album is like you said, like, this is
- 16:51Speaker 1: how it would have came out had Nip been here
- 16:53Speaker 1: or not, which I think is like I don't know
- 16:55Speaker 1: how many times I don't I don't know life after
- 16:58Speaker 1: death maybe you know, when Biggie Path. I don't know
- 17:01Speaker 1: how many other times we've had like like this. This
- 17:03Speaker 1: was truly the division, you know. So I think it's incredible.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I wonder stand for you man, you know it, And
- 17:13Speaker 1: it's like losing Nip so horrible, so tragic. I remember,
- 17:18Speaker 1: obviously Kobe passed away after, but I remember trying to
- 17:21Speaker 1: explain to people because I'm from Phoenix and trying to
- 17:24Speaker 1: explain to them like, hey, you like a Kobe passing
- 17:27Speaker 1: away was a big deal, but if you were here,
- 17:31Speaker 1: it felt like Nipsey passing away. It was like it
- 17:35Speaker 1: just felt different. Man, Like I just think back to
- 17:39Speaker 1: you know, I went to Crenshawn's loss and the night
- 17:42Speaker 1: that it happened, and I got high at the gas
- 17:44Speaker 1: station right there next to the Fat Breaker, and you
- 17:48Speaker 1: know the way it impacted the city. I don't think, well,
- 17:51Speaker 1: I don't. I think you had to live here to
- 17:53Speaker 1: kind of know. But uh, it's it sucks to know that,
- 17:58Speaker 1: like nip will never be able to how he impacted
- 18:01Speaker 1: the world, because I think that his passing woke a
- 18:03Speaker 1: lot of people up to the movement. But for you,
- 18:06Speaker 1: it's gotta be kind of surreal to just see the
- 18:10Speaker 1: impact that Nipsey has had after his passing and all
- 18:14Speaker 1: the new fans and all these people with these tats,
- 18:16Speaker 1: like they're like the tattoo thing is crazy. People have
- 18:20Speaker 1: all money in tattoo, the Nipsey tattoo, you know, the
- 18:22Speaker 1: marathon tattoo.
- 18:23Speaker 2: It is.
- 18:23Speaker 1: It is truly like, I don't think we've ever really
- 18:26Speaker 1: seen anything like this in hip hop.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Yeah, man, it to me, man, it just always reminds
- 18:32Speaker 4: me of multiple convos with Bro.
- 18:35Speaker 2: You know, that's my.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Brother and we're in it together, and it's you know,
- 18:45Speaker 4: the politics and trying to get to the money and
- 18:48Speaker 4: ship with the police, and it's just all the struggles
- 18:51Speaker 4: of you know, a black male in LA in the
- 18:56Speaker 4: hood trying to be successful and trying to do something
- 19:01Speaker 4: and the ups and downs of that. And so for me,
- 19:03Speaker 4: it's always like, Bro, come on, man, we gotta get
- 19:05Speaker 4: to this money. Let's do it every time, no matter
- 19:08Speaker 4: that whatever situation we in, Bro, we gonna get the money.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Bro.
- 19:13Speaker 4: This is him telling me, We're gonna get the money, Bro.
- 19:15Speaker 4: But my shit is more important. My shit has to
- 19:17Speaker 4: inspire people, bro, So turning down deals and turning sitting
- 19:21Speaker 4: certain things down. And I never fully understood it then,
- 19:26Speaker 4: But to your point, which seeing the people that he
- 19:30Speaker 4: inspired and seeing the multiple people that lives he's affected
- 19:34Speaker 4: in a positive way and tattoos and just the interviews
- 19:37Speaker 4: and seeing all that, I'd be like, damn, you know,
- 19:39Speaker 4: this is this is what Bro wanted. So it just
- 19:43Speaker 4: makes me feel like like job fulfilled and in his
- 19:47Speaker 4: in his vision, he knew it and he did it
- 19:50Speaker 4: and it feels good man. And I think even you
- 19:53Speaker 4: bringing up the Kobe Bryant thing, it's crazy because you know,
- 19:58Speaker 4: obviously we looked up to Kobe and he was a motivator.
- 20:01Speaker 1: In such a heartbreaking situation.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Man, yeah, man, he we he he was motive. He
- 20:05Speaker 4: was a motiva, motivational person for anybody in the struggle.
- 20:09Speaker 4: And and and showed that hard work, you know, could
- 20:13Speaker 4: turn into massive success. And you know, he did something
- 20:17Speaker 4: at Crenshaw High School that Hustle was a part of.
- 20:22Speaker 4: And and Hustle looked up to to to to his
- 20:26Speaker 4: movement and Mama mentality and all that right, and Hustles
- 20:30Speaker 4: went at the Grammys and and our families at the
- 20:33Speaker 4: Grammys after bro pass and the day Hustle won two
- 20:37Speaker 4: Grammys is the day that Kobe passed. And so that
- 20:41Speaker 4: was eerie and that was crazy, and I I don't
- 20:44Speaker 4: fully understand it, but it just feels like there's a connection,
- 20:48Speaker 4: you know, to to what they both meant to the city.
- 20:50Speaker 4: And even with murals and just the family is just.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I got a mural outside of your brother I saw
- 20:56Speaker 1: walking in Man.
- 20:57Speaker 4: I always loved man. I, you know, not to belong
- 21:01Speaker 4: with it, but to answer your point, man, it just
- 21:03Speaker 4: it never makes sense to me. But I just can
- 21:07Speaker 4: smile and be happy that Hustle. This is what he
- 21:10Speaker 4: wanted to touch people. He wanted to inspire people. He
- 21:14Speaker 4: wanted to inspire people that may have been counted out,
- 21:17Speaker 4: that people felt like were uninspirable, and he did it.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Do you ever, does it still phase you? Because I mean,
- 21:25Speaker 1: the tattoo thing is it is It is like if
- 21:28Speaker 1: you're in La or on the West Coast and like
- 21:31Speaker 1: you see somebody with like a sleeve and they're like,
- 21:33Speaker 1: I don't know under thirty, there's like a good chance
- 21:36Speaker 1: if they're a hip hop like they got the Like,
- 21:38Speaker 1: does it phase you when you because you got to
- 21:39Speaker 1: be out and see that all the time.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I think it's just what you said.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Man.
- 21:44Speaker 4: It just reminds me, man every time. I be like, man, Like,
- 21:47Speaker 4: we were filming the video and the white dude on
- 21:49Speaker 4: the surfboard and he had the all money in on
- 21:51Speaker 4: the surfboard and he told me about the time he
- 21:53Speaker 4: seen Hustle at the Laker game and was was, you know,
- 21:56Speaker 4: saying the lyric and Hustle shot at him out and
- 21:59Speaker 4: got them a video with him and the Valets we shooting.
- 22:02Speaker 4: We shoot another video at the Roosevelt and the Valet like, man,
- 22:05Speaker 4: and your brother, you know, he knows me at this
- 22:08Speaker 4: hotel and I know him at the Marriott Hotel. I
- 22:10Speaker 4: was in the Keys to the City, so us will
- 22:11Speaker 4: touched the city in so many ways that aren't televised.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And yeah, I always tell people that I got fired
- 22:21Speaker 1: from my radio job in twenty thirteen and that was
- 22:26Speaker 1: pretty fucked up about it. And your brother was he
- 22:30Speaker 1: DM me on Twitter and he was like, yo, man,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I heard what happened. Come out to LA.
- 22:35Speaker 2: This was.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Around the time Crenshaw was dropping one hundred dollars mixtape,
- 22:43Speaker 1: so this was like that like a week before and
- 22:45Speaker 1: he's like, we'll do an interview, you know, Like so
- 22:48Speaker 1: I pulled up and I forget what studio he was at.
- 22:54Speaker 1: JP was probably like twelve years old at the time
- 22:56Speaker 1: because JP was around, and we do it. We do
- 22:59Speaker 1: it interview. Then he takes me over to the store
- 23:02Speaker 1: and like literally gave me like he's like, just grab whatever.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I had three black trash backs full of Crenshaw. Sure, nope, nope,
- 23:11Speaker 1: And then I ended up going to the I forget
- 23:13Speaker 1: there was the release There was like a little release
- 23:15Speaker 1: function on Fairfact at YEP, and uh yeah, dude, just
- 23:21Speaker 1: such a fucking great guy. And this was before I
- 23:23Speaker 1: lived in La. I was you know what he had
- 23:25Speaker 1: known me because he had wrapped on my show in
- 23:27Speaker 1: Idaho in two thousand and nine when he was opening
- 23:30Speaker 1: up for Games Damn Classic, Yeah, and then again in Vegas.
- 23:34Speaker 1: But yeah, he was always just like just such a
- 23:36Speaker 1: big hearted dude man. For you be know, like I
- 23:39Speaker 1: know that, Like it's it's gotta be kind of cool
- 23:43Speaker 1: to like prove Nipsey rite a lot, because brother, you
- 23:46Speaker 1: are You've You've turned into an LA legend. Bro, Like
- 23:50Speaker 1: when it comes to the anthems, the six tape shit,
- 23:53Speaker 1: I mean for you, like, how often do you still
- 23:56Speaker 1: kind of pull inspiration from your relationship with it?
- 24:00Speaker 2: Shit? Man, it's that man, possible not to.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Yeah, every situation inside music, outside of everyday life, it's all.
- 24:08Speaker 2: It's all inspiration from that.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Is there any particular record that you kind of
- 24:15Speaker 1: can talk about like a more memorable session, because I'm
- 24:20Speaker 1: sure you guys had some fun times in this year.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Was there was there was there a session in particular
- 24:23Speaker 1: form one of these songs that you reflect.
- 24:25Speaker 3: On, man, you know, it's stories about all of them.
- 24:28Speaker 3: But we was talking about situation.
- 24:31Speaker 1: That's my joint, that's my favorite song.
- 24:33Speaker 2: That's my ship too. Brouh. That's when where it was.
- 24:36Speaker 3: It was dope to really go back and forth with it,
- 24:39Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying in the verse, and yeah, it.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Was it was you know, that was a dope session
- 24:44Speaker 2: for me. Like just that process.
- 24:46Speaker 3: It's like we ain't really talking, you know, we ain't
- 24:48Speaker 3: talking about what we finnsh do. It's like he going
- 24:50Speaker 3: to booth lay some shit. I'm already you know, plotting,
- 24:54Speaker 3: and he come out out going to booth. You know
- 24:55Speaker 3: what I'm saying. We ain't really holler at each other
- 24:57Speaker 3: until after and were listening to that shit type. You know.
- 25:00Speaker 1: So you guys had already plotted the name Prolific for this.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Originally we had a different name.
- 25:07Speaker 3: It was single for the summer, okay, but you know,
- 25:09Speaker 3: just as a team and as a collective, we feel like,
- 25:11Speaker 3: you know, we all came together trying to you know
- 25:15Speaker 3: what I'm saying, plot and vote, but Prolific was just
- 25:19Speaker 3: you know the most fitting.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I mean, listen, there's prolific tattoos all over the place.
- 25:23Speaker 1: It's a word there's anonymous with because of his tattoos
- 25:27Speaker 1: exactly I can imagine, and then you guys really turned
- 25:30Speaker 1: it into a brand. You know what I'm saying, it's
- 25:34Speaker 1: kind of crazy, Like Sam, for you, can you speak
- 25:37Speaker 1: to just I feel like in the last seven years,
- 25:42Speaker 1: we've been able to watch like you know, I remember
- 25:47Speaker 1: when you guys did the grand opening of the first
- 25:49Speaker 1: smart store.
- 25:51Speaker 2: It was like seventeen or eighteen, I forget when it was.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And you've been able to take this marathon brand and
- 26:01Speaker 1: just the business of the marathon into heights that you know,
- 26:05Speaker 1: I'm sure Nipsey would be proud of you know what
- 26:07Speaker 1: I'm saying. But for you, like you've you've kind of
- 26:11Speaker 1: always been behind the scenes, I think purposefully. That's why
- 26:14Speaker 1: I think it was so important, you know, your first
- 26:15Speaker 1: interview being with Big Boy because Big is you know,
- 26:18Speaker 1: voice of La and I also thought it was it
- 26:20Speaker 1: was just it just felt right. But for you, like,
- 26:24Speaker 1: can you kind of talk to like some of this
- 26:26Speaker 1: stuff you probably are learning on the go, you know
- 26:30Speaker 1: what I'm saying, Like you're you're you, but you've grown
- 26:32Speaker 1: the marathon into such an enterprise from where it was.
- 26:38Speaker 1: But I mean, I'm sure we don't see the you know,
- 26:42Speaker 1: the failures in the in the stress, Like what has
- 26:44Speaker 1: it been like for you just kind of picking up
- 26:47Speaker 1: the pieces and and building a real empire around your guys' brand.
- 26:53Speaker 4: I think the key for me to keep even going
- 27:01Speaker 4: and even believing in the brand is coming from Hustle
- 27:06Speaker 4: when he first educated me on the Marathon brand or
- 27:10Speaker 4: the Marathon concept, when he was telling me he was
- 27:14Speaker 4: gonna put the mixtape out, and just him being so
- 27:19Speaker 4: sharp and educating himself and reading books and always wanting
- 27:22Speaker 4: to pour a knowledge into us and make me believe that, oh,
- 27:27Speaker 4: all right, this can actually be done. It come from Hustle,
- 27:30Speaker 4: from the music and him creating his record label and saying, hey, bro,
- 27:33Speaker 4: I want I wanna involve you in it. This is
- 27:34Speaker 4: what we're gonna do. This is how you know Jay
- 27:38Speaker 4: did with Rockefeller, this is how Master P did, This
- 27:40Speaker 4: is how Baby and them did, and they're going to
- 27:43Speaker 4: get the distribution. And watching him and made me believe like, damn,
- 27:46Speaker 4: we could really actually do this. And then when he
- 27:50Speaker 4: changed the name from his mixtapes, see like, man, I'm
- 27:52Speaker 4: done with the Bullets volumes. I want to go. My
- 27:54Speaker 4: next one was gonna be called Marathon. I didn't understand
- 27:57Speaker 4: it I'm like, marathon, Nah, we gonna run bullets. Ain't
- 27:59Speaker 4: got no names to a volume ten hot. This thing
- 28:02Speaker 4: on the street. What you're talking about, we got it.
- 28:04Speaker 4: He like, nah, bro, I don't like the energy. I'm like,
- 28:07Speaker 4: what do you mean? We win in right now? And
- 28:10Speaker 4: that's another thing that didn't matter, Like, I don't like
- 28:12Speaker 4: the energy at these shows, everybody come and testing it.
- 28:15Speaker 4: We're jumping off the stage, fighting with everybody. I want
- 28:18Speaker 4: the energy different. And I didn't understand it. But he
- 28:21Speaker 4: told me about the marathon concept. He gave me the music,
- 28:25Speaker 4: and I'm like, oh my god, this is amazing. And
- 28:28Speaker 4: once it dropped, you know, with the blink of an eye, man,
- 28:32Speaker 4: the energy changed all the shows. Now you got people
- 28:34Speaker 4: walking up with resumes, people saying how inspired they are.
- 28:38Speaker 4: You got niggas from every hood coming now, tattoos on
- 28:41Speaker 4: them with the all money in with the marathon, and
- 28:44Speaker 4: you just made something that transcends all the stereotypes, that
- 28:48Speaker 4: transcends all the dumb shit that we got to deal
- 28:52Speaker 4: with out here in La with Gang Bang and just
- 28:54Speaker 4: everybody from every hood, people that looked like him, that
- 28:57Speaker 4: came from the same situations as him, whether they were
- 29:00Speaker 4: on different blocks or neighborhoods made them feel like, man,
- 29:04Speaker 4: if Hustle did it, we could do it. Look what
- 29:06Speaker 4: Hustle did in his neighborhood. Look what he did with
- 29:08Speaker 4: his homies. Look how they enterprising around legit business with
- 29:13Speaker 4: record labels and with clothing stores. And so he was
- 29:17Speaker 4: the blueprint and not to be all older place. He
- 29:21Speaker 4: made me believe that he could be done. And he
- 29:23Speaker 4: had conversations with me about, Man, this marathon brand gonna
- 29:26Speaker 4: be big, bro, It's gonna be our biggest thing. You know,
- 29:28Speaker 4: we could be you know, as a brand dealing with
- 29:32Speaker 4: all lifestyle music, films, food, fashion. Yeah, and just every
- 29:39Speaker 4: step whether it gets hard or not. I just always
- 29:42Speaker 4: remember when we was across the street with tables selling
- 29:45Speaker 4: t shirts and to where the opportunity is now. It's
- 29:51Speaker 4: just about belief and hard work and Hustle laying the
- 29:54Speaker 4: blueprint down.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I think too, it's like outside of Snoop, the modern
- 29:59Speaker 1: version of like because if you're from La, you're from
- 30:03Speaker 1: a neighborhood, you know, there is like a burden of
- 30:05Speaker 1: like being who you are, who you're supposed to be
- 30:07Speaker 1: to your homies, to your area, etc. But also like
- 30:12Speaker 1: there is a bit of a hindrance in terms of
- 30:15Speaker 1: like evolving out of that, you know what I'm saying,
- 30:18Speaker 1: And he did it in such a magnificent way where
- 30:20Speaker 1: it was like, you know, like you said, it just
- 30:23Speaker 1: cut through on a different level nationwide, you know.
- 30:27Speaker 4: And I cut through and not to be all over
- 30:29Speaker 4: the places it cut through, because Hustle was genuine about, Hey,
- 30:34Speaker 4: we are where we're from, but if you're a real nigga,
- 30:36Speaker 4: come fuck with us regardless. And my shit is here
- 30:39Speaker 4: to motivate y'all. Also, don't think that I'm not doing
- 30:43Speaker 4: this to motivate y'all because we all in the same
- 30:45Speaker 4: fucked up shit when we really take a step back.
- 30:48Speaker 4: So I'm here to motivate you guys. And I feel
- 30:50Speaker 4: like no matter where you're from, everybody appreciate it and
- 30:55Speaker 4: knows that, and that's why they stand up for Bro,
- 30:57Speaker 4: and they're like, man, listen, Bro, you know, Bro, is
- 31:00Speaker 4: the is the truth and the motivation for for for us.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you, like I s like I said earlier, you
- 31:05Speaker 1: kind of have done a pretty good job of staying
- 31:07Speaker 1: out of the way in terms of you know, I
- 31:09Speaker 1: don't think you're on Instagram, are you on Instagram. Stand mm,
- 31:13Speaker 1: but I feel like you also can like serve as
- 31:15Speaker 1: like a similar motivation to a lot of a lot
- 31:17Speaker 1: of people. Is is there a reason why you kind
- 31:20Speaker 1: of like eased into getting in front of the camera
- 31:24Speaker 1: and doing media and stuff.
- 31:26Speaker 4: And yeah, I think I got to tell the team
- 31:30Speaker 4: if if I'm if I, if I'm needed, you know
- 31:34Speaker 4: what I mean to accomplish the goal of the brand
- 31:38Speaker 4: and and what we're doing, then I gotta be front
- 31:40Speaker 4: and center, regardless if I if I feel comfortable, if
- 31:44Speaker 4: I like it or not. And so in certain things
- 31:47Speaker 4: as far as with getting this documentary for my brother,
- 31:51Speaker 4: getting people aware, trying to get investors and and things done,
- 31:56Speaker 4: like I gotta be front center. And when it comes
- 31:58Speaker 4: to Marathon berger or marathon clothing and even the album,
- 32:02Speaker 4: you know, anything that being on needs me to uh
- 32:06Speaker 4: help promo, I'm I'm here, anything that our team needs,
- 32:09Speaker 4: I'm here.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I gotta be.
- 32:10Speaker 4: So it's not it's not even a question.
- 32:13Speaker 1: But you know, when you go into a show like Thursday
- 32:15Speaker 1: Night Novo, right, it's gotta be like a celebration. But
- 32:19Speaker 1: also Nip's not here, so I'm assuming you're curating back
- 32:25Speaker 1: call like hey, l we gotta extra so and so
- 32:27Speaker 1: pulls up. So what is the Can you kind of
- 32:29Speaker 1: give us an idea of like what we expect Thursday?
- 32:31Speaker 2: Man, It's it's it's an experience.
- 32:33Speaker 3: So you know, I don't wanna spoil anything, but you
- 32:36Speaker 3: can you could definitely expect an experience.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Some some special guests, for sure. It's that's gotta also
- 32:43Speaker 1: kind of be think you feel any pressure, cause that's
- 32:45Speaker 1: like that's a that's a big I mean it's a
- 32:48Speaker 1: big deal.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Of course for sure.
- 32:51Speaker 3: But you know, like I said, I uh, I carry
- 32:54Speaker 3: I carry this shit as an obligation. So I'm saying
- 32:57Speaker 3: most important to me is just do my best for bro.
- 33:00Speaker 1: And this project is fully independent. Who's the partner on them?
- 33:06Speaker 4: It's Atlantic?
- 33:06Speaker 1: Atlantic?
- 33:07Speaker 4: Okay, yep, Atlantic. We we were blessed man. Atlantic came
- 33:12Speaker 4: in and was like I think we were. We had
- 33:15Speaker 4: a situation, a good situation with Interscope. Yeah ready, and
- 33:20Speaker 4: Atlantic got wind of it and they came in and
- 33:23Speaker 4: I believe through uh, through Christmas and through holiday everything
- 33:28Speaker 4: shut down. They got the lawyers on with the lawyers
- 33:32Speaker 4: for like three days straight NonStop and got the deal
- 33:35Speaker 4: done wow, and wired the money wow. And it really
- 33:39Speaker 4: snatched the deal from uh from Innerscope and you know
- 33:43Speaker 4: their their take on it was like, man, we are
- 33:45Speaker 4: in the nipsey hustle business, so you know we want
- 33:48Speaker 4: any in the house.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Yep, keep it all in the house man, Yep you
- 33:51Speaker 1: already know Arizona Man. The blutleg Head podcast brought to
- 33:54Speaker 1: you by our partners at Raffie Law Group. Now we
- 33:57Speaker 1: love Raffie Law Group Man, Arizona's premier personal injury firm.
- 34:01Speaker 1: What I love about Raffi is they're so dependable, so trustworthy,
- 34:04Speaker 1: and they get the job done. They've helped over seventy
- 34:06Speaker 1: thousand Arizonans. I know you see the billboards everywhere. I
- 34:11Speaker 1: know you can't avoid seeing a man Raffi's face everywhere.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But it's because he is the absolute best. All right.
- 34:16Speaker 1: He's helping my wife get through an accident situation, got
- 34:20Speaker 1: her paid, My mother in law, same situation. My best
- 34:23Speaker 1: friend's parents just use Raffi and got a big payday.
- 34:27Speaker 1: So make sure if you get into an accident, if
- 34:29Speaker 1: you need help, all right, it could be an accident,
- 34:31Speaker 1: it could be a slip and fall, it could be
- 34:32Speaker 1: any personal injury situation. They're gonna take care of it
- 34:36Speaker 1: all right. All you gotta do is call Raffi. You
- 34:38Speaker 1: know what it is, man, Call Raffi six two three
- 34:40Speaker 1: three eight eight four three three three Raffi Law Group,
- 34:44Speaker 1: the only personal injury law firm that we will ever
- 34:47Speaker 1: rock with right here on the Blue leg Head Podcast.
- 34:50Speaker 1: It's also kind of crazy too, because if you like,
- 34:52Speaker 1: go back to like Victory La. Victory Lap was one
- 34:54Speaker 1: of those albums that like it was like a slow burn,
- 34:58Speaker 1: like it's a marathon, yep, and it's crazy, like do
- 35:04Speaker 1: you reflect because like you said, it's it's it was
- 35:06Speaker 1: harder to listen to the unreleased stuff for you. What
- 35:10Speaker 1: about like just do you reflect on Nipsey's catalog a lot?
- 35:13Speaker 1: Like will you like go back and revisit Victory Lap
- 35:16Speaker 1: and you know, Mailbox Money and some of that stuffy.
- 35:20Speaker 4: And before I answer that, I gotta mention it's OTB. Yeah,
- 35:25Speaker 4: it's all money in. And then there's a joint venture
- 35:27Speaker 4: with Atlantic God just so it's clear of course.
- 35:30Speaker 2: And then.
- 35:32Speaker 4: But when you bring up catalog, man, just listening to everything,
- 35:41Speaker 4: and as you said, once I continue and listen, the
- 35:44Speaker 4: more and listen more. Always amaze me.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Man.
- 35:45Speaker 4: That hustle. Everything that Hustle talks about is true everything
- 35:51Speaker 4: I can reflect on, Like, damn, that's crazy. I remember
- 35:54Speaker 4: when that happened, and and I just always wonder, like, man,
- 35:59Speaker 4: I wonder, is that is that a lot of artists
- 36:02Speaker 4: or is this just like unique because people ask and
- 36:05Speaker 4: be like, that's really happened. Let me get a date.
- 36:07Speaker 4: This is what he's talking about. And so it's just
- 36:10Speaker 4: crazy hearing things and watching the things happen, and even
- 36:16Speaker 4: he was very ahead of ahead of his time on
- 36:21Speaker 4: technology and oh gods, being disruptive and just watching all
- 36:27Speaker 4: this stuff happen in real time, even with AI, you know,
- 36:30Speaker 4: and just everything.
- 36:32Speaker 1: First, guy, remember to really embrace crypto on a high
- 36:35Speaker 1: level hustle.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Yeah, yep, yep. He always preached, Man, listen, technology is
- 36:41Speaker 4: gonna always bring opportunity, So don't fight technology. Embrace it
- 36:47Speaker 4: and learn how to use it with integrity, and you
- 36:51Speaker 4: know you'll win. If not, you're gonna get you're gonna
- 36:53Speaker 4: get left behind.
- 36:56Speaker 1: No for sure. Nah. I think the other thing I
- 36:58Speaker 1: was gonna say was like, it's it's crazy, cause I
- 37:02Speaker 1: remember when I wouldn't say he first sarted with Johnny
- 37:07Speaker 1: Shipes and and the cinematic situation. But I remember Charlemagne
- 37:10Speaker 1: the God put me on the bullets Ain't Got No
- 37:12Speaker 1: Names Volume one class when he was in Philadelphia doing radio,
- 37:17Speaker 1: and uh, from there, I was just a fan. But
- 37:19Speaker 1: it's crazy to think like all of the errors of
- 37:22Speaker 1: his career, because there was the era where he had
- 37:25Speaker 1: like Hustle in the House as a single, and then
- 37:28Speaker 1: fast forward a little there's the big radio single with
- 37:33Speaker 1: Lloyd Feeling Myself, and then he gets out of his
- 37:36Speaker 1: deal and then he goes on this prolific mixtape run
- 37:39Speaker 1: like it. It's just it. There were so many eras
- 37:43Speaker 1: to the Nipsey like hip hop side, Like you know,
- 37:46Speaker 1: so I like sometimes I like every once in a while,
- 37:48Speaker 1: I'll be like, yeah, let me roll the windows up.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Was so crazy, you know what I'm saying, Like for you, like,
- 37:55Speaker 1: do you remember when Nipsey started, Cause I feel like
- 37:58Speaker 1: every artist who be from a certain background, like there's
- 38:02Speaker 1: always that like one foot in, one foot out type
- 38:04Speaker 1: of situation before you kind of know if this shit's
- 38:06Speaker 1: really going to work out. Do you remember when it
- 38:08Speaker 1: kind of started to click for him that like, all right,
- 38:09Speaker 1: we gotta this shit is a real opportunity.
- 38:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Hustle was always somebody who was going
- 38:18Speaker 4: to be all in. So he believed, and he put
- 38:26Speaker 4: a thousand percent of his efforts in and his time in,
- 38:29Speaker 4: and I think he motivated us to also believe, like, man,
- 38:33Speaker 4: maybe this can happen. And every win compounded, every small win, everything,
- 38:39Speaker 4: and the fact that he was so dope and so talented.
- 38:41Speaker 4: I feel like it just made people be like, all right, man,
- 38:45Speaker 4: maybe you know this is a long shot, but maybe
- 38:47Speaker 4: maybe we could do this. Maybe Bro could get a situation.
- 38:52Speaker 4: And I think to your point, when Shipes came out
- 38:58Speaker 4: here man and was it in the hood in front
- 39:02Speaker 4: of slaws and T's and saw Bro, he had already
- 39:06Speaker 4: listened to the music. But when he saw Hustle in
- 39:08Speaker 4: his environment and seeing you know, hunting homies in the
- 39:11Speaker 4: front of the of the shop and seeing what was
- 39:14Speaker 4: going on, he lost it. And from that point he
- 39:21Speaker 4: was a thousand percent in on making sure that Hustle
- 39:24Speaker 4: got a situation. And you know, I always say we
- 39:26Speaker 4: appreciate Shapes so much because he believed in Hustle so much.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Him and Hustle his friends, they laughed, joke, talk shit
- 39:32Speaker 4: like he was somebody that was like holding the flag
- 39:36Speaker 4: for Hustle, and he knew how how dope Hustle was.
- 39:39Speaker 4: So once he got Hustle a situation with Sony through
- 39:44Speaker 4: his thro through shipe some label Cinematic, Shipes had a
- 39:47Speaker 4: lot of success with a big crip yep and and
- 39:52Speaker 4: at this point he had like massive success with Sean Kingston.
- 39:56Speaker 4: And so Charlie Walk was the or uh A president
- 40:01Speaker 4: at UH at Sony Epic, and he told him, lay,
- 40:05Speaker 4: you can you you have another situation, you can sign,
- 40:07Speaker 4: you can sign another artist, whatever you wanna do. And
- 40:09Speaker 4: so Shipes used that situation and signed Hustle and he
- 40:14Speaker 4: believed in him. He brought Hustle to New York, and
- 40:18Speaker 4: Hustle was in New York doing the mixtapes recording. New
- 40:21Speaker 4: York embraced him, and he blew up out there with
- 40:24Speaker 4: the mixtapes, came out here with the mixtapes, and just
- 40:26Speaker 4: back and forth from lad New York. You know, I
- 40:29Speaker 4: was in prison, I was getting the mail, I was
- 40:31Speaker 4: hearing on on on on the Cyrus radio.
- 40:34Speaker 2: I was on the phone.
- 40:36Speaker 4: And that's when we really understood, like this shit is real.
- 40:41Speaker 1: He and the blog era gone crazy.
- 40:43Speaker 4: Man, The The World Star Hip Hop, The Making of
- 40:46Speaker 4: a Star, hoos s Superstar, and and I remember, man,
- 40:50Speaker 4: I hadn't heard any of the new music, and I
- 40:54Speaker 4: was in like a uh uh, what's it called? Atlanto
- 40:58Speaker 4: CCF prison Lo lo L low points, getting ready to
- 41:01Speaker 4: go home. I probably had like six months left.
- 41:04Speaker 1: You know.
- 41:04Speaker 4: We got the TV. We could watch the TV, and
- 41:06Speaker 4: we got the dorm and all the beds in the back.
- 41:09Speaker 4: So at night it's only like five or six people,
- 41:12Speaker 4: probably like two blacks, two Mexicans, and one white boy.
- 41:16Speaker 4: We'll be down there watching TV. And the Hustle in
- 41:21Speaker 4: the House video came on. And I hadn't been on
- 41:24Speaker 4: the phone. I don't know anything about it, so I
- 41:26Speaker 4: couldn't believe it. I'm like, hold on, this is BRO video.
- 41:28Speaker 4: So I'm yelling, I'm like Bro to the homie DT.
- 41:31Speaker 4: I'm like DT hustle video on. I'm screaming, and it
- 41:35Speaker 4: came on. I'm glued to it, and that'sh I got goosebumps.
- 41:38Speaker 4: I just couldn't believe it. And I look up. The
- 41:41Speaker 4: riot gear came in and everybody came in, so I'm like, well,
- 41:44Speaker 4: hold on, what the fuck is going on? I turn around.
- 41:46Speaker 4: The whole dorm is standing up, two hundred people watching
- 41:50Speaker 4: over the balcony. They thought it was gonna be a riot. Wow,
- 41:54Speaker 4: it was silent. Everybody after that, and that dorm was
- 41:59Speaker 4: a believer and we knew something big was coming because
- 42:02Speaker 4: that video was so epic and Hustle lyrics and just everybody.
- 42:06Speaker 4: It moved everybody. And at that point that was the
- 42:09Speaker 4: easiest little time I did. I was kicking my feet
- 42:11Speaker 4: up like when I get out of his own you know, yep.
- 42:15Speaker 4: But for me, that was the that was the time
- 42:17Speaker 4: when all the stuff Hustle talked about and all the
- 42:20Speaker 4: times were putting up posters and you know, doing the
- 42:23Speaker 4: legal ship to finance the campaign, and you know, that
- 42:27Speaker 4: was the time I knew like, oh it's out of here. Yeah.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Hey, I always was curious. You always would hear rumors,
- 42:33Speaker 1: well not rumors, I mean Rick Ross verified it, but
- 42:36Speaker 1: there was like this that m mg era was very,
- 42:38Speaker 1: very prolific to use the word. And I remember around
- 42:45Speaker 1: that blog era time Ross was trying to sign Whiz.
- 42:49Speaker 1: He was trying to sign Don Kennedy and he always
- 42:51Speaker 1: said he tried his shot getting nipsy yep. Facts, Uh
- 42:56Speaker 1: do you was that was there ever, Like, do you
- 42:58Speaker 1: remember what like those talks and like, because obviously Nip's
- 43:01Speaker 1: always giving it up to Ross. They've always had a
- 43:02Speaker 1: great relationship musically and personally. But was it was that
- 43:05Speaker 1: ever a thought or was it always just like we're pushing.
- 43:08Speaker 4: NA for me and my team just speak speaking bluntly.
- 43:11Speaker 4: I think Hustle was communicating with Ross. We always respected
- 43:15Speaker 4: and appreciated Ross, because I don't know if he knew
- 43:17Speaker 4: or if anybody know at that point, you know, it
- 43:20Speaker 4: was very crucial. We into it with the homies, We
- 43:23Speaker 4: frontline at the shop, we get into you know, Melee's
- 43:26Speaker 4: and shootouts. I'm getting arrested. It's like serious, right, and
- 43:30Speaker 4: you know we got spots in the hood. We got
- 43:32Speaker 4: to finance this campaign of trying to push the music
- 43:36Speaker 4: for it, but also trying to protect and make sure
- 43:39Speaker 4: we on deck. Just speaking blunt so the fact that
- 43:42Speaker 4: Ross was there and making sure Hustle was on features
- 43:46Speaker 4: with Ross and bringing things and speaking about him, that
- 43:50Speaker 4: helped tremendously. And then he even had opportunities come where,
- 43:54Speaker 4: like you say, there was a financial opportunity to sign
- 43:57Speaker 4: to the label, and Hustle went back and forth with Ross,
- 44:01Speaker 4: and Ross at one point was like, look, bro, whatever
- 44:04Speaker 4: you want, I can get it done now, and brought
- 44:07Speaker 4: a situation that was massive and would have trained would
- 44:11Speaker 4: have changed the the dynamic as far as financial. I'm like, bro,
- 44:16Speaker 4: we need to get this chili because you know we
- 44:19Speaker 4: we we we own right now is crucial. We fighting
- 44:22Speaker 4: cases all type of ship and hustle. You know. It
- 44:28Speaker 4: was like, nah, man, I appreciate the opportunity, I know
- 44:33Speaker 4: what it could do, but when we finally do this,
- 44:37Speaker 4: it gotta be all money in. And he like, I gotta,
- 44:39Speaker 4: I gotta you guys talking about me, my cousin Adam
- 44:43Speaker 4: and fast. He like, you guys gotta be responsible for
- 44:47Speaker 4: taking this nipsey hustle thing to the to the next
- 44:50Speaker 4: level or to the next situation. And I can't, even
- 44:53Speaker 4: though we needed it, can't. It can't be Ross situation
- 44:58Speaker 4: that does that. It gotta be us. And so I
- 45:00Speaker 4: didn't understand that either, and our team like, look, bro,
- 45:03Speaker 4: thank you.
- 45:03Speaker 1: But because at that time, Meek's going crazy. So I mean,
- 45:06Speaker 1: I think already been on one of the self maids
- 45:08Speaker 1: by then.
- 45:09Speaker 4: You know, Ross put him on and put him on
- 45:10Speaker 4: the self made and we knew what the opportunity would
- 45:13Speaker 4: have done. But you know, Hustle's the visionary man. He's like, nah, man,
- 45:17Speaker 4: I can't take that away from y'all as CEOs and
- 45:21Speaker 4: as you know label founders, and it gotta be all
- 45:25Speaker 4: money in and you know he he held it down
- 45:29Speaker 4: and and eventually we got that situation direct all money
- 45:33Speaker 4: in in Atlantic and you know he's had conbos with
- 45:37Speaker 4: Ross and explained exactly that, and Ross like, nah, bro,
- 45:39Speaker 4: I understand it, and you know it just even the
- 45:43Speaker 4: talks and even Ross being vocal about wanting to sign Hustle,
- 45:48Speaker 4: I feel like just helped helped push this thing along.
- 45:51Speaker 4: And you know we were always appreciative of it. But
- 45:53Speaker 4: to answer the question, yeah, it was another one of
- 45:56Speaker 4: those things that Hussele just moved from his heart and
- 45:59Speaker 4: what he felt. And it was in a situation where
- 46:02Speaker 4: it was a lot on the line.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and would and nobody would have blamed him or
- 46:06Speaker 1: they would have been like, yeah, yep, I think you know,
- 46:09Speaker 1: I think we had similar thoughts. He was like, we
- 46:10Speaker 1: got Taylor game. Tell me how important of a because
- 46:16Speaker 1: I look back at like certain moments that changed and
- 46:20Speaker 1: influenced the way the music business is practiced, and I
- 46:24Speaker 1: think Nipsey read the book Contagious and read about this
- 46:29Speaker 1: guy was charging I think one hundred dollars for a
- 46:31Speaker 1: fairly cheese steak or.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Something like that.
- 46:32Speaker 1: I got the book up there somewhere, and he comes
- 46:38Speaker 1: up with this idea, you know, proud to pay. And
- 46:44Speaker 1: it's such a foreign idea at the time, because I
- 46:46Speaker 1: don't think during the blog era, all the mixtapes used
- 46:50Speaker 1: to be free. You would just go to like now
- 46:52Speaker 1: Write or Two Dope Boys or whatever site you like
- 46:55Speaker 1: that piff and you would just download the music. It
- 46:57Speaker 1: would be free. Other than that it would be a
- 47:01Speaker 1: release that you'd have to go to the record store
- 47:02Speaker 1: to buy. So this guy comes up with this idea,
- 47:06Speaker 1: and you guys it it works out nicely. I was
- 47:10Speaker 1: there that night when when the Crenshaw tape dropped. How
- 47:14Speaker 1: much do you attribute that moment, that idea to kind
- 47:17Speaker 1: of setting up so much of what came after that,
- 47:21Speaker 1: because I feel like it really shook up the industry.
- 47:25Speaker 4: Yep, I think it did. I think once again, man Hustle.
- 47:29Speaker 4: Hustle been doing these type of things since he was
- 47:31Speaker 4: a little kid. He always was a visionary and always
- 47:36Speaker 4: put it all on the line and had massive wins
- 47:40Speaker 4: because of it, and he always brought the team along.
- 47:42Speaker 4: So once again, when he say one hundred dollars, I'm
- 47:45Speaker 4: one of the first ones like, huh, bro, what are
- 47:48Speaker 4: you talking about one hundred dollars? He like, nah, trust me, bro,
- 47:51Speaker 4: and he tells me about the book and then he
- 47:54Speaker 4: read it, and before I could read it, I'm like,
- 47:58Speaker 4: all right, listen, I'm at you thousand percent. I'm all in.
- 48:02Speaker 4: But we got to give him a hat, a hoodie,
- 48:04Speaker 4: we got to give him a key chain, we got
- 48:06Speaker 4: to load him up for a hundred. And he's like,
- 48:08Speaker 4: we ain't giving them nothing. It's the CD is a
- 48:11Speaker 4: hundred and it's gonna be the Proud to Pay movement.
- 48:15Speaker 4: And if a lot of people are inspired, and I'm
- 48:17Speaker 4: gonna give it for free, and if they like it
- 48:19Speaker 4: and if they respect the music, and if they want
- 48:22Speaker 4: to spend one hundred, that's what it's here for. And
- 48:27Speaker 4: to your point, man, when it came.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Out, it was just twenty four hours.
- 48:32Speaker 4: Twenty four hours immediately, and I remember, you know, this
- 48:35Speaker 4: is before I knew anything and technology, and you know,
- 48:39Speaker 4: it was new to me that my brother's phone he
- 48:42Speaker 4: had that app connected to his phone. I think it
- 48:45Speaker 4: was Shop of Fire or whatever it was. And all
- 48:48Speaker 4: I'm hearing is ding. He looking at me smiling, and I'm.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Like, hey, when the jay z ding ding ding ding
- 48:55Speaker 1: ding ding comes through when he body's a hundreds.
- 49:00Speaker 4: And I think, yeah, he called somebody in Ate. They
- 49:03Speaker 4: had it wired. They like us to send us to Info.
- 49:07Speaker 4: Hustle sent them to Info. They wired it to Hustle
- 49:10Speaker 4: and then that went crazy. So it was one of
- 49:13Speaker 4: those things. Man Hustle always was a visionary man, and
- 49:18Speaker 4: he put the work in and he believe, he believed
- 49:20Speaker 4: in it, and then he made he made other people believe.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Shout out to our brothers at Hard Dean man OTTs family.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Of course, they've been sponsoring the podcast for years now.
- 49:28Speaker 1: You've been seeing the mic flag for years now. Want
- 49:30Speaker 1: to give a shout out to our brothers. I just
- 49:32Speaker 1: was in Vegas. I had to pull up all right. Look,
- 49:34Speaker 1: it's the number one dispensary in the world. When I
- 49:37Speaker 1: tell you, you walk in that thing and the butt tenders
- 49:40Speaker 1: are great. They take care of you immediately. The selection
- 49:43Speaker 1: is great. So when you go to Vegas, you get
- 49:45Speaker 1: into that cab you get into that uber immediately say
- 49:47Speaker 1: take me to Hardean. They don't know what they're doing,
- 49:49Speaker 1: all right, they gonna get you right, all right, the
- 49:51Speaker 1: number one premium cannabis dispensary in the world. They just
- 49:54Speaker 1: got me right. I was just in town for Raffi's birthday.
- 49:57Speaker 1: Had to pull up. Get right, just this nice little
- 50:00Speaker 1: on one Hardeing jersey. These are not available, all right? Shots
- 50:04Speaker 1: to them, man, all right, salutes to the family. Follow
- 50:06Speaker 1: him on Instagram. Hardeing Underscore Las Vegas. Sorry, let's get
- 50:09Speaker 1: back to the podcast. No, for sure, man, I think
- 50:12Speaker 1: I just think back because I even think like the
- 50:15Speaker 1: evolution of that is like what the Russell's been doing.
- 50:18Speaker 1: You know, he tells his fans pay what you want
- 50:21Speaker 1: to come to a show. Now, some people might pay
- 50:23Speaker 1: a thousand dollars, some people might pay ten dollars. But
- 50:25Speaker 1: I think it's I just think that we're kind of
- 50:28Speaker 1: in that era now with streaming where or artists are
- 50:31Speaker 1: realizing like if I have a flock, like I gotta
- 50:35Speaker 1: present stuff for them to like support me with. You
- 50:38Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, because in a world in which
- 50:42Speaker 1: you know, a million streams is like thirty nine hundred
- 50:44Speaker 1: dollars on Spotify. I think you gotta do other shit
- 50:46Speaker 1: right right? You know, I'm curious, man, You're growing up
- 50:51Speaker 1: and there's this era of La hip hop that I
- 50:55Speaker 1: will forever look back on as one of my favorites,
- 50:57Speaker 1: and that is nip Dom Kennedy YG. You know back
- 51:04Speaker 1: then you had Schemed the Duke and just so much
- 51:07Speaker 1: dope mixtape ship popping in La. How much of that
- 51:12Speaker 1: era were you tuned into and like, uh, were you
- 51:15Speaker 1: like like influenced by man?
- 51:18Speaker 2: I remember that era for me, it was like I
- 51:20Speaker 2: was in the like hot new hip hop also.
- 51:22Speaker 1: Got a shot because Tiger was on the way back
- 51:24Speaker 1: then too.
- 51:27Speaker 3: I was always on new hip hop too, Dope boys
- 51:29Speaker 3: and ship like that was my ship. So every everything
- 51:32Speaker 3: that was dropping, you know, like I remember the day
- 51:35Speaker 3: Crenshaw dropped. You feel me like like I was working
- 51:37Speaker 3: at a computer type ship. I think it was raining
- 51:40Speaker 3: and ship that It was just like Wiz was killing.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Mix tapes back then.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Block Air was my favorite.
- 51:45Speaker 3: Cushion orange juice. Like I was stuck on cushion orange
- 51:48Speaker 3: jues for a long ass time. But yeah, yeah, the
- 51:51Speaker 3: block Air was everything that was the peak as hat
- 51:55Speaker 3: Rocky you feel me.
- 51:56Speaker 1: I just think that the Dom Nipsy thing was such
- 51:59Speaker 1: a h It was like at the time they were
- 52:03Speaker 1: like Shaq and Kobe at.
- 52:04Speaker 3: L A like of the l A Underground like Fox
- 52:07Speaker 3: Yeah l A, Yeah for sure, Dom And it was like,
- 52:09Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, Boom, but you had you
- 52:11Speaker 3: had a lot of ship going on to LA Yeah,
- 52:13Speaker 3: pack div like PA was incredible for overdose overdose, you
- 52:17Speaker 3: know what I'm saying.
- 52:18Speaker 2: It was. It was like a dope little.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Odd future ship going crazy our future.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Remember you know the Tumblr are you know, I feel
- 52:24Speaker 3: like Tyler killed Tumblr like you smack Tumblr ass like
- 52:27Speaker 3: for sure.
- 52:28Speaker 1: But yeah peace Tumbler. By the way, I know it's
- 52:32Speaker 1: still there, but I think ever since they took certain
- 52:34Speaker 1: content off, people have stopped going.
- 52:35Speaker 2: It's different, all right.
- 52:39Speaker 1: So for you say, I'm curious, Uh, we got four
- 52:44Speaker 1: Marathon Burgers recently you announced Marathon Tacos. Where's that going
- 52:49Speaker 1: to be.
- 52:50Speaker 4: That's gonna be on Melrose's in between the Marathon clothing
- 52:53Speaker 4: store and burger It's uh right there on the same street.
- 52:58Speaker 4: I think we're pretty close. Maybe end of the year
- 53:01Speaker 4: we should have the big grand opening.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Now, like Marathon Burger is like a quintessential stop in LA.
- 53:10Speaker 1: And it's like anybody who comes to town, let's say
- 53:12Speaker 1: seven eight years ago, they'd be like, we need to
- 53:14Speaker 1: go to cookies and bye weed. Now they're like, we
- 53:15Speaker 1: need to go to a marathon Burger and get a burger?
- 53:18Speaker 1: Is it? Like how I mean, dude, it's got to
- 53:21Speaker 1: get crazy over there sometimes because you're always any rapper
- 53:24Speaker 1: who comes into town, no matter how famous or not,
- 53:26Speaker 1: they need to take a stop. So like it's got
- 53:28Speaker 1: to get kind of chaotic.
- 53:30Speaker 4: Yep, Yeah, we've been blessed. Man. I think you know
- 53:34Speaker 4: once again when we when we when we wanted to
- 53:37Speaker 4: do it, we're like, man, hustle for sure with press play,
- 53:41Speaker 4: so we got to go all in and man, we've
- 53:44Speaker 4: just been blessed at the response of the people of
- 53:49Speaker 4: all you know, walks of life, football players, basketball players, actors, artists,
- 53:57Speaker 4: everybody pulls up of notoriety. Also, Man, it just shows
- 54:02Speaker 4: love and you know does buyouts gives the people in
- 54:06Speaker 4: line free food. May just organically turned it into something that,
- 54:10Speaker 4: like you said, if you're in LA, you can't miss
- 54:14Speaker 4: and you know we couldn't. We couldn't even expect that,
- 54:18Speaker 4: and we just humbled and appreciative man. And we have
- 54:22Speaker 4: an obligation to number one, keep the food quality you know,
- 54:25Speaker 4: where it needs to be, and just make sure that
- 54:28Speaker 4: the services is correct. But yeah, it gets it gets crazy, man.
- 54:32Speaker 4: And I know you're in the restaurant game too.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Man.
- 54:34Speaker 4: Every day there's a new there's a new there's never
- 54:37Speaker 4: a piece.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's always something new someone Oaks showed or it's
- 54:42Speaker 1: always some ship.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Yep.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Like wait a minute, I was telling my you know,
- 54:46Speaker 1: because there was like this crazy like let us holopanio
- 54:52Speaker 1: thing going on, right, so how to hit my guys, Like,
- 54:55Speaker 1: hey man, just to be safe, no basil on the
- 54:58Speaker 1: pizza for the next week.
- 55:00Speaker 4: Right.
- 55:00Speaker 1: The last thing I need to do is ab somebody
- 55:02Speaker 1: saying what up there? Gave him explosive bubble.
- 55:05Speaker 4: Guy right right, right?
- 55:07Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm curious we had heard that there was
- 55:16Speaker 1: how first of all, YG and NIP have this incredible
- 55:21Speaker 1: relationship and it translated to just classic records. I think
- 55:28Speaker 1: the verses was a perfect example of how fuck Donald
- 55:30Speaker 1: Trump and last time I checked, are just just timeless records.
- 55:35Speaker 1: What was the progress or was there ever any like
- 55:39Speaker 1: beginning of because there was this idea that they might
- 55:43Speaker 1: do a joint album together. Did that ever get started?
- 55:46Speaker 1: And if so, is that music? I'm sure it's super unfinished,
- 55:50Speaker 1: if there's any of it, yep.
- 55:52Speaker 4: And I remember when they were trying to work on it, two.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Of America's most wanted right, what was gonna be the name?
- 55:58Speaker 4: I think so, yeah, think so. I think they had
- 56:01Speaker 4: spoke about that. YG would know better. But I remember
- 56:04Speaker 4: when Hustle told me about it and explained, you know,
- 56:08Speaker 4: what they were doing. And I remember certain sessions Mustard
- 56:12Speaker 4: YG that had started working. From my knowledge, not a
- 56:16Speaker 4: lot of complete records have been finished, but I think
- 56:20Speaker 4: that fuck Donald Trump came from those sessions, from one
- 56:23Speaker 4: of those sessions, and they just ended up leaking it.
- 56:28Speaker 4: But I know that, I know that there probably are
- 56:29Speaker 4: some some some verses. A lot of the team and
- 56:32Speaker 4: a lot of they guys sent over everything when we
- 56:39Speaker 4: kind of like did the blitz.
- 56:40Speaker 1: To see what was we need to see what's out there,
- 56:42Speaker 1: everyone calling all engineers homies.
- 56:45Speaker 4: Yep, yep. And I think for us the soundtrack to
- 56:53Speaker 4: the to the documentary is where dope records that are
- 56:59Speaker 4: close to being or don't fully have a a project
- 57:04Speaker 4: or having land on the project and are kind of
- 57:06Speaker 4: time stamped where you can tell Hustle was younger here, right,
- 57:09Speaker 4: Hustle older is here. In my eyes, they're gonna go
- 57:11Speaker 4: for the soundtrack for the for the doc because we
- 57:14Speaker 4: can all right, this is episode one is when he
- 57:17Speaker 4: was earlier, this is this record was recorded there and this.
- 57:20Speaker 4: So that's kind of what our thoughts have been for
- 57:23Speaker 4: finding anything dope because.
- 57:24Speaker 1: Almost like if there's really dope ship, you obviously want
- 57:27Speaker 1: to you want to you want to get it out
- 57:29Speaker 1: or be super strategic, like, hey, there's this jay Z song.
- 57:32Speaker 1: What it feels like for the Judas and the Black
- 57:35Speaker 1: Messiah soundtrack, that felt like, I want to say, that
- 57:39Speaker 1: was the first record we had heard that was new
- 57:42Speaker 1: from nip since he passed, But it felt right because
- 57:45Speaker 1: it's like, Okay, Nipsey and jay Z, this is this
- 57:48Speaker 1: is a moment, you know.
- 57:50Speaker 4: Yeah. So a lot of that stuff, once again, we
- 57:53Speaker 4: didn't know. We didn't know that that was even gonna
- 57:56Speaker 4: have an opportunity, And I think it may have been
- 57:58Speaker 4: Mike and Keys who were instrumental in even making that
- 58:04Speaker 4: a opportunity.
- 58:05Speaker 1: DJ had on the cuts Yup Yup.
- 58:08Speaker 4: And then I believe Jay heard it and jumped on
- 58:15Speaker 4: it too, cause I remember they were sending me the
- 58:18Speaker 4: the the the record when it had J on it.
- 58:20Speaker 4: And then obviously I know Hustle always wanted to do
- 58:22Speaker 4: something with Ja, So I was like, man, we got
- 58:26Speaker 4: one f we got one for Bro. So I was
- 58:28Speaker 4: just excited. Our whole team was excited to get that out.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Was there a lot of stuff done around the racks
- 58:33Speaker 1: in the middle time, because obviously Victory Lap comes out
- 58:35Speaker 1: and then next the following year, I remember he puts
- 58:37Speaker 1: out racks in the middle he pulled up on us.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Was there like the is there like a bubble of
- 58:44Speaker 1: stuff from that era?
- 58:46Speaker 4: Yup, there is there is. I I wanna say, being
- 58:50Speaker 4: on Hustle have a lot of stuff from that same
- 58:52Speaker 4: time even before and then there were still I I
- 58:55Speaker 4: he broke a little bit more than me, but I
- 58:59Speaker 4: I assumed that some of the stuff with some of
- 59:01Speaker 4: their newer stuff. And then with the guys the All
- 59:05Speaker 4: Money In team, we were working on All Money In project.
- 59:08Speaker 1: So that's obviously Pac Man Jstone, Free Jstone by the way, yes,
- 59:12Speaker 1: Free Jstone Man just put some money on his books. Man,
- 59:15Speaker 1: that's my guy. Good guy.
- 59:16Speaker 4: Come on, man, Yeah, pack Cousy, Cobby Killer, twin.
- 59:24Speaker 1: pH there's a lot of that stuff too.
- 59:26Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a project. We're still working on it. It's
- 59:29Speaker 4: things that Hustle laid hooks and gave it to them.
- 59:32Speaker 4: It's versus that he that he put together. So that's
- 59:35Speaker 4: gonna be a project.
- 59:37Speaker 1: All money in project, all money in project being worked on.
- 59:40Speaker 1: Can you tell me a little bit more about the documentary, YEP.
- 59:42Speaker 4: Documentary is about nine eight to nine episodes. Man, we
- 59:48Speaker 4: got footage from everywhere, footage from things I didn't even
- 59:53Speaker 4: think existed. Spring Hill came in and helped us and
- 59:57Speaker 4: just did a full court blitz and got all the footage.
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: So we have hundreds and hundreds and hours of UH
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: of footage to go through and we kind of just documented, man,
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: everything from you know, Hustle's childhood to when he first
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: learned how to record himself and make beats, Hustle in
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: the hood selling dope. Hustle when he first was like
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: taking it serious to alright, you know what, Uh i
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: I'm i'm' i'm'a try to do this this this music
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: and started his own record label and first shows and
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: when he was first in New York with Johnny Ships. Yeah,
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: they were recording, and you know, we got when my
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: niece was born in the hospital. Just y, you see everything, man,
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: you see you y. People love and respect hustle now
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: and they only really know ten percent a hust So
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: this documentary to me is so important because it's gonna
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: shed light on the journey and I feel it's just
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: it's very important to to to cement the story. And uh,
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: I can't wait till it comes out. Man, It's it's
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: we w We got shelfed for a while because we
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: didn't want to sell it to certain individual and certain
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: companies that were kind of trying to come in with
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: creative control. And so we just been taking a step
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: back and doing it the long way, self financing it
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: hundred thousand at a time, and we recently just got
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: Alan Hughes to come on with us, to come on
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: and help executive produce it and like push it, push
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: it over the over the line.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: That's dope. And now it's time to find who's the partner. Yeah,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: where's it gonna come out of. It's gonna be HBO, Max, Netflix,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: you know all that good shit.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the next step. I think we looking like
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: maybe another five six months to just finish it. And
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: then once it's finished and it's like, hey, there's nothing
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: up for critique or anything, this is this is it?
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: Then I wanna go and figure out where we put
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: it at. And more than the money, it's not even about,
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: you know, the sale, it's about reaching the most people.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: So I would love for it to be on Netflix worldwide.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: I want everybody to be able to see and stream
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: and watch it.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: Are you have you mentioned earlier being tough to listen
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: to Prolific? Is it tough to watch some of that stuff?
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: It's hard, extremely hard. It's uh, you know, I was
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: you gotta prove everything.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I'm sure.
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: I'm editing it with the team wow so and with
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: my team. So I'm there just glued in for fifteen
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: sixteen hours a day with the with the guys and
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: with the film team, and you know, as hard as fuck.
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: But it's my duty. Like I'm you know, I'm blessed
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: to be in a position to where they're asking me
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: like is this right? I'm like, no, that's not right.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: That does not feel right. That's not what happened. Go
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: get this footage, Go find this footage. We were here,
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: go find this, and then when they get it, they're like,
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: oh shit, now we see. I'm like, now now I
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: got goosebumps. Guys, this is exactly what happened. So from
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: every scene in every episode, this is what the meticulous
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: task is. And I feel like it's gonna be We're
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: gonna sweep every award they need to get bro a
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: Nobel Peace Pride. I'm talking about. It's gonna go crazy
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: when it finally comes out. You know. I tell the team,
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: we're tasked to not fuck this up, like this is
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: this is a.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Diamond, Like it's so good, Like all we gotta do
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: is not fuck it up.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: You just can't be stupid. You can't take some money
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: in let the dumb people fuck it up and oh
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: we only doing two episodes. Get him out of there.
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: Just focus in and do this correctly, and you know
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: the rest will come.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: There's some dude on Instagram who DM me. I hope
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: he sees this, by the way, because I would love.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys ended up buying the footage,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: but he sent me a screenshot of he was like
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: the cameraman on the Lax tour and so he sent
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: me a screen shot of me and Nipsey and Idaho
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: at the radio station in two thousand and nine, and
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I was like, Yo, can you send me that? And
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: he was like, I'm trying to get some money for
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: this footage right now quietly, so I can't really send
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: it to you, but just just know I have it.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: I gotta find that guy.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: Yeah, that's our guy. I know, I know who you're
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: talking about. If this if it's but.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: He was cool he said with this. I was like, Yo,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: this is crazy. This is like I didn't even know
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: any other footage besides you know whatever flip cam footage
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I have with Steve Lobell in the background and Adam
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: was in the and this is rapping over. What a time, man,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: what a time? I'm curious.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: One of the more like powerful days that I was
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: able to attend was Nip's funeral. Uh. That had to
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: be a hard day to get through, but it was
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: a beautiful day. How do you reflect back on that day? Man?
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: Just like you say, man, I was one of the
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: hardest things that Man, I can't even explain. It's like
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: you never would expect to be in that situation. And
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: I just felt like we had so much team and
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: family that wanted to help do this, and the fucked
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: up things that were happening as we were trying to
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: find places to hold it to to to to hold
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: bro funeral, It just felt like it was God pushing
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: us to get to this Stable Center, man, and just
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: you know, so many preachers and so many different churches,
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: was like nope. And so it came to a point
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: where we crying like damn, we can't find nowhere to
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: to to to to have Bro service, Like this is crazy.
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: And Karen Civil and you know Rock Nation and Lebron
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: and Live Nation, Repino, everybody s stepped up and just
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: you know came in and just really moved mountains wow
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: and and made it happen. And I remember when we
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: finally were realizing, like, man, Bro, it's gonna be at
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: the Staple Center. I just just look up like, man,
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: this this is what this is. This is epic. This
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: is how Bro deserves to be remembered and to be
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: you know, laid to rest. Man. And I feel like
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: that we were like, man, we we hitting the whole city,
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: and you know, the police was there and was like, nah,
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: you can't do that, and uh and and you know
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: we not gonna give a escort, and you know, we like, man,
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: fuck what they talking about. We we we going through
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: the whole city for Bro and for the city man,
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: and to show every hood we went through stood up
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: and came out and just paid homage and show Bro
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: love and respect. You know, I w I was appreciative, man.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: I'll never be able to express how appreciative you know,
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: I was in the family was. And when we ended
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: up going and stopping the on crensh On Slosson, the
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: sun had already went out and and it was cloudy,
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: and we got out the car stopped for a while,
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: and I felt like there was a beam, high beam
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: shining on my back, like somebody on the roof had
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: turned on the high beam. And I'm like, what the
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: fuck can I turned around and the sun was back out,
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: shining strong as hell, and everybody was looking like man,
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: the sun came back out, and I don't know if
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: it was just clouds that had covered it up or
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: it was just something we couldn't understand. And I felt
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: like Bro was, you know, there, and was you know,

- 1:09:25Speaker 1: the aesthetic. Man, Can you speak to Jorge and just

- 1:09:36Speaker 4: I remember when the when the marathon concept was coming around,
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: our whole team was looking at JP, like, man, who's
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: this guy? Man hustles, he hustled around him. They they
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: doing photo shoots and they talking about reading books and ship.
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: We was kind of looking at JP. Like, who is he?
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: You know? But in hindsight, man, it was so important
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: that Hustle had somebody like that like my it to
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: talk about branding, to talk about you know, the aesthetic
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: and the look and black and white photos and Hustle
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: wanted every every single that he dropped musically to have
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: a unique photo to accompany it. And just watching the
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: evolution and when the Marathon mixtape came out, the album
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: cover and the logos and them picking red because red
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: is a very you know, attention grabbing thing, just everything.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: You know, our whole team was watching and learned so
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: much and just so appreciative that you know, JP was
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: there to help, you know, bring that to life. And
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: it wasn't just a one time thing. It was throughout
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: the whole time since we knew JP. It was everything.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: It was the all money in logo, it was the
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: Marathon flag TMC logo. It was just him and Hustle
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: bouncing ideas off and JP being able to bring it
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: to life and Hustle, what you think about this, Oh,
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: let's do this, Let's change this just right there in
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: the pocket twenty four to seven, and even now with
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: so many different things that we're doing and like it's
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: we're all over the place, one hundred group chats. JP
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: is there twenty four to seven, you know, and there
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: to assist and make things happen. And definitely a big
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: part of the team, the marathon brand and all money
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: in brand, and we couldn't have done it without it. Man,
