- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining us now as Marod Awauda. He is the president
- 0:03Speaker 1: and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, which is
- 0:06Speaker 1: working with Dylan's legal team. Marod, So, Dylan was detained
- 0:10Speaker 1: by IES just this week. Do you know his situation
- 0:13Speaker 1: right now where he's being detained and what he's facing
- 0:17Speaker 1: in that detention and has his family had any contact
- 0:19Speaker 1: with him?
- 0:19Speaker 2: He's spoken to his family, and I think what he
- 0:22Speaker 2: has been facing is something that's similarly happening to tens
- 0:26Speaker 2: of thousands of other immigrants in this moment. Dylan was
- 0:29Speaker 2: a high school student here in New York City, working
- 0:31Speaker 2: part time to help his family and continuing to try
- 0:34Speaker 2: to get his education. Dylan has been moved several times already,
- 0:39Speaker 2: so it's been incredibly difficult for his legal team to
- 0:41Speaker 2: even get access to him.
- 0:43Speaker 1: What do you mean, where's he being moved?
- 0:45Speaker 2: He's been moved several times. The last I heard he
- 0:47Speaker 2: was in Virginia and a detention facility there. And I
- 0:52Speaker 2: think for us, as you know, as a nation, we
- 0:55Speaker 2: need to be asking the question, what is happening to
- 0:59Speaker 2: the rule of law. Dylan into the United States with permission.
- 1:03Speaker 2: He was legally seeking his right to asylum in this country,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and Department of Homeland Security and ICE continued to play
- 1:11Speaker 2: these games where people are showing up to court which
- 1:14Speaker 2: they're supposed to, and he was doing the right thing.
- 1:16Speaker 2: He went to court and they dismissed his case, and
- 1:19Speaker 2: it was kind of a catch twenty two situation for
- 1:21Speaker 2: him where the dismissal ended up being a reason why
- 1:25Speaker 2: ICE could redetain him and then put him an expedite
- 1:29Speaker 2: of removal. And we believe he's not even eligible to
- 1:31Speaker 2: be an expedite of removal because he was allowed into
- 1:34Speaker 2: the United States.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Can you explain that a little bit more? What brought
- 1:36Speaker 1: his family to the US and what was the process
- 1:39Speaker 1: of him trying to claim asylum. He said he had permission.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, his mother and siblings came before him, and when
- 1:47Speaker 2: he came into the United States, he had permission. He
- 1:50Speaker 2: entered through the CBP one app so that was an
- 1:53Speaker 2: appointment where he would get parolled into the country. So
- 1:55Speaker 2: he was accepted.
- 1:56Speaker 1: He had to apply. He was accepted to then have
- 1:59Speaker 1: his case go through the.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Multiple immigration relief options ahead of him, and he had
- 2:05Speaker 2: applied for them. And when he was going through the process,
- 2:09Speaker 2: ICE asked the judge to dismiss his case in the courtroom,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and the judge acquihenced and said the case has been dismissed.
- 2:17Speaker 2: He was not with a lawyer at the time when
- 2:19Speaker 2: this happened, which was a routine immigration court hearing, and
- 2:24Speaker 2: then immediately after Ice detained him and arrested him and
- 2:26Speaker 2: then started moving him around so that no one can
- 2:28Speaker 2: know where he was.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You talked about how this is happening not justin delan
- 2:32Speaker 1: but to potentially eight thousands of other people. And Dan Goldman,
- 2:36Speaker 1: another congress member, was on our air earlier this week.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I think last night he shared these pictures of what
- 2:42Speaker 1: he said were ICE agents apprehending migrants at immigration court.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Listen to what he said about it.
- 2:49Speaker 3: It goes against everything that the Trump administration has said.
- 2:52Speaker 3: These are the opposite of quote, murderers and child rapists.
- 2:57Speaker 3: These are people who are following the process. They're going
- 3:01Speaker 3: through the legal process. They're not criminals, they're not violent.
- 3:05Speaker 3: They are actually trying to do the right thing, trying
- 3:10Speaker 3: to do.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The right thing, going through the process, playing by the rules.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Why do you think they're being targeted.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think that the Trump administration has one clear agenda
- 3:18Speaker 2: that they're trying to deliver on and it's their horrible
- 3:21Speaker 2: and horrific mass deportation agenda. So they're going to continue
- 3:26Speaker 2: to be, you know, flagrant when it comes to following
- 3:30Speaker 2: the law. We've seen ICE do this time and again.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Just this past week, we've seen dozens of people here
- 3:36Speaker 2: in New York, not just in New York City courthouses,
- 3:39Speaker 2: but in Buffalo and across this country. People are being
- 3:43Speaker 2: detained in a similar fashion to Dylan, and even those
- 3:45Speaker 2: who aren't even having their cases dismissed, ICE is picking
- 3:49Speaker 2: them up immediately after stepping outside the courtroom. And you know,
- 3:52Speaker 2: Congressman Dan Goldman was at USC twenty six Federal Closet
- 3:55Speaker 2: where uscis is an immigration court yesterday and what you
- 3:59Speaker 2: ended up seeing and from his recording, you see that
- 4:02Speaker 2: he's trying to have a conversation with all these ICE
- 4:04Speaker 2: agents who are employee clothes looking for people to detain,
- 4:08Speaker 2: as if they're they're undermining the rule of law on
- 4:11Speaker 2: this moment, because if you don't show up to immigration court,
- 4:14Speaker 2: then you're going to be ordered removed. And if you
- 4:16Speaker 2: show up to immigration court, they are going to arrest
- 4:18Speaker 2: you now, and that's the really difficult part and the
- 4:21Speaker 2: cause that we've been getting from people is should I
- 4:24Speaker 2: go to my immigration court here?
- 4:26Speaker 1: What's your advice to them?
- 4:27Speaker 2: We believe that they should a first and foremost, make
- 4:30Speaker 2: sure that they have an attorney. And in the state
- 4:32Speaker 2: of New York, we have an amazing program that we
- 4:35Speaker 2: help run through off to New Americans to provide people
- 4:38Speaker 2: with immigration legal support. It's not enough, but it's something
- 4:41Speaker 2: where people can get immigration legal consultations. At the very least,
- 4:44Speaker 2: they should speak to an immigration attorney before going, and
- 4:47Speaker 2: then making sure that they can attain an immigration attorney
- 4:49Speaker 2: to help them navigate this case. Because even people showing
- 4:52Speaker 2: up with lawyers, they're getting detained in this moment, and
- 4:54Speaker 2: we want people to follow the rules and sometimes that
- 4:58Speaker 2: may end up being that you get detained.
- 5:00Speaker 1: And you talked about Dylan, who's a high school student,
- 5:02Speaker 1: not being there with an attorney. I mean, what does
- 5:04Speaker 1: a high school student know about how to handle, you know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: a court proceeding. We show the video of the protests
- 5:10Speaker 1: that we're happening here in New York City about Dylan's case.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Does that bring you any sense of comfort or is
- 5:17Speaker 1: it heartening to see that people are speaking out and
- 5:20Speaker 1: they're not just accepting this as sort of the new
- 5:23Speaker 1: status quo.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yes, So we were proud to organize that rally at
- 5:27Speaker 2: the Department of Education here in New York City. Hundreds
- 5:30Speaker 2: of people, as you see in the footage, came out
- 5:33Speaker 2: to demand his release. It's heartening to see New Yorkers
- 5:36Speaker 2: step up in this moment to continue to fight for
- 5:38Speaker 2: each other. But what we need is every level of
- 5:41Speaker 2: the government to step up. We need the City of
- 5:42Speaker 2: New York to invest in immigration and legal services. We
- 5:45Speaker 2: need the State of New York to pass the New
- 5:47Speaker 2: York For All Act, which would prohibit the collusion of
- 5:50Speaker 2: family separation and gutting our communities. And we need the
- 5:53Speaker 2: federal our federal representatives to fight back. We need more
- 5:56Speaker 2: people stepping into their power in this moment so that
- 5:59Speaker 2: we can continue to protect our communities.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Of that, thank you so much for coming in.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Thank you for having me.
