At 5 AM, inmates at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in eastern North Carolina staged a violent takeover, seizing control of parts of the facility and taking two guards hostage. With 88 inmates and three guards inside, one guard escaped while negotiations began. By 9:30 AM, 18 inmates and the two hostages were released, followed by another group shortly after.
