- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey, good morning everybody. Actually we are inside today
- 0:31because I'm freezing and I'm a big baby, so let's just leave it
- 0:34at that. And it's cold here.
- 0:36Colder. Not cold, but colder.
- 0:39Anyway, I often have people ask me if I had to just focus on one
- 0:45thing all day, what could it be? And I laugh because as a human
- 0:50being it's it's really important to know you cannot focus on one
- 0:53thing and one thing only for the whole day.
- 0:56It is next to impossible unless you have been meditating on a
- 1:01hill like a monk for years. You cannot control your thoughts
- 1:07for one thing all day long. It just doesn't work.
- 1:11And when they all say, well, OK, I understand, I understand what
- 1:14you're saying, but can't I just, you know, what's the one thing I
- 1:18want to keep telling myself? Or often you'll see people who
- 1:21quasi coach and say, hey, these are the things you should tell
- 1:26yourself. These are the three most
- 1:27important things that you should tell yourself every morning.
- 1:29Or 8 things that you should tell yourself or whatever the number,
- 1:32the ridiculous number is of things to tell yourself every
- 1:34morning. Here's the thing.
- 1:37Telling yourself something once is once.
- 1:41It's just once. It's going to do something once
- 1:43for a period of time. You tell yourself 8 things.
- 1:46Sure, it might work for a moment, but is it going to
- 1:49continuously work? And often times your brain will
- 1:53immediately argue with it because it has a different
- 1:56agenda, because that's how it's wired.
- 1:59So my experience has led me first hand with myself as well
- 2:04as with my clients to say questions are often better.
- 2:08And when you ask yourself a question, your brain is forced
- 2:12to analyze it because that's what brains do, it analyze.
- 2:15They analyze things. It has one function and it's to
- 2:19respond. So when you ask a question, it
- 2:22has to respond with something. So my favorite question to ask
- 2:26myself is how do I choose to show up?
- 2:29And sometimes it does answer and say, OK, I want to be a bitch.
- 2:34Like I'm just going to be honest with you.
- 2:35Sometimes it does say that when I'm in a situation where it
- 2:38requires me to be a certain way. I can remember when my son was
- 2:44getting picked on in school and I had gone in twice and I had
- 2:48already said, and I tried to be a very nice person and go in
- 2:51there and be like, look, this is happening.
- 2:53I get it. Boys do certain things, but he
- 2:56was tiny and he was in 3rd grade and he was coming home with
- 3:01wounds on his body from this boy that was picking on him.
- 3:04And the night before I was getting him in the bath and I
- 3:09saw that he had this huge wound in the middle of his chest.
- 3:13And I looked at it and I said, how did that happen?
- 3:15And he said he got pinched by another boy.
- 3:17Now any of you who know a little, you know, a little boy
- 3:20at that age doesn't have any meat on his chest and most of us
- 3:24don't. Where you could grab it and
- 3:25pinch it unless you really meant it and you were trying to hurt
- 3:28somebody. And the next day when I went and
- 3:32dropped him off and I walked into that school in order to
- 3:36have a conversation, I asked myself, how are you?
- 3:40How do you choose to show up right now?
- 3:42And the answer was I chose to show up like a bitch because I,
- 3:46they weren't doing something and it was a choice.
- 3:49Now I'm using that as an example because like I've, you've heard
- 3:52me say a million times, all our emotions are useful at certain
- 3:55points in time. I got in there, I did what I had
- 3:58to do. And when I walked out, I changed
- 4:00gears. Now how do I, how do I feel like
- 4:03I want to show up? What's my choice?
- 4:05How do I choose it now and all of a sudden I can switch gears?
- 4:10So for me, the most important question that you can ask
- 4:14yourself in a day is how do I choose to show up?
- 4:17Because it's going to drive you in the direction that you want
- 4:20to go. It's not going to just happen
- 4:23haphazardly because you're choosing it.
- 4:26And if you do need to be in a stronger state, let's just put
- 4:30it that way, whether it's positive or on the darker side,
- 4:34you're going to know it. You're going to go into it and
- 4:36know it. You're not doing it haphazardly.
- 4:39You're making a conscious choice to do it.
- 4:41And that's what this is all about, my friends, choosing
- 4:44consciously how you're going to show up.
- 4:47I, I can't begin to tell you how many times in a day I do this
- 4:52regularly. I haven't any situation that
- 4:55comes up and I'm not sure how I want to handle it yet.
- 4:58I go silent and that's a choice. How do I choose to show up quiet
- 5:03because I, I know that if I run my mouth, I will have to pay the
- 5:07price for that if I'm not in a clear state when I go to do it.
- 5:11So it's all about choosing. And when you ask the question,
- 5:15it's it, it forces you. Now you can change that
- 5:19question, but you have to have in it that word choose because
- 5:24that puts it back in you. It puts it on you.
- 5:26You have to and all those things reside in US and on us to
- 5:31handle. So you can frame it however you
- 5:33want. But my favorite way is how do I
- 5:35choose to show up or how do, how do you choose to show up?
- 5:40Like there's part, sometimes it's interchangeable for me
- 5:42because there's a higher part of me that's asking, well, how do
- 5:45you choose to show up right now? And then there's the part of how
- 5:47do I choose to show up right now?
- 5:50So it's interchangeable, but that's my favorite way of doing
- 5:53it and give it a try. See if it works for you because
- 5:57it works really well for me. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:00you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:02Bye.
