- 0:00Speaker 1: Now joining me on the line right now to tell
- 0:03Speaker 1: us a little bit more about what has happened over
- 0:05Speaker 1: the last week or so, and I believe last night
- 0:08Speaker 1: as well, from the twenty four to seven superstore. I
- 0:12Speaker 1: believe I've got Usman on the line. Good morning to
- 0:14Speaker 1: you Usman. Good morning now, Osmond. I know that there
- 0:20Speaker 1: has been well i've certainly seen some CCTV footage of
- 0:23Speaker 1: a group targeting your shop. Firstly, was that you or
- 0:28Speaker 1: the staff member?
- 0:30Speaker 2: No, there were the two staff members in the shop
- 0:33Speaker 2: at that time, now, Osmond.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Well, firstly, can I also ask as well? I know
- 0:40Speaker 1: that there's been a number of incidents over the last week,
- 0:44Speaker 1: but were you guys targeted last night as well?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah? And last night it was worst. They came with
- 0:51Speaker 2: the knives, with the pocket knife and some cutters. You
- 0:53Speaker 2: know you used the cutters to cut the boxes.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, two kids, Yeah, Oh my goodness, Osman, tell me
- 1:01Speaker 1: what happened last night.
- 1:05Speaker 2: There were two boys working last night. It was about
- 1:08Speaker 2: it was in evening, about eight o'clock, eight point five,
- 1:12Speaker 2: and some kids just came in the shop with the
- 1:16Speaker 2: cutters and they just point the knife at the that
- 1:19Speaker 2: cutter thing on on one of our employed and they
- 1:24Speaker 2: just get shot, what's what's what's going on here? And
- 1:28Speaker 2: then they just ran away, you know, they just get
- 1:31Speaker 2: them scared. And then because they were very young kids
- 1:34Speaker 2: like eleven years old or twelve years old, and there
- 1:39Speaker 2: was two boys and two girls inside and two girls
- 1:42Speaker 2: and one boy stayed outside the door.
- 1:45Speaker 1: My god.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And it's it's getting worst and worst every day. It's
- 1:50Speaker 2: very it's getting very hard to do business in Darwin
- 1:54Speaker 2: like this because all the employers getting scared, so they say,
- 1:58Speaker 2: we don't want to work.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Here, what is this?
- 2:00Speaker 2: This is not a good place this and that, you know. Yeah,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and you know there's already a shortage of stuff in
- 2:05Speaker 2: all over Australia, so it's getting harder and harder now.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Well and Osmond, you know, I watched that vision from
- 2:11Speaker 1: last night and also some of the vision from earlier
- 2:14Speaker 1: in the week, and I thought to myself, the staff
- 2:16Speaker 1: must feel really scared.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Are, mate. I you know, I really feel for you,
- 2:24Speaker 1: same as you know, like anybody that is having to
- 2:28Speaker 1: deal with this in your business and when you go
- 2:31Speaker 1: to work. Now, what was the response. I'm assuming that
- 2:35Speaker 1: you know that obviously last night when this well Firstly,
- 2:39Speaker 1: what did they steal?
- 2:41Speaker 2: They didn't steal anything. They just came in. There are
- 2:45Speaker 2: some money and stuff. Yeah and yeah, but and so
- 2:52Speaker 2: last night, but luckily the employees are yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Well that yeah, exactly right. So did they did they
- 2:58Speaker 1: end up getting any money or didn't get any in the.
- 3:01Speaker 2: End, No, because they get because they were very small kids,
- 3:04Speaker 2: like very young, So the employers get them scared, you know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: like they were big boys. So so they just ran
- 3:10Speaker 2: away and we just called the police immediately and we
- 3:14Speaker 2: give them sciy with footage and stuff. Yeah and yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 2: and yeah. It's getting worse, you know. I mean, I
- 3:22Speaker 2: don't know what happened. If tomorrow more kids come with
- 3:24Speaker 2: a knife and stab someone other employees, Like, what's going
- 3:27Speaker 2: to happen? Who's responsible? You know, if they get one
- 3:30Speaker 2: of us? So yeah, it's very nice. It's getting worse.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Now we need something, We need protection, We need to
- 3:37Speaker 2: do some police to do something for this. You know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: they should be banned from from from city, or they
- 3:43Speaker 2: should get arrested. There should be something, but nothing's happening.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yep. And osman, this is one of the things that
- 3:49Speaker 1: you know, everybody's scratching their heads and asking at this
- 3:52Speaker 1: point in time. I mean, if you've got a group
- 3:54Speaker 1: of what sounds like seven kids, you know, they look
- 3:57Speaker 1: incredibly young walking around the city. What of the night
- 4:00Speaker 1: did this happen at.
- 4:03Speaker 2: It's happening really between seven thirty, like after seven thirty,
- 4:08Speaker 2: so the attack after seven thirty eight, after eight o'clock. Yeah,
- 4:14Speaker 2: so that's you know, and.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Like you think to yourself, why is a group of
- 4:18Speaker 1: young kids walking around the streets anyway? I mean, I
- 4:21Speaker 1: know that it's not late late at night, but it's
- 4:23Speaker 1: still you know, it's still not not a great thing.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It's a school night. And then for them to be
- 4:29Speaker 1: armed with a knife, and I think you mean, I'm
- 4:32Speaker 1: assuming that you meet a Stanley knife, the ones that
- 4:35Speaker 1: cut those boxes open. It's really it's dangerous, but it
- 4:38Speaker 1: is also frightening for the staff.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It's so frightening. They're very scared. And we are suffering,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, and we have we don't have because we're
- 4:48Speaker 2: thinking all the time about these kids, you know. I
- 4:51Speaker 2: mean when we are home, when we are anywhere, we
- 4:54Speaker 2: need to think about it. We need to go to
- 4:55Speaker 2: the shop to look after the boys, to ask them
- 4:58Speaker 2: what if they come or you know, we're very scared
- 5:00Speaker 2: at them. We have families, We need to give time
- 5:02Speaker 2: to families. We have other things that the businesses, you know,
- 5:05Speaker 2: So it's it's getting worse for us. You know, we
- 5:08Speaker 2: are getting a mental issues. You know. I mean if
- 5:11Speaker 2: you say, like if you if you catch kids and
- 5:14Speaker 2: do something, they will have mental issues. But what about us?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Nobody thinks about us. You know, if one of us
- 5:19Speaker 2: is gets skilled, so who's who? What about them? But
- 5:23Speaker 2: nobody cares about us. They just care about their kids. Right.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But what they're doing, that's not a kid thing, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 2: it's not a normal thing. But but before before they
- 5:33Speaker 2: used to come, they still drinks and shape that's fine, right,
- 5:36Speaker 2: like that was not a big thing. But now they
- 5:39Speaker 2: start coming inside the inside in behind the counter, they
- 5:43Speaker 2: jump the counters. They're coming with their knives. It's worse.
- 5:46Speaker 2: This is a serious problem. This is not a normal thing.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Now, no you're sport on. Yeah, yeah, it's not normal.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And I'll tell you what. You know, the community cares
- 5:59Speaker 1: about you guys. Everybody out there listening this morning is
- 6:01Speaker 1: going to be thinking exactly what you are. That it
- 6:05Speaker 1: is not normal, It is not okay, and something needs
- 6:09Speaker 1: to bloody well change. It's you know, we cannot have
- 6:12Speaker 1: a situation where there is kids running around the streets
- 6:15Speaker 1: in our capital city with knives, threatening staff, you know,
- 6:20Speaker 1: in a business like yours.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and police should put some extra effort on this event,
- 6:26Speaker 2: on these things, because I mean, I know the police is.
- 6:32Speaker 2: It's good. Sometimes they're helpful, you know, they help as
- 6:35Speaker 2: much as they can. But they should put they should
- 6:38Speaker 2: put extra effort on this incidence, on these sort of incidents,
- 6:42Speaker 2: on these people, on these kids, you know, because it's
- 6:47Speaker 2: not normally I would say, no.
- 6:49Speaker 1: It's most certainly not. Yeah, it's most certainly not. And
- 6:53Speaker 1: look it's on top of obviously the other anti social
- 6:55Speaker 1: behavior issues that we're seeing around the city as well.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Osmond last night, it's my understanding that a few businesses
- 7:04Speaker 1: were tormented by these kids the same as what yours were.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Is that is that what you're being told? Yeah? Do
- 7:13Speaker 1: you know? Yeah? Do you happen to know where else
- 7:15Speaker 1: had had these kids go in and threatened staff as well?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, First they went to the down twenty four to
- 7:22Speaker 2: seven store on the Mitchell Street, Then they came to
- 7:25Speaker 2: the twenty four to seven shop on the Knacky Street,
- 7:28Speaker 2: Then they went to the minim Nucky Street. There is
- 7:31Speaker 2: another small shop opposite to our shop. And then they
- 7:35Speaker 2: went to the vintage sellers, the bottle shop, and they
- 7:38Speaker 2: still they just told to wine bottles and then they
- 7:44Speaker 2: just run away.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Now, Osmond, I know that you mentioned just a short
- 7:49Speaker 1: time ago that you know, you feel as though the
- 7:52Speaker 1: authorities that everybody needs to look at things a little
- 7:55Speaker 1: bit differently. Maybe people need to be banned from the city.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You know, those listening this morning, how big an impact
- 8:03Speaker 1: is this having on you, your staff and being able
- 8:07Speaker 1: to run a business in our city.
- 8:10Speaker 2: It's it's a huge it's it's a big problem now,
- 8:14Speaker 2: you know. I mean, of course it's it's it's because
- 8:18Speaker 2: we need to put extra people. Now, you know, it
- 8:20Speaker 2: caused us extra money. Like a couple of months ago,
- 8:23Speaker 2: they came, they break the window and it cost us
- 8:26Speaker 2: five thousand dollars and we're losing so much money and
- 8:30Speaker 2: we are losing our employees. So yeah, it's it's it's
- 8:35Speaker 2: getting harder and harder every day. Now. Yeah. We need
- 8:40Speaker 2: we need, we need someone to do something.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Osmond, I appreciate you speaking to me this morning. I
- 8:47Speaker 1: know that it's not easy. Please pass on, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 1: to your employees that we hope that they are okay.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I'm really sorry, you know, to hear that this has
- 8:56Speaker 1: happened to you guys, and you're so right. Something has
- 9:00Speaker 1: got to change. Yeah, definitely, Yeah, usband, keep in contact.
- 9:06Speaker 1: We'll keep in contact with you. I appreciate you speaking
- 9:09Speaker 1: to me this morning. Thank you,
