- 0:07The 1967 Major League Baseball All-Star Game took place at Anaheim Stadium on July 11, 1967.
- 0:14The starting lineups of the two teams included 12 future Hall of Famers.
- 0:18The National League was managed by the Dodgers Walt Alston, who would be managing his 7th All-Star Game.
- 0:24The American League was managed by the Orioles Hank Bauer.
- 0:27The Orioles won the championship in 1966, their first in franchise history,
- 0:31dating all the way back to the early days of the American League when they were the St. Louis Browns.
- 0:35This audio recording is from the radio broadcast featuring announcer Jim Simpson, Tony Kubek, and Buddy Blatner.
- 1:05Frank Robinson and I are both out with injuries.
- 1:09The other team was on the other foot, and the Major League, at least, in three games off, is in the driver's seat.
- 1:14That's right, Jim, and of course, Dallas K-Line has an injury to his hand, a fracture in that hand,
- 1:19and Frank Robinson was injured in a collision with a white sock, and he, of course, has had double vision for some time,
- 1:26and no one seems to know when either of these two players will be back in the regular season lineup,
- 1:30and of course, they're missing this All-Star Game.
- 1:33But, excepting the experience, the only picture for the American League, Dean Shant, has seen All-Star service
- 1:40for the National League ground many, Gibson for one, Drysdale many more,
- 1:44so the experience in this All-Star Game will go to the National League.
- 1:49All right, Tony, we might point out the temperature here at nearly game time.
- 1:53As shown on the snowboard in left center field, there's 92 degrees.
- 1:57There is some fog here in Anaheim, but it is a good paper baseball, even though it is a hot paper baseball.
- 2:02In just a few moments, we will have the introductions of the National League and the American League Plus,
- 2:07and of course, the National League here at Anaheim is visiting the club.
- 2:11Down to our right, along the left field line, Juan Merochel, who has quite an All-Star record, is warming up,
- 2:16and will start the game for the National League.
- 2:18Dean Shant is warming up down the left field line for the American League.
- 2:22While Juan Merochel, he has two victories in All-Star play, in 1962 and again in 1964,
- 2:28and only one player in history has won three All-Star games.
- 2:32That was left to Gomez back in the 30s, in 1933, 35, and 37.
- 2:37And Merochel, who has 12 victories to lead the major leagues of victory thus far this year,
- 2:43is also a record shows that his sixth to 11 innings, and over the last seven innings,
- 2:47is not allowed a single run.
- 2:49Dean Shant, as Tony said, has been an All-Star play before.
- 2:53And across, he's an exchange room, and has played many ball games here at Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:58Dean goes last year, he was seven and seven years.
- 3:01With a Minnesota twin this year, he has won an all, Shant has won 11 ball games.
- 3:05But an All-Star play in 1964, Dean worked three innings, and did not allow a run,
- 3:12and only gave up two hits. That was his only All-Star appearance.
- 3:16The question I believe, Tony Kubek, will be how can the substitute,
- 3:21who has been picked to replace Frank Robinson, and now Ceylon in the outfield,
- 3:26pick up the American League squad.
- 3:28Tony Leverose, of course, is part of the player.
- 3:31The former rookie of the year is one of two batting captain's gifts.
- 3:33All there is batting averages well below 300 this year.
- 3:37Tony is only hitting key 16, but nevertheless, we just remember, you and I have seen him with the player,
- 3:42that Tony of late has been trying to hit it.
- 3:44Yes, he has been, of course, Tony hits from the left side,
- 3:47and he can hit the ball in any direction with power,
- 3:50and he's going to be a big asset for this American League club.
- 3:52When you have to put it, and a Leverose in to replace the K-liner, Robinson,
- 3:55you're not losing a whole lot, and this is the same with Tony Canidale.
- 3:58A right-handed hitter, a good pole hitter,
- 4:00and hit the ball out with any swing, has a good arm and a good defensive right-fielder.
- 4:04So the replacements in this All-Star game for the American League are pretty strong players,
- 4:08and fouls, and should do a very good job.
- 4:11Only here in the United States, and those listening on Armed Forces Radio throughout the world,
- 4:15I'm sure there are many discussions, and even arguments, of which is,
- 4:19the stronger League, the American League or the American League.
- 4:21And as we have said, the American League now holds the 1917 head.
- 4:25They won the last four in a row, whereas in the World Series a year ago,
- 4:29Baltimore took the National League champions for dodges, four in a row.
- 4:33More recently, there's been talk about pitts.
- 4:36And quote Osteen, who used to be in the American League, and who has gone the National League says,
- 4:40that easily, the Sullivan National League teams have one or two shots,
- 4:44whereas the American League has pitts of many deeps.
- 4:48So we've got no white shots to case in point.
- 4:50And I would imagine today with hitters like Clemente, Aaron, Sepedi,
- 4:54Sepeda, Alan, Sory, all of those with 300 marks,
- 4:57that it's going to have to be if the American League pitts, and holds up this clock.
- 5:01That's right, Jim, the American League has good pitching, good pitching,
- 5:04depth throughout their staff.
- 5:06And another thing that I have noticed, as has Sweet Boyer,
- 5:09who of course I played with, with the Yankees for so many years,
- 5:12and he is now in the National League with the Atlanta Braves,
- 5:14he has noticed somewhat of a difference in defense play.
- 5:17In other words, the National League, although they have the defense of ball players,
- 5:21they do not seem to have as much defense in the infield.
- 5:25So this could be a big thing in this all-star game,
- 5:28to the superiority of the American League's defense.
- 5:31Well, Sean and I, along with Ronnie Brasser, will be checking throughout the game,
- 5:35and we'll keep you advised, and of course, I'm sure that you can tell this by listening,
- 5:39but we'll try to analyze for you a little point, the defense.
- 5:43And the pitching of both the National League and the American League All-Stars,
- 5:47as they gather for this, the 38-all-star game.
- 5:50Now the National League is being introduced to Brasser,
- 5:53Walt Poster is being introduced,
- 5:55Poster has won more All-Star games than any other Manichae.
- 5:581951, two of them in 1916, again in 1964, and again in 1966.
- 6:04Five and all, and he has lost two in 1951 and 1957.
- 6:09Now the starting left field, Lube Rock getting two in the field.
- 6:12Has been introduced.
- 6:15From the Fifth Bird's last year's fourth viable player, Roberto Salani, now hitting 352.
- 6:21Listen to the starting averages that the National League team has introduced.
- 6:25In center field, he plays right field for the Atlanta Braves, and again hitting 348.
- 6:32At first base, and with the St. Louis Cardinals leading the Major League,
- 6:37the National League team has introduced it on the Orlando Stupider, hitting 356.
- 6:44Micky Allen is the third baseman this year from the Philadelphia City,
- 6:48and Micky, former Lokey, is here himself, hitting 314.
- 6:53A man who did not know whether or not he would be here,
- 6:56because of an injured ankle, the Atlanta Braves' front gets it in here,
- 6:59and wincing a little bit, but hitting 317 and ready to play,
- 7:02yellow story. Now the center of the end field, both men are from the Fifth Bird's.
- 7:08The second base, hitting 293, Bill Masarovsky.
- 7:14An anonymity at first off, in his first all-star game,
- 7:18but nevertheless he got more votes than any other player in either the American
- 7:21and National League balloting, Dean Alley, hitting 283.
- 7:24And batting night, Juan Merozel, who this year is one-twelf and lost seven,
- 7:31has struck out 137 and lost only 30.
- 7:36Down the moment the reserves will be introduced,
- 7:3839, Tom Haller, Donny Jones, Woody May,
- 7:42for the first time in many years not starting,
- 7:44Jim McGovern, Donny Perez, Stephen Lowes,
- 7:47Rusty Staub and Bill Wynn, the latter two from the Houston Astros.
- 7:51And Donny Cooperack again, we can only remark,
- 7:53what a powerful team the National League has lined up along the First Base line.
- 7:57That's right, Jim, of course, any replacement at his ball game
- 8:00is a fine player who is replacing a starting player in that position.
- 8:04Now the American League, the manager of the World Champions,
- 8:08all-more oiled and solid.
- 8:11The bank has brought it up to the Third Base.
- 8:14And this is for Santa Monica, California,
- 8:16he is an American League fan,
- 8:18and you will hear a lot of it.
- 8:21Up here for Brooks Robinson at Third Base.
- 8:25That's his plate in the last 10-all star game.
- 8:30Out in the second, and this color is the rookie here.
- 8:33From the Minnesota twins, Rod Carreau,
- 8:35with the left-handed hitting, the second base.
- 8:40Brooks Robinson was hitting 2-56 before the all-star break.
- 8:43Carreau at 3-13, and only one of two-starters,
- 8:46over the 300 miles for the American League.
- 8:48Donny Oliva, who has never hit the low 300,
- 8:51will bat third and play in the center field.
- 8:54He is hitting 2-60 at the moment.
- 8:56Armin Kolibu, make this three today.
- 8:58He is in, selected to the all-star spot as an outfielder
- 9:01as a third baseman in the day of the first baseman.
- 9:03Armin hitting 2-59, with 22 home runs.
- 9:0623, Magie Arrows, from the Boston Reds.
- 9:09Will be in right field, batting fifth.
- 9:11Magie Arrows batting average, 2-90 for the year.
- 9:14And another Reds, Ardious Kempke,
- 9:16selected by the players to start in left field.
- 9:18And Carreau is hitting 3-24.
- 9:2119 home runs this year, all last year,
- 9:24he has sent the other total of 60.
- 9:26Bill Freehand, with 12 home runs,
- 9:28is planning to collect it all last year,
- 9:30because they're from the Detroit Tigers.
- 9:32Hitting 2-75.
- 9:33Ardious Kempke, from the right field stop,
- 9:35and he may only play in short time today,
- 9:37because of a bruised right wrist.
- 9:39Regal, with 2-70, hitting 2-91.
- 9:41And the pitcher today,
- 9:43has lifted the hand that he will get,
- 9:45forward.
- 9:46California Angel, now with an Minnesota twin,
- 9:48James Hanks.
- 9:56Now the rest of the players,
- 9:57and coaches for the American League,
- 9:59at third base today, Bill Rigney,
- 10:00the manager of the California Angel,
- 10:02will be coaching in first base,
- 10:03from the late leading White Rock,
- 10:05and he's thanking will be the coach.
- 10:07For the National League,
- 10:08it will be Harry the Hot War,
- 10:09for the fifth third part of third base.
- 10:11And Herman Franks of the San Francisco Giants,
- 10:13at first base.
- 10:14We had one goal on,
- 10:15and all ladies and gentlemen,
- 10:16here at Anaheim,
- 10:18and the crowd larger,
- 10:19are National Amp.
- 11:19And we'll be back with,
- 11:31War of the Free Game Color,
- 11:32after this message,
- 11:33from the Chrysler Corporation.
- 11:35Hi, this is Beauty and the Moon.
- 11:36Now I'm not very handy with a slide wheel,
- 11:38but 10 of them can be,
- 11:39as I'm about to be sent from here.
- 11:41After they've heard the new film of Fury,
- 11:50the biggest film of the late in his class,
- 11:52he's saying that it just,
- 11:54got around,
- 11:55slapping each other back.
- 11:56Well, not these guys.
- 11:58Right, Edie.
- 11:59Film of engineers also fitted Fury,
- 12:01with the largest optional V8,
- 12:03and the biggest brakes in his class.
- 12:05Plus, torsion bar suspension,
- 12:07and very touch inferior.
- 12:09Drive a Fury soon,
- 12:11and just as please,
- 12:12Film of engineers,
- 12:13take along the yard stick.
- 12:14Fury also has the largest trunk in his class.
- 12:17That's right, a big, luxurious theory soon.
- 12:24It's the high value car in the low price field.
- 12:31This is the Crest Car 57.
- 12:37See Fury today at your Flima Stealer.
- 12:42The umpire is today behind the plate, Ed Rungy from the American League and his 4th All-Star Game.
- 12:48Frank Stikoy of the National League and the 5th All-Star Game is his first name.
- 12:51Lou DeMurrow of the American League's 2nd Ken Burghardt of the National League is his third.
- 12:56Down the right field line, umpiring his 4th All-Star Game, Emma Passford and down the left field line from the National League, Chris Felicudas.
- 13:03And below us now, Red Ruffin and Lloyd Winner.
- 13:08All members of the Hall of Fame, elected this year, will throw out the first ball.
- 13:13For this the 38th All-Star Game.
- 13:16Roughing of course, the form was made with the New York Yankees and Lloyd Winner, quite a hitter for the 5th first time.
- 13:21We pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 13:26WNBC keeps things going with up to the minute traffic reports all weekend long on WNBC, AM at FM, New York.
- 13:38Jim Simpson along with Tony Kubeck and Buddy Blatner from Anaheim Stadium for the 38th All-Star Baseball Game.
- 13:45Red Ruffin has taken the ball and Lloyd Winner has taken the position behind the plate and Ruffin will throw out the first ball.
- 13:51For this the All-Star Game.
- 13:52And while that's there, what he takes place, that is now called in Buddy Blatner, the voice of the California Angels
- 13:57and the man who knows the most about this, Anaheim Stadium, the fight of this All-Star Game.
- 14:02And Buddy, welcome aboard and a few words about Anaheim Stadium.
- 14:05Jim, thank you.
- 14:06Apparently a delight for me to share this mood with you and Tony for this great All-Star Ball Game.
- 14:11We certainly have an awesome array of power and talent on this play today.
- 14:15I guess we can kind of say that through these quarters fast, the greatest ball players of the world here this afternoon.
- 14:21And it's a pretty quickly Anaheim Stadium.
- 14:23It's a year and a half old and it will be swell to a capacity of 46,000 this afternoon with the structure of 3,000 bleacher seats in left field and in right field.
- 14:35But I think the big thing about this ballpark, and I think Tony will agree with me, is the ball players love it.
- 14:41It's a functional ballpark as far as the spectators are concerned, but it's a fair ballpark.
- 14:47This is not a pitch that's a ballpark, nor is it a van box, a hitter's ballpark.
- 14:52If you hit the ball well, it will leave the ballpark. If you pitch well, you'll win.
- 14:56Buddy, another thing that was mentioned by some of our infielders, Mazurask and Allianz, are taking care of the infield in this ballpark.
- 15:02It's a very good infield. They'll see too many bad hops and they like to play on something like this after hip-furt.
- 15:07That's right. And the infield is not as hard as some that you may find through the mid-west.
- 15:13It's mid-season because they kind of fake out. But this is our warmest day, but ordinarily it's like cool here.
- 15:20And the field is in marvelous playing conditions. And I'm going to kind of sit back here and have a bit of a little fly.
- 15:26All right, Buddy, we'll be hearing from you later on.
- 15:28First of all, defensively, let us cut the American League squad, which has already taken the field.
- 15:32Tom and Killer Brew is at first base. Rob Garou is a Minnesota twin, like Killer Brew at second base.
- 15:38After selling his starting, the shortstop from Boston. Brooks Robinson of Baltimore is the third base.
- 15:43Carl Diaz-Trempe at Boston in left field. Tony Oliva are the Minnesota twins in center field.
- 15:48Tony Conigliaro of Boston is in right field. Bill Freehan of Detroit is the catcher, Dean Shant.
- 15:54Now prepares to pitch. Galube Ross, a left-fielder hitting 282 of the St. Louis car.
- 16:00Hotline in his first all-star game. Led to National League and Southern Bases last year with 74. He can run.
- 16:08He's got 28 already this year. He steps in. Left-handed batter to face Dean Shant, who works outside and high with his first pitch for a while.
- 16:16And of course, Jim, the American League infield has come in quite a bit for Brock, being left-handed hitter.
- 16:21He has very good speed. He can drag money, he can push the ball down third base, and yet he has the power to drive it by him.
- 16:26So he's a very, very versatile type player. On inside, his chance for the second pitch is 2-0.
- 16:34The outfield is pulled ever so slightly to the right.
- 16:39And that's the first inning of the 38th annual all-star game with Roberto Clemente and Hank Aaron to follow.
- 16:44Here's the 2-0 pitch from Dean Shant's swing and a miss by Lou Brock, 2-1.
- 16:50And Tony Kubek and I last Friday night out in Chicago's Comiskey Park, saw Dean Shant hook up with Gary Peters,
- 16:58with another member of the All-Star squad who ordered one of the finest baseball games that we have seen in many years.
- 17:03Dan's delivers and has fell off to the left and up stands by Brock and that evens the comments to appeal.
- 17:09In that ballgame you're referring to, Jim, of course, Dean Shant from the Minnesota Twins was lost by the score of 2-1,
- 17:15and they lost in the last half of the ninth inning on an air in the infield where Shant gave up 2-1 and runs.
- 17:21And it was a very good ballgame all the way, very well played. It was a tough chance to score really on Versailles' shortstop.
- 17:26It was scored an air, but it could have gone either way.
- 17:29Do tune out and lead off better in the All-Star game. Lou Brock bouncing balls up with it as Rich Robinson,
- 17:34the third and the first to the fight to speed. It was Lou Brock who stopped down. One down.
- 17:39Rich Robinson had to back up and the ball might have calmed over his head, but he did get his head on the ball.
- 17:46Now the white has come down before throwing the ball and nips the ball back up a little bit.
- 17:49Here's the ball for many, hitting 3-52.
- 17:52Gerardo will be 33 years old next month,
- 17:55wrapping from the Dodger organization and what years he has had with the Fifth World Cup.
- 18:00This is his 11th All-Star game, his 7th start.
- 18:03He's 8 for 21 at All-Star play, getting 3-81.
- 18:10Chance works first pitch and Clemente goes around and loses batting help, swinging and missing strike loss.
- 18:17A little bit about Dean Chance's pitching. He has a very good passball, one that does not move any one particular way all the time.
- 18:24It's liable to sink, it's liable to take off, it's liable to fail.
- 18:27He also has a good hard slider and a pretty good full curve at times and it's very effective when he can get it over the plate.
- 18:33That's ready again, working rather fast. This is a high hopper, killer group comes off first base weight squirt,
- 18:38the roof goes over the cover, a result play and Clemente beats out an in-deal hit.
- 18:42A hit of the ball game and his throw the ball game and Hank Aaron comes to the back.
- 18:48And Jim Medbaugh, about as high in the air, but it did not hit the turf, it hit home plate.
- 18:53And there just was not a chance for a player committing with his fine speed.
- 18:57Here is Hank Aaron hitting 3-28.
- 19:01For Hank, this is his 16th all-star game with sense shot.
- 19:05He has played left field and right field in the all-star game, but never center field and he's playing center field today.
- 19:10Hank Aaron of course plays right field for the Atlanta Braves and he did play center field for the Braves back in 1957 when Billy Bruggen was injured.
- 19:18Now the position is not new to him, but he hasn't been there lately. Clemente on first, one down, top of the first, no score.
- 19:24Dean Shant working, right.
- 19:28A little more on Shant's style of pitching. Here's a little unorthodox, he turns his back completely toward the hitter and throws that left glove hand in the face of the hitter.
- 19:38It's very difficult to pick up the ball from his hand.
- 19:41And again, ground ball, this is Robinson's chance, he goes to second to Garou, he's got him as Garou goes high in the air and the crowd groans with it because the question was, did Garou have his foot on the bag when he got to throw?
- 19:53And the second baseman, Frank Sakari in the National League, says yes. And so Aaron reaches first on the first plate. Two out and here's Orlando Sopeta.
- 20:00He leaves the major league and hits it with 3-56.
- 20:04Orlando Sopeta has 12 home runs, his second in the National League and RBI is with 59.
- 20:16Comes up with Aaron at first, two down on the top of the first inning.
- 20:22And with Henry on first base, there is a steel threat. He does have real good speed and has a very good percentage of stolen bases.
- 20:29Inside, Tony with a fast ball from Sands, it's strike one. Orlando Sopeta, this is his ninth all-star game of seventh star.
- 20:35And Tony would hardly believe it. As great a hitter as Orlando Sopeta is in all-star play, he is one for 21. And that was a little blue tip to right field.
- 20:44Sands is ready, there goes Aaron and the ball is fouled off, up stairs to the right. Right to an Aaron, we'll have to come back. He had a good jump from Dean Sands.
- 20:53Speaking about that Jim, something about Chance is he is very slow in his delivery toward home plate.
- 20:59Mentioning before turning his back completely to the hitter, this gives that face runner on first base an added jump, maybe an extra step or so.
- 21:05With the speed of Brock or Aaron, they may try to take advantage of Chance's move should any of them get on.
- 21:11Sopeta has looked down the third base where Harry Walker, manager of the park, is giving the sign.
- 21:15Chance is now ready and throws on the inside corner, getting away momentarily from freehand, but he keeps the ball in front of him.
- 21:21And no advance by Aaron, 1-2 now to Orlando Sopeta.
- 21:25Ed Runge, rushing off the plate in case you just join us.
- 21:2992 degrees here at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California, as the all-star classic has come to Southern California once again.
- 21:37Aaron with the short lead off first, with a count of 1-2.
- 21:41Chance is ready and throws an over-round ball, drops back to the screen, fouled, and the count remains 1-2.
- 21:50The American League is playing for Orlando Sopeta very deep, both in the infield and the outfield, and he of course has power to hit the ball out in right center or left center field.
- 21:59But to hit the ball here as Buddy Blatner mentioned, in left center and right center, you've got to hit the ball pretty well.
- 22:04It's a very honest, very good ballpark to play in.
- 22:07Here's the one who fits with Aaron running, and there's the ball from freehand, but it is high to Petra Sully, and Aaron has gone on the base.
- 22:14And Jim's throw was high, but had a good throw, Aaron had such a good break on, seen Chance to picture that a good throw would not have gotten him either.
- 22:21He just got a real good jump to it as Speedy outran the ball.
- 22:252-2 is the count now, just with Sopeta.
- 22:28And Orlando having one of his great years in this first half of the season now has the chance to drive on the run.
- 22:33He has 59 on the season, as he said.
- 22:36307 lifetime batting average.
- 22:40This sort of all-star game just getting underway when the top of the first inning.
- 22:45And now Ed Runge calls for the ball and puts the new one in play.
- 22:51The Peta looks down to Harry Walker.
- 23:01Aaron with a fairly off second base, Chance looking at him and now throws Sopeta out of ground ball.
- 23:06Gellibrew goes to his right and will run to the back with the unassisted foot up.
- 23:10No runs, one hit, no errors, one left.
- 23:13In the middle of the first inning, the score is nationally nothing with the American League coming to best.
- 23:18Hi there, ladies and gentlemen. This is Rocky Nogget, the famous fighter.
- 23:22You know, ladies and gentlemen, I'll let you guys run on the left flight to get in a ring.
- 23:26Let me tell you, I don't care how good a poker with you are, you get in a ring,
- 23:29somebody's going to go bam, bam, hit you right up face.
- 23:32They're going to give you a face hurt. You know, when you shave before you go in a ring,
- 23:36use a blade that pulls on your face, you're going to get a face hurt.
- 23:39So when you go in a ring, you got to go bam, bam, hit you right up face.
- 23:42You're going to get another face hurt.
- 23:44And let me tell you, ladies and gentlemen, two face hurts in one day, don't do your face any good.
- 23:50So what I do, ladies and gentlemen, I use the Gillette Super Stainless Blade, the one they call the spoiler.
- 23:55It's got this miracle plastic coating on the edge that reduces the pull when you shave.
- 24:00You don't get a face hurt. They want to go in a ring, they got to go bam, bam, hit you right up face.
- 24:04I only get that one face hurt. And I usually win a fight.
- 24:07So if all of you ladies and gentlemen, I would get the Gillette Super Stainless Blade, the spoiler.
- 24:12It's going to make your face feel just great, unless somebody comes along and gives you a punch,
- 24:17but you let people can't do anything about that.
- 24:22Jim, send some along with Sonny Kubeck and Buddy Blatner back at Anaheim as we move now to the bottom of the first inning.
- 24:28It'll be Brooks Robinson of Baltimore, Rod Kru and Sonny Lever of Minnesota Twins to face one narrow shell.
- 24:34Defensively, Arnold Andelsovina, the Cardinals' first face for the National League.
- 24:38Bill Maserowski of the Pirates of Second, Gene Alley of the Pirates of Church Rock.
- 24:42Richie Alam of the Philadelphia Colleges, he's the third base.
- 24:44Neal Field, leading from left to right.
- 24:46Blue Brock of the Cardinals in left.
- 24:48And Kara of the Braves, in center with Roberto Clementi of Pittsburgh in right.
- 24:52Joe Troy of the Atlanta Braves is behind the plate and Norah Shell, as we said with his last seven innings,
- 24:57of all-star pitching scores.
- 24:59And the leader of the majors, with 12-dicts, is Gus Parvis.
- 25:02He has never, ever had a losing season.
- 25:04The Montezvah majors.
- 25:07Set to face Brooks Robinson, hitting 256.
- 25:11Brooks and the last 10 all-star game.
- 25:15He has started five, including the last three in a row.
- 25:20Marishel, he throws every kind of pitch in the book and has that high kick ready for his first six.
- 25:27Outside and a little high ball under Robinson.
- 25:31And Jimmy, to show you the type of respect that these American League players who make the both for the all-star team have for Robinson,
- 25:36he's just hitting 256, but of course, his foul is with the glove defensively as well,
- 25:41though he's picked out his defensive ability this year.
- 25:44Marishel rides back, and this fastball gets to the outside corners, one-on-one.
- 25:51You were mentioning about Marishel, the start of the pitch as well.
- 25:54This includes a curve ball slider, good fastball, sinker, screwball occasionally,
- 25:58and as you mentioned, throw it from all positions.
- 26:00Overhand, side arm, three-quarters arm, so he's got them all.
- 26:04One-on-one pitch is fouled off to the right and upstairs.
- 26:07It is one-on-two.
- 26:08No score, the American League leadoff better in the ball game.
- 26:10Brooks Robinson now is back.
- 26:12On Marishel as we saw him early, Tony, did not get off to a good start,
- 26:16and the sub-time did not appear to be throwing his card as he's begun to likely,
- 26:20some say it's because he came late through spring 20.
- 26:23Nevertheless, he was trying to get high on his breaking pitches,
- 26:25of which he's got a miss or two.
- 26:27Not on this time, and post on one hop to Maserati's second.
- 26:30It rolls to Savannah for the first time.
- 26:33And Brooks hits the ball well.
- 26:35A line drive, as you mentioned, one hop to Maserati in a difficult play,
- 26:38and a short hop to a long hop to Maserati, what is known as an in-between hop,
- 26:43a very difficult play to come up with.
- 26:45Here's Rod Caru.
- 26:47And listen to the story of Rod Caru, who is hitting 3-13 with six home runs and 31 RBI.
- 26:53Two years ago, he was the All-Star second baseman in the Plotus-Pakley.
- 26:57Last year, he was the All-Star second baseman in the Carolina League.
- 27:00This year, he is the All-Star second baseman for the American League.
- 27:06Caru left-handed batter.
- 27:08He's the Marisela who gives him the big kick, and the ball is outside of low ball one.
- 27:11Caru, a week ago, played in the first game with the Minnesota twins against the Chicago White Sox,
- 27:16in their important series, but then on Saturday and Sunday,
- 27:19with the second and third and fourth games, was doing military duty.
- 27:23He's now back to play in the All-Star game.
- 27:25Hit one of the opposite field, back goes Rue Black, on her course with the Waning Black,
- 27:28and has it, after one-eighth black, and Caru is there with the second base.
- 27:33And again, we didn't realize that Caru has that kind of power.
- 27:36He hit it to the left field, the opposite field for him,
- 27:38and Black hit the fence as he was about to catch the ball.
- 27:42Early in the year, we struck Caru, and he had a lot of infield hits.
- 27:45He can run very well, but since then, in the past few weeks,
- 27:48the hitting of the ball hard has a few home runs, extra bases,
- 27:51so he's coming around very well for Minnesota.
- 27:53And now another left-handed player, Tony Oliva, steps in with two down,
- 27:57and this is Caru's first inning of the All-Star game, for Mannaheim, California.
- 28:02Oliva and All-Star play, this is his third shot, he has won for 10,
- 28:05he's got double, he's hitting 100.
- 28:08Marichel ready with his first pitch, five, all-one.
- 28:13Tony is only hitting 260, but Mannaheim's Oliva in his last eight games
- 28:17has 14 hits and 33 times as fast, and is hitting it a 4-24 clip.
- 28:23His manager, his new manager, Calamera the Twins, has convinced he will again get 300 this year.
- 28:29Marichel is ready and throws, and Oliva's back goes clear into the nice league All-Star dugout.
- 28:35As he swings and misses, it is strike-lock.
- 28:38And Jim, they talk about one of the secrets of a good hitter is being relaxed up at the plate,
- 28:43and any time you see a hitter throw the bat, and how many does this often, too,
- 28:47it means he's real relaxed, those hands and arms are very free,
- 28:50he's got that nice loose grip on the bat, and yet, curving up the hit the ball powerfully.
- 28:54And you saw Oliva throw that bat a long way into the dugout.
- 28:58Eventually, someone picks up a white-doll and waves it back, we surrender.
- 29:01One-on-one, the counter, Oliva. Two-down, first-setting, no score.
- 29:06Marichel is ready with a big kick and throws this one outside. It is two-and-one.
- 29:11In numbering the pitches, this seems improbable, but major league ball players, coaches, and managers will tell you
- 29:17that Marichel has about eight different pitches.
- 29:20If you can find his pitches with this, the torqueman will deliver.
- 29:23Not on, three-quarter and overhand. Good one, now, to Oliva.
- 29:29Not relatively quiet as Oliva goes for a low pitch, swings and misses, it is two-and-two.
- 29:33Jim, that appeared to be the first screwball that Marichel has thrown.
- 29:37Took a little bit off, and Oliva is way out in front of the pitch.
- 29:41Now, I'm in kilobrew on deck.
- 29:45At this time of the day, in right field, the right fielder will have a little trouble,
- 29:49because the sun is just right to get in your eyes as you go over those high flies to right field.
- 29:54It will also affect the first and second basers.
- 29:56Marichel, this one, he has foul-tipped while Oliva, and this time as bad as fielded by Cepeda at first base.
- 30:02But he did get a bit of the ball, and the count remains 2-2.
- 30:06We mentioned earlier about defensive base, but in totally Oliva, it's one of the most difficult hitters there is to play in the big leagues.
- 30:12He can take the inside pitch, hit it down the left field line, or he might fall out,
- 30:16and he can do the same with the outside pitch, so any defensive in field play is very difficult to position yourself against a hitter like Tony Oliva.
- 30:24The National League got one hit in the top of the first inning, a stretch hit.
- 30:28The American League has yet to stretch, no hit, two down in the first inning.
- 30:32Marichel with a 2-2 pitch.
- 30:34At high, Cepeda comes off first base with the glasses down, near the seat, and watches it fall about three rows up to the right.
- 30:42The problem remains with Cepeda, nearly 46,000 here today, and the temperature at team time was 92 degrees in the scoreboard,
- 30:49and left center field, he'll show us the BWNBC AMRF New York.
- 30:56Marichel against Dean Shans, in case you're just joining us, there's no score.
- 31:01The National League, crying for an unprecedented Cep six-three in a row.
- 31:05Marichel throws, and this one is fouled back to the screen again.
- 31:08Off the end of Oliva's back.
- 31:10Ed Runge, in his fourth All-Star game, the American League umpire who is behind the plate.
- 31:16Shikori at first base, who is the senior man among the umpires, as far as All-Star experience is concerned, this is his Cup game.
- 31:24In the row of the American League gets second, Brecht Burkhardt of the National League gets third,
- 31:28Ashford of the American League down the right field line, Callacudas of the National League down the left field line.
- 31:322-2 pitch.
- 31:34Now Shokoro's hard, and inside, and gets him on the corner, and strikes it off.
- 31:38That's like under the ball game. No one so hits, no one's left.
- 31:41At the end of one, the American League nothing, the National League nothing.
- 31:46You've got an hitch to switch to one of those new longer cigarettes, but there's only one hitch.
- 31:51Switch to switch to.
- 31:53Switch to switch to switch to switch to switch to the new super King Thies Winston.
- 32:00Is there any other? After all, anyone can make a cigarette long, but...
- 32:04It's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long.
- 32:11And how does Winston make it long? With an extra measure of that painless good taste,
- 32:16that has made Winston America's largest selling cigarette.
- 32:19So if you've got an hitch to switch to a long cigarette, but don't know which to switch to, remember...
- 32:25Well, it's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long.
- 32:31Switch to the new Winston Super King.
- 32:34It should, it should, it should.
- 32:40We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 32:43Businessmen, do you think temporary office help is expensive?
- 32:46If you do, you don't know about Olston temporary services.
- 32:49To use them, you pay only one low rate that covers everything.
- 32:52Payroll, taxes, insurance, bonding and testing.
- 32:55Olston temporary services do not cost you money.
- 32:58They save you money. Look into it. Look up Olston.
- 33:01That's O-L-S-T-E-N in the white pages of your phone book.
- 33:05Listen to the up to the minute traffic report, all weekend long, on WNBC, A.M. at FM, New York.
- 33:12Right now on the first spot on the top of the second, and he swings and misses on the first pitch from Dean Shantz, strike one.
- 33:18Now, it will be followed by Joe Shorry and Bill Mazurowski.
- 33:22The only hit of the ball game, and infield hit by Roberto Clementi, is a bounce tie to Harmon Killebrew.
- 33:27Hans comes right back, outside and low, and it is one-on-one to Alan.
- 33:31Richie is hitting 3-14.
- 33:35And many of these National League players consider Alan the strongest man in the world to hear them talk, and there goes.
- 33:43There goes back in center field, Bonnie Olivine watching the ball for the home run.
- 33:47National League lead, one-nothing.
- 33:51And that ball went between dead center field, which is far-oh-six, and the 3-93 side, and went way back in the bleachers.
- 33:59So Jim, that ball probably carried 420 feet or better.
- 34:03And, Johnny Kubek, I'm sure you will always remember that just before he hit it, you said that many consider Richie Alan the strongest man in baseball.
- 34:10Jim, he's looking outside and low slider, what looks like a very good pitch, and appeared to just wave at it.
- 34:16And the ball just jumped out of the ballpark.
- 34:21And National League now leads one-nothing, and here's Joe Troy, always home run for himself, hitting 3-17.
- 34:28Dean Chance throws hide inside the story, and it is all one.
- 34:38Chance, this year, has one-eleven ball games, remember, opening for the American League round ball crew at second basal at this, tosses to Killer Brew, and that's the first out of the second inning.
- 34:49And Jim, Joe Torian is way down the first place, he's not running well at all, he's looking pretty much, so he may not see much more action in this ball game.
- 34:58Bill Mazurowski the batter, hitting 293, playing second base from the district, and every time I'm with you, Tony, I see Mazurowski, I can only think of the 1960 World Series.
- 35:08Well, it had to be done, I'm glad it was another full-lock that hit that home run to be.
- 35:13Mazurowski and Kubek, quite up there in the 1960 series. Here is Bill, hitting 293, swinging and missing, at the first pitch from Dean Chance, like one.
- 35:22From as this is his seventh all-star game as sixth star, 2 for 15, getting 133 at all-star points.
- 35:29And back, round ball, this is Epps or Selly at shortstop, who throws quickly the first base from there to up.
- 35:36And that will bring up another shortstop, Gene Alley, Alley born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, was 27 years old yesterday.
- 35:47This is his ninth season in the professional ranks, the third is the regular of the park. He had 289 last year, the best for the shortstop, and this year he has all-star shortstopped his first game, and yet he was the leading both-getter in fourth league.
- 36:00Playing foul tips of all, it is strike one.
- 36:06One to nothing to score, the National League leads on the leadoff home run in the second inning of Richie Allen.
- 36:17Dean Chance pitching now, 2-D now.
- 36:20Three quarters, this one hit the right center field, overcomes to Niggly Arrow and has it for the third half.
- 36:26One run on the home run by Richie Allen, one hit, no errors, none left to score in the middle of the second.
- 36:32The American League, nothing. Quite a bit of money and it's not necessary for the type of driving he has.
- 36:38We told Mr. Bessel that doesn't happen at BF Goodrich, because we give you a gadget called the tire calculator.
- 36:44It asks questions about how fast you drive and how much you drive. Then it tells you which BFG tires suit you best and cost you least.
- 36:53That sounds like a very good idea and a very helpful one, but you can be sure you'll be copy.
- 36:58He may be right, but right now the only place you'll find the tire calculator is at BF Goodrich, the street talk tire people.
- 37:05When you're ready for some straight talk about tires, just drop in any BF Goodrich store dealer.
- 37:15Look at the yellow pages with the name of the one nearest you.
- 37:18While we move to the bottom of the second inning and the very first man to come to the back is the man who has Richie Allen for the National League in front.
- 37:25He's called for the American League in a tie. His name is Harmon Killebrew.
- 37:29And Killebrew, as we said before, is setting all-star records today by being the only player that he selected to start at three different positions.
- 37:37He's been on the outfield, he's been selected for third base, and today he's playing first base.
- 37:42This is his seventh all-star game altogether and what a record he has. Six for 14, hitting at 4.29.
- 37:49He has two home runs, and if you look back to the record books, there's nobody that has hit four home runs more frequently for times this fact, except they've root our side from Harmon Killebrew.
- 38:00Killebrew and the National League wins, hitting 2.59. 22 home runs this year, leads the American League in RBI's with 62.
- 38:08He was surpassed on Sunday for the American League lead in home runs by Frank Howard, and there's two of them and now has 24.
- 38:14Marichael working, Killebrew, and Killebrew takes five from Marichael, and there's one left time, so they came completely off the mound.
- 38:21As by many of the National League, many of the American League clubs rather, Jim, pull a complete shift on Killebrew, that is they send their second baseman over to the third base side of second.
- 38:29The National League is not doing this now, although Alley is playing very strongly in the hole.
- 38:33Marichael throws again high and outside of Killebrew, it is 2-0.
- 38:37While Marichael, like a few other pitches, has great control. Usually control is the name of the game, and Marichael this year has struck out quite a few players on 137, but he's walked very few.
- 38:52There is Frank White.
- 38:56Killebrew in the past two years has become more of a smart hitter. He was a free-slinger pretty much until the last couple of years, and now he waits for his pitch.
- 39:05He's not trying to pull everything, he can go the opposite field that time.
- 39:09There's a broken bat, loose and back a third base, the foul is fouled, and I'm sure Tony that he broke his back, the bat boy is already out to pick it up.
- 39:17It'll be 2-2 to Armin Killebrew, who now goes after a new bat.
- 39:21As for Juan Marichael, as we said, 137 strikeouts this year, he has only walked 30 men.
- 39:27Killebrew is now in the dugout, selecting his next bat.
- 39:30Tony Kanigliaro and Charles Yosremski, two boys from the third team, off to Red Rock, will be the next to bat.
- 39:37Bottom of the second inning here at Anaheim Stadium, the 38th All-Star Game to score the National League 1 on Richie Island Home Run, and the American League is nothing.
- 39:47It has been said many times that these players that come to the All-Star Game would rather have three days off, don't come here to win when you see a fellow like Joe Torre behind the plate limping badly down the first base.
- 39:59When you see a Daniel Lamassu as a full rib cage musk, muscle and volunteer to pitch, are you wondering how these people are when they say things like this?
- 40:06Going to the Killebrew, the lead off batter in the bottom of the second inning, and Marichael taking his time with the sign, and there's Marietta.
- 40:12Right on delivery foul to bat by Killebrew, it is field 2-2.
- 40:20And of course, after the All-Star Game, we go into what is popularly known as the second half of the season in the American League.
- 40:27White Sharks are leading by two over Detroit, two and a half over the Minnesota Plains, from Asher League to Cardinals, two and a half games up on Chicago.
- 40:34Killebrew fouls another one off to the right.
- 40:36It is field 2-2. The White Sharks will open their second half against Cleveland at Cleveland on Thursday, and the St. Louis Cardinals go home, and will face the Fitzburg Toss.
- 40:48They find many to win the National League title. Two and two to count the Killebrew.
- 40:54Overhand Fitzburg Toss, misses outside, it is three and two.
- 41:05Killebrew, as we have brought up the possibility of his tying the game possibly with a home run, has not had a home run in his last 15 ball games, which for a harmonious but unusual.
- 41:14Here's a free two-fitch.
- 41:16Ron Paul, Richie Allen comes over from third, shoots it up, takes it down, throws the first and Killebrew is the first job in the American League second inning.
- 41:26Here is Tony Konegliaro hitting 2-90.
- 41:31This is Tony's first all-star game, and Tony is one of the reasons why the Red Sharks are doing so well in the American League this year.
- 41:41The Red Sharks now in the first division, six games in the back of the Chicago White Sharks, then searching.
- 41:48Tony has 13 home runs on the year 46 RBI, one down in the bottom of the second, and action league one, the American League nothing.
- 41:57Jim now down in the American League, both, and we have the first of any kind of activity, Jim McLaughlin is beginning to warm up down there for the American League, so he may be the next pitcher for Hank Fowler.
- 42:07McLaughlin, of course, from the California Angels, with five shutouts, Ian Johnly, John Leroy, Starks, leads the American League.
- 42:15There's your pitches, the right center field, and then he comes in called for it, and has it with a basket catch for the second half. And that will bring up Carl Yosemke, hitting 3-24.
- 42:30Yosemke last year, 16 home runs, this year, thus far, he already has 19, 56 RBI, and he's leading the league in hits with 92.
- 42:44The left-handed slinger, the step in against Juan Marichel.
- 42:53Takes low for Marichel, ball one. This is Carl's first start, he was selected in 1965, but was injured and did not play. He was selected again last year, but did not play.
- 43:03He did play in 1963, that's a substitute. Marichel already with a 1-0 pitch.
- 43:10Who's going to miss? Yosemke, it is 1-1. National League 1, and there's nothing bottom of the second, 2-0, none off.
- 43:17And that was a screwball once more by Marichel, he threw several 2-0s, threw one to Yosemke that pitch, and he has it way out in the park.
- 43:24Screwball breaking away from the left hand, hitter down at time, and with a good motion that Marichel has, he's throwing them quite a bit.
- 43:33Juan is ready once more, and the 12-game when it throws, and strikes two as Yosemke swings.
- 43:42Well, it's 8-2-3 innings now, of score to throw, and Marichel is fixed in his all-star career, and he's trying to make it 9-0.
- 43:51He has won two games, remember, and could win this one, and could tie, lefty Gomez is the only man in history of one free all-star game, we shall see.
- 43:59Juan Manez is just empty, strikes off, the second strike out from Marichel, and the runs go hit, no errors done left, and at the end of 2 with an actually won, the American League, nothing.
- 44:10Do the runs really have more fun? Well, I don't know, but I do know this. People whose rides are 67 Dodge Cornette's, sure do.
- 44:17Dodge Cornette is a moving kind of car, and has a big successful look, and wouldn't beneath all of that luxury is it surprisingly low price.
- 44:25Now, once you don't have to burn your budget in order to have a luxury look, and a luxury ride, inside you'll find the presence of all vinyl trim,
- 44:32all padded seats, and rich carpet, and if you really want to live it up, step into the Cornette 500, it's got a two-sport flare with bucket seats and shutter console.
- 44:41With ever Cornette you prefer, you can customize it with the wide choice of options, like air conditioning, power brakes, and steering.
- 44:48The lively choice of engines, runs from the economical 225, see we can fit the optional 383, 4-barrel V8.
- 44:55Cornette, new luxury at a low price. See all the Cornette models at your Dodge dealer, all with a good guys, and a wide-hatch.
- 45:03Certain spots, a real fifth of pregame strategy holds true throughout this fall game.
- 45:08One Mara Schell takes strike one, from Dean Chance, one or nothing to score, Mara Schell fits nine innings on Saturday, and beats the badgers.
- 45:19Oh, he is pitching with just a couple of days away, Chance fits right in height.
- 45:24Mara Schell goes for an outside pitch from all the way around, and a strike two.
- 45:28And Jim, these pitchers for opposing teams have pretty much of a call, they don't knock each other down, so to speak.
- 45:34They try not to side-hive each other, supposedly, but Chance has side-hived on Mara Schell's two consecutive times, two breaking walls,
- 45:41three-quarters, and Robinson backs up a third for the ground ball, and throws the killer bird first, and Mara Schell is the first stop, in the double the third.
- 45:52That will bring up Lou Brot, the ground is third back in the first inning.
- 45:56And Ashley leaves on the second inning lead off home run by Richie Allen, the scores one and nothing.
- 46:04Freehand behind the plate, killer bird first, true with second, after Sully at short,
- 46:08Robinson at third, is French in left, Aliva in center, caniglia all in right.
- 46:13Dean Chance for pitcher, ready to work to the left-handed hitting, Lou Brot.
- 46:18Brot takes strike one, and that was right down the middle.
- 46:22True is coming from his second base position, you almost half way depth.
- 46:27Looks Robinson on the fake run attempt by Brock, and the last pitch was about halfway between home plate and third base,
- 46:33so they're playing him for a tremendous speed.
- 46:35Gombal Karoo, over to his right, has it, and throws low to killer-oo, but he digs it off for the second half.
- 46:44That will bring up Roberto Cremetti, who has one of the two hits that the National League All-Stars have.
- 46:49Cremetti was a shot right, on or just in front of a place that hot-pie killer-oo had it.
- 46:54No one was covering first base, and Cremetti, who has seeded of his own,
- 46:57heated off for hit, later was forced by Hank Aaron.
- 47:02The sun has gone in momentarily, and the storm would tell this step,
- 47:06it is dropped to the green temperature, it is now 91.
- 47:11Hank Aaron on deck as Cremetti steps in. Cremetti will be 33 years old next month.
- 47:20Five from Gene Shantz, ball one, hitting 381 in all-star play before the game, he's already won for one.
- 47:27He is 9 for 22 as an all-star player.
- 47:30And Gene, you're here hitting instructors, talk about certain basics fundamentals,
- 47:33not pulling your head or stepping out of the box or stepping in the bucket.
- 47:37And Cremetti is one of those players that violates many of these fundamentals.
- 47:41He steps in the bucket, hits the ball hard to the opposite field, I guess.
- 47:45For some of the old-timers, it's reminiscent of the Nell Oss.
- 47:48Right one, and stands ready to work again on the one-on-one pitch,
- 47:51and this one again catches the outside corner, it is one and two.
- 47:55Cremetti with two down on the third, it's nationally won, American League is nothing.
- 48:02This, of course, will be the last inning that Gene Shantz can work.
- 48:07Outside and low this time, Shantz could lose the ball game,
- 48:12hopefully, of course, the American League can rally in the bottom of air third against Walmart as well.
- 48:16So many of the types of hitters that can look very bad on a breaking ball away from him and Lowell,
- 48:22and the very next pitch, you'll go out and lightly hit it to the opposite field out of the park.
- 48:26He's very difficult to pitch, you have to mix them up.
- 48:29This is the 2-2 pitch, and this one is outside and low, hopping by freehand, and it is three and two.
- 48:35There's not been a walk in the ball game yet.
- 48:40Gene Shantz this year has struck out 115 and walked 40.
- 48:47And like Marichela, it struck out 137 and walked 30.
- 48:50He does have pretty good control, all-doorless control.
- 48:53That's got Shantz in trouble last Friday night in the ninth inning against the Chicago White Sox,
- 48:58and he has a 2-1 earn run, and has lost 2-1 to the White Sox in an important game.
- 49:03Three and two to count now with Slametting, waiting for 3-2 pitch from Gene Shantz.
- 49:11Lowell, upstairs to the right.
- 49:15Still freehand, the quite captured behind the place for the American League was the hitterly All-Star Press Conference yesterday
- 49:21when discussing trying to catch Gene Shantz.
- 49:25Naturally, it's quite difficult for a catcher to step in and catch if the kid that he's not caught before is Slametting.
- 49:30He strikes out, first strike out, first hand, and so on, so hits, so errors.
- 49:34Not left, in the middle of the first, an action league won, and the American League nothing.
- 49:42Man, if you're like me, you like to keep something for yourself.
- 49:45Your razor, your shaving cream, your Gillette-like guard, and I can't blame you.
- 49:50The trouble is, when you keep the right guard to yourself, you leave your family to sense with it.
- 49:54And your family has their right to the right guard.
- 49:57It's a spray, they can all use it.
- 49:59Matter of fact, the right guard is the perfect personal family in York, because nothing touches you but the spray itself.
- 50:05Now keep your razor, eat your shaving cream, but please, care of the right guard.
- 50:10It's the family thing to do.
- 50:12And now it's time to try and eat Gillette-Folme shaving cream.
- 50:14Gillette-Folme has the mouth of smooth shaving comfort.
- 50:17In every can of you, Gillette-Folme, you get pillows, a freemly list,
- 50:21with the willing foamy lathers, and soaps heat down in your beard.
- 50:25Keeps it soft and moist right through your day.
- 50:28Nobody makes a lather like foamy.
- 50:30So moist, so rich, so free.
- 50:33And nobody makes a lather like Gillette.
- 50:45In Simpson-Mattonecoubeck and Buddy Blatner, we're moving to the bottom of the third inning.
- 50:49Bill Frehan, Rico Petrucelli, and I am sure Alpencitter for a billion cents.
- 50:56Dan's believe the ball game.
- 51:00Having given up two hits, one run, struck out one, and lost no one.
- 51:06And unless the American League ties it up or goes ahead, he could be the losing pitcher.
- 51:11Here's Bill Frehan of the Detroit Tigers, the catcher hitting 275,
- 51:17leaving off against Juan Marichel on the bottom of the third.
- 51:23Marichel ready with his first pitch, and it's out of play, strike one.
- 51:28Frehan was born and raised in Detroit.
- 51:30The player represented him once at the University of Michigan for a couple of years,
- 51:33got a big bonus, about $100,000.
- 51:35But then went back to Michigan on the offseason and got his degree.
- 51:39This is his fourth all-star game in his second start.
- 51:42He's two for three at bat, hitting 667.
- 51:45Last year, he had 12 home runs all year. This year, he's got 12 already.
- 51:51Marichel ready with the strike one pitch.
- 51:55Got on this time and fouled again, up to three, and back to the plate, and it strikes two.
- 52:00Bill Frehan, last year, the last couple of years, has hit 234.
- 52:04Three years ago, he hit over 307.
- 52:06Last couple of years, he's been hit by Pitchfalt a couple of times.
- 52:09When he hit 307, he was hit 10-11 times.
- 52:12This year, with another good year, he has already been hit 12 times in the first half of the season.
- 52:17He's like Pitchfalt, Marichel, he's called out on strikes.
- 52:23Jim McLaughlin continues to warm up for the American League,
- 52:25and looks like he will be the next pitcher that Hank Farrell will use.
- 52:28For the National League, Ferguson Jenkins, the right-hander of the Chicago Cubs, has gotten up,
- 52:33so it looks like he will be manager Walter Austin's second strike for the Mound Duty.
- 52:39Here's Rico Pettuselli.
- 52:41Garce McLaughlin, as we said, is from the California Angels, and a favorite on with rest,
- 52:45and Ferguson Jenkins is the most rested man for the National League.
- 52:49The goalie is on deck now.
- 52:52Hi, Pettuselli.
- 52:56It could be that Rico Pettuselli would have bruised wrists, some thought that he would not.
- 53:00He could go out, and the goalie coming in to bat for being chance could stay in, but we'll see.
- 53:07Here's the one ballpitch.
- 53:09Get high in the air, a chance for Bill Mazurowski in the short right field.
- 53:13The second baseman backs up, and has it for the second half.
- 53:23The applause is for Jim Fragosi.
- 53:25Let's judge stuff. Now, the California Angels, who's home here, of course, is in Anaheim, California.
- 53:32Fragosi stepping in to bat for Dean Chan, sitting at 280 with 7-home runs, 24 RBI.
- 53:37This is Jim's third all-star game. He started in 64, and he played last year.
- 53:43He's hitting 167 all-star play with one for this.
- 53:47Fragosi does have power, as we said he already has 7-home runs.
- 53:52Thumbs up with 2 down on the bottom of the third, and Ashley leading 1-0 on Richie Allum's home run on the second.
- 54:00Air shell ready with a side-arm pitch strike walk.
- 54:05Fragosi is one of the fine young players that has come along at the American League for a long time,
- 54:11and of course the Angels have many of these good young players on their ball clubs.
- 54:15Fragosi can hit with Howard Eaterfield, has great range at short,
- 54:18has a ball pull down the left field line. Another side-arm pitch for Marichael,
- 54:23that Fragosi got out in front of and lined very deep for Traus.
- 54:28It is strike two. Fragosi, of course, is seen with Bobby Cannat, the second baseman for the Angels,
- 54:33and they form this fine-to-double-play combination, as you'll ever want to see,
- 54:37breaking very close to Dean Alliam, Bill Maserati of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 54:49Down on the third, he strikes Fragosi the bench-shitter for Dean Cannat.
- 54:52Marichael throws an off-feed-fit, it stays low, and goes right through the legs of Joe Chorri.
- 54:57Chorri was injured in a run-down, and Joe now goes out, as though, I would imagine,
- 55:01and he was caught up on the signs, but Marichael waved at him, and Joe is now coming back.
- 55:07Joe was injured in a run-down play against the Phillies a couple of weeks ago,
- 55:11and missed part of few games of the brave. He was stepped on, back to the bench.
- 55:15One and two now, the count for Fragosi.
- 55:19Marichael with another, so far, brilliant, all-star pitching effort.
- 55:25He's allowed no hits, struck out free. Side-arm, low, gets away from Chorri, it's two-two.
- 55:30And Jim, now I believe they're going to have a conference with Pittsburgh for the last one.
- 55:34Joe Chorri stepped out to his right, as though he were going to receive a breaking ball,
- 55:38and the ball went off to his left. Marichael threw a fastball.
- 55:41Once again, he stepped out his right for the breaking ball, and the ball bounced off his chest protector.
- 55:46He got another fastball, so they're getting their signs straightened out right now.
- 55:51Two and two to come. Let's see how.
- 55:54National League One, American League Nothing, Dean Chance has completed his chores.
- 55:57Juan Marichael can pitch no longer after this, and Tony has pointed out, most likely Jim McLaughlin.
- 56:02Now the California Angels will come into pitch for the American League,
- 56:05Ferguson Jenkins of the Chicago Cup, for the National.
- 56:08Here's the two-two pitch, the side-arm delivery, road right back through the hole,
- 56:12and there's the first hit off Marichael.
- 56:14Fragosi takes the turn at first, and he comes back with a sink.
- 56:19And if you don't think that these Anaheim fans, like that, just look into this squad.
- 56:25That brings up Brooks Robinson with two down and a third,
- 56:30and Robinson does that, sir, eight home runs this year, 32 RBI.
- 56:37And the American League fans, as Tony said here at Anaheim, come to life.
- 56:41Their teams are training one-to-nothing strike one on the outside, caught up from Marichael.
- 56:48The American League has lost its last four all-star encounters in a row, and is training one-to-nothing right now.
- 56:56Like one pitch from Marichael, it's high. It is one-on-one to Brooks Robinson.
- 57:05And Becker's Rob Drew should he get pretend.
- 57:10Now the center's come back out again, but the temperatures dropped another degree,
- 57:13it is now nighty. It was nighty two at game time.
- 57:16There goes for Josie Gromvall. Overcomes Richie Allen.
- 57:20The third-person has Brooks Robinson by two or three steps for the third out.
- 57:24No Marichael is all through having given up one hit, striking out three and allowing no run.
- 57:29No runs, one hit, no errors, one left.
- 57:32At the end of three, an actually won the American League, nothing.
- 57:37Here's an announcement that answers today's problem of auto insurance cancellation.
- 57:41Allstate Insurance Company is announcing a revolutionary long-term renewal guarantee that applies to all auto insurance coverages.
- 57:4960 days after your insurance is enforced, you are protected by Allstate's five-year renewal guarantee.
- 57:56You simply renew each year with a policy and rates, then in effect.
- 58:01What's more, you're covered by Allstate's good driver plan, with rates lowered or raised by your own family driving record.
- 58:08The five-year guarantee stays in force as long as you and the other drivers in your family hold valid driver's licenses.
- 58:15In a nutshell, this means that during the guarantee period, you can cancel Allstate's chance, even if you have accidents.
- 58:24More than ever, you're in good hands with Allstate.
- 58:29Allstate's renewal guarantee is available in almost every state, but is not for the sign-riff or commercial vehicle.
- 58:36An hour we pause, 30 seconds for a station identification given in force.
- 58:42Do you still think of temporary office personnel as just fill-ins at vacation time?
- 58:46Let's think about this. Use Allstate Temporary Services on a regular standby basis, and you can instantly staff up or down at any time.
- 58:54That means there's no need for costly overstaffing on permanent payroll.
- 58:58It'll pay you to look into it. Look up Allstate, that's O-L-S-T-E-N, in the white pages of your phone book.
- 59:04All regularly scheduled programs canceled to bring you the All-Star Game on WNBC, AM & FM, New York.
- 59:11Back at Anaheim Stadium as the 38th All-Star Game continues, we have pitching changes and changes of field, and 30 of boats.
- 59:18And they're boats from the Angels, by the way. Here's also the voice of the California Angels, Buddy Blattman.
- 59:23Tim, thank you. Traveled out of the top half of any number forward, and actually gone top one to nothing.
- 59:28In the batter's box, Hank Aaron, he's over one in the ballgame. And on the mound, 23-year-old redhead, freckle-faced right-handed, Jim McLaughlin.
- 59:37A winner of eight and a loser of two, so far this year for the Angels.
- 59:41Hank Aaron, a slashing tight bidder up there in the picture. He's taken high for ball one.
- 59:47Underway in the top half of any number forward.
- 59:50Hank Aaron, born in Mobile, now lives in Wisconsin, and is 14th Major League season at the age of 33. Already he has collected better than 2500 hits.
- 1:00:01And a fish. It's a curve, it's a beauty, it spins in, and evens the count of ball one is right one.
- 1:00:07So Hank Aaron, still going strong at 33, should reach the 3,000-hit plateau in his great career.
- 1:00:15That's what's one of my cards. A diving shot by Fred Dopey, and Jim can't make a play.
- 1:00:20Fred Dopey now starts diving for third base. He's got this one off.
- 1:00:25So a part of play for Jim is the base hit for Hank Aaron.
- 1:00:32Hank is on. He has a stolen base in this ballgame.
- 1:00:35And here comes the baby bull. Orlando's defeated. Big, wrong right-handed hitter.
- 1:00:40He operates McClose Sands and has that bat right down on the end. He has the little pop straight away, and of course, the...
- 1:00:47Getting 356 this year in his 10th Major League season.
- 1:00:51Orlando Sopeta. The curve ball is up to two high for ball one.
- 1:00:55Nobody out here in the top of the fourth inning. And Hank Aaron in first base.
- 1:00:59An extra-legant bat and they lead one to nothing.
- 1:01:02Sopeta with a 307 lifetime mark.
- 1:01:08Led the league in home runs with 46 back in 1961. The pitch to him. Slung on a ground ball.
- 1:01:14Third base. Brooks Robinson in the second one. The first base.
- 1:01:17And they get a pair. Well done.
- 1:01:19And a great pivot here by Rodney Caru. The rookie second base of Minnesota Quinn.
- 1:01:24The double play started by Brooks Robinson.
- 1:01:27And ball can he handle that. Leathered his third base.
- 1:01:31That's about right, but he's of course talking about the flop and you see it off a lot of him.
- 1:01:35And he has a low ball pitch. He has a very good sinker.
- 1:01:38And of course, he gets a lot of ground balls and his in-fielders get a lot of double play chances.
- 1:01:43Certainly does. This young man has come of age since spring training.
- 1:01:46Here's the guy who has made the difference in the ball game. Richie Allen.
- 1:01:49Fireball right-handed hitter. He homers. And the floor reaches the right center in the second.
- 1:01:54He takes a breaking ball for strike one.
- 1:01:56Richie Allen. And the next pitch. Swung on. He flares this one foul and on a play down the right field line.
- 1:02:02It will settle in the lower gear. Strike two.
- 1:02:06Richie Allen.
- 1:02:08Oh, in his fourth year now, the Major League.
- 1:02:11Commands a salary of $75,000.
- 1:02:14The most ever paid a man in his fourth year of Major League play.
- 1:02:19Third ball. And kind of weighs it this way.
- 1:02:25Striking out. And cruising right to the top of the fourth inning in here.
- 1:02:29Gentlemen, welcome. Strikeout number one for Jim.
- 1:02:31In the top of the fourth inning, the National League no runs.
- 1:02:34They picked up a hit and nobody left on base.
- 1:02:36Store at the end of three and a half. The National League won. The American League, nothing.
- 1:02:41Four play-to-play. And the first line in premium I have no idea exactly what that means.
- 1:02:47The Booth Herbert of Detroit admits he gets confused with tire stores.
- 1:02:52When it comes to buying a tire, I just have to go along with what the salesman says.
- 1:02:56We showed Mr. Herbert how he could pick out his next tires himself at BF Goodrich.
- 1:03:01He'd do it with the tire calculator.
- 1:03:03He'd ask you some questions about your driving, about the speeds and roads and so on.
- 1:03:08Then it tells you which BFG tires suit you best.
- 1:03:11What did Mr. Herbert think of this?
- 1:03:13I think it's a very good idea.
- 1:03:15Very good. You can figure out exactly what kind of tire your car needs.
- 1:03:19Which as I said before, something that's always confused me.
- 1:03:22I think it's a great idea.
- 1:03:23A great idea. The tire calculator.
- 1:03:26Come in and try it at BF Goodrich. The Straight Talk Tire People.
- 1:03:30The Straight Talk Tire People are ready for you now at any BF Goodrich store or dealer.
- 1:03:35Next to the elevators for the name of the one nearest to you.
- 1:03:38Moving down to the bottom of the fourth inning, again, buddy's left.
- 1:03:41Alright Jim, thank you. And on the mound for the National League, the Tall Lean Right-Hander.
- 1:03:48Ferguson Jenkins, he's 6'5", gets a lot of leverage. He needs to throw hard.
- 1:03:5323 years of age, makes his home in Canada, Ontario.
- 1:03:57First man he'll face here, the last half of inning number four, will be Rob Caru.
- 1:04:02And what a job this young man has done.
- 1:04:05Rob Caru, who was born in Panama and then moved into New York.
- 1:04:10High school age, and a rather strange thing too.
- 1:04:13Rob Caru was picked up by a Minnesota scout, playing in Central Park.
- 1:04:17And was picked up by a part-time scout who was a policeman.
- 1:04:21And it was his area of Central Park in New York.
- 1:04:25And he has told me to me to stop this pair of hands that I have seen in a long, long time.
- 1:04:30He has outstanding speed, good back control.
- 1:04:33But defensively, those soft hands and a good arm.
- 1:04:36Right-hand buddy, rather, and of course, Caru is, as you mentioned, very fast hit from the left side.
- 1:04:42And Caru has been timed in the 100-yard dash in less than 9.7 seconds, so he can fly.
- 1:04:48And this National League defense will have to state him in close.
- 1:04:51Rob Caru.
- 1:04:52All right, here we go. We view playing the last half of inning number four, Rob Caru, at the plate.
- 1:04:58And his rookie tour through the American League is average at 3.13.
- 1:05:03He's all for one in this ballgame, sending Lou Brock to the wall for his long drive in the first.
- 1:05:07Ferguson Jenkins is on the mound.
- 1:05:10And the big rod henna delivers a pitch of swung on it high in the air down the right field line.
- 1:05:14Foul territory, and this one will grip out of play.
- 1:05:17A buddy in pursuit, but no chance for this one.
- 1:05:21Strike one to Rob Caru to be followed by Tony Oliva and then Harmon Killebrew.
- 1:05:27Ferguson Jenkins has been a release pitcher for the Chicago Cubs and manager Leo DeRotra first.
- 1:05:33The beginning of this year and all of last year, but with Kenny Holstman and Wolfhander going into the service,
- 1:05:38Jenkins has been put into the starting rotation and done very well.
- 1:05:41He certainly has done just that. And his next pitch.
- 1:05:45The curve ball bounces up there and gets away from Torrey, and the cop moves on now to Paul 1 and strike one on Rob Caru.
- 1:05:51The outfield is about straight away.
- 1:05:56The difference in the ball game, the home run by Richie Allen in the second.
- 1:06:01Nice to leg one, the American leg nothing.
- 1:06:04And now the 1-1 delivery. Swung on a ground wall, foul outside first base, and this one close to the line.
- 1:06:09Ball one and strike two.
- 1:06:12Well the American league kind of talking about this year because they won in 1937, 1947 and 1957.
- 1:06:20So they think possibly, the forearm rolls through, they could capture this one, and they trail by a run.
- 1:06:27Jenkins ready and the big man delivers.
- 1:06:31But just swung on and rolls foul back towards the base of the three.
- 1:06:34No change in the count at 12, one and strike two, nobody out and nobody on.
- 1:06:38Play here in the last half of any number four.
- 1:06:42Jenkins pretty much is a fast ball pitcher. He tries to overpower the hitters.
- 1:06:46Although this year he has come up with a little bit of a full curve which has made a much more effective.
- 1:06:51The river's outside now and the count level is just two and two on Rob Caru.
- 1:06:56Rob now asking for the Rosenberg.
- 1:06:59I can remember this spring.
- 1:07:02His manager, the manager of Jenkins, Leo DeRotter telling us that this young man was going to be awfully good.
- 1:07:08And last year with Philadelphia and the Cums, Jenkins a sixth game winner.
- 1:07:13He has come on strong as predicted.
- 1:07:16But just swung on foul back up towards the press box.
- 1:07:19It's wall two and strike two.
- 1:07:21Rob Caru is going to be taken away up there at home plate.
- 1:07:25The manager of the California Angels, Bill Rigney, the coaches box is third.
- 1:07:31And the press, the little guy and flutter guy, Eddie Sankey, the manager of the white box now in first place in the American League, the coach at first base.
- 1:07:39Ed Runge who lives in San Diego, working behind the plate.
- 1:07:44And the pitch.
- 1:07:46Swung on. This will get high in the air.
- 1:07:48In the center field it belongs to Hank Aaron.
- 1:07:50Hank is under it.
- 1:07:52And Hank's under this one for Rob number one.
- 1:07:57Here comes Tony Oly.
- 1:07:59Tony, the strikeout victim in the first.
- 1:08:05Tony from Cuba, six feet two. He weighs 190 pounds, 26 years of age.
- 1:08:12He led the American League in hitting his first two years.
- 1:08:15Last year he was second.
- 1:08:18A lifetime average in the American League of 318. He's a great one.
- 1:08:23Takes a big change of pace outside, looks it over well. It's wall one.
- 1:08:29One out of nobody on the last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:08:34Aliva got off to a very full start. This year mainly through injury problems.
- 1:08:38All ribcage muscles, whole muscle is legs, various other injuries.
- 1:08:42He started to hit in about the last two or three weeks.
- 1:08:44He's gotten his average up considerably.
- 1:08:46He's just a good hitter, Tony. He'll be up there when the season is over.
- 1:08:49And now Jenkins spends a curve ball across.
- 1:08:51Even the counted ball one in strike one.
- 1:08:55Jenkins quickly ready and the one one delivery.
- 1:08:58Swung on in a long wave.
- 1:09:00Wow, upstairs down the right field line.
- 1:09:02Wall one in strike two.
- 1:09:04After one thing a year, mid-season the stadium just becomes engulfed with straightness.
- 1:09:10For the American League missing badly, Frank Robinson and Al Kline
- 1:09:15have two top hitters in the American League. They're both out with injuries.
- 1:09:20The next delivery.
- 1:09:23And Tony Aliva kind of clicks this when Fowler stays on the left.
- 1:09:26He just crazed it away.
- 1:09:28So he stays alive up there. Wall one in strike two.
- 1:09:33Tony Aliva is a good low ball, low fastball hitter.
- 1:09:36Also a pretty good off-season catch hitter.
- 1:09:38He can hit the breaking wall and the slider.
- 1:09:40What most possible try to do,
- 1:09:42I don't know if the California Angels do too,
- 1:09:44try to jam him, hit him inside on the fist with high fastball.
- 1:09:48He has the ability to follow these pitches off though many times as he did this last one.
- 1:09:51That's right. That wide spread same.
- 1:09:53He'll go to the opposite field.
- 1:09:54Now, this is feeling the ground ball up the middle into center field for a base hit.
- 1:09:58Tony Aliva is on.
- 1:10:00That is hit number two for the American League.
- 1:10:02The other one, a base hit, nice up the middle by Jim Fragosi in the third.
- 1:10:06Here is Harman Killebrew.
- 1:10:09Big man of the Minnesota twins.
- 1:10:13And he is some kind of big strong.
- 1:10:155 feet 11, 210 pounds.
- 1:10:19Harman now 31 years of age in his 11th full season in the Major League.
- 1:10:24He has collected already 336 home runs.
- 1:10:32Five times he has hit 40 or more home runs in a season.
- 1:10:35And four times he has hit the American League.
- 1:10:38He swings it a curve, gets a piece of this and then files it back towards the base of the screen.
- 1:10:43Black one, the Killebrew.
- 1:10:45And if you play here in the last half of any number four, one out and Tony Aliva without standing,
- 1:10:50feet at first base.
- 1:10:52On back, Tony Kinningley-Harrows.
- 1:10:54Killebrew, none for one in the ball game.
- 1:10:56That's right away there.
- 1:10:58And that's squeezing the shot out of that fat handle.
- 1:11:01This is those calling cards for Tony Aliva throwing by Jenkins, driving Tony back to the bag.
- 1:11:08The outfield, front toward left and deep.
- 1:11:11And the curve ball and he plants this one far up on the screen.
- 1:11:15It gets up there towards the front box.
- 1:11:17Strike two.
- 1:11:18And I think Harman would like to have that pitch back, buddy, because it was a breaking ball that Jenkins got up in his eyes
- 1:11:24and he had a very good cut at it.
- 1:11:26It was out in front of it perfectly, but just got under it slightly.
- 1:11:29So far so right.
- 1:11:31He was a little bit off balance.
- 1:11:34Aliva.
- 1:11:36Not a commanding lead off for his face.
- 1:11:38That's a fast ball thrown by Jenkins.
- 1:11:41Wall one and strike two.
- 1:11:46The biggest crowd ever.
- 1:11:48Mannaheim stadium, good total around 46,000.
- 1:11:53Rakey stuff outside.
- 1:11:55It's wall two and strike two on Killebrew.
- 1:11:58Deep at third base is Richie Allen.
- 1:12:03So we have quite a contrast now in the pitching combinations from the starter.
- 1:12:08Mara, Shell and Chance with a lot of motion.
- 1:12:12Two men working now with more fluid delivery.
- 1:12:14Cliter over the outside corner, he's got them looking.
- 1:12:17And that is strikeout number one for Ferguson Jenkins.
- 1:12:21There comes Tony Canigliereau.
- 1:12:23Tony would like to have this guy's chance as far as the career is concerned on his fourth year in the major league at the age of 22.
- 1:12:29Buddy, I'd like to have John in my entire nine year major league career, what he's done in just his short two.
- 1:12:34He's hit a lot of home runs as an ideal ballpark for him.
- 1:12:37A good full hitter and he can hit that fence in Fenway Park.
- 1:12:40He certainly can.
- 1:12:4184 home runs this first three years.
- 1:12:43Her ball is too low.
- 1:12:44Wall one, there are two odds and Tony will leave at first base.
- 1:12:48In action, league one, the American league nothing.
- 1:12:51Way in the lab, sad with any number four.
- 1:12:56Now Tony goes over to his first base coach, Eddie Stankett, he gets straight on some signs.
- 1:13:01He possibly, healthy missed the steal sign from the third base coach, Bill Rigney.
- 1:13:06So, he's got it straightened out.
- 1:13:08That ball that Tony Canigliereau is inside for ball two.
- 1:13:12Tony is over one, flying out to Roberto Coletti in shallow life center field in the second.
- 1:13:18The outfield is a source of respect in his power.
- 1:13:21They're about straight away.
- 1:13:23They just a bit into left center, is the centerfielder Aaron.
- 1:13:27They do nothing but the runner starts to pitch his best to go to second base.
- 1:13:31They're going again, he's on a second base.
- 1:13:34That wraps it up for the American league here in the last half, hitting number four.
- 1:13:38No runs, a base hit and no one left on base.
- 1:13:41And it's toward the end of four.
- 1:13:43Nice to league all stars, one of the American league all stars, nothing.
- 1:13:48And now our word from Bill Garazula.
- 1:13:51In 1955, the key word for the Brooklyn Dodgers was first.
- 1:13:55They won the first ten games of the season, setting the league record.
- 1:13:58They clinked the National League pen and on September 8th.
- 1:14:01The first team ever to do it that early.
- 1:14:03And they topped it all off by winning the World Series, bringing Brooklyn its first world championship.
- 1:14:09Eight years earlier, in 1947, Pricer Corporation scored a first of its own.
- 1:14:14In that year, Pricer set up its master technician service conference.
- 1:14:18The oldest and largest training program in the auto industry.
- 1:14:22This conference, devising to monthly sessions held at local Pricer Plymouth and Dodge dealers,
- 1:14:27keeps experienced technicians up to date on the latest service techniques.
- 1:14:31Or even more advanced instructions, these sessions also receive visits from the Pricer Mobile Training Center.
- 1:14:37Sort of a technical school on wheels.
- 1:14:40All this adds up to the best possible care for your car and you.
- 1:14:44Customer care and exclusive at your Pricer Plymouth and Dodge dealers.
- 1:14:51We roll right along in this little game.
- 1:14:53It's now the top half of hitting number five.
- 1:14:55The National League on top one's enough.
- 1:14:57It's a difference.
- 1:14:58The home run by Ricky Allen in the second.
- 1:15:00He really pumped that one hard.
- 1:15:02Over the wall in deep right center field and into the bleachers.
- 1:15:06Joe Torrey at the plate.
- 1:15:08The catchers of the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:15:10Our right-handed hitter, McCloff and the Leverage.
- 1:15:13Here's a ground ball at Jim Frigoti.
- 1:15:15A nice big convenient hop and Jim throws out stories.
- 1:15:18Who is lucky, you saw him out by forty feet.
- 1:15:22One man away, bringing about Bill Mazurotti.
- 1:15:25Bill is over at one of the ball games.
- 1:15:27He bounced off to the shortstop at that time.
- 1:15:30Rico Petroselli in the second.
- 1:15:36From Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Bill Mazurotti.
- 1:15:39In his 12th major league season at the age of 30.
- 1:15:42Here's a cherry ball thrown here by Jim McLaughlin.
- 1:15:44Strike one.
- 1:15:46Dean Stance, cheering through the first three,
- 1:15:49gave up one run.
- 1:15:50The home run by Ricky Allen.
- 1:15:55The next delivery by the redhead.
- 1:15:57He's pumped it right down the middle.
- 1:15:59He threw it hard for strike two.
- 1:16:06Jim McLaughlin, the age of 23.
- 1:16:08It's Cumberbane as a major league pitcher.
- 1:16:11The two strike delivery, swung on a ground ball at Frigoti,
- 1:16:13digs it out, straightens up,
- 1:16:15and throws out Mazurotti.
- 1:16:17Two outs here in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:16:21And here comes Gene Alley.
- 1:16:23The young man who has come on strong in the past two years.
- 1:16:26From Richmond, Virginia.
- 1:16:29And Dean was 27 years of age yesterday.
- 1:16:33All splendid right handed it here.
- 1:16:35Two outs and nobody on the top of the fifth.
- 1:16:38Alley is over one.
- 1:16:40Fetched by McLaughlin, the curve,
- 1:16:42over the outside corner.
- 1:16:44Strike one over the outer edge of the plate for strike one.
- 1:16:51Mary Walker, the coach of third.
- 1:16:53Herman Slanks at first base.
- 1:16:55Mass wall, he had him jammed,
- 1:16:57but it's inside, ball one in strike one.
- 1:17:01How do you see so many pitchers come up
- 1:17:03in your tenure as a broadcaster
- 1:17:05and see so many with the great ability that McLaughlin,
- 1:17:07but he seems to have that quality of maturity
- 1:17:10that's poison on the mound, nothing seems to rattle him.
- 1:17:13And that has come about in only the past three months, Tony.
- 1:17:16Still a young man that's thrown the ball hard
- 1:17:18without much of a purpose.
- 1:17:21He had never had command of the ball game,
- 1:17:23and now he does. He's nice and free and easy out there.
- 1:17:25The count two and one on Alley the next pitch.
- 1:17:27And he thunders it down the middle.
- 1:17:29And the redhead's thrown hard.
- 1:17:31Ball two and strike two.
- 1:17:33He's seemingly put it all together in the months of May.
- 1:17:37And it's unusual this young man is now in his sixth year
- 1:17:40of professional pitchings.
- 1:17:42And always it's kind of flopped around.
- 1:17:44The two-two pitch, curve ball,
- 1:17:45fouled back and out of play by Gene Alley.
- 1:17:47No change in the count as wall two and strike two.
- 1:17:49There are two out here on the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:17:52Nicely, Guadani, American League, nothing.
- 1:17:56McLaughlin seems to be indicative of what's happening
- 1:17:58to this entire California ball club, doesn't he buddy?
- 1:18:01This whole ball club could be shut up.
- 1:18:03They are coming of age.
- 1:18:05They're putting things together and winning a lot of ball games.
- 1:18:07They sure are. They won twenty-six, twenty-four
- 1:18:09and last thirty-five.
- 1:18:11There's this in-foot ball strike three.
- 1:18:14So McLaughlin records strikeout number two
- 1:18:17and makes the league down without commotion here
- 1:18:20in the top of the fifth inning, down in order
- 1:18:22and nothing to cross in the score.
- 1:18:24At the end, the four and a half makes the league one
- 1:18:26and the American League nothing.
- 1:18:28Well, now that summer is in full swing,
- 1:18:30are you spending much time outdoors?
- 1:18:32You know, sun and wind and swimming
- 1:18:34can be great in limited doses.
- 1:18:36But too much can leave your eyes
- 1:18:38swarming in bloodshot.
- 1:18:40And once you let tired eyes slow you down,
- 1:18:42get help fast with double action,
- 1:18:4420-20 eye drop.
- 1:18:46Now, just a couple of drops to 20-20
- 1:18:48will relieve and clear up tired bloodshot eyes in minutes.
- 1:18:50You see, 20-20 is medicated.
- 1:18:52And acts as a decongestant too.
- 1:18:54Reduce swelling and swelling
- 1:18:56close work, like lights, your blazing sun,
- 1:18:58smoke, or any of these external irritations
- 1:19:00can cause pain, swelling and redness.
- 1:19:02And double action is 20-20 soothes fast,
- 1:19:04relieves fast, soothes and clears your tired eyes.

- 1:19:08and easy to use any way and any time at all.

- 1:19:12use double action 20-20.
- 1:19:14And you can see that you're getting
- 1:19:16a lot of relief in your eyes.
- 1:19:18And you can see that you're getting
- 1:19:20a lot of relief in your eyes.
- 1:19:22And you can see that you're getting
- 1:19:24a lot of relief in your eyes.
- 1:19:26And you can use double action 20-20
- 1:19:28and just remember to carry along
- 1:19:30the two-way eye drop soothing,
- 1:19:32cleansing 20-20.
- 1:19:34Right finger there,
- 1:19:36holding Canikli arrow.
- 1:19:48Ready for action now on the last half
- 1:19:50of any number five.
- 1:19:52Tony can equally arrow waves at a curve doesn't get it strike one Tony is over one now
- 1:19:58Captain for the National League Tom Haller at San Francisco Giants
- 1:20:02Galea Fenske to follow another curve same result one on and missed by Tony it's like two
- 1:20:11Ferguson Jenkins is on the mound big right-handed pitcher for Chicago's Cubs
- 1:20:20after the angels have won 25 of their last 33
- 1:20:25that just one on it high in the air back towards the screen in pursuit Tom Haller
- 1:20:30looks up and this one lands atop the screen and the cap remains back to
- 1:20:34funny we've got a little more activity in the American League's goal and a left-hander
- 1:20:38Gary Peters of the White Sox has begun the throw down there so he may be the next
- 1:20:43pitcher for manager Hank Bauer
- 1:20:46the parade of talent continues it's like you on Tony can equally arrow
- 1:20:59Jenkins now on top of the man looks in to accept the sign from Tom Haller and the
- 1:21:06two-strike delivery one on and missed he got him on strike
- 1:21:10I got number two for Jenkins no Tony it is kind of strange with all this awesome
- 1:21:20display of power and talent on hand still the command of the game is that little
- 1:21:27patch of real estate right out there in the center of the dialer. The pitcher seemed to control in games like this. That's about right and of course I saw the
- 1:21:34Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankee ball club. Four games straight on the
- 1:21:40strength of their pitching and of course that was the year that Merrith had a good
- 1:21:43year Manel had a good year Howard had a good year so that's good pitching will
- 1:21:47usually beat that good hitting. Carl Yatremke now to play the left one foul on the first
- 1:21:53base line for strike one. Carl a strikeout victim in the second facing Juan Merrith
- 1:21:57Michelle the next celebrity. This one grabbed the outer end. He fell high for strike two and Jenkins tough and hard.
- 1:22:06All in two to Carl Yatremke. Now in his seventh year of play with the Boston Red Sox
- 1:22:13he's 27 years of age. The curve is low. All one strike two. And Yatremke a complete ball player.
- 1:22:25A great outfielder with a strong throwing arm and he has speed. A hundred thousand dollar bonus baby.
- 1:22:32That time he attended the University of Notre Dame. Best ball outside. It's two and two. One out of nobody on the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:22:40The National League won the American League nothing. Yatremke has never had this good home run start and apparently he's
- 1:22:47pulling the ball more this year. He's gotten away from trying to hit that left field fence and ten ways hard.
- 1:22:52Absolutely. A line drive towards center field. Aaron comes in the ball gets high. Yatremke towards second base.
- 1:22:58And he'll check you in there. And quite likely he's out of this as a double.
- 1:23:02As a line drive to another ball in that towards center field. Hank Aaron came in trying to pick it off his shoes off.
- 1:23:07He gets away from it. It'll be a double for Carl Yatremke. Yes. You know you were mentioning Tony about him
- 1:23:17throwing the ball. He is now. He has always previously gone into the opposite field. His high is amazing.
- 1:23:23Ligur is 20 home runs. And already this year he is selected 19. The tying run now at second base and one out.
- 1:23:32Tying run being carried by Yatremke. Bill Freehand at the plate. He checks his swing and takes loan outside for ball one.
- 1:23:40Freehand struck out in the third. Bill off to a good start this year. The past two seasons he has just been battered and beaten to a pulp.
- 1:23:49With injuries. Periodically and damaging injuries for the past two years. An outstanding receiver is Bill Freehand.
- 1:24:00Her ball misses the outside corner. Two and a O to Bill Freehand.
- 1:24:06The reason you have activity now in the bullpen is Jim McLaughlin is scheduled next.
- 1:24:13They two and nothing fits. Over the inside corner and Bill Freehand not real happy with the call made here by the play down fire and run.
- 1:24:28Ball two and strike one. Now the American League home run leaders. In fact the major league home run leader is Frank Howard who is not selected to play in the
- 1:24:39dream game. But his swing on it popped up. Shallow and left field and zipping back on the outfield grass is Gene Alley and he puts this one away for out number two.
- 1:24:52Here comes the mix.
- 1:24:59Nicky Matlin. That's from Nunnidip response from the fans here in Black Dallas. Banned innovation for Nicky Matlin.
- 1:25:23Nicky Matlin. You know Tony manager Walter Alton of the National League now. I think you're a nice thing. He is called a conference at the mound and I believe this is called primarily to allow all these fans to just have open vent of their emotions regarding
- 1:25:49Nicky Matlin to give him the the ovation of the course he so rightly deserves at the age of 36 now and his 17th year of play with the Yankees.
- 1:25:59Buddy another thing about that is manager Walter Alton is playing to win also and he wants to go out to talk to Jenkins. There is a base open.
- 1:26:06The man on second base with two outs, a right hander coming up to that after man, little for Gulfies. But Alton also knows that these people want to see Nicky here.
- 1:26:15So let's see what the season he made. That's right. Nicky Matlin. Deep in the batter's box. He swings and doesn't get it if that falls at own potential.
- 1:26:25One strike one. Nicky Matlin better than 500 home runs in his tremendous career and makes it now and will take daddy on 600. He's feeling good this year playing at first base. That's more alone away.
- 1:26:49Ragosi on deck should man'll keep things going here in the last half of the fifth. He outfields towards right empty.
- 1:26:56Fastball. One hundred missed by the Mc and he had a violent swing at this one. Fastball about letter high. His ball won. Strike two. So Mc had one caught in mind. Put the American League on top. Two to one.
- 1:27:20And Nicky Matlin hitting for Jim McLaughlin. And young Jim working two innings in this ball game giving up no runs only one hit. And facing but six men in two innings. Striking out a pair.
- 1:27:33We are. Left hander from Houston has begun to warm up now. Buddy in the National League's bullpen. And the two to two fish.
- 1:27:40Fastball on the outside corner and Matlin pulled out the crisis. Back in for the American League in the last half of the fifth inning. And strike out number three for Ferguson Jenkins.
- 1:27:51No runs. The base is doubled by Eugenio M.F. Donvay and the score at the end of five remains. The National League All-Stars won the American League All-Stars. Nothing.
- 1:28:05Hey Mitch suddenly I've got an itch to switch to one of those new longer cigarettes. Great sketch. Then switch. But there's only one hitch Mitch. I don't know which to switch to.
- 1:28:15Well pardon the pitch but there's only one long cigarette to which you should switch. Switch Mitch. Switch. The new super king size Winston.
- 1:28:25Is there any other after all anyone can make a cigarette long. Not how long you make it. You make it long.
- 1:28:36And how does Winston make it long with an extra measure of that famous good taste that has made Winston America's largest selling cigarette.
- 1:28:45So if you've got an itch to switch to a long cigarette but don't know which to switch to switch to the new Winston super king.
- 1:28:55It's just.
- 1:29:09Well back to action out the big A. Anaheim stadium in Anaheim California. It's a one to nothing bargain. The National League and Gary Peter left hander.
- 1:29:18The Chicago White Sox is now on the mound.
- 1:29:23Now coming out of the dugout buddy I'll let you tell who it is. I hope they'll know from your applause in just a moment to say hey guys it's Willie May.
- 1:29:33Ferguson Jenkins now to play it on the mound Gary Peter. So for this year Gary is one in and lost for fastball.
- 1:29:40Grab the outer edge for Black One.
- 1:29:45Peters has a very good thinker also a hard slider and he's a big slow overhand curve ball and a lot of left hand hitters.
- 1:29:52Ningen kind of wants to kick up and throw hard. He throws a fastball right on by Jenkins here for strike two.
- 1:29:59The two Mays to follow.
- 1:30:05The two strike pitch is on the way to curve ball. This one gets away from Gary. Throw a tie and away. All one in strike two.
- 1:30:15The top of the sixth. Each floor clap with three hits. But the big one won an excellent home run hit by Richie Allen.
- 1:30:23They leave things off in the second. And Jenkins now walking back for a new weapon.
- 1:30:33Don't think he'd be that strong. Don't need to check his swing and break a bat.
- 1:30:37I couldn't see. Possibly there was some tape on the handle of his bat that was too close to the barrel of the bat against regulations.
- 1:30:43And Ed Rungy the plate umpire saw something wrong. Obviously had to send Ferguson Jenkins back to the dugout.
- 1:30:51All right we're set to go. Ball one is right to Jenkins.
- 1:30:56Gary Peters delivers.
- 1:31:00And again the curve ball slips out of the side of his hand. Traveling high and away for ball two. It's two and two.
- 1:31:12He's right handed all the way and fits one on and he flares this one foul into the dugout. The next to the league all-stars scattered a little talent.
- 1:31:21Peters has that plenty of rest. We saw him pitch the ball game against the Minnesota twins in Comiskey Park, Coyote.
- 1:31:28So he's in the right field. Back goes to Nigliao near the track to capture this one.
- 1:31:32And Jenkins gets a good beat for the ball. There's a long way into the right field. Here comes Willie May.
- 1:31:42That's a good one.
- 1:31:47That's a ball that's above the knee towards the outer edge for strike one.
- 1:31:51Willie better than 4,600 hits in his great career. 542 home runs as he began the season.
- 1:32:00Back ball one not in this. A little close to this bat ball up around the letters of Willie May. One out. Nobody on.
- 1:32:09The top of the sixth.
- 1:32:13Willie May now lives in San Francisco. He was born in Alabama.
- 1:32:17Back ball got him on strike. Just got a neatly mid-outside corner and just above the knees of Willie.
- 1:32:24So his pattern here was in and out and up and down. Moved the ball around in an excellent fashion against Willie May.
- 1:32:33And for Gary Peters that is strikeout number one. And here comes Roberto Clemente. An infield base hit in the first.
- 1:32:40With a big chance on the amount of that time, he'll have mesmerized and then go over to cover it.
- 1:32:44Although I think with the speed of Clemente he would have beaten it anyway.
- 1:32:47Roberto Clemente.
- 1:32:52And outstanding hit it. One of the very best.
- 1:32:55He takes inside ball one. It's only mentioned previously. So many different hitting styles on display by these talented men today.
- 1:33:04There's no one set way.
- 1:33:07Thanks Clemente. Low sun conventional.
- 1:33:11He swings a pilot swing here and drives his foul up against the screen. It's ball one and strike one.
- 1:33:17It's good for the young men. I think around the country too to see a ball game like this. Only because they then see that there is no set and patented way to walk to the plate and go about the work of hitting.
- 1:33:29That's right buddy. A young boy has to realize his own capabilities. It's great. Everything else has to be considered. So he has to use the skill that he was given.
- 1:33:38And the strike two on Roberto Clemente. He's been actually in the top of the six with two outs and nobody on. All one strike two to count in the fifth for the left handers.
- 1:33:48And clearly that's a few. He's got him looking. Right guard. Number two. So Jerry Peters knocked down an actually in order here in the top of the six.
- 1:33:56Three up straight on. Nothing to draw.
- 1:33:59And to start the end of five and a half. The National League one and the American League nothing.
- 1:34:04I heard a man say to me and it kind of threw me off completely where this is a full flight.
- 1:34:10I want to tell you this is a full four flight. I don't know.
- 1:34:14That's George. He was telling us about his experience buying tires.
- 1:34:19I go I look for tires. Tell me it's a good tire.
- 1:34:23He never asked me what kind of driving I do where I drive how I drive.
- 1:34:26I told Mr. Medwar come to BF Goodrich. Ask you all those questions with our tire calculator and the calculator will tell you which BF Goodrich tires suits you best and cost you least.
- 1:34:38What did he think of our tire calculator?
- 1:34:40You have something I did more realistically how to choose a tire.
- 1:34:44I think he's very helpful. Very helpful. The tire calculator. Try it next time at BF Goodrich. The straight talk tire people.
- 1:34:52Help yourself with our calculator and some straight talk.
- 1:34:56BF Goodrich store dealer. One nearest to you. Listen. In your yellow face.
- 1:35:01I'm on the six-pillars again.
- 1:35:03All right Jim.
- 1:35:05Some changes defensively for the National League as the American League comes to bat down the last 10 to 6.
- 1:35:12Willie Mays is now stationed in Centrifield in Hank Aaron and has moved around the left.
- 1:35:17In the batters box for the American League Jim Frigosa. Jim is number one.
- 1:35:21And taken to Liberty Hill and Jim takes five. Ball one.
- 1:35:25Park frog of the Angels Jim Frigosa. Still a young man but down his 60 year of Major League play at the age of 25.
- 1:35:32And buddy looking over the American League race who would have thought the Angels would be in the position they are right now as the same goes for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:35:42Actually they've got some fine young ball players and they're threatening for a pennant.
- 1:35:45That's right. Now ball one is strike one to Jim.
- 1:35:48Yet the Angels buried in last place on June the 7th.
- 1:35:53Good thinking fastball thrown here by Jenkins. Jim swings over it and the count is one and two.
- 1:35:59Brooks Robinson will follow and then Rod Karoo. Ferguson Jenkins on the mound doing quite a job.
- 1:36:06Juan Marichel works the first three. Jim swings in a bad ball doesn't get it.
- 1:36:12He strikes out. Strike out number four for Jenkins. Here comes Brooks Robinson.
- 1:36:19Brooks no luck in two tries. Slight is rolled out of the infield.
- 1:36:24Well the National League Bob Gibson is up now buddy in the bullpen so we'll see if Walter Austin will use him.
- 1:36:31The curve ball is long on in mid. By Brooks Robinson and Brooks he had his pitch there.
- 1:36:36He was thrown high by Jenkins. And Brooks was in full this kind of swing right on through it. Strike one.
- 1:36:46Next pitch is one on a long drive in the left field. The ball blocks me not holding. It is gone.
- 1:36:51It's a home run and a brand new game.
- 1:37:04So Brooks Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles. They're great third basemen. Sales one out of here in left field.
- 1:37:11And it's a one to one ball game. So it's been a long ball out here.
- 1:37:17The National League run a home run by Richie Allen. So Brooks Robinson gets the American League on board
- 1:37:25and they draw even down this ball game in the last half for six this one and one.
- 1:37:29And the curve swings and flares it all foul. On the left field side the mezzanine section.
- 1:37:35Strike one.
- 1:37:37Buddy the high breaking ball that Robinson got and you said was his pitch and he just missed.
- 1:37:41He got right back once more and hit it out of the ballpark.
- 1:37:44He sure did. The curve is none for two. He swings. Got a bad ball here. Try to check his swing but he figures on this one for strike two.
- 1:37:54And the one ball game the last half of the six. One out. Donnie Oliva will follow.
- 1:38:01And Jenkins ready now. The two strike delivery. Trying away. One and two.
- 1:38:05Rob Caru at the age of 21 and a rookie. Makes the American League all star team. It's quite a story.
- 1:38:13Quite a rise. It's fame for this young man who now makes his home in New York.
- 1:38:20Extremely pleasant young man I might end. Curb ball is low at two and two.
- 1:38:25Because he was reared in Panama he speaks Spanish of course but he's always gone to English speaking schools.
- 1:38:30So he's fluent in both Spanish and English.
- 1:38:36Caru wearing a golf glove on his left hand with so many of the players who even in this hot weather.
- 1:38:43And now Curb ball is hung on and missing. Caru is down on strikes.
- 1:38:47He puts strikeout records for Ferguson Jenkins. He puts strikeout number five in the book.
- 1:38:54Here is Tony Oliva. Tony is one for two. He is strikeout.
- 1:38:58And then Rolls one through the middle into center field for a base hit facing Jenkins in the fourth inning.
- 1:39:04Now the last half of the sixth.
- 1:39:11The bat ball fails high and away to this left handed hitter Ball one.
- 1:39:17The golf glove that so many hitters wear is about to say they wear them in the cold weather to keep the sting out of their bats.
- 1:39:22But they start off rather well at the plate. It becomes a superstition I think.
- 1:39:26That's right. Curb ball waved out here by Tony Oliva. Ball one and strike one.
- 1:39:32And some will tell you they get a better grip on the bat too.
- 1:39:38That's possibly what I needed in 20 years too late.
- 1:39:42The one one pitch. He threw this one by him.
- 1:39:45And a feeble swing by Tony Oliva. And evidently guessing wrong.
- 1:39:48And it's all one and strike two and Jenkins has had good stuff. He made one bad pitch.
- 1:39:52Ah Curb ball to Brooks Robinson. And Brooks they cleared the wall in left field.
- 1:39:58Now a one to one ball game. And this has been a honey.
- 1:40:03They won two pitch. Curb ball he gets a piece of this one and pounds it out of the glove to catch it.
- 1:40:08Tom Heller stays alive up there. No change in the count. It's all one and strike two.
- 1:40:18We were talking about the fairness of this ballpark buddy.
- 1:40:21And I was talking to some of these hitters from both leagues about the background.
- 1:40:25It's a very good background.
- 1:40:28It is that tremendous canvas in dead center field. Needed a tee three.
- 1:40:34I'll leave a pile to pitch away. This ball is way inside.
- 1:40:40Now players from all ball clubs that Tony and we've experienced this now in two years here in Anaheim.
- 1:40:45They love to play here. The temperature is just about right in the evenings at around 65 degrees. 70.
- 1:40:51And it is a fair ballpark. It's a gorgeous ballpark in its tropical setting. Complete with palm trees and all.
- 1:40:58Fastballs. One run and miss. And Jenkins.
- 1:41:02Right down to Tony O'Leary. They strike out number six for him. So Jenkins working three and he strikes out six.
- 1:41:08Here in the last half of the season.
- 1:41:10Well the American League one run on one yes. The home run by Brooks Robinson and no one left on base.
- 1:41:15And the score at the end of six now reads the American League one and the National League one.
- 1:41:24Well right now let's take a break and talk about another kind of excitement.
- 1:41:27It's something youthful and lively and it has a great shape. Now you say what is it? It's a 67 dot dart.
- 1:41:34Now this is a big contact for you. Big on luxury and comfort. With home padded seats and full type of things.
- 1:41:40The dart and why the lineup is big too. There are two door hard tops. Two and four door sedans.
- 1:41:46And of course the one way of getting out in the sun. The ever popular dodge dart convertible.
- 1:41:51And now speaking of excitement. Have you seen the new dart GP hard top?
- 1:41:55It comes with the things that you would expect a Ford car to have. Like bucket seats and center console.
- 1:42:01And a choice of spirited engine. Up to the optional four barrel 273 cubic inch V8.
- 1:42:07So pick yourself a dart. Any dart. It's the quickest way out of the dull driving rush.
- 1:42:13The dart looks like fun and it certainly is. The price? Well that's the only small thing about a dodge dart.
- 1:42:19So see you soon at your dodge dart. The good guys in the white hat.
- 1:42:28At the end of six it needs to play. The National League one, the American League one.
- 1:42:33We're set for action now in the top of the seventh. And again we call it for you here comes Jim Simpson.
- 1:42:38Thank you Bob Lappner. Dick McCallup. It's the new second baseman for the American League.
- 1:42:42His manager Hank Nahr makes still another change. Hank Aaron. His base Gary Peters.
- 1:42:46And now the first one off the chest of woods Robinson that lifts us up with it and throws him out.
- 1:42:53And Aaron hit the ball very well but Robinson got in trouble with the ball hurriedly.
- 1:42:57Knocked it down and was able to throw up the police foot at Henry Aaron. As Orlando's competitor comes up
- 1:43:03letters complete the pitching record of Arguson Jenkins.
- 1:43:06Now one run on Brook Robinson Holm-Lon free hits six strikeouts and six strikeouts ties him with some pretty exclusive companies.
- 1:43:15After Orlando takes his first pitch we'll see what happens. It's outside ball one from Peters.
- 1:43:20In 1934 Carl Hubble struck out 34 or rather six. In 1943 Johnny Vandemere struck out six.
- 1:43:27And in 1950 Larry Janssen struck out six. Now up to the right by Sopeta to add one more.
- 1:43:33Ferguson Jenkins the fourth man in all-star history to strike out six in his tenure on the mound.
- 1:43:39One to one to score one down to the seventh. Sopeta was grounded into a double play and grounded the first base to bat.
- 1:43:45Larry Peters in his second inning for the fastball catches the inside corner and it's one and two.
- 1:43:52As we remarked as we came on the air was one for twenty one and all-star play before today.
- 1:43:58He's now one for twenty three. And of course a much better hitter than that.
- 1:44:05Richie Allens Holm-Lon the only run for the National League.
- 1:44:07Brooks Robinson Holm-Lon the only run for the American League.
- 1:44:11In the seven Peters working round back by Sopeta. One to two.
- 1:44:18Talking about some of these power hitters from both leagues.
- 1:44:22Jim one thing I noticed in batting practice these hitters like Sopeta and the Phillies Richie Allens are using very heavy bats.
- 1:44:30Thirty eight forty ounces whereas in the American League a Mickey Mantle or a Harman Kilibro is using a thirty two ounce bat.
- 1:44:36So there's quite a bit of difference in weight as far as the bats these players are using.
- 1:44:41Peters ready for the one and two pitch.
- 1:44:44Kerrball and Sopeta is out in front of it and lined it hard, fouled into the left field seats.
- 1:44:55God remains at one and two as the American League looses at the last corner.
- 1:44:59O'Rourke trying to catch the National League. The National League has the overall edge in all-star games.
- 1:45:03Nineteen to seventy. Peters is ready. Fast-fouls head to the inside corner.
- 1:45:07Again and Gary as his third strikeout. Two down in the seventh.
- 1:45:11And Sopeta was caught looking and you'll see that happen with many right-handed hitters and good ones against Gary Peters.
- 1:45:17His fast-fall may start three or four inches inside and breaks very sharply over home play.
- 1:45:22So you'll see a lot of called third strikes with Peters on the mound.
- 1:45:25There is Richie Allens who let off the second inning hitting a ball and was rather low in a ray.
- 1:45:29Way and hitting it to the opposite field for the home run into the right center field stand.
- 1:45:34He struck out swinging in the fourth. Kerrball and he swings into strike one.
- 1:45:41Tony Kubeck had just said that Richie Allens has probably more power than any other man.
- 1:45:46When he comes to brute power and he, the next pitch, hit one to the opposite field.
- 1:45:50Strike again right down the middle from Gary Peters.
- 1:45:53He's already struck out three in one and two-thirds innings.
- 1:45:56Talking to Tommy Helms and Pete Rhodes of the Cincinnati ball club who are at the All-Star game
- 1:46:01and they were saying that he either hits the ball very hard or strikes out.
- 1:46:04He doesn't hit a ball badly.
- 1:46:06Inside with the fast-fall it is two-two.
- 1:46:20Fast-fall inside again.
- 1:46:22There have been no walks at all in this ball game.
- 1:46:26The American League has struck out six.
- 1:46:29Jenkins did that all by himself with an extra leg and Marichelle has three.
- 1:46:33Check the count. It is now two-two to Allens.
- 1:46:35Fast-fall on the way. Now it is three and two.
- 1:46:39Brooks Robinson is playing Allens pretty close to the third baseline
- 1:46:43and yet Tony Alleva, the center-fielder for the American League,
- 1:46:46all charges playing Allens' shade slightly toward right field.
- 1:46:50So he can hit with powered anti-fielder. That type of indication.
- 1:46:54Three-two pitches fouled back.
- 1:46:56One-round free hits, no errors for the National League.
- 1:46:58One-round four hits, no errors for the American.
- 1:47:00Chance followed by McLaughlin and now Peters.
- 1:47:02Marichelle started for the National League.
- 1:47:04Jenkins followed him and Cleyar probably will be the next pitcher for the National League.
- 1:47:10Mays has made an appearance and struck out.
- 1:47:13But he's in the game and Allens strikes out.
- 1:47:16That's the fourth for Gary Peters.
- 1:47:18Allens no hits, no errors.
- 1:47:20None left in the middle of the seventh.
- 1:47:22The score remains from National League one and the American League one.
- 1:47:26Hello, face?
- 1:47:31Yes.
- 1:47:33Are you really my face?
- 1:47:37Yes, what do you want?
- 1:47:39Well, you're going to think this is silly, but I've been told to ask you about this Gillette Tecmatic razor.
- 1:47:45Oh, it's beautiful.
- 1:47:47Beautiful? It looks kind of funny to me.
- 1:47:49It shaves beautiful, shaves beautiful.
- 1:47:51I like being treated gently. I do have feelings.
- 1:47:54You never meant to hurt your feelings.
- 1:47:56That Tecmatic thing feels very light. It puts less pressure on pressure.
- 1:48:00How I hate pressure.
- 1:48:02Yes, I'd notice that.
- 1:48:03Now, Nick, do you know what one Nick can do to my pride?
- 1:48:06With a Tecmatic, you're just not going to make me so much. That is a fact.
- 1:48:10Hey, you really do like this Gillette Tecmatic, don't you?
- 1:48:13Well, why didn't you speak up before?
- 1:48:15Well, I'm not a big fan of this.
- 1:48:17Oh, not heard.
- 1:48:19The Gillette Tecmatic razor. Ask your face about it.
- 1:48:23We move now to the bottom of the seventh inning of this 1-1 38th annual All-Star game.
- 1:48:32And it is not for you, but rather Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals,
- 1:48:35and Walter Alston of the Saps, to pitch this to seventh inning.
- 1:48:38Gibson is 10-6 on the year with 118 strikeouts, only 29 walks.
- 1:48:44With a 3.5 for year in run after.
- 1:48:46And Gus Sality, pitched to Philadelphia, 9-2-3 in the inning.
- 1:48:51So he is working with P-Day's work.
- 1:48:53Gibson, a big right-hander, and Tony, it's almost an understatement to say with a blazing fastball.
- 1:48:59That's about right. They talk about throwing aspirin tablets, and they call them flame throwers.
- 1:49:03Well, Gibson is just that. He's a hard thrower, doesn't try to finesse these hitters,
- 1:49:07tries to overpower them.
- 1:49:09Here's Harmon Killerbrew. He's rounded off the third, and has been called out on strikes.
- 1:49:13Harmon Killerbrew to be followed by Conigliaro, and here's Frampke,
- 1:49:18barring of course, and hitters in this all-star game.
- 1:49:25Long drive, center field, Willie Maze though, has it in range with that familiar top of the glove.
- 1:49:30You let everybody know he's got it, and takes it for the first down.
- 1:49:35That'll bring up Tony Conigliaro, who is glad to write, and has struck out.
- 1:49:39Tom Hall is behind the plate, so Payne remains at first, and Masarovsky is second alley at short, and Allen at third.
- 1:49:46Hank Aaron is shot in the center, has moved to left, replacing Luebock.
- 1:49:50Willie Maze is in center, and Roberto Clemente in right.
- 1:49:53Bob Gibson, the third pitcher to follow, Maricela and Jenkins.
- 1:50:01Gibson ready to face Conigliaro, right-handed batter, and he jams him, and he fouls it up-stair.
- 1:50:06Mike Watt, we talked before the ball game about the pre-game strategy of these two managers, Jim,
- 1:50:11and the foul is pre-game strategy, with not to use too many players, and he's already changed two,
- 1:50:16besides pitchers, his shortstop and second baseman, inside fast pitch from Gibson,
- 1:50:22backing Conigliaro out of the box, in a hurry.
- 1:50:25Manager Walt Alston of the National League has just changed his catcher, Hallow,
- 1:50:29who replaced Tori, who was injured, so they're both going against their strategy.
- 1:50:33Here's the one-on-one pitch, and Conigliaro fouls it from back to the screen, it is one and two.
- 1:50:41Now, last year, Tony at St. Louis, where it was 105 degrees officially, we went to extra innings
- 1:50:46before Woody, Mario Will, singled in Tim McCover to make it two to one.
- 1:50:50There's a foul at the plate by Conigliaro. That remains one and two, and here we are again,
- 1:50:54in much more pleasant weather, in another beautiful stadium, Anaheim, St. Louis is also beautiful,
- 1:50:59and another close all-star game, one-to-one, Gibson ready, and throwing, and strikes out,
- 1:51:04Conigliaro swinging, Gibson first strikeout, two down and the seventh.
- 1:51:09And now for the American League, and the bullpen of former Yankee teammate, and left-hander, Al Downey has begun the throw.
- 1:51:15And Stardew Sremski, who is struck out and doubled, comes to back.
- 1:51:22With one down and the fifth innings, Sremski doubles, Aaron Friedpore,
- 1:51:26who gets the ball bounced away from him, but was left there.
- 1:51:29Swings at the first-fifth strike one, freehand, popped out, and Mickey Mantle came into bat
- 1:51:34for pitcher Jim McLaughlin, who was called on a third strike.
- 1:51:39Then, Brooks Robinson made everything right in the sixth inning with a home run.
- 1:51:42Low, to use Sremski, and it is one-on-one.
- 1:51:47It's nice to watch, and easy to watch from up here, Jim, when you see some of these great players,
- 1:51:51like Mickey Mantle, I mean, Mickey Mantle rather batting, but Willie Mays defensively,
- 1:51:55and you see, even when the ball isn't hitting his direction, he seems to be breaking.
- 1:51:58They talk about the instinct of a ball player, and Mays has it, of course, everybody knows,
- 1:52:02but he breaks in many directions.
- 1:52:06Well from Gibson, and then right back with a fast ball, and Sremski goes around on a first strike.
- 1:52:10The count now is two and two.
- 1:52:12The shadows of the gun to Lincoln here, Danaheim from left field,
- 1:52:15stretching across the right field.
- 1:52:17The temperature's about four degrees from ninety to a game time to eighty-eight.
- 1:52:21All in all, a pleasant afternoon, two-two pitch with two outs, this is low and very close.
- 1:52:26Three and two, there's not going to walk in the ball again, it is nationally one,
- 1:52:29American League one, two outs, in the bottom of the semifinal.
- 1:52:33Gibson working very quickly, comes right back with a fast ball,
- 1:52:37in and the right center field, Mays coming on fast, and walks into the ball from front of him.
- 1:52:41And Sremski has his second hit.
- 1:52:43A fifth hit for the American League.
- 1:52:46Yes, didn't hit that ball particularly well, here on the fifth, I think, is that little Texas Liga just in front of Willie Mays.
- 1:52:53Sremski now two for three, and here's Bill Frehan,
- 1:52:57who was called out on strikes in the third, and popped to the shortstop in the fifth.
- 1:53:06Frehan, as we said many times, has a lot of power, and already 12 home runs and 40 RBI.
- 1:53:12Now, Sremski in his first start in all-star play has gone two for three.
- 1:53:17Gibson ready, throwing at the right hand of Frehan, fast ball inside corner, strike one.
- 1:53:24Armbeck is Gary Peters, who I doubt would be valid for Tony, because he's a fine hitter.
- 1:53:31Fast ball is inside, Frehan goes for D, to avoid it.
- 1:53:35Since there have been so many strikeouts, including 10 for the National League,
- 1:53:41we'll tell you that the strikeout record for two teams in a non-ending all-star game is 18.
- 1:53:48There have been seven fouled back by Frehan, by the American League thus far,
- 1:53:53so we've got 17, and have a way little bit chance that time is adding a new record for Sremski.
- 1:54:00One and two to Frehan with his Sremski at first.
- 1:54:03Bob Gibson, the third nationally pitcher. There goes the runner, and it is strike three.
- 1:54:08As Frehan swings to the low pitch and strikes out.
- 1:54:10And that ties the record for strikeouts in the all-star game for two teams.
- 1:54:15That's the 18, and that is the 11 for the National League and the second for Bob Gibson.
- 1:54:21No runs, one hits, no errors, one left.
- 1:54:24At the end of seven, National League won, American League won.
- 1:54:27I've done it again, done one again.
- 1:54:33Come out without cigarettes.
- 1:54:35Full here, try one of mine.
- 1:54:37Oh, that's okay. I'm here. Try one of mine. Have a Salem.
- 1:54:44Salem is the man of Salem, at least I'm sure he's for you.
- 1:54:50Salem is the man of Salem, all while from America.
- 1:54:56And you, the man of Salem, don't take anything but the best.
- 1:55:04Salem is the man of Salem, one friend that I'll sell all the best.
- 1:55:13Try one of mine.
- 1:55:15Thanks to Salem, thanks to Salem, all the best.
- 1:55:20And now for Manahar, we've lost 30 seconds worth station identification.
- 1:55:31Businessmen, do you think temporary office help is expensive?
- 1:55:34If you do, you don't know about Olston temporary services.
- 1:55:37To use them, you pay only one low rate that covers everything.
- 1:55:40Pay roll, taxes, insurance, bonding, testing.
- 1:55:43Olston temporary services do not cost you money, they save you money.
- 1:55:47Look into it. Look up Olston, that's O-L-S-T-E-N in the white pages of your phone book.
- 1:55:53All regularly scheduled programs canceled to bring you the All-Star Game on WNBC, M&FM, New York.
- 1:56:03The 38th All-Star Game now moves into the eighth inning.
- 1:56:05Manahar, this is Jim Simpson, and I'm sure that Buddy Blasner and Johnny Cookeback,
- 1:56:09both of whom have played a lot of Major League Baseball,
- 1:56:12and seen a lot of it, will agree with me that this is one of the finally pitched All-Games,
- 1:56:16the All-Star history.
- 1:56:18Tom Haller will get his first swings, having replaced Joe Torrey in the bottom of the fifth inning
- 1:56:23after Torrey's rounded out in two attempts.
- 1:56:25Bill Mazurowski and Gene Halley are the schedule pitchers, or rather, batters after Haller.
- 1:56:31Gary Peters has struck out four and allowed no hits in his two innings on the mound.
- 1:56:37One-to-one the score, home run by Richie Holland-Cillies from the National League
- 1:56:45and by Bruce Robinson of Baltimore, for the American League.
- 1:56:49That's it, that's the scoring.
- 1:56:51The left-handed hitting Haller steps in.
- 1:56:53Tom was 30 years old last month, now lives in California.
- 1:56:57Fine quarterback for Illinois, 10th year, 6th year, is the starting Giants catcher.
- 1:57:02He's on the All-Star squad last year, but did not play in Rich's one foul by first base into the stands.
- 1:57:08Strike one.
- 1:57:10Now this is Haller's first real attempt in All-Star play.
- 1:57:17Well, it is one-on-one now, Halley.
- 1:57:19And this year, Jim, it was exceptionally tough in the balloting for the All-Star positions
- 1:57:24of catch and outfield positions for the National League.
- 1:57:27There have been so many great ones, some good ones have been left off this team.
- 1:57:30Little pop fly that Fragosi at shortstop backs up and now backs up some more
- 1:57:34and takes it for the first stop of the eighth inning.
- 1:57:40That will bring up Bill Mazurowski as his ground of the short on two occasions.
- 1:57:49One-to-one the score.
- 1:57:51Remember, NBC is bringing you this All-Star game today here in the United States
- 1:57:55and of course, around the world and armed forces radio, we'd like to remind you of NBC television's coverage of Major League Baseball in a moment.
- 1:58:02Outside of Mazurowski, NBC of course is on every weekend on Saturdays with Major League Baseball, the primary game this week.
- 1:58:09The Chicago Cubs have surprised everybody by tying for the lead.
- 1:58:12Now, I've lost 7-3 half Los Angeles defending champions.
- 1:58:15Inside with the curveball to Mazurowski, it's 2-0.
- 1:58:18And for those in Chicago and in Los Angeles, Tony and I will be in San Francisco for the game between Houston and the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:58:26Speaking of Houston, we are, their pitcher is up and warming again on the National League bullpen.
- 1:58:312-0 pitch from Gary Peters to Mazurowski way outside of this 3-0 and we're not on a walk in this game yet.
- 1:58:37Jim talking a little about Mazurowski was that he led the National League 7 consecutive roles for years in a row in double plays.
- 1:58:46So he's got a record for himself in that.
- 1:58:48Strike as Mazurowski was taking all the way from Gary Peters.
- 1:58:54He's never been known for hitting much for an average.
- 1:58:57This year he is of course adding a 2-93 but he's always been a very consistent coach hitter.
- 1:59:03Now back and Peters who has won 10 and lost 4 this year down 3-0 has now quickly run it up to 3-2.
- 1:59:10Well we've had 18 strikeouts and no walks and I'm sure they will dig out a record sooner or later if this no walks keeps up to see if that's ever been done before.
- 1:59:19The pitchers have been getting the ball around the plate fouled again off to the right and up stairs out of play.
- 1:59:253-2, one down on the 8th, National League 1, American League 1.
- 1:59:30Each team has a left hander in their bullpen right now. Al Downey the left hander continues to warm up as Cuellar does for the National League.
- 1:59:38Peters working his last inning and back with a 3-2 and there's a shot in the left field but right there just steps the in-text is on the line for the second half.
- 1:59:50And that will bring up Gene Alley. The shortstop of the fifth bird clock, he's flat to right and has been called out on the plate.
- 1:59:59Alley the top post getter in either league.
- 2:00:03And this is his first all-star game in quarter through.
- 2:00:06Peters ready, big curve ball, drop so far strike one.
- 2:00:12Peters fighting out against the Chicago rather against the Minnesota twins for the Chicago White Sox,
- 2:00:17we've got only effective at throwing harder than we have seen in front sometimes.
- 2:00:20There's a fast ball lined right back to Peters who as a golfers glove underhands the killer with first and third out.
- 2:00:26No runs, no hits, no errors and none left.
- 2:00:29And Gary Peters has worked three innings and not a man has reached the base.
- 2:00:32In the middle of the eighth, a national league won and an American league won.
- 2:00:36People are driving and have a better tire than tires.
- 2:00:38I know that a formal Ostrow of Chicago does a lot of driving around 40,000 miles a year.
- 2:00:43We asked him how he goes about buying tires.
- 2:00:46I buy a tire at my price really. I don't know anything about tires.
- 2:00:50I figure if I spend the money on the tires, spend a lot of money on the tire, I get a better tire.
- 2:00:54We told Mr. Ostrow there's a different way to buy tires at BF Goodrich with a gadget called the tire calculator.
- 2:01:00You tell it about your driving, how much you do, how fast you go and so on.
- 2:01:05Then it tells you which BF Goodrich tire suits you best.
- 2:01:08It'll be the one that costs you least in the long run too.
- 2:01:11We asked Mr. Ostrow how he'd feel about a dealer that used the tire calculator.
- 2:01:16You have to be honest.
- 2:01:18Couldn't be anything else.
- 2:01:19You'll like the way they do business at BF Goodrich. The straight talk tire people.
- 2:01:24When you're ready for some straight talk about tires, just drop into any BF Goodrich store or dealer.
- 2:01:30Look in the elephantage. The name are wireless, nearest you.
- 2:01:33We'll guarantee there's all three. With the three things that fit you,
- 2:01:36you're subscribed by All Star Rules and Don Mincher, the California Angels first baseman who's come in
- 2:01:43to pin for him and dropped the first one in his first left field right in front of Hacker and started with a single.
- 2:01:55And now Jim, we're going to get a pinch runner for Don Mincher.
- 2:01:58Tommy Agee of the White Sox is coming in to run.
- 2:02:02And Buddy Blatter, our partner up here in the booth, has a formula.
- 2:02:05Mincher's got quite a hot bat in the last five games. He's driven in ten runs.
- 2:02:09So he's kept that bat hot by getting on base for the American League.
- 2:02:12And remember that last year's rookie of the year, Tommy Agee, struck 44 bases last year.
- 2:02:17And he has stolen 22 already this year. And so he can run.
- 2:02:23The speed of the Goal White Sox, now in first base in Tommy Agee, and Jim Pertee, who has singled and struck out, is up.
- 2:02:30Is he up to Bunt? He tries to Bunt, which rolls foul, picked up quickly by Haller as Agee slides into second base,
- 2:02:36but he'll have to come back. It's a 1-1 ball game and Hacked Power in the American League,
- 2:02:41looking for the 1-run, Tony, as it's the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:02:44If they can score here, all they have to do is worry about the top of the ninth.
- 2:02:51Now Downing continues to warm for the American League.
- 2:02:53We are, and now another man, another left-hander, is up down in the nationally pole pin,
- 2:02:58as quickly Tom Haller runs out to Bob Gibson.
- 2:03:01We'll report again that Gibson, although he can get out of this trouble,
- 2:03:05and of course he may not did work 9-2-3 in his Saturday at Philadelphia.
- 2:03:10He's working with just 2 days of rest after an extended period on the mound.
- 2:03:15Go see the matter. He attempted the Bunt the first time.
- 2:03:18He swears around the Bunt, lets this one go inside with the fastball from Gibson.
- 2:03:22It is 1-1. Agee is standing on first base.
- 2:03:24Sepeda had broken in from first, and Allen from third.
- 2:03:27National League won, American League won on home runs by Richie Allen and Brooks Robinson.
- 2:03:32Last of the eighth inning. Nobody is out. Agee, as for Go see Bunt,
- 2:03:36it's a beauty picked up by Gibson, he goes to first.
- 2:03:40Asarovsky covering in the sacrifices, complete. Agee is the second base,
- 2:03:43with Brooks Robinson the home run hitter do up.
- 2:03:46And a pretty good Bunt by Jim Fragosi.
- 2:03:48Bob Gibson, one of the finest ceiling pitchers in the Major League,
- 2:03:52got off the mound very hurriedly, but a perfect Bunt by Jim Fragosi.
- 2:03:56Targas and Jenkins was the pitcher on the mound,
- 2:03:58without hanging high curveball, came to Robinson.
- 2:04:01And he dropped it over the left field spin.
- 2:04:03Gibson is the pitcher now. With Agee as second base,
- 2:04:07running for Don Minters, who hit Gibson's first pitch for a single,
- 2:04:10he's been sacrificed along by another angel, Jim Fragosi.
- 2:04:14And Hanna Hines is loving it.
- 2:04:16Fastball by Gibson hit the inside corner strike one.
- 2:04:19We've now got three left handers warming up, Jim.
- 2:04:22Hell downing continues to throw for the American League, Mike Cuellar,
- 2:04:25for the national along with Chris Short.
- 2:04:28Out of the way by Brooks Robinson. It's two strikes.
- 2:04:31A year ago, Tony, it was MacCawber of St. Louis in St. Louis,
- 2:04:34who went up to 10th inning with a single,
- 2:04:36and came around to score the winning runs, 2-1.
- 2:04:38Here at Hanna Hines, a couple of California angels
- 2:04:41that flipped the American League in pretty fair position.
- 2:04:43High pop up.
- 2:04:45As the Rasky goes out, but coming in fast as Plametti
- 2:04:47in short light center, waits for it and takes it with a basket catch.
- 2:04:50There are two down, with Dick McCullough due up for the first time.
- 2:04:54McCullough took over in the National League 7th inning
- 2:04:57after Rod Drew the starter had flagged deep to the left.
- 2:05:00Lived the center and struck out swinging.
- 2:05:02Dick is up for the first time in this game.
- 2:05:04Of course, I'm sure that most know that McCullough
- 2:05:07for the last two years was the starting shortstop.
- 2:05:10On the All-Star squad, the manager, Mayo Smith,
- 2:05:12knew at Detroit, switch stick, the second base this year.
- 2:05:15Ray Orton started it short,
- 2:05:17and as we look, McCullough was back at shortstop.
- 2:05:20McCullough with that high stance of his, holding his arms as he does,
- 2:05:25takes the fastball outside, all one.
- 2:05:28And Tony, I'm trying to think of words to describe the way
- 2:05:30that McCullough holds that bat.
- 2:05:32He's keeping down his right elbow, gives him throws again,
- 2:05:34he swings it, misses the strike line.
- 2:05:36Jim, it looks as though if the pitcher were to throw in right at McCullough,
- 2:05:39he'd hit him right square on the chest.
- 2:05:41But as the pitcher starts into his delivery, he pops that bat back,
- 2:05:44and he's going to throw it back in the middle of the bat.
- 2:05:47But as the pitcher starts into his delivery, he pops that bat back
- 2:05:50into a normal hitting position.
- 2:05:52HG's on second with two down in the bottom of the eighth inning,
- 2:05:55McCullough's a batter in a one-to-one ball game.
- 2:05:58American League has six hits, National League three, gives him throws,
- 2:06:01hits the right field, Clemente drips over to the right,
- 2:06:04taps his glove and takes the basket catch for the third half.
- 2:06:07No runs, a man left at second on one hit, no errors, and the score.
- 2:06:13At the end of eighth, the National League one and the American League one.
- 2:06:21This is Edie Gourmet.
- 2:06:22Someone asked me a very silly question the other day.
- 2:06:25He said, Edie, you know a lot about Clemente.
- 2:06:27Could you explain Baracuda's torsion bar suspension?
- 2:06:30Why, sure I say torsion bar is bar, that is, for them.
- 2:06:35You know, all those little torsions from, well, they help take the lumps out of the road.
- 2:06:40Let's sum it up this way, Edie, with torsion bar suspension,
- 2:06:43a Baracuda doesn't corner, it's carved, and that's what makes Baracuda a sports car,
- 2:06:48especially with optional power up to a 383 cubic inch V8.
- 2:06:52Drive a wild new Baracuda soon.
- 2:06:54Clemente is out the window over this year.
- 2:07:00Follow your Sears, Clemente, or today.
- 2:07:09Your Clemente is out to win you over with a wild new Baracuda.
- 2:07:13Fastback, hard, African vertical.
- 2:07:15In all of America's great sports cars, see Baracuda soon.
- 2:07:18Now coming into pitch, and remember, the only American League pitcher with previous All-Star experience with Dean Chance.
- 2:07:24Another man new to All-Star action is Al Downey, a little up-to-ender from the New York Yankees,
- 2:07:29who this year, has a 9-5 record of 2.67 earned run average,
- 2:07:35has only given up 3 home runs, and Tony Friday downing pitch to a shutout over Baltimore.
- 2:07:40And you played with Al, I know. What kind of pitcher is he?
- 2:07:43Al Downey has had difficulty in his past controlling his pitches.
- 2:07:47He's had good stuff all of his career, and very erratic with his fastball curveball and hard slider.
- 2:07:53Now we see Jim, that coming out of the dugout, the pinch hit, is Jim Wynn of the Houston Astros.
- 2:07:59So he'll be hitting for the pitcher.
- 2:08:03This season, Downey has not had much control of trouble, and of course this is pretty much an evidence,
- 2:08:08evidence with a great record that he had at this time.
- 2:08:11Downey has records for strikeouts to 106 for walks 38.
- 2:08:15Jim Wynn, who is coming out to bat for Bob Gibson.
- 2:08:2025 years old, born and lives in Cincinnati, was hurt last year,
- 2:08:23and put it up, he crashed into the wall, August 1st was lost to the Astros for the rest of the year.
- 2:08:28There's not plenty more, but he leaves the major leagues of RBI's this year with 65,
- 2:08:32and he has 21 home runs, and is quite a hitter.
- 2:08:38Bob Gibson worked two innings, allowed no runs, only two hits and struck out two,
- 2:08:42and again we have the statistic that nobody has walked anybody.
- 2:08:48Now in the American League's bullpen, Jim Lomburg of the Boston Red Sox has begun to throw,
- 2:08:54and Al Downey is nothing but right-handed hitters to face.
- 2:08:57We are in the ninth inning of this one-to-one ball game,
- 2:09:00and Al Downey comes down now to where anything can happen,
- 2:09:05and has to do with dramatic suddenness, as the home runs of Ricky Allen and Bruce Robinson have done.
- 2:09:10There has been no real rally, no real threat,
- 2:09:13only AG got as far as second base with just one out,
- 2:09:16and the eighth inning for the American League did not score.
- 2:09:19Stremsky also doubled and did not score.
- 2:09:23Al Downey ready to face the right-hander, Jim Wynn,
- 2:09:26and now off the ninth inning, one-to-one, and there is a curve ball that left slow.
- 2:09:30Ball one, one run, six hits, no errors for the American League,
- 2:09:33one run, three hits, no errors for the National League,
- 2:09:35seven strikeouts for the Americans,
- 2:09:37eleven for the National, including a record tying,
- 2:09:40six for Ferguson Jenkins, line drive to right field,
- 2:09:43and Knickley-Arrow plays it on the hop, and Jim Wynn has to face him, Al Downey.
- 2:09:52And now coming up is Woody May.
- 2:09:54Al Downey strikes in the sixth inning.
- 2:09:56But that in line California is an American League City.
- 2:09:59Of course, there are a lot of National Lakers down here from nearby Los Angeles and Dodgerwood.
- 2:10:04But there is almost a gasp of fear rather than applause and admiration
- 2:10:09for the single-right field by Jim Wynn,
- 2:10:11and the realization that Woody May's ever dangerous is due up.
- 2:10:16Wynn is also quick at first base.
- 2:10:20Robinson is playing in back of the bag at third.
- 2:10:23May squares around the bunt, takes low ball one.
- 2:10:30A tough decision, Jim, for manager Waldoch,
- 2:10:32and he wants to win this ball game,
- 2:10:34and he knows these people want to see Woody May's hit one out,
- 2:10:37and yet he's having him bunt, so you can see that he's trying to win this ball game very hard.
- 2:10:41National League has won the last four in a row.
- 2:10:43Downey looks at first and comes home with a fastball.
- 2:10:45If misses outside, it is two and all to Woody May's.
- 2:10:48And Wynn is referred to by Clemente Hank Aaron and Orlando Sepeta and Richie Allen on deck.
- 2:10:54Clemente is the right-handed hitter. Aaron is the right-handed hitter.
- 2:10:57Sepeta and Downey is a left-handed pitcher, and Willie Mays is right-handed.
- 2:11:04Two and all, none out. Wynn at first, ninth inning.
- 2:11:07Downey comes back with a change-up, that's left over, and it's two and one.
- 2:11:12And Willie started a bunt at the pitch, Jim,
- 2:11:14but Downey had great motion on the change-up,
- 2:11:16and this is something very unusual in a bunt situation with Willie attempting a bunt first strike.
- 2:11:20The change-up is not really an ideal pitch to throw, and I believe it's called Willie.
- 2:11:24Onward continues to warm up in the American League both in to find young pitcher from the Boston Reds.
- 2:11:32Downey is ready and throws a fastball. This one is low, how thought he had it?
- 2:11:36It is three and one.
- 2:11:38Bob Robinson and Killabrew were breaking in from third and first.
- 2:11:42Jim No walks, remember, by any pitcher on either team.
- 2:11:48And it is now three and one to Willie Mays.
- 2:11:50Let's see whether or not Walter Austin has Mays on the three and one after having him attempt a bunt.
- 2:11:55Swinging away.
- 2:11:58Swinging away, high drive, center field, back goes Tony Alivo, over to his right,
- 2:12:03drifting back forward, tagging his first and heading for second as Wynn,
- 2:12:07and Wynn goes in after the catch.
- 2:12:11And Tony Alivo, the centerfielder, has a very good arm and hurried his throw back in,
- 2:12:14and a pretty good throw at that, but Jim Wynn with his amazing speed,
- 2:12:17tagged up and made a very good base running maneuver to get into second base.
- 2:12:21And that brings up right-handed Roberto Clementi,
- 2:12:25who beat out an infield hit in the first inning, struck out swinging in the third and was called out in the sixth.
- 2:12:31But now the National League has a going head run on second base with one down.
- 2:12:37Exactly the same situation the American League had against Bob Gibson in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:12:41They did not score.
- 2:12:49And then he steps in, the shadows here at Anaheim have now reached almost completely across center field.
- 2:12:55Ford ride, only Conigliaro in right has faded in sunshine,
- 2:12:58and the deficit drops from a game time, 92 to 87.
- 2:13:03It's been great space for a winner for the spectators, a little warm perhaps for the players,
- 2:13:07but what a 38-yard-old car game.
- 2:13:09One-to-one, National League American League ninth inning.
- 2:13:14Bounding throw to Clementi, who lags with it upstairs, foul to the right.
- 2:13:18When you talk about somebody having his work cut out for him,
- 2:13:21it's Sal Gowney, a left-hander to face these full right-handers for the National League.
- 2:13:27National League is one of last four to roll, holds the 19-17 heads over the American League, there's been one top.
- 2:13:34National League is one 16 of the last 21, and right now are threatening in the side roll game here in the ninth.
- 2:13:42Gowney working his most rival player of last year, fails to hit the corner.
- 2:13:47Upside, one more.
- 2:13:55Gim Landra continues to throw, so should Clementi get on by a walk or hit,
- 2:14:02manager Hancock may be forced into making a change for the right-hander.
- 2:14:07Downing left on the one-one pitch.
- 2:14:10Down again upstairs, off the fifth, just one and two.
- 2:14:13Clementi.
- 2:14:16Downing last Friday worked with Baltimore, and shuts him out, as he said.
- 2:14:20Baltimore not having the use of Frank Robinson, nor do the All-Stars today.
- 2:14:25Frank took himself out of the game Friday night, and can bury the White Sox replacement.
- 2:14:29Al Kailan, of course, injured his hand several weeks ago, and has been lost to the Tigers and also to the All-Stars.
- 2:14:35But that is forgotten now by the fans here as they're watching a one-one ball game.
- 2:14:40Lankan, one and two to Clementi, downing right.
- 2:14:46And the most breaking pitch comes out.
- 2:14:53Pretty good change up curveball, Jim, that Clementi was fooled on somewhat,
- 2:14:58was a little bit out in front of it, had a good touch, and a little bit out in front of it.
- 2:15:02And the record writers will enter another little rotation in the next year's book.
- 2:15:06The All-Stars are lining performance, if this goes on, in here.
- 2:15:10And no more.
- 2:15:12Nineteen shots, a clip seeing the previous record of 18 in the ball game in 1959, and again in 1964.
- 2:15:19Hank Aaron, curveball stays high, and Aaron is ball one, downing, trying to pitch his way out of trouble.
- 2:15:28Against the likes of Woody Maze, Roberto Clementi, and now Hank Aaron.
- 2:15:33He talked about the unorthodox sitting over a fair show of Clementi,
- 2:15:36while Henry Aaron is another unorthodox right-handed hitter and a great hitter.
- 2:15:40He accepts that turn, which is not advised by many hittingers,
- 2:15:43but he's a good hitter.
- 2:15:46And this is the first time in a long time, that he's been hit by a ball,
- 2:15:50and he's been hit by a ball, and he's been hit by a ball, and it's a good hit.
- 2:15:55And the record writers will enter another little rotation in the next year's book.
- 2:16:00And the record writers will enter another little rotation in the next year's book.
- 2:16:05He's been hit by a ball, and in the next two years, he's been hit by a ball,
- 2:16:10and he's been hit by a ball, and he's been hit by a ball.
- 2:16:13And it's the first time in a long time, that he's been hit by a ball.
- 2:16:17When it comes to the unorthodox right-handed hitter and a great hitter,
- 2:16:20he accepts that turn, which is not advised by many hittingers, but he keeps that back back at all times.
- 2:16:26Donning is ready, curveball to Bruce Robinson and one hop.
- 2:16:29The shot prefers to Killebrew, and Donning is out of trouble.
- 2:16:33But a hairdroom that many use the most turned out to be water.
- 2:16:37And water had already been invented.
- 2:16:39So all of Gillette's develop heads up.
- 2:16:41A hairdroom that mixes with water.
- 2:16:43Gillette heads up.
- 2:16:45You get the clean looking feel of water with the staying power of a hairdroom.
- 2:16:49And you can get heads up in a bottle or two.
- 2:16:51Believe it that Gillette has something for everybody.
- 2:16:55I don't know.
- 2:16:57Jim Simpson with Tony Kubeck and Buddy Blatner as we move now to the round of the ninth inning.
- 2:17:03Tony Oliva, Armand Killebrew and Tony Kanikiearo the batter.
- 2:17:07And we have a new pitcher from the Philadelphia Phillies, Chris Short.
- 2:17:11As come in the pitch, Short worked on Saturdays against the Cardinals.
- 2:17:17Eight innings, five and two on the air and has been injured.
- 2:17:2172 strikeouts, 40 walks and the new pitcher to Short has been pushed onto a play.
- 2:17:29A master out and Chris Short here.
- 2:17:33Well as how Downing had to work to some power, so does Chris Short.
- 2:17:37Although Oliva is the left-handed batter.
- 2:17:39But Killebrew follows and then Kanikiearo.
- 2:17:43And in the bottom of the ninth inning, Tony Kubeck, you know, I know, those listening around the world know.
- 2:17:48It only takes one swing of the batter to end this game for the American League.
- 2:17:52And Tony Oliva, as we mentioned earlier, has been a hot hitter for the Minnesota Twins in the past several weeks.
- 2:17:58He had a rather slow start, but when Oliva is hitting, he doesn't care if it's left-handed, right-handed or both-handed.
- 2:18:04He can hit them.
- 2:18:06He's got a good eye when he's hitting the ball well and can hit with power at any field.
- 2:18:09Eight home runs this year, getting a 4-24 over the last eight games in the regular play.
- 2:18:14Short delivers a little ground-water alley at Shortstop.
- 2:18:18Shortthrow the first and has to leave up for the first out on the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:18:24And now Harman Killebrew, who is grounded the third, called out on strikes and fly to center.
- 2:18:30One to one to stall in the second inning.
- 2:18:33Ritchie Allen of the Phillies, forward in the sixth inning.
- 2:18:36Brooks Robinson of the Orioles, forward and that has been hit.
- 2:18:3946,000 here at Anaheim Stadium this afternoon as the all-star classic has moved to Southern California.
- 2:18:53No matter who wins and who loses this game, the argument will continue to raise,
- 2:18:57which is the Starter League, the National League or the American League.
- 2:19:01Short throws and Killebrew, did not mean to hit it, pops it up on a check swing to Nazarowski's second base,
- 2:19:07and takes it for the second out.
- 2:19:15And Short to Nigli Arrow, go down before Short and we go into extra innings.
- 2:19:20To be advised, there have been four extra innings in all-star history.
- 2:19:24All have been won by the National League.
- 2:19:26But then remember, the National League has won four in a row and nobody has ever won five in a row.
- 2:19:31Nigli Arrow in the batter, takes high, on a slow curve from Chris Short, ball one.
- 2:19:37Only fly to right of the second, struck out swinging in the fifth and again in the seventh.
- 2:19:47Swings on a curve ball, it is one and one.
- 2:19:49Ritchie Allen in the third base and for the National League is now playing just one step away from that third base line.
- 2:19:56Orlando Cepeda is playing closer to the line, they want to cut down the possibility of an extra base hit down that line.
- 2:20:01One-one pitch, right field, Clometty is over, Maze is over, it's Clometty who is calling for it, putting down the glasses and taking it for the third out.
- 2:20:10And so we go to extra innings.
- 2:20:12No arms, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 2:20:14At the end of nine, the National League won, the American League won.
- 2:20:18Now we go to extra innings, the top of the 10th inning we'll find Orlando Cepeda, Ritchie Allen and Tom Haller against the left hander, Al Downey.
- 2:20:28And of course, both Cepeda and Allen, that right handed, and both of course have great talent.
- 2:20:36Cepeda today, as ground at the first, unassisted hit into a double plate, has been called out on strikes.
- 2:20:42And so in Orlando's all-star career, he has won for 24, that's a blue single, and everybody knows, someday, the big goal Orlando Cepeda, whose father was the greatest flair in Puerto Rican baseball history, has got to break out of it.
- 2:21:0129 years old, line just on the right center field over his critically high hole.
- 2:21:05Back handed, Cepeda hits the warning clock.
- 2:21:08Great catch by Tony Collegalier, he ran a very long way into the ball of the right center field, and very hard down the line by Cepeda, and he called in full stride in front of the 375 stride, right in front of the warning track.
- 2:21:24And that will bring up Ritchie Allen.
- 2:21:27Now on the first time at FAT, in the ball of the deep right center field, and went into the seats, where the last of the leagues only run. One to one, in the tenth.
- 2:21:42Downing is ready, and throws a fastball, it is low, ball one to Allen.
- 2:21:48Now on deck, it looks as though Ernie Banks will do the batting for Tom Halle.
- 2:21:52Downing is ready again, throws a fastball, and Allen fouls off, it is one to one.
- 2:22:00Banks having one of his greatest years, and he had a number of great ones last year, Ernie had only 15 home runs.
- 2:22:07This year, he has already hit 15, and aged 36, he's the oldest player in this all-star game.
- 2:22:14Downing throws another fastball on the outside corner, strikes two to Allen, who since that home run has struck out twice, 12 times swinging.
- 2:22:25Downing-Cubeck remarks that, nationally players say Ritchie either hits the ball for it, or it strikes out.
- 2:22:34Fastball inside and low, backing it up, it's two-two.
- 2:22:37We were about to say that this is one of the first times that neither ball club has anybody warming up in the bullpen, but now Jim Catfish Hunter of the Kansas City Athletics has gotten up, and he's warming up to the American League.
- 2:22:49Riking pitch that stays inside, it is three and two, and again, low point out, there have been no walks.
- 2:22:54Speaking of Catfish Hunter, I loved the way he got his name. I wondered about it. He ran away from home one time, went out fishing, caught a couple of Catfish, and came neatly back, and his fans started Catfish ever after.
- 2:23:05Downing throws a fastball and strikes him out.
- 2:23:13Second strikeout for Downing, that's nine for the American League as Ernie Banks comes up to replace Haller.
- 2:23:21That's the 20th strikeout on this all-star game as opposed to no walks.
- 2:23:25An hour of Ernie Banks, 15 years with a cop net replayed in the line, there's only Al Ceylon and Billy O'Dell among the active players can say that.
- 2:23:33Ernie Banks, in the major leagues, has got the record for the most home runs by a shortstop, 47-19-58.
- 2:23:40He's had six seasons where he would never miss the game. He, like Roger Maris and Mickey Matles, the only active player to be a most reliable player two years in a row, in 1958 and 59.
- 2:23:50This is his 12th all-star game. He's nine for 31, 2-90 with a home run, a triple and a double.
- 2:23:57Downing works and Banks files it off. Strike one. Two down, 10th inning, one to one to score.
- 2:24:04We're talking about the heavy bats that some of these nationally players use now, Sepeta, Richie Allen.
- 2:24:10Ernie Banks was a player that used one of the lightest bats of any of the major leagues, but this year he's changed to a heavy bat and he's had been very successful.
- 2:24:18Blind drive, right center field, this list is over, drop in, it does, in front of Kenicki Allen and Banks, the veteran, the oldest man on either side, comes through with a base hit with two down and a 10th.
- 2:24:29And that brings up Bill Mazurowski, who has hit this on the day.
- 2:24:35Banks hit with not hit real solidly. It was a semi-line drive that he hit off the end of the bat. It not hit very hard, but he threw it out there in the right spot.
- 2:24:44That's the fifth hit. More than nationally, two off-deans chance including all-in-one, one off the drop, and none off-feeters who retired, nine in a row, and now two off-out downing.
- 2:24:54That's a rough case, rounded out twice and lined to left.
- 2:25:00Swing and a miss on a curve ball, hit strike one.
- 2:25:05This game although in extra innings is only about two hours and 15 minutes old.
- 2:25:15Moving right along, downing ready, fast ball which is fouled back to the screen, it is two strikes from Mazurowski.
- 2:25:25And if downing gets through this Tony, if nothing else, he's going to get a pat on the back from other left-handers who have had their face and maybe they haven't been too many.
- 2:25:33It likes it mays, Flemeny, Aaron, Sopeta, and Allum all in a row and then Ernie Banks.
- 2:25:42Fast ball is fouled upstairs to the right. Still two strikes to Mazurowski.
- 2:25:49Manager Wal Olson is looking a little ahead right now. Should Mazurowski and Gene Alley get on base, that will bring up Chris Short for pitcher.
- 2:25:57And he's got Tom Siever, a right-hander from the Mets warming up in the bullpen at this time.
- 2:26:03Two down with Banks at first. Bits remains very high. Freehand had to step up to get it. Gets one and two.
- 2:26:12Alley is the on-back batter. On runs, and we'll repeat it again. Richie Allen and Bruce Robinson that has been the only strong miss to 38-ohl star game.
- 2:26:20And finished. Here's the ball, hit to left field. Kostropski is over now and has it for the third out.
- 2:26:28All arms one hit, no errors, then one left. At the end of nine and a half, the National League won, the American League won.
- 2:26:35The nine home team recover as the new catcher from the Cardinals and 20-poise. If this man is a face Richie Allen at third. Chris Short the pitcher, raising the ball outside. The card was done. All one. Freehand, the pitcher is on back.
- 2:26:50Now, let me the batter on back and this one on back.
- 2:26:53Now, it's coming through. Chris Short and it is two out.
- 2:27:06And on those changes for the National League, the Cardinals are back in the number six spot, and as you're back in the number five position.
- 2:27:12The Stemsky steps back in, facing the left hand of Chris Shaw, and on each occasion,
- 2:27:22the counter has been 3-0, and on each occasion, going through this once, Al Downey once, they've got out of the situation.
- 2:27:42And now he could see Bill Stemsky as Matt Selvys comes out of the dugout, and here's probably the best for Al Downey.
- 2:27:51Bill Stemsky with 12-0 runs on the U.S. and the funny feedback is that, for the possibility that they're simply going to fly,
- 2:27:59the move to Stemsky, who has just had a long conversation with first-year Stemsky, down to second base.
- 2:28:07Rags is thinking in the third base, and breaking in from first-to-second, and there's the bottom.
- 2:28:11Perfect one, picked up by Shaw, and left the go to first-sacrifice works, down on second base, and Stemsky wins one down,
- 2:28:16Matt Selvys approves him, and the game of the hour, that ends Al Downey.
- 2:28:22And Jim Riff's perfect execution by these all-stars in almost every play, sacrificed Bunts in the lay-down perfectly,
- 2:28:30and the queries of the Bunts have done just what they're supposed to, and a wild-toed ball here.
- 2:28:39Al Downey wants two innings, he's got two hits, and walked nobody.
- 2:28:45Here's Matt Selvys, of the Cleveland Indians, on and lives in Jasper, Texas, and a hard-working man of field and out-back.
- 2:28:59One hot-bird to Al Downey goes to third, and got to mid-hour pass.
- 2:29:03Al was the second-first to mid-hour's one down, and now Riff is picked to foul down in that second base.
- 2:29:09Al Riff's got him all the way back, as Al wants to third, on the lead run, and down, and a two-down, and Alvys is on first, going with the inner strike.
- 2:29:18Matt Selvys picked a ball very high, one-hot, and Al went a step or two to his right field at the very three,
- 2:29:25and bounced the ball off for Al's, made a hurt and throw, and Riff scooped the ball out in the very third, and ran down to the second base.
- 2:29:32Alvys at first base, and Fragosi, were sacrificed, one-hot, three, and single, as their replacement for Riff O'Cetruselli, who started the game all the way into it.
- 2:29:45Fragosi, a California Indian jokers up, as we're in the 10th inning, with two down and a one-to-one ball game.
- 2:29:52Alvys at first short, on left-hander, facing right-hander for Fragosi, and throws a big breaking curve that is outside ball one.
- 2:30:05And Al Vyshalli is extended way off to the right field wall. The sun is dropped behind the left field stand.
- 2:30:12Al Vyshalli is now up the original shot, Al is short. It was a fast ball, but Fragosi throws a way to the right. He gives an as-a-nise. One-on-one.
- 2:30:23Fragosi has a very good fast ball and a very good curve. He tries to keep the ball down. Good pitcher has pretty good control.
- 2:30:34You're taking a sound on the mound. One-on-one the counter for Fragosi. Jim does not step out, but just stays there waiting for Fisk short to get ready.
- 2:30:42Al Vyshalli at the short lead off first base. Short delivers a fast ball and Fragosi will win down swinging on three-waterway pitches last time off left-hander and foul it off. One and two.
- 2:30:54His manager, currently the third base coach for the American League All-Stars, Bill Ridney, gives him the sign from third base.
- 2:31:01Magnet Elder, second, and White Stocks at first. And now McConnors, new to the game, and short. You're off for a few words, Sonny.
- 2:31:13We're going to mention that Max Elvis, who is on first base, has never stolen a many bases in his career, but he can run pretty well.
- 2:31:20And it wouldn't surprise us at all to see him get the go-ahead sign to try and get in scoring position.
- 2:31:27One and two to the top, two down. One to one to score. Bottom of the 10th, Fragosi strikes out.
- 2:31:35No one, no hit, no errors in one left. And now it's a 10-10, the last of the two ones, the American League, won.
- 2:31:46Hi, this is Nick O'Neill. Now I'm not very handy with the flywheel, but he's an engineer that's got to be a great player.
- 2:31:57After the day of the new climate fuel, the biggest standard door in his class is friends that have just sat around slapping each other back.
- 2:32:01We're not going to be a good friend.
- 2:32:03Righty. The good of engineers also get a fury with the largest option of the eighth and the biggest breaks in its class.
- 2:32:09Plus torsion bar suspension and very harsh interiors, rather fury soon. And just the threeest level engineers, little on the outside, fury also has the largest choke in its class.
- 2:32:20Your memory can be about the way you are from the beginning.
- 2:32:26I will never see a friend like you again.
- 2:32:33Yes, my little big, little furious fury soon. It's the high value car in the low price field, the success car of 67.
- 2:32:42He's fury today at your Timothy.
- 2:32:45Now, Jim Catfish Hunter. You're coming in the pitch, you're right ahead of the pitcher with a Kansas City raise and in the home uniform of the A's.
- 2:32:52The first as the white uniform with the green sleeves, green hats, white shoes and golden green stockings.
- 2:32:59And Jim Catfish Hunter is eight and seven this year at Kansas City.
- 2:33:04On a fine one, one average of 2.63, he was stuck out 105, his walk 50, giving up five home runs.
- 2:33:12The last time he worked was right here in Enaheim Friday night. He worked six innings.
- 2:33:17And Gene Alley is the first man that he will face.
- 2:33:23And Gouwacht is the pitcher at this shot, I wish you'd see.
- 2:33:31Left handed play-ars up once more for the National League.
- 2:33:36And I would imagine that we'll see a finisher or a pitcher or should I look at how he may see a sacrifice depending upon the situation.
- 2:33:44Many of Enaheim's three hands still behind the plate as General Alley has his fill in the first baseman.
- 2:33:49Now there's now the second baseman, Plays and Rocks, who will replace Ketcher-Sunney as a shortstop.
- 2:33:55Let's Robinson as he named it all the way after a base.
- 2:33:58And the after, Green Ark and Big is also named it in tact.
- 2:34:01Stem Steele, New Park and Conigliara, winning from left to right.
- 2:34:04Now Hunter is the fifth pitcher, Chance McGrathen, Peterson, Donning and now Hunter.
- 2:34:10Alley, after the fourth time, has slid to right, been called out on strikes and down it off to the first base to move the pitcher counter.
- 2:34:20Gene from Richmond, Virginia in his first All-Star game and his one-to-one ball game that has moved around long very quickly.
- 2:34:29Despite the fact we are now in the 11-20.
- 2:34:36Now there are one of our dark spine young pitchers at Kansas City.
- 2:34:40End of the on-bire, the Kansas City is to bring their up out of the second division, throws this one inside.
- 2:34:45So Alley thought as he got away, but on fire, and Lungy said it's like one.
- 2:34:50That pitcher has a good breaking ball, a good wide-sweeping curve at back to Alley out of there.
- 2:34:56Fastball outside this time, and it's one and one.
- 2:34:59On deck now are Tommy Helms of Cincinnati, who obviously will bat for the pitcher.
- 2:35:05Chris Schoen.
- 2:35:10Hunter is ready, fastball, high hopper, but foul pass while it's in the third base.
- 2:35:15The third by the ball boy down the left heel line.
- 2:35:18And it's like two. One and two.
- 2:35:21Helms is in the on-becton, as you mentioned, but I would imagine that this is only in the event that Alley would get on,
- 2:35:28and that is what alley is sending a good runner up to the plate. The possibility is that should have a knock-in,
- 2:35:35and he'll put up the left hand of the pitcher.
- 2:35:38All again, and that's what alley has. Not now, but on strikes.
- 2:35:42And that's the 21st strike out of the game.
- 2:35:44And now Helms doing a back, and the season is turning to that.
- 2:35:47They're fitting in on who's coming up.
- 2:35:49While alley is doing just what we thought, he's putting up a rusty style of the Houston Astros.
- 2:35:54And alley himself is trying to get ahead of the press alley's all-star style, and he wouldn't be here.
- 2:35:59Rusty Starr is in his first all-star game. He has seven on runs, 39 on the line, only 23 years old.
- 2:36:06Five years ago, he got $100,000 to side.
- 2:36:10And he was putting a hot back stone to get back.
- 2:36:12An example of a lead off of the American League. Starr, for the United States, with Houston, has hit the safe through in his last 10 games.
- 2:36:18But the left-handed batter steps in against the right-handed hunter, with one down and the 11th in the score.
- 2:36:24Starr has very good power, and now the American League defense has shifted over way to the right to play them to four.
- 2:36:32On a ready, fastball, right back to left center field.
- 2:36:36Nothing to clean.
- 2:36:38The Clemson Alley, and Starr holds on to first base with a single with one down and the 11th.
- 2:36:44And that will be left, really, very well.
- 2:36:50Very well.
- 2:36:52Very well.
- 2:36:54Well, even his first appearance as a consider for Lube Rock in the sixth inning was called out on strike.
- 2:37:00He fired the center in the ninth.
- 2:37:02Well, now he follows it.
- 2:37:06On a ready, and throws a fastball right away. It's like we're on a run of all-one.
- 2:37:16One run, six hits, no errors for the American League, and the Starr single. It is now a one run, six hits, no errors for the National League.
- 2:37:26On a ready again, back to the knees out of there this time. It's two-none.
- 2:37:30To the left hander for the National League will probably come into the ball game to replace Chris Short.
- 2:37:36He's been loosening up several times during the course of his ball game.
- 2:37:42Lina Haun is led to the long wall to get something like this, an all-star game.
- 2:37:46Now, on ball by May, he's proposed he can only go to first and dies, and just gets May, is by a step.
- 2:37:52Now, in the second, goes Leslie Starr.
- 2:37:56And for Gossy May to find play, the ball was hit into the dirt in front of home-place bounce high over Catfish Hunter's head,
- 2:38:02and for Gossy May to make a hurt throw and a quick charge out of the ball.
- 2:38:05And now, we're going to come out of here.
- 2:38:07He won 12 home runs and 52 RBIs on the year.
- 2:38:10And he's struck out his last three times in bad in this all-star game.
- 2:38:14Myrtle did one in the dirt in the first inning and beat it out for a hit, so it was one for four.
- 2:38:18He struck out swinging him a third and ninth innings in this all-alarm strikes in the sixth.
- 2:38:28Myrtle looks back at Starr in a second and throws a change of curveball at his strike one.
- 2:38:34And once again, the right-hander backed out of the box on the pitch, wide-breaking curveball by Catfish Hunter.
- 2:38:44Hunter's ready again. This time a fastball strike two.
- 2:38:51Now, this game may be called the year of his strikeout.
- 2:38:54But the first of the runs by anyone could change that to the year of Bill and the May.
- 2:39:01Starr but second. Two out in the 11th inning of the 38th annual all-star game.
- 2:39:06La Mania back. Kyle Kipsit just did get a piece of the ball over the end of his back and saves him a half-two strikes.
- 2:39:16And with Starr in scoring position, honestly, look at the outfield.
- 2:39:21He's going to be challenging some pretty strong arms in the strengths field.
- 2:39:24Aliva and especially Tony Canigliaro of the Whitefield for the American League.
- 2:39:28And maybe Alorino, as you said, Tony, was swinging his right arm around in the Whitefield, anticipating the possibility.
- 2:39:34As of always, punch Starr upstairs to the right, and it is still a two-strike and a fine attack by a second.
- 2:39:47Nobody has gotten as far as known base except the two men who have hit home runs, Richie Allen and Bert Robinson.
- 2:39:54Such has been the pitchers. There has been one walk in more than 20 strikeouts. Only six hits a piece.
- 2:40:03Honor is ready with a two-strike pitch. This time, the ball stays outside, and it's one and two.
- 2:40:11Only that looks like a breaking pitch for Thorne Harleys in before.
- 2:40:15Looks more like a hard slider jam. The ball, of course, that does not break as much as the sweeping curveball in Hunter's throws many times.
- 2:40:23One and two to Cremati with Starr but second. Honor checks Starr and now steps off.
- 2:40:37The money never moved from the batter's box, Hunter with the sign again.
- 2:40:42Reaches outside and rips one, and if you want to tell your man to land right, and back of the dugout, I would have been better.
- 2:40:52Stung the hands of Cremati who hit the ball. One and two. Cremati is up there really guarding the plate, and that was one of those breaking balls that Hunter throws.
- 2:41:01The big one. And looks like there's a fitter two outside, and Cremati reached right across the plate to foul a line and drive off.
- 2:41:07Aaron is the man on deck.
- 2:41:10The match in the fans, begin to clap it up.
- 2:41:14Honor delivers fast ball of just misses. It is two-two.
- 2:41:20Ed Runby has been working the plate today. Frank Secari at first, Louis DeMorro at second, and Burkhardt at third.
- 2:41:26One and a half to Cremati, but in right. Chris Gallagheros to the left.
- 2:41:30Reads from the sleeve. Here's the two-two pitch.
- 2:41:33Fast ball and he strikes out.
- 2:41:35No one comes in. No one is one left. In the middle of the 11th.
- 2:41:39The American lead one.
- 2:41:42I go, ladies and gentlemen, this is Rocky and I are going to find a fighter. You know ladies and gentlemen, I want you guys to know what it's like to get a ring.
- 2:41:50I want you to tell me how I'm going to pull you, if you get a ring, somebody's going to go bam, bam, hit you right at face.
- 2:41:55I'm going to give you a face hurt.
- 2:41:57You know, what you say before you go in a ring, use a ball, get balls right in your face, you're going to get a face hurt.
- 2:42:02If someone is going to ring, you're going to go bam, bam, hit you right at face. You're going to get another face hurt.
- 2:42:06Let me tell you, ladies and gentlemen, two face hurts in one go, going through your face. Any good.
- 2:42:12So what I do, ladies and gentlemen, I use the Gillette Super Stainless Blade.
- 2:42:15The one they call a spoiler. It's got this miracle plastic coating on the edge. It reduces the pull when you shave.
- 2:42:21You don't get a face hurt. If someone is going to go in a ring, a guy goes bam, bam, hit me right at face.
- 2:42:25I only get that one face hurt. And I usually win a fight.
- 2:42:28So I'll follow you, ladies and gentlemen. I will get the Gillette Super Stainless Blade.
- 2:42:32The spoiler is going to make your face feel just great.
- 2:42:36Unless somebody comes along and gives you a punch, but you let people can't do anything about that.
- 2:42:40The incident with Tony Kubeck and we do have to...
- 2:43:09And he'll be facing Brooks Robinson, Dick McCollough and Tony Aliva.
- 2:43:14You're in the bottom of the 11th of this 1-to-1 ball game.
- 2:43:17So now we've had Mary Schau, Jankos, Bob Gibson, Chris Short, and I'm Mike Cuellar.
- 2:43:23Chris Short worked two innings, walk one, the only walk of the ball game.
- 2:43:27The winner, the L-8 Mother, struck out one and said...
- 2:43:39Three out throws fairly hard. A left hander, of course, he has a pretty good slider and curve ball,
- 2:43:42and it appeared, Jim, that he was working on a screwball out on the bullpen.
- 2:43:45Brooks Robinson with a home run. The only run of the American League swings and hits this one high,
- 2:43:50and it'll probably reach the seats.
- 2:43:52Down the left field line, Brooks just got a little bit too far in front of it, and Jim McArthur races out to Mike Cuellar.
- 2:43:59He's giving Cuellar a little warning to keep the ball down on Robinson.
- 2:44:02Robinson likes that ball, felt high or above that pin, and McArthur knows it once and to keep that ball down around the knees.
- 2:44:11Right one to Robinson with McCollough and Aliva to follow.
- 2:44:17Cuellar and Aliva both left handers. Robinson at that, the right hander.
- 2:44:22Cuellar, the left hander. One and one now.
- 2:44:28And, of course, maybe Hank Darrell will reach into his bullpen, or his fence.
- 2:44:33Curve ball from Cuellar does not make it over the flight stage outside.
- 2:44:36He wants a new ball, with his two and one. One to one to score.
- 2:44:40The bottom of the 11th inning is a 38th annual All-Star game.
- 2:44:46Now the curve ball, five upstairs, it is 2-2.
- 2:44:57A reminder again of NBC's major league coverage on television Saturday.
- 2:45:01Most of the country will see the Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles.
- 2:45:05Those in Los Angeles and Chicago will see Houston at San Francisco.
- 2:45:08Cuellar's pitch is on the outside corner, and Robinson strikes out.
- 2:45:16Looks to their home plate for a while and had a few words with the eight-on-fire Ed Rowey.
- 2:45:20He's got the pitch minute for the outside. There's often trouble.
- 2:45:23Here is Dick McCollough.
- 2:45:27The eldest right hander is the common occurrence, the most common occurrence here in this All-Star game.
- 2:45:32McCollough has 16 home runs this year, so he can hit with power, but he's a facing the left hander.
- 2:45:36It's low, but on Mike Frear, he's all-in.
- 2:45:43Mays was shading McCollough slightly to right center field, but he just moved over a couple of steps over to the third base side.
- 2:45:49He's playing him a little bit so left field.
- 2:45:51We're going to miss Farmer-Collough. It's one and one.
- 2:46:01Well, Seabrook has not been used. Riesdale has not been used. Dosteen Ford, Mashenleg, Lombard, and Hornan and Harkins.
- 2:46:08Long to right field. I close for Maddie, but it is too high. Not nearly one and black.
- 2:46:13You know, the basket catch, he makes the second out of the inning.
- 2:46:18McCollough very nearly got around on the pitch and drove it out of here.
- 2:46:22It was a little high. There's Tony Lealock. It was one for four and struck out twice.
- 2:46:28As you mentioned, the name of Don's rise there, Jimmy, just got up.
- 2:46:32He's starting to throw very, very slowly, but he's loosening up.
- 2:46:40We are in the 11th inning of a ball game that started roughly about two hours and 40 minutes ago, with a curvature 92.
- 2:46:47It has dropped to 85 and the shot has come, and Aliva has lost his job again on the point of the minute.
- 2:46:53We are throwing a bat, and the Mashenleg dugout to the first base. Now, this time, pass the Mashenleg dugout.
- 2:46:59It's interesting to see the defensive alignment of the National League.
- 2:47:03Tony Perez, the third baseman, is playing right through the bag on the star of the line, as is Orlando Sopada.
- 2:47:09They're protecting one more against that extra base set.
- 2:47:13One strike down over the 2 out of the 11th. One to one in the score.
- 2:47:17Mike Cuellar, Houston throw strikes with a breaking pitch.
- 2:47:21All in a two.
- 2:47:27Now, everybody's been talking about the hitters.
- 2:47:31After this game, they're going to start talking about the pitchers.
- 2:47:35Amazing control. A high rate of strikeouts and very few hits, and thus far only two runs.
- 2:47:40Last ball high.
- 2:47:42Bill Lever, there's one and two.
- 2:47:44You've got to remember, Jim, that in an all-star game or a World Series, you see a pitcher once or twice, especially in an all-star game.
- 2:47:50You might see a pitcher one time, and the next time up, you're facing somebody different.
- 2:47:53It may be a pitcher you've never seen before, so you never get a chance to see how his ball is breaking.
- 2:47:57I am close.
- 2:48:00Yes, Bill Lever takes the ball two, two and two.
- 2:48:03You may have an opportunity as a hitter in the all-star game to see the opposing pitcher's curve ball one time.
- 2:48:09His fast ball one time. If he's got a lot of pitchers, he may throw you three, four different pitches.
- 2:48:13You never see the same one twice, and this makes it difficult for a hitter.
- 2:48:17Two, two pitch.
- 2:48:20Alina swings and misses, and very nearly that's three hours to mound, but it's back.
- 2:48:25Now he has lost to death.
- 2:48:27Another strikeout. Alonzo hits two hours on left, and now at the end of 11.
- 2:48:31Naturally one, then accidentally one.
- 2:48:35Camels, real big.
- 2:48:37That is five longer.
- 2:48:39Camels have been a favorite for years and years, and today they still are.
- 2:48:43Indians enjoy the real taste of the great tobaccos, and now you can also have this cooking pleasure of view camel filters.
- 2:48:50Camel filters have a real taste too.
- 2:48:56Camel filters have a real taste too.
- 2:49:01Camel filters have a real taste too.
- 2:49:05Camel filters, big arrest.
- 2:49:09Put them together, and what have you got? Two great camel cigarettes. That's what.
- 2:49:13Camel filters have a real taste too.
- 2:49:16And mine longer.
- 2:49:17Camel filters have a real taste too.
- 2:49:20And mine longer.
- 2:49:22Camel filters have a real taste too.
- 2:49:24And mine longer.
- 2:49:26Camel filters have a real taste too.
- 2:49:31We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 2:49:34All regular scheduled programs canceled to bring you the all-star game on WNBC, AM and FN New York.
- 2:49:41WNBC, AM and FN New York.
- 2:49:47Now I'll tell you something. I don't give a hoot how many are this way. I'm telling you sir, you've got a head full of chicken fat and good night.
- 2:49:54It will be a good night for you when you join Brad Cranbull from 9 to midnight on WNBC.
- 2:50:01Jim Simpson with Tony Kubeck, off of the 12th.
- 2:50:05On his rose and Aaron Swings and Mrs. It is strike one.
- 2:50:10On a ready again, it is pop-up.
- 2:50:13Robinson waving everybody off and now for Ghostie comes in and back of the mound and says I don't have it, and does.
- 2:50:24One down now on the 12th inning.
- 2:50:27And Sopeta.
- 2:50:30Now this is a continuing story that we have brought to you all along.
- 2:50:34Sopeta now is 0-4, which makes him 1-25 in his all-star career, but can make me all really rock with the back-handed stab at the warning track at the end of the 10th inning.
- 2:50:43And inside for Mutter, while 1.
- 2:50:49The American League is aligning defensively for Sopeta, playing him to hit late.
- 2:50:53I'll leave us playing toward right field.
- 2:50:56Gostemski left is toward left center. Good pitch from Hunter.
- 2:51:00Catches the inside corner. It's 1-1 to Sopeta.
- 2:51:05Before that line drive, it can nearly arrow flag down.
- 2:51:07Sopeta had ground about, hit into a double play and had been called out on strikes.
- 2:51:11Here's the 1-1 pitch from Catfish Hunter. He's straight up in the air.
- 2:51:15Back goes McCulloch on the grass and back a second base on the right field side and has it for the second out.
- 2:51:202 par-pots.
- 2:51:26And now, for the first time at back today, Tony Perez, who replaced Richie Allen at third base.
- 2:51:32Allen, who hits the home run for the only national league run and the second inning struck out swinging the next three times.
- 2:51:44Tony Perez, who has played first base, third base, or Cincinnati, makes a curve ball that's inside ball one.
- 2:51:53Tony was born in Cuba, now lives in Puerto Rico, is off to a great start.
- 2:51:5717-0 runs, 56 RBI's. And it's his first all-star game and he swings and fouls tips at strike one.
- 2:52:07Well, Richie Allen got his home run in the second, deleted off, Rick Robinson got one in the sixth, and that's been it. We're now in the 12th.
- 2:52:19Connor just standing there, standing in. Now ready to pitch to Perez of Cincinnati.
- 2:52:23Breaking pitch that he fouls down the right field line, it'll go deep in the seats.
- 2:52:28One and two.
- 2:52:40Tony ready again.
- 2:52:43On deck is McCover, who has not yet batted either in this all-star game.
- 2:52:47Last ball and strike three, we've got another strikeout. And that's the 26th of this ball game.
- 2:52:53And that's the first time so hits the horizon left. In the middle of the 12th, and I asked what he'd want. The American League wants.
- 2:52:59Why two fly, and there's first line in premium, I have no idea exactly what that means.
- 2:53:05Who's Herbert?
- 2:53:06He's Detroit. Let's see if he gets confused in tire stores. When it comes to buying a tire, I just have to go along with what the salesman says.
- 2:53:13We showed Mr. Herbert how he could pick out his next tires himself at BF Goodrich. You do it with the tire calculator.
- 2:53:19It asks you some questions about your driving, about the speeds and roads and so on.
- 2:53:23Then it tells you which BFG tire suits you best. What did Mr. Herbert think of this?
- 2:53:28I think it's a very good idea.
- 2:53:30Very good. You can figure out exactly what kind of tire your car needs.
- 2:53:34Which I said before, something that's always confused me. I think it's a great idea.
- 2:53:38A great idea. The tire calculator. Come in and try it at BF Goodrich, the straight talk tire people.
- 2:53:44Help yourself to a tire calculator and some straight talk at any BF Goodrich store or dealer.
- 2:53:50One nearest to you is listed in your yellow page.
- 2:53:52We're now on the top of the 12th inning. If there's anything can happen and it already has, the all-star game, the 58th handle, it is 1-1.
- 2:54:00Arm and killer brew, hitler's in four attempts.
- 2:54:02The off the face to left-hander is Mike Puyard. Killer brew, the last time off, checked his swing, tried to duck out of the way of the pace and coughed it up to the second base.
- 2:54:12The American League at first, as the home team batted last or won, can win it for them in the last of the 12th.
- 2:54:21Nobody's been getting many runs in this ballgame. Puyard pitches and as the ground ball to Ali, it's shortstop.
- 2:54:25He waits on the ball, now guns it over to first-versa-pata has it for the first down.
- 2:54:30That will bring up Tony Canigliaro, who applied to ride in the second again on the ninth and struck out twice in between.
- 2:54:39The lights, of course, are on as a matter of fact, were turned on before the game began at 4.15 Pacific Coast time this afternoon.
- 2:54:55Puyard throws, the Canigliaro hits an inside pitch, he was banned on the play and cleared Bill Rigney, the manor to the angels and the coach at third base, out of the coach's box.
- 2:55:05Tony has 13 home runs, 46 RBI's and a great voice. He's a recording star.
- 2:55:12Seems very well, led to Lig at home runs at age 20. Another pitch in on the fifth, and again fouled off, but this time up so viciously, it is strike two.
- 2:55:21One out of the 12th, National League One, American League One.
- 2:55:25Jim and the American League bullpen, Joel Harlan of the White Sox has gotten up in his beginning to throw.
- 2:55:33Puyard is ready, fastball foul at the plate, bounced up and hit Canigliaro on the shoulder, and the cover remains two strikes.
- 2:55:45Well, the pen and races again after this one is over, the White Sox go to Cleveland and Pittsburgh goes to St. Louis for games on Thursday, but everybody's attention here now is on the 38th All-Star game.
- 2:55:55Two strikes, Canigliaro with one out in the bottom of the 12th. Fastball hit off the fifths again, the cover may have a play in back of the plate on the high-pull foul, and does for the second half.
- 2:56:05Alcarod Yosremski, who has been one of the most successful, matters for either team. He has a double in the single, he struck out his first time up, and the only walk is against 25 strikeouts, his last time up.
- 2:56:21He was sacrificed a second, but then on a hard hit by Alvers to the shortstop, Yosremski was caught between second and third and run down.
- 2:56:31Two outs, Carla left-hander in to step against the left-hand of Cuiard, takes it inside, slotted for ball one.
- 2:56:41Now once more for the National League, Don Drysdale is beginning to throw, so each ball club has a pitcher up and getting ready.
- 2:56:50Law again to Canigliaro, Yosremski, and it is two balls.
- 2:56:57Gellibur led off the bottom of the 12th by grounding up, Canigliaro fouled out with the catcher, and here's Carl Yosremski, who has 19 home runs and 56 RBI's this year.
- 2:57:06A lot of power in this youngster. Outside, it is ball three.
- 2:57:13Freehand is the batter on deck.
- 2:57:18Yosremski looked down to Bill Rigney, Jim, but I would think that Ankole will have him hitting. If he gets the good pitch that he can hit, he'll be going for everything.
- 2:57:27Last ball and he hits it. One hop across the glove of Maserlowski.
- 2:57:32Yosremski rounds, first and holds up there with his third hit in four official times as well.
- 2:57:37And here comes Bill Freehand, who is hole for three.
- 2:57:45That's the first hit off Cuiar, who is struck out too.
- 2:58:01And Tony, you were so right again. Here is Freehand with all the power to end a 12 home runs, 33 RBI's, a light hander against the left hand of Cuiar, who makes his move to first.
- 2:58:12But Yosremski was only a step or so off the bat.
- 2:58:18Ponderos come out of the dugout for the American League. It is in the on deck circle, but should Freehand get on, I'm sure Ankole will use a pinch hitter.
- 2:58:28They are ready and delivers low to Freehand, ball one.
- 2:58:34Reza third, the fated first, out of it short, Maserlowski at second, Aaron in left, Clemente in right, Maison center, McHarver now the catcher, and Cuiar the pitcher for the National League.
- 2:58:52Cuiar works to the plate, ground ball, Reza's chances of third, he'll go to second for the fourth, and that's the end of the inning. A run's on one hit, no errors in one man left, and now at the end of 12, scoring the National League one and the American League one.
- 2:59:05Now let's take a break and talk about another kind of excitement. It's something useful and lively, and it has a great shape. What is it? A 67 Dodge Dodge. This is a big compact, big arm luxury and comfort, with long padded seats and full carbon.
- 2:59:20The Dodge bottle line up is big too, there are two door hard tops, two and a quarter or so hands in the first, and the fun way of getting out of the Somme, the ever pocketed Dodge, is Dodge convertible.
- 2:59:30And speaking of excitement, have you ever seen a new Dodge GT hard top? It comes with the things you expect the sports car to have, like bucket seats, center console, and a charge of spirited engines, up to the optional 4 barrel 273 cubic inch VA.
- 2:59:44It's a picket Dodge, any Dodge. It's the quickest way out of a Dell driving rough. The arch looks like fun and it is, and the price, that's the thing small about Dodge, Dodge. See it soon as your Dodge deals.
- 2:59:55The good guys and the white hats. We move now to the top of the 13th inning, and buddy Blacke, let's see if you can get us some runs.
- 3:00:04Alright Jim, thank you. Good to be back with you. I've already made one tour of the dugout, looking for a post game still that never came about.
- 3:00:14Jim Katz, face hunter, brilliant young Brian Andrews on the mound right now. We've seen magnificent pitching in this ball game. We traveled out of the top half of the 13th.
- 3:00:24The National League All-Stars won. The American League All-Stars won. Both runs, direct result of home runs.
- 3:00:34Zip by Ritzy Allen back in the second for the National League. And Brooks Robinson cleared the wall in the left in the sixth. Here's Tim McCarver, young fine catcher of the Cardinals from Memphis, Tennessee.
- 3:00:48A left-handed hitter and hunter, bends in a curve for strike one. Tim McCarver, who scored the winning run in last years, all-star game.
- 3:00:58And Tim runs unusually well for a catcher. These brazes from foul upstairs on the left. McCown moves on now to strike two.
- 3:01:09Bill Mazurowski to follow. And then Gene Alley. And everyone enjoying this win.
- 3:01:19The two-strike delivery. Swung on, a line, drive down the left field line. Could be a problem. Yosemski is over. Can't make the play. It rolls to the barrier.
- 3:01:27In the second base, Tim McCarver. He'll hold there with a stand-up double.
- 3:01:34Good try by Kyle Yosemski, but the ball kept slicing away from him. The left-handed hitting McCarver, hitting it down the left field line. He just did not catch up to it.
- 3:01:44Carl will ordinarily play most every hitter into left-center field. I think this is the influence of that strange con toers, the park in which he plays, the Fenway Park in Boston.
- 3:01:53You give everybody the line, and you play fairly shallow, you have to, and into left-center field.
- 3:02:00Well, I would imagine now, with Mazurowski up, he'll be trying to advance the runner McCarver into third base so that he can score on that sacrifice fly.
- 3:02:11The American League, set their defense for the Bunt. Shallow at first base, is Harman Gillibrook. Brooks Robinson must hold his ground, even with a bag at third.
- 3:02:21McCarver, we told you, is a good runner. Mazurowski squares the Bunt. It squares the back foul towards the screen for strike one.
- 3:02:27Mazurowski, none for four in this ballgame. Twice is rolled out to the shortstop, and twice is going out to the left fielder.
- 3:02:34Mazurowski, fire-uply built. A right-handed hitter. Tim McCarver at second base. There's nobody out here in the top half of any number 13.
- 3:02:44Joel Harlan continues to work in the bullpen for the American League, and Don Drysdale continues to throw for the National League.
- 3:02:52Strike one in the con to Mazurowski. Extremely shallow now, Harman Gillibrook. And the pitch by Hunter.
- 3:03:01A bunted ball, it's a good Bunt down the first base line, picked off by Gillibrook, throwing to McCarver at first base, covering for the up.
- 3:03:08A perfect sacrifice Bunt for Mazurowski, and now the infield must play in.
- 3:03:12And Dean Alley is the hitter due here now for the National League.
- 3:03:23Dean Alley, no luck in four tries in this ballgame. Joel Flender right-handed hitter. We've seen more votes than any of the men.
- 3:03:30The All-Star selections.
- 3:03:36With the American League infield playing in, Hunter's job will be to try and keep the ball down, keep it low, try to force the ground ball.
- 3:03:44Alley's up there battling in the opposite direction. He wants to get the ball, belt higher above it so he can hit the ball to the outfield.
- 3:03:50So we've got a battle between that pitch and hitter going on constantly.
- 3:03:55The infield is in tight, and Hunter appears that he is going to pitch from the stretch position, and the infield now is shallowed up.
- 3:04:04It's a one-to-one ballgame at the top of the 13th. Hunter pitching from the stretch position, and the fastball barreled through there for strike one.
- 3:04:14And the reason Hunter now is working from the stretch position, he's gone against the Bunt.
- 3:04:22And the Carver at third. He scored the winning run last year for the National League.
- 3:04:28Jim began the inning with a double. The next pitch, Kerb, and this one. Ben's a little bit too low. Ball one and strike one.
- 3:04:37Gene Alley at the plate. We see Pete Rose out on deck. The outfield is straight away, and reasonably shallow.
- 3:04:46The infield is in tight. Ball one and strike one. Gene Alley. Hunter accepts the sign, and now delivers the one-to-one for Chikurbo, a way of death by Alley hits one and two.
- 3:05:00Well now with two strikes, the attempt at a squeeze is all but eliminated, buddy, so it looks like Alley will be swinging away once more.
- 3:05:08And we'll see now how Hunter goes into the full line. He might, but he seems comfortable now in this position. He will not go into his wind-up.
- 3:05:18The one-two pitch. Slumrun and the one-to-one strike. And that is strikeout number four for Tim Katz, his honey.
- 3:05:29And here comes the real Bulldog. Rose, hitting here.
- 3:05:42And Rose, of course, is a switch-hitter, and right now we've got a little conference on the mound. Freehand has gone out to talk to Hunter, and he's just making sure that Hunter knows how to pitch Rose, whether he's a high-ball hitter, low-ball hitter. He wants to know where to make sure to settle the youngster down.
- 3:06:00And Rose, a flying hitter. He has collected 414 hits his past two years with Cincinnati. He infield now, normal depth. Still 15 from the stretch position as Hunter, and he delivers fastball.
- 3:06:13This one sails high and away to Pete Rose for ball one. There are two outs here in the top of the 13th. Tim McCarver's third base. It's a one-to-one ball game.
- 3:06:26Rose, stockily built. He's a good runner. Now the full win by Hunter and the pitch. A curve up too high, ball two, two and all.
- 3:06:38Willie May, kneels in the on-decks, sir. This has been an excellent ball game.
- 3:06:46Jamfax House here's the big A, and a Hyme Stadium. A curve. That's what bends in for a strike. It's two and one. So Hunter, dropping behind Pete Rose, comes back with a breaking ball. He spins it in for a strike. It's two and one.
- 3:07:07The two-one delivery. Slung on, and high in the air. This one is shallow in center field. Who wants it? Nicola drifting back out there. Saliva comes in and puts it away for out number three.
- 3:07:18So the National League denied here in the top half of inning number 13. No runs, one hit, and a man left on base. Kledoff doubled by Tim McCarver goes for nuts. And the score at the end of 12-1 happens to play. The National League All-Stars won. The American League All-Stars won.
- 3:07:40Hello, uh, face? Are you really my face? Yes, what do you want? Well, you're gonna think this is silly, but I've been told to ask you about this Gillette Technatic Razor. Oh, it's beautiful.
- 3:08:00Beautiful? It looks kind of funny to me. It shaves beautiful. Shaves beautiful. I like being treated gently. I do have feelings. I never meant to hurt your feelings. The Technatic thing feels very light. It puts less pressure on pressure. How I hate pressure. Yes, I'd notice that.
- 3:08:16Now, Nic, do you know what one Nic can do to my pride? With the Technatic, you're just not going to make me so much. That is a fact.
- 3:08:23Nic, you really do like this Gillette Technatic, don't you? Well, why didn't you speak up before? Faces should be seen, not heard.
- 3:08:33The Gillette Technatic Razor. Ask your face about it.
- 3:08:45The sense of view playing on the last pass of the 13th inning, and on the mound now, on the National League, the big, strong one, and it's Don Drysdale and the Dodgers. Big D, now 30 years of age, in his 12th Major League, 6th.
- 3:09:07Drysdale, 6 feet 6, 218 pounds, so he becomes the tallest and heaviest of all the National League All-Star.
- 3:09:18Warren and Van Ice, California, now makes his home at Hinton Hill. He has quite a mistake there.
- 3:09:24Drysdale will move, of course, into the number 7 position in the batting order. Rose will stay in the position he pinched in number 9.
- 3:09:35He leaves things off. It will be Jim Hunter. So, pitcher against pitcher, right-hander against right-hander here.
- 3:09:44And off we go in the last half of the 13th. Drysdale accepts the sign, the big man delivers.
- 3:09:51He's got our fastball. Come on and miss, Strike 1. He buzzed this one pretty good. Don Drysdale plays a 20-game winner. In 1962, he captured 25. In 1965, he won 23.
- 3:10:06Fastball outside, and Hunter almost figured on this one. All got a five to catcher, Tim McRiver. It's ball one and Strike 1. Rose now playing in second base. Perez at third.
- 3:10:25Ball one is Strike 1. Jim Fragosi will follow, and the fish now to Hunter. This is outside, it's two and one. It's a one-to-one ball game in the last half of the 13th.
- 3:10:36The National League's only tally came in the second on a home run by Richie Allen. The two-one fish swung on and missed. It levels the count at two and two.
- 3:10:47The American League tally in inning number 6, a home run by Brooks Robinson.
- 3:10:52Buddy, I imagine if Hank Bauer had a left-handed pinch-itter at this time, he would have used him for 100. All these guys left is Kazanova, Ken Berry, and Etch-a-Baron.
- 3:11:01That's right. Filed back by Hunter, the count remains even, then two and two. And Hunter has done a good job on the line. He has already worked in 3-inning.
- 3:11:15It's all the biggest try to ever witness a ball game here, and then I've seen him enjoying this one. Here comes the two-to-fitch.
- 3:11:23Swung on and missed. He's got him on strike, and Strikeout 3 continues.
- 3:11:27Jim Fragosi takes in. Jim is 1-3 in the long game. He is singled, sacrificed, and struck out twice. Jim with pretty good power.
- 3:11:47He's a big man for his short stuff. He takes a strike, like Tony Kubek on my left. Fragosi, 6-2, and he weighs 198 pounds.
- 3:11:59And Buddy, if there were ever a stage set for some maroaks by the hometown boy, that's right. Here's the ground ball of the Perez at third.
- 3:12:05It's a long throw across. He's got him. But it didn't happen.
- 3:12:13So there are two outs. And here comes Brooks Robinson. And you know that Brooks right here has only one throw in line. He's going to go for it all.
- 3:12:23Brooks won for five in this game. And that one hit on Buddy Big. The home run back in the sixth.
- 3:12:29Right-hander against right-hander, and Drysdale goes to work.
- 3:12:33Sidearm fastball sails high and inside for ball one. Two outs, and nobody on the last half of the 13th inning.
- 3:12:41He knows that I've never seen Drysdale pitch as Buddy mentioned. He's tall and he comes from the side quite often.
- 3:12:46He still has a very good fastball and moves into the right-handed hitters. Once the ball comes overhand with a fastball, one that takes off as a good hard slider and occasional slow curve ball.
- 3:12:56He only has all the social graces, but out there in the middle of the diamond, he's a real tiger, like a backroom brawler.
- 3:13:03And the next pitch. Swung on line drive. Off to Clever Perez. It travels down the left field line. And now, him and Hager, they're calling this ball foul.
- 3:13:14And Buddy, it appeared that the ball hit Perez's love, but apparently it did not. Had it touched his love, it would have been a fair ball because the ball wasn't fair territory when Perez almost touched it.
- 3:13:26Henry Aaron Clark also was a fair ball. He played it and touched and threw in the second base to try to get Robinson, but now, Robinson's coming back to head and Bill Ridley is going out to argue.
- 3:13:38Bill finally has... Bill was not watching either umpire, Ken Burtard or Emmett Ashford. And this ball did appear to go off the glove of Perez and then carry him into foul territory.
- 3:13:52But evidently, he had reached across the line when the ball hit his glove. So it evens the count on Robinson at ball one and strike one.
- 3:14:02And Perez now has almost as tried the line at third and deep.
- 3:14:09Rysedale taking too much time and Robinson steps out.
- 3:14:19And the late innings and protecting against the extra base at East Dany right on that line.
- 3:14:43And the American League All-Star story here in the last half of the 13th facing John Ryse. And the score at the end of 13, the National League One and the American League One.
- 3:15:03And the score of line two fly and this first line in premium I have no idea exactly what that means.
- 3:15:13When it comes to buying a tire, I just have to go along with what the salesman says.
- 3:15:17We showed Mr. Herbert how he could pick out his next tires himself at BF Goodrich. You do it with the tire calculator. It asks you some questions about your driving, about the speeds and roads and so on.
- 3:15:29Then it tells you which BFG tire suits you best. What did Mr. Herbert think of this?
- 3:15:34I think it's a very good idea. Very good. You can figure out exactly what kind of tire your car needs.
- 3:15:40Which as I said before is something that's always confused me. I think it's a great idea.
- 3:15:44A great idea. The tire calculator. Come in and try it at BF Goodrich, the Straight Talk Tire people.
- 3:15:51The Straight Talk Tire people are ready for you now at any BF Goodrich store or dealer. Check your yellow pages. The name of the one nearer is Q.
- 3:16:00I'd like to go along with Jim Simpson and Tony Kubeck. Bring it all your way from the big A, Anaheim Stadium and Anaheim, California.
- 3:16:09We're set now for action. The top half of any number 14 is a one-to-one ballgame. And again, the color for you. Here comes Jim.
- 3:16:17All right, buddy. One-to-one, what he made is a brilliant comedienne, Hank Aaron. Unless it pitches you to go against, catch fish hunters.
- 3:16:26As we are now in extra innings. And that is the understatement of the year. This is the top of the 14th.
- 3:16:34Not already for his first pitch to what he made. He fouled it off to the right, strike one.
- 3:16:39Maze has been called out on strikes, fly to center, and grounded to short.
- 3:16:43For the fourth time, even though he did not make an appearance until the sixth inning.
- 3:16:53Not already again. Fastball backs Maze out. This game now is approximately three hours and 15 minutes old, and it has gone from 92 degrees at game time to a pleasant 81 now.
- 3:17:05The pitch is one on by Maze. It's one and two. Jim, and when you think of an all-star, you know, Willie Maze or any of the others, you think of the big home run hitter, you think of a pitcher that can strike out the hitter.
- 3:17:16But one thing we've seen today, something that also makes them all stars, is the ability to execute the easy plays. The fundamentals in baseball, that means so much in winning ballgames.
- 3:17:25All hits right away, center field, and Aliva starts back, and now holds up and has it for the first time of the 14th.
- 3:17:31Although he drove a little back somewhat, he didn't get out of it. It was a breaking ball that Willie waved at.
- 3:17:37Hit a little on the end of the bat and just didn't quite get a hold of it.
- 3:17:40While a personal pride on any phase, or plays any part of Major League Baseball, the fellas' riding that are played right now with Roberto Clemente is out for blood.
- 3:17:51He beat a ball into the ground in the first inning and went for a base hit. Since then, he has struck out swinging, called out on strikes, and struck out twice more swinging.
- 3:17:58He has struck out his last four times at bat. After coming into this ballgame with one of the fine averages in the National League and in Major League Baseball, about 352 takes ball one outside.
- 3:18:12And of course, all of these stars in this classic, Jim, play hard, but I don't think you find any that plays this game more intently than Roberto Clemente.
- 3:18:21On a ready, outside corner, about children high, and it's a strike, one-on-one. There have been 28 strikeouts in this game that has broken all records, and only one walk.
- 3:18:34Each team has 7th, it's one-to-one, but then he watches another one go outside for ball two, two-and-one.
- 3:18:42Now it seems ages ago that Richie Allen hit a home run into the center field seats, that was in the second inning, they could have won nothing, and then they in the sixth inning, Rich Robinson came back with a home run over left field wall.
- 3:18:56And that's the score. Two-and-one now, Clemente with one down and the 14th. Round ball, and Colliff follows it to fix it up and close it out.
- 3:19:06Colliff waited on the ball, Tony, and the last moment had little trouble with it, but through and on it's 20th time. And here comes Hank Aaron.
- 3:19:16Aaron reached on the fourth play in the first, and then Stoller base, beat out an infield hit in the fourth, was called out on strikes, and a leather grounded out the next three times.
- 3:19:28Two out now, and the 14th on it throws Aaron, bounces a foul toward the American League dugout and over the roof and into the stands. Strike one.
- 3:19:41And at this point every hitter going to that plate gym is thinking of just one thing, and that's the end of the hall with one swing, so we're seeing some pretty good cuts at these pitches, and consequently we're seeing more strikeouts too.
- 3:19:53On a ready again, this one has hit off the fifth foul and hits on top of the National League dugout. Two strikes.
- 3:20:04Looking down the list of possible pinch hitters, Ken Berry, Paul Casanova, and Andy Etcheverry remain for the American League, and we are about to run the gamut of the American League.
- 3:20:18Looking down the list, I can't find a one, Tony, they're all used up. Jim, I can't either. I think Hank Bauer has a little bit of the upper hand, he's still got three left.
- 3:20:32Walter Alton does not have a catcher left, should something happen to Tim McIron. One, two, pitch, hit off the fifths, and very high in center field.
- 3:20:38The Lever lost it for a while and the light's now under it, and has it for the third out. No one's no hits nor is in the four teams, and at the end of the four teams, the National League won, and the American League won.
- 3:20:54In 1955, the key word for the Brooklyn Dodgers was first. They won the first ten games of the season, setting a league record.
- 3:21:01They clinched the National League pen on September 8th, the first team ever to do it that early, and they topped it all off by winning the World Series, bringing Brooklyn its first world championship.
- 3:21:11Eight years earlier, in 1947, Chrysler Corporation scored a first of its own. In that year, Chrysler set up its Master Technician Service Conference, the oldest and largest training program in the auto industry.
- 3:21:24This conference, divided into monthly sessions held at local Chrysler Plymouth and Dodge dealers, keeps experienced technicians up to date on the latest service techniques.
- 3:21:34For even more advanced instruction, these sessions also receive visits from the Chrysler Mobile Training Center, sort of a technical school on wheels.
- 3:21:42All this ends up with the best possible care for your car and you. Customer care, and exclusive at your Chrysler Plymouth and Dodge dealers.
- 3:21:51Back at Anaheim, Jim Simpson with Tony Kubeck and Buddy Blatner. We move now to the bottom of the 14th inning.
- 3:21:58Dick McCullough, Armand Kilibrew and Tony Canigliaro, the scheduled hitters, to face Don Drysdale, now working his second inning.
- 3:22:07There have been 28 strikeouts, seven hits by each team, including home runs by Richie Allen and Brooke Troutensen.
- 3:22:17And if you just joined us, that brings you up to date. McCullough ready to face the right-handed.
- 3:22:21Drysdale takes outside with a fast ball from Drysdale, wall one.
- 3:22:28The faders at first, rows at the second. Alley remains at short, where he's been the entire game.
- 3:22:33Perez at third, Aaron at left, Mays and Center, Clemente and Wright. Carver the catcher, and there's ball two.
- 3:22:41Maryshell, Jenkins, Gibson, short, Cuiar and now Drysdale for the National League.
- 3:22:49Tom Sever and Danny LaMastra are the only two left for the National League, and LaMastra has a pulled muscle in the rib cage, so that leaves Sever.
- 3:22:56Eyeball hits the right field, Clemente trots in, waves off, rows are come out in the short ride and takes it.
- 3:23:04And now the first out of the 14th, the American League 14th. That will bring up Tony Oliva.
- 3:23:12Well Oliva has faced a couple of left-handers in his last couple of times as bad, and now is up against the right-handed, Don Drysdale.
- 3:23:22Drysdale this year with a 7-10 record has surrendered eight home runs.
- 3:23:28You're thinking what everybody in the ballpark is thinking, and what Oliva will be swinging for, and LaMastra throws and has them all lined to right center field.
- 3:23:35Dopping into the base hit, picked up on the third out by Woody Mays, and Oliva with one down and the 14th is on, bringing to bat Harman Killabrew.
- 3:23:48First hit off down to LaMastra, and here's Killabrew, who's been up five times in the valley here.
- 3:23:55The four today, Killabrew has quite an all-star record. He was 6 for 14 for 429 in two home runs.
- 3:24:02Now he is 6 for 19th in all-star play.
- 3:24:07Sidearm pitch fastball and pretty quick join, low ball one, is a Killabrew.
- 3:24:11And Jim, we've mentioned before about how much these all-star games mean to the individual players, and also to the leagues.
- 3:24:17And Harman Killabrew, I rode in on the plane with him, and Rod Karoo for Minneapolis, and Harman has a full groin muscle, and yet he hasn't begged out of that lineup.
- 3:24:25He's still in there swinging to bat after 14 innings.
- 3:24:28Rise down out of the stretch, and look at Oliva first, and now checks Oliva at first, and throwing track in time.
- 3:24:35Want to know the killer, Bruce.
- 3:24:38Last of the 14th inning of the 38th annual all-star game, it is all tied at 1-1.
- 3:24:47Now back by Killabrew, pitching on the fifth, it's 1-1.
- 3:24:51Don Drysdale does not have the ability to get the ball to home plate very quickly.
- 3:24:59He's big and tall and lanky and everything else, so there's a possibility of a steel thread by Oliva, although he is not a base-stealing threat really.
- 3:25:07But we could see Oliva trying to get into scoring position.
- 3:25:11Killabrew waits, Oliva leads our first base in the 14th inning with 1-down.
- 3:25:16Drysdale has the sign and is in the stretch.
- 3:25:19Now a check at first.
- 3:25:21Oliva is back.
- 3:25:23God remains 1-1.
- 3:25:26We have not heard the crowd yet, estimated that nearly 46,000, and I don't believe a soul has gone home.
- 3:25:32But the game already now comes with a pitch right down the middle strike two.
- 3:25:39And now for the first time of the day, we are noticing the wind, which is blowing toward left field.
- 3:25:47It is not a strong wind at all, but there's been little or no wind here today.
- 3:25:51And again, it started at 4-15 California time, 1-2 now to Killabrew.
- 3:25:58Drysdale taking the time.
- 3:26:01Grows it from the outside corner and Killabrew is called out on strike.
- 3:26:06The 29th strikeout of this ball game.
- 3:26:16That brings up Tony Canigliaro.
- 3:26:18Tony is glad to write twice as strikeout swinging twice, and the last time, I fouled with a catch in McCarland.
- 3:26:25As we've told you, Tony has the power also. He has 13 home runs this year.
- 3:26:33Drysdale working now with two out of the Levant first, and Canigliaro fouled it off to the right.
- 3:26:39Boston Red Sox, very much in penance contention, they're now in fifth place, six games out.
- 3:26:47I'm rather happy with the fact that other remaining 80 ball games in the American League 50 will be played at very friendly Fenway Park.
- 3:26:54The first half of the season may have done very well on the road.
- 3:26:58One strike to Canigliaro, two down on the 14th, one to one to score.
- 3:27:02Aliva at first, and Drysdale taking his time.
- 3:27:11Don again checks Aliva at first base.
- 3:27:15The crowd hums a bit, but remember Aliva, if he should score, the ball game is over, and Drysdale wants to keep him close.
- 3:27:22Don works Saturday, four and two-thirds innings, and here he is strong again.
- 3:27:26Another check at first base, and Aliva was just a step or two off.
- 3:27:32And mentioning the Red Sox surge this year, Jim, they of course have always been a home ball club,
- 3:27:36and have never been able to win on the road very often, but they, this year, are putting together some very important wins on the road,
- 3:27:43and this has made them penance contenders for the first time in many years.
- 3:27:47Drysdale staring in for the sign after having stepped off once.
- 3:27:52The stretch, fast ball, which is low, it is one and one to Canigliaro.
- 3:28:00Donny has had 11 home runs in his last 28 ball games, which is part of pace.
- 3:28:11And Drysdale is taking his time now, he doesn't want to get that lost tag hung up on him,
- 3:28:17so he's walking around in that mound, looking around to see if his outfielders and infielders are positioned the way he wants them,
- 3:28:23and he's finally getting ready to pitch right now.
- 3:28:27Don is ready now, checking Aliva's sidearm pitch, stays inside, it is two and one.
- 3:28:33Two and one to Canigliaro with Aliva at first base.
- 3:28:37They're all game fast approaching the three and a half hour mark, and we're in the bottom of the 14th inning.
- 3:28:43This pitch is a good pitch for a steal attempt, Jim, with two and one on Canigliaro.
- 3:28:48Drysdale doesn't want, if he doesn't have to, to go to three and one on Canigliaro, so we could see a possible steal attempt.
- 3:28:56Aliva is not moving, the ball is far off and upstairs to the right by Donny, and it is two-two.
- 3:29:06Well, after this, of course, the teams go back to their penises,
- 3:29:11and the White Sox open at Cleveland on Thursday, and Pittsburgh moves into St. Louis.
- 3:29:15The White Sox and the Cardinals at the All-Star break, White Sox leading Detroit by two games,
- 3:29:20and the Cardinals leading the Cubs by three and a half.
- 3:29:23The only banks of the Cubs are saying that the Cubs' seven-game losing streak will be broken at the expense of the Dodgers,
- 3:29:28he announced, starting Thursday.
- 3:29:30Two and two, bottom of the 14th.
- 3:29:33Canigliaro waits, Drysdale is ready, the ball is low, Aliva is running, the ball is waiting for him,
- 3:29:38and MacCopper is joining off.
- 3:29:40MacCopper throws, and that ends the 14th inning.
- 3:29:43Canigliaro still at back, no runs, one hit, no errors, and none left,
- 3:29:47but now at the end of the 14th, National League won, the American League won.
- 3:29:54Hey, Mitch, suddenly I've got an itch to switch to one of those new longer cigarettes.
- 3:29:58Great, Skitch, then switch, but there's only one hitch, Mitch, I don't know which to switch to.
- 3:30:03Well, pardon the pitch, but there's only one long cigarette to which you should switch, Skitch.
- 3:30:07Which, Mitch?
- 3:30:08Which?
- 3:30:09The new Super King-sized Winston.
- 3:30:13Is there any other?
- 3:30:14After all, anyone can make a cigarette long, but...
- 3:30:18It's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long.
- 3:30:23And how does Winston make it long? With an extra measure of that famous good taste
- 3:30:29that has made Winston America's largest selling cigarette.
- 3:30:32So if you've got an itch to switch to a long cigarette, but don't know which to switch to,
- 3:30:37switch to the new Winston Super King.
- 3:30:48We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 3:30:51And open us today's New York Daily News for the heartwarming story of how the Irish
- 3:30:56have been charmed by Jackie Kennedy, Caroline, and John John.
- 3:30:59This exclusive special series on the former First Families visit to the Emerald Isle
- 3:31:03starts today in the New York Daily News.
- 3:31:06All regularly scheduled programs canceled to bring you the all-star game on WNBC,
- 3:31:11AMNF, and New York.
- 3:31:21Honor is ready with the first pitch of the 15th inning.
- 3:31:24The Zepeda, it is inside ball one, and this has set a new record for the longest all-star
- 3:31:28game played as we move to the 15th inning.
- 3:31:30And remember, there have been 29 strikeouts.
- 3:31:32Another record.
- 3:31:33This one is hit to right field, back close to Nick Leal, back on the warning track,
- 3:31:37looking up and has it, a step from the wall.
- 3:31:41Zepeda is out again.
- 3:31:43He is over six on the day one for 27 in his all-star career, but today twice as it's
- 3:31:49deep and hard-riven balls to right field.
- 3:31:53And you can see the stroke that Zepeda developed in Candlestick Park with a wind blowing out
- 3:31:58to right field.
- 3:31:59I think if Orlando had been in Candlestick Park, he would have had himself a home run.
- 3:32:03Here is Tony Perez, who's been at that only once and he struck out on the 12th.
- 3:32:08Jim Catfish on her still on, still working as an extra innings.
- 3:32:11The pitchers no longer have to go just to three innings.
- 3:32:14Right one to Perez, a breaking ball on the inside corner.
- 3:32:19During the regulation nine, a pitcher can go no more than three innings.
- 3:32:22Once the regulation nine is gone, they run out of pitchers.
- 3:32:25There's a long drive to left field off about Perez.
- 3:32:27That goes to Krebski looking up, home run.
- 3:32:38National lead, lead two to one in the 15th.
- 3:32:46Perez hit the ball very well.
- 3:32:48It's carried on a line drive just over the 375 foot sign in left center field.
- 3:32:53This ball very well in this Krebski cannot get back to the wall at all.
- 3:32:58That will not go into the regular season books, only into the all-star records, but that's the 18th home run.
- 3:33:04That Perez is hit in championship competition this year.
- 3:33:0717, there's another drive.
- 3:33:09This time by Macarver, picked up in right field by Conigliara and holds into a single.
- 3:33:14And Macarver has been wheeling a hot pass.
- 3:33:26And now Tommy Helms, who was out once before, only to be called back.
- 3:33:31He'll come up to back for Don Garza.
- 3:33:36National lead, well it's all been home run.
- 3:33:38Richie Alamez-Wong and Tony Perez in this the 15th inning.
- 3:33:41Bert Robinson is home run for the American League and that's it, two to one in the 15th.
- 3:33:46The National League now with one out in the 15th would like to have a run in the 15th.
- 3:33:54He runs nine hits to the National, one eight and oh for the American.
- 3:33:58Sykes from Jim Katfish on it.
- 3:34:01And when the National League takes the field, it'll be Tom Seaver of the Mets coming into the ballgame.
- 3:34:06And the only pitcher that manager Waldole has left, Sykes and Denny Lamaster, who as we mentioned before is injured.
- 3:34:14Like one pitch to Helms and this one is a little high and it's one and one.
- 3:34:20Joel Harlan is now up for the American League, he's beginning to throw so should a rally get going here we could see Joel.
- 3:34:29More of the hits in one run have come off 100 for the National League.
- 3:34:34McArthur first, Helms the batter, line drive right to McCollough who trots over and throws it to Killibrew but a double play as McArthur was off and running.
- 3:34:46And it stunned McCrudden, McCard was off because the ball was not that sharply hit.
- 3:34:50One run on the home run by Perez, two hits, no errors and none left.
- 3:34:54In the middle of the 15th, the National League two, the American League one.
- 3:34:58I heard a man say to me and it kind of threw me off completely where this is a four-ply tire and then another one will tell you this is a full four-ply tire and I don't know still what.
- 3:35:08That's George Medwar of Boston.
- 3:35:10He was telling us about his experience buying tires.
- 3:35:13I go, I look for a tire, if a fellow tells me it's a good tire, they never ask me what kind of driving I do, where I drive, how I drive.
- 3:35:20We told Mr. Medwar, come to BF Goodrich, we ask you all those questions with our tire calculator and the calculator will tell you which BF Goodrich tire suits you best and cost you least.
- 3:35:32What did he think of our tire calculator?
- 3:35:34He has some good idea more realistically how to choose a tire.
- 3:35:38That would be very helpful.
- 3:35:39Very helpful. The tire calculator. Try it next time at BF Goodrich, the Straight Talk tire people.
- 3:35:45Help yourself to a tire calculator and some Straight Talk at any BF Goodrich store or dealer.
- 3:35:52The one nearest to you is listed in your yellow pages.
- 3:35:54Now coming into pitch and what a thrill this must be for him and what moments of nervousness he must be feeling.
- 3:36:00Tom Seaver of the New York Mets.
- 3:36:02Seaver, last time out, Saturday, went to full line innings to beat Atlanta.
- 3:36:078-5 on the air with a 2.65 earned on average, 14 home runs. That has been the mainstay of the Mets staff and has pitched 10 complete ball games.
- 3:36:17He will face Conigliaro who is back when Aliba was thrown out of tempting distill.
- 3:36:22There's Fromsky and Bill Freehand.
- 3:36:25From the New York Mets.
- 3:36:27And out with the Tom Seaver, a right hander is coming in the fifth.
- 3:36:35Seaver warming up is Conigliaro standing by.
- 3:36:38Tony has struck out twice.
- 3:36:40That's why they're right twice and has fouled out once.
- 3:36:44The National League, well, a lot of workers, there have been 29 strikeouts.
- 3:36:47The 15 innings makes it the longest all-star game in history and no team has ever won more than four all-star games in a row.
- 3:36:55The National League has won four and right now could be the team that wins five in a row.
- 3:37:01Should they win right here?
- 3:37:03Of course, there's still a happening to go against the young rookie Tom Seaver.
- 3:37:14Seaver, Tony Kubeck, when we saw him, he beat Atlanta last Saturday, but a couple of weeks ago we saw him against Atlanta.
- 3:37:20And against a good power hitting team he was immensely affected.
- 3:37:24Right, Jim, we were talking, Buddy Blatner and I, about Jim McLaughlin.
- 3:37:28And I would compare Tom Seaver to McLaughlin and that he has a tremendous amount of toys for youngsters.
- 3:37:33He's not afraid to get ahead of the hitters, to challenge these big hitters and throw that ball across the plate.
- 3:37:37He's got a lot of ability, a good heart, a pretty good fastball.
- 3:37:42All right, the American League drilling by one, bottom of the 15th in danger of losing their fifth in a row to the National League.
- 3:37:49The National League wins, they'll have a 20-17 edge, they will have won 17 of the last 22.
- 3:37:55With that in mind, Conigliaro, Yosemstraski and Prihan are due up in the bottom of the 15th.
- 3:38:00And here's Tom Seaver's first pitch, the fastball which is catching Conigliaro after the East with Strike One.
- 3:38:07Jim, we inadvertently forgot that Claude Osteen, a left-hander from the Dodgers, is with the National League All-Star team and he begins to warm up now.
- 3:38:16Another low-fastball from Seaver, but this one is too low and it's one-and-one.
- 3:38:28The crowd very quiet as Seaver winds and throws on the outside, it's two-and-one now.
- 3:38:34Conigliaro has one thing in mind, get on base, he represents the tying run.
- 3:38:43The crowd is still here, 46,000, nearly there's a ball popped up foul, it'll be out of play and back into play.
- 3:38:5022.
- 3:38:54Conigliaro is another player that gets hit quite often by pitch balls, he's had fractures in the arm and everything else from being hit.
- 3:39:01And he keeps that left front foot of his, very close to home plate and his left elbow is in the strike zone.
- 3:39:06So these pitchers made so a ball it is close to being a strike and it could hit him.
- 3:39:11Here's a 2-2 pitch from Seaver, it is low 3-and-2.
- 3:39:14Tony, you're speaking of being hit, John Wyatt.
- 3:39:17Conigliaro earlier this spring and Tony suffered a hairline fracture of the shoulder, but his back is doing very well.
- 3:39:24With 13-0 runs and 46 RBIs on the air.
- 3:39:273-and-2 pitch from Seaver, ground ball foul, almost made it into the American League All-Star dugout,
- 3:39:34picked up by third base coach Bill Rickley, still 3-and-2.
- 3:39:41There has only been one loss and this is not the time for a pitcher to walk a player.
- 3:39:46Due to one, National League lasted the 15th, Conigliaro the lead off batter, 3-and-2, the pitch,
- 3:39:51hit high in the air, overcomes Aaron in left field, bays in center, it is Hank Aaron in short left field, who has it for the first time.
- 3:40:02The first time begins to run out on the American League as Carl Diastemski comes into bat.
- 3:40:07Carl has been the hottest hitter in this game, in that after striking out on the second inning, he doubled in the fifth,
- 3:40:15singled in the seventh through the game's only walk in the tenth and singled again in the twelfth.
- 3:40:24Officially he is 3-for-4. Seaver throws outside Conig, right one.
- 3:40:33Now some of the fans, very few, feeling that perhaps this game could be over, are beginning to make their way out.
- 3:40:44Bottom of the 15th, Seaver throws inside Diastemski, out of this one-and-one.
- 3:40:55Here at Anaheim, where strictly at American League City, they are getting the fight songs out for the American League with trails 2-to-1.
- 3:41:02That's all, misses outside, it is 2-and-1 and as you said, Tony Kubek, Seaver is not afraid to get ahead of the batter,
- 3:41:08he was ahead, he was behind to Conig Vierro and got him on a short flight to left heel.
- 3:41:14He has the rare ability for a young pitcher to get his breaking ball over the hard slider that he has almost anytime he wants to.
- 3:41:19So he has confidence.
- 3:41:20Low and now he is 3-to-1 on Diastemski.
- 3:41:27Let's see now if Seaver will go with his best pitch on 3-and-1, which is the slider.
- 3:41:32Olstein is warming up, should he be needed, worked as recently as Sunday and went 9-and-2-3 innings on Sunday, so should he come in,
- 3:41:39he'd be coming in with just one day's rest.
- 3:41:43He won the score and the last of the 15th, Seaver throws outside and low, and there is the second walk-in ball game with Stemski.
- 3:41:49The possession of Tyron takes the base.
- 3:41:573-and is in the batter's box now, but Ken Berry has come into the arms-extra goal and we could get him as a pinch hitter.
- 3:42:08Berry, a last minute replacement when Frank Robertson took himself out of the all-star game last Friday night.
- 3:42:13Bill 3-and-a-day has struck out, popped out, struck out again, sacrificed and reached on the fourth play.
- 3:42:203-and with a lot of power won down 15th innings, throw and 3-and took a mighty cut strike one.
- 3:42:27Stemski's on first, nationally out on front fire run.
- 3:42:36Seaver, as did Don Drysdale the inning before taking his time, realizing the import of the situation.
- 3:42:45Low, and it's one-and-one.
- 3:42:50A catfish hunter stands to be the loser, and of course, Drysdale stands to be the winner, having been in there when the home run was hit by a threat.
- 3:42:59Bill 3-and at the play-chip is not particularly fast. He does hit a lot of ground balls hard, so with Seaver on the mound, a good stage of our low ball pitch, we have a double-play possibility.
- 3:43:10Here's the 1-1 pitch, like two. 3-and-take-y.
- 3:43:17It is 1-and-2.
- 3:43:24And now for the first time in this game, the tension begins to build.
- 3:43:29Because the runs of all-score on homers, sudden swiftness, there's a ball, lying in the center field, what he mays, comes in a step or two and has it for the second half.
- 3:43:39Bill hit the ball very well, hit it almost directly at Mays. Hardly had to move, but he hit the ball very well.
- 3:43:46Now Ken Berry, and Ken, a last-minute replacement, as we said, for Frank Robinson, represents the last chance for the American League.
- 3:43:54There are two down here in the 50s. Ken Berry has 4 home runs, 26 RBI's, and head off to a great start.
- 3:44:00But as of last weekend, it was all for 26.
- 3:44:05Jim, we can't mention enough times how flawlessly both of these ball clubs have played. No errors by either team.
- 3:44:19They've executed all the little things, the sacrifices, the force outs, all the little things that make true superstars and true all-stars.
- 3:44:26One strike to Bering.
- 3:44:31Bistremski still at first base, with two down in the last of the 15.
- 3:44:37National League leading by one. Berry takes outside from Tom Siever, a rookie pitcher from the Mets who's trying to save the game for the National League, and Don drives there.
- 3:44:49One-on-one to come. Berry, a right-handed batter.
- 3:44:55Siever ready and throws, and he threw this one right-five, Berry, who's long and missed. One and two.
- 3:45:11And now with a one-two count to Ken Berry, the crowd edges forward a little bit more. He throws outside and loads. Two-two to Ken Berry.
- 3:45:23Well, this has been the longest game in all-star history, and it's been one of the most exciting.
- 3:45:28And all of the scoring has come on home runs with dramatic swiftness. There have been no real rallies as such.
- 3:45:35Two-two. Swing and a miss, strike three. The 30th strikeout of this all-star game that has gone 15 innings, retires Ken Berry, and the American League, the National League, wins it by the score of two to one.
- 3:45:50And now we're going to talk about another kind of excitement. It's something youthful and lively, and it has a great shape. What is it? The 67 Dodge Dark.
- 3:45:57This is a big compact. Big on luxury and comfort with foam padded seats and full carpeting. The dark model line-up is big also.
- 3:46:04There are two-door hard tops, two and four-door sedans, and of course, a fun way of getting out on the sun, the ever-popular Dodge Dark Convertible.
- 3:46:11And speaking of excitement, have you seen the new Dark PT hard top? It comes with the things you expect this sports car to have, like bucket seats, center console, and a choice of spirit of engine.
- 3:46:20Up to the optional four-barrel, 273 cubic inch V8. Pick a dark, any dark. It's the quickest way out of the dull driving rush.
- 3:46:28Dark looks like fun, and it is. And price? Well, that's the thing small about Dodge Dark. See you soon at your Dodge News. The good guys and the light hats.
- 3:46:36Well, money-blattner. This is the first All-Star game in Edelheim, but a lot of things are going into the record books, and some have been one of the greats.
- 3:46:45Jim, this won't be long remembered. Again, we say the name of the game is pitching. That was on display here this afternoon, an early evening, magnificent pitching by both ball clubs.
- 3:46:56And of course, as Tony mentioned, an airless ball game through 15 innings, the longest All-Star game on record.
- 3:47:02I think the unusual twist is that three runs were scored in the ball game. All three were home runs, and all three were hit by third baseman Richie Allen, Tony Perez, and then Brooks Robinson.
- 3:47:14And for 25-year-olds, Tony Perez, I know he'll long remember this one because the rather strange thing last year, he hit, let's see, but four home runs all of last year.
- 3:47:25He had 17 home runs now at the All-Star break, and that's what he puts in the Trophy row. A great ball game all the way around, and the 46,000 I know thoroughly enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed, bringing it right on down the line to everyone in the country.
- 3:47:38Thank you, buddy-blattner, the words of the California Angels, and a big thanks to you for working with us. Tony Kuback has an X player. How did you see this 38-year-old star game?
- 3:47:46Jim, I saw Eddie Stanky of the White Sox coaching down at first base this entire ball game, and Eddie, of course, speaks about the intangibles in baseball, the little things, the fundamentals that most big league players perform and do, and that's what we saw today.
- 3:47:59A good fundamental ball game, no errors, great pitching, the whole run when it was needed, great play under pressure, and it was pressure all the way in this tight ball game.
- 3:48:07So Eddie Stanky is sure proud of his ball club, the American League, even though they did lose it.
- 3:48:11Thank you also, Tony. The National League, which is one of its fifth in the row, which is a brand new record, 15 innings, a brand new record, 30 strikeouts, a brand new record.
- 3:48:19Drivesdale-Lewinner, two runs, both on homers, by Richie Allen and Tony Perez, nine hits, no errors. The American League, a home run by Brooks Robinson, eight hits, no errors.
- 3:48:28Hunter the loser, Drivesdale-Lewinner, our engineer for NBC has been John Pollock. Our NBC producer has been Hal Ashby.
- 3:48:36Two runs, nine hits, no errors for the National League, one run, eight hits, no errors for the American, Jim Simpson with Tony Kubeck and Buddy Blatner, and that wraps up the 1967 All-Star Baseball game.
- 3:48:45Be with us again for the first game of the 1967 World Series.
- 3:48:49When your host says today, again, will be Chrysler Corporation, makers of Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, Imperial and Dodge trucks, by Gillette, heads up, hair groom.
- 3:48:58It grooms your hair with a clean look of water, by Camel Cigarettes, regular in-pilots, Abarille Smoke, Abar Camels, and by B.F. Goodrich, the straight-talk tire people.
- 3:49:09The final score once again in the 38th All-Star game in 15ings, the National League 2, the American League 1. This has been an NBC Radio Network production.
