Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The rex was not chasing the jeep.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You love sandwiches. Huh, let's go to uh eighty. It
- 0:14Speaker 1: was bo wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a
- 0:18Speaker 1: crush on Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game. You're listening to Stu Gottson Company.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It is te Gottson Company, presented by FanDuel and the FanDuel.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Sportsbook is he is out sick today, sick of the Knicks.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Dusty Baker is going to join us. What a special
- 0:40Speaker 2: day today, guys. Mike Golic Senior is co hosting the
- 0:45Speaker 2: radio show. I am not certain one of the last
- 0:47Speaker 2: time it is that Mike Golick Senior did live radio,
- 0:51Speaker 2: but he's doing it today, Fellas.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I mean, this is a big deal.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Gol frigget in a Hall of Famer, like rolling one
- 0:58Speaker 4: out of the bullpen.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I'm very excited to have him. Taylor has been sending
- 1:06Speaker 2: me text about the Emmys. We'll get to that in
- 1:08Speaker 2: a second. Also Awful Announcing, what an awful announcing announce
- 1:13Speaker 2: Taylor in terms of top young broadcasters.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Thank you. It's a tough, tough sentence.
- 1:19Speaker 3: So Awful Announcing posted a list of sports media rising
- 1:24Speaker 3: stars of twenty twenty six. I see it. I see
- 1:27Speaker 3: it on Twitter, and I'm like, you know what I've had,
- 1:30Speaker 3: I've had a good past three relations.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Oh whoa wha wha wha wa top stop for a second.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So you saw this list, and you were approaching this
- 1:39Speaker 2: list and opening the link to this list thinking there's
- 1:43Speaker 2: a chance that Taylor Vippalis might be on the list.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Is that what you're saying, not.
- 1:48Speaker 3: That there was a chance that I'd be on the list,
- 1:50Speaker 3: but outside looking in, maybe maybe I get an honorable
- 1:52Speaker 3: mention at the very least.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Right and mikey a were you think of the same
- 1:57Speaker 1: thing or you're giving.
- 2:00Speaker 5: First off, I am no rising I am a falling star.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Right when you land here, you become a falling star.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Put it on the pole. Taylor, H Taylor, what happened?
- 2:13Speaker 2: You started scrolling through the list, you went to the ollies,
- 2:16Speaker 2: you did see your name, and then you thought, maybe,
- 2:18Speaker 2: just for a second, perhaps, Man, surprise, I'm gonna be
- 2:21Speaker 2: in the top ten here, Like what happened to you?
- 2:23Speaker 1: Take us through it?
- 2:24Speaker 3: So very early my hopes were dashed because the first
- 2:29Speaker 3: name Gilbert Arenas, and I'm like, oh no, that is
- 2:33Speaker 3: way too big of a name.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Agent zero. I mean, how was he rising? Gilbert Arenas
- 2:41Speaker 1: has been doing this for years, man.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, but they're they're giving underdog and what he's done
- 2:47Speaker 3: for Gil's arena and they have over a million subscribers.
- 2:51Speaker 3: The second name on the list, yeah, somebody that I've
- 2:53Speaker 3: talked about, Kenny Beacham. You have he took Frank I
- 2:57Speaker 3: saw his hour if you remember, Oh.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Jesus Christ, that guy, and now he's on this list.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Frank I Sola can't complain he's not rising. I mean
- 3:04Speaker 2: he's my age older.
- 3:07Speaker 3: So Kenny Beacham gets on the list. And now I'm
- 3:09Speaker 3: looking at this list.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Do you think I Sola goes to sleep at night
- 3:12Speaker 2: just just thinking bad thoughts about things he wants to
- 3:15Speaker 2: do to Kenny Beacham. And for those of you who
- 3:17Speaker 2: don't know, I Sola had to record a promo for
- 3:19Speaker 2: NBA Radio in Serious x and which promoted less of
- 3:23Speaker 2: Frank and more.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Of Beacham and it met your day was going to
- 3:26Speaker 1: get better.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yeah, the exact phrasing. That was the exact phrasing. Monday's
- 3:30Speaker 3: just got a whole lot better because the Kenny Beacham
- 3:33Speaker 3: hour is here and one less, one less hour of
- 3:36Speaker 3: Frank I Sola.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yes, I mean Beacham taking all of my Sola stuff, Jesus.
- 3:42Speaker 3: So then I get further down the list. Friend of
- 3:44Speaker 3: the show, t Bob Abear on the list graduation. Yes, yes,
- 3:51Speaker 3: so since I'm not on the list because t Bob's
- 3:54Speaker 3: on the list, because Charlotte Wilder, another friend of the
- 3:57Speaker 3: show is on the list, I'm claiming that as a
- 4:00Speaker 3: win for me. Wait what, I'm claiming it as a
- 4:04Speaker 3: win for us? How just loose connections to this show?
- 4:08Speaker 3: And now I printed out this article. Let me see
- 4:10Speaker 3: who wrote this article. I printed out this article written
- 4:13Speaker 3: by Matt Yoder, and I'm just gonna tap it every
- 4:15Speaker 3: time I leave my room, just so I could give
- 4:17Speaker 3: myself something aimed for for twenty twenty seven.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Mikey, you know what, I'm with Taylor on this and
- 4:24Speaker 2: I want Yoda on the show. And I want to
- 4:26Speaker 2: know why Taylor didn't make the list. I believe that
- 4:28Speaker 2: I've made this list at some point way back when,
- 4:32Speaker 2: back when I was at ESPN.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I could be wrong. I might have been the broadcaster
- 4:35Speaker 1: of the Year.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I have no idea, but I'm pretty certain I made
- 4:38Speaker 2: a list on awful announcing hopefully a good list. I
- 4:42Speaker 2: am with Taylor on this, Mikey. He is deserving. He
- 4:45Speaker 2: is a young rising star in our industry.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I mean, this is the guy.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Who who has authored five Jalen Brunson songs, five not four,
- 4:59Speaker 2: not three, not two, not one, but five Jalen Brunston songs,
- 5:04Speaker 2: all them a hit. We are approaching a point where
- 5:07Speaker 2: Taylor is going to release an album.
- 5:08Speaker 4: I mean, listen, nobody loves Taylor like I do. Okay,
- 5:13Speaker 4: Taylor is awesome. But when you come when you text
- 5:17Speaker 4: Yoda and you say why wasn't Taylor on the list,
- 5:20Speaker 4: He's gonna say who?
- 5:24Speaker 1: All right, well, who's Yoda? I mean, Jesus so Stu.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I'm aiming a little lower right now because I'm looking
- 5:33Speaker 3: at I'm looking at lists that I could try to
- 5:35Speaker 3: get on at this point.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Miami New Times every year they pick best sports radio Personality,
- 5:42Speaker 3: best Radio Newcomer, Best best newcomer. Basically, last year, Alex
- 5:49Speaker 3: Solana won Best Sports.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Congratulations to him for cro.
- 5:54Speaker 3: So he was the twenty twenty five Best Sports Radio Personality.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I've got my eyes on that, really.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I mean, but we don't do a show locally in Miami.
- 6:03Speaker 2: It's a national show on two hundred plus stations across
- 6:07Speaker 2: the country.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I mean, I'm hoping that there's a little leniency there
- 6:10Speaker 3: that just because I'm based in Miami, that they consider
- 6:13Speaker 3: me for the award.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Mikey, I think what we need to do is infiltrate
- 6:16Speaker 2: other markets, smaller markets, and try to get Taylor as
- 6:20Speaker 2: the radio personality of the year.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Have a that yeah, soue false.
- 6:26Speaker 3: They wanted to have a day for me there.
- 6:27Speaker 2: They invited me forever, key to the city, the whole
- 6:30Speaker 2: nine yards to False, private jet everything. Let's find an
- 6:36Speaker 2: affiliate that you're on Albuquerque, Alan Albuquerque, he calls into
- 6:41Speaker 2: the show often. Let's make you the AM personality.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Of the year.
- 6:45Speaker 2: It's what you aspired to, Taylor in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I'll take it. I'll take anything I could get at
- 6:52Speaker 3: this point.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Hardware is hardware, of course, you'll take it.
- 7:01Speaker 3: What else do you have? I want to be like
- 7:04Speaker 3: one of those pretentious people that puts their sports Emmys
- 7:06Speaker 3: behind them.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Get a fake one, Get one for me? What?
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure I could order one. Everybody and their
- 7:15Speaker 3: mother gets a sports Emmy nowadays.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I can't wait for all the people that have sports
- 7:20Speaker 4: Emmys and have them displayed and me to tell them
- 7:23Speaker 4: as they come on. Taylor thinks, your pretentious asshole, Bomani.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Me deserved deserve.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Wait, but Bomani deserves one.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Deserve of course, but he's calling the pretentious for having
- 7:40Speaker 4: it displayed on their zoom.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I mean, listen, Taylor, if you won the Heisman Trophy,
- 7:45Speaker 2: would you not have that thing prominently placed right behind
- 7:48Speaker 2: you on the zoom here?
- 7:49Speaker 1: Now?
- 7:50Speaker 3: Yeah, if I won the Heisman Trophy. But if my
- 7:53Speaker 3: slacker friend from college that I was in a production
- 7:57Speaker 3: class with just happens to sniff the out of NFL Live,
- 8:01Speaker 3: he gets a Sports Emmy for for barely contributing what
- 8:04Speaker 3: he typed a lower third one time on the show.
- 8:06Speaker 4: All right, one gotta go on your back wall there,
- 8:10Speaker 4: North Carolina helmet NBA Cup Sports Emmy.
- 8:14Speaker 1: That NBA Cup ain't going anywhere.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I tell you, I'm well aware, it's not that's.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I wouldn't even if the Sports Emmy even offered me
- 8:22Speaker 3: a Sports Emmy, depending on what it was. If it
- 8:24Speaker 3: was like Bomani or Mina and deserved, I would accept it.
- 8:27Speaker 3: If it was for just being a part of an
- 8:30Speaker 3: unsolved right, yeah, yeah, keep keep your Sports.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Emmy, Newcomer of the Year Sports Emmy.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I would display that.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but take down the Carolina helmet. You have to
- 8:42Speaker 1: take down the cup.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I mean I would take down the Carolina helmet until
- 8:46Speaker 3: Bill Belichick could get the team over five hundred. The
- 8:49Speaker 3: Sports Emmy, by the way, they had it last night,
- 8:52Speaker 3: the forty seventh Annual Sports Emmy. Yeah, hosted during the
- 8:56Speaker 3: NBA in the NHL Conference Finals, like a pretty busy
- 8:59Speaker 3: night in the words calendar for everybody to take off,
- 9:02Speaker 3: get over yourself, guys.
- 9:04Speaker 4: That's what July is for the Sports Emmys.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yes, right, that and Joey Chestnutt that's not the last
- 9:10Speaker 2: week of May.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Nick Wright looked like an understudy for Lin Manuel mirandap
- 9:14Speaker 3: In Hamilton presenting an award.
- 9:16Speaker 1: What but you love Nick right? Right?
- 9:18Speaker 6: I love Nick right?
- 9:19Speaker 1: She's a mentor. Yes, Nick Wright won an Emmy.
- 9:26Speaker 3: No, so he lost the two Emmys he was up for,
- 9:30Speaker 3: I believe, But in between his two losses, they had
- 9:33Speaker 3: him go up and present an award.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Oh really, how do I get an invite? I mean,
- 9:37Speaker 2: this is insulting. I've been doing this for twenty years
- 9:39Speaker 2: at a Hall of Fame fucking level. Someone call the
- 9:41Speaker 2: Emmys and tell him I want an invite. I want
- 9:42Speaker 2: to be a presenter next year. I did Newcomer of
- 9:45Speaker 2: the Year in Albuquerque.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Taylor, you need to do these things for me. This
- 9:55Speaker 1: would be great. You need to get me into the
- 9:57Speaker 1: Emmys next year. Okay, just figure out a way to get.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Us there, all right, all right, I'll try.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I was asked to speak at one of these sports
- 10:04Speaker 2: radio media summits. Jason Barrett has him every years. He
- 10:09Speaker 2: gets it, he understands. Let's do this in July. I
- 10:13Speaker 2: believe Boomer Hall of Famer Boomer Asiasin will be there.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I believe Gianati's going to be there. I believe Craig
- 10:19Speaker 2: Carton will be there. They're all going to be speaking,
- 10:21Speaker 2: Colin Cowhort and others. I was offered and invited an
- 10:24Speaker 2: opportunity to do this.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Do you guys think I should do it? Because I
- 10:27Speaker 1: haven't responded yet. I'll respond this way.
- 10:31Speaker 4: I don't think you should do it because you're not
- 10:34Speaker 4: going to show up and then they're going to get
- 10:35Speaker 4: a panel of me and Taylor.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it is dangerously close to Lake Tahoe. I gotta
- 10:40Speaker 2: be honest, and lord knows, I ain't missing that.
- 10:46Speaker 3: You need like a three week buffer between you and
- 10:48Speaker 3: any potential trips.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yes, but take all the trips. Put all that aside.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Is that something you guys would like me to show
- 10:56Speaker 2: up to because they're claiming, you know, it's a big
- 10:59Speaker 2: deal to be invited to this thing. It's like a
- 11:01Speaker 2: who's who of sports radio hooks. I don't know what
- 11:03Speaker 2: it is a big deal. Yeah, it is a big deal.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I know. I mean, Taylor, it's a big deal. It is.
- 11:08Speaker 3: I'll take your word for it.
- 11:09Speaker 2: You want to come with me? Don't you become Newcomer
- 11:14Speaker 2: of the year. You get your face. He doesn't want
- 11:16Speaker 2: to go. He doesn't want to do any of the work.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I love you. I am so fucking proud of you.
- 11:21Speaker 2: He doesn't want to do any of the work. Make
- 11:22Speaker 2: any sort of trip. Go to this uh, go to
- 11:25Speaker 2: this sports radio summit where you know people will start
- 11:29Speaker 2: to recognize Taylor, see his face, hear his voice.
- 11:32Speaker 1: You know he's he's in He's in the industry.
- 11:35Speaker 2: This is how you advance to get a nomination for
- 11:38Speaker 2: a Sports Emmy.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Eventually. These are things you don't want.
- 11:41Speaker 2: You're not willing to do any of these things in
- 11:43Speaker 2: order to advance your career.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Gotta shake some hands, kiss some babies.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been doing it for twenty years. You want
- 11:49Speaker 1: to do it with me. I'm tired. I'm tired of
- 11:51Speaker 1: shaking hands.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I mean, I'll consider it.
- 11:55Speaker 2: That's very nice of you. Dusty Baker. Huh, yes, Dusty Baker.

- 14:10Speaker 2: Tell us about what you're doing with Merch's new program
- 14:13Speaker 2: with the MLB playing with Heart.
- 14:15Speaker 6: Well, what I'm doing is trying to make people aware
- 14:19Speaker 6: of going to the doctor, you know, be more aware
- 14:22Speaker 6: of your good cholesterol and your band cholesterol and you
- 14:26Speaker 6: know what to do about it, and you know, try
- 14:28Speaker 6: to try to avoid people in the future, you know,
- 14:33Speaker 6: happened to them what happened to me because I had
- 14:35Speaker 6: a stroke a few years ago, and so it really
- 14:38Speaker 6: made me aware and conscious of taking better care of
- 14:41Speaker 6: myself and eating better and like I said, going to
- 14:44Speaker 6: the doctor and just being aware.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Dusty, had you gotten to the doctor earlier, is that
- 14:49Speaker 2: what you're saying that that stroke could have been prevented.
- 14:52Speaker 6: Possibly? Yeah, I mean possibly, and I mean you never know.
- 14:57Speaker 6: But I was very very fortunate actually to have a
- 15:02Speaker 6: stroke while I was in the hospital and I was
- 15:05Speaker 6: in Chicago. I was having heart failure and I didn't
- 15:08Speaker 6: know it. I couldn't breathe walking up the steps of
- 15:11Speaker 6: Wrigley Field, and the player behind me said, hey, man,
- 15:15Speaker 6: what's wrong, Bacon. So they called over the doctor took
- 15:17Speaker 6: me to the hospital, Northwestern Hospital. Then I stayed there
- 15:23Speaker 6: a couple of days, and then I had my stroke
- 15:26Speaker 6: on the way out because the lady asked me, she said,
- 15:29Speaker 6: what's your name? And I said, ma'am, I'm tired of
- 15:31Speaker 6: you asking me what my name is.
- 15:33Speaker 7: And I said, what's your name, sir?
- 15:35Speaker 6: I said the deepa dot And she says, what's your name?
- 15:38Speaker 6: And I said the dada? Because I was just about
- 15:40Speaker 6: to get released from the hospital. She says, oh, no,
- 15:44Speaker 6: you're having a stroke. She said, take your clothes off.
- 15:47Speaker 6: They put me on a gurney, rose me next door.
- 15:50Speaker 6: And ever since then, I've been very very aware of
- 15:54Speaker 6: my health and to realize how fortunate I was to
- 15:58Speaker 6: be in the hospital. You don't want to have my stroke.
- 16:02Speaker 2: We'll talk about that again on the way out. Dusty,
- 16:05Speaker 2: what you're doing with merk and that's a that's that's a.
- 16:08Speaker 6: Crazy some big old hands. I thought I had some big.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Hands, Dusty, I got listen. I have to be honest
- 16:14Speaker 1: with you.
- 16:14Speaker 2: No one in the history of my life has ever
- 16:16Speaker 2: looked at me and said, Taylor, am I wrong?
- 16:18Speaker 1: Mikey and said, hey, Stu, you have big hands.
- 16:21Speaker 3: They're all the same size, too, Dusty. All his fingers, all.
- 16:24Speaker 1: The fingers are the same size.
- 16:28Speaker 6: That's why he looks so big.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I promise you they're not Dusty tiny. I wish they
- 16:36Speaker 1: were biggery.
- 16:40Speaker 2: This is such a yeah, this is such a thrill
- 16:42Speaker 2: for us. You know, you were commenting on Taylor's haircut.
- 16:46Speaker 2: You got a nice trim, and you asked, uh, well,
- 16:49Speaker 2: I'm gonna give you the reason as to why he
- 16:50Speaker 2: got his haircut.
- 16:51Speaker 1: You tell me if you think it's a reason that
- 16:54Speaker 1: is deserving.
- 16:54Speaker 2: He got his haircut, and he looks so nice for
- 16:57Speaker 2: you today, not for you, Dusty, because the Knicks made
- 16:59Speaker 2: it to the NBA Finals and he's been waiting for
- 17:01Speaker 2: it his entire life.
- 17:02Speaker 6: How about that, hey man, I was pulling for the
- 17:04Speaker 6: Knicks too, wow. I mean as much as I like Cleveland,
- 17:08Speaker 6: I like their players and everything, but I I was
- 17:12Speaker 6: pulling for the Necks because Mike Brown, you know, came
- 17:15Speaker 6: from Sacramento, and these from Sacramento, so uh yeah, I
- 17:19Speaker 6: was pulling for him. I'm pulling for the Knicks.
- 17:22Speaker 3: What a huge endorsement for the Knicks that Dusty Baker's
- 17:24Speaker 3: on her side. Because Dusty, when I think of you,
- 17:27Speaker 3: I think of toothpicks and how cool you looked with
- 17:30Speaker 3: a toothpick in your mouth. What is it about the
- 17:33Speaker 3: toothpick that makes you look so cool with it?
- 17:36Speaker 6: I don't know. Maybe I learned from my dad. See
- 17:38Speaker 6: my dad always had toothpick. If you want the toothpick,
- 17:41Speaker 6: ask mister Baker. And the reason I started uh toothpicks
- 17:45Speaker 6: is because I was dipping tobacco and my wife hated it.
- 17:48Speaker 6: My daughter hated it, and my mom hated it, and
- 17:51Speaker 6: so and my Dennis hated it. And my Dinnis said, Dusty,
- 17:54Speaker 6: you got to try these Australian uh tea tree chewing
- 17:58Speaker 6: sticks instead of up in tobacco. And so that's what
- 18:02Speaker 6: I started doing during the game to try to stop
- 18:05Speaker 6: chewing the back up. But the only thing is the
- 18:07Speaker 6: bases loaded two outs bottom of the ninth and then
- 18:10Speaker 6: I'd have to have a dip and toothpicks at the same.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Time because you were so nervous and stressed.
- 18:16Speaker 6: Right, yeah, I was trying to be cool, yeah, but
- 18:18Speaker 6: I was nervous.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, but you look cool in that. There have
- 18:21Speaker 2: to be a point in time where Dusty Baker looked
- 18:23Speaker 2: in the mirror and said, you know what, I rocked
- 18:25Speaker 2: a toothpick?
- 18:26Speaker 1: Well, right, I.
- 18:27Speaker 6: Don't know hein. The only thing is, man, it puts
- 18:29Speaker 6: the pressure on me with the moms because the big
- 18:32Speaker 6: I'm playing, because their kids try to try to turl
- 18:35Speaker 6: a toothpick.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yeah, but you're not smoking cigarettes in front of them, Dusty.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Just a toothpick, right.
- 18:40Speaker 7: But the one side is blunt. See, people, I'm not
- 18:44Speaker 7: a fool.
- 18:44Speaker 6: People like, man, don't you poke yourself all in the
- 18:46Speaker 6: mouth with toothpicks? I'm like, nah, man, it's one size blood.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Right When I say toothpicks and baseball, beside yourself, who
- 18:53Speaker 2: do you think of?
- 18:54Speaker 1: I think of one guy. I'm wondering if you think
- 18:56Speaker 1: of the same guy. Uh.
- 18:58Speaker 6: I think of two guys, you know, Washington, Yes, yep.
- 19:01Speaker 6: And I think of Jimmy Wynn.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Oh wow, I didn't realize Jimmy rock the toothpick.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Yeah, Oh yeah, he was cool with the toothpick on.
- 19:10Speaker 6: He'd only have a little bit sticking out that was
- 19:13Speaker 6: at him.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Yes, it became a fashion statement of sorts for you.
- 19:16Speaker 6: No, well, I guess man, I don't.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Know, Dusty.
- 19:22Speaker 2: You have been a big part of so many big
- 19:25Speaker 2: moments in Major League Baseball history, and I am wondering,
- 19:29Speaker 2: can you kind of just put us there. I don't
- 19:31Speaker 2: know if the guys know this, but Dusty was on
- 19:34Speaker 2: deck when Hank Aaron hit his seven hundred and fifteenth
- 19:37Speaker 2: career home run. Can you kind of walk us through that, Dusty,
- 19:40Speaker 2: Like what was going on in your mind that that
- 19:42Speaker 2: was going down?
- 19:43Speaker 6: Well, Actually, Hank came up to me and he goes, hey, man,
- 19:45Speaker 6: I'm gonna get this over with right now.
- 19:47Speaker 1: What.
- 19:48Speaker 6: Yeah, And he says he I'm tired of this And
- 19:51Speaker 6: because it was tough on him, I mean that whole
- 19:55Speaker 6: you know, Chase of Babe and you know, the death threads,
- 19:59Speaker 6: the letters, all kind of things. Everybody was pulling at
- 20:01Speaker 6: him from all different sides, all over the country, and
- 20:05Speaker 6: it was tiresome. And plus he was getting divorced. I mean,
- 20:08Speaker 6: this was a tough tough time for him.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Wow.
- 20:11Speaker 6: And he told me. He said, hey, man, this is
- 20:13Speaker 6: it right here. I said, okay, Hank, and and he
- 20:16Speaker 6: hit it over the left of the wall. And I
- 20:18Speaker 6: didn't run up there initially because I excuse me.
- 20:22Speaker 7: I thought that this.
- 20:22Speaker 6: Is you know, Hank's movement. And you know, Hank was
- 20:26Speaker 6: the guy most responsible for me signing out of high school,
- 20:31Speaker 6: you know, with the Braves. He told my mother he'd
- 20:33Speaker 6: take care of me as if I was his son,
- 20:35Speaker 6: and he promised her that he'd make me go to
- 20:37Speaker 6: church and not hang out in the clubs and all
- 20:40Speaker 6: kinds of things. So you know, he kept his word,
- 20:43Speaker 6: you know, to my mom.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Wow, that's incorrect, goosebumps.
- 20:46Speaker 2: So Hank Aaron called his shot on the seven hundred
- 20:49Speaker 2: and fifteenth personally just the Dusty Baker.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Said, Hey, I am iding this right now. That's insane, Dusty.
- 20:55Speaker 7: Hey man, Hank.
- 20:57Speaker 6: I saw him that one spring turn that spring training,
- 21:00Speaker 6: I think he had eleven hits and spring training and
- 21:02Speaker 6: he had uh, I think he had ten home runs
- 21:05Speaker 6: or something like that, something ridiculous because he was working
- 21:08Speaker 6: working on hitting home runs.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Wow.
- 21:11Speaker 6: And I mean this guy, this guy was you know,
- 21:14Speaker 6: him and Bonds are the best two players that I've
- 21:16Speaker 6: been around.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Dusty, You're you're one of the better managers to ever
- 21:21Speaker 4: do it. And I'm wondering, if you're watching the landscape
- 21:24Speaker 4: right now in baseball, if I took the Dodgers and
- 21:26Speaker 4: maybe the Yankees away, which team do you would you
- 21:29Speaker 4: want to go start managing right now?
- 21:31Speaker 7: Right now? Oh boy, that's a good one.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Uh well we can, we can, we can cross out
- 21:38Speaker 2: the mats right well.
- 21:40Speaker 6: No, no, no, I mean if it was open, would
- 21:43Speaker 6: probably be And if I wanted to do it, because
- 21:45Speaker 6: I'm not.
- 21:46Speaker 7: Sure if I'll ever go back on the field. Probably
- 21:50Speaker 7: the Padres. Wow, Yeah, because they got.
- 21:53Speaker 6: They got good personnel and it's a heck of a town.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 21:58Speaker 2: And the look at him smiling, he's just he's just
- 22:01Speaker 2: thinking about seventy two degrees.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Not a cloud in the sky.
- 22:04Speaker 6: Everything exactly right. And you do have to worry about
- 22:06Speaker 6: rain now, So you have to worry about snow. You
- 22:08Speaker 6: to wear about cool, You have to worry about nothing
- 22:10Speaker 6: to just go play ball?
- 22:11Speaker 8: Yeah and go with you Yeah, well hold on and
- 22:14Speaker 8: go what and go to the beach, Just show up
- 22:21Speaker 8: to a baseball game.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Tony was going to say, Tijuana, Yeah, I've been there,
- 22:25Speaker 4: five thousands.
- 22:26Speaker 7: My uncle used to live in Tijuana.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I swear, Wait, what you lived in Tijuana?
- 22:31Speaker 6: My uncle he worked at the at the at the
- 22:35Speaker 6: base and he lives in Tijuana. And the Mexican lady
- 22:38Speaker 6: met Tia and so, uh, you know, she didn't have
- 22:42Speaker 6: a green card so at that time, so my uncle
- 22:44Speaker 6: had to live in uh in Tijuana. It was pretty cool.
- 22:47Speaker 6: We used to go visit him on weekends. That was
- 22:49Speaker 6: my mother's youngest brother.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Oh, that's awesome.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Duscie is somebody who's won three Manager of the Years
- 22:55Speaker 3: and you're seeing the way baseball is trending now, because
- 22:59Speaker 3: it kind of make your skin crawl when you see
- 23:01Speaker 3: some of these analytic people come in and try to
- 23:04Speaker 3: hand the manager's lineup cards where it's like I got this.
- 23:06Speaker 3: I I know how to put a lineup in, I
- 23:09Speaker 3: know when to go to the bullpen. But now you're
- 23:11Speaker 3: seeing more and more analytics in the game.
- 23:13Speaker 6: Well, you are seeing more and more and uh, you
- 23:16Speaker 6: know torn end of my manager your career, you know,
- 23:19Speaker 6: we saw it then too, and that's fun. I would
- 23:22Speaker 6: have some some discussions or or disagreements as far as
- 23:27Speaker 6: lineups and and just different things on the baseball field,
- 23:31Speaker 6: and you know, I was in lineups. I know how
- 23:35Speaker 6: to make up a lineup. I know what it takes
- 23:37Speaker 6: to win, to do a lineup, and uh, you know,
- 23:40Speaker 6: I just wish that some of the you know, people
- 23:43Speaker 6: upstairs were let some of the managers actually manage a
- 23:47Speaker 6: little more than they're letting them manage.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Now, Dusty, we're big, you know, we're down here in
- 23:52Speaker 2: South Florida, So the Florida Marlins or something that has
- 23:55Speaker 2: been big over my career, having won two World Series,
- 23:58Speaker 2: I've been I've wanted to ask you this for so
- 24:01Speaker 2: long because, again, as I stated earlier, you have been
- 24:04Speaker 2: at such a major part of so many big plays,
- 24:06Speaker 2: so many big moments in Major League Baseball history.
- 24:09Speaker 1: And you just told us about Hank Aaron.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Can you kind of walk us through what was going
- 24:13Speaker 2: through your mind with the Steve Bartman play back with
- 24:16Speaker 2: the marh Hoods and the Cubs, because I've always wanted
- 24:18Speaker 2: to ask you that it was such an amazing run
- 24:20Speaker 2: by the Marlins, and I felt so bad for Cubs
- 24:22Speaker 2: fans as it was going down.
- 24:24Speaker 7: I came didn't feel bad for me at that time.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I did know I felt terrible.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I felt terrible for everyone involved, including including Bartman.
- 24:32Speaker 1: By the way, I really.
- 24:33Speaker 7: Do your roof for Jack mcked.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Come on, man and listen.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I'm a Mets fan. I love Trader Jack.
- 24:38Speaker 4: I do.
- 24:38Speaker 7: But I.
- 24:40Speaker 6: Love Trader Jack too. But what was going through my
- 24:42Speaker 6: mind is that I really couldn't see the play.
- 24:44Speaker 7: Yeah, the play in Wigley.
- 24:46Speaker 6: When you're in the in the in the home dugout
- 24:50Speaker 6: on the third base side, you can only see about.
- 24:54Speaker 7: A quarter of the way down the wall.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Right, and uh, it was out of play and I and.
- 25:00Speaker 6: See it, and I didn't see the actual play until later.
- 25:04Speaker 6: But you know, we had an opportunity to win that game.
- 25:07Speaker 6: You know, we had opportunity to win that game offensively
- 25:09Speaker 6: and defensively. And I felt bad for Bartman to take
- 25:12Speaker 6: the truth because, you know, here's a guy that goes
- 25:14Speaker 6: to the.
- 25:14Speaker 7: Ballpark team man.
- 25:17Speaker 6: I mean, this is one of the biggest days of
- 25:20Speaker 6: his life, not known when he left the house that
- 25:22Speaker 6: he was going to be the scoring of Chicago for
- 25:24Speaker 6: the rest of his life and would probably leave town.
- 25:27Speaker 6: I mean, you know, I felt terrible for him, and
- 25:29Speaker 6: I wanted to really win the next year. And then.
- 25:34Speaker 7: During a ticker tape parade.
- 25:36Speaker 6: I had visions of heaving Bartman sitting next to me,
- 25:39Speaker 6: Oh wow, but you know it didn't happen. But like I.
- 25:44Speaker 7: Said, I just feel sorry for him.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Actually, we'll get you out of here, so do I.
- 25:48Speaker 2: We'll get you out here in just a second, and
- 25:50Speaker 2: we'll talk about Murk again one more time in the
- 25:52Speaker 2: way out here. Taylor is a big time Yankee fan,
- 25:56Speaker 2: both Taylor and mikey Ya, and he said earlier early
- 26:00Speaker 2: in the season that he would not trade Camp Schlittler
- 26:04Speaker 2: straight up for Paul Skeins. I will tell you that
- 26:07Speaker 2: CC Sabbathi agreed with Taylor on this ridiculous take, Dusty Baker.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Is this a good take or a bad take?
- 26:13Speaker 2: He would not trade He loves Cam, he's a Yankee product.
- 26:18Speaker 2: He wants to keep him a Yankee, and he doesn't
- 26:20Speaker 2: want to improve his team by getting Paul Skeens.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Is he right or wrong?
- 26:24Speaker 6: I don't know. I don't know if he's right or
- 26:26Speaker 6: wrong or not. But I trust Ceci. I've been knowing
- 26:29Speaker 6: since he's twelve years old. Jesus, I'm sorry, man. I
- 26:33Speaker 6: just trust Cec because he knows more about pitching than
- 26:36Speaker 6: I do.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Actually, and also he.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Knows more about about the subjects. I've seen probably Skeens
- 26:43Speaker 6: pitched twice on TV, and I've seen he say's name.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Slittler, Yeah, Schlittler. Yeah.
- 26:49Speaker 6: I've seen him pitch once early in the year. Right now,
- 26:53Speaker 6: I haven't really seen it. I mean, it takes time
- 26:55Speaker 6: before you make a true evaluation. You got to go
- 26:58Speaker 6: around the league at least once or twice to to
- 27:01Speaker 6: evaluate if a guy's you know, real or not. At
- 27:04Speaker 6: this point in time, I think Schemes has shown that
- 27:07Speaker 6: he's a little more real and uh, you know, Slip,
- 27:10Speaker 6: like he's had more time and opportunities.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Right, But you said I would see see right.
- 27:15Speaker 7: Come on, man, I.
- 27:18Speaker 6: Changed my mind.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I was trying.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Jusse you were you were the manager of this past
- 27:27Speaker 3: World Baseball Classic for Nicaragua, and I'm just wondering what
- 27:30Speaker 3: was your experience like with that and just the atmospheres
- 27:33Speaker 3: that kind of come that kind of came with those games.
- 27:35Speaker 7: It was awesome question, I'll tell you it was awesome.
- 27:37Speaker 6: And I went to Nicaragua last August to see if
- 27:41Speaker 6: I liked it or not with my wife, and the
- 27:44Speaker 6: people were were were so nice. I feel I didn't
- 27:47Speaker 6: feel any thread about anything at any time, and the
- 27:50Speaker 6: experience was awesome. Uh, I see. You know, the players
- 27:55Speaker 6: need a little more improvement, you know, to uh to uh,
- 28:00Speaker 6: you know, to play against a Dominican, to play against Venezuela.
- 28:07Speaker 7: You know, they need you know, a little instruction. But
- 28:10Speaker 7: they're close. I mean they're real close.
- 28:12Speaker 6: I mean the mood and the atmosphere in Miami was
- 28:15Speaker 6: off the chain because I played winter ball in Venezuela
- 28:18Speaker 6: and Mexico and Puerto Rico, and I know what it's like.
- 28:21Speaker 6: There's nothing like Latin American culture in baseball. I mean,
- 28:26Speaker 6: it's a big party. The whole thing was a party.
- 28:29Speaker 6: And you know, I'd do it again, you know, but
- 28:32Speaker 6: I don't know the next next time they have it,
- 28:34Speaker 6: I might be a little bit too old.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Last one, Dusty before we promote Mark again, Dodgers good
- 28:40Speaker 2: or bad for baseball?
- 28:42Speaker 1: Uh?
- 28:42Speaker 7: Well, right now, everybody want to ask that question?
- 28:45Speaker 6: Yeah, we'll see, we'll see come to this new basic
- 28:48Speaker 6: agreement if if the ownership and the players think it's
- 28:53Speaker 6: good or bad for baseball?
- 28:54Speaker 2: Yeah, Taylor wanted to ask, but he was scared to
- 28:57Speaker 2: ask a very traditional sports radio quiet. Should Barry Bonds
- 29:00Speaker 2: Hall of Famer. Yes, right, no brainer.
- 29:02Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I mean I think Barry's Hall of Famer,
- 29:05Speaker 6: and I also think McGuire and Sosa, and I also
- 29:08Speaker 6: think of Roger because how many guys when seven cy youngs.
- 29:13Speaker 6: I mean that's almost unheard of.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Yes, this is one of the many reasons I love you,
- 29:17Speaker 2: Dusty Baker. I mean, seriously, you are one of the
- 29:20Speaker 2: great men, one of the great baseball players, and you're
- 29:23Speaker 2: just listen, You're a guy. I just want to tell
- 29:25Speaker 2: you this. When people see Dusty Baker, they smile. You
- 29:28Speaker 2: have that impact and effect on people. You know that, right,
- 29:31Speaker 2: I think.
- 29:31Speaker 7: So I'm gonna try that tonight with my wife tonight.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Except for her, I could.
- 29:41Speaker 7: I make her smile to you.
- 29:43Speaker 2: I know you, cat, you are fantastic. We appreciate your time.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Tell us one more time on the way out. What
- 29:48Speaker 2: you're doing again with merk.
- 29:49Speaker 6: Well again, I'm trying to make everybody aware, you know,
- 29:53Speaker 6: take care of themselves, live longer, and go see the doctor.
- 29:57Speaker 6: That's the number one thing, because the early detection is
- 29:59Speaker 6: a key.
- 30:01Speaker 2: All right, Dusty, we appreciate it. This has been a
- 30:03Speaker 2: thrill for us. You are a legend, sir. We Thank
- 30:06Speaker 2: you for your time. We really enjoyed it.
- 30:08Speaker 7: Thank you guys,
