- 0:04This is living. Waters of Grace, the teaching
- 0:07ministry of Lewis Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary
- 0:10Chapel of Westmoreland County in Greensburg, PA.
- 0:15Now here's Pastor Lewis as he continues teaching through God's
- 0:18Word. Pastor Clark always said there's
- 0:38a famine for the word of God and it's so true.
- 0:40There's a famine for the word of God.
- 0:42And that's why I love this church because when you come to
- 0:46church, you come bringing Bibles, you come with the
- 0:49intention to hear the Word of God.
- 0:53You come with the intention to learn more about the Word of
- 0:56God, to dig into the Word of God.
- 0:58So we thank God that in here we can be able to share the
- 1:01Scripture one verse at a time and to hear what God has to say.
- 1:06As Christians, we journey through life with Jesus by our
- 1:10side. However, there are times when we
- 1:13may overlook the fact that His Word provides the sustenance we
- 1:17need. We might find ourselves running
- 1:19on empty, and before we realize it, we can end up in a difficult
- 1:23situation without thinking about turning to Him for help.
- 1:27That's why in today's message, Pastor Lewis reminds you that
- 1:31attending church is not just about fulfilling an obligation
- 1:35or participating in a social event.
- 1:38It's an opportunity to fill up your spiritual tank.
- 1:43Now here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of Jude, chapter one with
- 1:46today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:50Before we go into all that, I do want to share or just kind of
- 1:56give us a backdrop of where we've come so far.
- 2:00If we remember a few weeks ago when we first started this, the
- 2:03whole idea is the reason why we're talking about these false
- 2:08teachers is because Jude, who initially intended to write this
- 2:13letter for the purpose of being able to just encourage the
- 2:19believers, encourage them in their in their faith, just to
- 2:24talk about the common salvation and all the things that they had
- 2:27in common being saved. But the Holy Spirit moved on
- 2:33them and said, no, I want you to take this a different way.
- 2:36We are in a time right now where there's so many false teachers
- 2:41and so many such a big famine for the word of God and, and,
- 2:45and we need to do more than just talk about the common salvation,
- 2:50but we need to exhort the believers to contend earnestly
- 2:56for the faith. So he decided that he would
- 3:00write this to exhort us and them to be steadfast to be unmovable
- 3:08when it comes to the faith, and not just a faith that comes with
- 3:14someone's opinions or faith that includes someone's psychology or
- 3:19someone's philosophy. But he said the faith that was
- 3:23once for all delivered to the Saints, that mean the very word,
- 3:28the very doctrine that was passed down from the apostles
- 3:33that they received from Jesus Christ, that they gave to the
- 3:37people. And we now share with each other
- 3:40that faith is what we need to contend for, that striving to
- 3:45strive for that faith, to agonize for that faith and to to
- 3:49do it earnestly, to do it with everything that we have on the
- 3:52inside of us. And then he goes on and he tells
- 3:55us he said been the reason why we need to contend for the
- 3:58faith. And it's not much different than
- 3:59what it is now. We need to contend for the faith
- 4:01because you know, there's false teachers, there's teachers that
- 4:03are teaching things contrary to the faith that was given to the
- 4:07apostles, just like today, there's teachers that are
- 4:10teaching things that are contrary to the faith.
- 4:14Pastor Clark always said there's a famine for the word of God.
- 4:17And it's so true. There's a famine for the word of
- 4:19God. And that's why I love this
- 4:22church because when you come to church, you come bringing
- 4:25Bibles, you come with the intention to hear the word of
- 4:29God. You come with the intention to
- 4:32learn more about the Word of God, to dig into the Word of
- 4:34God. So we thank God that in here we
- 4:37can be able to share the Scripture one verse at a time
- 4:40and to hear what God has to say. But here he said in verse four
- 4:46said that there's certain men crepin.
- 4:48I said that they were creeps that crept and they crepin and
- 4:52they came in unnoticed and they begin to do ungodly things and
- 4:57speak ungodly things and speak things that were untrue, abusing
- 5:01the very grace of God, even denying Jesus Christ.
- 5:07And then in verse 5 he says, but we can always be encouraged when
- 5:13he used that word. But he said, but I want to
- 5:16remind you and he wants to remind them about the and us
- 5:21about the character of God, the holiness of God, the
- 5:26righteousness of God. And in doing that, he gives us 3
- 5:30examples of those who sinned against God and were judged.
- 5:35And of course, if you remember, we talked about the children of
- 5:38Israel who was in, you know, once they got out of Egypt and
- 5:42he delivered them out of Egypt, how they were unbelievers in the
- 5:46wilderness. And those who, who, who were
- 5:48unbelievers, they perished in the wilderness, they were
- 5:53judged. And even the angels in verse 6,
- 5:56he talked about the angels who didn't keep their proper domain,
- 6:00but they end up sinning against God and rebelling against God,
- 6:03even coming down and committing sexual acts with, with people.
- 6:07You can read about that over in Genesis in chapter 6, how he was
- 6:10these, the sons of men came in and, and, and had sexual
- 6:13relationships with the daughters of men.
- 6:15And they created these giants and these Nephilim and, and
- 6:19thank you. And these people and these
- 6:21people end up being they, they perished in the flood.
- 6:25They perished in the flood. And then he also talked about
- 6:28Sodom and Gomorrah. And again, we, we talked about
- 6:32how God judged Sodom and Gomorrah because of their
- 6:35perversions, because of them going after strange flesh,
- 6:40having unnatural desires, men desiring men and women desiring
- 6:46women and, and, and, and the place was just a mess, even to
- 6:50the point where they challenged or threatened to abuse the
- 6:55angels of the Lord who came to the check the place out because
- 6:59they wanted to make sure before they destroyed it that they had
- 7:03good reason to do so. And they did so these three
- 7:07examples, Old Testament examples gave a a peek into the the, the
- 7:12character of God and to the holiness of God and to the
- 7:16righteousness of God. Sin will be judged.
- 7:21Sin will be judged. So now we come here to verse 8
- 7:25and he says likewise. I want you to look at that word.
- 7:30He says likewise also these dreamers.
- 7:36And I'm going to, I'm going to just go ahead and read it down
- 7:38to read verse 8:00 and 9:00 and then we'll come back and we're
- 7:42going to make comment about that.
- 7:43He says likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh.
- 7:49They reject authority and speak evil of dignitaries.
- 7:54Yet Michael the Archangel, in contending with the devil, when
- 7:59he disputed about the body of Moses, deter dared not to bring
- 8:05against him a reviling accusation.
- 8:09But he said, the Lord rebuke you.
- 8:11There's a lot in this little one or two verses when he says
- 8:16likewise, he's mean. Yeah.
- 8:17In the same manner as or just like Sodom and Gomorrah, just
- 8:24like they how they defiled their flesh, these dreamers defile
- 8:29their flesh. Just like they rejected
- 8:32authority and did not want to listen to the authority of God
- 8:36or the word of God. So these dreamers reject
- 8:40authority and they speak evil of dignitaries.
- 8:45Now this dreamers, what in the world is he saying to be these
- 8:48dreamers? What exactly is a dreamer?
- 8:51Well, for them, they're dreamer. They consider them dreamers
- 8:54because they're really, they don't, they don't really live
- 8:57in, they don't really live realistic lives.
- 8:59They they live their lives based on these dreams that they have
- 9:03that they think came from God. But it obviously don't because
- 9:06they're doing things that are contrary to the word of God.
- 9:09So these dreams come from other places or these visions that
- 9:12they have, and they live by these things thinking that it's
- 9:15OK, it's OK, you know, to live this way.
- 9:19Even these visions that say that sexual immorality is a part of
- 9:23salvation and it's OK, you know, to defile your body sexually,
- 9:27it's part of salvation because your body is evil anyway.
- 9:31It's your spirit that you have to be concerned about.
- 9:33That's evil. That is not of the Lord.
- 9:36Those are visions that they're making up.
- 9:38They're unrealistic. I told you a while ago, my
- 9:42grandmother and her wisdom she taught me years ago when I was
- 9:47young, she said to me, we're talking about how preachers are
- 9:51called to the ministry. And, and she was explaining to
- 9:55me how pastors and those who preach the word of God, they're
- 9:59called by God and then they're sent out.
- 10:01But then she warned me, she said, now there are those who
- 10:04are sent and then there's those who just went.
- 10:08And, and she was explaining to me that there's some false
- 10:10teachers out there, that they were not called by God.
- 10:14They were not called even by their authority.
- 10:16They just got up and decide they want to start pre.
- 10:18They just went. They just went, and that's
- 10:22exactly what we're talking about here with these dreamers.
- 10:24These are just men who they were not anointed by God, they were
- 10:28not called by God, they didn't have the Spirit of God, and they
- 10:31just start teaching and preaching, coming out from the
- 10:34body, speaking things that are contrary to the doctrine of the
- 10:38apostles. It's also true that they're out
- 10:42of touch with reality and they live these unrealistic lives and
- 10:46instead of believing according to the truth of Scripture, they
- 10:51have their own way of doing things according to their own
- 10:54dreams. They turn away from God's truth
- 10:58and they feed themselves. They feed their themselves on
- 11:00these false doctrine. And when you feed themselves,
- 11:04they're feeding their own flesh. They're not filling the spirit,
- 11:06they're not feeding the spirit, they're feeding their flesh.
- 11:10Then, because they're feeding their flesh, their egos and
- 11:14pride begins to rise out of that, and that encourages them
- 11:17to rebel against truth. These aren't doctrines that come
- 11:22from the Holy Spirit. These aren't doctrines that they
- 11:25receive from the apostles. These are demonic doctrines,
- 11:29doctrines of demons. First Timothy 41 and two says
- 11:33that they depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits
- 11:39and doctrines of demons. These dreamers and one of the
- 11:46things that there's three things that he said that these dreamers
- 11:48do. First thing that they do is that
- 11:49they defile the flesh. These dreamers defile the flesh.
- 11:55Now obviously you're talking about the same way that they did
- 11:58with the sexual immorality over here and what was Sodom and
- 12:02Gomorrah over in verse 7, how those and that lived in Sodom
- 12:06and Gomorrah and the surrounding areas, how they defiled their
- 12:10flesh by having immoral sexual relationships going after
- 12:15strange. But perversion is basically what
- 12:18they what they end up doing. And in doing so, they defiled
- 12:22their bodies, they defiled their minds and, and now what
- 12:25defilement is basically it's being impure.
- 12:29When you defile your flesh, it's being impure.
- 12:31It's dishonor it desecrate desecration of the body and
- 12:36mind. Usually when you talk about
- 12:39defilement, they're usually referred to sexual immorality.
- 12:42But like it like it wasn't solemn.
- 12:44However, there's a lot of ways that we can defile ourselves
- 12:47now. Now back in the Old Testament
- 12:49when they talk about defilement, you know, there there you talk
- 12:52about defilement in terms of, you know, not being clean.
- 12:55So if someone touched the dead body, that was defiling to them.
- 12:59If someone ate with unclean hands, that was like defiling to
- 13:03them or any of those kind of thing.
- 13:05Tucks A leper. You couldn't, you know, you were
- 13:07defiled. You weren't clean until you had
- 13:09to go through the ritual. And they had all these rituals
- 13:12of how to make one clean, you know, washing the hands.
- 13:15Jesus talked about that over in Mark 7.
- 13:18He talks about how they did wash their hands several times and,
- 13:21and, and how they have to do all these, these rituals to become
- 13:24clean. Well, now you don't have to do
- 13:27all those things to become clean.
- 13:28You confess your sins to the Lord Jesus Christ and you repent
- 13:33of those sins and it's the blood of Jesus Christ that cleanses
- 13:37us. The blood of Jesus Christ
- 13:40cleanses us, but there has to be a confession and there has to be
- 13:44a repentance. That's the that's the humility
- 13:46that we need that can make us clean.
- 13:49And we can't cleanse ourselves. There's no way that we can
- 13:52cleanse ourselves, but we can become cleansed through the
- 13:57blood of Jesus Christ that he shed for us on Calvary.
- 14:01And thank God for that. In that blood that he shed 2000
- 14:04years ago, it's still just as efficacious today.
- 14:08It can still cleanse, still cleanse sins today, hasn't lost
- 14:13its power, thank God. So he talked about this, this
- 14:17defilement and, and how they defile themselves.
- 14:21They defile themselves even through the way that they think.
- 14:24Jesus taught us over in Mark 7, and I'm just going to go there
- 14:27very quickly because I want to read that scripture over in Mark
- 14:307. He taught us that defilement
- 14:32doesn't come from anything that we put in to our bodies, but the
- 14:36defilement comes from what comes out of us.
- 14:39It comes out of the heart. And he talked about the things
- 14:42that defile us. And over here in Mark Chapter 7,
- 14:47speaking in verse, starting at verse 21, he says, For from
- 14:53within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts,
- 14:58adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness,
- 15:03wickedness, deceit, a lewdness and an evil eye, blasphemy,
- 15:09pride, foolishness, all these evil things come from within a
- 15:16man and defiles a man. So these are the things that
- 15:18come out of the heart. These are things that we store
- 15:20up in the heart that defiles us. It's not the things that we eat.
- 15:24It's not washing, it's not eaten with unwashing hands.
- 15:26But these men, these dreamers, these false teachers, they
- 15:30defiled themselves because of the things that were in their
- 15:33heart. They were covetous.
- 15:34They were ungodly men. According to the Scripture here,
- 15:38these were men who, who, who, who were involved themselves in
- 15:41sexual morality and deceit of all types.
- 15:45They defiled themselves. So then it also talked about the
- 15:49fact that they rejected authority.
- 15:52Well, if men are not godly and if they're doing things on their
- 15:56own, then they will reject authority.
- 15:59And that's exactly what these men did.
- 16:02They rejected authority. They didn't want to do what was
- 16:06according to the word of God, and they rejected those who God
- 16:10had put in authority over them. It's a dangerous thing to be to
- 16:14reject the authority that God puts over us.
- 16:17He put something, He puts people in authority over us for a
- 16:19reason. Not only when they reject the
- 16:23authority, they think that they're rejecting the person
- 16:26themselves, but they're not. When you reject the authority
- 16:28that God puts in place for you're rejecting God, you're
- 16:32rejecting God. Samuel told Saul that the
- 16:36people, when they wanted a king, Samuel felt like the people were
- 16:41rejecting him. And God said no, they're
- 16:43rejecting me, they're rejecting me.
- 16:48So God's authority and God put authority in place.
- 16:52That's the authority that we should submit to.
- 16:54But these dreamers, they don't practice submission to
- 16:58authority, They practice rejection of the authority.
- 17:02And we have to be careful with that, not to reject the
- 17:04authority. Even if we don't agree with
- 17:07authority, the word of God will deal and God will deal with the
- 17:12authority that we may object to. He says, therefore, you know,
- 17:16therefore, basically when they reject the authority, they
- 17:20reject the authority because they want to be an authority
- 17:22themselves. Often times that's what makes
- 17:24them the Antichrist, because they want to be in authority
- 17:27instead of Christ. So it makes them an Antichrist.
- 17:32And then of course, the third thing that they mentioned is the
- 17:34fact that they speak evil of dignitaries.
- 17:37That's speaking evil with angels or the glorious ones speaking
- 17:42evil with them. And then go a little further.
- 17:45We can go down a little further. And once we get to verse 9, he's
- 17:47going to give an example of what he means by that.
- 17:50But you know, angels would play the a very prominent role with
- 17:55the Lord, even though we know angels are lower than Jesus
- 17:59Christ. But yet it was angels, It was
- 18:02angels who was here during the time that the Lord had it even
- 18:07brought in the law. I'm going to go back to
- 18:08Deuteronomy, go Old Testament here for a second, and I'm going
- 18:12to try to show this to you how important it is to God about how
- 18:16important angels were in the prominent place that they had
- 18:21with him because they were there for a number of very important
- 18:26events. And over here in Deuteronomy
- 18:29chapter 33, it's going to read this small verse here 33 and
- 18:35verse 2. I'm going to read 1 and 2.
- 18:37It says now this is a blessing with which Moses the man of God,
- 18:42blessed the children of Israel before his death.
- 18:45And he said the Lord came from Sinai and dawned on them from
- 18:51Sire and he shone forth from Mount Paran and he came with 10
- 18:58thousands of Saints, in other words, 10,000 of angels from his
- 19:03right hand came, came a fiery law for them.
- 19:09And then verse 3 say yes, he loves the people and all his
- 19:12Saints are in his hand. They sit down at your feet.
- 19:16Everyone receives your words. So angels were there during the
- 19:22time that when he came down and he appeared and even over here
- 19:26and this is and this is one that I I thought was very interesting
- 19:29as well over here in Acts. Let's go to the book of Acts
- 19:33real quick concerning the angels in the book of Acts Chapter 7,
- 19:39and most of you probably already know that we're talking about
- 19:42Stephen. So now we're looking at what
- 19:44happened when Stephen was being persecuted.
- 19:48And Chapter 7, verse 53, and I'm going to start at verse 52, he
- 19:55says, which of the angels did your father's not persecute?
- 19:58He's talking to the Pharisees and those religious elites who
- 20:01wanted to kill him. And they and they killed those
- 20:04who foretold the coming of the just one of whom you now have
- 20:09become the betrayers and murderers.
- 20:12And verse 53 is the one I want you to pay attention to.
- 20:15He says, Who have received the law?
- 20:17How do they receive the law? By the direction of angels and
- 20:22have not kept it. Direction of angels and have not
- 20:27kept it. And then just one more Galatians
- 20:31in the book of Galatians. Just trying to draw a picture
- 20:35here of the significance of these angels and why he's
- 20:39talking about how they basically speak evil of dignitaries of
- 20:44these angels. Galatians chapter 3 and look at
- 20:49with me at verse 14. I'm going to start at verse 2.
- 20:54It says this only. I want to learn from you.
- 20:58Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by the
- 21:02hearing of faith? Are you so foolish, having begun
- 21:07in the Spirit that you are now being when I'm now being made
- 21:13perfect in the flesh? And then I want you to go over
- 21:16to verse chapter 4 and in chapter 4, go to chapter 3,
- 21:22verse 19. There we go.
- 21:24OK, chapter 3, verse 19. This is what it says.
- 21:28What purpose then does the law serve?
- 21:31It was added because of transgressions till the seed
- 21:36should come to whom the promise was made to.
- 21:40The seed obviously was Jesus Christ, and it was appointed
- 21:44through angels by the hand of a mediator.
- 21:48Now a meteor does not mediate for only one, but God is 1.
- 21:54So he talks about the importance of angels and how important it
- 21:57was at the time of the law and the presenting of the law, how
- 22:02the angels even came with him. Over in Exodus talks about how
- 22:04the angels, the Lord came with him at the time when he came to
- 22:08to Mount Sier, which is where he came to present the law.
- 22:14So when you talk about all these things and all these things, how
- 22:17they combine and these men who did not have a problem with
- 22:21speaking evil of these dignitaries.
- 22:24And so he gave an example. He said, no, wait a minute, you
- 22:26being mere men don't have a problem speaking evil
- 22:30dignitaries. Yet Michael the Archangel who is
- 22:33more powerful than most men, he wouldn't even speak evil to an
- 22:38Angel. So look at what he says in verse
- 22:419, back in Jude verse 9, he says, yet Michael the Archangel
- 22:45and contending with the devil when he disputed about the body
- 22:50of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling
- 22:54accusation, but said the Lord rebuke you.
- 22:58So he's making a point here. And what he's saying is that
- 23:01these dreamers, these false teachers, they don't mind
- 23:04speaking evil about angels or dignitaries or these spiritual
- 23:09authority, spiritual authorities, they don't mind
- 23:12speaking evil of them and they don't know anything about them,
- 23:15but yet they speak evil of them. But yet Michael the Archangel
- 23:19who was constantly before the throne of God, who was basically
- 23:24the battle Angel. I mean, he would come to me back
- 23:26in the book of Dan and talked about Michael the Archangel
- 23:29doing battle with the devil when he wanted to come to Daniel,
- 23:33when Daniel had requested a word and he was coming, but he was
- 23:37being delayed because he was in battle with the devil, with a
- 23:40demon. So Michael the Archangel was not
- 23:43a wimp. He was powerful Angel and had a
- 23:46lot of authority. But yet he will not bring a
- 23:49railing accusation against Satan.
- 23:53He said the Lord rebuked you. You've been listening to Living
- 23:58Waters of Grace with Pastor Lewis Harrell at Calvary Chapel
- 24:02Westmoreland in Greensburg, PA. As Pastor Lewis continues to
- 24:07preach through the book of Jude, we want you to realize that you
- 24:11can't be a part time Christian. If you're going to follow Jesus,
- 24:15He is going to ask for your undivided loyalty.
- 24:19If you try to serve your own interests while following Jesus,
