Latest / ACC Football Addiction (Atlantic Coast Conference) / Miami CRUSHES Central Michigan But Canes' Massive Problem EXPOSED!

- 0:00Speaker 1: 52-3, that's not a football score. It was a mismatch,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and we knew that going into Saturday. Miami came into
- 0:06Speaker 1: this game with one job, take care of business, get
- 0:09Speaker 1: out healthy, and leave Hard Rock Stadium without adding a
- 0:13Speaker 1: new injury to the report. I think Michigan accomplished on
- 0:17Speaker 1: all three. Central Michigan never had a chance in this game.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Miami's starters were on the sidelines well before the fourth quarter,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and for one week, the headline out of Coral Gables
- 0:28Speaker 1: was not who got hurt. This was exactly what that
- 0:32Speaker 1: game was supposed to be. Think about the week you
- 0:34Speaker 1: just had. Two players lost for the season against Wake Forest,
- 0:39Speaker 1: a third out multiple weeks, a quarterback limping around late
- 0:42Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter. It's the kind of stretch that
- 0:46Speaker 1: can spiral a team out of control if it can't
- 0:50Speaker 1: get it under control right away. Miami handled it right.
- 0:54Speaker 1: It buried an overmatched opponent fast. It played its backups extensively,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and it treated a game that it was never going
- 1:02Speaker 1: to lose exactly like that. An opportunity to heal, not
- 1:07Speaker 1: an opportunity to pad stats. There are some things I
- 1:10Speaker 1: want to bring up, though, with this game. This is
- 1:13Speaker 1: TJ Pittenger. It's ACC Football Addiction. We are presented by PrizePix,
- 1:17Speaker 1: where all new users who play a $ 5 lineup and
- 1:19Speaker 1: win get $ 150 in lineups instantly if they use code HMA.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Let's run through how it happened because it went quickly.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Central matched. Michigan actually got on the board first with
- 1:29Speaker 1: a field goal, and that was about the extent of
- 1:31Speaker 1: their afternoon. Mallory answered with a rushing touchdown. From there,
- 1:36Speaker 1: it was a track meet in one direction. Miami scored
- 1:39Speaker 1: four more touchdowns in the second quarter alone. Halftime was 35-3.
- 1:43Speaker 1: It wasn't just a lead. It was a eulogy for
- 1:47Speaker 1: Central Michigan. Darian Minta kept on doing what Darian Minta does.
- 1:52Speaker 1: He padded his stats, not in a bad way. Don't
- 1:55Speaker 1: read that wrong, but not in a bad way at all.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Just incredibly, insanely efficient. He's one of the most fun
- 2:02Speaker 1: players to watch in this sport. 23 of 27, 338 yards,
- 2:07Speaker 1: three TD passes. He had a run in from a
- 2:10Speaker 1: yard out himself. Four touchdowns for a guy who a
- 2:14Speaker 1: month into the season has now thrown for over a
- 2:16Speaker 1: thousand yards through four games. without so much as a hiccup.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Upshaw caught one, Tony caught one, Barcake caught one. This
- 2:25Speaker 1: wasn't a guy just beating up on a max secondary.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It was an entire receiving room that took turns taking shots.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And then in the third quarter, Jamal Merriweather, an offensive lineman,
- 2:38Speaker 1: fell on a fumble in the end zone for a
- 2:40Speaker 1: touchdown of his own. That made it 42-3, somewhere around
- 2:43Speaker 1: the six-minute mark, I believe. Of the third quarter, Miami
- 2:48Speaker 1: started pulling starters. The backups played the rest of the way.
- 2:51Speaker 1: 52-3 is where it ended. Fletcher didn't play. Held out
- 2:56Speaker 1: as a precaution after last week's injury. And here's the
- 2:59Speaker 1: best sentence that I get to say about this game.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Nobody else added to the injury list. That was the
- 3:05Speaker 1: point of Saturday and Miami delivered on it. Chris Wheatley
- 3:09Speaker 1: Humphrey handled the workload in Fletcher's absence. He looked the
- 3:12Speaker 1: part doing it. Obviously, this Defense was not good enough
- 3:16Speaker 1: to slow anyone on Miami's roster down. This wasn't competitive
- 3:21Speaker 1: football by the second quarter. It was Miami running a
- 3:24Speaker 1: controlled scrimmage against a team that had no business being
- 3:28Speaker 1: on the same field. I want to talk about the
- 3:30Speaker 1: three things that actually mattered in this. If you haven't already,
- 3:35Speaker 1: just give a quick shout out to the audio-only podcast feeds.
- 3:39Speaker 1: You can get those on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker, wherever.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I will link it in the description. make sure that
- 3:45Speaker 1: you are subscribed there. A lot of you enjoy the
- 3:47Speaker 1: content we put out. A lot of you enjoy the videos.
- 3:50Speaker 1: It would be a big, big help if you were
- 3:52Speaker 1: subscribed over on the audio side as well. Takeaway number one,
- 3:57Speaker 1: Miami took care of business the way that it needed to.
- 4:00Speaker 1: It wasn't just the final score. It was really the
- 4:03Speaker 1: entire shape of the game. Miami's defense held Central Michigan
- 4:07Speaker 1: to 21 rushing yards. On 25 carries, it's not a
- 4:11Speaker 1: bad day running the ball. It was a program that
- 4:14Speaker 1: got physically dominated at the line of scrimmage for all
- 4:18Speaker 1: four quarters. Miami forced three turnovers. They didn't give the
- 4:21Speaker 1: ball away once. By the time the third quarter was
- 4:24Speaker 1: winding down, this was the backups against backups. The starters
- 4:27Speaker 1: were all resting on the sideline. Instead of racking up
- 4:30Speaker 1: extra snaps, it was a game that was decided in
- 4:34Speaker 1: the second quarter. That's what a get right week is
- 4:37Speaker 1: supposed to look like. You bury your opponent early, get
- 4:41Speaker 1: the lead to a point where you don't need to
- 4:43Speaker 1: risk anything. Get your starters out, backups in, and walk
- 4:48Speaker 1: away from the day with the same roster health or
- 4:51Speaker 1: better than you walked in with. Miami checked all of
- 4:54Speaker 1: those boxes. You can compare that to how easily this
- 4:58Speaker 1: could have gone differently. A team that's already banged up,
- 5:01Speaker 1: they're coming off of back-to-back weeks with hits and injuries
- 5:04Speaker 1: that can absolutely talk itself into playing starters deeper into
- 5:08Speaker 1: a blowout than they need to. There was no reason
- 5:11Speaker 1: to chase style points. There was no reason to chase
- 5:14Speaker 1: a stat line, a highlight. You'll have plenty of opportunities
- 5:17Speaker 1: for that later in the year. The moment the outcome
- 5:20Speaker 1: stopped being in question, the decision makers on Miami staff
- 5:23Speaker 1: made the right call. The coaching side of things mattered
- 5:27Speaker 1: just as much as anything that happened on the field.
- 5:29Speaker 1: And that was all really good. Here's where I won't
- 5:33Speaker 1: have as much fun. Takeaway number two, the penalties in
- 5:37Speaker 1: this game. And I'll tell you, I'll preface it by
- 5:41Speaker 1: saying the refs were atrocious. I don't know what they
- 5:43Speaker 1: were looking at on that Tony one-handed catch that was incredible.
- 5:48Speaker 1: There were a lot of things that need to be
- 5:50Speaker 1: cleaned up from a refereeing standpoint. But I don't make
- 5:53Speaker 1: refereeing videos. I make college football videos. 13 penalties for
- 5:57Speaker 1: 107 yards. Five false starts up front. At home against
- 6:06Speaker 1: a team that you are so much better than, multiple
- 6:10Speaker 1: holding calls, a personal foul on light foot that wiped
- 6:15Speaker 1: out a huge play. The offensive pass interference, which I
- 6:20Speaker 1: don't love that call. I thought it was terrible. The
- 6:23Speaker 1: officiating in this game wasn't great. There were calls that
- 6:27Speaker 1: I didn't love in certain spots. I thought there were
- 6:30Speaker 1: a couple of flags that felt like a stretch. But
- 6:32Speaker 1: if I take out four of them, nine is still
- 6:34Speaker 1: too many. I think a lot of it's on Miami.
- 6:40Speaker 1: The holding calls looked fine to me. The false starts
- 6:44Speaker 1: are pretty black and white. And here's why this worries me,
- 6:48Speaker 1: because it's a trend. It didn't matter in a 52-point
- 6:52Speaker 1: win or 52-point performance against Central Michigan. They're kind of
- 6:57Speaker 1: an inconvenience in that game. They certainly were never going
- 7:00Speaker 1: to change the outcome. You probably could have had 25
- 7:02Speaker 1: and still won this game. But they just make your
- 7:05Speaker 1: team look a little less clean. And think about what's coming.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Clemson has been undefeated since losing to LSU. And I
- 7:14Speaker 1: still don't think they're great. But if you go on
- 7:16Speaker 1: the road this weekend to Clemson and have 13 penalties
- 7:19Speaker 1: for over 100 yards, that's not good news. Florida State
- 7:22Speaker 1: is not a great team. If you let Florida State
- 7:28Speaker 1: hang around because of penalties, they have playmakers that can
- 7:30Speaker 1: burn you deep and late in a game. Virginia Tech
- 7:34Speaker 1: found a way to come back yesterday, still undefeated. I
- 7:37Speaker 1: don't think they're a great team. But if you have
- 7:40Speaker 1: over 100 yards of penalties, you're going to let that
- 7:42Speaker 1: team stick around. And God forbid you go on the
- 7:44Speaker 1: road in South Bend and do it there, that ain't
- 7:48Speaker 1: going to be good news. I can guarantee you that.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It's the biggest disappointment that I have with this Miami
- 7:53Speaker 1: team so far this year is the penalties and the
- 7:55Speaker 1: sloppy play from that perspective. And again, I started takeaway
- 7:59Speaker 1: number two, blaming the refs. I think they were bad.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It doesn't make up for Miami's just lack of focus,
- 8:08Speaker 1: attention to detail, whatever it is that gives you 13
- 8:12Speaker 1: penalties in one game against a Mac team. You're not
- 8:16Speaker 1: going to have that luxury in October and November. It
- 8:18Speaker 1: has to get cleaned up immediately. You go on the
- 8:21Speaker 1: road to Clemson this week. You cannot continue to be
- 8:24Speaker 1: a thing. Seven penalties against Wake. I thought that would
- 8:29Speaker 1: be the wake-up call, no pun intended. 13 against Central Michigan.
- 8:34Speaker 1: That is a concerning trend to me. This staff is
- 8:38Speaker 1: incredibly serious about fixing its mistakes and its shortcomings, and
- 8:43Speaker 1: I had expected to be fixed this week in practice.
- 8:45Speaker 1: We'll absolutely talk about that with D-Money on State of
- 8:48Speaker 1: the State when we talk about this game on Tuesday morning.
- 8:51Speaker 1: That goes live at 11 a.m. We'd love to have
- 8:53Speaker 1: you in the comments for it. The margin for sloppy
- 8:56Speaker 1: football is 10%. reducing by the week. And you can
- 9:01Speaker 1: get away with it against Central Michigan. It has to
- 9:04Speaker 1: get fixed now. Takeaway number three, up front, I thought
- 9:07Speaker 1: Miami looked really good. Not surprised by this. Probably could
- 9:11Speaker 1: have written this before I even started to watch this
- 9:14Speaker 1: game on replay. But Miami imposed its will on both
- 9:18Speaker 1: sides of the ball. And I think that's a good
- 9:21Speaker 1: signal to It's not the end-all be-all because it was
- 9:24Speaker 1: Central Michigan, but it's a good signal heading into the
- 9:26Speaker 1: rest of the schedule. I wanted to see the interior
- 9:29Speaker 1: of this offensive line dominate, and they did. Again, I
- 9:33Speaker 1: expected them to. This is an overmatched opponent, but 201
- 9:38Speaker 1: rushing yards for Miami. Chris Wheatley Humphrey went for 104
- 9:42Speaker 1: yards on just 11 carries. He had over nine yards
- 9:44Speaker 1: a pop. It's not a running back that was making
- 9:47Speaker 1: guys miss in space. It was an offensive line that
- 9:50Speaker 1: moved bodies off of the ball, and they created room
- 9:52Speaker 1: before he even got there. On the other side of
- 9:55Speaker 1: the ball, defense did the same thing. Central Michigan's offense...
- 10:00Speaker 1: nothing running the ball yesterday. A sack on the opening
- 10:03Speaker 1: drive that helped kill that before it ever even started.
- 10:07Speaker 1: It wasn't just Miami skill players winning individual matchups. Both
- 10:11Speaker 1: lines of scrimmage controlled this game from the snap to
- 10:15Speaker 1: the final whistle. That's the version of of Miami that
- 10:20Speaker 1: will travel well. Skill talent can at times get neutralized
- 10:23Speaker 1: by a good defense or a good scheme, but offensive
- 10:26Speaker 1: defensive lines that can physically impose themselves, that will translate
- 10:31Speaker 1: against anybody, anywhere, anytime. If that trench performance is real
- 10:36Speaker 1: and a sign of things to come, if they are
- 10:38Speaker 1: figuring out the interior of that offensive line, that's a
- 10:42Speaker 1: really good thing. The caveat is that it was a
- 10:46Speaker 1: Mac roster. It, is not Clemson or what they'll have
- 10:51Speaker 1: next week. What we saw from Miami on Saturday up
- 10:54Speaker 1: front is a very good thing. Their lines of scrimmage
- 10:58Speaker 1: controlled the game physically from start to finish. What I
- 11:01Speaker 1: want to see now is if that holds up against
- 11:03Speaker 1: other ACC teams, certainly Notre Dame, and then certainly playoff
- 11:07Speaker 1: teams that will come to follow. But you're not going
- 11:11Speaker 1: to complain about seeing it no matter who the opponent
- 11:13Speaker 1: was here in week four. So here's where Miami sits.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Four games in, four wins. For the first time all season,
- 11:22Speaker 1: the story isn't about who's hurt. The defense is playing
- 11:26Speaker 1: downhill football. The offensive line is, I think, improving. Mensah
- 11:31Speaker 1: is playing at a Heisman level right now. And there
- 11:36Speaker 1: aren't many quarterbacks in the sport that you could even
- 11:38Speaker 1: compare to the way that he's playing today. The only
- 11:42Speaker 1: real blemish on this performance, the thing that keeps this
- 11:46Speaker 1: from being a perfect week to me, is the penalties.
- 11:50Speaker 1: That has to be cleaned up. The undisciplined problem that
- 11:54Speaker 1: has been lurking since the weight game has to be
- 11:57Speaker 1: fixed this week. If that does get fixed, this team
- 12:00Speaker 1: continues to be very dangerous. If you don't fix it,
- 12:03Speaker 1: I think it's going to cost Miami a game that
- 12:04Speaker 1: they should win. Clemson is up next. We'll find out
- 12:07Speaker 1: a lot more about this team when they travel to
- 12:10Speaker 1: Death Valley this weekend. Let me know your thoughts down
- 12:12Speaker 1: in the comments. We appreciate you guys for tuning in.
