Latest / Fostering Faith / Rooted, Not Rushed: Abiding in Christ
Transcript
- 0:01Welcome back to Fostering Faith. And hey, guys,
- 0:03welcome back. We took that month of August off
- 0:05because we were just busy in a season and just
- 0:08a reset. And so just kind of plan out the rest
- 0:10of the year. And so we are going to be in a sermon
- 0:13series called Rooted, a faith that holds. And
- 0:15so after the summer of busy and just like just
- 0:19enjoying all the things in life, September is
- 0:22going to turn into hopefully like formation of
- 0:25Rooted. And so it's going to be a five week series
- 0:28on how to build your faith. and not dependent
- 0:30on your mood or your ease or perfect circumstances.
- 0:33Each episode is going to explore a practice that
- 0:36God uses to deepen our beliefs. And so abiding
- 0:39in Christ and receiving scripture, honestly praying
- 0:41and obeying in just ordinary life and remaining
- 0:44faithful in the community and hardship. And so
- 0:47our anchor verse for this month is going to be
- 0:49Colossians 2, 6, and 7. Therefore you receive
- 0:53Jesus Christ, the Lord. So walk in Him, rooted.
- 0:56and built up in him and established in our faith,
- 0:59just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
- 1:02And so in this episode, we're going to be talking
- 1:04about rooted, not rushed, but abiding in Christ.
- 1:08And so in this episode, we're going to be, we
- 1:11live in a culture that celebrates speed, visible
- 1:13progress, and so constant production, but Jesus
- 1:17forms his people differently. In this episode,
- 1:20we're going to be talking about what it means
- 1:22to abide in Christ, why hidden roots matter more
- 1:25than public root. and how do we build a daily
- 1:28life that is still connected to Jesus with teachings
- 1:32from John 15, Colossians 2, Psalm 1. And this
- 1:35episode offers practical rhythms for listeners
- 1:39and you guys who are tired of rushing and are
- 1:42ready to grow deep. And so I hope that you guys
- 1:47are finding these podcasts informational, helpful,
- 1:50like inspiring. And then I think that we might
- 1:52add some fitness layers to this and some bonus
- 1:55episodes like later on. and just fostering your
- 1:57faith and then maybe fostering your faith and
- 2:00fitness. But we need to know in your comments,
- 2:02we need to know that you guys are enjoying this
- 2:04if I'm just talking to myself. And so those listeners,
- 2:07leave some comments. And so leave us and let
- 2:09us know that you are listening and then tell
- 2:11the algorithm that these are helpful. And so
- 2:14these are just like little seeds. This is not
- 2:17just to, this is a supplement. And so this is
- 2:20the time that you're spending with Christ. And
- 2:21so hopefully these are just little seeds. that
- 2:23are being planted so you guys can grow deeper
- 2:25in Christ and walk with them yourself. And so
- 2:28if you are new here, my name is Tracy. I will
- 2:30be your host today. I'm so glad that you're here.
- 2:32We took August off as a reset and get back to
- 2:34school and new semesters, finish out our birthdays,
- 2:37breathe a little bit and make room for what God
- 2:39is doing next. And so now we're stepping into
- 2:42September and I'm coming back with one more word
- 2:45and it's rooted. And so we've done as We've done
- 2:48podcasts on Rooted before, but I just think it's
- 2:50so important that we have just deep roots. And
- 2:53so July was about freedom. We talked about wounds
- 2:57and shame and anxiety and identity. And it is
- 3:01about, we talked more of the things of God and
- 3:06God wants... to bring us out and what He wants
- 3:10us to break us off. But freedom is not only about
- 3:12what you leave behind. Freedom also creates room
- 3:16for something new to grow. And so if God pulls
- 3:18out, pulls you out of bondage, He doesn't not
- 3:22intend for you just to stand out there forever
- 3:25in an empty field, no, He plans you. He establishes
- 3:28you. He teaches you on how to live free. And
- 3:31so our series this month is called Rooted. A
- 3:33faith that holds our anchor scripture that we
- 3:35talked about before is going to be Colossians
- 3:372, 6 through 7. So therefore, as you've received
- 3:40Jesus Christ, your Lord, so walk with him rooted
- 3:42and built up and established in faith, just as
- 3:46you were taught abounding in Thanksgiving. So
- 3:48Paul gives us a picture of a Christian life that
- 3:50has depth, rooted, built up, established, not
- 3:55frantic, not fake, not held together by a good
- 3:58week or a good mood or a good worship song. This
- 4:02is faith that can hold whatever life gets hard
- 4:05and loud and it doesn't go as planned and I what
- 4:08I want to have a Question that kind of sits with
- 4:12you is how are you growing? Are you only just
- 4:16moving? So those things are not the same you
- 4:19can move fast and still go nowhere And so just
- 4:22if you're on running on a treadmill you're going
- 4:24places But yet you are not going anywhere and
- 4:27you could have a full calendar and have an empty
- 4:30stole You can have a full bank account and have
- 4:33an empty soul. You can have a million followers
- 4:35and be the loneliest person out there. And so
- 4:39you can listen to sermons. You can say Bible
- 4:41verses. You can serve everyone around you and
- 4:45still living spiritually disconnected from the
- 4:48one that you're doing it all for. And so Jesus
- 4:51gives us clear pictures in John 15 that says,
- 4:54I am the vine and you are the branch. The one
- 4:56who remains in me and I am produces much fruit
- 4:59because you can do nothing without me. And some
- 5:02translations use the word abide, remain, stay,
- 5:06make your home with me. Jesus does not say visit
- 5:09me whenever you're in trouble. He does not say
- 5:12check in with me whenever you have extra time.
- 5:15He says remain, remain in me. And let us pray
- 5:19before we go a little bit deeper. And so dear
- 5:21Heavenly Father, thank you so much for today.
- 5:22Thank you so much for these listeners. Thank
- 5:24you that you are not asking us to manufacture
- 5:27a life that we cannot sustain. Thank you for
- 5:30inviting us to remain in you, Jesus. Thank you
- 5:33that you're going to slow our minds down, settle
- 5:34our hearts, show us where we hurry and we're
- 5:38distracted and self -reliant and have thin roots.
- 5:42Thank you that you're planting the truth deep
- 5:44in us today. And we pray this in Jesus' name.
- 5:47Amen. And so the difference between fruits and
- 5:50roots. And so fruit is visible, roots are hidden.
- 5:54And so people celebrate fruit. They can see the
- 5:58promotion, the healed relationships, ministry
- 6:01opportunities, the prayer that is answered, and
- 6:03the way that we hoped. But not a healthy tree
- 6:07begins with fruit. It begins underground. The
- 6:10root system develops in the body when no one
- 6:14applauded. It grows through ordinary days, quiet
- 6:17obedience, repeated surrender. and the time that
- 6:20God was there and nothing dramatic to post about
- 6:23or announce. And there's a problem. We often
- 6:27want visible fruit without hidden formation.
- 6:31And just like we talked about before in class,
- 6:34it's about the transformation that happens whenever
- 6:36we sit with God. And we want peace without practicing
- 6:39the patience of God. We want wisdom without staying
- 6:42in the word. We want spiritual strength without
- 6:44spiritual discipline. We want to stand in the
- 6:46storm, but we do not want to build roots. before
- 6:50the storms arise. And so in Psalm 1 describes
- 6:53a person who delights in God's instruction and
- 6:56meditates on it day and night. And that person
- 6:59is like a tree planted besides the flowing streams
- 7:02that bears its fruits in the seasons, and the
- 7:04leaves do not weather. Notice the order, planted
- 7:07first and then fruit later. The tree is not running
- 7:11on streams and panicking where it's going to
- 7:13find enough water. It is positioned near its
- 7:16source. And so some of us spiritually are exhausted
- 7:19because we keep asking for fruit to do the job
- 7:22of the roots. And so we think about another accomplishment
- 7:26would make us all secure. We think that another
- 7:29dollar sign would make us all the persons. And
- 7:31so another person's approval will make us feel
- 7:34chosen. Another busy season will prove our value.
- 7:38But fruit cannot feed if the roots are not there.
- 7:42The root feeds the fruit. And so our life with
- 7:45God cannot be built from the outside. It is not
- 7:49formed from the inside out. And so abiding is
- 7:52connection and not performance. When God says,
- 7:55He is the vine and we are the branches, He is
- 7:57not giving us another assignment to perform.
- 8:00He is describing dependence. A branch does not
- 8:04mean grit your teeth and produce the grapes.
- 8:07A branch stays connected and receives life from
- 8:11the vine and the fruit grows because life is
- 8:13flowing through it. That matters for the person
- 8:16who is tired of trying to be a good Christian.
- 8:20And maybe you feel like that today, maybe I should
- 8:22pray more, maybe more scripture, maybe I should
- 8:24know more scripture, maybe I should be more patient,
- 8:26less anxious, stop struggling with the same thing.
- 8:29You are working so hard and then you fall. Then
- 8:33shame tells you that you're disappointing God
- 8:35and you avoid him because you feel ashamed and
- 8:38the cycle continues. But Jesus did not say that.
- 8:42He didn't say try harder. Abiding is not earning
- 8:49his love. It is living with his love. It is not
- 8:54about convincing God to come closer. It is waking
- 8:57up to the truth that he's already there. And
- 9:00the gospel is not what you climbed your way to
- 9:04God. The gospel is that God came to you in Christ.
- 9:08Jesus lived in obedience and we could not live
- 9:12without him. and carried out the sins that have
- 9:16not been removed. He died and death was deserved
- 9:19and rose to victory. We received him by grace
- 9:23and Paul says we continue the same way as we
- 9:25received Christ the Lord. So walk with him. How
- 9:30did you receive him? By faith? Not by proving
- 9:34yourself. Not by cleansing everything up first.
- 9:38By trusting his finished work. And how did you
- 9:41walk with him in it. The same way. Daily trust.
- 9:46Daily dependence. Daily grace. And pruning is
- 9:51not rejection. And John 15 also says that the
- 9:54father prunes every branch that bears fruit so
- 9:56no one can bear fruit. Pruning can almost feel
- 10:01like a loss. The door closes. The relationship
- 10:04changes. A role ends. Something that once worked
- 10:08no longer works. The calendar gets clear in a
- 10:11way that you did not choose. We make the mistake
- 10:18that pruning is for punishment because it can
- 10:24involve something that is painfully, but it's
- 10:27being removed. But in Christ, if we're trying
- 10:29to pay the penalty for our sins, Jesus bore that
- 10:33penalty at the cross. Pruning is the Father's
- 10:37careful work in the child that he loves. It removes
- 10:41what drains our life. The crowds are gross and
- 10:44keeps us dependent on something other than God.
- 10:48And to look at what's been removed from your
- 10:50life just recently. Look at what's been removed
- 10:52from your life. And you're like, oh my gosh,
- 10:54why did this happen? Why did this happen? But
- 10:56was that a distraction? Was that keeping your
- 11:00eyes on that and versus keeping your eyes on
- 11:02Him? And that means that ask yourself, what am
- 11:07I calling rejection? Maybe calling a redirection.
- 11:10What am I desperately trying to hold on to because
- 11:13I'm afraid of who I am without it? And sometimes
- 11:16the most spiritual thing that you can do is release
- 11:19what God is no longer asking you to carry. And
- 11:22I can only say this so many times. I see so many
- 11:25people that are tired because they are just so
- 11:28exhausted from trying to strive and grind and
- 11:32just hold on to things that they think are important
- 11:34versus living with our hands wide open and saying,
- 11:37God, this is yours. Take it if it's not from
- 11:41you. And honestly, knowing that's great that
- 11:43we can have a God because we know that he is
- 11:46for us and not against us. We know that his plans
- 11:48are greater than ours. And we know, and it's
- 11:51scary, but we want his will to be done and not
- 11:54ours. Because if he brought us to it, he'll bring
- 11:57us through it. And so hurry makes our roots shallow.
- 12:02And so hurry is not only a schedule problem.
- 12:04But it can become a soul problem whenever we're
- 12:07rushed we skim over everything conversations
- 12:09and meals and scripture prayer and even grief
- 12:11We want god to speak in sentences because we
- 12:15only give him 60 seconds If it's not an instagram
- 12:18reel or if it's not this and i'm not moved within
- 12:2130 seconds or five We're done Jesus was busy,
- 12:25but he is not frantic. He is not a god of chaos.
- 12:29He is a god of order Crowds needed him people
- 12:32interrupted him religious litters opposed him
- 12:34The cross always led to him, and the gospels
- 12:38repeatedly show him withdrawing to a lonely place
- 12:41to pray. He lived for communion with his father,
- 12:45not the demands of the crowds. If Jesus made
- 12:48room to pray, we cannot pretend constant availability
- 12:52is spiritual maturity. We are allowed to be unavailable
- 12:56to the world so you can be present with God.
- 12:59You are allowed to put your phone down. You are
- 13:01allowed to sit in silence before You have the
- 13:04right words. You were allowed to build a life
- 13:06that is faithful and not frantic. And so a simple
- 13:11rule for life this week. And so let us make this
- 13:15practical. And I want you to build these three
- 13:18small points to connect it into your day. And
- 13:20so first, begin before you consume. And so before
- 13:24messages, before social media, before headlines
- 13:27or emails, give God your first few minutes. Read
- 13:31a short passage slowly. Pray. Jesus, I belong
- 13:35to you. Help me remain in you today. And so I
- 13:39read a book on vacation, and it was the 5 a .m.
- 13:43club. And so the majority of you know that I
- 13:45am up early in the morning, and this book really
- 13:48just is the story of my life, I really feel.
- 13:51I feel like it's just all about what we do on
- 13:54a typical day, but they were really, it was really
- 13:56big on... You're not checking your emails, you're
- 13:59not checking social media, you're not doing anything,
- 14:01but you have these certain things that you do
- 14:04before you start your day. And so that is just
- 14:07a great thing. And so before your feet hit the
- 14:09floor in the morning, just talk to him, too.
- 14:13Pause in the middle. And so just set one reminder
- 14:16during the day, when it goes off, stop for one
- 14:19minute, take a breath, name what you're carrying
- 14:21and ask, I am operating from connection or from
- 14:25pressure. And so I have people that have set
- 14:28reminders in their phones all day because we
- 14:30have all the things going on. And if we don't
- 14:32have a reminder, if we don't have an alarm, sometimes
- 14:34we miss it. But just having that pause break,
- 14:37having that one o 'clock, two o 'clock, or if
- 14:39you're at your lunch, just make that your reminder.
- 14:42Hey, what am I carrying from the beginning of
- 14:44my day? Hey God, take this from me. I lay this
- 14:46at your feet. And even just maybe writing it
- 14:48down and throwing it in the trash. And that way
- 14:51it's more symbolic and you're actually doing
- 14:53it. And that way you can just walk into the next
- 14:55part of your day. And that's why I take that
- 14:57breath, that time in the afternoon to do a workout.
- 15:00Now I will say that I've slapped off on my morning
- 15:03or my afternoon workouts because my time with
- 15:05Dia is important. So she's back in school now.
- 15:08And so instead of coming home for lunch just
- 15:10to check on her or taking her to a friend's house
- 15:12during lunchtime. So my time with her is so important.
- 15:17And so I work out in the mornings anyway. And
- 15:19so I'll get back to my routine. But it's just
- 15:21that pause of taking that drive, still talking
- 15:24to him even on my lunch whenever I'm driving
- 15:26home. But it's such that pause. And so I'm refreshed
- 15:29for that second part of my day. And so third,
- 15:32return at night. And so before sleep, looking
- 15:35back with God. And so where do you notice grace?
- 15:39Where did you notice a rush? Where did you notice
- 15:40your resistance? You're not grading yourself,
- 15:43but you're practicing awareness. And so before
- 15:45I go to bed at night, we walk through our day.
- 15:48We walk through all the great things and, hey,
- 15:50I have a question about this. Hey, I need, I
- 15:52would like an answer about that. And just lay
- 15:54it at his feet and just talk to him. And these
- 15:56rhythms are not magical. They do not earn favor.
- 16:00They just simply help us return our attention
- 16:02to the one that is already present. And if you
- 16:06miss the morning, don't. It didn't turn out to
- 16:09be a misrhythm and turns into three weeks of
- 16:12avoidance. Come back at lunch. Come back in your
- 16:14car. Come back while you're folding laundry.
- 16:17The invitation is, it remains and grace always
- 16:20leaves the door open. And so we hope that this
- 16:23message encouraged you. And so there are some
- 16:25workbook questions at our website, fosteringfaithmedia
- 16:28.com. And so we hope that website also too is
- 16:31a great opportunity for you guys to print those
- 16:35workbook pages out and just kind of look through
- 16:36them. And so where are you hurrying and making
- 16:44your spiritual life more shallow? What fruit
- 16:47are you trying to force? What might God be pruning
- 16:50off of you? What are daily moments that you could
- 16:54live and abide in? And so what are these things
- 16:57that are allowing you guys time? And so choose
- 17:01one rhythm, not 10, and faithfully show up every
- 17:06day. And so faithfulness grows through small
- 17:09obedience. And I have my screensaver on there,
- 17:11and I think it's Galatians 6. It was like small
- 17:15steps equal big gains. And so it's just that
- 17:17daily obedience. And so even just with a diet,
- 17:20with rhythms of life and exercise, it's obedience.
- 17:22It's showing up. It's those small walks. It's
- 17:25those small gains that you're going to have over
- 17:26a repeated time. That's what's going to transform
- 17:28you. That's what's going to do all this. And
- 17:31so let's pray. Jesus, thank you so much for everything.
- 17:34Jesus, you are the vine and we are the branches.
- 17:36Forgive us for trying to create apart from you
- 17:40what we can only grow through connection with
- 17:42you. We surrender our hurry, our self -reliance,
- 17:47our need to prove that we are doing enough. Teach
- 17:50us to remain. Give us courage to release what
- 17:53you are trying to prune and patience to trust
- 17:56the healing and hidden works of our roots. Let
- 17:59our lives bear the fruit that looks like your
- 18:02character. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
- 18:04goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self
- 18:06-control. Root in us and build us up. In Jesus'
- 18:10name I pray. Amen. And so thank you so much for
- 18:14spending time with us today. If this episode
- 18:15encouraged you, share it with somebody whose
- 18:18soul is running on tired. Follow the podcast,

- 18:35week, we're going to be talking about what happens
- 18:36when the Word of God moves from the page into
- 18:41the deepest parts of us. And so until then, stay
- 18:44rooted, stay close to Jesus, and have a wonderful
- 18:47week. We love you guys. Bye.
