- 0:00Speaker 1: Be in this league podcast network.
- 0:05Speaker 2: There's this Dynasty Sports Life, a podcast about playing fantasy baseball, basketball, football,
- 0:10Speaker 2: and hont three hundred and sixty five days a year.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Here's your host, Jesse Sylvia.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Welcome to the Dynasty Sports Life. Jesse sphere here ready
- 0:22Speaker 3: to talk with you about the wonderful world of Dynasty
- 0:24Speaker 3: Fantasy sports. Where are we? Where are we? Where are we?
- 0:27Speaker 3: It is the end of July. That is you know
- 0:31Speaker 3: what time that is. I just finished my first basketball
- 0:35Speaker 3: draft of the year. That was the four Sport Diesel Draft.
- 0:38Speaker 3: We did our rookies. Now that's summer Summer league and
- 0:42Speaker 3: the draft are in the books and people are popping
- 0:45Speaker 3: all the way off. We even make it allowable in
- 0:47Speaker 3: this league to draft some of your some of your
- 0:51Speaker 3: international perspective draftees who didn't come out this year, which
- 0:55Speaker 3: kind of makes it an extra lot of fun. So
- 0:57Speaker 3: I think we're in that time of year now here
- 0:59Speaker 3: in late July that I will have drafts continuously going,
- 1:04Speaker 3: some sort of a slow draft going in one of
- 1:06Speaker 3: my browsers somewhere from now until not even kidding, probably
- 1:10Speaker 3: the middle of October. So it's really it is the
- 1:13Speaker 3: most wonderful time of the year in so many ways.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Today we're going back on the philosopher's stage because Marcus
- 1:21Speaker 3: is here, and we're going to talk about some of
- 1:24Speaker 3: the big questions, the big questions, maybe the biggest question
- 1:28Speaker 3: all of dynasty, which is what sort of a strategy
- 1:30Speaker 3: should you have to a startup and to an orphan
- 1:33Speaker 3: because it's just the jumping off point to so many
- 1:36Speaker 3: of the topics we love. So right after this, you
- 1:38Speaker 3: know him, you love him. It's our guy, Marcus. We're
- 1:46Speaker 3: talking dynasty again, and Marcus is back, my guy, Marcus,
- 1:50Speaker 3: ready to talk a little more of these blender topics
- 1:54Speaker 3: here in dynasty, the general, the philosophical. We're up on
- 1:58Speaker 3: Plato and Socrates stage here sitting in thrones in white robes,
- 2:03Speaker 3: ready to talk about dynasty sports. How you doing today, Marcus?
- 2:06Speaker 1: I am doing great. Jesse, thank you for having me again,
- 2:08Speaker 1: my man. I appreciate it.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I love having you on here. We've had some good
- 2:12Speaker 3: conversations and so we're gonna keep them going on some
- 2:16Speaker 3: of these really general things. But I guess first I'm
- 2:18Speaker 3: going to ask, well, we're checking in mid season on
- 2:20Speaker 3: your baseball teams. How's it going for you right now.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm happy to report that last night I beat Kevin
- 2:27Speaker 1: So that was always wonderful. Oh man, that was great.
- 2:30Speaker 1: That was Ray. No, we're doing pretty good, man. I'm
- 2:31Speaker 1: only in a couple so leading the league in the
- 2:34Speaker 1: Barry Barker League and then in the Diesel we're in
- 2:37Speaker 1: the top four currently, so still hold out strong to
- 2:40Speaker 1: make the playoffs. A little bit of a surprise that
- 2:42Speaker 1: we're in the top four. My co manager Mick runs
- 2:44Speaker 1: a tight ship and he knows what I'm drew. He
- 2:47Speaker 1: knows what he's doing. He gotta trust in your teammates.
- 2:50Speaker 3: No, you're killing it. Yeah, in the thirty team in
- 2:53Speaker 3: the Barry Baker League. You took that team over was
- 2:56Speaker 3: it last year? And it was a rough team. If
- 2:59Speaker 3: I were call at the time, it didn't look to
- 3:01Speaker 3: me like you're going to be continued soon. And now,
- 3:04Speaker 3: like you say, you're in playoff position. I think we're
- 3:06Speaker 3: tied in the standings or we just were.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 3:08Speaker 3: You could be ahead of me today for all I know.
- 3:10Speaker 3: But yeah, that's you're really killing it in that league.
- 3:13Speaker 3: And I thought it was going to be more of
- 3:15Speaker 3: a rebuild. So you know, that's The thing is, we
- 3:20Speaker 3: are contemplating today this whole question of what happens when
- 3:25Speaker 3: you set up a league, what happens when you take
- 3:27Speaker 3: over a team and you try to get to the
- 3:30Speaker 3: point of contention once you set it up. Frame a
- 3:32Speaker 3: little bit, because this was a topic that you had
- 3:36Speaker 3: and I love it. I love this discussion. But what
- 3:38Speaker 3: kind of inspired this topic for you or how would
- 3:40Speaker 3: you frame it?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah, So the idea behind this is that everybody experiences
- 3:45Speaker 1: at some point, whether you start to join dynasty leagues
- 3:48Speaker 1: or when you start to join multiple dynasty leagues, or
- 3:52Speaker 1: you're getting in on a startup, or you need to
- 3:54Speaker 1: replace someone. Right, there's always orphan teams out there every
- 3:57Speaker 1: year that commissioners are so excited to replace. Got this
- 4:00Speaker 1: idea because I just joined one of your leagues, the
- 4:04Speaker 1: Red Rocks Basketball League, and I took over an orphan
- 4:07Speaker 1: and I spent the last couple of weeks figuring out
- 4:10Speaker 1: the team identity, and I was like, man, this actually
- 4:12Speaker 1: something that everybody has to do at any point in
- 4:14Speaker 1: their fantasy careers or dynasty fantasy careers. So why not
- 4:19Speaker 1: talk about what that looks like.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and you I've never revealed this, but the team
- 4:25Speaker 3: you took over was by a certain national basketball media
- 4:28Speaker 3: member who recently went to the Atlanta Hawks and therefore
- 4:31Speaker 3: had to a band in the team, and he did
- 4:32Speaker 3: bring good job with it. He was a painful trader.
- 4:36Speaker 3: But you yourself are a national media celebrity. As I
- 4:40Speaker 3: understand it. Not only have you been on this show,
- 4:42Speaker 3: which obviously is the pinnacle of your media career, but
- 4:46Speaker 3: you've been on ESPN, You've been on Fox NFL. Do
- 4:49Speaker 3: you have wisdom to share with me from your media career?
- 4:52Speaker 1: Absolutely so, whenever to share a couple of bit of
- 4:55Speaker 1: those media appearances. I once was once highlighted on sports
- 5:00Speaker 1: during a Jets training camp where there was a silhouette
- 5:03Speaker 1: of me tapping up Tim Tebow on the sideline on
- 5:05Speaker 1: his birthday. Very easily identifiable as I was the only
- 5:09Speaker 1: person decked off from head to toeing Cowboys gear at
- 5:12Speaker 1: the Jets mini camp. So that was my first claim
- 5:15Speaker 1: to fame. And then I was on a Fox NFL
- 5:19Speaker 1: Sunday game for the Game of the Week. The one
- 5:22Speaker 1: thing that I will share with you, Jesse, is that
- 5:24Speaker 1: if you're ever caught on national television as one of
- 5:28Speaker 1: the one of two people on the screen. Make sure
- 5:30Speaker 1: you cover your mouth when you sneeze. So for those
- 5:33Speaker 1: of that I don't know, I was. My grandparents sent
- 5:36Speaker 1: me a voicemail afterwards telling me that they were so
- 5:39Speaker 1: proud of me because I saw me on TV and
- 5:41Speaker 1: that they raise such a good young man who covers
- 5:43Speaker 1: his mouth when he sneezes.
- 5:44Speaker 3: So see you in a moment of crisis. In a
- 5:47Speaker 3: moment of crisis, that's where your character is revealed. And
- 5:50Speaker 3: Marcus dog on it.
- 5:52Speaker 1: What you do when you think nobody's watching is when everyone.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Is exactly exactly yeah. So yeah, man, we're talking about
- 5:59Speaker 3: diynasty teams, and where do you want to start this?
- 6:02Speaker 3: You want to start talking about new dynasty teams, orphan teams?
- 6:05Speaker 1: What's your thought here? Let's start where everyone starts, right
- 6:09Speaker 1: when you're getting into that first dynasty league. I'm going
- 6:12Speaker 1: to actually hand this one back to you for a moment,
- 6:14Speaker 1: because you are known as the commissioner, but not everybody
- 6:17Speaker 1: booze you like they do. Goodell when you get up
- 6:19Speaker 1: for that draft. Maybe I will. Since I didn't get
- 6:22Speaker 1: a lottery pick. I didn't win the lottery in the
- 6:24Speaker 1: Red Rocks. But I want to approach this from two
- 6:27Speaker 1: different ways. One, when you're the commissioner, how are you
- 6:30Speaker 1: looking to set it up a little bit to make
- 6:32Speaker 1: sure that you're on the same page with all of
- 6:33Speaker 1: the participants. And then we'll transition over to the creation,
- 6:37Speaker 1: like when you're looking at building that how you're planning
- 6:40Speaker 1: your team build and what are those different tactics that
- 6:43Speaker 1: you can use before eventually talking about taking over orphans
- 6:47Speaker 1: and filling orphans with a really.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So the I guess as a commissioner that I am
- 6:53Speaker 3: the commissioner of our three sport league that I've talked
- 6:56Speaker 3: about a number of times on this on this feed,
- 6:59Speaker 3: and before that, the the what we call the OG
- 7:01Speaker 3: Dynasty Baseball League, the original Baseball League is in its
- 7:05Speaker 3: twelfth year three sports and it's eleventh year. And I
- 7:09Speaker 3: did not start out as the commissioner of those leagues.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I started out because both of these have spurned, have
- 7:15Speaker 3: emerged from the end this league universe, and at first
- 7:19Speaker 3: those guys were running it, and I was really annoying,
- 7:22Speaker 3: asking lots of questions and saying, what if this, what
- 7:25Speaker 3: are we going to do if this happens? What how
- 7:27Speaker 3: are we going to enforce this rule? And I would
- 7:29Speaker 3: think through the implications of a lot of things, and
- 7:33Speaker 3: especially when it dawned on me, because I'm just very analytical,
- 7:37Speaker 3: and when it dawned on me that something that had
- 7:40Speaker 3: been set up is going to lead to a contradiction
- 7:43Speaker 3: or it's going to lead to a problem down the line,
- 7:46Speaker 3: I would be adamant about bringing that up. And I
- 7:49Speaker 3: wasn't that annoying guy in the chat, I don't think.
- 7:52Speaker 3: But I would talk to the commissioner politely and I'd
- 7:55Speaker 3: be like, Okay, if we do this, though, if you
- 7:57Speaker 3: do the rule this way, it's going to end up
- 7:59Speaker 3: with X and not. I truly hope it wasn't for
- 8:02Speaker 3: the sake of my team, but it was just it
- 8:03Speaker 3: was something I kept doing but politely, and I had
- 8:06Speaker 3: a good relationship with those guys, and finally they were like,
- 8:10Speaker 3: you just be commissioner, man, we can't take it. Just
- 8:13Speaker 3: you've thought these things through, your heart's in the right
- 8:16Speaker 3: place here, and you obviously are very into it, so
- 8:19Speaker 3: just do it. And yeah, I joined a lot of
- 8:22Speaker 3: leagues where I was not the commissioner, but over time,
- 8:25Speaker 3: I think when commissioners left the leagues, people just were like, Jesse,
- 8:30Speaker 3: why don't you do it? And I'm the idiot who
- 8:32Speaker 3: keeps saying yes subsequently end up commissioning a lot. But
- 8:36Speaker 3: there have been few leagues that I've really had the
- 8:38Speaker 3: opportunity to set up, the main one being our four
- 8:40Speaker 3: spot Diesel league that dawns on me right off hand,
- 8:44Speaker 3: as a league that I started out designing the rules
- 8:47Speaker 3: for and really thought them through and took the parts
- 8:51Speaker 3: that I liked from other leagues, but still very You
- 8:55Speaker 3: really try to think about precedents. You really try to
- 8:57Speaker 3: think about if we start out in direction, what's going
- 9:01Speaker 3: to happen, what are the loopholes people are going to
- 9:04Speaker 3: try to exploit, what is actually going to be fun
- 9:06Speaker 3: to play? Or what have I seen abused in other
- 9:09Speaker 3: leagues when we've used them? So you just try to
- 9:11Speaker 3: take the good parts of the leagues that you've already
- 9:14Speaker 3: been in and you try to make sure that the
- 9:16Speaker 3: things that you find are stupid get eliminated. I'll give
- 9:20Speaker 3: you an example, and this isn't This is a little
- 9:23Speaker 3: bit mean because I'm criticizing myself here because I helped
- 9:26Speaker 3: The other leagues that I helped set up were the
- 9:28Speaker 3: Fantasy Hockey Life, The Tidy, and the Original Dynasty leagues,
- 9:32Speaker 3: primarily the original Dynasty, the Tidy. There was a couple
- 9:35Speaker 3: folks that came in, but something that I originally didn't mind,
- 9:40Speaker 3: and I guess there's one other hockey league. But one
- 9:43Speaker 3: of the things I really thought was a plan originally
- 9:47Speaker 3: was in Dynasty Hockey, and this happens across the sports.
- 9:51Speaker 3: When you have a guy who's eligible for the miners,
- 9:55Speaker 3: the ability to just move him up and down until
- 9:58Speaker 3: he passes that threshol was something that originally I thought, Okay, yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 3: that makes sense, let's just do that, and I found
- 10:07Speaker 3: that it created a game that I've not enjoyed as much.
- 10:12Speaker 3: When you have a limited number of minor slots and
- 10:16Speaker 3: you have the ability to move guys up and down
- 10:18Speaker 3: at will until they hit the rookie threshold, it creates
- 10:24Speaker 3: an environment where people will take guys who what they're
- 10:29Speaker 3: not good, but they're playing a little bit, and they
- 10:31Speaker 3: use their miners basically as an extended bench. And especially
- 10:36Speaker 3: in hockey, that bothered me because in baseball you can
- 10:40Speaker 3: do the same thing theoretically, but the thing is that
- 10:43Speaker 3: most days for baseball, you have a full roster of
- 10:46Speaker 3: your starters, so you might have your il issues and everything,
- 10:49Speaker 3: but it doesn't make sense, and there's just not enough
- 10:51Speaker 3: productive players to just pull up we're under one hundred
- 10:54Speaker 3: and thirty at bats or whatever to really make it happen.
- 10:57Speaker 3: But in hockey, you're just your maximum games played, and
- 11:01Speaker 3: it's so easy to do that with guys who were
- 11:04Speaker 3: under games play limits that it just changes the game.
- 11:07Speaker 3: So that is something that I didn't love or I
- 11:11Speaker 3: felt like I totally got why we did it. I
- 11:14Speaker 3: supported it when we started it, but as the play
- 11:18Speaker 3: went on, I was like, this is not as fun
- 11:20Speaker 3: to me. This is a perversion of how some of
- 11:23Speaker 3: this stuff ought to work. And it was a strategy
- 11:26Speaker 3: I exploited. But when we did for Sport and I
- 11:29Speaker 3: had a guy Thomas from Norway was always like, what
- 11:32Speaker 3: the heck are you doing with this? Why is this
- 11:34Speaker 3: like this? Once you call a guy up, he should
- 11:37Speaker 3: have to stay up forever? Was Thomas's opinion. I was like,
- 11:40Speaker 3: that's kind of the other extreme. But in for Sport
- 11:42Speaker 3: we set it up so that you can call a
- 11:45Speaker 3: guy up only two guys and two times in his career,
- 11:48Speaker 3: and after that, no you can't. And of course in
- 11:51Speaker 3: many of my leagues I also have set it up
- 11:52Speaker 3: so that you can't ever claim a guy in waivers
- 11:55Speaker 3: who is currently in the minors now guys who are
- 11:57Speaker 3: under the threshold but in the pros obviously, so you've
- 12:00Speaker 3: got to be able to pick those guys up, but
- 12:02Speaker 3: guys who are in the minders you can't pick up.
- 12:04Speaker 3: So I feel like that is one of the ways
- 12:07Speaker 3: that we have cured that problem. I like the gameplay
- 12:12Speaker 3: of doing it this way better and I think it's
- 12:14Speaker 3: probably more realistic, more realistic than the other way. But
- 12:19Speaker 3: I don't know, is that so that's just an example
- 12:21Speaker 3: of something one of the issues I faced as a commissioner.
- 12:24Speaker 3: But what do you think?
- 12:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that I wanted you to just start off
- 12:27Speaker 1: this way on purpose, because you got to know the rules, right.
- 12:31Speaker 1: The whole point about the Fantasy League is that you
- 12:33Speaker 1: want everyone to be on the same page and everyone
- 12:35Speaker 1: following the same set of directions, and it's okay to
- 12:39Speaker 1: fail from time to time, especially when you're establishing a league.
- 12:42Speaker 1: You hope that you have a really good group of people.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And that's what amendments are for, right, That's what voting
- 12:46Speaker 1: is for. And even in the Forest Park, we took
- 12:49Speaker 1: a really long time just to talk through things as
- 12:52Speaker 1: an entire group. Before we got the draft, you know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: everyone was like, just let's go. Jesse's time to draft,
- 12:58Speaker 1: and Jesse's like, no, I think we need to wait
- 13:00Speaker 1: another six months to make sure that we got all
- 13:02Speaker 1: the rules. And of course it worked out great, and
- 13:05Speaker 1: of course, were there some things that we voted on.
- 13:07Speaker 1: We've made a few changes. Did we identify a couple
- 13:10Speaker 1: gaps here and there, of course, But that's going to
- 13:13Speaker 1: happen with literally anything that you encounter in life. So
- 13:16Speaker 1: as long as you're approaching it positively and trying to
- 13:19Speaker 1: do it constructively, that's how leagues last as long as
- 13:22Speaker 1: they do. And that's why you have some that you've
- 13:24Speaker 1: been in for over ten years, because the group wants
- 13:26Speaker 1: them to be successful instead of everyone fighting over odds
- 13:29Speaker 1: and ends. I love that aspect of it. And to
- 13:31Speaker 1: tangent off of your example, the Tidy and the Diesel
- 13:36Speaker 1: are two very different leagues for that exact reason. And
- 13:39Speaker 1: I was able to do well in the Tidy the
- 13:40Speaker 1: last year because I filled my miners full of players
- 13:44Speaker 1: that I could move in and out to maximize gameplayed,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and you literally can't do that in the Diesel and
- 13:49Speaker 1: then with the restrictions and cap and penalties, you would
- 13:53Speaker 1: only harm yourself by filling in and ad dropping throughout
- 13:57Speaker 1: the course of a season. Give yourself that little buffer
- 13:59Speaker 1: at the end of the year for a playoff push.
- 14:01Speaker 1: If you need something in the diar, that's a next
- 14:04Speaker 1: year problem if you have to anything for the title, right.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But no, I love the complexity of it, and I
- 14:09Speaker 1: love that there's different ideas that you can implement amongst
- 14:13Speaker 1: different leagues, and if you want something different than what
- 14:15Speaker 1: your league is offering, it's okay to be in more
- 14:17Speaker 1: than one league, right. That's the joy of fantasy sports.
- 14:20Speaker 1: You could do multiple.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's okay to play different formats. It's totally okay.
- 14:25Speaker 3: So it's I'm not calling out those leaks. I'm part
- 14:29Speaker 3: of setting up those leagus and I don't hate that.
- 14:32Speaker 3: But given the choice of which way to play, I
- 14:34Speaker 3: think I've played that way. Not just in hockey. There's
- 14:37Speaker 3: baseball leagues m in like that, and there's plenty of
- 14:39Speaker 3: leagues 'm in like that, even basketball leagues like that
- 14:43Speaker 3: where you can just stream guys up and down, although
- 14:45Speaker 3: it's harder to do in basketball because there are a
- 14:47Speaker 3: fewer relevant rookies who can actually help you. But I've
- 14:51Speaker 3: played that, but I just find that the gameplay is
- 14:53Speaker 3: better the other way. I really like formats that value
- 14:58Speaker 3: draft picks, that value the development and maintenance of minor leaguers,
- 15:04Speaker 3: and I find like in baseball leagues where you can
- 15:06Speaker 3: stream guys up and down. I think that's part of
- 15:09Speaker 3: why when you listen to Dynasty Advice on a lot
- 15:12Speaker 3: of programs, you'll hear people really talk about proximity and
- 15:16Speaker 3: really value a guy who's about to come up, and
- 15:19Speaker 3: have very little value on a guy who is further away.
- 15:24Speaker 3: And that's because of this, That's because it's maximized for
- 15:28Speaker 3: the strategy of guys who can play for you. Right now,
- 15:31Speaker 3: Cooper Pratt is more valuable to people than I don't know,
- 15:35Speaker 3: Felm in Celston, and I don't think that's that doesn't
- 15:39Speaker 3: make sense to me. I've made some moves recently in
- 15:43Speaker 3: a baseball league that I've been in for Dynasty purposes,
- 15:46Speaker 3: and I can't believe some of the guys who are
- 15:48Speaker 3: freely available on waivers. But it's because there's little incentive
- 15:53Speaker 3: in this league to really emphasize your pros. So I've
- 15:58Speaker 3: picked up. I think I picked up Sebastian Walcott, Theo Gillen, Alfreido,
- 16:03Speaker 3: do you know Thomas White. I picked all these guys
- 16:07Speaker 3: up off waivers because other teams are not valuing what's
- 16:11Speaker 3: going on there, and it's a fairly shallow and frankly,
- 16:14Speaker 3: I think in this league you can either have those
- 16:17Speaker 3: spots dedicated to minor leaguers or to pros. So competing
- 16:21Speaker 3: teams just don't want to do it. But I don't
- 16:24Speaker 3: know that. I used to play board games back in
- 16:28Speaker 3: like the eighties, right like Avalon Hill War game board
- 16:32Speaker 3: game things, and I'd read their magazines and the big art.
- 16:36Speaker 3: The big argument people used to have in those days
- 16:38Speaker 3: was realism versus playability. Do you want a game that's
- 16:41Speaker 3: more realistic or do you want a game that offers
- 16:44Speaker 3: the more fun playing experience? And so it's always attention
- 16:48Speaker 3: that you're in.
- 16:50Speaker 1: On a side note, I was curious who actually had
- 16:53Speaker 1: found in Selston when you said that, So I looked
- 16:56Speaker 1: it up and it's you.
- 16:57Speaker 3: It's always me.
- 17:00Speaker 1: You have a billion minors.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Which which league are you talking about?
- 17:05Speaker 1: I was looking at the dieselague got eight hundreds.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that feeds right into our talk of strategy here, right.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Absolutely, so transitioning into that our strategy talk. So the
- 17:17Speaker 1: first thing that you gotta do rule number one of
- 17:20Speaker 1: everything when you're joining a dynasty league is you gotta
- 17:23Speaker 1: know the rules. Right, Every league operates differently. There's so
- 17:27Speaker 1: many different combinations of fun things, and I know that
- 17:30Speaker 1: you're a big promoter of fan tracks, and that league,
- 17:33Speaker 1: beyond all the other ones that I've ever seen, have
- 17:36Speaker 1: a crazy amount of different settings and scenarios that you
- 17:40Speaker 1: can do. Some of my friends, like real life friends,
- 17:43Speaker 1: we have a pretty good fantasy football league going. That's
- 17:46Speaker 1: all contract leagues on a different platform that has its
- 17:50Speaker 1: own unique situation of rules and settings and how we
- 17:53Speaker 1: operate throughout the off season with draft and free agency,
- 17:56Speaker 1: auction bidding, et cetera. Stuff like that practice squad players.
- 18:00Speaker 1: So getting to know the intimate details of the league
- 18:03Speaker 1: rules is super important because, as you said, if you're
- 18:05Speaker 1: not able to pick up minors throughout the entire year,
- 18:10Speaker 1: have you're gonna more heavily weigh draft picks in a
- 18:13Speaker 1: league like that where the only way you can get
- 18:15Speaker 1: minor draft picks or minor players is by having draft picks.
- 18:18Speaker 1: That's something that I didn't really anticipate when we started
- 18:21Speaker 1: the Diesel we traded everything away. At first, we were like, oh, whatever,
- 18:23Speaker 1: we'll figure it out. There's always pros on the block.
- 18:26Speaker 1: And then when the contract still started to happen, we're like, oh, man,
- 18:28Speaker 1: you know what draft picks are a little more valuable.
- 18:31Speaker 1: We originally intended see mac Jones to severe for fifteen
- 18:35Speaker 1: picks for no reason that helped build his minor league
- 18:38Speaker 1: baseball team.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 18:41Speaker 1: Remember that? Yeah? Of course you wouldn't. I'll remember it forever.
- 18:44Speaker 1: A bunch of nothing draft picks at the end of
- 18:46Speaker 1: a draft for a quarterback that was starting at the time,
- 18:49Speaker 1: and then it looked back going. We only used them
- 18:51Speaker 1: one week? Was that really worth all those like rounders?
- 18:54Speaker 1: I know, I know, I'll remember Jesse.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Is an elephant over the Yeah. And some people would
- 19:03Speaker 3: say that this is an idiosyncrasy that I'm exploiting in
- 19:07Speaker 3: a league and I'm setting up for advantage, and it's
- 19:10Speaker 3: something that I happen to like. But we did vote
- 19:12Speaker 3: when we set up to Diesel, we did a vote rama.
- 19:15Speaker 3: We voted on twenty two because I said, there's some
- 19:17Speaker 3: things I want here, and there's some things other things
- 19:21Speaker 3: that are really important, like head to head versus roto
- 19:23Speaker 3: in certain formats that I wanted buy in from everybody
- 19:26Speaker 3: on we took votes. There wasn't a question of dictator
- 19:30Speaker 3: Jesse coming in and doing one thing or the other.
- 19:32Speaker 3: But one thing that I have found was so rewarding
- 19:35Speaker 3: in the three sport and Original Dynasty leagues that I've
- 19:39Speaker 3: been in since the mid twenty tens is this league
- 19:44Speaker 3: format where there's no limit on the number of minor leaguers,
- 19:48Speaker 3: but you can't pick up minor leaguers and you can
- 19:51Speaker 3: only get them draft picks. And the reason why that
- 19:53Speaker 3: format is so valuable to me is if you don't
- 19:56Speaker 3: have it, draft picks are virtually valueless, and if you
- 20:00Speaker 3: have it, draft picks are absolute gold and they're worth acquiring.
- 20:04Speaker 3: And yeah, you're right. I have the deepest minor system
- 20:08Speaker 3: in this league. I have fifty three minor league players
- 20:10Speaker 3: for a thirty man pro roster, and it's because my
- 20:14Speaker 3: sense of it is I just.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Want to keep it.
- 20:17Speaker 3: It's a volume play. You got to get the upside,
- 20:19Speaker 3: and the way to do it is you have to
- 20:21Speaker 3: feel that you are going to be more efficient than
- 20:23Speaker 3: the market at drafting. And you're going to get yourself
- 20:26Speaker 3: more cuts at the more bites at the apple. And
- 20:28Speaker 3: that's that's kind of what my strategy is. And it
- 20:31Speaker 3: has led me to the bottom half of the league
- 20:33Speaker 3: every single year so far in baseball. And I'm zagging
- 20:36Speaker 3: when other people are zigging and hoping for the best.
- 20:39Speaker 3: But and I've sold off a lot of pro pieces
- 20:42Speaker 3: that would have helped me be better now. But I'm
- 20:46Speaker 3: playing the long game and I'm hoping that it's going
- 20:47Speaker 3: to work out.
- 20:49Speaker 1: So to transition, right, how you want to construct your team,
- 20:53Speaker 1: especially when you're starting out, what's your plan of attack?
- 20:56Speaker 1: A lot of those questions can't be answered until you
- 20:58Speaker 1: actually figure out who's going to be there, which is
- 21:01Speaker 1: your initial startup draft, right, So best practices for startup
- 21:05Speaker 1: draft do what you feel kind of a thing. There's
- 21:08Speaker 1: not like a magic sauce. There's only a couple of
- 21:10Speaker 1: people that are legends. But from you, Jesse, what do
- 21:13Speaker 1: you think what are your best practices when you are
- 21:15Speaker 1: starting off and constructing your team through that initial league draft?
- 21:21Speaker 3: You mentioned knowing the settings, and it's almost just it's
- 21:24Speaker 3: almost just a cliche at this point to say no,
- 21:27Speaker 3: your settings, but it is it can't be overemphasized because
- 21:32Speaker 3: any difference in scoring, any difference in anything, is going
- 21:36Speaker 3: to amplify over time any part of the settings. And
- 21:41Speaker 3: I see a lot of people go into the drafts
- 21:43Speaker 3: and say, oh, this is an OBP league, all right,
- 21:45Speaker 3: I'll just value a little bit more guys who have OVP.
- 21:49Speaker 3: That's in my mind. That's a mistake in my mind,
- 21:52Speaker 3: that is going to come back to Honya. Every time
- 21:55Speaker 3: I've done a startup dynasty draft, I have full on
- 21:59Speaker 3: tried to create projections for everything, and I've weighed them
- 22:02Speaker 3: by future aging. I've weighed them by production, but then
- 22:08Speaker 3: also by rookies that I think because it's I've not
- 22:11Speaker 3: cracked any kind of a formula that I feel comfortable
- 22:13Speaker 3: with on really projecting rookies into the future. The closest
- 22:17Speaker 3: thing I got is Victor's Ranks and Fantasy Hockey life,
- 22:20Speaker 3: and I do rely on those for the hockey side
- 22:22Speaker 3: of things. But and I people are like, we just
- 22:25Speaker 3: have a general sense and make tears and feel good
- 22:28Speaker 3: about that. I don't feel that way. I know, I
- 22:32Speaker 3: get why people talk about tears, and I get that
- 22:35Speaker 3: we cannot have exact precision, but maybe I'm just too
- 22:40Speaker 3: mathy because I still project the numbers out and I
- 22:47Speaker 3: but I make them fuzzy in my mind. Right, it's
- 22:49Speaker 3: not an absolute rule that this guy has to be
- 22:51Speaker 3: taken over that guy because I have him projected to
- 22:55Speaker 3: give me more points in the long term. I'm going
- 22:59Speaker 3: to but I'm going to try to make it more precise.
- 23:02Speaker 3: I'm not going to say that five guys are the same.
- 23:05Speaker 3: When I really squint and look at it, one guy
- 23:08Speaker 3: on that tier supposedly is five percent above the bottom
- 23:12Speaker 3: one in that tier, and it's five four three two one.
- 23:14Speaker 3: It's not exact, and I want to keep that in mind.
- 23:18Speaker 3: You look for some natural drops in the scoring, but
- 23:22Speaker 3: it's still scoring to me. So that's a preference thing
- 23:25Speaker 3: on my part. But I would never enter a Dynasty
- 23:28Speaker 3: draft without really projecting out what I think people's numbers
- 23:32Speaker 3: are going to look like with the settings of the league.
- 23:36Speaker 1: How about you? Yeah, we so recently. The most recent
- 23:40Speaker 1: one that I've done for startup would be the four Sport.
- 23:43Speaker 1: That was the last startup league that I was a
- 23:45Speaker 1: part of. Most of the time, I take over orphans
- 23:47Speaker 1: from people like you that asked me I played with
- 23:50Speaker 1: or like we need someone right now, like one of
- 23:53Speaker 1: those Lutch Marcus's clutch for those h I'm always down
- 23:56Speaker 1: to try, and I'm always down to give it my all, right,
- 23:58Speaker 1: And we'll get into that in a little bit. But
- 24:00Speaker 1: I always feel the best policy for starting a new
- 24:03Speaker 1: league is to try to just draft the best player available,
- 24:06Speaker 1: and you can include that by their rout like just
- 24:10Speaker 1: the best value that you have. I know that kind
- 24:12Speaker 1: of goes in along, that kind of falls into the
- 24:15Speaker 1: line with like your own tiers, but you also have
- 24:18Speaker 1: your own sentimental value towards players or teams even of course,
- 24:23Speaker 1: like I prefer not to draft Cowboys players because I
- 24:26Speaker 1: have to watch them lose. I don't want to players
- 24:29Speaker 1: do bad, so at least I can always win win somehow,
- 24:32Speaker 1: right if they suck in the game, but they win
- 24:34Speaker 1: the game, Like, at least they won the game, right,
- 24:36Speaker 1: so I can always enjoy something. So I tried never
- 24:39Speaker 1: to draft Cowboys players as like a rule of thumb
- 24:42Speaker 1: for me personally. But the goal is always just to
- 24:45Speaker 1: try to draft the best team that you possibly can,
- 24:48Speaker 1: and you have to be able to adjust on the fly.
- 24:51Speaker 1: You might have a list of five players that you
- 24:53Speaker 1: want you're like, I'm drafting one of these next five guys,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and then those five guys go right in a row
- 24:58Speaker 1: right before you, and you're like, I would have never
- 24:59Speaker 1: thought all five of them were going to go. There's
- 25:02Speaker 1: no need to panic right the way that we developed
- 25:04Speaker 1: at least the dynasty leagues. I know, redraft you usually
- 25:06Speaker 1: have a ticker, so maybe a little bit more stressful
- 25:09Speaker 1: in a redraft situation, but a dynasty we typically allow
- 25:12Speaker 1: longer draft periods, so you have at least a couple
- 25:15Speaker 1: of hours at minimum to determine who you want to
- 25:18Speaker 1: add to the team, plenty of time to get your
- 25:20Speaker 1: stress out of the way, do a little wose action
- 25:23Speaker 1: and relax, and then make an educated decision. But even
- 25:27Speaker 1: in like our foresport, for example, you weren't allowed to
- 25:30Speaker 1: draft miners and pros at the same time, so we
- 25:33Speaker 1: didn't have to worry about who's going to be available
- 25:36Speaker 1: for the miners. Right, we have no idea that's ten
- 25:38Speaker 1: days away, so we'll figure that out. Let's just worry
- 25:41Speaker 1: about drafting the best team that we can with the
- 25:42Speaker 1: pros that are available, and then we'll worry about the
- 25:45Speaker 1: best available come the next time. So I'm a big
- 25:48Speaker 1: proponent and best available, even if it doesn't always meet
- 25:51Speaker 1: the roster construction, because if you're drafting someone who's valuable
- 25:55Speaker 1: and you already have that spot already covered, that means
- 25:59Speaker 1: they likely have pretty good trade value and you might
- 26:01Speaker 1: be able to acquire someone who you weren't able to
- 26:03Speaker 1: early in the draft from someone who didn't get what
- 26:05Speaker 1: they were looking for. So that's my philosophy at least,
- 26:09Speaker 1: is just try to take the best value that you
- 26:11Speaker 1: can at every pick, regardless of position. Unfortunately, it doesn't
- 26:15Speaker 1: always work out, but that's the goal. That's the goal.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Yeah, And some of the things, some of the safeguards
- 26:20Speaker 3: I also put in because okay, now we can talk
- 26:23Speaker 3: about maybe extreme strategies in your startup. There's that guy
- 26:26Speaker 3: who comes in and he's going to draft Lebron James
- 26:30Speaker 3: in the second round, maybe a Lebron James three years ago.
- 26:33Speaker 3: But regardless, people who are ready to age out but
- 26:38Speaker 3: are producing a highlight maybe Steph Curry would be a
- 26:41Speaker 3: better example. They're willing to do that. And you see
- 26:45Speaker 3: somebody after a few rounds and you're like, that person
- 26:49Speaker 3: is trying to win now and they just don't care
- 26:51Speaker 3: about the future. What my personal pet peeve is to
- 26:55Speaker 3: have a strategy where you were going to try to
- 26:59Speaker 3: win the draft, You're going to try to win the
- 27:01Speaker 3: league in year one, and you're just assuming it's going
- 27:03Speaker 3: to collapse and if the league lasts, because I get it,
- 27:08Speaker 3: I get that happens a lot. But part of what
- 27:12Speaker 3: happens I think out of that is it's a self
- 27:14Speaker 3: fulfilling prophecy because the people who do that sometimes drop
- 27:19Speaker 3: out after year three, even if the league's still going,
- 27:22Speaker 3: because they've got their championship. They've taken their cut and
- 27:24Speaker 3: they're like, this doesn't interest me anymore. My team's going
- 27:27Speaker 3: to suck now, and that really bothers me. And there's
- 27:30Speaker 3: also the player who will just completely punt on anything
- 27:35Speaker 3: now and will want to take a minor leaguer, take
- 27:38Speaker 3: Keesus my day in the first round and refuses to
- 27:42Speaker 3: draft anything that's experienced. And I get pursuing extreme strategies.
- 27:47Speaker 3: We just talked about my baseball team. I pursued young guys.
- 27:51Speaker 3: I've really tried to emphasize trading productive major leaguers for
- 27:56Speaker 3: multiple future picks and really building up for the future.
- 27:59Speaker 3: But one of the other things, like you said, we
- 28:00Speaker 3: separated pro in minor league drafts, and we set a
- 28:04Speaker 3: minimum for the number of players per sport that you
- 28:08Speaker 3: had to take in the minor league draft. Among the
- 28:10Speaker 3: four sports. You weren't allowed to just take forty baseball
- 28:13Speaker 3: players or however many rounds thirty baseball players are how
- 28:17Speaker 3: many of the rounds you had to take. There's a
- 28:19Speaker 3: range of the number of players you could take for
- 28:21Speaker 3: each of the four sports, and you had to do
- 28:23Speaker 3: them all because while I get that people are going
- 28:27Speaker 3: to punt one sport or another, we didn't. I didn't
- 28:29Speaker 3: want to come in and have some teams just like
- 28:32Speaker 3: I'm not even going to roster players from the sport.
- 28:34Speaker 3: I'm going to get all of my players in my
- 28:37Speaker 3: last ten rounds. I'm going to take players from this
- 28:39Speaker 3: sport and I just don't care. And there's you just
- 28:43Speaker 3: want there to be a reasonable range. You don't want
- 28:45Speaker 3: people who are like, I'm just gonna punt this sport
- 28:47Speaker 3: forever because I just don't care about it and I
- 28:49Speaker 3: don't know about it. And for a multi sport league,
- 28:52Speaker 3: I feel like that's something you want to build in somehow,
- 28:55Speaker 3: and you want to build in that teams are at
- 28:58Speaker 3: least going to have a roster otherwise it's gonna Partly
- 29:03Speaker 3: you're saving people from your themselves, because I think some
- 29:06Speaker 3: people don't know what the'm getting they're getting themselves into,
- 29:09Speaker 3: and they pursue these strategies and then they figure out
- 29:11Speaker 3: in a couple of years, oh man, this team is
- 29:14Speaker 3: eternally screwed because of the way I did it. But
- 29:17Speaker 3: also it's just I find it to be more fun
- 29:19Speaker 3: gameplay when people are starting out with at least a
- 29:22Speaker 3: point of some hope in different areas and not such
- 29:26Speaker 3: an extreme strategy. It's just no fun anymore.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with you. I also don't think that
- 29:31Speaker 1: it's a viable option to go into a new league
- 29:33Speaker 1: startup and be like, I'm taking the first year right
- 29:36Speaker 1: when you go into the draft that way, automatically, you've
- 29:40Speaker 1: already withered away most of the excitement of joining a
- 29:44Speaker 1: new league. A lot of times when you see those
- 29:47Speaker 1: people like what you said, you're just going to draft
- 29:49Speaker 1: for the future and all I saw a Reddit post
- 29:52Speaker 1: for some person trade away his entire startup team and
- 29:55Speaker 1: got all twenty twenty five draft picks and they didn't
- 30:00Speaker 1: win a single game, And I was like, what did
- 30:03Speaker 1: you expect that doesn't work that way and you're not
- 30:05Speaker 1: going to have a fun time. You might feel great
- 30:08Speaker 1: doing a rookie draft because you got a lot of
- 30:10Speaker 1: picks or something there, but at the end of the day,
- 30:13Speaker 1: you spend a whole season losing and not doing anything.
- 30:16Speaker 1: And then you spend another whole season, most likely losing
- 30:19Speaker 1: and not doing anything. And after two years of losing,
- 30:24Speaker 1: how excited are you feeling about moving forward with this right?
- 30:27Speaker 1: Or if you sacrifice future draft picks to unfortunately fail
- 30:33Speaker 1: in the moment like now, you're potentially sending yourself back
- 30:37Speaker 1: for severals And that's when we start to see that
- 30:40Speaker 1: large turnover, especially in the beginning of leagues, and I
- 30:42Speaker 1: think that's a big reason why some leagues fizzle out
- 30:44Speaker 1: so quickly. So at least approaching it with the rules
- 30:47Speaker 1: that you did with the for sport, it's okay to
- 30:51Speaker 1: realize that in the season, hey this isn't as strong
- 30:54Speaker 1: as I thought it might be. Let's make some changes.
- 30:56Speaker 1: But if you go into it thinking I'm tanking for sure,
- 31:00Speaker 1: then you're going to have a lot it's gonna be
- 31:01Speaker 1: a lot harder to keep those types of owners engaged
- 31:04Speaker 1: easier in the four sport because you've got four teams.
- 31:06Speaker 1: But for any other sport where you just do one,
- 31:09Speaker 1: it's a lot harder to manage that one a year
- 31:11Speaker 1: over year.
- 31:12Speaker 3: And I think it depends where you have got your
- 31:17Speaker 3: experience or your background before you start playing Dynasty. Where
- 31:22Speaker 3: were you hearing about Dynasty from? Was it podcasts? And
- 31:25Speaker 3: if it was podcasts, was it football? And if it
- 31:28Speaker 3: was football? Is the closest you can come to truly
- 31:32Speaker 3: tanking your one and then getting better Because you need
- 31:36Speaker 3: a limited number of players to break out. It's probably
- 31:40Speaker 3: still not going to work. It's probably still going to fail.
- 31:43Speaker 3: But in a baseball team, it's hopeless. Don't even touch
- 31:46Speaker 3: that because the players you get in the draft are
- 31:50Speaker 3: there's such a wide variance of what you can get
- 31:53Speaker 3: in a rookie draft, and it takes so long for
- 31:55Speaker 3: them to contribute. You're burying yourself forever just about do
- 31:59Speaker 3: you want who? Do you want to pay up in
- 32:01Speaker 3: year one for Hazus Moyday in round five and say
- 32:04Speaker 3: he's probably up next year, He's not going to contribute
- 32:07Speaker 3: this year, But I'm going to pay up for Kate
- 32:09Speaker 3: Anderson and Jesus moydey and I'm going to believe for
- 32:12Speaker 3: the future. Once upon a time, you might've got Paul
- 32:14Speaker 3: schemes that way and it might have worked out. But baseball,
- 32:17Speaker 3: the rosters are so deep. You have to have so
- 32:20Speaker 3: much depth. That's just it's suicidal. From a winning perspective, I.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Would say hockey follows that same kind of principle. Those
- 32:27Speaker 1: are the two sportsports, really, and we're starting to see that.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And not everyone has access to see the results of
- 32:32Speaker 1: the Diesel League, but over the past few years you're
- 32:35Speaker 1: starting to see a settling of those players that were
- 32:38Speaker 1: like I'm building for the future. They are still down
- 32:40Speaker 1: at the bottom, unfortunately, and there's a pretty clear division.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Baseball a little different because baseball's got some randomness built
- 32:46Speaker 1: in with categories. But for the points of hockey, it's
- 32:49Speaker 1: you start to see a pretty clear division. Although one
- 32:51Speaker 1: of our owners just took a huge step last week
- 32:54Speaker 1: and just trading for everyone in hockey. He's trying to
- 32:56Speaker 1: make a big deal.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Yeah, he's Yeah, we do have people making moves into
- 33:00Speaker 3: trade value out from other leaks to do it. I
- 33:02Speaker 3: felt like coming in hockey is dangerous because I brought
- 33:06Speaker 3: in a bunch of hockey ringers from the FHL universe,
- 33:09Speaker 3: like Victor and Tony and a number of people Dave
- 33:13Speaker 3: who did hockey and I knew would be able to
- 33:16Speaker 3: do these other things, Bruce, but hockey was dangerous. But
- 33:20Speaker 3: I felt basketball might be the sweet spot of there
- 33:24Speaker 3: aren't as many people. There's a lot of people who
- 33:26Speaker 3: know baseball well, a lot of people who know football well.
- 33:29Speaker 3: And then we had some people come in who specifically
- 33:32Speaker 3: knew hockey well. It was like basketball and hockey are
- 33:34Speaker 3: probably my better shots for the near term, and then
- 33:38Speaker 3: I'm going to have to build for the long haul
- 33:39Speaker 3: and the other ones. And that's what I did. And
- 33:41Speaker 3: I won hockey once, I won basketball once, so it's worked.
- 33:45Speaker 3: But oh Marcus, I keep dinging you man, It's all good,
- 33:50Speaker 3: It's all good. That was a lucky I wanted on
- 33:53Speaker 3: a tiebreaker, right. I don't want basketball on a tiebreaker
- 33:55Speaker 3: this year?
- 33:56Speaker 1: Oh man, No, you won by just like a maybe
- 33:59Speaker 1: even the finals. But I'm re beat me. I don't
- 34:01Speaker 1: know what happened. My fan tracks. Leagues didn't save their
- 34:04Speaker 1: lineups and I missed a whole day and then unfortunately,
- 34:07Speaker 1: I just couldn't take the loss. And I had to
- 34:09Speaker 1: go and do all the math and realize that we
- 34:11Speaker 1: would have won. Actually but yeah no, but.
- 34:20Speaker 3: But yeah, long story short, tanking year one is that's
- 34:24Speaker 3: a fraud strategy, and and like you said, it can
- 34:27Speaker 3: lead to an activity because if you're like, I'm tanking
- 34:30Speaker 3: this whole year, what does it even matter? And then
- 34:32Speaker 3: it gets to be month four of the season and
- 34:36Speaker 3: it's still a month from the playoffs and it's hard
- 34:39Speaker 3: to even set your heart to set a lineup. I've
- 34:41Speaker 3: been there, but there's some people who've been there for
- 34:44Speaker 3: five years straight and it's painful. And then those people
- 34:47Speaker 3: tend to leave the league, not because they're mad, but
- 34:50Speaker 3: because they're indifferent. Like I said, the opposite of love
- 34:54Speaker 3: for the league is indifference towards the league, and that's
- 34:56Speaker 3: what leads to people leaving, not them trying to tank
- 34:59Speaker 3: to get some advantage. But where does that leave us?
- 35:02Speaker 1: Marcus?
- 35:02Speaker 3: And before that, before we go there, why don't we
- 35:05Speaker 3: take a break.
- 35:05Speaker 4: We'll come back on that point back with Marcus.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Marcus, we just were at the heat depth of the
- 35:26Speaker 3: universe where everybody is bored and quitting the league, and
- 35:30Speaker 3: I'll let you take it from there, all right.
- 35:32Speaker 1: I want to say one more thing before we go
- 35:34Speaker 1: into the next part. Is I think that how you
- 35:37Speaker 1: have it in a couple of different leagues where you
- 35:39Speaker 1: have to actually compete for your draft position as teams
- 35:42Speaker 1: that didn't make the playoffs, really does help curb some
- 35:45Speaker 1: of the tanking because you still have to provide a
- 35:47Speaker 1: competitive lineup even if you tank, and then they're developed
- 35:51Speaker 1: taking strategies while also being competitive, so that actually keeps
- 35:54Speaker 1: the owners involved. I mean, I love that in the
- 35:57Speaker 1: diesel and in the tidies specifically, because you don't want
- 35:59Speaker 1: to get rallied. You also want good picks. But I'll
- 36:02Speaker 1: tell you what, man, I'm made to comment and read
- 36:03Speaker 1: about this on a fantasy football form where people were
- 36:05Speaker 1: complaining about tanking teams just never starting their lineups, and
- 36:09Speaker 1: I was like, why don't you just create a playoffs? Man,
- 36:12Speaker 1: I must have got one hundred bad karma on people
- 36:14Speaker 1: down voting me what they were like, this is the
- 36:17Speaker 1: dumbest idea ever. I was like, clearly, no one's ever
- 36:19Speaker 1: tried this before because it works amazing. So for the
- 36:22Speaker 1: people that are hearing this for the first time, I
- 36:24Speaker 1: would highly recommend exploring some of those different options instead.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Of max points for football or just worst record. Having
- 36:33Speaker 1: a competitive tournament for tankers or for the worst teams
- 36:37Speaker 1: in the league really does incentivize more trading and acquiring
- 36:41Speaker 1: some competitive pieces instead of just trading everyone. So think
- 36:45Speaker 1: about it, food for thought, and that would prevent people
- 36:48Speaker 1: from leaving the league, which now we can transition to
- 36:51Speaker 1: is it's inevitable. Everybody's had to do it in every
- 36:54Speaker 1: single dynasty league or even redraft leagues. Is you got
- 36:58Speaker 1: to fill teams, right, you gotta fill orphans. And I'm
- 37:02Speaker 1: going to vollow to you here from the commissioner aspect,
- 37:04Speaker 1: what's some of those important key factors for you when
- 37:06Speaker 1: you're trying to fill them besides just messaging me on the.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Side as a commissioner, the hardest thing keeping a dynasty
- 37:14Speaker 3: league going is to be able to tap into people
- 37:19Speaker 3: who can come in because it is natural people age.
- 37:23Speaker 3: If you've got eighteen teams, you just can't expect the
- 37:26Speaker 3: same eighteen people. That's a pipe dream. That's the seventy
- 37:29Speaker 3: fifth wedding anniversary. It is just it's not going to happen.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Fifty percent of marriages and in divorce. I don't know
- 37:34Speaker 3: if that's true.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Anymore.
- 37:35Speaker 3: But that's what they always used to say. And a
- 37:37Speaker 3: certain percentage of people are eventually going to leave the
- 37:41Speaker 3: league because of life changes, because of all kinds. That's
- 37:44Speaker 3: why I'm very skeptical to bring in a lot of
- 37:47Speaker 3: people who are like in college, because their life is
- 37:50Speaker 3: going to change in ways in the next five years
- 37:52Speaker 3: that they don't understand yet, and they're going to be busy,
- 37:55Speaker 3: probably in ways they don't understand yet. But the bottom
- 37:59Speaker 3: line is, if you are a commissioner, you better have
- 38:02Speaker 3: access to a pipeline of talent, of people who are
- 38:06Speaker 3: willing to go. I've had a couple of leagues in
- 38:08Speaker 3: basketball where I just can't find people, and one of
- 38:12Speaker 3: them it's and the problem is when you're the commissioner,
- 38:15Speaker 3: everybody's kind of just kind of sits back on their
- 38:17Speaker 3: hands and there's like, look, commissioner will come up with something.
- 38:20Speaker 3: And one league I finally just I was like, look,
- 38:25Speaker 3: you guys, send me out. I have to beg two
- 38:27Speaker 3: people every off season to join this league. I can't
- 38:29Speaker 3: do it anymore. I've run out of friends. And then
- 38:32Speaker 3: in another one last year, the Gary Payton League, which
- 38:36Speaker 3: certain people on this certain people in this podcast had
- 38:38Speaker 3: to leave, although I understand totally why.
- 38:41Speaker 1: But.
- 38:43Speaker 3: It's about time. Yeah, but no, it totally, I totally
- 38:47Speaker 3: get it. Not every Roto is not everybody's cup of tea.
- 38:49Speaker 3: And this is a twenty team roto that was founded.
- 38:53Speaker 3: I think we're in year twelve of that one too,
- 38:55Speaker 3: something like that. But every year I was having to
- 38:59Speaker 3: come up with people. The league is half my friends
- 39:01Speaker 3: now because it was abandoned by the commissioner and they
- 39:05Speaker 3: just kind of said, peace out, Jesse, why don't you
- 39:08Speaker 3: do this. You know what to do. Just enforce the Steppian.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Rule and you'll be fine. This will be easy.
- 39:12Speaker 3: I'm like, what, But I've been running it for the
- 39:17Speaker 3: majority of its existence now, and I pulled in basically
- 39:20Speaker 3: all my friends I've got. I think I found you
- 39:22Speaker 3: when I went out and went on a discord. I
- 39:24Speaker 3: was just going out to random discords and begging people
- 39:27Speaker 3: to join, mostly not getting anything, tweeting out, getting fantasy
- 39:31Speaker 3: basketball people to retweet me to see if they could
- 39:33Speaker 3: come up with anybody. And finally last year we had
- 39:36Speaker 3: to collapse that twenty team league into sixteen teams because
- 39:40Speaker 3: we were down like six people. I was like, look, guys,
- 39:43Speaker 3: we're either going to do this or we're going to
- 39:45Speaker 3: fold the league because I just can't. I don't have
- 39:47Speaker 3: this many people to come back, and that's so hard. Luckily,
- 39:51Speaker 3: in the Diesel and in the ind this league, in
- 39:53Speaker 3: the in this league, Dynasties, I've always been able. I've
- 39:57Speaker 3: had a good pipeline of people, guys like you, Marcus,
- 40:01Speaker 3: people who I found because of this podcast and because
- 40:03Speaker 3: of Fantasy Hockey Life. Of course, we got a lot
- 40:05Speaker 3: of people who come in over on that side. That's
- 40:08Speaker 3: the most important thing is to be able to have
- 40:10Speaker 3: access to good people who are willing to step in
- 40:12Speaker 3: and take on orphans, which is not the easiest thing
- 40:15Speaker 3: in the world.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Marcus, No, it is not so transition right, Honestly, my bad.
- 40:20Speaker 1: I had to leave. I can't do Rhode man. I
- 40:22Speaker 1: realized that at that moment. I gave it my night,
- 40:27Speaker 1: even brought it up, but I was going to pay it.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Maybe the point of that, though, is you can bring
- 40:32Speaker 3: in good people, but it doesn't mean that those people
- 40:35Speaker 3: are going to love the format of the league. So
- 40:38Speaker 3: it's not like you bring in good people and some
- 40:40Speaker 3: of them turn out to be turds and they leave.
- 40:42Speaker 3: Is you bring in people. But when you're choosing a league,
- 40:46Speaker 3: you're also choosy about it. Right, you join the league
- 40:48Speaker 3: that you like, you like the format, you like the
- 40:50Speaker 3: people you get into it. Not everybody got into that
- 40:54Speaker 3: league and loved it, so it may even made it
- 40:56Speaker 3: harder to recruit because you would lose people who came in.
- 40:59Speaker 3: But anyway, I'm sorry, but go on.
- 41:01Speaker 1: No no apologies, and said I was gonna bring it
- 41:03Speaker 1: up anyways, because it's okay to leave a league. Everybody
- 41:06Speaker 1: does it at some point or another, and you just
- 41:08Speaker 1: have to make the best decision for you. Every year
- 41:11Speaker 1: and every league you're replacing hopefully no one, but you're
- 41:14Speaker 1: likely going to be replacing one person, if not more.
- 41:17Speaker 1: So it's pretty common and people try new things and
- 41:20Speaker 1: they realize they don't like them. And that's one of
- 41:22Speaker 1: the cool things about fantasy too, is that you have
- 41:24Speaker 1: that freedom to do that. Of course, you, like Jesse said,
- 41:27Speaker 1: you don't want to be a turn about it. I
- 41:29Speaker 1: knew that like seventy five percent of the way through
- 41:32Speaker 1: that league and the Gary Payton that I didn't want
- 41:34Speaker 1: to return because Rodo wasn't exciting. I was just setting
- 41:38Speaker 1: a lineup every day and I didn't feel anything about it.
- 41:40Speaker 1: There was no matchups. It was just dude, did I
- 41:43Speaker 1: move up bus bot cool? Did I move down his bottles?
- 41:45Speaker 1: A dang? And that was just it for me. So
- 41:47Speaker 1: I didn't like it, but I didn't go out there
- 41:49Speaker 1: and trade away everything because I knew the respectful thing
- 41:51Speaker 1: to do is to manage what you have, work some
- 41:54Speaker 1: free agency if you can, and then leave the next
- 41:56Speaker 1: person in the right position. Unfortunately, not everybody does that.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Orphans can be harder to fill in some cases than others.
- 42:03Speaker 1: But when you come in and fill an orphan, I've
- 42:05Speaker 1: been lucky enough to fill in. I think this is
- 42:07Speaker 1: my third or fourth team with your league's Jesse, and
- 42:10Speaker 1: this one is definitely the most in depth of all
- 42:13Speaker 1: of them when I'm trying to figure out what's going on,
- 42:15Speaker 1: and that's what I love the most. So I'm very excited.
- 42:18Speaker 1: But the main thing that you got to do and
- 42:20Speaker 1: you start that orphan is the same thing that you
- 42:22Speaker 1: have to apply. Rule number one when you are taking
- 42:25Speaker 1: on a dynasty startup is you got to know the rules.
- 42:28Speaker 1: No matter how many times Craig sends you dms and
- 42:30Speaker 1: trade offers, you got to make sure that you know
- 42:33Speaker 1: the rules inside and out, we're making decisions on what
- 42:37Speaker 1: you're going to be doing. One thing Jesse made a
- 42:39Speaker 1: comment about was when I joined the thirty team baseball league,
- 42:42Speaker 1: the Barry Parker League, I didn't know a whole lot
- 42:46Speaker 1: about baseball. I did it to learn more so that
- 42:48Speaker 1: way I could be more effective to help my co
- 42:51Speaker 1: managers and the force part. And I used to love
- 42:54Speaker 1: baseball back in like the early two thousands, so this
- 42:56Speaker 1: was a way to reconnect to baseball from my childhood.
- 42:59Speaker 1: So I went into it. I read the rules one
- 43:02Speaker 1: hundred times because there were so many, and I thought
- 43:05Speaker 1: I was going to do a good job. And I
- 43:06Speaker 1: was like, this looks like a great opportunity to tank,
- 43:10Speaker 1: and different from a startup. When you're taking over a
- 43:14Speaker 1: league that's already established, you have the ability to make
- 43:17Speaker 1: some more informed decisions. And there was also some rules
- 43:21Speaker 1: in place regarding how long you can keep players for
- 43:23Speaker 1: It's not forever, so trading them has more value. But
- 43:28Speaker 1: unfortunately I didn't understand the rules as well as I
- 43:30Speaker 1: thought I did, and I got taken advantage of in
- 43:32Speaker 1: a couple of trades. So you'll live and you'll learn.
- 43:34Speaker 1: But after that first year, Jesse made a comment about
- 43:37Speaker 1: how I sucked the first year and turned it around.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Getting a better understanding of the people that you're playing
- 43:42Speaker 1: with and getting a better understanding of the rules and
- 43:45Speaker 1: how the league operates, you can make those decisions and
- 43:48Speaker 1: when it's time to turn it around. So on that one,
- 43:50Speaker 1: I chose to tank from day one, after getting some
- 43:54Speaker 1: help from AI and then putting my team and others
- 43:56Speaker 1: and figuring out, hey, do I have a competitive chance
- 43:58Speaker 1: and it's like that eight ball and it says absolutely not, unfortunately,
- 44:02Speaker 1: So it's makes some moves and then you try to
- 44:05Speaker 1: make the best decisions that you can to remain somewhat
- 44:07Speaker 1: competitive without having to take ten years. And we were
- 44:10Speaker 1: able to flip it around from the worst record and
- 44:13Speaker 1: maybe in league history to we made the playoffs the
- 44:15Speaker 1: second year. So it really depends on what you want
- 44:18Speaker 1: to do and then try to put yourself in the
- 44:20Speaker 1: position to accomplish those goals. And from an orphan perspective,
- 44:25Speaker 1: if I'm going to join a league, I'm going to
- 44:28Speaker 1: come up with my plan of action from those first
- 44:32Speaker 1: couple of months once I join it, what's available, and
- 44:35Speaker 1: then I'm set a goal if i'm going to be
- 44:37Speaker 1: in a rebuild or a retool, I'm going to put
- 44:39Speaker 1: a time frame on it of I'm only going to
- 44:41Speaker 1: do this for two years, and then I need to
- 44:43Speaker 1: be competitive so I don't lose team. Two years is
- 44:46Speaker 1: the maxi amount of time that I'll ever give to
- 44:47Speaker 1: a rebuild before I'm going to just start buying some
- 44:50Speaker 1: competitive pieces and start pushing the needle. Then I'll have
- 44:53Speaker 1: to be more active and start putting myself in a
- 44:56Speaker 1: position to be more successful. That way, I don't get
- 44:58Speaker 1: burnt out by just seting a losing lineup every week too.
- 45:01Speaker 1: So it's a personal feeling.
- 45:04Speaker 3: I this is advice that people sometimes give. First of all,
- 45:08Speaker 3: if you're saying that you screwed up your team in
- 45:11Speaker 3: your one from that, I think you did exactly what
- 45:14Speaker 3: you needed to do in year one. Maybe you had
- 45:17Speaker 3: a couple of missteps along the way and moves that
- 45:19Speaker 3: you'd like to do differently, but it's a remarkable turnaround
- 45:22Speaker 3: what you did, and getting rid of some of your
- 45:24Speaker 3: better players was actually the right move in that circumstance.
- 45:28Speaker 3: But I would say one of the other things about
- 45:33Speaker 3: what you did getting in that thirty team league as
- 45:36Speaker 3: your first step is I can tell you the first
- 45:40Speaker 3: dynasty basketball, baseball and hockey league that I drafted as
- 45:46Speaker 3: a startup. I was not the sharp in the room.
- 45:49Speaker 3: I sure as heck was not almost There were definitely
- 45:51Speaker 3: other people in those leagues who had more dynasty experience,
- 45:55Speaker 3: who had more just experience playing at a very competitive level,
- 45:58Speaker 3: even though I played for decades now. But I have
- 46:02Speaker 3: been less successful in those leagues, the ones that I
- 46:06Speaker 3: the first one I drafted as a startup. It almost
- 46:10Speaker 3: turns into your own orphan, your own rebuild that you
- 46:14Speaker 3: look at it after two years, Oh, what the heck
- 46:16Speaker 3: have I done? Because you learn from your mistakes. Learning
- 46:19Speaker 3: from your mistakes in an orphan is sometimes a little
- 46:23Speaker 3: bit less painful because you can go through those lessons
- 46:27Speaker 3: and it's like the thing was already screwed up. Although
- 46:29Speaker 3: I always liked I think I've taken over. Three of
- 46:32Speaker 3: my current dynasty teams are orphans that I took over.
- 46:35Speaker 3: They're all baseball teams. And I also joined Barry Baker late,
- 46:41Speaker 3: and I took over a team that was third to
- 46:44Speaker 3: last in the standings when I did it, Actually it
- 46:47Speaker 3: might have been last in the standings the year that
- 46:50Speaker 3: I took it over, and I was I won a
- 46:52Speaker 3: championship last year, eight years later. But it was a
- 46:55Speaker 3: long and painful process and the leagues that I really
- 47:00Speaker 3: I did startup drafts on. I ended up winning my
- 47:03Speaker 3: baseball one after years, but I still have never won
- 47:06Speaker 3: that basketball or that hockey one, partly because I've freaking
- 47:09Speaker 3: founded that dynasty hockey league with Victor. That's how I
- 47:13Speaker 3: met Victor, and he keeps freaking running up the score
- 47:15Speaker 3: in that thing. But yeah, sometimes your own team is
- 47:18Speaker 3: an orphan. So coming in with an orphan it's not
- 47:20Speaker 3: a bad thing, but you do have to learn the
- 47:23Speaker 3: lay of the land. When it's an established league. One
- 47:25Speaker 3: of the nice things is you can look at some
- 47:27Speaker 3: of the moves that have been made. You can look
- 47:29Speaker 3: at the teams that are successful and try to figure
- 47:31Speaker 3: out how they got there, and that can give you
- 47:33Speaker 3: some clues about how to be better at what you
- 47:35Speaker 3: need to do.
- 47:36Speaker 1: That's my rule number two. When time's taken over an
- 47:39Speaker 1: orphan is typically there's some sort of historical record of
- 47:42Speaker 1: every trade that's been made, and I am looking through
- 47:44Speaker 1: every trade from the inception of the league to see
- 47:48Speaker 1: where I'm analytical too, So that's just the way the
- 47:51Speaker 1: mind works. But in order to figure out what kind
- 47:54Speaker 1: of value you have and players, you should be able
- 47:56Speaker 1: to see this by other players that were similar prospects.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Go for what did picks go for? I have this
- 48:02Speaker 1: player now and he was traded two years ago. What
- 48:04Speaker 1: was he traded for? And that's a really good way
- 48:07Speaker 1: to understand what you have value wise and how you
- 48:10Speaker 1: can adopt or how you can change your team, whether
- 48:13Speaker 1: you want to push it in a more competitive right
- 48:15Speaker 1: or try to acquire a few more future aspects. For
- 48:18Speaker 1: it is, go through all the trades. Just keep going
- 48:21Speaker 1: through them, maybe limited to a few years if it's
- 48:24Speaker 1: a really long standing league, because things change over time.
- 48:26Speaker 1: But this will give you a much better understanding of
- 48:30Speaker 1: what you're trying to are, the value of the players
- 48:33Speaker 1: that you have or the players that you're trying to acquire,
- 48:36Speaker 1: and then throw out a couple of the outliers. Right,
- 48:38Speaker 1: there's going to be some trades that just like, how
- 48:40Speaker 1: the heck did this person go for three first round picks?
- 48:43Speaker 1: And maybe I'll just eliminate that one from my understanding,
- 48:46Speaker 1: so I know that one doesn't really make a whole,
- 48:48Speaker 1: that one doesn't really mean anything when it comes to
- 48:50Speaker 1: the overall value of the league. So just having that
- 48:53Speaker 1: understanding of value helps tremendously.
- 48:57Speaker 3: Definitely it does. I came into the thirty team and
- 49:01Speaker 3: I had just taken over for a manager who I knew,
- 49:06Speaker 3: who was one of the most fearsome prospect guys and
- 49:09Speaker 3: traders that I've ever met, and the personality wise he
- 49:15Speaker 3: joined that league in about three months later he flamed
- 49:17Speaker 3: out of it, and at various points he's flamed out
- 49:20Speaker 3: of leagues that I did, but he was very good
- 49:23Speaker 3: at what he did. So I was taken over his team.
- 49:25Speaker 3: He'd already started to rebuild the minor system in beautiful ways.
- 49:29Speaker 3: And also when I came in, Barry gave me the
- 49:31Speaker 3: tip that the Fernando Tatis owner was interested in trading
- 49:36Speaker 3: Tatis for Nick Simzel, who at the time was close
- 49:40Speaker 3: to the same level of prospect. So I made that
- 49:44Speaker 3: offer early and that helped. And then a couple of
- 49:46Speaker 3: years later, the guy who got the pick, the guy
- 49:50Speaker 3: the guy who had picked number three, offered me pick
- 49:56Speaker 3: number three that year and the first we Arelady knew
- 50:00Speaker 3: it was going to be the number one pick. The
- 50:01Speaker 3: following year for the number one pick that was going
- 50:04Speaker 3: to be Adli Rushman. So I ended up trading away
- 50:07Speaker 3: the pick that was going to be Adley Rushman, and
- 50:10Speaker 3: I got Bobby Witt Junior and somebody else of that ILK.
- 50:13Speaker 3: I forget who it is now, but it was I
- 50:16Speaker 3: fell into a couple of trades in that league that
- 50:18Speaker 3: really boosted me up. So sometimes you just you hang around,
- 50:22Speaker 3: you keep conversations going. But yeah, you look for the
- 50:25Speaker 3: teams that have pushed themselves up over the years, figure
- 50:27Speaker 3: out how they did it. Look for every little advantage,
- 50:30Speaker 3: scrape for every little prospect. That's the great thing about
- 50:33Speaker 3: that league because there's seventy prospects per team. There's constantly
- 50:38Speaker 3: you constantly can dig and maybe find somebody way deep
- 50:41Speaker 3: down in the rankings. And a lot of those guys
- 50:44Speaker 3: have come in and been useful to me in the
- 50:47Speaker 3: long term more than you would think. Guys that I
- 50:49Speaker 3: picked up off the waiver wire in a league with
- 50:52Speaker 3: seventy team minor league rosters ended up starting games for
- 50:55Speaker 3: my team.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I have some of the same similar experience, especially
- 51:00Speaker 1: in that league. Or I don't even know the names
- 51:02Speaker 1: of players, I'm just like, all right, they're available, let
- 51:05Speaker 1: me google them real quick, figure out what they're good at,
- 51:08Speaker 1: put them in a little savant and see if it
- 51:11Speaker 1: maybe it's worth a snag. Right, And I have several players,
- 51:14Speaker 1: is it Riley O'Brien for the Cardinals. He was one
- 51:17Speaker 1: that I just randomly added during free agency for nothing. Wow. Yeah,
- 51:21Speaker 1: And he's ended up being like one of the best
- 51:22Speaker 1: relief pictures in baseball right now. So he's working out wonder.
- 51:26Speaker 1: It looks great now. But during free agency no one
- 51:28Speaker 1: else been on him. I was like, Okay, I'll take him.
- 51:30Speaker 1: But I didn't know at the time, and that happens
- 51:32Speaker 1: so frequently. But I love that you said. Another thing
- 51:35Speaker 1: is that the communication that you have between the other managers.
- 51:39Speaker 1: So that's something that I would also encourage when you're
- 51:41Speaker 1: joining an orphan is make sure to be open and
- 51:44Speaker 1: able to communicate because that makes everything so much better.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Instead of just sending wild trades and just sending something crazy,
- 51:54Speaker 1: or even just sending a trade that's fine, I really
- 51:56Speaker 1: enjoy the conversation piece behind it, so you get to
- 51:59Speaker 1: know what's import aren't to other people, and just the
- 52:01Speaker 1: general niceties. I always say it on everything every time
- 52:05Speaker 1: I've been on with you. I always say at the
- 52:06Speaker 1: end is fantasy sports builds a great community, and you
- 52:09Speaker 1: don't have to get along with everybody. There's people that
- 52:11Speaker 1: I don't really get along with great and people don't
- 52:14Speaker 1: always like my personality because I'm a degenerate in a
- 52:16Speaker 1: New Yorker and I'm gonna tell you so. Some people
- 52:19Speaker 1: don't like it, and it's fine. You don't have to
- 52:21Speaker 1: like it. But it's a really good thing to be
- 52:22Speaker 1: a part of a thriving community. And even from my
- 52:26Speaker 1: first days when I joined the Red Rock One, just
- 52:27Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, Craig was in there telling
- 52:30Speaker 1: me what he's offering. Welcome to the team, Matt Smith.
- 52:34Speaker 1: She got me some messages recently, and as long as
- 52:37Speaker 1: you're honest and communicating, that's how you build really strong leagues.
- 52:40Speaker 1: And I wasn't ready. I would tell those people straight up, hey,
- 52:44Speaker 1: I'm not ready yet. I gotta review the rules, I
- 52:46Speaker 1: gotta see trades. I got a potential lottery pick. I
- 52:49Speaker 1: don't want to make any commitments. Now. Get me back
- 52:51Speaker 1: in a couple of weeks when I'm a little bit
- 52:53Speaker 1: more acclimated and we could start talking to some shop
- 52:55Speaker 1: And those people have been super respectful and I love
- 52:59Speaker 1: having the conversation. So I'm here to learn a bunch
- 53:01Speaker 1: from some great people and continue to build that dynasty
- 53:05Speaker 1: family that we got together.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I always, like I said, I have had to
- 53:09Speaker 3: recruit and fill a lot of orphans, and generally I
- 53:14Speaker 3: tell people, please wait a minute before you make trades,
- 53:17Speaker 3: because there are sharks swimming in these waters. Sharks you
- 53:20Speaker 3: got to be careful and do do the study, like
- 53:23Speaker 3: what you've done Marcus, before you just start throwing stuff
- 53:26Speaker 3: out there. Because especially in things involving like salaries, contracts,
- 53:30Speaker 3: scoring settings that you're not used to, draft pic settings
- 53:33Speaker 3: you're not used to, it's just so easy to make
- 53:35Speaker 3: a mistake, and they're so easy for people to pull
- 53:38Speaker 3: one over on you that you really have to kind
- 53:41Speaker 3: of take your time and get yourself, get yourself acclimated.
- 53:44Speaker 3: But yeah, but it could be done.
- 53:47Speaker 1: I actually got one on that. I got one on that.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Usually my experiences are pretty positive, but I remember, I
- 53:51Speaker 1: won't say leagues or names or anything like that because
- 53:54Speaker 1: I won't say it, but I traded a really top
- 53:57Speaker 1: end player in the league and I didn't get I
- 54:00Speaker 1: thought I got a really good return for it. A
- 54:01Speaker 1: couple of first and a couple of prospects, only to
- 54:04Speaker 1: find out that after it, if they don't re sign
- 54:06Speaker 1: that player, they get a first round pick back, which
- 54:09Speaker 1: was essentially the same first that I got, because they
- 54:11Speaker 1: won the league with that player. And I was like, oh, man,
- 54:15Speaker 1: I didn't realize that I got. Man, I would have
- 54:17Speaker 1: asked for more, and their response was welcome to the league,
- 54:19Speaker 1: young guy. And I was like, dang, wow that one. Now, right,
- 54:24Speaker 1: next time you want something from me, I'm expecting some
- 54:26Speaker 1: reparations from that trade, right, So we'll see what happens.
- 54:31Speaker 1: But yeah, that was one thing that kind of rubbed
- 54:32Speaker 1: me the wrong way at the time. But at the
- 54:34Speaker 1: same time, I made a move without knowing all the rules.
- 54:37Speaker 1: And that's some of what you were just saying is
- 54:39Speaker 1: there's always sharks in the water, so you gotta watch out.
- 54:42Speaker 3: Yeah, And that's one of the you can generally pick
- 54:45Speaker 3: that up by looking at those past trades, and especially
- 54:49Speaker 3: with hindsight, when you see those things three years later,
- 54:52Speaker 3: if you're not all the way deep into the prospect
- 54:55Speaker 3: sphere and you look at it and years later it
- 54:58Speaker 3: was just, oh my gosh, how did he get that return?
- 55:01Speaker 3: Which is not always what you So frequently you see
- 55:03Speaker 3: the trades and you're like, oh man, that was really
- 55:06Speaker 3: a that was really an uneven trade, and then it
- 55:10Speaker 3: turns out to be fine after a couple of years
- 55:12Speaker 3: because guys flame out. But then sometimes you see the
- 55:14Speaker 3: other side of that, Yeah, yeah, that could be a thing, but.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Everyone's done it. Though everybody's done it, it's nothing to
- 55:22Speaker 1: be ashamed of. Just you try not to be that person.
- 55:25Speaker 1: But also you'd always like when you get a little
- 55:27Speaker 1: w in a trade sometimes, so everyone's been on both
- 55:30Speaker 1: parts of them, not always intentionally, but it does happen.
- 55:34Speaker 3: And just like drafting the rookie drafts, when you're doing trading,
- 55:38Speaker 3: there's a lot of people on the rebuild that there's
- 55:42Speaker 3: one rebuild that I entered this year, and I will
- 55:44Speaker 3: admit I'm struggling at it because this orphan team, there's
- 55:49Speaker 3: not a whole lot of trading going on, and I'm
- 55:51Speaker 3: looking at that league and saying, if I don't start
- 55:54Speaker 3: doing some trading, it's going to be really difficult to
- 55:56Speaker 3: do this rebuild. I'm almost just counting on my guys
- 55:59Speaker 3: the mature better than the other teams in the league.
- 56:02Speaker 3: But I'm having difficulty breaking through on some of this trading.
- 56:06Speaker 3: I'm still trying to crack the nut, but that is
- 56:09Speaker 3: difficult too. When you're doing an orphan rebuild, that's the
- 56:12Speaker 3: problem is you have to be careful not to be
- 56:15Speaker 3: taken advantage of. But you're also probably gonna have to
- 56:19Speaker 3: make moves if you take over an orphan that's not
- 56:21Speaker 3: very good.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean sometimes that's the difficulty, right, So you
- 56:26Speaker 1: really hope that you have an active person that will
- 56:28Speaker 1: be willing to take the next steps, and it's okay
- 56:31Speaker 1: to take over a team that's not good. Some of
- 56:34Speaker 1: it is that internal pride of you take over a
- 56:36Speaker 1: really bad team. I took over a fantasy hockey team,
- 56:39Speaker 1: a thirty two team league, and I got we do
- 56:42Speaker 1: four matchups per week, and I went oh in eighty
- 56:47Speaker 1: four my first season, and it was intended. I was like,
- 56:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna my team is really bad, I'm gonna acquire
- 56:54Speaker 1: draft picks, I'm going to acquire prospects. I'm not gonna
- 56:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna keep my prospects in the minors. So I
- 56:59Speaker 1: had some people and that was the Connor Badard year.
- 57:02Speaker 1: So I was like, I'm gonna go and get the
- 57:03Speaker 1: worst record and get Connor Badard, and then I didn't
- 57:05Speaker 1: read the rules well enough and realize that it was
- 57:08Speaker 1: it was based on the actual draft lottery for the NHL,
- 57:12Speaker 1: and I didn't end up getting Connor Badar, so I
- 57:15Speaker 1: was like, you know what, I'm never leaving this the
- 57:17Speaker 1: chance again. So the next year I went four and eighty,
- 57:20Speaker 1: so we stopped progress, and then I made the playoffs
- 57:23Speaker 1: the following year. So I always tried to limit myself
- 57:26Speaker 1: to two years. Collect assets that you can trade away
- 57:30Speaker 1: instead of just collecting late round picks, get value out
- 57:33Speaker 1: of them so that way you know they can move
- 57:36Speaker 1: and you don't have to rely on all the way
- 57:37Speaker 1: in mixed bag, right, and get that mixed bag so
- 57:40Speaker 1: you can still move liquid assets as well as wait
- 57:42Speaker 1: for some prospects to develop. So it worked out. Hurt
- 57:46Speaker 1: a little, but not I don't even want Connor. I'll
- 57:49Speaker 1: get rid of them everywhere if you haven't noticed.
- 57:53Speaker 3: Because you're in salary leagues, because you're in salary leagues.
- 57:55Speaker 3: And Connor just got signed for pretty big money, right.
- 57:59Speaker 1: He took a decent deal though it's like fifteen that
- 58:01Speaker 1: was not bad compared to.
- 58:03Speaker 3: Yeah, relative to the rest of the league. Right now,
- 58:06Speaker 3: it's brutal, but in the long term, it's less than
- 58:10Speaker 3: he probably could have got. So yeah, it turns out. Yeah, yeah,
- 58:14Speaker 3: it's a good deal. It's how Web and Yama's deal
- 58:16Speaker 3: is going to be good. He's still going to get
- 58:19Speaker 3: the max, not quite the max in hockey, but he's
- 58:23Speaker 3: going to be way above most of his peers. But
- 58:25Speaker 3: that's just because he's signing now while the CAP's going up,
- 58:27Speaker 3: and then other people will surpass him. But yeah, man,
- 58:31Speaker 3: all right, any last thoughts. We've gone and kind of talk.
- 58:35Speaker 3: This is the fundamental dynasty topic, right, we're really getting
- 58:40Speaker 3: into the very core of what it means to play
- 58:42Speaker 3: Dynasty sports. Any more thoughts that you want to share
- 58:44Speaker 3: with the people.
- 58:45Speaker 1: No, I think that's a good start. Just really understand
- 58:47Speaker 1: the league itself, how to be successful, the rules behind
- 58:52Speaker 1: all of the components be try to interpret him as
- 58:55Speaker 1: best that you can with positive intent. Get to know
- 58:58Speaker 1: your peers, get to know the league history. If you're
- 59:01Speaker 1: taking over orphans, and then remember the goal is to
- 59:04Speaker 1: try to win, right, We're going in fantasy to win,
- 59:06Speaker 1: so you have to be able to flip that switch
- 59:08Speaker 1: at some point and your plan should always include a
- 59:11Speaker 1: how can I eventually win? Right? And no matter if
- 59:15Speaker 1: you set a goal or set a plan, maybe two
- 59:18Speaker 1: years isn't for everybody, right, Maybe everyone's going to try
- 59:20Speaker 1: to compete every single year, and that's okay too. It
- 59:22Speaker 1: really depends on how you want to do it and
- 59:24Speaker 1: the time that you can allocate and the resources that
- 59:27Speaker 1: you already have in order to make that happen. But
- 59:30Speaker 1: I'm already noticing in the Red Rocks League people have
- 59:32Speaker 1: no picks for the next thirty years, right, and they're
- 59:34Speaker 1: going to compete every year essentially, And that's okay, right,
- 59:39Speaker 1: because that's what they want to do. And fantasy is
- 59:42Speaker 1: supposed to be fun. So if you have guys that
- 59:44Speaker 1: you want to go out go and get your guys,
- 59:46Speaker 1: pay what you want to pay. You got to live
- 59:48Speaker 1: with that at the end of the day. So as
- 59:49Speaker 1: long as you're having fun, that's literally the entire point.
- 59:53Speaker 1: So go out there, continue to meet your Fantasy league mates,
- 59:57Speaker 1: build those relationships, and just enjoy solid game.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, all right, thanks Marcus. This is this has
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: been a good topic. People have questions or topics they
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: want to bring up. I'm sure Marcus and I would
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: love to talk about them or questions related to this,
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: because this is really yeah, this is the topic when
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: it comes to Dynasty sports. We'll have weeks where we
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: talk about some players too, But I enjoy having this conversation.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: Thank you for coming on once again, Marcus. Was that
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: your plug or do you have other things you want
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: to plug for people? Because I know it's not your
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: social media accounts.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: Now, I don't do social media. Even though you made
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: me make a Twitter account, Jesse, I will refuse to
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: ever use it or x or whatever it's called. Get
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: off my lawn kind of a thing. Not about that life.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: But I appreciate you having me on here in flexing
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: my bona fides for my ESPN and my my Fox moments.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: But now it's always a pleasure. I really do appreciate
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: you having me on here. Man. It's always a lot
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: of fun. So thank you. All right, and the end
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: of the day, remember be Kevin.
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: We'll leave it on that you guys get something out
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: of that. I enjoyed it. This is obviously a great topic.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: And I'll tell you what Marcus and I talked about
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: what to talk about today. We had twenty topics. This
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: was and I told the Marcus. We got to save
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: some of the good stuff, but I think we gave
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: you one that you'll appreciate. You can find me if
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: that's what you're looking for at Fantasy Hockey Life. I
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: do a podcast there with Victor Nunio where we talk
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: about Dynasty Fantasy Hockey in particular. Marcus is part of
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: that whole operation as well, playing along. And you can
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: also read me at Baseball HQ, where I write every
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: other week on baseball prospects and the write up in
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: their annual prospect Guide. I think I'm going to be
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: coming back to do that this year, so that'll be
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: a cool one. And you can thank the boys that
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: end this league for hosting and post on this show.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: Thank you for listening, everybody. I hope you enjoyed everything
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: you heard. I hope you'll leave five stars if you
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: happened to like us that much. And until next time,
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: good luck with all your dynasty and fantasy leagues.
