- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 13th of
- 0:16November, and we are, boy, we are getting close to the end of
- 0:20the year, aren't we? We're almost halfway through the
- 0:222nd last month of the year. Oh, and here we are, even at
- 0:27this point in the year, working our way through this incredible
- 0:30story in the book of Acts as Jesus moves these people to
- 0:36share the good news about everything that he has done for
- 0:39us and that church starts to grow.
- 0:42And today's reading is quite a profound 1.
- 0:46Today's reading is Luke's take on what Stephen said when he
- 0:51addressed the council. Because we know that Luke
- 0:53wouldn't have been in the room with a notepad and pencil
- 0:55scribbling down everything Stephen said, but as he
- 0:59represented this monologue of Stephens to the council, he
- 1:06would have summarised all that that early church knew to be
- 1:09true and shared the story of their faith from the very
- 1:13beginning through to that day. So it is Luke and his best
- 1:18attempt to, in one little speech, wrap up the entirety,
- 1:24the whole narrative of God walking with people all the way
- 1:28through to this point in the story.
- 1:30So that's pretty exciting. It's a great thing for us to be
- 1:33able to read and take this story to heart because this is the
- 1:37story of God and our people all the way back then, all the way
- 1:42through to Jesus, as recorded in Acts Chapter 7.
- 1:57Then the high priest asked Stephen, are these accusations
- 2:02true? This was Stephen's reply.
- 2:06Brothers and fathers, listen to me.
- 2:09Our glorious God appeared to our ancestor Abraham in Mesopotamia
- 2:14before he settled in Haran. God told him, leave your native
- 2:18land and your relatives and come into the land that I will show
- 2:22you. So Abraham left the land of the
- 2:24Chaldeans and lived in Haran until his father died.
- 2:28Then God brought him here, to the land where you now live.
- 2:33But God gave him no inheritance here, not even one square foot
- 2:37of land. God did promise, however, that
- 2:40eventually the whole land would belong to Abraham and his
- 2:44descendants, even though he had no children yet.
- 2:48God also told him that his descendants would live in a
- 2:51foreign land where they would be oppressed as slaves for 400
- 2:55years. But I will punish the nation
- 2:58that enslaves them, God said, And in the end they will come
- 3:03out and worship me here in this place.
- 3:07God also gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision at that
- 3:10time. So when Abraham became the
- 3:12father of Isaac, he circumcised him on the 8th day.
- 3:17And the practise was continued when Isaac became the father of
- 3:20Jacob, and when Jacob became the father of the 12 patriarchs of
- 3:24the Israelite nation. These patriarchs were jealous of
- 3:28their brother Joseph, and they sold him to be a slave in Egypt.
- 3:32But God was with him and rescued him from all his troubles, and
- 3:37God gave him favour before Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
- 3:41God also gave Joseph unusual wisdom, so that Pharaoh
- 3:45appointed him governor over all of Egypt and put him in charge
- 3:50for the palace. But a famine came upon Egypt and
- 3:53Canaan. There was great misery, and our
- 3:56ancestors ran out of food. Jacob heard that there was still
- 4:00grain in Egypt, so he sent his sons, our ancestors, to buy
- 4:04some. The second time they went,
- 4:07Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers, and they were
- 4:10introduced to Pharaoh. Then Joseph sent for his father
- 4:14Jacob and all his relatives to come to Egypt, 75 persons in
- 4:19all. So Jacob went to Egypt.
- 4:23He died there, as did our ancestors.
- 4:26Their bodies were taken to Shechem and buried in the tomb
- 4:29of Abraham and bought for a certain price from Hamor's sons
- 4:34in Shechem. As the time drew near when God
- 4:38would fulfil His promise to Abraham, the number of our
- 4:41people in Egypt greatly increased.
- 4:44But then a new king came to the throne of Egypt who knew nothing
- 4:48about Joseph. This king exploited our people
- 4:51and oppressed them, forcing parents to abandon their newborn
- 4:55babies so they would die. At that time, Moses was born a
- 5:00beautiful child in God's eyes. His parents cared for him at
- 5:04home for three months. When they had to abandon him,
- 5:09Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and raised him as her own son.
- 5:14Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians and he was
- 5:18powerful both in speech and action.
- 5:21One day when Moses was 40 years old, he decided to visit his
- 5:25relatives, the people of Israel. He saw an Egyptian mistreating
- 5:29an Israelite. So Moses came to the men's
- 5:32defence and avenged him, killing the Egyptian.
- 5:36Moses assumed his fellow Israelites would realise that
- 5:39God had sent him to rescue them, but they didn't.
- 5:43The next day he visited them again and saw two men of Israel
- 5:47fighting. He tried to be a peacemaker.
- 5:49Men, he said, you are brothers, why are you fighting each other?
- 5:53But the man in the wrong pushed Moses aside.
- 5:57Who made you a ruler and judge over us?
- 5:59He asked. Are you going to kill me as you
- 6:01killed that Egyptian yesterday? When Moses heard that, he fled
- 6:06the country and lived as a foreigner in the land of Midian.
- 6:10There his two sons were born. 40 years later, in the desert near
- 6:15Mount Sinai, an Angel appeared to Moses in the flame of a
- 6:19burning Bush. When Moses saw it, he was amazed
- 6:24at the sight. As he went to take a closer
- 6:26look, the voice of the Lord called out to him.
- 6:29I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
- 6:35Jacob. Moses shook with terror and did
- 6:39not dare to look. Then the Lord said to him, Take
- 6:43off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground.
- 6:49I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in
- 6:51Egypt. I have heard their groans and
- 6:55have come down to rescue them. Go now, for I am sending you
- 6:59back to Egypt. So God sent back the same man
- 7:04His people had previously rejected when they demanded, Who
- 7:08made you a ruler and judge over us?
- 7:11Through the Angel who appeared to him in the burning Bush.
- 7:14God sent Moses to be their ruler and Saviour, and by means of
- 7:19many wonders and miraculous signs he led them out of Egypt,
- 7:23through the Red Sea and through the wilderness for 40 years.
- 7:28Moses himself told the people of Israel, God will raise up for
- 7:32you a prophet like me from among your own people.
- 7:36Moses was with our ancestors, the assembly of God's people in
- 7:40the wilderness, when the angels spoke to him at Mount Sinai.
- 7:44And there Moses received life, giving words to pass on to us.
- 7:49But our ancestors refused to listen to Moses.
- 7:52They rejected him and wanted to return to Egypt.
- 7:56They told Aaron, make us some gods who can lead us, for we
- 8:00don't know what has become of this Moses who brought us out of
- 8:03Egypt. So they made an idle shaped like
- 8:06a calf, and they sacrificed to it and celebrated over this
- 8:10thing they had made. Then God turned away from them
- 8:15and abandoned them to serve the stars of heaven as their gods.
- 8:20In the book of the Prophet it is written.
- 8:23Was it to me you were bringing sacrifices and offerings during
- 8:27those 40 years in the wilderness?
- 8:29Israel. No, you carried your Pagan gods,
- 8:33the shrine of Molech, the star of your God Rafan, and the
- 8:38images you made to worship them. So I will send you into exile as
- 8:43far away as Babylon. Our ancestors carried the
- 8:48Tabernacle with them through the wilderness.
- 8:50It was consecrated according to the plan God had shown to Moses.
- 8:54Years later, when Joshua LED our ancestors in battle against the
- 8:58nations that God drove out of this land, the Tabernacle was
- 9:02taken with them into their new territory, and it stayed there
- 9:07until the time of King David. David found favour with God and
- 9:12asked for the privilege of building a permanent temple for
- 9:15the God of Jacob, but it was Solomon who actually built it.
- 9:19However, the Most High doesn't live in temples made by human
- 9:22hands. As the prophet says, Heaven is
- 9:25my throne and the earth is my footstool.
- 9:29Could you build me a temple as good as that?
- 9:31Asked the Lord. Could you build me such a
- 9:34resting place? Didn't my hands make both heaven
- 9:38and earth? You stubborn people, you are
- 9:42heathen at heart and deaf to the truth.
- 9:45Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit?
- 9:47That's what your ancestors did, and so do you.
- 9:51Name one prophet your ancestors didn't persecute.
- 9:54They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the
- 9:57righteous. 1 The Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered, you
- 10:02deliberately disobeyed God's law, even though you received it
- 10:06from the hands of angels. The Jewish leaders were
- 10:10infuriated by Stephen's accusation, and they shook their
- 10:14fists at him in rage. But Stephen, full of the Holy
- 10:19Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God.
- 10:25And he saw Jesus standing at the place of honour at God's right
- 10:29hand. And he told them, look, I see
- 10:33the heavens open, and the Son of man standing in the place of
- 10:37honour at God's right hand. Then they put their hands over
- 10:42their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him and dragged
- 10:46him out of the city and began to stone him.
- 10:48His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet
- 10:53of a young man named Saul. As they stoned him, Stephen
- 10:58prayed, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
- 11:04He fell to his knees shouting, Lord, don't charge them with
- 11:08this sin. And with that he died.
- 11:13Oh Jesus, long have you walked with
- 11:26us, your people, from creation through to the patriarchs, all
- 11:31the way through those times, all the way through to now.
- 11:36You walk with us. And there indeed you stand, not
- 11:41only beside us, not only resident in US in the form of
- 11:45your Holy Spirit, but standing at the right hand of the throne
- 11:49in heaven, where you have that position of honour.
- 11:55For you, Jesus, are the holy One of God.
- 11:59Holy, holy, holy is your name. And so today, just as Stephen
- 12:06did all those years ago, we lift you up and we declare that you
- 12:11indeed, our Lord, you are the Messiah.
- 12:14You are the one chosen and delivered by God the Father to
- 12:19save us from our sins and reconcile us to you.
- 12:26We are so grateful for all you've done for us, Jesus.
- 12:30And so we stand in awe of your greatness and we worship you and
- 12:34pray all these things in your name.
- 12:37Amen.
