- Five thousand dollars. If your side wins. That's the pledge from President Trump this morning. And the question I want you carrying today: what happens to a nation's soul when votes get a price tag? This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. Here's what we know. Speaking last night in Dallas at the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention, President Trump promised a five thousand dollar payout to every adult American citizen — but only if Republicans hold both the House and Senate on November third. He called it the "Trump Dividend." No details on how it works. No details on funding. Vice President JD Vance suggested on Fox News that tariff revenue would cover it. The math is staggering. Roughly two hundred and seventy million American adults. That puts the price tag near one point three trillion dollars. Democrats called it an empty promise. Election lawyers are split on the legality. Federal law forbids payments intended to influence voting. Some experts argue a general campaign pledge is protected speech. Every president promises the world before an election. But the specificity here — vote this way, receive this check — is not normal. Christians across the political spectrum should feel a small alarm bell before they feel a small thrill. Scripture is not neutral about this instinct. In First Samuel eight, Israel demands a king who will give them what other nations have. Samuel warns them: he will take, and take, and take. God grants the request, but calls it a rejection of His kingship. If you want to sit with that passage today, keep First Samuel eight open in Bible Copilot and read it slowly. Development two. The same speech carried a quieter admission. President Trump told supporters the war with Iran — the war the US and Israel began in February — will not end until after the midterms. He said oil prices will stay high until then. He argued the short-term pain is worth stopping Tehran from getting a nuclear weapon. Sit with the sequence. A five thousand dollar promise. And a war's timing tied to an election calendar. Proverbs eleven, verse one: a false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight. When lives and livelihoods get placed on the scale of political timing, the Christian is right to notice. Development three. In Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton took the same stage and unveiled a thousand-dollar tax relief plan against Democrat James Talarico. Paxton also mocked Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, for saying God is "non-binary" and claiming six genders exist. Paxton said, "I must have missed that verse in the Bible." Two things can be true. Talarico's theology, as quoted, departs plainly from Scripture. And using the Bible as a campaign punchline is its own departure. Christians can name error without weaponizing the Word. Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard. One practice: before you share a political clip, ask whether you're defending truth or scoring a point. Those are not the same thing. This episode is presented by Bible Copilot. Open Bible Copilot and start with the Verse of the Day. You'll walk through a guided study — what the passage says, what it means, what it teaches about God, and how to apply it this week. Then bring your own question, like First Samuel eight. Three questions a day are free. Start at mybiblecopilot dot com slash gospel. "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes." Princes make promises. Some they keep. Many they cannot. Our refuge was never the ballot or the check. Thanks for listening to The Gospel Briefing. Whichever way November breaks, your King is already seated. We'll see you tomorrow.
