- 0:37This is Madeline with the Becker CFO and
- 0:40Revenue Cycle podcast, and I'm thrilled to be
- 0:42joined today by Scott Hoeg, executive vice president
- 0:45and CFO of BJC Health in Saint Louis.
- 0:48How are you doing, Scott? Thanks so much
- 0:50for joining me. Thank you for having me.
- 0:52Great to be here.
- 0:53Wonderful. So before we kick things off, Scott,
- 0:56do you mind sharing just a little bit
- 0:57about yourself
- 0:59and BJC Health with our listeners?
- 1:02Sure.
- 1:03Scott Howig joining you. Glad to be here
- 1:05again.
- 1:06I'm the CFO of BJC Health beginning in
- 1:09September
- 1:102025.
- 1:11So I'm still relatively new here
- 1:14at BJC. It's a 14
- 1:16hospital,
- 1:17$12,000,000,000
- 1:18system based in St. Louis, Missouri.
- 1:21Serves patients throughout Kansas, Missouri, and Southern Illinois.
- 1:26National reputation for quality of care. So really
- 1:28excited to be part of this team and
- 1:30and part of the mission that they serve.
- 1:33Wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing.
- 1:35So,
- 1:36you know, let's let's dive in here. So,
- 1:38you know, as you and I just discussed
- 1:40right before we kicked off the podcast, BJC
- 1:43Health,
- 1:44did rebrand,
- 1:45later last year, was originally BJC Health Care,
- 1:48now BJC
- 1:50Health.
- 1:51And as you mentioned,
- 1:53$11,000,000,000
- 1:54organization.
- 1:55So
- 1:55all of this in mind, could you let
- 1:57me know kinda how that rebranding went? I
- 1:59know that the system merged, with St. Luke's
- 2:02in 2024 as well. So how how are
- 2:04things going just overall?
- 2:06Going really well. And and specific to the
- 2:09the branding and the name changes, I mentioned
- 2:11the region, the relatively large region we serve
- 2:15between Kansas, Missouri and Southern Illinois.
- 2:18Some of our capabilities
- 2:19draw from markets even beyond that. It was
- 2:22important for us to
- 2:24have, I'll say, kind of a singular message
- 2:26on who are they were coming to see.
- 2:28It full flows through to the culture of
- 2:30our people, to the quality would we deliver
- 2:33regardless of site, to the way we believe
- 2:35we treat patients and our staff and put
- 2:37people first.
- 2:38And so it was really, you can say,
- 2:40the rallying cry on identifying who we are
- 2:43regardless of what location you come to see
- 2:45us in.
- 2:47Wonderful.
- 2:47And I wanna self correct myself. I think
- 2:49I said 11,000,000,000. You said 12,000,000,000. Correct? Yeah.
- 2:52I see. I'm I'm trying to get you
- 2:54to round up. Yeah. 12,000,000,000. Understood. Well, so,
- 2:56Scott, could you share with me, you know,
- 2:59as across your time in the industry, we've
- 3:01seen a lot of changes in health care
- 3:03recently as well. Being newer to the system,
- 3:06as you mentioned at the beginning,
- 3:08could you share with myself and some listeners
- 3:10maybe the broader challenges that you're currently focused
- 3:13on in health care right now, maybe some
- 3:15things you're following closely in the industry and
- 3:17why these trends are so important to you?
- 3:20Yeah. I'd say top of mind that the
- 3:22headliner for me is access.
- 3:25We have overwhelming
- 3:27demand for our services,
- 3:29the acuity level,
- 3:31the severity of the issues we're seeing in
- 3:33our community is is rising.
- 3:36And so,
- 3:37to me,
- 3:38we can talk today about regulatory
- 3:41changes coming in the regulatory environment.
- 3:44There's certainly a labor supply, just a number
- 3:47of people we need,
- 3:49physician, nurse, allied health professional in order to
- 3:52deliver the care,
- 3:54and the financial pressure generally that providers are
- 3:57under. And that includes affordability
- 3:59Mhmm. Of what our payers and patients are
- 4:02under. But that's all under the prism of
- 4:04rising demand. So that's why I I I
- 4:06lead with access.
- 4:08How can we ensure that we see everyone
- 4:11timely? I think it drives our quality program.
- 4:14It drives I mentioned earlier, you know, kind
- 4:16of our view around patient satisfaction
- 4:19and consumerism.
- 4:21To to me, that's the one I follow
- 4:22the most closely and I'll say tie all
- 4:24those other tentacles back to.
- 4:27Yeah. What are some ways that you, you
- 4:29know, at BJC Health are making sure to,
- 4:32bring that access to patients?
- 4:34Yeah. One of the draws to me to
- 4:37BJC was the wide reach it had
- 4:40and all the different types of geographies and
- 4:42settings and size communities that they serve.
- 4:45I bring that up because
- 4:47access
- 4:48looks a little different in each of those
- 4:50settings from a rural community
- 4:52towards more of an urban community, how you
- 4:55deploy primary care, what you can do virtually.
- 4:58It all looks and feels a little bit
- 5:00different. And I put BJC as a leader
- 5:02in that camp
- 5:04in terms of, you know, making sure our
- 5:06doors are open to that access
- 5:08and being a leader in innovation and looking
- 5:11for new business processes and technology in order
- 5:14to do that. And so it's new primary
- 5:16care models.
- 5:18It's virtual,
- 5:19things like EICU, which the industry as a
- 5:22whole has come around to seeing the benefits
- 5:24of.
- 5:25BJC and its partner Wash, you were one
- 5:27of the early adopters of that in terms
- 5:29of how you can bring some of that
- 5:30critical care monitoring into our communities. So it's
- 5:33it's innovation like that that I think put
- 5:35BJC as a leader
- 5:38on on opening doors to access.
- 5:41We're seeing a lot of,
- 5:43expansion to that systems with, freestanding
- 5:46EDs, freestanding ERs, however you'd like to say
- 5:48it. Is that something that has been of
- 5:50interest at BJC Health?
- 5:53Yeah. It is. In particular, our our what
- 5:55I'll call is our West Region, or or
- 5:57St. Luke's in the Kansas City market
- 6:00was Yeah. To your point, was an early
- 6:02adopter of that micro hospital
- 6:05strategy.
- 6:06Have found those to the the throughput, the
- 6:09ability to see somebody within ten to fifteen
- 6:11minutes. The patient satisfaction for that experience
- 6:15is really, you know, has shown us a
- 6:17lot and given us a lot of feedback
- 6:19in terms of how we run ED and
- 6:21urgent cares and that emergent type surge service
- 6:24everywhere.
- 6:25What we are able to deploy
- 6:28to those sites
- 6:29as a virtual basis, so consultations,
- 6:32right, to determine what type
- 6:34of situation that patient is having
- 6:37is, you could say in many ways as
- 6:39a pilot on what we think we can
- 6:41do
- 6:42in other locations.
- 6:43And so, yeah, that's another good example of
- 6:46of,
- 6:47kind of BJC's innovation in that space.
- 6:50Yeah. And sticking to your point about care
- 6:52access, one more question for you. Also hearing
- 6:54a lot of CFOs talking about, you know,
- 6:56making sure they're providing proper care to aging
- 6:58populations. Is this something you're also seeing?
- 7:01It is.
- 7:03I'm broadly say,
- 7:04I'm in the Midwest and I came from
- 7:06a Midwest place and
- 7:08I'm gonna say I'm still in the Midwest
- 7:10and,
- 7:11aging population is something that holds throughout the
- 7:14Midwest. And so that is the
- 7:16a rising amount of our volume. It is
- 7:18a rising amount of our demographic, the aging
- 7:21of populations we serve.
- 7:23And so,
- 7:24it is kind of central to how we
- 7:26think about deploying service and that consumerism,
- 7:29if you will, for that customer.
- 7:32Yeah. For sure.
- 7:34You know, maybe, I mean, some of these
- 7:36ongoing industry challenges that we're seeing,
- 7:38what are some ways that you're working with
- 7:40your finance team to to keep them resilient
- 7:43and engaged? Essentially, maybe that secret sauce that
- 7:45you might have.
- 7:47Yeah. I I think key and I'll tie
- 7:48that a little bit to, you know, post
- 7:50COVID or in the middle of COVID there
- 7:52for that part of the workforce,
- 7:55there was a movement to hybrid or work
- 7:57from home,
- 7:58or work remote.
- 7:59And so I bring that up now because
- 8:01I think part of resiliency and part of
- 8:04keeping them engaged
- 8:06is a way to remind them of the
- 8:07mission.
- 8:09And in particular for finance staff,
- 8:12and my
- 8:13teams, how we can go to our our
- 8:15sites, our hospitals, our clinics.
- 8:17And so it could be something as little
- 8:19as if if one of them is asking
- 8:21for capital.
- 8:22Do we for a specific project, do we
- 8:25go to that site and look at the
- 8:26current OR or the med surg floor
- 8:29round with our care team
- 8:31and and just hear directly from them? How
- 8:34have they made it work? What would they
- 8:35like to take it to?
- 8:37Small things like that that
- 8:40are a way of communicating
- 8:41the mission to,
- 8:43you know, to some of our staff who
- 8:44are a little bit further away from direct
- 8:46patient care, I think is critical.
- 8:49Wrap around that, just the transparency
- 8:52and and, you know, finding new ways to
- 8:54communicate
- 8:56about all the challenges we've mentioned in the
- 8:58industry.
- 8:59That's why Mhmm. Why you work at a
- 9:01place like BJC because if we can't solve
- 9:03it, who can? And so supplying in that
- 9:06message too, I think is important.
- 9:08And I know you mentioned at the beginning
- 9:10of the podcast, you're a little newer to
- 9:11your role at BJC, but how have you
- 9:14seen the CFO role evolve these last few
- 9:17months,
- 9:18amid all these changes? Maybe just beyond that
- 9:20financial numbers crunching aspect.
- 9:23Yeah. I'd say, you know, I've been fortunate
- 9:25in my career at at the prior place,
- 9:27and then it holds true here at at
- 9:30BJC as well
- 9:31to be a hobby operator,
- 9:35you know, a chief operating officer in training
- 9:38as part of the CFO role. And and
- 9:40part of it is that rounding I mentioned
- 9:42in terms of trying to understand and and
- 9:45spend time with,
- 9:46each of our sites of care.
- 9:48But a lot of it is how finance
- 9:51decisions we can make and use finance broadly.
- 9:53That could mean managed care and
- 9:55and reimbursement and working with payers. That could
- 9:58mean supply chain and how we deliver product
- 10:00and distribution,
- 10:01in addition to just pure finance and treasury.
- 10:05It it's really that operator,
- 10:07you know, kind of operator and training, understanding
- 10:10the business.
- 10:11In times, we provide education. So we provide
- 10:14the finance. Why do we account for things
- 10:16a certain way? Why do we do revenue
- 10:18cycle a certain way? And then a lot
- 10:20of times, we're hearing
- 10:22feedback from the operators and helping translate the
- 10:25business side of that. And so I that
- 10:28that to me is probably the biggest evolution
- 10:30in the in the CFO over the last
- 10:31call it five to ten years.
- 10:33Yeah. CFO definitely wears many hats. That's for
- 10:36sure.
- 10:37Final question for you here, Scott.
- 10:40Just looking forward, what are some things that
- 10:42you're most excited about right now at BJC
- 10:44Health? Maybe any partnerships, planned acquisitions?
- 10:48What gets you most excited at the system
- 10:49right now?
- 10:51For BJC Health, another draw to me was
- 10:54the,
- 10:55the academic and research,
- 10:56that we do quite frankly in both regions
- 10:58clearly through our partner with WashU,
- 11:01at St. Luke's in Kansas City as well.
- 11:03We do significant amount of of research.
- 11:06I call that out as, you know, one
- 11:09of the things where I have the most
- 11:10optimism about because I get to spend a
- 11:14little bit of every day hearing the new
- 11:16innovation
- 11:17our teams are looking at,
- 11:19our physicians and our patient care folks are
- 11:21looking at. Whether you say it's things that
- 11:23have come out of genomics and what we've
- 11:25learned as part of that process would whether
- 11:28you say it's things we've learned about
- 11:30how to treat cancer as an example
- 11:33without maybe all the evasive procedures of the
- 11:35past.
- 11:36Super exciting,
- 11:38of of how we've, I'll say, learned about
- 11:40the human body over the last five to
- 11:42ten years.
- 11:44And it, you know, it it provides
- 11:46a way to think about all those challenges
- 11:48I started with,
- 11:50how they could be solvable.
- 11:52And in many cases, we're talking about cure,
- 11:56not just treating symptoms. And so,
- 11:58I think we should all be excited about
- 12:00that.
- 12:01Yeah. Well, it sounds like the future of
- 12:04health care tech and the future at BJC
- 12:06Health is is very bright. So, Scott, I
- 12:08really appreciate you, hopping on this podcast with
- 12:11me. And, again, know it's been a few
- 12:13months, but congrats on the the new role,
- 12:14and I'm excited to chat with you again
- 12:16sometime
- 12:17soon. Yeah. Thank you. I look forward to
- 12:18it, and thanks again for having me.
