- 1:00Coming up after Johnny Dollar is the next part and the lady was lethal.
- 1:07Now it's time to take a listen to the conclusion of the Nick shar
- 1:11matter from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar. Johnny Dollar. Spell
- 1:19it j ol h n n y d O l l a R. That's
- 1:30not right. You forgot to capitalize. You're right, honey. Let me
- 1:34hear you spell your name, okay, capital j I L L jill,
- 1:41capital O apostrophe, apostrophe and never can see that capital d a r e
- 1:49oh dare. Of course, my last name is actually something else I forget,
- 1:53but my mother says I'm really an o' dare. Not the least doubt
- 1:57about it. I could see it in a minute. I like you,
- 2:00Johnny Dollar, and I kind of like you too, Joel Dear. I
- 2:05think my mother's pretty. I think she's lovely. Why don't you get married
- 2:10to her so I can have a daddy. Well, that's it's certainly something
- 2:15to think about and not a bad idea. Now, I'll be quiet before
- 2:21you wake her up. I'm already awaken with a plot like that being hatched,
- 2:24I think I better stay awake. Is there coffee? Johnny Tonight and
- 2:37Every Weekday Night, Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the
- 2:40Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator, Truly Johnny Dollar. From
- 2:57Special Investigator Johnny Dollar. Location a small cabin in the timber outside Branbury,
- 3:01Michigan to the home office Trimutual Insurance Limited, Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the
- 3:07Nike Suran Matter expense account, final page item fifteen one million dollars for a
- 3:14certain feeling. I realize, of course, that the amount of this item
- 3:17is somewhat unusual. It may be caused for mild criticism by your accounting department
- 3:23unless the accompanying report includes an adequate and detailed explanation. Therefore, to avoid
- 3:28unecessary correspondence of delay, I am attaching said explanation herewith here's your coffee cantyday.
- 3:38How long did I sleep, Johnny? Oh? A couple of hours.
- 3:42It's around four in the morning. Storm hasn't let up at all,
- 3:45has it? Oh? It's worse if anything. Still, Honey, it's
- 3:50four o'clock in the morning and your eyes are just about to fall out.
- 3:53Now you go back there and go to sleep. Do I have to move?
- 3:57You have to long now, mister hony dollar. And you were having
- 4:00a lot of fun till you look well, that's life, Sadie night now,
- 4:04good night, chill night. Proud of her. I'm crazy about her,
- 4:12that's what you mean. She's a great little girl. She's the only
- 4:16thing I ever did in my whole life that turned out right that bad?
- 4:20Huh, Johnny, it's no good. I know why you're here. I
- 4:27know what you expect from me, and the answer is no. You're jumping
- 4:30the gun. I haven't asked you anything. You will, You haven't done
- 4:32all this for nothing. You're going to ask me to come back to New
- 4:35York and testify against Nick Sharon. I might ask you to tell the truth.
- 4:41Is that just another way of wording. I didn't see anything, hear
- 4:45anything. I don't know anything about it, and I have nothing to say.
- 4:49So nixt Sharon gets away with another murder, I wouldn't know anything about
- 4:54that, And sooner or later, of course he'll kill you. Cho He
- 4:57sent Benny Stark out to do it, and Benny missed. But he's he
- 5:00got other boys, or he might even handle the job himself. Why by
- 5:03now he ought to know that. I'm not going to tell, but there's
- 5:05always that chance you might change your mind that Nick's a gambler, but he
- 5:09likes the odds on his side. He doesn't take chances. Whenever he can,
- 5:13he stacks that deck. I wish I could help you, Johnny,
- 5:18but I don't know anything about it. I left before it happened. How
- 5:23long have you worked for Nick Sharon? Known him two years. I'm not
- 5:28wide eyed about him, Johnny. I've heard what he's been what he may
- 5:32even still be a gangster, hoodlum, racketeer. But that's none of my
- 5:38business. The club was legitimate. My job there was on the level and
- 5:43he never got out of line once and now Dott He's always been kind to
- 5:46his mother and loves dogs and children. I wouldn't know except children. He's
- 5:51crazy about them. He was always buying something for Jill, asking about her.
- 5:56And they also shot and killed Milk Precker. I couldn't say, I
- 6:01see, well, you're letting a lot of people down, people here in
- 6:08Branbury that you grew up with, people that love you, your father,
- 6:11Dan Martin. What have they got to do with it? You know,
- 6:13it's a great country up here. I'd like to spend more time in it.
- 6:16And it's a big country, big and beautiful and dangerous like that blizzard
- 6:21outside there. It's not the kind of country that turns out cowards. Cowards.
- 6:28Your father said something yesterday that some people belong in cudies and some don't,
- 6:33and that you're one of the second kind. He was right. The
- 6:36city's made a coward of you. You don't understand. They know it,
- 6:40oh, Mike, Dan, all of them. Of course they'll never mention
- 6:43it, but you're letting them down, and they know it, and you'll
- 6:46know it, Kathy. They don't have a daughter, to think of it.
- 6:48It's not her fear we're talking about. It's yours, all right,
- 6:51I'm scared. I've got reason to be. It's easy for you to talk.
- 6:55You don't know what fear is, what it can do to you.
- 6:58I don't. It can push you and drive you and make you do things
- 7:00you hate yourself for, and it can destroy it. How would you know?
- 7:03How would any of them know? Who haven't felt it, who haven't
- 7:06been there? Nanthy, You are not alone. We've all been there.
- 7:11It's not the fear that's important, it's the courage you bring up to fight
- 7:15it. I've tried, I've I've nearly gotten crazy trying to think it out.
- 7:19But it always comes back to one thing. Jill. She is what
- 7:23counts. Nothing else matters. And if you love her, teacher to grow
- 7:27up without fear, sacrifice anything. If you have to weave in your life,
- 7:30but teach your courage. There's nothing greater you could do for all right?
- 7:38All right? Sorry, I knew what was right, Johnny. I
- 7:45knew old time. Sure, Cush, you did. All you needed was
- 7:48a little push. I want to tell me about it now. I I
- 7:57was here at the club that night when it happened. I stayed after closing
- 8:03I had some presents for Jill and I wanted to wrap them before I took
- 8:05them home. Nick and mil Priker were upstairs in the office. Nick was
- 8:09there, Yes, I could hear them arguing they didn't know I'd stayed.
- 8:13And then go on. I heard Mel yell out. He said no,
- 8:18Nick, No, And then I heard the shots. Yes, I didn't
- 8:22even think. I ran up to the office. Mel was lying on the
- 8:26floor and Nick was standing there with a gun. He told me to get
- 8:28out and to keep quiet. I wanted to keep on living. That's it.
- 8:35Yes. Will you make a statement to the police, testify at the
- 8:37trial. Yes, I'm going. Will you help me, Johnny? Will
- 8:46you stand by me? You know I will. You've got too, because
- 8:48I'm scared. I'll be scared all the way, but I'll do it if
- 8:54you will help me. I'll help you. Kathy all away. Why don't
- 8:58you curl up here and get some Come on, maybe, No, I
- 9:03can't sleep. It's going to be all right, thanks Johnny giving me the
- 9:11push. Oh sure, honey, you know something, Johnny. I'm with
- 9:18Jill. I like you too. She went to sleep with a face against
- 9:26my chest, and after a while, little Jill came tiptoeing in and curled
- 9:31up on the other side, and I sat there holding them both, thinking
- 9:37and waiting for the dawn. So that's what I mean about a million dollar
- 9:41feeling. True, it wasn't my little girl or my big girl either,
- 9:48but for the moment at least, well, that item still goes. I'll
- 9:54still tag that feeling at one million dollars. And I was sorry when the
- 10:01storm was over and a rescue party came up from town because I felt I'd
- 10:07had one moment in a lifetime that I'd never find again. Good went this
- 10:13last look on the beast. Steed went the small name. The big event
- 10:18of the year in Bramburry was the Christmas Eve show in the town hall.
- 10:22There was music and a pageant and singing, and everybody took part in it,
- 10:26from the youngest kid in town to the toughest old grizzled lumberjack from the
- 10:30back hills. Jill was in the children's chorus and old Mike was to operate
- 10:33the spotlights, so they went on ahead. I took Kathy, and since
- 10:37she wasn't quite ready to face people yet, we made a point of getting
- 10:39there late. I didn't care when we got there. As long as I
- 10:43was with her. We slipped in quietly and took seats at the back of
- 10:48the room. The string group from the high school orchestra was playing, and
- 10:52no one noticed us, not even Old Mike, Kathy's father, who was
- 10:54working the spotlights. I hope Jill dzar. She haven't had any time to
- 11:00practice with him, or she'll do all right. We'd been there about ten
- 11:05minutes when somebody else came in and slid into the one seat between us and
- 11:07the door. I didn't look around until I felt Kathy stiffen beside me.
- 11:13It was Nick Shern. Nobody gets excited now, makes any sudden moves.
- 11:16We just sat here quietly. He slid his hand over the feeling inside my
- 11:20coat under my arm. Now back in a runner perfect. I'd left my
- 11:24gun at Kathy's household. Mike had been deweyous about it, but with Benny
- 11:28dead, I'd seen no reason to carry it. And after all, it
- 11:31was Christmas Eve, all right. Never was gonna ease out of here now,
- 11:33and I'd attract no attention from any breaths. And just don't forget one
- 11:39thing, though, and that homelys gun. I knew saying, right at
- 11:43the miller Kathy's back. Let's go, no choice, Cathy, Come on,
- 11:50the back of the room was dark. Nobody paid any attention. Somebody
- 11:54was always leaving or coming back in. Come on, I got a car
- 12:03over at the side here, Johnny, watch your dollar. We'll be right
- 12:09back. Mike. Just gonna get some here, all right, Johnny,
- 12:13But don't go running out before I give you your present. Huh here,
- 12:18and don't uncork that until you're ready for some serious business. All right,
- 12:22I'll read Thanks Mike, Thanks a lot, don't mention it. Good luck,
- 12:26Johnny. Hell, come on, let's get away from here, Johnny,
- 12:33get easy case, Joe'll go back an tell me you're coming here to
- 12:41hear me sing? Listen? Please, did your hands on your pocket?
- 12:48Pick me up? Look, Jill, you run alone? Now, who's
- 12:54that Dan Martin? He's a deputy sheriff and he's a dead shot. Better
- 12:58do like she says, Nick, take your hand out of her pocket and
- 13:00pick her up all. I had reached in my pocket, Johnny and taken
- 13:09my gun. Later, Kathy and I walked around outside. We could still
- 13:22hear the children's cars singing inside. Jill saved our lives. No, she
- 13:31saved Nick's life. What do you mean that present your father gave me Up
- 13:35there at the spotlights, he could see what was happening, and he thought
- 13:39real fast that present was a gun. I had Nick covered from the time
- 13:45we stepped off the porch. I'm glad he didn't move. I'm glad it
- 13:48happened like it did. Yeah, so am. I thought we'd never see
- 13:54those stars up there again. You kept holding yourself, Kathy. You showed
- 13:58a lot of courage. No, but maybe I can learn to show it.
- 14:05I was just thinking, Johnny, looking at the stars up there,
- 14:11there was fear in the world again two years ago, and he had courage.
- 14:26Expense account had him sixteen two hundred and thirty dollars and forty cents incidentals
- 14:30and branburry and transportation for two adults and one child Branburry to New York.
- 14:35Expense account total four hundred and eighty six dollars and twenty cents. End of

- 16:49job by Bob Bailey, and a great job by let's crotch Field and riding
- 16:55this this is the overall plot is not something that uh he easily lends itself
- 17:00to a Christmas story, but they make it work with the focus on courage
- 17:07as well as just the warmth of home and family. That is actually our
- 17:12last Christmas special of twenty thirteen. If you want to hear more, you
- 17:18can check out The War where we've had Christmas specials running since Monday and we'll
- 17:23continue through Christmas Day. That's over at the War do Great Detectives dot net
- 17:30Well Now for something completely different, The Lady was Lethal. Part two Catta
- 17:45Brown Mysteries, Adventures and Excitement and Suspense, based on the best selling novels
- 17:53by the slick storytelling sensation Gotta Brown. Any person in the private eye profession
- 18:21runs the risk of saturn death. But the death of Hank Williams, my
- 18:23pal and partner in the firm of Williams and Eton, came as a double
- 18:27shock because Hank had wired me that he was onto something big, and when
- 18:32I got back, it was too late to ask him what it was.
- 18:34Also, Hank was a guy who never put anything on paper, so I
- 18:37had nothing to give me a lead. But I found that it involved a
- 18:41muscular male named Tiny Lavin and a mean mobstacle Babyface Brill. It also seemed
- 18:48to involve the singer at the Booze Club, a girl named Chili, who
- 18:52was anything. But you're the man who sent the waiter with the message,
- 18:56that's right, you wanted to talk to me about Hank Williams. Yes,
- 19:00he was my partner. I'm Johnny Eaton, glad to know you. Johnny.
- 19:04I'm even glad to know you. Oh why look in your mirror for
- 19:10a couple of good reasons, Chili, you knew Hank, didn't you.
- 19:15Uh huh? When did you last see him? Two maybe three days ago?
- 19:18I'm not sure why nothing's happened to him. Has it only one thing?
- 19:22He's dead? No, Oh, that's not true. It can't be.
- 19:26I'm afraid it can and it is. This afternoon, Hank, he
- 19:33wouldn't listen to me. I told him it was dangerous. What was whatever
- 19:37he was doing. He kept telling me he was onto something big, that
- 19:38he was saving it for his partner. But I knew it was dangerous by
- 19:41the way he talked, dangerous enough to kill him. You know a guy
- 19:45named Levin tiny Lavan, I've heard the name somewhere comes into this club.
- 19:49They tell me big guy smots the guys. I think I know who you
- 19:53mean. What about him? I think he had something to do with it.
- 19:56That's all I liked Hank. He was a nice guy. Anything I
- 20:00can do to help Johnny, I'll do. Thanks. Come in, Joey,
- 20:07I heard that. Oh sorry, I thought you're on your own.
- 20:10It's okay. This is Johnny Eaton. He's Hank Williams's partner. You remember,
- 20:14Hank, Sure, the private dick. This is how wealtham Johnny.
- 20:18He owns the Blues Club, which means he employs me. That makes you
- 20:22a lucky guy, Waltham and I know it. How's Hank. They're looking
- 20:26after him. Very well done at the Morgue. You're joking, nohow he
- 20:32was killed this afternoon. Well, of all the tough breaks. I was
- 20:34telling Johnny that anything I can do to help ip you only to grad.
- 20:38But Hank never talked about his work. No. Well, same thing goes
- 20:41from eating anything. I can do anything at all. Nice. I've you're
- 20:45welcome. If there is anything I look you both up, particularly chilly,
- 20:49but she's got is worth looking at. I picked up a cab from outside
- 20:57the Blues Club and gave him the address of my apartment, went up at
- 21:02the key in the lock and opened the door. There was a light coming
- 21:04from the living room. Automatically, I reached for my gun. Then I
- 21:07remember I wasn't carrying it. I moved into the living room and got a
- 21:11surprise, A beautiful blonde surprise with tear filled eyes. I'm sorry, but
- 21:19I didn't know when you'd be back, and I just had to see you.
- 21:22Well, how flattering can a blonde be? You are, Johnny,
- 21:26eton aren't you unless I've changed in the last ten minutes. The superintendent of
- 21:30the building met me in here. I'm Helen Williams, Hank's sister, but
- 21:37you're in Kentucky. I wired you about Hank. That's why I came up.
- 21:40Got in an hour ago. The caretaker a Hank's apartment house sent me
- 21:44to the police. I saw a Lieutenant Joginson. He told me what had
- 21:48happened, and then I came here. It's tough, Helen. I oh,
- 21:53Hank was a great guy. Yes, yes he was. You go
- 21:59ahead, honey, if you want to cry, it won't worry me any.
- 22:03You can weep a few tears for me too. No, No,
- 22:06I mustn't. Could I could? I have a drink? Sure? Sure,
- 22:10we both have one. What do you do now, Helen, go
- 22:14back to Kentucy. No, not until Hank's murderer is behind bars. I'm
- 22:18staying until he's caught. You got a drink. That might take a long
- 22:22time. I don't care. Where are you going to stay tonight? I
- 22:26hadn't thought about it. I couldn't go back to Hank's apartment not. No,
- 22:33Maybe I could find a hotel, Not at this time. And I
- 22:36tell you what you stay here, I'll take the sofa. You can have
- 22:38my room. In the morning, we'll find you an appointment. Oh thanks,
- 22:42Johnny, Thanks a millionaire. Don't look at me with those trusting eyes.
- 22:47Why not because I don't know that I'm too trustworthy, not whether the
- 22:51witching blonde. Well, I trust you, Johnny. And since I'm going
- 22:56to stay, I might as well be useful. Anyone is decorative as you
- 23:00don't have to worry about being useful. Well, I'm going to be.
- 23:03You'll meet someone in the office now that Hank won't be there. I'll be
- 23:07your secretary. That's fine. Anything that keeps you close by suits me.
- 23:12Jerk your mind off my gendron, think about justice for Hank's killer. Okay,
- 23:18Helen, you're right. I better give you the story so far.
- 23:29The next morning, while Helen was out arranging for Hank's funeral and then seeing
- 23:32about an apartment, I sat in my office waiting for the promised visit from
- 23:34Tiny Lavin and Babyface brill. My desk draw was open and the gun in
- 23:40it had the safety catch off. You are here, her, Seamus,
- 23:45I said, I would be, mister Lavin. That's smart of you,
- 23:48eating real smart. Thanks. The compliment from babyface brill is really something.
- 23:56You'll know our names? Huh, I get a rod? Well here it
- 24:00is, Seamus. Forty thousand dollars is too high? Twenty five grand is
- 24:04the most of bottle pain? And who is the boss? Are you kidding?
- 24:08Okay? Sorry, Levin? The price stays where it is otherwise it's
- 24:12no sale. You don't want to talk like that. Eaton, No,
- 24:15you might wake up dead. Bumping me off still doesn't get you what you
- 24:18want. You won't find out where the stuff is from a copse. Like
- 24:22I said before, we might be able to persuade you to tell us before
- 24:25you kick off. You know what the recipe for fried chicken says, first,
- 24:29catch your bird. You won't be hard to take. Why don't we
- 24:32do it now? I get tired and listen it to its voice says,
- 24:34try it, babyface, Me and this's thirty eight are waiting already, par
- 24:41say your partner Williams figured he was tough too. We'll give you twenty four
- 24:48hours to change your mind eating after that, don't slam the door on your
- 24:52way out, boys, you fresh puck. Calm down, babyface, You'll
- 24:56have plenty of time to devote to mister Eaton twenty four hours from now.
- 25:02If he doesn't wise up, yeah, take a tip eating change your mind.
- 25:11Otherwise I'll have fun changing your face, Johnny Eaton, Johnny is chilly,
- 25:27not with your voice warming up the wire. I've been thinking about what
- 25:30you were telling me last night. I might be able to help a little.
- 25:33That's fine. Could you come over and see me? Sure, let's
- 25:36see. It's just on six o'clock now. I won't be through at the
- 25:38club until nearly midnight, and I don't think it would be a good idea
- 25:41for you to come there. My apartment would be better, much better if
- 25:45you and me and a bottle makes three. The address is Apartment sixteen two
- 25:49four eight parcks great see you at midnight. Midnight is the now, they
- 26:00say, And Chili at midnight was one wow of a witch. We sat
- 26:04side by side on the sectional sofa with the drink's handy, and I told
- 26:07Chili all about tiny Lavin. You have no idea what this thing is that
- 26:11Leavin wants no like I keep saying that people. Hank wasn't a guy to
- 26:15make notes. He carried it all in his head. I pulled the gag
- 26:18that I'd got it on Laban, just to see the reaction. And it's
- 26:22the Boddy believed me if I told him the truth. Probably not. And
- 26:25according to Laban, they searched the office, and they must have searched Hank's
- 26:27apartment and they didn't find it. So what did Hank do with it?
- 26:32Whatever it is you got me, I can't even begin to guess. I
- 26:34think I might be able to help you, Johnny, but you have to
- 26:37trust me. That's a song I've heard before. I lied a little last
- 26:41night. I know Lavan quite well and the other one baby face brill,
- 26:47but I wasn't sure last night whose side you were on. I could help
- 26:49you, but you mustn't ask questions. Oh I mustn't. I like you,
- 26:53Johnny. I want to help you, but I can't help liking you
- 26:56as well, can I. It's a fatal eating charm. Not every time
- 27:00a dame tells me it's working, I find I've lost my wallet. Later
- 27:03on, here's cynical care. I've been around a long time, not around
- 27:07me. Still cynical, Johnny. I'm not sure how you describe the feeling,
- 27:15but I don't think cynical is the word you were going to tell me
- 27:21about eleven. He and Brell are a couple of strong arm men. I
- 27:23didn't think they were charted at Curtains. I tied in with the Blues Club.
- 27:26Huh. It really is a club, but it's membership is secret.
- 27:30So that's what Hank was untia, I guess. So I thought it was
- 27:36just me who runs the place. How Walthome is the manager, but he's
- 27:40only paid. I don't know who really owns it. Ladon gives the artists.
- 27:45Maybe Hank had some proof. Maybe that's why they murdered him to stop
- 27:49him turning it over to the cops. Be your age, Johnny, I
- 27:53joint. The size of the Blues doesn't exist without protection, which includes protection
- 27:59from the cop. Hank must have had something more than that. Anyway.
- 28:03Why did he get so interested? Why would he stick his nose into a
- 28:07tough setup like the Blues? Yeah, that's right, dah. Sometimes I'm
- 28:11so dumb, I can hardly believe it myself. Of course, he had
- 28:15a client. Sure, so find his client and you might get some idea
- 28:18of what he had that they want so badly. He got a bright thud.
- 28:23The only thing is, how do I find him. You should know
- 28:27here's the detective. Who could that be at the sar Well, it's not
- 28:34opportunity, not only nuts once, I guess i'd better go and find out.
- 28:37As she walked out of the room, I thought that with things as
- 28:41they were, I'd be happier safe than sorry, So I eased the gun
- 28:44out of my shoulder host and stood behind the door so that I was hidden
- 28:48from anyone coming into the room. What the idea? Insight, Chili like
- 28:52a good kid. Sorry about this, but it's nothing personal. Just artists.
- 28:57Whose artists? Just artists. I'll get it to your nice and quick.
- 29:02You want nothing about it, honest, like he gave it to Hank
- 29:03Williams. I wouldn't know anything about that. But I can't stand he gabriing,
- 29:10and it won't do your nerves any good either. So long, Chili,
- 29:14nothing personal. You understand, sure she understands what sell me? My
- 29:19glad you were here. I believe you're as tough as they say. Baby
- 29:23Page doesn't seem to like you real, neither likes nor dislikes anybody. It's
- 29:27just a job, as far as he's concerned, a job he's paid to
- 29:30do. The interesting thing is who's paid him to rub you out? I
- 29:36don't know. Well, whoever it is, it's a sign they're getting scared,
- 29:40which means they might make a mistake. And when they do, I'll
- 29:45be right there welcome back. What I told you. It was completely different,
- 30:03and I will give our hero one thing. He's certainly audacious. We
- 30:07have a good mystery on our hands, and we'll find out more about it
- 30:11next week in Part three. Now listener comments and feedback from Scott, who
- 30:17says, I'm not sure how he does it, but Adam finds the best
- 30:21quality old time radio programs, and that makes this podcast stand above all the
- 30:26other old time radio podcasts. I've listened to and subscribe to many many others,
- 30:30and now only have the Great Detectors of Old Time Radio in Mike Queue.
- 30:34Keep up the great work, Adham. Well, thank you so much
- 30:37for your kind comments, Scott, and I appreciate you listening to the show.
