Latest / Most Things Kenobi - A Star Wars Podcast / S2 E20: Defending Obi-Wan's controversial "from a certain point of view" line from ESB
Transcript
- 0:00Hello there control your. Insolence and concentrate it's.
- 0:06Time for most things, Kenobi. Hi everyone, welcome to another
- 0:22episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and
- 0:26all things Star Wars. I'm your host, Leanne.
- 0:29And I'm your host, Lauren. And this episode we actually
- 0:33went to our patrons and we asked them what's an Obi Wan related
- 0:37topic that you would like us to cover.
- 0:40And we got several which we will be using in future episodes.
- 0:45But the one we chose for today was to have a discussion about
- 0:50Obi Wan's famous line of when he was talking to Luke in the
- 0:56original trilogy. And he said from a certain point
- 0:59of view, he gave Luke that explanation as to the bullshit
- 1:05that he kept from that he kept from Luke about Darth Vader.
- 1:11And this is an interesting topic because I don't know that
- 1:15there's a right or wrong dissection of this, of this
- 1:19line, why it was chosen? Why it was given to this
- 1:23character to say so we're just going to have a little chat
- 1:26about it and what we think. It's very polarizing.
- 1:30I've realized people feel pretty strongly like I just did a quick
- 1:34search for some articles and people have feelings about this.
- 1:40Our patron kind of asked us to defend it a bit, and I think
- 1:47it'll be interesting to look at both sides because my default
- 1:52was always to kind of be bothered by it.
- 1:54I I was always bothered by it. Yeah, I can see that, though I
- 1:58can see why anyone would be bothered by it, including Luke.
- 2:04Yeah, it's kind of a big deal. Most people are like are not
- 2:09nice about. It well, no, I, I, I get that I
- 2:12could, I can try and defend it because I I too have thoughts
- 2:17about both sides of this argument of should he have said,
- 2:24should Obi Wan have said that? Why did he say it?
- 2:28Was it defendable etcetera. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:36It has been retconned at least twice on on two different
- 2:39occasions now, possibly more, but just with the quick research
- 2:43I did. How was it retconned?
- 2:47Well, the first time was from the book Star Wars Aftermath,
- 2:52Empire's End. Apparently there's a prayer from
- 2:55the wills. Oh no, not the wills.
- 2:59Oh, it always comes back to the will.
- 3:02I know now they always write in these sing songy like any time
- 3:07people reference the wills they write in like sing songy poetry
- 3:10which I don't know where that comes from.
- 3:12But. The the prayer is the truth in
- 3:16our soul is that nothing is true.
- 3:18The question of life is what then do we do?
- 3:23God, I hate that. The burden is ours.
- 3:25Yeah. The penance we hew, the force
- 3:29binds us all from a certain point of view.
- 3:33So they were arguing. This article I was reading was
- 3:37arguing that it was a religious thing that Obi Wan was falling
- 3:43back on, like a religious explanation for himself.
- 3:47This was before the Kenobi series came out.
- 3:50That's the second explanation, you know.
- 3:54I don't know if I believe the religious business here with the
- 3:57wills. I know the wills are thrown in
- 3:59just to answer anything that we can't answer, you know, as a as
- 4:03a convenient escape, yeah, from whatever the the point of the
- 4:08topic is. But I don't know if Obi Wan
- 4:10would choose to rely on that in that moment with Luke.
- 4:16Well, like there's never been reference to Obi Wan paying
- 4:19attention to the wills. Yoda.
- 4:21Being pre and qui God, but not Obi Wan.
- 4:26So I don't know, that seemed like an easy explanation.
- 4:31And yeah, I mean, you know, as a writer, maybe the author of that
- 4:34book was like, oh, that'd be a really clever way to tie it
- 4:37back. But I don't really buy it as a a
- 4:40way for Obi Wan to explain or excuse his explanation to Luke.
- 4:45That's a weak argument to me. Yeah, yeah, I I agree with that.
- 4:49I don't think it's weak. Why do you think he said it at
- 4:54your heart of in your heart of hearts?
- 4:55Why do you think Obi Wan chose to phrase it this this way with
- 4:59Luke in that moment? I have two answers and it I have
- 5:02the answer from before the Kenobi series existed.
- 5:05OK, let's go with that. So before, I think it's because
- 5:10Obi Wan and Yoda needed Luke or Leia to do something for them.
- 5:17They needed the Sith defeated not just them, but the whole
- 5:20Galaxy, right? They were the chosen children to
- 5:23like, right, to vindicate or, you know, Vanquish the Galaxy.
- 5:28And they were afraid that knowing the truth would make it
- 5:34harder for Luke or Leia to do that.
- 5:38And it and they were. I agree.
- 5:40Yeah, of course. I mean, even though in Empire
- 5:45Strikes Back, you see Luke's greatest fear is turning into
- 5:48Vader, like being dehumanized, being evil at the core.
- 5:54You see that in The Cave, which we've talked about.
- 5:57But when he finds out in Return of the Jedi that they were
- 6:03basically asking him to commit patricide and that they were
- 6:06going to let him find out after he had done it.
- 6:09Yeah. So that to me, sounds like they
- 6:15didn't want to mess up the potential.
- 6:19It was like serving a greater good.
- 6:21Yeah. They were willing to sacrifice
- 6:23Luke and Leia's potential mental health and like, and, you know,
- 6:31goodness knows the baggage that would come with killing your own
- 6:34father without knowing it was your father.
- 6:36It was very Greek mythology. But they were willing to allow
- 6:39the sacrifice of those two characters for the greater good.
- 6:43And I don't. I don't like that.
- 6:46Well, no. What what is your opinion after
- 6:48I'm I'm getting all this out of the way because I don't know
- 6:51that I know your answer on any of this.
- 6:53I know that mean you have casually like thrown it about
- 6:56that He should have said that he should have done that better,
- 6:58but we've never really got to the nitty gritty.
- 7:00What? What did the Kenobi series
- 7:02change for you? I don't know if it really did
- 7:05change the motivation. I think they tried very hard to
- 7:08change the motivation. So now that it is Obi Wan really
- 7:14believed Anakin said I killed. Yeah, yeah, true.
- 7:18Vader said I killed Anakin Skywalker.
- 7:21You didn't. I did like on and, and some
- 7:24people take that differently. I always have taken that to mean
- 7:28like Anakin purposefully destroyed the parts of himself
- 7:32or so he thought that he could. Yeah.
- 7:35And not not to like absolve Obi Wan.
- 7:39I feel like he was kind of like throwing that in Obi Wan's face.
- 7:43A. 1000% I think it was very self-serving and kind of
- 7:47arrogant, which is par for the course here, but.
- 7:52In in character. In a way it also absolved Obi
- 7:56Wan from any guilt, which I don't think Anakin or Vader at
- 7:59that moment meant to do. Yeah, I think you're right.
- 8:03Yeah, and I think that allowed Obi Wan to make like a mental
- 8:07shift of he is dead to me. So I can, you know, process it
- 8:13that way. But that's a that is not healthy
- 8:17for. No.
- 8:20And then to explain to like, a child later, I mean, he's 18.
- 8:25Whatever young man. Yeah, the way he explains
- 8:28everything to Luke is just avoiding the real truth.
- 8:34But again, how could you tell a person the real truth?
- 8:38And that's where I soften on it because when I think of how is
- 8:42Obi Wan supposed to tell Luke? What?
- 8:45It's. True, real Father was, you know.
- 8:48In my opinion, I don't think when they're having their
- 8:51initial like meet and greet on Tatooine where you know he's
- 8:56invited into Obi Wan's cave Hut. Humble abode.
- 9:01Humble abode, if you will, his vacation house in the sands of
- 9:05Tatooine. That was not a time to unleash
- 9:09anything on Luke, you know, and Obi Wan from from his point of
- 9:15view, has kind of settled on what we've learned from the
- 9:20Kenobi series. You know, granted, we didn't
- 9:23have the Kenobi series when any of this happened.
- 9:26So right, he's had time to just settle on anything at this point
- 9:31without even bringing in the Kenobi series.
- 9:34I don't know that I would have told him.
- 9:37I don't know that I would have said any of that to him
- 9:40initially. And Even so, shouldn't he as a
- 9:43teacher in some fashion allow Luke to find that out on his
- 9:47own? They probably weren't banking on
- 9:49Vader telling him. Yeah, I mean, according to what
- 9:52Yoda says in Return of the Jedi, he was like, Oh yeah,
- 9:55unfortunate. This.
- 9:56Is yes, yeah, unfortunate that that piece of information was
- 10:00revealed, but at the same time in that revelation is what
- 10:09propelled everything anyway. So perhaps they didn't need to
- 10:12tell Luke in the 1st place. At least, like you said, it
- 10:15would have prevented what happened in the way that it
- 10:19happened from transpiring. I just don't know that there was
- 10:23a good way to tell him should should the truth come out more
- 10:26plainly. Sure, but but like, is a force
- 10:30ghost even capable of that? Probably Obi Wan's force ghost
- 10:34is. But yeah, I mean, I just don't
- 10:37see how it could have happened anyway I.
- 10:42Don't know when, like maybe the truth it, you know, if you want
- 10:46to look at it as people are a collection of their lives and as
- 10:51we change through experiences, we become more or less receptive
- 10:56to ideas or openness. You know, if he had told and
- 11:01first of all, he had no time to tell Luke in A New Hope.
- 11:03He died within like a few hours of the meeting.
- 11:06Basically yes. So there was no opportunity to
- 11:09really sit down and and bridge that gap there.
- 11:13But Luke probably wouldn't have been ready to hear it until he
- 11:18had gone through everything up to Empire Strikes Back and even
- 11:22that it was extremely devastating.
- 11:25But he defaulted then after that into nothing at all that Obi Wan
- 11:31and Yoda expected from Luke. They thought he was going to be
- 11:35willing to do this horrible thing they wanted him to do.
- 11:39But instead Luke chose passivity and to try to find the good in
- 11:46his father's still, which Yoda and Obi Wan had totally given up
- 11:51on. Which with the Kenobi series.
- 11:54Like with good reason. We have to consider the
- 11:58motivation of any of this. And if you think about Obi Wan,
- 12:02let's say he had told Luke the actual literal truth, because
- 12:08what Obi Wan said to Luke wasn't a lie.
- 12:12It wasn't a lie necessarily. It was was it plainly spoken?
- 12:17No. Has Obi Wan ever plainly spoke
- 12:21spoken probably only to Anakin. OK, so like and.
- 12:25Even then and. Even then, it was still, you
- 12:28know, polished a little bit, 'cause he's fucking Obi Wan.
- 12:31And like Sateen said, the collection of half truths is
- 12:36hyperbole. Known as Obi Wan Kenobi, right?
- 12:38She said it right, so and she knew him better than most people
- 12:43and she knew him. She knew him when he was younger
- 12:45and not so stern in his ways, you know, not stern, but like
- 12:50strict in his ways, settled in his ways.
- 12:55So the motivation of any of this was to confront Vader point
- 13:01blank period, right? For Luke to do this, having just
- 13:07met Obi Wan, he gets the lightsaber.
- 13:10Obi Wan's telling him about his father, how he fought in the
- 13:13Clone Wars and was a very good friend.
- 13:15OK, all truths. What if Obi Wan would have told
- 13:19Luke in that moment? By the way, here's what this is.
- 13:23What went down? Would Luke have even believed
- 13:25him? He just met this man.
- 13:27Yeah. It could have caused discourse
- 13:30maybe, like who the fuck are you walking in here telling me about
- 13:33my father, you know, blah blah blah.
- 13:36Like an angsty teenager who's being confronted with the weight
- 13:40of the fucking Galaxy. In every sense, yeah.
- 13:43Yeah, he's not ready for that shit.
- 13:45No. And you know, he wasn't told
- 13:49about Leia either. Yeah, and they all knew about
- 13:53her, too. Yeah, and for what it's worth,
- 13:55Liotta really never even said anything about Leia up front
- 14:00either. He gave a half truth Riddle in
- 14:02the end that Luke had to piece together.
- 14:05I know what is. Wrong with these fucking.
- 14:08Jedi, Why? Can't they just?
- 14:09Say what they mean. I don't know, my God.
- 14:12Save so much time. Seriously, if they would have
- 14:16all of them just had a normal conversation, we could have
- 14:19avoided all. That's it.
- 14:20Trouble and it started with Obi Wan and Anakin if they'd have
- 14:23just talked through this shit anyway.
- 14:26It's true that's its own episode, but the therapy needed
- 14:30by both Obi Wan and Anakin will be an upcoming episode.
- 14:37OK, so let's so Obi Wan doesn't tell Luke that Vader is his true
- 14:43father is Anakin. So Luke goes into this trying to
- 14:48avenge his father, right? He was killed by Vader.
- 14:52So this this is a noble thing that he's being positioned.
- 14:56You will avenge the Jedi and and myself and you know, whatever
- 15:00else Obi Wan had positioned him for and Luke's going into it
- 15:05much more courageous I think. Cuz you know when you're
- 15:07avenging something that was wronged or someone that was
- 15:12wronged, nothing can stop you cuz you're doing it for the
- 15:15right reason. So again, to your point, Obi Wan
- 15:20and Yoda needed him to do something.
- 15:23Whatever. But had Obi Wan told him, would
- 15:27Luke have gone into it with the same?
- 15:28He'd have been doubt. There's a lot of self doubt,
- 15:31questioning, questioning the Jedi, questioning Obi Wan, Yoda,
- 15:37you know, all of this stuff. He might have just dropped it
- 15:40all and, you know, just went with Luke and Leia and Han and
- 15:46the whole group and fought for the Rebellion and just never
- 15:48encountered any of it and avoided it.
- 15:52Yeah. So I'm I'm actually glad that
- 15:54Obi Wan didn't tell him. Yeah, it would have definitely
- 15:58reset the course of the story. There might not have been a
- 16:01story. So of course it adds intrigue
- 16:05and it's layers that are more interesting and especially to
- 16:09realize as Luke, to realize that the people you've been trusting
- 16:13all this time are kind of not really telling you everything
- 16:17you really need to know it. It then adds to the layer for
- 16:20the audience of wondering if Vader and the Emperor could
- 16:24change his mind then right? I mean, from a film standpoint,
- 16:27that's the goal here is right, The light and the dark.
- 16:31Like who do you trust? Make it believable that he could
- 16:34go either way, you know? Yeah, but I think it's also
- 16:37necessary in the hero's journey to confront that which plagues
- 16:43you through your growth story. And that's what makes Luke so
- 16:47compelling in the end. Does it pivot off of that one
- 16:50line that Obi Wan delivers? No.
- 16:52But it is an element in his story that should be considered.
- 16:56Yeah, Espe. Well, especially because Obi Wan
- 16:59uses the phrase he betrayed and murdered your father, not he
- 17:03died, not, you know, and that's just a such a particular way of
- 17:11phrasing it that it's like it's almost like, are you trying to
- 17:16put a seed of revenge in there because it's not quite what
- 17:22happened. I mean, and OK, so I also want
- 17:24to ask you and like dive into from a certain point of view, is
- 17:29that just total like a bullshit thing Obi Wan is telling himself
- 17:34so he can believe that what he did was the right thing?
- 17:38How do you feel about that phrasing particularly?
- 17:42Well, I don't think he's wrong. I think he set it up.
- 17:46I don't think he's wrong in saying that from a certain point
- 17:50of view. I think first of all, I think
- 17:51it's petty because you're right, Obi Wan from a certain point of
- 17:58view, but it's Luke's point of view that matters here.
- 18:01So take yourself out of it. This isn't about you and what
- 18:05the fuck happened with Anakin? Maybe it is, but right now it's
- 18:09about Luke. OK?
- 18:14I think maybe Obi Wan did not want to be wrong, but he didn't
- 18:19know how to tell Luke and that was the only way he could tell
- 18:21him without being wrong and yet not also exposing the absolute
- 18:25truth. There's some what's the word
- 18:30like? There's some goal in it.
- 18:33Yeah, yeah, yeah. He has like a motivation I guess
- 18:38or. I would have been happier if Obi
- 18:41Wan would have said, look, Luke, you had to find out on your own
- 18:45and this was the only way to do it.
- 18:46That would have been true. Yeah, that would have at least
- 18:51revealed his motivation a little more instead of being like, Oh,
- 18:55well, from a certain point of view, anything can exist, you
- 18:58know, like. Yeah, 'cause I'm inclined to
- 19:01feel like there is truth and there are lies and, and man,
- 19:07Mothma kind of talks about that in her speech, right?
- 19:10Of like what is said and what is known to be true, yes.
- 19:13Oh, that's a good point. Damn.
- 19:15And that's just it's human nature, right?
- 19:18Like they always say the victor writes the history, that kind of
- 19:21thing. So of of course you are going to
- 19:23have two perspectives that like say there's two people in an in
- 19:27an argument or in a a conflict. Let's say each person is coming
- 19:33with their own perspective. So yeah, OK, there's a certain
- 19:36point of view. But like, did Anakin Skywalker
- 19:41murder Anakin Skywalker? Not physically.
- 19:46Not actually. Like metaphorically, he disposed
- 19:50of the old self. OK.
- 19:52Right, exactly. They should have said like
- 19:54metaphorically, yes, it was true.
- 19:57Like if you're Luke, you'd have been like fuck your stupid
- 20:01metaphors. Like I would have just liked the
- 20:04actual truth. But.
- 20:05But would he have, would Luke have liked the actual truth?
- 20:09He thinks he might have 'cause he feels betrayed in this
- 20:11moment. He feels led on in this moment.
- 20:15But I think that's where Obi Wan's experience and knowledge
- 20:18and wisdom comes in with Yeah, I mean, from a certain point of
- 20:27view, Psych got him. We got him.
- 20:35It's not right, none of it's right, but.
- 20:38Oh my gosh. Well, you know, like Yoda.
- 20:40Also is there's. OK, so apparently there's
- 20:43missing dialogue from Yoda and Luke's conversation from Return
- 20:48of the Jedi where Yoda's about to die.
- 20:50Oh, right. And it was cut out.
- 20:53So again, can we really take it as part of the argument because
- 20:56it was cut out for a reason? It was left on the cutting room
- 21:00floor for whatever reason. Yeah, but it was that Yoda told
- 21:05Luke that Obi Wan had always wanted to tell Luke the truth,
- 21:08but Yoda wouldn't let him. Oh, now that that throws a bit
- 21:12of a wrench in it because I could see Yoda not wanting Obi
- 21:16Wan to tell him because Yoda, after all, had more of a goal
- 21:20than, well, they were all Bale. Also, what about the fucking
- 21:26uncle and aunt and aunt and uncle?
- 21:27They never told him. I know there's there's, I know
- 21:30there's more complicity in this lack of telling Luke than just
- 21:34Obi Wan. When there's also this
- 21:37implication in the Kenobi series that first of all, Obi Wan had
- 21:40never heard of Darth Vader being alive in the.
- 21:44Galaxy. Right, because he knew that
- 21:46Anakin's Sith name was Vader. He saw the footage in the Jedi
- 21:51Temple. I think it was in the Jedi
- 21:53Temple, right? Where he's, like, looking up
- 21:55recordings or something like that.
- 21:56Yeah. It was on that hollow hologram,
- 21:59yeah. Which is in the Emperor's.
- 22:02It was in Palpatine's chambers. So does that mean the Jedi could
- 22:05see? Like did they have a listening
- 22:07device or something? Palpatine's office.
- 22:09I'm sure he had cameras everywhere 'cause he was a
- 22:11paranoid freak probably he had to have eyes on everything.
- 22:16Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yes, it's true.
- 22:18So, OK, so Obi Wan knew that he knew Anakin was Vader.
- 22:24You said that Thrawn knew Anakin was Vader.
- 22:27Correct sensed he did together. He never had verbal
- 22:32confirmation, but yeah, he's one of those Thinker observers.
- 22:36He could feel it. Yeah.
- 22:38Yeah. OK, So we know Riva knew.
- 22:42Does Owen and Baru, do they know?
- 22:46Does Beale Ogana know? He knows Anakin is dead, and he
- 22:50even says to Obi Wan in the Kenobi series Anakin's gone.
- 22:54Like move on basically. Again, though, gone is a very
- 23:00loose word. Yeah, I mean, they all knew he
- 23:03turned right. Well, at least Bale knew who
- 23:06knew what Owen and Peru. That's.
- 23:08What they? Didn't really say anything.
- 23:11It's very. It's like a small group of
- 23:14people and you're not quite sure who knows what, but they all
- 23:18know something bad happened. Yeah, and they all chose to not
- 23:22tell the truth to any of the children.
- 23:25No either of the children. Well Obi Wan, Obi Wan did get
- 23:30down on Leia's eye level and tell her who her mother was and
- 23:36who her father was via characteristics.
- 23:40Remember. Yeah.
- 23:41And that she's a product of the best of those two and.
- 23:46Yeah. Like that's Obi Wan also telling
- 23:50Leia without telling Leia. Yeah, yes, yeah.
- 23:55So. It it falls in line with like
- 24:03all of this. I don't know.
- 24:06I I can see both angles of like why Obi Wan and Yoda and the
- 24:14aunt and uncle and all the other accessories in all this didn't
- 24:18tell Luke but I can also see why if he had said something I think
- 24:26it would have changed the trajectory slightly.
- 24:29Yes, totally, because. How do you just come out and say
- 24:32that you don't? And not fill the recipient with
- 24:37fear, like completely like it would have just terrified Luke
- 24:41and then he would have been paralyzed.
- 24:43I I think especially when he was younger, you know when.
- 24:45Let's let's also not forget that they're trying to avoid Luke
- 24:49becoming Anakin in in all of this, sending him into The Cave
- 24:54there, you know, all of the challenges and there's just.
- 25:00It gave him much. It really gave him the
- 25:03opportunity to be his own man without the fear hanging over
- 25:09him. Of Am I predestined to fall like
- 25:12my father? Absolutely.
- 25:15Granted, that all changes after Empire Strikes Back, but at
- 25:18least to that point, Luke had the ability to make his own
- 25:22choices of the kind of person he wanted to be.
- 25:25Yeah. And so I agree with you.
- 25:28Like, if if they had told him that sooner, that probably would
- 25:31not have been the case. He would have just felt that
- 25:33burden his whole life. Again though, did Obi Wan need
- 25:38to say it the way he did? No, there were other ways of
- 25:42phrasing it. I guess the question is why
- 25:45didn't George Lucas choose to write that line for this
- 25:48character? Has he ever said?
- 25:57I'm sure I have. There was like there in my VHS
- 26:00copies. They had very in depth
- 26:03interviews with George Lucas before them and I used to watch
- 26:06them all the time but I haven't been able to watch.
- 26:08My VHS copies had those. Yeah, I I remember.
- 26:12They're probably on YouTube at this point now so I could
- 26:15probably look them up, but I do remember him talking about
- 26:18certain things about Vader in particular, but I don't remember
- 26:21if he went into why Obi Wan shows from a certain point of
- 26:27view. I've always loved the line too
- 26:30and Return of the Jedi when Yoda's passed away and Luke goes
- 26:33back outside and Obi Wan appears in the fog.
- 26:36Yeah. And Luke just very casually says
- 26:41you told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father like so not.
- 26:45Emotionally, right? Totally like.
- 26:49I think I would have been a little bit madder.
- 26:53Well, the inflection in his voice is like someone listing
- 26:57off a grocery list is just like you're very benign you.
- 27:02Sent me out to get milk and I brought.
- 27:04Yeah, I brought exactly. That's.
- 27:11Funny. Precisely.
- 27:14That's exactly. Why did you put peanuts down
- 27:17when you really wanted almonds? I can't believe it, Obi Wan, why
- 27:24would you? Do this.
- 27:25Oh my God. That's fun.
- 27:36I just think at the end of the day, he probably should have
- 27:42just said you had to find out on your own.
- 27:45I couldn't have told you. End of the controversy.
- 27:52Yeah, it's sad that people have taken it to mean that Obi Wan
- 27:57was a terrible person. And I don't think that.
- 28:00Shitty master. And yeah, I don't think that
- 28:03either. I mean, what would you do if you
- 28:05had watched your best friend? Oh, it's or.
- 28:08Like someone you kind of consider a son or a brother,
- 28:11Like watch this trajectory. How would you then tell their
- 28:15child? Put yourself in Obi Wan's shoes
- 28:17for a second. I would have had to consult like
- 28:19a psychologist and like what is the best way forward?
- 28:24I need some help because that is a very difficult conversation to
- 28:29initiate. How would you do it?
- 28:31It seems almost impossible. So I that's why I don't I don't
- 28:35hold it against Obi Wan. Really, truly, I think the fear
- 28:39of Luke turning into Anakin and perhaps eventually a Sith, you
- 28:46know, was very real and you had to very, very, very lightly
- 28:52tread around this topic. And I think Obi Wan, being the
- 28:57the wise man that he is, even in Force ghost form, treaded very
- 29:04lightly and still did not lie to the boy.
- 29:07You know, I'm sure that I bet you any money Yoda told him what
- 29:12to say. It just seems like a Yoda line,
- 29:15doesn't it? Yeah, it feels like it.
- 29:17Yeah. That like that kind of bullshit
- 29:20line that's not really telling you anything.
- 29:23And yeah, it's, it's basically, it's like the equivalent of if
- 29:31you don't know, I'm not going to tell you kind of thing.
- 29:34Yeah, like if you can't figure it out on your own, then I'm not
- 29:36telling. You, you don't deserve to know.
- 29:39Yeah, fuck off. Exactly.
- 29:41But yeah. Exactly, He didn't do that.
- 29:43I mean, at least Obi Wan didn't do that.
- 29:44He didn't treat Luke like he was stupid.
- 29:47That's one thing. He always trusted Luke to come
- 29:51to whatever decision he wanted to, even though there were signs
- 29:55there of like hastiness and wanting to rush to the, you
- 30:00know, go save people, which you got to think through.
- 30:02But if he thought too much, if they'd have told him about
- 30:05Vader, he would have that would have just overwhelmed his
- 30:09thought process and would have changed everything.
- 30:12He would have questioned. I'm convinced if Obi Wan would
- 30:15have told him the straight truth.
- 30:17And very early on, you know, before any of this happened,
- 30:22like like Return of the Jedi happened and and most of Empire
- 30:25Strikes Back, he would have gotten stuck in a thought loop
- 30:31of did my father do what he thought was right?
- 30:34Why did he do it? And then we have to bring up the
- 30:37the fucking he was trying to save Padme in the end with his
- 30:40own selfish means. And the Palpatine, how do you
- 30:44start? Once you open that door, you got
- 30:46to walk through it and tell the whole story that Palpatine did
- 30:51the whole you know, grooming him from a young age, turning him
- 30:55against the order. You know, all of Obi Wan and the
- 30:58orders faults for raising him. You know this, that, Ahsoka, you
- 31:03know, and this, that and the other thing.
- 31:05It's a whole mess. Yeah, it really is.
- 31:10There isn't anyone really to back up Obi Wan's story.
- 31:14There aren't any other witnesses to say what he's saying is the
- 31:18truth. Where the fuck is Ahsoka?
- 31:19Nobody knows, not Obi Wan. Right, I know, right?
- 31:22Like Ahsoka's just non existent and then everyone else is dead
- 31:26and the only other person who was there was the Emperor and
- 31:28can you trust a word out of his mouth?
- 31:30No, of course not. So.
- 31:32And who knew that Luke would end up in a room with the Emperor?
- 31:35Had he known all this stuff, he could have asked the Emperor,
- 31:39and the Emperor could have fed him 1001 lies and we'd be no
- 31:43closer to saving the Galaxy than before.
- 31:46So it probably was a good thing that it wasn't straight up
- 31:51given. Yeah, yeah.
- 31:55And lucky for us, Luke is more Padme than he was able to look
- 32:00for the good in people and seriously letting his fear take
- 32:05control. That's, I mean, that's a whole
- 32:08nother thing of like he had a stable family life and stuff,
- 32:12which we've talked about with regards to Anakin and how.
- 32:15You. Know the fear of his mother and
- 32:18all of. That just terrible.
- 32:20Plays into it. So yeah, it's very, it's fun
- 32:23that there's, there's this this element of Star Wars where you
- 32:28can kind of go round and round with some some subjects and not
- 32:32really necessarily fall on a solution, but it's a fun thing
- 32:36to play around with because it is so complex and layered.
- 32:40And I think everyone's opinion on what they think about that
- 32:43line is completely valid. Yeah, yes, I think so too.
- 32:48It's just one of those things like where there is no right or
- 32:50wrong answer. Could it have been done with
- 32:53more tact? Absolutely.
- 32:56All of them could have used a little more tact.
- 32:59But that's not why we're here. No, that's not why we love Star
- 33:04Wars. It's true.
- 33:07It's well and it's all, everyone's going to interpret it
- 33:11from their own life experiences and it's going to all be from
- 33:14their certain point of view, so. There it is.
- 33:27Our question to you is pretty straightforward for this
- 33:30episode. What are your thoughts on that
- 33:33line? Obi Wan saying to Luke, Well,
- 33:36from a certain certain point of view, he told him the truth
- 33:39about his father. How do you feel?
- 33:42Yes, this is your chance to vent your feelings.
- 33:45Yes, And no matter how long it is, we'll choose one or two or
- 33:49what whatever we get, we'll read them all.
- 33:52But we'll read one or two next on our next episode at the end.
- 33:56So please chime in and let us know.
- 34:01And our next episode is going to be a recap or review of Tales of
- 34:06the Underworld. We have not watched it yet
- 34:08because we were in an AND or cyclone.
- 34:14Yes. Yeah, and for some reason they
- 34:17decided to release those at the same time.
- 34:19So we definitely have not seen it yet.
- 34:21So we will watch all the episodes and then do a recap
- 34:25episode for for that. Not next week, but the week
- 34:29after. We're back to our every other
- 34:30week schedule. So we'll see you back then.
