- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Hello everyone, welcome back to the Astrology for Beginners podcast.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Stephanie Kate Boucher, and I am so happy to have you here.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: This is the podcast for you if you have ever wanted to learn how to read a natal
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: chart or were kind of interested in astrology and wished that you understood more
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: about it but didn't know where to begin or it seemed too complicated and you didn't
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: have the time or the resources to invest in learning it.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: My goal is to break things down for you episode by episode in the most simplified
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: way that I can so that you can learn to speak the language of the stars.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Thank you for learning astrology with me.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Hey astrology friends,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: today we are going to talk some more about the planets and specifically we're going
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: to talk about something called essential dignity.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And essential dignity or the essential dignity of a planet refers to how well a
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: planet functions relative to the sign that it is in.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: You may or may not know at this point,
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: depending on how long you've been working with astrology or how deep your current
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: knowledge is,
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: that all planets have certain signs that they function really well in and others
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: that they don't function particularly well in because the energy of that sign isn't
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: aligned with the energy of that planet.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And when a planet is in a sign that it functions well in,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: or that it enjoys being in because it can function smoothly there,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: it's said to be dignified.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And conversely,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: when a planet is in a sign that it doesn't really enjoy being in because it doesn't
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: function smoothly there,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: or that signs energy and nature make functioning difficult for the planet,
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: it's said to be debilitated.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And either one of those things,
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: a planet's dignity or debility,
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: impacts the way that planet's energy is expressed in your life or the way that you
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: are able to integrate that planet's energy into your being or your personality.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: If you have a planet in your chart that's dignified,
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: then that planet's energy,
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: things tend to go really smoothly.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: That planet doesn't tend to be a problem for you or doesn't present any real
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: concern for you on a regular basis.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And you just don't have to worry about that part of your life all that much,
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: maybe in comparison to some other areas.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And in fact, if you have a planet like this, it may turn out to be one of your key strengths in life.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: It's a planet you can really maximize and use to its full capacity,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: assuming that it doesn't have a lot of other things going on that are difficult for
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: that planet,
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: like very difficult aspects and things like that.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Now, if you have a planet that's considered debilitated, it doesn't mean you're doomed.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: First of all, I want to get that right out there up front.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: It does not mean that you're doomed or that you can't or won't have a level of
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: functionality or enjoyment in the parts of your life represented by that planet's energy.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: That's not what this means.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: At least that's not how I interpret it.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: But it can mean,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: that you may struggle with some aspect of that planet's energy more in some way or another.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And part of what you're trying to learn right now is how to overcome some of those
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: challenges and get better at integrating that planetary energy that you struggle with.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: This is always going to be about learning and personal growth and development.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So it can be a clue that this is one of the things that you're here to examine and look at and work on.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And quite possibly, this is karma that you've carried in from another life.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: It's also possible that you chose that astrology because you wanted to get creative
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: with your human experiences here and you wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary,
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: a little unique.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: so that you could learn how to express a certain planet's energy in a way that's
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: different from what most people do with it most of the time.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: It would be like saying, how can I come up with a really unique way of using this planet?
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Or how can I use this planet in new ways that maybe I haven't considered before?
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: So it can be a little like an experiment or an adventure that you haven't had yet.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And if you figure out how to leverage creativity in this area or leverage the
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: strengths that can come from doing things a different way,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: it might even turn out to be one of your strengths.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: So there are four essential dignities in astrology,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: and these four essential dignities are called rulership or a planet being in domicile,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: quote unquote,
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: in domicile.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Exaltation, Detriment, and Fall.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: And we're going to talk about each one.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Rulership, or when a planet is said to be in domicile, means that a planet is in the sign that it rules.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: It's in its own sign.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: As you may remember from prior episodes and handouts, every sign has a planetary ruler.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Aries is ruled by Mars, Taurus is ruled by Venus, Gemini is ruled by Mercury, and on and on.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: And by the way,
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: there is a handout in the show notes for this episode that will contain a table
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: denoting the four essential dignities for every planet.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: I'll put the link to that in the show notes.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: You can look at that now while you listen if that helps you, or just keep it on hand for later.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: But a planet is in domicile when it's in the sign that it rules.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: When a planet is in domicile,
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: it allows that planet to operate in the smoothest possible way without friction,
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: and it allows that planet to function powerfully at maximum strength.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: is also able to more fully express its most positive attributes rather than falling
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: into its more negative attributes.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Because remember that every planet has both positive and negative qualities associated with it.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Now, this concept of being in domicile is not unlike a human being who is inside their own home, right?
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: If you think about all of the places you go or the places you visit each day in
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: your waking life,
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: where is it that you feel most comfortable or most powerful?
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Where are you able to go about your business with the least amount of confusion and the most assuredness?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Where are you able to let it all hang out and just be yourself unapologetically?
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Probably your own home.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: You know how to get things done when you're at home.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: You know how your house works.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: You know where all the light switches are so you can walk down the hallway in the
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: middle of the night in the dark and flip one on without tripping and falling down first.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: You can cook a meal for yourself quickly and easily because you know where all the
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: utensils are and how the appliances work and where you keep the salt.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: It's a lot easier than trying to cook in someone else's kitchen when you don't know
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: where anything is or how things work.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: You know that your furnace makes that weird hissing sound every hour,
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: and so it doesn't freak you out when you hear it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: It's also where you're free to be yourself and do the things you like to do without criticism.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Hopefully you feel like that at home anyway.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: It's where you can relax into yourself and just be yourself and not have to put on
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: any special appearances or social personas or anything like that.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: And hopefully,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: a lot of the time,
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: you're in a pretty good mood at home,
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: especially after coming back to it after being out in the rest of the world.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: It can be a sigh of relief.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: This is a planet in domicile.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: So if you have Mars and Aries,
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: for example,
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: then Mars gets to be its most Mars-like self when it's hanging out in that sign.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: This is going to be Mars energy in its purest and most undiluted form.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Mars energy is really maximized with this placement.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Mars here is going to have a strong drive
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: lots of dynamic energy and vitality.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: It's going to be very bold and assertive.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: It's going to be confident.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It's going to be direct.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: It's going to make decisions quickly.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And it's probably a little impulsive, but definitely decisive.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: It's going to be independent, possibly fiercely independent, competitive, and brave.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: This is a courageous or even audacious Mars.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: This is Mars functioning as a perfect Mars prototype because there aren't any
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: additional planetary energies or the planetary energy associated with another sign
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: clouding it up.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: So which planets are in domicile in which signs, you might ask?
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: It is in the chart that I just talked about,
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: the handout for this week,
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: but I can also run through them really quickly now.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: The sun is in domicile in Leo because the sun rules the sign of Leo.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And so the sun's qualities or persona can be expressed in its most pure form there in the sign of Leo.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: The moon is in domicile in Cancer.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: That's where it feels most comfortable doing its moon-like things and being its
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: most nurturing,
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: caring self,
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: taking care of family and loved ones and things like that.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Mercury is in domicile in Gemini and also in Virgo.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Mercury rules two signs, so it's considered to be in domicile in two places.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Venus is in domicile in both Taurus and in Libra, same type of thing.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Venus also rules two signs.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Mars is in domicile in Aries, as I just said, but it's also in domicile in Scorpio.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Scorpio is actually one of those few signs that has two planetary rulers.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Some signs have a traditional ruler, and in this case with Scorpio, it's Mars.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: And it has a modern ruler, which is Pluto.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: even though Mars is in domicile in Scorpio,
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: it's still going to be a different expression of Mars than Mars in Aries.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: It's a pure expression of Mars energy, but it expresses a different side of Mars.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Mars in Aries is very direct and action-oriented and impulsive, as we just talked about.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Mars in Aries is like the soldier that charges into battle on a moment's notice
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: with their sword held high,
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: ready to strike.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: There's that idea of springing into action quickly here in Aries.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Mars in Scorpio, though, is also about action because Mars always represents actions.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: But it's a much more deliberate, strategic, sustained type of action.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Mars and Aries wants to do things right now.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: But Mars and Scorpio is about using your actions to play the long game.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: It isn't the soldier running into battle.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: This is the general.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: who is designing strategies for the actions of the rest of the troops.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: The general executes action but has a wider vision of what needs to be done in
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: order to reach a goal that could be very difficult and might take a long time.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: It wants to maximize success or the possibility of success with planned premeditated actions.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Mars in Scorpio is a mastermind.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: And interestingly, Taylor Swift, I think, has her Mars in the sign of Scorpio.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And I think there are multiple song lyrics that she has written about being a
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: mastermind who is orchestrating things behind the scenes and under the surface.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Just an interesting aside.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, where were we?
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Saturn and Jupiter.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Saturn is in domicile in Capricorn and also Aquarius.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Jupiter, same type of thing, two signs.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: It's in domicile in Sagittarius and also in Pisces.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: And then there are the outer planets.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: The outer planets are kind of considered co-rulers of certain signs.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: They don't rule any signs in traditional astrology because people didn't know about
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: those planets a long,
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: long time ago.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: But if you're using modern astrology, Uranus rules Aquarius.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: So it's in domicile in Aquarius.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Neptune rules Pisces.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: And Pluto rules Scorpio.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Pluto is actually considered the higher octave of Mars, so they share some qualities.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's talk about planets being in exaltation next.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: When a planet is exalted, it's in a sign that isn't a home sign.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: It doesn't rule that sign, but it still functions extremely well in that sign.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Because the natural energy associated with the sign that it's in is really
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: complementary to that planet's energy.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: So as a human,
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: this wouldn't be like being in your own home,
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: but it's like being a VIP at a really exclusive party.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: This planet is like the celebrated guest that everyone at the party is hoping will show up.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Or it could be like if you were going to visit someone really close to you that you
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: admire and love and understand well and get along with really well.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: And so whenever you go to visit them, you just have a really fantastic time because you get each other.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: It's like visiting a bestie who you've known forever and they're really excited that you're coming.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: And so they roll out the red carpet for you and they buy all your favorite
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: groceries for you before you get there and they stock the fridge and they've bought
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: you a new pillow and a comfy pair of silk pajamas or something.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: And they've planned all these fun activities and outings to do with you while you're there.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: As a host, they just really want you to enjoy your stay and have a good time.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: And you will have a good time.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: You'll both have a good time because your energy meshes so well with the energy of the environment.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: This is exaltation.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: An example of a planet in exaltation would be Venus in the sign of Pisces.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Venus doesn't rule Pisces,
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: but Pisces energy creates an environment where Venus gets to show off all her best traits.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Pisces is a very dreamy sign and a very creative sign,
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: and it's also a sign that likes to show people compassion and be of service to a cause.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: And Venus,
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: with her deep love of romance and art and relationships and harmony,
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: she can totally get on board with all these Pisces things and vice versa.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Pisces says,
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: hey,
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Venus,
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: let's combine our efforts and dream up some romantic and beautiful and pleasant
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: experiences while you're here.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And Venus says, yes, we absolutely must.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: I thought you'd never ask.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: So Venus is going to be very happy while it's here because it gets to not only use
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: all of its strengths and do the things that it likes,
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: but it gets to be admired and celebrated and appreciated.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: appreciated for what it brings to the table.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Where are the planets exalted?
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: If you don't have the chart right in front of you,
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: the Sun is exalted in Aries because the high energy dynamic environment of Aries
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: bolsters the Sun's vitality and need for self-expression.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: The Moon is exalted in Taurus.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Mercury is exalted in Virgo, which it also rules.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: So it's both in domicile and exalted in that sign.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Venus is exalted in the aforementioned Pisces.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Mars is exalted in Capricorn.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Capricorn is a cardinal sign, so it's active like Mars.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: And it's also a sign that encourages diligence and hard work, which Mars is really good at.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: So it functions quite nicely there.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Jupiter is exalted in the sign of Cancer,
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: and that's because the nurturing and warm environment of Cancer supports Jupiter's
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: desire for growth and expansion.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Also, both of those energies lean towards placing high value on emotional wisdom so they get along well.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: These are both high EQ energies.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Saturn is exalted in Libra as the planet of structure and discipline.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: It really appreciates Libra's ability to create balance in all things.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: And Saturn, in turn, can help Libra create even more of that balance.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Now, the outer planets, these are a bit different.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: In traditional astrology,
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: these planets didn't have signs they were exalted in because,
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: again,
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: they were discovered a lot later.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: So it would seem that there isn't really a firmly held opinion on where they might be exalted.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Although some people have made a case for Uranus being exalted in Scorpio,
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Neptune being exalted in Cancer,
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: and Pluto being exalted in Leo.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Again, these are not universally accepted.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: You can play around with that information if you want to and see if it resonates in your opinion.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: All right,
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: so now that we've discussed the types of essential dignities that allow planets to
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: function at their best,
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: let's look at the other side of the coin and talk about the placements that can be
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: a little more challenging.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: First, we have detriment.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: When a planet is in detriment,
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: mechanically speaking,
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: that means it's in the sign that is exactly opposite to the sign that it rules.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: So where the moon is in domicile in Cancer,
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: it's in detriment in Capricorn,
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: which is the sign that sits exactly opposite Cancer on the Cancer-Capricorn axis of
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: an astrology wheel.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Or to use an example that we've already used,
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Mars is in domicile in Aries,
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: but it's in detriment in the opposite sign to Aries,
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: which is Libra.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: And this makes sense if you think about it, because opposite signs do indeed have opposite energies.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Aries is about independence and decisiveness, which Mars likes.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: which Mars creates.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: But Libra isn't about independence.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: It's about partnership and creating harmony with other people.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: And Libra tends to be indecisive because it takes a long time to consider all of
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: the potential consequences of its actions.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Libra wants to figure out how things will play out,
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: possibly,
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: before it does the thing it's thinking of doing,
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: which can be an impossible thing to do,
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: really,
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: because there are always so many possibilities of how things are going to turn out.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: And all of that is the opposite of Mars.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: So it stands to reason that Mars isn't going to feel particularly at ease hanging out in Libra's space.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Mars is going to have to rein in its natural behavior,
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: its natural personality,
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: or change it somehow in order to try to accommodate Libra's preferences.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: This is a bit like being a guest in a house where maybe you had this experience
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: like when you were a little kid or something and your parents were gone and you had
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: to go stay with another relative for a few days.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: But you're staying with someone and the way that household operates is just
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: completely different than what you're used to at home.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: You know that feeling?
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: But you're trying to be nice and polite and fit in so you alter your habits and behavior.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: And it's not that comfortable.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: So to continue this train of thought,
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: using Mars,
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: still,
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Mars in Libra is going to lose some of its natural tendencies.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: It's going to lean toward indecisiveness over its typical decisiveness.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: It's going to be possibly more conflict avoidant rather than its typical direct and assertive self.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: It's going to direct more energy into Libra-like people-pleasing.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: And because Mars is naturally a more assertive energy,
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: it's going to need to direct that assertion somewhere.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: So instead of being directly assertive, it could become passive-aggressive.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: But even though all of that sounds challenging,
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: this can still be a really positive placement because this Mars can direct its
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: energy towards things that Libra is fantastic at,
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: like diplomacy.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Mars in Libra can make you an excellent diplomat, a great mediator, peacemaker, negotiator.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: It can also be an amazing advocate or an activist.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Energies are often directed towards justice and fairness in Libra because justice
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: and fairness are both Libran ideas.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: These combinations can also make for a person who is charming and
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: because they can combine Mars's natural charisma and raw magnetism with Libra's
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: gracious demeanor and strong social skills.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: So, again, there are challenges.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Sure, there are.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: But it's not bad.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: It's simply a different, more unique way to express yourself.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: this planet's energy,
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: and if used well,
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: it can become an enviable strength,
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: a useful strength,
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: a strength that the world needs.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Here's where planets are in detriment.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: The Sun is in detriment in Aquarius.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: The Moon in Capricorn.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Mercury, which has rulership over two signs, remember, is also in detriment in two signs, the opposites.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: So Mercury is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Venus, same thing.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: It's in detriment in both Aries and Scorpio.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Mars is in detriment in both Taurus and Libra.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Jupiter is in detriment in Gemini and Virgo.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Saturn is in detriment in Cancer and Leo.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Uranus is in detriment in Leo.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Neptune in Virgo and Pluto in Taurus.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Again, all of this is in the chart provided, so you don't have to try and remember any of this.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Okay,
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: finally,
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: we'll talk about the last of the four essential dignities,
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: and that's when a planet is in fall.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Planets are in fall when they are in the sign that's opposite to the sign of its exaltation.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: So just as we talked about Venus being exalted in Pisces, right, it's in fall when
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: in the sign opposite Pisces, which is Virgo.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: That's actually my Venus placement, by the way.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: I have Venus in fall,
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: and I'm a Libra rising,
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: so Venus is my chart ruler,
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: and therefore this is a pretty big deal.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk about chart rulers on the show soon.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: planet is considered to be at its weakest when it's in fall and that's because the
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: environment created by that sign just doesn't support the planet all that well and
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: in fact the planet can feel really restricted.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Rather than feeling revered and appreciated the way it does in a sign where it's exalted,
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: it feels the opposite way.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: It feels underappreciated.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: It feels underutilized and even ignored.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: And this can lead a person to feeling like they are kind of inadequate when it
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: comes to expressing the energy that this planet embodies.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: There can be a kind of inferiority complex with a planet in fall.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: There's typically an insecurity that you might have in that part of your life.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: For example, going back to Venus in fall.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: Venus is in fall in Virgo, as I said.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Virgo is a very perfectionistic sign.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: It's a very nitpicky sign.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: It's very critical.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: So having Venus here,
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: the planet of,
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: close connection,
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: the planet that allows us to really enjoy life and enjoy pleasure,
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: would signal,
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: having this in fall would signal that it might be difficult for someone to relax
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: and enjoy life because they're so worried about all of their responsibilities,
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: right?
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Or they may be very critical of themselves or criticize themselves.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: And therefore,
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: they may have kind of a tough time opening up to other people and being vulnerable
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: with other people.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Because again, inferiority complex.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: And of course, that can lead to having a hard time connecting sometimes.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: So that Venus desire for connection and beauty and pleasure can get blocked by Virgo's worries.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: But again, just like the planet in detriment, a planet in fall can also be very useful.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: It can be.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: It has a purpose.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: The same Venus in Virgo that gets frustrated because its environment is too
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: buttoned up for Venus's liking is also going to be very service-oriented.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: It's going to have a very keen eye for beauty, and it's going to have very refined taste, typically.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: People with Venus in Virgo or Venus in Fall can make very good editors,
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: interior designers,
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: writers,
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: musicians,
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: anything that involves a need to combine beauty with detail-orientedness.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: They'll keep refining a thing and refining a thing over and over in order to make
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: the most beautiful thing they can manage.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: A chef even might do this.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: They might refine a recipe to get it tasting better and better each time they make it.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: So there's a practical purpose and there's a more lofty purpose,
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: which is going to be about transformation.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: It facilitates a deep transformation journey when there's a planet in the fall.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: So,
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: for example,
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: the moon is in fall in Scorpio,
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: and that can be a really difficult placement for the moon that fosters very intense
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: emotional experiences and,
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: causes the moon to struggle with feeling secure and that type of thing.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: But having these intense experiences is going to force a person to examine that
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: planet's energy on an ongoing basis and analyze how that energy is being used and
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: then find new and interesting ways to work with it.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: And so what happens over time then is that this person with their moon in fall
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: becomes really resilient from having done all of this work there.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: So they can go from feeling insecure initially to feeling very competent and very
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: assured that they can handle anything because they always have.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: That's a deep level of transformation and a growth curve that they wouldn't have had.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: without that planet in fall.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Going back to Venus again,
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: instead of trying to correct all of the flaws in things to make them more beautiful
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: or more perfect,
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: one might eventually learn to see the beauty in imperfection,
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: to see the joy and pleasure in imperfection.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: So to recap,
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: a planet in fall can indicate where there is potential for growth and
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: transformation in your life.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: In terms of specific planets, the Sun is in fall in the sign of Libra.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: The Moon is in fall in Scorpio.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Mercury in Pisces.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Venus in Virgo.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Mars in Cancer.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Jupiter in Capricorn, Saturn in Aries.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: Again,
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: the outer planets Uranus,
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: Neptune,
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: and Pluto,
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: there's not an agreed upon set of signs where they are considered to be in fall,
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: just like there are no firmly agreed upon set of signs where they are considered to
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: be exalted.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: All right, I know this was a lot.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: I rattled off a lot of planets and a lot of signs.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Hopefully it wasn't too confusing.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: I do encourage you to check out the handout for this week.
