- 1:01SPEAKER_03: A special guest today, DJ Bonnox.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: What's up, y'all?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Taylor, my brother.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: How you doing, my brother?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's good to be with you guys.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh, I wasn't able to experience all that New York energy, uh, but just being in this chat room with you, I could feel it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I could feel it already.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I could feel it already.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: You're talking about the New York Knicks.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: I know I'm not.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, that what's that like?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, for I I've been lucky enough to live in cities where like Steelers, they win, you know, the Super Bowl and the Stanley Cup.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Like, it's a different, it's it's it's so good for DJs, right?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: It's so good for the rest of the year.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: So united right now.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Everybody's united, everybody's getting along with everybody.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: I was I was DJing for like a thousand people outdoors watching the game.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Retarded, crazy.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: It's crazy, amazing, right?
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: And then I drove into the city and the city was just gridlock everywhere, bro.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: And it was like everybody just getting along.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: It was great, man.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: It looks crazy.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: What like what are like, you know, I saw the Ja Rule song is coming out, you know, the New York, New York, like what other songs have been coming out of the box?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Like a guy asking outside of the New York, fuck it, you know.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Like, all right, so check this out, right?
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: This is like something that we've never experienced before.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: Because New York is a basketball town.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Like New York City, you know, granted, we have all sports teams on all sports, but New York City, you can't go two blocks without seeing a basketball court.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Like, that's what it is.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: And as long as I've been alive, if you don't count the Liberty, because the Liberty just got a championship two years ago, but we haven't had an NBA championship my whole life.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Think about it, but that's since I've been alive, we've never seen an NBA championship.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: So that's everything like so.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: You can only imagine how that feels for the whole city.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: It's like, yeah, you know, we've been the MLB and NFL and how it happened, but this being a basketball town and finally having a basketball championship and like over 50 years is nuts.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: And then, like, for example, I was just having this conversation with somebody yesterday, you bring up the songs.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: If you go on New York Shazam, you see songs that you're like, why is this why are people searching this song?
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Because something like Ja Rule's New York song, right?
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: Ja Rule Fat Georgetic is that song is the number six most Shazam song in New York, right?
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Crazy.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: And let me tell you something.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: I I was on the set also, and somebody was asking, yo, you gotta play some Wu Tan.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Wu Tan brought that energy back.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: And I was like, Word.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: So what did I do?
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Wu Tan clay ain't nothing, fuck with the crowd, was actually knew the record.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Mind you, you know, this record is what, 95, 4?
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: That's a great idea.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: I love that though.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: Like New York, I was sitting here and I was like, who doesn't know this record?
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Like, who doesn't know who why are you Shazam in this song?
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: Somebody's obviously going, like, what song is that Shazam in it?
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: But then you sit back and you look at it, and that record came out 20 years ago.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: Like the fat Joe Jaru Jedic is a 20-year-old record, and it's like, you know, Zerg.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: The city's on fire right now.
- 3:59SPEAKER_04: We we live, we literally like the Knicks won the championship.
- 4:03SPEAKER_04: Then and the fans literally put the city on fire by burning buses.
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: Some kid got shot, some kid got, you know, beat up.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm back in the New York shit.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: Then we got the World Cup happening in the tri-state area.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 4:16SPEAKER_04: But you got people from all over the world who are literally in New York City trying to celebrate the World Cup.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: You know, they got to witness the Knicks win.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: We had the Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's what they said.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: It was past Sunday, right?
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: It was like pride happening, my brother.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: When I tell you New York was on fire, city's lit, and then they don't stop.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: We got the parade coming, then we got Father's Day coming, then we got July 4th week.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Yo, bro, this the city's on like right now is a place to be.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: No lie.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: I need to I need to go.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: That's a cheat, though.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: You know, your team wins, like there's something to be said about that for DJing and just for the community, you know, especially like in Pittsburgh.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: It's not a big city.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: So when we're able to say we're Super Bowl champions or or something, you know, it really it's a cheat.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: You know, you just say go next in the crowd, right?
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: For the next year, you know, it's great.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: For the next five years, you know?
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: Tell the world where you're born and raised, man.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: Tell the world, like, you know, for everybody that doesn't know DJ Bonnox, how he is.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: So I'm actually, I'm from Philly originally, and that's kind of like where I really, by default, was listening to some of the greats, Touch Tone, Jay Ski, and all those people.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: You know, I know New York's New York, but Philly definitely holds the candle.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: So I definitely grew up listening to all those cats.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And then when I actually got to University of Pittsburgh for college, that's when I like bought a shitty, my dad bought me like a shitty set of turntables.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I had to navigate through the Pittsburgh lens, which was we aren't Philly, we aren't New York, we aren't Los Angeles, you know, like there's something beautiful about small cities and how they exist.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And I think that a lot of the music people there, uh, and in these small cities, we we want to overcompensate because, like, how am I gonna go to war with New York?
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: How am I gonna go to war with uh so I think that there was a lot of great creators in in Pittsburgh that really, you know, when you're in from Philly, I think you just like have to know every genre.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: It's like you have to have know the TSOP and funk and soul and all that.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: So Pittsburgh was was a great ground for me because I got to learn not from that sort of big city.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: I got to learn from like a small city, which which gave me a little bit more visibility, and then to be able to take it further and linking up with Wiz.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: And man, I just remember my 20s DJing.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: You know, it started from college parties to college radio to college intern, and you know, and I was opening up for the Blueprint 3 tour.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And Sean, when I look back and all the shit that happened, I'm like, man, it's so crazy, and I'm so blessed to just keep going.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I I linked up, I I I did radio, so I was doing full-time radio with a clear channel at the time.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I was a music director, so I got all those stripes, and then, you know, Wiz, I had to quit.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: I quit my full-time radio job to be with Wiz, which is which is a tough question to ask, you know.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Okay, so wait, so wait, sorry, so wait.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: So at this point, so you're the music not only were you DJing on the station, you were the music director of the station, right?
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And I was hosting more than I I was DJing to the clubs, but I was more of a host on the radio than it was iHeart, so they weren't mixed, mixed, like I was the first person probably to DJ a Penn game, a Steeler game.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, hip hop and that shit looked it wasn't welcomed, you know, then really.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Like when you had two turntables out there, you looked like a street dude more than you did like the CD guys.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: So what year was that?
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Hold on, hold on.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: What yeah was that?
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: This was like uh like 2005-ish.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: So, you know, yeah, yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: Good.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: So being the music director, how'd you link up with Wiz?
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Like, so and I know that probably the conflict of interest comes into it.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: You have to quit, but how'd you link up with Wiz?
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think the simple answer and the basic answer for that is like if you're if you're in you're a quote unquote representing your city and you're not a part of what's going on, it doesn't mean you have to be a producer.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Like you have to, I was a fan.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I was a supporter.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was much younger, but seeing this guy get so much, he was getting so much love outside of Pittsburgh.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Like it's it seemed like Pittsburgh had to catch up to it, you know?
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: So I was just friends with a he was interning at like a studio that my one of my best friends at the time, Edan, Eric Dan, uh ID Labs, one of Wiz's uh engineers and producers.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: I was I was supporting his rap group.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Like it was that's what it is, is that like we were a part of a scene, you know?
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like uh I didn't ask for any opportunities.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: I had to just that's what I I was telling someone recently, like I just did everything, not because it was a formula, it was I was a fan, right?
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: And then when you when you're a fan, you go experience it.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: You go to dark places in dark corners of the city to experience hip-hop.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And then you take that.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: We didn't have phones and shit, and you take that and you try to recreate that in your bedroom.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: And it's I just really learned how much hip-hop was a community and meeting the breakdancers and the that's that that's what that experience was for me, you know, in Pittsburgh was be like, if you're not a part of a community, and that's why I love the heavy hitters, and that's why I love like I I just think that people, you know, I love everyone could be a main character, but if you're not a part of a community, it's I feel like that you're missing out on like, you know, you could go back to Pittsburgh and ask them, you know, who are some of the GOAT DJs, and they'll probably mention me, but that's because I put my time and work into it, you know, and it was natural.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: So Wiz eventually, I did a couple shows, like I helped book Wiz.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: I was just helping on the side.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Like he had other DJs before me.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And then eventually organic.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: It was organic, it was super organic.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And they eventually were like, we Wiz dropped, Wiz signed to Atlantic, nobody knows yet.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: We're gonna do a three-month tour on a tour bus this fall.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: We want you to come with us.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And so I had to quit my full-time job, benefits.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: I worked hard to get to the afternoons, number one afternoons, music director, but I just remember having to make that type of decision, which That's a big decision.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's a big decision because you know, there's a lot of people, radio people, especially, and I say this with respect and grace.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Uh they play it safe and they never get to, you know, I think a lot of Philly people, like there's so many Philly people that could have thrived all over the world, but you know, it's like they don't want leaving the comfort zones tough.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: It's scary.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: It's scary because you're you're leaving exact you're leaving security, man.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: You're leaving health insurance, you're leaving uh a paycheck, you know, and family.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Family, family, and family.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: What the fuck is out there waiting for you?
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: That's why I respect Double J, you know, like he's like he felt like he was bigger than where he was, and he went to Dallas and made some noise, and now he's in LA.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And like you just have to really respect.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, I respect a lot of the radio people who like left their Peter Parker, left Boston to to find their way.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: And I think I, you know, after Pittsburgh, was one great thing about I was always able to hold a full-time job while with Wiz.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: So I did radio, I did Power 106 for a little bit in LA.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: I was doing Portland.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: You never knew that.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: And then yeah, and then I did Minneapolis, and that's where I linked with Pete.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: And so um, I always had radio.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I'm a good Asian boy, right?
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: So I always had my benefits and because Wiz wasn't offering me that type shit, you know.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: So I had to have something safe on the side.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: But the best part of that, it always paired with, yeah, I gotta like I was doing remote work before COVID.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Like I was doing radio shows on the road, and music direct or uh program directors, they didn't understand it because they were, you know, radio wants you to be after hell constantly, change.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: You could be anywhere, right?
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Like calling off from a radio job is like one of the hardest things, like 20 years ago, you know.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Like we could never want to call off because like that moment you lose your space, someone's so yeah, it was a cool whirlwind, man.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Pittsburgh brought a lot.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: I I did take a risk with to leave a full-time job, leave my benefits, and then I went on tour with Wiz.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Imagine dropping black and yellow, and then the Steelers go to the Super Bowl.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: So, like you can't write that shit, you know?
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: You can't write that.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: They didn't win.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: They didn't win, but yeah.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: No, no, but that was a gr that was a crazy big look, right?
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: Because that song, the song was black and yellow, the Steelers go all the way to the Super Bowl.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: Wiz performs a song, was it at the Super Bowl?
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: Or was it at the new?
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: I don't think we formed it at the Super Bowl, but we were out around, you know, in and around it for sure.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: I do, but but I do remember him performing it at um at the game, at a game.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it was maybe the one.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: It was like an AFC championship that yeah.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: Which was a huge look.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: You know what I'm saying?
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: It's huge.
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: That's a big thing.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: So when you asked, like, you know, what are the songs moving around in New York?
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: It's kind of like that.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: Like, like black yellow around that time.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: But anyway, go ahead.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, I, you know, when Wiz and when they played me that song at first, I was like, this is like the first single.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, like you're gonna put out a you know, you're trying to talk to the world and and and you're gonna put a song about Pittsburgh, and then lo and behold, like everyone made their remix, everyone, yeah, you know, the different colors, purple, yellow, snoop.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: So it just we all was playing it.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: We was playing it, you know what I'm saying?
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that was a huge record.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: So I wanna know, let's go on the road, right?
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: What was the big festival?
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: What was the what that big one show that hit you like, whoa, I'm here.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: What's the one that because I'm sure there's been so many.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's been a few of them.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: I think we did Coachella that year.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, and we were at like 3 p.m.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: type shit.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, but he had such a chokehold on like that, like, you know, Wiz era and those rappers were kind of the bridge from, you know, big white T's to the snapbacks, you know, from the from the fitteds to the, you know, and from the blunts to the joints, you know?
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And there's like a level that as older people, we don't really understand.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: I remember people were offended because he kept telling people, like, I don't smoke blunts, I smoke joints, I drink gin.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Like, even drinking gin was like, you know, we hadn't seen that since like Snoop and you know, gin and juice and shit.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: So Wiz definitely, you know, he was dying his hair and wearing all this shit kind of before when people started being like, oh, he's weird.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: So you know, no, and that's why I love Wiz, though, you know, because he he really what I what I realized, this is something that uh that I came to this realization about touring, is that Wiz speaks to a community.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: This is what I was saying back to you guys a second ago.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Like you could just rap and have cool visuals and shit, but Wiz speaks to a community.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: So when you're out, you know, worldwide, the there's potheads everywhere, you know, and then but you gotta even look at bigger, like it's illegal in places.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: So when we we were one of the first rap groups to perform in Saudi Arabia ever.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Like they, you know, they didn't allow concerts.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: It was like 2017.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: We might have been like the third concert, and uh, you know, we're singing so what we get drunk, so what we smoke weed.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: And it like from our you know, from a rap point of view, it sounds fun and shit, but I look at it on like a bigger level of like, these cats don't know what weed is, they don't have liquor around.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: So when they're singing, so what we get drunk, I'm like, this is a bigger cultural thing than you can imagine.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Y'all just looking at Wiz and you know, everyone just playing favorites or whatever, but you gotta look at culturally.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Wiz is, you know, his Khalifa Kush.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Like, he's got the one of the most successful weed brands, so it's like way bigger than like if he has bars or not.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: And he's been dropping dope ass projects.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: So for someone to go this long and for him to bring me a part of it, we're on this MGK tour as we speak right now, and it's a different position for us because we're actually opening for MGK, which is our first time in 16 years of touring summers, which is great though, because I just feel like that all of us included, even like we're navigating old head DJing, you know, we're navigating rap been 50 years old or whatever.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: So I just think that these are all cool new spaces, and we should just keep celebrating each other.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And you know, I I I want to be a part of a culture that is lifting us up, not like waiting for someone to fall and then taking them down, you know.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: So I've I have a question for you, right?
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: As a super successful tour DJ, I know that it's it's hard to maintain your own identity and your own kind of like your own success.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: No, wait, uh not I'm not not for you specifically.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: I got a good answer though.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: I got a good answer.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: Wait, a lot of DJs find that kind of, you know, that transition to be able to maintain both at the same time is difficult.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: Because a lot of times you see guys are tour DJs and they just rock out on the tours, they rock out on the tours, but then on the other side of it, they kind of like don't really handle that side, like as far as like DJing and clubs.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm just saying, like, I think Venice handles that very well.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: You you've been able to maintain hold on, hold on, Vinus.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Let me give you your buff.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: No, no, I got you, I got you, I got you.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: I got you.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: You've been able to maintain, you know, a balance with everything, with doing big clubs, doing radio, doing touring.
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: Can you give us like some advice or some insight on how you've been able to do that?
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Well, I just like I I'm very aware about how sometimes this main character shit can affect eve individuals, us as DJs, right?
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Like, and I'm not saying that we don't, I'm not, you know, however, however, how anybody wants to play their role in the game, I'm gonna tell you this, and this shit helped me out.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Wiz has helped me share the stage for over 15 years.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Some of y'all motherfuckers can't share the stage.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: You can't.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Some of y'all can't stand next to somebody.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: And that's why I and I get the best of both worlds because like Robin, Batman has his episodes, Robin has his own show.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: But when Batman and Robin are together, people like fuck with Robin and fuck with Batman.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: And I'm not saying I'm his Robin or Batman.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying, like, I think that again, when you have a community, like when I'm with y'all, when we do the heavy hitters retreat and shit, no one's the main character, bro.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: We all actually relieved that no one is staring at just alone and us controlling the room.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: We like have so much fun being wallflowers, and that's what I'm I I just want to say this for future DJs, and some someone could say I'm wrong.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: It's like it's cool being the main character, but it's also awesome to be able to share the stage with someone.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: And now you're not just one person trying to navigate DJ, you're like a whole crew, you know what I'm saying?
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: And that and that's why I love you know the heavy hitters and saying that.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: But I just want people to kind of think about their how they I, you know, DJs, we show up when we want, we do what we want, which is great.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: I I'm glad we have that.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: But like sometimes you gotta show up on time, sometimes you gotta be the TV.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: You know what I also think?
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: I think Wiz Khalifa is a different type of artist.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: I think he embraces the DJing.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: I think he puts you part of the show.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Like you're like a fucking band.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Well, he just he he embraces us being different too.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Uh I remember, you know, enough you said just talk to me.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: He's like, you're like the geek, you're like the geek dude who knows turntables and shit.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: And I I kinda am, you know what I'm saying?
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: And but I but I love that about us.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: That's why, you know, these wish shows are always like they're really diverse.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: It's a great crowd.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Because it's not about rap at that point.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: It's about, I I would say it's about having a comfortable space to express your love for music and weed, bro.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Like for I I just have to say this.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Some of us need it.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Some of us, it's medicine for people.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: And why do you think, why do you think they make it illegal in other places?
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Because it'll help people, you know.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: So uh, you know, going back to what you were saying, Cast though, I love that I can come in and out of a main character or not.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Because I'm still getting the byproduct of main character, right?
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: I'm on the bus, I'm on the plane, I'm getting catering, you know, plus other things we don't talk about.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: I'm smoking, and and but but that's what I'm saying.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: It I it sometimes relieves the pressure of us having to.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: We've been we've been the main thing forever, guys.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: And it's like sometimes like I'm looking at like a lot of the parties that are people having, and I'm just like, you know what, let the young people have.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I don't need to be doing everything, you know.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: I so what I'm really trying to say right now is like this evolution of self and being the main character.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: And like we are as heavy hitters, like we're looking that our biggest asset right now is figuring out how we can keep working together and highlighting each other, right?
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: That's what that's for.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: So I don't want people to lose sight of that.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Like, tap into your community.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: And I love being that for Wiz and I love being like, yo, I could DJ this too, you know?
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: And so it really taught me a lot of skills.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Like I could just walk out in front of 100,000 right now and just say whatever, play whatever.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: And that's like, you know, learning to do that at a drop of the time.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Hey, Wiz is gonna be late.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: The show's like, you're on, go, you know, so it was a lot.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: I I I've learned a lot, but you know, standing the most important thing that I want to say is like standing next to someone and being a supporter is also important, you know.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Like I don't have to be the main character all the time.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: It gives me a break from like having to figure it out for myself, you know.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: And because it's hard on us sometimes, like when we have to feel like we have to be seen constantly because that's how we started and that's how my whole like I'm I'm happy to share the stage and kind of take the pressure off of me.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: Do you ever really fuck up on tour?
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, I have like, you know, dropping something, but rare, rare, you know.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: I probably save a lot of shows more than Wiz think knows, you know, and that's my job, right?
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Is if shit fucks up, or you know, I'll save it to a degree.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: And then also, you know, sometimes you just have to take the L off stage and be like, yo, Wiz, I gotta restart my computer, you know, like like that's just what it is.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: So, but nah, man, we have a I what I love about Wiz is like we're not, we just know what each other's thinking on stage, you know.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Like I know what he's thinking.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: So if he wants Yeah, so it's it's been a it's a bit, you know, and thank you to you guys too for supporting Wiz.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: And you know, he's different.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: And I'm glad that we, you know, you've seen a lot of artists come and go, and for Wiz to still be doing this is is uh you know amazing.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: It is amazing.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: It is amazing.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: So so real quick, back in the days, I used to go to Europe a lot.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: I used to gig a lot in Europe.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: And you know, on the bill sometimes it'd be me.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: The next day it'll be DMX's DJ.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: And you know, they would get booked just because they were so-and-so artists, but I wouldn't even know who the DJ is.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Like, what the fuck is that?
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, it means DJ.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: He's on and people will come out for that.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: Now, for you, Bonnox, I feel like your name on its own holds that weight.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: It's not like, oh, Wiz Khalifa's DJ.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: So I'm curious, like, have they booked you out the country or out to stay?
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Oh, because you're Wiz Khalifa's DJ.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Like, I've had uh uh go ahead.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: No, no, I'm just you know Nah like you know, especially when it was a little bit more uh heavier, I guess, you know, 2013, 14.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: You know, I've you know I've gotten flown out, I got flown out to Brazil to do my own tour, Korea.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: And but yeah, I'm gonna give you guys a cool insight that I that I I recently DJ'd in, where was I?
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: Shanghai.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: And I saw this DJ, and he was just absolutely killing it.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: And in my brain, I'm like, they don't need us.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: See, so here's what the promoter told me.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: 10, 15 years ago, they used to want to see Camillo and all of us because we're shark.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: We're yeah, we're showing them, you know, the internet wasn't as and now I'm watching the local motherfuckers in Shanghai absolutely debodying it.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: And so that's the one thing that I want to keep, you know, keep our ears up about is like they don't need us anymore, like technology, all that.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: So that's one thing that we used to get flown out constantly to do that.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but now it's not like that anymore, and not in a bad way, it's just the evolution that DJing has become more accessible.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Before, we'd have to like what songs is Camillo playing?
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: You'd have to experience it, you know.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: You couldn't just like, hey, here's what everyone's playing.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Let me like Shazam everything, or let me ask AI.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: You know, you literally can ask AI to make a set for you.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: That's facts, man.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: You know, every time I go to out of out of the country to DJ, I see some shit or learn some that I did not even know or think of.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: I'm like, how did they do that?
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, yo, now I'm learning from you guys.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: I'll be like, how did you do that?
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, especially I and this is something that I said recently, like a uh observation of mine is that like UK and European DJs, they have a bigger job because they gotta they gotta really keep up with a lot of the grime and all that.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm not really that deep in it.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Obviously, I know the names and a couple favorites, but they have to know the hip hop shit and they have to know that.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: And then like Afrobeats in Europe, like when we like years ago in Saudi Arabia, they were playing Afrobeats at the club, and we had me and Wiz had like kind of never heard it before.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: It was that uh Joanna, and I was like, people are going crazy for this shit, you know?
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember I used I played in Dubai, and this is early, this is before the pandemic, and Afro Beats was in.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, what the fuck is this?
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: What the fuck is that?
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: And there were these UK DJs that were booking, and I'm just listening to like I was lost.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: Lost like, you know, and they were like ahead, like and I'm here doing home.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: I'm like, what the?
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: I need this, I need that, I need, you know, right playing out of town, it's it's also tough now.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: You have to kind of also cater and do homework for them.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: Definitely some homework.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: I I'll tell you one story, and this is a good humiliate humiliation story.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: I remember doing an after show with Wiz and ASAP Rocky in in uh London.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, ASAP seems to be ahead of the curve and like musically and shit.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: And I remember he came up to me, he's like, yo, play some of that English grime shit.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: And I like didn't have any.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: And he was like, What the fuck, yo?
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, and I'm just like, I, you know, and you just have to, you know, whatever.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: That's uh I I won't forget that because I was like, damn.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: But but I also wasn't gonna pretend like I knew what the fuck out.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: So that was just a yeah, I guess I Yeah, it happens, you know, it happens.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: All the time.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Especially with Africa, it's happening one time.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: I never forgot this.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: I did a party in uh I was on a tour in Europe, and you know, everything was rocking, everything was great until I got to Hamburg.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: So I get to Hamburg, Europe, right?
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: Germany.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: And I'm Hamburg, Germany.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: I get to Hamburg, Germany, right?
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: I'm playing at this club, the club is packed.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: They call it black music there, which is in Germany, it'll be like it's like black music room.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, black music.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: But the club is packed with white people, so it doesn't even, you know.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: So I'm there and I'm playing every hot record, bro.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: I'm going, I think I'm killing it.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: I'm looking at the crowd and they're like, Cool.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: I'm just like, yo, I don't know what's going on.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: There was another guy that was DJing before me.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: I never forgot it.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Dude was like 6'6, uh uh African dude.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: He was like, he was from Africa, but he was older.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: He was might have been like, at the time, he might have been in his 50s easily, right?
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: So he's an OG, and he's like, yeah, you know, he let he got he was playing before I got there, then he let me get on.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: Super cool.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: We was having a great discussion, whatever.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: So I'm DJing and I'm and he's like, Yeah, you killing it.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: He's like, yo, you killing it.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: I DJ for like bro, I threw the whole set.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: At a point, I got to the point where I'm like, all right, bro, obviously, obviously, I meant to stuff.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: It's not it, it's not my night.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: So I'm like, yo, bro, this is your house.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: You can get back on and do the thing.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: Yo, Bonnix, Camillo, you know.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: And I tell you, I got on, and he played that afro beat version of every record I just played, and the crowd, wow, he had afrobeat mixes of 50% records, and I was like, what is this reggae?
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: He's like, this is not reggae, this afrobeats.
- 27:18SPEAKER_05: Afro beats, right?
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: Then he went into other stuff, but that just goes to show, you know, when you go, sometimes when you go to countries, you you're just gonna get hit by.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: I got a good one from early on in Europe.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: I remember because I'm I come from like a DJ, DJ.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't come from a show, like I come from like trying to present this differently.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: So I remember early I got booked in Europe, and I think I'm killing it, right?
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: And I'm just like, you know, and the guy's like, Aren't you gonna talk on the mic?
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: And that's literally what they wanted.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: They wanted to, they wanted them to hear, yo, this is Whiz Kaleva's DJ from America.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Like, but that era is different now.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Now, Europe, they're like way they're like they're on top of it, man.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: That's a holder ball game, man.
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: But in on the Asia front, that's kind of like how it still is in in in in Japan.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: Like, it's a real big thing for you to get on the mic and rock, even if you're not, even if you're rocking in English.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: Like, they just want to feel that energy.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Right, yeah, it's that energy, right, right.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Leeds, man.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: I played in I played in in Belgium, and you know, you're in Belgium.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: You're your mind is okay, I'm in Belgium, that's like Northern Europe, kind of sort of, middle of Europe.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: But I get to the club and it's all Moroccans.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of people from Morocco in Belgium.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: You think I fucking knew that?
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: No, no, right?
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: And their whole vibe is different.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: It was like, you know, even dance records they had, it was like African dance records.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: I didn't know, bro.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: And I'm like Lady S could have helped you with that.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: Yo, for real.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: But that's that's what I'm getting at is you have to also do homework, right?
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: Yo, even when I go to Vegas.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: We still, we, that's what I'm saying.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: I was just gonna still, yeah.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Give me, give me the fucking top 10 West Coast record.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Like, I remember you gave me, you know what record you gave me?
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Gang Gang.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Um, the Gang Gang record.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: The what's his name?
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Beat Beat It Up.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: Yo, you gave me that shit about a year and a half ago, right?
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: That shit is just starting to pop up now in New York.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: I promise you.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: It's just starting like people playing it now.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: But back then, I played in Vegas, you know, I was like, wow, I never played this record, but it went.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Anyway, my point is doing some homework always is super important, bro, because you don't know what the fuck you walk into when you're out of the country.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Like you know, you don't you wanna you wanna get on and fucking kill this shit?
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: You don't want to see the opener doing better than you.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: It's just you know, that that to me irks and like I get I be like on it, like trying to get everybody.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Does New York not embody that then?
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Do you think it's a little bit more straightforward in New York?
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Like as far as like it being, I mean, I know that there's the deep levels of like house nights and whatever, but like, you know, are those like how do you feel about you know playing in New York versus playing in Europe?
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: Like it's vanilla.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: In my opinion, playing in New York rather than playing in somewhere else is very vanilla.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: New York is gonna be the same thing.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: I I might be wrong, Camilo, enough, but I feel like New York kind of now moves slower than everywhere else.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: In a sense, yeah, yeah, uh yeah, I agree.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: And and I think like overseas, man, they are just on their wave now.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: Meaning it's not our wave.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: They don't that's the other thing is that you could play like B-sides in Europe because they're not like you know how like obviously radio, five songs, you know, they're just like giving you the same five songs, but and overseas, like I when you listen to the radio.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: They just certainly records that just go like B sides, like you said, B sides, but young DJs don't even know what the fuck a B-side is.
- 30:45SPEAKER_04: But you think that has to do with, you know, back in the days in our prime in the early 90s, all the other hip-hop artists in the world who were the greatest came from New York.
- 30:55SPEAKER_04: So when you DJed the New York parties, it was like these artists were literally from our backyard.
- 31:00SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 31:00SPEAKER_04: But then you start moving into the 2000s, and the artists start to migrate from different regions of the country and different parts of the world.
- 31:09SPEAKER_04: And now it's it's almost like Commons record where it's I used to love her.
- 31:14SPEAKER_04: It's like hip hop has moved to different spaces.
- 31:17SPEAKER_04: But right now, hip hop's kind of weak in in the States.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't know.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: I think I think that um the only reason the only pushback I would have to that is that back you must even if you want to say early 2000s when hip hop started getting away from New York, we were still playing some shit that wasn't gonna be on the radio that you know that was just some shit.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: B-sides, B-sides, like Bonic said.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: I think I think streaming has hurt that a little bit.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because people kind of just stick to playlists, and the playlists are like, well, you know, they don't a lot of people don't make uh contrary to popular belief, a lot of people don't want to don't make their own playlists.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: They'll just look to see what's popular and then just rock with that, you know what I'm saying?
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: And then those kind of become the hit records, and it kind of becomes people delve deeper.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: No, people don't really go out and buy an album like that anymore.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: They'll just be like, all right, what's the top song off the album?
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: Bomb, I'm gonna rock with that.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: You know, the other the other thing, like like overseas, you know, that TV meant a lot because that's how people learn their shit.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: And that's true.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: And you know, now it's fucking TikTok.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: Now it's fucking social media.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: And that's where it's at, and that's where everything's fucking blowing up.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: So like you have to be on top of that, because that these little records that are huge, oh TikTok.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: And that that's everywhere, that's just that everywhere thing now, you know, everywhere.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I I try to remind DJs, especially look, I try to remind DJs that if someone approaches you, they don't, they're not in the DJ culture if they're like requesting a song or something.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Like they have every song that they ever wanted in their hand.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Like we're literally, they could get food, they can get pussy, they can get you're not playing their song, they could walk out of that club and play this song that they want to hear in that moment.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: So I think we have to remember that.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: I know I know a lot of DJs hate the shit when, oh, Bad Bunny, play the this, right?
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: Or somebody coming up asking for a song.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: I never reject that person.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: I tell my my boy Lou who rolls with me all the time, I say, yo, what do you wanted to hear?
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: Just because that for me is two seconds of homework that this shorty right here is asking for food.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Who's from that area, right?
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Who's from there?
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: I'm getting, you know what?
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: I'm getting put on right now.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: And yo, most of the times I take a screenshot of whatever I take it and I just take it back home.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, bum, yo, like literally three weeks later, that wreck is bringing.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: It's basically one better.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: You know what I do?
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: I'll do you one better.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: I always, I always, because you know, now that Serato integrated Apple Music and Spotify into Serato, I will literally pull it up.
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, I might I might play it, I might not, but I'm gonna pull it up and I'm gonna listen to it in a moment, be like, ah, this is trash.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: I'll put it to the side and I'll I'll leave it in my uh prepare window.
- 33:54unknown: Right.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: So then when I get home, I could actually really listen to it.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: I'll be like, oh, this is fire.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: I might have to play this right now.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: You know what I'm saying?
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: There's you can't, no matter, I don't, I don't care what a DJ tells me.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: There's no way you're gonna be on top of every song that's out there.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: No, you only when it's regional.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: You know, being in Vegas, like being in Vegas, like I'll I'll tell you a record that I learned just from a group of chicks from Chicago that were at Dre's one day, and they say, play move by Melo Bucks.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: You guys play that ever?
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Ha ha ha ha.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: And that's a good record, you know what I'm saying?
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: That's a fun, like upbeat, like cupid shuffle-ish type shit.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: And I actually I had never heard it, and then they requested it and I played it, and then now it's I'm it's in my sets, you know what I mean?
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: So it's fun to learn, uh, you know, especially in New York and Vegas, you know, a lot of a lot of international people around.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: So I I I wouldn't be so hard on taking requests because like you said, Camilla, it's just it's just uh the approach, and like, you know, if they're being polite or respectful, especially like even typically like Vegas, that's a great example.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: Like Vegas, you get Chicago, the Bay, LA, Texas, right, and you got all these people coming in one place, all these motherfuckers, trust me, everybody's not on Mellow Bucks.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: I promise you, if you're from Texas or the Bay, they're not playing Mellow Bucks, right?
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Right, right, right.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: But they are playing Key Glock and they are playing you know, so that's a perfect place to do homework.
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: Like, I all the yo, bro, I when I go to and I use Vegas because it's a it's a melting pot of everywhere just flying in, and and you just I'm doing homework.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh shit.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Detroit, this, uh, you know, so yeah, I I never I never turn away somebody asking me something for music or or requests.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: You know, a lot of times, fuck it.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: I don't have it, you know?
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: But you know, I you send me a folder of that New York shit, and I'm like clueless a lot of the drill shit and all that.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm like, what is this?
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: And listen, but listen, over here in New York, it's it's a pain in the ass.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: Like, like in the Latin world where where I'm from, you know, DJ a lot, it's like these Dembo records.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: They're popping, right?
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: But they're like they remind me of.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Remember, we were talking about that off camera of like the difference of playing, you know, Latino, West Coast, East Coast.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: Like, you gotta break that down for us.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: Like Dembo is straight Dominican music, like straight Dominican.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: To me, it's fast ass reggae, right?
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Let's just break it down like that.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: And and it just comes out of DR, but in the East Coast, the Latin world fucks with it.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: It's heavy.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: But we're in that we're in that zone right now where Dembo, these records drop like they drop like, yeah, like like like back in the days, dance hall music would drop, a rhythm would drop and last a month and gone.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: And you'll never hear it again, bro.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: But at that moment, it's the hottest shit ever.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: Hottest shit ever, bro.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 36:49SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: So really to make it easy, you can you can kind of like categorize it into two things, right?
- 36:56SPEAKER_03: You can categorize it into like the Caribbean Latin element and the mainland Latin element, right?
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: Because then you have in the Caribbean, you have, you know, your DR, your Puerto Rico.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: So you have your Dembo, you have your reggaeton, reggaeton, you got your salsa, you got your merengue, you got your bachata, you got all of that shit, right?
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: Then you go mainland and you have more of the like the Mexican music, the rancheros, the the corridos, the corridos and all that type of stuff, right?
- 37:24SPEAKER_03: And as you start going south, you get even Colombia big on salsa.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of like it's very regional, and it's also regional in the states because if you look at it on the East Coast, that's where the biggest concentration of the Caribbean Latinos are at.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: And on the West Coast, the biggest concentration of the like Chinese South America, Central America, they're over there.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: So that's kind of how the music kind of separates.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Now, as far as the different the the sound of them, completely different worlds.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Like Bonnie's the record that you mentioned, um Lachona off-air.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: La Chona.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, you got Lachona?
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Lachona.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Lachona.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Like that record right there, you can't play everywhere in New York.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: It depends on the crowd.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: It's gotta be like a heavy Central American, Mexican, and it fucking goes.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: Now, if I'm gonna play that record uptown to a straight Dominican, Puerto Rican, I'm gonna be like, I'm like, what the fuck is this nigga playing like?
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: I'll be like, what is this?
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what's he playing, yo?
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: So when you're like a live and shit, when you're like at 11 or live or whatever, like how do you take that temperature of the room?
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: How do you take this?
- 38:30SPEAKER_03: Caribbean.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: Caribbean, just Caribbean.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: All right, uh Caribbean side, bro.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: That's the Caribbean-Latino side right there, right?
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: For the most part, they got a lot of Cubans down there.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: And and and maybe the Latin that you get away with it.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: But like, let's say, let's say Friday, which is open format, or Sunday with straight hip hop.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: Nah, you don't do that.
- 38:47SPEAKER_02: And and and and live is live is like a little bit like Vegas because everybody at Live is I would say only 20% is from Miami.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: The rest is all tourists.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: And it's mostly Atlanta, New York, Chicago, DC, the West Coast.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: Get a little bit of West Coast for it.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: But it's it's that melting pot too.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: So you, you know, I live is straight, a lot of hits.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: A lot of hits.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Because you, you know, it's like Dre's.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: Dre's is a lot.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: It used to be a lot of people.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: Dre's is all right.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: Like, a lot of hits.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: Like, don't don't even lose the crowd going to Chicago to this.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you'll take care of that crew right there for a little while, but then you have to entertain for a massive crowd from everywhere.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: So just, you know, keep that in mind.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: So Dre's is no more?
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Drace is good.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Rest in peace.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: They have after hours, Dre's.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: I hear how Kassans kind of kind of take the hip-hop uh, you know, torch.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: So let's hope.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: We need that in Vegas.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: We need hip hop.
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: Dre's shout to Franson, by the way, who's the who's the guy who planted the seed at Dre's.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: That's facts.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: Heavy hitter, that's right.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: But you know, Dre's was special, man.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: That'd be over 20 years ago, easy.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know, about 10, 15.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: But let's just say Dre's was special for Vegas and hip-hop, the culture, because it was the only place in Vegas where you were getting like the real hip-hop artists.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: They were the only ones catering to hip-hop.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: There was nobody, no, everybody in Vegas was scared and stuck on EDM.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: And and, you know, they were the only ones booking us and the DJs and and all Matt Heavy hitters.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: E Feasy used to be there at Dre's, Dre Sinatra.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: Um, I I mean, I can name your whole gang that used to book all of us on a constant basis.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: Now it's gone, it was sad, it was a sad moment.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: And you know, uh, while we're here talking about music and everything, I want to know, Bonnix, what club are you playing jazz music at?
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, so I do the jazz radio music.
- 40:40SPEAKER_04: Blue note, the blue note.
- 40:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's talk about that, bro, because that's different.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: I do uh I do a radio show in Las Vegas.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Oh no, they got the the bomb sniffing dogs coming in the room right now.
- 40:53SPEAKER_05: Uh-oh.
- 40:54SPEAKER_05: Let's see them.
- 40:55SPEAKER_05: I want to see them.
- 40:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there you go.
- 40:57SPEAKER_05: I want to see them.
- 40:57SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 40:58SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 40:59SPEAKER_05: No, we can't see it.
- 40:59SPEAKER_05: We can't see it.
- 41:01SPEAKER_05: Oh, there you go.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, there you go.
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: There you go, there you go.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 41:03SPEAKER_05: So I do wow.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: Hold up.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: Hold up, bonics.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: Hold up, hold up, hold on.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: Where are you right now?
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: So we understand where are you right now?
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: I'm in Grand Grand Rapids, Michigan.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm on tour with Wizards and MGK right now.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: And so uh we're at a new, this is a new venue in Grand Rapids.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: So, you know, hit that heavy hitter drop on them today, you know?
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: So I do a I do a jazz, I do like a jazz show in Vegas on uh KUN V, which is a reporting smooth, it's a smooth jazz station, but during my show, I play like uh I play like what we used to play, you know.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: I go from I'll go from like Marvin Gaye to some new jazz shit like Thundercat, and then I'll play some yacht rock shit, and then I might play some ballads type shit, play some Janet Jackson.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: So it's not like this full sleep sleepy jazz joint, but I just have this idea, and this is just me speaking for myself, like, you know, I think a lot of music kind of is low vibrational, especially rap.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm trying to get ahead of that and shit that I I listen to.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: I listen to a lot of shit uh instrumental music, just so I don't feel like I'm too influenced by music and words and politics and that.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: So I do a jazz show every day at 5 p.m.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: in Las Vegas.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Uh it's actually moving to two hours.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: I went from Saturday night to every day, and now they want to do a two-hour show.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: So it's really, you know, the the letters and emails that that I get from people, because I could play like the thing that I love to do is tie it together.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: So I'll play a lot of old sample shit, like you know, Luther, remember, you know, the Luther sample or Wu-Tang sample, or and then I'll tie that in with like uh Bobby Caldwell joint, and then I'll throw a new Thundercat or like you know, Usef Days.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: So there's just all this amazing music happening right now that I feel like I'm getting a little bit ahead of a curve in.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: I'm not even ahead of a curve, just it's what's speaking to me right now.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: So I'm trying, I'm yeah, yeah, no.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: So it's real cool.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: You can tune in kumv.org.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: And last year, last summer, I I was top five in that in that slot.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: So that was dope to yo.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Do you do you ever like put those do you ever put those mixes up like somewhere?
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: Like sound anywhere.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: I I do.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll share them with you guys.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: I do tell the people, man, because that's you know that's they're they're on my mixed cloud right now.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: I have a a lot of them, so I don't post them all, but I gotta get serious about it coming up because now you're gonna do it.
- 43:22SPEAKER_04: Send them to JT and Y so they can live on the heavy hitters website.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: No, no, I I want to.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: I want to because I'm not sure.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: The genre is probably not there.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: So no, I got I got fucking send them.
- 43:31SPEAKER_02: We put them up on the heavy hitters um website for sure.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, y'all will like them.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, you you gray beards will like the these mixes, you know.
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: Send the top five, baby.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: I will.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: That's what makes the heavy hitter DJ special.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: It's been it's been fun to do something like that because it's like you know where I come from.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: You know, I could play, you could talk, you know, it's it's there's still radio involved, like storytelling, or you know, when Michael Jackson movie was out, I was like kind of heavy on the Jacksons and Being able to like just talk about it, you know?
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: So I still think that connection and radio and shit is still still out there.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: Good shit, man.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 44:08SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: Well, Cass, enough.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: Talk to me.
- 44:13SPEAKER_03: So what what do you um what do you see for yourself in the future?
- 44:18SPEAKER_03: What do you feel is your next move?
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: He needs better internet.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be real.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is my internet bad right now?
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: Uh I'll be real with you guys.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: I don't want to say I'm struggling because I don't think that's the right word.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: I'm like just having a lot of reflection on how I want to exist, which means like that's why I'm doing things like the jazz joint, and I'm just really being patient with myself and not, you know, I think when we're young and hustling, we want everybody's attention.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: We need, and I think as we get older and there's all these people in their space, I'm honestly just, and I don't want to use the word mental health or whatever, but I'm just trying to figure out how to exist without making decisions from survival mode, you know.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: We all come from this era of hustle and I'm asleep when I die and shit.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: And like that's cool because it got us to a point.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: But what I'm trying to do with this 45-year-old guy who was able to eat off hip hop is like, how can I keep that community still going and be there for the younger cats?
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: And so I'm I'm going through my own sort of like, how do I exist?
- 45:21SPEAKER_00: Because I don't necessarily want to get kicked in the balls for likes or I don't think it's doing it already, bro.
- 45:27SPEAKER_04: I think you're doing it because the answer is you're being yourself.
- 45:31SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 45:32SPEAKER_04: The most important thing that any dish jockey could be is themselves because that exudes through the speakers, it exudes to the camera.
- 45:40SPEAKER_04: People see the truth to that.
- 45:42SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: I see people are good.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: And just you, for example, you're doing that jazz show.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: It's just you.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Who the fuck is doing that?
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: No, you are right, right?
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: And you're on stage with 30,000 people in front of you, and then you're doing a couple of things.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: And I think at the end of the day, bro, as long as you're happy, right?
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: That's all that matters, man.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: But you know, I speak for myself, I speak I'm happy doing what I do, and I don't expect everybody to be out to a club every day.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: I like playing for these twenty 19-year-olds and then going to a uh standard club.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: But I like that's me.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: I'm in my happy space.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: I don't need to be the top-notch guy.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: No, I'm doing me and whatever.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: For you, you know, you gotta be happy.
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: And I I think, yeah, I think you are like enough says, you're being yourself.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: And I'm and I and I think that's what kind of brought me through this far.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: Was just like, you know, my own unique person that has gone through this.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: But, you know, sometimes I long for the dude that wanted to sleep when I die.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: Like, what happens in my like 30, you know, like when I go to these cities and no disrespect, like I don't even reach out to people much anymore because I'm just like self-preservation and like I used and that that was the consciousness then was like, yo, let me hit the city, let me hit everyone, let me network.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: And now as we get older, like we can't.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: Here's a good analogy that I that I have.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: That I what would Michael Jordan be like if he still played in the league right now?
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: And so as older people, we gotta find different leagues or make a shoe, or I'm a big Charles Barclay fan.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: Like, I love what he's outside of basketball, but he's still around it, he's still involved, he's still, and that's what I think us older cats like look, we still could be the man in your city and doing all that, etc.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: But what it look like if Michael Jordan was still, he would be getting dunked on and shit right now.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: So that's what I'm trying to tell myself is like I don't need to be in all these spaces.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: I don't need to be DJing at all these parties that I know I would do good at, the bangers and the ribs and whatever.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: I don't let the kid like let the young version of me have that.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: And so I'm trying to be more of like a how can people look up because look, I'm gonna say this there's a lot of people our age who've been doing it for a while, who pose and present themselves like they're like the heartbeat of the city, but they're broke, you know?
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: And it's not about money, it's about being able to take care of ourselves, our health, our wealth, our family, and and like our brain to just like be able to uh move into a new space where, yeah, you know what, this is different than us.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: We used to be on the radio every day.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: I used to be the face of this station.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: I used to be, and now it's different, but that doesn't mean that we're less or so.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: I just think that sometimes I look at some of my peers who aren't the high school quarterbacks anymore, and they're like really hard on themselves.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: It's like I I want, I have like a lot of empathy for that, and people who are our age, who used to be the center of attention.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: And I'm not saying that I am or I'm not, it's just like this is all a new space.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: Hip hop, like it's 50 years of it.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: Like you guys were pioneers, there were pioneers before you, but not many, and they're still figuring it out, you know?
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: So I would just say, like, keep your community close, and then like I know that the ratchet, you know, ratchet behavior is still people are still moving like that, which is cool.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: Have fun.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: But as we get older, dude, you know, I had a heart attack 15 years ago.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, enough had health stuff.
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: Like, we gotta remind our peers and our friends, like, it's cool to be seen as the party guy, but like, are you cool?
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: Are you living?
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: Like, so my a lot of my mind thought now is like, how do I want to live that?
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: And what I, you know, and I what I don't want to do is feel like I'm trying to, and my big thing right now is in making decisions, not in survival mode.
- 49:28SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, gotta take this gig because I gotta pay my bills.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to be a more of like, I'm trying to be like Camillo, man.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 49:35SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to be like Camillo.
- 49:36SPEAKER_04: I get it.
- 49:37SPEAKER_04: Like for me, I'm an older statesman, and I can say this out of pure honesty.
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 49:42SPEAKER_04: I used to always look at the old man at the bar, right?
- 49:45SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: And I look at the old man at the bar and I'd be like, yo, that guy's gotta be 60 years old.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: What is he doing here?
- 49:53SPEAKER_04: And I'm looking at the crowd.
- 49:54SPEAKER_04: The crowd is 18, 19, 21, maybe, if that.
- 49:58SPEAKER_04: So I said to myself, I never want to be the old guy in the bar, right?
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: So where Camelo says he's enjoys DJing for 19 year olds, I don't.
- 50:09SPEAKER_04: Not to not to box myself out because I don't believe that's not what it is.
- 50:13SPEAKER_04: But I just want to be able to do the shit that I enjoy, and that's it.
- 50:17SPEAKER_04: But if that limits me to a certain space, I'm cool with it.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 50:22SPEAKER_04: I'm and that's really cool with it.
- 50:25unknown: Right.
- 50:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's cool.
- 50:25SPEAKER_00: We gotta hear that though, though, because I still think people want to hold on to that.
- 50:29SPEAKER_00: I'm the man, I'm the main character.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: I'm like, nah, dude, like you gotta help help your peers, help, you know, like and it's a mix of that.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: So, you know, and the reality is nothing lasts forever, man.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: Let's keep it a fucking buck, you know.
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: You have to grow and mature, and nothing lasts forever.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: And and at one point, I'm realistic, like, okay, when it's time to give up these clubs, whatever, I'm cool.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm you know, I'm just you gotta be happy, man.
- 50:53SPEAKER_02: You know, I don't I refuse to get rid of my vinyl, man, for a reason because that shit makes me happy.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: I still have turntables, like, you know what I'm saying?
- 51:01SPEAKER_02: Like, I want to do something with that, but I'm holding on to that.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: All of that, you know, like and I would add though, like for young people, like, and again, I'm not, I'm figuring this out right now.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: Like, set yourself up.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: I know that this is not a save your money podcast, but it's important, dude.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: I know I see a lot of my peers out here looking like they're the man, but like are barely making it.
- 51:23SPEAKER_00: And like just on a health level, dude, like we gotta have a real conversation of ourselves of just like, how can we keep this existing?
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: How can we create keep creating spaces that we want to be in?
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: Um, but also like, you know, worry about our health.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: And and because like, dude, we were so focused on the prize that I, you know, I wish I was more healthier, you know, 15 years ago.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: You know, now I'm catching up.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: Catching up.
- 51:45SPEAKER_02: I think I think that's the beauty of the heavy-headed DJs and and our chat because we all got experiences.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, a lot of us, some of us in the crew, beat cancer, hat cancer, some guy diabetes, and we all talking all this talk.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: Yo, yo, get yourself right.
- 51:59SPEAKER_02: Yo, go to the doctor, yo, hit the gym, la la la.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: Motherfuckers need to hear that.
- 52:03SPEAKER_02: Because it's not all about fucking reposado and you know what I'm saying?
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, a lot of these rappers, they don't, they're like you just see how they are when they're older.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: They're not graceful, like about how they're, you know, we see in people like I and with no res, you know, all respect.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: Like I saw that clip of Little Skies recently, you know, where I don't know if you saw that, but Little Skies is talking about having to, he was looking for a job at Dollar General last year.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: He's like, I'm not making the money, I'm not touring, I have no shame in my game, so I'm gonna apply for my job.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: But that's you know, there there is like this level of hip hop where what I don't want to be a part of is just because you're old, I'm not gonna support you or feel like you didn't contribute.
- 52:40SPEAKER_00: And like, you know, we have to change that narrative.
- 52:42SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: Little skies, that reminds to me, little skies is like like for me at least, like the the rolling loud era.
- 52:49SPEAKER_02: I that's what I call it.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: Right, that's that era of rappers that you know they were bubbling, you know.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: I don't want to say the mumble rapper, but yeah, that era.
- 52:57SPEAKER_02: Right, you know what I'm saying?
- 52:58SPEAKER_00: Now, now you don't see them as the look, the look was crazier than the raps.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: And that's what made that's what made them stick out was like look at Lil Zane, he looks got this tattoos on his face.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: Wow, but you know, Gucci gang and shit, you know, all that right, right.
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: Right, even and not all of them are Wiz Khalifa.
- 53:17SPEAKER_02: Look at his careers versus those, you know, that were so massive, and you used to see these crowds, but it was a lot of this going on, bro.
- 53:26SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: I think.
- 53:27SPEAKER_00: But pay attention to Wiz.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Cass.
- 53:29SPEAKER_00: Let me just throw this in there.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: If you look at Wiz, and I'm not saying that Wiz is he's healthy, dude.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: He's working out every day, he's he's the best dad, dude.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: His business is straight.
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: He has this day one teams with him, and that's what I'm saying about watch how these people gracefully like because here's what I here's what I've been saying.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: It's not what you do, it's how you do it.
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: Are you a good person?
- 53:51SPEAKER_00: Are you taking care of yourself?
- 53:52SPEAKER_00: Are you being contributing to the community around you?
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: So I just want people to, it's the clout and shit is fun.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: You know, we had great times being there, but like, how do you age?
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: How do you age gracefully?
- 54:03SPEAKER_00: You know, look at like some of the I love seeing some of those New York like podcast guys and shit.
- 54:07SPEAKER_00: They're they look good and they're aging gracefully, you know what I mean?
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: I think with the 15th.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: Of course, of course.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: We I think we're in a space right now, like to your point with all that, where we're finally getting with hip-hop, where we're not just throwing away legends and throwing away people that came before us.
- 54:27SPEAKER_03: Like, it kind of blows my mind because I deal with a lot of a lot of catalog things and older and art older acts and seeing things like that.
- 54:33SPEAKER_03: And when I see that some a band like ACDC is still touring, selling out stadiums at their age, and I'm like, yo, that's not a thing.
- 54:42SPEAKER_03: Why don't we see that in hip hop?
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: Now we're starting to see that now little by little.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, we have like Wu Tang, who's been around since like 92, 93, and they're still very much, you know, very much respected, and they could go out and sell shows, you know, Nas, Jay-Z, all these guys.
- 54:57SPEAKER_03: But you know, it's something that I think we have to as a community have to work on, even with all around.
- 55:02SPEAKER_03: And I'm talking about like on the aspect of holding up our legendary DJs, our legendary acts, our legendary anything that has to do with our hip hop culture, which is like I felt like there was a point where we were just if you wasn't young, you was getting thrown out, right?
- 55:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I mean it's now where people are getting more are getting kind of like I don't want to say.
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: Educated on the longevity.
- 55:28SPEAKER_03: Because I think it's about yeah, but it's also education.
- 55:31SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, obviously you're gonna have people that that if like okay, let's be honest about it.
- 55:36SPEAKER_03: Like, if hip hop is 50 years, like Wu Tang came out what '93, we're now in 2026.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: That's like 20 something years.
- 55:43SPEAKER_03: When I was in when I was a kid listening to Wu Tang, you would have gave me a song, an album from 1973, I would have looked at you like you were crazy.
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: So I get it.
- 55:50SPEAKER_03: I understand it, right?
- 55:52SPEAKER_03: I understand it.
- 55:53SPEAKER_03: But also, I think since hip-hop is aging, I think it's it's starting to age a little bit more gracefully, right?
- 56:00SPEAKER_03: Well, you have people that are like, you know, yourself, Camillo, myself, enough, that are have been able to see a lot and still revere things from our past that continue on, you know what I'm saying?
- 56:11SPEAKER_03: And are able to, like, you know, I don't have kids, but you get in a car with your kid and you're like, yo, listen, this this is what I used to listen to.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: They might clown you, right, right, but at least they know they know it, right?
- 56:21SPEAKER_03: That's important.
- 56:22SPEAKER_04: Yo, a lot of these legendary artists are still dropping, bro.
- 56:24SPEAKER_04: A Z just dropped, right?
- 56:26SPEAKER_04: Nas dropped a few albums recently.
- 56:28SPEAKER_04: Mob Deep dropped an album.
- 56:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, L L Cool J dropped the album, Q2 produced it.
- 56:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's on there's a bunch of shit out there.
- 56:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, right, and it's on the like I have a bunch of younger nephews that I share playlists with, and where I just throw stuff in there like this.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: We call it the Things You Should Know playlist.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: That's dope.
- 56:47SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 56:48SPEAKER_03: You should know this, and they're like, Well, you know, we'll talk about it.
- 56:50SPEAKER_03: Well, I like this or that shit was trash, which is fine.
- 56:54SPEAKER_03: I'm like, yo, you're entitled to your own opinion.
- 56:55SPEAKER_03: You might not like it, but it's the things that they do like kind of surprise me sometimes when they're like, oh yeah, I love that protect your neck.
- 57:01SPEAKER_03: I'll be like, you understand that.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: That's yeah, I love it.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: You know, and it's just falls on everybody.
- 57:06SPEAKER_03: So I also don't like when people blame, like, oh well, they don't listen to anything.
- 57:10SPEAKER_03: Well, because we have to kind of like be like, hey guys, give them the backstory, right?
- 57:14SPEAKER_04: If you share with them, you'd be surprised what they if you share with them, you'd be surprised how they react to it.
- 57:19SPEAKER_03: Right, but you're giving them you also give them context, you're giving them a song where they're talking about Sky Pagers and shit.
- 57:25SPEAKER_03: They don't know what that is.
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: Facts.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: That's facts.
- 57:29SPEAKER_03: We had Riot on the podcast before and like when you listen to Riot's production, for those who don't know or just catching up right now, Riot is DJ Enough's son, EJ, which we've all seen growing up.
- 57:38SPEAKER_03: And he he was uh uh uh um lucky enough to grow up around a bunch of uncles that were all playing music for him all the time.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: So EJ's production, when you listen to it, he's taking songs that draw from not just his youth, but our youth.
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, yo, that's all because of enough.
- 57:56SPEAKER_03: That's because of him being around his pops, his pops playing all these this this whole um gamut of music that poke that up, you know.
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: So again, I'm just saying it's up to everybody, but we need to kind of get there.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: We can nobody else gonna do it for us, right?
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we gotta do it.
- 58:14SPEAKER_00: We gotta like just help hold each other up, man.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: I know I'm not super vocal in the chat, but I'm listening and I watch everything, and I'm just happy to see people like just exist at our age, man.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: And and I I keep saying that, not in like that we're old or not relevant at all or anything, but dude, it's just by the way, you're not old at all.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:33SPEAKER_00: I mean we need the heavy hitters.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: He's 85.
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: It feels like it.
- 58:39SPEAKER_00: It feels like it.
- 58:40SPEAKER_00: It feels like it.
- 58:41SPEAKER_00: But nah, man, I'm having a good time just navigating.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: You know, I just got booked at Hakassan later in July.
- 58:46SPEAKER_00: So just like every victory, like in the last year, I got like last year, I got to do tiny desk with Wiz, you know, scratching and singing on there.
- 58:54SPEAKER_05: That's dope.
- 58:55SPEAKER_00: And that's why my duty is I'll any space that I can get in to represent DJing in the right way, that's all I'm gonna do.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: And if it's if it's about being a the playing the black background character and hitting the where where or being able to use my voice to say, yo, make some fucking noise for Wiz Khalifa.
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm gonna play.
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: I'm so thankful, dude.
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: We like here giving all you guys your flowers, like we're living our dream, bro.
- 59:19SPEAKER_00: And even though there's been these dramas and shit, like it's just the world putting us in place, you know what I'm saying?
- 59:25SPEAKER_00: Like, so I'm so I'm so proud to be a part of this.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: Again, I know I'm not always waving the flag.
- 59:30SPEAKER_00: I think people wave the flag in different parts of their lives.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: I've just been in this like real in inward journey of just like how to exist and not and not punish myself because I think overachieving is amazing.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: Like, if we can overachieve, it's amazing.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: But sometimes I think sometimes overachieving is punishing for us because like we want to be the best.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: We come from that culture.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: We're like, we gotta be the best on the block.
- 59:52SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: We all we all can be the best.
- 59:55SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 59:56SPEAKER_00: We all can be the best.
- 59:56SPEAKER_02: One more thing, one more thing before we go.
- 59:58SPEAKER_02: I I always like to ask the heavy-headed DJs, how'd you get down with the crew?
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_02: Can you tell us how it happened?
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_02: Did they put you on?
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_02: Is something you wanted, or somebody hollered at you?
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: Talk to us, let that be a little bit more.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_00: No, I think from my point of view, I think Juggy from, you know, of course, the legend Juggy.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: Salt Lake City.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_00: Put my name on the radar for Enough.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_00: But then me and even shortly after that, after they announced me being the heavy hitter, like Enough spent some time in Minnesota.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, man.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: I just always get like a family thing from Enough.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: I, you know, not just looking up to him, but like him and just like his, he's just like a you know, he stayed at my crib, he was around my dog.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_00: We got him some gigs in.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: And so I don't know, man.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_00: The heavy hitter is just a safe place for me because I know I could always reach out.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: And, you know, it's something, you know, it's it's it comes in different seasons, you know.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll make my my way back to the East Coast, and or maybe I'll pop up on full time on a radio station again.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: Or, but you know, the heavy hitters, man, long live the heavy hitters.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for always.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: Well, I remember one time I came to visit when I was just getting to know Enough, and he took me to CBGB's, and we were there with Karen Rate, and I forget what artist was there, maybe Ferg.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_00: And, you know, he just like enough to me is like such a goat in New York, but for him to take the time to even text you back, or you know, he hit me with the text last week.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: Like, any of you guys want to be on the podcast?
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_00: And I'm just like, man, I've been so not active, but like they y'all still reach out.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_00: So it just means everything to me and anything I could do for you guys.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm just I'm just trying to, you know, keep representing, wave that flag.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_00: And as you could see, I had to make my own shit, but we got the heavy hitters, repping the heavy hitters, you know.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: Always, always power to the people.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_05: And the game, we gotta rep the Taylor game in here, too.

- 1:02:14SPEAKER_02: I hit my kids with it.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_02: You hear this?
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_00: Are they reacting though?
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_00: You played in the club?
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_02: They're not even up on it.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, they're not even up on it.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_02: Hold up a second though.

- 1:02:26SPEAKER_02: Okay.
