Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: New Zealand's netball team is about to get a serious upgrade.
- 0:03Speaker 1: The Netball New Zealand Bord is voted to update its
- 0:05Speaker 1: eligibility criteria. This is for silver Ferns. It means that
- 0:09Speaker 1: if you are an overseas based athlete you can still
- 0:13Speaker 1: play for the national team. This is a text from
- 0:16Speaker 1: one of our listeners this morning, Ryan. No coincidence that
- 0:19Speaker 1: Netball New Zealand have changed the goalpost this year since
- 0:21Speaker 1: they lost their best goal shooting Grace Noiki to the
- 0:23Speaker 1: Aussie League and won't let her be eligible for selection here.
- 0:27Speaker 1: She's also not eligible for Australia. It's a no brainer.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Joining me this morning is Margaret Foster, former Silver Fern
- 0:33Speaker 1: and former coach of the Canterbury Fames and the Southern
- 0:35Speaker 1: Steel Margaret, good morning, Good morning. So what do you
- 0:39Speaker 1: make of this change?
- 0:42Speaker 2: Well, yay, of course, yeah, without a doubt. I mean,
- 0:47Speaker 2: you know rips in your country. You need to have
- 0:49Speaker 2: your best athletes surely, regardless of where they're playing it
- 0:53Speaker 2: in the world. And yeah, no, I think it's brilliant.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Is the What was the rationale was to build a
- 1:01Speaker 1: better depth here in New Zealand. What was it?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Well, Originally it was I don't know if you remember,
- 1:08Speaker 2: but back in the day when Laura Langman was over
- 1:12Speaker 2: in Australia playing and she was not eligible to be
- 1:17Speaker 2: in the New Zealand team or to make the World
- 1:19Speaker 2: Cup team, and they kind of had to do an
- 1:21Speaker 2: exception for her. Back then, I think it was really
- 1:25Speaker 2: about trying to build our base and ensure that our
- 1:29Speaker 2: athletes were staying here in the country to play netball.
- 1:33Speaker 2: But it just look, you need to if you want
- 1:37Speaker 2: to be playing like top level netboard. The best competition
- 1:41Speaker 2: is in Australia at the moment.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Does this potentially make that situation worse in a way
- 1:49Speaker 1: by making their competition stronger? If you know, if you
- 1:53Speaker 1: don't need to be in New Zealand to play for
- 1:55Speaker 1: the Silver Ferns, then I suppose why would you.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, well, at the end of the that that competition
- 2:01Speaker 2: over in Australia has got all the top athletes, so
- 2:06Speaker 2: you know, so your week in leak out playing with
- 2:10Speaker 2: the best and against the best, Like you know, you've
- 2:13Speaker 2: got the Jamaicans, You've got the English, you've got the
- 2:17Speaker 2: South Africans, are all all the top athletes are over
- 2:20Speaker 2: there playing, so you know, it can only actually make
- 2:23Speaker 2: you a better athletes as well, and then you can
- 2:25Speaker 2: come back and represent your country and bring in that
- 2:28Speaker 2: wonderful form that you've got from playing as an a.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Level the club teams do we have a competition that's
- 2:36Speaker 1: you know Trans Tasman.
- 2:39Speaker 2: No, And that's the biggest thing is that we really
- 2:42Speaker 2: need to get back into that competition over in Australia,
- 2:47Speaker 2: Like you know, it's that's that's our biggest thing. I think,
- 2:51Speaker 2: you know, like we've we've trialed, we've gone our separate
- 2:54Speaker 2: ways and it doesn't really work if you're looking if
- 2:58Speaker 2: you're looking at the product that we've got in New Zealand.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I just don't know.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I just think it's it would be much better if
- 3:09Speaker 2: we try to get back into that competition.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounds like we would all benefit from it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Mag Thank you. That's Margaret Foster, a former Silver Fern,
- 3:19Speaker 1: former Canterbury Fames and Southern Steel coach, talking on the
- 3:22Speaker 1: change to the eligibility criteria for from Netball end Z
- 3:27Speaker 1: for the Silver Ferns. So there you go. Be good
- 3:28Speaker 1: news for any you know hot not hot, I mean
- 3:33Speaker 1: late impressive netballers who are living overseas in Australia right now,
- 3:39Speaker 1: including Grace and RICKI. For more from Early Edition with
