- 0:00Welcome to the Humanistic Leadership Podcast, and I'm Dr. Craig Nathanson.
- 0:05Today, I want to talk about something that we all experience.
- 0:09It's those moments when we simply don't feel like showing up.
- 0:14We don't feel like exercising. We don't feel like creating.
- 0:18We don't feel like having, you know, the difficult conversation.
- 0:21We don't feel like working on our goals.
- 0:24We don't even feel like getting started. And yet many times the quality of our
- 0:28life is shaped Not by the days we feel inspired But by the days we decide to show up Anyway,
- 0:35I've learned over the years that motivation is Is often overrated.
- 0:40You know, action creates momentum, and motion changes emotion.
- 0:47Sometimes the hardest part is not the work itself. The hardest part is just beginning.
- 0:52For me, one example is my daily stretching and core exercises.
- 0:56I've had some, you know, back issues over the years, and my wife,
- 1:02Natasha, has really helped me understand the importance of, you know,
- 1:05strengthening, stretching, and taking care of my body.
- 1:09And the interesting thing is this. Almost every day I can find a reason not
- 1:13to do it. Maybe later. Maybe tomorrow.
- 1:16Maybe I'm too busy. Maybe I'm too tired.
- 1:20And the exercises only take about 20 minutes.
- 1:23But once I begin, even five minutes into the routine, I'm always glad I showed
- 1:27up. My body starts to feel better.
- 1:29My mind becomes calmer.
- 1:32And another small promise to myself gets honored.
- 1:36And that's an important phase for me. Another small promise to myself, as I said, gets honored.
- 1:42I think many of us, you know, understand or underestimate the emotional power
- 1:47of just keeping those small promises to ourselves.
- 1:51Take a quiet moment and ask yourself, what is one small thing I keep avoiding
- 1:56that I know would help my life?
- 1:59Maybe it's a walk. Maybe it's rest. Maybe it's writing. Maybe it's reaching out to someone.
- 2:08Maybe it's finally beginning something meaningful What would happen if you simply
- 2:13showed up for 10 minutes?
- 2:17As I've gotten older, I realize that showing up consistently is connected to
- 2:21another important idea, vision.
- 2:23Where are we trying to go with our life? When I was younger,
- 2:26there were periods in my life when I was doing work that really didn't connect to who I was becoming.
- 2:34And, you know, during those years, I spent a lot of time visualizing the kind of life that I wanted.
- 2:39Not perfectly, not in every detail But I imagined, you know,
- 2:43meaningful work Freedom,
- 2:45creativity, teaching Helping people grow Having deeper conversations about the
- 2:51life and leadership As I've gotten older, I've continued to polish that vision You know,
- 2:58trimming it, modifying it as needed Refining it And what's interesting is that,
- 3:04you know, much of that vision Slowly became the life that, you know,
- 3:07I'm living today Not because life was easy, not because everything worked perfectly
- 3:12But because direction matters And I think we should think about our life as an open canvas You know,
- 3:18before we begin to paint We need to spend time understanding what we want to create,
- 3:25And many times, the life we eventually build begins quietly Through those repeated
- 3:30moments of just showing up So ask yourself now What kind of life am I slowly painting?
- 3:39Does my daily behavior align with the future I say that I want?
- 3:44What is one small adjustment that would move me one step closer toward a more
- 3:50meaningful and joyful life?
- 3:52Years ago, I also began to realize that achievement by itself was not enough for me.
- 3:59I can complete those projects, attend meetings, reach my objectives.
- 4:04But eventually, I began to ask myself a deeper question. Does my work feel meaningful?
- 4:12That question changed my life.
- 4:14For me, it slowly moved the direction towards teaching more,
- 4:20writing, coaching, speaking, and building ideas around human growth and humanistic leadership.
- 4:27And maybe that's another important reminder. Sometimes showing up is not only about discipline.
- 4:34Sometimes it's about listening carefully to what your inner voice has been trying to tell you.
- 4:40So today, if you don't feel like showing up, remember this. You don't need to
- 4:45have everything figured out.
- 4:47You do not need to feel perfectly motivated.
- 4:51And you don't need those dramatic changes.
- 4:54Sometimes growth just happens quietly.
- 4:58One walk, one page, one workout, doubt, one conversation, one thoughtful moment,
- 5:06one small promise honored.
- 5:09Sometimes the life we want is built slowly through the moments we decided just
- 5:14to show up, even when we didn't feel like it.
- 5:17This is the Humanistic Leadership Podcast.
- 5:20I'm Dr. Craig Nathanson. Thanks for listening.
