- 2:17National Broadcasting Company presents a new series of programs transcribed to expose the inside secrets
- 2:23of gamblers, racketeers, and con men. It's called easy Money, Easy
- 2:30money. There's no such thing as easy money. Mike Trent, famous rackets
- 2:35detective and ex magician, has an exciting story of an easy money swindle for
- 2:38you. Here he is that super sleuth who makes an honest living out of
- 2:43fraud. Mike Trent, thank you though the good Some of you may have
- 2:46heard of a particularly daring and difficult type of shoplifting known as the gem switch.
- 2:53This particular swindle started in a small jewelry store on the ground floor of
- 2:55the building where I have my office, the Romna Jewelry Store. How do
- 3:00you do, sir? Something I could do for you? A crawl is
- 3:04my name? I take it your mister Romner, the proprietor, Yes,
- 3:07a mister Romner I'm interested in buying an unusual ring, something exceptional, A
- 3:13man or lady's mounting ladies. I want something extra good, or mister crawl,
- 3:17we have one of the finest assortments of women's rings in the city,
- 3:21gorgeous gems that defy comparison, I know, but the ring I want must
- 3:25be outstanding. I have the money, and well, I want a ring
- 3:30like no other anywhere else. Such rings cost a great deal of money,
- 3:34and if I'm prepared to tayl let's say, an excellent five thousand dollars in
- 3:38such a case, I can really show you something. You'll have to pardon
- 3:42me a minute. Such merchandise we don't keep in the showcase. Yes,
- 3:45I suppose goods like that make ordinary jewelry look rather flesh. That's right,
- 3:49I'll be right back, sure enough, customer father, I hope. So.
- 4:00I think maybe he'll buy one of those expensive rings we got on consignment.
- 4:04I've been scared of death having those things in the safe here without more
- 4:08insurance. Then nobody knows they're here except us. I think we're safe from
- 4:12gangsters. But this customer, do you know anything about him? No?
- 4:15But he looks like a gentleman, and he talked about being as much as
- 4:18five thousand dollars for a ring. You're sure he has that much money.
- 4:21Don't be such a one, Sonya. You don't hold a gun on a
- 4:25man while you're trying to sell him a five thousand dollar ring. That's no
- 4:28way of doing business. Wait a minute, I think it's in the drawer
- 4:31of this work bench. Oh, sonya, you think I carry a gun
- 4:34in one hand and the ring and the other. You think I insolve the
- 4:38man? Of course not. But I'm going to have this revolver handy in
- 4:41my purse and I'll saunder back out of the front of the store with you.
- 4:45Well, if you do it that way, all right, I guess
- 4:47couldn't hurt anything. I think I'll show him the Russian ruby first. Yes,
- 4:54it's the most expensive of the lot. We'd make the most money on
- 4:56it. What is more important, It is the finest. Oh there you
- 5:00are. I thought maybe you'd forgotten me. I had to open the safe.
- 5:04Rings like this can't be traded callously, That's all I understand. This
- 5:09is my daughter, sonya. Mister Kroll, How do you do? How
- 5:11do you do? Mister Kroll? I think you'll be thrilled to death with
- 5:15this ring. I know that any woman would do well. It's a very
- 5:18special lady, one who deserves the best there is. Let's see it,
- 5:23or, mister Crowle. Before I show you the ring, I want to
- 5:25tell you something about its history. You remember that the jewels of the Tarina
- 5:29were smuggled out of Russia years ago by the royal family. Oh, yes,
- 5:33yes, it seems to me I've heard something of the sort. Yes.
- 5:36Among those jewels were two superlative ruby rings made for the Tarna's nieces rubies.
- 5:44Why I thought rubies were rather inexpensive. Perhaps you think of synthetic rubies,
- 5:49mister Krawle. No, synthetic rubies are not rare, but I don't
- 5:55think I know the difference. Well, real rubies can be melted at an
- 6:00extremely high temperature. When a genuine ruby is cut, there are lots of
- 6:03scraps, more scraps than genuine ruby. In some cases, those scraps are
- 6:09melted down and made into synthetic gems. Oh, then a synthetic ruby isn't
- 6:14actually a complete invitation, is it. No, many of them are quite
- 6:17beautiful, and they're made of the same basic material. As a real ruby,
- 6:21but they don't equal their genuine ruby's beauty, and they are still synthetic
- 6:27no matter how well they're treated. And that's interesting. But let's see this
- 6:30ring. It is known as between Russian ruby because it is one of two
- 6:35that are exactly alike. It came from the Imperial Russian Collection and is mounted
- 6:40in platinum with craftsmanship that can be duplicated today at any price. Where the
- 6:46made to this ring is nobody knows well, the build up is fine,
- 6:48But let's see the ring. Mister Kroll, prepared to feast your eyes on
- 6:53one of the finest gems of the world. That is a beauty. Do
- 7:01you mind if I take it over closer to the window. I'd like to
- 7:04examine it in a little better light. I'll carry it over for you then
- 7:11natural light evens the brilliance doesn't. Oh, it's a splendid gem. We'll
- 7:18take it back to the counter now if you don't mind, and you're awfully
- 7:21careful of it, don't you. I'd be careful if anything worth five thousand
- 7:26dollars. Well, mister Krall interested, Well, I I don't know,
- 7:31honestly, it's hard to make up my mind. I naturally thought of a
- 7:36diamond, and well, of course I don't want to press you, but
- 7:39it is a beautiful ring. Could I examine them mounting a little more closely
- 7:45if it doesn't show up much in that deep plush box here you are,
- 7:48father, Please don ya notice the intricacy of the engraving, mister Krall.
- 7:54Beautiful craftsmanship worthy of a very lovely lady. Yes, remarkable, but it
- 8:01makes your daughter nervous to have me handle it here you you'd better take it
- 8:05back. Oh, it's not that I don't trust you, mister Krawl.
- 8:07It is just as well she hasn't offended you. My daughter sometimes acts like
- 8:11she doesn't think I'm capable of taking care of myself with that Dora. I'm
- 8:16sure you understand, mister Krawl. We don't own that ring. We have
- 8:18it on consignment from a wholestale jewelry house. Yeah, it's a terrible responsibility.
- 8:24If anything should happen to it, well, we'd have to make up
- 8:28the loss. Well, I didn realize I thought I go on back and
- 8:31finish polishing the silver. I want to apologize, mister Kroller. I appreciate
- 8:37it. If it's only that, well, I am not accustomed to being
- 8:39regarded as a suspicious character, particularly when I want to make a substantial purchase.
- 8:43I'm suferable buying this ring, mister Kroll. That would not be making
- 8:48any mistake. You say the price is five thousand dollars. Yes, well,
- 8:52I have to ask Catherine how she feels about a ruby. I'm sure
- 8:56she's expecting a diamond. Well, maybe you'd like to bring the young lady
- 8:58in to see the ring. If she doesn't like it, we can show
- 9:01her the diet has a splendid idea. I'll bring her tomorrow. Maybe i'll
- 9:05send her in a loane. That way, Catherine wouldn't feel I was trying
- 9:09to influence a choice. Fine, we'll be expecting her. Well, i'll
- 9:13have to be running along. Thanks for your trouble, and I think we'll
- 9:15be able to make a deal. Goodbye. Then we'll be looking for her.
- 9:22All right, go ahead and say it the young lady. You're going
- 9:26to spoil a sale for me. I don't care. I didn't like his
- 9:28look. When the man wants to spend five thousand dollars with us, does
- 9:31he have to look like Clark Gable? He was all right. I still
- 9:35think there was something funny about it, like what he came in to find
- 9:39out what the ring looks like. Tomorrow he'll send in the girl is mall
- 9:43with a cheap paste imitation of the twin Russian ruby. She'll switch rings and
- 9:48skip out with the real way. So many detective stories you've been reading,
- 9:52it's ridiculous. What's so ridiculous about it? Do you think there'd be anything
- 9:56funny about having a five thousand dollars ring stolen? Promise in the first place?
- 10:00Nobody could make a passable paste imitation of that ring, particularly from memory.
- 10:05Even you would be able to spot it. Oh, I guess that's
- 10:09right, Dan, I'm just jittery. This thing is worth so much money,
- 10:15isn't it a beauty? You'll make what was her name? Catherine?
- 10:20Very happy? A right back into the safe you go, but I hope
- 10:26not for long. Hi, runner house business clarc mister Morris, A sight
- 10:39for sore eyes. You are Sonia, Sonia, mister Morris from the jewelry
- 10:43houses. Here. I'll be right there. Nice girl, you got there,
- 10:46runa Sonya. Yes, I'm certainly glad you came. Marris. I
- 10:50was hoping you'd get around. Say you don't mean to say, you want
- 10:52to place a big order. Oh no, it's that consignment of rare jewels.
- 10:56It's been driving us crazy. Now the consignment, say, that's really
- 11:01why I came, Ramda, Well that was nice of you. Well how
- 11:03do you do, mister Morris? How are I hope you're going to take
- 11:07back that consignment of treasure? Huh? Why so anxious to get rid of
- 11:11it? I got customer's particular death. To have stuff like that around the
- 11:15responsibility is too much for us. Oh well, there's just one thing.
- 11:18The real reason I came. I've been holding my breath waiting to find out.
- 11:24Now let me hold onto the counter before I ask, did you sell
- 11:28the twin Russian ruby? Well, we almost made a sail on it.
- 11:33The man was interested, but he didn't buy, not yet. Oh boy,
- 11:35is that a relief, woul relief? I thought you wanted to sell
- 11:41that jewel, not that one. Baby. I guess this is my lucky
- 11:43day. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret, a secret.
- 11:46Why don't you what secret that could be? Mister Romna, I own the
- 11:52other twin Russian ruby, me, not the company, but me, what
- 11:56I thought? No, I know that's what everybody? And get this,
- 12:01not even the company knows about the other one. I picked it up myself.
- 12:05Or what will you do with it? Do it? Do you realize
- 12:09what this means alone? The rings awake about five thousand bucks apiece. Together
- 12:15the work were the king's ransom. Yes, that I can see. I
- 12:18took a plane out here. I've been gone half nuts wondering if maybe you'd
- 12:22sold the other one, so i'd have to pay somebody to the nose for
- 12:24it. And I didn't dare ride a phone. Why nots Are you kidding?
- 12:28You think I'd let the company get wind of it? That ruin everything.
- 12:31They'd say I bought this other twin ruby as their employee instead of for
- 12:35myself. That'd be a lot of complications. Oh yes, yes, I
- 12:39suppose, And folks, this is your lucky day too, a horse.
- 12:43But I don't see how, mister Romner, I'm gonna buy the other twin
- 12:48Russian ruby from you at the retail price. You make out a bill of
- 12:52sale of me with my name on it, You turning the rest of the
- 12:56rings to me as representative of the company, and give me faty eight hundred
- 13:01bucks the wholesale price of the twin ruby. Then the company won't get any
- 13:05beef. But if it, do you think that would be honest? Honest?
- 13:11You've given them their price, aren't you. What's dishonest about making a
- 13:13straight sale? I could send somebody else and to buy it for me,
- 13:18but that isn't the way I do business. Everything above board. The company
- 13:22gets its price, you get your profit. I get the ring. We
- 13:28wouldn't be doing anything wrong, Dad, Maybe not, well, maybe not.
- 13:33It'll give you a twelve hundred buck profit. That should be wait to
- 13:37worry of having that consignment around her. I guess sorry like that, I
- 13:41can stand more off. You're fine. Now bring me the other twin ruby
- 13:45quick. I can hardly wait to get my mix on it. It will
- 13:48just take a minute. I'll be right back. It's a wonderful arrangement,
- 13:50mister Morris. The company makes its profit, we make ours, and you
- 13:54will make a fortune. Everybody comes out of here, be nice. If
- 13:58all business turned out that way, I should say, So, here you
- 14:01are, mister Morris. Do you want to give me a check or catch
- 14:03check? Of course? And it's good. Don't worry. Now let's take
- 14:07a look at the ring. Here you are, ye? I'll step over
- 14:11here to the window. I've been afraid to let it out of my hands
- 14:13so much money I can't say I blame you. Hey, what are you
- 14:18trying to pull? Ra What do you mean you'll never get away with it?
- 14:22Away with what? Holding out on me? I offered you a fair
- 14:26proposition, mighty fair? What are you saying? You know what I'm talking
- 14:31about? All right? Dot, Come on? Where have you ditched a
- 14:33real twin Ruby? The real twin Ruby? You mean this cheap taste limitation
- 14:39one full of score kid? Not anybody let alone me. Now, Let's
- 14:41have the real one, and no funny business jokes like that scare me.
- 14:48Don't let me see it. Don't act so innocent, Ramna. Here,
- 14:54all right, it's not the twin Ruby surprise, all right, all right,
- 15:00you can't understand it, So now find a real one with me,
- 15:01mister murch something terrible has happened. But you're not kidding, Ramna. I
- 15:05hurry up and get that ring. I don't Joe, this is the only
- 15:09one I heard, ram I'm being patient. I made what I thought was
- 15:13a nice, fair offer. Maybe you think you could shake me down for
- 15:15a cut on a set of twin rupees. Well you can't. I don't
- 15:18know anything about it. I don't know where this thing came from. If
- 15:20you're trying to fool me, not, what are you going to do?
- 15:24Who had a chance to steal a ring of lead? That imitation? Nobody?
- 15:28Nobody touched it? Dad, You forget h dead man had that,
- 15:31mister krawl he looked it over. Oh, but he just had it in
- 15:35his hands for a few seconds, and right under our noses. I was
- 15:39practically burning holes into his hands with my eyes while he yill did He couldn't
- 15:43have switched it. What can we do? No? No. All I
- 15:45can say is you're in a spot, the thirty eight hundred dollars spot,
- 15:48and me you are set to make thousands of dollars. I'll make good to
- 15:52your company. I'll make good thirty eight hundred dollars. A little time that
- 15:56wouldn't be so good either. I'll tell you what. You can have my
- 16:02twin ruby for thirty five hundred. That way, the company wouldn't know what
- 16:06had happened. Sonya, Well, where are you going? Come back here?
- 16:08I will Dad. Later, I'm going out to see a man about
- 16:11a ring, A man named Mike Trent, and so the thief has to
- 16:26be mister Kroll. Nobody else ever had a chance to switch the ring for
- 16:29fake mister Trent. I see, tell me this, miss Rama was the
- 16:33imitation a good one, accurate but not too good. I realized something was
- 16:37wrong in the minute mister Marris opened the jewel case. It was a synthetic
- 16:41ruby, not cut quite like the real one. The setting was closed,
- 16:47though, I see. I don't suppose you know where to reach this mister
- 16:52Kroll. No, he said he was staying at a hotel. Is see,
- 16:56there wasn't any reason to check up on him until it got down to
- 16:59where we were actually going to make a sale. Do you think you can
- 17:04find a mister Trent. Dad's taking all this terribly hard. Well, I'll
- 17:10tell you what I'm I'm going to be pretty busy for a while, So
- 17:12why don't you look for him. I have my assistant, Patsy Ryan,
- 17:15help you. There's nothing to it. Really, You and Patsy check all
- 17:18the hotels and find out if they've had anyone by the name of Kroll registered
- 17:22lately. I'll be pretty busy, But you aren't going to look for him
- 17:25yourself. Oh don't worry, miss Ramin. I'll be working on your case
- 17:27now. The first thing I have to do is see Laurie Ireland Ireland.
- 17:30Who's he. Oh, he's a fellow who makes all my magic gimmicks.
- 17:33The gadgets are using my tricks. Tricks. Oh well, really, mister
- 17:38trimp, this is mighty serious to my father and myself me too. Believe
- 17:42me. I'm gonna have Laurie make me something to use in this case.
- 17:47Oh a trick gadget I can't imagine. Okay, okay, I'll tell you,
- 17:51but don't you tell anyone else. It's a third hand. Did you
- 17:56say? A third hand? That's exactly what I said, Miss Ramner,
- 18:00A third hand. And I'm not crazy. Oh but remember it, remember
- 18:03what? Don't tell anyone about it, not even your father. Hello,
- 18:17Mike speaking pats Hi, Look we found him, believe it or not,
- 18:21Miss crawl the gente. I mean he's staying at the Arlington Arms Hotel.
- 18:25Well that's great, Patsy. Now should I have him arrested run away?
- 18:27I should say, not, Patsy, but Michael, you might get away.
- 18:30Well I'll take my chances on that. How Look you and miss Rama
- 18:33go to a Dance jewelry store. Right now, I'll get the fake ring
- 18:37case and all. Tell mister Rama and the salesman. I want to examine
- 18:40it. I remember, Patsy, I want the whole business case and all.
- 18:42Goodbye. Oh Michael, thank haven you finally got here in the hotel,
- 19:00Miss Ramber and I have been scared to death a crow get away?
- 19:03Do you have the ring in the case? Yes, yes, here,
- 19:04he sures in. Oh, yes, we checked. He's in his room.
- 19:07Or like, Michael, do you have a gun with you? A
- 19:11gun? Now? Why would I want a gun? Because this chrow might
- 19:15be a desperate character, Patsy. If he isn't a crook, I won't
- 19:18need a gun, and if he is, I'll use my third hand.
- 19:19You're what nobody seems to believe me, I said, third hand? Michael?
- 19:23Really all right, never mind, come on, let's go up to
- 19:26this room. Michael, what are you gonna do? Well? That all
- 19:30depends Patsy. Come on, messenger from the Ramna Jewelry Store. I look,
- 19:47you two stay out here until I call it. All right? How
- 19:49are you want? I understand you're in the market for some high class jewelry.
- 19:55Nice room you have here? Mister Krohl, what's the meaning of this?
- 19:56You said that I'm a messenger from the jewelry store. I am.
- 20:00How about a nice Russian ruby ring? Oh that's I know. I talked
- 20:03to the girl and when I'm not interested, not even at a bargain.
- 20:07No, not even at a bargain. Well, that's it, it isn't
- 20:10it. A few days ago you were willing to consider paying five thousand dollars
- 20:11for a ring, and today you're not interested. The lady isn't interested.
- 20:15She doesn't care for rubies. Also, that's the story. That's not bad.
- 20:19But I think you'd better come along to the jewelry store with me.
- 20:22What come on, I don't think so, I'll guess again. Crawl,
- 20:26You've got a lot of nerve trying. I'm not trying anything, pl I'm
- 20:30doing it. I've never heard of such or No, did you ever hear
- 20:33of a twin Russian ruby ring mysteriously disappearing? Why? No, I don't
- 20:37know a thing about it. Now see here, Are you accusing me of
- 20:40stealing a ring? Patsy? Yes, Mike, did I accuse anybody of
- 20:44anything? I watched the idea there was this girl. Oh yes, I
- 20:48thought you'd remember me, mister Kroll. You were planning to hang something on
- 20:52me when I was in your store? Weren't you acting so nervous and suspicious?
- 20:56Better come along, crawl, I know, thanks, but now get
- 20:57out all of you. Look, I've tried to be nice about this crawl.
- 21:00Either you come with me, or I'll have to send for an officer.
- 21:03In the book you on suspicion you wouldn't or you'd be surprised what I
- 21:06dare. Either you come peaceably or will have a lot of trouble. Now,
- 21:08how about it. I believe you're serious. Oh, Michael is one
- 21:12of the most serious people you ever met. Thank you, Patty. How
- 21:17about it? Do I call the police and I'll go with you. You're
- 21:21going to regret this, believe me. There he is, mister Morris.
- 21:33That's the man. He's the one who's tould my ring. Hold him what
- 21:36I call it? Please? All right? All right, calm down,
- 21:37mister, now look here, I'll take it. Getting it won't help you
- 21:41any either. I'll keep calm And who are you? Mister? Who's this
- 21:44girl? I am Patsy Ryan, mister Trent's assistant, Miss Ramner, and
- 21:48I tracked down this mass for me. Oh, I'm a jewelry expert.
- 21:52Miss Ramner engaged to help praise a crook on this case. She brought me
- 21:56a ring to examine. I have it right here. Oh that not much
- 22:00to look at. It's a fake, a fake, I'm afraid not,
- 22:03mister Morris, I haven't here justice. Miss Ramna brought it to me,
- 22:06and I'd stake my professional reputation that her ruby is genuine, genuine synthetic ruby.
- 22:11Yes, the ring that's gone is a real ruby, one of the
- 22:12finest there is. It's what five thousand fuck mister Morris has the other real
- 22:15one. If you'll compare the too, mister Trent, you'll see the difference
- 22:18in the second. This man Crawl stole my ring. Careful, careful,
- 22:22right, I'll call me a thief. Will you now all nothing? I'll
- 22:26have you in jail before the days all? Were you right, mister Ramna.
- 22:29Let's be realistic about this. Can you prove that mister Crawl stole your
- 22:33rub it? Of course I can prove it. The real ring there,
- 22:37he handled it and then it was gone. What proof you need? Did
- 22:40you see him take it? No? Of course not, I say you
- 22:42haven't a shred of evidence. You can't make statements about people being thieves without
- 22:47some evidence to back it up. Looks like your stock, Romner. But
- 22:49you can still cut your loss by three hundred bucks by buying my ring and
- 22:52turning it into the company. Mister t should we buy mister Morris's ruby?
- 22:57How could I give advice on that? I have even seen his ring.
- 23:00I don't even know if it's as good as the one you already have.
- 23:03It's plenty good, all right. Just take a look at it, and
- 23:06then look at that piece of cheese and Ramna's box here. That's fair enough,
- 23:11hm, mister Ramner. I'd say, just offhand that the ring you
- 23:17already have is for a superior to this one. This ring of mariuses looks
- 23:21like a cheap paste imitation to me. That'll be funny, misster. Not
- 23:23give me that ring, certainly take it. I wouldn't have it as a
- 23:26gift. It's strictly a phonyous right, It is an imitation, just like
- 23:36the one I have. Oh good, Heaven, that leaves me worse off
- 23:40than now. I don't believe your own merchandise round them. My opinion is
- 23:42that your ring is the real thing here. Take a look for yourself,
- 23:47the twin Russian ruby, the real one. It is it. It wasn't
- 23:52a fake at all. Let me take a look at your hands. Away
- 23:53from that jewel case, Marris, and keep them away. I've got you
- 23:56covered, but there must be some mistake. You can't do this to me.
- 24:00You won't do a thing, and particularly you won't exercise that third hand
- 24:04anymore. I don't know what you're talking about. You do feel his right
- 24:07arm? Ram I know you don't not get away from me? Get away?
- 24:11There's something that take us? Coat off right a bit? Get that
- 24:17quote off Rama as fast as I can. Yes, shot, all right,
- 24:23you got nothing on me. You're gonna get that coat off if I
- 24:26have to rip it off. Crow, get me your hand here? Why
- 24:30that harness arrangement on his right arm? Michael? What is it? That?
- 24:34Patsy is a third hand commonly known as a sleeve holdout. It's a
- 24:40device used only by inferior magicians victors who don't have the ability to switch articles
- 24:45by a slight of hand. Lolorie Ireland thought I'd gone crazy when I ordered
- 24:48one. Today you ordered one, mister Trent, Oh, yes, I
- 24:51remember. Sure I'm wearing it too. I wanted to play maris own game
- 24:55with him. Then you knew all along that it was Mars. No,
- 24:57not all along. First glance, it seemed only one person had a chance
- 25:02to switch rings, and that was Krall. But even then Krall couldn't have
- 25:06been working alone. Well, I don't see why not or Patsy that duplicate
- 25:08ring. Whoever switched rings had to leave what the advertisers call a reasonable fact
- 25:14simile, and Krawl could only have done that by getting a fake ring from
- 25:18the source where you got the real one, or by working with that source.
- 25:22The wholesale jewelry house is a reputable firm, so if Krall were in
- 25:26on the swindle, he had to be in with Mars. Then I was
- 25:30right. Kroll's guilty too, and not at all. Mars was the only
- 25:33one who had a chance to have a duplicate made because he had the ring
- 25:37originally. I don't see how that story about the twin Russian ruby seemed a
- 25:41little on the weird side to me, so I asked myself where it first
- 25:45came from. Mister Morris told me about it when he left the consignment of
- 25:48ray reeds. That's right, But you see, there were never really two
- 25:52rings, just one. Mars planned all along to steal that ring from you
- 25:56wouldn't sell it back to you. But the kroll the how about? Well,
- 26:00you can't call a man a criminal because he wants to buy a ring
- 26:02for his girlfriend. After Patsy called, I checked his record. He's completely
- 26:04reputable and honest. My apologies, mister Krowle. I'm terribly sorry. That's
- 26:11all right, Ramna. But how did the real ruby get back into Ramna's
- 26:15jewel case? I was watching it. There was nothing to see here.
- 26:18I'll show you. We'll help me off with my code, would you thank
- 26:22you? How the fake ring was not in the jewel case at all when
- 26:26I came into the store. It was in this third hand hold on,
- 26:30hanging on this little clip. You see. I had no watch, I'll
- 26:34hold the good one in my fingers, so I pressed my elbow slightly against
- 26:38my side. Oh well, you wouldn't hear that noise if I had my
- 26:42coat on. But did you see it, Michael, That's amazing. That's
- 26:47the fastest thing I saw. The fake ring came into your hand and the
- 26:51real one went on to the clip. Right, But the real ring.
- 26:55I still don't see how you got it back into the jewel case. Well,
- 26:57once I got it from Marris after switching fake, all I had to
- 27:00do was squeeze the third hand and the good rink and into my palm.
- 27:03When I opened mister Ramner's jewel case, I put the real one in.
- 27:07Right, I'll be done. Say you know something, I've got a hunch
- 27:10that Ruby, the real one might be good luck for me. You mean
- 27:14you want to buy it? Katherine and I had a little quarrel a few
- 27:17days ago, and it wasn't true what I said about her not liking rubies.
- 27:19If she saw that ring and heard the story that she'd be very willing
- 27:22to make up again. Oh she what if she's human? You you mean
- 27:26you do want to buy it? Yes? I think I will, but
- 27:29I want to be sure to get the real one. Oh you'll you'll get
- 27:32the real one, all right. Marius isn't going to be in a position
- 27:34to make any more gem switches. You've got nothing on me, wise guy.
- 27:38I ain't stolen anything, and I haven't accepted any money. Yes,
- 27:41again, Thal you had the ring in your possession. The same law applies
- 27:45to you that takes care of a shoplift. Recovery of the merchandise doesn't cancel
- 27:49the crime. Oh of course you have one consolation. I'd like to know
- 27:55what, well where he's going, Patsy. He won't have to worry about
- 27:59making easy money. His expenses are going to be all paid for by the
- 28:03state. And now a last word from the ex magician turned rackets detective Mike
- 28:21Trent. Thank you. I hope you all enjoyed tonight's story. The sleeve
- 28:26holdout or third hand is a useful device. The shoplift is so beyond the
- 28:30lookout for it. Huh. Next week, I'm going to have a story
- 28:34about an amazing card game, a sociable blackjack game that turned out to be
- 28:41anything but sociable. I hope you'll be around to here at the same time,
- 28:45same station. Until then, this is Mike Trent signing off with the
- 28:48thought that people who go after easy money usually end up getting hard knocks.
- 28:52Remember there's no such thing as easy money. You have just heard another program
- 29:11in NBC's news series Easy Money, Transcribe to expose the inside secrets of Gambler's
- 29:17racketeers and conmen. Starred in the role of Mike Trent ex magician turned rackets
- 29:22detective is Larry Haynes also featured in tonight's cast where Joan Allison, Melbour,
- 29:26Ray, Greg Morton, and Roger D. Cobn. Be sure to listen
- 29:30for Easy Money again next week and Mike Trent gives you the lowdown on the
- 29:34Blackjack racket. Same time, same station. This is Bill McCord. Join
- 30:08your favorite couple, Sibam McGee and Molly tonight on the NBC Radio Network.
- 30:17Welcome back. Well, they did a great job making this come to life
- 30:22because in many things, wait, what Trent was showing was very much visual.
- 30:29But they did a good job and I like the style of the show.
- 30:32I'm a fan of a Racket Squad on television because it's an enjoyable series
- 30:38and very interesting. But Larry Haynes does such a good job of playing Mike
- 30:45Trent was such pizzazz. Really, it's just a joy to listen to.
- 30:51I'm sorry there's just aren't more episodes of this series, but any rate,
- 30:55we'll have another one for you next week, and of course tomorrow we have
- 30:59the Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, send your comments to Box
