- 0:00Hello. I did not sleep very well last night.
- 0:04But stuff still happened. So what's a didn't
- 0:08sleep great, gonna do my best, might have morning
- 0:10voice? I'll accept it. I hope you will too. Fungus.
- 0:15I hope you like fungus. This first story is about
- 0:18fungus. A lot of it. The whole world, actually.
- 0:21Scientists created a worldwide map of bio density
- 0:24of underground fungal networks. You with me?
- 0:29With myriad pop culture interpretations of this
- 0:31concept, you're probably already aware, but quick
- 0:33overview. Underground, in the underground, there's
- 0:37a bunch of fungus that creates basically like
- 0:40an internet for plants. Hyphal fungi, I think
- 0:44that's the correct term, it kind of just like
- 0:46grows through the ground and it finds a plant.
- 0:48It's like, hey yo, you wanna be friends? You
- 0:50wanna join my club? And then it creates a symbiotic
- 0:52relationship. This big network of fungus then
- 0:55becomes essentially like a sushi conveyor belt
- 0:57type thing for plants, but instead of sushi,
- 1:00it's like carbon and water. So it's critical
- 1:02to the well -being of a lot of ecosystems, but
- 1:04we don't know a whole lot about it. Now we've
- 1:07got a global map of the distribution of all of
- 1:11this fungi. Isn't that fun? Guy? How? Did that
- 1:16happen? Over the years, scientists like to get
- 1:18dirt... samples. A bunch of dirt scientists were
- 1:23like, I want dirt from a bunch of places, and
- 1:26over the years collected some 16 ,000 samples
- 1:29of dirt from all the places that you might find
- 1:31dirt, like the ground. They're basically like,
- 1:33we want to collect a bunch of samples to get
- 1:34information on what's going on in the soil in
- 1:37varying locations. 16 ,000 samples, actually
- 1:40more than that, were then thrown at a computer.
- 1:43Not the sam - not the dirt, they didn't - They
- 1:45didn't pour dirt over the computers, they analyzed
- 1:47the samples and used a machine learning algorithm
- 1:49to extrapolate a map of the global distribution
- 1:53of this fungus. By taking a bunch of samples
- 1:55and saying this sample was at this location,
- 1:57this sample was at this location, and doing that
- 1:59enough times, the computer can extrapolate, with
- 2:01varying degrees of confidence, what that map
- 2:04would be. So while they didn't go underground
- 2:06and, like, take a measuring tape and measure
- 2:08out each individual piece of fungus, it is estimated
- 2:11that the total length of all of these fungal
- 2:14tubes underground is longer than a billion times
- 2:17the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Said
- 2:20another way, a little more than two football
- 2:22fields. So as we move forward and try not to
- 2:25die on this planet, a really good way to do that...
- 2:27is to learn more about these fungal networks
- 2:29and work with them to ensure that our ecosystems
- 2:32are not going to fall apart. Yay science, yay
- 2:34conservation. Boo this next story. Another civilian
- 2:38has been gunned down by ICE agents, resulting
- 2:41in his death after a traffic stop, this time
- 2:44in Houston. Lorenzo Salgado Arajo is dead because
- 2:47of the Trump administration and the people who
- 2:49voted them into power, thinking this was all
- 2:51just a meme. He had been living in this country
- 2:53for more than 30 years, raising a family, being
- 2:56a job creator. He was actively a contributing
- 2:59member of society. At 6 .50am, he was on his
- 3:02way to work, carpooling with co -workers, when
- 3:05ICE agents accosted him in unmarked SUVs. They
- 3:08called it a targeted enforcement operation. That
- 3:10was 6 .50. At 6 .51, emergency services were
- 3:14dispatched because Lorenzo was bleeding out.
- 3:16He was shot in the gut, bled out, and died, and
- 3:19the ICE agents claim that the reason they did
- 3:21that was because they were fearing for their
- 3:23life because he was gonna ram them with his car.
- 3:26Where have I heard that before? This is an established
- 3:30pattern. ICE kills someone, withholds as much
- 3:33footage as they possibly can, asserts that what
- 3:36happened was they were in mortal danger, and
- 3:38then we find out that's nowhere near the case.
- 3:41They have long since lost any benefit of the
- 3:44doubt. And honestly, instead of dwelling on the
- 3:47death of this man more than I need to, I want
- 3:50to highlight what his son said about this situation.
- 3:53And I will warn that this is heartbreaking. I
- 3:55understand if you want to skip forward. Speaking
- 3:57of his father, he said, will no longer spend
- 4:14an evening on that porch. He did not deserve
- 4:17to die. He did not deserve to be reduced to a
- 4:20headline of Mexican man shot and killed by ICE.
- 4:25The only acceptable next step for ICE is the
- 4:28complete dissolution of the agency, probably
- 4:30all of DHS itself, prosecution, convictions,
- 4:34and policy to ensure this never happens again.
- 4:37Not gonna hold my breath, but anything less than
- 4:39that is absurd. Alright, let's switch it up a
- 4:41bit. Let's talk about Xbox, or the lack thereof.
- 4:45The gaming industry is going through it right
- 4:47now. There have been a ton of layoffs, most recently
- 4:50from Microsoft and Xbox. In a memo this week,
- 4:53recently -anointed CEO Asha Sharma basically
- 4:55said, hey, y 'all, we're not doing great, and
- 4:58we're going to lay off 3 ,200 people. This is
- 5:00part of a larger 4 ,800 -person layoff from Microsoft
- 5:03as a whole. Let's not forget they've laid off
- 5:06over 10 ,000 developers in the past few years.
- 5:09and the industry at large has just been laying
- 5:11off just for funsies. It's just a fun little
- 5:13hobby, I guess. These cuts are massive and affect
- 5:15a lot of studios. If you're not particularly
- 5:17familiar with the corporate structure of Xbox,
- 5:19what they tend to do is buy studios to bring
- 5:22them in -house and basically just gather up IPs.
- 5:25And so they've gathered a pretty big list of
- 5:28big -name studios, and a lot of those studios
- 5:31are taking giant hits. Several of those studios
- 5:34are spinning out entirely, and one of those studios'
- 5:37fate is entirely unknown right now. Here's a
- 5:39quick rundown of studios that will be affected
- 5:40by this. Double Fine Productions. They're known
- 5:43for Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. They are going
- 5:46to return to independent management. They're
- 5:48gonna get a bit of money from Microsoft to make
- 5:50sure they've got a soft landing. Pretty much
- 5:52the same goes for Compulsion Games. They're known
- 5:54for We Happy Few and South of Midnight. They're
- 5:57also spinning out, also going back to independent.
- 5:59Ninja Theory. They make Kung Fu Chaos and Heavenly
- 6:02Sword. They've been sold to a new owner that's
- 6:05currently undisclosed. Undead Labs, they make
- 6:08the State of Decay franchise, they have also
- 6:10been sold to a new owner, and the one that we
- 6:12don't fully know about is Arcane. They've got
- 6:14a studio in Lyon, France, and currently, their
- 6:18fate is unknown because France actually has labor
- 6:20laws. That studio is known for Dishonored and
- 6:23Deathloop, and essentially, Microsoft's been
- 6:25trying to shut them down, and they've already
- 6:27shut down another office of the same studio from
- 6:29Texas, but now they're trying to say, hey, close
- 6:31that one, too. To which a French workers' rights
- 6:34review board has to actually go over that. and
- 6:37tell them if that's legal. So we don't know what's
- 6:38going to happen there, but wow. Workers having
- 6:41actual protections against just being laid off
- 6:44immediately. Weird and interesting. I also just
- 6:48real quick want to say, this is post -recording,
- 6:51I forgot to mention that Bethesda Studios, Zenimax,
- 6:55id Software, Obsidian, and Activision have also
- 6:58all taken quite a few hits. We don't know the
- 7:00full scope or what's exactly gonna happen to
- 7:03all of them, but most of the ones I just listed
- 7:05are gonna stay with Microsoft, but they're taking
- 7:08big hits. Microsoft has made a bunch of money
- 7:10recently. They are not struggling, and these
- 7:12layoffs are pretty fucking cynical, because it's
- 7:14just to make more short -term numbers look good.
- 7:17Granted, Xbox is not the reason that they are
- 7:19currently very profitable, but it's not like
- 7:21they can't absorb these headwinds. They don't
- 7:23want to absorb these headwinds, they want to
- 7:24instead be like, look! We've cut a bunch of employees.
- 7:28And don't worry about it. Just keep investing.
- 7:30Look how efficient we are. AI. And in fact, Microsoft
- 7:33Game Pass seems to be a pretty big flashpoint
- 7:35for all of this. It doesn't make money. In fact,
- 7:38it undermines the sales of most of the games
- 7:40that are on it. The most recent Call of Duty
- 7:41that was on Game Pass saw an 80 % drop in actual
- 7:45premium sales of the game. They don't like that.
- 7:48Much. So they're gonna start messing with that
- 7:50as well, making certain titles be delayed before
- 7:53they actually go on to Game Pass, so that people
- 7:54actually spend the money on them. Here's a quote
- 7:57from Sharma about that. Quote, But she is a former
- 8:15meta executive, and then also Microsoft's head
- 8:18of product of core AI stuff. She's not... It's
- 8:22not like this is gamer time, you know? It's still
- 8:24an executive. And executives have one job. Make
- 8:27money for shareholders. Their job is not to produce
- 8:30jobs for other people. Their job is to produce
- 8:33value. Hey, you! Yeah, you, the one listening
- 8:36to this podcast. Thank you for being here. I
- 8:38appreciate your ears. They're very, uh, audible.
- 8:43If you want to help me keep doing this, it would
- 8:46go a long way. If you want to check out my Patreon,
- 8:48patreon .com slash Endeavorance. You can chip
- 8:50in, help keep this show independent, help keep
- 8:52me not doing obnoxious spots for like underwear
- 8:55or something. That's all. Thanks again. Moving
- 8:58on. Meanwhile, in Gaza, Hamas is doing something
- 9:03interesting. Hamas has announced that they're
- 9:05going to dissolve the governing arm of their
- 9:07group to allow for the NCAG to come in and take
- 9:10over. The NCAG is the National Committee for
- 9:13Administrating Gaza. It's a U .S. and U .N.-backed
- 9:16group. It consists of 15 civilian governance
- 9:19experts that are all Palestinian. They are, again,
- 9:21backed by the U .N. and the U .S. as a part of
- 9:24the proposed ceasefire deal brokered by the U
- 9:27.S. that Israel's been completely ignoring. As
- 9:29a reminder, Israel still occupies 60 % of Gaza,
- 9:33and they've killed over a thousand Palestinians
- 9:35since the ceasefire, wounding thousands more
- 9:38in, like, artillery strikes. It's not at all
- 9:42a ceasefire. The NCAG has been ready to come
- 9:45in and take over for a while, but Israel has
- 9:47actually prevented them from going in, citing
- 9:49that the situation is too dangerous, and that
- 9:52Hamas has to completely disappear and disarm
- 9:55and just go away before anything can actually
- 9:57happen. Hamas is saying they're going to dissolve
- 10:00their governing body, but they're not going to
- 10:02disarm. They're going to remain a security force.
- 10:04So essentially, it's an attempt at a bluff call,
- 10:07right? Like Israel is saying, we can't go to
- 10:09the next step of the ceasefire because Hamas
- 10:11isn't going to let go of governance. And so Hamas
- 10:13is saying, we'll let go of governance and let
- 10:14them in. Now the ball is in your court. I don't
- 10:17think this really changes all that much. The
- 10:19NCIG has acknowledged it, but they're not going
- 10:21to actually go in yet. But any movement towards.
- 10:26Not the current situation is genuinely a good
- 10:30movement. The outlook of the NCAG is shaky for
- 10:33sure, but it's just as shaky as any other prospect
- 10:37right now. And it's less shaky than being constantly
- 10:40bombed. As a reminder, as for like why Hamas
- 10:42is a governing body, Hamas did win an election
- 10:45to govern Gaza. In 2006, they have retained that
- 10:49position since then. And I would remind you that
- 10:52the average age of Palestinians in Gaza is under
- 10:5618. So 20 years ago Hamas won an election and
- 10:59now most of the people alive there were not even
- 11:02born then. So there's that. We're back on our
- 11:05shit. Again. We're bombing Iran again. Because
- 11:09Trump got bored again and is saying that we're
- 11:11gonna stop the ceasefire now and bomb them again.
- 11:14Again. I don't know what to say about this because
- 11:17like I don't want to crack jokes because we are
- 11:20just bombing the fuck out of people because of
- 11:22an idiot. But like what he said was that I think
- 11:26it's over for me like that that is what the man
- 11:29said with regards to Trying to broker peace.
- 11:33He was at a NATO summit and he was like, yeah,
- 11:35it's it's over We're gonna start bombing them
- 11:36again, and then we started bombing them again
- 11:38And now here we are that the argument that they
- 11:41used for starting the bombing campaign again
- 11:43Is that there were some skirmishes in the Strait
- 11:46of Hormuz with boats being shot at? We really
- 11:49don't have a lot of information about all this
- 11:50in the fog of war that could be anything I am
- 11:53very hesitant to take anything that this administration
- 11:56says at face value especially regarding this
- 11:59absolute catastrophe of a war. So Iran has already
- 12:02retaliated since then and we're just we're just
- 12:04back at it. We're just back at it. I will say
- 12:08usually our weekly reminder that we're gonna
- 12:09go back to war now happens after markets close
- 12:12on Fridays. Instead it happened in the middle
- 12:15of the week and we saw the reaction pretty much
- 12:17immediately. Stocks go down, oil go up. That's
- 12:23what happened. I basically see NBC. Anyway, one
- 12:27day Donald Trump's gonna shit his pants and die.
- 12:31Lightning round. A man from Alabama died from
- 12:34a heart attack while trying to hide the body
- 12:36of his girlfriend who he had recently murdered.
- 12:39So far the FBI has seized at least 600 drones
- 12:42as people are trying to fly drones over World
- 12:45Cup games. To be clear, these are like consumer
- 12:47drones, like cameras, not military drones. David
- 12:51Hearn, a three -time U .S. Olympian, has been
- 12:54indicted in Washington, D .C. for allegedly vandalizing
- 12:58the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. That is
- 13:01where we are as a country. I apologize for my
- 13:04endless supply of jade today. Sony has announced
- 13:07that PlayStation games will no longer have a
- 13:09physical version starting in 2028. The reaction
- 13:12has not been positive. At time of writing, we
- 13:14genuinely do not know whether or not U .S. Senator
- 13:17Mitch McConnell is dead. And finally, for today,
- 13:20someone who's not dead, a toddler in Arizona
- 13:23was thought to have drowned and then was found
- 13:25hours later alive in the morgue. Zombaby. Thank
- 13:29you so much for listening to today's episode
- 13:30of Stuff Keeps Happening. Head to SKH .News for
- 13:33sources, bonus content, and your very own flotation
