- 0:00Speaker 1: Racketeer Joe Gordon has disappeared, and Lamont Cranston traces the
- 0:04Speaker 1: matter to Grant Flynn, a civic leader whose public standing
- 0:08Speaker 1: conceals criminal ties. It brings us to The Shadow, Dead
- 0:13Speaker 1: Men Talk, episode 166. First heard over the Mutual Broadcasting
- 0:19Speaker 1: System on September 24th, 1939, Bill Johnstone stars as Lamont
- 0:25Speaker 1: Cranston with Ken Roberts at the microphone in a script
- 0:29Speaker 1: by Jerry Devine. When Flynn's reported death sends Cranston and
- 0:34Speaker 1: Margo Lane to a funeral home, the inquiry moves through
- 0:38Speaker 1: the morgue and toward an underground river tunnel. Blue Coal
- 0:43Speaker 1: brought this weekly adventure to mutual listeners. And now, we
- 0:47Speaker 1: return to the original broadcast.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
- 0:55Speaker 2: The Shadow knows.
- 1:29Speaker 3: In just a moment, the Shadow starts his first adventure
- 1:31Speaker 3: of the new season. But first, let me tell you
- 1:33Speaker 3: about this master of men's minds. The Shadow, mysterious character
- 1:37Speaker 3: who furthers the forces of law and order, is in
- 1:40Speaker 3: reality Lamont Cranston, wealthy young man about town. Cranston devotes
- 1:44Speaker 3: his spare time to his favorite hobby, criminology. As the Shadow,
- 1:48Speaker 3: he is the sworn enemy of criminals, lawbreakers, and shopsters.
- 1:53Speaker 3: An invaluable help to the Shadow is his hypnotic power,
- 1:56Speaker 3: by which he clouds men's minds so that they cannot
- 1:59Speaker 3: see him. This he accomplishes by means of a mystic
- 2:01Speaker 3: trick acquired during the years he spent in the Orient.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Cranston's friend and companion, the lovely Margot Lane, is the
- 2:08Speaker 3: only person who knows to whom the unseen voice of
- 2:11Speaker 3: the Shadow belongs. Today's story, Dead Men Talk.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Dead Men Talk.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Lamont. Lamont.
- 2:25Speaker 4: What?
- 2:26Speaker 5: Look, darling, there's something I think you ought to know.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Yes, what is it?
- 2:29Speaker 5: Promise you won't tell anyone?
- 2:31Speaker 4: Of course, Margo, of course.
- 2:32Speaker 5: You just went through another red light.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Oh, sorry.
- 2:35Speaker 5: You know, there's nothing duller or harder to be with
- 2:38Speaker 5: than a crime detector when there's no crime to detect.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Well, if you'd rather not be with me, I....
- 2:45Speaker 5: Last time I heard that line was from a boy
- 2:47Speaker 5: who escorted me to a high school prom.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Now, Margo.
- 2:50Speaker 5: I should think you'd be happy that our fair city
- 2:52Speaker 5: has no murders and no robberies, no corruption at the moment.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Well, I am.
- 2:56Speaker 5: Of course, if you really want a victim, why don't
- 2:58Speaker 5: you track down the villain who put the tax on cigarettes?
- 3:01Speaker 4: Listen, my sweet. You can go to your psychology teacher
- 3:04Speaker 4: and get your money back because you haven't helped my
- 3:07Speaker 4: mood one bit.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Okay, then. Go ahead and sulk. Would you mind telling
- 3:13Speaker 5: me where we're headed for?
- 3:15Speaker 4: The morgue.
- 3:15Speaker 5: You mean the.
- 3:16Speaker 4: I mean the morgue.
- 3:18Speaker 5: I see.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Of course, if you'd rather not come with me.
- 3:20Speaker 5: No, no. In fact, after spending this day with you,
- 3:23Speaker 5: the morgue will be a pleasant relief.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Well, well, glad to see you, Mr. Cranston. How are you, Mr.
- 3:37Speaker 6: Tuttle?
- 3:38Speaker 4: I'd like you to meet Miss Lane. Well, glad to
- 3:40Speaker 4: meet you, Miss Lane.
- 3:41Speaker 5: How do you do?
- 3:42Speaker 4: Mr. Tuttle is our very efficient keeper of the morgue.
- 3:44Speaker 5: I see.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Yes, Miss Lane.
- 3:47Speaker 6: And we're open for business here 24 hours a day.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Anybody in particular you were looking for, Mr.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Cranston? No, no, just driving by, and I thought I'd
- 3:57Speaker 4: drop in and see what was going on.
- 3:58Speaker 6: Well, business is very slow right now. Very slack. But
- 4:03Speaker 6: I suppose that's true of every business. But we did
- 4:06Speaker 6: have a new one today, an old derelict, died of
- 4:08Speaker 6: pneumonia exposure, I guess. There he is over there.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Oh, yes. Poor chap.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Rather nice-looking old boy, isn't he?
- 4:16Speaker 4: Is he the only new one? Yes, up to now.
- 4:19Speaker 4: But stick around.
- 4:23Speaker 6: You know the old saying, you never know what's going
- 4:25Speaker 6: to turn up, eh, Miss Lane?
- 4:27Speaker 4: Yes.
- 4:30Speaker 5: Come on, let's get out of here.
- 4:39Speaker 4: That tunnel's an interesting type, don't you think?
- 4:42Speaker 5: Yes. Yes, very. A jolly sort.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Margo, I'll park here. Will you tell him we want
- 4:48Speaker 4: the evening news, please? Yes, surely.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Boys.
- 4:51Speaker 7: Yes, miss?
- 4:52Speaker 5: Evening news, please.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Here you are. Evening news it is.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 4:56Speaker 4: What do the headlines say?
- 4:59Speaker 5: Well, the steamship Bremen has been seen in Chicago wearing
- 5:02Speaker 5: a long white beard.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Very funny. Very funny. What about local news?
- 5:07Speaker 5: Well, let's see. Football team starting... Movie hero goes on.
- 5:14Speaker 4: No.
- 5:15Speaker 5: No, nothing new.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Oh, why doesn't something happen? Good evening, Miss Lane. Mr. Cranston.
- 5:21Speaker 4: How are you, Mr. Harvey? Hello, Harvey. Say, how are
- 5:25Speaker 4: things at the bank? Oh, just fine, thank you. Had
- 5:27Speaker 4: any good robberies lately? No, we've been... What? Skip it,
- 5:31Speaker 4: skip it. So long, Harvey. Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 4: I feel like Sherlock Holmes must have felt when Conan
- 5:41Speaker 4: Doyle stopped writing him.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Where to now?
- 5:44Speaker 4: We're going to dinner. Oh, no. Why not?
- 5:47Speaker 5: Well, you're not going to give up so soon, Lamont.
- 5:49Speaker 5: You know, we can still chase ambulances.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Oh.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Margo, may I see that newspaper, please?
- 6:02Speaker 5: Now, you finish your salad first, Lamont.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Okay, darling. Whatever you say.
- 6:07Speaker 5: You've gotten yourself an idea, haven't you?
- 6:09Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 6:09Speaker 5: What is it?
- 6:10Speaker 4: Well, I've just been thinking. You know the old saying
- 6:14Speaker 4: that if there's no news, then make news? Yes. Well,
- 6:18Speaker 4: how about a rewrite on that? If there's no crime.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Then make crime?
- 6:22Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Just a minute. You're not going out and commit a murder.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Hardly. I have a different approach.
- 6:29Speaker 8: What?
- 6:30Speaker 4: Our well-knowing civic leader, Mr. Grant Flynn. Oh. Mr. Flynn,
- 6:35Speaker 4: the poor man's friend, benefactor of little kiddies. And the
- 6:38Speaker 4: worst murdering thief this community has ever known.
- 6:41Speaker 5: But, Lamont, they've been trying for years to hang something
- 6:43Speaker 5: on Flynn.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Granted. But just look at this newspaper. See this story here.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Whereabouts of John Gordon, racket king, still a mystery. But
- 6:52Speaker 5: what's that got to do with Flynn?
- 6:54Speaker 4: John Gordon was Flynn's partner. Oh, not publicly, of course.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Gordon did the dirty work. He ran the rackets, collected
- 7:01Speaker 4: the extortion money from poor shopkeepers, and, when necessary, committed
- 7:06Speaker 4: the murders.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Well, what's happened to Gordon?
- 7:08Speaker 4: About three weeks ago, he disappeared. Boom. Just like that.
- 7:14Speaker 4: And nothing's been heard of him since.
- 7:15Speaker 5: Well, do you think that Flynn had something to do
- 7:17Speaker 5: with his disappearance?
- 7:18Speaker 4: Definitely. Gordon was becoming too dangerous to Flynn's interests. Their
- 7:23Speaker 4: names were being linked together. And Gordon was trying to
- 7:25Speaker 4: cut in on Flynn's political interests. And probably threatened him.
- 7:30Speaker 5: And you think that Flynn had Gordon murdered?
- 7:33Speaker 4: Well, I'm not so sure of that. The murdered part,
- 7:35Speaker 4: I mean. What I do think is that Flynn ordered
- 7:39Speaker 4: him done away with. And now he's not so sure
- 7:42Speaker 4: that his orders were carried out.
- 7:44Speaker 5: But why?
- 7:45Speaker 4: Because among those heading the investigation as to Gordon's whereabouts...
- 7:50Speaker 4: Is his erstwhile partner the same Mr. Flynn? Oh.
- 7:54Speaker 5: And just what are you planning to do about all this?
- 7:57Speaker 4: Well, if Mr. Flynn were to receive a phone call
- 8:00Speaker 4: telling him that Gordon was still alive, we might stir
- 8:03Speaker 4: up some interesting developments.
- 8:05Speaker 5: I see.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Particularly if he were to receive this phone call from
- 8:10Speaker 4: the shadow. Come in. Well, what do you want? Phone
- 8:23Speaker 4: call for you, Mr. Flynn. Well, who is it? He
- 8:25Speaker 4: wouldn't give no name. You know I don't talk to
- 8:27Speaker 4: people unless... Says he's got a message for you. Oh, yes? Yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 4: from Johnny Gordon. What? Should I tell him your name? No, no, no. No,
- 8:35Speaker 4: I'll take it. Now, you wait in here. Whatever you say, boss.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Whatever you say. Hello.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Hello.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Hello, Mr. Grant Flynn. Yes? This is the shadow. The Shadow.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I've heard of you. Thank you, Mr. Flynn. I have
- 8:56Speaker 4: a message for you that might be of some importance.
- 8:58Speaker 6: Oh, yes?
- 8:59Speaker 4: A message from John Gordon. What do you mean from Gordon?
- 9:02Speaker 4: Gordon is coming to get you. Gordon's dead.
- 9:04Speaker 7: How do you know?
- 9:05Speaker 4: Because I ordered him rubbed out. That's all I wanted
- 9:07Speaker 4: to know, Mr. Flynn. No, I didn't mean that. Do
- 9:08Speaker 4: you hear me? I didn't mean that. Perhaps you can
- 9:10Speaker 4: explain yourself more clearly in the morning at the district
- 9:12Speaker 4: attorney's office. If Gordon doesn't get you first. Now, wait
- 9:15Speaker 4: a minute. Wait. Good night, Mr. Flynn. Good morning, Margo.
- 9:24Speaker 5: Lamont, have you seen the newspapers?
- 9:26Speaker 4: No.
- 9:27Speaker 5: Well, look at this. Civic bleeder dies suddenly. Grant Flynn,
- 9:31Speaker 5: pneumonia victim.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Pneumonia?
- 9:33Speaker 5: Expired at 9 p.m. last night at his home.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Hey, now, wait a minute. I spoke to Flynn at 8.45.
- 9:41Speaker 4: That means he contracted pneumonia, reached a crisis, and died
- 9:44Speaker 4: in 15 minutes flat.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Remarkable age we're living in, isn't it?
- 9:48Speaker 4: Yes, to say the least. To say the least, there's
- 9:51Speaker 4: something very phony about the whole thing. Let me see
- 9:54Speaker 4: that paper. Here you are.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 4: At his family's request, the funeral services will be strictly private.
- 10:02Speaker 4: The body will be removed to Conrad's undertaking parlors this evening. Well,
- 10:08Speaker 4: you can be certain of one thing, Margo.
- 10:09Speaker 5: What's that?
- 10:10Speaker 4: The services won't be strictly private. Because we're paying our
- 10:14Speaker 4: respects to the late Mr. Flynn at the funeral parlor
- 10:17Speaker 4: ourselves tonight.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Lamont.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Shh. Not so loud, Margo.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Is this better?
- 10:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 5: If I'm not too curious, why are we prowling up
- 10:32Speaker 5: this back alley?
- 10:33Speaker 4: This is the rear of the funeral parlor. And as
- 10:36Speaker 4: we aren't among the invited mourners, I thought this was
- 10:39Speaker 4: the best way in. Do you mind?
- 10:41Speaker 5: No, it's fun. Haven't done this since Prohibition.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Well, here's the door. Now we'll see if I have
- 10:49Speaker 4: a key to fit it.
- 10:51Speaker 5: What the well-dressed burglar will wear. How are you fixed
- 10:54Speaker 5: for brass knuckles?
- 10:55Speaker 4: Margo, could you stop being a bright girl for just
- 10:58Speaker 4: a minute, please? All right. Thanks. Now, I'll try this one. No,
- 11:05Speaker 4: this one. Ah, there we are. Come on. Quiet now.
- 11:13Speaker 4: All right. Give me that flashlight.
- 11:15Speaker 5: Here you are.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 11:18Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Well, this seems to be the storeroom for the coffins.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Yes, I gather that from the way they're stacked up
- 11:25Speaker 5: around here.
- 11:26Speaker 4: You're not nervous, are you?
- 11:28Speaker 5: No, no. I was just wishing we were back in
- 11:31Speaker 5: that jolly old morgue.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Come on. Let's try this door over here. Stay close
- 11:37Speaker 4: to me.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Don't worry about that.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Ah, this must be the funeral room. Now to find Mr. Flynn.
- 11:48Speaker 4: What's the matter?
- 11:48Speaker 5: Over there in the corner, something's moving.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Where? There. That's a curtain blowing. Stop being so nervous.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Nothing can possibly... What was that?
- 12:01Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Someone's coming down the stairs. Quick, duck behind this coffin.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Hurry, let's get out of here.
- 12:12Speaker 8: There is really no need of hiding. Come out from
- 12:17Speaker 8: behind that coffin Why, yes, thank you That's better We're
- 12:27Speaker 8: very close friends of Mr. Flynn's And.
- 12:30Speaker 4: I know it may seem very unusual to you Our
- 12:32Speaker 4: being here at this hour, but... It was the late Mr.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Flynn you want to see Yes Follow.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Me Stay beside me, Lamont All right.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Sorry I haven't time to show you all around You'd
- 12:48Speaker 4: like it here.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Yes, I'm sure we would.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Mr. Flynn, wasn't it? Yes.
- 12:56Speaker 8: I haven't gotten to know him very well yet. He's
- 12:59Speaker 8: new here. Ah, here he is. Now, would you help
- 13:05Speaker 8: me with this coffin lid?
- 13:07Speaker 4: Surely. There he is. Ah, the peace.
- 13:15Speaker 5: The peace they find.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Are you sure this is Mr. Grant Flynn? Yes.
- 13:20Speaker 8: See the engraving on the coffin? His family just left
- 13:24Speaker 8: here a short time ago.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Thank you. Come on, Margot. Leaving so soon? Yes, good night.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Hope you weren't frightened.
- 13:30Speaker 5: What's the matter, Lamont?
- 13:31Speaker 4: That body. That body in the coffin.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:33Speaker 4: That isn't Grant Flynn. No?
- 13:34Speaker 6: No.
- 13:35Speaker 4: It's the body of that poor old derelict we saw
- 13:37Speaker 4: yesterday in the morgue.
- 13:38Speaker 2: The End.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Would you mind telling me, Lamont, where we're going now?
- 14:03Speaker 4: To the morgue, Margo.
- 14:05Speaker 5: The morgue again?
- 14:06Speaker 4: Yes.
- 14:07Speaker 5: You know, Lamont, life with you these past two days
- 14:09Speaker 5: has certainly been a merry whirl. First the morgue, then
- 14:13Speaker 5: an undertaking parlor, then the morgue again.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Well, we found out one thing. Flynn is definitely still alive.
- 14:19Speaker 4: But where he is and why he so desperately pretended
- 14:22Speaker 4: to be dead is something we've got to unravel.
- 14:24Speaker 5: Well, what do you think you'll learn at the morgue?
- 14:27Speaker 4: I want to find out who removed the body of
- 14:29Speaker 4: the old derelict.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Do you think they'll tell you?
- 14:32Speaker 4: Not me, Margo. But they will tell the Shadow.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Oh, what a long night.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Mr.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Tuttle. Did someone speak to me? I did, Mr. Tuttle.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Who are you? Where are you? Men call me the Shadow.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Now quit joking. Who is it? I can't see you.
- 14:58Speaker 4: I'm not joking, Mr.
- 14:59Speaker 5: Tuttle.
- 15:00Speaker 4: And you can't see me because I cloud men's minds
- 15:04Speaker 4: by the power of hypnosis. Now look, this morgue is
- 15:07Speaker 4: a scary enough place at night, so cut it out,
- 15:08Speaker 4: will you? Let me assure you that I am not
- 15:11Speaker 4: here to frighten anyone, Mr. Tuttle. Unless, of course, you
- 15:14Speaker 4: fail to give me the information I desire. Well, what's that?
- 15:18Speaker 4: Who took that old man's body out of here? Old man? Why, I...
- 15:22Speaker 4: You're stalling, Tuttle. I haven't much time to waste with you.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Answer my question. No, I don't know nothing about it.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Flynn can't protect you now, Tuttle. Flynn? Yes, Flynn. He
- 15:30Speaker 4: claimed that body, didn't he? Oh, why, I... Didn't he? Yes, yes.
- 15:33Speaker 4: But I was just obeying orders. Honest, I was. Now,
- 15:35Speaker 4: Flynn got me this job. That's all I wanted to know. Oh,
- 15:37Speaker 4: you won't tell her I squealed, will you? No, Tuttle.
- 15:40Speaker 4: But I'd stand by tonight if I were you. You
- 15:43Speaker 4: may be sent another body in exchange. What do you mean?
- 15:47Speaker 4: I mean the body of your erstwhile boss, Mr. Flynn.
- 15:58Speaker 5: You didn't read this evening's paper, did you, Lamont?
- 16:00Speaker 4: No. Why, Margo?
- 16:01Speaker 5: Well, here's an item that might interest you. Sometime last night,
- 16:05Speaker 5: the private vault of the late Grant Flynn in the
- 16:07Speaker 5: First Security Bank was rifled and the entire contents removed.
- 16:11Speaker 4: I might have known it. Remember that chap Harvey I
- 16:14Speaker 4: spoke to last night when we bought the paper? Yes.
- 16:16Speaker 4: He's been a trusted Flynn employee for years. Although he
- 16:20Speaker 4: works for the First National Bank, he undoubtedly did the rifling.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Oh, the plot thickens, huh?
- 16:26Speaker 4: Sleepy?
- 16:28Speaker 5: Not exactly bright at 2.30 in the morning. Oh, remember
- 16:32Speaker 5: those good old days when nothing was happening?
- 16:34Speaker 4: Yes, remotely.
- 16:36Speaker 5: What's up now, Chief? Another fire?
- 16:38Speaker 4: I can take you home if you want.
- 16:39Speaker 5: Not a chance. Where to now?
- 16:42Speaker 4: A visit to Mr. Harvey.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Harvey?
- 16:44Speaker 4: Yes, the chap at the bank. If we were to
- 16:47Speaker 4: find out where he delivered the contents of the vault,
- 16:50Speaker 4: it might lead us to Flynn. Wake up, Harvey. I
- 17:01Speaker 4: said wake up. What? I want to talk to you, Harvey.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Who's speaking to me? Where are you? Right beside you.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Here in the shadows. I'll put on a light. There's
- 17:17Speaker 4: no one here. I must have been dreaming. You weren't dreaming, Harvey. But...
- 17:22Speaker 4: Don't try to look for me. You won't see me.
- 17:25Speaker 4: But I'm still right beside you. See? Wait. It must
- 17:31Speaker 4: be a shadow. A man nobody can see. That's right.
- 17:35Speaker 4: What do you want to be?
- 17:37Speaker 7: Harvey.
- 17:38Speaker 4: Why did you break into Grant Flynn's vault? Me?
- 17:41Speaker 6: Why?
- 17:41Speaker 4: And where did you deliver the contents of that vault? Please,
- 17:44Speaker 4: you've made a dreadful mistake. Answer my questions, Harvey. I can't.
- 17:47Speaker 4: I can't tell you anything. You're a fool, Harvey. Do
- 17:50Speaker 4: you know that your knowledge that Grant Flynn is still
- 17:52Speaker 4: alive is your own death warrant?
- 17:53Speaker 5: No.
- 17:54Speaker 4: That body they took from the morgue and placed in
- 17:56Speaker 4: Flynn's coffin, they'll have to replace that body. Did you
- 18:00Speaker 4: know that, Harvey? And do you know whose body they'll
- 18:02Speaker 4: use as a substitute? Yours, Harvey. Yours. All right, I'll talk.
- 18:12Speaker 4: But you've got to protect me. You can't let them
- 18:13Speaker 4: kill me. I promise you that. Now, where is Flynn?
- 18:18Speaker 4: I delivered the papers to him at his own warehouse
- 18:20Speaker 4: down on the riverfront. I think he's planning to make
- 18:23Speaker 4: a getaway sometime tonight. There's the warehouse right ahead of us.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Cheerful looking place. Lamont, what's that boarded structure beside it?
- 18:38Speaker 4: That, my dear, is what is affectionately known to the
- 18:40Speaker 4: taxpayers of our community as Flynn's Folly.
- 18:43Speaker 5: Flynn's Folly. Seems to me I vaguely recall that name.
- 18:47Speaker 4: It's the title that was bestowed on the vehicular tunnel
- 18:50Speaker 4: that was built under the river by Flynn with public
- 18:52Speaker 4: funds and then never used.
- 18:56Speaker 5: Must have made something on that little deal.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Millions. I think it best that we leave the car here, Margo.
- 19:05Speaker 4: We'll look for a door in the rear of the building.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Come on.
- 19:07Speaker 5: Okay, Chief. I never liked this neighborhood, even in the daytime.
- 19:12Speaker 4: There's no one about at this hour. Now, if we
- 19:14Speaker 4: can only find... Ah, here's the door. Now to get.
- 19:18Speaker 5: I know, those keys again.
- 19:20Speaker 4: These keys are very precious, my sweet.
- 19:22Speaker 5: I realize that. But wouldn't it be fun to just
- 19:25Speaker 5: ring a doorbell once in a while?
- 19:26Speaker 4: There we are. The first one. All right. Let me
- 19:36Speaker 4: have the flashlight.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Oh, the flashlight.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Yes, yes, the flashlight. Hurry.
- 19:40Speaker 5: I left it in the car.
- 19:42Speaker 4: You did? Well, that's fine.
- 19:45Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry, Lamont. I can go back.
- 19:46Speaker 4: No, no, no. Never mind. We'll use matches. Stay right
- 19:48Speaker 4: behind me.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Right behind you.
- 19:52Speaker 4: There.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Look, Lamont, there's a flight of stairs in the corner.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Good. That's what I was looking for. You see, I've
- 19:59Speaker 4: heard that Flynn has maintained a hideaway here for years,
- 20:01Speaker 4: upstairs on top of the warehouse.
- 20:03Speaker 5: Well, he's up there now.
- 20:04Speaker 4: There's only one way to find out. Now, you wait here.
- 20:07Speaker 5: Wait here?
- 20:08Speaker 4: Yes, it'll be much safer. If I'm not back downstairs
- 20:11Speaker 4: in 15 minutes, I want you to get in the
- 20:13Speaker 4: car and go to the police headquarters. You can tell
- 20:16Speaker 4: Commissioner Weston our whole story.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Oh, Lamont, don't you think you ought to send for
- 20:19Speaker 5: Weston now?
- 20:19Speaker 4: I should say not. Well, see you in a few minutes, honey. Yes, sir.
- 20:24Speaker 5: See you in a few minutes.
- 20:25Speaker 4: And don't worry. Everything will be all right.
- 20:29Speaker 5: Everything will be all right.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Oh, shucks.
- 20:35Speaker 5: I never could whistle. Oh, dear.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Something wrong, lady?
- 20:42Speaker 5: Who's that?
- 20:42Speaker 4: Now, now, don't get alarmed.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Take that flashlight out of my eyes. I can't see you.
- 20:46Speaker 4: That's the idea.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Who are you? Oh, sorry.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Flynn.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Grant Flynn?
- 20:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 20:56Speaker 6: The man that your friend has gone upstairs to find.
- 20:59Speaker 6: Won't he be surprised when he comes back and finds
- 21:01Speaker 6: you gone?
- 21:02Speaker 4: Gone?
- 21:02Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 21:03Speaker 4: You see, you're coming with me.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Oh, let go of me.
- 21:07Speaker 4: You see that tunnel where you came in here?
- 21:08Speaker 5: Well, what's that got to do with.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Well, it's sealed up at both ends. And the rest
- 21:12Speaker 4: of it's buried in the river. No, you can't.
- 21:15Speaker 5: You can't.
- 21:15Speaker 4: I'll have to muffle you, sister. Wait till you get
- 21:18Speaker 4: down in the tunnel and you can scream all you want, then.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Come on, now.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Now.
- 21:24Speaker 4: You go right through this panel on the wall.
- 21:26Speaker 7: I can't.
- 21:26Speaker 6: Stop biting me. It's too late now, sister. You haven't
- 21:38Speaker 6: told me how you liked it down here in the
- 21:40Speaker 6: tunnel yet, lady.
- 21:42Speaker 4: It's awful. Oh, now you'll get used to it.
- 21:45Speaker 6: After you're here a while, the water dripping from the
- 21:47Speaker 6: walls and the cats running around. Why, you won't want
- 21:51Speaker 6: anything else.
- 21:51Speaker 5: You can't keep me down here.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 21:54Speaker 6: This will be a lesson to you and your inquisitor
- 21:56Speaker 6: friend to keep out of other people's business.
- 21:59Speaker 4: Well, I hate to be leaving you, but... I don't
- 22:01Speaker 4: think you are leaving, Mr. Flynn. Who was that? I
- 22:04Speaker 4: believe we've talked before. I... And the shadow.
- 22:08Speaker 3: The shadow.
- 22:09Speaker 4: How did you get here? I followed you down here
- 22:10Speaker 4: and I've come for you, Flynn. Oh, yes? Yes. I
- 22:14Speaker 4: believe that Police Commissioner Weston will be very interested in
- 22:16Speaker 4: the phenomena of a dead man. Listen. Come to life. Listen,
- 22:20Speaker 4: even if I can't see you, you aren't scaring me.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Scaring seems to be your specialty, Flynn. No one's turning
- 22:24Speaker 4: me in. I'm dead, see? Legally dead. Come on, Flynn. Oh, no,
- 22:27Speaker 4: you don't. This is the one case the shadow failed on.
- 22:32Speaker 5: We've thrown the flashlight away. Can you see anything?
- 22:34Speaker 2: No.
- 22:35Speaker 4: It sounds like he's running down the tunnel toward the river.
- 22:37Speaker 4: We must follow him quickly. Just ahead there, Margo. A
- 22:41Speaker 4: shaft of light. Come on. Careful, Margo. For all the
- 22:46Speaker 4: tunnel here is covered with slime.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Oh, Lamont, this is.
- 22:50Speaker 4: I thought you'd be fools enough to follow me here.
- 22:52Speaker 4: We have you trapped this time, Flynn. Oh, yes. That's
- 22:55Speaker 4: what you think. Do you see this lever right by
- 22:57Speaker 4: my hand? That's a valve, see?
- 22:59Speaker 6: A valve that'll let water roll into this tunnel at
- 23:01Speaker 6: hundreds of tons a minute. Now, you may be just
- 23:04Speaker 6: a voice, Shadow, but you can die like the rest
- 23:07Speaker 6: of us. And that goes for your girlfriend, too.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Well, don't you think you're being stupid, Mr. Flynn? Remember,
- 23:11Speaker 5: you're trapped, too.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Oh, yes, I'm dead. I'm dead already. You can't hurt me.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Don't touch that bell, Flynn. Who was that?
- 23:21Speaker 5: Look, right at Flynn's feet, crawling along the ground.
- 23:24Speaker 4: It's a man.
- 23:26Speaker 7: Three weeks ago, I was a man, lady. Three weeks ago,
- 23:31Speaker 7: I was brought into this hole and left to die.
- 23:35Speaker 7: Three weeks ago, I was John Gordon.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Gordon? The missing John Gordon?
- 23:41Speaker 6: But you can't be Gordon. You're dead. I ordered you
- 23:43Speaker 6: killed and your body thrown down here. You're no trigger man.
- 23:46Speaker 6: It's a bum shot, Flynn, but I'm not. You want
- 23:48Speaker 6: a practical demonstration?
- 23:49Speaker 4: Now wait, Gordon. Put down that gun or I'll pull
- 23:51Speaker 4: this valve. You haven't got guts enough. Keep away from me.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Put that gun away. I'm the one that'll do something, lady.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Come and get it, Flynn. Now, my friends, I think that.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Oh, Lamont!
- 24:07Speaker 7: Lamont!
- 24:07Speaker 4: Steady, Margo. Let us see what.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Why, they're both dead.
- 24:15Speaker 5: Gordon, too?
- 24:16Speaker 4: Yes. He should have died days ago down here. The
- 24:20Speaker 4: only thing that kept him alive was the hope of
- 24:22Speaker 4: getting Flynn. Oh, how horrible.
- 24:27Speaker 5: I suppose the next thing to do is to notify
- 24:29Speaker 5: Commissioner Weston.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Yes, he... Margo, look. What? Water. Water coming in through
- 24:35Speaker 4: that valve. Oh, Lamont. Flynn must have turned it on.
- 24:37Speaker 4: Come on, Margo. Quickly. Quickly.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Here.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Here's a passageway.
- 24:44Speaker 8: Don't worry.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Let's get up these stairs.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Here.
- 24:47Speaker 4: The door.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Oh, good.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Oh. That was a close call. Oh.
- 24:55Speaker 5: Well, what do we do now?
- 24:57Speaker 4: Well, we'll notify the city department that the tunnel is flooded...
- 25:02Speaker 4: But as for telling Commissioner Weston about Flynn and Gordon, well,
- 25:06Speaker 4: perhaps it's just as well that he never knows. Are
- 25:10Speaker 4: you tired?
- 25:11Speaker 5: Well, it has been a busy day.
- 25:13Speaker 4: You like to go home?
- 25:15Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 25:17Speaker 5: But stop off at the bookstore first, will you?
- 25:20Speaker 4: The bookstore?
- 25:21Speaker 5: Yes, darling. I want to rest my nerves by curling
- 25:25Speaker 5: up in bed with a very gory mystery story.
